Campaigners want planners to reject the airport's expansion bid

Fears over extra

From Page 1 As well as the ‘severe noise and air pollution’, campaigners are concerned about the health and wellbeing consequences. There are also growing fears that more people will try to avoid parking charges by leaving their cars in the area’s residential streets and catching the bus to the airport. It is also said that local communities will be affected by an increase in traffic as the airport does not have any rail links. It is predicted there will be an extra 10,000 cars a day heading to the airport, raising ‘massive concerns about extra pollution in the already toxic air.’ Campaigners told residents at a public meeting in Keynsham: “Everything will change - life will not continue as we know it.” The meeting was organised

by Keynsham resident Richard Prior, who said it was important for residents to hear about the impact of the proposed airport expansion as it was ‘a growing concern.’ He said: “Keynsham is going to be affected by even more aircraft traffic and it’s going to be a significant increase. There is no doubt about it, the people of Keynsham will suffer. “We are looking at planes over Keynsham all the time, and the night flights are going to disturb people’s sleep and maybe their health. “People are just going to look out their windows and see planes. The noise is going to be very loud and distracting. “Then there’s the environmental concerns this will leave a huge carbon footprint.”

night flights, traffic and pollution He added: “We are in a climate emergency and we must stop this expansion. It’s simple; Bristol Airport is big enough and shouldn’t get any bigger.” A panel of specialists, including an environmental consultant and aerospace expert, spoke at the meeting explaining why they are calling on North Somerset Council to reject the current planning application. They all agreed: “The expansion plans are terrifying.” Bristol Airport currently has 8.6 million passengers a year. It wants to expand to 12 million by 2025, with a planned strategy of expanding to 20 million. Campaigners also highlight the expected 623,000 tonnes of carbon entering the atmosphere at high levels, and the 2,700 car parking spaces proposed for nearby Green Belt land.

Bristol City Councillor Steve Clarke said the airport expansion was ‘a huge issue that puts everything else into complete insignificance.’ He said: “This is really going to impact on the Keynsham area. There are going to be unrestricted night flights between 11.30pm and 6am. “In the months of June, July and August when many people leave their windows open, it’s going to be very disturbing. “This additional noise can cause heart problems and will have a real impact on the elderly and the young in particular.” John Adams, Director of Stop Bristol Airport Expansion, said the airport expansion was ‘a ragbag of a planning application.’ He said: “This is not a NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) campaign, we are thinking globally and

acting locally. There’s a huge momentum of resistance building, and people from Keynsham are encouraged to get on board. The airport expansion would completely destroy their quality of life.” About 30 members of the public attended the meeting at Keynsham Methodist Church on December 4. They raised their own concerns about noise and pollution, and asked questions about how the airport expansion would affect them. One resident from Chewton Keynsham said there had been an increase in traffic in the last year as taxi drivers were using the hamlet as a rat-run to get to the airport. She said: “As well as traffic, the sky is already awash with planes. The airport has already ruined the beautiful country

environment, and no one wants it to get worse.” B&NES Councillor Alistair Singleton, who represents Saltford, said he had objected to the airport expansion as his constituents had contacted him about congested streets. He said: “People drive to Saltford and leave their cars there to catch the bus to the airport. There simply isn’t the capacity to have people parking there for two weeks.” It will be up to North Somerset councillors to decide if the expansion can go ahead, and a decision is expected in January or February. n NEWS THE youngest members of the Keynsham community will be getting together to prove that it’s never too early to get stuck into a good book. The Baby Book Club is being launched in January so that babies can share the enjoyment of opening up a book and seeing the story being brought to life. The Saturday morning sessions aim to aid child development by getting more babies not only reading, but also interacting with the story inside. Weekly sessions will have a story book and fun activities linked to the theme, including singing, playing musical instruments, sensory play, arts and crafts, and lots of bubbles. There will be two sessions on a Saturday morning aimed at different age ranges. Under-twos will be welcomed from 10.15am to 11am, then the 11.15am to 12 noon session is for two to four-year-olds. The Baby Book Club is being launched by mother-of-two Vicky Burford of Keynsham after a successful trial in December. She is mum to 18-month-old Samuel and five-month-old Sofia. She said: “The two classes for different age ranges are very hands-on and interactive. It’s all about reading alongside sensory exploration and developing fine motor skills. “For the younger ones we’ll be exploring sounds and textures as children are encouraged to touch and feel the books. Then the toddlers will be encouraged to learn about phonics. “We have welcome and goodbye songs with actions that children soon get the hang of, but most of all we’ll be having lots of fun.” The Baby Book Club is also a way to bring parents together and encourage friendships, as those who work may not be able to attend the usual weekday baby and toddler groups and classes. Vicky, who is a registered childminder, is currently studying for a childcare degree at the University of West of England. She has been working with children for 15 years and is well-known for running Treasure Island Pre-School in Elim Church until it closed in 2012. She said: “I’m at university full-time and my children are in childcare so I know myself

Baby book club brings magic of stories alive

One of the youngsters enjoying a Saturday morning session at the Baby Book Club how hard it is to meet other parents. There really is a gap when it comes to groups at the weekends for working parents. “So much goes on in the week for young children but you often miss out on all of that if you are at work. “This is something at the weekend where those busy working parents can come together over coffee and cake.”

A successful trial session was held in December, with regular sessions starting on Saturday January 18 at a Keynsham venue yet to be announced. The cost is £5 per child and £2 for siblings, and booking in advance is essential. To find out more or to reserve your spot, get in touch with Vicky at mrs.v.burford@ gmail.com

MP Rees-Mogg wins four in a row CONSERVATIVE MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has held onto his North East Somerset seat. Just over half of the 56,477 votes cast on December 12 were for the Leader of the House of Commons. The Tory incumbent was re-elected with 28,360 votes – 50.4 per cent of the vote. He has been North East Somerset’s MP since the constituency was created in 2010, and this was his fourth consecutive victory in the seat after wins in 2010, 2015 and 2017. The Conservatives now have a majority of 14,729 in North East Somerset compared to a majority of 10,235 at the election in 2017. This year Mr Rees-Mogg went headto-head with four other parties in the constituency; Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Independent. The constituency turnout was 76.64 per cent, up from 75.7 per cent in 2017. Mr Rees-Mogg kept a low-profile during the election campaign after he came under fire for making controversial comments about the Grenfell Tower fire. But he was seen voting in his home

village of West Harptree and was at the election count at the University of Bath with his wife and son. He is reported to have made a swift exit, ignoring journalists’ requests for interviews, as soon as the North East Somerset seat was declared. The only speech he gave was on stage after the declaration, where he thanked his campaign team including his family, who he said had been at the forefront of his canvassing effort. He said: “My greatest gratitude goes to the Prime Minister, who has managed to win this victory for the Conservatives to ensure he can deliver on the promises that he has given. “I think his leadership, his inspiration, has been of enormous importance to the Conservative Party up and down the country. “It is a triumph for Boris Johnson - the best night for the Conservatives since 1987.” Mark Huband, Labour, got 13,631 votes; Nick Coates, Liberal Democrats, got 12,422 votes, Fay Whitfield, Green, 1,423 votes and Shaun Hughes, Independent, 472 votes.

Neutering: the facts

TV role is a dream

Why neuter? The number of dogs and cats is far greater than the number of good homes that can be found for them. Thousands of healthy animals are euthanised and many are left to fend for themselves. Having your animal neutered will not only help to reduce these numbers, it is also one of the simplest and most practical ways of safeguarding their health and welfare. Neutering prevents fatal diseases such as mammary cancer, pyometra, testicular cancer and prostate disease. It can also reduce behaviour such as roaming and aggression, therefore reducing the risk of fights and health conditions associated with this.

When to neuter? Vets would prefer to neuter animals before they reach sexual maturity in most cases. For cats, depending on their weight, it could be as early as four months old, and for male dogs six months of age. A bitch’s breed can determine the best time for her to be spayed. Smaller breeds that are fully grown by six months can be done at this time, but larger breeds would benefit from waiting until fully grown to reduce the risk of osteosarcomas in the growth plates. It makes no difference whether a bitch is spayed before or after she has her first season, but we do not spay during her season or too close to starting or finishing one.

The Procedure Neutering is carried out under general anaesthetic. It is a safe, routine procedure carried out every day, so it is very rare that something will go wrong. The whole process takes only one day in the hospital. Animals must be starved overnight before the operation to reduce the risk of surgical complications. Post-operative care involves a free check-up after two days and 10 days, restricted exercise for a maximum of 10 days, administering pain relief, and preventing your pet from licking their wound with a buster collar or bodysuit. It can be a daunting process, but once it is done you can relax, knowing that you have lowered the risk of certain problems and diseases.

come true for psychic medium Indigo A PSYCHIC medium from Keynsham has landed her dream job of helping others through an interactive TV channel. Indigo Amy Packman – who has the stage name of Indigo Starseed – can be seen in front of the camera on the Psychic Today satellite-TV channel. She is one of the regular psychics on the Sky channel who offers members of the public direct access to predictions and readings live on air. Indigo takes phone calls and text messages from people with a whole host of questions. They often include those who have lost a loved one and need help with the grieving process, those needing relationship advice and those facing dilemmas in their careers. She was headhunted for the TV role because of her expertise in her field and says she tries to offer ‘love and light’ to all who get in touch. Indigo said: “If people are

Card readings are among the services Indigo offers feeling a bit lost and need some guidance on where to go next, I am on the other end of the phone for them. “It could be about a relationship, work or a development in their life. I take calls from people around the world and do my best to help them to move forward in life.”

She added: “This TV role is my biggest achievement. It’s hard work but very enjoyable. I love it.” Psychic Today is broadcast seven nights a week from 4.30pm to 11pm, with Indigo working a variety of shifts at the TV studio in Milton Keynes. Indigo hopes her TV appearances will help to debunk the stereotypes of psychics as mystical, mysterious women with crystal balls. She said: “We all know that when some people hear the word ‘psychic’ they think con-artists and deception. “But people should leave their stereotypes and cynicism behind. We are definitely not cashing in on people’s sorrows. “It’s a very old trade and we’re actually more popular than ever.” Indigo, 42, started her psychic development in Bath about 15 years ago and said that ‘everything just started falling into place’.

She has been working as a psychic medium for ten years. She works from home, visits people in their homes, hosts public events and offers psychic medium parties. She offers single oracle and tarot card readings, three-card readings and psychic readings, as well as general guidance and coaching. The mother-of-one says that, as a psychic medium, she ‘taps into someone’s energy and feels what they feel’ then ‘brings through information to tell them.’ Indigo said: “It’s about being able to connect with people, feeling that comfort and closeness. “I use feelings, sound, taste and smells but I don’t say anything that is sad, bad or scary. I am gentle, calm and comforting and have integrity.” For more information about Indigo, email Indigostarseed@ gmail.com

ON THE BEAT

Stay safe - and dry - behind the wheel

T

hat’s it another year done – well, nearly. It’s a really busy time for the police, with not just the weather conditions adding to our problems but the additional nighttime economy, with with PC most people going out James with friends, family and Evans colleagues for Christmas celebrations. There’s a few things to think about to keep yourself safe at this time of year: It’s likely you will have a few hundred pounds worth of presents displayed neatly under a Christmas tree as part of your celebrations - if so, think about security. Keep them out of sight of windows and make sure you are securing your home properly. You don’t want to have these items stolen and your Christmas ruined. Operation Tonic, the police’s drink-drive campaign, is in full flow. Apart from an officer suspecting that a driver has consumed alcohol, did you realise that any traffic offence - from a defective lightbulb to manner of driving -

empowers an officer to perform the roadside breath test? Also, we run these operations in the early hours, so please don’t get caught the morning after the night before. People often get caught the next day assuming they will be under the limit. It’s always better not to drive the morning after you have been out drinking. n While we’re talking about driving, if you

drive or have a car that someone else uses, please check your vehicle’s condition. We have already seen a number of accidents occur this year that could have been easily avoided through better routine maintenance. Tyres are the most important part of your car - they keep you connected to the road and should be examined regularly. The new driving test includes vehicle maintenance and is something we should all adopt. In the police, we check our vehicles every day we drive them, as it is always the responsibility of the driver to do this. So even if you drive a company car that is serviced yearly, you should be checking it yourself regularly. n At this time of year, we often hear about elderly and infirm people being excluded from contact, so I would ask you to pay attention to your neighbours. Check on their welfare and make sure they have everything they need - just be a good neighbour. People are generally very proud and don’t want to ask for help. From all the beat team at Keynsham, we hope you all have a great festive period and a happy New Year.

Circus mice shine in window contest

Owner called on the help of staff and customers to put together their impressive window displays based on The Greatest Showman. The Keynsham Winter Festival competition, run by the Keynsham Town Council, saw businesses in and around the High Street going head-to-head for the prizes. But it was Cocoa Hair Design on Station Road that impressed judges the most, with a circusthemed display that included a circus tent made out of fabric and cardboard, surrounded by lots of crocheted mice.

The salon was named Best Business Window and overall winner of the competition. Owner Jodie Hawkins, who put together the display while on maternity leave, said: “We are very grateful to our lovely client who kindly crocheted the mice for us. We’ve received so many compliments about the display.” The St Peter’s Hospice shop in the High Street won Best Charity Window for the second year in a row. The window featured a circus ringmaster with a female trapeze artist standing with a hula hoop. Assistant manager Kate Wood said it was great to be involved in the competition as it made them feel part of the community. Kate added: “Unfortunately

The St Peter's Hospice shop display that won Best Charity Window we don’t have the display in the window any more as people bought the items. n NEWS THE increasing number of people struggling to make ends meet means Keynsham Food Bank is busier than ever helping hundreds of adults and children. The food bank expects figures to show this has been its busiest year to date, with more and more people unable to afford to feed themselves. A total of 816 people were fed by the Keynsham Food Bank during the last financial year (2018-2019) – 360 of these were children. So far this financial year, 641 people (291 of them children) have already sought help, suggesting that with four months to go until the end of year, it will exceed last year’s figures. However, food bank staff believe they are, at the moment, well positioned to meet the demand due to generous donations from the community. In addition to a recent collection at Tesco, many workplaces have asked their staff to donate to food collections in December. Alan Hale, food bank co-ordinator, said they were braced for a busy Christmas, with figures suggesting a record number of people in crisis needing help. He said: “We have an extremely generous community who recognise that there are those in food crisis in and around the town. They give with love and enable us to help those in crisis. “Recently we held a two-day collection at Tesco and the giving was amazing. It will enable us to support those referred to us in food crisis." The Keynsham Food Bank serves Keynsham, Saltford and Chew Valley but often receives requests for help from people

Food bank busier than ever as more families go hungry

Food banks in the UK are busier than ever, with the Keynsham bank bracing itself for a busy Christmas living in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Many of those seeking help at food banks are in paid employment. Others are suffering ill health or facing challenging life experiences, often with a lack of support. Alan said: “Whilst many people might equate food banks with benefits, that would be a false assumption, as in the case of our clients the people with the

most need have been those in employment but on a low wage. “But of course, we also help those on benefits, and indeed anyone when they are referred to us with a voucher." The Trussell Trust, which works to stop UK hunger and poverty, is concerned that food banks could soon struggle to keep up with the need for food parcels. They found that there was a

44 per cent increase in the need for food parcels in December last year compared to other months. Emma Reeve, chief executive of the Trussell Trust, said: “Nine in 10 of us believe hunger in the UK is a problem. Food banks cannot and should not have to continue to pick up the pieces. “It’s in our power to reach a future where everyone has enough money for the basics. This can change.”

Help for older people gets £100k boost SEVEN good causes are reaping the benefits of a share of £100k to carry on the great work they are doing. Keynsham-based St Monica Trust’s Community Impact Team has awarded funds of between £3,220 and £20,000 to groups including Bristol and Avon Chinese Women’s Group, Bristol Poverty Action Group, Life Cycle, North Bristol Advice Centre, Southern Brooks and Way Out West. The funding supports established projects providing vital services for older people which are already making a difference in their local communities, rather than funding start-up projects. Community Connections manager Debbie Wills said: “We think we’ve chosen a broad range of organisations who are all providing vital services for older people across the South West. This includes helping older people to access welfare services, encouraging isolated older people to engage with social activities and funding a community choir.” Organisations that improve the lives of older people were invited to apply for funding to St Monica Trust’s Community Impact Team in October. Funding of up to a maximum of £20,000 was then awarded to

organisations that are working to improve the lives of individuals aged 55-plus. One of the organisations awarded the maximum grant of £20,000 is the Centre for Sustainable Energy. The charity provides energy advice and support to local people and is committed to tackling climate change and ending the misery caused by living in cold homes.

The grant will help fund an experienced energy adviser to deliver home visits and in-depth support to vulnerable older people in Bristol, B&NES, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The energy advice service supports older people in fuel poverty and those whose health

may be affected by living in a cold home. Support includes helping older people understand their energy consumption, use their heating controls properly, reduce high energy costs, avoid damp and mould in their homes, and switch to better value energy tariffs. Older people are among those whose health is most at risk from the harmful effects of living in a cold home. Centre for Sustainable Energy’s chief executive, Simon Roberts OBE, said: “Older people are one of the most vulnerable groups during the cold weather, particularly if their home isn’t very energy efficient or they are living on a very low income. “Nobody should be rationing their heating this winter. Thanks to this funding we will be able to continue to provide the in-depth support needed for vulnerable older people across the west of England to enjoy warmer and healthier homes.” St Monica Trust is a not-for-profit organisation providing accommodation, care and support for older and disabled people in Bristol and surrounding counties. The trust runs a retirement community at The Chocolate Quarter, the former Somerdale factory in Keynsham.

n NEWS IN just over six months Cat Midgley has gone from employee to employer and turned her dream of owning a café into a reality. Cat is the new owner of the Temple Street Canteen and is busy making plans to leave her own stamp on the venue. She is keen to give the café a new look, putting the upstairs space to better use, and will eventually unveil a new menu, continuing to offer local, seasonal and ethical food. But her priority is to build on its current reputation as a community venue where everyone is made to feel welcome. Cat said: “It’s all happened quite quickly but I wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s always been my dream to own my own café and there’s just something about this place that I love. “I really want to build on what has already been achieved at Temple Street Canteen. There’s a real family feel to the place and it’s great that the café is so involved in the community. “I’m also a believer in its vision to be ethical - that will very much continue. “I’m excited about the future and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.” Cat, of Carpenters Lane, Keynsham, will already be recognised by many as she has worked part-time behind the counter at the Temple Street Canteen since May. She is a travelling chef by trade, having worked in various roles in the UK and overseas, including several ski seasons in the French Alps as a resort chef at a chalet for 30 people. She has also been employed on long-term contracts by families in the South of France and Cornwall. Cat did a photography degree, then worked in retail for five years, before signing up for a chalet hosting course. She said: “Each job is tailored to who I am working for, but organisation is always crucial. “No two jobs have ever been the same, so I’m ready to rise to this new challenge.” Cat, who grew up in Willsbridge, will officially become the new café owner when Stefan Edwards sells up at Christmas. She is calling it her ‘Christmas present to herself.’ Stefan will hand over the keys to Cat after nearly two and a half years in charge as he

Canteen will stay at heart of community, vows Cat

Cat Midgley, new owner of the Temple Street Canteen, has cooked for skiers in the French Alps wants to spend more time with his young family. But Cat doesn’t do things by halves as she has no choice but to start her new owner’s role from afar. She had already committed to another ski season so she won’t physically be running the Temple Street Canteen in person until she returns to England in May. She is currently working her fourth ski season in Meribel but says she’ll be ‘thinking about Keynsham from the mountains.’ Cat said: “It’s quite an unusual situation

but there’s a very capable manager and team in place, I have every confidence in the team and I’m only a phone call away.” Temple Street Canteen opened in October 2017 and employs eight part-time staff. It is known for hosting a wide variety of events such as live music, story-telling, book clubs and wine nights. It also hosts free lunches for children every Tuesday in the school holidays and offers a Christmas Day meal for those who may otherwise have been alone.

Developers A PROPERTY development company has won a regional award for bringing a former office block in the heart of Keynsham back to life. Aequus has beaten off competition to win the developer of the year title for its transformation of the former Bath & North East Somerset Council building. The developer was presented with the 2019 Developer Award at the Bath Property Awards in recognition of the Riverside View development in Keynsham. The building’s 95 contemporary studio, one and two-bedroom apartments have been created as a key part of the town’s regeneration. And 80 per cent of the units have been sold off plan. Aequus was set up by B&NES Council to develop and deliver property for rental and ownership. Rather than selling the site to a private developer, the council will run the project itself, and profits from property sales will be used to fund frontline services. Aequus chairman Charles Gerrish said: “I was delighted to collect the award on behalf of Aequus, which I believe recognises our approach to regeneration and sustainability and reflects the hard work of all those directly involved."

win award for role in town regeneration The Bath Property Awards at the Apex City of Bath Hotel celebrated the dynamic property sector, from residential to commercial, and from lettings to new builds. Mr Gerrish collected the award alongside Aequus non-executive director Les Kew. It is the second year of the awards, and the panel of judges were impressed with the vital work of Aequus in helping Keynsham’s regeneration. They said: “It’s becoming an exemplar developer, delivering affordable, low-energy homes in the locality.” Martin Shields, the council’s corporate director, said: “Aequus has done some excellent work in redeveloping this important site that supports Keynsham’s regeneration. “I am pleased to congratulate Aequus on the industry recognition it has received for developing this empty building, which provides much-needed housing in the town.” Aequus Developments was established in 2016 by the council to develop, deliver, own and manage property for both the rental and homeowner market. Artists' painted rocks are HUNDREDS of rocks have been painted and hidden as an inspirational trend encourages creativity across Keynsham. Painting, drawing and decorating large stones has become second nature to people of all ages and abilities as part of the Keynsham Rocks group. The group now has more than 400 members and prides itself on being an affordable way to create art and spread positivity. Budding artists simply transform a rock with a design of their choice – animals and cartoon characters are popular. They then hide it somewhere in public, and whoever finds it can either keep it or re-hide it. It means each rock has its own unique story and sentimental value. Ken Flatt, who helped to set up Keynsham Rocks, said they were pleased Keynsham was now part of a thriving international community of amateur artists. Many people sign and date their artwork and scribble ‘Keynsham Rocks’ on the back. They know that rocks painted in Keynsham have travelled throughout Europe and as far field as Canada and America. A Facebook group has now also been set

up to help track the journeys of Keynsham’s rocks. Those who find rocks are encouraged to post a picture and detail their discovery. Ken, of Park Road, Keynsham, said: “We just want people to celebrate Keynsham and its artwork. Keynsham is in Bristol, comes under B&NES Council but has its own unique identity. “It’s really nice to have a rock-painting community. It is free art for everyone to enjoy. “It really is spreading a lot of positivity and it’s the only opportunity some people have to get creative. “People can paint whatever they like. People from all walks of life are involved so it’s whatever is important to them.” Ken, known to many as Hero, and his wife George Morgan originally set up the group in August 2018, but it’s only in the last few months that it has gathered momentum. Ken, who draws as a hobby, estimates he has already painted about 250 rocks. His artwork is inspired by science-fiction, pop culture and films. He has recently painted Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles designs. The father-of-two said members found

CHILDREN proved they weren’t too young to roll up their sleeves and learn about the importance of picking up litter. Pupils from Chandag Infant School got into the community spirit and joined the Keynsham Wombles for a litter-pick. They grabbed their litterpickers and bin bags and filled an impressive five bags of rubbish from the area around their school. They targeted the entrance and driveway to their school, as well as the nearby Wellsway School playing field. The litter-pick taught them that they were responsible for their own environment, the impact of litter and which rubbish could be recycled. The youngsters from the Year 2 Council and Eco Team also got a lesson in how you can’t control

the weather, as the heavens opened and it proved to be a wet and soggy litter-pick! Members of Neighbourly also took part in the litter-pick, which lasted for more than an hour. Neighbourly, an organisation that connects businesses with local good causes, had arranged for Keynsham Wombles to receive money from the sale of plastic bags by large retail stores. Keynsham Wombles have used the donation they received to buy more litter-pickers and other equipment. Jo Page of the Keynsham Wombles said: “Despite the weather, the children had a great time and enjoyed working with the staff from Neighbourly. “They collected five bags of rubbish and some interesting items, including a bike wheel.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Helping us to dream of a better future

I

s a crisis of imagination the reason that the world isn’t progressing far or fast enough in our goals to tackle mass extinction and climate change? Organisations like Extinction Rebellion and the School Strikes are trying to jolt people into taking the emergency seriously and creating new and exciting ways to take action. A few thinkers, academics and journalists are beginning to argue that our failure to respond to climate change is a “crisis of culture” (novelist Amitav Ghosh) and that “political failure is, in essence, a failure of imagination” (George Monbiot). Transition Town founder Rob Hopkins has written a book that examines this idea. In it he explores ways we can unleash our imagination and dare to dream about a different way of thinking and doing in relation to how we live in the world. Rob starts with outdoor play. He says that our children are so rarely outside that they’re disconnected to nature, and he explores great examples of how people and organisations are helping to get them into fresh air and think creatively (something I’d love to get my teens to do more of!) Then he looks at how the devastating effects

of poverty are so detrimental to our mental and physical health. He believes that creativity and play can help heal us and gives us examples of how people are already doing this. Then he explores how our deep connection with nature has been eroded, and how that makes us all poorer in terms of our imagination. Finally, he talks about storytelling, something we’ve been doing for millennia, and that we are arguably losing the art of. Oral storytelling stimulates areas of our brain that feed the imagination and help us think creatively. If we all tell positive stories about how we can overcome climate change and the threats to our species, then we can dare to believe in a better outcome for the future of our own species. Transition Keynsham is delighted to host Rob Hopkins at the Space in Keynsham at 7pm on January 7 to talk about his book and explore how we can all stimulate our imaginations and be healthier and happier. You can book in the usual way online via KeynshamTickets - https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/. I hope to see you there for some positive dreaming! Liz Barling

n NEWS CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to target every shop on Keynsham High Street as they step up their fight against single-use plastic. Members of the Eco Group at Keynsham Methodist Church have started with the town’s big-name national stores such as Tesco, Poundland, Boots and Iceland. But they will then move on to smaller independent shops, saying: “No one is excluded, we will target them all.” They visit some stores in person, but usually go ‘straight to the top’ by sending emails to each shop’s chief executive. The group has been campaigning since Keynsham Town Council set the objective of becoming a town free of singleuse plastic. Mike Barrow, chairman of the Eco Group, said: “We are concentrating our efforts on retailers. We will go to the shops, coffee shops and takeaways. “We want to know what they are doing to achieve the town council’s objective. “We visit retailers to look around, but the local manager hasn’t always got much influence on what they can and cannot stock. So, to find someone with more authority, we go right to the top and email the chief executive.” He added: “We are making progress, there is a lot happening, but there is still so much to be done.” The group has been in existence for more than 20 years and campaigning against the use of plastic packaging for the last few years. The group has had a ‘mixed reaction’ from Tesco. They are pleased the supermarket is ‘making progress’ as Keynsham

21

Shops targeted in battle against single-use plastic

Eco Group members, from left, Jenny Barrow, Marion Garrett, Mike Barrow, Peter Lowe and Nola Lowe at Keynsham Methodist Church is among 10 Tesco stores across the country selected to collect and recycle thin plastics such as crisp packets and pet food pouches. However, they say Tesco has not kept its promise earlier this year to sell mushrooms in cardboard rather than plastic containers, and they would like the store to stop selling plastic partyware, such as cups, plates and cutlery. They are pleased Boots has introduced brown paper bags instead and replaced the use

of plastic carrier bags. They have also praised Iceland for its good credentials on plastic packaging. They have committed to eliminating plastic from its own-label range by the end of 2023 and have trialled two other plastic-free initiatives. However, the Eco Group says its approaches have been ignored by Poundland. The group has sent three emails to Poundland’s CEO but has heard nothing in return. Members are concerned about the store selling so much

single-use plastic, such as beer mugs, shot glasses, champagne flutes and cutlery. Mike added: “Single-use plastic is appalling stuff. It just ends up at landfill. When people say they are recycling their plastic, that is very good, but all they are really doing is creating more plastic for everyone to use. “We have to get rid of singleuse plastic altogether. I would like to see Keynsham achieve that in the not-too-distant future.”

SALTFORD MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

The Bird-in-Hand at the bottom of Saltford High Street was originally built as two thatched cottages, but when the Midland Railway was constructed in 1869 it became an inn catering for some of the navvies working on the line. Between the wars Saltford was a destination for cyclists and motorcyclists from Bristol and Bath. This photo, probably taken in the 1920s, seems to show some such visitors taking a break.

The town brought the theatre to its residents by throwing its very own Greatest Showman party for the Christmas lights switch-on. People got into the theme and dressed in ringmaster tail coats and top hats, while circus

performers mingled with families to show off their talents. Circus skills workshops were also held throughout the evening for wannabe jugglers and budding acrobats. Market stalls were decorated in big-top flags and shopkeepers had gone all out to be in with a chance of winning the annual window competition. Deputy Town Clerk Dawn

is the greatest show in town! Drury said: “The 2019 Greatest Showman Winter Festival proved to be a huge success. “It was fabulous to see so many families, young and old, enjoying our Christmas lights switch-on and festival activities. “The crowds that turned out to see the procession were by far the largest ever, and all who took part in the procession looked wonderful in their costumes.” The event on November 29, which was organised by Keynsham Town Council, kicked off at 6pm with the Christmas tree lights switch-on at St John’s Church, followed by a carol from the St John’s Church Choir. The church bells signalled the start of the procession which saw everyone filled with Christmas cheer as Santa made his way along the High Street on his sleigh. The town’s Christmas lights were then switched on before the entertainment continued at various venues. The Christmas lights were switched on by colouring competition winner Cora Mosedale with her magic wand.

And Good Citizen 2019 winners Erica Davies, Chief Keynsham Womble, and Richard Dyson, chairman of the Keynsham History Society, pushed the button on the Christmas tree lights. There was also a funfair, a climbing wall, Punch and Judy, carol singing, and some toetapping tunes from the Salvation Army brass. The entertainment on the main stage included the Keynsham Light Opera Group and Phoenix Youth Theatre. Davies & Way challenged residents to a host of games, while enjoying wine and nibbles, to help raise money for charity. Sales manager David Thompson said: “The Winter Festival is one of the many local events that we’re involved in that we all love being a part of. “It’s great to see the result of the hard efforts both the town council and residents, which is always such a fantastic evening and seems to increase in popularity each year.” The Keynsham Wombles were also out in force during and after the event to keep the streets tidy.

Can you help others to beat the cold?

Cold weather can take a devasting toll on the elderly - the number of excess winter deaths each year runs into the thousands in the South West VOLUNTEERS are needed to help keep vulnerable people warm in their homes as the temperatures drop this winter. People across our communities may be living in cold homes because they don’t know who to turn to for advice about cheaper heating bills. But help is at hand, as Bath & North East Somerset runs an Energy at Home Advice Service. However, they need volunteers who can spare a few hours per week to spread the word to residents on how to keep their homes warm and how to apply for entitlements such as the winter fuel allowance. The council is dedicated to helping residents and landlords make buildings more energy efficient and possibly install renewable energy. John Wilkinson, the council’s director of economy and growth, said: “Our Energy At Home Advice Service is there to help all our residents with a range of issues, such as reducing their energy bills, how to tackle condensation in cold weather or which energy-saving improvements are suitable for their homes. “This winter, we’d like as many vulnerable people in the district as possible to have the help they need to keep their

homes warm and stay healthy. “By volunteering to join the team, people could make a real difference in their community by supporting those who’d really benefit from energy efficiency measures during cold weather." The appeal came as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced the excess winter deaths figures by comparing the number of additional deaths between December and March to the rest of the year. The figures show that there were 5,170 excess winter deaths in the South West in 2017/2018, compared with 3,120 in 2016/2017. In Bath & North East Somerset alone, there were 110 excess winter deaths. Full training will be given to volunteers, including the opportunity to study for a City & Guilds qualification. If you're interested in finding out more about volunteering, email volunteers@cse.org.uk or call 0117 934 1400. Free advice on keeping warm and energy efficiency can be found at https://www. energyathome.org.uk/or by calling 0800 038 5680. Anyone needing emergency help for a cold home should call the council’s housing standards and improvement team on 01225 396444.

Dad Lee faces up to A FATHER has challenged himself to a month of fundraising to speak up for the men who feel they don’t have a voice. Lee Fellows wanted to do all he could to raise money and awareness for the men suffering with mental health issues. He wanted to spread the word about the high rate of male suicide as he fears men are going unheard as they don’t want to burden others with their struggles. Lee spent the month of November growing his moustache as part of Movember. The global campaign raises money for the treatment of testicular and prostate cancer and is used as a platform to get more men talking about their health, both mental and physical. It’s the fourth year in a row Lee has taken part in Movember but he wanted to make this year bigger and better. He dyed his hair and moustache purple at the start

of the month, then shaved off half his facial hair at the end of the month, before shaving it off completely on December 1. The 32-year-old also took part in two 10k races while describing himself as ‘the complete opposite of a runner.’ He completed the Bristol MoRun 10k at Ashton Court then the Castle Coombe 10k. He even ran the second race dressed as Batman – an outfit chosen by his five-year-old daughter Alyssa, who goes to St John’s Primary School. His month of fundraising has so far topped more than £200, and he is still collecting donations. Lee said: “It was definitely a month I won’t forget in a hurry. I just wanted to jazz things up a bit this year to encourage more people to donate. “I don’t run. I definitely don’t train. I just took went for it at my own pace, waddling through the best I could.

the challenge of helping silent sufferers “I’m not a runner. In fact I’m the complete opposite of a runner. Let’s just say my legs were very sore!” He added: “I’d like to thank my family, friends and everyone else who has been so supportive. My daughter just thinks her daddy is a bit silly for wearing what she chooses but she does like playing with my medals.” The issue of mental health is close to Lee’s heart because, when he was a teenager, he can remember his dad suffering and struggling to get help. He says things have improved since then, with a lot more help being available, but many men still suffer in silence. Lee said: “Men don’t tend to talk about what they are going through but we need to be there to support each other. “It’s very easy to blend into the background, just get on with life and say it’s not my problem. But we are all involved. “My fundraising is just about

Lee Fellows took part in the Movember challenge because he wants to help those men who still suffer in silence getting the message across. If I help just one person to go get help then it’s worth it. People

shouldn’t have to suffer behind closed doors. “We lose 60 young men to

suicide each hour. I’d much rather hear about people’s struggles than funerals.” Lee is no stranger to fundraising as he has taken part in all sorts of activities to raise money for charity over the years, but he’s never done so much in one month. He has worked at Costa in Keynsham High Street for four years and is known to get chatting to customers about his fundraising antics. He said: “I’m always looking for new things to do for charity. I’ll give anything a go. I can’t sit still for long - I have to come up with new ideas. “Who knows what I’m going to come up with next year for Movember? Everyone will just have to wait and see!” Lee also recently completed the Keynsham Bubble Run for the Wallace and Gromit Appeal and took part in Bath’s Santa Dash in aid of Dorothy House Hospice Care with his daughter.

Slimmers lose tons - and gain a much better life SUPER slimmers in Keynsham, Saltford and Stockwood have lost over 12 tons in weight – that’s the equivalent of 12 cars! All together, the members of these groups have lost an incredible 1,774 stones in the last year. The members, who attend groups every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Ali Hacker and her partner Stuart have lost over 15 stones between them in the last 12 months following the Extra Easy plan. Ali says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before we joined Slimming World we thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active, and Stuart loves that he can still have chips every night! “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives - some people have probably even saved their lives. “It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips

Before and after - Ali and Stuart lost over 15 stones between them in 12 months and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. There is nothing like that feeling of losing weight! “The support and inspiration we get from our consultant has also been integral to our success. She understands the ups and downs of slimming and can offer us help and advice based on her own experience. Without her, I don’t think I’d have achieved nearly as much.” Kelly, one of the local consultants, says:

“I’m delighted that our members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. “Slimming has never been more important - 55.6% of people living in Bristol are overweight or obese and, as a team, my colleagues and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life. There’s no better job satisfaction than that!”

n KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Looking back at year of sadness and smiles

A

s we say goodbye to 2019, Keynsham in Bloom members can reflect on the happy and sad times we have experienced during the year. Our band of merry members and volunteers are delighted in achieving gold in the South West in Bloom competition for the fourth year running, can be proud of all the money raised at our numerous stalls that have enabled us to make the town florally beautiful, and smile with pleasure at the number of our local competition entries which have grown year on year – we love visiting and judging all the garden entries. Our group of crafting ladies knitted and crocheted a beautiful array of floral decorations to deck our Christmas tree in St John’s Church as part of the Christmas tree festival. Well done, ladies! Look out for information on our craft projects for next spring and summer. Dee would be so proud of how our group of members and volunteers is growing stronger and bigger, with determination to make 2020 a special year full of new projects for our town. Our theme for the coming year is ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ – a planting scheme in bright rainbow colours (entry forms available in the New Year). We have already decided on our trail for 2020 – rainbowcoloured chairs decorated with potted plants, flowers or covered with floral stickers. So why not find yourself an old chair and join

in the fun? All are welcome to take part or just follow the trail. Entry forms will be available in March, trails maps available from the beginning of July and the trail will run from mid-July to the end of August. Further details to follow. And finally, the in Bloom group members were excited to receive news that Amberol (planter suppliers) have kindly donated a four-tier cascading flower planter to the town of Keynsham, in memory of Dee, and we are currently seeking permission to locate this close to the entrance of Keynsham library, so that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the display planned by the in Bloom group whilst remembering this very special person. Look out for more 2020 plans in future editions of Keynsham Voice. In the meantime, you can contact us by emailing Dawn at our new in Bloom email address keyshaminbloom@icloud.com, following us on the Keynsham in Bloom Facebook page, or by phoning 01225 395951. MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Do your bit to make people feel safe

W

ith a new year comes the opportunity to reflect, take stock of the last 365 days and plan for the year ahead. I’ve very proud of what the OPCC and the Constabulary have achieved in 2019 but am aware there’s always plenty more to be done. As your PCC I will continue to act as a fierce advocate for victims and as your voice in policing. I would also like to challenge you to do something different by getting involved in your local policing service in 2020. Volunteers play a vital part in assisting me in my role and make a huge difference in ensuring our local communities are safe and feel safe. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and it

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens is always a privilege to work alongside so many people who selflessly give up their

time. Find out more about volunteering roles on the PCC’s and Constabulary’s website. As always in December, Avon and Somerset Police have launched Op Tonic, a monthlong campaign that includes high-visibility and covert patrols to target drink and drug drivers. Over the festive period, many of us will be having fun and celebrating with friends and family. But remember, driving under the influence of drink or drugs is a serious crime that can devastating consequences. Even being ‘slightly’ over the limit will still land you with a penalty if you’re caught and it’s really not worth the risk. I know officers will be working hard to keep the roads of Avon and Somerset safe during the festive period. I believe that local people

support the police in doing all they can to bring offenders to justice so they can ensure our roads are safe to use over Christmas as well as the whole year round. Finally, I want to take a moment to think about the people who will be working hard day and night over Christmas and New Year to ensure our safety and protection. It’s always an extremely busy time of year for those who work in emergency services and I know they all go above and beyond to keep us safe. I want to say a massive thank-you to those in the NHS, police and other emergency services as well as those in voluntary and charity organisations who work hard during the festive period to support local communities.

the great outdoors

SENIOR and primary school pupils are coming together to create a new learning approach focused on the outdoor environment. The collaboration will see Wellsway School work with Chandag Infant and Junior Schools to transform an overgrown garden into a forest school. The aim is to encourage, motivate, engage and inspire pupils through positive outdoor experiences. This will include learning about flowers and trees, trying out gardening for themselves, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. The benefits from learning and playing outside include learning by experience, confidence and independence and taking an interest in nature, as well as many health benefits, such as improved mental health and improved physical fitness. The new outdoor classroom at the senior school will be used by all ages, from reception to sixth form, and it is expected to be in use soon after Easter 2020. The work is being carried out thanks to a £3,500 grant from the Nineveh Charitable Trust, which supports a broad range of projects across the UK with an emphasis on promoting a better understanding of the countryside. Spearheading the project are Dave Sage, Wellsway’s Green Team co-ordinator, and Sarah Stone, Chandag Junior and Infant Schools’ forest school co-ordinator.

They held the first garden makeover working party on a Saturday morning in early December and welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of greenfingered volunteers. They included 13 people – the youngest being just six years old. There was lots of work to be done, including shovelling large volumes of compost into wheelbarrows and transporting it to a raised bed under construction, digging out stubborn nettle and bindweed roots and coppicing hazel trees. They also swept up large amounts of fallen leaves to make new compost, and removed the dead but vicious brambles that had built up in a corner of the garden. Mr Sage and Ms Stone agreed it had been a very successful first meeting and they are both looking forward to seeing the finished garden in all its glory. Mr Sage said: “We would like to thank all those who gave up their time, including pupils and parents, and three students from Wellsway completing their Duke of Edinburgh silver award volunteering. “It was a great effort and achievement.” More working parties are planned after Christmas and everyone involved with the two schools is encouraged to participate. Both of the Keynsham schools are part of the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust, which is responsible for 13 schools from Bath to Bristol.

Caring golfers chip in for cancer charity GOLFERS have raised thousands of pounds for a cancer charity because they all know families that have been torn apart by the disease. Charity events held throughout the year at Stockwood Vale Golf Club have raised £7,232 for the planned Dyson Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) in Bath. Club members came together to make contributions for the Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. Mark Tidcombe, of Stockwood Vale Golf Club, said: “As this year’s club captain, I nominated the Forever Friends Appeal to fundraise for because we all know family and friends who have had cancer and used the services at the RUH. “Through the generosity of the members and friends, I am pleased we could raise a great sum for this great cause, whilst also having a bit of fun in the process.” Mark presented a cheque

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Mike Burke Missioner & Team Vicar Keynsham Team Ministry

H

ave you ever wondered what your legacy might be? Sometimes people put amusing messages on their tombstones or coffins. I once saw the words: ‘I was hoping for a pyramid’ written on a gravestone. Last year a very dear friend of mine died after a long illness. He faced his coming death with great faith, courage and a mischievous sense of humour. Although his passing was tragic and painful, the willingness to speak openly about his coming death allowed many of us to spend quality time with him, in which we could tell him what an amazing friend and incredible human being he was and to relay stories of when he had helped us through difficult times. As a result, he was able to hear those tributes that are normally reserved for funerals and

to discover that his life had been worthwhile despite being cut tragically short. Not all of us have that experience, yet the question remains, what is our legacy? How have we impacted the lives of others in a positive way? Someone once said, at the end of life no-one looks back and thinks, ‘I wish I had spent more time at the office’. The new year is often a time for looking back and looking forward. The good news is that there is still time to leave something good behind, to play forward love, joy, wonder, forgiveness, gratitude and kindness. The next ten years are critical for our planet we all have the opportunity to make important, yet tough decisions about how we live, how we consume and the type of world we want to pass

on to our children and grandchildren. Likewise, it isn’t too late to tell someone what they mean to you. To practise generosity and hospitality. To show kindness to the stranger. To put the interests of future generations before your own immediate needs. To rant against injustice and resolve to do something about it. It isn’t too late to say, ‘I was wrong, please forgive me’. Jesus spoke a lot about sowing and reaping; St Paul took up this idea, that we can all sow a crop that produces a legacy of goodness. “The one who sows to please their sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest…Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” (Galatians 6.8-10).

Members of the Rocky Beavers Colony paying a visit to residents of Charlton House Nursing Home, where they sang a specially-themed song

Here's a tuneful dose of festive cheer

T

he weeks leading up to Christmas were particularly busy for 1st Keynsham, who were getting into the festive spirit by taking part in the annual St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers had a tree each to decorate, and could show off their creativity by making decorations. Crafts included figurines and wreaths using paracording (a Scout favourite) and painting onto wooden discs – as well as plenty of glitter. Elsewhere in the community, the Rocky Beavers Colony brought some Christmas cheer to the residents of Charlton House Nursing Home. They even prepared a song to sing for them - The 12 Days of Beaver Christmas - swapping the likes of seven swans a-swimming for seven neckers knotted. They also made the residents Christmas cards, and then had time to chat and ask them questions. A lovely time was had by all.

as to our sponsors UK Structural Glass Designs Ltd and Key Property Lawyers. The next shoot is in the spring on March 28-29, with bookings now open. Contact claypigeon@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk to book places. n Congratulations to the Cubs who competed in the Wansdyke district archery competition on December 7, hosted at 1st Keynsham Scouts’ HQ. A huge thank-you goes to everyone who has helped and supported Scouts in 2019 – we hope to make 2020 even better!

n November’s annual winter weekend clay pigeon shoot was also a huge success, with a record number of people coming to the Chelwood campsite. We are delighted to announce that £2,017 was raised, which will go towards Scouting in Keynsham in the year ahead. Thank you to everyone who came down and helped out, as well

Every pupil at Chandag Infant School had a part to play in their huge production of Lights, Camel, Action!

Nativity magic old and new is a delight THERE’S nothing quite as magical as a primary school’s nativity play to kick-start the most wonderful time of the year. And youngsters across the Keynsham and Saltford area did not disappoint with this year’s selection of traditional and modern scripts. All their performances have provided an uplifting end-ofterm celebration for children, teachers and parents. Youngsters at Saltford Primary School had the crowd in hysterics with their performance of the Angel Express. As the newspaper Angel Express brought news of a special baby about to be born, the choir of angels decided to work on a special song to celebrate the birth. But they only had two weeks to come up with their vocal masterpiece. Teacher Miss Elizabeth Davis said: “Audiences were laughing out loud as the unruly choir of angels initially struggled to hold a tune. “However, with the birth of Jesus, everything fitted into place and the grand finale was a truly

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Time to look back down Temple Street

R

esidents are now moving into the newly built flats in Keynsham’s Riverside development. This makes it an opportune time to look back at some of the buildings that lined this side of Temple Street before Riverside was constructed in the 1970s. Temple Street was once a continuation of the High Street and led to the bridge at Dapps Hill, when this was the only crossing over the River Chew. It was named Temple Street in honour of Earl Temple of Newton Park. On the east side of the road there were several shops and at one time an abattoir at the Bath Hill end, but from opposite Rock Road was a continuous row of properties, mainly two-up, twodown cottages built at various times. These ran to the London Inn and on to The Ship. Whilst the houses at the Bath Hill end were demolished in the early 1960s to make way for the town hall and shops, the rest of the street lasted until at least 1967. Part of the land on which Riverside was built was used as a car park for a few years. The London Inn was knocked down in 1973 and the landlord, Charlie Simpkins, took the name with him when he took over the Royal Oak in the High Street. After a determined campaign, The Ship Inn was granted listed building status in 1971 so it

became the only old building to survive on that side. The huge Riverside complex, originally called Chew Park, was built between 1973 and 1975 and became the headquarters of the South West region of British Gas in 1976. It accommodated 400 staff, making it easily the largest employer in the town, and its size completely changed the appearance of that end of the town centre. After British Gas moved out, the block became home to various departments of B&NES Council until the new Civic Centre opened in 2015. “Go Great Western” Our first evening meeting of 2020 features a talk by Alan Freke on “The GWR Badminton Line”. This is not the story of a railway branch line but the history of the main line from Wootton Bassett to Patchway, which was built to give a direct link from London to the Severn Tunnel. It mentions the benefits of having a railway across your land if you happen to be the Duke of Beaufort! The talk will be on Monday January 20 at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, space permitting. Caroline Quentin with some of the staff at the St Peter's Hospice inpatient unit - she praised it as 'the beautiful tip of a huge iceberg'

Caroline hails hospice unit's great work A YEAR after the St Peter's Hospice inpatient unit was opened, the actress Caroline Quentin, who spearheaded the appeal to fund it, returned to say thank-you to the people of Bristol and the surrounding area for their support. The unit has helped more than 250 patients and families and 3,000 people in the community since it opened. Caroline was joined by the families of Mike Freeman, the first patient in the unit, and Marcus Batchen, who spent his last Christmas in the Bristol unit. Standing in the venue’s stunning lobby, Caroline said: “What is thrilling a year on is that this building and gardens are not only finished but it already feels like a place where you can enjoy time with the people you love. “I’m here to say that this place is a very

beautiful tip of a huge iceberg. It’s important that we recognise that most of the care of St Peter’s is out in the community. “The levels of service and care and expertise are exceptional, but that comes at a cost of £7.5 million per year. Thank you for all your support and keep it coming.” Father-of-four Mike Freeman from Westbury-on-Trym was the first patient in the new unit. At that point he was in the final stage of bladder cancer but his son Tim fondly remembers his father’s excitement as he came along the corridor in his wheelchair. “When someone first said the word ‘hospice’ I thought it sounded so final but it’s not in the way you’d imagine,” said Tim. “We were able to use the private rooms and so we spent many an evening here, enjoyed a curry and were able to relax

as a family in those final weeks. We were completely unaware of the support that St Peter’s Hospice can offer. They provided a drug programme and managed that from home, but when dad’s condition came to a point at which he needed a more controlled manner of delivery, St Peter’s Hospice brought him in. "It wasn’t just inviting him into the hospice, but inviting friends and family into the hospice too. “We are only too proud to come and support the charity on the anniversary of the opening. “We set up a tribute fund to dad and are keen to build that fund up.” For more details of the fund, visit www. stpetershospice.org.uk/tribute-for-mikefreeman-208/

Appeal over hit-and-run Anti-terrorism campaign POLICE are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to an incident where a store security guard was run over in Bristol as he tried to stop a suspected shoplifter. It happened on Church Road in St George on Thursday December 5 at around 9.30pm. A black Audi drove over a man in his 20s who had fallen in the road before leaving the scene. The victim, a security guard working for the Co-op, suffered significant injuries including breaks to his ribs and arm. The car has since been recovered and a 43-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident. If you can help the police with their investigation, please call 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5219281353.

OFFICERS from Avon and Somerset are supporting the latest counter terrorism policing campaign to help keep crowded places secure over the festive period. The campaign, called Project Servator, calls on the public and those who work in busy towns and cities to remain vigilant and report any concerns to staff, security or – in confidence – to counter terrorism police at www.gov.uk/ACT. Assistant chief constable Stephen Cullen said: “Project Servator deployments will be carried out across the force area – these are unpredictable deployments involving specially trained officers who turn up announced at various locations to provide the public with reassurance and to disrupt a wide range of criminal activity, including terrorism.”

The plaque commemorating the life of Iris Murdoch

Plaque tribute to a literary legend

Iris Murdoch, left, visiting the then headmistress of Badminton School, Beatrice May Baker. Below, young Iris in her schooldays

A BLUE plaque has been unveiled on a wall outside a Bristol school to mark the centenary of novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch. She studied at Badminton School in Westbury-on-Trym from 1932 to 1938, maintaining her links with the school and her former headmistress throughout her life, and returned to open the school art block in 1994. After studying at Somerville College, Oxford, she went on to become a celebrated writer and thinker, winning the Booker Prize in 1978 for her novel The Sea, The Sea. She is best known for her work about what it means to be a good person, morality, and the power of the unconscious. In 2008 The Times ranked her 12th in a list of 50 of the most important British writers since 1945. Every year members of the Badminton community honour her memory with a creative writing competition. A spokesperson from the Bristol Civic Society said: “We are delighted to celebrate this most important recipient of a blue plaque. Dame Iris Murdoch has an international reputation as a polymath. The plaque here is at the public gate and is in full view, and will be an inspiration to each generation at the school.” The plaque was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Jos Clark, who said: “I’ve taken this opportunity to read more about Iris and her belief system and I hope that many people will walk past here and think that they will read one of Dame Iris’s books too, and find out more about her life and contribution to Bristol.”

Mike takes us on a deep dive with the with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Mark Cawardine delivering his talk to more than 120 wildlife enthusiasts at the Space in Keynsham

T

uesday November 26 was a special fund-raising evening for Keynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust, writes chairman Dave Sage. More than 120 wildlife enthusiasts of all ages packed into the Space above Keynsham library to hear Mark Carwardine explain why we should: “Never, ever write a field guide!” Mark is an extraordinary individual; a zoologist, award-winning writer and TV presenter (notably presenting the Last Chance to See series with Stephen Fry). His particular passion is Cetaceans (in other words, whales, dolphins and porpoises) and he has recently released the second edition of his field guide to these remarkable (and in some cases, threatened) aquatic mammals. In a humorous and self-effacing talk, this personable man told us of the nearly six years spent travelling the world to obtain first-hand data for the guide, of missing five publishing deadlines, of waking up at night worrying that the shape of a beak-nosed whale was not drawn correctly, of reading more than 1,200 scientific papers on individual species, of poring over hundreds of artists’ drawings, deciding which ones to include in the guide; and much more. Not surprisingly, his knowledge of Cetaceans is extensive. His descriptions of some of their characteristics could make their own Guinness Book of Records. The Sperm whale record for holding its breath is 2 hours 18 minutes, and it can dive to more than 10,000 feet under the ocean, a depth that would crush us puny humans; a Bowhead whale killed by Inuit hunters in Northern Russia was calculated to be 211 years old (nobody knows how long they

can live for; this individual had its life cut short); Fin whales mass in their hundreds off the coasts of Antarctica to feast on an abundance of krill; the Blue whale – the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth – is the length of a Boeing 737 jet, and eats four tons of food per day. The list goes on… Mark described the ever-changing, dynamic nature of classifying any group of living organisms and of the huge challenges of studying them in the wild. In 1995, his original handbook contained 76 species of Cetacean. Since then, some new species have been found and some closely related groups have been

split into separate species. On the other hand, killer whales originally grouped as separate species have now been classified as 13 different “ecotypes” – all one species, but showing distinct characteristics within in each group. DNA technology is now used alongside morphological, behavioural and geographical range studies to help determine the ancestry and relationships of many species. The net result is that his new guide contains 90 different species. Sadly, that number is in danger of decreasing. The Yangtze river dolphin in China became extinct last year. record-breakers of the sea

California is down to about 10 individuals, partly as a result of being illegally trapped in gill nets used to catch Totoaba fish, which are also in decline as their meat is used in Chinese cuisine, the swim bladder a particular delicacy. Other endangered species include Hector’s dolphin, from New Zealand, and the North Atlantic Right whale. One species – the Perrin’s beaked whale – has never been seen alive, the only evidence of their existence being six bodies washed up on beaches. Similarly, the Peruvian beaked whale was initially only found in the fish markets of Peru – but live specimens have since been observed. After a break which enabled people to buy raffle tickets (with special thanks to all the local businesses and individuals who donated prizes) and enjoy a drink, Mark took part in a questionand-answer session, ably led by Martin Farrell, who possibly models himself on Andrew Marr, or Andrew Neil (but not Piers Morgan!) Audience questions were wide-ranging and challenging; at one point Mark quipped: “can’t you just ask me what my favourite whale is?” (answer: Narwhal). Does he feel spending more than $4 million to try to save the critically endangered Northern White rhino is justified? Yes – but only if it works. Some species have been rescued from the brink of extinction, including the Mauritius kestrel and the Madagascar pochard. Numerous ways were discussed to help reduce climate change and species decline. Mark feels that by making conservation of species a fundamental prerequisite of any new development, backed by strong government legislation worldwide, the declines seen in many wild populations can be slowed, even reversed. The pros and cons of ecotourism were discussed (well-managed, controlled ecotourism can be beneficial; otherwise it can be damaging); also considered was carbon offsetting by airlines, using the World Land Trust, whose work protects and restores carbon-rich wildlife habitats in the tropics. Mark vented his frustration at the naivety and ignorance of some people “in high places”,

Mark with Kathy and Martin Farrell. Right, a close encounter with Sirocco the Kakapo citing an example of people getting excited about a new machine which sucks carbon dioxide out of the air. As he pointed out, these machines already exist – they’re called trees! Mark’s final serious point was a chilling one; we have less than 20 years to put things right before potentially irreversible damage is done to our precious planet by continuing increases in industrialisation and population size. The evening ended on a light-hearted note as Mark showed a hilarious clip from a Last Chance to See programme. During filming of the critically endangered New Zealand parrot, the Kakapo, a tame bird called Sirocco, which has adopted a ranger station as its home, clearly found Mark’s head too similar to a receptive female parrot to resist attempting to mate with it. It took some effort to finally extricate the amorous bird from Mark’s head, leaving him covered in some serious “love

scratches”. Stephen Fry’s hysterical laughter alone is worth watching the clip for. To say the evening was a success is an understatement. The audience were entertained, inspired and thought-provoked and must have felt they got very good value for the £6 entrance fee. Superbly orchestrated by the indefatigable Kathy Farrell, the local group committee’s teamwork resulted in a net profit of £675.76, all of which will be donated to Avon Wildlife Trust. n Our first event of 2020 will be held on Friday January 10 - A Wilder Future for Avon – talk with Ian Barrett, Chief Executive, and Amy Coulthard, Director of Conservation. New Year Resolutions

Those New Year's resolutions that we make Have never particularly been my thing After all, just what is the point When we're surely not even willing..... To change the things that we do I mean, to go through life with a plan To leave absolutely nothing to chance Instead, I prefer to bumble through life And not make a song and dance, so..... Embracing the "see what happens" approach What's the point in making promises Not keeping them year after year It's predictable, boring and futile When broken by January the second, I fear..... Good intentions go straight out the window January is the month we pledge to ourselves To adopt new fads, put on a show We are happy to follow without asking Just like "Alfie" did all those years ago..... What's it all about? Why plan your year like a military campaign It's too exhausting, pointless and stressful Better then, that extra special event

Although, unable to make sense of it all..... This modern approach to false happiness Me, I'm making no plans or resolutions I'll sit back, face whatever comes my way It drives the family to total distraction Because I just saunter through life each day..... The reality is, nothing is ever achieved John Howlett Keynsham Creative Writers meet on the second and fourth Monday of the month. TWO years ago, Keynsham High Street was a bustling community - businesses optimistic, shoppers happy. The introduction of the one-way system changed all that. The long queues of traffic have sent shoppers elsewhere. Local optimism has gone. The days of free-flowing traffic have gone - all in the name of the absentee cyclist. All our children have now are longer and longer queues producing unknown levels of toxic fumes. Motorists need options and escape routes. Funnelling cars around one-way systems creates congestion and fumes. Another example is Bath’s Churchill Bridge. The closing of Green Park Road, again for the benefit of the absentee cyclist, has again produced the same result - longer queues and more pollution. Is it too much to hope for that B&NES will see that their traffic solutions cause far more harm than good? Allan Peters

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non Fiction

Lowborn: growing up, getting away and returning to Britain’s poorest towns Kerry Hudson reviewed by Hilary Cox from Midsomer Norton Library & One Stop Shop There are many stories about the great, the good, and the wealthy, but little from the perspective of someone “lowborn”: someone in poverty, dependent on councils and landlords for a home, a single parent family who struggles. Kerry’s style is accessible and honest, without being sentimental or laboured. The premise of this book is how someone who starts life lowborn manages to cross the educational, and therefore financial and cultural, divide when they go to university and obtain a degree. It is a biography of Kerry’s upbringing, interlaced with life today in communities where poverty, mental health and negativity are the staple diet. She doesn’t seek sympathy or pity as she recalls the desperate rooms she and her mum lived in, which they called home. Kerry weaves memories of her childhood, her extended family and the different schools she went to with revisits to the same towns today and chats with the locals. Kerry remembers long coach

journeys to another far-flung town in Scotland or England as her mum optimistically chased dreams of a better life but found it was invariably worse. I found this book was very readable and enlightening - throwing light on how other families live their lives through no fault of the own.

Lose Weight for Good Tom Kerridge Leap into 2020 with a great cook book from famous chef Tom Kerridge and start the New Year feeling healthier and fitter. Tom starts with a true statement – it is impossible to stick to a diet, in particular if the food is boring and doesn’t fill you up. So he has developed a book of recipes that he believes will help you lose weight and taste fab. So there is a rich chilli with tortillas, a simple beef pot roast and my particular favourite – baked doughnuts with sweet five-spice dust. Enjoy! Adult Fiction

Now We Shall Be Entirely Free Andrew Miller This is a beautiful piece of fiction from the author of the book Pure. to head out to the Hebrides, where he hopes to learn more about the local music. However on his tail is a vicious English corporal and a Spanish officer with a mission to catch up with him. Lacroix’s journey takes him along the Irish Sea from Bristol, to the crowded city of Glasgow to finally a beautiful, remote Scottish Isle. His journey leads to friendship, and even love, but freedom for Lacroix comes at a high price. This book is full of suspense but also enthralling and immersive. The period detail is very good and it’s a great read. Young Adult Fiction

The competition is free to enter, and the winners are decided by a panel of expert judges making site visits. The judges agreed that Mel showed ‘an impressive dedication to achieving the highest quality.’ They assessed him against stringent criteria based on technical standards. Mel’s leadership skills were also assessed, with the morale and teamwork shown on site taken into consideration. Mel was selected as one of 17 Seal of Excellence and regional winners from across the South West at the awards ceremony.

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Swimmers scoop gala medal haul

IT'S been another busy month of swimming galas for Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club with swimmers from all levels competing at galas up and down the UK. Over the weekend of December 7-8, Keynsham fielded a 46-strong team of swimmers at Millfield School Pool for the Millfield, Taunton Deane & Street December County Qualifier. With the Somerset ASA County Championship just weeks away, it was the last chance for athletes to gain County Qualifying Times (CQTs) to enable them to compete. Many gained the CQTs needed and the team took a total of 31 medals (nine gold, nine silver and 13 bronze). Full results: n Tom H (14): Gold (50m Breast, 100m Breast, 50m Back, 200m IM); Silver (100m Free); Bronze (100m IM, 100m Back, 50m Fly) n Lilly B (10): Gold (100m Breast, 200m Free); Silver (200m IM, 100m IM, 100m Fly) n Clayton B (9): Gold (200m Free, 100m Back); Silver (100m Free) n Alfie U (14): Gold (200m Breast); Silver (50m Breast) n Axel P (9): Gold (50m Back) n Lehana E (13): Silver (100m Back, 100m Fly); Bronze (100m IM) n Daisy O (11): Silver (100m Back); Bronze (200m Back) n Tom W (13): Silver (50m Back) n Reuben H (9): Bronze (100m Free) n Isaac J (9): Bronze (100 Breast) n Edward D (11): Bronze (100m IM) n Isobel G (12): Bronze (200m Free) n Sophie S (13): Bronze (50m Back) n Jess A (15+): Bronze (50m Fly) n Ella F (15+): Bronze (200m Breast) With a total of 731 team points, Keynsham were also awarded the Top Visiting Club prize. Keynsham also had swimmers competing on the same weekend at City of Bristol Aquatics Level 3 meet at Hengrove, and five of our performance swimmers (Georgia G, Jess L, Ella Rigall, Rhiannon Bowen and Jess Podger) competing at the 2019 Winter Nationals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. And finally, Siobhan

Jasper was multiple

Somerset county champion and South West regional champion, with breaststroke being his number-one stroke, but still managing to win in as diverse events as backstroke and IM. It was breaststroke that took him to the National Finals, where he won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke. His personal best for the 200m was 2:16.77, which he achieved when he swam in the open event in 2017. Jasper represented England and Great Britain in France and Croatia, where he picked up a gold (in the 200m breaststroke) and bronze medals, and learned a great deal about international swimming demands and expectations. Jasper said: “I am really excited to be working with Keynsham ASC, and very much looking forward to the challenge of working with swimmers across the whole club. “I enjoy seeing the passion of the youngsters and hope to be able to share my experience as a swimmer and a coach, and draw upon the skills I have learned

from the people around me in swimming, like Matt Puddy and my own dad.” n Keynsham have raised over the target amount of £1,500 for swimming blocks. The total needed for blocks is £4,500 and currently they have received £1,750 in sponsorship, £200 from Saltford C of E Primary School’s cake sale, £1,540 from crowdfunding and a grant of £500 from the Somerset ASA. That gives them a total of £3,990, just £500 shy of the total needed. The crowdfunding page is still open and any donations will be gratefully received. Visit www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/kasc to support. Or contact tanya. oliver@keynshamswimming. club to discuss sponsorship opportunities. Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club would like to wish all its swimmers, families, members and supporters a very Merry Christmas and an exciting New Year of swimming successes!

n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

Battling Keynsham RFC still struggle THERE are just the two games to report this month with two more scheduled before Christmas and those will appear in the February issue. On November 23, the Black and Ambers hosted Devonport Services at the Crown Fields. The home supporters were delighted when their team took an early lead from a converted try. That was to be the last joy for them though, as Keynsham were out-played throughout the match by a fitter, stronger and better drilled side. It was really men against boys and, although they never gave up, there were no chances to narrow the gap. There was the consolation of a late second try but that was that. A 38-12 defeat and five league points to the visitors, putting them back on top of the division. A losing bonus point was never on the cards after the first few minutes. On December 7 they travelled to Hornets RFC at Weston to play on their 3G pitch, not Keynsham’s favourite surface. But the lads gave a wholehearted effort throughout the 80 minutes. Both sides showed great willingness to play flowing rugby, and it was only the fact that both teams had superb defences that stopped this being a high-scoring try fest. Keynsham went into an early lead after five minutes courtesy of a Dean Weaver penalty, awarded for an off-side offence. Play ebbed and flowed but Hornets equalised after 16 minutes with a penalty from their full back when John Pearce was rather harshly

Keynsham in action against Devonport Services - but their opponents proved too strong to overcome penalised for a deliberate knockon. Once again play moved up and down the pitch frequently. On 25 minutes the Ks were guilty of letting the ball bounce when a penalty kick to touch failed, putting themselves under pressure close to their try line. The defence held but two more successive penalties followed at 30 minutes, the second of which was successful, putting the home side three points clear. The resulting kick-off did not go the

required 10 metres and from the scrum Hornets scored a try under the posts from their scrum-half. This was a smartly made and taken effort, but a soft seven points given away by the visitors. On the stroke of half-time, Keynsham got three points back by another successful Weaver penalty. The same offence cost the hosts a yellow card. Half-time score, a very creditable 13-9. With Hornets temporarily down to 14 players, Keynsham

edged ahead after six minutes, 13-16. Pearce went on a mazy break from inside his own half and, several phases later, Dan Moody thundered across the try-line; Weaver added the conversion. The return of the sin-binned player coincided with Hornets spoiling a lovely chance for a try. Ash Linton replaced the hard-working Joe Clements in the second row at this point. Hornets did get the try they wanted after 13 minutes when

for league points

More action from the match against Devonport Services

The Ks fought hard for their losing bonus against Hornets their right wing scored, but the conversion was wide. Joe Concannon nearly squeezed in for a try for Keynsham but was denied by good defence. Kieran Etheridge replaced Phil Harvey at this stage, in the front row. The visitors were under heavy pressure in their ‘red zone’ when Concannon shot away following an intercept. Hopes were quickly dashed as the ref had been playing advantage for a previous offence, and play was whistled back. With three minutes left Hornets got their third try, just as handbags were beginning to

fly some distance away from the action. The conversion failed and left the score at 23-16. The game ended with Keynsham pounding the Hornets try line, but to no avail. The lads put in a great shift and deserved their losing bonus point. With the forthcoming Thornbury game completing the first round of matches, the local side are ninth in the league, so some hard work is required in the second round of games. With St Ives having dropped out of the league, there is just the one home game for the first XV coming – January 11, North Petherton.
