Festival scrapped but we'll be back KEYNSHAM Music Festival has been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak. This will be the first time the summer festival has not taken place since its inception 23 years ago. But plans are already under way for the festival’s return next year. Festival chairman Mike May said: “Over the past several weeks, our world has been turned upside down by the global coronavirus pandemic. “Our hearts are with everyone impacted by it. It is with deep sadness that the trustees of Keynsham Music Festival have decided not to stage the 2020 festival. “This difficult decision has been made in light of the current situation that we all face and feel together. Like many around the world, we are doing our best to quickly adjust to these complex times. “Our volunteers have been working since n Turn to Page 2

Headline act at the 2019 festival was Da Fuchman but music fans will miss out this year

Festival called off n From Page 1 last November to organise what was going to be our biggest, most diverse and most exciting festival ever. “Every one of our suppliers has offered to carry over our deposits and current contracts until next year, for which we are very grateful. “All trader deposits will be fully refunded in the coming days. All artists, performers, acts and traders will be rebooked for the festival in 2021. “All of the people who work in the industry upon which the festival relies so much every year now find themselves in a very difficult and unknown future. We send our heartfelt best wishes to all of them. We will continue to monitor the situation and hope that we will be able to put on a special community event later in the year. “As a Keynsham resident myself, I know how much the festival means to the community and the local businesses that are involved. “It’s amazing that an event of this size and calibre is organised purely by volunteers and is a huge testament to the incredible things that can be done when

local people work together. On behalf of all of the team, thank you all for your support so far. We can’t wait to back in 2021 to celebrate what will be our 25th anniversary.” Organiser Ric Davison said: “Over the last three weeks, it became increasingly obvious that 2020's Keynsham Music Festival - classed as a "major event" in respect of a public gathering would not be able to go ahead. “If it was not cancelled by Government or the local authority, the chances of it going ahead with all suppliers and musicians intact was becoming slimmer. Equally, the financial loss likely for a festival cancelled at the last minute is unsustainable. “The festival trustees met on Monday March 16 and the decision to be made was too obvious to require much discussion.” Organisers are keen to let residents know that the Keynsham Music Festival week for 2021 has been planned for Monday June 28 to Sunday July 4. n NEWS PLANS have been put in place by Keynsham Town Council to keep delivering its services during the coronavirus pandemic. The council met on March 17 to consider its business continuity plan and how it can assist the community response to the virus. Council chairman Councillor Andy Wait said: “The council and the Keynsham community have had to respond to a series of drastic but necessary measures introduced by the Government to support the NHS from being overwhelmed, protect our high-risk population, and sustain businesses and workers through what will be a lengthy period of social distancing and self-isolation. “The flight announcement that says ‘put your own oxygen mask on before you help others’ was never more applicable as to how the council has prepared in order to provide sustained support for the community in response to Covid-19. “Thanks to the foresight and hard work of our town clerk, we were able, at what may be the last council meeting for some time, to put in place measures to keep staff and councillors as safe as possible whilst still ensuring the council can continue to function. “The arrangements have been further complicated by the fact that the council is still waiting to return to its own offices in Temple Street, which are finally undergoing reinstatement following the damage caused by the construction works at Riverside. “If all goes to plan, the offices will be ready for staff to return on Wednesday April 8, a year to the day since they were evacuated. “From here the council will be maintaining essential services and providing assistance to community initiatives to support our residents, in particular those in social isolation.” All staff have been working from home since March 23 in line with Government advice, with the aid of portable devices and videoconferencing. Until the office reopens, a temporary mobile number - 07904 161097 - is being staffed from 8.30am-5pm Monday to Wednesday and 9pm to 3pm Thursday and Friday. Once the Temple Street office reopens, the office and the main council phone line on 0117 986 8683 will be staffed on a rota basis.

Coronavirus: How we'll maintain our services KEYNSHAM town council has agreed to set up a £10,000 community resilience contingency fund to help other organisations in their support of people in self-isolation, particularly those who are at risk or otherwise vulnerable. Applications can be made by emailing townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk The council is providing mobile phones and covering call charges to Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford to operate a Befrienders Hotline. Operating 9am-9pm, seven days week, it will provide a listening ear and a friendly voice - including signposting to support locally and nationally - for those in social isolation who may be grieving the loss of what is familiar, worrying about job losses and finances, or dealing with the grief of having lost a loved one. The council has also agreed to cover the cost of the main community support Town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott said: “Because we can only permit one member of staff to be in the office at any one time, the offices will only be available to members of the public by appointment. “We envisage that the office may also at times function as a collection point for various community initiatives as they arise. Obviously, we would ask that anyone visiting the offices complies with the safety precautions, including hand sanitisation and distancing measures. “Our grounds maintenance staff will continue to empty bins, inspect play areas and keep vegetation at bay to ensure our open spaces remain accessible as resources permit. “There will, however, be times where staff are either on annual leave or not well enough

When archers fired at monks A KEYNSHAM author has revealed fascinating facts about Somerset’s colourful past in a new book. Entitled The Little History of Somerset, the book by Mike Dean has been published by The History Press. It is described as “a brief but brilliant tour through Somerset's unique history … that can be dipped into or read from cover to cover. “Jam-packed with fun facts and historical snippets, the book is both full of littleknown information for locals, and a good introduction for history-loving visitors. “Revolution, wassailing, Templars and alchemists – all can be found in this friendly guide to Somerset’s colourful history.” Mike, a retired primary school teacher, said: “The book is meant to be an accessible general history of Somerset, with lots of interesting (and perhaps not so well-known) facts about this lovely county.” These unusual facts include: l After the battle of Sedgemoor in 1685, a prisoner escaped thanks to his athletic ability l A Norman abbot of Glastonbury employed archers to shoot disobedient monks l During the outbreak of the Black Death (1348-9), four successive vicars were appointed at Worle Mike, who is also a registered Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the area, added: “The book contains many more snippets like these, which hopefully will whet readers' appetites to discover more - the book contains a useful bibliography as well as an index. There are also a number of illustrations. “Each chapter deals with a different period in Somerset's history, in chronological order, so the book can be read as a whole or dipped into, as desired.” This is the second of Mike’s books to be published by The History Press, based in Stroud. The first was The Little Book of Bath, published in 2017. The Somerset book, published in hardback, retails at £12 and is already stocked by some local bookshops. Cash award helps hall stay bright ENERGY-saving LED lighting is to be installed in Saltford Hall. An award of £2,000 towards the cost has been made from a Bath & North East Somerset Council fund. The Ward Councillor Empowerment Fund was set up to enable councillors to respond to local needs to improve the lives of residents in their community. Councillor Duncan Hounsell, who successfully applied for the money, said: “Saltford Community Association, which runs the hall, has been working over recent years to maximise the energy efficiency of the building. “Solar panels, modern gas boilers and improved roof and window insulation have already been installed. “Switching all the lights in the building to LED will not only save energy but will also cut running costs and improve the quality of light in the hall.” Councillors across Bath and North East Somerset were each given the opportunity to apply for £2,000 to support projects driven by local residents in their community.

Go it alone to keep our town tidy! LITTER-picking volunteers in Keynsham are being encouraged to go it alone to keep the town looking good during the coronavirus pandemic. Keep Britain Tidy has decided to postpone its Great British Spring Clean until September. It has also advised that all group clean-ups should stop until the end of April, when the situation will be reviewed. But members of Keynsham Wombles are being asked to follow the example of volunteer Alex Price in continuing their valuable work while staying safe. Erica Davies, of the Keynsham Wombles community group, said: “Obviously, this is very disappointing, but we need to keep ourselves protected. I was very cheered up, though, by the sight of Alex doing his own litter pick. “I know many of you do this anyway, so let's be like Alex and do our own litter picks when we are out and about getting our daily allowed dose of fresh air, making sure to keep a safe distance of course.” Any Womble who needs extra equipment is asked to contact Erica, Keynsham’s Chief Womble, at womble@transitionkeynsham.org She said: “Any rubbish you collect can be placed in or next to a B&NES street bin, or in your bin at home if you have room.” If neither of those options are suitable, please contact Erica.

Ear problems in dogs and cats

E

ar problems are common in dogs and cats. Often, pets are stoic about ear pain despite the fact that earache can be extremely painful, so it can be difficult to know there is something wrong. Signs that your pet might have an ear problem include headshaking, scratching one or both ears, rubbing the ear along the ground and reacting when the ear is touched. Sometimes the ear may appear red or feel hot to the touch, and if there is an infection present it may smell or have visible discharge. There are various causes of ear problems in pets. Ear mites are common, particularly in puppies and kittens, and feed off ear wax and oils in the skin. Dogs, particularly those with floppy ears such as spaniels, are prone to foreign bodies such as grass seeds. The classic presentation is a dog with sudden head-shaking after running through fields in the summer. Ears can also become infected with bacteria, yeasts or a combination. In dogs this is often a result of a skin allergy, as ears are essentially a specialised area of the skin. The allergy causes inflammation in the ear, and this makes it more susceptible to infection. Dogs that swim are even more susceptible to ear infections as water getting into the ears creates a moist environment for bacteria and yeasts to survive. Treatment of the ear problem depends on the cause. For infections, a course of ear drops is usually required. Antibiotic drops must be given for a complete course as directed by your vet and should not be used intermittently. Sedation or anaesthesia may be required to remove grass seeds and clean ears more thoroughly. If ear infections are recurrent and an underlying allergy is suspected, your vet may recommend tests to investigate this further.

Window art like this is providing some welcome cheer

Isolated artists create a window wonderland

MEMBERS of the community have set up window trails in Keynsham and Saltford to put a smile on people’s faces during an increasingly uncertain time. Families who are selfisolating are creating a window wonderland for people who are out for a (safe distance) walk. Adults and children are being encouraged to get creative and put a picture up in their window to cheer up passers-by. The trails are part of a national movement, and a plan has been put together to inspire people how to decorate their windows on different days. Ruth Presswood lives in Saltford with her husband and two children, and is a member of the Saltford C of E Primary

PTA. After reading about the Rainbow Trail movement online, she decided to launch something locally, too. She told the Voice: “I’ve always wanted to do a walking window wonderland, and I thought that, as the kids are off, it would give people the chance to be creative and have some fun, as well as encourage children to get involved with the arts and give people something to look at when they are getting some fresh air.” To find out more about the Keynsham and Saltford Trails, search for “Keynsham Window Trail” and “Saltford School PTA” Facebook groups, where you’ll be able to find details of the houses that are taking part in the trails.

ON THE BEAT

Be a good neighbour at a safe distance

T

here are certainly going to be some interesting times ahead. Only a few things in life can be relied on, and the emergency services are at the top at that list. As I write this, we have just changed our normal ways of working to deal with the demand we are being put under. I guess from the outside looking in, not a lot changes - you call 999 and the police attend. Well that’s the theory, and this does happen, but we as an organisation have to screen the calls, make sure it’s an incident that the police need to deal with, and then, depending on the risk to people involved, decide on how high up the list of incidents it goes. This is not the first time we have changed our ways of working to try to make us more efficient. A more efficient police service is a better one, as we will inevitably supply a better service to all. Our aim, as it should be, is to provide the gold standard for all, but what you don’t see is how much is going on behind the scenes to provide this. I

with PC James Evans like to think that we do everything for a reason and that not much time is ‘wasted’, and that’s the aim of this latest change: Maximise the efficiency of the police. n With the changes to normal life that are going on with Covid-19, this is our time to really shine in the community. Be a good neighbour, offer to help the elderly and vulnerable but do this from a distance. Thousands of people are carrying the Covid-19 virus who won’t have a clue, because their body will have already dealt with it or is in the process of doing so. So if you are able to help, do

it from a distance and respect hygiene. If you act as if you have the virus – by, for example, wearing gloves when dropping something off and leaving it in a neutral location – the virus will have a very limited chance of exchange. We need to get back to ‘normal’ life as soon as possible but we all have to do our bit. n Crime-wise in Keynsham, the recent weeks have seen a rise in graffiti around the rooftops of the High Street. It’s clear that people have been gaining access and spray-painting tags while they are up there. Other tags have started to appear up foot lanes. If anyone has any information as to who might be doing this, please pass it on to us at the neighbourhood policing team. n The High Street seems to be a haven for begging at the moment. I have referred to this previously but my appeal seems to have fallen on deaf ears. The harsh reality is that the regular beggars who have been visiting Keynsham recently are part of a group that travel around

Bristol and the surrounding villages preying on your good nature. They earn massive sums of money from this behaviour, hence they continue to return. They do not live in Keynsham but pay to travel to and from daily as it’s financially beneficial for them to be here. They have been offered the appropriate support but choose this as a way of life. Due to them not heeding the warnings they have been given, they will now start being dealt with for the offences they commit. Please do not give them any money or food you really aren’t helping them. n This month, with support from other officers, we executed a drugs warrant and items were recovered. The investigation is ongoing and we are confident we will get a positive outcome, once all of the evidence has been obtained. n In an attempt to reduce the spread of COVID-19, we have had to cancel all our public engagements going forward. Keep an eye on our social media pages for when these are back on.

100 not out! Cricket club celebrates

KEYNSHAM Cricket Club - one of the town’s most successful and thriving sports organisations – celebrates its centenary this year. Early records of cricket in Keynsham are obscure, but the club in its current form was established in 1920. At first there was no permanent ground, but following work by an enterprising committee led by the chairman, Frank Taylor, the Wellsway site was bought in 1927 for £1,500. The mortgage was guaranteed by the trustees, who included the local GP, Dr Claude Harrison. A generous - if sometimes eccentric - man, Dr Harrison later took over the mortgage and wrote it off on the declaration of war in 1939. Despite there being no secondary school in Keynsham until Broadlands was opened in the 1930s, there were sufficient numbers of cricket-playing men and boys in the area to support two separate clubs: Keynsham CC and Keynsham Amateurs CC. Over the early years, a healthy rivalry developed between them but, eventually, they merged. Although the Keynsham CC played good cricket in the interwar years, it was not at the same level as some other local clubs, such as Lansdown. Consequently, young players hoping to get close to county standard were obliged to transfer.

Marcus Trescothick and his father Martyn on Testimonial Day in 2008

A further barrier to recruitment was the residency rule, not rescinded until 1957, which denied membership to players who did not live locally. Unlike during the First World War, cricket continued at a modest level during the Second World War, although the facilities were shared in the summer with various cricketing regiments, numerous military parades and in the winter with sheep! The privations of wartime rationing did not permit refreshments beyond cups

of tea. In 1946 the return of servicemen enabled two teams to be fielded. In front of large numbers of spectators, with no real alternative entertainment, the first eleven performed increasingly well against the very opponents that had formerly been too powerful. The wartime spirit of “can do” improvisation was still in evidence as members worked hard to improve the facilities. The large ex-army hut that stood on the site of the previous pavilion was bought for £150

and the sightscreens were constructed from surplus war materials. The successes of teams and outstanding performers from the 1950s onwards are too numerous to record in detail here, though winning the Western League title in 1979 and the Premier League in 2002 were notable achievements. A number of significant players have been produced over the years, the best-known being Marcus Trescothick, a record-breaking England international. Off the pitch, the old wooden pavilion was replaced by the present clubhouse and officially opened by the then Wansdyke MP, Jack Aspinwall, in the summer of 1990. In recent times, this has undergone refurbishment and, as well as being the centre of the club’s social life, is now shared by Keynsham Hockey Club. To celebrate the centenary, the club will be staging a number of events on top of its normal fixtures. President Derek Joyce said: “This is a landmark in the life of the club and we would like to see as many past players and supporters as possible join us in our programme of special events.” As part of the celebrations, a pavilion “naming ceremony” is due to take place on May 2, the scheduled start of the season, to honour the Trescothick family name, and everyone is welcome to attend. l Keynsham Memories: Page 11

n KEYNSHAM COMMUNITY RESPONSE GROUP

Dame Vera would be proud of our town

I

t’s Dame Vera Lynn at 103 who asked people to respond to the outbreak in the ‘spirit of the Blitz’ and I think she would be proud of the way that Keynsham has come together in a matter of only a few days. On Sunday, I woke up in a bit of a tizz, suddenly realising that many of our local community charities and groups are run by fit and active over-70s and that the Government will be soon asking them to stay at home. “How will we keep the food bank operating? How will Community at 67 keep on providing food and assistance to families?” The answer came quickly when I saw that Clare Hartill Rutz had begun a community Facebook group called Keynsham Coronavirus Covid-19 Support, which was quickly growing in members offering support. Within a few hours, Clare had accepted me as joint administrator of the group along with others and the work began on building lists of helpers. That was a job and a half, and thanks to Clare and Zoe Wilkins, the job of providing volunteers to the food bank and C@67 was complete in a day or two. On Monday night I met with representatives from Churches Together, Keynsham Food Bank, Community at 67, the Covid-19 Facebook page, and the town council, and had a clear picture

at the end of that meeting of what would be in place from their perspective. On Tuesday night, the town council had met and agreed to provide financial and material support to the group. Within the next week or so, we will have allocated street wardens who will knock on each and every door in order to provide their contact details. Those street wardens and volunteers will be able to shop (please make sure you have a good supply of cash only) to pick up prescriptions, to help walk dogs and even to move your bins for you. You can phone them for help, but for everyone’s safety they must not come into your

home, and I cannot emphasise this strongly enough. All of our wardens and volunteers will have a clear protocol of standing back away from the door to have their conversations. Remember - they are volunteers from your street, so treat them kindly and with respect. We reserve the right to withdraw help from those who abuse our volunteers. In addition, we will have a community advice line for calls between 9am and 9pm daily. We can then point people in the right direction for help and we will also have a ‘befriending line’ for those who just need someone to talk with. Thanks to our local churches for that initiative. We are grateful to the town council for its allocation of money and resources to our group. They are paying for the phones and printing that we will we use. They are also giving us advice about data protection and how we can work with our volunteers as safely as possible. This may well be a difficult time for us all, but our group will try its best to provide assistance wherever possible and also soon come up with some community fun projects that we can do even in our houses. KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society THIS photograph is not of the highest quality but is of great interest. Taken on 26th April 1930, it shows the entrance to the Frank Taylor Memorial Cricket Ground on Wellsway at a special event, possibly a prize-giving or to do with the start of the season. As mentioned in our cricket club centenary story on page 9, the ground was purchased in 1927. Beyond the ground are the fields later covered by Chandag Estate, with the site of Welland Road presumably behind the nearest hedgeline. Photo courtesy of Keynsham Cricket Club

Food bank loses its town 'warehouse'

KEYNSHAM Food Bank has been forced to move its ‘warehouse’ out of town. Since opening its distribution centres in 2013, the food bank has been hosted by Broadlands Academy, which has allowed it to store stock in a redundant classroom free of charge. The arrangement had already been put under pressure by a significant increase in demand for the food bank’s services and the need for the school to enforce its safeguarding requirements. But now that the school has been closed because of the coronavirus, the food bank has been forced to seek new premises. A suitable alternative in Keynsham has yet to be found, so the ‘warehouse’ has been temporarily moved to a site in Longwell Green. Food bank chairman and coordinator Alan Hale said: "We are extremely grateful to Broadlands. But the pressures upon us now dictate that we need a more flexible and accessible 'warehouse' unit. “We would love to find something in town, but as yet we have been unsuccessful. “So in the meantime we have had to rent storage accommodation at Lok'nStore in Longwell Green.” Demand on the food bank has risen significantly because of the coronavirus outbreak. Prior to the week beginning March 17, the food bank had this fiscal year fed 1,149 attendees, including 514 children - 50% more than the previous fiscal year. But this last week the team have fed more than 100 people. As some businesses are closing down for the duration of the virus, they have been offering food to the food bank - Priston Mill (due to a cancelled wedding), TK Maxx in Brislington and Home Sense at Hartcliffe, which has given more than 80 large carrier bags full of produce. A local Wetherspoons is also giving a consignment of food. Keynsham Rotary Club has donated the costs of its cancelled dinner meeting to the food bank. Other members of the community have given individual cash donations.

Staff at Home Sense in Hartcliffe with produce that the store donated to Keynsham Food Bank Alan Hale continued: “The local community has been great, and many volunteers have come forward as some of our regular volunteers felt they had to step back because of their age in relation to the virus. “We are hopeful that our move out of town will only be for a short period. “Should any businesses or benefactors feel they can offer us accommodation in Keynsham or are willing to help with sponsorship of our current accommodation to some degree, we would love to hear from them. “In the meantime, I would urge our generous community in Keynsham and Saltford to continue to donate food via the drop boxes at Tesco and Waitrose, because there are so many in food crisis at the moment.” Athough the warehouse has moved, the two distributions in Keynsham and the one in Saltford remain open during their usual hours. The food bank can be contacted on 0117 9837923 or via keynshamfoodbank@ gmail.com. Donations can be made via bank transfer to sort code 60-12-11, account number 26641860.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Let's hope we emerge into a better world

T

he virus that’s sweeping the globe is forcing our society to undergo huge and rapid changes, many of which are already causing suffering and anxiety. The Government has invoked the Blitz spirit, and people around the country are rising to the challenge. When we’ve got the virus under control – which we will – with medicine to treat the sick and vaccines to protect the rest of us, I feel hopeful that we’ll emerge into a better world. I hope that the connections we’ve made with our neighbours in these difficult times will take root and strengthen in Keynsham and all over the UK. We’ll understand more about social isolation and take time to talk to people who live alone in our communities. I hope that we’ll change the way we work. People might realise they’re able to work from

A helping hand can ease the isolation of those who live alone home more often, which will reduce traffic on our roads. Less traffic means less air pollution, fewer people suffering from the debilitating illnesses associated with it, from asthma and COPD to dementia and cancer, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. I hope that we’ll realise we don’t

need so much stuff in our lives. Of course, when this is all over, we’ll need to support businesses, which are suffering so badly, but I hope we’ll be happy with enough instead of more. I hope that businesses – which are turning their production lines over to ventilators, hand gel and

protective clothing – will continue to do the right thing for society as well as for their shareholders, recognising the importance of the health and wellbeing of people and the planet. I hope that we’ll understand that planetary health is inextricably linked to human health. Scientists know that humanity’s destruction of biodiversity creates the conditions for new viruses and diseases like Covid-19 to rise and spread. Let’s all protect the diversity of nature local to us and further afield. I hope that people’s faith in experts is restored, our governments continue to be frank and open with us, and our fractured and polarised country unites. These are my hopes for the future. But for now, my abiding hope is that everyone stays safe and well. Liz Barling

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Children's grim lives in the workhouse

Life in Keynsham Union Workhouse was meant to be grim for the men, women and children who ended up there

K

eynsham Union Workhouse was completed in 1838, sited where the health centre now stands. It was to serve only those who were incapable of working, such as the disabled, abandoned wives, widows and single mothers. Conditions were intended to deter any who could survive outside. Many of the inmates had children. For example, in 1841 new entrants in the three summer months - which were the least busy comprised 45 men, 49 women and 89 children. Once admitted to the workhouse, children were cleaned (probably by bathing) and given the workhouse clothes and boots, with many of the garments being made there. Those over the age of two were housed separately from their mothers, with girls and boys having separate rooms, each containing up to 14 beds, but all slept three to a bed. Even in the sick wards, beds had to be shared. In the boys’ “Itch ward”, they slept two to a bed. The “Itch” was scabies, a common and highly contagious skin disease. Children in the workhouse were given much the same food as the adults, only in smaller

quantities, with a little more milk and water. All inmates had three meals a day: breakfast, dinner and supper. Breakfast was bread, possibly with gruel, plus milk and water. Dinner varied, with meat, potatoes and veg twice a week, bread and cheese twice, vegetable soup one day and suet pudding on Sunday. Supper was always bread and cheese, with more gruel. There was an effort made to provide schooling. The board of guardians advertised for a schoolmistress soon after the workhouse opened. The salary was £20 per annum plus accommodation. It was a very difficult job and several appointees lasted only a year or two. In 1845 the guardians appointed a schoolmaster to teach the boys gardening and field work. Discipline was always a problem as many of the children had run wild all their lives and were very streetwise. Punishments for misbehaviour were confinement or loss of meals. Corporal punishment was not allowed but it certainly took place - on more than one occasion teachers were disciplined for beating their charges. Life in the workhouse was grim: it was

meant to be. But by all accounts, it appears that Keynsham was more humanely administered than the worst of others. Possibly it was better than most. In general, the life chances of these children were poor. “Born in the workhouse, die in the workhouse” was all too often the reality. Discover more local history

Easter fun comes early for children

Pastor Ryan Morton has brought some early Easter cheer to youngsters who attend Elim Church in Keynsham

Registered Charity 202151

A KEYNSHAM church has lifted the spirits of children who were left disappointed by the cancellation of a fun Easter event. Elim Church was forced to scrap the Holiday Bible Club’s Easter special because of the coronavirus. But Pastor Ryan Morton and his wife Sarah decided to bring some light into the children’s lives in these uncertainty times. They delivered 76 Easter eggs, with an activity pack and crayons, to every child who had registered for the Easter event, just to let them know that they cared about the youngsters and that they were not facing these challenges alone. Sarah said: “We had such good feedback from parents emailing in to the church, thanking us for what we've done in such dark times and bringing happiness to their children.” For more information about Elim Church activities, follow the church on Facebook and visit www.keynshamelim.com.

Golfers aid dementia research SALTFORD Golf Club has handed over a “stunning” amount of money to help the fight against dementia. The club raised £15,500 for Alzheimer's Research UK during Marcus Woodward's 2019 captaincy year. The fund was topped up by donations from BOSS (Bandits of Saltford Society) – a group who play at the club on a Saturday and Colin Baker from the Bird in Hand pub Saltford. And Dave Diamond of DS2i Ltd added another £500 to increase the figure to £16,000. The money was handed over to James Warren, regional fundraising officer for the Alzheimer's Research UK charity. He said: “I’m not often left speechless but I will gladly admit to being stunned into silence at the cheque presentation. “Your very generous donation will make a huge impact to the work that we fund. “It is the largest single donation I have received for the charity this year in the South

James Warren, of Alzheimer's Research UK, with Marcus Woodward of Saltford Golf Club West region and the largest single donation from a community group in my three years at Alzheimer’s Research UK. Simply put, it's amazing.” The money will be used for research within the charity’s Bristol and Bath research network. James added: “Raising awareness of what dementia is, how it impacts communities, and our work to find a cure and life-changing treatment is often the biggest challenge we

face as a charity and your club has been extremely receptive to the messages we have put out.” As well as the Alzheimer’s charity, many other good causes benefited from the golf club’s support during the year. James said: “Through this last year with Alzheimer’s Research UK and with your previous birthday events, park runs and marathons, so many people have benefited, and will benefit, from your generosity.”

Health staff need bags of help

Keynsham in Bloom members are being asked to make drawstring bags like these to help health staff

S

adly, like many other organisations and services in the town, Keynsham in Bloom has had to make the decision, for the safety of our members and the wider community, to postpone all planned activities and events. However, we will be working in conjunction with the Keynsham Coronavirus (Covid-19) Support Group on some important and vital projects. Firstly, we are asking members of our community to help our doctors, nurses and health staff at the Royal United Hospital in Bath by making drawstring bags that we can fill with donated soap, shower gel, toothpaste, combs, small packs of wipes, lip salve, tissues packs (small), packets of razors, hand cream, deodorant, bottles water and healthy snack bars. These amazing people are working extremely long hours with very short comfort and rest breaks. After a day in sweaty personal protection equipment, they need to shower and wash thoroughly before leaving for home.

These bags will go a little way to make their lives a bit easier. Please make bags in materials suitable for both male and female staff. If you wish to help and want to get involved with this project, you can do so by either making bags or by donating the items above. Donations of drawstring bags or toiletries can be dropped off to Keynsham Baptist Church on Mondays between 10am and 11am or Thursday between 2pm and 3pm, or at Community at 67. Alternatively, if you need items collecting, email keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or telephone 07399 612317 or 07470 679240. If you are on Facebook, join Keynsham in Bloom or the Keynsham Coronavirus COVID-19 Support Group for details of a lovely children’s ‘grow a salad’ planting activity that we are setting up. Hi-tech eye on risk of flooding A NEW way of measuring the risk of flooding will benefit residents in Keynsham. A solar-powered gauge in the River Chew will mean less reliance on wardens working in difficult conditions. During bad weather, the river has to be visually checked by a volunteer team, often during storms and at night. The wardens protect residents from property flooding, get flood boards up and manage road flooding by putting up signs or barriers. The new gauge means levels can be measured remotely, with alerts being sent out via mobile phones to wardens in Keynsham and villages along the river. It will also help the Environment Agency to act in a timely manner to prevent flooding. An award of £500 towards the cost of the gauge has been made to Chew Magna Parish Council from Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Ward Councillor Empowerment Fund. Councillor Karen Warrington (Chew Valley Ward), who contributed £500 from her ward councillor allocation, said: “This device has been successful on the Winford Brook and so it makes sense to have it for the River Chew.” The Ward Councillor Empowerment Fund has been set up to provide every ward councillor with a one-off sum to help address concerns or needs in their local communities.

Council's grant scheme to go ahead ORGANISATIONS that improve the lives of people in Keynsham will soon be able to apply for grants from the town council. The council has decided to continue the awards process despite the coronavirus. Any charity, voluntary or public-sector organisation working in Keynsham for the benefit of Keynsham residents is entitled to apply from April 1. Application packs will be available from the town council (see details at the end of this article) from Wednesday April 1 to Friday May 1. Council staff can help in the completion of grant application forms if required. The closing date for applications is noon on Friday May 15. This year, the town council will allocate about £20,000 in general grants and £10,000 in grants for environmental and sustainable projects. These will be awarded to support local groups and organisations. Grants of up to £1,000 are available. Councillor Dave Biddleston, chairman of grants committee,

said: “Keynsham has a wealth of community organisations and volunteers providing support and activities for all sections of our community. It was a privilege to make the awards last year.” The council has delayed the decision-making until August, although this may occur earlier if the Government passes legislation allowing councils and committees to meet virtually. The presentation evening has also been put back, from July until October. This will be subject to whatever Government advice on social distancing is operating at the time, and the presentations may also need to happen virtually. l If you think your group might benefit from a grant, contact Dawn Drury, Deputy Town Clerk, by emailing deputytownclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk Methods of contacting the town council – by phone, by post or in person - are being affected by the coronavirus. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Revd Jane Wilson Co-Superintendent Minister, North East Somerset & Bath Methodist Circuit Minister, Keynsham Methodist Church

W

hat’s so good about Good Friday? It’s a reasonable question. After all, Good Friday is the day many Christians remember a man called Jesus - who claimed he was the Son of God - being sentenced to a brutal public execution for crimes he didn’t commit. And this was no ordinary execution: he was nailed to a cross. But while he was dying, he prayed for the people who did this to him: “Father forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing”. Although short, his life is well documented by historians of the time. They recorded that Jesus healed people from their diseases, brought dead people back to life, taught a radical message of peace, love and forgiveness, and told his followers to bless their enemies and to love each other the way he’d loved them.

what Good Friday is all about – a ‘ That’s message from God in Jesus which says: “See

How Much I Love You” – enough to take on my shoulders all the wrong things in this world and give up my life for you, so that you can receive the gift of grace and new life through me.

I remember reading a story about a funeral for a woman who had been married for over 50 years. The note on the flowers from her husband simply said “SHMILY”. When her great-grandson asked his dad what that word meant, his father explained that when he’d been a young boy visiting his grandparents, he would find that word in all sorts of places around the house. Ever since they were first married, his grandparents had played a game which involved writing SHMILY somewhere for the other person to find, whether in the steam on a mirror, or a note on the dashboard, under a pillow or in a shoe. And SHMILY meant: “See How Much I Love You”. For Christians like me, that’s what Good Friday is all about – a message from God in Jesus

which says: “See How Much I Love You” – enough to take on my shoulders all the wrong things in this world and give up my life for you, so that you can receive the gift of grace and new life through me. And the story doesn’t end there. When Jesus’ friends went to the tomb that first Easter morning, they found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Later they saw Jesus, still with the nail marks on his hands and feet, alive. Just as he’d promised. Christians across the world will be celebrating that wonderful, amazing, transformational event that changed history for ever on Easter Sunday. But God’s message remains the same. The message of the cross on Good Friday. The message of the empty tomb on Easter Day. “See How Much I Love You.”

Radio station brings people together A LOCAL radio station has continued to generate a positive response from residents since it started broadcasting at the end of January. KTCRfm is the new local radio station for the Keynsham area and also broadcasts to Saltford, the Chew Valley, North East Somerset, most of South Gloucestershire, as well as Bath and much of Bristol, with a potential audience of almost 100,000. It is a fully Ofcom-licensed FM broadcaster and is available 24 hours a day on 105.8FM. Since January, the station has added a number of programmes to its schedule, all of which are locally based and made by local people, including The Keynsham Hour, which has been broadcast on SomerValley FM for the last five years. Ofcom awarded KTCRfm a broadcast licence following the genuine community participation in The Keynsham Hour. These programmes will be supplemented by a number of others shared with other local radio stations in the region. During March, KTCRfm helped to develop a community response to the coronavirus outbreak with other local groups. It is now broadcasting a Good Morning slot every day at 8am and 9am

detailing news and developments in the local community. Spokesman Ric Davison said: “KTCRfm is run largely by volunteers and is a registered not-for-profit-company. “The station is supported by the National Lottery and a host of local agencies and businesses, including Keynsham Town Council and especially the @One Community Trust and Burnett Business Park, with generous support for the station's studios in Keynsham and transmission installation at Burnett. Others include Smart Computers, IT Solutions Saltford, Truespeed and Jazz Computers. “The station’s income and operating costs will be enhanced by the radio advertising opportunities for local businesses, and a number are already in production. “Local radio is a sure way of helping to alleviate isolation, especially with the elderly confined to their own homes. “Since broadcasting began, local response has been extremely encouraging - and a recent posting on the station's Facebook Page quickly had over 4,000 views.” The station also streams live on the internet. Former head takes on new challenge FORMER Keynsham headteacher Dr Matthew Cottrell, is set to share his knowledge and experience with schools around the region. Dr Cottrell, who was head at St John’s Church of England Primary School from 2006, leading it to two consecutive outstanding Ofsted judgements, will leave Wellsway Multi Academy Trust at the end of April. He has been deputy chief executive of the trust and director of primary for nearly five years and has led the development of its primary phase, which from September will number eight schools. Dr Cottrell is a National Leader of Education and will work as a school improvement consultant and in school inspection, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience more widely. He said: “I have spent almost five hugely enjoyable years working for the trust. During this time the trust has grown and has developed to become an organisation that makes a real difference to pupils’ life chances. “It has been a privilege and an honour to have been part of this exciting process.” Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, said: “Matthew has made a wonderful contribution to education in Keynsham and beyond. Our loss is the wider school community’s gain.”

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

O

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

n Monday March 16, the Prime Minister issued a statement in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. During his speech, Boris Johnson warned the public to avoid non-essential contact and travel to curtail the highly contagious virus. People were advised to work from home where possible, take every precaution when using public transport and stay away from mass gatherings, pubs and restaurants. As the death toll rises, the Prime Minister's seemingly draconian advice is necessary to prevent serious illness and, in some cases, death. Those who would be most detrimentally affected have underlying health conditions or are elderly, and as a nation we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable. This is the worst health crisis to occur in our lifetime but by working together it is surmountable. If you have a cough or temperature, it is imperative to self-isolate and look up the detailed advice on the NHS website. Those who are in the same household should also self-isolate. In response to this global crisis, the Chancellor has unveiled a ÂŁ330 billion package to protect the UK economy and jobs. Some measures include a business

rates 'holiday' for firms with fewer than 250 employees, mortgage support, loans for businesses and the refunding of sick pay for small businesses. This followed the Bank of England's announcement to cut interest rates from 0.75% to 0.25%. In addition, the NHS has cancelled all nonurgent surgery to ensure that more beds are available to those struck down by Covid-19. These are unprecedented times and I understand the worry felt by many, but by following Government guidelines we will emerge stronger and more united. If you need to contact me about any issue, please email jacob.reesmogg.mp@parliament.uk. I am always here to help.

his article was supposed to be about the successful medal tally at Keynsham’s very own annual spring gala, co-hosted with Bristol Olympic Penguin Swimming Club. It was supposed to be telling you about the re-launch of Keynsham Pool, with SiobhanMarie O’Connor at the official reopening. It was supposed to be about the wonderful new blocks that the people and businesses of Keynsham had sponsored. But this is what actually happened … On Wednesday March 18, Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club’s committee held their regular monthly meeting. But it wasn’t the usual affair of members packed in around the dining table at whoever’s turn it was to host. This meeting was held online. The committee, chaired by John Warren, had to make the inevitable decision about how the club should proceed following advice from the Government on social distancing due to Covid-19, and guidance from Swim England, which on Monday had advised against swimming activities. It was with heavy hearts that, like many other sporting organisations, Keynsham decided to suspend training with immediate effect. The club’s young swimmers

Right, Immy V working on her core have had their worlds turned upside down - no school, no exams, no end-of-year proms, no leavers’ services, no clubs, no play dates, no summer holidays away, and no swimming. It’s not just the children that have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the coaches have been volunteering with Keynsham for years, giving up hours of their time. The parents also give up hours of their time driving the swimmers to training and spending whole weekends at galas or volunteering in the supportive roles that keep a

community sports club running. Katy Cripps, prelim squad, said: “Coach and swimmer have been doing a range of core strength exercises tonight. Ben says he is very sad about not seeing his swim friends as they are the best! “I am missing the best team of coaches and the lovely children too. It’s such a pleasure watching them all learn and grow. A big part of our life is missing. Swimming family really sums it up. I am feeling a bit emotional, I do genuinely miss my lovely swim family already.” But this was certainly not going

to stop them training. The club’s land training coach, Mike Uren, will be uploading twice-weekly workouts that the children can do in their own homes, as it’s really important for the swimmers to keep up their strength for the time when they can safely return to the water. Some of the swimmers have been sharing their photos with us. Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club would like to wish all the people, and businesses, of Keynsham well and hope that everyone manages to stay safe in this truly unprecedented time.

he committee of the Keynsham group of the Avon Wildlife Trust engaged in some serious discussions before following Government guidelines in agreeing to go ahead with our March meeting, writes chairman Dave Sage. We were pleased that speaker Colin Butcher was able to come and share his experiences on many small islands around the UK. A computer and software designer by trade, Colin and his wife Pauline have spent many years volunteering and observing wildlife on some unique offshore habitats, often remote, although some quite near to large urban centres. Colin was inspired during his childhood when accompanying his geologist father on field trips, particularly in Scotland. He was taken by the dedication of individuals working to improve habitats for wildlife and facilities for visitors to some areas of outstanding natural beauty and sites of special scientific interest, and resolved that he would join them. Starting on the Island of Llanddwyn, off the coast of Anglesey, Colin worked clockwise around the British Isles and the Channel Islands, systematically comparing his experiences and highlighting what each of the 13 islands has to offer. At less than one square mile, Llanddwyn is a small tidal island teeming with a range of wildlife including a 2,000-plus raven roost, red squirrels and choughs. Colin’s voluntary work included moth trapping, rat monitoring (using humane “footprint” traps;

fortunately for the ground nesting birds, the island is rat-free), bird surveys, path widening and drystone wall repairs. Colin continued northwards, outlining his work on Copeland RSPB reserve (near Belfast), Rathlin (NE Northern Ireland), Ailsa Craig (SW Scotland), Torsa (SW of Oban), Oronsay (Inner Hebrides), Handa (NW Scotland), and Noss (E Shetland). The Scottish islands in particular are dramatic, with steep cliffs formed from the hard igneous rocks that are reminders of past extensive volcanic activity. In addition to the range of practical tasks he impressed us with, the range of seabird life he has experienced and photographed is remarkable. This variety includes storm petrels, Manx shearwaters, black guillemots, arctic terns, razorbills, kittiwakes, oystercatchers, fulmars, puffins, great skuas (“bonxies”), arctic skuas, eider ducks and redthroated divers. He explained that these islands are globally important breeding grounds for many of these species. On Ailsa Craig, an estimated 70,000 gannets nest annually on the sheer cliffs, photographing them from above being an often-precarious occupation! Other notable sightings included hooded crows on Torsa, corncrakes and lapwings

on Oronsay, and rare golden hares on Rathlin. He then worked his way southwards down the east coast of England, all these islands contrasting markedly with those in Scotland, in being low-lying, flat wetlands. Spurn (near Hull) is a good place to spot little terns and roughlegged buzzards; Northey (on the Maldon salt pans in Essex) is notable for rare turtle doves and cheeky turnstones.

Holt island, near St Ives in Cambridgeshire, is not coastal, but on the river Great Ouse. Also inland is Crane Park, near Heathrow, a former gunpowder mill and lead shot tower, now important for rare marsh frogs and a range of damselflies and dragonflies. wo Cubs from Chiltern Pack have received the Chief Scout Silver Award – the highest award a Cub can gain. Emily and Daisy were presented with their awards on Monday March 9 in recognition of their incredible levels of dedication to Scouting. They completed a range of badges for the award – gaining skills and having fun along the way – such as camping, kayaking, survival skills and many more. Daisy reflected: “I’ve enjoyed our camps most of all. I’m really pleased to have achieved the Silver Award and liked working on the range of badges. Thank you to

everyone who has helped me, and I look forward to working on my Gold award when I get to Scouts.” Emily said: “I’ve met so many nice people and learnt lots. The most fun things were on the river run and playing wide games.” The end of March also saw a brilliant weekend at Charterhouse Outdoor Centre in Cheddar, with Scouts getting stuck into outdoor activities such as caving and mountain biking. Three scouts from Chew Troop were asked what they thought. Henry said that “jumping over the abyss [whilst caving] was scary, but really fun.”

Jed commented that “it was really fun using the real mountain bike trails”, and “I didn’t care about all the mud because it was so much fun.” Mitchell said: “I was so tired when I got home but it was definitely worth it!” We hope they all had a great time and didn’t return home too muddy!

A note from us

F

ace-to-face meetings at 1st Keynsham Scouts have been suspended, as have our upcoming fundraisers and the Avon Jamboree. However, we know

this will not dampen our young people’s spirit and enthusiasm – and there’ll be plenty of activities for them to do in the meantime. The leadership team are looking at ways to bring Scouting into homes, whatever people’s situation: keep an eye out for updates. Scouting has always provided a platform for opportunity, fun and adventure, and was first delivered to young people in their homes via the book Scouting for Boys. Scouting has also always been a community, and it will continue to be a community, even in uncertain times. We hope you all take care.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Sculptress Minette Walters This book, published in 1994, has just been reissued, and this edition is a real treat. It begins with a simple fact – Olive Martin murdered her mother and sister. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment, where she spends her days carving miniature human figures out of wax. A struggling author, Rosalind Leigh, is persuaded to research Olive’s story. But as she interviews Olive and investigates her background, she begins to suspect there may have been a huge miscarriage of justice. Olive is a menacing but at times vulnerable character, and her relationship with Rosalind makes the story very gripping. All through the book you are left guessing if Olive is guilty or innocent – in fact, right up to the last page. Well written and pacey, it has made me want to seek out more books by Minette Walters. Adult Non-Fiction

Plants, Beds and Borders Katie Rushworth As Easter approaches, and we hope the weather gets warmer and sunny, why not grab a book to inspire you in the garden? This delightful volume is full of tips and ideas, concentrating on borders and smaller gardens. There are some great ideas for creating a

Mediterranean garden, more formal borders and an urban jungle garden. Each section includes advice on planning your beds or borders, design and plants to get. It’s all set out in clear pictures to help you develop and maintain your garden. A useful and really clever book.

The Family Travel Handbook Lonely Planet reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Lonely Planet strike again with a book that’s quite big (you can’t put in your pocket) to help you plan your family holidays. Like when they produced a special edition about Exploring France, I think this one is to give you tips their usual editions of guidebooks won’t provide. Lonely Planet rarely have tips for families and little ones - here they try to fix this omission by giving you a book entirely on the subject (subtitled ‘everything you need to know to take unforgettable trips with your children’). It could help you find some ideas, plan trips, prepare the right documents, visas and know what to put in your luggage. But what I found lazy is the fact that it is not intended as a guide

for British people. Lonely Planet is an Australia-based guidebook and clearly all the destinations they consider “low budget” are not here in the UK, but there in Australia. Or they’re within their reach, like Hawaii, USA etc. They could have made the effort to do an edition for others countries, but they haven’t seen the purpose of it, and you end up thinking you can’t do anything cheaply because what they suggest is way out of reach. Nice to flick through but I won’t be using their advice when I will plan my next trip. Young Adult Fiction

A Curse So Dark and Lonely Brigid Kemmerer reviewed by one of our younger reviewers, Erin Conlon This is an inventive take on the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. However, more than just a curse stands in the way of happy ever after. For Rhen and Harper, love just isn’t going to make an appearance. Masquerading as a princess of imaginary Disi, Harper must also help Rhen defeat an invasion. The problem is, who will fight when the people are starving? Break a curse. Stop an invasion. Feed a kingdom. Shouldn’t be too hard! Gripping and suspenseful, this is an improvement on the original, and Beauty is no helpless princess!

Sorcery of Thorns Margaret Rogerson reviewed by Erin Conlon Elisabeth’s sworn duty is to protect the powerful Grimoires that dwell in the great libraries, and also to protect everyone else from the Maleficts that Grimoires can become. But her dreams are shattered when her attempt to stop a released Malefict implicates her in the crime. Elisabeth is judged by Sorcerers, her enemies. Caught up in a heinous scheme, how can she stop a plot centuries in the planning? Only Magister Thorn is willing to help, but their trust is rather tenuous. If all fails, the veil between this world and the next will be destroyed and chaos will reign. Sorcery of Thorns is tense and full of plot twists. An enchantment woven to lure you in, then trap you. Bus pass rules lifted to help elderly RESTRICTIONS on concessionary bus passes have been relaxed to enable older and disabled people to shop early during the coronavirus crisis. Holders of the Diamond Travelcard can now travel free at any time on journeys starting in the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and North Somerset areas. Previously, holders of a Diamond Travelcard bus pass for eligible older and disabled people could travel on any local bus for free after 9am Mondays to Fridays and all day at weekends. But WECA has made the change with the support of its constituent councils, Bath

and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire, as well as North Somerset Council and local bus operators, to enable vulnerable groups to access early shopping opportunities. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “I want to make sure that our most vulnerable members of society are still able to get essential supplies. "Our retailers have stepped forward to make sure older and vulnerable people have the opportunity to get what they need and these changes will make sure they can make the most of that opportunity. Of course, we would urge everyone to follow the

Government’s advice and only travel if it is absolutely essential.” Leader of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Toby Savage said: “We are very pleased to be able to extend the hours of the Diamond Travelcard, which will help our older residents get to the local shops for their dedicated early morning shopping times. We all need to pull together to do all we can to help each other at this challenging time, and we will be working closely with WECA and other partners as we work to keep our most vulnerable residents safe and well.” The initiative will be reviewed at the end of June.

Romy salutes bake-off winners CELEBRITY chef and cookery teacher Romy Gill helped judge a bake-off competition for young people. Students from 22 schools took part in the contest, in which participants were asked to design and bake a cake that represented the Cabot Learning Federation's values. The winning cake was created by students from John Cabot Academy in Kingswood and featured rainbow colours to represent LGBTQ+. The runners-up were from Bristol Futures Academy in Barton Hill. Romy Gill, who was owner and head chef

at Romy”s Kitchen in Thornbury, was joined for the judging at Bristol Brunel Academy in Speedwell by the federation’s chief executive Steve Taylor. All the cakes were later sold and raised more than £50 for the CLF’s big trip. Executive principal Kate Richardson, who organised the event, said: “The judges were most impressed by the way the students made decisions about what to bake by incorporating our values of high expectations, equity, all children achieving, resilience and tolerance.”

Keynsham end curtailed season on a high

Keynsham were solid, left and above, in beating Crediton KEYNSHAM welcomed Crediton to Crown Fields off the back of a recent show of good form, having won the previous three games. The reverse fixture before the new year saw Keynsham lose 17-8 to the Devonians in an under-par performance. However, the home side started strongly and throughout the game were the better side, with dominance in the contact area and a strong defence. A solid performance saw the home side rack up their fourth successive win with a 25-13 victory. It was a short week until Keynsham’s next fixture, home to local rivals Cleve in a highly

anticipated Friday night lights contest. An army of club volunteers consisting of players past and present worked hard before the game to prepare the pitch after the recent heavy rain. In what was a tense affair throughout, Keynsham played the conditions more effectively. The home side’s kick chase put the visitors under immense pressure and, in a highly physical encounter, this was vital in gaining important field possession. Cleve battled hard and their backs showed glimpses of their attacking prowess, but Keynsham’s cover defence played its part and, as the away side tired both mentally and physically, the home side peaked as the game neared its end with a final result of 28-13. Following Government advice concerning the coronavirus outbreak, the RFU took the unprecedented decision to cancel all rugby below the Premiership. It is still unknown what the ramifications will be regarding promotion and relegation, but it is near certain that Keynsham will again ply their trade in Tribute South West One West next season, having finished a respectable 8th with a total of 52 points.

n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Ups and downs for Ks in close contests

KEYNSHAM Town enjoyed mixed fortunes in March before matches were suspended due to the coronavirus. First there was a trip to Roman Glass St George on their 3G pitch. The play was typical Western league football - end to end, very competitive and entertaining. Keynsham probably had the better of the early chances, but it was St George who opened the scoring on 18 minutes. A long ball beat the Keynsham defence and the St George no 9 ran on to beat advancing keeper Ash Clark. Keynsham hit back within a minute, when a corner was powerfully headed home by Mike Grist. Then disaster struck on 33 minutes. Another through ball stretched the Ks’ defence and Jordan Anstey brought down a St George player. A red card was inevitable as he was the last man, although luckily the foul took place outside of the box and the resulting free kick was cleared. Scott Saunders took Jordan’s place in the back four and Matt Brown played a deeper role, leaving Troy Walters as the lone striker. St George fought hard to make their

numerical superiority tell, and only a string of first-class saves from Ash Clarke kept Keynsham level at half-time. Play was fairly even after the interval, although Ash Clark made more great saves and Keynsham were lucky to see a St George shot rebound off the post with Clark beaten. As 90 minutes approached, it looked like Keynsham would take a well-earned point. But on 94 minutes, the St George no 14 shot from a crowded penalty area and the ball glanced off the post into the net, making it 2-1. Next, Keynsham entertained newly promoted Street and, as expected, the match was an even affair. The home side took the lead after 25 minutes, when Mike Grist headed Harley Purnell’s in-swinging corner across goal for Troy Walters to nod home. Keynsham made most of the attacking moves towards the end of the first period but failed to increase their lead. In fact, Ash Clark was called upon to block a shot from Sam Smith on 45 minutes to keep the Ks in front. After the restart, Keynsham went close when Matt Brown had a shot saved, then Troy Walters put a ball across the face of the

goal with which Jamie Noble just failed to connect. After 60 minutes, Keynsham made a double substitution, with Stef Lee and Craig Wilson replacing Troy Walters and Jamie Noble. Immediately after this move, Street equalised when their number 17 flicked it past Ash Clark. Disappointment was short-lived for the home fans when referee Richard Lawrence awarded Keynsham a penalty for what looked like an innocuous tackle on Matt Brown. But Mike Grist, who up until then had had a great game, shot too tamely, allowing Liam Norris to save. Keynsham refused to be unsettled, kept pushing forward and forced several corners. Eventually Harley Purnell took one that resulted in a similar goal to their first, with the ball being headed back from the far post for Craig Wilson to nod in from short range. Street came more into the match following this setback, but the Keynsham defence stood firm, ably led by example by Mike Grist, to secure a 2-1 victory. MIKE SLUCUTT

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

Green is looking good for our eventual return THE bowling green in Keynsham Park has recovered from last season’s matches and is looking a rich green in colour. Greens manager Derek Packer said: “Just a bit of sunshine is what is now needed, and we will have a good playing surface for this season”. Early in March, members gathered at the clubhouse to sign on for the new season and collect their fixture book, which showed the games for the next six months. The lists were up on the board to allow members to sign

up for the first series of matches so that the selectors could pick the teams. Everyone was looking forward to a new season of bowling on the green. Then coronavirus hit us and all of our planning was destroyed. Members had enjoyed a curry evening in February and were looking forward to an evening with violinist Lizz Lipscombe in March. This had to be cancelled, along with the regular monthly coffee mornings, and all fixtures have been cancelled for an

indefinite period. Many of our members are now “confined to barracks” having followed Government recommendations to self-isolate. Secretary David Hockney is sending out regular newsletters giving information from Bowls England and tips on how to look after ourselves. None of us, of course, know when we will be allowed to start bowling, but as soon as we “get the nod” we will be out on the green immediately to get on with our lives – that’s the generation we belong to!
