As previously reported in the Voice, members of Bath &

for specific hours during the day as part of social-distancing measures. Councillors voted 12 to one in favour of the road closure with two abstentions, and following this, B&NES council introduced the measures on July 13. Turn to Page 2

Complaints Despite our best efforts, we sometimes get things wrong. We always try to resolve issues informally at first but we also have a formal complaints procedure. If you have a complaint about anything in Keynshamvoice, contact the publisher using the details below. We aspire to follow the Code of Conduct of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), which holds journalists to a high standard of behaviour.

From Page 1 The road is currently closed to vehicles between 9am and 5pm every day, except for Dial-aRide access. Cyclists are able to use the road in both directions at all times, and the bus stop on the High Street has been temporarily relocated to Ashton Way. The road closure will remain in place for as long as social distancing is necessary. B&NES has introduced similar road closures in parts of Bath. Councillor Neil Butters, B&NES joint cabinet member for transport services, said: “It’s really important we hear what people think of the changes that have been made. Have they been effective? Do they make you feel safer? Have they improved your experience of visiting our High Streets? “As we recover from the impacts of Covid-19, we have a once-in-a-generation chance to develop long-term sustainable changes to the way we travel. By letting us know your views on the temporary measures we’ve introduced, you’ll help to inform our future plans aimed at solving traffic and environmental problems.” Local councillors have also shared their views on the measures with the Voice. Vic Clarke, for Keynsham North ward, has spoken with shoppers and retailers in the High Street to gauge their views. He said: “Generally speaking, it should be said that it is difficult to objectively judge the impact at this stage, because the pandemic’s course is still

unknown and the compulsory wearing of face masks may be deterring some people from shopping whilst encouraging others to do so. “The views of the shoppers I spoke to was mixed. Some were vehemently opposed to closure whilst others thought it was a good idea, and some didn’t mind either way. “Some retailers said that closure had had little impact on footfall while some had noticed a definite drop in takings, and several spoke of difficulties with deliveries to their outlets. “It is clear to me that all retailers should be given the opportunity to formally state their views and concerns and that this ‘temporary’ closure should not be allowed to drag on without being assessed objectively. “Other anecdotal points that have been made to me include the observation that the High Street is not particularly busy, that most people stick to the pavements and only use the road to cross to the other side, and that some cyclists speed through the street without any thought for the pedestrians. “I had three separate reports of cyclists coming close to knocking over pedestrian and one cyclist being abusive when asked to slow down.” Lisa O’Brien, B&NES ward councillor for Keynsham South, said: “Disabled blue badge holders who can no longer access the High Street easily are in effect being prevented from doing so.

Further details of the complaints process can be found on the Voice website, or can be obtained by contacting the Publisher. DHP, HPD, MNCH(REG), AfSFH

temporary traffic ban in High Street

The traffic measures in the High Street are designed to enable social distancing for shoppers “The substitute temporary bays outside the Fear Institute are not well marked, too small and located badly. This is discriminatory action against disabled people. “Retailers are struggling anyway. Road traffic at times gets clogged. Businesses are having difficulty receiving deliveries. “The justification that is helping social distancing and encouraging visitors isn’t valid. “Walking into the ‘space’ necessitates using narrow pavements to get there. This bad experiment should be stopped. “I have also received feedback from anxious parents who insist on their children staying on the pavement rather than wander across the road, as the mixed messages of ‘you can walk around in the middle of this road but can’t do the same elsewhere’

is hugely confusing for a child. They fear bad habits could be created.” Residents have also taken to the Keynsham Voice Facebook page to air their views. Comments included: “Move the giant concrete flower pots. Stop High Street parking and possibly increase pavement width by a meter to allow adequate walking areas and traffic to access the High Street.” Another stated: “Why can’t they just leave things alone? Keynsham is hard enough for people getting to work and back as it is.” Residents can give their feedback on the changes via the Space to Move website at http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ spacetomove. Created by Sustrans, the website helps local authorities

evaluate the effectiveness of the changes made to enable people to walk and cycle safely during lockdown and beyond. B&NES is also asking residents to share their views on

the measures with Keynsham town councillors, and is keen for residents to get involved in its longer-term Liveable Neighbourhoods project, which aims to encourage a long-term shift in the way people travel and take pressure off the roads and public transport network. It wants to encourage people to walk and cycle more by making it easier to get around, while continuing to support those who depend on their vehicle for mobility. Any ideas submitted that are taken forward will be subject to further public engagement, and if new permanent traffic restrictions are identified, they will involve a formal consultation process. Foodbank helpers busy on the road KEYNSHAM Foodbank volunteers have been out and about helping to prevent people from going hungry. They have been busy delivering food parcels throughout the area, but from September 3 the foodbank will be open to the public at the following places: St Francis Church on Thursdays at 10.00am, Victoria Key Centre on Mondays at 10.30am, and St Mary’s in Saltford at 10.30am. Customers should make sure they know the code number the issuing agency has given them for their e-voucher, as they will be asked for it. So far from April this year, the foodbank has fed 1,190 people, including 588 children. This is a huge increase from the last fiscal year, during which 1,290 people were fed in the whole 12 months. The foodbank currently has enough milk, pasta, beans and soup

but is looking for personal hygiene products and cleaning products. Items are donated via drop boxes in Tesco and Waitrose in Keynsham, as well as drop boxes in Saltford. Shoppers are requested to check the white board next to each drop box to see updated requirements. The foodbank is due to take tenancy of a new warehouse unit soon and hopes to attract financial support from the communities and other benefactors. If you can help, its account is with NatWest in the name of Keynsham Food Bank, sort code 60-12-11, account number 26641860. Facelift for popular play area

MAJOR improvements at Kelston Road Park in Keynsham are due to begin in September. The work is part of a £100,000 investment by Bath & North East Somerset Council and the town council. The final design has been published and includes junior and toddler play zones, accessible equipment, swings and climbing apparatus. Visitors will also benefit from better seating and tree planting in the complete overhaul of the park, next to St Keyna Primary School. Signs are being installed showing the new design and informing residents of the play area closure while the improvements are carried out. The project is a result of a consultation carried out in 2019 which highlighted that play improvements were the top priority for the park, alongside better seating, signage and safety measures. The current play

equipment was installed about 30 years ago and is reaching the end of its life. A children’s survey led by the Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan and supported by the town council showed that Kelston Road is among the most popular play areas for local children and that swings are

the most popular pieces of play equipment, followed by all types of climbing equipment. The work is expected to begin in September and will take six weeks to complete. For more information about the project, visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/kelstonroadpark

Anxious time for pets

T

he last few months have been stressful for both people and animals. When our schedules change such as with lockdown – homeworking, furloughs and going back to work - pets can feel insecure. They can experience separation anxiety as well as anxiety secondary to changes in family dynamics, including a new baby, someone going off to university, changes in jobs, and moving house. Other things that can cause stress and anxiety in our pets include thunderstorms, fireworks, construction going on in or outside the home, other animals in the neighbourhood, death in the family and changes in food. Animals crave a routine, and when their routine is disrupted they can become stressed and anxious. How do animals show stress? Dogs may become destructive to furniture and things around the house, they may bark or howl incessantly, and they may urinate or defecate in unusual places. Cats can have accidents around the house as well. Pets may pace or hide or just not seem themselves. So what can we do to help? First, it is important not to punish your pet for the above behaviours. This will only stress them further. Secondly, having a set routine even when things are a bit abnormal is helpful. Getting up at the same times, walking dogs or letting out cats on a regular schedule, and feeding at the same times all help to make animals feel more secure. Also, even if you are home more, it is good to make sure your pets have some alone time with toys or bedding or other things that make them feel safe and entertained. There are several medications that can be used along with behaviour modification to help overcome separation anxiety and other stresses that our pets experience. We can also refer to a trained veterinary behaviourist if problems are serious. The best thing to do is set up an appointment with your veterinarian if you feel that your pet is stressed so they can help you to help your pet overcome their anxiety. Kristine Clark DVM, MRCVS

Drivers slammed over litter A RESIDENT has called for a national campaign against litter after years of cleaning up the rubbish dropped by motorists. The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I live in Chewton Keynsham and regularly do a litter-pick from Wellsway down to my house. “I have done so weekly for years and am shocked and disgusted by the amount of rubbish that is thrown out of vehicles as people drive through the village. “I realise we are not alone. In fact, I believe Bristol and the surroundings to be one of the dirtiest places in the country. “So I would like to send out this short but clear message: Now we have taught them how to wash their hands, can we teach them how to use a litter bin?” The resident said she fills a bag every week, picking up everything from fast-food containers, takeaway coffee cups, cigarette packets and sweet papers, to small gas cylinders, dirty underwear, disposable gloves and masks, dog poo bags and, on one occasion, an empty cash tin. She said: “Here in the village we have tried everything. We have put out bins for the public which we empty ourselves and we have put up signs - all to no avail. The trash comes out of vehicles as they pass through. “We live in a beautiful country and it's made ugly by litterers and fly-tippers. I think we need a national campaign to push the message home. How can we begin to save the planet when we can't even keep our own backyard clean?”

ON THE BEAT

It's been a steep learning curve for us all

W

hat a difference a few months make. The last time I wrote for the Voice, the world was normal – well, as normal as it can be. The question is, what have we been up to during this time? For the police it has been, up to a point, business as usual. At least, that’s how it is meant to appear. But from the inside looking out, it has been a vast learning curve about changing our ways of working, dealing with the evolving challenges and, most of all, offering a continued level of support and professionalism. So what changed, as with other organisations shielding from Covid-19, was the need to adapt to working from home. We are not just the face you see on the street - there is a large number of police officers and police staff who support us in our job. Also, like everyone else, we had to deal with a shortage of staff due to illness, and we are currently undergoing the Covid-19 antibody tests to see how many of us have

with PC James Evans been affected. Of course, we are not immune to the government’s guidelines, but when you have to crew a car as a pair and arrest violent offenders, common sense has to take over. I think we have adapted well to the sanctions that were put in place to help slow the spread of the infection, dealing with hundreds of reports of breaches in a timely and measured approach. But what else has been going on? Well, overdue thanks must be offered to members of the public who helped me, just as Covid-19 became public, when I was

Got News? Keynsham 21435 ABF Ad HalfCall Page 180x120 AW.indd 1 Voice on 0117 9082121

involved in a pursuit with a stolen car taken from a burglary. The vehicle was followed into Saltford High Street, where it crashed. I was then supported by local residents who helped me detain the two occupants, and I thank them for their assistance. At that time, we also had a number of thefts from gardens, of items ranging from ornate birdbaths to plants and tools. I am pleased to report that, following our investigation, these items were located and the offenders brought to justice. n With the guidelines came the restrictions. And when these were relaxed, the hot weather attracted thousands to Meads Lane, advertised as one of the few ‘safe swimming sites’. This raised a massive public safety concern for us, and we were lucky we didn’t have an emergency, as there is no way any of the emergency services would have been able to respond effectively. This has in turn led to the closing of the local road network and the

removal of parking at this location. We are working closely with the council to try to implement a longterm solution. Please bear in mind that a number of swimmers have died at this location in the past and I urge you to only swim there with caution. n More recently, we have seen the High Street be pedestrianised during the day. Love it or hate it, it has been done with your safety in mind, but this route is still open to cyclists, so please still pay attention when crossing the road. n We continue to suffer with garage break-ins, with thieves targeting expensive bicycles, so please review your security, make sure you are fully insured and, if you see or hear anything suspicious, call us - don’t rely on others to do it. n The Chocolate Quarter has suffered recently with antisocial behaviour. We are looking at our patrol plans to combat this. Again, if something is going on, please report it so we can attend and deal with offenders.

Changes for bus services

Mental health support

PEOPLE across the South West now have access to dedicated 24/7 NHS mental health crisis helplines, to ensure everyone can get the urgent care they need during the global pandemic. Although part of the existing NHS Long-term Plan, universal coverage has been brought forward to help people cope with the impact of coronavirus. Mental health teams across the South West have worked hard to accelerate rollout of the service. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can now call their local helpline at any time, while friends and family members can call on behalf of someone they’re worried about. The lines are also open to professionals such as police and paramedics who may come across people experiencing mental ill health. Anyone can find details of their local helpline through a new service-finder on the NHS website at https://www.nhs. uk/using-the-nhs/nhs-services/ mental-health-services/ dealing-with-a-mental-healthcrisis-or-emergency/ Just type in your postcode or home town in the same way you would search for a local GP or pharmacist. The new helplines are led by mental health professionals who can refer people to local urgent, acute and routine mental health services.

They spent a Sunday picking up rubbish in the Memorial Park, Avon Mill Lane, Station Road and the High Street. Members Imogen Ellis, Jake Smith and Alex Beaumont, along with mentors Caitlin Brenan and Andy Wait, filled several large bags, recycling as they went. Alex said: “We live in a great town, and judging from what we collected, it isn’t only young people who drop litter.” KeynshamNow is the town’s youth council. NEW timetables and minor route changes have been introduced to bus services between Keynsham and Bristol. l A Saturday service has been reinstated to route 349 (Bristol Bus Station – Keynsham) to run every 30 minutes during the main part of the day, as more customers start to travel by bus at the weekend. l On Service 17 (Southmead HospitalKeynsham), the route through Keynsham sees some minor route changes due to new socialdistancing measures in the town. There are also new timetables for customers travelling between Bristol and Bath on the newly branded Aquae route: l On the Aquae route services X39 (BathBristol direct) and 39 (via Keynsham) the frequency of buses increases to every 12 minutes for off-peak journeys Monday to Friday, to match the peak-journey timetable during the week. l The weekend service between Bristol and Bath now changes from Service 39 (Bath – Bristol via Keynsham) to Service X39, which runs direct between Bristol and Bath. This service will operate every 15 minutes on Saturday and Sunday, with slightly reduced operating hours on the Sunday timetable. Customers wishing to travel between Bristol and Keynsham on Saturday can use Service 349 between Bristol Bus Station and Keynsham, which will now run every 30 minutes on a new Saturday timetable. l Service 37 (Bristol-Hanham-Bath) continues to be suspended. Services 19 (Bath-Cribbs Causeway), X39 (Bath-Bristol direct), 44 (City Centre-Cadbury Heath via Hanham Common) and 45 (City Centre-Cadbury Heath via Hanham) provide alternatives for customers travelling on this route. These changes came into force on August 2. For more information and updates, visit the First West of England website at www. firstgroup.com/coronaviruswoe

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES

The Old Court House on Bath Hill was one of Keynsham’s oldest buildings, with parts believed to date from the early 17th century. It used to contain a court room and was at various times a police station and factory for making ladies’ garters. It fell into disrepair and was demolished in November 1977, shortly after being granted listed building status. The shed to the right was a workshop about which we have little information. T’S hard to believe that lockdown began only four months ago. Numerous changes have swept the country, and people have had to adapt like never before in living memory. But amongst the trials and tribulations, a sense of community has prevailed in Keynsham. Town councillor David Biddlestone is thrilled at the way people in the area have responded. “When I heard that those over 70 were going to have to shield, I thought we should set up a website or group to get volunteers together to help them with shopping and things. But when I looked into it, it turned out Clare Hartill Rutz had already set one up! “So, we had a quick phone call, and Clare was looking for volunteers. And a meeting was held every Monday for over two months of lockdown, so volunteers could coordinate what was needed by the community. “We set up a helpline that people could call to get information, and to let us know what they needed,” says David. “We initially kept it open 12 hours a day, from 9am until 9pm, but now lockdown has eased a little, we’re running it from 9-5.” One of the group’s projects was to make sure that anybody in Keynsham who needed some extra help with food got it. “Community @67 had a kitchen and we prepared frozen food for those that needed it, and our volunteers shipped it out. “Another great charity, Community Fridge, very kindly let us use their fridge, and B&NES Council very kindly gave us The Old Pom as a base of operations. “Every day we’re making up six to 11 trays of FareShare produce, which goes out to vulnerable people in Keynsham. a lifeline in lockdown intercept perfectly good food that’s left over from supermarkets and would otherwise go to waste.” The group also worked with community transport service Dial-a-Ride to pick up and deliver prescriptions to those who were shielding. “We worked with every chemist in Keynsham and we did every prescription that needed collecting and delivering, and we got all that under way in under two weeks.” The community deserves a huge thank-you, says David. “The volunteers, these individuals, have worked so hard. I really hope we can get everyone together when it’s safe to do so, have a big party, and meet everyone face-to-face. Everyone has been marvellous.” Another big thank-you is due to those in Broadlands Avenue and the local businesses, says long-time Keynsham resident Mrs Marsh. “A lady called Sharon who lives up the road has been absolutely brilliant,” says Mrs Marsh. “She put information through the letterbox that let us know where we could get help with different things. "Another lady in the road, Joanne, has been ever so good, and a chap across the road from us, John, did a small supermarket order online for me. Everyone has been wonderful.” Mrs Marsh has also been helped by two daughters who live relatively close by, but “they’re not on the doorstep, so it’s nice to have that in the neighbourhood.” Mrs Marsh has had to isolate throughout lockdown because of her husband’s health and has only started going out in the last three weeks. “I had run out of things to read, so I rang Church’s Newsagent. I asked if they could bring me a magazine, a Western Daily Press and a Sunday paper, and they delivered it all –

they were fantastic. Everyone has been really lovely. “We’re the oldest in the avenue, and we’ve had lots of people asking if we’re all right, and checking we have everything we need. There’s such a community spirit, and we’ve been well looked after. I really would like to say a big thank-you to everyone.” Now that lockdown is easing, Mrs Marsh is enjoying getting out again and visiting the local businesses that have been so helpful. “My husband and I plan to go to the Crown pub when they’re able to run as a pub again – they’ve turned into a mini market and have been delivering orders during lockdown. But once they’re open as normal, we’ll go down for a meal to say thank-you for all the help they’ve given us – their fish and chips are unbelievable!” Mrs Marsh says the camaraderie she’s felt in Keynsham during the pandemic reminds her of the Blitz spirit. “It really takes me back to being a young girl,” she says. Although nobody is sure when lockdown will be fully over, Mrs Marsh is confident that Keynsham’s community spirit is here to stay. “The important thing now is to keep looking after ourselves and, of course, each other.”

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Where we lead, government must follow

L

AST month I wrote about the appetite for a green-led recovery post-coronavirus. Since then, I’ve been disappointed by the government’s green recovery plans. The Chancellor’s £3bn of ‘green spending’ is peanuts compared to the billions in bailouts and funding promised to airlines, carmakers and fossil fuel industries. Climate action group Plan B is taking the government to court over its ‘inadequate’ and ‘clearly unlawful’ plans in light of the UK’s obligations to reduce emissions. I’m disappointed, but not despondent. There’s a long history of governments lagging behind public opinion, and many thousands of us have made sustainable lifestyle changes during lockdown. In a completely unscientific poll, I asked a random selection of people what changes they’ve made and intend to keep. They fell into four categories.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced £3bn of 'green spending' as part of the government's plan for recovery after the coronavirus Photo: gov.uk The first was transport – we’re swapping our cars for electric or ditching them in favour of walking or cycling to work or for pleasure. Secondly, at home, we’ve turned our attention to being greener. People have swapped to chemical-free cleaning products and washable dishcloths, nappies and sanitary pads. En masse we’re baking bread, having milk delivered in glass bottles, growing

fruit and vegetables and cooking from scratch. The third category was work/life balance and technology. More of us are using technology to attend work and community meetings, saving time and money and cutting down on polluting journeys. A lot of people I spoke to are exercising more and eating better. And with more time on our hands, we’re remembering how to live at a

slower pace. As one friend said, “it’s reminded me how important the simple things in life are.” Finally, many people told me how important nature has become to them. This cuts across everything else – when we walk or cycle, or exercise outside, we notice nature around us. When we tend our gardens, we support nature. When we spend time at home, we appreciate nature. All this is good for our mental and physical health, and good for the planet’s health too. I believe these changes are lasting and impactful. Each individual act adds up to a critical mass that supports a greener world. And although the government’s a laggard, I am optimistic that it’ll catch up with the rest of us – the people it serves. I just hope it’s sooner rather than later. LIZ BARLING

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Helping those worst affected by pandemic AS we navigate our way through the recovery phase of lockdown, I want to ensure support and help is available to the people and communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic. I have relaunched the Commissioner’s Community Action Fund (CCAF) and I will be offering an additional £200,000 to support charities, voluntary organisations and groups helping to deal with the consequences of the global health emergency. Such initiatives across Avon and Somerset can apply for grants up to £5,000. The extra funding will continue to strengthen those hard-working and courageous organisations who have been a lifeline to local people during these challenging times. By working together we can continue to make improvements in our communities. The CCAF application process is easy and straightforward. Please remember that we want

to say yes to as many of these initiatives as much as possible. More information can be found on my website, www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk. I’m sure many of us are aware that local people living in domestic abuse environments have been more vulnerable and at risk due to the lockdown. My team and I have secured over £500,000 of additional funding for 17 local support services who help victims and survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. This funding will help to cover organisations’ losses and costs incurred, following both adapting and increasing these services during the pandemic. The extra funding will also strengthen local support services’ response to any change in demand as life starts to return to some sort of ‘normal’. We will continue to work with our partners to ensure victims and survivors

know help is out there. There are many stereotypes surrounding domestic abuse that still need to be broken, including men only being perpetrators, women only being victims and domestic violence only taking place in spousal relationships. This is not the case. One type of domestic abuse that is not spoken about enough is child-toparent abuse (CPA). Since 2010, there has been an increase in CPA reports across the country and it is likely we will see a spike in such abuse as a result of lockdown. I want to reach out to these victims and survivors and say you are not alone and you do not need to suffer in silence. I know many victims feel too fearful and ashamed to come forward, as they do not want to get their loved ones in trouble, but I cannot stress enough that help is out there. You do not need to report to the police to access help, and support services will

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens work with you to reach the best outcome for you and your family. For more information about help available, please visit www. thisisnotanexcuse.org In these uncertain times, let’s all be cautious, act with common sense but still show compassion towards one another. Stay safe.

he Government has announced that those arriving from Spain to the United Kingdom will, upon arrival, have to quarantine for 14 days with immediate effect. In an interview with Sky News, the Foreign Secretary explained that the Government took the necessary measures to protect the UK after the Prime Minister and his senior advisers received crucial data about surges of coronavirus in Spain. In a statement defending the 14-day quarantine, the Premier forewarned that there are signs of a "second wave" of Covid-19 across Europe, saying that the decision taken by the Government had to be "swift" and further action would be taken "where it is necessary". Until further notice, the Foreign Office is advising against all non-essential travel to Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands. Whilst the act of removing Spain from the UK's 'exempt list' may seem draconian, I believe that Boris Johnson is correct to move quickly on this issue. The recent spikes in Spain are currently contained to Aragon and Catalonia but the increase in transmission rates has been acute, a reminder of how easily and rapidly this disease can spread.

It would not only be an enormous shame to undo the hard work that we have achieved through lockdown and beyond, but it would also be irresponsible of the Government to have access to such information and ignore it. As we have seen, the results can be fatal. The Government continues to observe the situation in Spain and will amend its guidance accordingly. In the meantime, it has added Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia and St Vincent and the Grenadines to the list of countries which qualify for exemption, showing that it is willing to move forward, albeit in a reassuringly cautious manner. long time ago the scholarly monk Bede wrote the first history of England from his Tyneside monastery, completed in the year 731. He tells many a good story, and many are about how our country became Christian. The Northumbrian Saxon King Edwin was once in a quandary, not knowing whether to embrace the new Christian faith or not. One of his advisors took a homely illustration and said: “The present life of man upon earth, O King, seems to me in comparison with that time which is unknown to us like the swift flight of a sparrow through the mead-hall where you sit at supper in winter, with your thanes and counsellors, while the fire blazes in the midst and the hall is warmed, but the wintry storms of rain or snow are raging abroad. “The sparrow flies in at one door and immediately out at another. Therefore, if this new teaching can reveal any more certain knowledge, it seems only right we should follow it.” The last few months of the Covid-19 pandemic have revealed many things: the cohesion of our community, the value of those who work in the care sector and NHS, and also that we are mortal beings. This disease, if we catch it, may kill us. Such a thought is frightening, and it is therefore not surprising if dying is assumed to be an utter disaster. What could be worse? However, the lively sparrow in the Saxon

illustration implies an existence beyond the mead-hall, a life beyond death, and because the teachers of the Christian faith filled the hearts of King Edwin and his court with the happy news of the onward flight of the sparrow as being glorious in the joyful light and warmth of heaven, they became Christians. The good news is the same for us. Whether we may be fortunate enough to glimpse the light of heaven straying through the universal exit doorway from time to time, or whether we may trust in the Christian faith’s hope of heaven, all of us can easily imagine that the life to come is like a migration to eternal summer, a leaving behind of winter (to extend the Saxon illustration). As a very ancient writer put it: “In eyes of the unwise their going looks like disaster, their leaving us an annihilation, but they are in the place of peace.”

The first evening challenged 15 Scouts from across the troops to take part in backwoods cooking: roasting marshmallows and making stew-based food parcels that cooked on the embers of a fire. The following Saturday also saw 30 more Scouts return to Chelwood, where they managed to cook over open fires and avoided most of the rain. Now that the trial has been a success, the upcoming weeks will see plenty of exciting outdoor activities for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, most likely alongside the virtual meetings we’ve grown used to. A

S Covid-19 lockdown continues, AWT local group members have continued with local walks and plenty of wildlife sightings, writes chairman Dave Sage. I’ve had numerous walks around Stockwood Vale, the many highlights including willow warbler, blackcap and garden warbler singing, buzzards, kestrels and ravens. Since June, the ungrazed meadows have been colourful with dozens of plants, notably bird’s foot trefoil, agrimony, lady’s bedstraw, bath asparagus (our local speciality) and the dandelion-like hawksbeard, with its beautiful “clocks” of parachute-like seeds. I have been fortunate to be able to visit many other locations in the Keynsham area. Charlton Fields, at the top of Charlton Road, is a great place to photograph whitethroats, migrants returning from West Africa, and to learn their scratchy, hurried warble; as well as linnets and skylarks. The much shyer lesser whitethroat (migrants returning from East Africa; incredible how these two species converge on Keynsham from starting points thousands of miles apart) has eluded me all summer, apart from one calling while well hidden in a bush near Chelwood. The walk upstream alongside the river Chew between Dapp’s Hill Bridge and Chewton Place is always a delight. A good walk to see kingfishers (albeit a brief blue-andorange flash downstream), herons, grey wagtails and moorhens. There have been reliable sightings of otters in the Chew and – remarkably – a capybara (the world’s largest rodent and a native of South America); presumably

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group escaped from captivity? Highlight for me was my first ever Keynsham sighting of the magnificent red kite, a species spreading widely from its stronghold in central Wales. Other members have been observing wildlife in their gardens and around Keynsham. Liz Wintle, our field outings organiser, has continued to monitor wildlife in Keynsham Park. Accompanied by her dog, Morris, her latest report informed us that some of the plants that gardeners classify as "weeds" were thriving, much to the appreciation of all the local pollinators that rely on them. In her opinion the most important one is the common (stinging) nettle, which is the main food plant of many different butterfly caterpillars, including tortoiseshell and red admiral. The flowers of the bramble were buzzing with assorted bees, flies and other insects, while hedge bindweed was inviting pollinators with its wide-open white flowers. Liz has shown that you don’t need to walk far to experience an abundance of wildlife. Rita Andrews has taken some excellent macro photos from her garden, including aphids on a rosebud, a crab spider on a sycamore leaf and a beautiful mint moth, as well as superb purple stamens on a Hebe shrub. Cynthia Wilson reports a rabbit grazing in her front garden, sparrows eating her spinach,

We don’t regard any of these as pests, just native wildlife enjoying the fruits of our gardens. Our biggest contributor from

the local group is Andrew Harrison, who has regularly sent us reports and photos. The long list includes several birds and insects, notably the scarlet tiger moth, marbled white and large skipper butterflies - and that capybara!

Finally, supporter Kathleen Hovland reports counting eight bats swooping one after the other into hornbeams and maple near Manor Road community woodland, an unusually high density. If you feel inspired by these sightings, visit our new website

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The King's List Peter Ransley reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library Assistant After Oliver Cromwell’s death in 1659, the ruling of England has reverted to a Royal after the return of King Charles II. The people responsible for the public execution of his father, King Charles I, are now on a list. Those named are to be partially hanged, drawn and quartered. Sir Thomas Stonehouse has enjoyed the privileges that went with being an important member of the Parliamentary rule after humble beginnings as a printer’s apprentice. His father, Richard, being a Royalist supporter, went into exile, but he has now returned to take back his property and assets, the ones Sir Thomas’s wife coveted and made her own. Sir Thomas’s son, Luke, is a Royalist too and had joined a group who had been meeting in secret waiting for the king’s return. He warns Sir Thomas that his life is in danger and he should be careful who he trusts. Sir Thomas is on the King’s List. He wonders if his wife and son would have helped him as much if they knew about his illegitimate son from a past relationship. With the help of his Civil War friend, Scogman, he sets off to escape his fate. Although a work of fiction, this book tells the story of the

consequences faced by the followers of Republic-run England and is a social history of the times. As part of your library membership, and through the free app RBDigital, a number of online magazines can be accessed. Two are reviewed here by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Online Magazines

Britain

travel, culture, heritage and style Britain offers many good stories. To honour the NHS, it looks back at the exploits of pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale and, to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, explores the private life of wartime prime minister Winston Churchill. It also shares the story of Pat Davies, whose work for the secret services in translating intercepted German codes was crucial to the war effort. A lot of places are beautifully presented, inviting you to explore heritage towns and castles from Hastings to Manchester, Pembrokeshire and Harrogate. I was fascinated by the tale of Dickens’s London hotspot, the real Alice who inspired Lewis Carroll and the exhibition you shouldn't miss, The Field of Cloth of Gold, relating the events 500 years ago when Henry VIII met Francis I for a 18-day celebration of their peace agreement. Britain magazine certainly has a lot to offer.

Running for Beginners This magazine has everything you need to get you started. We often think we just want to run. But if we schedule weekly for it, buy the right shoes and do the right warm-up exercise to prevent injuries, we will increase our chance of liking this sport and not quit after a month. The magazine has been well designed to explain all the tricks and stop you failing. It fills you in on the gear, the gadgets, groups you can join, safety issues, the different running environments, injuries, recovery and food. I was well impressed as it helps you build a timetable for your first 5K, 10K, half-marathon or marathon. Worth a read! Adult Non-Fiction Amanda Judge, one of our team members at Keynsham Library, is a keen gardener. Throughout the lockdown, she has identified some excellent reads for fellow enthusiasts

Grow Fruit & Vegetables in Pots

Planting advice and recipes from Great Dixter Aaron Bertelsen I can’t wait to get my hands on this title (it will be available to reserve once the service is available). The ‘Great Dixter’ is an enticement as it is the well-known garden of the famous gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd. Many of us don’t have outside growing

space but can fit in a few pots somewhere. I’ve always grown my tomatoes and cucumbers in pots, and have tried lettuce, salad greens, strawberries and blueberries, but I would like to be more adventurous. Aaron Bertelsen, a gardenercook, details more than 25 varieties suitable for pots, and the recipes will be a bonus.

Grow Your Own Cake

Recipes from Plot to Plate Holly Farrell Some of Holly’s recipes sound familiar, including rhubarb and custard crumble cake, carrot and almond cake and lavender shortbread, but what is a chocolate herb tart or a toffee apple cupcake? I’m also intrigued by the savoury recipes of root veg tarte tatin and pea cheesecake! Bakes are divided into seasonal chapters for the cakes then a chapter is devoted for each to afternoon treats, puddings and savoury bakes. She includes an index for those with food intolerances, listing recipes free of wheat, gluten and dairy. The book starts with advice on growing the varieties she recommends for her recipes. I am off to sow basil for strawberry and basil cupcakes.

21st-Century Smallholder

From Window Boxes To Allotments: How to go back to the land without leaving home Paul Waddington ‘Without leaving home’ - a salient reminder that most of us have more time at home. The first chapter is devoted to fruit and veg. I especially like his table to aid plant choice by six factors - time, space, gourmet, season, hassle and beauty - using shaded icons. You can see at a glance the easiest, least space-gobbling and tastiest crops to grow. Top of pops for a novice with a small garden are garlic, lettuce, rocket, tomatoes and strawberries. Even if you don’t fancy keeping bees, pigs or chickens, there is enough worthwhile detail on planning a productive garden, crop rotation, preparing the soil, composting, planting and tending, to warrant downloading this book. Who knows? You may be tempted to experiment further.

Life changed in one quick moment Each person’s snatched away. For weeks and months we’ve persevered To find a NORMAL day.

Realisation

There's whelks and cockles and mussels too Served in a polystyrene cup With crowded beaches and donkey rides My opinion is not looking up With ice cream in cornets and sticks of rock Hundreds of deckchairs - find room for one more There's saucy postcards and kiss-me-quick hats Buckets and spades - building sandcastles galore Arcades with flashing slot machines Spending pennies that turn into pounds Grab a soft toy with a crane that won't grab With its myriad of deafening sounds You've paid good money for two weeks away But just lie on the sand and cook As your factor ten proves inadequate Red skin’s not a pleasing look But worse is to come when it starts to peel With burning sensations unpleasant You want to lie in a bath full of ice As the itching becomes more incessant The things I dislike are too many to list, But it's what millions enjoy the most So who am I to pour scorn on their fun? Instead I'll simply admire the beautiful coast. John Howlett

But now it’s slowly dawning We HAVE to make that change. For life will never be the same Something we can’t arrange. So now we all must realise That every thing will alter We’ve all been given new lives now Our mission’s not to falter. SO Let’s thank the Lord for blessings all His Kingdom stays the same. God’s love and friendship shining through For every human frame.

Moving On We’ve made many friends during lockdown The pigeon, the squirrel, the fox. The garden and flowers are a picture While our worries are put in a box. Now people are all venturing outwards To work, or to school and to shops. Some are much braver than others And out in their shorts and their tops. For every thing’s looking much brighter As months now are all fading fast. We’ve all got our hopes that a vaccine Will end all our troubles at last. So look to the future and happier days There’s pleasures awaiting us all. A solution is just round the corner And then we will all have a ball. Sylvia Kirby

n FRY CLUB JUNIORS AND WILDCATS

Relief as training returns

FRY Club Juniors and Wildcat Girls returned to football training at Somerdale on Saturday July 4 under the EFA’s Covid-19 guidance. The girls and boys had great fun in the fresh air, renewing their friendships from before the lockdown when all grassroots football was shut down. The young players were happy to chat with team mates while maintaining the two-metre distancing and other protocols before starting practices that had been set up, with all physical contact removed, by the Fry Club coaches. Parents said it was great for their children to get out and do some organised exercise. And all the coaches agreed that it was great to be back training again.

The Wildcats and Fry under-12s enjoying being back in the open air

Kelsey Manning, lead female coach, said: “Having planned the Wildcat sessions by removing all contact and maintaining social distancing, it really worked well and was great fun, with a lot of happy faces at the close.” Would you would like to join Wildcats? They train on

Saturdays at 10.45am and are open to all girls aged 5 to 12, with no previous football experience required. If you want to have fun and learn to play football in a girls’ environment, just turn up on Saturdays at Somerdale Pavilion in Bottom car park.

Fry Club Juniors Boys under-12s and under-14s play in the Avon Youth League on Sundays and are looking for new players and a goalkeeper for next season. If you are interested in joining Fry Club JFC or Wildcats girls, please contact Bernie Grimes on 07760197849.

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Get set to make a socially-distanced splash! AFTER months of being unable to get in the water, members of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club have the pools firmly in their sights again, and they simply cannot wait! With a heavy heart, the KASC committee decided in mid-March to suspend all training because of the Covid-19 pandemic. And to date they have still not been back in the pool. Swimmers across England had hoped pools would be included in the July 4 lockdown easing announced on June 23, but many were devasted to learn not only were they not opening but there was no date to work towards. Swim England chief executive Jane Nickerson expressed her ‘dismay and frustration’ at the government’s failure to help millions of people return to swimming pools. This prompted Swim England to launch the #OpenOurPools campaign calling for the decision to be reconsidered immediately. It wasn’t until July 9 that the government announced that indoor gyms, pools and leisure centres could reopen safely from July 25. In the meantime, the more competitive swimmers have been keeping themselves busy with weekly video training sessions with Mike Uren, their land training coach over lockdown. Since the end of June, the swimmers have been able to come together in small groups twice weekly to train with coaches Mike, Jasper and Zach. Head coach Kay Rex said: “It’s great to get

Above, head coach Kay Rex. Left, land training at Saltford Sports Club the club back together again. I’ve really missed everyone.” The next step is getting the whole club, from prelims to masters, back into the water. KASC is fortunate that Hengrove Leisure Centre pool is provisionally planning to open on August 17, with Keynsham Leisure Centre pool expected to open in September. Many pools and leisure facilities across the UK are unable to open, and the sector is looking to the government for financial support. Pools need to be cleaned, reheated and the water quality needs to be tested. And they need to operate in a Covid-secure way that keeps the

swimmers, coaches, leisure centre staff and parents safe. Following guidance set out by Swim England, Keynsham set up a Covid working group, led by Thea Beament, to put procedures in place so the club can return to the water as soon as possible. It’s going to be a challenge getting used to the ‘new normal’ but the swimmers cannot wait to dip their toes in again! If your child aged 7 and over is a competent swimmer and would be interested in joining the club, please contact thea.beament@ keynshamswimming.club to register your interest, or enquire via the club’s Facebook page.

n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Club shows its support for care home

Keynsham Town Chairman Adrian Cole presents Carol Richards, of Sirona Care & Health, with a cheque for £830. Looking on are Tricia Davies (Head of Services) and Dawn Head (regional nurse), resident Edith West-Gaul and committee members of Keynsham Town FC THE Covid-19 outbreak and suspension of playing has hit local non-league football clubs like Keynsham Town hard. Together with the uncertainty of when clubs can start playing again, the club were unable to plan properly for the forthcoming season. Like many clubs in the area, as part of the necessary fund-raising, Keynsham Town set up a crowd-funding page. But they also decided to support their local community, too, by splitting any funds raised 50:50 with a local facility.

It was decided to support Charlton House, a residential care home in Keynsham. And on July 7, Keynsham Town presented Charlton House with a cheque for £830. The money will be used to buy a specialist Integra shell seat chair to help improve the lives of residents. The care home offers a broad range of activities to promote independence by developing, maintaining and enhancing people’s skills, interests and abilities. The home also offers services to the wider community, including respite care, day

care, a hairdressing service, toe-nail-cutting service and the use of an assisted bathroom. In addition, there are rooms that can be booked for meetings and activities, and refreshments can be provided. Charlton House has two units – Somerdale, which provides a service for older people with dementia, and Abbey Park, which serves older people with a range of physical disabilities. n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

It's so hard to plan ahead, but we'll meet again JUST as a butterfly slowly emerges from its chrysalis, members of Keynsham Bowling Club are starting to bid a farewell to lockdown and get back to playing the game they love. At the start of June, the Government lifted the lockdown on external sports, and members were able to return to the green in Keynsham Park and play subject to strict controls. A friendly roll-up was all that was allowed, by way of pre-booking a green with only 12 members on site at any time, with just three greens being used. In addition, all buildings were closed, apart from the toilets. As we moved into July, restrictions were eased and the executive committee decided to respond accordingly. Members were asked if they wanted to participate in singles and pairs

competitions over the next couple of months, and 24 players are taking part in each one. Strict time limits have been placed on each game, and if the designated number of ends have not been played at the end of 90 minutes, the winners will be decided based on the number of shots scored at the end of the time slot. The clubhouse will be open, together with the bar, allowing participants to have a drink at the end of the game with social distancing being observed. Only 30 members will be allowed on site at any given time, covering both the green and the clubhouse. At least the introduction of these two competitions gives members the chance of

playing against each other, as all of the leagues that both ladies and gentlemen play in have been cancelled for the season. At the time of writing, we should have enjoyed our annual BBQ, which is arranged each year by the social committee in aid of the captains’ chosen charities, which this year would have been Parkinson’s UK. The committee would normally be planning monthly social events for the winter months ahead, but this is difficult in such uncertain times. However, most of our members belong to a generation where optimism is the order of the day. In the words of the late Vera Lynn, recently echoed by the Queen in her televised address, “we will meet again”.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

Lottery funding helps club survive FRYS Bowling Club in Keynsham has been awarded £3,245 of National Lottery money to support it during the Covid-19 pandemic. The outbreak of the virus and shutdown of businesses has left bowls and other sports facing uncertainty. In response, Sport England announced a £195 million package to help the sport and physical activity sector. Within the package is a £20 million Community Emergency Fund of National Lottery money to deliver immediate funding to those who have a role in supporting the nation to be active but are experiencing short-term financial hardship or the ceasing of operations due to the impact of coronavirus. The grant will allow Frys Bowling Club to cover the cost of green maintenance and the loss of income for the coming months. Club chairman Andy Kendall said: “The club’s officers and members are extremely grateful for the award and would like to thank Sport England and the National Lottery for their generosity. “Without this financial assistance, the bowling club’s 103-year history may have come to an end. We can now look forward to providing local residents with this sports facility for many years to come.”

Without the National Lottery funding, the club's 103-year history might have come to an end Tim Hollingsworth, Sport England’s Chief Executive, said: “As the body responsible for the growth of sport and physical activity participation, we want the vital grassroots organisations that make sport and physical activity happen in this country to not just to come through this crisis but to be in a position to thrive again in the future. “The £20m Community Emergency Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, is part of a multi-million-pound package of support we are providing to ease the pressure on a huge number of the organisations who are central to the nation’s health and wellbeing. “We are proud to be able to provide vital

funding to Frys Bowling Club to help it through these extremely challenging times.” On the green, with recent changes to the restrictions, the club has been able to allow pairs and triples to play, as well organising informal club afternoons in place of regular friendly matches. The club is still open to new members, whether or not they have experience of bowls. For more information about the club, or if you wish to apply for membership or arrange tuition, please contact the secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com.
