Shoppers take a stand on plastic at the checkouts Around 40 people took part in a supermarket shop with a difference in Keynsham, removing all the plastic from their goods and leaving it at the checkouts. The peaceful protest at the town’s Tesco store on March 24 aimed to highlight the amount of plastic packaging on the food we buy and call for retailers to take action. Spokesperson Helen Stone said the protesters filled two trolleys with plastic packaging

after each purchasing just a small amount of items. The protest was inspired by the screening of A Plastic Ocean in Keynsham last summer, a documentary looking at pollution in the world’s seas, and a small group of friends decided to take action and see if anyone else wanted to join them. Helen said: “We were very pleased that around 40 local people joined us – a couple even came from Bath. The staff gave us a friendly reception and we

handed fliers to other shoppers on recycling.” The organisers also wrote to Tesco asking it to reveal the amount of plastic it generates, to put more funding towards recycling and to phase plastic out “as a matter of urgency”. The aim is to now take similar protests to other local supermarkets and inspire other people to do the same in their own areas. A Facebook page – Keynsham Turn to Page 3

Buying a home? You might need a 216% pay rise...

The average full-time worker living in Bath and North East Somerset would need a hefty 216 per cent pay rise to be able to buy their own home in the area, a new report has revealed. A study released by the National Housing Federation named B&NES the most expensive place to live in the West of England, with Bristol second and South Gloucestershire the cheapest. Using house price data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the organisation’s Home Truths 2016/17 report says the average home in B&NES now costs £381,089 – 13.8 times the area’s average income of £27,570. It means a household would need to earn £87,106 to secure an 80 per cent mortgage. Bristol, meanwhile, has an average house price of £290,197, meaning a household would need an income of £66,331 for an 80 per cent mortgage, while average earnings in the city are £26,551. In South Gloucestershire, an income of £62,806 would secure an 80 per cent mortgage on the average £274,777 home – with households in the area bringing in an annual average of £27,253. Meanwhile, rents across B&NES are also the highest out of the three areas, with tenants paying an average of £1,190 per month. In Bristol the figure is £1,025 and in South Gloucestershire it is £929, says the report. The National Housing Federation, which represents housing associations in England, says the picture is similar across the whole of the South West, with average house prices now 10 times their areas’ typical salaries. The report points to a shortfall of new homes as one of the reasons for the growing gap and calls for more land to be made available to housing associations. Nikki Knowles, external affairs manager for the National Housing Federation, said: “It’s disheartening to see how out

of reach home ownership is for most young people while average rents are spiralling out of control. “With land values at a premium and costs sky rocketing, delivering the amount of affordable homes the sub-region needs often proves very difficult. Ultimately, to deliver the homes the sub-region desperately needs, housing associations need more land to build on. Rather than continuing to sell public land to the highest bidder, public land needs to be made available for social housing. “Housing associations are key to solving the housing crisis and we are collaborating with local authorities and the combined authority to achieve this goal.” B&NES Council announced in March that it would be looking at measures to speed up the process of bringing empty properties back into use. The authority said that currently there were 587 properties that had been empty for more than six months with 153 of them empty for two years or more. Councillor Paul Myers, cabinet member for economic and community regeneration, is being asked to approve the updated Empty Homes Policy. He said: “Increasing the supply of local housing is one of our top priorities, and bringing disused or empty properties back into use can play an important role in this.” Meanwhile, government funding to help the West of England Combined Authority speed up building new homes was also announced last month. The deal includes £3 million to help progress development sites across the region and agreement to take two a £250 million bid for new transport links along the Bristol Temple Meads to Keynsham corridor and an £80 million bid for links between the M5 and the A38 in North Somerset to the next stage of Housing Infrastructure Fund assessment.

From Page 1 Plastic Re-Action – has now been set up to keep people informed of future events. The scale of the issue is huge, Helen said, but continued: “It does help if people are saying at ground level that this is an issue and we are not happy about it. More and more of the foods we buy at the supermarket are wrapped in plastic and the level is increasing rather than decreasing, particularly with fruit and vegetables. “We want to see plastic reduced at source rather than having to recycle it and we want Tesco to take action now, not in seven years’ time.” A Tesco spokesperson said the company has made a number of commitments to tackle packaging, including making all items fully recyclable or compostable

by 2025. It also says it will ensure that all paper and board used is 100 per cent sustainable and that packaging weight is halved compared to 2007 levels by 2025. The company also says it aims to work with suppliers to simplify packaging, supports work to improve the country’s recycling systems and wants to help change customer behaviour by using marketing and promotions to encourage recycling, use of own containers, and choice of packaging purchase. Helen said it only required a small change to ensure the protesters could leave their plastic behind, with everyone bringing their own reusable bags and containers along to carry their items home. She added: “We all did it before plastic. When plastic came in we were forced into changing what we think food should look

Luke Allen, right, with his mum, dad and sister

April, 2018

Luke was and soul, The family of a 22-year-old former Broadlands School pupil who died following a fall at a construction site in Bristol last week have released an emotional tribute to a “kind, caring and loving” man. Luke Allen, a demolition worker, died from injuries he suffered in the fall in Baldwin Street on Thursday, March 15. In the statement released by his mum, dad, sister and partner Eva Lewis-Smythe, pictured with Luke, right, they said Luke loved his job with Brocks Labour Ltd, which he joined around two years ago after studying at Bath College and working part-time at Tesco in Keynsham. The statement continues: “Everywhere Luke went he seemed to make so many great friends, who all now hold fond memories of him. “Three years ago, Luke met

the love of his life, Eva LewisSmythe. She was his whole world as he is hers. Luke lived at his home in Keynsham with his mum, dad and sister. “Luke loved going to the gym, building muscle and improving himself. He would always tense his arm and say, ‘Quick feel my arm’. This always did make people chuckle. “Luke also loved his tattoos. He wanted them everywhere but so far he had an arm sleeve, a leg sleeve and he had not long started on his other arm. He also had a tiger on his hand for his mum, and along with Eva was this year going to get the number 26 for their anniversary, which is the 26th June. “Luke was such a kind, caring, loving man and everyone knew it. He was a big softie, especially with his family and Eva. He

would always put someone else’s needs before his own and do anything to help anyone. “The loss of Luke has had a massive impact on his family and friends. He touched the hearts of so many people. “Twenty-two is such a young age to be snatched away from this world, but his memory will live on forever. “He was, is and always will be the life and soul of the party, the class clown, the best friend, the ‘hulk’, the best son, boyfriend, brother, grandson and nephew and he will be missed so much.” A fundraising appeal set up in Luke’s memory in aid of the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity has already collected more than £3,300. What should I do if my dog eats chocolate?

I

f you suspect your dog may have eaten any type of chocolate, always call your vet immediately for advice. Let them know which type of chocolate it is, how much you think they may have eaten, and preferably keep any packaging that might help the vet determine what has been consumed. Chocolate contains theobromine which cannot be metabolised by dogs and is therefore highly toxic with potentially fatal side effects if not treated quickly. Knowing the type of chocolate can help to determine the seriousness of the amount eaten. Dark chocolate can be highly toxic if eaten even in small amounts. Milk chocolate has much lower levels of theobromine and is therefore less dangerous in small amounts, but this completely depends on the size of the dog. Small dogs are particularly vulnerable to toxicity from small amounts. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and is less likely to cause effects – however, it is full of sugar, which has its own negative side effects, and still should not be fed to your dog under any circumstances.

With Easter upon us and our houses filled with chocolate eggs and treats, it is important that everyone in the family is aware of the dangers and keeps their goodies well out of pets’ reach. Dogs can sniff out chocolate, rip off the packaging and devour it in no time at all. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhoea, abnormal heart rhythms, increased body temperature, tremors, seizures and respiratory failure. Chocolate poisoning at its very worst can result in death from heart attacks, seizures, coma or respiratory failure. All veterinary practices have a 24-hour emergency service so if, despite all your efforts, your dog does get hold of your chocolate and eat it, please call the emergency number straight away for advice. If you are a Keynsham Veterinary Centre client, remember our hospital in Whitchurch has a veterinary team on site 24 hours a day if you need it – call 01275 832410. On a brighter note, may we wish you and your pets a very happy Easter!

Noise row over wildlife park speakers Villagers living near a Keynsham attraction say they are suffering from increasing levels of noise from the site’s sound systems on a daily basis. Residents in Bitton say loudspeaker announcements and commentaries from Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park can not only be heard in their village, but in Swineford and Upton Cheyney too. Bitton Village Residents’ Association says villagers fear disturbance will increase if the venue adds more events to its calendar and had made formal complaints to South Gloucestershire Council. In response, Avon Valley says it has now installed a new speaker system, switching from horn speakers to column speakers to help disperse any noise. Spokesperson Lizzie Arkley said: “We are constantly monitoring sound levels and looking at the direction of the

speakers and have also been in touch with local councils to ensure we’re doing everything we’re required to do as a business.” Speakers are used to make announcements every hour between 11am and 5pm during off-peak periods and every 30 minutes between the same hours at peak periods, she said. The attraction welcomed 200,000 visitors last year. A spokesperson for the BVRA (bvra17@gmail.com) said villagers were interested to know if any noise travelled towards Keynsham or if it only travelled in the direction of Bitton. He said: “The nature of this business has transformed over the years from one that harmoniously complemented its rural, peaceful country, riverside location to one that clashes with its environment and neighbours. For instance, activities have extended from promoting such things as excellent wildlife

experiences for children to daily events during the summer that include pig racing and festivaltype events such as the FEAR Festival in October.” Ms Arkley said the park remained very much a farmbased attraction and employs 62 people locally. She said: “We do have to move with the times

but this does not mean we make more noise. We are trying to make the park as educational as we can and to encourage more schools to make educational visits with us. “We employ 62 people locally and have to keep the business running, adding on additional events to generate income.”

I met dedicated, tenacious parents who wanted the same for their children and young adults. “In subsequent years the society has grown to the very professional outfit we see today, providing social clubs and activities for many children and adults with learning disabilities.” Today, the society runs 10 different projects, offering members aged from five to 65 a wide range of opportunities to socialise,

10 different projects for members horizons. We are proud to say that a number of our adult members now have the confidence to live independently in supported housing, work in employed or voluntary positions

and enjoy meaningful relationships.” To mark the society’s 40-year milestone, a grand celebration is being held on Saturday, June 16, from 1pm to 6pm at Keynsham Rugby Club. Fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “This event is to celebrate how far we have come, what we have achieved in our 40 years and, most importantly, an opportunity for us to say thank you to all our supporters. There have been so many people over the years that have either given up their time to help our members, fundraised for us or have supported our fundraising efforts. “We anticipate 300 people will attend during the afternoon and they will be able to enjoy food and refreshments, lots of fun activities, live music and dancing. We are looking to cater for all ages and provide some great entertainment.” The celebration is also a chance to look to the future and

there are big plans afoot to find a new home where the society can bring all its clubs – which are currently based at various venues in Keynsham, Radstock and Bath – under one roof. With the area’s population only set to grow, the society’s leaders are anticipating rising demand for its services, with growing membership already meaning that some of its clubs have had to move to bigger premises. Building their own centre, with hall space, offices and storage facilities is the vision and Russ Pocock, the society’s treasurer, said: “Over the past year we have set aside some funds and held additional fundraising initiatives; we have made great steps financially towards achieving our goal – to own a premises that will facilitate our existing projects and be suitable for expansion. “Our restricted fund has now reached £85,000; however, we still have some way to go in our desire to raise £250,000

by the end of 2019. Once we have reached our target we will have enough funds behind us to either adapt an existing building, should it become available, or enable us to source the correct land or building in an area within Keynsham, central to our existing venues. To ensure we find the best solution for our existing needs, research is being conducted to find either land for development or building for renovation.” Lisa O’Brien, chair of trustees, added: “My son has been involved with the society for over 25 years. His club nights were and still are the highlight of his week when he meets and has fun with his friends. The confidence they have gained through exploring new experiences, environments and activities have helped to equip them for life’s challenges. I look forward to the next chapter in our development to meet the broadening needs of our members in the future.”

Cyril shares secret to a long life as he celebrates his 105th

A Keynsham man who has just celebrated his 105th birthday puts his longevity down to a healthy diet – and staying off the beer. Cyril Chapple marked the milestone at Charlton House with fellow residents and staff with a tea party in his honour. The celebration was also attended by Simon Knighton, chair of Sirona care & health, which runs the residential home. In the year Cyril was born – in 1913 in Midsomer Norton – Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather King George V was on the throne and Liberal Herbert Henry Asquith was Prime Minister. Thinking back to his childhood, Cyril said: “I can

remember my mother ran a shop in the front of the house; she thought rather than leave it for special occasions, we should do something with it. “I used to have to get her ice to make ice cream and she used to make toffee apples.” Having lived through the First World War as a child, Cyril joined the Army during the Second World War, travelling to France, Italy and Africa and cooking for the troops. He remembers one day when he caught sight of the German general Rommel, also known as the Desert Fox. “I saw Rommel in his car when I was on duty down a lane; he sped off when he saw me,”

Cyril Chapple cuts his cake at Charlton House in Keynsham he said. “I was surprised to see him.” When asked the secret to a long life, Cyril said he believed

it was “eating the right food and drinking the right drink”. “I don’t think beer is good for you,” he added.

to begin finding solutions. Keynsham Community Spirit began as a Facebook group, which has gathered more than 400 members in a matter of weeks. Co-ordinators from the town’s other community Facebook pages have also been invited to attend the meeting. Trisha Williams, the group’s founder, said anti-social behaviour and related criminal acts were continuing in Keynsham and many people had expressed concerns about a rise in problems as the warmer weather approaches. She said: “There is no quick fix. It’s a complex problem and the first thing is to find out exactly what the various agencies

and corporate organisations can offer us so that we can move forward together. We can then develop a holistic approach – we want to do something about this element of fear and frustration in our community.” An important part of the group’s work, says Trisha, will be to log incidents of anti-social behaviour reported by the victims on social media, which can then be given to the police and authorities as evidence of the issues residents are facing. Members of the Community Spirit Facebook group are invited to register details on the group page or email keynshamcommunityspirit@ hotmail.com. She said: “We would like to create several group

networks of people throughout the community who can monitor these reports in different areas and then feed back to the main group so we have evidence of the problems and where they are happening. Logging all incidents with the police is the only way to highlight the problems.” The group plans to hold two meetings a month – one for the steering team and one for the various agencies who have expressed an interest in supporting the project. Updates will be posted on the Facebook page. Anyone who would like to get involved in helping the group can contact them via the Facebook page or email keynshamcommunityspirit@hotmail.com

Author explores Putin’s Russia in debut

Garry Abson’s debut novel Motherland is being launched this month

A novel that explores crime and corruption inside Vladimir Putin’s Russia may seem like a timely release. But for author Garry Abson, his debut release Motherland has been a long time in the making – not only the years it has taken to write and publish the book, but the decades over which his interest in Russia has grown. Motherland follows senior detective Natalya Ivanova, an honest police officer who finds herself with no one left to trust as she investigates what at first seems like the kidnapping of a wealthy foreign national’s daughter in St Petersburg – but becomes something much bigger. Garry, a Geordie who moved to Keynsham via Bath seven years ago and now lives in the town with his wife Jenny and

their children, worked with a former Russian policeman on the technical aspects of police work and travelled to St Petersburg, staying in a Komunalka – a communal apartment – exploring the city and speaking to natives about their language and culture. A big fan of crime fiction himself, Garry said setting his story in modernday Russia was an obvious choice given his experiences growing up. He said: “I’m a product of the Cold War; I grew up on Nato army bases when I was a child, then the arms race escalated to the point where Protect and Survive leaflets were shoved through every letterbox advising people to survive the nuclear fallout by living in the cellar and barbecuing the family pets – I may have misunderstood that part.

crime fiction novel

“I was also studying Russian history at school then took it as an option at university while a coup was going on in the Soviet Union that ultimately finished Mikhail Gorbachev. So it was a natural choice to ‘write about what you know’. “Although Motherland is crime fiction I’ve used the backdrop of real events such as the endemic corruption, the political stranglehold by Vladimir Putin, and the war in Ukraine. “My real interest, though, is in how this filters down to ordinary Russians: women dealing with chauvinism, teenage boys dodging conscription, or the corrosive effect on everyday morality when those in government – the people they should look up to – are engaged in the full spectrum of serious crime, from money laundering to murder.” Garry, who has worked as a lab assistant and most recently as a freelance IT analyst, began

writing around eight years ago, taking six months at a time off work to write. Motherland was first completed in 2014, and Garry said he “naively” entered it into the Crime Writers’ Association’s Debut Dagger awards for first-time writers – only for it to be shortlisted, which he describes as “one of the most shocking experiences” of his life. He rewrote parts of the book, found an agent and the novel has now been published by Mirror Books, Trinity Mirror’s book publishing arm. Garry is now working on a second novel featuring his heroine Natalya Ivanova and preparing for the Keynsham launch of Motherland on Friday, April 27. The event will be held at The Space, above the library, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Free tickets are available from www.eventbrite.com (search for Motherland Book Launch) or people can turn up on the night.

Helen Hill and husband Terry, who are both Shared Lives carers

Special accolade for ‘selfless’ carer Helen A Keynsham woman who has opened her home to many adults in need of extra support over the past 10 years has received an award for her work. Helen Hill and husband Terry are carers with the B&NES Shared Lives scheme and the team behind the initiative nominated Helen for a Chair’s Special Award as part of the B&NES Council Chair’s Awards for support she has given a young mother with a learning disability to allow her to maintain contact with her child and build her confidence. The nomination described Helen and Terry as “totally self-

less” and added: “If we didn’t have people like Helen and Terry in the community our communities would be much poorer for it. They care and take responsibility for so many people as well as their own family and think nothing of it.” The Shared Lives team is appealing for more people to become carers to support vulnerable adults in a range of ways, from offering somewhere to live or stay to helping them access activities or new experiences. Keep calm and enjoy a ‘crisis musical’ on life in middle age

The trials and tribulations of ageing will provide plenty of humour when an award-winning theatre company returns to the stage in Saltford. SCAMP (Saltford Community Association Musical Productions) is presenting Mid-Life: The Crisis Musical at the newly refurbished Saltford Hall from May 3 to 5. With songs and sketches examining mammograms, prostate checks, herbal supplements and forgetfulness, the cast of six say the show will have universal appeal – because if you haven’t gone through it yet, you will one day! Founder members Jenny Abson, Corinne-Anne Richards and Sally Warhurst will be performing alongside Keynsham resident Tom Stentaford, who appeared in their previous production Murder Ballad,

Matthew Graham, Tom Stentaford and Matt Brock rehearsing and Saltford and Bath musical theatre veterans Matt Brock and Matthew Graham. A spokesperson said: “This cast of six are bringing to life the various characters in the production who demonstrate that growing older might be mandatory, but growing up is strictly optional.”

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

SCAMP’s last production, Murder Ballad, which was performed at Bath’s Mission Theatre, met with acclaim from both audiences and reviewers. The group was delighted to be nominated in four categories in the Somerset Fellowship of Drama David Beach awards, including a nomination for Best Musical Production. Following the recent awards ceremony they were pleased to receive the runner-up award for Best Production in a Small Venue across the whole of Somerset. Tickets for Mid-Life: The Crisis Musical are priced at £12 and are available online at buytickets.at/scamp or from the Saltford Hall booking office. High Street ‘can emerge stronger’ as second big name reveals plan to close A national chain has announced plans to pull out of Keynsham’s High Street, the second in a matter of months. The town’s New Look store has been named as one of 60 branches that could close across the country as the company looks to reduce its spend on premises and rent. It comes just three months after NatWest announced it would be closing its Keynsham branch this summer. Alistair McGeorge, executive chairman of New Look, said: “Given our challenged trading performance and over-rented UK store estate, we are having to take tough but necessary actions to reduce our fixed cost base and restore long-term profitability. “We have held constructive discussions with our key landlords and strategic partners and

will now seek creditor approval on our CVA (company voluntary arrangement) proposal. A priority for us is to keep all potentially affected colleagues informed during this difficult time.” Creditors approved the plan on March 21. The clothing chain is one of a raft of big-name retailers to report financial difficulties in recent months, with local high streets across the country feeling the impact of boardroom decisions to close stores. But while the difficult trading conditions are a national or even global issue, town council chairman Clive Fricker says he believes there is a great deal that can be done locally and is optimistic about the future of the High Street and other retail areas in Keynsham. He said: “Individual special-

ist shops run by people with a passion for what they are doing have a greater capacity to make a success. The big chains have economies of scale but not the commitment to individual shops that local traders have.” Councillor Fricker said a positive, holistic approach that looked at all the issues affecting the High Street – from parking and traffic, ambience and cultural offering, to anti-social behaviour and CCTV – was being supported by the town council, which is overseeing the launch of a business network and the creation of a Neighbourhood Development Plan that will shape the town for the next 20 years. He also said the redevelopment of the Riverside block could benefit Temple Street and the whole High Street, bringing more people into the area. He said:

“There is no one magic solution but there is much that can be done to make the High Street appeal to people who want to go to the shops for an experience. We can make Keynsham a place to come not only in the day but also in the evening for social activities.” He added: “There will be more casualties nationally and globally, but with a positive, holistic approach we can emerge from it even stronger.” To find out more about the Keynsham Business Forum, which is open to businesses of all sizes and types, contact the town council on 0117 986 8683 or email townclerk@keynsham-tc. gov.uk Send your views to news@keynshamvoice.co.uk

Dozens object to dinosaur adventure golf in green belt A plan to open an 18-hole adventure golf course, complete with model dinosaurs up to four metres tall, on green-belt land at Saltford has been branded “vulgar” and an “eyesore” by people objecting to the proposals. The bid by Adventure Experience Ltd to develop a disused part of the site at Glenavon Farm on the Bath Road has attracted around 70 objections. The proposals include the installation of three animatronic model dinosaurs that move and make roaring sounds, with documents submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning department showing they could stand up to four metres tall. Many of the objections raise concerns that the dinosaurs, which would be located close to the site’s entrance, could distract

motorists – a view echoed by the council’s own Highways department, which also said golf balls landing in the road could be another safety issue. Saltford Environment Group said members felt the models would be “completely absurd in the same landscape vista” as St Mary’s Church and Saltford Manor House and Saltford Parish Council has also objected. Noise, access from the A4 and its position in the green belt and close to residential properties are among other concerns raised by objectors. But Adventure Experience Ltd’s application says the attraction would open up the green belt to families and other users for recreational purposes, while planting and landscaping would also improve the look and biodiversity of the former agricultural site. The proposal

Tickets reduced for young music fans

also includes 87 on-site parking spaces. The application says: “The theme props allow for an interesting, viable and educational environment aimed predominantly at children and families. The attraction has the ability to appeal to a wide age range from young children through to grandparents and carers. This allows for a leisure and recreation use of the site which appeals to people that will not typically have used this green belt location at present.” Former farm buildings at the site are already being used for other purposes, with one now a retail showroom while work is also under way to create a farm shop and café. Public consultation on the scheme has now ended and B&NES planners will decide whether to grant permission in coming weeks.

Young music lovers are being given an extra incentive to come along to a classical concert in Keynsham – discounted tickets. To encourage younger people to attend the show by three musicians at The Space on April 21, organiser justCentreStage has reversed the usual concessions policy so it is the under-23s who pay a reduced rate rather than older audience members. Taking to the stage to perform a Shostakovich Sonata for Cello and Piano will be cellist Keith Tempest and pianist Barbara Murray. Spanish pianist Aitor Garcia Ruiz-Fuentes, a young research physicist, will also be performing pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Albeniz, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. Tickets, at £15 or £10 for under-23s, are available from https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/ and doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Party in memory of music-loving Ken

A woman is taking to the stage with her band to perform at a fundraising party in memory of her music-loving dad and is inviting people in and around Keynsham to come and enjoy a dance. Lynne Sheppard, an audiologist who works at Keynsham Health Centre and St Martin’s in Bath, is hosting a “Party for Parkinson’s” at Somerdale Pavilion in honour of her father Ken, who died at 76 in 2015 after living with the condition for a decade. Inspired by her father’s lifelong love for music, Lynne joined local covers band The Coyote Kings on bass and backing vocals after he passed away, and the group will be providing the entertainment with hits from the Sixties onwards at the event on Friday, April 13. Ken, who lived in Kingswood and worked as an industrial chemist, was an accomplished pianist and Lynne said it was

Lynne Sheppard as a child with her father Ken, far left; Lynne, who will be playing bass at the fundraising event, left heart-breaking to discover he could no longer play as his Parkinson’s worsened. She said: “Some of my earliest memories are of him playing the upright Bentley piano that stood in pride of place in the front room for so many years. Dad was a versatile pianist playing both classical and popular music, he especially liked playing jazz numbers and any melody

with a syncopated rhythm. He never forgot one of the first pieces he learnt, The Teddy Bears’ Picnic, which he taught me how to play.” At school, Lynne took up the drums and played percussion in many orchestras and bands – with her mum and dad always on hand to transport her and her instruments around. She said: “Dad would sometimes

say jokingly after concerts that he wished I’d taken up the flute as they would often get roped into helping pack up and move lots of big, heavy percussion instruments. I played drums in a local group during my 20s but sold them when I went travelling round Australia for a year. I always knew I’d like to play in a band again so decided to learn bass guitar five years ago.

n NEWS “Sadly my dad never got to see me play the bass but I know that he would be proud that I achieved my ambition to play in a band again.” Proceeds from the party, which will also include a bar, raffle, poetry and cake, will be split between the main Parkinson’s UK organisation for research and the local support groups in Bristol and Bath. Ken attended a group in Bristol to take part in Tai Chi sessions, which Lynne said he found very helpful and was a place to meet others coping with the same illness. Parkinson’s is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged, affecting movement, and there is currently no cure. The Party for Parkinson’s will begin at 7.30pm on April 13 in the Cadbury Suite at Somerdale Pavilion and tickets, which cost £5, are available by contacting Lynne at partyforparkinsons2018@outlook.com or from G&D Free in Keynsham High Street.

Choir double bill for mental health charity Community choir ChoirJam is teaming up with an a cappella group for a concert that aims to raise funds for a mental health charity that uses music to help a wide range of people. The Keynsham pop choir will be joined by Three Rivers for an evening of entertainment at St John’s Church in Keynsham on Saturday, April 14. Proceeds from the event will go to Make A Move, a group that uses music and movement to help a wide range of people improve their mental wellbeing. Founder Michelle Rochester said: “I was a school teacher for nearly 20 years, and ten years ago I began to develop a programme using music and creative movement for disadvantaged children with mental health difficulties. I founded Make a Move in 2011 because I felt this work could bring huge value to other groups as well. Make a Move now helps improve the mental health and

wellbeing of those with postnatal depression, dementia and learning difficulties and we also continue to work in schools.” The concert, organised by ChoirJam’s Emma Hutchinson, will begin when Three Rivers take to the stage at 7.30pm before Michelle Rochester and Katie Brown talk about Make A

Move’s work. Then ChoirJam, accompanied by the CJ Band, will perform from 8.50pm. The concert ends at 9.45pm, with a retiring collection for Make A Move, and the bar will remain open until 10.30pm. Tickets are £10 and are available from www.choirjam. co.uk

With the site owned by the police on Bath Hill East currently on the market, it seems a good time to look at what used to be there. This photo, from a calendar published in 1898, shows the old police station, which stood on what is now the front car park. This very fine building was constructed in 1858, and originally housed the magistrates’ court as well as the police station itself. Modern accommodation for the police station was built in about 1964 and the building was then empty until it was demolished in 1972 to provide additional parking space.

A comical look at Normal life with broadcaster Henry

An event coming to The Space in Keynsham will be a real family affair, with poet, comedian and broadcaster Henry Normal sharing the spotlight with his son Johnny. Henry is appearing at the venue on Saturday, May 12, to promote his new book, A Normal Family – Everyday Adventures With Our Autistic Son, while Johnny, a talented artist with a growing reputation, will be displaying some of his vibrant pieces in the Libourne Lounge above the library. Henry received a Bafta Special Award for his work on some of television’s most popular comedy shows, which includes co-writing The Mrs Merton Show, The Royle Family, Gavin and Stacey and many of Steve Coogan’s TV and live shows. For this appearance, he will

n NEWS by Ros Anstey Villagers piled into trailers and headed off into the lanes surrounding Compton Dando, Chewton Keynsham and Burnett for the communities’ annual spring clean. Around 20 volunteers armed with litter pickers and hi-vis jackets climbed on board trailers towed by tractor drivers Simon Kinnersley and Gary Pearce, who dropped them off at various points. Organiser Sarah Wilson said it was a fantastic turnout and the group collected a “significant” pile of rubbish. She said: “Alongside the inevitable fast food wrappers and cups we also found an old freezer wedged under a bridge, tyres, drain pipes, dog poo bags, nappies and several socks! “As always Bath and North East Somerset Cleansing Neighbourhood Environmental Services team were amazing. “We were loaned pickers, hivis jackets and gloves and given collection bags – all organised by Lauren in the office. A huge thank you should go to these guys for all their support. “A big thank you also goes out to not just those who turned out to help, but to the many people who pick up litter all year round when out walking – all in a bid to keep our beautiful patch of Somerset clean and clear.” After the litter-pick, the volunteers were treated to soup for lunch provided by Harriette Dottridge and served inside resident Liz Stanbury’s garage. Mrs Wilson added: “It’s amazing what can be achieved in a couple of hours on a Sunday morning by a team of willing volunteers.”

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

ADVERTORIAL

ritain is a nation of chocolate lovers – in 2016 we collectively ate a whopping 555,000 tonnes of the sweet stuff, with Brits spending £374 million at Easter alone on sweets and chocolate. Over the past decade the rows of Easter eggs in the supermarket have been wrapped in ever more elaborate packaging – particularly plastic. But there’s been a push in recent years from consumer groups to challenge whether so much plastic is really needed to keep our eggs from cracking. Just in time for this Easter, consumer group Which? has released the results of a survey looking at the most popular eggs and their packaging. Which? found that Thorntons’ Classic large egg was the worst offender, with cardboard and plastic making up over a third of the product’s weight. Cadbury’s Twirl large egg came out best, with packaging making up less than a fifth of the weight. The good news is that consumer pressure has led to more and more Easter egg packaging being recyclable, with the only

unrecyclable component being the plastic window which is still found in some products. With such a sharp focus on plastic pollution, what can we do to reduce levels of plastic packaging at Easter? For a start, we could just not buy eggs that come with a plastic window and ask relatives to do the same if they’re buying for grandchildren. The more creative among us might even have a go at making their own. Silicone egg moulds are cheap to buy and can be reused again and again. It’s a lot of fun

to do with kids, too – if you don’t mind the kitchen looking like a chocolate bomb’s gone off in it! I speak from experience… Finally, a plea for “good” chocolate. Fair Trade changes people’s lives, giving them a decent living that allows them to invest in their business, send their children to school and have access to healthcare. So please, this Easter, whether you’re buying or making, look out for the Fairtrade sign. Happy Easter from Transition Keynsham!

Members of a Keynsham slimming group are enjoying settling in at a new venue after moving to a revamped meeting space at Queens Road Methodist Church. The Slimming World group led by Sharon Snook, which previously met at the Key Centre in the High Street, now has a larger home for its weekly meetings as well as on-site parking. Sharon has run the meetings, at 7.30pm on a Monday and 9.30am on a Tuesday, for five years and says she has found it “the most rewarding job in the world”. One member has been told he is no longer classed as diabetic after taking medication for the condition for 20 years, while another member who used to use a walking stick can now walk unaided after losing three stone. A couple have lost eight stone between them since October, says Sharon. Anyone who would like more details about the Slimming World group can call Sharon on 07401 948239 or drop in at a meeting.

olunteers from Keynsham in Bloom are celebrating after Keynsham Memorial Park was presented with a five-star Pride in Parks award. This is the third consecutive year that Keynsham Memorial Park has been awarded the top rating. In order to achieve the five stars, the park had to show excellence in three core pillars: Community, Maintenance and Development and Environment. Community involvement is one of the major contributors; this was demonstrated by the range of groups that use the park, and

activities and events that take place there throughout the year. South West in Bloom judge Tony Moore was very impressed with the standards of the park, among his feedback comments were that it is very popular with all sectors of the local community and that there is a wide range of well-maintained horticultural and community facilities. He also noted the continuing year-on-year development of the popular music festival and the excellent project to catalogue the principal trees in conjunction with students from Wellsway School Green Team.

We will over the next month or so be announcing dates when we will be setting up workshops where people can come along and help to put together the cascade. It’s not just our local Keynsham

community who are contributing to the cascade. Youngsters from Marksbury C of E School, who make regular trips to Keynsham Leisure Centre for their swimming sessions, noticed our poppy appeal poster in the town council office window. They are currently all learning to

Pop-up stall a big hit

The Mother’s Day pop-up floral gift sale which we held at Keynsham Farmers’ Market proved to be an instant success. Our stall took

Farewell to Ed

Finally, finishing on a sad note, Ed Snow, who was one of our longest serving Bloom volunteers, recently passed away after a short illness. Ed was a much-loved and popular volunteer, taking part in many of our Bloom activities over the years. He had a fun character and always used to enjoy helping to judge the children’s colouring competitions. He also accompanied me when we judged our Keynsham in Bloom High Street traders shop window competition. Ed was also a regular winner of our Keynsham in Bloom allotments competition and was always very proud to show us around his award-winning plot. We wish to extend our thoughts to Ed’s wife and family on this sad occasion.

Lady golfers’ coffee morning raises £3,260 Two local dementia charities will be sharing £3,260 raised by everyone who supported a coffee morning at Saltford Golf Club last month. Ladies captain Jane Russett was helped by more than 40 members of the club’s ladies’ section to organise the event, which was attended by members, Saltford residents and friends of the club, and supported by local businesses. The proceeds will now be split between BRACE – a

Bristol-based charity funding research into dementia – and the Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance. Jane said: “It’s more than just a coffee morning, there were lots of stalls – plants, nearly new clothes, golf equipment, toys and games, books, jewellery, homemade goodies, a 200-prize tombola and a huge raffle. It just shows what can be achieved when a group of ladies with a common cause all work together. Thanks to all who took part in any way.”

n KEYNSHAM WALKING FESTIVAL

Join walking festival – at your own pace After two successful Keynsham Walking Festivals, it was decided to extend this year’s event to three days, from April 6 to 8, with an additional walk on the Friday evening. With nine walks available, there is one to suit everyone’s

taste and ability. We are teaming up with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society again, with two walks this year. The one held last year proved to be the most popular activity of the festival. The first one, on the Friday night, which is free, is the first in a

series of walks to be held by the history society throughout the summer depicting various aspects of Keynsham’s heritage. Details of these are on their website. The second, on the Saturday, will be led by the knowledgable Richard Dyson.

Avon Wildlife Trust is joining us again on the Sunday, for the last walk of the festival, when David Sage will be leading a nature walk around Manor Road Woodlands. Joining us for the first time will be Helen Richardson’s Allseasons Nordic Walking Group, which will be kicking off Saturday’s programme of walks and heading towards Hanham. For those interested she is offering a free taster walk on the following Monday. This is open to people new to Nordic walking. Another group who have supported previous festivals are the Somerdale Ramblers, who will be setting off on the first walk on the Sunday, taking us on a circular route around Chewton Keynsham, Queen Charlton and Stockwood Vale. Introduced last year and proving popular, we have two walks for beginners, or those who only want a short ramble. These will be led by Keynsham Walkers are Welcome member Derek Butler and are free. Dawn Drury, another group member, will be leading the longest walk of the festival on the Saturday, taking us around Compton Dando. Another Sunday walk and another group member, Mike Stone, will be leading a shorter walk around Stockwood Vale. There will be a charge for some walks on the programme. Adding to the fun, there is a quiz at the Conservative Club on the Saturday evening starting at 8pm with quizmaster Alan Lassman. The grand finale of the festival will be the family fun day on the Sunday afternoon at the bandstand in the Memorial Park. Beginning at 1.30pm, there will be a children’s treasure hunt around the park, with Frozen Princesses, a face painter, and a balloon modeller joining the fun, while some pirates will also be dropping in to say: “Ahoy.” All events are open to the public. Full details are on the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome website – https://e-voice.org.uk/ keynshamwalkersarewelcome/ – where bookings can be made. the engines standing there. The council’s response was to make proper provision for the practice, building the lay-by, presumably with a stronger bridge, and thoughtfully providing an aperture in the parapet for the pump-hose. This unusual feature (possibly worth a lot of points in the i-Spy books of the past!) remains to this day, although it has probably not been used since the 1950s.

At last month’s meeting Jinx Newley gave us an entertaining and comprehensive talk on the monastic institutions that could be found in Bristol from the 12th century until the dissolution of the monasteries. She spoke about the many different religious orders, their activities and their buildings, pointing out various remaining features that allow the sharp-eyed to identify long-lost structures. We were given an insight into a very different world, where religion played a huge role in the life of what was then a small city.

A lay-by with history

No doubt there are many lay-bys on our main roads that have stories to tell, but in many cases these will be somewhat unsavoury! However, one lay-by that many readers will be familiar with was built for a particular and unusual purpose. At the bottom of Durley Hill in Keynsham, opposite the Rest-aWhile Café, is the lay-by, still paved with the original setts, that gives access to the Keynsham Football Club car park and the Broadlands playing fields. It looks like a piece of the old road that has just been left behind by more recent widening work. In fact, it was built by Keynsham Rural District Council in 1922 after the parish council approached them “regarding the slush and muck caused by engines stopping at the brook to take in water and stoke up the fires”. The engines referred to were steam road locomotives, or traction engines, which at this time were quite common, having taken over from horses as the main means of hauling heavy loads by road.

Above, a road locomotive of the type that would once have drawn water at the lay-by at the bottom of Durley Hill, pictured below. This locomotive was built in 1919 and is restored to “showroom” condition.

They had to stop at intervals to replenish their water tanks and the Horsepool Bridge at this point provided a handy spot for drivers to

pump water from the Stockwood Vale watercourse. Locals were also concerned that the bridge was being damaged by the weight of

April Meeting: Lundy Island

The final talk of our 2017/2018 programme gives an opportunity to discover the history and charm of Lundy Island without the discomforts of the boat crossing! André Coutanche’s presentation is entitled A Little Kingdom – The Harman Family’s Lundy and he describes stories and personalities from the time when this unique island was under its last private owners, illustrating it with period photographs and pictures. The talk will be on Monday, April 16, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome. Uncovering secrets of thriving urban oasis

eynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group’s March talk and walk were synchronised to highlight a magical and little known wildlife haven in central Bath, writes chairman Dave Sage. Smallcombe Cemetery, just 15 minutes’ walk from the bus station, has been the subject of some active and effective conservation work, supported by a highly detailed survey of its flora and fauna, led by Marion and Alan Rayner from the Bath Natural History Society. On March 9, more than 45 members were treated by Marion to an entertaining explanation of the conservation project and the findings of the various surveys that have been completed. There is astonishing diversity in a relatively small area, thanks to the lack of disturbance, the range of habitats and microhabitats found and the variety of soil types in the cemetery, which has been closed since 1988. This diversity amounts to more than 700 species of plants, animals and fungi, including 33 tree species, 144 species of herbaceous plants, and 80 species of mosses and liverworts. Conservation work, made possible by National Lottery funding, should increase this diversity even further. It has included rebuilding collapsed walls, reinstating fallen

Watching some of the avian winter visitors from a hide at Chew Valley Lake monuments, clearing undergrowth, and grassland management, including raking off all hay at the end of the summer to reduce the nutrient content of the soil, enabling more grassland species to flourish. This has been very much a community effort. Then, on the following Sunday, members were able to see this work first hand. Field studies organiser and supplier of the photographs Liz Wintle takes up the story.... “On a perfect spring morning, Marion and Alan Rayner guided us around the delights of the secret nature garden that is Smallcombe Cemetery. They were so informative

that it was exciting each time a new lichen, moss or flower was found or new bird was heard! Lichens (seen in close-up with Alan’s hand lenses) varied from crustose to foliose and fruticose, and we learnt that new studies seem to show that they are not only composed of a fungus and an algae, but also a yeast. “We also saw or heard 16 different birds, including goldcrest, bullfinch, nuthatch and buzzard, saw a muntjac deer and found a set of three toads! Marion pointed out the shell of the round-mouthed snail, the only British land snail with a watertight trap door. “There were a dozen different plants in flower (excluding bulbs

planted by visitors), among them were daisy, dandelion, hairy bittercress, hazel, barren strawberry and celandine. Both English and Irish yew trees gave off clouds of pollen when the branches were lightly tapped! “We came away with a renewed love of nature in the very small as well as the very special, shown through the great diversity of habitats found in this secret cemetery.” l On a bitterly cold but beautifully clear and sunny day, 24 members of Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group enjoyed a feast of wildfowlwatching on Chew Valley Lake. Led by Andy Davies of Bristol Water and local expert Roger Palmer, we huddled together in some of the bird hides around the lake, glad of the body heat generated! We spotted quite a few winter visitors, including a scaup from Iceland, and a goldeneye, shoveler and pintail from northern Europe. PEN TO PAPER

ADVERTORIAL

with Keynsham Creative Writers

All Things Crabby If Malcolm was asked to recall his childhood memories he would have to admit that such memories were few and far between, rather vague and sparsely remembered. He could always tell you, however, why he had a love for crab cakes which seemed to have started from the age of eleven. Mum and Dad only just managed to scrape a living. Mum worked in the local care home and Dad was a hospital porter. Malcolm never went short however and, as an only child, was rather spoilt. As with many families in the Sixties, holidays were spent at Weston-super-Mare. Rather unusual for a young boy, Malcolm required a taste for all things aquatic! At school, our stomachs would turn over as he recalled how he would tip whelks, cockles

and mussels down his neck. But crab, now that was his particular thing and he would always buy a pot of melted butter to pour over it. Back home, crab was too expensive and considered a luxury, so crab cakes would have to suffice. “I remember my Aunt Joan’s (mum’s sister) garden party during the summer of ’68,” he related to us one Sunday afternoon while fishing down Chew Valley Lakes. “I was twelve I think and it was the annual get together? It was a lovely sunny day and the garden was a tapestry of colour,” he said. “Trestle tables bedecked with paper tablecloths that swayed in the breeze. And there, amongst bowls and plates of various delights, was Auntie’s home-made crab cakes, with mayo”, he recalled excitedly. “And wonderful home-made bread (no machines in those days).”

We were beginning to wish that we had brought some penny chews to quench our hunger, what with all this talk of food. Malcolm continued: “The garden party was always the highlight of my summer. I think it was seen as obligatory, a family get together after the bleak winters that were common back in the Sixties.” The warmth of summer had its obvious attractions for all of us. At home, Sunday meant what used to be referred to as “high tea” and was the only day of the week that Malcolm was allowed to eat in the front room with a tray on his lap while watching Dixon of Dock Green. We never did catch any fish that day but couldn’t help wondering if Malcolm was going home to his beloved fish cakes once again? John Howlett

n NEWS Stop the scammers with a call blocker

Funny HA HA by Sylvia Payne

Taraxacum Seed Head by Malcolm Shore

Vulnerable residents in Keynsham and Saltford are being offered help to block phone calls from scammers. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Trading Standards team says over an 18-month period 5,649 nuisance calls were made to 10 local people – but just 11 got through thanks to the fact they had had call-blockers installed. The council, in partnership with the National Trading Standards Scams Team, is now offering the call-blockers to vulnerable residents across the area. Councillor Bob Goodman, Cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “Nationally, an average of 18 nuisance calls are made to people each month. However, scammers target vulnerable people; one resident received 109 such calls over just four weeks. “Providing call blockers to vulnerable people is one way we can help prevent them becoming victims of fraudsters.” Brian Gane, from Twerton, who had a call blocker fitted two years ago, said: “I was inundated with nuisance calls, it was so annoying. Since I’ve had the call blocker I haven’t had one. The system is absolutely incredible!” Scams can include: l fake lottery win letters l online scams, for example the purchase of tickets for an event such as a concert where it transpires that the tickets do not exist l telephone calls asking for people’s bank account details l doorstep scams, for example, where rogue tradesmen turn up out of the blue offering to carry out work you don’t need or want. Action to take: l Speak to family or friends l Sign up to mail and telephone preference service l If you think you’ve responded to a scam, end all further communication immediately l Call your bank and cancel any recurring payments l Speak with Citizens Advice consumer helpline 03454 04 05 06 (local Trading Standards will be referred a copy of the complaint) l Report the scam to Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 Find out about B&NES Council’s Trading Standards at www. bathnes.gov.uk/services/tradingstandards

Find out how buying local can do a world of good at market

M

ake a note in your diary for the next farmers’ market at Keynsham on Saturday,

April 14. The media, thankfully, in recent months has been more forcefully highlighting the need to tread lightly on our planet, not to saturate the oceans with discarded plastics, voicing concerns about super-size dairy farms where animals may not see a field or a blade of grass, or of overprocessed foods which are adding to the country’s growing obesity problems, especially in our young children. Meanwhile, Somerset Farmers’ Markets have for nearly two decades already been spreading this message: the need to buy locally produced food with low packaging and high nutritional value and a concern for high animal welfare standards. We have also provided our customers with

over 3,000 jute shopping bags over the years and our producers aim to use paper bags or recyclable packaging. Many of our farmers are involved in Open Farm Sunday encouraging customers to visit and see for themselves their high welfare standards, food production methods and build trusting customer-producer relations. It is also good news that our region is still blessed with small farms and food producers who have environmental sustainability and high animal welfare standards at the core of their ethos. Our

bakers use flour from local mills, free-range eggs from local flocks and cheeses from the array of local dairies. The penny seems to have finally dropped and more and more people want to shop ethically to become part of the solution rather than the problem! We make this as easy as possible in Keynsham on the second Saturday of each month all year round. Come and enjoy supporting the local environment, local economy and in our corner of the South West preserve our small family farms, dairies and artisan producers. The market has a monthly newsletter to introduce you to all the producers who will be attending – to subscribe visit our website www. somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk and follow us on Facebook for lots of news from the producers.

n NEWS Santa Dash team appeals for helpers The organisers behind a festive fundraising event are appealing for local people to get involved as volunteers to prepare for its return in December. The team behind Saltford Santa Dash are hoping people will come forward to join the organising committee to ensure the event continues. The popular run has raised more than £55,000 for local charities over the past five years and sees hundreds of people take to the streets of Saltford dressed as Santa. A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Although the Christmas run-up seems a long way away the initial work and planning takes place over several months beforehand to be ready for the first Sunday in December.” Anyone who would like to get involved can email saltfordsantadash@gmail.com or find more information online at www.saltfordsantadash.webs. com

THE BIG PICTURE

Film review with Harrison Thorne

A weird, enchanting twist on classic fairy tale The Shape of Water (15) uillermo Del Toro’s Best Picture-winning The Shape of Water is a film that I would describe in one word: unique. The story of a mute janitor engaging in a romance with a fish-human hybrid is a premise that would likely turn the average moviegoer away but for those of us who stayed, we were treated to a gorgeous, moving and oddly charming film. Sally Hawkins stars as Elisa, a mute cleaner who feels that her disability has left her life with a lack of fulfilment. When she meets the amphibious creature,

Hawkins expertly portrays how this hole in her life is slowly filled by the relationship she forms with him without the need for words. They say that a film is only as good as its villain and Michael Shannon steals every scene he’s in as the psychopathic military official in charge of the creature. Shannon’s varying tone and physical stature make him an intimidating and dangerous character no matter what he’s doing. The visuals and score are also deserving of high praise with the film winning both Best Production Design and Best Original Score at the Oscars. The unique locations

and set design only enhance the strangeness of the film and in turn make it a more memorable experience. The name The Shape of Water is incredibly fitting when it comes to the score with each track centring on an underwater motif presenting a “floaty” feel that flows incredibly well. In conclusion The Shape of Water is a moving fantasy romance filled with memorable visuals and sound, fantastic performances and a touching story that is unpredictably both engaging and lovely, all packaged together by the visionary director Guillermo Del Toro.  5/5

Seed swap gets a new season started

Hundreds of gardeners from across the area descended on Timsbury to swap seeds and get ready for a new growing season. The annual Seedy Saturday event saw 300 people step through the doors of the village’s Conygre Hall to buy seeds and plants and hear talks from gardening experts. Members of the Cam Valley Arts Trail organised crafts for younger visitors while The Connies tea room sponsored the cafe. Organiser Sam Ross thanked everyone who got involved and said: “Next year will be our tenth anniversary and we are planning our biggest event yet. It will be a real community event involving people from as many of the surrounding villages as possible, including local craft and gardenbased businesses.” Save your seeds for the next Seedy Saturday, which will take place on March 9, 2019. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library

Adult Fiction

The Devil in the Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson This was recommended to me by a friend when I was looking for some new historical fiction. Set in London in 1727, the author introduces us to Tom Hawkins, a real loveable rogue. He is the rebel son of a country parson, who pursues a life of wine, women and gambling. However, after one fateful night Tom ends up in the notorious debtors’ prison of Marshalsea. The prison is a dark and very dangerous place where life is cheap and everyone is on their guard. There is a strict hierarchy which can change your position in the prison if you cannot find the funds to pay and send you over to the diabolical Common Side. But when a popular inmate is brutally murdered, the prison is also gripped with fear and suspicion. There are rumours of a ghost haunting the yard and what does the cruel governor Mr Acton have to hide? Worst of all, Tom is now sharing a cell with the prime suspect. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The character of Tom is well written and believable. The author has evoked 18th-century London very well – very atmospheric with all the sights and smells of a big city. There are two more books in the series – well worth looking out for. The Man Who Loved Dogs by Leonardo Padura Leonardo Padura realises a great historical novel about the

events that led to Trotsky’s assassination. The novel starts with quite a blurred line, the reader doesn’t get exactly what’s going on. I think it serves the author’s purpose well, givng us a sense of the confusion and propaganda of Communist-era Russia. We get to see the actions and thoughts of both sides, the secret services on one side and Trotsky’s family on the other. Padura must have done such a great job in his research to give us a truthful double portrait. We have a glance at a whole period, its architecture, its society, and the paranoia of Stalin’s leadership. I was totally unfamiliar with this piece of history and after having read the book I couldn’t stop trying to find old archive pictures of all the protagonists we meet in the pages, and finding about what happened to them after the USSR collapsed. Padura couldn’t have given me a better history lesson! Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant

A Hat Full Of Sky by Terry Pratchett A Hat Full Of Sky is Terry Pratchett’s second Tiffany Aching book in the series, The Wee Free Men being the first. The first book sees Tiffany discovering her witchy abilities, which she must use to rescue her younger brother. The second book is an exciting continuation. With her new-found friends the Nac Mac Feegles, who are ever watchful, she embarks on a journey to learn witchcraft but a powerful enemy stalks her. Can she defeat it? This Discworld novel made me laugh far more than the others. Pratchett has a great sense of humour, not to mention his wild imagination. So if you’re looking for a hilarious, out-of-this-world book, A Hat Full Of Sky is the one for you. Reviewed by Erin Conlon, age 11

Tender Earth by Sita Brahmachari Sita Brahmachari has written many books and her first novel for young adults, Artichoke Hearts, was the winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Tender Earth is all about one girl trying to cope with changes and save a friendship while trying to find her voice. Perhaps, with her late Nana Josie’s “protest book” to strengthen her resolve, she will make it. I thought this book was a truly moving novel about friendship and standing up for what is right. Its slow, lethargic pace is tranquil like a soothing lullaby. Reviewed by Erin Conlon, age 11

Hospice receives share of concert funds by Ros Anstey Fundraisers who helped organise a concert in Keynsham have handed a share of the proceeds to Children’s Hospice South West. Members of the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge teamed up with Keynsham Rotary Club to host a performance by the Mendip Male Voice Choir at St John’s Church on December 2. The concert also featured Cantilena Choir and The Silver Ring Choir of Bath and proceeds were split between causes supported by the Rotary clubs.

Chelwood Bridge club president Vic Clarke said: “We are delighted to donate our share of the proceeds to CHSW, which provides a magnificent service in three children’s hospices in the South West, including one in Wraxall, North Somerset. “I had the pleasure of being a member of Mendip Male Voice Choir, which sang at the concert. Among the songs in our repertoire is a beautiful song called Shining, which was composed specifically for and donated to the CHSW.”

How big?

I

came across a fascinating video this week. It records how a number of friends constructed a scale model of the solar system in the Nevada desert. They had seen pictures of the planets in books or on video, but there was no concept of the true distances between the planets in any of these images. The friends wanted to demonstrate just how far away our nearest neighbours in space actually are. Their starting point was inspired by a quote from James Irwin, an astronaut on the Apollo 15 mission to the moon in 1971. Irwin said: “As we got farther and farther away, the Earth diminished in size. Finally it shrank to the size of a marble, the most beautiful marble you can imagine.”

So in their model, the Earth was the size of a marble. Using that scale, the sun would be 176 metres away from Earth, Venus 56 metres, Mars 93 metres. The distance from the sun to Neptune at the outer edges of the system was 5.6km or 3.5 miles. From the comments left under the video, many had found the concept of the vastness of the universe to be awe-inspiring. One thought-provoking comment made on the video was: “We are on a marble, floating in the middle of nothing.” It’s easy to feel insignificant when confronted with such vastness. James Irwin was the eighth astronaut to walk on the moon, and from the lunar surface he saw the Earth as a mere marble. He put his own perspective on his voyage of discovery when he wrote: “Jesus walking on the Earth was far more important than mankind walking on the moon.” See what you think – there are many interesting things in the video. It’s not a religious video. If you have access to YouTube, search for: To scale: The Solar System by Wylie Overstreet. I hope you enjoy it.

Bowlers roll up sleeves for a spring clean With only days to go until the opening of the new bowling season everything is looking in fine fettle at Keynsham Bowling Club, writes our correspondent. during close season on the green surrounds and the clubhouse. Due to the many internal competitions held each year the honours boards in the clubhouse were practically full and have been replaced with modern boards that can be updated each year by computer. The removal of the old boards has allowed the

inside walls of the clubhouse to be freshened up with a coat of paint. A cleaning morning has been held and our picture shows two of our ladies, Maureen Cavill and Jan Iles, ensuring that everything in the kitchen is spotless for a new season of catering. The subscription morning was extremely busy as members

queued up to sign on for the season ahead. The club was delighted to have won the Gold award in the Community Groups category in the Keynsham in Bloom competition in 2017, which helps to maintain the image of the Memorial Park as the jewel in the crown in Keynsham. We now all look forward to what we hope will be a dry, warm summer.

KEYNSHAM TOWN LADIES FC Last month was frustrating to say the least with just one fixture completed out of four due to the double snowfalls of recent weeks and water-logged opponent’s pitches, writes our correspondent. Nevertheless, the one match played was a victory against local rivals Larkhall Athletic and during the period the club made a very significant signing in the form of former Yeovil Town captain and Super League player Ellie Curson. Manager Barrie Newton said: “Ellie became available because her full-time teaching career clashed with her club’s full-time status. The player responded positively to our inquiries, because Ellie was clearly intent upon continuing with her football career on a part-time basis. “So we have been able to sign

a quality player, with great versatility, being able to play right across all midfield positions and even at full back; a player with Welsh caps at U16, U17, U19 and senior level, who is still only 24 years of age with her best years still to come.” Curson made her debut for Keynsham in the 2-0 win over Larkhall, a match that saw regular midfielder Mich Munro leave the field with a broken bone in her foot, which will keep her out until mid-April. Keynsham’s goals came from Sandy Abi Elias, her first for the club, and Justine Lorton. Keynsham now have a series of four home games in succession, starting on March 25 with a visit from Maidenhead United. On April 8, Plymouth Argyle are the visitors. Keynsham Rugby a slim seven points from relegation zone after one win out of four Despite there being two months of Keynsham Rugby activity to report there have only been four matches played due to inclement weather throughout the region, writes our correspondent. Sadly, the local team has only racked up one win in those games, garnering a poor six league points from a possible 20. They now lie 10th in the Tribute South West 1 League, just seven points clear of the third relegation spot, albeit with a game in hand, but with a difficult run-in against the leading lights in the league. In early February they travelled to Bideford and a rather turgid game unfolded with both teams unable to hold onto passes or create much excitement. Tom Lewis scored Keynsham’s only try, converted by Sam Challenger, while the home side scored two converted tries and two penalties. A week later Bridgwater and Albion arrived at the Crown Field and a fast-going, attractive game followed, with defences having the upper hand. Keynsham’s inability to satisfy the referee’s requirements led to penalties, which was to cost them dear. Leading by a try by Oakley Goodland, they were 10-5 down when an intercept by John Pearce deep in his own half saw him go 70 metres for a try converted by Challenger. A further try by Dan Moody, added

Keynsham in action in a previous game against Thornbury this season to by Challenger, saw the score at 19-13 at half time. The second half saw Keynsham squander several opportunities and the visitors took full advantage, slotting a penalty and running in a

converted try. A losing bonus was just about what it was worth. Hey ho, a week later – and a win! Teignmouth came a-calling and the local boys notched up a 32-25 win. At the end, this was a helter-skelter affair with the visitors having defeat plucked from the jaws of victory in the last minutes – the story of Teignmouth’s season. The scoring went 7-0 (try by Timmis, conversion by Challenger), 7-5, 10-5 (penalty Challenger), 10-10; halftime. Then it was 10-15, 10-22, 17-22 (try John Pearce, conversion Joe Davis), 17-25, 25-25 (try by Matt Clifford Challenger’s conversion hits upright), 32-25 (try from Ryan Harding converted by Challenger), then the whistle – the end of the game. The last two tries came in five minutes with both scored in almost identical fashion; a prolonged series of phases

from deep within their own half, without the opposition touching the ball. A bit of a steal this one, but all counts in love and war and five league points were bagged. Cullompton were the next visitors to Keynsham and edged what was an even first half on the score line 14-19, Keynsham’s points coming from two tries by second rower Matt Clifton, converted by Challenger. The first half was elongated significantly following an injury to the Keynsham scrum half, John Pearce; the injury required a visit from an ambulance and the game continued, eventually, on an adjacent pitch. Keynsham’s only reward in the second half was a Challenger penalty, with Cully running in a converted try and kicking two penalties for a disappointing 1732 defeat. Fortunately, “Pearcy” was able to rejoin the team before the bar closed.
