Buses diverted to serve new estate among changes

l From Page 1 basis following calls from Bath and North East Somerset Council, local councillors and developers as well as residents. From Longmeadow Road, the 0714, 0911,1308, 1639 and 1833 departures from Temple Street to Bristol – and the 0836, 1236, 1600 and 1805 departures from Bristol Bus Station – will divert to pick up passengers from the area as of April 2. Abus managing director Alan Peters said: “If the service proves popular other journeys may be diverted. If the expected passenger use is not forthcoming then the service will revert to its present route at the end of the year.” Meanwhile, road layout changes in Bristol city centre as part of the Metrobus scheme will affect Keynsham and Saltford bus users as they mean Abus’s 349 and First’s X39, 38 and 39 will no longer serve Baldwin Street or Victoria Street. On journeys to Bristol after the Temple Meads stop they will operate via Redcliffe Way, stopping by St Mary Redcliffe Church, The Grove, Prince Street stopping by Narrow Quay House, Broad Quay and Lewins Mead to Bristol Bus Station. From the bus station, on journeys towards Keynsham, they will operate via Rupert Street, Broad Quay, Prince

Street, stopping before Middle Avenue, The Grove, Redcliffe Way stopping opposite St Mary Redcliffe Church and rejoining the present route at Temple Meads stop. Mr Peters said: “It is hoped that stops can be provided somewhere on the Centre for these services. This will happen as soon the present bus stop upgrading work is completed. Both ourselves and First regret any inconvenience that this unavoidable alteration may cause to passengers and hope that the alterations taking place will reduce congestion in the area, improving bus service reliability.” In another change to Abus services, the operator has announced that the 442 service, from St Philips to Oldfield School via Hanham, Keynsham and Saltford, will be withdrawn from April 24 because of low passenger numbers. In a letter to Oldfield School, Mr Peters said: “We regret having to take this decision to withdraw this service but as you are aware these buses are provided on a purely commercial basis reliant on the revenue taken and unfortunately the work that the bus used to do in the middle of the day no longer exists leaving a large financial shortfall.” Leaflets on the alterations are being provided by Abus.

n NEWS ‘Coppers and Brass’ team up for concert

Fate of former toilet block still undecided Any future plans for a vacant toilet block in Keynsham’s town centre won’t be put into action until after the one-way trial in the High Street, Bath and North East Somerset Council has said. The public toilets closed more than two years ago, a loss that is still the subject of letters sent to Keynshamvoice. A council spokesperson said:

“We are currently considering a range of options for the toilet block in the longer term; including demolishing the block to make space for car parking or using the building for another purpose. “However no decision has been made at this point. Any changes would be scheduled after the Keynsham High Street oneway trial.”

Bath and North East Somerset Council chairman Alan Hale has called on former police colleagues to help him raise money for three good causes at a concert in Keynsham. Coppers and Brass in The Spring will see Avon and Somerset Police Male Voice Choir perform alongside Bold Brass on Saturday, April 8, at St John’s Church in the High Street. Councillor Hale is breaking with tradition in his year as chairman, opting to hold two choir concerts instead of hosting a gala fundraising dinner in aid of his chosen charities, which work in the fields of autism, cerebral palsy and dementia. He said: “I am eager to raise money for my three charities but wanted to be able to involve a wider cross section of the community and with tickets at £10 I am hopeful that many more people will be able to

enjoy this fundraising function while helping those who are less fortunate." CouncillorHale’s charities are Butterflies-Haven, the Rice Institute at Bath’s RUH and Wizzybugs. The first concert took place in Bath on March 25 and featured the Bath Community Gospel Choir. The Keynsham concert is sponsored by L J Guyan Funeral Services. Tickets are available at https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/, from Smiths Jewellers in High Street or at the parish office at St John’s church hall. A wine and juice bar will be available.

Bidders ‘inundate’ agents as fire station is put up for sale Bids to buy or rent Keynsham’s former fire station must be made by the end of April, after the site went on the market last month and agents say they were “inundated” with inquiries. Property consultancy Alder King has invited best bids following a flurry of interest within days of the Temple Street site going on sale. Emma Smith, associate at Alder King, said most potential new occupants intended to retain the existing buildings, with a wide range of uses in mind. The site is being offered for sale, or possibly to let, by Avon Fire and Rescue after the station closed in November 2015 and firefighters based there moved to the new station at Hicks Gate. Ms Smith said: “This is an interesting town centre site which has generated a lot of

Keynsham’s former fire station should have a new owner by the end of the month demand from a wide variety of end users, the majority of which are looking to re-use the existing fire station buildings. “Within days of starting to market the property, we were inundated with inquiries. As a result we’re inviting interested parties to submit their best bids by midday on Friday, April 28. “Inviting best bids in a competitive market is often the fairest way to progress matters for both the vendor and

purchaser, helping to conclude a sale with a purchaser who can demonstrate its ability to pay a fair price and proceed in a timely fashion.” Bids in excess of £325,000 for the building and yard are invited. Alder King used the same approach to sell Brislington fire station last year, which was purchased by a local family-run business for an undisclosed sum after a £475,000 price was quoted by the agents.

Traffic to be monitored as modernisation work gets under way at city rail station Google Street View

A raft of measures will be in place to help keep rail travellers moving during more than a fortnight of improvement works at Bath Spa station. During the Easter holidays, from April 8 to 24, Network Rail will be widening the platforms in preparation for the arrival of longer Intercity Express trains later this year. Weekday commuters will see reduced services, with just one platform open at a time, while a full rail replacement bus service will run on weekends and bank holidays. To help the replacement buses keep to schedule, Bath and North East Somerset Council is introducing a number of measures, which will include monitoring traffic flow on the A4 at Saltford and asking Avon and Somerset police to enforce

Platforms are being widened at Bath Spa Station the box junctions at Hicks Gate roundabout, particularly during peak times. Non-emergency roadworks have been embargoed along routes that will be used by the rail replacement service, including the A4, where there will also be strict parking and bus lane enforcement.

Signs warning drivers of potential disruption will be displayed during the project, while city centre traffic will also be monitored at several sites, including via a CCTV link to Bath Spa station. A temporary city-bound bus lane will also be installed on the A4 London Road between the A46 roundabout and its junction with Lambridge Street to the north of the city centre. Councillor Anthony Clarke, Cabinet member for transport, said: “We are working closely with Network Rail and GWR to try to minimise disruption to travellers during the improvement works at Bath Spa station. The modernised station will open up extra capacity for more rail commuters coming to Bath Spa, which links in with the other development work going

on in the city and the council's long term vision for Bath – with transport improvements and economic growth supporting plans for around 7,000 new homes and 11,000 new jobs by 2035.” Meanwhile at Keynsham Station, work is continuing in the run-up to the Bath Spa modernisation scheme as Network Rail re-routes cables through the car park as part of a large signaling project taking place along the route from Bristol to Paddington. Work on the London-bound platform is expected to be completed by April 24. Great Western Railway is providing updates on services at Bath Spa during the works online at www.gwr.com/travelupdates/planned-engineering/ bath2017

Toilet training your puppy

T

oilet training can be one of the trickiest parts of training your new puppy and can sometimes take a very long time to sort out. It’s important to remember that all dogs learn at different speeds, so bear with them – they will get there in the end! Puppies should be actively taken outside every 40 minutes, even if the back door is left open. As soon as you see signs that your puppy is about to toilet (e.g. ground sniffing, circling, positioning) say your toileting cue (e.g. “wee wees” or “toilet”). Praise your pup as they toilet outside then give a small treat as soon as they finish. It's also important to take them outside after eating, drinking and sleeping. Try to avoid using puppy pads – make it clear from the start that outside is where to go. If your puppy toilets in the house, do not respond, otherwise you risk them becoming coprophagic (eating their own faeces) or toileting in hidden locations to disguise the fact they've been. Put your pup in another room while you clean with a solution of biological washing powder.

A bar by Pomegranate will be available on the night.

If you catch them in the act, quickly interrupt – make a silly noise and take them outside (carry if necessary). Hopefully they will finish outside and you can reward as usual. Puppy training parties We now host puppy training and socialisation parties at our Highcroft surgeries in Longwell Green, Keynsham and Midsomer Norton. Everything a puppy discovers in the first 16 weeks will last for life. Puppies benefit enormously from socialisation and training and we invite all new puppy owners to join our puppy parties. The parties will help you to understand, train and really bond with your pet in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. You will be free to chat to the trainers and staff who are there to answer all your questions. Puppy party training courses consist of four one-hour sessions and cost £40. All puppies must be vaccinated and under 17 weeks of age at the start of the course. For more information or to book a place, contact your nearest surgery.

Alert as thieves target four vans for tools in one week Van owners in Keynsham are being warned to empty their vehicles of tools after a spate of thefts in recent weeks. Thieves raided four vans in just one week, stealing a range of tools and equipment, and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them. Between Tuesday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 14, the following incidents were reported: • Between Tuesday, March 7, and Thursday, March 9, thieves stole Makita, Festool and Paslode brand tools, including drills, a saw, a sander and a nail gun after forcing the lock of a Peugeot Boxer parked in Laburnum Walk • Overnight Friday, March 10, to Saturday, March 11, the lock of a Citroen Relay in Sherwood Road was forced and Makita chisels, drills, battery pack, charger and DAB radio were taken

• Between Friday, March 10, and Monday, March 13, plumbers’ tools and other items including a Makita drill were taken from a Ford Transit in Tintagel Close In the fourth incident, which happened between 7.15pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 14, when the lock was forced on a Renault Trafic van parked in Bristol Road, witnesses saw two men taking tools from the vehicle and chased them. The suspects dropped some of the tools but escaped in a grey Renault with Makita and Dewalt items, including drills grinders, saws and batteries. The men were both described as white and in their 20s, about 5ft 9ins tall with short dark hair. Both were wearing dark-coloured clothing. Anyone with any information about these thefts is asked to get

in touch through the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5217056899. Alternatively ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call. Officers encourage van drivers to empty their vehicles overnight if possible and, if not, to make sure tools are kept in a secure box or cage anchored inside the vehicle. Making tools and equipment identifiable can help to deter thieves. Police also suggest parking with the rear access doors against a wall or another vehicle and always locking and setting the alarm of vehicles every time they are left unattended. Residents who hear an alarm are asked to check outside and call 999 if they see someone tampering with a vehicle.

Funding to capture tales of wartime life

Wombles are taking litter

A project that aims to capture memories of what life was like in Bath and North East Somerset during the First World War has been awarded £7,100 in lottery funding. A Centuries Memories is part of B&NES Council’s commemoration of the centenary of the conflict and will involve small groups of older people sharing family memories passed down through the generations. Young people will also take part, recording interviews and researching local history, and the stories will be gathered into an illustrated book in 2018. The money was awarded to the project from the Heritage Lottery Fund. To find out more about Bath & North East Somerset Council’s First World War Centenary commemorations, contact centenary_worldwar1@bathnes.gov. uk or visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/ WW1centenary

Volunteers took their battle against litter in Keynsham to new heights last month – abseiling in the Memorial Park and hosting a conference on creating the country’s first litter-free town. Members of Keynsham Wombles were out in force at the start of the month, tackling rubbish hotspots around the town to coincide with Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean on March 4. The day before, the group took advantage of one volunteer’s abseiling skills to clear litter that had collected in the ‘V’ shape created by the pillars under Echo Bridge in the Memorial Park enabling them to bag up rubbish that ordinary litter pickers couldn’t reach! On the Saturday around 50 volunteers got to work at various points across Keynsham, collecting rubbish as they made their way to Keynsham Bowls Club for afternoon tea.

Plenty to discuss at the LitterFree Town workshop Then on March 18 it was time to launch the group’s most ambitious project yet – turning Keynsham into the UK’s first litter-free town to create a model for other communities across the country. Chief Womble Erica Davies and other members of the group welcomed speakers George Monck of Cleanup UK and Rose Tehan, a senior researcher working with Keep Britain Tidy, to the Space along with members of a wide range of community groups, B&NES

Council chairman Alan Hale, representatives from the town council and youth council, local schools and more. Chair Alastair Singleton explained that the goal was to create an accredited awards scheme that towns across the country could work towards while improving their environment, adding that Keynsham was “at the cutting edge of social action to tackle the blight of litter nationally and internationally”.

clean-up campaign to the next level

Mr Monck spoke about Cleanup UK’s work in deprived areas, organising voluntary litter picks that not only helped wildlife and improved the look of an area but had the effects of making people feel more positive about their surroundings and bringing the community together. Rose Tehan shared interesting research carried out at the Centre for Social Innovation that looks at ways to introduce a change in behaviour in people who litter. For example, dog fouling in one area fell by 46 per cent after posters featuring eyes and various messages were put up in certain hotspots. Meanwhile, other studies have revealed that littering would be a big turn-off on a first date, young males are less likely to litter in front of females and young people are less likely to litter when they are alone. With plenty to talk about, the room was split into three

groups to look at how to engage with different parts of the community, the role of education and how to work with businesses – both local firms and the national and multi-national chains that have premises in Keynsham. Following the event, Erica Davies said: “I was really heartened that so many people gave up their Saturday morning to join this workshop, which shows just how committed our community is to working together to create change. “We now have lots of innovative and fun ideas to try and I’m really looking forward to working with as many people as possible across Keynsham to implement as many as we can.” Anyone who would like to find out more about Keynsham Wombles or Litter-Free Keynsham can email womble@ transitionkeynsham.org or call 07713 417974.

RIMESTOPPERS! What do you know about it and what do you assume you know? It’s interesting how many people think that they are linked to the police – well, they’re not. Crimestoppers is a totally independent charitable organisation. It is also a totally anonymous service. They will not take any of your details if you call them. What they do with the information that is provided is sanitise it so that the source is not identifiable. The information is then forwarded to our intelligence department. The importance of a service like this is that anyone can contact them with any information. What you need to remember is that no matter how small the information that you have is, it could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for an investigation. If you have any information that you think could be relevant to a crime or situation then I would urge you to get it to us either directly on the 101 phone number, through the force website neighbourhood pages or by using Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers can be contacted by phone on 0800 555111 or by sending a message via their website which can be found by putting Crimestoppers into your search engine. With a change in the weather, this brings a change in the types of burglary that we suffer. They change from creeper style burglaries to distraction type burglaries. Workers that are due to come to your address should have uniform and ID and will be happy to contact their main office to confirm this. “Rogue trader” is a blanket term used to describe any tradesperson who completes work and either overcharges or completes the work to a clearly unsatisfactory standard. These traders normally target the elderly or infirm to gain the work by door knocking and pointing out either a defect with the property or offering a service that you appear to need. Please be wary of anyone knocking on your door and offering to complete work. I would advise that you do not let anyone into your property. If you need services use a company that you know or have had recommended. If a company knocks on your door to offer services, it should provide full details of the company and offer a seven-day cooling-off period should you change your mind so that you are not rushed into having to make a decision. any outstanding bill. The banks in Keynsham have been advised to assist elderly customers that are taking out large sums of money – they will talk to you and offer you support. They will also contact the police if it appears someone is overcharging you. Last year I recovered £5,000 from a company that was claiming to provide a service that wasn’t required. The elderly occupant of the property luckily kept contact information but you will be surprised how many people don’t. The area that I cover is Keynsham, Saltford, Farmborough, Corston, Queen Charlton and Compton Dando. All of these area are surrounded with main atrial routes, which is great for a burglar as they can be in and out in seconds and on a route that takes them out of the local area quickly. If you see someone acting suspiciously and you’re not sure then please call us to report it. The quicker we get on scene to locate and identify any possible offenders the better. We would rather attend than miss an opportunity to arrest a burglar. Offenders want to spend the least amount of time possible in the property and most of the time will be looking at a location and planning an escape route. Please be vigilant and call with any concerns. PC James Evans

Walking footballers are speedy fundraisers! Members of a walking football club showed they don’t hang around when it comes to raising money for good causes, handing £6,000 to two cancer charities. Keynsham Walking Football Club hosted a benefit night last month in aid of Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Care Support after losing colleague Harry Curran and Julie Ricketts, the wife of club member Peter, to the disease. The evening, which featured music from four players who formed a band for the night and from another member who is a DJ, raised £3,000, with £1,100 coming from the raffle alone. The club had also raised £3,000 in the run-up to the event and on March 24, two cheques were handed to their chosen charities at the AJN Stadium. Martin Coles from the club said: “This fantastic achievement was down to a lot of hard work behind the scenes by many of our players, wives and families,

getting auction pledges from local companies and donations of raffle prizes. “We are all very proud of our club and wonderful work we do for good causes.” The club, which has been

running for nearly three years and has more than 50 members, has been presented with a trophy by Cancer Research UK as thanks for their support. Anyone who wants to “play the beautiful game a little slower”

can join Keynsham Walking Football Club at the AJN Stadium every Tuesday morning for the over-65s and every Friday morning for the over-55s from 10am to 11am and pay £3 to play.

The family of a former Keynsham Scout leader have said a huge thank you to everyone who has helped raise more than £14,000 in his memory. Francis Clifton lost his battle with cancer on October 4, 2015, at the age of just 22, and since the following December friends and relatives have organised a host of fundraising events in aid of Dorothy House, from quiz nights and coffee mornings to a skydive. Francis spent his final days at the hospice near Bath where he was cared for by nursing staff who also provided muchvalued support to his loved ones. Paula Clifton, Francis’s mum, said: “Francis had a real zest for life and was inspirational in the way he was also keen to try new adventures, either with Keynsham Scouts where he was Assistant Scout Leader or with his many friends.

“To try and keep his fighting spirit alive and in a small way thank the wonderful team at Dorothy House, various activities have been undertaken, ranging from a quiz night, coffee mornings and afternoon tea to raffles. Others undertook more physical challenges with the Men’s Bath Walk, the Bristol Half Marathon and marathons.” To add to the Tulip Fund set up in Francis’ memory, Paula stepped out of her comfort zone and took part in the charity’s Dotty Skydive as well as running the Bristol Half Marathon, raising £3,108.18. The fundraising total stands at a staggering £14,395.20, a sum that would make Francis proud and for which Paula says she, Francis’ dad Tony and brother Matt are incredibly grateful. She added: “Francis showed tremendous courage and

n issue that often causes annoyance to constituents is unfair parking penalties. These have become more of a problem since clamping on private land was outlawed because the penalties that are now imposed may come sometime after the offence and some companies are quite arbitrary in their approach. This was debated in Westminster Hall, a second chamber of the House of Commons, recently. As I have been in correspondence with the Department of Transport for a number of constituents I joined in the debate in the hope of improving the situation in future and I was not surprised by the

reports from other Members of bad behaviour. In my own experience local authorities are much more reasonable and accountable whereas some private companies are essentially cowboys that deliberately aim to fine people rather than collect a fair fee for short-term parking. Other MPs told of how threatened people could feel by bills that appear to be legal fines and charges that were imposed for minor mistakes, such as incorrectly entering a letter of the number plate, which would not lead to a penalty from a public operator. The Minister responsible, Andrew Jones, is fortunately one of the best members of the Government and is receptive

to these concerns. Naturally, he recognises that there needs to be some mechanism to ensure that people who park unlawfully are fined but that ought not to be unduly onerous. His responsibility is for DVLA which gives out the registered keeper’s details but private parking is under the control of another department, for Communities and Local Government, which complicates matters. Nonetheless, I am encouraged by his approach and hope that rogue operators will find life more difficult for the benefit of all of those who try to park properly and expect to be treated fairly. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Keynsham in Bloom and Avon Wildlife Trust are working together to develop the triangle of grass on the junction of Manor Road and the Wellsway in Keynsham. The aim is to create an area that is beautiful and attractive all year round for those who live nearby, drive past, walk past on their way to school or work, cycle or walk their dog – AND for pollinator insects! It will be included in the judges’ route in July for the South West in Bloom competition. Last year Keynsham achieved a Gold Award and this year we are working hard to achieve it again. There are lots of aspects that go into making a successful entry, and this would be just one of the many community projects that will contribute to the overall award. It’s not just about gardens and the town centre.

April, 2017 AWT are well known locally due to their long-term involvement in the Willsbridge Valley. The valley is a haven for wildlife and is largely managed through a strong community volunteer group who have been involved for well over 20 years. There’s also a strong Wildlife Trust local group based in Keynsham who run a programme of wildlife-themed talks, walks and outings throughout the year. Good conservation management also needs wildlife-centred advice and AWT actively works with farmers through its B-lines project to help land owners. The B-lines project aims to join up habitats that pollinators can thrive in. Gardens and public spaces are great, and most can easily be made even better! We would love to get Keynsham buzzing! Some things are very simple and effective. To find out more, look on the AWT website for tips. We will welcome anyone who would like to come and help the Avon Wildlife Trust volunteers put their skills and tools into action on Thursday, April 20, from 10.30am. We will be tidying up this area too, which includes

painting the historic finger post road sign, if it’s not raining! Members of Avon Wildlife Trust’s land management team will be on hand to answer questions about what their team are doing and what you can do in your own gardens to help pollinators. Keynsham in Bloom would love to build up a better picture of what people are doing in Keynsham in their gardens, too. Let us know by emailing Dawn Drury at deputytownclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk, including your location, so we can build up a map of the pollinator hotspots. If you would like to offer your help, or would like any more information, please contact Dawn on 0117 986 8683. Keynsham in Bloom and Avon Wildlife Trust

Parking will cause town’s cardiac arrest I noticed in your article last month about the Riverside development, and also Sam Waite’s celebratory poem, that both convey the good news about Keynsham and its big step forward with the better leisure centre, the flats and the prospect

of a vibrant Temple Street. However, at the heart of this is the seemingly intractable problem of parking; which is to say, the prospect of cardiac arrest. When all is said and done this Riverside development, even without a major attraction of some sort being developed on the derelict fire station site, can only aggravate the already grievous parking problem. The article makes clear the division between B&NES planners and B&NES Highways. Highways is, of course, quite correct in raising concerns about the strategic parking deficiency, the “number of parking spaces falling well short of the policy requirement”. The planners, of course, are rightly anxious to secure the permissions required to go ahead with an otherwise excellent scheme, a scheme which represents a great turn-round at the behest of our local councillors from what was once to be merely a pool on Ashton Way car park. A (literally) joined-up solution to the parking is to multi-storey Bath Hill East and footbridge over the river, perhaps Westonbirt style. Yes, there are issues and impediments, but these are

15 as nothing compared to the vast increase in housing that B&NES can somehow envisage solutions to in its Joint Strategic Planning. The application of serious imaginative thought to the parking issue for the Riverside development and Temple Street is needed and needed now. We Keynsham folk should not be schooled in low expectations for our community, after all we are invited by B&NES to “Think Big” (Page 1 of its “2020 Vision”). Terry Edwards Keynsham resident

People didn’t vote to become poorer

Following economic turmoil, the Labour government 50 years ago announced it was lowering the exchange rate so the pound would become worth 14 per cent less against the dollar. The then Prime Minister Harold Wilson was ridiculed for saying in a public broadcast: “It does not mean that the pound here in Britain, in your pocket or purse or in your bank has been devalued.” Since the EU referendum, l Turn to Page 16

LETTERS l From Page 15 the value of the pound has declined by more than 14 per cent against all major currencies making everything we buy more expensive. This is now showing itself in rising shopping bills. Inflation is biting into real wages. The pound remains slumped against other currencies with Theresa May’s declaration that she is taking the country out of the European “single market”. What do “Brexiteers” say? “The pound was overvalued”, “it is an adjustment” and “it is an opportunity”. They point to increased exports but, as a businessman said to me, anyone can sell something worth £5 for £4.50. People did not vote in the referendum for the country or themselves to be poorer. Lawn bowls is not just for the ‘oldies’

I am very concerned that there are very few people taking up lawn bowls. The membership of many clubs is becoming older and there are no younger people to take their place. It is a myth that the sport is for the silverhaired or “oldies” of this world. We have tried unsuccessfully to recruit younger people and the fact is that the sport is very relaxing – just the right activity for youngsters who wish to relax after their exams or for those who do not like contact sports; also for adults who have stressful occupations. For the slightly older person it is good exercise – bending and stretching. Uppermost, it is a very social sport for all. We have a coffee morning on Saturday, April 1, at 10am – join us for refreshments, games and prizes and meet some of our members. Our bowling season starts on April 22 with a President’s Day match starting at 2pm when we will welcome spectators who wish to satisfy their curiosity about the game. Monday, May 15, at 6pm is the beginning of our weekly club

nights when anybody is welcome to come and have a go, guided by free coaching. All you need is comfy clothing and flat shoes if you have them; we supply the bowls. We round off the evening socially with hotdogs and a drink. We are a small, friendly club whose members simply enjoy a good game of bowls, win or lose, and would welcome anyone from the age of seven upwards who wishes to try the sport. We are situated in Alexandra Park at the top of Shakespeare Avenue off the A367 (Wellsway) as you come out of Bath. The aim is to have fun and enjoy yourself. See you there! Saltford 1941 This is a poem about an incident that happened at the old Saltford railway station in 1941. An RAF plane crashed into the station sidings following a mid-air collision, with the tragic loss of the pilot. The event was witnessed by my great uncle, David Taylor, who was just a boy at the time.

The weir, the lock, the manor, the shop, All were there the day he dropped. The swans, the buzzards, the fish they swam, None could help that poor dear man. The sun was shining gold and red, When the plane flew overhead. Steam trains whistled through the station, Much to young boys’ delectation. Out of nowhere came the deafening screech, From the doomed plane they leeched. Towards the Roundhill could be seen, Black smoke and carnage masking green. Debris crisscrossed the tracks, All that remained of his heroic acts. Samuel Waite Write to us at Keynshamvoice, 16 Chandag Road, Keynsham, BS31 1NR or email news@keynshamvoice.co.uk

Children can count on their maths skills Youngsters from an after-school club based at Community at 67 in Keynsham headed into the town centre to put maths into action. With their trusty rulers and set squares packed, the group tackled challenges around the civic centre and library, including calculating the height of the clocktower, studying the shapes of the town’s Roman mosaics and even working out how much they might get paid for a day’s work in a local shop. The Maths Trail was devised by Sheila Crocombe, a former maths teacher and leader of the weekly Maths Club, who has produced a booklet to accompany the activities and secured funding from Bath and North East Somerset Council and ward councillor Alan Hale for measuring wheels, high-vis vests and printing. Sheila said:

“The trail is an opportunity for children to see how maths works in the real world. “The Maths Club at Community at 67 is not a homework club, we try to get children enthused about maths. We always have plenty of activities but this is the first time we have taken them outside for a session.” As well as using the trail with future members of the Maths Club, Sheila is also hoping to form a link with schools to allow them to use the resource for their pupils, too. Councillor Hale said: “I am delighted to support the work of Community at 67, the community hub on Queens Road, with the use of my Ward Councillor Initiative fund. Enabling the delivery of the Maths Trail helps children develop their maths

The firefighters also gave the

Pupils, staff and special guests have celebrated a significant milestone in the construction of a new £1.8 million classroom block at Saltford C of E Primary. A “topping out” ceremony was held at the school on Friday, March 24, to mark the completion of the block’s roof, based on a Scandinavian tradition of placing a tree on top of a building to bring luck. Visitors including Bath and North East Somerset Council chairman Alan Hale, local councillors and representatives of BBA Architects of Bath were given a tour of the building as work continues by representatives of construction company H Mealing and Sons of Bath. Afterwards, members of the school council gave a presentation in which they thanked everyone involved and said they looked forward to being able to use the building from September. Visitors also signed the final piece of the roof, which was then fixed in place. The new block will replace a number of temporary buildings at the 420-place school which are now in a poor condition and features six classrooms, two of which will have bi-folding doors so they can be made into one larger room.

The project is being overseen and funded by B&NES Council and aims to meet growing demand for school places in the area. Headteacher Dawn Elliott has played a significant part in the design of the new block and the project also includes a new fenced sports pitch in a park next to the school, which has been created in negotiation with Saltford Parish Council and can be used by the community outside of school hours. The primary school is part of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust and WMAT chief executive Andrea Arlidge said: “This is an exciting occasion for us all. The new classrooms are much needed and will further enhance the quality of the learning environment in this wonderful school. Congratulations to the headteacher and governing body whose vision and determination have made this possible.”

Business contest adds up to good experience for students Sixth formers from Keynsham tackled real-life business problems as they battled against teams from schools across the South West for a place in the finals of a national competition. Two teams of first-year A level business and economics students from WMAT Post 16 took part in the BASE competition run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales at the University of the West of England. Working alongside accountants, they tried to solve issues faced by a TV production company before giving a presentation on their ideas and facing questions from a panel. One Keynsham team won second place in the contest and Matt Elliott, head of business at Wellsway School, said: “The BASE competition is a great

opportunity for young people to find out about some of the fantastic opportunities there are in business, especially through the apprenticeship route which is often overlooked as a way into traditional professions. “Having a glimpse of what it’s like working in a commercial environment, dealing with

complex issues and making quick decisions is great preparation for their A levels. The chance to work alongside professionals is a real eye-opener and several past competitors have been inspired to go into accounting as a result of this competition. “I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.”

A display created by pupils from Wellsway School’s Book Club to celebrate World Book Day and the rewards of reading was named runner-up in a national competition. The students’ entry, which was one of thousands entered into the contest, was produced with the help of librarian Nic Pearce. Their prize was a signed copy of acclaimed picture book A Child of Books by Sam Winston and a framed limited edition print from the book.

Youngsters hear first-hand accounts of life during war Older people have been sharing memories of wartime life with children from a Keynsham school. The youngsters from St John’s Primary dressed as evacuees and went to visit members of Age UK B&NES’ day centre in the town to hear their stories. They were joined by local historian Eric Miles, who brought along a collection of wartime memorabilia to help bring the experiences to life for the young visitors. Mr Miles said: “I was evacuated to Tiverton from Knowle West and I still have the original postcard I sent back to my mother to let her know where I was. I also have lots of photographs, some ration books and my identity card, as well as a gas mask and some hand lamps, to show the children and the day centre members.” The session was part of an initiative between Age UK B&NES and the school to break down barriers between the generations. Other sessions have included gardening, painting,

knitting and comparing school life past and present. Before the visit on April 4, deputy head teacher Mark Hilliam said: “The children from St John’s that have been involved in this project have really enjoyed the time they have spent at the day centre. The war memories session is generating lots of excitement as the children will be dressing as wartime evacuees. The session will help to bring history to life for the children and help them to understand first-hand what it was like for day centre members who have lived through wartime.” Age UK B&NES’ day centre, based at Charlton House, Hawthorns Lane, Keynsham, runs on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am-3pm. It offers a range of recreational and social activities, companionship, outings and talks. A day at the centre costs £15, which includes transport, lunch and activities. All-action weekend takes Scouts from river to cave to mountain New from 1st Keynsham Scouts Adventure at Charterhouse

It may sound like a Famous Five book title but this was an event involving more than 50 Keynsham Scouts taking part in an activity weekend on the Mendips in the middle of February. Caving, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and climbing were all on the menu. Some great comments were captured – “Wow, a cave is really dark!”; “Have I really climbed that high?”; “We used the map it was easy.” Great skills learnt, lots of laughs and memories captured. When do we go again?

Thank you to our local fire service

Over the last few months many of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Keynsham have been to visit the new fire station at Hicks Gate. A huge thank you to the firemen who, between “shouts”, have taken time to share what they do, the equipment they use and the challenges they face. From lighting fires to putting them out, some great community sharing – thank you.

Beavers build dams – or do they?

Learning what it is like to sleep on the street in cardboard boxes was a recent experience for some of our Keynsham Beaver Scouts.

Clockwise from left: map-reading at Charterhouse; visiting Hicks Gate fire station; Beavers building cardboard homes to spend the night in They spent an evening building their cardboard city at Scout HQ before sleeping overnight in it. There were certainly some different designs and one Beaver told us: “It was great fun but not sure I would want to sleep out on the street in it.”

Clay pigeon shooting

Does anyone fancy trying clay pigeon shooting on April 1 or 2? Our next fundraising shoot takes

Old benches are transformed into colourful ‘Buddy Stops’

Pupils have unveiled new “Buddy Stops” in their school playground with the help of the Rotary Club of Keynsham and a local furniture-making business. Two benches and two picnic tables in the grounds of St Keyna Primary School have been transformed with rainbow patterns in a project overseen by fundraisers from the Rotary club. Keynsham-based furniture company NCS Bisley Group stepped in to carry out the work while David Dover from Akzo Nobel provided the paint. The benches have now become “Buddy Stops” thanks to a suggestion from pupil Sophie, and can be used by children as place to go if they need someone to talk to. Adrian Dodds from the Rotary Club of Keynsham said: “We are really pleased that our project

Lessons collide with real-life science for students exploring work at CERN Students from IKB Academy have been inspired by meeting the scientists who aim to answer questions about the origins of the universe. The 18 students, who will all be sitting A levels in physics or engineering this summer, travelled to Switzerland to visit CERN, home to the Large Hadron Collider. They heard about the discoveries being made at the site and saw the machines being used to carry out the work. The students were also lucky enough to be among the small number of visitors who get the chance to go 100 metres below ground to see the CMS machine where the particles collide. Debbie Gibbs, principal of IKB Academy, which specialises in preparing students for careers in science and engineering, said

it had been a privilege to view the scale of the technical and engineering challenges at CERN. “This was a unique experience for our young physicists and engineers to witness first-hand the awe-inspiring culmination of years of scientific research coming together to unlock some of the secrets of the universe,” she said. Curtis Grainger, 17, from Longwell Green, said it was the sheer size of the place that had the most impact. “I didn't expect it to be that big – it was humungous,” he said. Imogen McDermott, 18, from Saltford, said: “It was really interesting to see how what we are learning in school is applied in real life. Talking to the professors at CERN has really reignited my enthusiasm for physics.”

Councillor Emma Dixon cuts the ribbon, right; children explore the Secret Garden, above and left

It’s no secret – pupils love new garden! It’s called the Secret Garden, but last month the wraps came off a newly created outdoor space at Saltford C of E Primary School. Pupils and staff welcomed Rev Daile Wilshire, governors and PTA members to see Councillor Emma Dixon, who provided funding for the scheme from her B&NES ward councillor’s initiative money, cut the ribbon on March 17. Designed around ideas from the children, the plan for the garden was drawn up by teacher Neil Baker. Work began in the summer holidays with staff, parents, volunteers and children overseen by teacher Ruth Hayden’s husband Nick.

The garden now features an outdoor stage, sculptures, an arts and crafts area, wildlife corner

and even a “music alley” with chimes. Councillor Dixon, also a parent at the school, said she was “honoured” to be asked to open the garden and that all the work had created a “really special place”. Her donation enabled the school to purchase a carved bench and animal sculptures, which were created by sculptor Andy O’Neill using a lime tree felled during building work at the site. The PTA’s contribution covered a number of features, including wood for the stage and pergola and materials for children to make items for the garden during Arts Week.

Headteacher Dawn Elliott said: “We were very grateful when the local authority agreed to allow the school to create a garden on land adjacent to the school. “I hope that children for many years to come will enjoy watching the garden grow and mature.” Mrs Hayden, the school’s arts and music leader, added: “This project is forming part of our Artsmark Gold award. “Everyone has worked very hard on this project and we are looking forward to using the garden for outside learning, performing on the stage and to hold some of our assemblies.”

FOCUS ON METRO MAYOR ELECTION

A new ‘metro mayor’ with far-reaching powers – but who will get West’s vote? It’s the election no one asked for – so how well will it be supported? The new position of metro mayor for the West of England will be decided by a vote across the region on May 4. Unlike the position of Bristol’s mayor, this post wasn’t created by popular demand. And in 2016 Bath and North East Somerset people voted decisively against having a new mayor with wider powers over Bath and the surrounding communities. But the decision on whether to have a metro mayor was given to the local authorities in the area and, last year, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset councillors backed the plan. North Somerset did not, and will not be part of the new West of England Combined Authority – which will probably become known as Weca. The absence of North

Somerset immediately presents a problem for Weca, it can be argued. The purpose of the authority is to oversee major issues for the region – transport, housing and employment. North Somerset has always been part of discussions on the issues with the other three councils. Now it will be left out of Weca. And with calls for major housing development in North Somerset’s green belt – between the villages of Ashton Vale, Long Ashton and Dundry – this may be one area where the new metro mayor finds they lack influence. So what will Weca be able to do? It will have £30 million a year to spend and several new powers devolved from the Government. It will be able to set up franchised bus services, for example, giving it more influence over bus companies than councils have at present. This will require

an Act of Parliament, however, so won’t happen quickly. It will have broader powers over transport – including responsibility for Key Route Network of local roads. On rail, it will be expected to assess the need for new routes – possibly building stations itself. It will set targets for housebuilding and agree where major developments should be. It will draw up a regional strategy for housing and planning – and it will be able to “call in” planning applications where they are of importance to the whole region. Some of this will mean taking powers – and money – from local councils. Weca is expected to attract business to the region, and help make sure workers have the right skills – for this purpose, it will have powers over adult education. It will also design a Work and Health programme

to help the long-term unemployed with health and disability issues. Whoever the new mayor is, they will have to co-operate. The new authority is led by the metro mayor, with the other members being the mayor of Bristol and the leaders of B&NES and South Gloucestershire councils. One of these council leaders will appointed deputy metro mayor. Some decisions will have to be unanimous – the “spatial strategy” or regional plan will have to be agreed by all the leaders. Other decisions can be by majority vote. Nominations for metro mayor candidates close on April 4, with six people having thrown their hats into the ring by the time we went to press. Below, and continued on Page 29, are the candidates’ statements in alphabetical order.

s a local community campaigner, I’m passionate about our region and that’s why I’m standing to be the first West of England mayor. I’ve combined a successful business career with public service as a local councillor over the last 14 years and I want to use my skills, experience and determination to make our region even better. Our community is a great place to live with a growing economy and new jobs. But success brings demand for more housing – and transport infrastructure is just not keeping up. Local people want to see further improvements to transport and they want to be able to get on the housing ladder more easily. If elected, I will adopt a better approach to development – so the right homes are built in the right places, protecting our green spaces and prioritising urban regeneration. I’m also determined to make transport a priority

F

like a new station at Henbury and Horfield, speeding up the Portway Park and Ride station, and increased services from Sea Mills and Shirehampton stations. The West of England mayor can make a real difference to the lives of people in the West with nearly £1 billion of extra government money and key powers over housing, transport, the economy and jobs. But we need a strong local voice to champion our region, we need a mayor who can work with our Government, local MPs and councillors to get things done instead of using the role to score political points.

or many people within the new West of England combined authority, choosing the region’s first metro mayor will be an important decision for them. Therefore, it’s absolutely crucial that, come May, voters aren’t restricted to choosing between a selection of career politicians that are almost indistinguishable from one another. With me on the ballot, they’ll have the opportunity to vote for someone completely different. If elected to be the new metro mayor, I will work with everyone across the new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, and I firmly believe that direct democracy can and will deliver outstanding levels of service and will ensure all voices are heard. As your local UKIP candidate, I have three commitments. Firstly, as a farmer, I understand the vast importance of the greenbelt and thus I do not want to see our nation

stripped of its prime agricultural land and natural wildlife habitats. This is why I will fight hard to prevent our countryside becoming swamped by overdevelopment, as our countryside must be preserved to be enjoyed by future generations. I will also pledge to get the Bristol and Bath gridlock sorted once and for all. This will be achieved by ending the war on motorists and implementing an integrated transport network where bus, train and road user all work together. Finally, I want to be the voice that represents you, the public. This is why in the first 100 days in office I will create a direct democracy platform so we can shape the West of England together. This will be done so that we can all champion change.

grew up in Gloucestershire and lived in the Bristol area for the last 15 years. After graduating from Swansea University as a mechanical engineer, I joined the RAF as an Engineering Officer. Later I undertook a Masters in business and worked in public services in a number of roles spanning crime and drugs, culture and media and sport. I was the national spokesperson for the FRANK drugs campaign and supported Gloucestershire’s recovery from 2007’s flooding. I spent five years working with Bristol City Council, running the Bristol Green Capital Partnership, and led the team that won the European Green Capital Award. Over 20 years, I have become more active in campaigning on environmental issues and, despite my reservations, I was persuaded to enter politics. I ran to be the Green Party’s Bristol West MP, achieving 23 per cent of the vote, coming a close second to Labour. During the campaign I

saw how the Green Party’s vision and messages of hope connected with residents fed up with the hollow promises from “the greenest government ever”. As metro mayor, we can improve the lives of thousands who live and work in the West of England by investing in better public transport, affordable housing, and jobs that pay a living wage. We must do more to provide people with meaningful work and investing in people. We have the opportunity to be a world leader in the smart cities agenda, creating a strong local economy that protects and regenerates the natural resources which we all enjoy.

y vision is to ensure everyone in the West of England can share equally in our region’s success. The metro mayor is a new role and a chance to change the way things are done. I will put people first, working hard to get the best out of the three local authorities so devolution works for the many, not the few. This election presents an opportunity for us to tackle the inequalities of our housing market, the insecurity of our jobs market and to end the frustrations of our journeys. After the election I will meet with the three leaders of the local authorities and talk to them about their housing plans, where they plan to build, when they plan to build and how many they plan to build. I want to see more social and affordable housing being built, focusing on the areas of greatest need. Getting homes built is essential for the region’s economy and, with

n May 4, we enter a new phase of devolution that will profoundly change the way that our region is run. I have lived in the West of England for the last 40 years and for the first time in my life I see the possibility of a real shift in power from Westminster to local people. Last year three councils in the West of England – Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire – agreed to a devolution deal which will allow our region to determine its own future, as well as an additional £30 million in extra funding from Government. This is an unprecedented opportunity for the West of England and it is essential that we do not waste it. Too many of our roads, buses and trains are overcrowded, with congestion damaging our local economy and air quality so I will take the lead on transport to find green solutions so people can get to work and get around better. To help employers to allow staff to work from home more often, I will push for improved broadband in all areas. Imagine the difference to our congestion and air quality if commuters stayed at home one day a week. he election of a “metro” mayor for the West of England is an exciting opportunity to take our region forward. London has benefitted from the strategic leadership of its mayor. Now we will have the same powers and new sources of money so that we can make the big decisions locally, rather than asking for permission or funding from the Government. The new metro mayor will be able to invest in the local economy, with £120million available in the first four years. I will invest in cheap start-up space for new businesses and social enterprises. I want to encourage tech and digital entrepreneurs, the fast-growing industries of the future. I will also support those businesses that are developing a low carbon, sustainable economy. Now the community is being urged to help prove a little kindness can go a long way indeed by getting behind a drive to make Keynsham the first “Kind Town”. The Kind Keynsham campaign is being launched by Keynsham Action Network and aims to encourage and celebrate those random good deeds that cost little or nothing, tackle the spread of “doom and gloom” and help residents feel connected. The group is hosting Keynsham Kindness Day on Monday, April 24, from 2pm to 6pm at Somerdale Pavilion with local people joining representatives from a host of community organisations to learn more about the campaign.

Special guests include business psychologist and compassion expert Harpal Dhatt, who has run “Kindness Cafes” in London and Nepal, young naturalist Mya-Rose Craig, who campaigns against bullying, local children’s author Paris Brosnan and more. n NEWS

Why ‘priceless’ piece of town’s heritage needs you to help preserve its future A charity that has been fundraising to protect Keynsham’s medieval church for almost 40 years is launching a new phase of activities – and wants residents to join them. The Friends of St John’s Committee tell readers more about their plans and an event for anyone who would like to get involved Residents are invited to become part of preserving a “treasure trove” of history when Keynsham’s St John’s Church hosts a wine and cheese evening next month. The Friends of St John’s charity is holding the free event on Thursday, May 11, which is open to anyone interested in helping to protect the heritage of the town. The evening will include an illustrated talk about the church’s history featuring some fascinating historical snippets, and a chance to hear more about the charity itself. The Friends of St John’s have for the last few years been going through a quiet phase, with no fundraising or social events organised since 2014. This is because over the last few years some of the founding members of the charity have retired after many years of service. This means there is a particular opportunity at this moment for those interested in history and who care for the Keynsham’s heritage to become involved in the Friends of St John’s. The opportunity is not simply to become a member (at only £20 a year) but to join the committee to become part of the team that is hoped will take the charity on to its new and exciting next phase. The charity was founded in 1990 as The Bridges Society, which was linked with the church, but as a completely separate organisation. Its purpose is to provide for the restoration, upkeep and improvement of the fabric of the

parish church and churchyard. It has had a distinguished history, contributing over £50,000 towards maintaining and improving the church since the charity’s foundation. The Friends of St John’s are so very important, because the Parish Church of St John the Baptist is arguably the most significant historical building still standing in the town of Keynsham. First built around 1270, it has been much altered over the years and is full of fascinating artefacts from the last 700 years. It is fully described in the book St John the Baptist, Keynsham by Elizabeth White published in 2005 and on sale in the church for £5. As the largest historical building in continuous use for its

original purpose in Keynsham it is a priceless part of the town’s heritage. It is not the oldest historical artefact – the Roman mosaics in the library are much older; nor is it the largest building with a history – the former Fry’s chocolate factory is much larger; nor is it the only historical building still in use – there are many houses around the town built centuries before today, but as a historical building the church is quite unique. It is firstly exceptional because of its age: most other large medieval buildings have gone. Secondly it is unique because of its character: it has accumulated over the centuries memories connected with the unique history of Keynsham. It therefore stands as a kind of elder statesman watching the comings and goings of each new generation, collecting a little something from each one as it passes through. Furthermore the building is witness to many personal moments: the happy family gathering of a christening or a wedding, and also the poignant and sombre moments of a community gathering to mourn at a funeral. Thirdly it is important as one of the largest community spaces in the town: with its excellent acoustics it is a favourite venue for concerts. Fourthly it is unique in having been a place of prayer for 700

years: and continues in regular daily use as the Anglican parish church of the town. The charity is looking to develop a variety of activities that will raise the profile of the Friends of St John’s charity, its work in support of the fabric of the historic building, and offer members activities that are enjoyable and informative. Ideas include: l The development of an annual lecture relating to such subjects as the history of the church (in conjunction with the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society) free to members of the charity l The development of social activities for members such as an annual tour to a place of historical interest l An annual concert in the church free to members of the charity The committee warmly invites you to the free evening on Thursday, May 11. Come and be part of preserving a building that belongs to the whole community, and be yourself part of its history. If you would like to come, either call the secretary John Lye on 0117 986 4683 or email johnlye33@btinternet.com so the committee can anticipate numbers, but you can just come at the last minute too – there will be room. We look forward very much to meeting you.

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

This photograph will bring back memories for some who attended Wellsway School in the 1970s, a time when schools had more freedom than today to bring imagination into their curriculum. It shows pupils tending the allotments on the west side of the Wellsway, near Gooseberry Lane, in May 1975.

Saddling up for better fitness and fun People of all levels of fitness are invited to saddle up and join a Bristol-based charity’s regular group bike rides. Bike Minded, run by Life Cycle UK, organises free outings on the area’s cycle paths and quiet roads, with forthcoming events including a cycle ride exploring the history of the Bristol Riots, a trip to Beese’s Tea Rooms, foraging in Stoke Park, fish and chips at Chew Valley Lake and a pub lunch at Saltford. The aim is to give people the chance to improve their fitness and wellbeing, take up free one-to-one cycle training if they need it and even get help buying a low-cost bike for those on low incomes. There will be plenty of chance to find out more when Bike Minded attends a Cycling Activity Day at Bristol Family Cycling Centre, Bamfield, Hengrove, on June 10 from 10am to 4pm, when there will be bikes to try and buy, a traffic-free track for children

Cyclists on a free Bike Minded group ride and less confident riders, 4.5km rides with LifeCycle UK for novices and more. Viv Maginnis, coordinator of

the Bike Minded project, said: “A bike is such a simple invention but can do so much! I love riding my bike, it’s changed my life – it

has given me confidence, helped improve my fitness - I’ve never been a ‘sporty’ person! – and my passion for cycling has even led me to get a job where I get to promote all the benefits of a bike. “Riding a bike can give you freedom to move around your city or explore new places, it is a cheap and reliable form of transport - I save hundreds a year not having to pay to run a car or use public transport – and every time you ride a bike, that is one less person causing air pollution and congestion, it keeps you fit and makes you feel good!” Life Cycle UK is also looking for keen cyclists to volunteer to support people on Bike Minded rides. To find out more about Bike Minded, volunteering or joining a ride, contact Viv at bikeminded@lifecycleuk.org.uk, call Life Cycle at 0117 353 4580 or visit www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/ wellbeing

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome On Sunday, March 19, the threatened rain did not materialise as 20 walkers set off for the 3.5-mile circular walk from the Memorial Park Cafe around Stockwood Vale and back. Once we got past the builtup area, we soon encountered mud, which was a feature of the walk throughout the countryside section. Crossing three fields of horses also proved an interesting diversion. An unusual hazard was the possibility of interrupting the Sunday morning Stockwood clay pigeon shoot but, talking to the organiser before the event, they kindly stopped their activities, and

keynshamvoice n NEWS

allowed us to pass, for which we thank them. It was a happy bunch that arrived 90 minutes later back at the cafe for some well-deserved refreshment. Even Morris the dog enjoyed it.

Coming up

Keynsham Walking Festival Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9 See details on page 52 Folly Farm Sunday, May 7 Starting from the Fox & Hounds car park, we catch the Dial-aRide minibus to Folly Farm, for an extended walk around this community working farm. Bring a picnic and admire the views. The actual route will depend on conditions on the day.

We are pleased to report that Keynsham Walkers are Welcome have just been awarded £1,000 in the Tesco Bags of Help Community Award scheme – more details in next month’s issue.

Pulling out all the stops for fete’s 40th Whitchurch Village Fete has been welcoming crowds to Greensmore Fields on the A37 for 40 years – and the birthday won’t go unnoticed! Taking place over the August bank holiday weekend, August 26 to 28, there will be a 40-metre dash for 40-year-olds, a 40ft fancy dress race for children and organisers are hoping to see 40 dogs in the dog show as well as 40 giant or oddly shaped fruit or veg in the flower show marquee – so get growing now, they say. A spokesperson said: “It would also be great to have 40 new volunteers to help over the weekend or on the Bank Holiday Monday, and 40 stalls at the car

boot sale on the Sunday.” Details of an event in the marquee on the Saturday are to be confirmed. Anyone who would like to help or have a stall at the fete on Monday, August 28, can email whitchurchvillagefete@hotmail. co.uk for more information or a booking form, or call Ashton on 01275 832148. hey say variety is the spice of life – and Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group is currently having a Royal Variety Performance of wildlife walks and talks, writes chairman Dave Sage. On February 17, members aged from four months to four score years enjoyed Sheila Quin’s expert guidance around Bristol Downs, looking at crusty, leafy and shrubby lichens, which indicate the clean air quality above the Avon Gorge. Some have amazing names, like Flavoparmelia, Evernia and Ramelina. A great walk capped off with a tasty lunch in the Downs café! The March talk was nothing short of inspirational. Alex Rhodes, a young zoologist, naturalist, photographer and filmmaker kept us enthralled and entertained about bird-ringing expeditions to Fair Isle off the coast of Scotland, Peru and Falstabo, the famous migration bottleneck in Southern Sweden.

He surely has a great future in wildlife broadcasting, following in the footsteps of Simon King, Mike Dilger – and, who knows, even Sir David Attenborough! Remember the name! Our March walk was around Bath’s exotic botanic gardens. Liz Wintle guided 16 of us around the “champion trees” collection, including a coastal redwood with a 17ft girth (that’s five people’s arm spans!) and an estimated 35m high, fragrant incense cedar, Arizona cypress, and many more. The pick of the numerous birds singing was the repetitive piping of a nuthatch. Coming up in April is a walk with Gill Brown around Towerhouse wood, near Nailsea, looking for signs of the elusive dormouse, awakening from its winter slumbers. The walk follows Gill’s memorable talk back in October on these endearing rodents. April’s indoor talk is on Friday,

n NEWS Chance to discuss the big issues of life Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford are hosting an event on behalf of an organisation called Grave Talk. It provides an opportunity for people to talk about the big issues of death, dying and funerals. Aided by questions covering a number of key areas associated with death, people will be at ease in a safe environment to share their thoughts and listen to others, say organisers. The event is not suitable for those who are newly bereaved, nor does it offer a counselling service. There will be two opportunities to attend the event, both at St John’s Church Hall – on Thursday, April 20, from 10am to noon, or on Wednesday, June 14, from 7pm to 9pm. To book a place on either session, please email juneannel@ talktalk.net or telephone 0117 986 0097.

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Crocuses and a big clean-up – spring must finally be here! Bulbs planted in winter are transforming Queens Road and Keynsham in Bloom is celebrating its first award of the year. Chair Denise James looks at what’s coming up in the next few weeks. Keynsham Station Clean-Up

Our first work party of the year on March 4 saw Keynsham in Bloom volunteers joining forces with Keynsham Wombles as part of the Great British Spring Clean. Our volunteers litter-picked Keynsham Station car park and the woodland area. Although we ended up having to dodge the showers, we collected 18 bags of litter and general rubbish. Our volunteers were grateful for the refreshments that were provided by Great Western Railway. Sadly parts of the community garden are not looking their best, due to the ongoing works being carried out at the station. We are in the process of drawing up new planting designs for the garden and have been encouraged to hear that there may be a possibility of some support from GWR and the station contractor.

Purple4Polio Planting Project Our volunteers, along with Keynsham Rotary, Community at 67 and St Keyna Green Team finally got the reward for their hard work in November last year when over 3,000 purple crocus were planted out along Queens Road. It had become quite a discussion point over the last few weeks – we were all wondering if and when the crocus would finally show their faces. They have now made a welcome appearance along Queens Road, much to the delight of residents and Community at 67, which is based in Queens Road. We hope to be able to plant

Cleaning up at Keynsham Station, above; the crocuses put on a show in Queens Road and the five-star award for Keynsham Memorial Park, below

more bulbs in the area later this year.

Pride in Parks Award

We collected our first award of the year at the South West in Bloom Spring Seminar on March 2, which was held at the Palace Hotel in Torquay. Keynsham Memorial Park was judged last year as part of the Pride in Parks Award, and achieved the top award of five stars. Toby Buckland, a well-known horticulturist and TV presenter, and Daren Share MBE, head of Birmingham City Parks, handed out the awards. More than 28 parks were judged throughout the South West and this is the second year running that the Memorial Park has achieved this prestigious award. Richard Taylor, who judged the park, commented on the good partnership working between B&NES and

Keynsham Town Council. He also made reference to some of the community groups that use the park, Transition Keynsham’s “pick your own” allotment area, the music festival and concerts at the Bandstand during the summer months. Given the current budget cuts that local authorities have to make, we are fortunate that B&NES considers our parks and open spaces to be a valuable asset to local communities and is continuing to maintain our parks to a high standard.

The Great Bike Trail 2017

Our Great Bike Trail project is now well under way and we currently have more than 35 bikes ready for painting. It is our intention to have all the bikes painted and distributed by the end of May. This will allow for them to be planted up ready for display during the weekend of

June 2, 3 and 4. By the time the RHS South West in Bloom judges judge Keynsham, we should have some wonderful bike displays. If anyone would like to help out with the painting of the bikes, please contact us via the town council offices at 15-17 Temple Street.

Children’s Colouring Competition

Don’t forget our first competition of the year takes place soon, our Children’s Colouring Competition. Entry forms are available from the town council offices at 15-17 Temple Street and posters are also being delivered to the schools. The competition is open to primary and junior school age groups. Closing date for entries is Friday, April 28, prizes will be given out at 1st Keynsham Scouts’ annual plant sale on Saturday, May 13.

Chiropractor returns to Keynsham

A chiropractor originally from Keynsham has returned to town to offer his chiropractic services to the people in the community where he grew up. After training in South Wales, Tony practised in Keynsham between 2009 and 2012 before moving to develop his knowledge and skills in his wife’s native Sweden. Since his return to the UK in 2015, Tony has set up a clinic in Paulton and is expanding his business into Keynsham, working out of The Surgery in Severn Way. Tony’s passion is simply helping people to improve or regain their health and quality of life. He continues to be inspired by the patients he sees who are truly committed to overcoming their problems and improving health with a natural approach. Growing up, Tony was into sport. As a teenager he swam for Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club and represented the county in swimming and running. However, he occasionally experienced swimming-related shoulder pain and in his first career as a telecom engineer, he

endured some back problems. He also suffered a knee injury at 21. This led to him developing a keen interest in health, specifically relating to the joints and the neuromusculoskeletal system. Inspired by the science and philosophy underpinning the chiropractic “whole body” approach, Tony decided on a career change. He enrolled at The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic in 2004 and hasn’t looked back. Tony is committed to advancing public understanding and appreciation of natural chiropractic health care for people of all ages. He is firmly rooted in a preventative approach, which often includes nutrition, exercise and lifestyle advice and, of course, top quality chiropractic treatment. He is registered with the General Chiropractic Council as well as the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare. He is also a member of the British Chiropractic Association. With tickets for the walking festival and social evening already available from Keynsham Town Council, there has been a steady demand for places on the walks. There are a lot of options, from short easy walks for the beginner to longer treks for more experienced walkers, and they all start in Keynsham. Tickets are £3

A new departure for us this festival is the inclusion of two walks led by qualified Nordic walking instructor Alison Jordan. Numbers are limited on these walks so early booking is advisable. Another “first” for us is two beginners’/taster walks. These are short walks around the Memorial Park for those who want to ease their way into walking, or for those who just want a short amble. We are again fortunate to have both Saltford Walkers and Somerdale Ramblers joining us and leading different walks around the Keynsham countryside. Experienced members of Keynsham Walkers are Welcome are also involved in leading walks. The festival finale on the Sunday afternoon, starting at 1.30pm by the Bandstand in the Memorial Park, is a family event, with a fun nature trail. To help the proceedings along there will be an appearance by the Frozen Princesses, Jimmy Mac will be doing his magic with balloons and local face painter Caitlin Brennan will be on hand to add a bit of colour. On Saturday evening there is a social event in the Scout Hall starting at 7.30pm, when local filmmaker, author and naturalist Ruth Coleman will be giving a talk and showing a film entitled The River Avon. Tickets for this event are £6 and include a free drink on arrival and a finger buffet. Tickets are again available from Keynsham Town Council offices at 15-17 Temple Street or on 0117 986 8683. You can also book tickets for this and all the walks online at wrwkeynsham@ outlook.com Thanks go to Tesco and Keynsham Town Council for their generous sponsorship of this event. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The ingenious Mr Padmore

A late alteration to the planned programme meant that the society’s March meeting heard an excellent account by Tony Coverdale, chairman of the Saltford Brass Mill Project, of the works and achievements of civil engineer John Padmore. Born in the late 17th century, between about 1710 and his death in 1735 Padmore designed and constructed a huge range of projects, mainly in the Bristol and Bath areas. His projects included vacuum pumping engines, the floating harbour at Sea Mills, probably the brass mills at Saltford and Keynsham (Chew Mill, in the Park), the Avon Navigation, which included the locks at Keynsham, Swineford, Kelston and Saltford, dockside cranes and the tramway to bring stone from Ralph Allen’s mines at Combe Down to the River Avon at Bath. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about John Padmore is that he is almost unknown, not even making an entry in Wikipedia. Comparisons with Brunel in the following century are inevitable: Padmore did not seek publicity and in reality he probably did not have the personality to drive forward the grand projects of IKB. Nonetheless, his technical achievements were enormous and we only have to walk to Keynsham Lock or Saltford Brass Mill to be reminded of them.

Keynsham’s lost convenience – can you help? Old photographs of the centre of Keynsham – such as the one below – show a weighbridge built into the road and, adjacent to it, a distinctive booth with a conical roof that housed the measuring

At some date after the war the urinals were demolished and filled in, although the exact date is not recorded. If you have a picture that includes the entrance to this forgotten public facility, or know the date of demolition, the society would be pleased to hear from you. April meeting – Great Houses of the Gordano Valley The entrance to Swineford Lock , designed by John Padmore equipment. It was rather unusual to have such a device in the centre of a high street but the weighbridge was built by the local gas company to weigh deliveries of coke to the gas works at the bottom of Dapps Hill. In 1928, demand from the new Fry factory meant that gas had to be supplied from Bristol so the Keynsham gas works closed, although by then the weighbridge had not been used for several years. The Bristol Gas Company offered the site to the local council which had been looking for somewhere to site an underground urinal in the town. It was a further four years before the council invited tenders for the construction of the urinals and they were completed in 1933. Brian Vowles, in the course of his extensive research for the society, has unearthed the drawings of the installation in the County Records Office at Taunton, where they were deposited with other local planning documents.

Over the years the society has accumulated a substantial archive of photographs of the town centre, with many of the High Street and some of Bath Hill. But we do not have a single one that shows the entrance to this public convenience. Presumably, it was a location that photographers stood

The last meeting of our 2016/17 talks programme will be presented by Sandy Tebbutt, Portishead historian and author. Her subject will be “Great Houses of the Gordano Valley” and the talk will be on Monday, April 24, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome. Not Dead Enough, Bristol Hippodrome

T

he first thing that strikes you about this modern murder mystery is the clever set. A raised section at the back of the stage houses a well-equipped pathology lab, complete with a wall of fridges which victims are pulled in and out of for their post-mortems, letting off clouds of freezing air when the doors are opened. Plenty of action and dialogue happens over the autopsy table. At ground (stage) level, to the front, there’s a police station office and interview room. Phone conversations take place across the different areas and through suggested two-way mirrors. This is a cross between a classic Agatha Christie, a gritty cop drama and a shiny CSI episode, with some fun detective banter pulled off nicely by leading man Shane Richie and his supporting cast. There were a few places where it wasn’t clear if the laughter was intentional or not, notably the dramatic event before the interval – the smattering of audience titters possibly not quite

the shock and awe reaction that was planned. That aside, the plot cleverly gets your brain working – nudging you towards one solution then another, leading you cheekily in the wrong direction until you reach the ‘a-ha!’ moment, as you and the police solve the crime at more or less the same time. This is a fun fast-paced production, based on the book by

prolific crime novelist Peter James. Many of his books have been adapted into plays. This show, the third featuring DS Roy Grace, is the world premiere production of Not Dead Enough – definitely worth a watch when it comes round again. Beccy Golding l Not Dead Enough is on a tour of the UK until July 1, including Cardiff from June 13-17.

People are invited to raise a glass or two to local railway heritage with an English wine-tasting evening at Avon Valley Railway. The attraction is hosting the event at Bitton Station on the summer solstice – Wednesday, June 21 – when there will be more than 70 wines to choose from, as well as locally produced gin and liqueurs. There will also be locally produced cheeses to enjoy and the station buffet will be open. Tickets for the evening, which runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, are £15 per person and proceeds will go to the Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust. The event is supported by Waitrose and English Wine Producers. Wine-makers taking part include Mumfords, Quoins, Dunleavy, Aldwick, Oatley, Wraxall, Langham Estate, Smith & Jones Wines, Three Choirs and Castlebrook as well as gin and liqueur producer Bramley and Gage. Eastertide The first holiday of a new year, Which welcomes new life. The trees are a kaleidoscope of green And all the shrubs have new leaves and flowers. Bright colours chase away the winter gloom. New born chicks little balls of yellow feathers. The animals awake from hibernation And begin to search for food and nesting.

Local solicitors celebrate raising £31,350 for Bath hospitals during RUH Make a Will Month

Where there’s a will... there’s a way to help local hospitals!

The birds also build their nests Ready for their new families. Bees and butterflies start their work. The bulbs planted in the fall are now budding. On Easter day excited children Go on hunts for chocolate eggs and bunnies! And people meet to celebrate the season. New life and bright colours all around. Erica Andrews

Keynsham Creative Writers meet at Keynsham Library on the second and fourth Monday of the month and new members are always welcome.

An impressive £31,350 has been raised for local hospitals with the help of solicitors in Keynsham. During September, solicitors from FDC Law and Wards in the town joined many others across Bath and North East Somerset to take part in the RUH Make a Will Month. Residents were offered the chance to draw up a will at a reduced rate while the solicitors donated their fees to the Forever Friends Appeal, which supports the Royal United Hospital and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. Little Nut Brown Hare is desperately trying to express how much she loves Big Nut Brown Hare. She loves Big Nut Brown Hare as much as she can stretch her arms, jump high and run fast. Yet Big Nut Brown Hare can always outdo the little hare by running faster or stretching further. But, of course, the end has a sweet twist. The book is very well illustrated and beautifully written. A real Easter treat!

Images that show A group of amateur photographers are inviting people to take a look at Keynsham through their eyes with an exhibition at the town’s library. The display is the result of a project called Snap & Stroll, which encourages better mental health through photography. Participants learn some digital photography skills and then use them to capture both natural and man-made sights around town – from familiar landmarks to the tiniest details. Sessions were held at Community@67 and facilitated by local participatory photography organisation In the Picture CIC. The group had the chance to discuss their work, take part in group activities, edit their images and finally display their photos in a curated exhibition. Keynsham: Through a Lens is on show at Keynsham Library, on the Art Wall, from April 1 to April 8. The Snap & Stroll project was funded by Creativity Works and Bath College’s Community Learning Service and supported by Sirona care and health.

Are you smarter than the 20 per cent of women who don’t take this test?

Women are told: Don’t miss out – screening can be a life saver. It could mean the difference between life and death, yet figures show that 20 per cent of women still do not attend their cervical screening appointments. Consultant gynaecologist Dr Amit Patel urges women in the region to make sure they are up to date with their smear tests. Dr Patel, who practices at Spire Bristol Hospital, said: “Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. The signs that it may develop can be often be spotted early and it can be treated before it even fully starts. “While around 750 women each year in the UK die of cervical cancer every year, figures show that many of those who develop the disease have not been screened regularly. The single biggest risk factor for developing cervical cancer is not being regularly screened, yet it is thought that as many as one million women a year are missing out*.” Women aged 25 to 49 are invited to attend cervical screening, or smear tests, every three years; those aged 50 to 64 are invited every five years. The screening can detect abnormal (pre-cancerous) cells in the cervix in order to prevent cervical cancer. Dr Patel said: “It is important to get the message across that cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but instead allows for

detection of abnormalities at an early stage. “The routine of attending a cervical screening should be an important part of every woman’s health regime but for many women this message just isn’t getting through. Early detection is key to increasing survival rates so educating everyone about the disease, its symptoms and ways to prevent it is very important.” From pregnancy, childbirth

and menopause – women’s bodies go through a lot. And a variety of health conditions can affect the female body and reproductive organs – such as painful fibroids, vaginal prolapse and cancer. Spire Bristol Hospital is hosting a complimentary event for women to attend and talk about gynaecological cancers. The session will see Dr Patel discuss everything from risks, prevention, screening and early detection of

gynaecological cancers. Should you, a relative or friend have any worries or want more information then please book onto our event on Thursday 30 March, 7pm to 8.30pm. Lamps a brighter idea than landfill

with interior designer Zoe Hewitt

It’s no secret that Bristol is an absolute hotbed of creativity and forward thinking, and increasingly we can add design excellence to that list. Bishopston resident Laura Pendlebury is a product designer specialising in unique lights made from old golf clubs, also known as Baffy Nook. With a background in spatial planning and teaching art, Laura has wholeheartedly embraced the ‘cradle to cradle’ approach to design by sourcing her raw materials ethically and sustainably (initially from Bristol homelessness charity Emmaus), and upcycling them into something new. Golf clubs cannot easily be recycled or reprocessed due to the mixed metal content, so repurposing is the best way to rescue them from an eternity in landfill. Laura’s designs incorporate the entire club, not just parts, which apart from improving the green credentials, also preserves and celebrates the

original craftsmanship that went into making the clubs. Impressively she personally manufactures each one by hand, from the sanding to the metalwork. Using paints to add punches of colour to some of the clubs, different woods, flexes

and shades, no two are the same. These witty and stylish lights have appeal beyond just those in golfing circles, and rightly so. To find out more and brighten up any dark corners in your home, you can browse and buy online at www. baffynook.com

Keynsham Rugby are in pole position With just three games remaining in the Western Counties North League, Keynsham’s first team is in first place, seven points clear of the two chasing sides, writes our correspondent. Their run-in includes games against the current second and third-place sides (Chew Valley RFC and Chosen Hill Former Pupils RFC) so promotion to South West 1 league is no formality. The season thus far has seen the team win all but two of their games – a truly dismal performance at Wells RFC and a close-run thing against Avonmouth. Both losses were subsequently turned around in the return fixtures, where the highlight was when the boys in black and amber (playing in red tiger stripes!) came back from a 21-3 deficit at half time, with two injuries to prop forwards, to prevail 29-21. They secured a vital try bonus to boot.

Keynsham about to score their bonus try versus Saracens On Saturday, April 1, they travel to Cheltenham RFC, who are always tough opponents, particularly at home, and a win would make the following week’s fixture against Chew Valley an absolute crunch game. To win both of these games would secure the top spot and make the final game on April 22, away at Chosen Hill, a formality. The club

is hoping this will be the case but have organised a coach for spectators so that a goodly crowd can give the team their vocal backing – it will be a celebration or a wake! The second team is comfortably placed mid-table in their league, winning 11 and losing 10, and the other senior side is just above bottom spot.

Recent winners in the Dennis Cockbaine Lottery at the club were: December – £1,000 Bob Baber (84), £80 Sally Klewin (17); January – £100 Phil Healey (138), £50 Jim Brooks (74); February – £100 Steve Capon (113), £50 OJ Cowan (103); March – £100 Sean Whittle (152), £50 James Hurrell-Smith (123).

n SPORT l Saturday, April 8 Warminster Town 3pm kick-off

KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field March was another topsyturvy month for Keynsham Town’s First Team in the Toolstation Western League Division One.

The month began with a hugely disappointing 3-0 defeat in the mud at Welton Rovers. After a couple of early half chances for the Ks, slack defending gifted two goals to home centre-forward Aaron Seviour before halftime. In conditions that clearly weren’t to their liking, the visitors never looked like mounting a secondhalf comeback, and a misplaced back pass gave Seviour his first senior hat-trick on the hour. Manager Chris King said: “This result was tough to take. We weren’t helped by the state of the pitch and as always it is a real leveller, it helped them more than it helped us on the day and bad decision-making cost us dearly. Missing three defenders from the squad didn’t help matters and it has been a shame this season that key players have missed a few key games. It’s not an excuse, but I have found it disappointing, especially as we have been pushing at the top of the league this time round.” The only home game of the month saw Radstock Town visit Crown Fields the following week. In a good, open contest, another excellent crowd of 107 saw the spoils shared in a 2-2 draw. After the visitors shell-shocked Keynsham with a goal after only three minutes, it took until the 43rd minute for the Ks to get on level terms. An excellent cross from Ben Harris was expertly whipped in at the near post by leading scorer Matt Brown. The Ks took the lead right after the break, when a surging run by left-back Nathan Curnock saw him bundle the ball home at the far post. Although the hosts had a lot of possession, they could not extend their advantage, and Radstock had the better chances

Matt Curnock in action against Radstock Town until they finally grabbed the equaliser with a quarter of an hour remaining. Keynsham were on the road again a week later with their first ever visit to Darby Way, the picturesque home of Western League newcomers Bishops Lydeard. After a few half chances at either end, the Ks took a deserved lead on 24 minutes with a lovely goal by Ben Harris, who drove infield and curled a shot into the bottom corner. However, the lead only lasted five minutes, when slack marking presented an easy finish for the hosts’ centre-forward. The game was effectively decided in the first six minutes of the second half. On 48 minutes, excellent work by Matt Curnock down the right created an opening for Matt Brown, who tucked the chance away with his customary efficiency. Then three minutes later, after great harrying by the Ks forward line forced a defensive error, Ben Harris whipped a cross in and a defender took the ball off Kyle Box’s toes only to blast the ball into his own net from 20 yards. The home side reduced the deficit in the 68th minute with a neat move punishing some statuesque Keynsham defending. However, the points were sealed on 81 minutes, when another great cross by Harris was headed

home from close range by Brown for his second goal. The Ks closed the game out with ease to win 4-2. The last league game of March saw the Ks visit Calne Town. On a beautiful spring afternoon, Keynsham got off to the perfect start when midfielder Matt Curnock surged through a stationary defence and shot home from 20 yards. When Matt Brown made it 2-0 with a customary close-range finish after 20 minutes, his 27th goal of the season, it looked plain sailing. However, they failed to kill off their hosts and had young keeper Ben Nicholls to thank for keeping a clean sheet with a wonderful one-handed save from a piledriver just before the break. The second half had little to report, but it was another vital win for Keynsham Town. Unfortunately this article went to press before Keynsham’s Somerset Premier Cup semi-final at home to Southern League opponents Taunton Town on March 28 – this match will be covered in next month’s review. The Ks are on the road at Easter, playing Hengrove Athletic on Good Friday (12pm kick-off) and Devizes Town on Easter Monday (3pm kick-off). Their last two home games are as follows:

l Saturday, April 29 Ashton & Backwell United 3pm kick-off The club’s Reserve and A Teams have also had brilliant seasons to date, both sitting in fourth position in their respective leagues. The Reserves have won six of their eight game since the turn of the year, with forward Liam Downer in prime form with nine goals from five appearances. The A Team have won four out of six since January 1 and have also reached the semi-finals of the Bristol & Suburban League’s KitCo Goulding Cup. Off the field, the club’s “Forecast 3” prize pot has finally been won, after rolling over for seven months! The lucky winner was Dan White, who scooped a massive £1,484 and was said to be “over the moon” with his windfall. Club secretary Julian French said: “The Forecast 3 has given a massive financial boost for us this season, with over £1,650 being raised to help with the running of the club, and the same amount being paid out to our loyal supporters in prize money. “In times of ever-increasing administration costs, this kind of income is the lifeblood of a club like Keynsham Town FC and I am so grateful that people have been able to help us. The competition will run until the end of the season and will definitely reappear in August.” Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

With the top two getting promoted to the Premier Division, this is how the league table looks going into the final month of the season: First Division Hengrove Wellington KEYNSHAM Cheddar

The club formed in 1917 as part of Fry’s Chocolate Factory Athletic Club. The club first played at the County Ground in Ashley Down, Bristol, after Fry’s bought the ground in 1916. The green was built in the mid-1890s by Gloucestershire cricketer WG Grace. Bristol Arrow used the green in the early years before Fry’s bought it, after which Bristol Arrow moved to their current green in Redland in 1918. Fry’s remained at the County Ground until 1932 when chocolate production had moved to Somerdale in Keynsham. In the early years, 75 per cent of the membership of the club had to be workers at the factory. One of the highlights of the bowls calendar was the Interdepartmental Competition played between different sections of the factory in the 1950s and 1960s. Success on the green for the club has been limited over the years. The club’s first run of success came in the 1980s with it won the Bristol South West League in 1979 and 1980, with three more runners-up positions across the divisions. With some individual successes over the next 20 years, it wasn't until 2012 that Fry’s would return to championship status, winning the Bristol & District League Division 4. In 2015, Frys came runners-up in Division 3 gaining promotion to Division 2, where a fourth placed

finish was achieved in 2016. The club has also reached two semifinals in recent years, with 2015 seeing a remarkable run in the Somerset Wedmore Plate. Last year, Fry’s reached the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey Plate semi-final. The club provides a good range of friendlies, competitive games and social bowling and is open to anyone to play bowls at different levels. Preparations for the centenary season have been under way all winter, with club members overhauling the grounds. During the earlier part of the close season, the club’s original changing room underwent a restoration, also by members, ensuring a part of club history will remain for many years. The highlight of the centenary season is a game against the Somerset Bowls Association

Ground is gleaming as bowlers celebrate 60 years’ play in park

Bathed in glorious sunshine Keynsham Bowling Club’s green is in immaculate condition in readiness for the new season, writes our correspondent. How different the scene looks compared to when bowls started some 60 years ago in 1957. The club then had a newly laid green and a storage shed for the equipment. Meetings were held in the Lamb and Lark Hotel on the High Street, while the Drill Hall, which is now the home of Keynsham Gym, was used to serve teas to the visiting sides. Now there is an attractive clubhouse which is home to a bar and kitchen. In addition there are four sets of changing

facilities to cater for the home and away teams of ladies and gents. The Memorial Park is quite rightly referred to as the jewel in Keynsham’s crown, and Keynsham Bowling Club is proud

that it has been able to enhance that reputation for 60 years. During that period, many playing members, both ladies and gents, have represented Somerset County and two of

the current membership, David Bendall and Barrie Davis, have served as the County President. One of the members who can recall much of the change is the club president John Mead, who this year celebrates 50 years of membership. Reflecting on this, John said: “The club is where it is today as a result of hard work from members past and present. It should be proud of the fact that when it started it was as a mixed club (not all clubs were), with equal recognition to ladies and gents, something that will enable it to go from strength to strength in the future.” The membership of 2017 will say Amen to that!
