Council approves longer hours despite complaints

Concrete firm 'blights lives of neighbours'

A CONCRETE manufacturer in Keynsham has been given the go-ahead to operate for up 12 hours a day, despite “countless” complaints from residents. Neighbours say their lives have been “blighted” by noise, cement dust, blocked drains and vibrations from HGVs since 4 Concrete moved into Avon Mill Lane in December 2019. The firm’s hours had been restricted to between 7.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday, but now it has permission to fill and dispatch concrete mixing vehicles between 6.30am and 6.30pm every weekday. Bath and North East Somerset Council granted the new hours on a one-year trial basis – and only if noise-blocking barriers that are going up prove to be effective. From Page 1 said: “Throughout the year, 4 Concrete’s operations have given rise to countless complaints. 4 Concrete violate the operating hours on an almost daily basis. “Based on their track record, there can be no expectation that the conditions would be followed. It would be a mistake to grant further permissions that lead to increasing industrial operations, including into nighttime hours.” The site was previously used as a railway yard, and then for light industrial purposes. Mixing concrete is more intensive and classed as a “general industrial” use. Keynsham East ward member Councillor Andy Wait said residents bought their homes knowing the site was there but their lives completely changed when 4 Concrete arrived. He said: “From that time there were countless breaches of their planning conditions, in terms of hours, noise, vibration and dust. “The behaviour of 4 Concrete has had a huge negative impact on these residents. Noise starts very early and goes late into the evening. Residents are regularly woken at night. “I fear for the mental health of these residents. Their lives have been blighted – we have a duty of care.” Officer Sarah James told committee members there was an existing use on the site and they needed to consider the application before them – to extend the hours and erect acoustic fences. Her colleague Christopher Griggs said the acoustic fences

would reduce the impact on residents – and only when they were up would the extended operating hours be allowed. The permission would last for one year, and then the company would have to reapply if it wanted to make the change permanent. Councillor Vic Clarke cast doubt on whether the acoustic fence would work when the gates to the site would be open for much of the time, adding: “I’m not convinced we should allow an experiment with people’s livelihoods and wellbeing. We should be more considerate.” Councillor Eleanor Jackson’s proposal to reject the application due to the impact on residents failed. Supporting a proposal to approve the application, committee chair Matt McCabe said: “This is not the right site for a concrete production business but that’s not the decision before us. “The barrier will make an instant difference [to the noise level] as long as all the activity takes place behind it. There’s a role for enforcement here.” The committee voted to the approve the application. The firm also operates between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays, with no working allowed on Sundays. No changes were proposed to these hours. The committee said it should be able to work under the original hours – 7.30am to 5.30pm – on bank holidays. 4 Concrete declined to comment. Families tackle food waste

MORE than 220 households in Keynsham are taking part in a project to reduce food waste. Food waste makes up 30% of what is thrown away in household rubbish bins in Bath and North East Somerset. And although the district council has recorded a rise in overall recycling rates during the Covid-19 pandemic, the amount of food waste ending up in household rubbish bins unnecessarily needs to be reduced. The council is running the six-week local food waste project in November and December with 229 households in Keynsham, to find out what the barriers to recycling might be and how it can help make the process easier for people. Working with its food waste partner GENeco, the council is offering residents food waste reduction tips and information leaflets, and any household not currently recycling food waste

Recycling your food waste can be done in three easy steps: n Line your kitchen caddy with a biodegradable liner or newspaper. n Recycle all your raw and cooked food waste including fruit and vegetable peelings, plate scrapings and bones. n Empty this into the larger food waste bin, which will be collected with the rest of your recycling.

cabinet member for climate emergency and neighbourhood services, said: “The food waste we collect from your homes is taken to a local processing plant and turned into compost, for agricultural use and to provide electricity to local homes, so we need to make use of every bit of it.” Residents can see for themselves the process of how food waste is turned into electricity and biogas. The council has partnered with recycling and renewable energy company GENeco to produce a video showing the ‘circular economy’ where nothing is wasted. To watch the film, visit https://youtu.be/2I8Tjb4Fy-Q To find out more about the council’s recycling services, how to order a food waste caddy or join the collections, visit https:// beta.bathnes.gov.uk/recycling For tips on how to reduce food waste and save money, visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

will receive new food bins and caddies. After the project is completed, the council will review whether food waste recycling in the pilot areas increased and invite residents to fill in a questionnaire to find out their views. If an upturn in recycling is seen, the project will be rolled out to other areas of the district in 2021. Households chosen to take part were being notified by letter. Councillor David Wood,

Winter tips for your pets

A

s the days get shorter and temperatures fall, it is important to remember our beloved pets and think about what we can do to keep them warm and safe. Walking our dogs in winter means that we are often out in the dark. Having your pet wear a reflective collar or coat will help them be seen. Keeping them on the lead is important so they do not dart out into traffic. Dogs are sensitive to the cold, some more so than others. If your dog is elderly, thin or has thin fur, consider a warm coat or jumper for them. Snow, ice and rock salt can be irritating to paws, so wiping their paws, along with a good rubdown with a clean dry towel after the walk, is important. Avoiding icy areas will help avoid slipping and potential injury for both you and your pet. Cats may be independent creatures, but they rely on us to give them a warm, safe haven from the cold. Keeping them inside during harsh winter weather whenever possible is a good idea. If they do go out, make sure they have easy access back into the house or a warm shelter outside. Cats often hide under the bonnet of your car because the engine provides some warmth, so be sure to check there or at least tap on your bonnet before starting the car. Antifreeze and rock salt are both toxic to pets if ingested. Make sure they do not have access to either of these, and again be sure to wipe their paws when they come in. Rabbits and guinea pigs need to be kept warm as well, either by moving their shelter indoors or providing heating, extra bedding and covering their hutch during the winter. Make sure the hutch is off the ground and is leak-proof. If you have any questions about winter care for your pets, please be sure to speak to your veterinary team. We are here to help. Stay safe and warm. Kristine Clark DVM, MRCVS

Barclays to close

BARCLAYS is to close its branch in Keynsham’s High Street on February 24. The bank said that while the number of counter transactions has risen in the past two years, 84% of branch customers also do their banking online and by telephone. In the past 12 months, 29% of the branch's customers have been using nearby branches. “We’ve identified that only 34 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking.” Barclays advises that customers can use post offices and LINK cash machines to access services. Following the closure, its nearest branches will be in Regent Street, Kingswood, and Broadmead, Bristol. A rapid increase in online and mobile banking and a decrease in the use of physical branches has led to many of them disappearing from our high streets.

Barclays said: “With customers visiting our branches less and less each year, we must constantly assess how and why our branches are used and make decisions based on that insight. There will be times when this means that we will make the difficult decision to close a branch.”

Jobless turn to food bank KEYNSHAM Food Bank has seen a rise in demand from people who have been made redundant due to the pandemic. Coordinator Alan Hale said: “For many people the impact of coronavirus on their job has been delayed by the furlough scheme. “But we are now seeing an increase in the number of people being made redundant or who have had their hours cut and seen their income drop. “We anticipated this and have built up our stock levels to support those in need. “No one should go hungry while waiting for a benefit payment and we also don’t want people who are suddenly out of work to spend all their savings before they seek support. “Our message to anyone facing food crisis is that we are here to offer food support and signpost to other help and advice.”

One of the fairy doors that Lucy Russell put in place

December, 2020

Lucy's trail of fairy A TRAIL of fairy doors has enchanted families using a popular path in Keynsham. Five hidden doors were put in place along the wooded walk between the railway station and the Chocolate Quarter, with an accompanying worksheet for children and the young at heart. The temporary trail was the work of Lucy Russell, a freelance graphic designer, who made the downloadable activities sheet available for free via Instagram. The trail has now been removed because of weather damage, but a festive version will reappear for Christmas. Lucy, 30, explained: “The wooded walk near the Chocolate Quarter was one of the first places my husband and I explored after we relocated to Keynsham. “We regularly started walking in that area, spotting bats, squirrels and hearing owl hoots. It has a lovely atmosphere, and because it was well lit and had a definitive start and end, I

thought it would be perfect for a trail of some sort. “The fairy door concept has been lovingly borrowed and adapted by many. I'm lucky to have seen many examples scattered across woodland, parks and gardens. I've always admired the idea and wanted to create my own version. Fitting the doors to trees along the path required a certain amount of determination. “I’m sure those that spotted me must have been perplexed. I was covered in mud, scrambling around with a bag of moss and a hammer.” Each door was wooden and hand-painted with non-toxic paint. Lucy also used natural moss and cork to add details. The trail, which Lucy publicised on the Keynsham Community page on Facebook, attracted a delighted response from parents. “Ever since the Facebook post, my phone has been buzzing. Have your say on the Care homes get iPads way we live and work

PEOPLE are being asked for their views on the future of housing, jobs and transport over the next 20 years. The West of England Combined Authority wants those living and working in the region to help shape the Spatial Development Strategy. As the region’s population grows and people live longer, the amount and type of housing needed is changing. Covid-19 has also altered the way many people work, travel and spend their leisure time. The strategy will help make sure residents have the homes they need, where they want to live, with the connections to get to job opportunities, education and leisure. It will also ensure new development contributes towards reducing carbon emissions, and brings improvements for nature and sustainability. The authority is working

with Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils, stakeholders and residents to develop the plan. Residents and businesses can give their views via a survey on the West of England Combined Authority until December 14. Go to https://www.westofenglandca.gov.uk/future-of-the-region/ Councillor Tim Ball, cabinet member for housing, planning and economic development at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “The Spatial Development Strategy will directly affect how people in Bath and North East Somerset live, work and enjoy leisure time, so I’d encourage everyone in the district to submit their views. “Over the next two decades we need development that meets people’s needs but is also sustainable to help meet our goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.”

RESIDENTS of a Saltford care home are among those who will be able to keep in contact with loved ones virtually, thanks to the provision of new iPads from the NHS. Twenty-seven care homes across Bath and North East Somerset will receive 39 new iPads over the coming weeks. Among them is Kingfisher Lodge Care Centre in Saltford, where one of the residents now shares her poetry with other residents via an iPad. Manager Claire Sinclair said: “Every piece of technology that we can have to help residents during this difficult time is much appreciated and a huge bonus.” As well as enabling residents to keep in touch with loved ones via video calls, such as FaceTime or Zoom, the mobile touchscreen technology will also provide a vital resource for care home staff. The iPads will enable them to work with GPs to provide a Covid-secure virtual ward round. The iPads will also assist the Care Quality Commission to

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society This picture is a reminder of a time when road improvements were carried out without the help of JCBs and similar machinery. It shows a gang of men working on the improvement of Burnett Lane in 1923. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

N

ext year sees the 70th anniversary of the Festival of Britain. Staged in the summer of 1951, this was a national exhibition and fair held in London. For a nation that had suffered years of war and austerity, it was a chance to celebrate and enjoy the inventiveness and creativity of our scientists and technologists. The festival inspired communities across the country to do something similar, and in Keynsham a mini-festival was organised. An ‘At Home’ event included pony rides, a flower auction, sideshows and refreshment stalls; dances were held at the Women’s Institute hut and by the Young Conservatives; a party of Dutch visitors was entertained. However, it was Mary Fairclough and the Keynsham and Saltford Arts Club who rose to the occasion and provided the centrepiece of the programme, with an imaginative Keynsham Festival Exhibition that ran from June 16 to 21. The original idea was an exhibition of arts and crafts, but it evolved into a display that combined this with an historical theme that led to many older pieces of local craft work being included, lent by individuals and businesses. Arts and crafts embraced a wide range of activities including book-binding, smocking, sculpture, leatherwork and weaving, as well as the painting, embroidery and woodwork that one might find today. Historical items were entered under the heading of ‘Old Keynsham’. Rural crafts were represented by saddlery,

Blacksmith Bob Trott submitted a variety of horseshoes he had made over the years, including some for hunters and race-horses, with some very old double-shoes dating from the time when oxen ploughed the fields. Another unusual item from earlier times on the farm was an old harvest field ‘lowance’ jug, which held 49 pints and was used to refresh the thirsty reapers during harvest. Fry’s contributed a large exhibit of interesting items, including a pestle and mortar once belonging to Anna Fry, head of the business in

Modelling exhibits included some fine pieces of precision engineering 1787, and the sample box used by the first of the company’s commercial travellers. Examples of gowns and dresses up to a hundred years old were displayed, while ancient history was represented by a mosaic found at Somerdale and a model of the Roman Villa found on the site. One display included the seven caps earned by local man Harry Shewring, who played rugby for England between 1905 and 1907. The exhibition was held at the Fear Institute on the High Street and was opened by Colonel Dainton, chairman of Keynsham Urban District

inspired a community hit

The rural crafts display showed many local skills now lost Council, with a speech that was reported in full in the Bath Weekly Chronicle. To accompany the exhibition, a ten-page booklet was written by Mary Fairclough, giving a detailed account of the history of Keynsham. The event was very popular and it was this exhibition, together with the booklet, that first made people realise Keynsham had a history worth discovering. The festival was a great success; this extended to the finances. A copy of the accounts exists, and income from all events totalled £97 13s 7d (£97.68) against expenses of £33 18s 5d (£33.92).

We're foraging for the great taste of nature BORN of a love of cooking, walking and foraging, Heavenly Hedgerows produces preserves and liqueurs mostly from foraged fruit and berries. The company prides itself on making all-natural preserves without the use of commercial pectins. Their liqueurs are made with foraged berries and steeped for a year before decanting. “Unlike a lot of bigger companies, we don’t use any essence for flavour, just the fruit, the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit,” says owner Chris Westgate. All their foraged produce is sustainably hand-collected and made in Keynsham. “We’re blessed to be surrounded by countryside and farmers who know how we work and allow us to collect wild foods from their land,” Chris explains. “I started out doing some

markets back in 2008 and have grown the business organically around our young family. “In 2014, I branched out a bit and started to supply hotels/ restaurants with a ‘not foraged - still fabulous’ range. “I love spring, with all the wild greens that the new season brings after a long dark winter. But it’s autumn which really excites me. “In September, sometimes through to early December, I’m on the lookout for greens, which make another brief appearance before winter - crow garlic, bittercress, nettles, ground elder - alongside the berries that make up Heavenly Hedgerows’ produce - sloes, damsons, wild plums, elderberries, rosehips, crab apples and hawthorns.” To take advantage of free delivery to Keynsham and surrounding areas, simply enter KBS31 at checkout - www. heavenlyhedgerows.co.uk

Help us bring festive cheer Easing isolation

KEYNSHAM Mencap is seeking support for its Christmas appeal. Most of its clubs have been forced to close for the past nine months, with weekly subscriptions halted, and all physical fundraising events have been cancelled. Despite these challenges, the charity made a commitment to remain connected to its community and provide activities that members could still enjoy. “A second lockdown not only put additional pressure on us financially but more importantly caused more confusion for our members and their families,” said fundraiser Amanda Leonard. “We want to make Christmas as special as possible. We will continue reaching out to our members, provide activity packs, sweets and treats, Christmas crafts, doorstep visits, Christmas carols, Zoom sessions and a virtual Christmas concert.”

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, there has been no opportunity to organise a fundraising event. So the charity is holding an online Christmas Appeal to recoup some of the money lost due to the club closures. The appeal was due to be launched on Friday November 27 and run to Saturday December 19, rounding off with a virtual raffle, poetry reading and online Christmas concert performed by the Music Man Project. Updates about the appeal can be found on the Keynsham Mencap Facebook page and at www.keynshammencap.org.uk Donations can be made through www.easydonate.org/SNOW or by text. THE Bristol-based St Monica Trust is providing £480,000 for organisations across the city, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The trust’s director of community impact, Adam Rees, said: “While the coronavirus pandemic has affected all aspects of life, its consequences have significantly impacted older people. “We are providing funding for community development projects that will support community activities to restart and to work with older people.” An example of the devasting effect of lockdown was given by Kathleen, a retired nurse in Bristol, who founded a creative writers’ group that had to suspend activities because of Covid restrictions. She said: “The friendships formed within the group were very precious. When everything stopped it was shattering. “One gentleman was such a bright spark and a really good artist. He was reduced to lying on a sofa with a blanket over himself, not moving.” The Grateful Society is contributing a further £90,000 for the inner city and East Bristol. In total, the funding will provide six organisations with £95,000 over three years

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Let’s start the New Year with kindness and tolerance

I

’M sure many of us will be happy to see the end of 2020, which turned out to be an extraordinarily unusual year and a time that challenged us all. Our personal and professional lives changed beyond any of our expectations, and our communities and businesses have continued to adapt during the pandemic. It has also been a year where people across the country have lost loved ones as a result of this awful virus. My thoughts are with those families who will be having a very different Christmas and I wish them all the best for the New Year. This year has also been a time when we saw steps in the right direction for social change. In response to the horrific events in Minnesota that resulted in the death of George Floyd, we

witnessed powerful protests take place across the world and businesses realising the need to support and empower the BAME community. The global pandemic further highlighted the disparities and divides along racial and socio-economic lines and the disproportionate impact coronavirus has had on many communities. This year has served as a stark reminder that we still have so much to do, but such awareness puts us in a better position to start making these changes. On a positive note, during the global health emergency we have seen acts of kindness and wonderful stories of people and organisations coming together to support each other during these unprecedented times. The pandemic has proven the impor-

tance of working together and supporting each other. I’m sure there are still many challenges ahead, but I am reassured that we will face these together. It is undeniable that we will have a very different Christmas to the ones we usually have. However, there will still be officers, police staff, paramedics and other emergency colleagues who will be working during the festive period to keep us safe. Regardless of coronavirus, it is always an extremely busy time of year for those who work in our emergency services and I know they always go above and beyond to keep us safe. I want to say a massive thank you to those in the NHS, police and other emergency services, as well as those in voluntary and charity organisations, for their

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens hard work to support local communities during the festive period and for their efforts in protecting local people throughout this challenging year. Let’s start the New Year with kindness and tolerance towards one another, and continue to bring our communities together in 2021.

Arts trail proves an online hit THE Cam Valley Virtual Arts Trail has been a big success. Organisers moved the annual event online because of Covid-19 restrictions. It was a lot of work for all involved, but the website has proved a hit. Viewers were able to look at and buy artwork from more than 30 creators. Artists also provided mini demonstrations, such as how to create a botanical print from flowers and leaves, and how to make a mini painted heart. The event included studio tours, interviews and videos showing artists’ techniques. Group chair Karen George said: “A massive thank-you to everyone that supported our first ever virtual arts trail. It was certainly a different experience to our live face-to-face event. “We would like to thank all the artists who shared their work. Their effort to make this virtual event a success certainly paid off.” The event was originally due to end on November 8. But because of the second lockdown, organisers decided to keep the webpage open for the rest of the month. Visit https://www.camvalleyartstrail. co.uk/2020-arts-trail.html

Do you recognise these bikes? The police are trying to trace their owners - if you can help, see the contact details in the story below

Ensure your children obey the Covid rules

T

he Neighbourhood Policing Team have been busy over the last few months. During the latest lockdown, although people are supposed to stay at home and only go out if it is essential, a number of people continue to breach this. It falls to the police to enforce these issues, and we have extra staff working trying to keep up with the reported breaches. What many won’t know is that, although juveniles cannot be fined for breaching Covid regulations, their parents/carers can. Please bear this in mind and ensure your children are sticking to the rules. The last thing we want to do is issue fines during these challenging times. n We continue to have issues with creeper-style burglaries to outbuildings and sheds, with cycles and motorcycles being targeted. We recently recovered the bikes pictured here but are yet to find owners for them. If you know someone who has had a bike stolen or recognise any

with PC James Evans of these bikes, please get in touch by either phoning 101, and asking for the Keynsham Neighbourhood Team, or emailing 3803@ avonandsomerset.police.uk With that in mind, please record your bike’s frame so it can be identified if stolen. You will find the frame number on the bottom of the bike, generally punched into the frame under the bottom bracket, which is the bit that holds the crank and pedals. As stated, we have had a number of motorbikes and mopeds either being stolen from our local

area or being brought here and ridden around the streets and parks. If you own a bike and have to leave it on the street for any reason, please lock it. A decent chain and a disc lock should prevent bikes being taken; you might be surprised how easy it is to bypass the ignition on a lot of bikes, especially mopeds. n This month we conducted a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant search on a property in Keynsham, with both money and drugs being seized. The investigation is still ongoing but we are looking at a positive outcome. A lot of information for warrants comes from intelligence supplied by the public. You can do this in a number of ways - stopping and talking to police when you see them; phoning them on 101; using the Avon and Somerset Police website; contacting your local Neighbourhood Policing Team; or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This information help us build a picture of what is going on in our local areas and we can then plan how best to tackle it. We need this information to tackle crime in your neighbourhood, so please let us know what’s happening. n At this time of year, the change in the weather catches people out and our road accident figures go up. You can do your bit by checking the roadworthiness of your vehicle. We check police vehicles at the start of every shift, so with three shifts a day our cars get and need a lot of maintenance. I’d recommend once a week checking your fluid levels, tyre pressure, tread depth and lights. Just these basic checks will help keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition and prevent accidents. n With Christmas around the corner, who knows what celebrations will look like this year? Stay safe and follow the guidelines, and hopefully we can all enjoy the festive period with family and friends.

Sex predators warning AVON and Somerset Police are renewing their call to parents to be aware of their children’s online activity, following an increase in reports of young children falling victim to sexual predators who target them online. Detective Chief Inspector Larisa Hunt, lead for Avon and Somerset Police’s internet child abuse and child exploitation team Operation Topaz, said: “I would urge that you please talk to your children about online safety. Know who they are

engaging with online and make sure your children understand that people may not always be who they seem to be. “There’s also never been a better time to review your parental controls on all of your household devices.” DCI Hunt adds: “We don’t want to alarm parents unduly. Take a look at the websites and resources available and keep the lines of communication open with your children. There is loads of advice and support for parents and young people out there.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

HE Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, has written to me outlining the Government’s Covid-19 funding for charities, including several in North East Somerset. The package adds on £150 million that has been released from the Government’s Dormant Assets Scheme. This is capital that has remained unused in dormant accounts and will now be spent on charities, communities and individuals affected by the pandemic. In a year of unprecedented disruption, people have relied upon charities more than ever, which is why, as a crucial part of the Government’s response to coronavirus, £750 million is being given to charitable organisations, by far the most generous in Europe. This money will support more than 13,000 larger bodies that operate on a national basis with local branches, such as St John Ambulance, NSPCC and the British Red Cross, as well

as smaller, constituency-based charities. From the £200 million Coronavirus Community Support Fund, I am pleased to announce that 13 charities in North East Somerset have, so far, received £288,527. These include the Royal Osteoporosis Society (£100,000), Leonard Cheshire Disability (£80,895) and Swan Advice Network (£22,580). This is, undoubtedly, a welcome boon in addition to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, enabling charities and social enterprise schemes to continue their vital activity. The Government is working at pace to distribute the funds whilst ensuring taxpayers’ money is spent effectively and reaches those who need it. I am delighted the Government is taking a step further by giving this additional assistance to the most vulnerable during these trying times. mazon’s third-quarter profits for 2020 tripled and its revenue soared to an almost unimaginable $96.15 billion. The company predicts that the fourth quarter will be just as – if not more – profitable, and it’s all down to Covid-19. With shops shut and Christmas looming, who wouldn’t buy their gifts with one easy click? I feel queasy about Amazon’s pandemic success, because it’s at the expense of all the shops that have had to close due to the pandemic. Every penny it gains is a penny that could be going into the wallets of our local businesses. This matters, because local businesses are the lifeblood of our community. Every £10 that’s spent in a local shop generates £50 for the local economy, because that shop owner will use local pubs, restaurants and services. Small, local businesses provide the most jobs to communities. They’re more likely to pay a higher average wage than their commercial chain counterparts too. Every £10 that's spent in a local shop generates £50 for the local economy needs of the community. They even look better than chain stores! Our local shops and businesses are on their knees because of Covid-19, and I worry that it’s not just a temporary blip. Given the convenience and price of the likes of Amazon, I fear that many people will turn their backs on the high street for good. We must resist this trend to ensure that our communities thrive. Keynsham has many amazing shops and businesses, and they need our support.

The town council is hosting a virtual Christmas market on Facebook, and I was blown away by all the talented people selling their wares, many who usually rely on physical Christmas markets for their livelihoods. Some of our independent shops have gone online too, and those that sell food are still open. They all need our support in the run-up to Christmas – and beyond. Keeping our pennies in the local economy will help make Keynsham an even better place to live and work. Liz Barling

Kevin Durrant Minister Keynsham Baptist Church

take inspiration from the story ‘ Let’s of Mary and of Greta, and let’s keep

praying and taking action, however weak our efforts may seem

I

am writing this on the day Des O’Connor’s death was announced, and during what would have been the second week of the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, had it not been postponed because of Covid. The two events have connected in my mind because of a famous comment made by Eric Morecambe. Hearing, before a show, that Eric had suffered a heart attack, Des O’Connor asked his audience to offer a prayer for his friend. Eric later thanked Des, saying he felt sure the prayers of those extra six or seven people had made all the difference. Eric’s comic quip does, however, prompt the question about how effective prayers and actions by a small number of people can actually be … which brings me to the climate conference. Five years ago, my wife and I walked from London to Paris to pray for and lobby the delegates at an earlier conference. There were only 30 of us, but on arrival we were joined by thousands of other pilgrims from all over the world. And our prayers bore fruit – a tough agreement was reached between 195 nations to control carbon emissions. Sadly, progress since then has been slow or non-existent. We might have succumbed to despair,

had it not been for a certain Swedish teenager. In August 2018, aged just 15, Greta Thunberg sat with her hand-painted cardboard sign outside the Swedish parliament protesting the lack of urgency in tackling global warming. Within a year, there were more than 1.6 million schoolchildren striking in 185 countries. In response, parliaments and councils have declared a climate emergency, and the issue is back on their agendas. Some readers may be wondering why I’m mentioning Greta in the Christmas edition of the Keynsham Voice. It’s because a key character in the biblical story was another seemingly insignificant teenage girl. Mary’s obedience to God’s call resulted in millions of people’s lives being changed for the better. In the words of her song: rulers would be humbled and the humble raised up, through the ministry of the child she bore. So, let’s take inspiration from the story of Mary and of Greta, and let’s keep praying and taking action, however weak our efforts may seem. God has a lovely habit of using the Davids of this world to defeat the Goliaths.

Kate saddles up to be a world-beater KATE Strong is hoping to create a world cycling record – while staying put. She has been training since the start of this year for her bid to cover the farthest distance on a static bike in 24 hours. Kate, a coach and consultant who lives in Keynsham, will start her attempt on January 7. Due to uncertainty about restrictions on indoor groups, she does not yet know where she will be cycling. The back-up plan is to use her flat, although she would prefer a larger and more public space. “I’d love to welcome supporters to come and watch and hopefully cheer me on,” she said. The record attempt is part of her preparations for the Race Across America, a 3,000-mile road cycling race from the west to the east coast of USA, in 2022. But she is also hoping to raise the profile of women in sport. “I noticed the record stands for men, yet there was no equivalent for a woman. “I still see a discrepancy in how we treat male athletes compared to their female counterparts. Men receive more press coverage, more sponsors and are also supported earlier on their journey towards becoming professional athletes than their female counterparts. “Most professional women athletes have to juggle a parttime job to cover expenses and also expect a shorter career in sport. We need more female role models and women like me who aren’t afraid to attempt some crazy big goals!”

Kate Strong is aiming to cycle at least 680 kilometres in 24 hours Kate started training in January, cycling three to five times a week, for up to 10 hours in one session. And she has certainly set herself an ambitious target. “Currently, Guinness has set the minimum distance to cover in 24 hours at 680 kilometres (approximately 423 miles), so I’m aiming for at least that.” Rules set by Guinness World

Records include having at least two witnesses present for the entire 24 hours. Kate will also need to submit a video of the attempt as evidence before any new record is confirmed. Kate does not expect to take any sleeping breaks during her attempt. “I’ve accounted for up to two hours of stopping time - that’ll include bathroom breaks, any

change of clothing and massages/ physio for my legs and back, and anything else hurting!” Kate will be burning about 250-300 calories an hour, yet she would struggle to eat and digest solid foods on her bike, so she is working with the Plant Based Health Professionals organisation to create a nutrientdense liquid meal plan to keep her energy levels high. She will also focus on pain management. “Cycling for this long will hurt. I think there are less body parts that will be pain-free than in pain!” But her most important focus will be on her mindset. “In the past, I’ve given up once my belief in being able to achieve my goal gave up. So I’m training my brain to be resilient for long periods of time.” Born in Wales, Kate moved to Australia to pursue her dream of owning hospitality businesses. While there, she renovated and opened a guesthouse and restaurant in New South Wales. She also trained to become a triathlete, and in 2014 won her age category in the Weihai ITU Long Distance Triathalon World Championships. Now back in the UK, she says she is motivated by everyone she meets. “Throughout lockdown, I loved hearing about locals who ran a marathon in their back garden, or bought a bike and learnt to cycle at 75. These people are what inspires me.” For more information about Kate’s attempt, go to www. katestrong.co/world-record

Supporters making

Jason Preston is aiming to complete a virtual cycle ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats within six months in aid of Keynsham Mencap

TWO supporters of Keynsham Mencap are going the distance to raise money for the charity. Volunteer and fundraising guru Jason Preston turned 50 in November and to mark the occasion he has set himself his biggest challenge yet. Jason, a keen distance cyclist in his spare time, hopes to complete a virtual ride from Land’s End to John o’ Groats within six months. He will give updates via Keynsham Mencap’s Facebook page. Jason will be raising funds for the Super Saturday Club in Bath and Radstock Juniors, two clubs close to his heart that provide fun activities for children and young people with a learning disability and autism. To support Jason, you can visit his fundraising page at http://easydonate.org/BIKE. Or you can give by text - to donate £5, text BIKE to 70970, and to donate £10, text BIKE to 70191.

Meanwhile, member parent Val Rowles has written 70 poems on the ups and downs of life during lockdown and put them into an A4 book. A limited number of copies of The Covid 70 has gone on sale. And Val is donating all proceeds to Keynsham Mencap, which, despite the closure of clubs, made a commitment to remain operational and stay connected to all its members during the pandemic. She said: “Keynsham Mencap have transformed our daughter Claire’s life through a variety of clubs and activities. “When lockdown began, we were extremely worried about Claire and how it would affect her. But Keynsham Mencap have continued supporting her in so many ways - Zoom meetings, welfare calls, fitness in the park and a range of other ingenious activities. “Their care for all aspects of the young people’s physical and

Record a carol for our service CALLING all singers - can you help record a Keynsham community carol this Christmas? This year, instead of holding its traditional carol service, St Francis Church is planning to host its service on Facebook. The service will include songs by local primary schools, readings by local people and clips of what Christmas means to people who live in Keynsham. The highlight of the service will be the singing of O Little Town of Bethlehem by local people who have recorded themselves at home. “We will combine all the voices to create a local Keynsham choir,” said Rev Anika Gardiner. If anyone would like to record themselves singing the carol, please email stfranciscarol@ gmail.com by December 6 to receive the backing track and further information. The service will be broadcast on December 20.

Recognise any of these faces from our past?

KEYNSHAM Cubs are celebrating 100 years, and when the team were digging through the archives, they discovered this photo of a Cub pack taken around 1949. The Cub mistress has been identified as Hilda Pester (previously Gunton) and we know that the photo was taken outside the Scout HQ in what is now Ashton Way car park. We would love to hear from any readers who might be able to identify any relations in the photo or might even be in the photo themselves. If you’re unsure and would like a larger copy, please contact scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk. While Keynsham’s Scout group was officially formed in 1909, the Cub section started sometime in the 1920s (between 1921 and 1927). To celebrate Keynsham Cub’s milestone birthday, we are trying to find out as much as possible about its long history. If you, or any family members, have any memories, records or other photos (particularly ones that might predate this one) we would love to hear from you. n With no parade, Remembrance Day looked very different this year. Hundreds of people usually line the high street for the annual event, with many of our Scouts playing a central role. This year, only a few people were allowed to lay wreaths, but our Scouts marked the occasion in their own ways. There were plenty of doorstep

remembrances in uniform, and Quantock Cubs made their own poppy wreaths. Meanwhile, Cotswold Cubs shared online the stories, photos and medals of relatives involved in World War II, and learnt about the significance of the poppy. They also listened to the Last Post and held a one-minute silence to mark the event. n Congratulations go to K2 Beaver Colony, as

Osteopaths playing it safe AN OSTEOPATHY clinic in Keynsham is still operating during the lockdown, with measures in place to keep customers and staff safe. Redfern Osteopaths in Bath Road is there to help with aches and pains from working on a laptop at the kitchen table or on the sofa, and injuries from running - the popular new lockdown hobby. The team are following infection control and PPE guidelines set out by their governing bodies. This includes sending a screening questionnaire

to all patients to fill out before each appointment, as well as hand-washing and a temperature check on arrival. All surfaces are wiped down between each patient, and no towels or bedding can be used at this time. Practitioners are working in masks, gloves and aprons, and patients are asked to wear a mask too where they are able. The team can be followed on Facebook @redfernosteopaths, where you can find ideas for stretches and LOW exercises.

Virtual visitors

Role models: Flight Lieutenant Tom Kinsley of the Royal Australian Air Force and scientist Cressida Bullock have zoomed into Castle Primary School

A SCHOOL in Keynsham has been inviting a number of inspirational people to talk to its pupils via Zoom. So far, the children at Castle Primary School have been sung to by West End actor Cameron Jones and watched video footage of Zoe Thompson, a previous contender in Europe's Strongest Woman, lifting a car and pulling a truck. They have also found out all about life in the cockpit of a Hawk 127, thanks to Flight Lieutenant Tom Kinsley of the Royal Australian Air Force, heard all about Harvest from a local vicar, and learned from SARI (Stand Against Racism and Inequality) about the importance of treating everyone of all races with respect. The pupils also watched science experiments live courtesy of scientist Cressida Bullock - without any mess to clean up afterwards! Their next guest was due to be children's author Gill Lewis, who has a class named after her at the school. She was going to be talking about her love of animals and writing. Sarah Marriott, assistant headteacher of the school in Newlands Road, said: “A couple of the children were talking to our headteacher and asked if our school is famous because we have had so many interesting visitors! “We are determined to inspire our children to choose the career that they really want to follow, and by introducing them to these inspirational people, we're hoping this will be the boost they need. Although this time has been strange for everyone, in many ways, the use of virtual assemblies has made the range of experiences the children have been able to access so much wider.”

Mya: Hearing other people speaking different languages in the SARI assembly was exciting! Harrison: I enjoyed the Strong Woman assembly when we watched Zoe pull a truck and lift a car on the video. Lexie: I thoroughly enjoyed when the scientist zoomed in because my friend and I kept predicting what would happen. Roads fixed in lockdown

Lasting tribute to era of peace

TWO oak trees have finally been planted in Saltford to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The coronavirus pandemic meant it was not possible to plant them before the anniversary on May 8, but the trees were finally installed in

time for Remembrance Sunday. The oaks have been planted in the green area in front of Saltford Hall, in a joint project between housing association Curo, Saltford Community Association and Saltford Parish Council. The new trees will take two years to settle in. Although

members of the parish council and community association will keep an eye on them, they would be grateful if any residents can water them during particularly hot or dry spells. As the trees are planted on Curo land, Curo will take charge of their care and maintenance.

POTHOLES in Keynsham have been among the thousands repaired by Bath and North East Somerset Council since the first coronavirus lockdown in March. Its highways team has filled in almost 3,000 potholes and carried out a number of road and drainage improvement schemes in the last seven months. The 35 road resurfacing schemes completed include Charlton Road in Keynsham. Drainage improvements have also taken place on Stockwood Hill. Councillor Joanna Wright, joint cabinet member for transport services, said: “Ahead of lockdown, we secured additional pothole filling materials in case of shortages in supply. “We took advantage of the good weather and the reduction in traffic to refresh road markings in areas such as Keynsham and Bath city centre.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Merry Christmas from Keynsham Library! Join B&NES libraries this December in celebrating a month of 'Christmas & Crime’ – below are some books to look out for. Can you solve our ‘12 Days of Murder: A Festive Fatality’? Daily clues start on December 7. Join in online from November 30 to December 24 for a month of book recommendations, storytelling, fun and festivities! Adult Fiction

The Body in the Library Agatha Christie

reviewed by Debbie Bellinger, Keynsham Library This is a twisted tale of a body muddle and a body double! Body number one … a young woman is found dead in the Bantrys’ library and Miss Jane Marple is called in to unravel the mystery. Arriving before the police, she investigates the scene, noticing the victim’s bitten fingernails and cheap satin evening gown. Neither of the Bantrys know the young woman, so who is she and how did she end up strangled in their house? Body number two … another young woman is found dead, this time in a burnt-out car, attracting the interest of the investigators. How is this connected to the body in the library and how on earth did this woman become involved? Agatha Christie captivates

with her precisely formed plots, delicate clues and delightfully detailed characters. You can see and hear them as clearly as if you were in the room with them.

The Dry Jane Harper

This is one of my top 20 crime novels of recent years. Set in Australia, it begins with a question – who really killed the Hadler family? Tensions in a small town outside Melbourne are high following the deaths. Everyone thinks it was the father Luke Hadler, who committed suicide after killing his wife and young son. The funeral is reluctantly attended by Melbourne policeman Aaron Falk. He is a local boy, best friends with Luke, but left 20 years ago under a dark cloud. As Falk is drawn into investigating the murder, he is forced to confront his past, one which Luke’s death threatens to unearth. Set against this tension is an unbearable drought - you can feel the heat as you read the story. A highly recommended read. Young Adults' Fiction

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Holly Jackson

This is the author’s debut crime thriller for young adults and it is a real gripping read. The main character is 17-year-old Pippa Fitz-Amobi, who has an interesting

LLLL BBBBBBBB SSSSS WWWW N e e d m o r e s to r ag e s p a ce ?

idea for her final student project. Five years ago, Andie Bell was murdered. Sal Singh was arrested for the crime and everyone in the town ‘knew’ he did it. But Pippa was not so sure the police arrested the right person. So she chooses this case for her project and begins to uncover secrets, long hidden in the town. And if the real killer is out there, how much danger is Pip in? This is a well-written story, with elements of social media and transcripts from police interviews. Look out for book two: Good Girl, Bad Blood. Children's Fiction

The Night I Met Father Christmas Ben Miller

reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library Assistant From the actorcomedian Ben Miller comes this super Christmas tale originally written for one of his children. Jackson is determined to meet Father Christmas and, after pretending to be asleep, goes downstairs to lay in wait. Catching Father Christmas in

the act, he inadvertently makes him hurt his ankle. The only way this famous distributor of toys will finish in time is with Jackson’s help. A funny story with lovely oldfashioned illustrations, it’s like a child-friendly version of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. Each chapter, although short, leaves you wanting to read a little more, and all too soon, you get to the last few pages and don’t want it to end.

Murder Most Fowl Jed Lynch

With a hint towards the festive season, we meet Seamus. He is no ordinary private detective – well, to start with, he is a turkey! But if you need a mystery solved, write a postcard to Seamus with all the details. He has already solved the case of the Rampaging Rhinoceros, although it did not go well. Now he meets Ms Ermine, a cat, with loads of money and a problem at the Blue Chameleon, the club she works at. This proves a tricky case that involves sinister snakes and an unusual meerkat called Elvis. A great children’s read.

K

eynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust had its second highly successful Zoom talk on November 2, with nearly 50 screens logging in, writes chairman Dave Sage. The speaker was Yorkshireborn Julian Sykes, an experienced bird and wildlife enthusiast and photographer. He started operating in Spain as a professional wildlife guide several years ago and has since gained an excellent reputation for 'value for money' holidays and short breaks, always conducted with a high level of professionalism and good humour (for more information, search online for Julian-SykesWildlife-Holidays. The theme of his talk was Lynx and Lammergeier, a wild cat and a vulture, with one thing in common: both were extinct or near extinction in southern Spain as recently as 20 years ago. Both are now present in more healthy numbers and bear witness to the remarkable powers of recovery of wild species if given the opportunity to do so. At the start of the millennium, the lynx was down to 120 individuals in the Sierra de Andujar Natural Park - the rarest cat in the world. The park is an area of granite, with true Mediterranean forest: holm oak, cork oak and black pine among the dominant tree species. The region is famous for rearing fighting bulls, and fortunately most farmers are sympathetic

Bird and wildlife enthusiast Julian Sykes (inset top right) with Iberian lynx that featured in his Zoom talk to the plight of the lynx. There were three key factors that led to its catastrophic decline: habitat loss, for roads and houses; a crash in the rabbit population due to myxomatosis and haemorrhagic disease (rabbits are the lynx’ main prey); and roadkill. Since then a group of Spanish conservationists called Life Lince (lince being Spanish for lynx) initiated a captive breeding programme, based at Seville Zoo. Rabbit populations were re-established, red-legged partridge and deer were introduced, and road signs and

networks of tunnels were built to reduce the amount of roadkill. Once captive-bred lynx were released (some with radio collars), carcasses were put out until the animals were able to hunt successfully for themselves. These animals soon began interbreeding with the resident population and, in the latest census in 2018, lynx numbers have swollen to more than 600 individuals, a remarkable increase for an apex predator. Julian then explained about the re-introduction of Lammergeier, the bearded vulture, to the Sierra de Cazorla region of SW Spain.

DAB radio venture

THREE community radio stations have teamed up to apply for the Keynsham, East Bristol and Mangotsfield small-scale DAB licence. Ujima, BCfm and BSR, which have broadcast in the area on FM for decades, have been looking after the Small Scale Trial DAB in Bristol in recent years which was originally owned by Celador. The group is promising new community, local and specialist music stations coming from and focused on the Bristol area.

This region is limestone, consisting of 80% pine forest, and of high altitude, with cold snowy winters. It is the largest governmentprotected area in Spain. Unfairly persecuted by poisoning and shooting, Lammergeier became extinct in this region, last breeding in the 1970s. Like all vultures, Lammergeier are not predators but scavengers and carrion feeders, so pose no threat at all to domestic livestock. A captive breeding programme was set up in 2012, using eggs from successful populations in

Ujima, BCfm and BSR will each provide their existing services to the lineup, along with Somer Valley Radio from North East Somerset as one of the existing trial services, and the new community radio station for Keynsham, KTCR. In total, Bristolians will get more than 15 radio stations on the mix if the application is successful. Bristol Digital Radio’s application for the licence is supported by Bristol’s mayor, Marvin Rees.

Wild boar and piglets - sometimes called humbugs due to the striped nature of their coat. Below, the rare nocturnal cat-like genet the Pyrenees and Cantabrian mountains. Bred in pens for a year, with minimal human contact, 26 individuals were released in 2013, and they have since successfully bred (3m above the ledge where they last successfully bred in the 1970s). The current count is at least 18 individuals, so they are still critically endangered, and even now some poisoning is taking place. However, the region is heavily policed, so the future looks brighter for these iconic birds. With a 6-8ft wingspan, a characteristic spoon-shaped tail, and an ability to soar for long periods using thermal air currents, they are truly magnificent to observe. They share the region with a wealth of other wildlife, essential as a reliable food source. There are Spanish ibex, red fox, wild cats, otters, red and fallow Our next Zoom talk, on Friday December 11, is Orchid Conservation Adventures in Sarawak with Simon PughJones from the Mendip Studio School in Radstock. Simon has been working with students locally and in Borneo on orchid conservation projects for many years. Students from the Radstock school visit Borneo as part of trips funded by the British Council. They have developed expertise in orchid propagation and are acting as consultants by setting

deer, wild boar, red squirrels, as well as the rare nocturnal cat-like genet and the sheep-like mouflon, both introduced from North Africa in Roman times. Other birds worthy of note are griffon and black vultures, Spanish imperial eagles (very rare), golden up Sarawak’s first orchid propagation laboratory, and training local children at the MRSM School, Kuching. We will hear about this work from both Simon and some of his current students as well as other adventures from their trips. and booted eagles, red and black kites, and several species of owl. The area is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, and Julian’s expertise and passion for these beautiful parts of Spain was inspiring, for which we gave him suitable praise and thanks.

l After his talk, announcing another fantastic donation to our swift nest box project, this time from the Waitrose token scheme, we discussed the erection of the boxes around Keynsham next spring, ready for their return from Africa in April and May. We were fortunate that David Robertson attended our talk. David is chair of the Bath Swift Group and has overseen the installation of more than 100 swift nest boxes in Bath. He is a very helpful contact, with some useful tips. We finished with some local sightings in the area, most notably a black redstart in Park Road - very unusual - a flock of more than 1,000 starlings over Burnett, and a kestrel being chased by six starlings near Broadlands School. Thanks once again to Kathy Farrell for organising ticket sales and for hosting the meeting.

Amazing ammonites should be treasured

AS a geologist, the photograph of a huge (polystyrene) ammonite on Page 33 of November’s Keynsham Voice caught my eye. I am fairly sure most residents will have seen small real ammonite fossils built into local walls, and many will know the legend why the town got its name (when St Keyna turned all the snakes to stone). But how many realise these are the same kind of ammonites found on the fossil graveyard at Lyme Regis where the photo was taken? The age of the rocks is the same but the sea here was less muddy, and we know this from the work of William Smith, who was able to use the sequential evolution of ammonites to date strata. What many may also not know is that quite a few really big ammonites also turn up locally not quite as big as the polystyrene one but very real, such as the one I am pictured next to, which I was fortunate enough to rescue from being crushed when Keelings Quarry was built on. In almost 50 years, I have come across quite a few ammonites locally and I have incorporated several in the walls I have built in and around Burnett. Many years ago I tried to get B&NES Council and Keynsham Town Council to acknowledge the importance of ammonites and their

links to Keynsham. So when the new civic centre was started, I knew that many of these amazing creatures would be excavated in its construction, because incidentally there was a small version of this ammonite pavement on the grassy bank it destroyed. I begged that any that were found be incorporated into the walls of the new building.

In the end, all I could get was an undertaking that what was found would be saved and used in the landscaping of the new development. I photographed several perfect specimens during excavation so I was looking forward to seeing them and that at last the town would honour its geological heritage, with a better display than the rather feeble decaying lump of rock that is currently fenced off in Keynsham Park. Sadly my wish has not happened and I began to see many fine fossils appearing in reclamation yards at about the same time as the building work. Perhaps all is not lost because when I challenged the town council a couple of years back, they were not certain but did think some were in storage and let on that they had a rather nice specimen in their office. If you feel heritage is important as I do, please write to the council and ask why there is no public display of these amazing creatures so that Keynsham can be reunited with the legend. Who knows? I might be persuaded to exhibit my fossil fish, dinosaurs, reptiles and ammonites found locally and even bequest them in my will – always assuming that I can truly believe they will be treasured. We don't want Bath's waste Charity needs your help

The recycling centre at Pixash Lane in Keynsham I AGREE with recent comments that the additional A4 traffic created by lorries in the vicinity of the current B&NES recycling centre will be unacceptable, especially with the new housing developments in the area (Proposals to move Bath recycling facilities to Keynsham, page 5, November edition). I believe that waste should be managed and processed where it is generated, so it remains visible to those who generate the waste, in their own back yard. So what is the real motivation behind making this move? Maybe it’s the profit from the sale of the land for development, and to remove the nuisance site from Bath

and the adjacent newly completed exclusive Riverside apartments and luxurious homes. The developers must be very thankful to Bath & North East Somerset Council for finally getting rid of this carbuncle on the Riverside. I await the environmental impact report and impact assessment with interest. Meanwhile, Keynsham no doubt will then pick up all the Bath waste and rubbish and the associated issues of noise, traffic, pollution and on-street parking of employees for the next 40 years. Come on councillors, stand up for our town. Find a more suitable site in Bath. John Kiely

The UK’s leading heart charity, the British Heart Foundation (BHF,) needs the support of the local community now more than ever. Following the Government’s announcement of a second lockdown, we were forced to close our shops in the South West until Thursday December 3. We expect the current shop closures across England to cost us millions of pounds. This adds to the already devastating impact of the coronavirus on the charity's income. Our funding for new research is expected to be halved by £50 million next year, which could limit future funding and delay important scientific breakthroughs that could help save lives. Our charity shops run purely on the support of the public, which is why we are urging the local community to support us, either by shopping online or donating smaller items via post. Our eBay store remains open for those looking for quality, unique preloved items, and our online shop is the ideal place to find Christmas cards, accessories and festive gifts. You can also support the BHF by donating smaller, quality items to us by post – as part of essential shopping trips – such as branded clothing, jewellery, vinyl records and cameras. Each year, heart and circulatory diseases kill around 14,700 people in the South West, and currently 720,000 people in the region are living with them. The support of the local community – whether it’s donating unwanted quality items or buying a festive gift for a loved one – will help us continue to fund research that saves and improves lives in the South West. Star of Bethlehem

The guns are silent now. In no-man’s-land the mud is churned and frozen, in eerie silence – frosted, glittering mounds, hard green ponds of slime, Where men have fought and died this afternoon.

There’s a light There’s a light Shining in the sky It’s the star of Bethlehem A guiding light to show the way For the travelling three wise men

The guns are silent now. In trenches, deep and cheerless, cold gaping slits in Flanders’, sodden soil, The soldiers wait, alert and fearful; listening for the sounds they know so well: The click of the bolt, the clink of steel, the scurrying feet and furtive shadows in the dark, And then the blinding flash, the searing pain that heralds sweet oblivion.

There’s a light There’s a light Shining in the sky A host of angels sing glory be Proclaiming Jesus in a stable born Calling shepherds to come and see

The men are silent now. They wait in poignant expectation, For this could be a truly special night when fighting stops in honour of a baby boy. For this is Christmas Day. The moon shines bright: the frost bites hard, the air is crisp and clear.

There’s a light There’s a light Shining in the sky We must be strong in this world we live All the turmoil now we see and hear With its conflict, it’s hard to forgive

The world seems silent now. Yet, faintly like a newborn soul released, exploring the intervening waste, A note of joy is clearly heard. A note, a voice, alone and querulous in the void, And in that voice comes life, and that life is the light of men both foe and friend.

There’s a light There’s a light Shining in the sky Showing Christ was born to save So take this hand that’s offered you From your birth, until the grave

The silent world is shattered now. The bond of fear is broken As one more voice and yet another join to swell the joyful chorus of the night. O silent night! O holy night! All is calm as fear and anger slink away, and erstwhile enemies rise fearless from their fitful beds. They join together there in no-man’s-land to share the common joy that overcomes the gross futility of war.

There’s a light There’s a light Shining in the sky Just let yourself therefore believe Then you will know it’s really true From the comfort you will receive

Empty tables, empty chairs Party poppers, lots of spares, Christmas hats and table places All replaced with empty spaces. But spare a thought for those more needing Those who may not feel like feeding, Those whose lives may well be ending Those whose lives they are defending.

My mask I’ve worn, my hands are clean The cleanest they have ever been! Yet now with festive bells approaching This virus carries on encroaching.

My Christmas meal can surely wait There’s other food to grace my plate. So when the festive time arrives I’ll pray for those who need their lives.

Is there to be no end in sight Will Christmas colours not be white? No mixing with the ones we miss, No mistletoe, no cheeky kiss?

I’ll send my thoughts, my prayers and wishes Instead of washing endless dishes. The time has come – we MUST unite We won’t go down without a fight.

Am I to eat my meal alone? Or will my family send a drone So courses we can share online While thinking all the world is fine.

Musicians bring cheer to residents SHELTERED housing residents in Keynsham have been treated to an al fresco violin concert. Musicians Lucy Hewson and Rebecca Prosser, from Bath, provided the ‘Concert On Your Doorstep’ treat for people living at Hawthorn Court. The performance was organised by housing association Curo. Terri Underhill, Curo’s sheltered housing officer, said: “The music was marvellous and the talent incredible, and I was touched that one lady in her 90s wrote to me to say how much she had enjoyed it. “The tunes were uplifting, with residents tapping and humming along, and we had a chuckle when they played The Sun Has Got His Hat On as the wind blew and it began to spit with rain! “If we can book them in,

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Appeal success thanks to team effort

T

he past month has certainly been a busy one, despite lockdown 2.0 forcing Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club back out of the water again. Firstly, the club launched their Covid-19 appeal to help meet the financial challenge of increasing running costs and the loss of income from not being able to hold swimming galas. The Crowdfunder project had an initial target of £12,000, half of which was a £6,000 match-fund from Sport England. It was a real team effort, with everyone getting involved. Evie W and Daisy O baked cakes, Sophie S and Alfie U held a sponsored car wash, parents and friends pledged their money and they shared the campaign far and wide. At the time of writing, Keynsham Swimming Club are delighted to have raised a total £12,647! This was achieved in just two weeks of launching the project, which is due to close at 2pm on December 3. A stretch target of £20,000 has now been added. If you would like to donate, enter one of the draws or buy one of the rewards

Sophie S and Alfie U splashing for cash with their sponsored car wash in aid of the KASC Covid-19 appeal on offer. You can do so by visiting www.crowdfunder.co.uk/keynshamamateur-swimming-clubs-covid-19appeal

Support from business The club are delighted to announce that Travis Perkins have generously sponsored the county squad, as well as one of the new blocks at Keynsham Leisure Centre. The junior squad are now sponsored by I. J. McGill Transport. Adam Pope, of I. J. McGill Transport, said: “We are a Keynsham-based transport company and are proud to sponsor a local club like this that do so much for so many children of all ages.” Kay Rex, the county squad head coach, has been sponsored by K9 Guss Dog Training (www.k9guss. co.uk) who provide classes or 1-2-1 for puppies and dogs of all ages. Spokesman Andy Gussey said: “K9 Guss Dog Training are proud to be sponsoring the amazing Kay Rex

and very happy to be supporting Keynsham Swimming Club, which has played such an important role in the lives of the Gussey family.” Knightsbridge Personal & Corporate Solutions LLP, based in Chippenham, are the new sponsors of regional coach Zach Derrick. Four of the remaining five blocks have been sponsored by Western Power Steering, CASA Environmental Services (who are supporting Keynsham for a second year), LTC Financial Solutions, and Robbin Group. The final block is sponsored by Bristol Balloons and Bath Balloons, in the memory of KASC swimmer Esme Berry, who was sadly taken away too early this summer. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please email tanya.oliver@keynshamswimming. club.

Lockdown 2.0 The new guidance introduced on November 5 saw leisure venues

across England closed again, which meant Keynsham were not able to swim. However, an extensive Zoom schedule has been keeping the kids busy, with everything from baking challenges and quizzes for all ages, to colouring competitions for the younger swimmers, and goal-setting and mindset talks for the most competitive athletes in the club. For the older swimmers there have been twice-weekly, live landtraining Zoom sessions with Mike Uren.

Come and join us! In the New Year, the club will be running trials for swimmers aged 6-8 years (school years 1, 2 and 3). But swimmers from all ages are welcome to apply for a trial, too. If you think your swimmer has what it takes, contact thea. beament@keynshamswimming.club to register your interest, or enquire via the club’s Facebook page.

n SALTFORD LAWN TENNIS CLUB Salute to tournament winners WE have all been missing our tennis over the last few weeks, so Saltford Lawn Tennis Club are delighted the LTA has advised that outdoor tennis can resume on December 2. We just managed to complete our annual in-house tournament before lockdown 2.0 and were delighted that many of our new members made it through to the finals. Organisers provided a running match analysis on our WhatsApp group, as we were unable to

have spectators due to Covid-19 restrictions. Congratulations to Simon Perkins (men’s singles champion) and Andy May (runner-up); Rachael Tonkin (ladies’ singles champion) and Amanda Hawkins (runner-up); Lucas Richards and Ryan Bullock (men’s doubles champions) and Simon Perkins and Alex Beckett (runners-up); Judith Townsend and Jessica Fell (ladies’ doubles champions) and Sally Hunter and Alison Birkett (runners-up); and Laura Sinclair and Dave Perryman

n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Signings boost squad ready for restart ALTHOUGH Keynsham Town’s season was put on hold early in November due to the latest lockdown, there has been no rest for the club’s committee or management team. On the field, manager John Allen has been able to boost the first-team squad with the addition of two more quality players. Firstly, centre-forward Callum Baker joined the Ks from Bishop Sutton, and he was quickly followed through the Crown Fields turnstile by centre-half Jamie Gregory from Westbury United. John said: “Callum will add both strength and energy to our forward line, and is no stranger to the league and level, having previously played for Bitton. We are looking forward to seeing him link up with our current attackers and becoming an integral part of our side. “Jamie was on the books of Bristol City and West Brom as a youngster, and has been playing in our division this season with Westbury. He is young and hungry, and will undoubtedly strengthen our back line.” Off the field, 2020 was always going to be hard for funding a football club, so the Ks committee looked in the summer to expand their sponsorship with affordable packages for squeezed financial budgets. Knowing that business and the trades would be finding money tight after the first lockdown, the club expanded their strategy to target lots of small contributions from companies. In return, the club

Jordan Metters in action for the Ks against Street before the latest lockdown struck

could help by promoting those companies on social media , the club website and at home games. With football now called off again, the club’s marketing team are once again talking to their sponsors to see how they can help them, such as promoting them on social media in the crucial run-up to Christmas. At the same time, Keynsham Town have been helping local charities in their hour of need. Donations have been made to Children’s Hospice South West, the Jessie May Foundation and Charlton House Care Home. As recently as November, the club helped an organisation in Keynsham that helps children who have to use walking frames

to play football to continue to do so as funds became short. The club would like to thank all of their sponsors, without whom they would certainly have struggled financially. The Ks are due to be back in action on Saturday December 5, subject to no other Covid-19 restrictions. The club will continue to do everything they can to make the AJN Stadium a safe environment for spectators. Home attendances have been higher so far this season, as people who remain unable to watch live professional football realise what an excellent valuefor-money alternative nonleague football represents. The forthcoming home games for the Ks at Crown Fields, including the lunchtime local derby on Boxing Day against

Brislington, are as follows: l Saturday Dec 5: First XI v Exmouth Town, 3pm l Saturday Dec 19: First XI v Hallen, 3pm l Saturday Dec 26 (Boxing Day): First XI v Brislington, 12.30pm l Monday Dec 28: Reserves v Nailsea United, 3pm l Saturday Jan 2: Reserves v Watchet Town, 3pm l Tuesday Jan 5: First XI v Westbury United, 7.45pm l Saturday Jan 9: First XI v Roman Glass St George, 3pm You can keep up to date with all the Ks news via their website at keynshamtownfc.co.uk, their Facebook page Keynsham Town Football Club and Twitter on @KeynshamTownFC. News of the Ks’ fortunes following the restart will be in the next issue of the Voice.
