Somerdale chocolate: the taste of Somerset CHOCOLATE bars made in Keynsham are now promoting tourism in Somerset. The town’s Somerdale Chocolate business has been chosen by Visit Somerset as supplier of traditional, handmade bars. Each has a wrapper depicting Glastonbury Tor and some contain ‘golden tickets’ giving free admission to attractions in the county. John Turner, chief executive of Visit Somerset said he was delighted to be investing in a local product made in a town known for production of Cadbury’s chocolate. Kelly Daw, from Somerset Chocolate, said: “We are thrilled to be launching these special bars with the Visit Somerset and the Buy Somerset logo.” The bars are available at tourist destinations, guest houses and hotels in the county.

Increase in bus fares BUS operator First has raised fares for passengers who use prepaid tickets, including the mTicket phone app. Adult single fares in the Bristol Zone have gone up from £2 to £2.25 and day tickets have risen from £4 to £4.50 – an increase of 12.5 per cent – while week tickets are up from £17 to £18.90. West of England Zone fares have also risen for people travelling further afield, from £3.50 to £3.85 for single journeys, from £6 to £6.60 for a day ticket and from £22 to £24.20 for a weekly ticket. Month and year prepaid ticket prices also rose, with the increases in force from July 21. As well as the mTicket app, prepaid tickets also include PayPoint and Payzone stores, Metrobus iPoints, online and First’s Travelhub at Bristol Bus Station. The price of tickets bought on board will remain the same. First West of England says it is the first time since 2015 that prices for pre-paid tickets have risen. Commercial director Rob Pymm said: "The new fares are essential in helping us continue to improve our service across our Bristol network, as we aim to encourage more people to travel with public transport.

Wait for details over 999 plans THE people of Keynsham deserve to have a say on the future of the town’s ambulance station, say councillors. The town council is angry that it was not told about the possible closure of the 999 base and was still not given information after it requested it once news of the review of South Western Ambulance Service’s provision was revealed. It has now written to Ken Wenman, chief executive of the trust that runs the ambulance service, to offer to host a public meeting. The council says the public deserve clarification and should be consulted on any proposed closure. More than 2,000 people have signed a petition urging that the station be kept open, particularly in the light of a large predicted growth in the

population of Keynsham and the high proportion of residents aged over 65. The town clerk, Dr Cheryl Scott, says in her letter to Mr Wenman that councillors were already concerned about response times for ambulance calls and feel sure that closure will only make matters worse. South Western Ambulance Service told the Voice last month that it could not reveal any details of specific station changes until it had completed a series of briefing events with its workers. But the 26 staff at Keynsham station said they wete told the premises would shut by the end of the year and they would be moved to central Bristol. South Western Ambulance Service said an extra £12 million aimed at reducing demand and improving response times would result in more than 240 extra

frontline staff and allowed a review of the location of crews, vehicles and stations. A service spokesman said: “The demand on the ambulance service and the nature of the calls we receive has changed significantly over time and some of our stations are no longer located where we need them to be. Many of our stations are also in need of significant repair and refurbishment.” He said crews were rarely at a station as they were out treating patients or on standby elsewhere but they would always have a base station to book onto and off shifts and for breaks. He said: “There will be

We have long had ties with complementary practitioners and a number of them work privately at Saltford surgery. Please feel free to pick up their leaflets from the surgery. Many of them offer concessional rates.

a small number of changes to stations linked to the implementation of this plan, including changes to existing facilities that need updating because we have outgrown them, but there will not be significant numbers of station closures.” Jo Fowles, South West Ambulance and Allied Health Unison branch chair, said: “We welcome the planned investment and extra resources being proposed by the trust as this is something we’ve been calling for for years. But our members are concerned at plans to close ambulance stations and centralise operations into one or two hubs for the Bristol area.”

Bristol Airport responds to climate

BRISTOL Airport has stepped up its action on carbon emissions in recognition of the climate emergency. It has brought forward its deadline for becoming carbon neutral from 2030 to 2025 and is introducing a levy later this year on road journeys to the airport - which will take the form of increased charges for using its express drop-off. Airport bosses insist that their proposals will mean the proposed expansion of the airport can go ahead without compromising the desire of all local authorities surrounding its site at Lulsgate to take action over the climate emergency. Bristol Airport says its ambitious targets to cut both direct emissions from flights and indirect emissions from traffic put it at the forefront of carbon reduction in the UK airport sector. Its ultimate objective is to become net zero by 2050 in line with the commitment made by the European airport industry last month, it says. The airport is committed to joining the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) which will start in 2021 with the aim of stabilising emissions from international aviation at 2020 levels. The airport has set out its plans in a ‘carbon roadmap’, which can be viewed at https:// bit.ly/30MDpea.

Ambitious plans to cut emissions - but opponents not convinced The action follows declarations of climate emergency by the West of England Combined Authority, its three component councils Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset Council as well as other authorities including Keynsham Town Council. Saltford Parish Council is also involved. It opposes the airport expansion and wants B&NES to encourage Bristol Airport to review and better manage the flight paths over the Bath, Saltford and Keynsham area because of increasing concerns over noise and air pollution. B&NES councillors are to meet their counterparts from North Somerset Council to outline their objections to the airport’s growth because of the environmental impact. Cabinet councillors Tim Ball and Sarah Warren wrote to North Somerset leaders urging them to take account of the climate emergency and the urgent need to cut carbon emissions when deciding whether to grant the airport permission to expand. Councillor Ball said the expansion of Bristol Airport was incompatible with B&NES

Council’s carbon neutrality goal. “From a planning perspective, as a consultee, we have submitted an objection on highways grounds, expressing our concern about the very real impact the increase in airport traffic will have on our nearby rural communities. However, we want to ensure that councillors in North Somerset do not interpret this as the sole basis of our concern about the expansion.” Councillor Warren added: “The proposed expansion of Bristol Airport won’t just affect North Somerset. Carbon pollution from aviation is one of the fastest-growing sources of the greenhouse gas emissions which drive global climate change. Increasing the capacity of Bristol Airport and therefore the number of aircraft flying in and out will exacerbate the problem and that goes against the commitment that we, and indeed North Somerset Council, have made to tackle climate change in declaring a Climate Emergency.” Nick Coates, who hopes to contest North East Somerset for the Liberal Democrats at the general election, recently joined 400 people in a protest in Wrington against expansion of

the airport. He said: “We are all aware that there is a Climate Emergency. So why is any sensible government allowing extra runways or airport expansion? All the councils in the West of England, and many further afield, have declared a Climate Emergency. The Committee on Climate Change highlights the fact that the aviation sector is on a path to generate more greenhouse gas emissions than any other sector. This is why I am working with others to stop Bristol Airport expansion.” He added: “If the West of England is to meet its goal of reducing emissions from 2014 levels by 50 per cent before 2035 then we will need to both reduce vehicle movements and flights.” Mr Coates said noise pollution, particularly at night, would worsen under the new proposals. The promised money by the airport for window insulation was no use to those further away from the airport sin the villages along the Chew Valley, Compton Dando and South Keynsham which are directly on the flight path. Chew Valley villages, such as Chew Magna, are also impacted by light pollution as cars drive through the villages in the middle of the night with full beam headlights on, Mr Coates added.

n NEWS

My role at Bath Vets GP surgeries join forces M Y name is Becki and I am a newly qualified Veterinary Nurse. Many people do not understand what being a veterinary nurse entails – it is quite often assumed I am actually a vet, OR just a puppy cuddler (if this is a job, where do I sign up???). According to survey results, over 50% of pet owners do not understand the role of vet nurses. So, what do we actually do? We are anaesthetists, phlebotomists, radiographers, oral hygienists, consulting nurses, behaviourists, nutritionists, lab technicians, medicine and hospital ward nurses, critical care nurses, barrier nurses (preventing spread of infection), scrub nurses/surgical assistants, physiotherapists, bereavement/guidance counsellors, groomers, preventative healthcare nurses, mediators, neonatal nurses, and of course, animal lovers and ambassadors for animal welfare. These titles are well-earned from years of training that permits us to be on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Register. I have worked for Bath Vet Group for three years now at Rosemary Lodge Hospital, but will be starting at our Keynsham Branch this summer as one of two nurses. My intention is to broaden my veterinary knowledge and build my confidence skills by sharing this with a growing client-base in nursing consultations. Before working for Bath Vet Group, I volunteered with Globalteer on a Dog Rescue Project in Peru. Here are some things I am happy to help you and your pet with in a free consult: • Weight management • Post-op care • Oral hygiene advice • Confidence clinics (for animals scared of coming to the vets) • Microchipping (fee applies) • Second Vaccinations (fee applies) • New Pet Advice • Neutering Advice • Behavioural Advice • Blood pressure checks • Bandage changes (fee applies) • Flea and Worm treatment (fee applies) • Nail-clips (fee applies) • Blood sampling recommended by vet (fee applies) I look forward to meeting you!

SURGERIES in Keynsham are working together more closely to help ensure the best service for patients in the face of the challenges to general practice. The medical practices of St Augustine’s, Temple House and Westview, which together serve 25,000 people, have formed Keynsham Primary Care Network. It is led by two clinical directors: Dr Nick Woodward, a partner at St Augustine’s and Dr Charles Bleakley, a partner at Westview. Bath & North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group says the formation of the PCN and four parallel networks across the district will enable more proactive, personalised and coordinated care. “Primary Care Networks will help to make sure that patients are supported and signposted to the health and care Dr Charles Bleakley professional who is best placed to help this could be a GP, pharmacist, district nurse, physiotherapist, paramedic, physician associate, as well as staff working in social care or the voluntary sector,” a spokesman said. “The development of PCNs will support patients to get appointments more quickly and access services that are closer to home. The model aims to free up time for GPs so they can focus more on supporting patients with more complex conditions.” Dr Nick Woodward Practices will have more opportunities to share clinical expertise and staff, the spokesman added. This work has already begun; for example, have worked collaboratively to jointly employ two advanced nurse practitioners to carry out home visits. Dr Brynn Bird, Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (BaNES CCG) GP Board member and GP at St Augustine's Medical Practice, said Primary Care Networks would make a real difference to people’s health and care. “The establishment of five PCNs in B&NES is critical to improving the overall quality of community based care,” he said.

Russell Howard wows Keynsham crowd at surprise gig BRISTOL-born comedian Russell Howard received a huge applause when he took to the stage at a surprise gig in Keynsham at the start of July. The audience went mad when Smiley Spaces Comedy Club surprised them with a 40 minute guest appearance from Russell at The Space on Friday July 5. The packed out crowd sprung to their feet whooping and cheering when he was introduced to the stage and couldn’t quite believe what they were seeing Russell, who previously attended the University of the West of England before becoming one of the UK’s most popular stand-up comics thanks to appearances on Mock the Week and Russell Howard’s Good News, said: "It was the loudest noise there had ever been coming from a small room at the top of the library”. Smiley Spaces Comedy Club was brought to life two years ago by comedian Andy Askins and his wife Julie. After they moved to Trowbridge from the Isle of Wight, they decided they wanted to start a comedy club as there didn’t seem to be anything similar in the area. They chose Keynsham as their location for their biggest shows due to it being based halfway between the big cities of Bristol and Bath, and once a month on a Friday night

three headline comedians take to the stage in front of approximately 130 people. Speaking about the gig and the Comedy Club, Julie said: “Andy recently worked with Russell at a charity gig at Bristol Hippodrome. Sally-Anne Hayward was also on the bill and she mentioned our club to him, and he said that he would be happy to come and do a work-in-progress show for us ahead of his upcoming tour. “We didn’t advertise his performance

because we would have sold out immediately and if lots of his fans had attended then he wouldn’t have got a true reflection of his material. We wanted it to be for the people who have supported us every month and so we decided to keep it a complete secret. We are hoping to do the same for July’s show next year too! “It was an absolute delight having him perform alongside Steve Williams and Andy Askins. The Comedy Club is going from strength to strength and it’s been absolutely fabulous, the support we’ve had is brilliant. People come along and then tell their friends and then they come along too, and some people have said it’s the best thing come to Keynsham for a while. I know about 50% of the audience by name now, so there’s a nice rapport and a great atmosphere - people are simply there to watch and enjoy the comedy.” Smiley Spaces Comedy Club’s next show at The Space is on Friday September 6 with headliners The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Comedy Revue, Eleanor Tiernan and Ro Campbell. I

n the last few months both Keynsham and the Chew Valley have be blighted by fly tipping. We have been working with the council to deal with the offenders of this. There are various ways that we look to identify the offenders for these offences but what we need is help from the community. If you see a likely vehicle, in a secluded location then please pass that information to us. If you actually witness an offence please report it so that we can work with the council to prosecute offenders and bring them to justice. We have been looking at giving new burglary advice “Remove the opportunity, remove the crime”, recently we have been suffering

9

If you have a £1000 bike in your shed is it reasonable to secure with this a £5 latch and padlock? I would suggest it should be secured with a ground anchor and a decent chain/ lock.

with both motorcycle and pedal cycle thefts across the force and in our area. There is a traveling ‘gang’ who have been attending our area normally in the early hours and committing these offences. Please look at your own security, think about bypassing it and how difficult it might be and whether you think it’s suitable. If you have a £1000 bike in your shed is it reasonable to secure with this a £5 latch and padlock? I would suggest it should be secured with a ground anchor and a decent chain/ lock. The environment around where items are kept is also important lighting, cameras, even position of outbuildings/ sheds. All of this can be looked at and assessed by our

bobby vans who can come round and give you advice about your homes, you can make contact with them through the Avon and Somerset Website if you would like some advice. Avon and Somerset Police have been really busy with major events. From the Glastonbury and NAS festivals to the St Pauls Carnival, Pride and the Extension Rebellion protest to name but a few. What does this mean for us and what impact does it have on Neighbourhood Policing? In real terms this means that the police have to pedal a bit faster! We have been lucky that we have had another beat manager Neil Scarborough over helping so

while I have been abstracted to cover these events he has been in Keynsham making sure our day to day work load is being dealt with. This month we had our own music festival with the main celebrations in the memorial park on the Sunday. I am pleased that this was a success with only minor incidents being reported. The weather was good and thousands of people came into Keynsham. This incident is really important to Keynsham and the local business that profit from it so we look forward to next year’s event being even more successful. If you are going away on holiday and you are a member of a neighbourhood watch then let the group know your movements so that they can keep an eye on your home. If not, then speak to your neighbours, family or friends. How you leave your house can be very obvious that it is empty for a period of time. Get them to change the profile - move curtains, add a vehicle to the driveway, make it look like there is activity to prevent it becoming a target of burglars.

Ofsted: Wellsway School still Good - and improving STAFF, students and parents are celebrating news that Wellsway School has been confirmed as Good in all areas. A full, two-day Ofsted inspection in June showed that the school deserved the rating it was given in January 2018 and has continued to improve ever since. Wellsway was judged to be “Good” for results; quality of teaching; effective leadership; behaviour and welfare and for its sixth form. Principal Matthew Woodville said he was delighted at the validation from Ofsted and the report’s many positive comments and he vowed to ensure the school kept on getting better. The inspectors said that Mr Woodville had been “determined and purposeful in his efforts to drive up the quality of teaching and behaviour”. Lead inspector, Steve Smith, praised teachers’ strong subject knowledge and the school’s curriculum that met the needs of all. The inspection team agreed that students at all levels made good progress and higherability students were challenged. “Leadership at different levels in the school is strong. Leaders have raised expectations of staff and pupils,” the report said. Mr Smith said Wellsway School felt harmonious to visitors. He highlighted the positive relationships, tolerance and mutual respect in the school and that absence and exclusion rates were found to be reducing. “Pupils are polite, personable and good humoured. They generally get on well together and are tolerant and accepting of difference,” his report said. “Leaders are shaping the school’s provision to ensure that pupils have a rounded school experience that

promotes pastoral well-being and academic success equally.” The range of extra-curricular activities and the high-quality careers advice was highlighted. The sixth form was also judged to be Good. The inspector noted that in 2018, more than 40 per cent of students achieved places at Russell Group universities. The inspection team acknowledged that some of the many changes to systems, routines and culture in the school in recent years had not been popular with everyone but said they had been made with good reason to drive up standards. Ofsted praised Wellsway Multi Academy Trust for providing leadership expertise, resourcing and financial support, creating opportunities for staff and holding the school to account. The important role played by governors was also recognised. Mr Woodville commented: “The report and grading reflects the improvements made

since 2016 and is the result of everyone’s hard work and collaboration to make the school the best it can be for the young people we serve. I extend my thanks to the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust for the support it provides; to staff for their commitment and hard work, to parents and to students. “While we want to celebrate this success, we intend to build on it to ensure that Wellsway School provides the best all-round education possible.” Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, said: “Congratulations to everyone at Wellsway School on a very positive Ofsted report. WMAT is very proud of Wellsway School and appreciates Mr Woodville’s strong leadership and the hard work he and his team of staff have put in to achieve this judgement. “We also know how determined everyone is to continue to improve and we look forward to seeing the school go from strength to strength.”

'Dando bird' returns home with new coat of gold

Bartek, from Dawsons steeplejacks, descends the tower at St Mary's after installing the 'bird' and replacing some lightning conductor terminals

THE church weather vane on St Mary's Church, Compton Dando, is now back in its rightful place after being taken away for a new coat of gold. Church representative, Clive Howarth, said : “The weather vane had stopped rotating and was looking distinctly shabby. “Dawsons, the steeplejacks, removed it and replaced the bearings and re-guilded the 'Dando Bird,' which in fact is a dragon. “It was put back in its rightful place in the middle of July and now it rotates in all its golden splendour showing passers-by the direction of the wind. “The PCC of St Mary's is very grateful to the Feoffees trust, who paid for the work," he said., “At the same time Dawsons replaced some of the lightning conductor terminals on the tower, hence the daring- do abseil by Bartek.” The weather vane, which was erected in 1757, is known locally as a 'Dando Bird' but in fact it's a dragon. The gilding, which is done with gold leaf, was last carried out in 1997. The full name of the medieval trust, which paid for the reguilding, is The Compton Dando Church Estate Trust, and it was established in 1530 by the last Prior of Bath Abbey, William

Holloway, and a lawyer, David Brook to support the church in Compton Dando. Mr Howarth said : “The property to support the trust came entirely from the lands owned by Bath Abbey. In the Reformation, in Henry VIII's time, Bath Abbey was suppressed and all its lands went to the crown except the lands of the trust. The trust is commonly referred to as The Feoffees and its objectives, solely in the village of Compton Dando, are to support the fabric of the church, the school of the parish (education) and the poor of the parish in that order. “The trust is believed to be unique in that early trustees won a long-running court case (1572-1594) when the crown challenged its legality. No other such trust established at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries survives. “The current Feoffees are hugely indebted to Joe Bettey, one time chair, and eminent local historian, for some fascinating detailed research into the origins of the trust," he said. Copies of Joe’s papers can be obtained by contacting the Steward to the Trust, Lorna Howarth.

The Keynsham Chicks, coordinated by Margaret Roper, give the proceeds to the local children’s hospice - Charlton Farm in Wraxall. Once knitted and stuffed with a chocolate eggs, the chicks are sold all over the area and beyond during Easter. The group visited Charlton Farm during its July Open Day and handed over a cheque for £4,044 to Community Fundraiser, Frances Kenneally, who said: “This is an incredible group of people who’ve raised over £10,000 for Charlton Farm in the last three years. The ladies are already planning a Christmas knit this year to raise even more money for the vital work we do. We cannot thank them enough.” Charlton Farm helps and supports families who face the emotional and physical strain of caring for children who are not expected to live into adulthood. n NEWS Right royal win for 'Bug-ingham Palace' creation CHANDAG Infant School has been awarded the Roland Reed Cup for its success in a competition organised by Keynsham Rotary. Five schools took part in the contest to build the best Bug Hotel. Four Rotarians carried out the judging. Chandag Infants were declared winners because of their overall approach to the project. A Rotary spokesman said: “Much effort was put into choosing the best location, clearing the chosen site of brambles and designing a Bug Hotel which catered for many different species of bug. “We were also impressed by the way that the project was being used by the pupils to study and understand nature and the importance of insects, especially pollinators, to ensure our food sources are maintained.

“It was also encouraging to learn that this study would continue in future years, using the Bug Hotel (named Bug-

Shoppers boost air ambulance GREAT Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) is thanking the community for its support after the charity received £3,995 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme. Shoppers in Keynsham, Longwell Green and Saltford voted in stores earlier this year, choosing their air ambulance as the winners of the grant. GWAAC provides the critical care and air ambulance services to those in need across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire. It brings the skills and expertise of the emergency department to the most seriously ill or injured across the region. The money received has paid for AV training equipment at the charity’s new air base in Almondsbury, enhancing the

training facilities for the Critical Care Team to ensure that the local community receive the best possible emergency care. Air operations officer for GWAAC, John Wood, said: “The purchase and installation of the AV equipment has been of enormous benefit to the clinical and charity teams alike. We are now able to present educational sessions to the medical team ensuring we maintain the highest standards of care to our patients.” The GWAAC Critical Care Team consists of Critical Care Doctors and Specialist Paramedics. GWAAC needs to raise more than £3 million each year to stay operational, but receives no day-to-day funding from the Government or National Lottery so relies on donations from the public.

Diabetes challenge A MAN from Saltford is taking on the One Million Step Challenge for Diabetes UK. The event takes place between July 1 and September 30. Ian Etheridge, 42, has been walking his three dogs three miles a day since January in an effort to keep his blood glucose levels under control and lose weight. He said: “The nurse weighed me at New Year and I couldn’t believe it when she told me I was 18 stone. I’ve lost a stone since then thanks to the walking but I’m hoping to lose more during the Million Step Challenge. I don’t drink much and I don’t smoke, but I’m going to watch what I eat. I’m going to be very strict.” Ian, a transport planner, needs to take at least 10,000 steps a day to reach his million. He hopes to raise £150 for Diabetes UK. Built in 1745, it was sited where Poundland now stands; for many years inquests and official meetings were held there and later it became home to band practices and dances at the Palm Court Ballroom. Food packaging recycling trial under way A TRIAL is under way at Tesco in Keynsham for recycling of food packaging that can’t be collected at the kerbside. The town’s store is one of ten in the Bristol and Swindon area trying out the new system. Customers can return everything from pet food pouches to shopping bags and crisp packets to a collection booth in the supermarket. The packaging is being sent to a company called Recycling Technologies to turn it into a material that can then be used to manufacture new plastic. Tesco says it is a significant step in its efforts to make all its packaging recyclable, creating a closed loop – preventing packaging from going to waste.

Tesco’s director of quality, Sarah Bradbury said: “Reducing and recycling plastics is such an important issue for us, for customers and for the future of our planet. That’s why we are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging in our stores and have committed that all remaining packaging will be recyclable by 2025. “Our trial with Recycling Technologies will make even more of our packaging recyclable and help us reach our target. This technology could be the final piece of the jigsaw for the UK plastic recycling industry.” Recycling Technologies’ chief executive, Adrian Griffiths, said: “We are delighted to be working with Tesco to help its customers

You can return: Crisp, chocolate, rice cake packets Sweets and biscuit wrappers Pet food, baby food pouches Drink pouches (e.g. Caprisun) Yogurt tubes and pots Cling film, multi-pack film, film lids Any plastic bag such as fruit & veg, bread, pasta,

recycle more of their household plastic waste. Using our specialist ‘feedstock’ recycling process we keep more plastic waste in the economy and out of landfill and our oceans. This initiative with Tesco is designed to show there are solutions to recover this important material. Our goal is to double the UK’s capacity to recycle plastic waste by 2027.” Eighty three per cent of all Tesco’s packaging is currently recyclable. Should this softplastics collection be rolled out to all Tesco stores, the store chain estimates that it will be possible

Council to stop sending waste overseas for incineration RUBBISH from Keynsham that can’t be recycled will no longer be sent to Scandinavia but will instead be converted into power for use locally. This is thanks to a 10-year deal by four local authorities to incinerate so-called residual waste - material that cannot be recycled or otherwise reused - at two giant plants in Avonmouth. Bath & North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bristol councils say the new approach will save about £300,000 a year and reduce transport-related emissions. It has been made possible thanks to new technology that incinerates pre-treated, non-recyclable waste at high temperatures under carefully controlled conditions. This means that more

kerbside-collected waste can be diverted from landfill to be turned into fuel. The Energy from Waste plants at Avonmouth will also be able to deal with more bulky waste from council recycling centres. The councils say that, combined with ever-increasing rates of recycling, the three contracts agreed will have a positive impact on carbon footprints and environmental impact. Councillor David Wood, cabinet member for climate emergency and neighbourhoods at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “It’s terrible in

this day and age that we send our rubbish all the way to the continent to be incinerated; with Climate Change at the top of the agenda we need to be more careful with our carbon footprint. “Sending so much rubbish to landfill is also the worst possible thing we can do. Landfilled rubbish creates methane that worsens Climate Change. These changes will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill which is good news for residents of Bath & North East Somerset and great news for the environment.” B&NES currently recycles 58 per cent of its waste.

to recycle around 90 per cent of Tesco’s own-label packaging – the equivalent of 65,000 additional tonnes of plastic being put to good use every year. The trial has been welcomed by Keynsham Plastic Re-Action, whose protest about packaging went global last year. But it points out that large scale investment into this process contradicts aims to reduce plastic, as it relies on continued plastic usage. Ultimately, the answer to the plastic problem is to move away from using plastics altogether, it believes.

Clean-up success MORE than 12 tonnes of additional waste, the equivalent weight of a double decker bus, was collected as university students moved out of Bath for the summer. Council waste crews carried out extra collections last month in areas of the city with high concentrations of student accommodation to help prevent build-up of waste during the move out. The Student Community Partnership – a joint venture between the University of Bath and Bath Spa University, their respective Students’ Unions, and B&NES Council –worked with the waste services team to provide the extra collections, which were funded jointly by the universities.

Grants doled out to community groups

TWENTY thousand pounds in grants has been handed out to community groups in Keynsham. The money was presented to group representatives at an event at The Space in Keynsham sponsored by the St Monica Trust and Taylor Wimpey. Councillor David Biddleston, who made the presentations, drew attention to all the voluntary organisations who contribute to life in the town

such as Keynsham Wombles, who are committed to keeping the town free from litter. He said: “Sometimes, it's easy to forget that Keynsham has such a wide variety of wonderful individuals, often working for no reward, providing our schools, children and older residents with much needed additional support. To thank them is an absolute pleasure. Remember: See a Womble, thank a Womble”.

St Monica Trust’s community fund manager, Angelina Shoemake, said: “The trust was proud to sponsor such an important event that recognises the vital role played by community groups and charities in the local area. It was lovely to meet a fantastic array of people and learn all about the work they do. Together they make Keynsham the vibrant and caring community it is renowned for.”

A list of the grant recipients is available to view on the town council website or for a hard copy telephone 01225 395951 (temporary number). n SPOTLIGHT ON HOLIDAY HUNGER Organisations and volunteers are pulling out all the stops to make sure children are fed during the school holidays. Keynsham Food Bank has sent out extra supplies NO ONE should go to bed hungry - that’s the mantra of Keynsham Food Bank and it’s a particular challenge in the summer holidays when disadvantaged children are not getting their school dinners. Organisers are determined to ensure that families receive support. They have handed out bags of food to the families of children eligible for free school meals and they are still able to meet the needs of people turning up with their food bank vouchers, which entitle them to food for three meals per day for three days for each member of the family. But their supplies are low, so they are urging more people to check what is required and make donations. Alan Hale, co-ordinator of the food bank, said: "We keep an up to date white board above our drop boxes in Tesco and Waitrose in Keynsham and at the Coop in Chew Magna. This enables shoppers who want to help us, help those in food crisis, to buy what is needed rather than a generous but ad hoc purchase.” Keynsham Food Bank’s warehouse supplies three distribution centres, two in Keynsham and one in Saltford. Last year 'it gave out 600kg more food than it received, and demand is continuing to increase.

while Zest Catering is working with the charity FareShare to distribute food to hundreds of youngsters daily and a local restaurant is offering free kids' lunches.

' No one should go to bed hungry in 2019' Mr Hale said: “The school summer holidays are always a busy time for us as we try to lighten the financial load for those families whose budget is very limited and with the free school meals not being available they are having to find additional food throughout the holiday.” Keynsham Food Bank opened its doors in 2013 and last year fed a record 360 children and 456 adults. It is part of the Trussell Trust network, which saw demand for vouchers increase overall by 19 per cent last year. Trussell Trust expects this summer to be its busiest yet. The trust’s chief executive Emma Revie said: “Food banks will do all they can to help families over the summer, with many running holiday clubs to support parents who find that their income simply won’t stretch to meet the extra pressure of missing

free school meals or paying for additional childcare during the holidays. But no charity can replace the dignity of having enough money for the basics. “While it’s great to see schemes in place to tackle holiday hunger, food banks and other emergency food provision cannot, and must not, be a long term solution to poverty. Ultimately, we should all be protected from needing a food bank’s help, no matter the time of the year. “If we are to end hunger in the UK, we need to make sure everyone is anchored from being swept into poverty. The Government needs to ensure benefit payments reflect the true cost of living and work is secure, paying the real Living Wage. Every family should have enough money coming in for a decent standard of living. No child should face going hungry in the UK.”

Ending food poverty Rotarians John Pike and Nigel Hutchings with President Lynne Pike presenting the cheque to Stefan TEMPLE Street Canteen in Keynsham is again offering free children’s lunches during the holidays. The project has been backed by Keynsham Rotary, whih has handed over £200 so that proprietor Stefan would have adequate funds to source the enterprise over the next few months. The next lunches (served all day) are scheduled on Tuesday 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th August. As Stefan says “Just ask for kids’ meals at the counter, no questions asked, no other purchases necessary”. Parents or guardians are able to get a free meal as well if requested. A Rotary spokesman said: “We acknowledge the generosity of the Keynsham Lions club, which has already given financial support and we hope that our additional support will enable the project to continue as long as necessary.” The Canteen first offered free holiday lunches 18 months ago.

VOLUNTEERS from the Keynsham area are joining a major effort to provide food for children across Bristol this summer. Zest, the catering arm of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, is organising the provision of 13,000 meals from its kitchens at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common. This will ensure that 44,000 vulnerable children will receive daily meals distributed by more than 40holiday projects. The ActiveAte initiative has come about through Zest’s partnership with the charity FareShare South West, which redistributes surplus food. FareShare is part of a wider scheme called Feeding Bristol, which aims for a city-wide approach to reducing food insecurity, working with business, charity, public sector and faith groups to remove barriers to food provision.

n FOCUS ON SALTFORD BRASS MILL

Take a journey into industrial history SALTFORD Brass Mill is a fascinating remnant of the brass industry which thrived in the Avon Valley in the 18th & 19th centuries. It is also a place where visitors can explore this region’s place right at the beginning of the industrial revolution, before the age of steam, and learn about the workers and their families, the merchants and the engineers who made it all happen. The Mill’s unique annealing furnace is part of the reason the building was Scheduled as an Ancient Monument and Listed (Grade II*). It made possible the use of coal from nearby collieries. But the mechanical power to work the brass came from the four massive water wheels driven by the River Avon. One can still be seen by visitors; an eighteen foot working cast iron water wheel adapted in the last century to generate electricity and power a sawmill.

The interpretation displays within Saltford Brass Mill include full-size mock-ups of battery and rolling mill equipment which produced brass "hollow ware" or pot and pans, and brass sheet. Volunteers tell visitors the story of wire drawing and pin manufacture which lies at the beginning of modern manufacturing, and they describe the historic family links to skilled workers who came from Europe to work across the region's brass industry which thrived for almost two centuries with its early links to the slave trade and Bristol's merchant venturers. Displays show how the mill worked, how it came to survive into the 21st century and its impact on local social history. Out in the peaceful garden running waterwheel models demonstrate the different types of waterwheel and are popular with visitors of all ages. The Mill is an ongoing project with many fascinating conservation issues and projects, most recently the damming of the mill leat to allow for replacement of a failing sluice gate with a newly constructed one, and structural surveys and digital scans. Saltford Brass Mill is open as usual on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of August, from 10am to 4pm, before gearing up for the annual national ‘Heritage Open Days’ festival when we will be open for both weekends (14/15

Launch event for leisure centre revamp IMPROVED facilities at Keynsham’s Leisure Centre have been officially opened. Councillor Dine Romero, Bath & North East Somerset Council Leader and Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for community services, opened the centre’s new ground floor fitness suite, studios, changing facilities, soft play and café on Thursday June 27. The ceremony marked the end of the first phase of the £11million refurbishment of Keynsham’s Leisure Centre. Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for community services said: “The leisure centre had been in need of updating for a while, but before we started work we wanted to make sure the new facilities were well used so we asked local residents what they’d like to see. The result is fantastic new facilities which will service the community for many years to come and which we hope will encourage people to get active more often.” Work to transform the ageing building into a more modern and welcoming centre began in May last year. The refurbishment of the main pool hall and construction of a new teaching pool are now under way, with work expected to be completed by the autumn. The project is being delivered by Bath & North East Somerset Council though its contractor Kier, in partnership with GLL, who operate and manage the leisure centre on behalf of the council under the Better brand. The council secured

Cllr Paul Crossley; Daryl Parker, from Kier Construction; Scott Joyner, gym user and motocross champ sponsored by GLL; Cllr Dine Romero: and Jamie Coleshill, GLL regional director

£500,000 of funding towards the project from the National Lottery through a bid to the Strategic Facilities Fund which is administered by Sport England. The refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre forms part of the council’s continued investment in improving leisure facilities across the district to help support delivery of its ambitious Fit for Life strategy, which is designed to improve the health and well-being of everyone in the area, now and into the future. Its aim is to motivate more people to

get more active more often, especially families, young people, older people and those who are overweight and find ways to make physical activity more central to people’s lives. The council’s partnership with GLL has already delivered new facilities at Bath Sport and Leisure Centre which now boasts a new trampoline park, learner pool, soft play, changing facilities, reception areas, cafe and 10-pin bowling; and seen a dramatic increase in the number of people getting active across Bath and North East Somerset.

The refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre is part of a package of measures introduced by the council to help regenerate the town, from the redevelopment of the old council offices into contemporary new homes, to changes to traffic routing in the town centre and plans for improvements to the public realm in the town. Electoral roll forms go online

Jazz picnic strikes happy note AN evening of music, provided by the Bristol Blue Notes Band with talented jazz vocalist Hannah Wedlock, thrilled those attending a jazz picnic at Chewton Keynsham. The event, raising money for the new Cancer Care Centre at Bath RUH, was hosted by residents from the village in their beautiful garden. Around 100 guests enjoyed the music, sunshine and delightful setting raising £1,532 from ticket and raffle sales and generous donations. The event was organised by The Keynsham and Saltford Forever Friends Fundraising Group and their next fundraising

THOUSANDS of electors across Bath and North East Somerset completed their household enquiry forms online. More than 36,000 people were emailed by the council’s Electoral Services asking them to fill in the forms online in an effort to reduce printing, postage and processing costs. More than 14,000 forms have been completed in this way. The Electoral Registration Office is required by law to send a household enquiry form to all properties in their registration area. The information on the form is used to prepare an accurate register of electors, and enables the council to verify an individual’s eligibility to vote in an election. Residents who haven’t received the email can call Electoral Services on 01225 47 7487 and complete the form over the phone or can wait for the form to arrive in the post.

Music festival proves a smash hit

Stevie and Masquarades

Arcadia Roots FIFTEEN thousand music fans were certainly spoiled for choice at the 22nd Keynsham Music Festival. The festival took place in the town from Monday 1 – Sunday 7 July, offering residents more choice than ever before. Alongside a programme of performances during the week, as ever the highlights of the festival are the two main festival days on the Saturday and Sunday. The festival kicked off with two sold out nights on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 July at The Space, where the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatle’s last album Abbey Road was celebrated and received standing ovations. On Saturday July 6 the Abbey Stage was graced with performances from Hands On the Heron, the Mighty Shinkickers, JaneE.B, Mark Harrison and FolkLaw. In addition, this year the festival’s Saturday afternoon expanded to include a “Family Festival” with family-oriented performances and activities in partnership with Children’s World Charity, who brought eight world renowned circus performance acts to the

Opera festival for families to enjoy. On Sunday July 7, over thirty local, regional and international bands were packed into an afternoon of fantastic live music, including a blend of opera and hip-hop from Josephine and the Artizans, the boundless energy of Arcadia Roots, Stevie and the Masquerades, and the big band reggae of Da Fuchaman. In addition, the Love Dance Stage featured a range of dance and the talents of many local people aged from seven to 70. Speaking about the success of this year’s festival, organiser Ric Davison said: “We had the best festival kick off we’ve probably ever had with the two sold out Abbey Road performances. In addition Saltford classical flautist Chris Docherty did a great performance at Victoria Methodist Church, and we all enjoyed some wonderful jazz at Somer Dining too. “Opera in the Park on the Thursday was superb with improved seating and sound this year. We didn’t sell as many tickets as last year which was a shame, but that doesn’t take away from the success of the evening as a lot of people wandering through the park enjoyed listening to it from the

Circus contortionist outside and some people even paid to come in at half time which was great to see. “The full day of events on the Saturday was a great success too, with folk music and circus acts all over the place, which resulted in the best and most well attended family day that we have ever done. Seeing crowds of people in the park was fantastic, and in the evening we also had the Keynsham Orchestra Festival Concert which over 5000 people attended with picnics. “The attendance on the Sunday was down slightly on previous years as maybe it was a bit too hot for some people, but we still had over 10,000 attend in total. There were three music stages during the day and roughly 30 performances, mostly from bands, with the headliner Da Fuchaman receiving a tremendous reaction. “My particular highlight of the festival was Stevie & The Masquerades, who come from south Somerset and are a really top standard performing band. “We received £14,000 in donations over the two days and met what we had hoped and budgeted for which is great. The festival costs £90,000 to run, and these donations matched the

grant that we receive from the town council. “Our aim for this year’s festival was to be totally plastic free, and we had a Bristol Water bar where people could fill up their bottles. The Keynsham Wombles pick up all the litter for us all day every day and they do an absolutely fantastic job. All reports were that there was far less litter for them to pick up this year, which shows that the message got through to people. We also had reusable branded glasses at the bars for people to take home as a souvenir, and people responded well to that too. “The festival works because it has the support of the community, and is a true community event. Volunteer man hours are well in excess of 500, and we couldn’t do it without them. It really is an impressive event, and I’m humbled by the fact that it can happen so successfully - a lot of people said that it was one of the best ever, which is lovely to hear.” To keep up to date with news and updates about next year’s festival, visit: www. keynshammusicfestival.co.uk

Scouts enjoy World Jamboree in West Virginia THE adventure of a lifetime has started for a group of Scouts from our area. Two Saltford Scouts (Austin and Sam) and four Keynsham Scouts (Nathan, Emma, Lucy and James) joined two others from the Wansdyke District and flew from Heathrow on Saturday July 20 to take part in the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. The journey covered a distance of over 9000 miles, and they also had the chance to visit New York on route. The group are now camping with 45,000 Scouts from over 170 different countries at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, a 14,000 acre site dedicated to giving young people adventure in Scouting. Over 45,000 Scouting members attended the spectacular opening ceremony, which ran late into the evening with an amazing drone show. Following this, at the time of writing Bear Grylls had already been trying out the climbing facilities, while Emma and Lucy had been white-water rafting. The World Scout Jamboree is an event that brings together the world’s young people to promote peace and mutual understanding

and to develop leadership and life skills, and this year’s event is a team effort by Scouts Canada, Asociación de Scouts de México and the Boy Scouts of America. Unlike any other youth event, the World Scout Jamboree invites young people to surround themselves in diverse global cultures and make new Scouting friends during the twelve day camp. Afterwards they spend some home hospitality time with their hosts, and the Jamboree experience creates a global adventure that will last each of them a lifetime. All six Scouts started training and planning for this adventure 18 months ago, by undertaking fundraising activities such as gardening, making scarves for a Scout event, cake stalls, and bag packing, and have also attended several training camps organised by Avon County. 1st Keynsham Scouts leader Ian Carter said: “Congratulations to the six local young people. We are sure they will make great ambassadors for Scouting in Keynsham and Saltford, and we look forward to sharing more about their adventures on their return.”

n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS Camping Everybody expects Scouts to go camping and Scouting in Keynsham is no exception. Since the beginning of June nearly 200 Keynsham Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been spending time under canvas and all thanks to nearly 100 voluntary leaders and parents who led the way for them. For some, it was their first time, whilst for others they were sharing their experiences. As we write July is only half way through and we still have a 6 day Summer Camp on Exmoor and a Summer Expedition to Devon in the pipeline, so it really will be a record year when it comes to camping. But what else have they been doing?

Caving A recent Cub Scout Activity Day witnessed 24 Cubs being given their first taste of caving on the Mendips. Shock and horror on one parent’s face when they saw the pictures - it was not the Cheddar Caves experience they had in mind! Needless to say the Cubs loved it and want to go again. The Scouts “Go Below Team” look like they are going to be busy in the coming months!!!

Climbing Led by the Keynsham Scouts “Go High Team” Keynsham Cubs & Explorer Young Leaders had a great day climbing at Burrington Combe. For many it was their first time on outdoor rock face. As one young person said “It was brilliant until I looked down!” Teamwork, trust and communication all played their part.

Rafting Give us hot summer days, slow moving water and what could be better than mucking around on the river. Thanks to the Keynsham Scouts “Get Wet Team” over 150 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been out demonstrating their rope skills before launching rafts and kayaks on the River Avon. Over the last month, the sound of laughter and splashing water has filled the air!!

Could you volunteer? What a great summer!!!! Scouting in Keynsham continues to give so many young people the opportunity to bring adventure into their lives at very low cost. This is just a snapshot of the last 4 weeks - not everything they have done is mentioned. They do seek more adults to help provide even more fun - have you thought about volunteering? Simply email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk and say “I volunteer” it really is that easy!

n NEWS Tractor treat THIS year's summer fete and vintage tractor run in Compton Dando, was another success, this year making at least £4500 profit for the community association, church and hall.. One of the organisers, Ben Wall, said: “We were really pleased with how the afternoon went. The weather was not overbearing and things were busy throughout the fête field, village hall and church, where many chose to climb the tower.” There was a vintage tractor run in the morning ending up in a static display in the fête field, while people were queuing up for the chance to climb the church tower and admire the magnificent views. Mr Wall said “Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and the live musicians generated a relaxed vibe alongside perennial favourites such as the duck race, egg throwing, country games and the tractor run and display.”

Hannah Maggs gave people tractor rides all afternoon. Thanks to Gary Pearce for loan of the tractor

Celebrating success for 2nd Saltford Guides FIVE more Guides from Saltford District have earned the Baden Powell award. Fleur, Kitty, Sami, Sophie and Heather have worked hard for almost two years towards the award. They have learned new skills, extending their learning in areas they are passionate about, including plastic recycling, healthy eating, and their work with girls in other sections of Guiding, including Brownies. A special mention goes to Heather, who only qualified for the award in July 2018 due to her age, but was determined to achieve it before the Guide programme changed this summer and the Baden Powell was replaced by the Gold Award. Jo Prideaux, from Saltford Guides, said: “Heather went above and beyond to achieve all the clauses required in less than a year – well done!” The unit hosted a night of

celebration with displays of all the girls’ work and a collection of photographs of all their activities since joining Guides four years ago, aged 10. Each girl was presented with a frame, a balloon bouquet, their awards, and a

wonderful cake to share. The girls go on to new challenges, joining the thriving Ranger unit in Saltford where they can continue to plan new adventures, earn new badges and work towards their Queen’s

Guide award and Duke of Edinburgh awards. If you would like to know more about the Ranger unit for girls aged 14-25 please get in touch. saltforddistrictguides@ gmail.com

n LETTERS Council’s duty on soft plastics SINCE Tesco have piloted the soft plastics recycling in a few of their branches, and Keynsham being one of them, my black rubbish bin has been almost empty. That is totally amazing for a family household of six people. Prior to this I could hardly close my bin and regularly not be able to fit another refuse sack in. This just shows how soft plastic that would normally not be recycled. I think that it is the council's job of taking this soft plastic away with the rest of the recycling and it would encourage the majority of people to then take part and it would make a hugh impact on the non recycled waste in our area. Challenge on one-way future I HAVE an idea on how B&NES can spend a very small amount of the £1.5m they have secured to ‘future proof’ Keynsham town centre: Before they start to fritter it away on any more tin-pot ideas, how about they carry out a full & proper survey to ask EVERY household & business in Keynsham what they really think of the one-way system instead of the underhand way they went about it previously? In my opinion, this is something they should have done in the first place considering that it potentially affects everyone that resides and/ or works in the area let alone the people that visit or commute

through the town. This could be in the form of a questionnaire perhaps? … but this time have it overseen by an independent body . In fact, I challenge B&NES to do this! Regards,

Mike Heavens MH Computer Services

How Keynsham got a 999 crew I WAS an Ambulance Driver, working from Ellbroad St Ambulance Station, Bristol, (off of Old Market Street). In 1961, I was asked, along with a small number of local lads, to start a new Ambulance Station in Keynsham. We were certainly a mixed bunch. One lad was in the Red Cross, another was a nurse and I was ex Bristol Ambulance Service. These trades were thought sufficient to enable us to be Ambulance Drivers. The reason why we were formed as a team, was from the result of an accident involving a motor cyclist, who came off his motor bike in Charlton Road. He had sustained an injury to his nose, which bled profusely. He unfortunately was left on his back, and blood was allowed to enter his lungs. If an Ambulance had been near enough able to get to him in minutes, and turn him over, his life would have been saved. In those days, there was no such thing as a National Ambulance Service. Bristol Ambulance Station covered Bristol, and nowhere else. Weston s Mare covered theirs. Glastonbury Control, Radio Call

If we, in Keynsham, strayed over the boundary at the bridge over the River Avon on a Road Traffic Accident, Gloucester would have to pay Somerset for the privilege of doing their job. When we became Avon Ambulance Service, everything became much more clearer and workable. There was very little training in those days. I attended a number of operations and worked in recovery in various Hospitals, to learn how to handle airways. I also was at Frenchay Hospital on a Paramedics Course. Apart from that, it was really how keen you were to learn. I was in the Ambulance Service for 37 years and was awarded the Queens Medal for 24 years’ service on A&E. I loved every minute of it, (except for the sad bits, of course). I am indeed sorry to hear of my old station closing. Chris Face Keynsham

What a surprise - thanks Russell! WE are regulars of Keynsham Comedy Club and were very luck to be at the event available to regulars only, on July 5 at The Space. We were promised a session from a special guest, who wanted to try out material for their Edinburgh Festival performances, on a small, forgiving audience. We were amazed when Russell Howard was introduced; he got a standing ovation before, as well as after his performance. His set was near perfect, very little sign of loosing his thread and brilliant improvisation when the unexpected arose. We laugh so much, it hurt. The two other comedians (there are always three acts) Andy Askins and Steve Williams held their own and were not phased by being in such exulted company. How wonderful to have such great, live comedy, right on our doorstep. Mary Lambert by email

In Bloom judges enjoy tour of Keynsham

T

he sun shone as Keynsham in Bloom welcomed RHS South West in Bloom Judges Ian Murphy and Tony Moore on their Regional Judging Tour around Keynsham. They met a number of community groups, residents and local school children along the judging route which included Old Vicarage Green, Keynsham Railway Station, Somerdale Educate Together School, St Monica’s rooftop gardens, Abbeyfield Keynsham, the garden of Clare Pollock and finishing up meeting representatives from Keynsham Scout Headquarters. We also walked them along the High Street, viewing the floral displays at St Johns Church, our knitted displays along the way and down to the Memorial Park. After the tour everyone involved met at the Scout

Headquarters for a celebration community lunch. The judges gave a thank you speech and complimented us on our judging tour, they also paid tribute to the amount of community involvement there is here in Keynsham. The Chair of B&NES, Cllr Eleanor Jackson also joined us along the tour and community lunch. Cllr Jackson was also very complimentary of what we are doing here in Keynsham. After lunch we took the judges to meet representatives from the Somerdale Community Shed project, The Baptist Church High Street Garden and Homeavon House. We will now all have to wait until October 11th when the regional results will be announced at the RHS South West in Bloom awards ceremony in Newquay. Fingers crossed we will retain

our GOLD status. We would like to thank everyone involved this year who have contributed to our judging tour. Also thanks to Mariko from Mariko Broome Photography, who kindly came along at short notice to take our official photographs along the tour. A ‘BIG’ thank you to our very own Mark Hacker for taking on the task of watering our hanging baskets and High Street planters, without Mark in these current high temperatures, we would not have such lovely floral displays. Umbrella Trail – Our trail is running until 31st August and we hope that everyone will enjoy viewing the umbrellas, there are 17 umbrella installations in total, all decorated by local businesses, community groups and residents. You will all get the opportunity to vote for your top three umbrellas. Trial maps are available to purchase for 20p at the Library, Temple Canteen and Keynsham Civic Centre reception in Market Walk. Our Friday afternoon ladies have all excelled in producing our lovely knitted and crochet flower displays which are now on display. You can view them at St Johns Church and Keynsham Baptist Church, our wonderful butterfly is on display in the window of Age UK. Our two hearts are currently on display at Polkodot and Churches. If any local businesses would like to display them in their shop windows, please contact us. A number of people have been in touch expressing an interest

with chair Denise James

in purchasing the butterfly and hearts. We have talked with our volunteer knitters and they agree that if they can be put to some good use either in a home or educational use, we can then use the proceeds towards our next knitting and crochet project We are taking a little summer break and our next Friday afternoon club at the Royal British Legion will commence on Friday 20th September, 3 pm – 5 pm.

nTHOUGHT NEWS FOR THE MONTH Stephen M’Caw –Team Rector Keynsham Parish

Children praying, whether in a quiet bedroom, or along with their family, open by the innocence of their words and expression, a window into something so special and sacred, that we can’t help but notice it.

Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares ... IF the line ‘Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares' is familiar, you may recognise how the author of Winnie-The-Pooh wrote about it…

Little boy kneels at the foot of the bed, Droops on the little hands little gold head. Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares! Christopher Robin is saying his prayers. The author captures perfectly the

preciousness of the moment; to use a religious word: its holiness. Children praying, whether in a quiet bedroom, or along with their family, open by the innocence of their words and expression, a window into something so special and sacred, that we can’t help but notice it. Another such moment is at the bedside of those who are dying. The busy fever of life is over and the world is stripped down its absolute minimum. As the person peacefully smiles amidst the discomfort, and a prayer is shared – there is the same awareness of the holiness of such a moment. A soul is preparing to exit the world, and their room becomes nothing other than the entrance to heaven. The same: ‘Hush! Hush!

Whisper who dares!’ applies. To be present at either of these scenarios may not be ours this summer – but the beauty and holiness of the natural world, offers the same possibility of a breath taking moment to pause. It may be something such as a crowd of seagulls following a tractor, as the sun sets behind them at the end of a still clear day – or anything. The key thing is that it is a gift, it is beautiful to behold, and we have done nothing to create it. The invitation is to the same: ‘Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!’ May you be gifted with many such golden moments this summer.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We're keeping our cool ... WITH the schools finishing for the holidays and the sun shining, summer is in full swing. It’s important to remember that for those working during this time, in particular those working in uniform, the heat is more than a little uncomfortable. Regardless of this, I know officers will continue to keep our communities safe and feeling safe to ensure you are able to enjoy all that summer brings. In Avon and Somerset, we’re lucky enough to have many wonderful events take place over the summer. At the start of July, the biggest music festival in the world came to our doorstep and over 200,000 people descended on Worthy Farm for Glastonbury 2019. I was pleased to hear that crime levels at Glastonbury have remained low with 118 crimes reported this year compared to 202 in 2017, a reduction of 41.6%. I was also delighted that St Paul’s Carnival was back again for another year as it’s a fantastic

celebration of people, diversity, culture, community and music. The event proves what great things can happen when the whole city pulls together, and is a testament to the local community and the love that residents have for the place they live and work. Most recently, we celebrated Bristol Pride and officers proudly donned rainbow colours and marched alongside revellers at the annual parade. As with the other two events I have mentioned, Pride brings local people together to celebrate our differences and allows us to share the important message that hate crimes will not be tolerated. Being targeted because of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other reason is unacceptable. It's been over three months since Operation Remedy started. The operation, which focuses on knife crime, burglary and drugs in our area, has got off to a flying

start and has made notable improvements in tackling these issues. Since April, there have been 450 related offences; 33 warrants executed, 23 of which resulted in a positive outcome; a total of 287 stop searches; and 414 reports of crime from both the public and police officers. Various stolen items have been seized, recovered and returned to the owners. Drugs have been seized, including approximately 645 cannabis plants, 12 grams of Amphetamine and 1 kilo of cocaine. I know people will be pleased with the police’s increased focus on these issues. There’s still plenty to be done but I am delighted with the positive results the team have achieved so far. We will continue to work hard and send a clear message to criminals that coming into our villages, towns and cities to commit their crimes is not an option. Finally, I mentioned a new

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens initiative called the ‘Chat Bench’ that hopes to tackle isolation within the senior community. I’m delighted to read that this Avon and Somerset Police initiative has gained real traction and inspired communities as far away as the USA to start their own ‘Chat Bench’ to tackle loneliness.

Coffee morning boosts cancer charity Club is

on move

Registered Charity 202151

A LOCAL resident has held a coffee morning outside her house to raise funds for charity. Debbie Duffy has lived in Keynsham since 2008 and works as a childminder. She held her first coffee morning last year for Macmillan, where she raised over £190. Following the success of this, she held her second for Breast Cancer Care on July 13 from 10am-noon on her driveway on Cranmore Avenue. She raised just over £200 from family, friends and those passing by. She said: “I held my first coffee morning out of blue and managed to raise over £190. I agreed to do it again this year, but decided to do it for Breast Cancer Care. Lots of family and friends baked cakes for me, such as cup cakes and carrot cake, and I made teas and coffees. We asked people to make a donation based on whatever they could afford, and I raised £202.50 which I then made up to £205.We all know somebody who’s been affected by cancer and I would like to say thank you to everyone that made and donated cakes and to everybody who came.” Debbie is planning to hold another coffee morning outside her house for Macmillan on Saturday September 28 from 10am – 2pm, and she says that she will then hold a fourth one for Breast Cancer Care in July next year.

A COMMUNITY cafe set up to combat loneliness in Longwell Green has found a new home. The cafe is part of a growing number set up by Gillian Flower aided by her daughter Michelle Ford, from Hanham. It was originally based at Longwell Green Community Centre, moving to All Saints United Church, opposite Aldi, in March but this venue has proved too small. The cafe is now closed until Tuesday August 20 when it will have a regular Tuesday slot at North Common Village Hall, 16 Millers Drive, North Common, BS30 8YH from 12-3pm. It's business as usual at the existing cafes which run on Mondays and Thursdays at Speedwell and Kingswood. To find out more please call Gillian on 07948 393397 or email gill. flower@blueyonder.co.uk

Saving badgers – Avon Wildlife Trust begins major vaccination programme

AVON Wildlife Trust has begun vaccinating badgers on a nature reserve for the first time this summer. The vaccination project is designed to tackle the problem of bovine TB in badgers and show a viable alternative to the cull policy which has resulted in thousands of badgers being killed in many parts of the UK. The charity, which manages 30 nature reserves, is initially vaccinating badgers at one woodland site but aims to roll out an extensive programme of vaccination over the next four years, working with farmers and landowners to jointly find a way to tackle bovine TB in badgers. Bovine TB is spread in several ways, primarily through contact between cows, and the disease has a devastating effect on farmers and their livelihoods. There is the potential for the disease to move through badger populations and the work of Avon Wildlife Trust is an important first step, alongside other measures, to tackle this disease. It will also help wild badgers to thrive. To pay for the vaccines, equipment and training needed to continue protecting badgers through this work, Avon Wildlife Trust has launched a campaign to raise at least £20,000. To find out more and donate to the Save Our Badgers appeal go to: www.avonwildlifetrust.org.uk/ saveourbadgers. Photo courtesy of Bevis Watts

Save Our Badgers We’ve started vaccinating badgers to protect them against bovine TB and show that there’s an alternative to culling these wonderful animals. This is an important first step to saving Avon’s badgers but we need your help to do more.

Please donate today to save our badgers - The vaccine costs £40 for each badger and £200 for a family with cubs. Together we can Save Our Badgers.

Thousands of badgers across England have been killed in an attempt to halt the spread of bovine TB. Avon is the only region in the South West where badgers are not being culled. We want to keep it that way.

Firearms surrender POLICE are urging people to hand in illegal and unwanted firearms and ammunition this summer. Keynsham police station is one of five centres when people can hand in guns, ammunition, stun guns and pepper spray: Weapons can be handed in until Sunday August 4. Under the scheme you won't have to give your name, and even if you hand in an illegal item you won't be prosecuted for having it. However, guns and ammunition will be examined by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) and any crime identified will be investigated. Any evidence of crime will be kept. Unusual items may go into the NABIS reference collection or be given to museums. Everything else will be destroyed. During the last firearms surrender, in November 2017, 313 guns and 120 pieces of ammunition were handed in to Avon and Somerset police - and kept out of criminal hands. This included rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers, flare guns, starter pistols, air rifles, BB guns and a stun gun. Chief Inspector John Holt said: “Every weapon handed in helps to make our communities safer. Even lawfully-held or licensed firearms can be used to cause harm or fear in our communities if they fall into criminal hands. "This is your chance to give up an illegal gun, or tell us where one is, without giving your name. Every weapon or piece of ammunition taken off the streets could save a life.” You can find details of opening times on the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact-us/police-stations Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om0wkEt1YtQ for a short film about the firearms surrender.

n BACK TO NATURE

Wonderful chance to see swifts - and a swarm of bees! A NEAT semi-detached suburban property in Stoke Bishop hardly seemed a likely place for two unique wildlife encounters, but so it proved, writes Avon Wildlife Trust local group chairman, Dave Sage. On a superb, sunny Saturday morning in late June, 21 members packed into the beautiful garden belonging to wildlife enthusiasts Mark and Jane Glanville. We were all there to witness first hand a remarkable conservation project, namely the colonisation of the entire eaves of the house by nesting and roosting swifts! Over the last 10 years, Mark has installed 25 specially-designed nest boxes made of 12 mm plywood and painted to blend in with colour of the house rendering. This year, 16 boxes are occupied,

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group 11 with breeding pairs, all with eggs, and five with non-breeding birds. Several of the boxes contain cameras, enabling remote observation of the nesting birds on the couple’s laptop, without disturbing the birds. Their garden is breath-taking; full of a large diversity of plants, all of special value to wildlife, in particular, insects. During an informal question-and-answer

session in the garden, Mark explained that swifts are under threat from several sources. Firstly, loss of traditional nesting sites. Swifts normally nest under the tiles or in small holes under the eaves. These are lost when people carry out roof repairs. This is one of the main reasons for their decline in the UK and explains why Mark started to put up nest boxes. Putting up boxes really helps swifts. If anyone is thinking about building

or buying a box, they can find all the details and much more on the website www.bristolswifts.co.uk Two other threats to the swifts’ survival are sparrow hawks; which can only predate the birds as they slow down to enter the nests; and honey bee swarms, which can enter nest boxes and sting the chicks to death. Right on cue, a sparrow hawk was seen high above the house, being carefully monitored by several swifts. Eventually it gave

n BACK TO NATURE up its reconnaissance and flew off. As the discussion continued, we all became aware of a buzzing noise, getting louder. Sure enough, it was a large swarm of thousands of honey bees! Once we’d all sheltered in the garage, we wondered whether Mark and Jane how somehow staged this drama, but no, it was simply an amazing coincidence! Fortunately, the swarm (following the Queen within) ended up in a birch tree adjacent to the bottom of the garden. The local beekeeping association was contacted, and within an hour, the swarm had been safely and successfully installed into a box. Everyone was happy; John and Jane were relieved that no bees entered their nest boxes; the beekeeper had acquired a free and valuable new hive of bees, worth about £250; and we were thrilled that we had witnessed first-hand, not only dozens of swifts busy rearing and feeding their young, but also a key part of the life cycle of honey bees, which, in common with the swifts, are under threat from human activities, and greatly in need of our protection. Not bad for a suburban semi on

Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve a Saturday morning! Our July trip was supposed to be helping with beach cleaning in Portishead, but when the 11 members reached the beach it was both completely free of litter and of beach cleaners! It turned out we had been sent to the wrong beach! We spent the time waiting for no-one to turn up by looking at the classic zonation of brown seaweeds down the rocky beach, with channelled wrack on the top shore, followed by spiral wrack, egg wrack, bladder wrack and finally serrated wrack on the

lower shore. Each species occupies its own niche and is adapted to survive in only a narrow range of conditions. Later, we spent an enjoyable hour at the nearby Trust reserve at Portbury Wharf, where we found meadow brown, skipper and blue butterflies, a blue-tailed damselfly, cardinal beetles on hogweed, a kestrel being mobbed by a magpie, moorhen and chicks, swans and cygnets, mallard, and house martins flying low over the reed beds. The diversity of plants was impressive, including rosebay

and greater willowherb, hemp agrimony, yellow melilot, guelder rose and sea buckthorn. The 150acre site is an important wetland area, with ponds and ditches attracting rare and declining wildlife such as water voles. Portbury wharf was developed following the building of 2500 homes between it and the Portishead marina. The idea was that all householders paid an annual levy of approximately £80, which was given to Avon Wildlife Trust to develop and maintain the adjacent site. It even paid for a warden on the site. Sadly, this scheme has ceased operating, so the Trust is no longer able to maintain it to the same extent, the role being taken over by North Somerset Council. What the long-term effects of this will be remains to be seen. Hopefully it will continue to thrive, as residents benefit from a superb natural area on their doorstep, and a large diversity of wildlife has been attracted to the wetland reserve, especially migrant waterfowl over the winter. Personally, I would be more than happy to pay £80 per year to assure its long-term future.

August, 2019

n NEWS THE owners of a cat from Keynsham who recently suffered horrendous injuries have told the Voice that she has defied all the odds and is making a good recovery. Six-year-old Lucy went missing on Thursday June 27, which her owners John and Laura Walker say was out of character. When she didn’t return to the family’s home on St Ladoc Road on the Friday, the couple went round the local streets to call for her and also registered her on missing pet websites. When Lucy eventually arrived home on the Sunday morning, Laura noticed that something wasn’t right, as although she didn’t have any noticeable injuries at the time she did seem dazed. When she wouldn’t eat or drink, Laura tried to syringe water into her mouth, and it was then that she noticed her jaw was hanging down. After taking Lucy to Highcroft Vets in Whitchurch, an X-ray revealed that she had several fractures in her jaw and skull, fly strike near her tail, and her tail had also been detached from her spine. Initially the vets were concerned that she would have nerve damage and become incontinent, however the positive sign is that she is still using her litter tray. Lucy’s pet insurance only

Lucy the cat makes miracle recovery after mystery attack

covers her up to £2,500, and after her treatment surpassed this total within 48 hours, John and Laura decided to set up a Go Fund Me page to see if they could raise the remaining funds. The bill now stands at £7,000, and Laura says it will probably reach £7,500 by the time the wire is removed. Laura told the Voice: “As Lucy doesn’t normally go too far from where we live, initially we thought that she had most likely been hit by car, but her injuries have revealed she has damage at both the front and rear and

the vets say that normally she would just have injuries in one area. She might have been hit by multiple cars I guess, but one vet has mentioned that she could have been kicked in the face, which seems to be the most likely suggestion for the pattern of trauma that she has, and there are no bite marks so it wasn’t another animal. “She’s home now and was in the vets for over week and a half. Our four-year-old son has been so worried about her, but her recovery has been incredible, although she has

had to have her tail amputated, jaw wired and fly strike treated. We have to keep her indoors at the moment, which she hates, and at the beginning of August we are hoping that she will have the wire in her jaw taken out. Although she is on lots of pain medication it feels like we are almost there now, and the swelling has gone down near her tail too. “We firmly believe that charities who support humans should come first in people’s minds, but we decided to put the Go Fund Me page up to see if anyone would have anything to help support her vet bills. We have been so overwhelmed by the response of the local community and strangers to our campaign, it’s been amazing and we are really grateful. The total we have raised so far stands at £6,300 so we should have it all covered, and anything left will be given to Cats Protection.” To support the family’s Go Fund Me campaign, visit: uk.gofundme.com/f/help-withlucy-the-cat

Cossham Birth Centre is set to reopen A MUM who gave birth to her three children at Cossham Hospital's midwife-led centre has welcomed the news it will be business as usual from the autumn. Lauren Pinkett started an online petition last October after the centre temporarily closed due to an "unprecedented" number of women needing inductions and a shortage of midwives. But now North Bristol NHS Trust has confirmed the major recruitment drive has been successful and Cossham Birth Centre will reopen from October 21. Lauren, whose online petition attracted more than 4,000 names, has been involved in discussions about the future of the unit and kept informed of developments, including being told about its reopening in person. Lauren said: “Following my petition I was askThe centre will operate under an “open on arrival” model as well as the associated homebirth service. This means the existing homebirth staffing rota would provide low-risk women assessed as suitable the opportunity give birth either at

Lauren Pinkett, pictured with her children Cossham or at home. If a Cossham birth was appropriate the midwife would meet the woman at the birth centre. After the birth, the mum and baby would return home and the midwives in the homebirth team would then ensure it is ready for the next birth. The birth centre would be operational in the daytime for community midwifery clinics. However, the birth centre would be closed during the night unless a birth is taking place

as no other midwifery services run overnight. Under this model, which applies at day or night, if the home birth team is occupied with a birth then other mothers in labour would be offered Mendip Birth Centre, based at Southmead Hospital, as an alternative. Lauren, who describes her three births at Cossham as “faultless”, said: “This will be beneficial for all involved. I am thrilled for all expectant parents who still wish to birth at Cossham and the midwives who will be able to return and work back in the maternity unit. It will take some time to be fully established, but this is a great stepping stone and in keeping Kingswood’s heritage.” North Bristol NHS Trust director of Nursing and Quality, Helen Blanchard, said: “We’ve always been committed to reopening Cossham Birth Centre and we’re looking forward to offering, where we can, women the option of choosing to have their baby there. We’re sorry some women haven’t been able to give birth there these past few months but this has always been about putting all of our services on a safe and sustainable footing to

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Spotlight on Keynsham’s first cinema THE Charlton Cinema was a fixture in Keynsham life from 1936 to 1984; after that the building was used for another fourteen years as a venue for bingo. But The Charlton was not the town’s first cinema: this was at Nos 47/49 High Street, the site now occupied by Coffee1. There were two cottages on the site and between 1904 and 1908 these were rebuilt, or in reality replaced, to make a hall some 28ft wide x 53ft deep (about 8m x 16m). When the first film was shown in 1908 admission was 3d (just over 1p) and a bargain one old penny for matinées, for the pleasure of sitting on a hard wooden bench. We have no information on the entrepreneur who initiated the Keynsham Picture House but it appears that after an initial period of success it changed hands and by the autumn of 1914 was being run by a Mrs A Williams. She and her daughter had little experience of running such a business and she turned for help to a Mr W Rowland, who had far more knowledge of running a ‘cinematograph’ entertainment. After negotiation, it was decided that Mr Rowland would serve as manager of the Picture House and according to him would be paid £2 a week plus 10s for the use of his ‘bioscope’ machine. The show opened on 12th September 1914, but Mr Rowland’s expertise failed to generate any profit and it ran for only six weeks. One of the reasons given at the time was that the weather was too fine but it seems likely that the recent declaration of war may have been partially responsible for the poor attendance. Whatever the reason, there was insufficient income to pay Mr Rowland, although he was given £1 towards his out-of-pocket expenses. Dissatisfied with this settlement Mr Rowland sued Mrs Williams for the £15 he claimed she owed him and the case was heard at the Bristol Tozey Court on 7th January 1915. It took the jury only ten minutes to find in favour of Mrs Williams. No more pictures were shown and ten months later the Picture House was put up for auction. The sale was held on 20th October at

The Lamb and Lark Hotel and the successful bidder was Mr Walter Beak, who turned the premises into a “motor repair garage”. This was named St Keyna Motors and became a feature of the High Street, with its petrol pumps on the pavement and their hoses swinging across to the road. Despite the failure of the Picture House there was still perceived to be a demand for a local cinema and in November 1920 an application was made to use the Drill Hall on Bath Hill for cinema performances. This was rejected by the licensing magistrates on the grounds that the building was not suitable (although many theatrical performances and other public events had been held there). So, although the popularity of cinema-going continued to increase, Keynsham people had to travel to Bath or Bristol for their entertainment until the story of our next cinema began in 1931. Screenings for heart defects MORE than 200 young people were screened by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) at Wellsway Sports Centre. The doctors carried out ECGs and Echocardiograms that will help detect any abnormalities which, if left untreated, could result in serious illness or fatality. On average 12 young people die a week from an undiagnosed heart condition. The CRY screenings were funded by monies raised by the family and friends of former Wellsway School student Jack Boulton, who collapsed and died ten years ago at the age of 17. Jack's parents Dave and June have organised and completed many different challenges to raise funds for further research.

oris Johnson has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party, officially taking over from Theresa May as Prime Minister. After paying tribute to his opponent, Jeremy Hunt, to Mrs May and to all those who have supported him over the past few weeks, including Tory members who voted for him, he set the tone for his administration by saying that under his leadership the country would be energised once more and that the ‘spirit of can-do’ would be brought about by the opportunities that lay ahead post-Brexit. After his speech he said: ‘The time for campaigning is over and the time for work begins to unite our country and party, deliver Brexit and defeat Corbyn. I will work flat out to repay your confidence.’ Boris has only ever been the figure who could unite the

Party, the country and deliver Brexit by 31st October. As Prime Minister he will, with his charisma, drive and forward-thinking, galvanise the United Kingdom both domestically and internationally, changing the fortunes of the Party and country simultaneously. The optimism and confidence displayed by Boris are essential as we venture into the next phase of negotiations with the European Union which intends to obstruct our exit at every opportunity. Unfortunately, previous exchanges with Brussels were lacklustre and defeatist and it always seemed as though we were on the backfoot. Now, finally, it is time, under Boris’s stewardship, for the UK to cast off the shackles of self-doubt and become the success story that it was always destined to be.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

n NEWS

with Transition Keynsham

It’s not the destination that counts, but the journey SWEDISH teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has shone a spotlight on the ‘no fly’ movement which is growing across Scandinavia. Her trip across Europe this year was taken entirely by train. I’d like to think it’s easy to make that choice, but for many, taking several days to reach your holiday destination isn’t practical or affordable. However, this year, my partner, boys and I have decided to give it a go. We’re driving to Scotland, taking it slowly and visiting Northumberland and Yorkshire on the way there and back. We contemplated taking the train to Scotland, but with teens who need to always be out ‘doing,’ and staying in a rural area in mid Scotland, we’d need a car. It was cheaper to drive than to get the train and hire a car when we’re there. I used the Trainline website to calculate the carbon footprints for driving, flying and taking the train to Edinburgh from Keynsham. It told me that for four of us, taking the car and going by train were about the same (108.2kg of CO2

emissions for rail and 106.7kg by car). Flying would be a whopping 608 kg for the four of us. The train would have been much more efficient if there was only one of us taking the journey. The car journey emits 106.7kg of CO2 no matter how many people are in the vehicle, but the train journey for one passenger is only 27.5kg. Last month I wrote about the waste hierarchy – first reduce, then reuse, and if all else fails, recycle. There’s a travelling hierarchy too. Firstly, find an alternative to flying. If that’s not possible, then fly with the most efficient airline (always in economy). Atmosfair ranks airline efficiency, so you can check online. If you absolutely must fly, offset your carbon. This means totting up your emissions using an online carbon calculator and paying a company to counterbalance your carbon pollution by investing in a project that absorbs carbon or generates renewable energy. It’s not perfect, but if there’s no other option but to fly, at least it’s something.

£10m for clean air action GOVERNMENT money of up to £10 million has been announced to fund schemes that will help reduce the impact of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Clean Air Zone on businesses and residents. The funding is on top of £5.5 million already secured to implement the zone when it is launched by 2021 to reduce harmful levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution. Private cars and motorbikes will not be charged but higher emission commercial vehicles such as vans, lorries, buses, taxis and private hire vehicles will be affected. The council has put in a bid for more than £28 million to fund a package of measures to support those affected by the scheme and further improve air quality in the city. To date, it has been successful in securing £10 million to help local bus companies to upgrade older buses; provide financial support to help local businesses and individuals upgrade non-compliant commercial vehicles; and to fund a team of travel advisers to help business access the financial support on offer and encourage people to switch to greener, cleaner travel. Councillor Dine Romero, council leader, said: “While we have not yet secured all of the funding we bid for, this announcement from the Joint Air Quality Unit will allow us to move forward with Bath’s Clean Air Zone. We will continue to make our case for the full funding which is necessary to deliver the scheme successfully." The council is on track for a consultation early in the autumn on the draft charging order, which will form the legal basis for enforcing the zone when it is launched by 2021.

Creative student Sam wins award A STUDENT from Oldland Common has won a national prize for his TV and film work. Bath Studio School student Sam Pope was named BTEC creative media student of the year 2019 and received his gold award at a ceremony at Central Hall in Westminster from financial journalist and television presenter Steph McGovern. Parents and teachers accompanied award winners at the event, which was organised by Pearson BTEC to highlight vocational talent. Members of Parliament and celebrities, including Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock, were also there to hear the students’ success stories and present awards. BTECs are recognised qualifications which are heavily in demand from employers and universities. Sam, 17, who is on the autism spectrum, has been at the Bath school, which is part of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust,

for three years. He plans to go to university to study film next year. It is a future that Sam would not have thought possible when he was younger. “I was bottom of every class I was in and had an awful time at school before I came to The Bath Studio School,” he said. Head of sixth form at The Bath Studio School Max Weedon said: “I am delighted that Sam has exceeded all previous expectations while studying the TV & Film pathway at a Wellsway Multi Academy Trust school. “Sam has overcome many difficulties to thrive in his subject areas and his success is a vindication of our unique curriculum design, which puts the student at the heart of an experiential and industryfocused learning process. By treating the learner as the creative talent, for example by giving them the autonomy to direct their own movies, we find that students like Sam have

Sam Pope at the award ceremony with its host Steph McGovern and Shane Mann, one of the judges been encouraged to unlock their potential, harnessing their innate enthusiasm and motivation to create valuable intellectual property such as original films.

“We are so proud and happy for Sam that his hard work and talent has been recognised by both the professional film industry and by the awarding body at BTEC.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Greatest Hits Laura Barnett A delightful summer read. This story revolves around Cass Wheeler – a musician born in the 1950’s who has seen and experienced it all. Now as she reflects on her long career she chooses sixteen songs from her repertoire that mean a great deal. From the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate love affairs and to the moment everything was gone. As you learn from the book Cass has disappeared from the public stage and through her sixteen songs she is trying to re build her career. This is a great book that runs through the heady days of the 1960’s and up to the present day, describing the music industry through Cass’s career, friendships and ambitions. War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy, as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant It is the eternal story of Natasha, Pierre, and Andrei, young noble Russians who start their first step in the cruel high society of St Petersburg and Moscow. They open us the door of an Old-world with its ballrooms and society circles, the cold winters and the grandeur of the palaces. At no point you have the duplicity of who are the crafty ones in the book and what they are ready to do, Tolstoy gives you the power over his characters.

Natasha, young countess, protected by a lovely family circle who doesn’t know how to act in the real world. Pierre who doesn’t understand what is expected from him, and get entangled in an unfriendly family who wants only his fortune. Andrei freshly married, who thinks his life reserves him no surprise anymore and look at it with sceptics eyes and boredom. With the background of the Napoleon’s invasion, their lives are at a turning point, each of them will experience a situation close to death making them grew up. This historical classic novel will keep you reading for a long time, and the characters will stay with you long after you closed the last page. Adult Non-Fiction

The Boy who followed his father into Auschwitz Jeremy Dronfield Reviewed by one of customers, Mr John Taylor An inspiring story of the Kleinman family. The book gives an insight into the true account of the horrors of the thousands who were forced to endure the Nazi dominance of the concentration camps during World War 2. Also how it was possible to outlive the brutality in defiance of the most terrible odds, on account of family love. A lesson to humanity which we all should need to become aware of.

The extraordinary story of the man who ran 401 marathons in 401 days and changed his life forever - Ben Smith Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Ben Smith is from Portishead and I met him at the launching of his 401 challenge. It seemed to us a crazy idea; everyone was sceptical of the capacity of one to do 401 marathon in 401 days. Ben’s story can touch so many of us, he was bullied and thought of dying. He fortunately spoke about his pain to his family who helped him out of this dark place. Few years later, he decided to take this pain and make it a strength. He will quit his job and run around UK, raise awareness against bullying in local schools on the way, raising money for charities. What is interesting about Ben is his capacity of being so personable, he always listened to stories of people who came out to run with him, and their stories became a part of his. His action was acclaimed and he received the BBC award for Sport Personality 2016. I heard Ben is on a next challenging project, I will be looking forward to that.

Why not try: Children’s Fiction

Runaway Robot Frank Cottrell-Boyce From the pen of the very popular author, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, we met Eric! Eric is six foot tall, likes to sing, is super polite but he is a little rusty and is hand keeps dropping off. Yes Eric is a robot – a little bit old but super strong. He meets Alfie in an airport and soon mischief and adventure follow. My favourite passage is when Alfie says to Eric “Let’s catch the bus” and poor Eric takes the command literally and forces a bus to a stop and grabs its bumper to take it to Alfie. As you can see many funny things happen along the way until true friendship shines through.

Ark Angel Anthony Horowitz The fast paced adventures of Alex Rider are back. After a brief encounter with the son of a billionaire Nikolei Drevin, Alex finds himself in the middle of a huge crime hunt. This takes him to investigate Ark Angel – a suspicious space hotel and a potential threat to the world. A perfect spy novel with twists and turns set in the world of astronauts and space stations.

n CRICKET

Marcus gets set to hang up his bat MARCUS Trescothick, Keynsham’s most famous sporting son, is to retire from cricket at the end of the season. The 43-year-old featured in 76 Tests for England and was a central figure in the 2005 Ashes victory over Australia. And the former pupil of Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common is within touching distance of scoring 20,000 first class runs for Somerset after making his county debut all the way back in 1993. Cricket is a game of statistics so here are a couple more ... 5,825 Test runs at an average of 43.79 and 4,335 one-day international runs - more than any other England opener. For Somerset, there is the small matter of more than 800 appearances and 28,000 runs in all formats as well as 52 firstclass centuries. And this exceptional career

all began at Keynsham Cricket Club where he followed in the footsteps of father Martyn, a highly respected club player who made two appearances for Somerset 2nds. One man who remembers very clearly just how good Marcus was from the very start is former Keynsham captain John Courtney who, at the age of 62, has just helped England Over 60s defeat their Australian counterparts. He said: “Marcus must have been eight or nine when he started coming down the ground with Martyn for Saturday matches, and he would spend hour after hour in the nets, getting us all to bowl at him.” It was not too long before the prodigiously talented Marcus made a memorable first team debut at the age of only 14. John added: “I ran him out for nought without facing a ball! He was carrying a bit of extra weight

Your Voice is getting louder!

Marcus Trescothick, who is retiring after 26 years with Somerset CCC back then and I hadn’t factored that into the situation, but he obviously went on to better things very soon after.” Young Marcus also worked for John who, back then, ran the Classic Bat Company shop on Keynsham High Street. He said: “Marcus would come in after school to help out, work on our bats, dispatch goods and sell stuff out of the showroom. “He scored something like 3,000 runs over the season as a 14-year-old, and I remember that all of us at the shop had a bet amongst ourselves about how many Tests and one-day internationals he would go on to play for England. “It wasn’t a case of ‘if’ ... we all knew that he was so good that it

was just a matter of time.” A stellar career also went on to include standing in as England captain in two Tests and 10 oneday internationals while John pointed out that Marcus can also be referred to as the ultimate allrounder as he kept wicket for his country in five one-day clashes – and took wickets as well! Just about the only honour missing from a superb sporting CV is winning the County Championship with Somerset. And it would complete a remarkable fairytale if Marcus, who dropped down to the 2nds earlier this summer after losing form, can regain his place in the side and help his beloved county win an historic first-ever title at the end of the season.

CHARLIE Taylor (16) held his nerve to pitch Bristol Buccaneers to a 25-22 victory over Newton Brewers in Devon. "It was a great game that ebbed and flowed all afternoon but our attitude as a team to keep fighting came through and got us the victory," said Buccaneers manager Richard Evans. At Somerdale, the Bristol Bats went down 20-10 to a very strong Yeovil Whirlwinds team. The Brighton Brewers forfeited their scheduled game against the Badgers. All teams resume their schedules on Sunday August 4. The Badgers host the Herts Hawks in a AA BBF double header while the Buccaneers face off against Weston Jets in the SWBL. Both are at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham and start at noon. The Bats will travel to Plymouth to take on the Mariners in their next SWBL league match.

n FOOTBALL KEYNSHAM Town will be kicking off their first season in the Toolstation League, Premier Division with all but one of the squad that won the Division One championship last season. Striker Kyle Box departs to pursue his career elsewhere, whilst Keynsham welcome back former player Ben Harris. Manager John Allen and his coaching team have been putting the players through their paces in readiness for the Ks first Premier Division match in 12 years away to Bradford Town on Saturday August 3rd. Two away friendlies saw a 2-0 win at Wells City, with Mike Grist & Tom Knighton on the scoresheet, and a 1-1 draw at Bishop Sutton (Matt Brown scoring from the penalty spot). This was followed by a 3-1 home win against Almondsbury, with Matt Brown, Adey Harvey & Luke Banfield finding the back of the net. The Ks remaining 2 friendlies, at home to Southern League opposition Paulton Rovers and Yate Town, still had to be played at the time of going to press. The first home league game will be against Wellington on Tuesday 6th August, kick off 7.45pm. Then the Ks have been drawn at home in the Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round to local rivals Brislington on Saturday 10th August, kick-off 3.00pm. The clubs being just a mile and a half apart must make this closest local derby in the cup this season. There will also be a Race Night held in the clubhouse after the game; admission to the Race Night is free and everyone is welcome! Season tickets are now on sale for the club’s Premier Division

matches. Adult tickets cost £80, which represents a good saving over the 20-home league matches (normal match day price £6). Under 18s remain free of charge, and tickets for our more mature supporters (65+) cost £55 (normal match day price £4). The Ks first home games of the season at Crown Fields are as follows: Tuesday 6th August Wellington (League) 7:45pm kick off Saturday 10th August Brislington (FA Cup) 3:00pm kick off Tuesday 20th August Roman Glass St George (League) 7:45pm kick off Saturday 24th August Clevedon Town (League) 3:00pm kick-off Saturday 31st August Helston Athletic (FA Vase) 3:00pm kick off Off the field, the club have managed to secure a major deal with high-flying local business Polar Bear Windows as the club’s main sponsor. Club Chairman

CuStomer DeDiCateD LogiStiCS

Adrian Cole said: “This is a massive coup for our club. Polar Bear’s ethos has always been to improve the living standard of their customers through delivering great products and providing amazing customer service. They pride themselves on always putting the customers’ needs first, which is something

we try to do with our handful of volunteers at Keynsham Town FC. Polar Bear’s Managing Director, Mark Price, is an influential businessman in our local community, and I am sure his marketing expertise can only help the club maintain its progression over the next few years. I must also thank Smart Computers for their valued sponsorship and support for the last 8 years – without their input, I doubt the club would be where it is now”. There is much to look forward to in the coming weeks and for the season as a whole. More club news will follow in our September issue. You can keep up with the club’s news on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB "FRYS final two games in May were a comfortable 60-33 win against Long Ashton. The following week Frys travelled to BAC. A close game saw BAC run out 43-40 winners with Frys only taking a single point. Imperial were Frys visitors in the first week of June. In another close game, Frys held out to win 47-42 and go to second in the table. The next game saw Frys head to Avonvale. Despite an 18-0 lead after 9 ends from rink 2, Avonvale countered on the other rinks to keep in touch. Avonvale were able to take and hold the lead late, with Frys only taking 2 points from a 45-48 loss. Thursday 20th June: The first half of the Bristol and District came to an end Thursday night as Frys hosted bottom club Henleaze 'A'. Henleaze dominated most of the finding themselves 12 shots up at the halfway point. After falling behind, rink 3 were able to stall Henleaze and eventually taking the rink lead. With rinks 1 and 2 also gaining a few shots, Frys closed the gap to 3, but loose

ends on rinks 1 and 2 gave Henleaze the 12 shot lead back. This did not deter Frys as they gradually pulled it back. Set up with rink 3 winning by 9, Frys were 5 shots back with rink 2 still with 3 ends to play. Frys skip found a way through with the last bowl on the 15th end, saving 3 shots to Henleaze, closing the gap to 4. 3 shots were picked on the 16th end, leaving Frys needing 1 to tie. Frys number 3 trailed the jack to lie shot. Henleaze were unable to change the shot, and with Frys skip missing the line, it left the score tied at 49, with Frys taking 4 points leaving Frys 5th at the halfway point. Scores: Rink 1: 1320; Rink 2: 14-16; Rink 3: 22-13; Frys 49-49 Henleaze 'A' (4-6). Tuesday 25th June: Frys began this seasons cup games with a Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy match Tuesday against Bristol. An attacking start from Frys on rink 1 saw them move the mat up on the opening end, with Frys winning the opening end all 3 rinks. Not long later, Bristol

Triple Day Winners got into their stride opening up a 16 shot lead, with rinks 1 and 2 gaining good advantages. However, Frys were not done yet, with rink 3 holding tight, Frys were able gain the rink lead, and with rink 1 pulling back their deficit. Rink 2 also pulled shots back closing the game up. Some big shots from the skips on both sides, kept the game in the balance. The game came down to the final end, with Frys 4 shots back. Frys number 2 covered the jack, and a second shot put, in left the game to the skips. With Frys final bowl, the skip knocked

a short bowl into the head, and followed through with his own bowl, looking like Frys held the required shots to take the game into an extra end. With Bristol's skip not changing anything with the last bowl, the number three's agreed 3 shots to Frys, but the measure for the 4th shot went in Bristol's favour with Frys missing out by a few millimetres in what was a great advert for the game of bowls. Score: Frys 50-51 Bristol Thursday 27th June: The second half of the league season started with a trip to

Rinks 1 and 2 were much closer, keeping Severnvale in the game to the halfway point. After halfway, rinks 3, 4 and rink 1 continued to pull Frys away. With Severnvale having no answer, Frys won all 4 rinks in a 105-59 win to advance to the 1st round. Scores: Rink 1: 23-12; Rink 2: 22-19; Rink 3:31-11; Rink 4: 29-17; Frys 105-59 Severnvale.
