THE temporary part-time pedestrianisation of Keynsham High Street is being considered, following suggestions that it should be closed to traffic for specific hours during the day as part of social-distancing measures. Members of Bath & North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council met on Tuesday June 23 to discuss the proposals and issue a response to B&NES. B&NES has been working on measures to help people use pavements safely while following social-distancing rules. Keynsham has been prioritised as a location on the grounds that it will have busier pavements as more shops and cafes open, and that people will frequently have to step into the High Street to pass each other or to pass queues outside of shops. Originally, B&NES had stated it would only be consulting with ward councillors owing to time constraints. But the clerk of Keynsham Town Council has been notified that any decision on how to implement safe social distancing in Keynsham High Street will be deferred until after the town council has discussed the matter. As a B&NES councillor who does not represent Keynsham Town Council, Councillor Vic Clarke for Keynsham North ward could not join the debate during the meeting or vote on the proposed closure, but he was permitted to speak against the temporary closure of the High Street before the debate started.

He said: “I understand that space for social distancing can be provided without closing the High Street by temporarily widening some of the pavements.” He said barrier could be placed along the parking bays on the east side of the road to provide a wider pavement, with the two disabled bays being retained. Also, barriers could be placed along the west side of the road between the Tui travel agent and Peacocks, together with ramps, to provide a wider pavement. The planters could be temporarily relocated. “I also think that such an indefinite temporary closure should only have been considered after all of the Keynsham retailers, not just those in the High Street, and residents had been formally consulted and a report published by an independent body. I also have concerns with regard to traffic congestion and car parking, particularly in Back Lane.” During the meeting, Ivy Jean from Wild About Flowers in Keynsham, spoke on behalf of the local Independent Traders Groups. Speaking to the Voice, she said: "It’s been the most challenging period for us all, and as traders it is understandably a huge worry to be faced with further changes that could be disruptive to the High Street without the right considerations. “There are many concerns around increased traffic

ban proposal to aid social distancing congestion and air pollution, intermittent vehicle access, safety for pedestrians, removal of parking spaces and disabled access, removal of cycle access and travel, no access for dial-aride and buses, that we’ve raised and hope will be considered. “We do hope if there is a temporary pedestrianisation, it will help to increase safety and, in turn, encourage more people to visit Keynsham. “We cannot afford for this experiment to not work. We would encourage everyone in Keynsham to support local and spend with small businesses at a time they really do need them.” B&NES ward councillor for Keynsham South, Lisa O’Brien, also told the Voice that she was against the pedestrianisation of the one-way part of the High Street for several reasons. She said: “I support the views of the traders’ group, representing many businesses in the centre of Keynsham. They need the constant visual stimulus allowed to bus and vehicle passengers to their window displays and shop fronts to attract customers, to remind them that they are there and can offer local convenience. “I would also question how those businesses with no rear access would receive their deliveries which arrive throughout the day. Would these have to squeeze into the small window of one hour between 9am and 10am, just when traffic is at its busiest? “I did suggest a shortterm alternative which would

Measures are being considered to help shoppers maintain social distancing in Keynsham High Street as more stores open keep traffic flowing and could of the motion proposed by significantly increase the space councillor McFee. for pedestrians to social distance “A number of town - closing off the car parking councillors spoke, warming spaces, except the two blue badge to the idea of a short bays - and blocking the cycle pedestrianisation trial to ‘give contraflow. it a go’. The debate, in my view, “It would demonstrably be became more about a trial to temporary and avoid confusion see if pedestrianisation would for pedestrians and motorists work rather than concerns about alike. However, this was rejected crowds of people flocking to as not looking attractive enough the High Street and unable to and perhaps, more significantly, adequately social distance.” not allowing the trial - long Tony Crouch was the only advocated by councillors Wait Keynsham town councillor who and McFee - for complete voted against the proposal. pedestrianisation ‘allowing He told the Voice: “It had businesses to display their goods not been thought through and outside their premises’ - part consulted about. It was a result

of a party-political vanity project and opportunistic on Covid-19 money to assist in social distancing. “There was also the temporary nature of the measure, suggested to be two weeks, which we now know will not be the case. I am unhappy that disabled parking will not be available, although the suggestion is that dial-a-ride will have access. “There has been no discussion with the bus companies, who it will affect greatly, with the suggestion that the number 17 would use West View Road and Rock Road to ensure they were facing the right way in Ashton Way to return to Southmead. Buses would now be using Ashton Way in a southerly direction rather than a northerly one, where the brand-new bus shelter has been built. “I do not trust B&NES with a temporary solution. We had that when the High Street was made one-way temporarily, which was made permanent very quickly without proper consultation. “Finally, I would support the opinion of traders who have had a very rough ride recently and believe such a move will kill the High Street. “As a temporary measure it would be far better to close the cycle lane and move the planters on the west side of the road, and on the east side barrier off the parking except the disabled bays.” Further updates on the proposals will be included in a future edition of the Voice.

Farmers market returns

AFTER a three-month break due to the coronavirus, the popular monthly farmers market will be returning to Keynsham on Saturday July 11. During the lockdown, most local farmers and producers worked hard to find other ways to get their food to loyal Keynsham customers via delivery schemes or click and collect from their farms - but nothing beats the pleasure of being able to sell directly at the market. SFM have been working closely with the B&NES senior environmental health officer to ensure that the newly designed market will be safe for both customers and stall holders. This will involve creating an entrance and exit for the market, with hand sanitisers available, and a suggested one-way system. The stalls will be spread out to ensure safe social distancing, and during busy periods the numbers entering the market will be carefully managed. The stall holders themselves will be introducing some changes to how they operate. Many will now offer contactless payment, and baked goods will be either covered or behind Perspex sneeze guards – and, sadly, tasters will not be available for the near future. It will, however, be a bumper market with

Zoonosis - diseases we share with pets

T

he Covid-19 Pandemic has been stressful for all of us, and many people may be worried about their pets. Although a few cats and two dogs out of thousands who have been tested have come up positive for the virus, this is thought to be due to humans causing the infection in animals. There is no evidence that animals spread the virus to humans. The only concern with our pets is that they can act as a fomite, or an object that can spread the disease between humans through physical contact (much like a telephone, doorknob, table surface, etc). So, washing your hands before and after handling your pet is the best practice, and those infected with Covid-19 should limit pet contact. What about other diseases? Although many infectious agents are species specific, there are some parasites like hookworms and roundworms which can cause infections and even blindness in children, and some bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter and others that can be shared between humans and their pets. Cats can cause a disease in humans called Cat Scratch Fever, which is spread between cats through fleas and transmitted to humans through bites or scratches. In addition, ticks can cause Lyme Disease and other illnesses in both humans and pets. Leptospirosis is bacteria carried in the urine of rats and rodents which can be shed in dog urine and infect humans as well. So what can you do to protect yourself and your family? Washing hands after handling pets and their faeces, urine and other bodily fluids is important to reduce any potential transmission. Teaching children this early and often is key. Avoiding letting your pet lick your face is also recommended. Keeping your pet on monthly flea and tick prevention, and regular worming, and up to date on vaccines can protect both your two and four-legged family members. Call your veterinarian if you have any concerns or would like more information. Stay safe and enjoy the love of your pet during these challenging times. Kristine Clark DVM, MRCVS

So grateful: Clare Hill and her husband Steve outside the Royal United Hospital

Without you, I wouldn't be here HUNDREDS of pounds worth of kitchen goods and toiletries have been donated to a hospital ward to say thank-you for saving the life of a colleague. A total of £5,629 is being donated to the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust after its healthcare professionals looked after a colleague from the Co-operative Food branch in Keynsham. Half of the money was raised through donations from customers at 13 Bristol stores that are part of the regional co-operative, Southern Co-op, and a further £2,500 was donated from Southern Co-op’s wider community fund, Love Your Neighbourhood. The money will go towards buying six iPads for patients diagnosed with Covid-19 to help them stay in touch with their friends and family. As the ward is in a previously unused building, the colleague break-out area needed a few essentials, so the money has also gone towards a kettle, toaster, microwave,

sandwich maker, coffee machine and lots more. Clare Hill, who lives in Keynsham with her husband Steve and works as a customer service assistant at the Co-op’s Keynsham branch, is currently recovering at home after contracting Covid-19 at the end of March. Eager to get back to work, she has also been lending a hand with the fund-raising, as she and her mother have been making pamper bags so colleagues on the ward can carry their toiletries safely. Jess Hockridge, store manager at Co-operative Food in Queens Road, said: “We can’t thank the healthcare professionals at RUH enough for taking care of Clare. “But we also want to say a massive thanks to all of our customers and Clare’s husband who helped raise this amazing amount.” Jess added: “One of our duty managers, Laura, raised a massive £395 by holding a live auction of all of her beauty products on social media as she is also a consultant

for Body Shop. Plus, Clare’s partner Steve added £600 to our final figure from his fundraising, which will go towards a TV for the ward.” Clare said: “I want to thank everyone who’s donated to the fund, all of our wonderful customers, all of the beautiful and brave people who helped me in ICU and on the Charlotte Ward afterwards. Without their dedication, love and care, I wouldn’t be here today.” Margi Jenkins, RUH Critical Care Matron, said: “It’s a huge moment for all our staff every time one of our Covid-19 patients gets better and is able to leave intensive care. “We’re so glad that Clare is recovering well and we’re incredibly grateful to Southern Co-op and their customers for this really generous donation.” For more information on how Southern Co-op has responded to the Covid-19 pandemic, visit www.thesoutherncooperative.co.uk/covid-19-updates.

Dad back home after 7-week coronavirus ordeal A KEYNSHAM man is convalescing back home with his family after spending seven weeks in hospital with Covid-19. Gary Lloyd, aged 47, lives with his wife Zoe, daughter Felicity, 18, and son Nathan, 20. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and used to play rugby at Keynsham RFC, and has no underlying health conditions. After falling ill at home on Friday March 27, he was taken to the intensive care unit at the Royal United Hospital in Bath by paramedics on Friday April 3 and was soon put into an induced coma. A week after he was admitted, the RUH contacted the Royal Brompton Hospital in

London (a specialist heart and lung hospital) as Gary was in a critical condition and needed treatment on an ECMO machine, which is designed to provide cardio and respiratory support. Seven days later, on his arrival back at the RUH, Gary was admitted to the new Pierce Ward for critically ill Covid-19 patients, where he still remained in a coma and was treated for blood clots, a secondary infection and kidney failure. He remained in a coma for another three and a half weeks and underwent a tracheotomy to help him breathe. A week before he came home on Thursday May 21,

Gary was brought out of the coma gradually, and continues to make daily progress. His mum Peggy Lloyd told the Voice: “The doctors and nurses went above and beyond with the 24-hour care they provided for Gary in such challenging times and still managed to provide daily updates to his family. “All of Gary's family would like to extend special thanks for the care he received from everyone at the Royal United Hospital, including the Royal Brompton Hospital. “We’d also like to say many thanks to all of Gary’s friends, neighbours and family for their support and those including Gary in their prayers.”

Still providing companionship and support

HESE are unprecedented times, but at Home Instead Senior Care Bristol East they are continuing to provide daily companionship and home care support to their clients across Hanham, Keynsham, Chew Valley, Kingswood, Longwell Green and surrounding areas. Their mission is to enable older people to live comfortably in their own home for as long as possible through their team of dedicated CAREGivers, who are matched specifically to their client to ensure they build long and trusting relationships. The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered in short, rushed visits, so care calls are always a minimum of one hour in duration. The COVID-19 pandemic is especially challenging for those with elderly loved ones. In these difficult times, Home Instead’s professionally trained CAREGivers have continued to go above and beyond to keep their clients happy, healthy, and safe within their own homes.

The team recently supported a new client who was in self isolation and shielding. He was struggling to get around his home, so they set to and arranged for him to receive a wheelchair so he could move more easily. His CAREGivers are thrilled to have seen a huge improvement in his emotional state and in his confidence, smiles all around. Joe Spitzer, owner of Home Instead Bristol East, said: “Never has the need for home care been so much in the spotlight. I am so proud of our incredible team who are safely supporting our clients – whether it’s collecting shopping and prescriptions, impromptu haircuts, helping with personal care or simply having a chat”. “With families and friends unable to visit, the reassurance of knowing that their CAREGiver will be there for them makes such a difference to our clients. We are committed to making a difference and regard it as a special privilege to look after older people with love, care and compassion.” The team at Home Instead can provide services such as

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society Although many of the celebrations planned for the 75th anniversary of VE Day were cancelled during May, this picture is a reminder of the street parties held on VE Day itself in 1945. It shows a group of children on St Anne’s Avenue in Keynsham. Photo courtesy of Bob Woodberry n In April's edition we showed a picture of an event at Keynsham Cricket Ground in April 1930. We have since discovered that the occasion was the official opening of the new ground by the widow of Frank Taylor, who died in 1927. The event was reported in the Western Daily Press a few days later.

Barbara is piping up for Queen A SALTFORD resident staged her own mini ‘Trooping the Colour’ to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday. As well as making a ‘scarecrow’ of the Queen, Barbara Black dusted off her bagpipes to play in honour of Her Majesty. Her efforts were part of Saltford Community Association’s street party to celebrate the Queen’s big day on Saturday June 13. Barbara enjoys a number of activities, especially with the U3A (University of the Third Age) in Bath. She learned to play the bagpipes after joining the Avon Glen Pipes and Drums, based in Whitchurch, in 1999. “Sadly, that group has now folded, but I still like to get my pipes out for special occasions,” said Barbara, who has lived in Saltford for 25 years.

Choirs singing from their sofas! CHOIR members in Keynsham and beyond have gone online so they can continue singing with others. Every Wednesday, the new GoodAfternoonChoir/ online tunes up with weekly one-hour internet rehearsals, taken alternatively by the choir founder, Bath’s Mr Music, Grenville Jones, Bristol-based Ben England and Matt Finch, who lives in Bath. Grenville, Ben and Matt lead many of the weekly choirs across the region – including the Good Afternoon Choir in Keynsham - that had to stop in March due to the coronavirus. Members come from all walks of life, many with little or no previous singing experience. However, as Grenville points out, there are no auditions to be a Good Afternoon member as the accent is on fun and making new friends. The choirs have a strong fund-raising ethos and last year alone they raised more than

£22,000, which was divided between local charities, with recipients chosen by each individual group. The GoodAfternoonChoir/ online will sing the songs that choir members know from their weekly repertoire as well as new pieces specially arranged for them to sing from their sofas. Others who access the internet can also join. Rehearsals will be posted on YouTube each week and singers will be able to interact with the choir, choosing pieces they would like to sing and passing messages to the members of their individual choirs that they are missing. Grenville said: “Since we had to stop rehearsals, we have had so many emails from members, many who live alone, to tell us how much they miss their singing friends. Our new choir is for them.” For more information about the rehearsals, please visit www.goodafternoonchoir.org

Massive rise in demand for food bank

KEYNSHAM Food Bank is dealing with unprecedented demand for its services. It fed 1,283 people during the last fiscal year, of whom 612 were children. So far this fiscal year (as of June 20) the food bank has fed 1,049 people, of whom 540 are children. This means the number of people helped in just two and a half months is just 134 below the figure for the entire last fiscal year. Food banks in the South West dealt with an average increase in April this year of 124 per cent over the previous April. But the figure for Keynsham Food Bank was a staggering 551 per cent – the largest increase in the South West. Keynsham Food Bank Co-ordinator Alan Hale said: “It is hard to comprehend that we in Keynsham are standing out for the wrong reasons. “The fact is that significant numbers of local people are clearly struggling due to a number of factors. The main one is low income, and if you are on a low income and are then furloughed, that leads to lower wages or delays in wages. And if your job is lost, then that is even worse. “My team of volunteers have been amazing in the way and the spirit in which they work. In the face of the 551 per cent increase, the volunteers turn up and do what is necessary for the good of those suffering a food crisis. “As the co-ordinator, I am very proud of what we do and how we do it. None of this would be possible were it not for the kindness of the local community

who donate food through the supermarket drop boxes every week and for the commitment of the volunteers who are never found wanting.” Since the coronavirus crisis began, the food bank distribution centres have closed to people walking in. Instead they are working with virtual vouchers sent via the web to the food bank from the professionals who issue the vouchers, and then volunteers prepare the food parcels which Keynsham and District Dial a Ride deliver to the doorstep of the recipient. The food bank, after a number of months of searching for a new warehouse facility, has finally found what it needs in Marksbury. And it hopes to move its ‘warehouse’ within six to eight weeks. For the time being, the food bank will have to pay market rent for its storage facility in Longwell Green. Anyone or any company willing to sponsor the food bank’s rent, or part of it, or make a cash donation, can contact the food bank on 07776 493221 or make cash transfers via 60-12-11 account number 26641860. Due to the demand on its services, the food bank hopes the local community will continue to give food generously through the drop boxes at Tesco, Waitrose, Tesco Saltford, Saltford Hall, Chew Magna Co-op and the post office at Pensford. Currently the food bank needs sugar, jam, peanut butter, chocolate spread, tinned rice pudding, deodorant, shower gel, shampoo and tinned carrots. “We look forward to when we

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Let's seize this chance for greener future

A

cross the UK, citizens are emerging into a world that’s both familiar and strange. As I write, we can see our families but not hug them. We can go to pubs but not swimming pools. Only some of our children are back at school, the majority stuck at home. For many, the human and economic costs of Covid-19 have been tragically high. For others, the pandemic has been an opportunity to reconnect with nature, learn new things and be with loved ones. How can we support the people whose lives have been so badly affected by the pandemic and build on the positives? Many people are urging the Government to prioritise a green economic recovery. This means embarking on a massive energy efficiency retrofit programme (creating many jobs), linking industry bailouts with netzero goals and investing in green technologies, energy-efficient

construction and world-class public transport systems. The UK’s Climate Assembly uncovers a consensus for this green-led recovery. Set up by Parliament to understand public preferences on how the UK should tackle climate change, it’s made up of 108 people from all walks of life selected to represent the UK’s population in terms

of demographics and levels of concern about climate change. Its newly released interim report reveals that an overwhelming majority of Climate Assembly members want Government, employers and others to support changes to the economy and lifestyles which help achieve the UK’s net-zero emissions target.

A total of 79 per cent of assembly members strongly agreed or agreed that: “Steps taken by the Government to help the economy recover should be designed to help achieve net zero.” And 93 per cent of assembly members strongly agreed or agreed that: “As lockdown eases, Government, employers and/ or others should take steps to encourage lifestyles to change to be more compatible with reaching net zero.” This is a clear steer for central and local government to put their commitment to reaching net zero front and centre of recovery policies, for the health and wellbeing of our citizens and our planet. I hope they’re listening, because it would be a further tragedy of Covid-19 if we went back to filthy air, rising CO2 emissions and throwaway culture. LIZ BARLING

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Chocs away! When Fry's was king of the air

A

t the start of the 1930s, construction of Fry’s factory at Somerdale was in its later stages and most production had been moved there. The management of the company was led by Cecil Fry and Egbert Cadbury and they were never slow to seize an opportunity for publicity. Air travel was becoming established, although the preserve of the wealthy, and someone at Fry’s had the bright idea of delivering chocolates by air. From 13 September 1932, the company hired a De Havilland DH 80A Puss Moth from Western Airways, based at Whitchurch Airport. This aircraft was a three-seater monoplane but could carry several crates of chocolates or cocoa instead of passengers. The inaugural flight took four hundredweight of malted milk cocoa from Somerdale to International Tea Stores, then a major grocery concern, at Heston, Middlesex. It was a public relations dream, attracting great media attention and being mentioned in 127 newspapers and periodicals. Further flights followed, the longest being on 17 October when 29-year old Charles Anderson Scott flew 210lb of chocolates from Somerdale to Renfrew in an extremely turbulent 3 hours

Top left, the Fry’s plane – a De Havilland DH 80A Puss Moth. Above, ready to load the cocoa on 13 September 1932 Photos courtesy of the Cadbury Archive, Mondelēz International

40 mins. At Renfrew, the flight was met by Mr Wishart, who was Fry’s supervisor in Glasgow, and a representative of a Glasgow confectioner. Although this was Scott’s first flight for Fry’s, he was a veteran of long-distance flying, having made the first solo return flight between England and Australia in 1931. Early in 1933, the plane, registration G-ABWZ, was loaned to the Houston Mount Everest Expedition, and Fry’s supplied a consignment of chocolate for this. The expedition was not aiming to climb Everest but to fly over it, as this had never been achieved and was a technical and physiological challenge in the absence of pressurised cabins. Funding was obtained from Lady Houston – hence the branding – and perhaps Fry’s hoped to see photographs of their brand name against a backdrop of the world’s highest mountain. But this was not to be. The expedition involved five aircraft, of which the three De Havillands, including G-ABWZ, flew to Karachi with the pilots, while two specially modified Westland biplanes were shipped out. It was the Westlands that were used for the two flights over Everest on 3 April and 19 April, the second needed as it had been too dusty to take good photographs on the first trip. The

expedition was a success and the photographs were a valuable aid in planning Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of the mountain 20 years later. G-ABWZ was back in Fry’s service shortly afterwards but it is believed that the ‘chocolates by air’ operation petered out soon afterwards. We don’t know what happened to the plane next but it was sold to the Plymouth and District Aero Club early in December 1938 and its registration was cancelled in November 1940. We are indebted to the late John Dunford for researching this story. July,2020 2020 July,

■ MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Priorities in uncertain times

B

ACK in March, it was announced the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections were postponed until 2021 and I made the decision to stay in post. Over the last few months, life has changed for all of us as we have navigated our way through the global health emergency, and my main priority has been supporting the police and partners during this uncertain time. As restrictions continue to be slowly and gradually lifted, we all have a personal responsibility to follow the Government’s advice to lessen the impact of the virus and save lives. While we are living with the threat of coronavirus, officers will continue to engage, explain and encourage our communities to adhere to current regulations and will only ever use enforcement if necessary

and proportionate to the circumstances. We have all sacrificed so much over the past few months – some of you more than others – and we cannot let our efforts go to waste. With life returning to some sort of ‘normal’, I wanted to tell you about my priorities for the year ahead and how my team are working hard to keep local people safe. For the next 10 months that I’m in office, my priorities will continue to be: • Protect the most vulnerable from harm; • Strengthen and improve local communities; • Ensure the police service has the right people, right culture, right capabilities; and • Work together effectively with other police forces and key partners to deliver better services to local people.

Following the public health crisis, there are particular areas under those priorities that will be a key focus over the coming months, including violence reduction units (VRUs), oversight of the efficiency of the criminal justice process, supporting victim services, with a particular focus on domestic abuse, and engaging with all local communities. It’s more important than ever to hear your voices, concerns and how you’ve been impacted by coronavirus, so I can understand what you need from your policing service. Finally, I encourage you to tune into my regular Facebook Live webchats, where I put your questions to Chief Constable Andy Marsh. Over the last few months, our webchats have largely focused on coronavirus and policing but, as restrictions continue to ease, it’s important

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens we start to address other community concerns. For more information about Facebook Lives, please visit my website: www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov. uk. Until next time, remember to have compassion, look out for one another and stay safe. Sue Mountstevens

n a statement to the Commons, Boris Johnson told Members of Parliament that from July 4 many businesses and sporting and social events can restart, made possible by the Government reducing social distancing to just over three feet or above whenever a six and a half feet distance cannot be observed. This is in line with the Covid-19 risk assessment system that has seen the level drop recently from four to three. From the beginning of next month, the relaxing of the rules means that pubs, bars and restaurants will be able to open their doors as long as the guidelines are followed and the necessary precautions are implemented to mitigate against an increase in transmission rates, which continue to drop alongside cases of death. These will include customers having to give their contact details when they enter a pub or restaurant and changes made to the way in which goods are ordered and served. In England, hotels, bed and breakfasts, holiday cottages, campsites and caravan parks will also be permitted to allow guests, and two households of any size will be able to meet either indoors or outdoors with the option given for people to stay overnight. In addition, libraries, community centres,

“Upon the earth distress of nations; the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” Luke 21 v 25 & 26 “There shall be famines and pestilences, and earthquakes in diverse places.” Matthew 24 v 7 These words were spoken by Jesus Christ in answer to the question put to him, “Lord, what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the age?” We believe that these signs are now being fulfilled in world affairs, and herald the return of Jesus Christ to establish God’s kingdom on earth.

cinemas, galleries and museums will be able to welcome visitors once more, as will hairdressers and places of worship. The announcement made by the Premier will undoubtedly come as a relief to many, especially those who work in or own businesses in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries that have been struggling financially since midMarch when lockdown was first announced. I am delighted that the country is finally on the road to recovery taking one, cautious step at a time towards a new normal. n ADVERTISING FEATURE

JULIAN House has launched its annual Circuit of Bath Walk and is calling on the public to join them in stepping out and standing up against homelessness. The sponsored circular walk, now in its 19th year, takes place on Sunday September 27. Participants will walk around some of Bath’s most beautiful countryside and surrounding villages, with spectacular views across the historic city itself. While the charity is encouraging as many people as possible to take on the full 20-mile route, participants can choose their own distance and starting point, thanks to the five checkpoints along the route and a free shuttle bus service between each. Because of the coronavirus, Julian House has had to cancel or postpone all its other fund-raising events for the year and, until recently, close its charity shops and bike workshops. This has cost the charity

Walkers fight homelessness £200,000 in income that would fund its services. Senior Community & Events Fundraiser, Jess Gay, said: “The Circuit of Bath is a really important event in our fund-raising calendar – especially this year. “Everything our participants raise in sponsorship by taking on the walk will be used to help fund our vital services, including our hostel and domestic abuse refuge, which have been in high demand during the pandemic and will likely continue to be as lockdown eases.” “We are very aware of the situation around Covid-19 and will continue to monitor

and follow the advice being issued. The safety of the community, participants, staff and volunteers is and always will be our top priority and, thanks to the staggered start points, social distancing can be followed if still necessary by September. “We would like to reassure anyone who purchases a ticket to the event that they will have the option of a refund if the event has to be cancelled for this reason.” The entry fees are adult £12, child £6 and family £25. Dogs are always very welcome. Jess added: “While the participants’ entry fee goes towards the cost of organising the walk, every pound and penny they raise through sponsorship goes towards helping us support vulnerable men, women and children in our care.” Further details and tickets can be found at www.circuitofbathwalk.co.uk. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Anika Gardiner Team Vicar St Francis Church & Keynsham Parish

I

assume that most of us are aware of what happened in the US at the end of May and has since spilled over into countries across the world ever since. I am talking about George Floyd’s death and the events that have unfolded since. I have to admit that I cried, got angry and cried some more. It is by no means the only violent incident against the BAME community in the US, or anywhere else for that matter. What struck me was the brutality of it and, admittedly, the fact that it was all filmed and put online. It was all very public. This event caused huge uproar worldwide and led to a number of Black Lives Matter protests, of which the majority have been peaceful. Racism is not isolated to one country. It doesn’t just happen in the US. It happens in our country, too. Our BAME brothers and sisters have endured decades of injustices. We don’t

have to look far to see that. We are not innocent. As well being upset, sad and angry, seeing these stories of inequality and injustice made me feel ashamed. Ashamed that I haven’t done more to combat these injustices. As a Christian, I believe that we are made in God’s image. Because every life has value in God’s eyes, and because we are called to be God’s love and compassion –walking towards the pain of ‘the other’ – there are a number of ways in which we can respond to racial injustice. I know that not all of our readers share my faith but, apart from the first point, I think we can all take note of the other points that are taken from the following reflection by the Rev Dr Cathy Okoronkwo, a vicar in Swindon: Pray: We can be intentional in praying against the unjust structures and systems which impact people of colour adversely. Examine: We should examine our hearts

and our conscience, being honest about our unconscious biases and the position our privilege grants us. Engage: We can engage with the discourse (no matter how uncomfortable it feels), do the work by increasing our knowledge and educating ourselves on the issue of racial injustice. Challenge: We should challenge racist and derogatory comments (even those said jokingly or flippantly) because indifference and complacency is an evil that is destroying the fabric of our society. Stand Up: We can stand up against all forms of racism, whether covert or overt; including societal injustices that result in socio-economic and health inequalities. Jesus models for us how God loves justly, and how we, as Christians, can love publicly in a world of inequality. Together we can leave a legacy for the next generation, a future where black and brown-skinned people feel safe and valued in society.

Rotary's £1,500 for Music Man Project KEYNSHAM Rotary has donated £1,500 to Keynsham Mencap’s Music Man Project. The club had earmarked a major part of its community fund-raising activity to supporting Keynsham Mencap this year. This would have included the proceeds from its annual plant fair, scheduled for May 16, but the event had to be called off because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Luckily, some funds were available from last year which, augmented from Rotary International Foundation sources, raised a total of £1,500, which has been now been transferred to Keynsham Mencap. This money is going towards their Music Man Project, which provides enjoyable and engaging experiences that give ‘voice’ to their musicians and help educate the wider community about the valued work undertaken by Mencap. A spokesperson commented:

The Music Man Project is going from strength to strength

“Keynsham Mencap has only the highest aspirations for what can be achieved by a person with a learning disability, and the Music Man Project provides inspirational performances from our creative artists and offers a platform to raise awareness about the incredible difference music can make.

“As a result, emotional wellbeing, basic skill development, self-discipline, teamwork, co-ordination, communication and social skills are all significantly enhanced through the study of music. “In the last year the group has grown in membership and the number of performances has

increased. Therefore, this kind donation will go a long way to providing some much-needed musical equipment that includes percussion tubes, a mixing desk, additional drums, shaky eggs, triangle holders, and small folding tables for members to put instruments on safely.” Lisa O’Brien, chairperson of Keynsham Mencap, added: “This donation will really help in these challenging times. The Music Man Project, although not able to meet in person, has used Zoom to link members and their music together, encouraging home-made instruments and certainly bringing joy, particularly to some of our rather isolated members.” Keynsham Rotary is keen to support such community projects and looks forward to being able to resume its fund-raising projects in the coming months. Information about Rotary activities and membership can be found at www.keynshamrotary.org

n NEWS A CAKE-making business in Keynsham is sending sweet treats to NHS staff to thank them for all their hard work. The NHS cupcake appeal has been launched by Laura's Kitchen Cakery in St Ladoc Road. For every £2 cupcake ordered for frontline health workers, it is matching the order by making one for free. The business was set up just over a year ago by Laura Walker, who started the cupcake offer just as the lockdown took effect. She said: “We are distributing them to the teams working so hard to keep us all safe.” This includes the janitors, estates teams and porters, as well as the doctors, nurses and medical professionals at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, and local service providers. Almost £1,000 has been donated (that's 1,000 cupcakes) and more than 660 have already gone to NHS workers including staff at Keynsham ambulance station, local GP practices and midwives, and staff at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Laura has been helped by a friend, Alice Scanlon, an occupational therapist at the RUH, who has been 'cake bombing' the various departments on her behalf. Laura said: “Alice is an absolute hero. She’s even arranged a team of cake fairies to help her! She's working in co-ordination with the head ward sister, and between them they are making sure the donations are reaching the teams most in need of a morale boost, thanks to the people of Keynsham and Bath. “Some of the cakes have been sent to specific departments at the request of the donor, to

eavers, Cubs, Scouts and the Explorers have showed their Scouting spirit by taking part in activities from home. The group has enjoyed virtual fitness challenges, follow-me baking classes, scavenger hunts and more – all designed to combine fun with core Scouting skills. K2 Colony has been preparing for a technology-driven future with activities focused on coding, while Axe Troop got in the dancing mood with a silent disco. Frome Troop has been sharing skills and interests by teaching members how to make origami crowns, improving their fishing skills and working towards their activity badges. They have also been spending some time in nature, hosting a sunflower-growing competition – the tallest one wins, so watch this space for the winner! Meanwhile, a number of our young people have been working hard to complete the final steps of their Chief Scout Gold Award. The award is the highest a Scout can receive and is achievable only through years of dedication and hard work. Avon Troop Scouts Zach, Harry, Ralph and Lloyd are now completing their final steps, along with Corinne and Alex from Chew

Troop. To achieve this award is commendable even under regular circumstances, so these six Scouts deserve an especially big congratulations. One Chief Scout candidate’s work was so incredible we just had to mention it. Corinne has learnt to knit, and has used this skill to make bobble hats for newborn babies at the Mary Ward at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The colours she used reflect the ‘traffic light’ system in place at the RUH, designed as a quick visual cue that ensures babies get the precise level of care they need, and is a perfect example of how our Scouts are still helping the community. We are very proud of all our young people and what they have achieved during these unusual times, and we look forward to keeping you up to date with what they get up to next. n Want to get involved? While recruitment of new leaders is temporarily suspended, we are always looking for expressions of interest from members of the public. Whether you want to get involved with our young people directly or in a behind-thescenes role, please get in touch and we will get you stuck in as soon as we can. Nature's sights and

A ‘bouffant’ blackcap and singing Jenny Wren from the Dawn Chorus in April Photos: Dave Sage

S we start to come out of lockdown, there is much to reflect on with regards to the last few months, says Kathy Farrell vice chair of Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust. It has been a difficult time for all, with restrictions on how we move around, what we can buy and do, and who we can see face to face. But it is perhaps nature that has had the most surprising impact on our lives, as we coped with these curtailments. More people have been walking, running and cycling, getting out of the house for their daily allowed exercise, and doing so admiring the change of season as winter turned to spring and into summer before their eyes. We've listened to the song birds singing their heart out as they attracted their mate, and watched as butterflies fluttered across gardens and meadows. The hedgerows have been glorious, the blackthorn and hawthorn turning them white with blossom, with bluebells brightening the spaces below our woodland trees. And all these things have lifted our spirits. It is proven that interaction with nature is one of the best ways of helping with depression and loneliness in our stressed world, so this year's fabulous early summer weather came at a good time. And it isn't only us that have benefited this spring. Our wildlife, left alone, has prospered too. Less air and motor traffic, pollution, both noise and fumes, have meant that our wild creatures have been given space and pure air to go about their lives in peace. If only we could continue this on their behalf!

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group Of course, not everyone has been able to venture out of their houses. The many people who have been required to self-isolate for medical conditions have lost out on the wonders of nature. But hopefully many will have enjoyed the new-look BBC Springwatch - what a revelation that the programme could be produced during this time when there is normally a crew of hundreds at the Springwatch “village”. It not only lived up to expectations, it far surpassed it. The extraordinary Chris Packham with his step-daughter Megan in the New Forest producing new science and charts, along with the other presenters socially distancing in their own environments from Cornwall, Scotland, mid Wales and even the banks of the River Thames - everywhere wildlife was abundant in the peace and quiet. One highlight of each episode was the 90-second short clips showcasing nature's beauty and sound, each by a different wildlife cameraman, filmed in their own wild spaces. Breath-taking! All our Keynsham Group Wildlife Trust activities for the season have had to be cancelled. But that didn't stop some of our members from getting out there on their own, replicating planned trips. We encouraged people, via social media, to send us their lockdown wildlife photos to share (and continue to do so), and during this time of lockdown our website has been created, www. keynshamawt.org, so our season has not been a complete disaster. The summer continues, and although people are heading back to shops and meeting up in

small groups, we urge you keep on walking in the countryside and parks and watching out for the wildlife and natural wonders there. n POETRY Lockdown ‘Are you enjoying lockdown?’ People often ask Well, I think that’s what they’re mumbling through their face mask ‘You don’t need to have that mask on when talking on the phone! You cannot catch the virus indoors when you’re alone!’ I still answer the question but my response varies day to day It depends how I’ve been coping with this bizarre new living way ‘I’m feeling very good, thank you!’ As I enjoy the break from life Discovering how to be a perfect and dutiful wife The house has never looked so clean, the oven shines like new I bake, I scrub, I iron and sort cupboards through & through I read sitting in the garden and I’m grateful for this space Trying to catch a few rays to tan my pasty face I hug my husband often because he’s here and because I can I’m very lucky to have such a fit and healthy man I also hug my teenage son and kiss his handsome face I can’t imagine what it’d be like if he didn’t share our place The two of them are having fun with PC games and throwing ball I love the fact they get on well and they’re not arguing at all The cat is very happy that he can always find a lap Never on his own and always a place to nap I take a brisk walk once a day as my regular exercise To deliver things to my mum because she is being wise At eighty-six years old she’s keeping to herself Inside the porch I leave her things on the designated shelf We have to social distance when we go out to shop In the queue we move six feet before again we have to stop We enter when we’re told to and follow the one-way system I cannot miss what I need because in order I did list ’em On Thursday evenings the community has a new routine Clapping for the frontline staff, it’s quite an emotional scene We’re clapping for so many folk who’re helping to get us through Serving their fellow countrymen and we’re thankful for all they do   But ask me on another day, my response may be quite glum ‘I can’t stand all this housework and I’m bored sitting on my bum!’ ‘I can’t watch another update followed with questions on repeat’ ‘I’m fed up with scrolling Facebook and I don’t know how to “tweet”!’

LLLL BBBBBBBB SSSSS WWWW

I can’t give my mum a hug, my son can’t kiss his bird But at least we all have FaceTime to share the spoken word I worry about a lovely friend as he battles to survive And pray he’ll be home soon, he’s just got to stay alive! When chatting to a neighbour, I get a little close She recoils like I’m disgusting or scary like a ghost I see the terror on her face and take a few steps back Her face returns to normal and we continue with our chat When boredom strikes, I hit the fridge, it is my new best friend If this carries on much longer, I’ll be two tonne by the end! I let my husband cut my hair as all the ends were split But his has become unruly and he won’t let me touch it I sometimes have emotional days when I just sit and cry Frustration, grief and boredom are just some of the reasons why ‘Everything is so unfair! What’s happening to our lives?’ People losing loved ones, parents, siblings, husbands and wives The virus does not discriminate, it tortures anyone on any day Some suffer very little whilst others are taken away In hospital they’re on their own, no loved ones at their side And the journey is a very turbulent, tough and bumpy ride The hospital staff are amazing and really are the best We must Stay Home, to Save Lives and Protect the NHS So, to summarise I smile, I hug, I cry, I frown This is the reality of being in lockdown! © The Keynsham Poet NIEH 10/05/2020

PEN TO PAPER Wash Your Hands

Those little bugs are everywhere, On everything you touch, So wash your hands, get rid of them, Not asking very much. Everything that you have touched Has more bugs than you think, So do not leave them on your hands, Just wash ’em down the sink. Sing Happy Birthday to your friend, (We all know that refrain), Then to be sure you’ve got them clean, Repeat it once again. George.Liddell@blueyonder.co.uk

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Welcome back to the book reviews from Bath & North East Somerset’s Library service. During the lockdown many of our colleagues have put together a number of reviews of the books they have really enjoyed.

Dogs of War

From colleagues from Bath Library comes:

Adrian Tchaikovsky

Barkskins Annie Proulx

Adult Fiction

The 4.50 from Paddington Agatha Christie

reviewed by Emily Parker, volunteer co-ordinator

As the lockdown continued, I decided to revisit one of my favourite authors, Agatha Christie, in a tale featuring enigmatic sleuth Miss Marple. Travelling on the 4.50 from Paddington, Mrs Elspeth McGillicuddy sees - as two trains run side by side - a woman being murdered. No one believes her but she knows her friend Miss Marple will. But there are no suspects, no other witnesses - and no corpse. As with all of Christie’s books, there are wonderful characters, a country house and a seemingly wealthy family with skeletons to hide. There are plenty of twists and turns as the story moves at a fast pace. A great read as always from the Queen of Crime.

A fascinating examination of the future of warfare, told through the eyes of Rex, a genetically engineered living weapon, who only wants to please his “master”. This military sci-fi tackles wider issues such as the accountability of unmanned combat drones, and the ethics and ramifications of military artificial intelligence in an engaging and thought-provoking read.

This incredible book tells the story of two immigrants to New France and follows their families over the next 300 years, against the background of the deforestation of the New World. I loved how the histories of the generations are intertwined and how choices made Adult Non-Fiction by ancestors have ramifications to The Stranger in the modern day. Proulx does an amazing job of the Woods: the making each character unique - a extraordinary story of mixture of their upbringing and the last true hermit inherited family traits. Michael Finkel The only downside is that, as a reader, you fall in love with From our regular reviewer, Emilie the characters and will them to Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant succeed, yet knowing the stories will inevitably have to pass to the This is the story of Christopher next generation, and the lives of Knight, a man living in Maine, USA, these rich characters will fade into who disappeared when he was vague family reminiscences. in his twenties - driving his car The book feels like a genuine deep into the woods, leaving the family history and creates a sense keys on the dashboard and walking of nostalgia for a time and place for 10 days until he found the base LOW camp he would not leave long gone. Five stars from me!

Hydration stations help hospital staff to stay cool DEDICATED hydration stations are helping frontline staff at the Royal United Hospital in Bath to stay refreshed, thanks to funds raised in response to the coronavirus. The stations, which look like small fridges, have been installed across the RUH, and there is now one on every ward. Rhyannon Boyd, Head of Fundraising, said: “It has been difficult for our staff to have easy access to a cold drink on our wards. They also have the added pressure of wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) throughout their shifts. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors and an NHS Charities Together grant, the new hydration stations are making a big difference to staff. We’ve also been able to provide thousands of reusable water bottles for our colleagues.” Victoria Marlow, Senior Sister on Philip Yeoman Ward, said: “We really appreciate the generosity that has enabled us to have this on our ward and we all love the water bottles too. It will definitely make it easier for us all to keep hydrated.”

The care, the compassion and the commitment demonstrated day in, day out, always shines through. “We are looking for stories which move and inspire us as well as filling us with pride. “It really helps with the judging if you can bring to life the reasons you are nominating an individual, the impact they have had on you or others, and why you feel so moved to put them forward.” If you want to nominate someone, send details to sirona. communications@nhs.net by 5pm on July 31. n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

S

hortly after it was announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were to be pushed over to 2021, we caught up with Olympic medallist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor. Siobhan began her successful swimming career here at Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club and is always happy to stay in touch with grassroots swimming. Here’s what she had to say about the last few months:

Olympic medallist Siobhan takes stock of her lockdown life

Siobhan: I am well, thank you! I am currently back at home with my family – my mum, dad and brother - just outside of Bath. I have been living and training in Loughborough for the past six months, but I came back home just before the lockdown.

Siobhan: I don’t believe that I have had Covid-19 thankfully. I have been social distancing and following the Government guidelines. All our training has been cancelled until further notice, so I have just been spending my time trying to keep fit and healthy. KASC: At the beginning of the pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. How did you feel when the IOC (International Olympic Committee) eventually confirmed that it would be postponed until 2021? Siobhan: There was a period of time after the Government had announced we were going into lockdown, and my training group were told there would be no access to swimming pools until further notice, but the Olympics were still set to take place in July 2020. I was definitely stressed and upset at this point, but as soon as it was announced that the IOC agreed to postpone the games, I felt relieved. It was definitely the right decision. I’m still focussed on getting to Tokyo and I’m determined to be. KASC: We understand that elite athletes train on a four-year cycle, with the Olympics being the end game. How does this affect training

KASC: We know you do a lot of work with CrohnsandColitis.org. uk. What does the coronavirus pandemic mean for people, such as yourself, who live with an inflammatory bowel disease? Siobhan: I think the best thing I can say is to follow the Government advice, and the guidelines that the experts have put out there. We all just have to protect ourselves and each other as best we can and not take any unnecessary risks. But most importantly, we have to stay positive, and only read helpful and accurate information.

Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club: Firstly, we hope you are keeping well during this crazy time and want to ask you where you are spending your lockdown.

KASC: Before we start with swimming questions, we wondered if you believe you have had Covid-19.

time with my family. I don’t live at home anymore, so I have really enjoyed the time I have been spending with them, going on nice walks and playing games.

KASC: What advice would you like to give to all the young swimmers at KASC?

Siobhan-Marie O'Connor has been enjoying the peace of outdoors now that you have to add an extra year to your preparations? Siobhan: Normally, we do always work to a four-year cycle, so this is uncharted territory, but it’s new and different to everyone. All we can do each day is stay positive and trust that the people in charge will point us in the right direction when the time comes. KASC: Assuming you do not have access to a 50m pool, when was the last time you were in the water? Do you miss the smell of chlorine? Siobhan: I don't have access to a pool unfortunately! The last time I was in the water was Friday March 20. I didn’t think I would miss it as much as I do. My skin normally always just smells constantly of chlorine, but now it doesn’t, and I miss that too in a weird way! KASC: The majority of Olympians, for example track and field athletes or cyclists, are still able to train in their usual environment. How do you think this will affect the performance of swimmers at the Olympics next year? Will we continue to see records being broken? Siobhan: To be honest, I don’t really know but I’m pretty sure we will still see records being broken. Sport is an amazing thing and

Got News? Call Keynsham Voice on 0117 9082121

the unexpected always happens. I remember after the rubber suits got banned in 2009, people thought it would be years and years before we saw world records broken again. However, records were broken again within a couple of years, and in London 2012, eight swimming world records were broken. KASC: What are you doing to maintain your fitness? What does your daily training schedule currently like? Siobhan: I am lucky because our coaches have sent us very detailed fitness plans, which include cardio sessions (usually on watt bikes), strength sessions, rehab work, yoga, ab circuits etc. Most of these are on Zoom with our coaches, and this is giving structure to my day, keeping me as fit and strong as possible, and boosting my mood. KASC: It's a really unusual time for everyone. What are you doing to look after your mental health during lockdown? Have you decided to learn a new skill or take up a new hobby? Siobhan: I have always wanted to learn to play the piano, so I ordered a keyboard from Amazon, but I have not got very far with it yet! I have been mostly FaceTiming and speaking to friends, and spending

Siobhan: Stay positive, keep your chins up and look after those around you. Don't worry about missing out on training time, because we are all in this together, and you will regain your swimming fitness very quickly once we can swim again! Enjoy this time that you are spending with your families, because when you are older you will realise how valuable it is. KASC: Is there anything you are enjoying about lockdown that has taken you by surprise? Siobhan: I am really enjoying walking. My mum is part of a walking group and knows lots of lovely walks around the area where we live, and I definitely took for granted how beautiful it is. I didn’t realise how calming and refreshing a walk could be. KASC: And finally, what is the first thing you are looking forward to doing when lockdown over? Siobhan: Seeing my family and friends, giving them a big hug, and then going for a lovely meal somewhere nice. KASC: Thank you for your time Siobhan, it was lovely to catch up with you, and we understand you are now back up at Loughborough training in the pool again - we’re not jealous! Good luck in the Olympics next year and we look forward to catching up again soon.

It's safety first as viewings surge AFTER a record number of property sales in 2019, the coronavirus pandemic - along with Government restrictions on valuations, viewings and house removals - certainly put the brakes on Eveleighs’ growth. But now these restrictions have been lifted, so too has Eveleighs’ resurgence, with valuations, sales and completions increasing once again. Robin Eveleigh, of Eveleighs Estate Agents, said: “It’s been so nice to be back at work again, and the pent-up demand we hear about has certainly been the case for us. “In the last month alone, we have taken on more new properties across BS31 and BS14 than ever before, and the demand from buyers is incredibly strong also, so we couldn’t be more happy, to be honest.” But this bounceback to business also comes with a cautionary note concerning the ever-present coronavirus. Robin explained: “We have a duty of care to protect our staff,

vendors and buyers so are taking the following measures. Anyone viewing will be encouraged to wear PPE. Masks, gloves and shoe covers are all available, and hand sanitiser is used, although we carry out contactless viewings, with all doors and cupboards opened prior to the viewer’s arrival wherever possible. “Social distancing is also obviously respected. Prior to viewing, buyers are being asked to do a drive-by to make sure they are definitely interested in the property, and also to watch a ‘video tour’, which is a new feature recently introduced that is proving to be really popular. “We are receiving great feedback about these safety measures and, of course, we couldn’t resist purchasing our own Eveleighs face masks.” If you are considering selling a property and would like a valuation, or would like to discuss your options and our procedures, then please call the office on 0117 904 9000 or email info@eveleighs.com

Club's call-up for women

BRISTOL Baseball Club has launched a women’s team to meet a growing demand from players across the region. The team will join the British Baseball Federation (BBF) and Women In Baseball UK (WB-UK) in growing the game across the South West and be part of a national league from 2021. If Government guidance allows, players from Bristol could take part in some training sessions and practice matches as preparations for a WB-UK Championship to be held later this year. “We have had a growing number of women join the club in the past couple of years and play for our teams in competitive baseball leagues,” said club chair Richard Evans. “With the initiative by the BBF and WB-UK and the number of women who signed up to play for us this year, we feel now is the right time to take the next step in the development in the club.” At this year’s indoor training, 10 women took part, and in 2019 Molly Willcox and Tsz Yan Chan were members of the Bristol Buccaneers and Bats, who played in the South West Baseball League (SWBL). Molly Willcox, who is a club director

and a member of the WB-UK organising group, said: “I am delighted to see us take this step. Bristol is one of the most progressive sports clubs in the country and we all look forward to developing the best women’s team in the country.” The BBF and WB-UK initiative will also see the setting-up of a GB women’s team under the leadership of Doris Hocking, founder of WB-UK. “I am delighted that we will have a women’s team in Bristol, and it is WB-UK’s aim to work with Bristol Baseball Club to make it a centre of excellence for the sport. And I know the club will want to see their players representing GB in the future.” A spokesman for the board of the BBF said: “Promoting women's baseball is a crucial element for the success of our sport’s development at the local and international level. “We are delighted that Bristol Baseball Club has joined the initiative to promote women’s baseball. This is another example of the club being innovative and going into the community to develop our sport.” Anyone from the region interested in taking up baseball can contact the club directly at info@bristolbaseball.co.uk

n SALTFORD GOLF CLUB

How we're helping to fight Alzheimer's

SALTFORD Golf Club has confirmed how the £16,000 raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK during Marcus Woodward’s captaincy year will be used. It will help fund several early-stage research projects, networking and collaborative events, and engagement with local people about dementia research. Alzheimer’s Research UK unites dementia researchers across the Universities of Bristol, Bath and the West of England. At the University of Bristol, Dr Jonathan Hanley and his team are investigating the connections between brain cells. Changes at these connection points may impact the functioning of nerve cell networks in Alzheimer’s, but it’s not clear if they can repaired. Alongside associates in the South West, Dr Hanley will investigate key changes that occur in Alzheimer’s disease.

They will hope their knowledge of the molecular players will reveal new ways to create drugs to help treat Alzheimer’s. The golf club is now looking for help in raising funds to safeguard the club’s future. One initiative is its 2C lottery scheme, which costs less than £1 per week to enter. There are four quarterly prize draws, and twice a year a top prize of

uk and search for ‘Saltford Golf Club’. The club is also offering prizes for the top donators this year, which include 4 ball vouchers for the oldest golf course in England - Royal North Devon - plus Salisbury & South Wilts and other leading clubs. Meanwhile, the club has confirmed that Andrew Martin, who is club captain for this year, will have his tenure extended for one more year. This is because of the coronavirus pandemic that has caused so many events to be cancelled and why the club is looking for extra revenue. Andrew will be captain until September 2021, when Phil Turvill takes over. Andrew’s chosen charity is the MS Society but he is also organising a club event in aid of the NHS on July 11. n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

£2,300 lottery aid to safeguard future KEYNSHAM Bowling Club has been awarded £2,300 of National Lottery funding towards running costs during the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus and shutdown of businesses has left bowls and other sports facing uncertainty. In response, Sport England announced a £195 million package to help the sport and physical activity sector. Within the package is a £20 million Community Emergency Fund of National Lottery money to deliver immediate funding to those who have a role in supporting the nation to be active but are experiencing shortterm financial hardship or the ceasing of operations due to the impact of coronavirus. Tim Hollingsworth, chief executive of Sport England, said: “As the body responsible for the growth of sport and physical activity participation, we want the vital grassroots organisations that make sport and physical activity happen in this country not just to come through this crisis but to be in a position to thrive again in the future.

“The £20 million Community Emergency Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, is part of a multi-million-pound package of support we are providing to ease the pressure on a huge number of the organisations who are central to the nation’s health and wellbeing. “We are proud to be able to provide vital funding to Keynsham Bowling Club to help it through these extremely challenging times.” The grant will allow the club to cover the costs of maintaining the green and other expenses. Barrie Davis, the club’s chairman, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant from Sport England, which will help cover the ongoing costs of running the club, at a time when our expected income has been seriously impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.” Bowls England has been sending out regular updates to member clubs, and Keynsham secretary Dave Hockney has been advising the club’s membership.

There was good news at the beginning of June when the relaxing of Government restrictions allowed some external sports, including bowls, to restart, subject to the 2-metre rule. Members were able to open three of their six rinks and allow two players on each one at a time. Buildings had to remain out of bounds, with only access to toilets allowed, and only the basic equipment, mats and jacks used, which had to be sprayed regularly. A couple of weeks later members were allowed to play pairs, allowing four players on a rink at a time – a total of 12 on the green. Members are obliged to phone treasurer Roger Price to book a time slot and players must depart the green well in time before the next players arrive. At present about 12 members are playing as many are still selfisolating. The club is looking forward to further lifting of restrictions to allow greater participation.

n CROQUET

Learn how to play! PEOPLE interested in taking up croquet are invited to join a new course for beginners. Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club is running five sessions, starting on Tuesday July 7 at 10am. The morning sessions will cover all the key skills for £25, which will be refunded if you join the club. All equipment is free – just wear flat-soled shoes. If you can’t make that date, the club’s coaches can arrange another convenient time. Croquet was one of first eight sports that the Government allowed to reopen following the lockdown. At first this applied to members only, but now the club can welcome visitors. To find out more and to keep in line with Government guidelines, call club chair Mo Boys on 01225 708540 or 07970 922867 or email moboys@talktalk.net You can also visit the club’s website at www. camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk The club plays at the Redpost Ground in Whitebrook Lane, opposite the Red Post Inn, Peasedown St John, Bath, BA2 8JH.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

New members welcome as our green reopens FOLLOWING changes to the lockdown from the Government at the start of June, Frys Bowling Club has been able to open, with the green being used by members throughout the week. The club has followed advice from Bowls England, and the club’s senior officers have put procedures in place to allow play to take place as safely as possible. The club is open for new members,

whether or not you have played bowls before. Bowls is a sport that provides benefits to both physical and mental wellbeing, and is a great way to meet new friends, even with the current restrictions in place. If you have never played before, the club is able to offer tuition. All tuition can be given in accordance with the procedures the club has put in place. Due to the current restrictions because
