Homes and school vision for new neighbourhood

Flats go-ahead at police station site

by Charley Rogers AN AMBITIOUS development including homes, a primary school and a new marina has been put forward to open up an ‘isolated area’ of Keynsham. The site, at Broadmead Peninsula to the north-east of the town, is currently home to various organisations. These include Broadmead Lane Industrial Estate, Wessex Water Sewage Treatment Works, DS Smith paper mill, Broadleaze Nursery, the Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park, Avon Valley Farm and the Pixash household waste site, along with several residential holdings. The proposed development has been put forward by Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES). The current plan is residentially led, to include apartments, family housing and a new primary school, centred around a new marina. The Lloyds pharmacy at Keynsham Health Centre

Dismay as health centre pharmacy set to close PEOPLE in Keynsham have reacted with “surprise and dismay” to news that the Lloyds pharmacy at Keynsham Health Centre is to shut. It is understood that the branch at the centre in St Clements Road will close on October 31. The news follows reports that the chain is proposing to close a “small number” of community pharmacies in the UK. Its parent company, McKesson UK, said the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, the impact of business rates and changes to pharmacy funding were among factors that led to the decision to close some branches “that are no longer commercially viable for us”.

B&NES councillor Alan Hale said: “The news that the pharmacy at the health centre is to close has been met with surprise and dismay by many of my constituents in Keynsham South and more broadly across the town. “I have received a significant number of emails supporting the need for a replacement, and Councillor Brian Simmons and I are working with a local independent pharmacy to hopefully ensure a replacement as soon as possible. “The pharmacy is seen as vital to many whose mobility is limited.” It is understood that the Lloyds pharmacy in Keynsham High Street will stay open.

Flats go-ahead at police station site

PLANS to demolish Keynsham’s police station to build 26 flats have been allowed on appeal. Hawkfield Homes secured permission to build nine homes after its larger scheme was rejected by Bath and North East Somerset Council members. The developer now has two options for the Bath Hill site after the decision on its original proposals was overruled. Contrary to what the council’s planning committee said, planning inspector Adrian Hunter said overlooking from the larger of the two buildings would not significantly affect neighbours, and its height would not damage the conservation area. He said the provision of 43 parking spaces, nine fewer than council policy requires, was not a significant shortage. Eight of the flats proposed would be ‘affordable’ after negotiations with the council and funding from Homes England

Concern over flats plan for police station site

Residents' parking and traffic fears

DOZENS of people have raised concerns over plans to build flats on the site of Keynsham Police Station. Residents say the proposals from Hawkfield Homes to demolish the police station on Bath Hill and replace it with 26 apartments would increase traffic and cause parking problems. The plans include 43 parking spaces, which locals say would not be enough. The police station in Bath Hill was sold last year for £1.24 million and remaining staff are due to move out soon. Abbeyfield finally reopens its doors to new residents after long wait

Caring for your rabbit Retirement charity abbits are the UK’s third most popular pet after dogs and cats, but their health and welfare needs can be more demanding than most realise. As a vet nurse, I see rabbits every day, whether they are in for a routine vaccination, neutering, or a ‘Rabbit Spa Day’ (note: some rabbits may protest this choice of name!) ‘Spa Days’ are free on the Pet Health Club and involve us clipping their nails, shaving and cleaning around their bum and applying Rearguard (flystrike protection). Flystrike involves infestation of the skin with the maggots of flies. It is a common medical condition rabbits are prone to, which can be fatal – so keep an eye on their fluffy bums! Check their underside and under the tail area daily. They are more prone to this in the warm weather, and any moisture in the area around their sensitive back and underside can attract flies. Good hygiene and clean housing are crucial to ensure our little friends are protected in these hot summer months. Another medical condition they are prone to suffering from is gut stasis, where the digestive systems slows or stops completely. Since rabbits are herbivores, they need to be constantly digesting the plant material that they eat. If your rabbit suddenly stops eating or producing faeces, contact your vet. Gut stasis in rabbits is considered a medical emergency as they are sensitive creatures and can deteriorate fast. The underlying cause could be a range of things but often dental disease is the culprit. Getting your rabbit’s teeth checked is an important part of the annual veterinary exam. Owning a rabbit is a bigger responsibility than most realise – if you would like further advice on their health and nutritional needs, please come and visit me at Park Road Vets, Monday to Wednesday. A RETIREMENT charity has officially reopened its doors to new residents after experiencing no coronavirus cases at its locations. Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham took early, preventative action and put comprehensive measures in place as protection against the pandemic. And it is relieved to report that, to date, it has remained free of Covid-19 cases at its five houses. Abbeyfield House manager Charlene Fleck said: “We always have stringent hygiene and infection control procedures in place and we significantly increased measures to reduce the risk of infection across all our houses. “We immediately introduced enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing, such as different sittings at mealtimes, or spreading residents between different rooms to eat, and insisted on at least three metres’ distance at all times. “Our staff members have been incredible and remain absolutely

committed to the health and wellbeing of our residents. We’re a strong team and I’m so very proud of everyone.” One of the hardest thing for residents was not being able to see their loved ones. “We had to limit visitors to carers, or a family member or friend acting in the capacity of carer. As a retirement organisation whose ethos centres around community, companionship and helping older people remain independent, having to ask residents to stay in the house during lockdown was also very difficult. But we had to keep them as safe and protected as possible.” Lockdown prevented Abbeyfield from bringing in its usual entertainers or keepfit people, so team members stepped up their activities to keep residents occupied. Charlene said: “The good weather helped tremendously and, as soon as we could, family and friends were able to visit in the gardens. Residents are now able to welcome visitors inside

Yet it is aware there are older people who have been isolated from their families during the pandemic and who might still be struggling to live on their own. Charlene said: “It’s concerning to think they might lack the confidence to make the move to an environment where they will be happier and more secure.

“I do appreciate families might be concerned about their loved one moving to a retirement house right now, but I want people to know that it’s completely safe to join any one of our Abbeyfield houses and that we have lots of measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety when a new person comes to live with us.” New residents are currently asked to self-isolate for 10 days in their new apartment but after that, they’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of their new Abbeyfield home.

Food bank to reopen its doors at last

AFTER not receiving visitors to its distribution centres for many months, Keynsham Food Bank is preparing to once again welcome clients. After lockdown and the closing of churches, the food bank had to reorganise its system of working. And to protect the volunteers, a delivery service was set up, thanks to the support of Keynsham and District Dial a Ride. Now, with the churches easing some of their restrictions, the food bank will again be able to welcome clients at the door of each of the three distribution centres. Food bank coordinator Alan Hale said: “This will be welcome news for our volunteers, who enjoy being able to welcome our clients, have a chat with them and where necessary provide signposting to appropriate help for any problems they might have.” The return to normal will start on Monday September 14 at the Key Centre, Victoria Methodist Church on Charlton Road at 10.30am until midday. Then on Thursday September 17, the distribution centre at St Francis Church, Warwick Road, will open at 10am until midday. The next day, Friday September 18, the distribution centre at St Mary’s Church hall

A volunteer at the food bank's Victoria Methodist Church distribution centre in High Street, Saltford, will be open from 10.15am to 11.45am. Social distancing will be used, and clients met at the door. People needing help can obtain a voucher from B&NES Council’s welfare team, their GP, Citizens Advice, social workers and many more professionals. The likelihood is that the client will be provided with a code number to bring with them to the distribution centre, while their e-voucher will be transmitted directly to the food bank. The distribution centre reopenings will

come hot on the heels of the opening of the food bank’s new 'warehouse' at Marksbury, where it will have 1,300 square feet of storage, plus the luxury of daylight and fresh air which it has not had in its recent stop-gap storage. And the food bank has been awarded £8,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund - which is supported by the government’s Coronavirus Community Support Fund – to go towards the first year’s rent at Marksbury. Alan continued: “It is a good time to offer my sincere thanks to all who have continued to support us with food donations and also cash donations to help us pay our new rent. I would also thank the Keynsham and District Dial a Ride for their much-valued partnership.” Should anyone wish to support the food bank financially, they can do so via a bank transfer to Natwest Bank 'Keynsham Food Bank' sort code 60-12-11 account 26641860. Spotlight on nuisance drivers

e get a great number of complaints about incidents relating to vehicles - from speeding, breaches of weight limits, to anti-social use. This month we have been supported by the safety camera partnership, which has been active around Keynsham. We have also been targeting nuisance motorists, which recently led to the detention of a male for disqualified driving. This leads me to thank the residents of Hurn Lane and Torridge Road who came to my aid as a male decamped from his vehicle, having failed to stop when requested and crashed into a wall. Your support lead to the prompt arrest of the offender, a disqualified driver. This month coming, we will also be looking at vehicles with issues ranging from defective lights to illegal modifications, such as tinted number plates. This offence carries a fixed penalty of £100. Your vehicles should be well maintained and legal to be able to pass an MOT, so any defects that occur should be rectified promptly.

with PC James Evans n We are preparing for the schools to fully reopen with all the rules and guidance that will need to be followed. It’s important that you prime your children that school may not be quite as it was previously. Meanwhile, I am pleased to say that the new rules about wearing face coverings when visiting shops seem to be working. It’s easy to be complacent about this guidance, but if we all do a little bit and keep up the effort, we will continue to reduce the spread and try to get back to normal, whatever that is. n We often get questioned about

the legality of the electric scooters as they seem to be getting more and more popular. The short version is that they are not legal to be used on the public highway. And the highway is from building line to building line, so this means pavements as well. The police have the power to seize these ‘vehicles’ as they do not conform and are not able to be insured for their use. What would this mean for the rider? They could be reported for offences that could affect a driver’s licence or affect them later in life if one is applied for. As in most things, common sense should be used. I have seen these ‘vehicles’ in the middle of the road and also carrying multiple passengers in dangerous circumstances. If you are seen using one of these, you can expect to be stopped and it is likely it will be seized. n We have had to stop all our beat surgeries and will be looking to reinstate these in one form or another soon. The five-storey building has been designed to reflect the same design principles of the other buildings in the development, with the brick exterior and zinc-faced aluminium finish of the original Fry’s factory building.

In a previously hard landscaped space, the project will also see the creation of a communal outdoor area for the whole community to enjoy. It will feature a covered garden space with two seating areas and entrances linking to Block D and the Pavilion. This space will tie together the existing green spaces at the Chocolate Quarter, reflecting the same landscape design. Rachel Baker, director of marketing and communications at St Monica Trust, said: “Since opening in 2018, we’ve been honoured to be a part of the Somerdale and wider Keynsham community. This is the last piece of the puzzle and includes the creation of an inspirational green space.

“Creating spaces that the whole community can enjoy is at the heart of what we do and we’re encouraging all of our neighbours to take part in our community consultation and submit their comments so that we can ensure we’re creating the best space possible.” The development plans can be viewed at www.block-d-keynsham.org.uk/ and residents and neighbours are asked to participate in a community consultation by submitting their comments for consideration. More information on the Chocolate Quarter can be found at https:// thechocolatequarter.org.uk/ or by following @TheChocolateQuarter on Facebook.

A Memories by Moonlight ceremony will be broadcast live on Facebook from CHSW’s Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell at 9pm on Saturday September 26, giving people the opportunity to light a candle and join together virtually for a special evening of reflection. The poignant and uplifting ceremony will feature readings from all three of the charity’s children’s hospices – Charlton Farm near Bristol, Little Harbour, and Little Bridge House near Barnstaple. It will include music, poems and a two-minute applause to celebrate loved ones whose names will appear on the screen.

Kiley Pearce, events fundraiser for CHSW, said: “Due to the pandemic, the charity has had to adapt many things over the last few months – the care and support we offer to children as well as the fundraising events that help to fund that vital support for more than 500 local families. “We hope our new Memories by Moonlight event will give people a lovely way to support the work we do while remembering their loved ones.” Everyone who registers to take part in the event, which is being sponsored by National Friendly, will get the chance to join the virtual memory ceremony. People can then choose to simply donate in memory of their loved one or complete a walk or activity that reminds them of their loved one and ask friends and family to make a donation towards this.

KEYNSHAM Wombles are looking forward to their first Big Womble since before lockdown. People are being asked to choose a small area to tidy up on Saturday September 19, from 10am to 12 noon. Once their tasks have been completed, participants are invited to refreshments hosted by Keynsham Wombles founder Erica Davies. Tea and cake will be available in Erica’s garage at 54 Albert Road. She also has a large drive, which will allow guests to maintain social distancing. People planning to take part are asked to email Erica at womble@ transitionkeynsham.org so she has an idea which spaces are being tidied and how many guests to expect afterwards. The Wombles have also issued this poster designed by a member to highlight how much PPE (personal protective equipment) is being discarded as litter.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Fruit and veg harvest for the community

T

here has been a huge increase in the number of people growing vegetables during the Covid-19 pandemic. For some, it’s because lockdown has given them time. Others are driven by a fear that commercial food systems are vulnerable to shocks, as we saw with the panic buying in March. People applied for allotments, started community gardens and dug up patches in their own back yards. The surge in veg growing was so strong that it became nighon impossible to buy seeds, with suppliers running out of staples like tomato, courgette and beans. I even ended up sending old seeds to friends north of Edinburgh! But as lockdown has eased – for now – and the fruit (no pun intended) of our efforts is ready to harvest, what should we do with our surplus produce? Transition Bath has a great answer to that question. With

support from B&NES Council, it has set up a surplus crops project that re-distributes gluts of fruit and veg from people’s allotments and gardens and passes it on to organisations that support households struggling to afford fresh food. Transition Keynsham, which has a community garden – the plot in the park – supports the project. The surplus crops project has only been running for a few weeks,

but it has already distributed over 300kg of fresh produce. Volunteers have stepped in to pick up and drop off the veg, and a number of allotments and community gardens are donating their surpluses. In Keynsham, the project organisers are talking to the Park Road Allotments about supplying surplus crops, and also to the Community Fridge project, which hopes to be able to take the

produce when the fridge reopens in the autumn. I believe there’s an appetite for doing things differently as our society responds to Covid-19 and its after-effects. We’ve shown how communities can come together to support each other in a crisis, and how a ‘green’ economic recovery can be good for people and the planet. Redistributing locally grown, fresh and healthy fruit and veg is a wonderful example of what the ‘new normal’ can look like. If you’d like to donate veg, volunteer with the project or know of an organisation that could make use of the produce, please contact the co-ordinators on transition. surpluscrops@gmail.com For more information about the project (and a map of suppliers and receivers of surplus crops) visit http://transitionbath.org/surpluscrops-people-needing-nutritiousfresh-local-food/ LIZ BARLING

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Perils of the road for 1930s commuter

T

oday, most of us think nothing of travelling by car. We switch on the engine – or electric motor – and then forget about it until we arrive at our destination. Indeed, parking is often a bigger problem than the journey itself. Things used to be very different; this is an abridged version of an account written by longtime Keynsham resident the late Jim Allen of his memories of commuting in the 1930s, when he lived in Upton Cheyney. “When I joined my brother in working in Bristol in January 1936, we bought an Austin 7 for £100, hoping to solve our travel problems. Of course, we didn’t! In cold weather, there was no anti-freeze, so the radiator had to be drained every night and refilled with luke-warm water in the morning. If less cold, a paraffin lamp hung under the radiator sufficed. After cranking the engine to life and letting it warm up, choke out, it was time to start the ten-mile journey to Temple Gate. An early start was essential. If we left Upton at 8am we had a clear run through Bitton and Keynsham and along the A4. If we left at five past, we trailed along the Willsbridge to Keynsham road behind Farmer Clapp's cows, who, after milking, made a leisurely progress, undriven, unattended, to their allotted field, spattering the tarmac with

A restored Austin Ruby Saloon, similar to Jim Allen’s in the 1930s Photo by Steve Glover "detrimental to coachwork" deposits. Horses also posed problems, casting shoes and nails which led to punctures. There was a lot of horse-drawn traffic around Temple Meads. In December 1937 we traded up to an Austin Big 7, list price £149-10s. This, named a Ruby Saloon, was a glorified Austin 7, with sliding roof, hinged windscreen for ventilation, trafficators (to save giving hand signals), a self-starter if the battery was charged and a dropdown luggage carrier. Speeds were restricted through the gears and 30 mph was the maximum for top gear.

On our first trip the dash lamp bulb burnt out. At 500 miles, it needed an oil change, at 900 miles the gearbox and back axle oil was changed, while greasing the ten nipples was a weekly necessity. Adcoids were a recommended additive to petrol (to reduce wear) at that time, a tablet for every two gallons. At mileage 2,350, the engine was decarbonised (cost £1-10s), the first of many decokes in its lifetime. The car was in daily use in the pre-war years. Regular hazards included floods, icy roads and fogs. There were no white lines, no cat's eyes, and headlights reflecting off the fog dazzled the driver. From Keynsham to Bitton, where the fogs were often worst, I would walk by the grass verge where my brother could see me and we would creep along in bottom gear, often leading a procession of other cars and lorries. A big hazard in Bristol were the tram lines in which wheels could become trapped, while the trams themselves were a menace as they swung and lurched out of Brislington depot – they had priority over other road users. I have no records of the car insurance but, in 1938, the annual Road Tax was 15s per horse power, petrol was 1s 6p [7½p] a gallon, while the average wage for men was £2 a week and parking in Bristol was free! ” Richard Dyson

Sugar-free celebration for dental practice

IT’S been a year since Keynsham Dental Care opened the doors of its new ground-floor surgery and reception space on the High Street. And what a year it’s been. The coronavirus pandemic meant the practice was forced to close in early March. Although treatments stopped, the staff continued working hard behind the scenes until the government gave the green light for dental practices to reopen in early June. Principal dentist Dr Dave Stone said: “It’s been an incredible 12 months and we’d like to say a huge thank-you to all our patients. We’ve been on the High Street for over 50 years and this year has been a truly unusual one. “We’re really proud to be a big part of this Keynsham community, which has pulled together and worked hard to support local residents during these difficult times.” To celebrate the milestone, the team enjoyed a specially designed, sugar-free cake in the shape of the surgery’s logo. It was created by Crumbs of Keynsham, which is based across the road from the surgery. Another local business, Conscience Foods & Lifestyle, advised on ingredients for the celebratory treat.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We must not waste the sacrifices of the last six months OVER the summer months we’ve seen plans to ease restrictions come and go, local lockdowns enforced in some parts of the country and changes to guidance for those travelling abroad. I’m sure, like me, many of you welcomed the return of restaurants, hairdressers and gyms. However, we’ve also seen some of these establishments close again, due to positive coronavirus cases. This is a stark reminder that we must continue to be cautious, act with common sense and ensure that the sacrifices of the last six months do not go to waste. As the regulations continue to change, so does the police response, and business as usual has certainly returned for officers. Avon and Somerset Police continue to face multiple complex crimes and make difficult decisions to keep local people safe. Although they should be commended for their hard work, unfortunately, our emergency workers also face threat of physical or verbal abuse. This is not

acceptable. During the height of the global pandemic we were all celebrating our emergency workers for their hard work, so let’s not forget their efforts as we emerge into our new normal. One of the crimes that officers continue to face is cybercrime and fraud. Unfortunately criminals have exploited recent changes to the TV licence requirement for over 75s and used it to target vulnerable users with a text message scam. The National Cyber Security Centre has told police that victims are asked to enter various pieces of personal information, including their name, date of birth, home address and banking details, which are then stolen. During the global health pandemic, officers have seen an increase in cybercrime reports so it is more important than ever that we all remain vigilant. To keep yourself safe from fraud, take a moment to think before parting with your money or information, challenge any sus-

picious demands and be sure to take some time to check any requests for money or information. Always remember: the police, or your bank, will never ask you to withdraw money, transfer it to a different account or reveal your full banking password or PIN. If you have been a victim, please report it to Action Fraud: www. actionfraud.police.uk. In my regular catch-ups with the chief constable we regularly discuss concerns around speeding and anti-social driving, which continues to blight our communities. Avon and Somerset Police has a dedicated unit of 55 roads policing officers supporting our neighbourhood teams and, as part of their role, they gather evidence and collate information from local people to identify and target drivers who present the greatest harm to our communities. If you witness any road-related incidents, please do report to the police by calling 101 or reporting online. Reporting your concerns provides the police with

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens a wider picture of information that allows them to target repeat offenders or people who present a significant risk to our communities. I look forward to meeting you all again soon. In the meantime, remember we are still here for you and we are all working hard to ensure you are safe and feel safe.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

I

n an article written for the Mail on Sunday, the Prime Minister put forward his case for sending children back to school full-time from September. In his piece, Boris Johnson argued that it was 'economically unsustainable and morally indefensible' to keep children at home. And whilst he acknowledged that the pandemic is not finished and children's safety remains paramount there is, according to a leading child health expert, little evidence to suggest that going back to school would affect the statistics detrimentally because the virus has not been transmitted in schools. He added that if there were another spike, pubs and shops would close before schools, giving extra weight to the Government's firm, sensible position. The Premier's stance has been welcomed by regional leaders, including the Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, who, in spite of seeing this area badly affected by coronavirus, supports the practicality of this

n LETTER policy, having cited the mental and educational wellbeing of children and young people as being a priority. Boris Johnson went further: “The less children are in school, the worse it is for their health. Most painfully of all, the costs of school closure have fallen disproportionately on the most disadvantaged, the very children who need school the most. I agree with the Prime Minister that children must return to school next month, not only for their welfare but also to relieve pressure on parents who need to go back to work. The 'new normal' is about adaptation - living with this virus until a vaccination or cure has been found, and even then we are guaranteed no certainty. We cannot put our or, crucially, our children's lives on hold but can continue to move forward cautiously with optimism that things will start to improve soon. l Please do not hesitate to contact me: jacob.reesmogg.mp@parliament. uk/www.jacobreesmogg.com

High Street closure is a disaster AS a driver and Blue Badge holder, I find closing off the High Street totally unnecessary. It is making Ashton Way more congested, with getting out of the car park becoming more difficult with the increase of traffic. As regards to social distancing, people are still walking on the pavements, as one should, so what happens when they get into the shops, I ask? The whole thing will turn people away from Keynsham - me for one. Why not make cyclists go round as well as the traffic if you are trying to make it safer? In my opinion, the whole thing is a total disaster Mr D Woodham

MEET THE TEACHER

Message from Louise Hamilton, Headteacher at Broadlands Academy

As the new Headteacher at Broadlands Academy, I can’t wait to welcome our students back to school after the long period of lockdown. Although it’s been 21 years since I qualified as a teacher, I still feel that teaching is the best job in the world, and am very excited about that moment when our students walk through the school gates, filling the air with the bustle and laughter that staff have missed so much! Although lockdown has been an unusual time to start as Headteacher, I have used this period to plan for the next exciting stage of Broadlands’ development; I look forward to sharing our ideas with many of you at our Open Events this Autumn. As a parent myself, I fully understand the magnitude of the decision about which secondary school is right for your child. If you do choose Broadlands, your child will spend their years with us being supported and challenged both academically and socially. We have a highly capable and committed leadership team, a talented and caring staff, and an ambitious curriculum that will enrich your child and enable them to fulfil their goals and dreams; we are also privileged to have the

‘small school feel’ that helps our young people have a sense of belonging. A further benefit of Broadlands is that the school is part of the wider Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) family of schools, which means that we have access to some of the best educational expertise in the country! Over the past few months, our children have benefited hugely from the vast range of online resources provided by AET, as well as from our staff’s willingness to go the extra mile. I very much hope to be able to meet many of you in person at our Open Evening, which will take place on Tuesday 29th September from 6-8pm; we will also be offering Open Morning tours from 9-11am on Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th October. Please check our website from 7th September for more information about how these events will operate in a safe and socially distanced manner.

A very warm welcome... We are really looking forward to welcoming our new Reception pupils in September. As a new school we are excited to be at the beginning of on a new journey with our new families and children. Annie Smart, Executive Headteacher

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Without intimacy we are depleted. I meet Mike Burke people who live on their own and speak Missioner and Team Vicar about how they long for human touch Keynsham – we all need a hug some time. Parish

I

recently asked people at our congregation what they had missed the most during the Covid restrictions. The answers were all about contact with other people - meeting together, singing, hugging their children or grandchildren. The privations of this present age have been disastrous to our physical, social, mental and economic wellbeing, yet for many people this is expressed in very human terms arising from our lack of contact and connection. If there is a theme that runs through such responses it is about struggling with a lack of intimacy. Intimacy is what makes us human – it is our ability to connect with each other emotionally and spiritually – it is about proximity, togetherness, participation, feeling a connection with something beyond ourselves. Look at competitive sport. It just isn’t the same without the participation of a partisan crowd. Entertainment is sterile without an audience, popular music hollow without a sweaty mosh pit, education soulless when

children learn remotely rather than as part of a learning community. Even casual relationships suffer when we cannot shake hands, embrace, high five, hug, touch or even stand close to each other. Without intimacy we are depleted. I meet people who live on their own and speak about how they long for human touch – we all need a hug some time. One aspect of the loss of intimacy is the withdrawing of public singing. Singing is central to our experience of intimacy with God and each other as we worship. It is singing that unites a football crowd, singing that lifts the spirits of those who are part of a choir, singing that unites the festival crowd as they join in with a well-known song. There may be sound scientific reasons for limiting mass participation singing during a global pandemic, but at an emotional and spiritual level it robs us of the ability to express something about who we are and how we express that identity as part of a group.

So, how do we survive in a world in which expressions of human intimacy and connection are impaired? First of all, we need to admit that given the limitations we are living under, then we will all feel a bit rubbish at times. Jesus once met with a woman who was regarded as ritually unclean and who was denied the intimacy of human touch. His words to her were ‘Do not be afraid.’ Likewise, Jesus touched the untouchables, like those with leprosy and healed them. He didn’t have to touch in order to heal, but He often chose to touch – His touch conveyed life – recognising that human touch is central to being fully human. As we eventually emerge from the lockdown, let us remember how much those connections and that intimacy mattered to us, how they bound us to other people and made us feel truly human and alive. Even in our new socially distant reality, let’s not forget the importance of human touch.

fter Scout Troops resumed their adventures in the great outdoors at the end of July, Beavers and Cubs headed out to our Chelwood campsite for their long-awaited return. Fun challenges included an A–Z scavenger hunt and bivvy building, as well as campfires for songs and toasted marshmallows. Their smiling faces showed just how happy they were to be outdoors again. As temperatures soared in the heatwave, it was clearly time for a favourite Beaver activity: (Water) Fight Night. Rocky Beavers came armed with water pistols, and a huge slip and slide was set up for extra fun. It definitely proved popular, with Charlie saying: “The water games were amazing!”. Friends have clearly been missed too, as Lucas said: “Seeing all my friends at Beavers again has been brilliant!” And Jacob added: “I’ve really missed Beavers and love being back”. As Beaver Scouts is the youngest

section, we hope these activities inspire a love of Scouting that lasts a lifetime. As with any organisation, Scouting can only return if we put in measures to make it safe, including social distancing and encouraging frequent hand-sanitising. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank SW Sanitisers for their support in providing these measures during these unusual times. George Davies-Coward, head of sales, said: “In March we were faced with an empty events calendar and we knew we had to diversify to survive. This led us to work with different organisations such as the Scout movement which were faced with the daunting process of trying to reopen their doors. We’re happy to put our knowledge to good use and advise what was needed to make things safe.” Scouting has always relied on the support of the community, and we wouldn’t be able to get young people out Scouting again without the help of local businesses and all of our brilliant volunteers, so thank you.

psychology at the University of Southampton. Students who have made exceptional progress at SBL’s post-16 centre include Samadi Peiris, Luci Bailey, Molly Skates and Lisa Wingrove. Overall, results at SBL have increased significantly in comparison with 2019, with the average grade up by almost a whole grade. IKB Academy in Keynsham, the trust’s specialist science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) centre, has seen excellent results in STEM subjects for a fourth successive year. Among notable successes are Jasmine Neal-Long, who will pursue her ambition to study civil engineering at Bath University after achieving A* in maths, A in chemistry and Bs in physics and further maths, and

Amelia Nicholas, who has been offered a design engineering apprenticeship after gaining a distinction*/distinction in her Btec Level 3 engineering course and a B in A-level product design. Harry Richards secured the grades in Btec Level 3 engineering and product design that will enable him to go on to study architecture at London Metropolitan University. Other students at the small sixth form are also off to university to follow a range of STEM subjects or are taking up apprenticeships. The final set of results at The Bath Studio School, a specialist centre for creative and digital subjects, saw some exceptional outcomes. Caleb Cuozzo got a distinction* and distinction in digital media, A* in graphics

YEAR 11 students in Wellsway Multi Academy Trust schools are celebrating some excellent GCSE results despite the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown. Young people at Wellsway School and IKB Academy in Keynsham - as well as Sir Bernard Lovell Academy, Bedminster Down School and The Bath Studio School - have worked hard over five years to achieve grades that will set them on the path to their future. The trust’s director of education, Gary Schlick, said: “We are delighted that, after such a challenging few months, our students have earned grades in line with what we had predicted for them at the start of the year. We are so pleased that the majority of students have chosen to continue their studies in our sixth form.” A number of students at Wellsway School earned high grades across the board. They include Henry Williams: nine grade 9s and an 8; Rebekah Bolton and Ffion Bright: both eight 9s and two 8s; Izma Hussain: eight 9s, one 8

GCSE triumph despite Covid and one 7; Oscar Lopez-Cottrell: six 9s and four 8s; Emma Pearce: seven 9s, two 8s, one 7; Mykenzie Evans and Joseph Snarr: six 9s, three 8s, one 7; Melanie Harber and Holly Jones: both five 9s, four 8s and one 7. Principal Matthew Woodville said: “We are immensely proud of the achievements of all our students and we look forward to welcoming a record number back to the sixth form in September.” IKB Academy, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), has seen some excellent GCSE results in those subjects, as it did for A-levels. This year, more than 20 per cent of all grades in STEM subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, maths, computing and product design)

and A in photography. He will do freelance graphic design work during a gap year before university. Evie Cameron gained two distinctions and a distinction* in digital media and TV and film and an A* in graphics A-level, and will go to London Fashion Retail Academy to study fashion. Gabriel Spreckelsen-Brown achieved two distinction* and a distinction in his suite of creative media subjects. Gabriel also undertook additional A-Levels in maths and English, achieving Bs in both. Madeleine SpreckelsenBrown achieved two A*s and a B in fine art, graphics and photography. Gabriel and Madeleine will be moving to Edinburgh with their family to attend university. The trust’s director of education, Gary Schlick, said: “We are extremely proud of the way Year 13 students at all our schools have coped with the extraordinary circumstances of recent months. “Despite the national uncertainty in the process of determining and awarding A-level and equivalent grades this year, we are delighted with the students’ results and pleased that almost all have been awarded grades that have enabled them to successfully progress to the next stage of their chosen route in education, training or employment.”

were at a grade 7 or above. Among the high achievers was Renee Weber, who earned three grade 9s, five 8s and one 7, and has secured a scholarship to Taunton College, where she will study the International Baccalaureate. Maya Hargreaves achieved five 9s, one 8 and two 6s, while Aryna Ali achieved 9s in maths, product design and chemistry, with 8s in all other subjects. Niamh Murphy achieved one 9, six 8s and one 7 to add to the 9 she achieved last year when she sat GCSE English a year early. Another notable success was John Augustin, who joined IKB part way through Year 10 after moving to the UK from Spain and gained a clutch of high grades. Principal Danny Wilkinson said: “We are delighted with our students’ GCSE performance. Many of them will continue their successful academic journey with IKB into the sixth form, studying a range of facilitating A-level subjects and vocational qualifications, creating our largest Year 12 cohort to date.”

n EXAM RESULTS

A-level cheer for sixth-form college

STUDENTS at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are looking to the future after receiving their A-Level results. The college in Brislington has the largest cohort of A-level students in the region, with 760 being notified of their grades. After an interrupted year of education due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students had all exams cancelled and have been awarded grades based on their teachers’ assessment. These have been moderated at national level by the awarding bodies supervised by Ofqual. Most of the students are progressing to their chosen destinations despite these challenges. So far, more than 400 who applied through UCAS have secured their university courses. They include three students who will study medicine and another three who have

accepted Oxbridge offers. A total of 20% of those who have applied to university will go to Russell Group institutions. Four students who took part in the Bristol Scholars Programme have achieved places at Bristol University. Popular degree choices for the class of 2020 are law, criminology, psychology, business and health-related subjects. A total of 15% of students have secured apprenticeships in fields including accounting, law, business and engineering, gaining employment with companies including Airbus, BT and Atkins. Marian Curran, principal at St Brendan’s, said: “Congratulations to all our students receiving results, after experiencing an exceptional situation.”

Youth club launch by Charley Rogers

SALTFORD Community Association (SCA) is launching a new youth club. The new club will run every Sunday at Saltford Hall, starting on September 6, and will initially be limited to 16 attendees, due to coronavirus restrictions. Attendance will cost £1 per day and places must be booked in advance via https:// www.tickettailor.com/events/ scaevents Chris Essex, treasurer at SCA, said: “James Woodman, who runs a youth club in Henleaze, contacted us just before lockdown about setting up a club in Saltford. “We were delighted to hear from James because, in conjunction with the parish council, we have been looking for a way to set up a youth club for the past couple of years. “Aside from the traditional Brownies, Guides, and Scouts groups, there’s not much for youngsters to do in the village,

so we’re excited about this new youth club.” Saltford Parish Council is supporting the project with a grant of £460 to help cover the costs of room hire at Saltford Hall for the first three months. The SCA has also earmarked a further £500 for resources, but it is asking the local community to donate unwanted items before new ones are bought, to reduce waste and costs. Chris said: “We’ve had loads of donations already, including Xboxes, PS4s and so on. We’re still in need of a couple of tablets though.” The youth club will run from 12pm-2pm every Sunday for children in school years 6 to 9, apart from once per month, when it will run from 9.30am11.30am. Anyone with items to donate can email event@ saltfordhall.co.uk and more information about the youth club is available on the SCA’s Facebook page at https://www. facebook.com/SCACOMM/

n BACK TO NATURE

Six hedgehogs in the garden of Barry and Marcia Lock in Unity Road

These hedgehogs are visitors to Samantha Ball's home behind Tesco

Hedgehogs find a welcoming home

D

uring August, following our request for wildlife photos from your gardens and walks, we were fortunate to have two photos shared with us showing how hedgehogs, although endangered, have found good homes around Keynsham. The first photo shows a remote trigger camera image from the garden of Barry and Marcia Lock in Unity Road - an amazing array of six hedgehogs of different sizes. And on posting their photo on Facebook, we were also sent a photo from Samantha Ball, who is also feeding hedgehogs at her home behind Tesco. It’s such a privilege to have the UK’s favourite animal visiting. The plight of the hedgehog is uncertain, with 95% of the UK species having been lost in the last 50 years, and it has officially been put on the conservation Red List as ‘vulnerable to extinction’. Its natural environment is heavily under threat as development and farming practices remove their preferred hedge habitat, so they now rely on our gardens for refuge. So it is important that we look after the ones that remain. Hedgehogs can travel 2-3 km a night and need connectivity, so being able to pass from one garden to another is essential. Of course, they are looking for food, and lots of our vegetable pests, such as slugs and snails, are on the menu, so they are the gardener’s friend. However an extra boost, if you are lucky enough to have a hedgehog or two visiting your garden, won’t go amiss particularly at this time of year

Specialised hedgehog food is also available. NEVER put out bread and milk, as hedgehogs can’t digest these. The People’s Trust for Endangered Species’ initiative “Hedgehog Street” encourages people to talk to their neighbours about creating hedgehog highways. And there’s a lot of information on their website to inspire you to do more: www. hedgehogstreet.org Hugh Warwick, well-known hedgehog campaigner, has written a new book being released this month called The Hedgehog Book, which promises to be a good read for anyone interested. And he has a long-running petition to

of every month, with a varied selection of topics. Our first talk is on October 9, Mud, Sweat and Tears - Tales from a Wildlife TV Producer, with Paul Williams from the BBC Natural History Unit. Each month we are also hosting a series of “social walks” - an opportunity to get together with local members, while socially distancing according to guidelines. As numbers on these walks are very limited, early booking is essential. During September we have our annual river dipping in the River Chew with our chair, Dave Sage, and have also introduced two sessions of pond dipping at Wellsway School especially for younger children. These events will need to be pre-booked due to the limited numbers we are able to accommodate (see below). Booking on Eventbrite will be essential for all our talks and walks and you can find the details of this and our program on our website www.keynshamawt.org To be one of the first to find out when booking opens for each event, please subscribe to our monthly enews on our website. Or check out our Facebook page @KeynshamAvonWT For any further information, please contact us by email keynshamawt@gmail.com or phone Kathy on 07850 508702. present day there is a real feeling of danger to Viv and her friends. Thoroughly enjoyable. Adult Non-Fiction

To Catch a King:

Charles II’s Great Escape Charles Spencer reviewed by Kerri Brian, Keynsham Library Assistant

Barbara Erskine is an incredibly popular author and I fell upon this book while venturing into Bath when lockdown was easing. This story is about two women whose histories blur into each other across the centuries. First we meet Cartimandu (a real-life Celtic queen mentioned in Roman writings of the time) and learn about her early life in the Brigantes tribe. Then the story switches to the present day and Dr Viv Lloyd Rees, an academic who is writing a book about Cartimandu. She is suddenly plagued by visions of Cartimandu, which only get worse as she finds an ancient brooch that probably carries a curse. The story moves between the two time frames very easily, and soon Viv’s visions begin to make her feel she may be losing her mind or is genuinely seeing the true story of Cartimandu as she deals with loss, love, revenge and finally the invasion of Britain by the Romans. Celtic Britain is described in very atmospheric detail, and in the

While on a walk in Keynsham recently, I came across what appeared to be a random signpost in the middle of countryside. It was marked “Monarch’s Way”. Intrigued, I researched online and at no point was I ever made aware of King Charles II passing through the area, escaping capture and execution. Determined to learn more, I downloaded this book from Cloud library, although it is also available to reserve in book form via the Libraries West catalogue: This well-researched book gives a glimpse into the extraordinary escape of Charles II in 1651 after a failed attempt to take back the throne. His father, King Charles I, was executed in 1649 by Parliamentarians who, supported

by Cromwell’s New Model Army, had made Britain a republic. It gives an insight into how he raised an army of around 16,000, made up of men from Scotland and many Royalists in the North, and the failed battle against a 28,000-strong army led by Oliver Cromwell at Worcester. This was the last of the Civil Wars, and the treatment of captured supporters in the aftermath was terrible. What happens next reads almost like an adventure novel, using historical records including parts taken from Samuel Pepys’ diary, accounts regaled to him by the king himself. It describes how he found help from brave Royalist supporters, who hid him in and around their homes, sometimes using secret ‘priest holes’ and using disguises – and then helped him to reach the south coast, where he took a boat back to the safety of France. The story of the king who hid in an oak tree at Boscobel House was that of King Charles II, and it’s the reason for many pubs being called the Royal Oak. Curiosity piqued, I have since found some fiction titles that give an insight into the Civil War and the effect on everyday people of the time. If only my school history lessons had linked to the local area, I would have sat up and listened more. Children's Fiction

The Ice Monster David Walliams Guided by the pen of popular children’s author David Walliams, we delve into the world of Victorian England. It is 1899 and we meet Elise, who has resided in Wormly Hall, for unwanted children, for 10 years.

She decides, at great risk, to leave Wormly Hall and be free of the awful Mrs Curdle. She then becomes an ‘urchin’ of old London town, meeting a young gang of street thieves, a formidable aristocratic big-game hunter - and finally the Ice Monster. Read on and follow the adventures of Elise and Wolley! Illustrated by Tony Ross, this is a delightful story about heroes who do indeed come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

huge thank-you to all the volunteers from Keynsham In Bloom who have been working in numerous locations in and around the town to make Keynsham look beautiful. Our High Street hanging baskets have been kept looking stunning, with the support of Mark Hacker and his team (our local window cleaners), who have tirelessly watered and fed them during the hots days this summer. Our troughs on the High Street, Temple Street, Queens Road, Longmeadow Drive and Chandag Road have been looking their best. These will soon be planted up with winter planting. Special thanks go to our volunteers who have been caring for the gardens and troughs at the railway station. It is great to be able to offer commuters and visitors a welcoming floral display. Thanks also to our secret watering residents! The crown in memory of Liz Fox has just been planted up with winter pansies and work has begun on the Pocket Park in memory of Dee James. This park is soon to be transformed with a special bench, planters, a picnic bench, bird and bat boxes, and bug hotel, and we are seeking quotes for

additional ramps to make this area fully accessible. In Bloom are seeking a volunteer litter picker for the Pocket Park (at the top of Avon Road). All we ask is that you call at the park occasionally and pick up any litter. All equipment will be provided. If interested, contact us (details below). Finally, In Bloom are always looking for new green-fingered volunteers. If you are interested, email us at Keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or drop a note with your contact details on through the letter box of Keynsham Town Council (on Temple Street). Please help us to tackle food waste by Charley Rogers KEYNSHAM Community Fridge is once again tackling food waste in the town. Originally set up in March of this year, the project soon had to take a break due to Covid-19 guidelines. However, now that restrictions are easing, the fridge is back and looking for volunteers. The community fridge is hoping to reopen this autumn at Temple Street Canteen, but things will be a little different than usual, in keeping with existing Covid-19 guidelines. Mike Burke, one of the organisers of Keynsham Community Fridge, said: “The fridge will now be located downstairs at Temple Street Canteen, rather than upstairs, and we will have volunteers supervising food pick-ups. “These changes have been made in order to minimise the amount of cleaning that will need to be done on the fridge, and to keep it Covid safe. This is one of the reasons we are in need of more volunteers, plus the fact that many of our existing volunteers are currently unable to help out due to Covid shielding restrictions.” The project will also be partnering with FareShare, which has been delivering surplus food to homes throughout lockdown. FareShare will continue its work in collecting

surplus from supermarkets and other businesses, and will deliver it to Keynsham Community Fridge, where individuals can pick it up. The community fridge is hoping to run from Monday-Saturday 10am-12pm, pending risk assessments. Around 10 million tonnes of food waste are produced in the UK every year, and an estimated 60% could be avoided, say the project’s organisers. There are 37 community fridges around the UK, with businesses and individuals donating unwanted fresh food at the end of each day, which can then be used by anyone in the community. “Our intention is an environmental concern to reduce the amount of food that would otherwise be wasted,” said Mike. “We’re also aware that food poverty is a growing issue, even in a community like Keynsham, which is why we’re keen to start up again as soon as possible.” Are you interested in volunteering for Keynsham Community Fridge? Superheroes thank hospital's carers

A SUPERHERO walk from Keynsham to Bath has raised money for the neonatal intensive care unit at the Royal United Hospital. Spiderman, Batman and Supergirl completed the walk in costume, carrying a collection tin so passers-by could contribute. Batman – aka Lee Fellows – explained: “My nephew spent two weeks in the NICU unit after he was born prematurely. The care he received and the understanding my brother and his wife had was incredible, and we’re excited to be able to give it a little back. “The walk went brilliantly! At the time of writing, our justgiving fundraiser surpassed our target and is currently at £110, despite the weather working against us. We also managed to get a fair amount of cash donations during the walk.” l Lee’s nephew Breason is pictured above while in the intensive care unit and, right, with his family and superhero supporters.

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Talented swimmers thrilled to be picked

T

wo of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club’s top performance swimmers have been selected for the Swim England National Development Programme learning and engagement day. Jess L and Isobel N, who train with City of Bristol Aquatics (CoB), are among 430 swimmers chosen for the event. The National Development Programme is the third step on the Swim England Extended Talent Pathway, but the first on the national framework. All the swimmers were chosen using the new adjusted selection guidelines introduced for the 2020-21 season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 13 and 14-year-olds picked are expected to join a day of online workshops in October, covering ‘Loving Race Day’, sleep recovery and injury prevention. A dry land conditioning session will also emphasise mobility and stability to enhance the anti-rotational/ rotational strokes and streamlining. Jess said: “I am really happy to be selected for the National Development Programme, as it gives me a little more hope that I can be just as good once I go back to swimming next season. “Lockdown has been hard but one thing that has kept me going is the idea of being back in the water racing and with my friends.” There’s also great news for another of our CoB performance swimmers, Georgia G, who has been accepted to the Swim England DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) program. It’s a two-year course aimed at talented swimmers, para swimmers, divers, water polo players and synchronised swimmers going into year 12-13. It helps athletes of a high level understand their sport in more depth. Within the course, athletes learn about technical and tactical skills, physical capability, nutrition, psychology, lifestyle, career, communication, health and safety, plus culture, values and behaviour. The programme is delivered across the country through faceto-face regional workshops, online learning, progress review visits and an offshore training camp or competition. “I was selected for this program as a result of being within the top six in the country in my main events, which are 100m and

Georgia G says lockdown has taught her to keep striving for her goals

Laura B has been cycling to keep up her fitness while out of the pool 200m breaststroke and the 200m and 400m IM (individual medley),” explained Georgia. We asked Georgia how things have been for her during the pandemic. “Throughout lockdown, I had weeks where I was very motivated to train and others where I was less motivated, having had all my national competitions cancelled due to Covid-19 and therefore nothing to focus on. “The training schedule City of Bristol provided me with has been amazing. We were sent aerobic capacity sessions, daily land training over Zoom and flexibility sessions once a week to ensure we are in the best possible shape when we get back into the water. I am now back in the pool and

couldn’t be happier. Lockdown has definitely taught me to trust the process and to keep striving for my goals.” And lastly, Sophie W and Laura B, two of Keynsham’s youngest competitors, have been selected to remotely attend the 2020 Somerset ASA County Pathway workshops. This is part of a national programme overseen by Swim England for talented swimmers. Richard, Laura’s father, said: “Following her great performance earlier in the year, Laura was selected for the county development pathway. Undeterred by lockdown, Laura has been keeping up her fitness cycling around the local area.” Laura said: “I’m really excited

Jess L hopes to be in top form when she returns to swimming with this brilliant opportunity and would like to thank all the coaches and friends in KASC. I really miss you all and can’t wait to get back in the pool.” At the time of writing, KASC have still not had a chance to get their toes wet, as Hengrove Leisure Centre pool was unable to open in August as anticipated and has given KASC provisional dates for a September reopening. The newly refurbished Keynsham Leisure Centre pool is still expected to open in early September. If your child aged 7 and over is a competent swimmer and would be interested in joining Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club, you can contact thea.beament@ keynshamswimming.club to register your interest, or alternately, enquire via the club’s Facebook page.

n SALTFORD FC UNDER-9s

We're so glad to be back in training! AFTER months of being unable to play or train together, Saltford Football Club’s under-9s team have finally returned to training - and they can’t wait to get the new season started. They were left disappointed when their first competitive season ended prematurely back in March. Hard work from the players and coaches had meant they were growing in confidence and achieving some great wins as the season came to a sudden halt. During lockdown, the team supported each other and kept their spirits up by continuing their training at home. They’ve enjoyed carrying out football drills and had fun making their own video for the toilet roll challenge. The #stayathomechallenge was made popular online by some of the top clubs’ players during the early days of lockdown, and the Saltford under-9s enjoyed taking part in their own version of the challenge. However, this of course didn’t compare to being together and playing as a team. Fortunately, in mid July, it was announced that the phased return of outdoor competitive grassroots football could go ahead, while adhering to guidelines. The team, led by Warren Lewis, assisted by Derek McLauchlan and Chris Warren, are now back on the pitch and getting ready for the season ahead. Head coach Warren is delighted to finally get the team together for training in preparation for the new season. “I’ve really missed working with this great group of children, and I can’t wait to build on what we started last season.” Assistant coach Derek is also

pleased to be back. “I’m really looking forward to helping coach this brilliant team of kids again for the coming season. It’s a fun, friendly and relaxed set-up, promoting a good team spirit and enjoyment of football.”

Saltford FC under-9s play matches most Sunday mornings in the Midsomer Norton league and train on Saturday mornings at Saltford Sports Club. The team are currently looking for new players to join them for the 2020/21

season, so if your son or daughter is starting Year 4 in September and is interested in football, they would love to hear from you. All abilities welcome. You can email mclauchland@hotmail.com or call Derek on 07961 977191.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB Join us before season ends! THE bowls season is coming into its final month, so why not make the most of it? Frys Bowling Club is still open for new members, so please come and give the game of bowls a go. Through August, we have been able to arrange club games on Saturday afternoons, with an internal pairs league taking place on Wednesday afternoons. Members have also been using the green most afternoons in the week, so there should be someone on hand to help you get started. For more information about Frys Bowling Club, or if you wish to apply for membership or arrange tuition, please contact our secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@ gmail.com.
