Green-belt biogas bid opposed by council PLANS to convert food and farming waste into power at a green-belt site in Keynsham are being opposed by the town council. Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Ltd (REAL) wants to build an anaerobic digester plant at the former Queen Charlton Quarry in Charlton Field Lane. Bath and North East Somerset Council, which will decide on the planning application, has received hundreds of comments objecting to the proposals. And in its consultation response to B&NES, Keynsham Town Council explained why its planning and development committee had resolved to object to the plans. It is the third attempt to create a plant at the site – the previous ones being in 2014 and 2019 – and the town council said it had been in “support of a facility in principle” in the past. But it said that “this principle seems to have been broadened and extended beyond a reasonable level.” The council said it was concerned Turn to Page 2

about the “adverse visual impact on the green belt” and that there were “profound highways issues” to consider. Its response stated: “It appears that the applicant has failed to factor in the movement of vehicles leaving the site with products, nor have calculations of actual HGV movements generally and during harvest time been recorded accurately.” The town council reiterated the comments of B&NES Council’s transportation and highways department that “the applicant has failed to demonstrate that satisfactory access to the public highway can be achieved. “Highways are of the view that without further mitigation measures the development is likely to result in the introduction of HGVs on unsuitable roads.” The town council said “the impact that this will have on the route of HGVs through and around Keynsham is a factor of paramount importance in any decision.” It is also concerned that the plant’s processes would create run-off surface water on nearby roads, making them hazardous, especially in the winter. The town council feared that nearby residents would be affected by smells, dust and the noise of vehicles, particularly at harvest time with the delivery of maize used in the process. “In the past, local residents have already experienced the effect of this when maize was delivered to the site, when it was

in operation previously, with deliveries being made late into the night. Mitigation of these factors have not been addressed within the application.” The town council also said that site maintenance had not been addressed sufficiently. “The council has concerns the safety of the community of Keynsham may be at risk.” Whitchurch Village Action Group has also objected. It said: “The Charlton Road is unsuitable for the immense volume of HGV lorries required for the running of this huge complex, rendering the use of Charlton Road for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, cars users as dangerous. Quality of life for local residents will be adversely affected.” More than 600 comments objecting to the scheme have been lodged with B&NES, as well as 10 in support. Those in favour of the scheme say the plant would help reduce consumption of fossil fuels and create jobs. If approved, the plant would process 92,000 tonnes of crops and food waste a year to produce biogas, to generate electricity and supply the local grid. Permission for a plant that would have processed 25,000 tonnes a year was originally granted in 2014 but never put into action after the then owners, Resourceful Earth Ltd, went into administration. Revised plans submitted in 2019 by Resourceful Earth Anaerobic Ltd were later withdrawn after neighbours said the smell from the site, historically used for composting, made them feel “physically sick”.

Further details of the complaints process can be found on the Voice website, or can be obtained by contacting the Publisher. DHP, HPD, MNCH(REG), AfSFH

Goal! Oliver scores a City prize for his team A TALENTED young Keynsham footballer has used his skills to win shirts for his team. Oliver Carter-Lilley, aged 7, scooped the prize in a competition run by Bristol City FC and advertised on Robins TV. Entrants had to send in a video showing their footballing prowess. His proud mum Holly said: “My partner Danon Dagbo saw the competition advertised in the break of one of the Bristol City matches and wanted Oliver to enter the competition, and so he videoed his skills.” Oliver was filmed performing stepovers, volleying, and shooting into his five-hole target net – and was thrilled to find out he had won. The Chandag Infants School pupil received a prize of 14 Bristol City shirts for his team, Keynsham Town. Although he is only 7, he plays in the under-9s. His coach Leigh Collins said: “Oliver is a great kid. He lives and breathes football. He practises all of the time and is an absolute pleasure to coach. “He plays in a number of positions but I think his preferred position is on the left wing. Everyone at Keynsham under-9s is very proud of him and I know winning the

Parking area shut to public

MOTORISTS will no longer be able to use part of the Station Road car park in Keynsham from April 1. The closure affects the 44 spaces in the overflow section at the rear of the car park. The 36 spaces in the main area of the car park will not be affected. A spokesperson for Bath and North East Somerset Council told the Voice: “The unsurfaced overflow section of the car park has been used as an informal parking area with no bay markings. It will close to the public on April 1 and will remain closed subject to future funding being made available to resurface it.”

£3,000 for hall

Aimee's book creates a buzz in aid of NHS

REFURBISHMENT at Saltford Hall has been boosted by a £3,000 grant from the parish council. The council has given Saltford Community Association the money towards the costs of work in the main hall. The complete refurbishment – the first in more than 25 years – involves installing a new ceiling with better insulation, new dimmable LED lighting panels and a complete redecoration. The main hall will reopen in time for a blood donor session on Sunday May 2 and as a polling station on Thursday May 6.

A PUPIL at Saltford School has used her artistic talent to raise money for the NHS. Aimee, aged 7, has created an illustrated e-book called The Very Hungry Honey Bee. She was inspired in part by the Thursday claps for key workers and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a children’s picture book designed, illustrated and written by Eric Carle. Aimee said: “I loved it on a Thursday when everyone was out in their streets clapping on our key workers, so I thought why not write and illustrate a book that people could read to show their love and appreciation for our hardworking keyworkers. “It will also act as a little keepsake and a reminder of the tough times we’ve had and that it won’t be forever." The book has so far raised £755 for NHS Charities Together. Have your say on river bridge plans WESSEX Water is consulting with local people on plans to build a bridge across the River Avon to access Saltford Water Recycling Centre. Letters have been sent to explain the scheme and ask for comments, while the company has consulted with both Bath and North East Somerset Council and South Gloucestershire Council. Existing access to the Mead Lane site, which will be upgraded in the future, is difficult due to parked cars and flooding when river levels are high. A low bridge along the narrow route also affects access for some vehicles. Wessex Water plans to build a bridge to provide a connection to the A431, which runs through Swineford and Bitton, and will improve the approach to the water recycling centre. The scheme also proposes creating a footpath linking the A431 to the local public right of way network and the River Avon Trail.

Wessex Water is also planning to create wetland habitats and work with local wildlife groups to identify other measures. Alternative routes to the bridge have been explored, including a new 1.6-kilometre

road to connect to the A4, but the company says this would have a significant impact on the Avon Valley landscape and result in greater loss of green-belt land. The existing access road will remain open to ensure the site

can be reached from either side should there be the need, but there will be no through route for the public. Wessex Water will be submitting its planning application for the bridge in the coming weeks but has asked for feedback on the proposals. Anyone with comments can email them to saltford.access@ wessexwater.co.uk

Festival gets set to go mobile KEYNSHAM Music Festival is set to go on this move this year. Organisers have taken the “difficult decision” not to hold the event in the Memorial Park because of uncertainty surrounding future Covid-19 restrictions. So they are planning a mobile event instead – and are asking fans to save the date for September 5. Festival chairman Mike May said: “As a volunteer organisation, we cannot take the financial risk of having to cancel due to changes in government rules after we have committed to purchase all the necessary infrastructure - not to mention our commitment to performers, crew and traders.

“So instead, we plan to bring the festival to you! “Our hope for this year is to organise a Keynsham Mobile Festival - a procession of performances taking in as much of the whole town as we possibly can. There will be music of all sorts, dance, children’s

entertainment, and circus performances.” Mike said he hopes that those living on the route will hold their own family garden party and decorate it with bunting, as well as taking part in an arts trail. “We desperately hope that social-distancing rules will enable us to stop at certain points on the route. In any event, we will be totally reliant on the goodwill of the Keynsham community to ensure that everyone has a great, totally safe, enjoyable time. “In addition, we are hoping that we will be able to put on smaller events leading up to the big day.” Further announcements will be made as plans are finalised.

Find bargains in front gardens! The Great Saltford Front Garden Sale is returning next month. It will be held on Saturday May 8 and Sunday May 9, from 10am to 3pm. A map of participating gardens will be produced nearer the time. More than 90 took part in the last event. Sellers are asked to consider making a donation to Saltford Community Association for organising the sale. Last time more than £3,000 was raised for good causes. If you wish to take part, email events@saltfordhall.co.uk with your name and address. For more information and updates, search online for ‘Saltford Community Association’ and click on ‘SCA Events’ on its web page.

Fresh venture on the move

WARREN Fruit & Veg Ltd are a local family-run business sourcing and delivering quality fresh fruit and vegetables to homes and businesses in and around Keynsham, Saltford, Longwell Green, Willsbridge and Oldland Common. We began in 2020 when the pandemic hit. Initially, we started helping family and friends who were self-isolating to ensure they received fresh fruit and veg weekly. Word of mouth spread and we were asked to supply many others, so we set up our family business and are delighted with the great feedback we receive, not only about the quality of our produce but the great value for money we give and reliability of service. Our community is important to us and we want to ensure we give something back,

especially during these difficult times. For example, we donate fruit boxes to local schools and GP surgeries, fruit and veg to MacMillan Coffee Morning raffles, and gift vouchers to local businesses. And we offer a 10% discount to all NHS workers. We also have a close association with Keynsham Food Bank, offering weekly donations

of fruit and veg, and are so pleased we’ve been able to support so many families in and around Keynsham. Boost for rail station reopening hopes CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed a bid for funding to investigate the feasibility of opening a railway station at Saltford. The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has made the bid to the Department for Transport’s ‘Restoring Your Railway’ (RYR) Fund. WECA is seeking £50,000 towards the £70,000 cost of developing the business and feasibility case for opening a station at Saltford as part of the MetroWest project. MetroWest will provide halfhourly local train services across the Bristol-Bath sub-region. The Saltford study aims to establish whether the station is feasible, and if so, what the next steps should be. Its focus will include: l Assessing how effectively a new station would address traffic congestion on the A4 and improve connectivity at Saltford. l Evaluating the railway line’s capacity for a new station, given that services on the line have

Saltford station campaign supporters, from left to right, Councillors Chris Warren, Neil Butters and Duncan Hounsell changed since the last study. l Determining the signalling infrastructure required, and its cost. This was not done in previous studies. The WECA bid follows a vote by B&NES Council in October 2019 supporting the opening of a Saltford station. Councillor Alastair Singleton,

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

a Saltford ward councillor, said: “This is excellent news. This shows that the idea of a Saltford station is being taken very seriously by WECA.” The bid has also been backed by Saltford Parish Council and the Saltford Station Campaign - which have been actively supporting the reopening of

Saltford Station for many years – and by MP Jacob Rees-Mogg. Councillor Chris Warren, chair of the parish pouncil as well as the station campaign, said: “This bid is a strong, positive step towards the reopening of Saltford Station, potentially at its former site. “The cross-party and crossorganisational support from WECA, B&NES, and our MP for developing the business and feasibility case for opening a station at Saltford as part of the MetroWest project is greatly welcomed. “Saltford Parish Council and the Saltford Station Campaign view this as a significant step towards making the reopening of our station a reality.” The WECA bid makes clear that the development of a station would take at least five years if there was enough line capacity. And if the station was dependent on signalling enhancements, delivering the station would take at least 10 years.

Help us end the blight of garage break-ins

A

s many of you will know from various Keynshamrelated pages on Facebook, we continue to be blighted by thefts from garages and sheds. These appear to happen from late afternoon through the night. I have commented on a number of these posts requesting any CCTV or images of suspects to be forwarded directly to me at 3803@avonandsomerset.police.uk. This information is helping us in trying to identify the offenders. Someone reading this must also have information as to who the offenders might be. I would like us to pull together as a community in attempt to identify the offending people. If you have any information, you can report it directly to me on the above email address or contact our non-emergency number 101. If you want to do to remain anonymous, please contact Crimestoppers (crimestoppers-

with PC James Evans uk.org). Even the smallest bit of information could lead to the location of stolen property and the apprehension of offenders. We have seen the efforts offenders are making to find bicycles - climbing into gated gardens and forcing garage doors. If you have anything of value in your garage, please consider extra security, as you’d be surprised how easy it is to break in through a standard garage door. If possible, block your garage door with a vehicle to prevent access. We will be laying on

additional staff to combat these crimes. n Meanwhile, our day-to-day work continues, and this month we actioned a misuse of drugs act warrant in Keynsham - the warrant was positive. The investigation is ongoing but will have a positive outcome. The intelligence we get from the public is often the last bit of the puzzle we need to ask a judge for a warrant, so please keep the information coming. n Keynsham, and in particular the Meadows estate, has been suffering with antisocial behaviour from moped riders. We have been out on highvisibility patrols combatting this, and this month we have seized one moped for no insurance and issued others with Section 59 warnings for antisocial use. We will continue to deal with these matters as they arise. n I would like to thank you all for your support during this time.

The challenges we as a force have been facing in Bristol have been a big drain on resources across the force area. All suitably trained officers have been drafted in to help and this of course puts strain on our ‘normal policing resource’, with myself and other officers being called in from days off to support our colleagues. As I often have to remind people, the box of police staff is empty. During this operation, we have had support from a number of our neighbouring force areas and we are thankful for their help. n As we come out of the Covid restrictions, please be mindful that we are doing our utmost to keep everyone safe during this time and will still have to enforce the regulations as they change. So please keep an eye on the government website (www.gov. uk) to make sure that you are following the rules.

Food bank: Thanks for helping us cope with Covid demand

9

ADVERTISING FEATURE What do the Metro Mayor manifestos offer for Keynsham & Saltford residents?

View from Dan Norris, Labour Metro Mayor Candidate

The coronavirus crisis has been devastating for lives and livelihoods. But it has also shown us what matters most. People have come together through mutual aid groups, our key workers have been heroic, and we have rediscovered the value of local services and local green spaces. Keynsham Food Bank's warehouse at Marksbury KEYNSHAM Food Bank has seen a 60% rise in the number of people it has supported during the first 12 months of Covid-19 restrictions. As it approached the end of its fiscal year, the food bank said it had coped with the increased demand on its services thanks to the generosity of those making donations, through supermarket drop boxes and other sources. During the same period, the food bank has had to move its warehouse twice, finally settling at its current home in Marksbury. Project manager Alan Hale said: “It has been a very challenging time for us, but I am immensely proud of the volunteers who have worked extremely hard to ensure that we continued to deliver the service to those who needed our support. Also, a big thank-you to Keynsham and District Dial A Ride, who do the deliveries for us.” Since April 1 last year, the food bank has supported more than 2,000 people. Mr Hale said: “I am always at pains to make clear to people that food banks are not synonymous with benefits. And this year has reinforced that fact, as over 25% of those we have supported have been referred to us due to them being on a low income. “There are many families out there in our community who lead extremely hard lives, and it is heart-warming that the

community comes together to support and help them with their donations of food and money. “The sad fact is that any of us might one day find ourselves in distinctly different circumstances. The food bank and its volunteers are not judgemental.” The food bank hopes to return to its normal way of operating, with its three distribution centres open in July to receive clients to come and collect the food. For the time being, deliveries will continue, and when the centres open some deliveries may still be possible. In the meantime, the food bank does not anticipate a fall in demand. In fact, it believes there may be an increase, as the true figure of those likely to be out of work becomes clear as the lockdown starts to wind down. There are non-perishable food donation drop boxes at Tesco in Keynsham and Saltford, Waitrose, Saltford Hall when open, Pensford Post Office and Chew Magna Coop. The food bank covers Keynsham, Saltford, the Chew Valley and the neighbouring part of South Gloucestershire. Anyone wishing to make a financial donation to the food bank can do so via sort code 60-12-11, account number 26641860. If any group wishes to receive a talk about the food bank, currently via Zoom, that can be arranged by emailing keynshamfoodbank@gmail.com.

In our piece about Keynsham’s poorhouses last month, we mentioned the row of such houses built by the parish of Queen Charlton in the seventeenth century. The terrace of six dwellings was at the junction of Redlynch Lane and Charlton Road and is today known as Poplars Cottage. This pleasant scene is from a painting by Claude Gilliard and shows the poorhouses at harvest time, perhaps about 1930. It is reproduced by kind permission of Don Ogg, who has the original.

POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER ELECTIONS Voters will have the chance in May to choose the next Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner. The PCC is responsible for the effective policing of the region, drawing up a budget – including the annual precept charged to council tax payers – setting priorities for the force through a police and crime plan and holding the chief constable and officers to account for delivering it. Since its creation in 2012 the post has been held by independent Sue Mountstevens, who is standing down. Among those vying to replace her is John Smith, who is also standing as an independent and was Ms Mountstevens’s chief executive before she made him her What are your top three priorities for policing in Avon and Somerset? Kerry Barker: Successful policing depends upon the gathering of local intelligence by local police officers. My priorities are: to strengthen community policing with more officers who live and work in the areas for which they are responsible; stop the closure of police stations; bring back and strengthen specialist detective teams, such as burglary teams and sexual assault teams. Each will have the aim of improving the welfare and safety of women. Cleo Lake: Trust – the police need to reflect the communities they work for. This requires active recruitment among under-represented groups, and supporting recruits through challenges. Prevention – reform of drug laws, which create needless criminals and victims – is required. Focus should be on cybercrime, which denies many their savings, and road safety, including pavement parking. Despite budget pressures, the public deserve value-for-money policing and for their priorities to be met. Heather Shearer: Catch and prosecute burglars and scammers – currently only 8% of burglars are detected; Invest in responsive neighbourhood police teams so they can truly be part of their communities; Work more effectively with partner organisations across the county to target drugs and knife crime. Focusing on crime prevention and building safer communities would

be my way to achieve these three things. Mark Shelford: Reassure residents the police are there for them: increase visible policing and work with communities to increase their resistant to crime; Refocus the police on fighting crimes people care about by freeing officers up from nonpolicing tasks; Rebuild morale on the frontline: overhaul training and cut paperwork to allow police more time on our streets. Boost Special Constable numbers, review the use of police buildings, and investigate the efficiency of the current PCC office. John Smith: As the only independent candidate, I will answer only to local residents, not to party politicians in Westminster. If elected, I will make keeping everyone safe and secure my main priority, and my first focus will be on: Supporting the police to enforce Covid-19 regulations appropriately so we can get back to living normally as soon as possible; Protecting the most vulnerable in society, including children and victims of domestic violence; Tackling burglary, knife and drug crime including County Lines.

What prior experience do you believe qualifies you for the job? Cleo Lake: I have wide experience in public life. Current Bristol councillor, Avon Fire Authority since 2017. Chair – Diversity Inclusion Cohesion Equalities,

and People & Culture committees. Former Chair of St Paul’s Carnival and Independent Advisory Group. Bristol Lord Mayor, 2018/19. Heather Shearer: I scrutinise the PCC as vice chair of the Police and Crime Panel and protect communities as a Safer Somerset Partnership member. I am not a career politician. I worked in many jobs so see the world from many viewpoints. Mark Shelford: I was a soldier for 30 years, working with police around the world to fight crime and establish peace in diverse communities. As a councillor and member of the region’s Police and Crime Panel I’m clear what local police need. John Smith: I have almost 12 years’ experience as a leader in Avon and Somerset police governance. I led the PCC’s team for eight years; in 2020 I was appointed Deputy PCC to help meet the challenges of policing during the pandemic. Kerry Barker: As a criminal barrister working in Avon and Somerset, with 50 years’ experience, I know how budget cuts and local strategic decisions impact the ability of police officers to do their work; to detect crimes and to keep people safe.

How will your approach to the role differ from the current PCC’s? Mark Shelford: I know how to lead and motivate a uniformed

service, and how to properly consult and engage with voters. Our police do a difficult job with courage and skill: they need leadership that understands their and the community’s needs. John Smith: As well as continuing current priorities such as road safety and anti-social behaviour, I will prioritise more areas that local people have told me need additional resources such as cyber crime and fraud, rural crime and business crime. Kerry Barker: I will change strategies to make local policing the priority; stop closures of police stations; emphasise the welfare and safety of women and move back to specialist teams of detectives. The soaring levels of violent and sexual offences are unacceptable. Cleo Lake: I would be highly visible. I would like to work more closely with unions and Independent Advisory Groups to inform from a community perspective. I would support setting up both a youth and African Heritage IAG. Heather Shearer: I would ask difficult questions of the Constabulary and partners but also build effective working relationships. My decisions would be evidence-based but you have to take people with you, especially when the decisions are not what everyone wants to hear. l The election takes place on May 6, 2021

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

W

hen you are buying goods in bulk, whether it’s a sack of potatoes or a load of coal, the ability to weigh your purchase is a key part of the process. Shops still have scales for domestic purchases and, less visible but widely used, the weighbridge is the industrial equivalent. Most weighbridges are within factory or quarry premises although some are available for public use. They became commonplace in the 19th century so that turnpike trusts could charge carters by weight. Small public weigh-houses were often sited in town centres but there can have been few places where a weighbridge occupied a more prominent position than Keynsham. Situated in the middle of the junction of Bath Hill and the High Street, the little gothic-style weighhouse is a prominent and attractive feature of many photographs and postcards of the town taken in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Who used the weighbridge? It was installed by the Keynsham Gas Company, presumably when they built the gas-works at the foot of Dapps Hill in 1857. The raw material for manufacturing town gas was coal, and this would have been delivered in carts of varying size, so the company needed to know exactly how much they were buying. We don’t know why the weighbridge was located in the High Street rather than on the premises. It may have been due to lack of space on the factory site or – and this is pure speculation – it may have been intended to be used by others, as a public facility. A by-product of gas production is coke and this could have been sold

When weighbridge took pride of place

Above, this photograph shows the weighing platform in front and is dated 1897. Left, the Dramway weigh-house at Avon Wharf and weighed on the weighbridge. The device was a large balance with a system of levers underneath connecting the platform in the road to a scale inside the weighhouse or office. In 1923 the Keynsham Urban District Council decided that its long-held ambition to provide the town with a public convenience should be implemented, and the site of the weighbridge was one of two considered.

The gas company offered to sell its site for £100 if the council would remove the weighbridge to the gas works at Dapps Hill. This never happened but a few years later the weighbridge became redundant when, about 1928, the gas works closed. Demand from the new Fry factory required a new main from Bristol, and the Bristol Gas Company bought out the small Keynsham concern.

The weighbridge stayed in place until June 1930, when it was sold to Keeling’s Lime Works for £50, to be installed at their site. Of course, not all local transport was by road and on the other side of the River Avon, opposite the later Polysulphin soap factory, was the wharf at the terminus of the Avon and Gloucester Railway, commonly known as The Dramway. The loaded coal wagons travelled down to the wharf by gravity and the empties were horse-drawn back to the collieries. Whilst all signs of the rails, turntables, cranes and so forth have disappeared long ago, several buildings survive. One of these is the weigh-house, built about 1831 and shown in the photograph. As you look at this from the Keynsham side, the track would have passed in front of the window and a length would have been fixed to a weighing platform, similar to the one in Keynsham, and the operator would adjust the balance and read the scale inside the building. The wagon would then be moved on and its load tipped into a waiting boat. One imagines that this would have been used more intensively than the one in the High Street, with more than 100 tons of coal per day being shipped out in 1832 for example. A very similar building can be found at the Londonderry Wharf, a mile downstream. Weighbridge history is something of a niche interest, but if this has whetted your appetite, we are only a few miles from the site of the canal weigh-house at Midford. This is believed to have been one of only four in Britain where canal boats, complete with cargo, were lifted and weighed. Search the internet to discover more! Richard Dyson

From shielding to summit for Hannah A HEALTHCARE worker from Keynsham who has been shielding from Covid-19 for 12 months is to take part in a virtual challenge to climb Mount Everest. Hannah Totterdell will be raising funds in support of her colleagues and patients at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath. She is set to take on The Forever Friends Appeal’s Sofa to Summit virtual challenge, which runs for 61 days from April 1 to May 31. She has already raised £65 and, like all participants, has pledged to raise at least £100 to help the charity provide support to areas where it is needed most. Hannah, a receptionist at the RUH audiology department said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge as it has already given me something to aim for and look forward to, which is so important for our mental health these days. “I have a condition called rheumatoid arthritis, and the medication I take for this disease weakens my immune system. Therefore I’m classed as ‘extremely clinically vulnerable’, meaning I’ve been at home for the most part of the last year and don’t get much exercise. “The challenge is ideal for me, as it’s something that I can do to raise funds for the RUH and can do it all from home whilst

“I am very proud to work for the NHS and I have seen first-hand the impact donations have made to our hospital. “It's been more important than ever in the last year to be able to continue offering our service to our patients and make sure they can hear well, especially as people have to rely on telephone conversations and video calls when they can't see their friends and family.” So far, the charity has more than 100 people set to climb the height of Mount Everest - which is 8,848 metres - using their own stairs or outdoors, and it would like to encourage more people to sign up. Karlie Evans, events and community officer, said: “Anyone who raises £100 or more will receive an exclusive expedition patch and you can complete it any way that suits you – walking, running, cycling – just ensure you are following the social-distancing guidelines at that time.” Teams as well as individuals can take part and complete Everest’s 8,848 metres collectively. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

n NEWS Can you help vaccine study? RESEARCHERS at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust are inviting volunteers to take part in a study looking at whether booster Covid-19 vaccines could be given at the same time as flu vaccines. While there are vaccines that have been approved to protect against Covid-19 in the UK, it is not yet known whether further booster doses may be required to give continued protection, and how giving boosters might fit in with the seasonal flu jab programme. The study will involve people aged 18 years or over who have received their first Covid-19 vaccination and are awaiting their second dose. Each participant will receive the second dose of the same Covid-19 vaccine they originally received. For more information, visit https://comflucov.blogs.bristol. ac.uk/

I

was recently made redundant from my Job. This was a job I enjoyed, a job that paid my bills and supported my family. Suddenly this security and source of income had been taken away from me, and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. I had hit a dead end. Have you ever felt like that? As a Christian and leader at One Church Keynsham, I love helping people discover Jesus and the life, hope and future I believe he has for them. What we see in the Bible is that dead ends are often new beginnings in disguise! The greatest of these new beginnings is Easter. Easter is the most significant date in the Christian calendar. It’s a celebration of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The truth is, if you can disprove the resurrection, the rest of Christianity is muted. The resurrection is the foundation of everything we believe. It is the reason we can have hope in every dead end. Easter is Jesus doing for humanity what humanity could never do for itself. The cross is how God showed his love for his creation. By dying on the

cross and overcoming death, he was able to give us hope and life beyond the one dead end we all share - the grave. Maybe you have experienced some dead ends and disappointing moments like I have. Maybe you have questions about the meaning of life. I want you to hear this today… It may seem like a dead end, but it doesn’t have to be! One reason people tell me they struggle to have faith is because they think that, to be a believer, they have to live a life free of doubt, fear or mistakes. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. If it were, I would be unqualified to be writing to you now. Faith is not the absence of these things. Faith is the means to overcome them. Christians are empowered to live by faith, not fear, because of the hope of Easter. If you could do with some faith or are in a dead-end situation and would like a different perspective, or even someone to pray with, there are churches all over Keynsham with people who are on this journey and would love to help.

A MUSEUM showing the history of Willsbridge Mill and nature reserve is set to open later this month. The visitor attraction in Longwell Green will include a working replica water mill turbine that can be activated by pressing a button. And a timeline will show the history of the site from Saxon times until the modern day. The project to replace the old museum – just a few dated display boards – was funded by £10,000 from the government Culture Recovery Fund. The mill itself was built in 1712 as an iron mill, then a grain mill, but the building hasn’t been used as a mill since the 1960s following the great flood in the local area. Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh (WMCR), a group of volunteers, has been working for the past seven years to regenerate the main mill buildings and barn. Also within the new museum, colouring and activity tables will be set up for children once

Some of the museum exhibits restrictions allow. It is hoped the mill’s onsite forest school, which started last autumn but was forced to stop when Covid restrictions were ramped up, will reopen again soon. A gift shop has been created alongside the museum. Initially the museum and gift shop will be open whenever the café is open, expected to be at weekends initially once lockdown restrictions permit. he clocks have gone forward, and we can all feel the benefits of more daylight. Our vulnerable members of society have been vaccinated against Covid-19, and this month – finally – we can meet up with friends and family again. I don’t know if it’s because spring is in the air, but I’ve been craving good news recently. Each time I read something positive that’s happening somewhere in the world, my heart gives a little leap. We all need those glimmers in the dark, to give us hope that things are getting better. Here, I offer my fellow Keynsham residents just a few of those rays of hope. The common crane hasn’t lived or bred in Britain since King James was on the throne. Thanks to a decade-long conservation effort led by the RSPB, there are now 200 birds living in the UK – most of them in the South West. Parish council tax increase SALTFORD Parish Council has increased its council tax precept by 10% for 2021-22, from £34,838 to £38,322. This means an average Band D property in Saltford will pay a parish precept of £21.08 per year, an increase of £1.74. This makes Saltford’s precept the third lowest for a Band D property in B&NES, out of 50 precepted areas (excluding Bath itself). The increase will help rebuild council reserves following Covid-19 spending and help it meet community need arising after the pandemic.

Mid Life Guide to Financial Freedom Do some or all of the following statements apply to you? Are you: • A business owner or senior professional? • Stretched by having to support elderly parents and your children? • Looking forward to a future where your work aligns more with your values and preferred lifestyle? If you’re over 40, and don’t want to work full-time until state retirement age, this article is for you. Whether you want to retire early or reduce your hours to achieve a balanced working lifestyle, planning (starting now) is the key to achieving this.

Health and Wealth Retirement is made fulfilling when enjoyed alongside good health. Remaining healthy in later life is not a given, and COVID has leant a stark perspective on this. A personal health plan alongside a retirement plan can make long-held dreams of a life after work a reality. Wealth Planning You may have spent much of your working life making money. But as you get older it becomes more important to protect what you have. A combination of Wills, Powers of Attorney and inheritance tax planning can protect your wealth, to pass-on efficiently, and to whom you choose, even if you die first and your partner re-marries.

Retirement Planning This should be your number one priority. In the same way you have a business plan, you also need a personal strategic plan. With guidance from a financial planning expert, it may entirely be realistic to bring forward your retirement or semi-retirement date by several years. But as each year passes, the retirement planning window narrows, so it’s important to act now.

Summer of disruption for passengers TRAIN passengers in Keynsham face disrupted services this summer while work takes place to upgrade tracks near Bristol Temple Meads. Replacement services and closed platforms will become a feature for travellers and commuters over eight weeks from July 10 to September 3. Services through Keynsham and Filton Abbey Wood are affected most but there will be five days when all services are disrupted. A Network Rail spokesperson said: “This summer we’ll be replacing the tracks at Bristol East Junction, on the approach to Bristol Temple Meads station from London. “Much of the track and engineering components were laid in the 1960s so are in need of replacement. Putting in a brand new set of tracks will mean fewer faults and less delays. “We’re also going to change the layout of the tracks and add a new line into the station, too. “This will allow trains to enter and exit the station more flexibly, meaning less delays waiting for platforms and the ability for more trains to use the station.” The spokesperson said as much work as possible has already been completed to reduce disruption for passengers and

Train services through Keynsham will be affected by work to upgrade tracks residents, cutting it from 12 weeks to eight over the summer. “While we undertake this engineering work, Bristol will remain open. However, some trains will be diverted and others will be replaced by buses, and we encourage passengers to plan ahead and check before they travel while this work takes place.” A GWR spokesperson said the improved track layout would increase the station’s capacity and enable more train services to be added in the future. They said the operator would continue to run trains where possible although there

may be an amended timetable and that bus replacement services would be put on where required. According to GWR’s website, the disruption will affect the following lines and dates: l Bristol Temple Meads to Filton Abbey Wood – Saturday July 10 to Friday August 6. l Bristol Temple Meads to Filton Abbey Wood/Keynsham – Saturday August 7. l All services via Bristol Temple Meads – Sunday August 8. l Bristol Temple Meads to Filton Abbey Wood/Keynsham – Monday August 9 to Friday August 13. l Bristol Temple Meads to Keynsham – Saturday August 14 to Monday August 30. l All services via Bristol Temple Meads – Tuesday August 31 to Friday September 3. He said the first phase of work on Temple Meads’ new eastern entrance would also start this summer, while the larger project for the station includes a new roof, canopies and platforms.

Clearing the way for a wonderful walking route EFFORTS are being made to establish a walking route in Keynsham – linking both sides of the A4 bypass - for people to enjoy. A couple have cleared a ‘missing link’ in the route - an overgrown section of railway path near their home in Dryleaze - in the hope that it can be maintained by the town council so the whole route can remain accessible. Denise Bruton, who began the clearance project with her husband Jeff at the start of February, said: “We first had to clear an entrance from the stile which is in the field at the bottom of Dryleaze road. “The stile leads the walker under the railway, and then the railway pathway turns to the left along the side of the railway, up a slight slope and meets up with the very bottom of The Avenue, where the ‘Public Footpath’ sign is situated. “It then leads the walker over the bypass and into the rugby fields, and along the public footpath at the back of the fields, which then leads you onto Durley Lane.” The area they have cleared – sandwiched between the railway line and the bypass – is about 250 yards long and 10 feet wide. A neighbour who has been in contact with the town council about the possibility of the railway path being maintained has received some “favourable” responses. The couple have also been in touch with a public rights of way inspector, who has suggested they could apply to have the path recognised – meaning it would be council-maintained. Denise said: “To us it seemed, if the railway path was reopened, it would make a nice figure-ofeight walk. And if the locals are made aware of it, I’m sure it will be used much more.” Denise added: “Before the Keynsham bypass was constructed in the 1960s, the path was the bottom of Poolbarton Lane, but when the bypass was built the lane was cut in half. “Originally it was an access road/path used by the farmer to get his cattle and sheep from one field to another. “My husband and his older brother both worked for the farmer in their early teens for pocket money. They drove cattle and sheep along the path as well as driving a tractor along it. “The path was more of an old stone track than a tarmac road, but most definitely used by the locals of the Somerdale estate as it was quick access to the High Street, and for those children who went to Broadlands School, as well as quick access to the Crown pub and rugby ground facilities.” “In the last 10 to 15 years it had become overgrown with little use and in the last six to eight years became completely overgrown with brambles and several fallen trees.” Denise and Jeff decided to tackle the path as they both felt in need of a lockdown project. Denise said: “I’m sure our

One suggestion is that the speed limit on that section can be reduced and that signs can be put up warning drivers of pedestrians.

n METRO MAYOR ELECTIONS In May voters in South Gloucestershire, Bristol and B&NES get to choose their next Metro Mayor. The boss of the West of England Combined Authority, or WECA, is in charge of coordinating the region’s transport, housing jobs and skills policy and will oversee the spending of more than £1.1 billion over the next 30 years. The first Metro Mayor, Conservative Tim Bowles, is standing down and, while nominations were still open as the Voice went to print, the main political parties had already announced their contenders for the post. 1) What are the three biggest issues facing the region? Dan Norris: Jobs, climate change and housing. The pandemic has exacerbated the need for effective leadership. It’s not good enough to have money to support our High Streets languishing in the Metro Mayor’s bank account. We can’t wait any longer to take action on climate change and we need more affordable homes. I have a vision for a green recovery, building a society where we value what’s truly important.

Samuel Williams: Jobs, Jobs and Jobs! Our region is full of opportunity; as we recover from the impacts of Covid, following the tremendous vaccine roll-out, I will connect all communities across the West of England with the opportunity to secure our future progress. I will invest over £100 million over the next four years to secure the recovery of our skills, training and business. In addition, I will invest in our transport network with new services and build homes for the future. Stephen Williams: First, a recovery from the twin economic shocks of Covid and Brexit. I will lead a recovery that is green and socially just, setting up a Centre for Green Technology Excellence and using the skills budget to make sure everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Second, putting more oomph and vigour behind plans to revolutionise our bus and train networks and to enable safe cycling. Third, a plan to build socially balanced new

the quality of life in their neighbourhoods.

Jerome Thomas: Obviously our recovery after Covid – we need to support communities and businesses to rebuild and adapt, ensuring that we are creating jobs that have a future. To protect the climate, we need to build homes in places with good local services and transport links which allow people to get around quickly without needing to use their cars. And for our well-being as well as the environment, we must protect and improve our green spaces and wildlife areas.

Dan Norris: I’ll be a jobs-first mayor, holding a jobs summit in my first 100 days in office and launching my Green Recovery Plan. I’ll set out plans to double investment in affordable housing, shifting resources to support councils and housing associations.

2) If you win the election, what would your first action be? Samuel Williams: It is vital that the mayor works with Government not against it. Once in post, I’ll pick up the phone to the Prime Minister and Chancellor to secure their support for the region – and it’s a call they’ll take. Stephen Williams: I have a detailed manifesto for transformative change in the West of England, on my website at www.stephenwilliams.org. uk. I would run through my top priorities with all the staff of the regional authority, setting out milestones for action. Jerome Thomas: I would meet with local town and parish councils to hear what their priorities are and how we could work together to improve

3) What prior experience do you believe qualifies you for the job? Stephen Williams: To be successful, this major role needs a mayor with deep knowledge of both business and government. I was a small business consultant before becoming a Bristol MP and then Minister for housing and local government. Jerome Thomas: I’ve had a long career in business and been a city councillor for six years. I’ve lived in this region most of my life. Above all, I know how to create a realistic plan bringing people together, whatever their politics. Dan Norris: I’ve lived and worked locally all my life as an NSPCC trained child protection officer, an MP and Environment Minister, and I’ve run my own businesses. I’ve got a record of securing jobs and investment. I’m a children’s charity trustee. Samuel Williams: As an international business and charity leader, this is the chance to recover with a mayor who embodies

4) How would you raise the profile of the Metro Mayor and WECA? Jerome Thomas: First, I want to do a good job for the region and deliver a solid plan with communities at its heart. Second, I will stand up for the West of England and secure more funds and local control of services. Dan Norris: I’ll be a visible, active mayor holding regular Town Hall meetings. I’ll win more funding and push for more powers for our region. With strong leadership, I’ll ensure the West of England is a key part of the national conversation. Samuel Williams: Having led an organisation that works with some of the world’s biggest brands, I know how to grow our profile. With Conservatives at the top levels of Government I am well connected, with a region full of talent. Stephen Williams: I’d stage a Meet the Mayor roadshow around all the region’s towns and villages and in the distinct communities of Bath and Bristol. I would use my experience to deliver my ambitious plans and win great deals from Westminster.

Work is under way installing the education facility, which will welcome students in September 2021. It will comprise two film studios, a screening lecture space, computer suite, games lab, darkroom and specially designed creative space, where students can develop ideas. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma director, states: “We’re very excited to be located at the Tobacco Factory - what a great place to live, learn and tap into the opportunities afforded by the Bristol creative industries.” The new degrees have been accredited by Bath Spa University, whose Head of School of Creative Industries and board member of Bristol Creative Industries, Dr Susan McMillan, states: “I am a huge supporter of boomsatsuma. They are reaching parts that universities and other colleges cannot reach.” Freya Billington is the course director of boomsatsuma’s two new BA (Hons) Filmmaking degrees specialising in production and post-production. She says: “In keeping with boomsatsuma’s ethos, this degree has been designed alongside our industry partners to specifically

Teaming up to create wildflower meadow

KEYNSHAM in Bloom is to embark on an exciting new project in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society, which is supplying project funds and the help of an outreach support officer. We also thank Keynsham Town Council for granting permission and applying for additional funding for this project and other floral elements to enhance this location, as part of the town’s entry into South West in Bloom. This year will see the development of a wildflower meadow in Keynsham Cemetery. Initially, we will mark out the location and undertake bio blitz research sessions to identify the flora on site. It is hoped we will have experts from Avon Wildlife Trust to support us with this part of the project. In the meantime, we will call for the help of local residents to plant wildflower seeds, care for and grow these on for planting out in the autumn. Our RHS support officer, Gavin Hardy, has given us guidance as to the type of plants to grow, and we will buy the seeds and equipment shortly, for distribution to those who wish to get involved. Gavin will also run online workshops on the best way to plant the seeds and care for the plants as they grow. If you are interested in getting involved,

Do you struggle to read texts?

Above, tubs and troughs will be planted again. Left, the Pocket Park project needs financial support please send a message with your details to Dawn at Keynshaminbloom@icloud.com and we will send you information on how to get your seeds. n Over the next few months, we will also be out and about planting up our tubs and troughs on the High Street, Temple Street, Chandag Road, Longmeadow Drive and Queens Road. Regular working party sessions at the Pocket Park are also planned to get it into tip-top condition for judging in July. All the above projects will be undertaken in a socially distanced manner.

n For any companies out there wishing to financially support our Pocket Park project or In Bloom itself, the following items need funding: New high-viz jackets, litter pickers, Hammerite paint and materials for railing painting, a bird bath, and the purchase of roses and shrubs. Any support will be very much appreciated. n If you have any questions about our projects or want to get involved, email us at Keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or drop a note with your contact details through the letter box of Keynsham Town Council (on Temple Street). n BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

A

nother record-breaking audience, of 113 screens, enjoyed an outstanding Zoom presentation to Keynsham Group Avon Wildlife Trust, about an exciting project in an area of outstanding natural beauty only an hour’s drive from Keynsham, writes chairman Dave Sage. The speaker was the knowledgeable, charismatic and inspiring Dr Cat McNicol, conservation project manager of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and manager of the Forest of Dean & Wye Valley pine marten project. This is one of many projects across the UK attempting to reintroduce native keystone or indicator species back into areas from which they have become extinct, also including beavers, white-tailed eagles and ospreys. The pine marten is a member of the Mustelid family, which also includes badgers, otters, stoats, weasels and polecats. It is unique as the only arboreal (tree-dwelling) Mustelid in the UK, where it builds dens in tree cavities, and disused squirrel dreys or raptors’ nests. Its name is something of a misnomer because although they do inhabit pine and other conifers, they are specialists of mosaic habitats, including open, mixed deciduous woodland, scrub and tussock grassland. They are omnivores and feed mainly on voles, but they also predate several other species, including grey squirrels, cavity nesting birds and their eggs, unprotected domestic poultry, and pheasants.

Pine martens come back to the forest Our next online talk is Secret World - a journey back to the wild with Jamie Kingscott, on Friday April 9. The vision of Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset is to prevent wildlife suffering, with the aim of returning every sick and injured animal to the wild. Ecologist Jamie, who works as their release co-ordinator, will talk about the trials and tribulations of how the organisation achieves that goal. Jamie grew up in Keynsham and now travels across the county and beyond getting rehabilitated animals back to the wild. To join the talk, visit keynshamawt.org/whats-on, email xxx keynshamawt@gmail.com or call Kathy on 07850 508702. For this reason, they have been subject to much persecution in the past, leading to declines and extinction. They also have a sweet tooth, and are partial to bilberries, strawberries and honey.

Cat went into fascinating detail about the process of reintroduction. Pine martens are extremely difficult to breed in captivity, so all 20 animals released into the Forest of Dean in 2016 (in

addition to the 51 released in midWales from 2015-17) were taken from healthy, thriving populations in Portsoy, NE Scotland, still their UK stronghold. Using bait consisting of peanuts, raisins, jam and raw egg, the animals were lured into wire cages, anaesthetised, examined by a vet, and those too old, too young or unhealthy were returned to where they were caught. The most suitable males and females were fitted with a radio collar, then transported overnight, an exhausting 10-12 hour journey, to the Forest of Dean, before being released into holding pens. After five days (to allow stress hormone levels to return to normal), the cage doors were left open, and the martens made their way into the forest. Monitoring the released animals has been crucial in finding out their distribution, behaviour, breeding and success rate. This includes radio tracking (much more reliable than GPS tracking) for 100 days intensively, always at night (pine martens are nocturnal); scat (poo!) records; and camera trap monitoring. The latter sometimes picks out the unique chin/chest markings, enabling Cat to identify individuals from records. Although it is too early to be sure, indications are that the animals have settled in well, the population is stable and increasing, and there is little evidence of conflict with landowners or local residents. We all felt that, with more people like Cat, our native wildlife is in safe hands. Everyone certainly got their money’s worth, as did Avon Wildlife Trust. Another £400 raised, taking our annual donation to over £2,000. As our tireless Zoom organiser Kathy Farrell noted: “Not bad for a lockdown year!”

Enchanting April is here! THERE'S a lot to like about April. Even her showers seem pleasant and manageable compared to the winds and pouring rain of the winter that preceded. Things are popping up everywhere you look. The trees are back in bud, the green is returning. All of a sudden, there are flowers and potential flowers everywhere. The woodland floors are carpeted with primroses, bluebells and wild garlic. The spring flowers are in peak gorgeousness – daffodils may be fading but the

first signs of blossom are with us. Look out for the blossom of blackthorn this month followed closely by hawthorn, with their cascades of small white and pink flowers, shining like beacons across the landscape. Wild flowers - daisies, buttercups and dandelions - also grace us with their presence again. The flowers bring the insects, the insects feed the birds, and the circle of life continues. And this month we can look forward to welcoming the long-

Blackthorn in blossom in Stockwood Vale distance avian travellers from Africa, swallows and house martins (with swifts also arriving at the end of the month), as they join our more resident birds currently singing loudly from the trees

Bus network of the future TRANSPORT chiefs have revealed how a rapid bus network would work in Bristol and link to outer areas such as Hicks Gate at Keynsham. The system will be based on a central network of interchanges where passengers hop on and off, while mini-orbital buses serve outer suburbs. Bristol City Council strategic city transport service manager Adam Crowther said that the bigger plans were 10 to 15 years away but the rapid bus network would come first to underpin mass transit. He said the medium-term vision was for passenger waits of less than five minutes on an anticlockwise circular stopping at Broadmead, city centre, Bristol Bridge, Redcliffe, Temple Meads, Old Market and Cabot Circus. Mr Crowther told the growth and regeneration scrutiny commission: “The idea of the scheme is that we will have highquality, fast, reliable services that are almost fully segregated from general traffic, always in bus lanes apart from very small stretches where we wouldn’t expect any congestion. “That is really critical to giving us that reliability and frequency, so this feels very much like a mass transit system – you go to the stop, there will be a bus within five

minutes and it will be reliable.” Proposed routes include: from Long Ashton park and ride through to the M32; from the Portway via Bristol Bridge down to Hicks Gate or even further, to Keynsham and Bath; and the central orbital. Mr Crowther said that a rethink of the vehicle fleet was also needed. “Double-deckers are great but there are vehicles like the Belfast Glider [bendy bus] where you don’t have to go upstairs for seats.” He said smaller orbital services around neighbourhoods in outer areas could run every 10 to 15 minutes instead of existing hourly ones that head into the city centre but get stuck in traffic and delayed. Mr Crowther said the West of England Combined Authority was working on a version of the Oyster card integrated ticketing as well as future mobility zones – transport hubs for different modes of travel, including electric scooters, that would be the circular suburban buses’ main destination. He said improving the cycling network was also important because some routes currently “peter out at an industrial estate”. Mr Crowther said the city centre orbital would be anticlockwise initially because it was much easier for buses to turn left than right.

New life for our empty shops KEYNSHAM will benefit from a scheme to breathe new life into vacant shops and buildings in high streets across Bath and North East Somerset. The Vacant Units Action Project has been awarded £500,000 from the West of England Combined Authority’s Recovery Fund. The project will see empty properties in Bath used for creative projects and pop-up businesses, with satellite projects in Keynsham and Midsomer Norton to follow across a two-year programme. The project will be delivered by Bath & North East Somerset Council as part of its High Streets Renewal programme. Alongside the £500,000 award from the West of England Combined Authority, further match funding and in-kind support will be provided by the council and Bath Business Improvement District. The project follows a successful pilot to celebrate local retail during the leadup to Christmas 2020, when the council worked with local artists to promote 12 vacant properties in Bath city centre by animating shop windows, encouraging two pop-up shops to open.

We can be so creative!

MARCH has been a crafty month for 1st Keynsham Scouts, with plenty for everyone to get involved in. Axe Troop have been working on their craft badges, with Arianne upcycling ring pulls from cans to make a matching jewellery set. Frome Troop have been experimenting with colour by dyeing paper towels with Skittles and using them to make beautiful artwork. The troop also had a virtual visit from mobile zoo Exotic Explorers and got to see animals such as a white-faced owl, an opossum and a python, as well as ask questions about them and about being a zoo keeper. Seven new Beavers have been invested into 1st Keynsham Rocky Beavers, and it’s great to see that Scouting has retained its popularity throughout the past year. Rocky Beavers have also been embracing spring with a host of seasonal activities, such as planting cress seeds, making bird feeders and making cork boats to sail.

RESIDENTS in Keynsham are being encouraged to get into the habit of having a rapid Covid-19 test. The loosening of lockdown restrictions will mean an increased risk of transmission. So individuals going out to work, volunteers, and parents and carers are being urged by Bath and North East Somerset Council to regularly visit a test centre to take a test or pick up a test kit. Councillor Rob Appleyard, cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “It's important that we start to get into the habit of having a regular Covid-19 test – preferably twice a week and 3-4 days apart.” Once you’ve registered online for a Covid-19 lateral flow test (LFT), getting tested takes just five minutes – with the results being sent later that day. The tests are open to anyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in Bath and North East Somerset – provided they don’t have symptoms. This includes essential workers and volunteers,

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

A Song for the Dark Times Ian Rankin This book is the latest from the excellent pen of Ian Rankin, about his irascible detective John Rebus. He is now retired from the Edinburgh Police Force and has reluctantly moved into a groundfloor flat with his dog Brillo and large record collection. Then one night, his daughter Samantha calls to tell him her husband has been missing for two days. A frantic Rebus makes the journey up to the north coast, dreading that his daughter may be the prime suspect. In parallel, his colleague Siobhan Clarke is investigating the murder of a rich student. Is there a connection with Rebus’s missing son-in-law? Mixing small town life and a disused prisoner-of-war camp that raises even more secrets, this is a pacey read. Rebus’s old adversary Ger Cafferty makes an appearance and there are some great descriptions of Scotland’s windswept coasts. A great recommendation. Adult Non-Fiction

Bonkers: My Life in Laughs Jennifer Saunders

There is a great section in any of your local libraries of biographies and autobiographies. Here is a

captivating one from 2013. We all know Jennifer Saunders from the Ab Fab days and her partnership with Dawn French, but did you know she was called “Podge” as a child? In this delightful autobiography, Jennifer, in a diary form, outlines her early life and early career. It is great read about the heady days of alternative comedy in the 1980s and how she met Dawn French and her husband Ade Edmondson. Then she tells of her great success in a comedy duo and writing Absolutely Fabulous. She mentions her breast cancer illness and lovely whippet, Olive. The book is accompanied by some great pictures - my favourite: Jennifer with Lulu and Britt Ekland.

Grow Fruit & Vegetables in Pots:

Planting advice and recipes from Great Dixter Aaron Bertelsen As spring approaches, here is a great new book for gardeners. The ‘Great Dixter’ is an enticement as it is the well-known garden of the famous gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd. Many of us don’t have outside growing space but can fit in a few pots somewhere. I’ve always grown my tomatoes and cucumbers in pots, and have tried lettuce, salad greens, strawberries and blueberries, but I would like to be

more adventurous. Aaron Bertelsen is a gardener cook and details over 25 varieties suitable for pots, and the recipes will be a bonus. Although reservations on LibrariesWest are suspended, you can use the ‘add to list’ feature found under the tab ‘select an action’ from where you can reserve the book when this service reopens. Again, a small but very useful new garden book:

The Ten-Minute Gardener Val Bourne This is available as an ebook but also can be reserved in the usual way. ‘Whether you have a spacious plot or a small patch in the garden, this handbook is full of tried-and-tested tips from a seasoned old hand. It offers practical month-by-month suggestions for making the most of the little time you can spare on both the coldest winter days and the long summer afternoons.’ - LibrariesWest catalogue. Children's Fiction

The Ugly Duckling Jonathan Bentley The little grey duckling looks nothing like the others. His feathers are scruffy and his feet are too big. He is teased and tormented from dawn to dusk, and no one ever asked him to play. What will

become of him? And will he ever learn to love himself? You cannot beat the tales told by Hans Christian Andersen and this retelling is lovely! It’s about the joys of being different and unique, and follows the birth of the wrong type of duckling (which of course turns out to be a swan!) If you are old enough to remember Tommy Steele singing The Ugly Duckling (or Danny Kaye) you will have fun reading this book with the younger members of your family. It has everything for a spring day … eggs, ducks and new life. A great tale with lovely illustrations.

n ST JOHN CHURCH

It's time to look back at our clock

THE more astute Keynsham residents will have realised something is missing from the local soundscape, in addition to the current reduction in traffic noise. Yes, St John the Baptist’s church clock is not chiming the hours. The reason? The auto winding mechanism has broken beyond repair and needs to be replaced. We are working on raising the funds to achieve this. In the meantime, have you ever wondered: Why churches have clocks? What happens in the ringing room? Why do we have a weather vane? If you would like to discover the answers to these questions and ask any others you have, you can sign up for a free Zoom talk on Monday

St John Church has lost its chime because the clock's auto winding mechanism needs replacing April 26. It starts at 7pm, lasts about an hour, and will cover: l The tower: its history, what it contains, and the weather vane l Our clock: its history, how it works, and a demonstration of how

it was wound in the past l Why churches have clocks l Your chance to ask questions If you would like to attend, email John Lye on johnlye33@ btinternet.com to obtain the Zoom

link you will need. Later in the year (Covid-19 regulations permitting) we hope to be able to organise tower tours so visitors can see the bell ringing room and the view from the top of the tower.

How to apply for town grants KEYNSHAM Town Council’s annual grant awards for 2021/2022 will be open to applications from April 1. The council will consider applications for financial help from properly constituted clubs and societies; voluntary bodies and associations; non-profit making organisations; and charitable bodies. To qualify, applications must demonstrate a direct benefit to the Keynsham town area, or any part of it, or all or some of its residents. Also, that benefit must be commensurate with the spending to be incurred.

Local groups affiliated to regional or national organisations will qualify, provided they are required to function substantially as an independent financial unit. The main aim of the scheme is to support new events, projects or items in the town, and the maximum grant payable to any one organisation will be £1,100. In addition to the £22,000 set aside for community grants, the town council is allocating a further £10,000 to support environmental projects that will have a direct benefit to the Keynsham town area.

Litter pick

Application packs will be available from April 1 to 30, and the closing date for applications will be Friday May 14. Applications will be considered by the grants committee on Wednesday June 16, and applicants will be notified of its decisions the following day. Covid-19 restrictions permitting, a grants presentation evening will take place in The Space (above the library) on Wednesday July 21. For details of how to apply from April 1, visit www.keynsham-tc.gov. uk or email deputytownclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk

KEYNSHAM Wombles are organising a litter pick on June 6 as part of the Great British Spring Clean. More details of the event, which will run from 10am to 12pm, will be released nearer the time, but participants can look forward to tea and Jo’s lemon drizzle cake.

New councillors

SALTFORD Parish Council has been joined by two new councillors. Shayan Aziz and Julie Austwick were co-opted to fill two vacancies at the council’s March meeting, from a field of five candidates.

Joyce Price (nee Pester)

October 1932 to March 2021 Joyce passed away in the BRI, with her family at her bedside, following a recent and unexpected heart attack. Joyce was born to Ernest Pester and Winifred (nee Fry) and brought up in Albert Rd with siblings John, Jim and Joan. After leaving school she worked at Fry’s chocolate factory in Somerdale. In 1953 Joyce married Brian Price and moved to Bristol to bring up her family before returning to Keynsham in 1985 to live at Rock Hill. She was greatly loved and will be much missed by children Jim, Catherine and David, and by all her family, friends and those who knew her. A service for Joyce will be held at 11:30 on 19 April 2021 for invited family only. Anyone wishing to join the service online can ring Roy Preddy Funeral Directors on 0117 956 2834 for further details. Any donations in memory of Joyce can be made to CLIC Sargent.

Wildlife park set to reopen after blaze AVON Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park is on track to reopen on April 12 despite a devastating blaze. The fire destroyed the maintenance and storage area at the back of the car park at the attraction in Pixash Lane, Keynsham. No people or animals were injured, but owner Doug Douglas said that £135,000 worth of kit and equipment had gone up in smoke. Doug said in a video on Facebook that, with the help of borrowed equipment, the attraction was determined to stick to its planned reopening date. “Thank you to everyone that has been offering support to us. If you want to help us, buy some tickets to come to the park when we open on the 12th.” Fire crews called to the site at about 3pm on March 22. They brought the blaze under control by sucking water from the boating lake. Doug said: “The fire department were absolutely amazing.” The blaze comes after a tough year for the wildlife park due to Covid-19 restrictions. But Doug said: “We will survive. We’ve had some amazing people support us, lend us kit, lend us equipment to get us back on our feet.” Tools and other equipment melted in the intense heat of the fire, whose cause is being investigated.

Police patrols to tackle Covid breaches POLICE will monitor busy areas of Saltford this spring and summer to tackle parking problems and any breaches of Covid-19 regulations. Parish and ward councillors told the Keynsham Beat Team that a strong police presence had proven beneficial in the past, and they requested frequent patrols in the months ahead, especially along the ‘old village’ and its riverside areas. The Beat Team stated: “Like last year, Saltford will be closely monitored and action taken to alleviate traffic problems and deal with any Covid breaches. “If there is a recognised need for extra police resources to patrol Saltford, that will be arranged beforehand. “That may include mobile patrols as well as foot and static points.” Police posters are currently on display reminding those in the area to follow Covid rules. If residents are concerned that offences are being

SALTFORD Parish Council has given its backing to proposed parking restrictions in Mead Lane and The Shallows. It “strongly supports” the traffic regulation order put forward by Bath and North East Somerset Council. A statement following its March meeting said: “The proposals are essential to address longstanding safety and access concerns along these roads which occur regularly during busy periods. “In considering its response, Saltford Parish Council notes the concerns expressed to it from residents, visitors, the police and the fire brigade.” The council said these concerns had been greatly alleviated since B&NES imposed temporary traffic orders last summer. It said the restrictions would also help protect committed, they should call the police on 101 or 999 as appropriate. Contact can also be made via the Keynsham Beat Team webpage. The parish council said that dangerously parked vehicles or gridlocked roads are police matters. Saltford ward councillor Alastair Singleton approached

the riverbank from damage caused by drivers parking on it. The council added: “The residents’ parking scheme element is supported to maintain and improve parking access for residents without offroad parking, viewed as required due to the high number of vehicle-using visitors to The Shallows. “The parish council requests that the proposals accommodate safety measures with regards to the layby on Mead Lane. “Measures should be put in place to ensure that vehicles parking in the layby do not overhang or in any way obstruct the highway. “This is for the prevention of accidents and to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, due to there being no pavement and poor visibility on this bend.”

Bath and North East Somerset Council about parking and highways traffic enforcement in Saltford, especially during periods of high visitor numbers. The B&NES Enforcement Team stated: “Please be assured that we are aware of the issues experienced on the riverside roads you refer to and we will be monitoring these locations.”

The parish council will continue to stay in close contact with parking enforcement over the coming months. Saltford ward councillor Duncan Hounsell has also requested that B&NES Covid safety officers patrol Saltford’s riverside areas, as seen in other busy locations in the B&NES area.

Happy Anya ready to get back to swimming

Prelim coach Pip and Prelim head coach Vicki

Taking the plunge with our Prelims

W

ith plans in place to return to swimming on April 12, Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club are looking for new swimmers to join them. If your child is a little fish and truly loves being in the water, then the Prelim squad head coach, Vicki, tells us what you need to know about life in the club’s entry squad – Prelims.

Meet Vicki "I am Vicki, head coach of our Prelim squad, and this is just a little bit about the squad and what we do. Prelims is the youngest squad at Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club, with an average age of 6-9 years old. We usually train twice a week on a Monday and Friday evening at Keynsham Leisure Centre and each session is 45 minutes long. At Prelims we start developing the fundamental technical skills, strength and stamina that the swimmers will need to progress into the next squad. It's not about who can swim the fastest and do the most lengths, it's about getting that stroke correct, along with what is right for that individual child. A typical session will start with an introduction to what we are focusing on and what we aim to achieve. All swimmers do a warm-up and then their coach will deliver a skill set for their swimmers, i.e. kick, arm pull, basic drills, body position practices and full stroke. They also start to learn how to turn and finish correctly, and how to dive off the brandnew starting blocks (which is a long way up and back down into the water when you are super small!) Every session ends with a bit of fun which also helps them develop – seahorse woggle race, a length of their choice, doing forward rolls or jumps off the diving block, just to name a few. All of the above would not be possible without the help and support of the fabulous Prelim coaching team (Nicky, Pip, Katy and Thea) and our regular poolside helper Shannon. The coaches have many years of experience between them and hold an array of coaching, teaching and lifeguard qualifications. For all

Lucas’s favourite place to swim is in a holiday resort pool or surfing in the sea

Eddie and Esme about to head off to training coaches, it is really rewarding to see the children progress, move up to the next-ability lane and eventually the next squad and into competition. It is a remarkable squad to be part of and it is really fun, friendly and loud. We have lots of giggles and a wonderful family atmosphere. Swimming is a wonderful sport and is good for your health and wellbeing. It’s a life skill – it could save your life or the life of someone else."

Current Prelims and their families Kelly Pope, director of I.J. McGill Transport Ltd, who are proud sponsors of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club, told us: “Myla is thoroughly enjoying her time with the Prelim squad in Keynsham. “Her confidence has come on in leaps and bounds and this is all thanks from the support that the coaches have given her to progress with her swimming. Not to mention how fit she is

becoming and having lots of fun whilst doing it!” Thea Beamont, Prelim coach and masters swimmer, said: “Both their Daddy and Nanny were the head coach of Prelims in the past, so we are a family who is passionate about the club. Esme is practising her swimming in the bath as she misses it so much.” Louise, Lucas’s mum, explains: “Lucas is 6 years old and always been a dolphin! He was born in the water and had swimming lessons from 6 weeks. He loves the routine of the club and swimming lengths with all the other squad members. He enjoys front crawl and diving. He has made some good mates already. He loves the fun sessions when they splash about and have floats to play with.” Prelim swimmer Connie says: “It’s really fun and time goes really fast in the pool because I have such fun with my friends.” Her squad mate Anya adds: “I enjoy learning how to do the different strokes and having a bit of fun in the water. I have lots of friends. Everyone is really kind. I am looking forward to being back in the pool.”

How to join At the moment, the club are looking for swimmers aged 6-8 years (school years 1, 2 and 3) who are able to swim one length of Keynsham Pool (25m) in each stroke. Individual trials will be taking place at Keynsham pool after lockdown, so now would be a good time to get onto the list. Swimmers from all ages (including over 18s) are welcome to apply for a trial. n KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB

Green in good shape for season AS our photograph shows, the green in Keynsham Park is looking in good shape as members of Keynsham Bowls Club prepare for what they hope will be a full season of bowling. A provisional fixture list has been prepared that covers the leagues in which the club takes part. The ladies field one team in each of the North Somerset and also Mendip leagues, in addition to playing a number of friendlies. The men field three teams in the Thursday evening Bristol and district league and also the Saturday afternoon North Somerset league, as well as a team in the Friday triples league, plus weekly friendlies. Ladies and gents then combine to play in the weekly Somerset mixed league on a Friday evening. In addition, ladies and gents teams compete in the various inter-club competitions, and everyone is welcome to come along to club

night on a Monday evening to take part in a social roll-up. Due to the quality of the green, the club is regularly asked to host county matches, and this year is no exception. In June there will be a ladies fixture between Somerset and Worcester, followed in August by a men’s fixture between Somerset and Middlesex. Whilst all this is happening, members compete against each other in the various cup competitions in the hope of winning a place at finals day at the end of the season. Club members also enjoy a varied social programme. In July there will be the annual barbecue, which will raise funds for the ladies and gents captains’ charity, which this year is Parkinson UK. Entertainment will be provided by an electric violinist called Lizz Lipscombe, playing everything from classic to pop.

Then in December, members can let their hair down at the Christmas party with entertainment by the duo the Two of Clubs. Also throughout the winter season there are monthly events such as quizzes and curry evenings, plus the regular monthly coffee morning. You certainly get value for money if you are a member of Keynsham Bowls Club!

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

n SALTFORD TENNIS

FRYS Bowling Club have started the new season by launching a new website, which will have the latest news and match reports from our league and cup games. More content and archives will be added throughout the season. The new website at http://www.frysbowlingclub. wixsite.com was due to go live from April 1. At the time of writing, Bowls England are yet to release the conditions for playing bowls in the coming months, but we are hopeful of being able to play matches against other clubs. Our season runs from mid-April to the end of September. The club play friendly matches on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and for those who like a competitive match, we play in the Bristol and District League on Thursday evenings, as well as a number of cup matches. We also offer internal club competitions, and there are plenty of opportunities for those who prefer to play socially. If you are new to the game, we hope to be able to offer tuition

SALTFORD Lawn Tennis Club was due to reopen on Monday March 29 and will follow the latest Lawn Tennis Association Covid-19 guidance. Two “Welcome Back to Tennis” fun days are planned for Saturday April 3 and Saturday April 10 for children and adults, which will be run by our talented and enthusiastic coaching team. For more information, visit the Events page on our website at www. clubspark.lta.org.uk/ SaltfordTennisClub The club has very reasonable membership fees and is always looking for new members of all abilities. The club is optimistic for the future, with teams in the Avon tennis leagues, a singles ladder, in-house tournaments, club play and social play, and a coaching team that provides a comprehensive coaching programme. A new, larger clubhouse is planned for the very near future. The courts are also available for nonmembers to book via the website. Any queries, please visit the website or email sec.saltfordtennis@gmail.com

New-look website for fresh start Fun days return

throughout the season. The club will look to offer as much play as the regulations from Bowls England and the government allow. The News page on our new website will have updates about the playing conditions and what the club are able to offer, so check it out for the latest updates. Alternatively, please contact our secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com, for updates, to apply for membership, or arrange tuition. You can also follow us on Twitter - @FrysBowls.
