Traders give mixed reaction to hotel plan

'Good for trade, bad for traffic' PLANS for a boutique hotel in Keynsham have met a mixed response from traders who welcome the boost in spending power but not at the expense of congested roads. Business owners say they support plans to turn the former fire station in Temple Street into a 42-bed hotel ‘with a modern look’ in principle. They say the proposed hotel would increase footfall in what is becoming known as the ‘independent quarter’ and would bring more tourists to the town. However, they fear the development will come at a price with further congestion clogging up town centre roads when ‘everyone’s already suffered enough.’ Plans from the Phoenix Group have been submitted to demolish the fire station and build the six-storey building, which includes nine two-bed flats, two shops, and a 45-seat restaurant. The proposals also include a 20-space underground car park Turn to Page 2

The plans state they set “a high-quality benchmark against which future proposals will be assessed and establishes a modern architectural character to this part of Temple Street”. Megan Patten, who works at Bragg Hair Studio, said: “Opening a hotel is a great idea. We should be doing all we can to encourage more people to come to the town and spend money. “There are not many hotels around here so it is just what Keynsham needs. It would be something a little different for the High Street. “The only problem may be a lack of parking, especially as parking is already a massive issue around here.” Nedim Orak, the owner of Pomegranate, said: “It’s all very positive. It’s a great idea and much better than the ugly building that is there now. “It will bring new people to this end of the High Street and hopefully put Keynsham on the map.” Clive Oliver from Keynsham Hardware said most of his customers were simply asking

‘what do we need a hotel for?’ He said: “Personally I have mixed feelings. It’s great that something is finally going to happen to the fire station and anything that gets people to this end of town is good. “But it would mean even more building work and more disruption. Temple Street has already had six years of that.” Cat Midgley from Temple Street Canteen said: “We’re not going to complain about more people being brought to the town, especially when it livens up this end of the High Street. “People are going to complain about the extra traffic and parking, but that comes with every development.” But Bronwyn Clark, manager of Shake Express, said she had different views as a trader and as a life-long resident of Keynsham. She said: “As a trader, it’s a great idea as we’d obviously welcome the additional customers. “But as a resident I think there’s already too much tourist accommodation for a small town. There’s also not enough parking as it is, so this will just make the situation worse. There’s also constantly going to be roadworks so there will be even more holdups on the roads.”

gets mixed response from town traders

The former fire station is between the Riverside residential development, above, and the Civic Centre, below - it closed four years ago

Keynsham South Councillor Alan Hale said the proposed hotel development would be seen by many as “a difficult decision.” He said: “If someone is bringing development to the town, it’s a good thing. But the trouble will be the traffic, the roads and the parking. “The old fire station can’t stay as it is and Temple Street needs to be developed so everything doesn’t stop at Rock Road. “This hotel would be well suited as Temple Street has become the independent quarter, but only if all concerns are addressed.” The Temple Street fire station, in between the Civic Centre and the Riverside development,

closed in November 2015 as the new station opened at Hicks Gate. The site is currently being used as a works depot for the Riverside residential development after a plan to build flats was withdrawn last year. Phoenix Group’s plans say: “The boutique hotel in this central position will be a great asset to the future of Keynsham and would act as a hub for access to both Bath and Bristol and encourage value-added areas of employment.” Public consultation is open until December 5, with Bath and North East Somerset Council expected to make a decision early next year.

n NEWS A BABY boy was unexpectedly welcomed into the world at a Saltford doctor’s surgery as a worried mum-to-be didn’t think she would make it to hospital in time. Corrie Auchterlonie gave birth on the couch in the treatment room at St Augustine’s Medical Practice on the Bath Road just 30 minutes after stopping to ask for help during rush-hour traffic. Corrie had left home in Keynsham with her partner and mother to head to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, but baby Ezra had other plans and wanted to arrive en route! There were no pain relief options and limited medical supplies at the surgery, but baby Ezra was safely delivered by GP Dr Caroline Rance and nurse Katarina Gergelova. The surgery had just opened at 8am on October 14 when Corrie turned up saying she ‘didn’t know what to do as she didn’t think she could get to hospital in time.’ Dr Rance, who herself was 34 weeks pregnant at the time, said: “It was a manic Monday morning and we certainly didn’t expect this to happen as well! “Corrie had been stuck in traffic on the Bath Road and had to think fast. They saw the surgery and came in to ask what to do. She was concerned her contractions were strong and painful. “I took her to the treatment room and gave her paracetamol to calm her down. We called an ambulance but her contractions increased and it all happened so quickly. “We made Corrie as comfortable as we could. We had no real pain relief and weren’t really equipped to deliver a baby, but we had no choice. “Corrie did so well. It was obviously not the birth she had planned, but she did what she had to and baby Ezra was born at 8.35am.” They ‘made do’ with the limited medical equipment they had in the treatment room, including wrapping the baby in couch table paper and bandages, and delivering the placenta into a vomit bowl! Patients in the waiting room were told appointments were delayed as ‘an emergency was being dealt with’ - although Dr Rance said everyone could probably guess what the

The ambulance crew arrived about 10 minutes after Ezra was born and took mother and baby to hospital to be checked over. Previously Dr Rance had only ever delivered babies in ‘controlled environments’ as part of her GP training. She joked that she had ‘sympathy labour contractions during the process’ as she began her own maternity leave just weeks later. Dr Rance said: “Bringing a new life into the world was certainly an eye-opener as to how incredible the female body is. “It was such an amazingly unique

experience to be part of, especially at 34 weeks pregnant myself.” She added: “It was a first for myself and for the surgery. Baby Ezra is the first St Augustine’s Surgery baby. “I’m just so pleased there was a nice, happy ending and mother and baby are doing so brilliantly.” Corrie returned to St Augustine’s Medical Practice a couple of weeks after the birth to thank the staff and properly introduce them to Ezra. She said: “I would love everyone to know just how incredible the staff at the surgery were to me and Ezra.”

Ade's cyborg tale inspires youngsters WHEN school children named their class after one of their favourite authors, they never thought that very Paralympian and TV presenter would pay them a visit. But that is what happened when Ade Adepitan dropped in at Castle Primary School to visit his namesake class. He visited the Adepitan class at the school in Newlands Road, Keynsham, to give them a sneak preview of his new book, Cyborg Cat and the Night Spider. Ade also shared his inspirational story about surviving polio as a child and going on to compete as a wheelchair basketball player. He took the time to answer the children’s questions about himself and his books, and also showed off some of his impressive basketball skills. The school, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently completed its expansion to two-form entry. This is when the four new classrooms, as well as the existing ten classes, were named after children’s authors to try to develop every child’s love of reading.

The Friends of Castle are also fundraising to create a new library and have invested £10,000 in new books. Head teacher Chris Cannings said: “As we continue fundraising for the new library, as part of our aim to instil a lifelong love of reading in all our pupils, Ade’s visit really inspired all our children, with two of our most reluctant readers immediately asking to take copies of his book home with them that very afternoon. “The children’s verdict was that his story of overcoming challenges in his life has inspired them to truly believe they can achieve anything, with some adding that it was the best day at school ever!” Ade, who was awarded an MBE for his contribution to disabled sport, represented Great Britain at the Paralympics. He is now a popular TV personality, presenting many of his own shows, as well as being a regular on The One Show. The school’s Adepitan and Morpurgo classes also went to Bath Children’s Literature Festival to hear Ade talking more about his books.

Osteoarthritis in dogs and cats

O

steoarthritis is a very common condition in dogs and cats, as it is in people. About 30-50% of dogs and cats will be affected by the condition at some stage in their lives. Osteoarthritis causes the joint tissues, including the cartilage, to degenerate over time, leading to pain and inflammation. One of the classic signs of osteoarthritis in dogs is stiffness after rest, which usually improves as the dog ‘warms up’ during exercise. However, in more severe cases, exercise may make the stiffness worse. In cats the signs are more subtle, but can include reluctance to jump, sleeping more or lack of grooming. Signs may be worse in cold, damp weather. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is usually made during physical examination by your vet. Radiographs are sometimes taken to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out other conditions that cause lameness. Sometimes more advanced imaging such as CT scans are necessary for diagnosis. Osteoarthritis can’t be cured but can be managed successfully using a multimodal approach. The mainstay of treatment are painkillers which reduce inflammation in the joints. Your vet will discuss options with you to find the most suitable one for your pet. In early or mild cases, joint supplements or specific joint diets may be sufficient. It is also important to ensure your pet is at a good bodyweight to reduce load on the joints. Exercise is important but should be as consistent as possible, without large variations in duration or intensity. Exercise levels should be tailored to the individual animal. Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy can sometimes be helpful to maintain muscle mass and fitness. If you are concerned that your pet is showing symptoms of arthritis, make an appointment with your vet for an examination. Charles Keys MRCVS

Dave Gorham, the owner of Blades Barbers and Dudes n Dolls Beauty, died suddenly at home on November 6, aged 56. He was a familiar face around Keynsham, having expanded his barbering businesses in Temple Street over the last 18 years. Dave opened Blades Barbers in 2001 in small premises at 36 Temple Street. He prided himself on offering a quality service and built up a loyal client base. He later moved the business to bigger premises and its current location at 8 Temple Street. He was also a devoted family man who idolised his children. He was married to Samantha and leaves behind four children - Dean, 36, Lee, 31, Tia, 15, and Jaden, six. Samantha said: “Dave was the most amazing man - entrepreneurial, a devoted father, loyal friend and the most supportive boss one could wish for. “He was loved by so many and was always keen to support the local businesses. We would do anything to see him driving around in his Blades Smart Car again. “Blades was Dave’s ‘baby’ and thanks to his business mind, all the customers and loyal staff, made a dream he once had 18 years ago grow wings and

Dave would want us to ensure the business lived on in his memory and we will do just that.” The Blades Barbers Facebook page has almost 100 tributes to Dave. People have commented how caring and friendly he was, how hard he worked to achieve his dream and how much he will be missed. One person wrote ‘beautiful smile with a beautiful soul’ while another wrote ‘Dave is an inspiration to so many people.’ Samantha said: “As you can imagine, we as a family and employer are absolutely devastated with this shocking and sudden news. We would like to thank everyone for all their kind wishes, cards, flowers and support.” Dave’s funeral will be on Monday December 2 at 2.45pm at the top chapel at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath, followed by a wake at the Farrington Inn, Farrington Gurney.

Plastic litter protest targets takeways

ENVIRONMENTAL groups have combined forces in the first of a series of protests to try to stop plastic packaging used by fast-food outlets ending up on the streets. About 20 peaceful protesters gathered outside KFC and Domino’s Pizza at Broadmead Lane, Keynsham, to try to prevent littering ‘at its source’ The anti-plastic demonstration on Friday November 15 at 5pm was a joint initiative between the Keynsham Wombles, Saltford Wombles and Keynsham Plastic Re-Action. They handed out leaflets to customers and even presented both store managers with an ‘imaginary’ invoice for the annual cost of their volunteer litter-pickers. They worked out that each takeaway is responsible for an annual cost of £1,042.57 for picking up takeout food and drink containers. At a cost of £9 per hour, Keynsham and Saltford Wombles spent more than

800 hours picking up litter and the cost was divided equally between the seven takeaways in the area. A bag of KFC litter collected along the A4 between the takeaway and Saltford in the week leading up to the event was also presented back to the manager. Helen Stone of Keynsham Plastic Re-Action said their aim was to highlight the costs of clearing up their litter and to suggest they make a contribution to these costs. She said: “We want takeaways to look at transferring all their packaging to fully biodegradable options and to help try to change the behaviour of a proportion of customers who drop litter. “This was just the first of many protests. We plan to target all the area’s fast food outlets one at a time.” To find out more about campaigns organised by Keynsham Plastic Re-Action, visit the group’s Facebook page.

ON THE BEAT

t’s always nice to start off with some good news. This month a member of the public reported finding some expensive tools that had been hidden by an offender, most likely for them to collect later. Some of the PCSOs collected these items and I used my police Facebook account to advertise that they had been found and that we were seeking the owner. Within two hours we had located the owner, who collected the tools later that day. Although to date we have been unable to locate the offender for the original theft from a vehicle, we did also gain some useful intelligence about them and are confident of locating them soon. n With the good comes the bad. This month St John’s Church on the High Street was attacked by some juveniles, who caused £350 worth of damage to the windows. Luckily the church has a very

n NEWS

with PC James Evans good CCTV system, which we have managed to use, and due to our links to local schools, we have been able to identify the offenders, who will be getting a knock on their door very soon so they can answer for their poor behaviour. We have also had some damage caused to the lighting next to the bandstand, but I am reliably informed that the new CCTV camera installed at the bandstand has captured the incident, so I am hopeful that we will also be able to identify these offenders. n Both Halloween and Bonfire Night passed without major incident. We had extra staffing from the

Neighbourhood Policing Team to deal with the inevitable increase in reported incidents. As usual, we will have some staff on hand for the Keynsham Winter Festival, so if you see us about then please stop and say hello. n I was really pleased with the turnout for the Keynsham Remembrance Parade which, due to the dry weather, was a great success. I was honoured to be in the parade and marched alongside Police Sergeant Bagnowiec. This is the first time he has marched in the parade since his appointment to our team and although I had warned him of the numbers, he was taken back by how busy it was. We then went over to Bath to support their officers with the parade, which saw a number of dignitaries move from the Guildhall to Bath Abbey, and I have to say that in the area of the Guildhall we definitely had more spectators, which is a credit to the community spirit of Keynsham.

Ambitions for school future

THE new headteacher at Broadlands Academy is settling into his new role by drawing up plans for changes at the school. Nathan Thomas, who is the new Executive Headteacher, is looking at all aspects of school life so that he can see where development is needed. The change at the helm of the school comes after former principal James Hall made ‘the sad and personal decision’ to step down with immediate effect at the end of September. Mr Hall wrote in the school newsletter: “Broadlands is an amazing school, with fantastic students and incredible staff. The school has grown in all possible areas, and with the new leadership team and structures in place, I know it will continue to improve in the years to come.” The school, which is part of Academies Enterprise Trust, has also expanded its leadership team. It comes after the school saw 41 per cent of students securing 9-4 in both English and Maths in their GSCEs this year.

Stefan Edwards will hand over the keys after nearly two-and-a-half years running the popular café on Temple Street in Keynsham. He has made the difficult decision to hand over the business on Saturday December 21 as he wants to spend more time with his family. And he is so grateful for all the support he’s had from the community that he is inviting everyone to his farewell party, which will include food and live music. Stefan said: “I will be closing the doors for my final time just before Christmas but I want to end on a high with something really special. I’m going out with a bang. “I want to celebrate everything we’ve achieved and say a huge thank-you to our supporters as we couldn’t have done it without everyone around us. “I want to thank all the staff and the community for making us what we have become. It was their kindness and generosity that made it work. Everyone has been so lovely and supportive.” Temple Street Canteen opened in October 2017 and employs eight part-time staff. It is known for hosting a wide variety of events such as live music, story-telling, book clubs and wine nights, as well as Alzheimer’s Disease and Postnatal Depression support groups. It also hosts free lunches for children every Tuesday in the school holidays. The café also cooked up a Christmas Day meal for those who may otherwise have been alone, thanks to donations from the community. Stefan has thoroughly enjoyed his time getting to know so many members of the community and making new friends. He said: “I hope I am remembered for the café’s ethos to create a sense of community. “Temple Street Canteen is seen as the heart of the community, which is a great achievement in such a short space of time.” Stefan is now looking forward to spending more time with his wife and 18-month-old daughter. n NEWS A SCHOOL girl has been praised for going ‘above and beyond’ to help and comfort a pensioner who had fallen over and broken her pelvis. Laciemae Furlong was with friends after school when she heard cries for help and discovered an 81-year-old woman lying on the pavement in agony. The 14-year-old Broadlands Academy student called for an ambulance and got in touch with the pensioner’s family, and refused to leave until the paramedics arrived. Laciemae stayed by the woman’s side in the pouring rain, made sure she was warm enough and talked to her for more than an hour. She said she didn’t think twice about stopping to help and staying with her as ‘it could have been my Nan.’ Staff at Broadlands Academy were so impressed with her actions that they praised her in an assembly, and she was awarded a Headteacher’s Commendation for her act of kindness. Laciemae said: “I heard a lady screaming for help. I didn’t know what had happened but she was on the ground on her back, saying her hip and leg hurt. “I stayed with her. I didn’t want to leave. I could see she was in a lot of pain and I tried to keep her in the same position. “Some other people came over to help. They got blankets out their cars to keep her warm and we put up umbrellas as it was raining so hard. “But lots of people just walked straight past. I just kept thinking I had to help as it could have been my Nan and I wouldn’t want her to be in pain.” Laciemae was with her cousin, Lilly Taiani, 14, on Holloway Road in Stockwood at about 5pm on October 9 when she responded to the woman’s screams. She said it was the first time she had ever called for an ambulance and had been nervous as she ‘didn’t want to say anything wrong.’ But she managed to explain what had happened, where she was and where the pensioner was in pain. The pensioner was eventually taken to hospital after her fall and needed surgery, but she is now back at home and walking again.

This is not the answer to our energy needs

Jon Monie (Louis La Plonk) and Nick Wilton (Dame Polly La Plonk) prepare for the fun at the Theatre Royal, Bath Photo: Freia Turland

Classic panto fun for families ONE of the best-loved stories in children’s literature comes to the Theatre Royal, Bath, with an award-winning script by Jon Monie. Beauty & The Beast will run at the theatre from December 12 to January 12. Wendi Peters (Coronation Street, Hetty Feather White Christmas and Big - currently in the West End) plays Fairy Bon-Bon. Bath comedian and panto legend Jon Monie returns as Louis La Plonk, reviving his comedy partnership with Nick Wilton, EastEnders' Mr Lister and one of the best dames in the business. IN reference to your headline ‘Putrid smell’ protest at bid for food waste plant (issue 92), the proposed Queen Charlton anaerobic digestion (AD) plant is NOT a food waste-to-energy plant. Rather, it would entirely run on crops like maize that are grown specifically to feed it. There is no likelihood that in the foreseeable future the plant will be able to use food waste, as the B&NES contract with Geneco in Avonmouth still has many years to run. When the original project was proposed, it won planning permission in the Green Belt partly because it turned food waste into energy and therefore helped reduce the carbon footprint of thrown-away food. However, growing crops specifically to generate energy (biogas) increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These crops use land that could grow food, strip soils of their nutrients and are reliant on carbon-intensive fertilisers. Trucking them to the plant would cause further pollution. Turning food waste into energy can be part of the answer to achieve a net-zero carbon energy system, but growing and trucking crops to exclusively feed an AD plant is not. Instead, we should generate power locally on our rooftops, hills and rivers that is owned by the community, supplies the community and whose profits go back to the community. Keynsham Gas Works. In the 19th century the wonders of gas, particularly for lighting, were discovered and the Keynsham Gas Company was set up in 1857. The works were at the bottom of Dapps Hill and comprised two small gas-holders and a retort house, where the gas was manufactured. This picture was probably taken in the late 1890s and shows what was originally the manager’s house, with the other structures behind. The works closed in 1928, when demand from the new Fry factory required a new main from Bristol to Keynsham.

n ELECTION NEWS

Candidates to do battle VOTERS go to the polls on December 12 for the country's third general election in less than five years. In North East Somerset, the Conservatives are defending a majority of 10,235 from the last election in 2017. Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg is standing for re-election to the seat he has held since the constituency was created in 2010. This year there are five candidates contesting the constituency: the others are Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Independent. As in all Tory-held seats, the Brexit party is not standing a candidate. The constituency runs from Keynsham in the north to the southern areas around Midsomer Norton and Radstock. It takes in the outskirts of Bath in the east and covers the rural villages of the Chew Valley to the west. The Voice asked every candidate nominated to tell us about themselves and their aims. They are included here in the order they will appear on the ballot paper.

OUR politicians are failing us, we all know that. So why on earth did I give up my job to campaign to be your MP? It’s very simple. I’ve spent my life fighting injustice and helping people who are being let down by the system. But I can do more good by getting inside the system and fixing it. I will focus 100% on my service to the people of North East Somerset. No second, third or fourth jobs for me. I will be fighting to: l Stop Brexit and invest the £50 billion Remain Bonus in our desperately cash-strapped public services and for tackling inequality.  l Local climate action. Stop the expansion of Bristol Airport and introduce cheaper, greener and more reliable buses. l A home you can afford. Genuinely affordable housing for both renters and buyers. l Supporting local schools. Properly funded local schools where teachers and staff are free to work for your children, not league tables. l Safer streets. Reverse the austerity that has decimated our police and re-establish a local police presence in our communities. l Better social care for the elderly. Social care services must be expanded so that people can continue to live in their own homes in old age.

FIRST it was the despair of the West Harptree teacher who could not bear to see her pupils denied the quality education they deserve. Then it was the Keynsham carer who did not know whether she will keep the job on which her patients depend. Most recently it was the Writhlington mum who barely has the money to feed her kids during school holidays. The experiences of families, teachers, health professionals and pensioners across North East Somerset have for me been as heart-breaking as they have been inspiring for the courage they reveal. As our communities endure economic stagnation, political uncertainty and inadequate public services, the most important role of a parliamentary candidate and MP is to listen, learn and act quickly to bring relief and hope. I have spent my entire working life listening. As a war correspondent I listened to people’s stories, and brought their suffering to the attention of the world. As a businessman I listen to my employees, and help them through challenging times. As a parent I listen to and advise my children as they set off into the world. As MP for North East Somerset I will be the servant of all the people – by listening, learning, and working tirelessly to make life better.

Shaun Hughes, Independent

Jacob Rees-Mogg, Conservative

Fay Whitfield, Green

SHAUN Hughes is a local businessman from Midsomer Norton and a newly elected councillor on B&NES Council, who would like to see a North East Somerset MP more focused on the issues within our area such as crime and anti-social behaviour, housing, local employment, health services and care of our elderly - and of course we have a climate emergency. Although it’s a vitally important issue, this election is unlikely to solve Brexit, and leave or remain the issues will continue well into the future. Shaun’s personal opinion is that we should give the population an opportunity to reaffirm their wish to leave, now that they have all the facts. If the answer is yes, we should leave, whilst also bringing the nation together behind this policy. Whatever the outcome he is confident the UK will succeed with the right leadership from Parliament, and feels that this will require more independent thinking and less party politics.

Jacob Rees-Mogg was brought up in Somerset and lives in West Harptree with his wife Helena and their six children. Most of his weekends are devoted to holding surgeries for local people and visiting local businesses, charitable organisations and community events. In what few spare moments he gets, he supports Somerset County Cricket Team. Jacob says, “At the forthcoming General Election only a Conservative Government will deliver Brexit and ensure a strong United Kingdom and prosperity for all. The alternative is a Labour Government under Jeremy Corbyn, supported by Nicola Sturgeon, surrendering to Brussels whilst presiding over a break-up of the UK and economic disaster.” In asking for his constituents’ votes, Jacob says, “You can shape the future of our country with a choice between a Conservative Government delivering Brexit – or a Labour Government delivering many more months of Brexit delay. “It has been an honour serving my constituents as their MP and if re-elected I shall continue to work hard for them, both in Westminster and here in North East Somerset”.

I'M running in this election to give a voice to those who are not well represented in politics, especially the younger generation. My generation have spent their entire adult lives in austerity, trying to start their lives while being told to 'tighten their belts'. And then on top of that, we've now been told there is effectively 10 years left to prevent the worst effects of climate change, and if we fail then it us who have to bear the consequences. Because of this voters will know I stand for three things: 1) preventing climate change by subsidising sustainable practices in agriculture and clean energy, saying no to Bristol Airport expansion, and insulating homes. 2) supporting a green economy which provides green jobs that prevent climate change, which makes living more affordable and which invests in local infrastructure. 3) Creating a democracy which works for everyone, not just those with the deepest pockets or who can shout the loudest, by backing a People’s Vote, proportional representation and votes at 16.

n NEWS AN ACTION group has uncovered the boundary walls of an abandoned woodland as they take the next step to create a nature reserve in the heart of Keynsham. Ten volunteers from the Fox and Hounds Lane Action Group (FAHLAG) rolled up their sleeves to clear ivy and other vegetation from the walls and expose the original stonework. After 30 years of neglect, the walls were overgrown with ivy and being threatened by the roots of trees. The volunteers met at the overgrown patch of land, at the junction of Bath Road and Fox and Hounds Lane, armed with secateurs, loppers and saws. The working party carried out the task on November 9 to enable an independent survey of the walls to be carried out. Committee member Dave Sage said the volunteers had braved the weather on a cold and wet Saturday morning. He said: “Although very soggy at the end, everyone had the satisfaction of knowing that the aim had been accomplished and excellent progress was made in spite of the weather.” The site was listed for sale by Bath and North East Somerset Council last year and the action group was formed to keep it in public hands and turn it into a nature reserve. The group’s long-term aim is to restore the garden as a safe and secure local nature reserve for the community to enjoy and for wildlife to thrive. Earlier this year volunteers uncovered a pond at the site, which had been created by Wellsway School students in the 1980s. It is now hoped the pond will form a key feature of the nature reserve. FAHLAG secretary Margaret Maxwell said the project was drawing support from across the town. In just a year FAHLAG has gone from strength to strength, attracting considerable local interest and offers of sponsorship from businesses. Margaret said: “Saving this little area of woodland seems to have captured the public imagination. Our membership is growing and we are steadily building our case to protect the land as a local nature reserve.” Further working parties will be held throughout the year, taking care during the

New lease secures future of popular rail attraction THE FUTURE of a treasured local heritage attraction is set to be secured with the agreement of a new 65-year lease over part of the Bristol to Bath Railway Path. The stretch in Bitton, which includes the popular railway station and track, has been occupied by Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust since the 1970s, with the council having granted an initial 20-year lease of the site in 1982. But since its expiry in 2002, the agreement has been on a year-to-year basis. The charity is dedicated to restoring steam to the Avon Valley and has re-laid three miles of track and restored a locomotive and carriages. It welcomes more than 80,000 visitors each year. Following negotiations with the Trust, South Gloucestershire Council worked to broker a new 65-year lease that gives future stability to the attraction. Now only requiring formal acceptance from the Trust, it also means they will be in a position to apply for funding which will progress plans to further develop existing facilities. Bitton and Oldland Common councillor

Plans for new petrol station

Erica Williams said: “South Gloucestershire is an area rich with local history and it is important we preserve this wherever we can. The work put in by Avon Valley Railway Trust and their many volunteers to share that heritage with the communities around them, as well as tourists, is fantastic.” An Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust spokesperson said: “We welcome the progress so far on the new lease and on its completion it will provide the necessary security of tenure in helping us to achieve our future plans.”

PLANS are afoot for a new fully automated petrol station at Asda in Longwell Green. The supermarket has submitted proposals to South Gloucestershire Council to demolish the existing station and build one with eight pumps, giving a total of 16 filling stations. A car and jet wash are also included in the plans along with new air, water and vacuum machines. As part of the application, agents CA Design said: “The facility as a whole provides an important service for customers, in a convenient location but the facility is dated and coming to the end of its useful life. The new facility will enhance customer experience and provide improved safety and environmental protection measures. “Overall, it is considered the proposed station design and automated format represents a compact and efficient facility with minimal impact on the existing store operations and sits unobtrusively within the existing environment.” A decision is expected to be made before January 24, 2020.

Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford are also holding their annual food collection for homeless people this Christmas. On Saturday December 7, from 9am to 12 noon, they will be collecting food donations outside the Methodist Church and Poundland store in Keynsham High Street. Mike added: “Folk in Keynsham have been very generous in their support in the past and we hope that this can be repeated this year.”

Golfers' aid for charity BIDS for an impressive selection of donated gifts raised more than £1,500 for charity at Saltford Golf Club. The auction raised a total of £1,620 for Captain Marcus Woodward’s charity of the year, Alzheimer’s Research. A further £100 was raised for Cancer Research UK by auctioning a 4ball voucher in recognition of Tony Crocker, Dave Vince, Ben Jones and Sean Oswin playing 72 holes in one day in very bad weather. The fundraising was part of the ‘Captain’s Last Stand’ Charity Day. The winners were Nick Perkins, Jon Sandell, Nigel Shaw and Duncan Wellington. The winning team – Beaufort Bespoke Kitchens – retained the trophy. It was the tenth year of the Texas Scramble event, which has raised a total of nearly £17,000 in that time. Chocolate Factory is home for Mitie A BUSINESS has now consolidated its three sites into its new primary location in Keynsham. Mitie has moved its staff into The Chocolate Factory in The Chocolate Quarter – taking the entire first floor of the building, a space of 17,000 sq ft. Staff from Mitie’s offices at Harlequin Office Park at Emersons Green, Argentum House on Coldharbour Lane and Temple Quay in Bristol have relocated. Mitie provides facilities management, consultancy, project management and a range of specialist services. The move-in date went ahead as planned in late October and the company’s refit included the installation of 16 electric vehicle charge points for its company fleet. Mitie has a commitment to transition 20 per cent of its fleet to electric by 2020.

The Chocolate Factory forms part of the St Monica Trust’s Chocolate Quarter development, completed in 2017. The former Cadbury’s site is now home to

140 assisted-living apartments, a 90-bed care home, and a range of retail and leisure facilities open to the public, including a gym, restaurant and café.

Tom Dugay, of Alder King property consultancy, said The Chocolate Factory had pulling power as a business location. He said: “The St Monica Trust has created an exceptionally high-quality office development in The Chocolate Factory. “The property has attracted a select group of high-calibre tenants who clearly recognise the value in providing their staff with an excellent working environment in a vibrant mixeduse location and with a good range of on-site amenities. “The ongoing success of the scheme has certainly helped promote Keynsham as a sustainable business location.” Other occupiers at The Chocolate Factory include Pukka Herbs, Independent Vetcare and St Augustine’s Surgery. There is now only one ground-floor office suite of 5,200 sq ft left.

Head start for family venture

A FAMILY tradition is continuing with the opening of a new barber shop. Morris Mercato, who has owned Morris’ Barber Shop in Saltford for 12 years, has now opened Supreme Cuts in Marksbury, which will be run by his son Nico. Morris, who lives in Keynsham with his wife and son, said: “I had my own business at 17, and I would like to give my son the same opportunities my father gave to me. “My barbering career started as a young lad having to watch and learn from my older brother after school and on Saturdays. “I am proud that Nico is following in my

footsteps, and this shop is his platform for carving out his own successful career in the barbering industry.” Morris chose Marksbury as the site for his new venture because he believes there is no similar shop in the immediate area and that the surrounding villages will greatly benefit. There is also plenty of free parking. The new shop offers traditional cuts, as well as the latest skin fades and beard trims. It caters for all ages, from children to OAPs and everyone in-between. Morris said: “We are a welcoming, modern and contemporary barber shop, with

Neil Rogers, regional manager for Truespeed, said: “We are proud to work with local businesses and are delighted to have partnered with one of Keynsham’s favourite restaurants, Cinnamon, for the benefit of the wider community.” The partnership gives everyone who signs up with Truespeed in December a £20 voucher to enjoy at the Indian restaurant as well as the food bank donation. Cinnamon manager Ami said: “We are delighted to be working with Truespeed supporting the community of Keynsham with this very worthy cause by funding the food bank. “Cinnamon restaurant is focusing on its social responsibility and working hard towards the reduction of plastic usage and has introduced plant-based menus.” For details of how to claim your voucher from Truespeed, visit www.truespeed.com/ keynsham or call 01225 300370. Chase with his medals from the Men’s Artistic Gymnast National Finals

Chase beats the odds to be a gym superstar SUPERSTAR gymnast Chase Vanstechelman is building up an impressive collection of medals after beating off competition from around the UK. The 11-year-old from Saltford scooped two medals at the Men’s Artistic Gymnast National Finals in Birmingham. His double victory in the competition included an individual and a team win. He topped the leaderboard and finished in first place as an individual, and was named 2019 National Finals Champion at Club Level 3. He also helped his teammates in the South West Gymnastics Squad achieve third place. All competing gymnasts had to qualify through regional competitions to win a place at the National Finals. The wins were a fantastic achievement as Chase has been unable to compete or fully train for more than six months due to a serious injury. He dislocated and fractured his elbow in February this year and had to have surgery for a screw to be inserted. Chase, who is in Year 7 at Wellsway School, is also a familiar face to many as he is among the cast of CBBC’s Gym Stars TV show. He is currently filming the third season of the programme, which goes behind the scenes of the lives of some of the UK’s most promising young gymnasts.

Chase’s dad Tony Vanstechelman said: “It was an amazing achievement and we are so proud of him. “We didn’t think he’d be able to compete again after a potentially careerending injury, but he’s very determined and proved us all wrong.” Chase started gymnastics when he was aged just four-years-old and started competing just a few years later. He now trains for at least 20 hours a week at the City of Bristol Gymnastics Centre in Hartcliffe. He trains from 4pm to 8pm five days a week, grabbing something to eat in the car on the drive from school to the gym. Gymnastics run in the family with Chase following in the footsteps of his sisters, dad and grandad. Tony said: “It is hard as Chase spends so much time in the gym, but he copes exceptionally well. “He’s so focused and very disciplined so he’s able to manage really well.” Chase is now preparing to go headto-head with the country’s top-level gymnasts at the British Championships in 2020. But it remains his ultimate dream to become an Olympian and represent his country at the highest level. Watch Chase on the new season of Gym Stars, which starts in the Spring, and follow him on Instagram @gymstarschase

Yvonne's love of stories inspires tale of Tatty Tot A FORMER teacher has written her first children’s book, as story time was always her favourite part of the school day. Yvonne Gilroy has penned a book called Tatty Tot so she can continue to ‘light up the faces’ of children. The picture book, which is aimed at children aged three to five, is based on a little dog who loves everything - apart from taking baths! It’s a story about how he does everything he can to avoid soap and water. Yvonne, who lives in Keynsham, got her inspiration from her own dog called Oscar, who is a Yorkipoo, a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a poodle. She said: “I was previously a teacher and ran my own nursery, and my favourite part was always story time. I loved sharing stories with children. “I really enjoy the responses of children when they listen to a story; how they react when they hear the story developing. “They are just mesmerised and you can almost see them thinking about what is going to happen next.” Yvonne previously worked as head of early years at a school in central Bristol then ran her own pre-school, Here We Grow, at Saltford Hall for about four years. She said she’d always been

interested in writing and started by doing a writing course. She said writing a book gave her something to do when she closed the pre-school, or as she calls it ‘a project.’ It took Yvonne about two years to produce the book, from coming up with the idea and learning the skill to writing, finding an illustrator and printing the book. She wanted to ‘keep it local’ so selected illustrator Alex Crump from near Swindon and the book was printed in Bristol. But she’s not stopping there she is planning further books so that Tatty Tot can get up to more adventures. She already has two more ideas for books and you can be sure that Tatty Tot will be getting up to mischief even when he’s trying to be good. Yvonne said: “It’s exceptionally rewarding to know I’ve written my first book. “I always thought writing a book would be a lovely thing to do, but I never actually thought it would happen. It’s so lovely that so many people have fallen in love with Tatty Tot. I’m really proud of that.” The book costs £6.99 and is available to buy by emailing yvonnegilroy@btinternet.com For updates on Tatty Tot and local storytelling sessions, like Tatty Tot @yvonnegilroy55 on Facebook.

War memorial unveiled A WAR memorial honouring the lives of 62 men who lost their lives in the First World War has been unveiled at the Frenchay home of Dings Crusaders RFC. The tribute is in memory of members of the Shaftesbury Crusade, a Christian mission based in St Philips which led to the establishment of the rugby club. The 62 men were among the 346 from the mission, set up to encourage young people from the Dings to take part in sport, who fought during the war. The sandstone memorial was donated by the Sanigar family in memory of their brother Mike, a stalwart member of Dings Crusaders RFC. A service, conducted by former Dings player the Rev Trevor Denley, took place during the unveiling on Saturday November 16, prior to the Dings home game against Taunton Titans.

n BACK TO NATURE

Nikki's adventures with animals and

T

he November talk on behalf of the Keynsham group of the Avon Wildlife Trust certainly lived up to the high standards that our audiences are coming to expect, writes chairman Dave Sage. The speaker was Nikki Waldron, BBC wildlife producer, based at the Natural History Unit (NHU) in Bristol, sometimes known as “Green Hollywood”, while the annual Wildscreen viewings are often coined “the Green Oscars”, so global is its renown and influence. The talk was entitled Never Work with Animals or Children, something she has spent her working life doing! Totally ignoring her own advice, she brought along her own two delightful primary-age children as her technical assistants: they already look set to follow in mum’s footsteps! A zoology graduate from Bristol University in 2001, Nikki began at the BBC on unpaid work experience, before working her

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group way up to becoming a highly skilled, respected and valued member of the 200-plus team at the NHU. She has been a producer for the last 15 years. She explained that the unit is divided into two areas; firstly, the production side, which makes the films; secondly, the production management team, which deals with costings and feasibility of film productions. Nikki has considerable experience in both areas, including 10 year ago spending over three weeks with just a cameraman on a deserted Deception Island, one of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica, filming Chinstrap

penguins and Leopard seals. More recently, she has become established on the production management team, but this has not stopped her from travelling and working to remote regions of the world, in search of unique wildlife filming opportunities. Her portfolio is impressive, including being involved in preparations for, and live filming of the “Watches” (Springwatch, Autumnwatch, etc). Interspersed with live segments from Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and others, are prerecorded clips featuring wildlife from all over the UK. Nikki showed us a delightful and dramatic clip of a pregnant mouse building a nest inside an old mattress in the attic of a house (or so we thought). Narrowly escaping the lethal spring of a mousetrap, she safely gave birth to a litter of tiny pink babies. The whole clip was filmed on set in a studio near Bristol. The five-

day shoot produced a five-minute clip for Springwatch; a not unusual ratio of filming time to edited clip time. Nikki was also heavily involved with the filming and production of Steve Backshall’s award-winning series Deadly 60, which was filmed over seven years in nine different countries. Along similar lines was its spin-off programme Live 'n Deadly, produced for younger viewers on CBBC and co-hosted by Helen Wilkinson, of whom Nikki spoke very highly. Nikki shared some hair-raising clips of Steve feeding fish to 3m-long American crocodiles in Central America in the dead of night; diving with Great White Sharks; a deadly Costa Rican Eyelash Viper striking a balloon of warm water on the end of a stick; Steve handling a “tame” female Anaconda snake and getting a nasty bite from it live on air – “cut to Helen!”; and Helen immersing her hand in a tank of hagfish, pulling it out covered in thick,

Slimming eases Valerie's diabetes symptoms OFF the back of World Diabetes Day in November, Valerie Turner is celebrating after losing 2.5 stone, reducing her diabetes symptoms and the need for as much medication - and has been crowned Miss Slinky! Valerie's inspirational story supports research revealing that Slimming World is successful in supporting patients who have type 2 diabetes to lose weight and manage their glucose control. Valerie, who attends the Keynsham Slimming World Group, having joined in June, says: “I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago, and the doctor told me my blood sugar was dangerously high, my weight was seriously impacting my health and I needed to take control of my weight to help manage the condition. He also advised that I had a fatty liver which was very high risk, and the shock of that terrified me. “Being overweight impacted on so many aspects of my life, from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit to not being able to do simple everyday tasks like walking along the High Street without feeling tired and out of breath.” After being encouraged to attend by her daughter, Valerie decided to join a group. “Walking through those doors was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I needn't have worried though. Everyone there was so

friendly, especially my consultant Kelly. The group were so welcoming too.” With support from her diabetes care team, Valerie followed the Slimming World's Food Optimising eating plan and started cooking healthy meals from scratch. She swapped sweet snacks for oranges. She says: “People think slimming means going hungry, yet it's not like that at all with this healthy eating plan. I love food and it's never once felt like I was on 'a diet' - in fact, people are always surprised at how much food I have on my plate. I can tailor the plan to fit my dietary needs and I can do this with support from my diabetic nurse. “This means I still enjoy all my favourite

Got News? Call Keynsham Voice on 0117 9082121

meals like spaghetti bolognaise and a full English breakfast. I've just learned how to make small changes like eating lots of vegetables, using lean meat or cooking with low calorie spray instead of oil or butter.” Today Valerie's lost a total of 2st 7lb and gone from size 22 to 14. She's also more active and regularly hula-hoops at home. “Thanks to the changes I've made I no longer wear a daily morphine patch to ease my lower back pain and I have reduced my diabetes medicine. After a recent scan my fatty liver has improved dramatically too. I've got my life back and I couldn't be happier.” Kelly, who runs the Thursday Keynsham Slimming World group, says: “We know the obesity crisis is a ticking timebomb, and type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity too. We believe the support you get from being in a warm, empowering group environment is key to helping you eat more healthily and becoming more active too. “The changes we've seen in Valerie are incredible. I hope her success will inspire other people in Keynsham who'd like to lose weight and improve their health by forming new lifestyle habits and become happier to take action. “There's a warm welcome waiting at Slimming World and, just think, if you start today you could feel like a completely new person, just like Valerie.”

he Keynsham in Bloom Community Group would like to say a huge thankyou to all our lovely volunteering knitters and crafters who have been busy making poinsettias, Christmas roses, hellebores and pom poms in preparation for decorating our Christmas tree as part of the St John’s Church Christmas tree festival. Please do pop into St. John’s Church between December 6 and 8 and take a look at our tree. n Thank you also to members of our community who visited our stall at the Keynsham Baptist Church craft fair on Saturday November 9. This was a good start to our fund-raising efforts to buy a memorial planter and presentation cup in memory of our chair, Dee James. n The group would like to congratulate Keynsham in Bloom’s most inspiring entry for 2019. This award went to Mich and Angie of allotment plot 115. They were awarded a shield as well as a rose called ‘Remember Me’ in memory of Dee James. n As November comes to a close, you may have noticed that our volunteers have been busy planting up the planters in our town’s outskirt shopping areas (Chandag, Longmeadow and Queens Road). The railway station has also had fresh bedding plants in the troughs and planters. which will be welcoming for both our local train users and visitors to the town. The recent frost has sadly made the begonias in our High Street planters droop, so you will see us on out and about tidying these up in the next few weeks. n On Friday November 29, the group is running a fund-raising stall at the Keynsham Winter Festival. Find us in the Fear Hall, where we will be holding a ‘guess the name of the bee’ competition and promoting our 2020 open garden event. n During December, members will be planning for our 2020 activities including the

New primary school will be 'important for families' PREPARATIONS are continuing for the opening of a new primary school in Keynsham next year to meet the town’s growing population. The Two Rivers Church of England Primary School will be based on the new Hygge Park development near Wellsway School in Chandag Road. It will open in September 2020 with its first cohort of reception-class pupils and will be run by Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which operates 13 other schools in Keynsham, Bristol and Bath. It will initially open with 30 reception-class children and will grow to a full primary school with space for 420 pupils over the next seven years. Children and staff will be placed in purpose-built temporary accommodation on the Wellsway School site until the new buildings are ready, which is expected to be in 2021/22. Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, said the new school

was an important development for families in Keynsham. She said: “I am delighted to be involved in opening this new primary school for Keynsham. “As a trust we have a family of 13 other schools from Bristol to Bath. We are really excited about opening Two Rivers CoE Primary School, which is an important development for families in Keynsham.” The Wellsway Multi Academy is working with Bath and North East Somerset Council and the Department of Education to open the primary school. The school will have a Church of England ethos and will be open to everyone. It takes its name from the confluence of the rivers Chew and Avon in Keynsham. The Hygge Park residential development will have 250 homes. Curo is also working with Crest Nicholson to build 56 affordable homes on the site, to be known as ‘Woodland View at Hygge Park’. For more information about the new school, visit www.tworiversschool.org.uk

Recruitment bid by care home A RECRUITMENT event for a new £8.5 million care home and reablement centre in Cadbury Heath has taken place. Local charity and care and housing provider Brunelcare hosted the drop-in session at One Church, which is opposite the care home in Earlstone Crescent. The home, called Little Heath, is due to be completed in February 2020 so the event was timed to ensure all staff would be appointed in time. Visitors found out about careers on offer including carers, nurses, maintenance operatives, cleaners and chefs. Little Heath is designed to support the needs of the elderly and people living with dementia. It will provide 64-ensuite bedrooms, dining and servery areas, as well as communal lounges, a hair and beauty salon, function room and shop, plus fitness and gym facilities. Neighbours and police focus on crime

Councillors Duncan Hounsell and Phil Harding with Avon and Somerset Police Neighbourhood Watch Administrator Trevor Wilmot, PCSO Rebecca Knocker and Sergeant Samantha Kayser, alongside Saltford residents RESIDENTS of Saltford had the chance to question police officers and voice their concerns at the annual Neighbourhood Watch meeting. The public meeting at Saltford Hall saw Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and members of the public come together to address the police. They discussed crime rates and crime prevention in the village, and were informed about the increase in shed and garage burglaries. A warning was also given about an

increase in home break-ins taking place while people have been away on short breaks. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH prophecies were so specific ‘ These that the mathematical probability of Chris Williams Senior Pastor at One Church Keynsham

I

love the magic and wonder of Christmas. I have four daughters and seeing them enjoy the magic of Christmas reminds me so much of growing up, when I used to believe. What about the other part of Christmas though? The religious stuff, about Jesus, His birth, a manger, some angels, shepherds and all that other stuff. Do people really still believe in that bible stuff? Let me share a thought. The bible is an incredible collection of ancient books and scrolls discovered over many years. In fact, these scrolls are some of the most accurate records of history that historians have. Some of these records are thousands of years old. In all books written before Jesus was even a twinkle in his mother’s eye, there are more than 300 prophecies (future predictions) about Jesus,

Jesus fulfilling even a handful of them, let alone all of them, is staggeringly improbable - if not impossible.

his birth, his life, his death and resurrection. These prophecies were so specific that the mathematical probability of Jesus fulfilling even a handful of them, let alone all of them, is staggeringly improbable—if not impossible. If we take 1017 ten-pence coins and lay them on the face of Texas, they will cover the whole state two feet deep. If we mark one of these coins and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state, then blindfold a person and tell them that they can travel as far as they wish, but they must pick up one coin and say that this is the right one, what chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing just eight of these prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, providing they wrote them from their own knowledge. How did they get all these

predictions right? They must have been inspired. Despite being against popular belief and culture in the UK today, I still believe in Jesus. I’m holding on to Christmas. I do not believe it is all fantasy and made up mumbo jumbo. The evidence for Jesus being the son of God is remarkable. These prophecies which were all fulfilled in Jesus alone provide compelling evidence, let alone everything else. I share this thought to encourage you to pause for a moment this Christmas. Pause and consider if there could be more to Christmas, more to this message and if so, could that mean there could be more for me in this life and perhaps even more than just this life? More patchworking from Jean Tadman, Valerie Bestin and Jo King

Share your crafts and make friends

Mary Chaplin and Jan Glossop PEOPLE are leaving their homes and putting their hands to good use as Winter Craft Days grow in popularity. Sewing, knitting, felting, crochet, patchwork-quilting and card-making are just a few of the crafts on offer at the all-day events at Compton Dando Parish Hall on Court Hill. The aim of the events is to encourage people to show their creative side. Those who feel isolated or are new to the area are particularly welcomed as the events also bring people together to make new friends. Future Craft Days will be held in January and February. The dates for your diary are Saturday January 18, Tuesday January 28, and Monday February 17. The last event in November saw 25 people either learning new skills or taking along their own projects to work alongside others.

Various crafts makers in Compton Dando village hall enjoying working together Harriette Dottridge, who runs the Craft Days each winter, said: “I’m really into crafts myself. I sew and I knit. Actually I can’t keep my hands still! “I wanted to share that enjoyment with others. I think crafts are really good for people. “You are using something that is naturally available to you. Your hands, and using your hands has a real calming effect. You can enjoy your craft or share your craft with others. “It’s also nice to be in the

company of others. We encourage people to sit and chat while crafting. It’s a very social event.” An important part of the day is lunch as everyone is encouraged to stop what they are doing to enjoy homemade soup and bread together. Tea, coffee and cake is also available. Harriette holds three or four Craft Days each winter and she’s really pleased the events are now drawing record numbers. She said: “I started them when I finished work. It’s great that we

have a village hall and I want to maximise the use of it. “During the colder winter months, some people don’t get out their houses much. So these Craft Days also give people a reason to get out. It’s not always easy braving the cold, but we also usually have cake!” The Winter Craft Days run from 10am to 4pm and the cost is £6, including lunch. n OUT AND ABOUT

with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

Braving the mud along riverbank

A

fter a bit of a mix-up over the start point, some having caught the bus to Saltford and others had driven themselves, a goodly turnout of almost 30 congregated at the Brass Mill for the usual pre-walk talk about risks and conditions. We set off in good walking conditions along the banks of the River Avon towards Bath. Early conditions were indeed very muddy, but these soon changed to firmer ground, which was surprising after the recent heavy rain. The social crowd kept together as we ambled our way to the Boathouse. Here we turned around and walked back along the cycle path. Because it was easy walking, the pace picked up, and the crowd were soon strung out along the path. We were back at the Bird in Hand in just over two hours, where we spent a leisurely hour recovering. We then made our own way back to Keynsham.

Dates for the diary Friday-Sunday December 6-8 - we are joining in the Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church. Pop in and see what a great job our organisers have done. Sunday December 15, 10am - meet at the Memorial Park cafe for our wreath-making walk. A short ramble round the fields of Keynsham collecting flora, then we head back to the Scout hall, where Kevin will be giving us advice on

how to make a wreath. Mince pies and mulled wine to follow. Sunday January 12, 10am - meet at the Fox & Hounds car park to catch the Dial-aRide minibus to Folly Farm. This is liable to a last-minute change due to possible adverse conditions. Tuesday January 14, 6pm - at the Manor House Hotel for the next organisers’ meeting - anyone welcome.

n 1st KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Scouts' auction is massive success

T

he biggest fundraiser of the year for 1st Keynsham Scouts - the auction and book sale - was an astonishing success, raising a record total of £5,200. Hundreds of people attended the event on November 16 at Scout HQ, with the place bustling from 9am until 6pm. The highest bid secured an antique spinning wheel (complete with bobbin), with one of the most unique items being a giant display watering can. Sue White, the auction organiser, said: “Thank you so much to everybody who helped make this such a huge success. We have been able to recycle items, raised significant funds for Scouting in Keynsham, supported other charities and had lots of fun. We will now rest and look forward to next year’s auction on November 14.” Thank you also to Bath Recycling Skips for kindly donating their skip to help clear up. n Another exciting announcement is the return of Avon Scout Troop on Monday nights. The troop ran in the 1980s but will be making a comeback in February 2020. Even more places will be available for 10–14 year olds, making 1st Keynsham one of the largest groups in the country. This means that the leader team needs to be built up to help support the new troop. The core team is ready to go but a few more volunteers would be greatly appreciated. You may already be a part of Scouts but prefer Mondays, or know someone who would be great at sharing their skills. If

you’re interested, please email agslscouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org n The Scouts also took part in the annual Remembrance Parade in uniform, and it was fantastic to see a very high turnout from all sections, who saw out the occasion with dignity and respect. It was lovely to see such a large turnout of Keynsham residents watching the parade, and many applauded and offered their praise of our young people and their behaviour. We are very proud of them all! n Did you know? The Scout section troops are all named after rivers, with Axe, Chew, Frome and soon Avon. n Want to get involved in one of the largest Scout groups in the country? We’re always looking for volunteers and whatever your age or experience, we all have something to offer that can help equip young people with #SkillsForLife. Frank takes charge of St Peter's Hospice charity A FORMER army bomb squad commando has taken over the reins of one of Bristol’s most loved charities. Brigadier Frank Noble, 56, has replaced Simon Caraffi as chief executive officer at St Peter’s Hospice, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. The charity has just undergone one of its biggest projects in recent years to raise £6.5 million to build a new inpatient unit at its site in Brentry. A huge fundraising effort from the people of Bristol raised a substantial sum towards the cost of the new unit, which took patients for the first time last November. “There’s a real business to run here,” said Frank. “We have 51 shops and need to raise 80 per cent of our funding every year. Our need is never going to go away. The services our volunteers provide and the hours they put in save us £2.1 million a year.”

Frank joined the forces as a Royal Engineer in 1985 where he trained to be a commando, serving in a range of units including the commando engineer squadron and commando bomb disposal unit, including support to the UK Special Forces. He was the engineer commanding officer in Northern Ireland when former British Prime Minister Tony Blair signed the peace accords. Frank also led the commando bomb disposal unit during the First Gulf War conflict, supporting the world famous Desert Rats. After leaving the army in 2015 Frank became operations director at Clifton College. He later worked with the former headmaster of the college’s preparatory school John Milne, helping him to develop an educational consultancy business.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

End of the line for part of rail history Keynsham Abbey Our meeting last month featured a most interesting talk from architectural historian and broadcaster Jonathan Foyle. It was entitled “Keynsham Abbey - its dedication and why it matters”. The dedication of a church refers to the saint or saints in whose name it is consecrated; Keynsham Abbey was dedicated to Mary and Saints Peter and Paul. Jonathan explained the development and meanings of the symbols used in the carvings and paintings that decorate churches and other religious buildings. He gave an insight into a visual language that was well-understood when our Abbey was built, from about 1170 to 1220, but is now lost to all except a few specialists. Last Train to Swindon History is made all the time in small ways. On December 15, Great Western Railway is introducing a new timetable. As a result, Friday December 13 will see the last direct train from Keynsham to Swindon. Such trains have been a feature of the route, almost without a break, since the original Great Western Railway from Bristol to London opened on June 30, 1841. Swindon was the headquarters of the railway company and it remained an important engineering and administrative centre for the railway through British Rail days. So it made sense to operate through trains to it

from many places on the network. Stopping trains from Swindon to Bristol were also used for many years for “running in” new and overhauled locomotives fresh from the Swindon works; this brought a great variety of locomotives to the service. Dr Harrison and his House Dr Claude Harrison was one Keynsham’s best-known and bestloved residents. Descended from a family of doctors including his own father, the redoubtable Dr Charles, he was a keen sportsman and his uncle, by marriage, was the famous cricketer, Dr WG Grace. After returning from military service in 1920, he lost no time in helping to re-form the Keynsham Town Cricket Club and was recognised as a talented player. Over the years he fulfilled many roles for the club as captain, secretary, chairman and president and most importantly as a trustee when the club took on a mortgage to purchase the new ground in 1930. In his professional life he joined his father in 1923 at his surgery in Tregare House, 44 High Street. This building was demolished in 1959 and is now the site of the Post Office; the small building to the left in the photograph was the waiting room. From there he ministered to the needs of local people for the rest of his life. Patients remember there being an open fire in the surgery with a cat curled up in front of it – a far cry

Above, the 8.15pm from Bristol to Swindon at Keynsham on June 26, 1958 Left, Tregare House, 44 High Street, was the home of Dr Claude Harrison

from today’s clinical surgeries! In the days before the NHS, doctors’ visits and treatments had to be paid for but many a family had cause to be grateful to ‘Dr Claude’ as he continued his father’s tradition of not charging those in genuine hardship. Cleveland Pools in Bath The society’s next meeting, on Monday December 9, features a talk on the “History of the Cleveland Pools” in Bath.

Sally Helvey will be describing England’s oldest lido and the plans to restore the Georgian pool to its former glory. The meeting is at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, Keynsham, and starts at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, with admission free if you join the society. We will always A HUGE crowd came together on Remembrance Sunday to pay their respects to the fallen of past conflicts. Hundreds of people of every age lined the streets of Keynsham on Sunday November 10 to honour the service of the Armed Forces community and the ultimate sacrifice they made for their country. Service men and women marched along the High Street and down Bath Hill to the Memorial Park Gates for the annual wreath-laying service. They were joined by members of the emergency services and younger members of the community from the Scouts, Cubs, Guides and Brownies. Reverend Stephen M’Caw, the Keynsham Parish Team Rector, opened the commemorations to remember all those involved in the two world wars and later conflicts. The crowd, which included councillors and community leaders, stood with heads bowed at 11am as a two-minutes’ silence was marked, then watched as wreaths were laid on both sides of the Memorial Gates. The Service of Remembrance was organised by the Keynsham branch of the Royal British Legion.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Why this should be a climate election

A

recent poll revealed that almost twothirds of people think politicians are not discussing climate change enough, and over half said climate change will influence the way they vote in the election. Seven in 10 people said the climate emergency demands more swift action. Charities and business representatives like the UK Health Alliance, the WI and the CBI are also calling for clear and urgent action on climate change from the next government. The CBI’s head said in a recent speech that “to tackle the climate emergency in the time we have, we need to go faster and further than ever before.” The reasons for making this a climate election are clear. With only 10 years left to make the changes that will keep temperatures to a

1.5C rise, key decisions must be made by the next government that will determine whether we succeed or fail. Important environmental issues up for government approval in 2020 include airport expansion, North Sea oil licenses and roadbuilding programmes. A ten-year investment strategy in the green economy is also needed to meet our target to become net zero carbon. As we leave the EU, the UK must shape its own environment bill to determine environmental regulations on everything from cleaning up polluted air and reducing single-use plastic, to restoring the natural world for wildlife. Ministers will also have to decide how to replace the Common Agricultural Policy and Common

Fisheries Policy. These will have a huge impact on our countryside and seas. These are just some of the ways the UK can take positive actions that tackle climate change and enhance the environment we live in, clean up our land and seas, and bring jobs and investment into our economy. As hosts of the UN’s climate change conference in 2020 we can also lead by example and bring nations together to tackle the issue collectively. We have an opportunity to quiz Keynsham’s MP hopefuls at a Climate Hustings on December 6 at 7pm at The Space. There will be a chance to find out about all the parties’ pledges on climate change and ask: are they going far enough, fast enough? Liz Barling

Generations share their love of music PEOPLE with dementia have an early Christmas present to look forward to as school children have been invited to join them for some festive fun. Children from St John’s Primary School will be attending a ‘Music for the Mind’ session on December 12 at St Dunstan’s Church hall in Keynsham. The youngsters will be helping to encourage those living with dementia and their carers to listen to music and maybe even join in with a sing-along. The annual event to bring the two generations together is organised by the Keynsham and Saltford Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). Chairman Alan Hale said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people from the school to support the wider community. Everyone gets so much out of this festive event.” The DAA, which was established in October 2016 and is registered with the Alzheimer’s Society, aims to make Keynsham and Saltford dementia friendly. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non Fiction

The Hairy Bikers’ 12 Days of Christmas Dave Myers & Si King Join Si and Dave on a gastronomic guide to the 12 days of Christmas with excellent fool-proof versions of Christmas classics in this scrummy cookbook. With colourful illustrations and clear guidelines, Si and Dave also take on dishes with a new and inventive twist – such as goose risotto, and chocolate and chestnut roulade. They describe what to cook on the big day itself but also cover Christmas Eve, delicious cocktails, fancy nibbles and ideas for the leftovers. They even show you how to make your own Christmas crackers - and help keep the kids distracted. This is the perfect companion to your festive celebrations.

Effie: the passionate lives of Effie Gray, John Ruskin and John Everett Millais Suzanne Fagence Cooper as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant Suzanne Cooper had access to all the correspondence from the Gray family that has been passed down through their descendants. This allowed a really welldocumented biography of Effie Gray and an account of the life of a woman in Victorian times. Effie, having been raised in

Scotland in a loving family, married John Ruskin, the renowned art critic who championed the rise of the PreRaphaelites and gave Effie a taste for travelling in Europe. But after the marriage remained unconsummated, she managed to get a divorce (one of the three cases of divorce granted to a woman at this time) and remarry with John Everett Millais, the most popular painter of his time. This marriage placed Effie in the midst of London high society, and this book gives us an idea of the artists’ circle, the chance to hear first-hand accounts of the Universal Exhibitions, and to see the rise of Scotland as a holiday destination to get some fresh air. I really enjoyed it and found it well written by someone who wants to stay faithful and as close as possible to the Gray family. Adult Fiction

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Swimmers who attend Saltford Primary School held a cake sale to raise money towards the new blocks at Keynsham pool

'Volunteers are the salt of the earth' FOLLOWING the generous community donations, Keynsham ASC remembers its humble beginnings ahead of returning to Keynsham Leisure Centre early in the New Year. The late Jean Findlay, Life President of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club, wrote an article to celebrate the club’s 50th year of being a Somerset ASA member in back 2001. In the article, Jean revealed the origins of KASC: “Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club has come a long way in a short time as a competitive club, but no one really knows when it started. We know it was closed down for the duration of the 2nd world war in 1939 and was restarted by Babs Rayner, Doc Morgan and Joan Vincent in the 1940s. “Babs’ daughter, Anne (Boulton) came to help when she finished her days as a P.E. teacher, and I joined in on poolside in 1961, as green as grass, but with lots of Royal Life Saving Society awards! The green pea soup warm water of Bath’s Beau Street Pool presented a few problems, as swimmers who dived into the water disappeared from view, and a fog hung over the pool in cold weather.” The club at this period was a lovely village affair, which taught all-comers to swim. Anyone who came paid sixpence into a little wooden bowl, and got an hour’s teaching at all levels. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Keynsham got their own pool in the then brand new leisure centre. “Our dreams of our own pool looked like becoming true, and we went out and about to gain experience at any Somerset Sunday course we could find. We trained parents to help, and bashed everybody in sight through the old Club Instructor’s Certificate.

The late Jean Findlay, Life President

“We then turned our attention to the expansion of KASC, ready for our new six-lane, 25m pool, and got ourselves into tracksuits instead of gardening garb. We accordingly borrowed Chandag School from kind Headmaster, Harold Osgathorp, put a few adverts up, and sat back to await the great day. “That was the point where we should have bolted, but we roared at the throng that we would take the first 200 at £5 per swimmer and the modern club was born.” Jean had a true passion in KASC, and her words still ring true today. As she said in her article back in 2001, “All clubs are living entities, made up of the people running them and competing for them”. Many of our Somerset clubs are still directly staffed by volunteers, and Jean was always keen to encourage local people to get involved with the club, saying, “Volunteers are the salt of the earth. We salute all those who went before, and those who will follow in keeping up a great sporting tradition.” Jean knew that KASC was special and said, “Some of our swimmers have done really, really well and I think it’s only a matter of time before we will all be cheering a KASC swimmer on the TV!” And she was thrilled to be able to do just that when Siobhan-Marie

O’Connor swam at the Olympics in London 2012 and Rio 2016. Jean’s three sons, Steve, Nick and John, who attended Wellsway School, were members and competed for KASC at national level. Jean continued to coach alongside both Thea Beament and Lynne Bartlett, and serve on the management committee until her retirement and appointment as Keynsham’s Life President. Sadly, Jean passed away earlier in 2019, but ‘The Village Club’ will be a permanent record of the evolution of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club. You can read the full article by visiting www.keynshamswimmingclub.co.uk and clicking on the news tab at the top. n Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club would like to thank every supporter who has donated towards the new blocks through their crowdfunding campaign. At the time of writing, Keynsham were just £140 short of their target of £1,500. If you or your business would like to support Keynsham Swimming Club and donate some money, you can do so by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/kasc On Friday November 8, some of the younger swimmers, Anselm, Ella, Fergus, Isaac and Daniel, who attend Saltford Primary School, held a cake sale and raised an additional £200 towards the blocks. n The club are looking forward to getting back to their home pool and will be holding trials in the New Year. If your child is a keen swimmer aged seven years or over and is interested in joining a swimming club, please contact thea.beament@keynshamswimming. club to reserve their place on Keynsham’s New Year trials.

Club gives £800 to Dementia Alliance

WHILST we are in a period of non-activity on the bowling green, a lot is happening behind the scenes at Keynsham Bowls Club. At the start of each season the ladies and gents nominate a charity for the club to support and this year it was the Keynsham and Saltford Dementia Action Alliance. The local group provides support to sufferers and their carers and is working on making our two towns as dementiafriendly as possible. Our photograph shows the captains, Mo Dickinson and Carm Riccio, presenting a cheque for £800 to the local treasurer and secretary, Mike and Merrial Knight, at the club’s monthly coffee morning. Later in the month the annual presentation lunch took place at Knowle Golf Club, when 90

members sat down to a superb meal. Trophies were presented to the winners of the various competitions which had taken place both on Finals Day and throughout the season. The accolade of the “most successful lady competitor” went to one of our relatively new members, Sally Difazio, who was involved in three single finals, winning two, plus being a member of the winning team in a triples competition. The equivalent men’s title went to Peter Iles, who bagged three wins and runners-up spot, just managing to overshadow his wife Jan’s haul of one win and three runners-up. Four of our ladies - Marlene Tidey, Lesley Portch, Pam Edge and Sue Mounty - whilst playing for their team Route 66 in the indoor league at the Bristol Bowling Centre, achieved a

The club’s annual general meeting took place in the Clubhouse, when about 80 members attended to hear the various reports and to fill the positions for the following year. Following a vote, John Nix, a long-standing member, was elected the club’s new president, with Margaret Church as vicepresident.

The principal officers were all re-elected - Barrie Davies as chairman, David Hockney as secretary and Roger Price as treasurer. Other positions, too numerous to mention but essential in maintaining the life of a thriving bowling club, were also filled. On the playing side, Carm Riccio continued as the men’s captain whilst Ann Newbery took over the role of ladies’ captain from Mo Dickinson, and the captain’s positions of the various league teams were also filled.

n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

The better team loses as Keynsham RFC THREE league games played, three losses, just two losing bonus points banked – that’s the sad news in this report. Firstly, there was an away game at Chew Valley RFC. It was a travesty of a result as the better team by far on the day ran out losers by 10 points to 16. It was played on a surprisingly good surface, given the recent heavy rain. The greasy surface and almost ceaseless heavy drizzle combined to ensure that it was never going to be a festival of flowing rugby, but what followed was disappointing- a very stopstart game with too much whistle and messy set-pieces. Keynsham’s pack was thoroughly on top throughout the game except for two very effective driving mauls from the home side (one of which led to their only try of the game) and one scrum which powered Keynsham backwards; how that scrum came about is a mystery in the context of the preceding and subsequent events. The match started with Keynsham’s pack gaining fully 40 metres from two successive driving mauls but this attack was snuffed out. Two penalties within the space of four minutes, both of which had seen the Black and Ambers march an extra 10 metres, saw the home side take a six-point lead. On 15 minutes Keynsham were down to 14 men for 10 minutes when Jack Weston was mysteriously yellow-carded. Despite being a man light, they still managed the occasional threat to the home line. With 30 minutes on the clock

Keynsham's defeat at the hands of Chew Valley was a travesty of a result Tim Coghlan was forced to retire and Darren Uren took over at prop. Chew Valley cleared their line via a penalty towards the end of the half but Matt Clifton stole their throw-in. A cross-kick from Ollie Coneybeare was caught by winger Matt Carr and he touched down for a try. Sam Challenger converted in fine fashion from wide out to give them a deserved half-time lead of one point. Within three minutes of the second half, this lead was extended to four points from a Challenger penalty; this followed a burst by Weston through the heart of the home defence to force the field position. This was cancelled out three

minutes later by a third successful kick from the home side. It was all Keynsham and the home side were only kept in the game by superb defensive kicking, both from in-play and penalties. Then came the moment of ecstasy for the home supporters. A powerful catch and drive from a line-out saw the pack force their way through the previously impenetrable K defence for a try by the posts, duly converted, to make it 16-10. Keynsham came back to camp on the Chew Valley line for the last five or six minutes. There was reset scrum after scrum after scrum on the five-metre line. No penalty was forthcoming until it

was the home side that got the penalty reward. Kick to touch, line-out, back into touch, game lost, one losing bonus point. The next game was a Bath Combination Cup game, under lights, on the Friday night, when Frome RFC were the visitors. On a foul night the local boys ran out convincing 48-10 winners. Despite the weather, they contrived some super backs play and were rewarded with five fine second-half tries. The Cleve RFC game was switched to an away fixture, and the Black and Ambers stumbled to another loss, 19-13. They failed to take their opportunities in the first half and paid the penalty with the end result. They allowed

start a bleak streak

themselves to be bullied by a team that on the day wanted victory more – these things happen. The final game in this report was another away loss, this time to Crediton RFC and without the losing bonus point. The lads travelled to North Devon and found the ground in great condition, and the game was played in splendid weather sunshine and very little breeze. Both sides showed every willingness to produce open, flowing rugby and the pace seldom dropped, ensuring that the large crowd were entertained throughout. That said, the quality of the game did not match the intentions. Both sides were guilty of over-elaboration and failure to retain possession and, consequently, neither team were able to build any pressure on the other. Ten minutes into the game, two successive off-side penalties gave Ollie Conybeare a chance of a pop at goal, which he gratefully accepted to take the lead. But by this stage, the Keynsham scrum was already showing signs of creaking and the seeds had been sown for what was to be a torrid afternoon’s set-pieces. Dan Moody retired with a blood injury on the 30-minute mark and was substituted by

Josh Clayfield. By the time he returned at the start of the second half, Crediton had edged three points clear courtesy of two fine penalties from their No 10. Keynsham started the second half looking like a totally re-galvanised side and were soon within striking distance of the line. However, a driving maul was turned over and play returned far upfield. With 10 minutes gone, Cieran Chester intercepted on his own 10-metre line and shot off. He was clobbered by the cover tackler but, three phases later, right wing Marlon Dropsy scored in the corner to edge Keynsham in front; Conybeare’s conversion missed. Shortly thereafter Jake Warren and Kieran Etheridge replaced Ash Linton and Sam Crabbe. Crediton regained the lead through a super try from their scrum-half, unconverted, and minutes later a well-hit penalty from Conybeare hit the upright and bounced back. This proved to be their last chance and, to add to their woes, they failed to hang on to a losing bonus point thanks to a drop goal and penalty from their stand-off half. Final score 17-8. There’s only one home game for the first XV in December and that’s against Thornbury on the 14th.

n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Town leak goals but progress in the cup NOVEMBER proved a difficult time for Keynsham Town as their defence conceded 16 goals in five matches, but the team has progressed to the second round of the Les Phillips (League) Cup. The month started badly with a 6-2 home defeat at the AJN Stadium to Westbury United. After a fairly even first half, Westbury scored five times in the second to leave the home fans stunned. A chance to make amends followed just four days later when the Ks travelled to Bishops Lydeard in the Les Phillips Cup and they came away with a confidence-building 4-0 victory to set up a second-round tie away to Roman Glass St George. The following Saturday a return trip in the league, to Clevedon Town, following Ks’ narrow Somerset Cup victory in October, brought a thrilling match. Keynsham Town trailed 3-0 at one time, recovered to 3-3, only to be defeated by a last-minute goal. Back home, the visit of Cribbs brought another big defeat. Despite going 2-0 up in eight minutes, Keynsham were 4-2 down by half time and eventually lost 5-2. Changes were made for the next match, the second round of the Somerset Premier Cup at home to Bridgwater Town. This time the visitors, flying high in the league, were made to work hard for their victory, which came via a solitary first-half goal. November’s schedule published in the last edition of the Keynsham Voice was disrupted by a floodlight failure, but with that now fixed, matches should go ahead as planned. However, please visit toolstationleague.com to check before travelling. The next home match will be a return visit of Bridgwater Town for a league match on December 7, where another close encounter can be anticipated. This is quickly followed the following Tuesday by a visit from local rivals Cadbury Heath. That is last home fixture for 2019 but the Ks will be playing just a mile from their base on Boxing Day against Brislington at Ironmould Lane, kick off 1 pm.
