'Unforeseen' snag keeps High Street shut to traffic KEYNSHAM High Street will stay closed to traffic for longer than expected because of a problem affecting improvement works. The project, which began on June 1, has so far involved paving the west side of the street in new materials, along with re-arranging the Charlton Road junction and installing new street lighting. But Bath & North East Somerset Council has announced: “An unforeseen issue with the depth available in the pavement on the east side of the street to install drainage as planned now means that the drainage has to be placed in the carriageway. “This means that the High Street will remain closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while the work is completed.” The council says it is working with traders to minimise disruption and ensure access during trading hours. Photos: Dix Noonan Webb The medals won by Major 'Freddy' Small, born in Keynsham MEDALS won by a First World War aviator from Keynsham have been sold at auction for £5,500. The collection was bought at Dix Noonan Webb auction house in London by a collector with an interest in military history. Major ‘Freddy’ Small was the first member of the Royal Flying Corps to shoot down an enemy aircraft with a machine gun. Born in Keynsham on March 7, 1890, Francis Gordon Small was appointed Flying Officer in the Royal Flying Corps, Military Wing, in April 1913 - less than a year after its formation - and was posted to No. 5 Squadron. In August 1914, following the outbreak of the Great War, Small delivered a message to the HQ of Douglas Haig - British commander on the Western Front for most of the war - by audaciously landing between the lines of I Corps and the pursuing Germans. In November of that year, he fired a machine-gun at a German plane, forcing it to land behind

enemy lines, and, with the aid of his fellow lieutenant, captured the two German crew members. Lieutenant Small succeeded in bringing down the plane despite being shot in the hand by the German observer, who had returned fire with a pistol. He was wounded a second time later that year. Rendered unfit to fly, he was appointed Commander of No. 47 Squadron (Home Defence) and then became an instructor, before being confirmed in the rank of major in 1919. He relinquished his commission in 1923 and died in 1970. The medals sold at auction had been expected to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000. They consisted of a 1914 Star, British War and Victory Medals, together with a bullet - the tip of which has been bent on impact - inscribed ‘December 6th 1914’ the date he received the wounds that ended his career of active service.

'Unforeseen' setback for High Street From Page 1 access their premises. Works on the drainage was due to begin in early September, alongside the installation of new street furniture, the relocation of the bus stop and delivery of new paving. It is anticipated that the road will reopen later in the autumn. B&NES says these unexpected works mean that sewer works for the housing development in Rock Road have also been delayed. But it says that Rock Road and Ashton Way will not be closed at the same time as the High Street. The council says it is working with the Rock Road development’s contractors to find an opportunity for the sewer works to be done at a time that minimises the impact on people accessing Keynsham and does not delay the High Street programme. “By taking advantage of the extended road closure, foreseeing no further delays, the High Street scheme is now expected to be completed in the week beginning November 29 ahead of the Christmas trading period.” Councillor Richard Samuel, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic development & resources, said much progress had been made over the past three months. “However, it is often the nature of major construction works that there will be unforeseen issues causing delays and impacting other local projects. “Nevertheless, we do appreciate the frustration and inconvenience this causes for

The improvement scheme in Keynsham High Street is expect to finish around the end of November residents and businesses. We are working closely with our contractors and the contractors for the Rock Road development to minimise disruption in any way we can. “Please be reassured that Ashton Way and Rock Road will not be closed while the High Street is closed. “We will provide a further update on this as soon as we possibly can.” The High Street scheme will provide footpath widening and resurfacing, better signage and cycling and bus stop facilities on the High Street between Bath Hill and Charlton Road. There will also be new street furniture, streetlights, landscaping and trees. Tarmac ramps to provide access for wheelchairs, pushchairs, motorised wheelchairs, bicycles and

pedestrians have been installed where possible. Where tarmac ramps are not possible, industrystandard plastic ramps have been installed. The council is continuing to review the ramps as the work progresses.

n CHURCHES TOGETHER - ECO COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

Our planet - we're running out of time!

S

ometime before the pandemic struck our world, the then Chair of Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford, Clarice Corfield, expressed her concerns about the future of our planet. She spoke of the kind of world her children and grandchildren were growing up in, of her concerns for those people who are losing their homes and land due to rising ocean levels and their inability to grow crops to feed their families, all of it resulting from climate change. Contact was made with other people locally both inside and outside of Churches, a committee was formed and the idea of holding an Eco Community Festival was born. It will be held on Friday and Saturday September 17 and 18, and on the Friday evening there will be a meeting in The Space in Keynsham, where four experts will give their views on how, individually and collectively, we can help to tackle climate change. Food, energy, money and the

services provided by the natural world are the cornerstones of a fully functioning society. We all eat, heat our homes and use our income to spend money and interact with nature. This gives us huge power to affect the outcome of the climate crisis through our individual choices, by influencing business and exercising our

democratic rights to ensure that our Government supports us to make the right choices. Our speakers will be: on food, Jo Lewis, Head of Food and Farming at the Soil Association; on nature, Ian Barrett, CEO of the Avon Wildlife Trust; on money, Richard O’Brien, a fund manager at Triodos Bank; and on energy, Peter Carpener, CEO of Bath and West Community Energy. After the speakers’ presentations, there will be a panel debate with questions from the audience. The evening will be chaired by the Rev Mike Burke. Tickets priced at £5 can be booked online at https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/ Saturday’s events will focus on Market Walk in the centre of Keynsham, where there will be stallholders representing local traders, community groups, charities and campaigning groups, plus schools and young people. Examples include Community Fridge, Eco Church, Saltford and Keynsham Fairtrade Groups, Serenity Gardens, Christian Climate

Alliance, Extinction Rebellion and Plastic Reaction. There will be some exciting local businesses working in the green, environmental and sustainable space in food, transport and services, such as Conscience Foods and Aroma Foods. Children are very much part of the Saturday event and there will be activities for them at the community plot beside the café in Keynsham Memorial Park, which will include art and craft making, a display of pledges for the planet, rock decorating and planting a micro crop in a decorated recycled container. In Market Walk there will be a carbon footprint quiz for all the family plus a bug hunt and making bug hotels at St Francis Church in Warwick Road. At Victoria Methodist Church in the High Street, where drinks will be provided, there will be an eco exhibition by the Girls’ Brigade and prayer tables providing an opportunity for quiet reflection and meditation. The Baptist Church will host an exhibition of photographs

CHURCHES TOGETHER - ECO COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Bill Bailey, comedian and environmentalist Like so many of you I was shocked by the recent IPCC report, which put, in no uncertain terms, that global heating due to our own actions is reaching critical levels. We have all known about this for a long while, but to hear the warnings so starkly made is a big wake-up call for us all. So this initiative by Churches Together and Keynsham Council could not be more timely and essential, and I loudly applaud all their efforts. This Eco Community Festival is and artwork inspired by nature. The event, arranged by Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford in partnership with Keynsham Town Council, will be held against the backcloth of recent worldwide disasters, such as the floods in Germany, Belgium and Holland, uncontrollable fires in Greece, Turkey and California,

a wonderful way to bring people together to celebrate all things local while highlighting all that we can do for our planet. I would like to wish everyone involved in this excellent project all the very best. Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Movement I wish you every success with the town’s first Eco Festival. The need for urgent, deep and profoundly imaginative action is now absolutely unavoidable. And given that reality, we can either choose to embrace the possibilities that these times present, the exhilarating possibilities that open before us when we realise that there are no non-radical solutions left, or we can cling to how-things-are, imagining them to be somewhat irreplaceable.

and homes under water in poverty stricken countries such as Bangladesh. These events were followed by the latest report from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which called for a drastic culling of carbon emissions in the next 20 years. The UN Secretary General,

If we are to succeed, these next 10 years have to feel like an unprecedented and utterly remarkable revolution of the imagination, a time when anything feels possible. How would it be to live through such a time, such an exhilarating shift? We don’t know yet, but visit the Eco Fair, and you will at least get a taste of it. Be inspired, and then bring it alive. Dale Vince, owner of green energy company Ecotricity and chairman of Forest Green Football Club This is the kind of event we need more of, where we bring people together to look at the environmental issues we face, talk about what we can do and above all else – have fun. It’s the key to more sustainable living.

Antonio Guterres, in describing the report as “code red for humanity”, went on to say: “The alarm bells are deafening and the evidence is irrefutable. Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people in immediate danger. Global heating is affecting every

region on Earth, with many of the changes becoming irreversible”. The festival is for all ages, and while it will be a fun day, its aim is to make us all aware of the seriousness of the problem facing our planet brought about by climate change, something we can all commit ourselves to combatting.

Concern as mooring ban deferred

FOLLOWING a judicial review challenge by Community Law Partnership (CLP) on behalf of a liveaboard boater concerning the way the B&NES Cabinet resolved on 8 October 2020 to close the 14-day moorings during winter months, a decision has been made by the cabinet member for neighbourhood services, Cllr David Wood, in consultation with the director of environment, to defer the decision to close the winter moorings. It is not yet known when B&NES Council will review moorings in Mead Lane, but it has an ambition to end moorings in Mead Lane by the end of 2022. This decision to end the winter mooring ban will be of concern to those boaters who have visited Mead Lane in the winter months and Saltford residents who are well aware of the dangers of winter flooding in Mead Lane (see photographs from January and February 2020) and the high river flow rates at times, usually in autumn and winter, when the river is in spate after prolonged rainfall. The flow rates have previously caused considerable erosion in Mead Lane; hence the riverbank repairs and bio-engineered stabilisation works by B&NES Council in 2005, which it then overlooked when the council encouraged moorings in Mead Lane for a mooring trial during 2017 and 2018. The trial came about after moorings started to occur in Mead Lane from 2015, when boats first started to moor there due to a loss of moorings in Bath and other factors. Furthermore, the Canal and River Trust (CRT) has continued to issue more continuous cruising licences despite the lack of facilities on the Kennet & Avon Canal and River Avon. Climate change is already widely acknowledged to be increasing the frequency of severe and prolonged rainstorms. You only need to see the news reports of the present devastating floods in Western Europe to recognise this - and those are summer rainstorms. This decision to defer the winter mooring ban therefore raises questions over B&NES Council's commitment to its own declaration of a climate

Such sad news I AM stunned and saddened to read about the passing of Karen MacLeod (‘Former Olympic runner Karen dies’ – August issue). I was only talking about her recently whilst watching the Olympics. Karen and I used to work together at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, for the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS as it was known then) in the early 1990s. Karen was a hard-working employee who fitted her training around her part-time work. We tested water and food samples for the local Environmental Health Departments. Karen was a delightful person to have around. Quiet, gentle, friendly and fully determined to achieve her running aspirations. She was a delight to work with. Helen Cini (Helen Day at the time)

emergency. Adapting to climate change so that communities, including the liveaboard community, are more resilient and less vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events surely has to be an urgent priority. Safe moorings in appropriate locations that are safe all year round needs to be part of how local councils with riparian ownership on navigable river respond to climate change impacts. Saltford Environment Group

Privilege to run with Karen THANK you for reporting the sad and early passing of Karen MacLeod. Karen was a slightly built girl but also a steely, fearless competitor, enormously talented but still self-effacing and modest. I felt privileged to train with Karen and run in a few of the same races as her, It taught me a lot about my own limitations. I Iast saw Karen on her native Isle of Skye in 2017. She cheerfully admitted the only running she now did was with the dog on the beach. Returning to her roots was right for her. She loved visiting her old primary school in Kyleakin to inspire the children. Karen had lots of musical friends, including her brother-inlaw, who was in top Scottish band Runrig. Several months before

she passed, she put together an excellent CD of bands from the Western Isles. True to form she insisted on no mention of her running achievements being on it. For her it was about gratitude for being able to return to the dance floor (which she loved) after her operation and benefiting kidney charities. Everything about it is a firstclass production. It was never meant to be an epitaph but turned into a mighty fine one. Again true to form, when she passed, a lot of her wild-swimming friends did not know she had been an international athlete “in a previous life”, as she described it. Lionel Hutt, Keynsham (Editor’s note: For more information about the CD mentioned above, search online for ‘Skye Olympian launches charity album’)

Riverbank for everyone, not just boaters THE article “boaters set to return to winter moorings” in the August edition of Keynsham Voice gave a narrow perspective on the issues around the Mead Lane riverbank, which is owned by Bath and North East Somerset Council. There are many and varied interests deeply concerned - not just those of the live-aboard boating community - about the future of the riverbank. It is a riverbank where people can fish, including the many who may not have the means or do not want to join an angling club. It is the home of the Bristol Avon Sailing Club, and it is always a delight to see the club’s youngsters out on the river. The riverbank is a spot for picnickers, paddle-boarders and for artists. A section which used to be allocated for 48-hour moorings has now become an open space for uninterrupted views and for nature to bounce back and thrive. The flat nature of the adjacent road makes this an ideal place for anyone with mobility issues to enjoy the outdoors. Local schools would once more use the riverbank as an outdoor classroom if it was only considered safe to do so. A spokesperson for a section of the boating community expressed the situation in Mead Lane as “little people” versus “rich residents”. This is a narrative which belies the real situation. Mead Lane is an asset for all to enjoy. One vested interest should not dominate. Councillor Duncan Hounsell B&NES councillor (Saltford ward)

My heroic helpers PLEASE be so kind as to publish my thanks for all the offers of help I received after a collapse in Ashton Way car park mid-June from so many caring passers-by. I am now fully recovered but aware of how lucky I was to receive immediate care from Dr Faye, Mindy, off-duty paramedic Liam and also an awesome duo, Emma Mcgauley and partner Jeremy. My memory of events is sparse but for my son who was with me they were phenomenal and that means the world to me as well. Deborah, Victoria and Sebastian Bailey

Food bank set to reopen at St Francis THE Keynsham Foodbank team are delighted to restart their ‘collect-from-our-door’ option and welcome clients back to St Francis Church. The church in Warwick Road, Keynsham, will be open for collections on Thursdays mornings, 10am to midday, from September 9. This supplements the collection option at St Mary’s in Saltford on a Friday morning (10.15am to 11.45am), which restarted in July, and the food bank’s ongoing delivery options. “The pandemic led to quite a few changes in the way in which we operate,” said long-time trustee June Brassington. “One of the key parts of the food bank service which stopped was collection. “More importantly, this also meant that we lost the opportunity to have a friendly chat with those we support, and the chance to signpost to other organisations for help. “Whilst we are not yet able to

St Francis in Warwick Road

offer cups of tea as we did in the past, we hope that by reopening for collection-at-our-door, our volunteers will be able to provide more support.” Local people in food crisis receive support from the food bank via e-vouchers issued by an extensive list of local agencies. Keynsham Foodbank works with over 100 referral agencies, including BANES Welfare, Citizens Advice Bureau, the Community Wellbeing Hub, local schools, churches and charities. The Trussell Trust e-voucher system ensures that the food bank receives information

securely and can swiftly help people in need of food. Lucy Duffy, Trussell Trust area manager said, “The Keynsham team have been working hard throughout the pandemic, and like food banks nationally, experienced a significant growth in demand and generous community support. “As autumn approaches and furlough comes to an end, the Trussell Trust is particularly concerned about the impact the cancellation of the £20 Universal Credit uplift will have in October. “For some families, this will

mean suddenly losing up to a fifth of their income, and the concern is this cut will mean even more people in the UK will need a food bank later this year.” June added: “We’re getting our volunteer teams and systems as ready as we can be for what we think will be a difficult autumn.” In order to reopen on a Monday morning at Victoria Key Centre in Keynsham, the food bank is looking for one or two people to lead a volunteer team, with strong interpersonal skills and basic IT skills. All necessary training will be provided. Keynsham Foodbank’s collect-at-our-door service at St Francis and St Mary’s is available by arrangement. The option of delivery continues until at least the end of September: currently on a Wednesday and Friday, and then, from September 9 onwards, on a Thursday and Friday. n EDUCATION AUGUST 10th, 2021, was an uplifting results day for boomsatsuma College students, with all achieving a qualification, and an impressive 54% awarded a Distinction, or higher, opening up fantastic possibilities for them in Bristol’s creative sector. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma co-founder, said: “These students have come through challenging Covid-19 pandemic journeys over the past two years, so this is an important boost for them all. They all have these great platforms, that will help them move on to the next stages of their lives, be-it staying in education or into employment. What’s enormous, is that they leave with so much more than qualifications, in terms of work-place experiences, selfconfidence and wider life-skills. “We are now gearing up to return in September with next years’ students with most courses full, there are just a few spaces available for this year and we’ll be opening for 2023 enrolment to find the next generation of Bristol’s creative voices.”

Students pass with Distinction at boomsatsuma

The 2021 results show consistent performance across boomsatsuma’s creative media and acting courses, extending back over the past three years. There was no change in the

way that the Level 3 National Diploma grades come via an assessment process, rather than exams, though Covid did mean boomsatsuma managed new teaching and student support

processes, to sustain quality education and mentoring. The result was to achieve these excellent outcomes for the next generation of creative professionals.

GCSE RESULTS

We did it! Hard work earns reward

STUDENTS in Keynsham have been celebrating some excellent GCSE results. Futura Learning Partnership – which includes Wellsway School and IKB Academy - is delighted that the hard work of students and the support provided by staff and families has been rewarded. All schools reported successes, including highfliers with strings of A* grades, students who had made strong progress and exceeded their personal targets, and others who had triumphed despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wellsway School students celebrate their GCSE results:

Wellsway School The school was delighted to welcome students and their families to collect GCSE results. The grades we have awarded reflect their talents and abilities, as well as the tremendous effort they have made over the duration of their time with us. “In a year in which much will be said about the manner in which grades have been determined for young people across the nation, we can be absolutely clear that the high standard of marking and standardisation demonstrated by our teachers has ensured that students have received the grades they have earned and deserve.” Exceptional individual performances include: l Sophie Lowe – achieving eight grade 9s and two 8s l Amelia Draper – eight grade 9s, one 8 and one 7 l Keziah Ross – seven grade 9s, one 8 and two 7s l Sam Eve, Amy Nicholls and Joel Marlor – six grade 9s, three 8s and one 7 l Evelyn Shipp – six grade 9s, two 8s and two 7s

Academy trust is building for the future

AN ACADEMY trust in the West of England is starting the new school year with a new name. Futura Learning Partnership is the name chosen by the former Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which runs 13 schools in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The trust decided the change was needed to better reflect its schools and the 6,000 children and young people and 800 staff within them. Chief Executive Andrea Arlidge explains: “When we began in 2014, we chose to name the trust after the founder school, Wellsway. Our growth over seven years has brought us to a point where we feel the need for an identity that shows we are truly one organisation in which every school is an equal. “The name chosen – after consulting widely with students, staff and governors – is forwardlooking, while acknowledging our history: Futura comes from the Wellsway School motto Futura Aedificamus, which means ‘We

Collaboration is key to our success - Futura Learning Partnership build for the future’. Learning is our fundamental purpose, while partnership underpins everything we do. “Collaboration has been the key to our success so far; it is one of our core values, along with aspiration, opportunity and respect. We are committed to continuing to develop common practices and approaches in

pursuit of educational excellence. “We are an inclusive trust, providing seamless education for children from the moment they step through the doors of any of our family of schools until they leave us as young adults. “This is a hugely exciting time for us: building work is under way on a new primary school to serve the growing

population in East Keynsham, we are expanding our special school provision based at Aspire Academy in Bath and we have launched our Trust-wide post-16 provision, Futura Sixth. “We look forward to continuing to work together to support all the schools in our trust and every individual within them. With a strong track record in delivering educational excellence, we are also keen to main and develop our role supporting school improvement across our region. “There are clear advantages to schools joining the Futura family. We are actively looking at recruiting more schools in the West of England and possibly further afield if they fit with our vision and can help us develop our educational offer.” Futura Learning Partnership launched on September 1 and has produced a short promotional film at https://youtu.be/ x32HYoM1zOg. Futura Sixth offers the best of both worlds POST-16 provision in the West of England is stronger from this month, thanks to the launch of Futura Sixth. This is an inclusive, collaborative sixth form for the schools in Futura Learning Partnership (formerly Wellsway Multi Academy Trust): Wellsway School, Bedminster Down School, IKB Academy and Sir Bernard Lovell Academy. The trust includes more than 5,500 children and young people from nursery age to adulthood in 13 schools. Futura Sixth is a fully aligned and inclusive post-16 that can meet the needs of all students and prepare them for adult life. Danny Wilkinson, the Trust’s Director of Post 16, said: “Futura Sixth will offer students the best of both worlds. “They can choose a home school for their studies but have access to courses on three sites FLP1013 Futura Sixth Half - Wellsway, IKB and SBL - with

free transport provided. Aligning our provision and collaborating in this way means we can run a broader range of A-levels and vocational subjects, allowing students access to the very best teaching across our Trust. “Our young people can retain a pride in their home school and receive support and pastoral care from staff who know them well while at the same time benefiting from wider academic and enrichment opportunities and experiences.” Futura Sixth offers pathways that meet the needs of1 every Page Advert AW.pdf 11/08/2021 individual student, from the

need to improve their Level 2 qualifications. The sharing of the wealth of expertise in the Trust means we are able to ensure equity for all, including vulnerable students, who are supported to apply for bursaries to help them fund travel to school, books and resources. Mr Wilkinson said: “We are confident that our approach will help all our students to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge they need to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential. “It is already proving popular – applications for sixth form places in the Trust have risen considerably this year – and we expect numbers to go up even more as students realise the many advantages of being part of Futura Sixth.” It’s not too late to join for 2021-22 – call in to any of our schools to find out more.

Wellsway welcomes new principal

Rob Pearsall meets Wellsway students

ROB Pearsall is the new Principal and Executive Head of Wellsway School and IKB Academy. The Voice gave him a chance to introduce himself to the people of Keynsham. Hello Rob, and welcome to Keynsham. Tell us what attracted you to this role. I had the opportunity to lead Plymstock School in Plymouth, where I’d worked since 2009, for two years while the head was on a secondment. I was looking for my own headship and wanted a school and trust that chimed with my values and moral purpose. I found that at Wellsway and was delighted to be appointed. What in particular stood out for you about Wellsway? The Wellsway trust, now renamed Futura Learning Partnership, has the highest expectations of its students and staff within a culture of kindness. Wellsway School is a very special place - a caring environment with a team of staff who have the highest aspirations for the young people in their care. My priority is to ensure that in every classroom our students experience consistent and highly effective teaching and learning, and that their effort is celebrated. How are you getting to know the school? I managed a couple of brief visits since I was appointed at the end of April. I have been struck by the students' politeness and courtesy. I was delighted to attend one of the induction days for those starting in Year 7 this month to welcome them. I was so impressed by their energy and enthusiasm. What will be your first actions this year? I will work with the Vice Principals at Wellsway, David Cooper and Sophie Francis, and the Head of School at IKB, Debbie Gibbs, to ensure we continue to provide the very best educational

experiences at the heart of the community. There will no major changes to the way we do things, although we always seek to further improve. We have a focus on excellence for both our culture and curriculum, so that it allows all young people to succeed both now and in the future. I am very much looking forward to getting to know the staff team, the students and their families over the coming year so we can work together to help young people become the best they can be. What do you think has been the impact of the Covid-19 emergency on education? It has been an extraordinary time. It started soon after I had become head at Plymstock and there was so much for everyone to cope with. I learned a lot about myself and the people I worked with. The young people have been incredible, especially those in the exam years. They have shown such resilience and perseverance and deserve every success. They have bounced back so well.

Tell us a bit more about your career to date I’ve been a teacher for 26 years. I started out teaching business studies, ICT and economics, but soon realised that my passion was for the pastoral side of my work. I have led on behaviour, safety and welfare for students, been a special educational needs co-ordinator and worked on reducing the gap between disadvantaged students and their peers. I believe schools must be inclusive, but with an understanding that children need clear boundaries and must be supported to have high expectations so they can become the best versions of themselves. What about beyond work? Outside school, I enjoy being outdoors, whether that’s walking, running or gardening. I am glad to see that Wellsway has such a strong culture of extra-curricular activities for students. My wife, who is also a teacher, and I are relocating from Devon. We lived in Bath before we trained as teachers. We have two sons, aged 23 and 21.

Exciting prospects

BROADLANDS Academy student Ethan from Keynsham was blown away by his GCSE grades, which exceeded expectations after a difficult year. Ethan - pictured here with his mum - said that the last year had "not been great" after losing his uncle to coronavirus and learning online - all while he cared for a disabled family member. "My grandad discovered

he had a tumour and my uncle passed away sadly due to Covid. And I'm a young carer, so juggling all of that and school was a difficult thing. So I am glad I have got the results that I have." Ethan achieved a grade 9 in English Language, grade 8 in English Literature, and four grade 7s. He will now do a two-year diploma in Game Design at boomsatsuma college in Bristol.

STUDENTS from Broadlands Academy are celebrating their GCSE results after months away from school because of lockdowns and Covid restrictions. The following students did particularly well and will go on to pursue exciting post-16 paths: l Eesha Arora gained 9s in all three sciences, plus a further two 9s and four 8s. She plans to study A-levels in Maths, Chemistry and Business at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College. l Libby Dickens gained 9s in both English Language and Literature, plus a further 9, two BTEC Distinctions, three 8s and one 7. She is heading for Bath College to study Sport and Exercise Science. l James Giles gained a Distinction in BTEC Performing Arts, seven 8s, and one 7, and is bound for St Brendan's, where he will study English, Drama and Computing. l Martyna Ostaszewska sat two languages and achieved three 9s,

They have worked so hard, both this year and last year, despite all of the challenges and disruption that Covid brought. “They deserve these grades and I am incredibly proud of what each and every one of them has achieved. Whether they are going onto study A-levels, vocational qualifications, or going into employment or training, they have a bright future ahead.” David Hatchett, National Director of Secondary Schools at AET said: “Today’s GCSE results are testament to the hard work of students over what has been a very disruptive two years. I congratulate each and every one of them, and pay tribute to our teachers, who have made today’s results possible in these challenging circumstances.”

ath and North East Somerset Council recently announced that proposals to help reduce car use and the impacts of car travel in the district will go out to public consultation alongside the Local Plan Partial Update. The council has “declared climate and ecological emergencies with a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030” and since transport accounts for 29% of B&NES’ carbon emissions, the council will seek to reduce vehicle mileage by 25% per person, shift to 76% ULEV and 14% hybrid vehicles and permit just 10% of vehicles to be powered by petrol and diesel. The draft Transport and Development Supplementary Planning Document, which if approved claims to help the environment via future changes to transport policies set out in the Local Plan Partial update, would be used by the council to assess development plans, proposals and requirements (where planning permission is sought). These initiatives, led by the Liberal Democrat cabinet, seem at last in part to be missing the point and contribute to the negative approach to green policies that seek to stop people doing things. As vehicles become cleaner there is no need to reduce car journeys. Cars, vans and lorries powered by electricity writes for made from renewable sources or hydrogen are not polluting and it is sheer bossiness to stop people driving. The independence and convenience of driving is something politicians should welcome, with the focus on emissions, not mileage. Green policies will be successful if they lead to higher living standards and economic prosperity. New technologies show that this is possible and preferable to the outdated, “hair shirt” environmentalism of the Adullamites. MenDoSing-KeynshamVoiceAdvert.qxp_Layout 1 06/08/2021 17:31 Page 1

Wild welcome in Hedgehog Street PEOPLE in Keynsham have been doing their bit to create a hedgehog highway. Leaflets were sent to residents in the St Francis Road area in March asking them to create gaps in fences to allow the hogs access from one garden to another, create piles of leaves, put out water and food and possibly hedgehog homes. Since then, hedgehogs have found welcoming gardens in which to feed and rest. One resident said: “Hogs have been visiting my garden for years, and I suspect I am on their regular night route for food, as they appear at a regular time every night and make a return visit in the morning as they go back to bed. “I don’t use chemicals in my garden as I find that not doing so means the birds, insects and hogs keep everything under as much control as I need.”

Another resident saw a hedgehog come into their kitchen to eat from the cat’s food bowl. Several residents have also put up posters – designed by young residents Charlie, Ray and Stanley - asking drivers to be aware of hedgehogs in the road. The project has sparked interest in neighbouring roads from residents who also want to make their gardens hedgehogfriendly. Choirs are coming back AFTER 18 months of lockdown, Bath music man Grenville Jones is “over the moon” to be back conducting his choirs locally, including Keynsham, as well as adding nine new choirs under his Good Afternoon Choir banner from Cornwall to Cheltenham. “It has been tough for all of us across the UK whose choir work completely stopped. Then of course there were the many thousands of amateur choir singers whose hobby came to an abrupt halt. Now ‘good to be back’ takes on a wholly new meaning.” Grenville is recognised as one of the leading choir conductors in the UK. In past months he has been interviewed on national and regional TV and radio about the enforced singing lockdown of choirs while going online with Zoom and YouTube sofa-singing at home sessions with participants from across the world. He is also founder of the Golden-Oldies charity, which before lockdown was running over 200 sessions in community rooms, church halls and libraries across England and Wales. Goldies sessions will also resume soon.

As a choir leader, he has resumed with his Keynsham and Wells Afternoon Choir rehearsals. The Bath Good Afternoon Choir was due to start on September 2 and the celebrated Bath Male Choir, who made the national headlines on the BBC series Last Choir Standing, begins rehearsals on Tuesday September 7. Grenville’s popular 100-voice Welcome Chorus was also due to meet again on September 2, with concerts planned in the build-up to Christmas. Over the past months, Grenville has been busy taking his Goldies charity online with twice weekly www.goldieslive sessions. He has also been adding new choirs, taking the number of Good Afternoon Choirs in the West Country to 19, with 12 experienced leaders, including Matt Finch and John Stanford, who live in Bath. All the groups welcome new singers for what Grenville describes as “the best hobby there is.” Full details of Grenville’s choirs and his charity can be found at www.grenvillejones.biz l Goldies return: Page 35

Code Red: Climate emergency needs leadership

LAST month’s United Nations report couldn’t have been clearer on the climate emergency: it’s Code Red for humanity. Unless world leaders take urgent action, our planet carries on heating up, meaning more devastating floods, more fierce heatwaves, more vicious wildfires. The easiest thing for decision-makers would be doing more of the same when it comes to economic growth and jobs. Some say that’s what created this global crisis. But leadership isn’t about taking easy decisions – quite the opposite. Radical and creative thinking is long overdue. As a teenager growing up in our area, I remember a slogan of the time: “Think globally, act locally.” That couldn’t be more apt. I’m sticking firm to my commitment to oppose Bristol Airport’s proposed expansion. That isn’t about stunting economic growth, as some may paint it, it’s about taking urgent, pragmatic local action to protect our irreplaceable planet. Of course we need more jobs here as we emerge from a brutal pandemic, but in green industries, not airports, investing in projects to help meet our ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. This month I’ll launch a £20 million Green Recovery Fund, in line with the commitment I made to you during the spring’s Metro Mayor

election. You’ll hear more about this soon. In four months since becoming Metro Mayor I’ve given funding to several other environmentally-focused projects. Bristol’s biggest visitor attraction, Brunel’s SS Great Britain, bagged money from the West of England Combined Authority, which I lead, for a heat recovery device to stop its hull rusting. Made by Husk, a Bristol company customising kitchen cabinets, received a grant for LED lighting and solar panels. Pentagon Play, a Bradley Stoke playground equipment firm, got money for energy-saving improvements to its building. Embracing pedal power, I secured £248,000 from the government for electric bicycles which make it easier to get around, leaving cars at home without having to be a lycra-clad fitness fanatic! Look out for details of taster sessions, training courses and loan schemes. That fits well with work just starting on a new cycling and walking trail, made possible by a £1 million grant from the West of England Combined Authority, around the stunning Chew Valley Lake, which is visited by thousands of people across our area, including me and my dog, Angel. Anticipating future challenges and finding solutions has always been key to progress, and there’s great work in that respect going on locally. At S&B Automotive in Bedminster I met

In a few weeks’ time COP26, the UN climate change conference, begins in Glasgow. We’ll be reminded again of what looms unless we take collective action. Just over 10 years ago I was Environment Minister: it was clear there was an emergency back then, but now it’s even more urgent. Code Red is real. It’s humanity’s greatest crisis. Let’s work together here in the West of England to play our part in beating it.

A HAPPY RETIREMENT IS JUST ROUND THE CORNER

Take a walk into the past

A SERIES of local history walks has made a successful return. Last month’s event organised by Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society saw 28 people join Steve Spear for a walk along the Bristol Road. Steve described several long-lost pubs, including the King’s Head, and the rebuilding of the main road by John Macadam in the 1820s. This month’s walks are: September 12: Along the Chew Valley to Chewton Mill, returning via The Scrambles/Stoney Lane and the allotments. Part of this is quite steep, with a rough surface, so proper walking shoes/boots are needed. Distance 2-3 miles. Led by Keith Norton. September 26: Keynsham central area including the High Street, Abbey, Colour Mill and New Inn. Distance 1-2 miles. Led by Richard Dyson. Both walks start at Keynsham Memorial Park café at 2.30pm. All are welcome and it’s free.

AT last some more settled weather is on the horizon and our early autumn gardens are enjoying the sunshine. Although we are a hardy bunch, we KIB volunteers decided to hang up our gardening tools, give the Pocket Park a miss on Saturday August 21, drink coffee and watch the rain from our kitchen windows. All being well, it'll be work on forthcoming Saturdays, and all are welcome to deadhead, weed and enjoy some conversation. If you would like to become a volunteer, please contact keynshaminbloom@icloud.com, catherinemarywoodman@gmail. com or drop a note with your details through the town council letterbox. We will be planting bulbs this autumn, and if anyone has any surplus plants and bulbs, please bring donations at 10am on Saturdays and we will plant them immediately. The Pocket Park has risen from neglect to be a place of quiet contemplation and a fun area for families enjoying a picnic or coffee break. All are welcome and the litter

Civic centre poised for £1.6m revamp COUNCIL offices built seven years ago in a £35 million makeover of Keynsham town centre are set to get a £1.6 million revamp. Despite being among the most energy efficient buildings in the country when it was finished, the award-winning civic centre is currently underused. Bath and North East Somerset Council wants to capitalise on changes brought about by the pandemic that mean more staff are working from home. A decision notice for the seven-figure investment says the civic centre will become the new hub for all the authority’s Bath employees at Lewis House and St Martin’s Hospital, as well as most Guildhall colleagues. On top of the £50,000 saving when it left St Martin’s Hospital last year, the council could secure £425,000 a year in rent from Lewis House and cut its costs by £172,000, while meeting online rather than in person could save it a further £400,000. The cash injection in Keynsham Civic Centre will boost its capacity from 550 to 650, improve the design, provide spaces for private and confidential working, and add new artwork and graphics. The decision notice, signed off by deputy leader Richard Samuel, says: “The capital business plan provides £1,655,000 of

funding to deliver the redesign scheme for interior refurbishment works, including architectural design and fit-out, furnishings, space planning and independent surveys and analysis of the building to determine what occupancy is acceptable within the currently naturally ventilated building.” Giving the rationale for doing the work now, the decision notice says: “The council could retain the current office building estates and associated costs but would not be capitalising on the opportunity that the pandemic has presented us with. “As a result of Covid, the world of work

is set to change on a permanent basis. It is recognised that organisations which proactively respond to the opportunities afforded by the pandemic and reorganise their arrangements are most likely to have a more effective recovery.” The council will look to adapt other work locations at the Guildhall, the fourth floor of Lewis House and The Hollies in Midsomer Norton to give staff a choice of location for bookable meeting spaces. Speeding: a choice that puts others’ lives at risk

H

ELLO to September – and good luck to all of those who are starting or returning to school, college and university. Personally, I still cannot believe that we are almost three quarters of the way through 2021! My team and I continue to gather momentum and I feel well and truly embedded within the role. As I discussed in my last column, the police and crime survey, which closes on September 20, continues to be a focus and I am still calling on local people and communities to tell me what policing issues matter most to them by completing it. The feedback from the survey will help shape my Police and Crime Plan, a legal document that includes various aspects about the policing of the area, how the chief constable will be held to

account and how the PCC will use the money to deliver an effective and efficient service and support other services, such as victim support providers. We’ve had a great response already to the survey, but we want to continue to hear from as many local people, from all walks of life, right up until it closes. The survey is an opportunity for residents and businesses to tell me their views, thoughts and concerns about policing in their villages, towns and cities. As PCC, I am the bridge between local people and the police, and I want as many people as possible to tell me what they want their police service to focus on. The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete and will make a real difference to policing in your communities. You can find it at my website, www.

avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk. Last month, the Avon and Somerset road safety and road policing teams carried out enhanced operations across the area as part of a national speed enforcement campaign. Based on information and footage provided by local people, they targeted repeat offenders and speeding hotspots, including the Stoke Gifford area. They have also been working closely with partners including Community Speedwatch groups and local authorities to find solutions to some specific road safety concerns. Speeding is a choice that puts others’ lives at risk and I want to thank those who comply with speed limits to keep themselves and others safe. I am delighted that the police are listening to local people and working hard to

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Local girl who pursued her political ideals

I

t is easy to forget people who are born locally but move away and achieve success in later life. Lucy Middleton was one of these, a remarkable and principled woman who devoted most of her life to furthering the political ideals Lucy Middleton of pacificism and Photo: Parliamentary Archive socialism that she believed in so passionately. Born on 9th May 1894 as Lucy Annie Cox, she was the second daughter of Sidney Cox and his wife Ada. Sidney was a wire drawer at the Keynsham Brass Mills and the family lived at 16 Albert Road, Keynsham, which at that time was only just being developed. Lucy entered Keynsham Primary School on 4th February 1901. She seemed to excel at all she attempted. In August 1906 she took first place in the under-14 class to create a bouquet at Keynsham Flower Show, and in the 1911 Bristol Sunday School Union scholars’ examination through Keynsham Baptist Church, she took fourth prize with an essay on Elijah. An intelligent girl, she gained a Somerset County Scholarship in 1908 to study at Colston Girls' School in Bristol and there won a twoyear scholarship to become a pupil teacher. Following training at Bristol University, she taught for ten years in various schools. From her father, Lucy had developed a strong interest in radical politics and in 1916 she joined the Independent Labour Party (ILP). After three years she became secretary of the Keynsham branch, attending the annual

This walk will go near Chewton Place, conferences, and moved upwards through the organisation. Deeply affected by the slaughter of the Great War, she became increasingly involved in pacifism and as well as working for the ILP, Lucy joined the No-More-War movement and travelled around the country speaking at rallies on its behalf. By September 1924, Lucy had become the organising secretary of the movement and the next year general secretary, in which capacity she continued into the 1930s. Leaving the pacifist movement to concentrate on party politics, she decided it was time to try to become a Member of Parliament, at a time when female candidates were few and far between (it was only two years since the franchise had been extended to all women). She stood unsuccessfully for Labour in Sevenoaks in 1931, followed by several other contests, before

The focus of her interest remained very much on international affairs but she found time occasionally to raise issues relevant to her Somerset birthplace, as in 1947 when she asked the Minister of Transport “when is it expected that work will be commenced on the proposed new section of the Bristol-Bath road to by-pass the village of Keynsham.” Lucy lost her seat in Plymouth in 1951 and failed to regain it in 1955. Nevertheless, she remained active for the rest of her life, advising the Labour government and running the charity War on Want for 10 years from 1958. PERFECT Fit is celebrating 30 years of providing quality lingerie items and expertise in Keynsham. The business, at 50 Temple Street, was started by Lynn Young back in 1991. In 2007, she took on Debbie French, who very quickly became manager. And in 2016, Debbie took over the business completely. The focus has always been on offering an expert fitting service, quality products and a large choice of lingerie for all sizes and ages. Perfect Fit specialises in many areas - general lingerie, maternity, medical, bridal, swimwear, all-yearround and also the elderly who are now not catered for in department stores. Brides can take in their dresses and have the lingerie fitted exactly to the dress, reassured that all will look fine for that perfect wedding day. Medically, Perfect Fit is recommended by local hospitals for women who have had surgery so that they are fitted correctly and with the right style of lingerie.

Debbie French at Perfect Fit, which is celebrating 30 great years Debbie said: “Over the years, Perfect Fit has gone from strength to strength, due to always looking for ways to help ladies who have sensitive issues, and also priding

ourselves in going the extra mile. “Perfect Fit has a good, dedicated team of staff who are fully trained and very professional at all times.”

She added: “It is important to fit lingerie correctly. We help with the fitting of girls needing their first bra to ladies of any age, the oldest being a lovely lady at the age of 103! “We have been open when legally allowed throughout the pandemic. For our clients, we are still wearing face masks, and we still ask clients to do the same unless exempt. “Hand sanitisers are available in all the fitting rooms, sales counter and at the entrance. We are able to post items if required, but always advise to be fitted first.” Perfect Fit’s end-of-line sale starts on September 4. And to celebrate this month’s 30th anniversary, Debbie is also offering 10% for all her customers from September 6 for one week only. If customers make a purchase during that week, they will be entered into a prize draw for a set of lingerie. Brass mill to open its Drivers needed to help doors for celebration people with dementia SALTFORD Brass Mill will be opening its doors for Heritage Open Days later this month. The nationwide celebration of history, architecture and culture is a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all for free. The brass mill - the only remaining example of the 18th and 19th-century brass industry in the Avon area – will be open on Saturday 11, Sunday 12, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September, 10am-4pm. No booking is required. The mill has a unique annealing furnace (pictured), a working cast-iron water wheel, and displays that include full-size mock-ups of a battery hammer and rolling mill equipment that produced brass pots and pans (“hollow ware”) and brass sheet. Its displays tell the story of brass from smelting to exporting, and about the wire drawing and pin manufacture that lies at the

very beginning of the industrial revolution and led to modern manufacturing before the age of steam. Visitors are advised there are no toilets on site. AN APPEAL has been made for volunteer drivers to help people with dementia in Keynsham and Saltford enjoy a day out. It follows the relocation of the Forget Me Not dementia day service from Saltford to Bath. Sarah Oughton, of Swan Transport, said: “Many of the carers are older drivers, and getting their loved ones to Bath is an extra strain. “Dial a Ride would love to help in Keynsham and were transporting people when the group was in Saltford, but sadly they don’t have the capacity with their vehicles to take people to Bath.” Forget Me Not used to operate from Saltford village hall but moved in June to Bath City Football Club in Twerton. Swan Transport, which is part of the Swan Advice Network charity, helps people who can’t access conventional public transport.

It is looking for car drivers who can spare time at each end of the day on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. The Forget Me Not group runs from 10am to 3pm, so passengers would need picking up at 9.30am and then 3pm, getting back for around 3.30pm. Transport co-ordinator Sarah said: “I have volunteer drivers in Keynsham who are giving a fantastic service but we need more if possible. “By volunteering, this would give their carers a much-needed break, and the passengers would have a day out.” Swan Transport provides volunteer drivers with the support, training and any PPE needed and pays mileage on the current Inland Revenue rates of 45p-60p. Anyone interested can contact Sarah by emailing swan. transport@btconnect.com or phoning 01761 439548.

n BACK TO NATURE

The Elder offers so much to wildlife and to us with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

A

s we move into September, our eyes are drawn to fruiting trees and hedges. Blackberries are already gracing the beaks of many of our native birds as well as our own mouths in pies and crumbles! Another fruiting tree at this time of year, the native Elder, Sambucus Nigra, can be found at the edges of woodland, in hedges, gardens, along canals and often near badger setts or rabbit warrens as the seeds are dispersed by animals and birds. A mature tree can be up to 6 metres high. It grows extremely vigorously; even if it is coppiced back to a stump, new growth will reach up to 4 feet in height in one season. The beautiful frothy aromatic white flowers appear in May to mid-June and are often used to make wine, cordial or tea, or fried in batter to make fritters. The flowers are hermaphrodite, which means they have both male and female reproductive parts within the same flower. The vitamin C-rich berries appear in late August/September and feature in preserve, wine and fruit vinegar recipes and can be baked in a pie with blackberries. Elder is also a great source for

Blue and purple dye was obtained from the berries, yellow and green from the leaves, and grey and black dye was made from the bark. The aroma of the leaves has

long been known to repel flies so was hung on horse’s harnesses, outside barns, bakehouses and kitchens. Historically the wood of the Elder was used for whistles, pipes and children’s pea shooters but, due to the toxicity of the sap, this is no longer regarded as safe. However the mature wood can still be carved or whittled.

Many myths surround the plant, possibly created to warn people to take care as every part of it except the berries and fruit can be mildly poisonous. It is hardly surprising that a plant which has been so useful to humans is also useful to wildlife. Elder leaves provide a nutrient source for moth caterpillars, such as the dot moth, white spotted pug and swallowtail. The flowers provide nectar for many insects. If you ever pick the flowers to bring indoors you will find that many tiny insects invite themselves in too! The flowers and fruit are eaten by small mammals and birds love the fruit - hence the purple blotches on nearby pavements and cars! Julia Shahin

Buried treasures IN August, Mary Wood, an extremely knowledgeable guide from Arnos Vale Cemetery, took members of our group on a 2-hour wildlife walk around the site in Brislington. The cemetery, which was established in 1839, has considerable ecological and heritage importance, and at that time was considered “the place” to be buried in Bristol! We learnt about the magnificent trees on site, walked through woodland and admired the wild flowers and accompanying insects on the chalk grasslands. Most of the grass is nowadays only cut in late summer so the flowers and the insects they support can thrive. Nature conservation is taken seriously, but unfortunately tree felling has to continue due to ash dieback disease, although the wood is recycled on site. Arnos Vale is well worth a visit, a calm and reflective place to wander and take in the wild space that has been allowed to develop. POETRY CORNER

An Uncertain Future with Covid 19 Where do we go from here? The continuing news is uncertain, unclear. Numbers go up, numbers go down We start to relax, then worry and frown. We find it confusing each day when we wake And far ahead plans we’re reluctant to make. Restrictions have eased, but still we’re not sure Should we heed all the signs, or act normal once more? HOWEVER There remains a good reason to ponder and care, Apparent that sometimes a mask we MUST wear Advised to on buses, in shops, that’s made clear And ensure we protect all the ones we hold dear. But a positive thought is never to fall, We must all pull together, for the good of us all. And though hidden from view, there waits the warm sun Ready to bring back our laughter and fun! Keynsham Mencap supporters are entering a team in the 2022 Bath half Marathon to raise vital funds

Supporters set to run and jump SUPPORTERS of Keynsham Mencap are taking on new personal challenges to raise money for the independent charity. They will be joining the 2022 Bath Half Marathon, taking to the skies in a 15,000ft tandem skydive in October and tackling the Brecon Beacons with TrekFest. Fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “Inspired by our very own Club 25 member Nick Look, who cycled the distance from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back during lockdown, we have seen a huge uplift in our supporters taking on challenge. “Sponsored events like these help to raise awareness of our services to a wider audience as our participants obtain sponsors from their friends, families and colleagues.” Keynsham Mencap has had a team in the Bath Half Marathon for the last three years and popularity is growing steadily. The latest exciting challenge that a team of 10 supporters are getting involved with is a 15,000ft tandem skydive. Amanda said: “I even got carried away with the excitement and agreed to take part myself.” If you would like to support this team of daredevils, please visit www.localgiving.org/mencapskydive Supporters are also welcome to join Team KDMS at the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday March 13, 2022. Search online for ‘Keynsham Mencap Bath Half 2022’ for more details. n KEYNSHAM WI

Nice to see you again! KEYNSHAM WI has been pleased to be able to resume its meetings face to face. Our first meeting in July was a talk from Debbie, of Bath Harvest Oils, who gave us a good insight into the production of rapeseed oils. Due to Covid restrictions, we were unable to have any tasters, but this did not stop many of us from buying the products to try at home. Rapeseed oil can be used in many aspects of cooking and comes in a variety of flavours, including garlic, and lemon. The first craft group had some of us making bracelets with beads and charms, thanks to the skills and tuition of Caroline Butcher. We held a summer party with afternoon tea at Saltford Golf Club and raised £150 from our tombola, which was donated to Dorothy House Hospice in memory of our past president, Maureen Gerrish. On August 18, some members became Wombles and did a litter pick in the Waitrose area - it was

surprising how much litter we collected in just an hour. Thanks to Keynsham Wombles for the loan of equipment. We hope to make this a regular event. Our August meeting was due to bring one of our members, Sally Difazio, and her husband, Nigel Wright, to tell the exciting tale of their trip to Everest base camp. We now have a healthy membership of 80 members and a waiting list. Bonny Price

n KEYNSHAM ROTARY

Oxygen chamber offers relief to sufferers

ALONG with a number of other invitees, three members of Keynsham Rotary visited The Brightwell at Bradley Stoke. This charity is not one of the familiar names we hear every day, but its work is invaluable in helping people with neurological conditions affecting the nervous system. Our curiosity was aroused simply because we were not aware of the detail of the treatment on offer and how it worked. The Brightwell has been helping people who live with a neurological condition since 1985, providing therapies and support for those who need to maintain independence and to minimise the effects on their daily life. Such conditions can arise from multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome and conditions

Rotarians Norman James, Nigel Hutchings and Geraldine Kirk experience oxygen therapy that affect the brain and nervous system. Recovery from medical treatments can also be aided. The treatment is based on improving the uptake of oxygen by giving patients sessions in a barochamber for around and hour, breathing 98% oxygen under pressure. This has the effect of increasing

the absorption of oxygen by the body which, for many, alleviates the severity of symptoms of their condition. During the visit, our members were able to experience a session in the barochamber, which they described as akin to swimming under water with a slight increase in pressure on the ear. Having

spoken to regular users of this treatment, they are aware that for some it is an essential facility to make life as near normal as possible. The Brightwell is a charitable organisation and needs public support. More information about its work can be found at www. thebrightwell.org.uk.

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Ashes of London

Young Adult Non Fiction

The Teenage Guide to Stress

Andrew Taylor

William Boyd

Nicola Morgan

This is William Boyd’s 16th novel and with his usual deft style he has written a beautiful story that tries to recreate the changing world of the 1960s. The three main characters are: Elfrida – a once successful novelist but now struggling to find inspiration and drowning her writer’s block in vodka. Can Virginia Woolf be her next project? Talbot – a successful film producer with a secret life in London. Amy – a popular and glamorous American actress who is wondering why the CIA are interested in her. All three characters revolve around the making of a swinging sixties movie set in Brighton, and the book describes the film sets and diva tantrums very well. As the story progresses, the trio’s private lives begin to take over their public ones and the pressure mounts. The question arises of who will break down first. A very enjoyable book and great period detail.

As a lover all things historical crime fiction, I can say this is definitely in the same league as C.J. Sansom or S.J. Parris. This is Andrew Taylor’s first novel that introduces James Marwood and Cat Lovett. The year is 1666 and London is literally ablaze. We meet James as he watches the old St Pauls burn. While he is watching, a young man appears and tries to enter the burning building. James pulls him back and then realises it is in fact a young girl - and this is his first introduction to Cat Lovett. The body of a man is soon found in the debris – stabbed in the neck, thumbs tied behind his back. James, the son of a traitor, is forced to hunt for the murderer. His investigations lead him to Cat Lovett – a determined young woman - and those who surround her home. Another victim is found in Fleet Ditch, and the investigation leads him into the political intrigue of Westminster. This is a great start to the series and very evocative of the time, in particular the smoky remains of 17th century London.

Being a young person at the moment is tough – with Covid affecting schools and colleges, the pressure of social media and your own changing body. Here is a great guide to this tricky time by the author of Blame My Brain. Written in useful sections that cover drugs and alcohol, depression and bullying, the book examines all these problems and gives some brilliant strategies for beating them. This is a very empathetic book, reassuring teenagers they are not alone and they can beat the stress. Children's Fiction

Mapping the way for local explorers

This illustrated map and exploration cards like the one above are aimed at inspiring local discoveries

HAVE you strolled round Keynsham Abbey’s ruins? Do you know what used to be made in the town’s Old Halifax building? This summer, people are being offered the chance to make new discoveries about the town by using new, free High Street exploration cards and an illustrated map. Artists Katy Hawkins and Ellie Shipman created the cards and map with local people and Keynsham groups, working together to capture the features, stories and memories that make the town special. High Street Explorations is part of the Keynsham High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), a partnership between with Historic England, Bath & North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council. The cards have been designed to inspire exploration, reflection and adventure. The

map highlights some of Keynsham’s historic moments and present-day curiosities, and the cards prompt questions about its future. The resources can be used to plot new walking routes, for example, or inspire creative projects or community workshops. Councillor Richard Samuel, B&NES Council’s cabinet member for economic development and resources, said: “It’s not just for people visiting the town for the first time – if you already live in Keynsham, you might be surprised at some new things you could discover.” Deb Cooper, Keynsham town councillor, said: “We hope these cards will be enjoyed by all, and will engage you to think about the High Street in a new and different way. “By understanding and imagining its history, and who walked this area before, we are hoping everyone will be inspired

to help us create our future culture.” Physical copies of the exploration cards and maps can be collected from Temple Street Canteen at 20 Temple Street or, if a school or large community group, by emailing keynshamhshaz@bathnes.gov.uk Digital copies can be downloaded from the HiKeynsham website at www.hikeynsham. co.uk People can add photos, memories and stories to a supersized map in Temple Street Canteen to create a permanent record of High Street Explorations. They can also post their responses and discoveries on the interactive map on the HiKeynsham website. Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society and Keynsham Group, Avon Wildlife Trust, have helped to create the map through the sharing of local stories, curiosities and features.

Sing along at Goldies

It's a team effort in memory of William A FIVE-A-SIDE football tournament has been held in memory of keen player William Workman. William died in June while suffering an epileptic seizure at the age of just 21. He lived in Bluebell Drive on The Meadows in Keynsham and was in the final week of his two-year apprenticeship at KwikFit in the town. Within two days of his death, his best friends Louis Taylor and Connor Mitchell had arranged a football tournament in his memory to raise funds for Epilepsy Research. The event, held at Goals in Brislington on Sunday August 8, attracted 16 teams, and T-shirts were made with William’s photo on the front and his name on the back, to highlight what the event was all about. William’s grandparents, Peggy and Brian Workman, praised those who organised and took part in the event. “So many friends, boys and girls and their families got involved. Raffle prizes were collected from near and far, some coming from famous people. “The support was wonderful. Will would have loved it. He always described himself as ‘Billy No Mates’ but with so many young people all wanting to help those less fortunate, this proved to be far from true. “On behalf on William’s family and friends, we would

POPULAR singalong sessions run by Golden-Oldies will restart in Keynsham this month. The charity, popularly known as Goldies, had to close its daytime sessions for 16 months because of Covid. Its Keynsham sessions, led by Sue Crick, will return on September 24. They will be held on the last Friday of each month at the Key Centre, Keynsham Methodist Church, Charlton Road, BS31 2JA, 2pm to 3pm. The charity was founded by Bath-based musician Grenville Jones, who stresses that it is not about choir singing. “Goldies gives older isolated people something to look forward to, a chance to get out, make new friends and sing along to those popular hits of the past,” he said. Goldies started sessions on YouTube and Facebook during lockdown. These will continue through to next spring. The charity is always looking to recruit new session leaders and to hear from organisations who work with older isolated people. For more information, visit www.golden-oldies.org.uk

BRISTOL BASEBALL CLUB

FRYS BOWLING CLUB

Three shields in a row after tense finish

Thrilling finales for Badgers and Bats

July 30: The 51st Alsop Shield between Frys and Keynsham returned after a year out, with Frys the current holders. Keynsham hosted the game and led in the early ends, but Frys stayed in touch with rink 1 pulling away. Just after halfway, Keynsham went 10 shots up on rink 2, but Frys hit 12 shots in 7 ends to close the deficit. Rink 1 kept pulling away, and with rinks 3 and 4 playing a tight game, it set up a tense finish. The game took a twist, with rink 1 adding a further 10 shots in their last 6 ends. The other 3 rinks outscored Keynsham with their last 6 ends, seeing Frys wrap up their 3rd Alsop Shield in a row. n Scores: Rink 1: 27-9; Rink 2: 18-19; Rink 3: 16-12; Rink 4: 14-19; Frys 85-69 Keynsham. July 29: In the league, Frys looked to continue their good form with a visit from Bradley Stoke. A close game turned on the 14th end on all rinks, with Frys dropping a combined 8 shots. Bradley Stoke won 4350, with rinks 2 and 3 picking up a useful 4 points for Frys. n Scores: Rink 1: 6-25; Rink 2: 13-12; Rink 3: 24-13; Frys 43-50 Bradley Stoke (4-6).

Action from the Badgers and Rebeldes double header at the Somervale Pavilion in Keynsham. Below, Michael Comport hit his maiden home run against Cardiff Merlins THE Badgers and the Bats brought their 2021 campaigns to an end by sweeping their opponents at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham. In the AAA double header, the Badgers overcame SW Rebeldes 4-0 and 11-1, with Tom Hollies shutting out the Rebeldes in game one. As well as shutting out the powerful Rebeldes line-up and striking out eight batters over seven innings pitched, Hollies also contributed two RBIs at the plate. Infielders Rich Green and Carlson Charles had multi-hit games to help the Badgers score early. The Badgers’ offense came alive in the second game with outfielder George Braeger contributing three hits including a triple as the Bristol team racked up a six-run fifth inning. Rhodri Theaker took over from Hollies on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings to round off a successful afternoon. “It was great to finish with a couple of good wins despite a difficult season hit by injuries and absences,” said Bristol head coach Rhodri Theaker. “We stepped up from AA to AAA this season

and we have a great group of players who I believe can move forward and challenge for honours in 2022.” The Bats swept the previously unbeaten Cardiff Merlins 8-5 and 11-1 to finish one game behind the Severn Division champions. Tyron Porter had another good day on the mound, striking out six Merlins as well getting two hits at the plate, while Paul Carter contributed two RBIs to the winning total. The second game saw Bats’ debutant Michael Comport hit a massive home run behind a great pitching performance by Paul Carter, who gave up just one run in his six innings pitched. Carter also had a great game with the bat, with three hits and four RBIs, with catcher Neptali Ortega also having a multi-hit game. “It was probably our best all-round performance and doubly pleasing to beat the champions to finish the season,” said player manager Tom Rowe. “It been great to play a full season, and with a little luck here and there we could have won the title.”

August 5: Begbrook Green ‘A’ hosted Frys, with both clubs in the bottom 3 of the table. As rain fell heavily, both sides exchanged shots, which saw Begbrook take a 3-shot lead after 34 ends. But the next 3 ends saw all Frys rinks combine for 4 shots. The rain resulted in the game being declared, with Frys taking a dramatic 32-31 win and 8 points. n Scores: Rink 1: 10-9; Rink 2: 10-11; Rink 3: 12-11; Frys 32-31 Begbrook Green ‘A’ (8-2). August 12: A struggling Ardagh visited Frys, who took an early lead with rink 2 and pulled away in rink 3, taking an unassailable lead in the game. An average performance on rink 2 saw Ardagh pull back some of the shots, and Frys held a 5-shot lead on the penultimate end. A poor end saw Ardagh hold 5 shots, but Frys skip saved the rink for Frys. Rink 1 had gone 20 shots up, but attacking play from Ardagh saw them close the gap to 7 with 2 ends left. Frys closed the rink out with 3 on the penultimate end. The 72-38 win with 10 points saw Frys jump to 8th in the table with 2 games left. n Scores: Rink 1: 30-17; Rink 2: 18-13; Rink 3: 24-8; Frys 72-38 Ardagh (10-0). Frys’ cup runs came to an end against Bristol St Andrews in the Clarence Davey Plate. A spirited effort fell short 70-80.

KEYNSHAM WALKING FOOTBALL

walk tall after tournaments triumph

KEYNSHAM Walking Football held three successful walking football tournaments in July and August at the AJN Stadium in Keynsham. The invitation events sanctioned by Somerset FA, for over 60s, over 65s and over 70s, attracted teams from Bracknell, Bournemouth, Cirencester, Clevedon, Crewkerne, Highworth (near Swindon), Odd Down, Salisbury and Yeovil. The first event was the over 60s competition, which attracted eight teams who played in groups of four before a semi-final and final. It was won by Highworth Town, who beat the home side on penalties in the final. The Plate Final (for teams finishing 3rd and 4th in their groups) was won by Clevedon Town. The over 65s event was originally scheduled for a week in July but was postponed because of the extremely hot weather. It was eventually played with six teams in a single-league format in August, when Keynsham A were victorious with five straight wins. Highworth Town came second, just pipping Keynsham B for the runners-up spot on goal difference. The over 70s tournament consisted of eight teams in groups of four. Once again Keynsham A were victorious after a nil-nil draw with Second Chance (from Odd Down) in the final and a penalty shoot-out. Highworth Town won the Plate Trophy with a 3-0 victory over Keynsham B. In all, 22 teams took part on three days, with around 200 players playing the beautiful game, but a little slower. The competitions were played in a good spirit, and new friends were made and old acquaintances renewed.

n CAMERTON AND PEASEDOWN CROQUET CLUB

Rain won't stop us supporting heart research CAMERTON and Peasedown Croquet Club had arranged to celebrate 60 years of life-saving research by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) on July 24 - but torrential rain forced its cancellation. The club had already raised £165 to support BHF’s research and treatment of heart and circulatory disease, and members did not want bad weather to get in the way. So, on September 12 from 2pm to 5pm, the club invites everyone to come and try croquet and enjoy a cream tea - all to support the fantastic work carried out by BHF. A warm welcome is guaranteed and a free introduction to croquet awaits, not forgetting ‘crazy croquet’ including Dukes of Hazzard and Tunnel of Doom! Chair Mo Boys said: “Our all-inclusive club is part of Peasedown St John Cricket Club and you can find us just off Whitebrook Lane, Peasedown St John, Bath BA2 8LD. “Croquet is an outdoor sport for everyone, one with health benefits and where, after a short

introduction, you can take part in a game. We look forward to seeing you all on September 12.” This year there’s been a surge in club membership as people look for a new interest. All equipment is provided – just wear flat soled

shoes. If you are interested in trying croquet, please phone Mo Boys on 07929 733640. l Pictured above, the croquet players who raised £165 to support the work of the British Heart Foundation.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

It's time to celebrate as season draws to a close AS we arrive at the tail end of the 2021 bowling season, members look back on what might have happened but did not. While league fixtures against some clubs have been played, the competitiveness has been lost due to the decision to cancel promotion and relegation between divisions, with clubs in 2022 starting in the same divisions as they now are. Activity in cup competitions remained and our men played at home to Bloomfield from Bath in the fifth round of the Turnbull Cup. The match remained on a knife edge right to the finish, with a measure being taken after the final wood was bowled on the last rink playing. Bloomfield won the end by one shot and took the match by 76 to 75 shots. Who says bowls isn’t an exciting game? In the Friday Triples, our men were drawn away to league leaders Avonvale and despite a good win on one of the four rinks, they suffered a heavy defeat on another and lost by five shots. The annual fixture between our men and Frys took place, with Frys being the trophy holders. Frys left Keynsham Park again with the trophy, having won by 75 to 59 shots, despite Keynsham narrowly winning on two of the four rinks. Frys returned to our green some three weeks later to play a Bristol and District League fixture,

when Keynsham won on all three rinks, with shots totalling 48 to 31, and hence picking up all 10 points. During the month we played host to the Southam United Club from Warwickshire, who stopped in Keynsham on their way home from a tour. Keynsham won on four of the five rinks played with a total shot score of 99-70. As a result of our open day earlier in the year, the ladies have welcomed seven new members, taking their number up to nearly 40. The ladies have joined the new Somerset Ladies County League which plays on Saturdays to enable those who work to play competitive bowls. They have performed well in all the cup matches they have played, reaching the quarter finals of the Southey Trophy. Keeping the surroundings of a bowling club plus its buildings in good condition is a timeconsuming and costly exercise. Fortunately we have a dedicated group of men who meet every Monday throughout the year, come rain or shine, to keep everything in order, saving the club a great deal money. In appreciation of their work, one of our generous members decided to give them a treat, and our picture shows them at the Lock Keeper enjoying a drink before tucking into their meal.
