Complaints Despite our best efforts, we sometimes get things wrong. We always try to resolve issues informally at first but we also have a formal complaints procedure. If you have a complaint about anything in Keynshamvoice, contact the publisher using the details below. We aspire to follow the Code of Conduct of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), which holds journalists to a high standard of behaviour.

Covid-19 cases at Wellsway School WELLSWAY School in Keynsham has confirmed a small number of Covid-19 cases in students and staff. Following advice from Public Health England and Bath & North East Somerset Council, the school has identified all known school contacts and informed them that they must self-isolate for 14 days. Wellsway is following the national guidance for schools, including providing staff and pupils with advice on social distancing and hygiene to limit spread. The affected students and year groups are now isolating and have been set work to complete remotely. Term resumes for students on Tuesday November 3. Those self-isolating will have completed their isolation periods before term begins and will therefore return to school on that date. The school will undergo additional deep cleaning. Headteacher Matthew Woodville said: “We are supporting all those affected and are continuing to review all our processes to make our school

as safe as possible for staff and pupils. Our priority, as always, is the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider school community. We continue to be appreciative of their ongoing support.” Dr Bruce Laurence, Director for Public Health at Bath & North East Somerset Council, added: “We are working with the school to manage the situation for the pupils, staff and wider community. “We collectively must take all the right steps to break the chain of transmission to slow down the spread of Covid-19. Of course, one of the most important reasons to limit any increase in cases is so that we can keep our children in school as much as possible and avoid further disruption to their education. “We all need to remember to follow all the rules, including on social distancing, hand-washing, face coverings and gatherings. “If we have symptoms, selfisolate and book a test on 119 or online at nhs.uk/coronavirus and follow instructions from Test and Trace.”

Bid to make rail station step-free KEYNSHAM is among a number of railways stations that may be made step-free to improve access for disabled passengers. The West of England Combined Authority (Weca) is spending £100,000 to come up with detailed plans of what is needed at 27 stations. A report said: “Improved passenger facilities and levels of accessibility at railway stations, and making them step-free to enable all passengers to travel by train, is an objective within the Joint Local Transport Plan.”

Further details of the complaints process can be found on the Voice website, or can be obtained by contacting the Publisher. DHP, HPD, MNCH(REG), AfSFH

High Street traffic closure hours cut REDUCED hours have come into force for the temporary closure of Keynsham High Street, introduced in July to provide more space for social distancing. Following discussions with residents and businesses, Bath & North East Somerset Council has relaxed the traffic ban to operate from 10am to 4pm each day instead of 9am to 5pm. The change, introduced on October 23, is designed to allow greater opportunities for vulnerable people to access shops and services and give businesses more time to access their premises. All other restrictions will remain the same. Councillor Joanna Wright, joint cabinet member for transport services, said: “Creating enough space for social distancing is paramount to everyone’s health, but it’s clear from listening to everyone’s views that changing the timings of the road closure will help

vulnerable people access the services they need. “Reducing the hours will provide more opportunities for disabled people to get to the shops. “It will also mean businesses have more time to load and unload goods. “Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to talk to us

about the closure and I hope the reduced timings will help people who have been experiencing difficulties. “These measures allow people to maintain social distancing, so please remember to follow the rules and keep yourself and others safe.” The temporary closure was introduced on July 13 under

emergency measures due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, the council has monitored the measures and engaged with residents, businesses, users of the High Street and local councillors. Full details of the access restrictions can be found at www.bathnes.gov.uk/ bathsocialdistancing

Recycling centre set for expansion

PROPOSALS are taking shape to move facilities from Bath’s recycling centre to Pixash Lane in Keynsham. Under the scheme, the Keynsham site would expand and be redeveloped to meet growing demand. Bath and North East Somerset Council is in early talks about the proposals to move operations from Midland Road, Bath. Its facilities – along with the vehicle depot at Ashmead Road in Keynsham and the public MOT garage in Locksbrook Road in Bath – could be consolidated onto a single site in Pixash Lane, which is already home to the town’s recycling centre but would expand to four hectares. The facility could be in place by the end of 2022, allowing the space at Midland Road to be released for 176 new flats. Before the council submits formal proposals, it has requested a scoping report to see

The recycling centre at Pixash Lane in Keynsham what needs to be included in the application. Documents submitted with the request say the Midland Road site is extremely compact and demand is growing, with traffic queuing onto the main road. The request says: “The council operates collection services for household refuse and

recycling from all its households (nearly 84,000) and has a duty of care for the transfer and disposal of household waste. “To carry that out the service efficiently, safely and to a consistently high standard, the council needs operational depots that are well-designed and maintained to accommodate the necessary infrastructure.”

As well as the issues at Midland Road, it says traffic regularly queues down Pixash Lane to reach Keynsham’s recycling centre and its compact nature does not allow for a quick turnaround. The creation of a purposebuilt facility would meet demand for the next 40 years. A council spokesperson said: “The decision to progress the relocation of the waste, recycling and transfer station operations from Midland Road was made in January 2019. “Plans to relocate the operational services to Pixash Lane have also been developed over many years. “Submitting an environmental impact assessment scoping report for consideration by the council’s planning department and external consultees is the first stage of the EIA process, prior to a detailed report going before the planning committee.”

How to keep your pets Relief and rage as safe on Bonfire Night

E

very year fireworks can cause fear to all of our beloved pets, some more than others. Here are some top tips to make firework celebrations less frightening. n A few weeks leading up to firework night, play sound recordings of fireworks quietly and monitor your cat or dog for their response. If they seem unaffected, reward them with a treat and turn the volume up slowly. If they seem unsettled then decrease the volume and proceed again at a slower place. n Synthetic pheromones for both dogs and cats are available in plugsin and sprays. Also, non-pheromone tablets can help your pets feel more relaxed during stressful events. All these products can be purchased from your local veterinary practice. n Build your cat or dog a den or somewhere to hide in your home. Cats like to be up high, so make a space on a shelve for them. Dogs like to be covered, so place a blanket propped over their bed. n Cats can become really stressed if outside whilst fireworks are going off, so lock them indoors early on Bonfire Night. It is also good to have your cat microchipped in case they get startled, escape and get lost. n Walk dogs early before tea time to avoid times when fireworks are being set off. n Close all windows and shut curtains to try to make the sound of the fireworks less noisy. n Put on a TV or music at a slightly higher volume than normal to help drown out noise. n Don't forget about the small pets living outside. Bring rabbits and guinea pigs into the house or outbuildings. Also ensure they have extra bedding to burrow in to help them feel safe. n Cover outdoor aviaries with heavy blankets to help muffle the Jolene noise and block out the bright Mursell, lights from fireworks. RVN For any further information you may need to prepare yourself and Park Road your pet for Bonfire Night, please Vets, Keynsham contact the staff at Park Road Vets. We are here to help.

CONTROVERSIAL moorings on the River Avon at Saltford are set to be removed by the end of 2022. The site in Mead Lane has long been the source of a dispute between boaters and residents. The decision follows a survey to assess “the suitability of this land for moorings following concerns raised by the community relating to the extensive repairs/construction of the Mead Lane highway and riverbank during 2005.” Live-aboard boaters say they are angry that members of Bath and North East Somerset Council decided to have the moorings removed despite no evidence they are damaging the riverbank. They say the facilities are irreplaceable and vital for their access to healthcare and education. But residents branded the authority “negligent” for allowing mooring in Mead Lane and said it was “imperative” they were taken away. The 48-hour moorings were due to be removed from the start of this month and the 14-day moorings will be relocated by a target date of December 31, 2022. Boater Rebecca Sarll threatened legal action against the council if it pressed ahead with the plans without considering the impact on boaters. She told cabinet members: “The council has spent tens of thousands of pounds on reports and surveys and reviews that all say the moorings should remain. It is only the residents’ view that

is affected by these decisions – for hundreds of boaters, it is the safety and security of our homes.” Although a survey by Atkins in September found “no indication that mooring is adversely affecting bank stability”, Ms Sarll said the council was ignoring the findings and instead taking residents’ claims “at face value with zero data to back them up”. She added: “The council has to understand the lives of those that their decision will affect, as removing the moorings will lead to legal action.” Around a third of the moorings in Mead Lane are for stays of up to 48 hours and are favoured by leisure boaters, with the other two-week moorings used by live-aboard boaters, who need to keep moving throughout the year under their licence conditions. Council officers have recommended removing the 14day moorings at Mead Lane once suitable alternative locations can be found. But Ross Fender said the Atkins report “can’t be any clearer” in recommending that the existing moorings should be improved. The report said Mead Lane was “possibly the only place on the river where mooring for 14 days is practical and legitimate.” Mr Fender said: “It would be crazy to spend vast amounts of money again investigating [alternative mooring sites] when the homework has already been done. Mead Lane is safe, it’s proven, it’s been tested." The proposals to remove the

riverside moorings set to be removed

Rebecca Sarll is threatening legal action against the council over its decsiion to remove the moorings Mead Lane moorings followed years of escalating tensions. Residents accused boaters of criminal activity, staying longer than they were allowed, running their engines for extended periods, damaging the riverbank and littering. Boaters said they had been harassed by residents monitoring their movements and discriminated against – issues they said they do not face

elsewhere on the waterway. Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Elisabeth Evans said all residents had ever tried to do was “protect this area for the greater community to enjoy”. She said terminating the moorings was “imperative” and called for a “swift solution”. The recommendations to cabinet had proposed a “longterm aspiration” to remove the moorings.

Got News? Call Keynsham Voice on 0117 9082121

Councillor Paul Crossley, the cabinet member for community services, proposed a target date of December 31, 2022, for removing the moorings, adding: “Some will say it’s prolonging the agony, but this can’t be done quickly.” The council budgeted £35,000 this year for “Mead Lane activity” and a £25,000 recurring sum from 2021/22. Councillor Croslley also

proposed charging boaters for mooring at Mead Lane from March 1 next year so the council has money to invest in new moorings in alternative locations. He said the cabinet’s vote was the start of the process and offered to meet with boaters – something he admitted he had not yet done. Mooring in Mead Lane is being banned between November and the end of February. The council will work with the Canal and River Trust to jointly fund a river warden to lead on enforcement, and work with the police to review the parking restrictions in Mead Lane. The cabinet unanimously agreed the recommendations. Future decisions on the moorings will be delegated to Councillor Crossley, in consultation with the council’s director of environment. Climate campaigners confront MP

CLIMATE campaigners have staged a demonstration to try to enlist the support of MP Jacob Rees-Mogg. Members of Extinction Rebellion held a silent wake for the ‘dying planet’ outside the Conservative member’s constituency surgery in Saltford. At the surgery, Mr Rees-Mogg met Rich Prior, a local resident and Extinction Rebellion and Christian Climate Action activist, who has been trying to persuade the MP to support the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. The Private Member’s Bill, drafted by scientists, academics and lawyers, has been introduced in Parliament by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas. A second reading and debate is due to take place in March next year. The Bill aims to address the entire UK carbon footprint, including all emissions caused by the UK internationally, conserve and restore nature in the UK, and create a Citizens’ Assembly with the aim of giving people more say in decision-making. But Mr Prior left his meeting frustrated that the Tory MP refused to give the Bill his backing. Mr Prior said: “He was very respectful and listened to the issues. But it just feels that

Jacob Rees-Mogg arriving at his constituency surgery in Saltford he has nothing to say on the most important subject, which is the climate emergency. “He seems to think the government is doing enough, which is blatantly not the case. He’s proposing dredging rivers on the Somerset Levels as a solution when we’re facing two-metre sea level rises. Cardiff will be flooded.” Mr Prior said that recent examples of extreme weather inevitably brought to mind the devastating 1968 Keynsham flood, in which seven people died.

“Because of global warming, more water is retained in the atmosphere. When it rains, it rains harder. If we had that amount of rainfall again in the Chew Valley, with the addition of climate change, that could be pretty serious.” At his meeting with the MP, Mr Prior also highlighted the effect of extreme weather on farming, with the UK’s wheat yield down 37% per cent on last year. Mr Rees-Mogg was not available for comment before the Voice went to press.

ON THE BEAT

Stick to the rules: don't loiter after 10pm

C

ovid and its spread have got us all on the back foot this year. But with government rules having been unclear, the new three-stage system should be easier to follow. On the whole, we have been lucky in respect of the number of cases we have had compared to other parts of the country. I totally understand how the uncertainty we face is beginning to frustrate people, but the rules are set out in attempt to slow and stop the spread of this virus. How has this been affecting the local police team? We have had to respond to hundreds of calls about Covid breaches, which in turn puts a huge drain on our resources. What can you do to help? It’s easy - stick to the rules and don’t get drawn into breaking them. For example, when pubs and restaurants close at 10pm, please move off quickly without loitering. A large number of our calls come from complaints of people gathering once they have left venues. This in turn can spark

with PC James Evans anti-social behaviour. If we can all change our behaviours a little, it will make a big difference and we can help the people who really need us. n Autumn is when our crime trends change. With the earlier sunset, we are beginning to see a rise in shed and outbuilding break-ins and criminal damage. So it’s the right time of year to check your security measures. There are thousands of home security measures on the market, from doorbells that you can watch and reply to from your phone, to widow locks and ground anchors.

I suggest you spend between 10-20% of something’s value on the security that protects it. If I ride my £500 bike to the shops, is it proportionate to secure it with a £5 lock? It’s the same with your shed. If you have £1,000 of tools in there, is the £10 clasp and padlock a reasonable security measure? I’d suggest not. I’d suggest doing the basics. Fix that light that the bulb went in last summer. Add additional security measures if needed - lock side gates and block easy access points. Close and secure windows, and do not leave keys in doors or windows or on display. If you have cause to keep a reasonable amount of jewellery, cash or other valuables, then invest in a small safe. But make sure to hide it and secure it to a fixed point. If you need any advice, contact your local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) who can arrange to get your house checked by our experts. n There are number of scams doing the rounds. Firstly, there are email scams where you get an

official-looking demand for some sort of outstanding bill or fine. The scammers invite you to settle this by completing your bank details and then help themselves to some of your money. A similar trick is carried out on the phone, where someone will try to convince you to settle an outstanding bill or fine. If you are not expecting correspondence from a company, question the caller. You can check phone numbers or company references online. And do not give out any security information unless you are 100% sure you need to. n It's also the time of year to give your cars a check - from lights, tyres and fluid levels to your documents. Check your MOT, insurance and tax. We are empowered to seize any vehicles being used without a valid insurance policy or current vehicle excise licence (tax). Please keep your vehicles in a serviceable condition. Although your MOT is only due once a year, your vehicle should be in a condition to pass it every day.

THIS is an interesting photograph of Fry’s Somerdale factory. Construction was in several phases, with A Block in the centre of the picture and the Power House completed first, so that limited production started in 1925. On the left is B Block, approaching completion. This was in use by the end of 1928, so the picture was probably taken early in that year. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY There is always more local history to be discovered. One of the society’s members, Andy Williams, has recently carried out detailed research into our Saxon past. This is his account of what he found.

Buried here - the warrior Today’s Sherborne Abbey stands on the site of the Saxon Cathedral which existed from 705 to 1075. Photo courtesy of Peter Broster / Wikimedia Creative Commons

W

hat connects Keynsham with a king, a bishop, a saint, the Vikings and an abbey? The answer is Bishop Heahmund (pronounced Heckmund), the Bishop of Sherborne from 867 to 871. I first became aware of Bishop Heahmund through watching the Amazon Prime TV series The Vikings. During series four, Bishop Heahmund makes his first appearance. His larger-than-life character, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, portrays the bishop as a famous warrior and religious advisor to King Aethelred of Wessex. In the series, he is feared by the Vikings because of his skills as a warrior. He goes on to have numerous affairs (contrary to his religious status) and is eventually kidnapped by the Vikings because of his fighting skills, before returning to fight the Vikings alongside King Aethelred. As an amateur researcher, I looked initially on the internet for information about Bishop Heahmund and couldn’t believe what I found. He actually existed. He died on 22 March 871 fighting the Vikings alongside King Aethelred and his brother, the future King Alfred the Great. He was ‘killed by the sword’ during the battle of

Merton (believed to be Mardon near Devizes), he was declared a saint in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and his body lies buried in Keynsham – yes, Keynsham! I was amazed that someone with such a reputation was buried in our town. And it was hard to understand why someone with such a history was not celebrated, or his burial site marked. I set about trying to corroborate this internet information. Specifically, I wanted to know where Bishop Heahmund was most likely to have been buried. As a result, I came across the work of Keynsham & Saltford Local History

Society and the archaeological work of the late Barbara Lowe. Thanks to her recording of work during the excavation of the Keynsham bypass and later, I was able to conclude that, on the balance of probabilities, the most likely location for the bishop’s burial is in Keynsham Memorial Park, near the surviving remains of Keynsham Abbey. The evidence is compelling. In 871, Keynsham was believed to be a location of significant religious importance. At the time, it had an important Anglo-Saxon minster with a large burial site and it was within

bishop who took on the Vikings the diocese of Sherborne. Keynsham was also nearer the battleground than the bishop’s church in Sherborne. Other documentary evidence shows that Keynsham was chosen in 1166 by William, 2nd Earl of Gloucester, for the huge abbey complex. From the excavation and archaeological finds recovered from under the abbey foundations, I was able to cross-reference the location of Anglo-Saxon burials, masonry and artefacts and overlay these with the plans of the abbey. This has helped to narrow down and identify the most likely burial site for Bishop Heahmund as being near the remaining abbey ruins within the park. At the time of writing, further research may be about to start, with the help of Exeter University. We are hoping to learn more about Bishop Heahmund and his burial in Keynsham, which in turn may lead to the discovery of more information about Keynsham Abbey. It would be remiss of Keynsham not to honour this location. I hope that, with support and help, we will be able to preserve and treasure this heritage for future generations. I acknowledge and thank Professor James Clark, Exeter University, for his support and direction in this research. Andy Williams

Choirs team up to help good cause

A LIVE online concert will raise money for a Keynsham music club for people with learning disabilities. The event, to be broadcast on YouTube on Sunday November 1, will support the work of the Music Man Project run by Keynsham Mencap. A total of 250 singers from 14 choirs across the UK have been recording their performances, which will be edited together for the live broadcast, Choirshow 2, at 7.30pm. On the night, there will be live green room of the choir directors, plus a live interval performance, and the audience will be able to share comments using the YouTube chat function - and even join in with some short bits of community singing. Choirshow 2 is organised by Matt Finch, musical director for Bath Light Operatic Group, and is a direct result of his nine choirs being unable to perform for the past eight months.

Matt said: “Most of my choirs have been rehearsing on Zoom since lockdown began, but with no real performance to work toward. Some of the choirs began to spontaneously make virtual videos and we started sharing them on Facebook, mainly for family and friends. “The videos were great and deserved a much bigger audience. I wanted a way of celebrating the choirs’

achievements and an online concert, in collaboration with other UK choirs, seemed to be the perfect vehicle.” The first Choirshow in July attracted more than 1,200 views and raised more than £1,000 for charity. Tickets for Choirshow 2, priced £8.50 per household, can be purchased via Eventbrite at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ choirshow-tickets-117232638979

There is a code for each choir involved that gives audience members £1 off and donates 25% of the rest of their ticket price to the choir of their choice. At the end of the show, there will also be a virtual bucket shake in aid of the Music Man Project . Matt said: “The Music Man is a place where students can go to share their musical tastes and enjoy making music with friends, as well as learning about musical performance, improvisation and composition. “Through the coronavirus crisis, the charity has seen a significant drop in income. This is a chance for us to make a real difference to many local musicians”. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Stopping the virus is our personal responsibility IT has been over six months since coronavirus restrictions were introduced and I’m sure many of us are just as frustrated and concerned as we were back in March. It is important that we do not let our guard down. We all need to continue to play our part and follow the Government’s three tier regulations to prevent the virus transmission increasing any further in our area. We have seen how certain parts of the country are now facing increased restrictions and we must do all we can to avoid this from happening across Avon and Somerset. I know local people are concerned what will happen if a national lockdown is enforced, and how this will impact our lives, local businesses, workplaces and schools. Let’s hope it does not reach this stage and, if it does, it is not for as long as the lockdown in the spring.

Please continue to follow the rules and guidance to keep you and your family safe as well as protecting the most vulnerable in our communities. As I’ve said many times over the last six months, please take personal responsibility; you might not feel you are vulnerable to the virus but other people’s loved ones will be. We know that the transmission of this virus can be rapid, so we have to work as a collective to stop coronavirus and put an end to its disruptive nature. Last month, we marked National Hate Crime Awareness Week and it was an ideal opportunity to talk about the impact this crime has on many people’s lives. This year, the global conversation has shone a light on the grave injustices experienced by black people, people of colour, disabled people and many other communities as a result of coronavirus,

the national lockdown and the criminal justice system. A brave victim of hate crime wrote about their experience, which was published on the PCC website. Despite living and working in the UK for 15 years, they were told they “didn’t belong here” as “this is England for English people” and was called a “foreigner”. The victim explained how the experience affected their well-being and why they believe others should report similar hate crime incidents to the police or services. Being targeted because of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other reason is unacceptable. We must stand together united against hate crime. We need to reach out to victims of this awful crime and remind them they are not alone: there are organisations, services and individuals who are

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens out there who can offer support, including SWAN (www.swanadvocacy.org.uk) and SARI (www. sariweb.org.uk). I want to reassure victims that if you report hate incidents to the police, you will be taken seriously. I know many survivors feel like they will be wasting police time if they report but this is not the case: you will be listened to and supported.

Acting degree course 'to empower young' AN EXCITING opportunity to study a degree in stage and screen has been launched for aspiring actors. Tobacco Factory Theatres in Southville, Bristol, will host the two-year course, after teaming up with leading creative industry training provider, boomsatsuma. The Acting for Stage and Screen BA (Hons) is part of the company's new “future-focused, conservatoire-style” drama school, Bristol School of Acting, and begins in September 2021. It is an intensive degree with 43 weeks of teaching per year - the same amount of contact hours as a three-year course, but students save around £5,000 in tuition fees and a year’s living costs. Students will study as a resident acting company in training at the theatre, with opportunities to collaborate and learn with professional actors, directors and visiting artists. The Bottle Yard Studios, in Whitchurch Lane, which has

Bristol School of Acting's co-artistic directors Nancy Medina and Stuart Wood played host to TV series Poldark, Broadchurch and Wolf Hall, will be hosting the drama school's other two-year Acting for Screen BA (Hons) degree. Acclaimed director Nancy Medina has been appointed

as Bristol School of Acting’s co-artistic director, with course content - accredited by Bath Spa University - devised by the school's patron and Daredevil star Charlie Cox and New York's prestigious Pace University.

Nancy said: “We are creating a new kind of course that will empower young people to find their voices and make themselves heard. “Starting from fresh means we can be bold and steer a radical approach to inclusivity, with a pro-active anti-discrimination policy. It’s a priority for me to bring opportunity to the marginalised areas of society.” Stuart Wood, co-artistic director of Bristol School of Acting, explained his motivation for creating the school. “I’ve worked in many drama schools during my 38-year career and have delivered some great training, but it’s time to challenge the orthodoxy of practitioners who have dominated actor training for decades. “Bristol has a strong cultural heritage and we hope to make it stronger.” For more details about the course and how to apply, visit www.boomsatsuma.education/ schoolofacting.

n NEWS Hair we go: Right, the various styles that Lee Fellows has adopted for Movember, which he has backed since 2016 - this year he is dying his hair and moustache blue

Lee gets growing again for charity CHARITY fundraiser Lee Fellows is bringing a touch of colour to his efforts this month. Since 2016, the Keynsham dad has been backing Movember, the global campaign that aims to improve men’s physical and mental health. Supporters spend each November growing a moustache to raise money to help tackle suicide, as well as testicular and prostate cancer, and to encourage men to open up about their mental health. Lee explained: “This year I'm going to rock the classic horse shoe! But with masks being an essential part of our lives at the moment, I've had to improvise.

“As well as styling my moustache, I’m also planning to dye both my hair and my moustache blue, the colour closely associated with depression. “If they can’t see my moustache, the hair will catch people’s eye and hopefully lead to the conversations on men’s health we're trying to promote. “Every hour we lose 60 men to suicide across the world, which is a frightening statistic. I’m also taking part in the Move for Movember challenge, which involves running or walking 60 kilometres (37.2 miles) over the month. That along with my hair and moustache will hopefully get people talking!”

Last year, Lee completed the Bristol MoRun 10K mo-run and also ran the Castle Combe 10K dressed as Batman. “All of this made for a fantastic fundraiser and is currently my best year so far.” “This year I once again signed up for the Bristol MoRun, but it’s now a virtual run because of Covid. I'll still complete the 10K as part of the 60K move challenge, and I even get to pick the day I do it on!” Although Lee has raised an increasing amount each year, he is mindful that 2020 has been a tough year financially for many people, so he has set his fundraising target initially at £100.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

O

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

n January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom finally left the European Union following the referendum vote in 2016. Further to the formalities of our departure being ironed out, the Prime Minister has made great effort to strike a trade deal with the EU. However, an arrangement has not materialised since those in the EU responsible for securing a resolution have stymied our attempts at a Canada-style agreement, based on friendship and free trade, being established. Consequently, the prospect of no final trade agreement has been brought to the fore once again in spite of the Premier’s best efforts and the UK’s compliance with the withdrawal agreement by paying the obligatory fees, obeying EU laws and respecting the transition period, all without voting rights. From the outset, the Prime Minister has pushed for the

benefits of negotiating the terms and conditions of our future doing business with the EU as an independent state. This is why, in a letter to all MPs and Peers, Boris Johnson has asked Parliamentarians to prepare themselves for an Australian-style scenario from January 1, 2021, formulated around the simple principles of global free trade with an emphasis on protecting the UK’s sovereignty and fisheries. Whilst I am pleased that headway has been made in areas such as aviation, social security and nuclear cooperation, it is a pity that during these uncertain times the EU continues with insincere negotiations and preferential treatment of other countries. This is the type of conduct that led to over half the electorate wanting to withdraw in the first place. I am, therefore, pleased that the Prime Minister is standing firm, putting the best interests of our nation first.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Heating homes without costing the earth

T

o reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, all our gas boilers – and there are more than 20 million of them – must either be converted to ‘green’ gas or replaced with an electric heating solution powered by renewables. What replacement options are there? Air source heat pumps extract heat from the air and pump it into radiators. Biomass boilers burn sustainably sourced woodchip. Electric combi-boilers use electricity (ideally from renewable sources) to heat the water. Another way to decarbonise heat is district heating networks, especially in new-build estates. This has been the norm in Scandinavia for decades. Our gas boilers could be powered by hydrogen gas. However, hydrogen gas is created through a complex process driven by methane, a very potent greenhouse gas. So, hydrogen that’s produced by this method

The way we keep warm will have to change to hit green targets isn’t carbon neutral. You can make hydrogen without carbon intensive inputs (and outputs) by using renewable electricity to electrolyse water. This method is expensive, but costs are coming down as renewable wind and solar technologies become cheaper. The Government’s new Green

Homes grants – up to £5,000 or £10,000 for people on low incomes – cover energy efficiency measures such as loft insulation, replacement windows and doors, and heating controls, as well as new heating technologies including air source heat pumps and biomass boilers. One notable omission is

replacement natural gas boilers. The natural gas industry is keen to position hydrogen as the best opportunity to decarbonise our heat networks – by blending ‘green’ hydrogen with current gas flows and eventually upping the amount of hydrogen in the mix. Some boiler manufacturers are already making ‘hydrogen ready’ boilers – but you won’t get a green grant for them. Hydrogen gas is an important ingredient in decarbonising, but shouldn’t be the only focus for research, development and investment. Heating individual homes with low-carbon technology or district heating schemes – all powered by renewables – are equally important ingredients in providing low-cost heat to our homes that doesn’t cost the earth. l Green Homes grants: https:// www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-forthe-green-homes-grant-scheme LIZ BARLING

November, 2020

and a trainee Interfaith Minister

W

ell, here we are in November again … fallen leaves, rain, cold, frosty nights and days of glorious sunshine - and also days where it doesn’t ever get light properly. This year we are dealing with more isolation and perhaps loneliness than ever before and a level of background anxiety that it’s hard to escape from. In this context we come to reflect on All Saints Day (November 1), All Souls Day (November 2) and Remembrance Sunday (November 8). All Saints used to be All Hallows, meaning holy. Hopefully we all know some people we could describe as holy but perhaps we would use a different word? Maybe it was their exceptional love for us, kindness or gentleness? Or perhaps their activism? Maybe they helped us out when we were struggling or influenced the way we think? So November 1 is a time we can remember the holy people. All Souls Day is an opportunity to think of everyone else who has died, the good, the bad and the ugly. The people we forgave and those we have yet to forgive. We could acknowledge our ancestors, without

whom we would not be here. Remembering our war dead on Remembrance Sunday can be an opportunity to think about all who have died in all wars. Those past and those present, for example, in Armenia, Syria and Yemen. We can reflect on the immense sacrifices of soldiers and civilians and on the injustices, greed and megalomania that cause wars to happen. It might be a time to consider what we can do at home to create a more peaceful world – for example, resolving the conflicts within ourselves, listening to guided meditations on the internet, signing petitions or getting better informed about why current wars are happening. As the old song goes: ‘Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me’. So we remember our dead this month. Perhaps we could think especially of those who have died during the Covid epidemic, who haven’t been able to have the death or funeral that their friends and family wanted and all who mourn them. There’s a video in memory of all who have died of Covid in Somerset here https://youtu.be/q6eWBLDLqC0

ver the next few months, watch our tubs and troughs on the High Street, Temple Street, Chandag Road, Longmeadow Drive and Queens Road, as the planting begins to bloom into a mass of bright winter bedding. This is due to the hard work of all our In Bloom volunteers and the planting helpers on Queens Road. Keynsham Railway Station’s flower beds are undergoing winter planting too. The troughs on the platform have been planted with ‘berries and cream’ pansies and hyacinths for residents and visitors to our town to enjoy. Our recent litter pick at the station was a huge success. How we're keeping

Keynsham Mencap activities include gardening sessions and picnics

KEYNSHAM Mencap is continuing to support its members during the pandemic through the innovation of its services and determination of its staff and volunteers. The charity provides social opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism in a safe and supported environment, as well as muchneeded respite to parents and carers. It usually organises social clubs for adults and children, music lessons, sports clubs, group holidays, community outings and outdoor pursuit activities. But at the start of the pandemic, the ten clubs had to close. For many members, attending their club was the only activity they enjoyed, and it was a lifeline they looked forward to every week. connections alive to combat isolation

Keynsham Mencap has organised 84 socially distanced visits to members' homes and 10 outdoor football sessions during the pandemic for the kindness and generosity of our supporters within the community. “Among our army of supporters, we also had a great response from some major grant funders, including Children in Need, Quartet, Sport England, Comic Relief and the National Lottery Community Fund, who

have awarded us grants that have been crucial during this challenging time. “With the latest restrictions, the hope that all our clubs could return to some kind of normality is still very much uncertain. “Our members are placed in the ‘highly vulnerable’ category, and the complexity of holding

sessions inside means that until we know it is completely safe to do so, most of our social clubs will not reopen in the original capacity for a very long time.” If you would like to support the charity, you can do so by making donations, giving up a couple of hours of your time, or even taking part in a challenge.

As well as general appeals for donations, the society has two major appeals running at the moment. One is to recruit two new trustees and the other is to fill its Bath Half Marathon team for September 5 next year. Details can be found on its website or by contacting info@ keynshammencap.org.uk.

Creativity sparkles on virtual arts trail

FOUR jewellery makers will exhibit their work during the Cam Valley Virtual Arts Trail. They are among more than 30 local artists and crafters taking part in the event from October 31 to November 8. Jane Wills bought her first kiln when she retired, and her enamel discovery journey began. Current work includes jewellery on copper and fine silver - earrings, pendants, brooches and cufflinks. All celebrate colour. Colour, texture and movement are vital to the work of Liz Johnson, who has been designing bead jewellery for more than 20 years. Inspiration is gathered from the creativity and bold use of colour used in many parts of the world, together with the use of semi-precious stones. Alison ter Haar’s favoured method of work is with fusing, where glass is heated in a kiln and the layers melt together. She loves to use dichroic glass in her jewellery, as it adds a metallic sparkle to the pieces. She says that working with glass is demanding but satisfying. Silversmith Sophie Piddock is exploring the realms of bigger pieces of metal and textiles, finding inspiration from all things quirky and fun. Their web pages can be found at www.camvalleyartstrail. co.uk, where visitors can browse from the comfort of their own homes and buy affordable art direct from the individual. Visit the trail’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages to see videos of artists’ studios, watch demonstrations or join an online workshop.

RUNNERS have been signing up for this year’s virtual Saltford Santa Dash. Although entrants cannot run en masse this time because of Covid-19 restrictions, it is hoped that lots of people will take to the streets of Saltford between December 5 and 19. There’s still plenty of time to enter by visiting www. saltfordsantadash.co.uk. Registration includes a Santa hat and a medal on completion, but to encourage participants to enter into the Christmas spirit, there will also be prizes for the best-dressed runner (or walker) and best-dressed dog. To enter, share your photos on Facebook or Instagram, tagging @saltfordsanta or using #saltfordsantadash. Alongside the Santa Dash, there will be a Santa scarecrow trail around Saltford for the same two weeks. Scout HQ was transformed into a temporary flu clinic at the end of October in partnership with St Augustine’s Medical Practice. Volunteer stewards from 1st Keynsham helped make the day run smoothly, with almost 800 vaccinations. Several people commented that it had been a long time since they had been back in a Scout hut, and it was also heartwarming to see that several donations to the group were made in lieu of offering the Scout HQ and stewards free of charge. The Scouts themselves have been busy with exciting programmes and activities. Vow to stop children's holiday hunger CHILDREN who receive free school meals in Bath and North East Somerset will be supported during holidays, the council’s Liberal Democrats have pledged. Councillor Kevin Guy, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “I am appalled at the Government’s recent decision not to extend the free school meal provision for the upcoming holidays. “In B&NES we have more than 4,000 children who are eligible to receive free school meals and I am working with my cabinet colleagues and local charities on how we might be able to provide the funding for

these children up to the Easter holidays next year. All options will be explored to ensure no child in B&NES goes hungry over the holiday periods.” A Bill to extend to free school meals over the holidays – backed by footballer Marcus Rashford – was defeated by MPs. Among those who voted against was North Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, who argued afterwards that the government was seeking “the same ends but by different means”. But Councillor Guy accused the MP of showing “a complete lack of sympathy for the most vulnerable people.”

Labour councillors have submitted a motion to the next B&NES meeting on November 12, calling on the council to provide food vouchers to children on free school meals over half term and the Christmas break. Meanwhile, pubs, cafes and restaurants have been offering to help feed children during the holidays. In Keynsham, they include The Crown Inn, which has been offering free food to children of families in need from Monday October 26, and The Charlton, which is running a ‘kids eat free’ promotion until November 8.

Diane's memoir unearths family secrets A RETIRED Saltford school secretary has published her memoir. Always in the Dark, by Diane Harding, is described as ‘one woman's search for answers from a family shrouded in secrets'. Diane Harding, who has lived in Saltford for the past 35 years, starts her story in Cape Town, where she was born, then shifts to England when she is aged 14, after her father secures a transfer with Cadbury’s. In 1966 the family settle in Saltford

but then move to Sea Mills in Bristol. It is obvious her home life is strange but it is only after her mother’s death that she discovers a wealth of astonishing information. The search for the truth sends Diane on a mission to talk to many people, only to discover that she is the last to know the reason for her dysfunctional family life. Produced by BLKDOG Publishing, the book is available from Waterstones, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Make a will to help hospital

THE popular RUH Will Month is returning in November to help the public make or update their will at a reduced cost. Ten legal firms, including Wards Solicitors in Keynsham, are taking part and their fees will be donated to the Royal United Hospitals Bath’s fundraising charity, The Forever Friends Appeal. Special procedures have been put in place to ensure clients will be in a safe environment during appointments. RUH Will Month will run for one month only, offering a single standard will for £125 or standard mirror wills or joint wills for £175. This year, funds raised by the initiative will go towards the charity’s Speech and Language Special Appeal, which is raising £50,000 to buy a portable machine to enhance the care given to patients who have swallowing difficulties. The equipment will enable speech and language therapists

Speech and language therapist Claire Young with a patient to provide an alternative bedside assessment – reducing the waiting time to attend the X-ray clinic, which can sometimes take a number of weeks. The need for the mobile equipment has become even more pressing during the

Covid-19 pandemic. Patients who have been on a ventilator have a 30% chance of suffering from swallowing difficulties. So having this machine will really help the speech and language therapy team to assess Covid patients. Catherine Cawley, clinical specialist and speech and language therapist at the RUH, said: “Having this machine will be a game changer. We will be able to give our patients a quicker diagnosis, recommend treatment and reduce the possibility of further medical complications.” However, participants can choose to support another campaign or special appeal if they prefer. Ruth Coles TEP, partner at Wards Solicitors in Keynsham said: “We are delighted to have contributed to vital fundraising and continue to offer our support to this most worthwhile cause.” To contact Wards, visit www.wards.uk.com or call 01179 863504.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non-Fiction

Mary Berry Everyday Mary Berry

Following on from Mary Berry’s current television programme is her Everyday book from 2017. As with all Mary Berry’s cookery books, there is a wide selection of delicious recipes (120) for all occasions. It begins with helpful suggestions on meal planning and express entertaining. Then there are very scrummy family suppers and great food for sharing. Some of these include: spicy Mexican samosas; potato, leek and cheese pie; a colourful threebeetroot salad with mozzarella and basil; and everyone’s favourite sticky toffee pudding. A great book for trying something different in the kitchen. Adult Fiction

The Emerald Comb Kathleen McGurl

reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library Assistant Katie is happily married with children and likes nothing more than tracing her

ancestors in her spare time. When by chance an ancestor’s home comes up for sale, she persuades her husband to buy it. As the story swaps from an ancestor’s letter confessing to a crime to Katie’s family settling into their new home, a mystery is solved and a ghost laid to rest, but who is the victim of the crime and where are the remains? An enjoyable read despite the topic.

The Girl Behind the Gate Brenda Davies

reviewed by Kerri Brain It’s 1939 and Nora Jennings is 17 and enjoying life. She is loved by her family and her future is bright. But when she finds herself pregnant, her life is turned upside down. Taken to an institution, she is seemingly forgotten by friends and family. Her treatment for being deemed a ‘moral defective’ is incarceration within Hillinghurst Hospital and Institution until the baby is born (better than imprisonment for her attempt to abort the baby with medicines of the era). With only a few staff being nice to her, life is a miserable existence. In 1981, Janet Humphreys

LLLL BBBBBBBB SSSSS WWWW N e e d m or e s t o r ag e s p ac e ?

takes on a job as a medical practitioner. She discovers the severely institutionalised Nora and makes it her mission to make Nora’s life as full and independent as she can. Nora is finally able to go back out through the gates - 47 years and four months since the day she entered. A fascinating, albeit shocking novel based on a true event, written by the practitioner who helped the real-life ‘Nora’ adapt. Children's Fiction

The Taylor Turbochaser David Baddiel

I heard David Baddiel being interviewed recently about his latest children’s book and wondered if there are any more of his books in Keynsham Library – and there is! The main character is Amy Taylor, who absolutely loves cars and hopes one day to be a driver. However there is a slight problem – her old wheelchair is slow and knackered! Then one day Amy gets a new electric one – this is cool but still not right. Her great friend Rahul comes to the rescue. As a genius inventor, he creates the Turbochaser, a real supercar, and with this Amy learns to drive and the real adventures begin. This is a great modern story

with relatable characters and great illustrations. A fun-packed read!

When Martha’s Away Bruce Ingman

Have you ever wondered what your pet gets up to when you’re out of the house all day? Meet Lionel and his friends and read all about their antics when Lionel’s owner Martha goes out to work. The tongue-in-cheek humour of this wonderful picture book is a treat for children and adults alike. It’s a firm favourite of several of the library staff.

Dipping into the life of pond and river with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

T

he last weekend of September had a very watery theme for the Keynsham group of the Avon Wildlife Trust, writes chairman Dave Sage. On both days I had great support from vice-chair Kathy Farrell, who organised all the considerable Covid precautions, and Sarah Stone, from the Chandag primary schools, who helped the children with the dipping. On Saturday, the target audience was under-7s, pond dipping in Wellsway School’s lovely pond. The children, accompanied by parents, formed into four small socially isolated bubbles of six spread over two hours, and were able to try out the new dipping platform, installed the previous week by brilliant site manager Kerry Silverthorn. The catch was outstanding, possibly reflecting the lack of use and disturbance by Wellsway students over the summer. Eighteen different species were caught, observed and identified, ranging from “monsters of the deep” such as dragonfly and damselfly nymphs, waterboatmen, young newts and diving beetles, to the ghostly transparent phantom midge larvae (present in huge numbers), to the barely visible water fleas and “cyclops”, the oneeyed miniscule crustaceans. On Sunday, the over-7s helped out with the annual river dipping event in the river Chew at Dapp’s Hill bridge. Again, organised into two separate bubbles, they enthusiastically kicked the stony

River dipping in the river Chew at Dapp’s Hill bridge, where 12 different species were discovered riverbed and caught in their nets the disturbed animals carried in the flowing sediment. The catch was less remarkable here, just 12 different species, possibly reflecting the low water level, combined with the construction of a row of stones across the river, slowing the flow. There were also fewer samples taken than usual. Nevertheless, we did find some key unpolluted water indicators, including fish (bullhead and stone loach), stonefly nymphs, burrowing mayfly nymphs, and case-less caddisfly larvae, although in much lower numbers than in recent years. This tells us that water quality remains good enough to support a healthy fish population. Again, great fun was had by all, not to mention several wellies full of water!

Support Poppy Appeal and stay safe

PEOPLE in the Keynsham and Saltford area are being asked to support the Poppy Appeal in a new way this year. The Royal British Legion is asking the public to show their support remotely in line with Covid-19 restrictions, by ordering poppies through the post for their neighbours and local community, printing a poppy and displaying it in their

window, or undertaking a virtual Poppy run. Esther Denton, the legion’s new community fundraiser for Bristol and South Gloucestershire, said: “The appeal has to adapt to the threat of Covid-19 and we are asking the public to support us like never before, because every poppy counts. “Our community of staff, volunteers, partners and suppliers

have been working together to ensure that the 2020 Poppy Appeal is able to go ahead and we can all take part in Remembrance activity.” The Royal British Legion gives care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. The jungle cat that ate my underpants!

O

ur first meeting of the season, how different! Gone, our normal gettogethers at the Baptist Church Hall. However our Zoom meeting proved a great alternative to hear Paul Williams’ wonderful talk about his career as wildlife TV producer for the BBC Natural History Unit. Paul started out as a palaeontologist working at the Natural History Museum in London before sending his CV to the BBC. This fortuitously landed on the desk of someone creating a series about evolution, and Paul was given a short-term contract. His first task was to create a giant life-sized ammonite out of polystyrene which he then wheeled along the beach at Lyme Regis, to onlookers’ amazement, to compare with the smallest ammonites found there. Following this, he secured a full-time position at the BBC NHU. His talk took us through many of the series he has worked on, with some amusing anecdotes. The best one involved the beautiful ocelot, a small cat found in Central and South America. The cat proved very difficult to find as the team searched high and low in thick jungle each day. One night Paul woke to a strange sound and on examination found the ocelot busy eating his underpants under his bed! In recent times technology has become more important as the unit looks to create new and different ways of filming animal behaviour. Paul has to manage both the filming on location and the equipment, which can amount to dozens of bags. The BBC is now trying to reduce its

for vast palm oil plantations, an orangutan and baby needed to be transported from an area of destruction to safety. But the baby received the anaesthetic dart designed for the mother, and it was touch and go as to whether the baby would survive. Luckily all ended well, although the tragedy of the destruction still continues. All nature programmes now coming out of the BBC NHU discuss the problems our planet is facing from all sides to raise awareness of the issues involved. He says his job is to help audiences fall in love with nature, by showing the real-life dramas that unfold in the natural world. Although there is a script written for each sequence in advance, the animals don’t necessarily follow them, and the film crew have to take what they can, as happened when trying to film man-eating tigers in the Sunderbans wetland area of Bangladesh. The team struggled as tigers eluded them for weeks, until eventually a tiger walked along a bank, giving just a few minutes of footage, the highlight being it scent-marking on a tree. But it still made the programme! Another shoot featured the Mongolian Pallas’s cat, which had never been filmed before. While on location, their camp was destroyed during a storm and the cat family they had been watching disappeared. They eventually caught up with them again and filmed an amazing interaction between the two adult cats and their kittens. Mud, Sweat and Tears - a very apt title for this great talk enjoyed by all.

n NEWS Mimi Thebo has conjured up a story treat for children

November, 2020

Halloween tale casts a spell AN ACCLAIMED children’s author has written a Halloween story especially for the children of Keynsham. Mimi, who lives in the town, is a Carnegielonglisted author for children and teens, and her work has been translated into 12 languages. She said: “I’m well known for my scary trick-or-treating in Keynsham. I’m really going to miss it this year – I always dress up and talk to the children like I’m a real witch. “So this year, I wrote a Halloween story, set on Sherwood Road, just for the children of Keynsham and filmed it.” Mimi, who is Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Bristol and a Royal Literary Fellow, has made her story free to view and share for parents and for schools on YouTube. “I hope it brings some fun to the children during this difficult time.” She has hung a QR code for the story on her front gate for locals, but those wishing to watch it can also use the code printed here or go to YouTube and search for ‘Mimi Thebo Halloween story’.

PEN TO PAPER Six Little Mermaid Heads A little ditty inspired by a photo posted by a friend on Facebook. Six little mermaid heads drying in a boat, One fell into the drink but she didn’t float. Five little mermaid heads drying in a boat, One said “it’s cold out here” and went to get her coat. Four little mermaid heads drying in a boat, One ate a monster fish that got stuck in her throat. Three little mermaid heads drying in a boat, One said some naughty words which I dare not quote. Two little mermaid heads drying in a boat, One sang a shanty song which the skipper wrote. One little mermaid head drying in a boat, One had a sailor’s pipe, but couldn’t play a note. No little mermaid heads drying in a boat, So that’s the end of my little anecdote. Vase triumph over

Jordan Metters puts the Ks ahead from the penalty spot, above, before scoring a superb second, below, against Bradford Town

n FRY CLUB FC

November, 2020

IT has been another month of mixed fortunes for Keynsham Town in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, with some inconsistent results sandwiching another excellent victory in the FA Vase. The club have continued to do everything they can to make the AJN Stadium safe for spectators in the current climate of Covid-19. Home attendances have been up so far this season, as people who are unable to watch professional football realise what a good alternative non-league football represents. The Ks saw the month of September out with a fine 2-0 win at home to Bradford

Town. A tight first half ended goalless, but after the half-time whistle blew, both sides were reduced to 10 men before they reached the dressing room after an altercation. However, Keynsham dominated the second period, with new signing Jordan Metters showing his class, firstly with a penalty and then a fine solo run ending with a sweet left-foot finish. But the Ks then produced a disappointing performance four days later at Clevedon Town, where they fell to a 2-1 defeat. Although Jordan Metters pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, the home side were worth their win. A much-better showing came in another away game the following Wednesday at Westbury United, but Keynsham again went home empty-handed. The Ks had the better of the first half without anything to show for it, then a lapse in concentration straight from the restart saw them fall a goal behind. Despite some good late pressure from the Ks, Westbury made the game safe with a breakaway goal three minutes from time. The highlight of the month was just around the corner though, when the Ks

Strange times, but we're glad to be back

FRY Club FC has been assessing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic following the resumption of matches. It has gathered feedback from players and club officials that has revealed the following: l A lot of teams were frustrated that the season could not be finished and was then suspended. l Players and managers started to feel the loss of friends and football, which was a big struggle but was obviously for the right reasons. l When we were given the goahead to start training again, this was a massive buzz, but it had to come with some big changes. l We had to buy hand sanitiser make sure everything the club did was compliant with the regulations set out by the FA.

l During pre-season, we had to make sure that the player-tocoach ratio was correct and social distancing was maintained. We at Fry Club FC feel we did a great job with this challenge. l Now games have resumed – we are pleased that we have all five teams and a veterans’ team, with old and new players attending training and playing matches. l But we still have a lot of issues.

Players are unable to car-share, and new rules put in place by all the clubs dictate how many people can change at the same time. Some teams get changed on the side of the pitch instead of using the changing rooms. l The costs of running football teams still must be paid, regardless of the damage the coronavirus has caused. Fry’s FC, just like any other team, has its bills to pay, which we find a big

problem as we are unable to have social events to bring in revenue. l Throughout this troubling time, Somerdale Pavilion have tried their very best to help with all our normal requirements, but they also must make sure things are correct for the safety of their staff and members. As Fry Club FC are members of the Somerdale Pavilion, we fully understand the hardship. l The return to football has been long-awaited, very welcome but a little strange. Players miss the pre-match banter and the shaking of hands after a game, which is now replaced with a fist bump or an elbow tap. Restrictions have changed football massively, but for the love of the game, players, managers and officials will adapt to these new restrictions.

local rivals is welcome relief for the Ks

Cam Ricketts fires in a shot for Keynsham Town in the home fixture against Bradford Town - new signing Jordan Metters scored twice for the Ks thumped local rivals Oldland Abbotonians 5-0 away in the FA Vase Second Qualifying Round. In a tight first half on a bobbly pitch, Jordan Metters put Keynsham ahead with a cool finish after a quick free kick by skipper Harley Purnell. After the break, the Ks looked more like Bayern Munich as they added three more goals inside the first 10 minutes, with two from Matt Brown and an Adey Harvey half-volley. Brown completed his hat-trick in the

dying minutes to send the many Keynsham fans home dreaming of Wembley! A topsy-turvy game at Cribbs was next up, where Keynsham were edged out 3-2. The Ks were second best before the interval, which saw Cribbs go in two goals to the good. Adey Harvey pulled a goal back but the hosts made it 3-1 within a couple of minutes. Harvey then received a red card with 20 minutes remaining for a dangerous tackle, but the Ks

dominated the last 20; Mike Grist pulled one back and the Cribbs goal led a charmed life until the final whistle blew. It was back to Crown Fields next for the Ks, but they were held to a 0-0 draw by visitors Shepton Mallet in a game of few clear-cut chances. November sees the following home games at Crown Fields: l Saturday Nov 7: First XI v Westbury United, League, 3pm l Monday Nov 9: Under 18s v Portishead Town, League, 7.45pm

l Saturday Nov 14: First XI v Odd Down, League, 3pm l Saturday Nov 21: Reserves v Stockwood Green, League, 3pm l Saturday Nov 28: Reserves v Chilcompton Sports, League, 3pm You can keep up to date with all the Ks news via their website at keynshamtownfc.co.uk, their Facebook page Keynsham Town Football Club and Twitter on @KeynshamTownFC. News of how the season has developed will be in the December issue of the Keynsham Voice.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

WELLSWAY Short Mat Bowling Club have been given ‘Covid safe club’ status by our national governing body, the ESMBA. We have put in place all the requirements needed to keep our members safe while playing the great game of short mat bowls. We are looking to recruit new members to join us on Tuesdays 1pm-4.30pm, Thursdays 9.30am12pm, or Thursdays 1pm-4.30pm, at the Scout Hut, Ashton Way, Keynsham. Free parking is available behind the hut. The game is easy to play, helps you stay fit, and is ideal for those who want to pass a few hours each week in the company of friends. All equipment is supplied and

WITH all competitive fixtures being cancelled, bowling clubs up and down the country arranged internal competitions to allow members to use the green - and Keynsham was no exception. Under government guidelines, outside sports were allowed in early June with strict controls in place, and bowling returned. While friendly roll-ups were a good way to start, some members wanted a more competitive game, so member Roger Price organised a singles and pairs league. This was played over a few weeks, and on the finals day, Sally Difazio edged out Graham Martin by 18 shots to 14 in the singles final. Graham then featured in the

pairs final where, with his partner Lindsey Allen, they beat Bob Payne and Beresford Parker. During September, Bob Payne arranged a triples league which was won by Graham Martin, Carm Riccio, Graham Ball and Mick Funnell. The hard work now starts on the green under the watchful eye of green manager Derek Packer as we prepare for season 2021. Normally we would be looking forward to a winter of events organised by our social committee, but that is all of course now on hold including the muchanticipated Christmas party. We look forward to better times in 2021.

ith the pandemic causing financial concerns for sports clubs up and down the UK, November sees the launch of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club’s Covid-19 Appeal. This will be a Crowdfunder project, which will work by people or organisations pledging a donation, often in return for a reward of their choice. The club have set an initial target of £12,000, of which a £6,000 match fund will be pledged by Active Together – Sport England’s Extra Funding Scheme during the Covid-19 crisis - upon reaching 25% of the target with a minimum of 75 supporters. The appeal works on an allor-nothing basis, meaning that if

the target is not reached, Sport England withdraw their pledge and any money taken is given back to supporters. KASC returned to the water on September 7 and have been able to provide a near-to-full training programme for all their swimmers. However, pool costs remain the same, and the numbers allowed in the water are greatly reduced due to Covid-19 guidance set out by Swim England. Because of this, running costs are not quite being met and would ordinarily be topped up by holding swimming galas, which are not allowed for the foreseeable future. Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club are fortunate enough to have emergency reserves to draw on, but these will not last forever. So this is where their Crowdfunder comes in. The target amount of £12,000 will keep the club swimming without interruption until, hopefully, things return to a near normal in summer 2021.

sessions from Mike Uren, plus much, much more. There is also a selection of draws to enter, from as little as £1, to be in with the chance to win vouchers from South West Dog Skills and Tynings Fish and Chips, signed sporting merchandise and festive hampers.
