AS Remembrance Day approaches, Keynsham Town Council and St John the Baptist Church are organising a Covidsafe ceremony. St John’s will hold a service for 30 invitation-only guests at 9.30am on Remembrance Sunday, November 8. The service will be filmed and livestreamed to YouTube, where local residents can tune in. Dawn Drury, deputy town clerk at Keynsham Town Council, said: “We chose YouTube because it’s a platform a lot of people have access to. Facebook is starting to charge, and many people with smart TVs can get YouTube up on the big screen.” Following the streamed church service, a procession

will move through town to the cenotaph for around 10.45am, ready for an 11am service. As at the church, the procession will be limited to the 30 invited guests, and social-distancing measures will be observed. The next stop will be the memorial gates for the traditional reading of names and ceremonial gunfire. Services will also include special guest speeches from veterans. Community members are encouraged to stay in their homes to observe the service, rather than to flock to the High Street, in order to mitigate coronavirus-related risks. The service can be viewed live on Sunday November 8 by going to youtube.com and searching for ‘Keynsham Remembrance Day Service 2020’.

Airport rapped over expansion battle BRISTOL International Airport has come under fire for its decision to appeal refusal of its planning application to increase capacity from 10 to 12 million passengers per year. The airport’s move has been condemned by Bath & North East Somerset Council and campaigners in Keynsham. Councillors in North Somerset turned down the airport’s expansion plans earlier this year, saying the increase in aircraft and traffic would have a detrimental impact on the local area and the environment. Bath & North East Somerset Council was consulted as a neighbouring planning authority and objected on highways issues. The council also made it clear that, having declared a climate emergency, expansion of the airport would be incompatible with its goal to achieve carbon neutrality within the next decade. However, the airport has now formally lodged an appeal against refusal of planning permission. Rich Prior, of Keynsham Extinction Rebellion, said that campaigners were surprised by the airport’s decision. He said: “We’re quite shocked they would consider appealing in view of the climate emergency. The situation hasn’t changed. “People are flying less now anyway, so there seem to be no grounds to expand. “The vote against by North Somerset was overwhelming and a democratic decision. With Covid, it seems all the more surprising they should consider appealing.”

Protesters at a march through Keynsham earlier this year in protest at the airport's expansion plans Councillor Sarah Warren, B&NES joint cabinet member for climate emergency, said: “We are extremely disappointed that Bristol International is appealing against planning refusal. “At a time when we are facing a climate emergency, we are resolute that the economic benefits of an increase in passenger numbers are clearly outweighed by the detrimental impact on the environment.” “More flights would result in more emissions from both aircraft and traffic heading to and from the airport, impacting residents in Bath and North East Somerset. “With the ongoing impact of coronavirus and the current uncertainty surrounding future travel behaviour and, as a consequence, the airline industry itself, it seems highly unlikely that the passenger increases predicted by Bristol International Airport will be met. We therefore urge that the appeal by the airport is rejected.”

£1.1m Covid aid for High Street KEYNSHAM High Street is to receive £1.1 million in Government funding to help it recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is one of 68 historic high streets across the country that will share a total of £95 million. The aim of High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme is to provide a new lease of life to compensate for the decline in the number of shoppers. The lead partners for the schemes – mostly local

authorities – are working with Historic England to develop projects to transform and restore disused buildings into new homes, shops, workplaces and community spaces, restoring local historic character and improving the public realm. High Streets Minister Kelly Tolhurst MP said: “Our high streets are the beating heart of our communities and, now more than ever, have a crucial role to play in helping our towns and cities to recover from the pandemic.”

The airport is currently allowed 3,000 night flights in summer and 1,000 in winter and has applied to increase this to 4,000 throughout the year from summer 2021. When the airport revealed its expansion plan, it provoked opposition from residents and campaigners in Keynsham. At a public meeting in the

town last December, concerns were voiced about noise and air pollution that would be caused by extra flights, as well as the effect of extra car journeys to and from the airport. In January, protesters staged a march through the centre of Keynsham to further highlight environmental concerns about the proposed expansion.

'Moorings could FEWER boats would have been damaged by a sudden drop in the River Avon in Bath if moorings had been available in Saltford, says a houseboat resident. Boater Avril McGovern is convinced her friends’ homes would not have sunk when a sluice gate suddenly opened if safe moorings had been available in the village. She has been still waiting to find out what condition her boat is in but said many others cannot be saved after the “disaster” in Twerton. The site has some of the River Avon’s few safe moorings locally after Bath and North East Somerset Council temporarily removed the moorings at Mead Lane in Saltford to assess the condition of the riverbank. It has not been moving boaters on from the site during the lockdown but said it might do so after a meeting this month. Ms McGovern, who has lived on her boat for 18 months, said:

Avril McGovern’s boat after the sluice gate failed

“My boat needs to be taken out to make sure it’s OK. It sat down flat on the riverbed when the water level dropped. “My friends weren’t so lucky – three have completely lost their homes. It’s having a devastating impact on them.” Some 47 boats were affected after a software fault in a sluice gate caused the water level to drop by 1.8 metres. James Stuart-Wigley had only had time to fling his laptop and two dogs to safety before his boat sank. He said it “looked like something out of a disaster movie” after it was refloated. Boaters are being supported by the Environment Agency, B&NES Council, the Canal and Rivers Trust and homelessness charity Julian House. “Mead Lane is the only other 14-day mooring,” added Ms McGovern, who is a teacher. “I’m 100 per cent convinced fewer boats would’ve been affected if it had been available.”

have saved our boats from disaster'

She claimed council cabinet members had ignored scientific evidence and removed the moorings to “appease the wealthy residents” of Mead Lane. The decision in January followed months of tensions between residents and boaters, with accusations of prejudice and intimidation from both sides. Ward councillor Duncan Hounsell said at the time the moorings had been a “failed experiment” that was put in place without services for boaters or controls on how long they stayed. “The council realised in January it could have put people at risk of homelessness,” added Ms McGovern. “They need to put in better provision for boaters. I don’t feel like I’m a priority for the council. They aren’t moving us on because of the Covid legislation. We need that site [Mead Lane]. There’s nowhere else for us to go.”

Left, Avril McGovern. Above, moorings at Mead Lane in Saltford Cabinet members were due to consider the results of a structural survey of the riverbank at a meeting on October 8. Ms McGovern said she hoped they would take the incident at Twerton into account when making their decision. She challenged council leader Dine Romero on the issue when she appeared on BBC Radio

Bristol. Councillor Romero responded: “In January we took the decision to temporarily close the Mead Lane moorings because we needed to make sure it was safe and suitable. “We haven’t reopened the moorings but we’re complying with government guidance that action shouldn’t be taken to move any boat on during

the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was taken so we could undertake this survey. If people were moored there and the bank collapsed, who would be liable then? “We haven’t reopened the moorings but we’ve extended our emergency duties. We aren’t moving people on from where they’re currently moored.” The council said no action would be taken to move boats on from Mead Lane until a decision about the moorings was made by the cabinet on October 8. Clues to cystitis in cats

A

s vets, we often see cats with problems urinating in odd places or having trouble urinating. Often this can be due to cystitis, which means an inflammation of the bladder. The most common type of cystitis in cats is called feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), which means cystitis with an unknown medical cause. It is thought that stress is the most significant underlying cause as it can affect the delicate lining of the bladder, which becomes inflamed when exposed to urine. It is more common in young cats, especially those that are anxious in nature or have been stressed, for example by another cat. Cystitis is a very uncomfortable condition characterised by straining to urinate, urinating in unusual places, passing small, frequent amounts of urine and blood in the urine. Cats will often lick their genitals more frequently as well. Due to their narrow urethra, male cats with cystitis are at risk of developing a urinary obstruction, often called a ‘blocked bladder’, which is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent veterinary attention. It is therefore crucial that if you do not think your male cat is able to urinate, or are unsure, that you have him checked over by a vet without delay. In female cats, and male cats that aren’t ‘blocked’, cystitis is usually treated with a few days of anti-inflammatory medication to soothe the inflamed bladder. Maximising water intake via wet food and multiple water sources, especially water fountains, can also help. Cats that have had cystitis before are likely to get it again, but it can be prevented by managing your cat’s stress. This may include the use of a pheromone diffuser, providing hiding places, special diets, or bladder supplements. Your vet will be able to advise on the best options for your cat.

Food bank's new

KEYNSHAM Food Bank is introducing a new way of supporting people who are made redundant, amid concerns of an impending wave of job losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If someone seeking help is offered a Keynsham Food Bank e-voucher, they should tell the professional they have been made redundant and may be asked to show proof. When the e-voucher is issued, ‘redundancy’ will be noted on it. The client can then visit the food bank each week for six weeks, receiving food for seven days for each family member. The client will not need to request a further voucher during the six-week period, by which time it is anticipated they will have received their universal credit payment. The food bank will continue to offer the normal support to those experiencing a food crisis for other reasons. Food bank co-ordinator Alan Hale said: “For some time we have been anticipating the potential for a wave of redundancies and we have built up our stock levels.

“Our message to anyone suffering redundancy is that we are here to offer food support and signposting to other help and advice. “We don’t want people who are suddenly out of work to feel that they have to expend the savings before they seek support. I recall a lady who spent all her savings on feeding her family before seeking help and support. Please don’t put yourself in that position. “The help we give is provided to us by the local community with love and compassion to our clients. Any of us could suddenly find ourselves in financial difficulties.” People are able to access vouchers through the local Citizens Advice, through the B&NES Welfare Scheme on 01225 477277 or their local GP, health visitor, church minister, social workers and many other professionals working in partnership with the food bank. Meanwhile, food bank volunteers have been settling in at their new storage unit at Westway Garage, Marksbury. Its first unit was at

ON THE BEAT

Help to cut risk of Covid-19 rule breaches

A

t the time of writing, it appeared that further Covid-19 lockdowns were likely to be imposed. We have had our fair share of breaches of the rules, mainly flouted by young adults, but also broken by children at secondary schools. Many of our local beauty spots are being enjoyed by groups of friends, which is not an issue, but the groups quickly merge and in turn the rules are broken. But the other problem area has been highlighted by local secondary schools. They have been trying to stick to their guidance of bubbles for teaching. But students have been congregating outside at the start and end of the school day, causing large groups to gather at the gates. There also seems to be an influx of parents collecting their children by parking on Chandag Road near Wellsway School, which compounds the problem. If you need to drive to collect them, park further afield so the

with PC James Evans students move away from the school. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and minimising the spread. We don’t want to issue fines for breaching the rules, but if we need to, we will. n There have been more shed and garage break-ins over the last month, with tools and bikes targeted. I have previously advised making sure you have adequate security measures in place, but you also need be aware that if you have tools in the storage area, they may be used to counter

any security measures. Where possible, use sensor lights, CCTV and good quality locks with ground anchors. If you need advice, please contact the neighbourhood policing team through the Avon and Somerset Police website. We also have a number of Neighbourhood Watches running in Keynsham and surrounding villages which can provide information about local incidents. n In the last month, Keynsham has been hit by a number of arson attacks. These started as low-level incidents, where waste bins were set alight, but more recently garages and outbuildings have been targeted. This is very serious and we need to stop the offender quickly - arson with intent to endanger life carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison. I urge anyone with any information to let us know. If you want to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers (0800

555 111) - your details will not be recorded. When incidents occur, we conduct an investigation, and the information we gain from the initial account will affect how the investigation will go. If you are a victim or a witness and you phone in with very limited information, the call taker who is likely not to know the local area – may conclude that there are no further lines of enquiry and the incident will be filed as source. But if you can provide extra information, such as that the area is overlooked by a number of houses, or you know that a neighbour has a CCTV camera, this could give us further lines of enquiry. Also, if an offence occurs near you and you have information that could be of use, please be a good neighbour and either advise the victim so they can tell us or tell us directly. This can be done on with the 101 phone number, or you can message us through the Avon and Somerset Police website.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

he 21st of this month sees the anniversary of the Royal Navy’s most famous victory, at the Battle of Trafalgar. Research in 2005 established that one of the sailors in Nelson’s fleet, Thomas Needs, was a Keynsham man. What do we know about him and his experience at the battle? Thomas Needs was baptised in Keynsham Parish Church on August 11, 1765. He was the eldest son of Sarah, the widow of Anthony Ollis, and her husband, also Thomas Needs. We know nothing of the younger Thomas’s life before he joined the Navy, or whether he volunteered or was press-ganged. There were a significant number of volunteers; although life at sea was hard, this was also true for many at home. Disastrous harvests in the late 1790s led to very high food prices, hunger and much social unrest, including riots. Thomas probably joined up in 1803, when there was a major recruiting campaign – he would have been one of the older recruits. We know that on May 2 that year he transferred from the Salvador del Mundo, which was

Local sailor who survived to

HMS Victory – HMS Conqueror was smaller, with only two gun-decks a receiving ship for new recruits near Plymouth, to the 74-gun HMS Conqueror. He probably went to the Mediterranean initially, as HMS Conqueror was part of Nelson's fleet, charged with keeping the French fleet confined to the port of Toulon. When they broke out in April 1805, Nelson's fleet including

the Conqueror pursued them across the Atlantic to the West Indies and back. Eventually, the French joined up with their Spanish allies at Cadiz. The combined fleet sailed in early October, with reinforcements for the French army in Italy. But the British fleet under Nelson was waiting to intercept them and on

October 21 the two met in battle off Cape Trafalgar. By this time Thomas Needs had risen from the ranks of ordinary seamen to become a petty officer with responsibilities as a signaller. HMS Conqueror was fourth in the first line of ships, led by Nelson on HMS Victory, to attack the combined French and Spanish fleet. Perhaps as a signaller Thomas was involved in passing on Nelson's famous message in flags to ships further down the line: "England expects that every man will do his duty." HMS Conqueror was right in the thick of the action. At a crucial stage in the attack, men on the ship’s main deck were ordered below. Thus, they were less exposed to enemy gunfire and were able to reinforce the lowerdeck gun crews and help maintain the rapid rate of gunfire. Perhaps because of this, HMS Conqueror suffered fewer casualties than almost every other

tell the tale of Trafalgar ship in the British fleet. Only three were killed and nine wounded out of a total complement of over 600. By the time Nelson died, after being hit by a marksman’s musket ball, 18 of the French and Spanish ships had been destroyed or captured and victory was assured. A major motivation for all ranks in the Royal Navy at this time was prize money, which was shared between all. Captain Pellew of the Conqueror took the surrender of the French Vice-Admiral Villeneuve and his flagship Bucentaure. He then had the challenge of securing the enemy ship and bringing it to a safe port, so that prize money could be claimed. It is unlikely that Thomas Needs was part of the prize crew transferred to the Bucentaure to take it in tow. In the event, after two days struggling against galeforce winds, the Bucentaure struck rocks near Cadiz harbour and had to be abandoned. The Conqueror rejoined the

pay. This was considerably more than an ordinary seaman’s £117s-6d (£1.87) but paled into insignificance beside a captain's share, £973. But the government, perhaps bowing to popular sentiment, also made a special extra payment of £300,000 to the fleet in 1806. This was more generous than the prize money total, so that Thomas Needs received £26-6s-0d (£26.30) as his share. He and his naval colleagues were the heroes of their time. Had it not been for Nelson’s victory, there is little doubt that Napoleon’s army, which was ready and waiting to cross the Channel, would have invaded. Thomas Needs lived another 12 years after his adventures at Trafalgar and doubtless had many exciting stories to tell when he returned to England. Keynsham Methodist Church has been holding the regular event at its Victoria Centre in the High Street since 1998. But since their suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people have been making enquiries about when they will be open again. A statement from coffee room volunteers says: “We know how much the coffee room means to so many of you and we enjoy welcoming you into Victoria, but we need to ensure that when we open our doors again we are providing, as much as we can, a Covid-risk-free environment. “So we seek your patience and reassure you that, just as soon as we consider it to be appropriate, morning coffee at Victoria will again be part of life in Keynsham High Street.”

ONE of Keynsham's youngest and most formidable fundraisers has achieved success once again, this time for Suicide Prevention Bristol. Molly Hale, 19, has supported various charities over the last seven years, raising a total of about £5,000. Her latest project was an online raffle that attracted prizes donated by local companies and businesses. The draw was broadcast live on Facebook by Molly with a helping hand from her cousin Leah Gould, while mum Sarah Hale was the camera person. The project was so successful that £1,600 was raised for her chosen charity. Through her efforts, Molly won the Keynsham Rotary Club Young Person of the Year Award in 2018 and was this year awarded the Keynsham Town Council

Young Citizen of the Year Award. Molly said: “It was very pleasing to achieve such a fantastic amount of money because when I set up the raffle I was hoping to raise £200. “It was also rewarding to receive the town council award in recognition of the charity work that I do.” The success of the raffle echoes that of an event to help homeless people where she raised over £1,250. For the last four years, Molly has been volunteering with Keynsham Mencap, helping with three social groups, day trips and a holiday. She has also been volunteering with the Keynsham Covid Group. Molly is due to take up a place at Bath Spa University very soon to study Primary Education and Early Years.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We cannot be complacent over coronavirus AS we leave the summer behind us, I’ve been reflecting on the challenges we have all faced over the last few months. I have been continually impressed by the commitment and determination of individuals, families and communities who have made personal sacrifices to help reduce the spread of the virus. 2020 has undeniably been a difficult year for everyone and I expect we will continue to see regulations and rules change throughout autumn and winter. The Chief Constable Andy Marsh and I will continue to provide updates and clarification in regards to policing coronavirus in our regular Facebook Live sessions. Last month, we saw new laws coming into force banning social gatherings of more than six people across England. As I’m sure we are all aware by now, these new regulations apply to all ages, to gatherings indoors and outdoors, in private homes, public outdoor

spaces and venues such as pubs and restaurants. There are some legal exemptions to the six-person rule, including when households or support bubbles are larger than six, as well as gatherings for work or education purposes, weddings and funerals, to name a few. The increase in cases is a stark reminder that we cannot be complacent; the virus has not disappeared. We need to continue to be cautious, act with common sense and follow the Government’s regulations, whether we like the rules or not. I have been impressed by how officers have dealt with policing the pandemic, especially as ‘business has returned to normal’ in recent months and demand has increased. I fully support their approach to engage, explain, encourage and, if necessary, enforce the regulations as a last resort. I am pleased this approach has been successful, as it has never

been more important to ensure we are supporting and being supported by local people and communities. We need to work together to get through this. We must take personal responsibility to protect ourselves, our families and our communities from the virus. I urge you all to remember that by following the regulations, you are making a difference. Finally, I recently announced I had allocated an additional £200,000 to support local charities, voluntary organisations and community groups to help deal with the consequences of the coronavirus. Such initiatives across Avon and Somerset are encouraged to apply for grants of up to £5,000. The next and final deadline for the Commissioner’s Community Action Fund (CCAF) is November 30. I want you to apply for the funding so we can support you and your innovative projects; by working together we can contin-

ue to make improvements and drive the change needed to help our communities. The application is a really straightforward process and we want to say yes to as many local initiatives as possible. For more information, please visit www.avonandsomerset-pcc. gov.uk/working-for-you/police-

Take a look inside our college - virtually! St Brendan's College offers new computer suites and a revamped library space STUDENTS and staff at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are settling into post-16 life – albeit in a quite different format than in previous years. As the only sixth-form college in the region, St Brendan’s is a popular choice for learners who are ready to embrace the next step, and this year the college welcomed a record number of new enrollers. With more than 1,000 students aged 16-17 joining this September, St Brendan’s has become ‘the place to be’ for many young adults across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and beyond. With state-of-the-art facilities and a

wide choice of A-level and Applied General subjects to choose from, the Brislingtonbased college is attracting students from far and wide and looks set to continue its growth into the new year. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, St Brendan’s has met the challenge of adapting its teaching techniques both online and face-to-face, while delivering a huge range of courses that are not available to students elsewhere. Among its provision of more than 60 subjects, the college offers students the largest choice of A-level languages anywhere in the region, as well as a full choice of music

and performance courses to post-16 learners, an unusual find in today’s educational landscape. St Brendan’s also has its sights on developing its facilities further, and after their summer break, students returned to find new computer suites and a transformed library space, including a university-style silent study zone. The college was due to hold its first ever online open day for Year 11 students and their families on Saturday October 3, 10am2.30pm. It was set to include a virtual tour, careers advice and live Q&A sessions with teachers of all subjects. Visit www.stbrn. ac.uk for further details.

Book brings back memories DO you remember the old shops at the top of Bath Hill? Or the sights and smells of the livestock market by The Talbot? The publication of a new book on our local area will bring back memories of these and many other places and events. Keynsham & Saltford 1945 – 2020 has been researched and written by the Local History Society over the last few years. It is a full-colour book of 176 pages, with over 200 illustrations, that tells the story of the area since the end of the war. The content is in two parts, with the first recording events over the period, ranging from the important to the unusual. Starting with the VE Day celebrations in 1945, it runs up to just before lockdown this spring. Longer sections tell the story of Somerdale, the 1968 flood and Keynsham Hospital.

The second part looks first at personalities with a local connection, some well-known, others not. There are chapters on particular themes such as Keynsham High Street, schools and churches. Many local sports clubs are also featured. The book was edited by society chairman Richard Dyson, who said: “We felt it was important to describe our recent history in a way that local people would enjoy. “I am very grateful to all those who have shared their memories, lent us pictures or made other contributions to what has been quite a big project.” The book, priced £15, was due to go on sale on October 1. It will be available direct from the society, with details on its website at www.keysalthist.org.uk, by emailing books@ keysalthist.org.uk, or telephone 0117 9864453.

Artificial pitch verdict looms A FOOTBALL club are eagerly awaiting the decision on their plans for a new 3G Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) at Longwell Green Community Centre, following recent changes to the proposals. Residents have been split over the plans for the pitch, which would replace the grass pitch that is home to Longwell Green Sports FC. South Gloucestershire Council has received more than 300 comments, half from supporters and half from opponents. Although there are already stands in place around the pitch, together with floodlights that have planning permission for use up to 10pm at night, the new 3G surface would allow the pitches to be used in wet weather or during the winter months. The application (reference: P20/07175/F) is awaiting approval by South Gloucestershire Council. To find out more, visit https:// developments.southglos.gov.uk

Accolade for regeneration THE transformation of Keynsham’s former civic centre into housing has been recognised in a national awards scheme. Bath & North East Somerset Council has been commended in the MJ Awards for its regeneration of the site. The annual awards celebrate best practice among local authorities across the country, with the council commended for innovation in property and asset management. The 1960s civic centre was redeveloped to provide housing by the council’s property company, Aequus Construction Ltd (ADL). A total of 95 studio, one and two-bedroom apartments were created at the renamed Riverside View, with all but 17 now sold. Redevelopment work is continuing, with the South Block due to be completed this autumn.

he Prime Minister has unveiled a new set of limitations in light of the rising numbers of Covid-19 transmission rates, warning that “significantly greater restrictions” would be imposed if necessary. In a speech to the House of Commons, Boris Johnson said that the United Kingdom has reached “a perilous turning point” and that the new regulations have been “carefully judged” to achieve the maximum reduction in the ‘R’ number whilst mitigating against damage to lives, livelihoods and the economy. The Premier said that the new measures may last for six months but that everything will be monitored in line with coronavirus data and medical and scientific advice. Fines for people eligible to wear masks have been increased to £200 for a first offence, and all shop workers and taxi drivers and their passengers are required to wear one. Similarly, gatherings of

more than six people will incur higher penalties. Where possible, people are being asked to work from home once again. All pubs, bars and restaurants have been limited to table service and these venues are required to close at 10pm. Exemptions to the “rule of six” have been disallowed, which means that people playing indoor team sports are only permitted to meet in groups of six. The rules have also changed as regards weddings and civil partnerships - only 15 people are now able to attend, congregating in groups of six or less, but funerals are still allowed to have up to 30 attendants. The Prime Minister has also announced further Government spending to provide support to the police and local authorities in England to enable the implementation of these changes, which are not a return to the full lockdown that we experienced during the first half of the year.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Biodiversity holds the key to our survival

T

here has been a huge increase in the number of people growing vegetables during the Covid-19 pandemic. The world hasn’t met a single UN target to protect wildlife and life-sustaining ecosystems in the last decade. In the UK we’ve failed to reach 17 out of 20 UN biodiversity targets. Humans and animals depend on nature, from worms and insects that make the soil richer, to trees that provide shade, food and territory. That’s biodiversity, and it’s the foundation of every ecosystem. Ecosystems are complex. Soils, plants and trees create habitat and food for birds and animals. In turn, birds and animals support the trees, plants and soils. A healthy ecosystem needs three things: multiple different species, each doing a unique job; multiple similar species that can do the same job if something happens to one of them; and large numbers of each species so they remain

Tree-planting schemes are one way our politicians can help viable. The more biodiversity, the more resilient the ecosystem, and the better it functions and adapts to changes. An ecosystem that’s losing biodiversity declines slowly at first, but eventually hits a tipping point and falls off a cliff, threatening all species within it. Why does this matter? Because ecosystems power human endeavours. They underpin our

livelihoods, economies, food systems, health and quality of life. Biodiversity and climate change are linked in a deadly embrace. Climate change is a major driver of biodiversity loss, which threatens human civilisation. Biodiversity loss also contributes to climate change. When forests, grasslands and soils are depleted or destroyed, they release vast quantities of stored

carbon dioxide. Biodiversity loss is as serious as climate change. We must support nature in our gardens (planting for pollinators), and through our shopping (organically or ecologically farmed food). Local politicians must roll out projects and support community endeavours (e.g. Keynsham Town Council’s tree-planting scheme and environmental grant programme). Nationally, at the very least governments must meet their biodiversity and climate change commitments under international treaties. The UK government should replace the EU’s Common Agricultural and Fisheries policies with ones that support and enhance nature. As citizens, we must hold our elected representatives to account, and vote for the political party that goes furthest to protect biodiversity – otherwise we may find ourselves extinct. LIZ BARLING

is more than some people have, and we have found our resilience in God.

e are living in a weird time: we have come out of full lockdown, but things haven’t been easy and now there are new laws coming into place. The culture around us is shifting almost daily. Just the other day, some of us sat down at church to think about new things we could do to try to build up fellowship and community again, only for guidance to be changed that very evening and most of our ideas thrown out the window. This is just one example of the many things we are all dealing with each day. I am not sure what your life has looked like for the last few months, but we have been a ‘shielding household’ and only fairly recently have been allowed to start leaving the house again, after isolating during the week of my son’s first birthday at the beginning of March. One of the biggest questions I have been asked is: “How did you manage to spend five months without leaving your house?” The obvious answer is we have a toddler who learnt to run during

lockdown, so we did not have time to realise the days going by with all our chasing-around after him. But joking aside, we found it was all about our mindset and where we found our resilience. We may have been locked in, but we have a garden, which is more than some people have, and we have found our resilience in God. The Church has dealt with changing culture for centuries, with the belief that God is the rock it builds its life on, that God is unchanging yesterday, today and forever. The writer of James in the Bible says that when we face trials, God will be with us; there is not an ‘if’ we face trials option, unfortunately. God promises to be with us through all the human experience and to walk alongside us, and just like us, sometimes the Church has done well, other times it has not. But it has always tried do build itself upon God, and we as individuals are also given that opportunity to trust and build ourselves upon God.

ere at The Chocolate Quarter we have a tradition of celebrating Harvest. We give thanks for all that we have received throughout the year, and this year we remember especially the state of our planet. Staff and residents will make a tree of handprints and write what we’re grateful for on them; we will collect food for Keynsham Food Bank; my colleague will make a traditional barley sheaf loaf; and other colleagues have been collecting pine cones for our Harvest display. All our retirement village residents are given the option of having a free ploughman’s lunch delivered, and we will aim to watch a short thanksgiving celebration video on our Vimeo channel. Go to vimeo.com and search for ‘Chocolate Quarter Harvest 2020’ This is a time when Churches Together in Britain and Ireland have asked us to consider the wellbeing of our planet, so the Harvest theme for this year is caring for our planet.

While most of us live with abundance, we remember that half of the world’s species have become extinct in the 50 years of my lifetime. We consider the impact of our carbon use on the climate and how these two things together jeopardise the future for our young people. We think about the impact of mass extinction, climate change and wars on migration and how our society will need to be much more welcoming in the future, with less land available and fewer pollinators to fertilise our crops. If you find this depressing, Age UK has a brilliant one-minute video on actions we can take. Go to youtube.com and search for ‘Age UK climate change’ to find activist Paul Kington’s top tips. So, whether we are religious or not, now is a good time to reflect on the good things in our lives and to think about how we can use fewer resources and live more in harmony with others and the Earth.

Shining a light on loss PEOPLE are being invited to light a candle at a Keynsham church to express their sense of loss during the pandemic. They can do so at St John’s Church from Monday October 26 to Friday October 30, between 9am and 2pm. Mike Burke, Missioner and Team Vicar for Keynsham Parish, said: “We recognise that there has been a shared experience of loss of different kinds in our community - the loss of physical contact, employment, income, the loss of a business, educational opportunities, the

loss of familiar routines and security, as well as the loss of health and the loss of loved ones. “So we are encouraging people to recognise and express those feelings by lighting a candle.” The church will also hold an evening memorial service for bereaved families on Sunday November 1, which it hopes to stream live on Facebook to make it available to as many people as possible.

n 1st KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Reaching new heights!

F

ollowing the excellent news that Scouting has been allowed to continue under the guidance of the National Youth Agency, our young people have been keener than ever to get stuck in. And as some of our Scouts have been climbing the walls during lockdown, it seemed a good chance for them to do it outdoors in Burrington Combe, Somerset. They had to scale a 50-foot rockface, navigating around rocky outcroppings and finding natural footholds along the way up. Not only did they show amazing amounts of bravery and push themselves out of their comfort zones, they skilfully worked together in teams. They belayed each other (under strict supervision), with one Scout belaying the ‘live’ rope and another letting the dead rope run through the locking mechanism. They showed huge amounts of trust in each other and themselves, leaving the leaders extremely impressed. One of the Scouts, Lloyd, said: “I enjoyed it. It was fun on the way up. I felt like I wasn’t going to stop.” Jacob explained: “It was probably easier to go down than it was to go up because I just had to trust the ropes, but on the way up I had to find holds.”

Scouts tackling the rockface at Burrington Combe

Johnny added: “It was scary but fun!” The specialist instructors in our Go High activity team assisted them with the climbing, with one instructor per trio and extra leaders for encouragement and guidance. Not only has it improved the Scouts’ confidence, it may also give them a new hobby to safely explore. Elsewhere, our Go Entertain team have been keeping spirits high through campfire songs and games at Chelwood — Rocky Beavers particularly loved it! The newly formed team led the colony through favourites such as Boom Chicka Boom and Alive, Alert, Awake, Enthusiastic. October was supposed to mark the start of an autumn filled with fund-raising events such as our auction and book sale and clay pigeon shoot. These have unfortunately been cancelled at this time, yet leaders and trustees have worked hard throughout the year to deliver a Scouting programme. We will have an update about fund-raising in the next month, so keep your eye on next month’s issue and our Facebook page. We also took part in our first virtual AGM, with over 50 trustees, leaders and parents tuning in to discuss the exciting year ahead for 1st Keynsham Scouts.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library

Adult Non-Fiction

An Ordinary Copper David Leach reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library Assistant In October 1965, the old Keynsham Library (pictured above) had only been open 17 days when a young David Leach started at the Somerset Constabulary Training School, Canonsgrove, Taunton, along with six other new recruits. This was to be the start of a career that would span nearly 31 years. From a hasty retreat in a Hillman Imp police car to escape being shot by a man brandishing a 12-bore gun during his probation, to writing this biography, David Leach gives a glimpse of the ups and downs of an “ordinary copper”. He describes the processes he had to face during 1960s policing and compares how crimes and the ways of investigating them have changed over the decades. Overseeing destruction of livestock during an anthrax outbreak; witnessing postmortems; new technology, such as the 1966 introduction of Stornophone personal radio, saving legwork; confidential paperwork carried in the overengine storage area of the latest Hillman Imp panda car; smoking

pipes whilst on duty; ensuring royalty were kept safe during local events; Bristol riots; Badminton horse trials; drug culture - these are among the topics you will read about. Adapting many anecdotes used for after-dinner talks, local author David Leach has written an interesting account of how he adapted to changes and danger with common sense mixed with a little splash humour. Adult Fiction

The Doll Factory Elizabeth Macneal Picked by The Sunday Times as best paperback for 2020, this follows in the same genre as The Miniaturist. On a crowded London street in 1850, Iris Whittle, a successful dollmaker with her sister Rose, meets the artist Louis Frost. Louis is an ambitious painter who yearns to have his work displayed in the Royal Academy,

and he is desperate for Iris to be his model. She agrees but only on the condition that he teaches her to paint. Dreaming of freedom and against her family’s wishes, Iris throws herself into a new life of art and love, unaware that she has caught the eye of a second man. Silas Reed is the real villain of the story but a complex man. He is a curiosity collector, taxidermist, enchanted by the strange and beautiful. After seeing Iris at the site of the Great Exhibition, he finds he cannot forget her. Iris’s world expands as her talent grows but then so does Silas's obsession - and they will meet again. This is an excellent historical novel in the very popular gothic crime genre. Full of colour, intriguing characters and great atmosphere. Children's Fiction

always full of adventure. She is a gutsy little lady who, through magic, has developed a habit of shrinking to the size of a pepper pot (hence her name) and growing to her correct size again at inappropriate times! The stories are all funny, with the amazing Mrs Pepperpot always being the star of the show. The chatter between her and her hapless husband charms children and adults alike. Mrs Pepperpot is always true to her character - sometimes bossy, always clever and keen for adventure. Oh, I almost forgot - she can talk to animals as well when she is small - a trait worthy of any superhero! But Mrs Pepperpot is a gentle heroine and, true to form, doesn’t let on about her superpowers because … “old women don’t usually talk about such things.” These classic stories are little gems to be treasured by the tall and short, young and old.

Warm welcome as new primary school

Starting the learning journey: Wendy Carver and pupils at Two Rivers C of E Primary

KEYNSHAM’S newest school, Two Rivers C of E Primary, has opened its doors to its first intake of pupils. The 15 children who have started in the reception class are the first in what will eventually be a school of up to 420 pupils aged four to 11. The children are beginning their education in purpose-built accommodation on the Wellsway campus and will move in 2022 to the permanent premises being built on the Hygge Park housing development in east Keynsham. Their current building has classrooms for reception and Year 1 with outdoor space used daily and use of a bigger playground at lunchtime. The classroom is organised with new resources and the children have access to superb technology to support their learning. Head of school Wendy Carver said it was exciting to open the school at last and to see the children arriving in their new turquoise uniforms. “The children are absolutely lovely and we feel that they have settled well into their new school and environment, especially in these uncertain times. They are happy, outgoing and independent children,” she said.

opens its doors to its first pupils

“The classroom smells like a new house with amazing new resources and lots of space! We have such a committed staff team at Two Rivers and are enjoying working together. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.” Annie Smart, executive headteacher, said: “We are delighted to see our first class of children enjoying their new school and especially all the brand-new resources. Both Mrs Carver and I have been very impressed with the way that the children have settled into new routines and made some lovely friendships already.” The school is part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, meaning pupils have access to trust facilities at other schools, such as science experience days at IKB Academy and sports events at Wellsway Sports Centre. Two Rivers also benefits from the educational expertise and skills within the trust, which has a strong track record in primary school performance. Andrea Arlidge, the trust’s chief executive, said: “As a trust we have a family of 13 other schools from Bristol to Bath. We are really excited about opening Two Rivers C of E Primary School, which is an important development for families in Keynsham.”

n NEWS

You can join us for a safe Halloween

by Charley Rogers A COVID-safe Halloween celebration is being organised for youngsters in Keynsham. Keynsham Community Response Group (KCRG) is encouraging households to decorate their front gardens and windows with Halloween-themed displays. The idea is that children and their families can walk around the town, collecting clues from each display without having to go directly up to the houses, therefore reducing the risk of catching or spreading coronavirus. Children can then hand in their completed clues at the end of the trail and receive a package of individually wrapped sweets that have been handled safely by as few people as possible. David Biddlestone, Labour town councillor for Keynsham, told the Voice: “Ideally we’ll have three routes, so there will be something accessible for everybody, within

walking distance. We’ll give out paper maps, and children can see which houses have been decorated.” The idea, says David, was sparked by the desire to create something that would allow children to have fun in a safe way.

“Obviously, with Covid restrictions, a lot of families won’t want children going doorto-door, but we still want them to have fun. So we decided we could set something up that would keep everyone safe at the same time.” Plans have not yet been finalised, but the group hopes more households will sign up. David said: “We’re encouraging anyone who would like to be involved to please get in touch. We’re looking to set up routes based around Chandag Road, one around Queens Road, and one on the Somerdale estate.” Anyone wishing to put up a display should email Vicky at keynshamcommunitygroup@ gmail.com by October 17, stating where they live so they can be added to the map. The group is also seeking sponsors for sweets to give out at the end of the trail. Again, anyone interested in being a sponsor should get in touch via email. To follow developing plans, see KCRG’s Facebook page @KeynshamCommunityGroup

n BACK TO NATURE

Happy return to the great outdoors with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

T

he Keynsham group of the Avon Wildlife Trust had its first walk since the start of Covid-19 lockdown, writes chairman Dave Sage. The first Saturday in September was bright, sunny and warm, and it felt like the 11 of us were being welcomed back after a long break. After a careful health and safety briefing near the Lock Keeper pub, we enjoyed a socially distanced walk, following the River Avon downstream, opposite the new and impressive-looking houses in Somerdale. Birdsong is always muted at this time of year, but robin, wren and wood pigeon never disappoint. There were plenty of swallows flying near Londonderry Farm, including this year’s fledglings, yet to grow their two long tail streamers and quite hard to distinguish from adult house martins. Both species would be busy feeding on aerial insects, preparing for their long migration back to Africa. On reaching Londonderry Wharf and Rainbow Cottage, we followed the Siston Brook upstream, observing several limestone grassland plants, including agrimony, ragwort and restharrow. A pair of young goldfinches gave us a noisy, chattering flypast. We soon reached Willsbridge Mill, where we were shown round by committee member Rita, who is a regular volunteer at the mill. For anyone who has never visited, it is well worth the walk down from the car park at the

Dave Sage leading the socially distanced group from the Lock Keeper – photo by Rita Andrews As mentioned last month, this season our talks will be conducted on Zoom. Booking is now online for the Friday October 9 talk Mud, Sweat & Tears, tales from a BBC Wildlife TV Producer with Paul Williams from the BBC Natural History Unit - and also for Friday November 13 - Lynx & Lammergeiers in Southern Spain with wildlife guide Julian Sykes. Formerly an iron and steel rolling mill, then a flour mill, it stopped operating in 1968 following the “great flood” which devastated much of the area, including the mill. The buildings, originally restored in the 1980s by the Avon Wildlife Trust, are currently being managed by the Willsbridge Mill Community Group (https://willsbridgemill.com). Points of interest in the valley include the route of an old dramway, which used to carry locally mined coal down to Londonderry Wharf on the River Avon, where it was loaded onto

A red Sympetrum dragonfly photo by Dave Sage

barges and transported to Bath and Bristol. Part of the dramway was routed through a tunnel, which is now an important home for horseshoe bats. There is an ancient wildflower meadow, very diverse and covered in anthills because it has not been treated with fertilisers or pesticides. Recently excavated soil is evidence of a badger sett on the northern slopes of the valley. Siston Brook is a constant feature at the bottom of the valley and although we didn’t see any, it is a good place to spot kingfishers, dippers and grey wagtails, as well

as great spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches in the tall pine trees. The large millpond dominates the lower part of the valley and although it is now drained of water, it is still an important damp site for a range of plants and animals, including amphibians. There is now a smaller pond well-used by young pond dippers. The walk back was no less interesting, with plenty of damselflies still hunting in the riverside vegetation. l For any queries or to share your wildlife photos, please email keynshamawt@gmail.com or phone Kathy on 07850 508702.

WI's support will help swifts breed KEYNSHAM group of Avon Wildlife Trust have been the recipients of Hanham WI’s charity donation for the year. We are very grateful to all the ladies for the work they have put in, in difficult times, raising funds for us. Novel ways were sought during lockdown and beyond, making masks and holding garden sales among the fundraising activities. And recently we received

their cheque for £306.25, which is much appreciated. This money will enable us to organise swift nesting boxes to be made and erected in Keynsham. Swifts have lost many of their nesting locations in older houses and hence struggle to find the means to breed each year after their long journey from Africa. l Right, a swift nesting box containing four nest spaces - photo by Martin Farrell

BIG thanks are due to these three members of Bath Ramblers who are giving up their time to help our community by installing new steps on the lethal Chicken Run slope. Laura Sweetman, who kindly shared this photograph with us, was proud to be their

33 first climber! You can access the steps from the footpath off Lockingwell Road, and they bring you to the route across the fields towards Stockwood - locally known as the Chicken Run (maybe a reader can tell us why it’s called that?)

Triumph of the Nightingale A DISCUSSION on Bristol’s Nightingale Hospital and how it responded to a national crisis is to take place this month. The hospital was set up in just 20 days at the University of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus to tackle the effects of the pandemic. The project involved converting the university’s Exhibition and Conference Centre (ECC) into a 300-bed medical facility to provide extra beds if local services needed them. The temporary hospital was seen as vital in helping support NHS efforts with the pandemic and supporting the local community and wider region at an exceptionally challenging time. Members of the public can tune in virtually to view the panel discussion on Wednesday October 14. The panel will be made up of the university’s

vice-chancellor, Steve West, as well as senior members of the NHS, and construction and infrastructure firm Kier. The round-table discussion will explore what building the hospital involved and will highlight the dedication, hard work and agile response from all involved. After going into stand-by mode at the end of June, NHS Nightingale Hospital Bristol is now being set up as ‘winter ready.’ Initially its lecture theatre will be used to house equipment and stores from the temporary marquees outside the hospital as we head into autumn. Those interested in watching the panel discussion must first register - search online for 'nightingale hospital UWE lecture' to find the registration page. From 6.25pm they can then join the talk online, which takes place from 6.30pm to 8pm and will include LOW a Q and A.

Tasty reward for tidy-up volunteers

Teatime treats laid out for Big Womble helpers at the home of Ericas Davies. Below, some of the bags of rubbish collected during the day A SOCIALLY distanced Big Womble in Keynsham proved to be a big success. Many people took part by tidying up areas of their choice, either singly or with members of their household/bubble, on Saturday September 19. Several then went to the home of Keynsham Wombles founder Erica Davies for tea, coffee and cake. This worked well, as people turned up at different times and nobody had to be turned away to keep the numbers to a maximum of six. Because of the enthusiastic reception, Keynsham Wombles are hoping to stage a similar event in future.

PEN TO PAPER A Prayer Poem

Tony's anthology is a life's work

I thank Thee God, that I have lived In this great world and known its many joys, The song of birds, the strong sweet scent of hay And cooling breezes in the secret dusk. The flaming sunset at the close of day, Hills, and the lonely corn-covered fields.

A NEW anthology has been published of a local poet’s work that spans almost 70 years. Life’s Lines, by Tony Mitchell, contains more than 100 pieces written between 1953 and to date. Tony, a retired teacher, said: “I hope the wide variety of poetic forms, from haikus to a 2,000-word narrative poem, will provide pleasure and sadness, laughter and tears, some good stories and some challenging ideas. They reflect me and mine over a lifetime.” Tony and his wife Hazel moved to Keynsham about six years ago to be near family. Their son lives in the town with his wife and three grandchildren, who are all former pupils of Wellsway School. The anthology costs £10 on Amazon and will also be available at some bookshops.

Music at night, and moonlight on the sea, The beat of waves upon the rocky shore And wild white spray, flung high in ecstasy; The faithful eyes of dogs, and treasured books, The love of kin, and fellowship of friends, And all that makes life dear and beautiful. I thank Thee too, that there has come to me A little sorrow and sometimes defeat, A little heartache and the loneliness That comes with parting, and the word ‘Goodbye’; Dawn breaking after hours of pain, When I discovered that night’s gloom MUST yield And morning light break through to me again. Because of these and other Blessings poured Unasked upon my wondering head, Because I knew that there is yet to come An even richer and more glorious life, And most of all, because Thine only Son Once sacrificed life’s loveliness for me – I thank Thee, God, that I have lived. From Harvest time ’til Christmastide We all of us will cling.

A walk will lift our spirits up When we’ve had months indoors. Watch trees that waver in the wind With apples to be stored. For Autumn now approaches And the days are drawing in. It’s time to find new hobbies And get closer to our kin. Soon winter will be with us With all events it brings,

For this year’s been a strange one And we want to see the end Of sadness and of suffering There’s much that needs to mend. But we must keep our spirits up Still listening to what is said And keep our THOUGHTS on better days That surely lie ahead. Sylvia Kirby

Award for 'fantastic' role model Archie A YOUNG Keynsham rugby player is the winner of this year’s Jack Boulton Award. The award in memory of Jack, who died in 2009, is given each year by Keynsham and Saltford Sports Network to a young sportsman or sportswoman who has displayed many of Jack’s exceptional sporting and personal qualities. This year, the award has gone to Archie Terry, a sporting all-rounder and former Wellsway School student who became a role model for younger pupils. Archie - who is now studying civil engineering at Swansea University - was nominated for the award by James Wetton, under-18s coach at Keynsham Rugby Club. James hailed him as “a born leader and someone that the boys really look up to.” As well as being an exceptional athlete and rugby player, Archie was also “a fantastic human being.” James added: “Archie is well-mannered, optimistic and

Trophy winner Archie Terry with Jack Boulton’s parents June and Dave Boulton and (far left) his nominee, Keynsham Rugby Club under-18s coach James Wetton enthusiastic. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach him over the last two years.” The award ceremony was attended by Jack’s parents Dave and June. After receiving the trophy from Dave, Archie

acknowledged the huge amount of money that the couple and their family have raised for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) in the 11 years since Jack died. Many young people have benefited from the cardiac

screening programme funded by CRY that aims to protect them against undiagnosed heart conditions. It is hoped another screening programme will take place at Wellsway School as soon as coronavirus restrictions allow.

Mixed fortunes for

League rivals Exmouth Town saw the better of the Ks in the FA Cup

The Ks picked up their first point of the season against Cribbs

KEYNSHAM Town have had a mixed start to their new campaign in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, with one win, one draw and two defeats in their opening four games. However, despite falling at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, they progressed to the second qualifying round of the FA Vase. Firstly, it is important to set the scene for what has been done for clubs at the Ks’ level to even contemplate playing football while the Covid-19 pandemic continues. Club chairman Adrian Cole said: “Members of our committee and the management of our four senior teams have all put in countless hours to ensure that Keynsham Town FC is compliant with the return of outdoor competitive grassroots football guidelines that the Government has approved to allow football to be played across the country. “Our Covid officer, Terrie French, put together a comprehensive risk assessment and action plan to protect staff and members of the public attending our stadium, including a deep clean of public areas, temperature checks and ‘track and trace’ information taken before entry, and social distance

markings to aid spectators. It is now vitally important that everyone’s hard work is not wasted. “Football is one of very few team sports granted approval by the Government to return to match play. This brings with it a huge level of responsibility for us all. “Collectively as a game, we must do all we can to keep everyone involved safe at all times, which is why it is immensely important that clubs, players and spectators follow the guidelines thoroughly.” During the summer, the Ks made two high-profile additions to their first team squad from Southern League clubs. Experienced midfielder Jordan Metters joined from Bristol Manor Farm, quickly followed through the Crown Fields gates by defender Jack Dancey, signed from Larkhall Athletic. Manager John Allen said: “It was a real coup when we finally persuaded Jordan to join us this summer. His experience and attacking style will add quality to our team. “He won the Western Premier League title with both Bishop Sutton in 2012-13 and Manor Farm in 2016-17, and was also named the Bristol Evening Post

n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

Caring cousins step out in memory of player P-A TWO cousins have completed an epic walk in honour of a Keynsham rugby player who died after suffering a serious injury. Paul-Andre Blundell (known as P-A) was paralysed from the neck down while playing for Keynsham RFC in September 2001. A few months later, while still in hospital, he died from a blood clot at the age of 26. His parents, Rob and Gerri, set up the Trust PA charity in his memory. The charity is helping to fund the process of converting ground-breaking laboratory science into real treatments for the repair of spinal cord injury (SCI) paralysis. And its work has been

boosted by the fund-raising efforts of Joe Wood, 18, who attended P-A’s old school. After completing his A-levels at OSH School in Stourbridge, Joe won the P-A Blundell Prize for Sportsmanship and Endeavour this year. Joe said: “Being curious, I looked up P-A on the internet. Having read his story, I felt compelled to do my part.” As PA loved rugby, Joe decided to support Trust PA by walking with his cousin Ben Sherwood 85 miles from Keynsham to OSH School via Stroud and Upton upon Severn. They set off from Keynsham Rugby Club at 6.30am on

Cousins Joe Wood (second left) and Ben Sherwood (third left) at the start of their walk from Keynsham RFC to Stourbridge Saturday August 29 and arrived in Stourbridge at 6.10pm on Monday August 31, having at that stage raised over £5,000.

n TENNIS

Autumn coaching At Saltford Lawn Tennis Club, we were delighted when lockdown eased in May and we were one of the first sports allowed to open up again. Since then, with a busy summer, we have been pleased to welcome so many new players, either through hiring the courts for £6 per hour or becoming new members with our first-year discounted membership scheme. We have just published the autumn coaching programme, which is provided by Team Bath and starts from September 28. The coaching covers minis (5-10 years), juniors (11-16) and adults (beginners and intermediate). Coaching is provided on Monday and Wednesday afternoon/ evenings and Saturday mornings. For more information and to book, see our website www. saltfordtennisclub.co.uk. In line with Covid-19 social distancing rules during the summer, we provided singles ladder competitions, arranged play sessions and also held the initial stages of our annual in-house tournament. In September we reintroduced club social play sessions on Monday mornings for ladies, and Monday/Thursday early afternoons and Tuesday/Thursday evenings for mixed play. We have also just launched a new Sunday afternoon session as well. We are open to all ages and standards, and play all year round, so if you are interested and want to try a new sport, visit our website or come down to a club session for free game and a chat.

Muskets on fire in tournament thriller

THE Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham played host to a weekend of baseball action at the finals of a national tournament. Taunton Muskets did the South West proud by claiming third place in the British Baseball Federation (BBF) single A event. After losing their semi-final to eventual champions Essex Archers 12-0, the Muskets overturned a nine-run deficit to beat Kent Buccaneers 18-17 in the play-off. The Buccaneers had earlier lost their semi-final to Brighton Jets, who were in turn beaten by Essex Archers in the final. Muskets player-manager Kevin Snow said: “We had a fantastic weekend of baseball at Somerdale Pavilion and were able to pit our skills against some of the best teams in the country. We also want to thank Bristol Baseball Club for doing such a great job in hosting the finals and making us feel so welcome.”

FTER over 18 months out of Keynsham pool due to refurbishments and then Covid-19, Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club have finally taken the plunge into their home waters again. Five of the club’s seven squads are now regularly training back in the newly refitted leisure centre. The other two squads’ training also restarted on the same date – September 7 – at Hengrove Leisure Centre pool. KASC are extremely fortunate that both pool providers have opened and that they can offer a schedule of training which is near comparable to pre-Covid. Thea Beament, Covid lead at KASC, said: “Amazing to see such happy faces getting back to

There's no place like home! During the club AGM, held over Zoom on September 16, the club captains for 2020/2021 were announced as follows: l Boys club captain - Zach Derrick l Girls club captain - Georgia Gussey l Boys vice-captain - Sam Meredith l Girls vice-captain - Evie Weymouth l Junior captains (2020-2022) - Daisy Oliver, Lilly Bowen, Elliot Meredith and Josh Thatcher the sport the children love and have missed so much. Without the fantastic teamwork from our volunteer Covid committee, getting back in the pool would not have been possible. They worked tirelessly with the pool operators following the 40-page Swim England guidance to get back swimming safely following all regulations.”

Chloe R, county squad swimmer, told us: “I absolutely love being back in the water, I have missed it so much. It was great to be able to do some land training before getting back in the water. My legs were hurting the first week but my stamina is building back up again. Keynsham is looking good with a lovely pool.” Sibling swimmers Rio, Ocean and Axel P were thrilled to return, saying: “We’re so happy to be back swimming with our swim family and friends.” Lilly B, regional squad swimmer, said: “I am really happy to be back because I really missed it, but it's taking a while for my muscles to get used to it again.
