Mum’s ‘dream is a reality’ as she gets MS treatment A Keynsham mum-of-two is recovering from weeks of gruelling medical treatment after friends and family raised thousands of pounds to send her to a clinic in Mexico in a bid to stop her debilitating multiple sclerosis in its tracks. Rebecca Matthews travelled

to the city of Puebla in February to undergo haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), which she hopes will enable her to “reclaim her life” after suffering two years of relapses that have left her exhausted. With two boys – six-yearold Frank and Albie, four – she

Police renew appeal after pair stabbed Police are continuing to appeal for information after two men were stabbed in an incident in Keynsham. Officers were called to reports of a serious assault in Warwick Road just after 8.30pm on Saturday, March 9, where they found the pair had suffered minor injuries from stab wounds. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, including two men, aged 32 and 25, who attended a police station on March 11 and a 30-year-old man who was arrested later the same day. All three have been released under investigation while inquiries continue and anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could help is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 5219051653.

Meanwhile police across the Avon and Somerset force area have taken part in a week of action aimed at reducing the number of knives on the streets and educating young people about the dangers of carrying a knife. The force joined the Metropolitan Police-led Operation Sceptre, which saw officers patrolling hotspot areas, carrying out sweeps for hidden or discarded weapons, talking to retailers who sell knives and visiting pubs and clubs to highlight the risks. Mum’s ‘dream a reality’ after having treatment for her MS From Page 1 devastated to be turned down for HSCT with the NHS because she didn’t meet its strict criteria for the treatment. But friends and family swung into action to raise £48,000 as soon as they could to send her to Mexico to have the treatment, which is more effective the earlier a patient has it. Rebecca’s father Alan and his wife Lynn organised a celebrity fancy dress party in September, which raised more than £4,000, while supporters tackled the Keynsham 10K in October and the Saltford Santa Dash in December to add to the fund. Friends and family spent a Saturday packing bags at Waitrose in Keynsham in the run-up to Christmas, while donations also came from First Bus Canteen Committee, a nonuniform day held at Chandag Infant and Junior schools, fundraising evenings hosted by the Wagon and Horses pub in Peasedown St John and via an online fundraising appeal set up by friends. By the start of this year, their efforts had raised an impressive £17,000, when a close family member stepped in to donate the rest, allowing Rebecca to set a date for the treatment. She travelled to Mexico on February 2 with friend Kate Davison, who acted as her carer during the four-week programme. Rebecca underwent intensive chemotherapy to

remove harmful immune cells before stem cells were removed from her chest. On day 17, the harvested stem cells were then returned to her body – a day the clinic staff and patients celebrate as a “stem cell birthday” as it is essentially the “birth” of a patient’s new immune system, Kate explained. Rebecca then had to be kept in a sterile environment as her immune system “rebooted” itself before a final injection of the drug rituximab. She is now back home in Keynsham with the boys and husband Rich, with recovery

expected to take up to a year. Kate said: “This isn’t where the story ends. In the first three to six months extra precautions need to be taken to avoid being exposed to anything that may make Rebecca ill, even a simple cold could be devastating for her. “To repeat a recent post Rebecca put on the Facebook HSCT Plea page, she is overwhelmed with how everyone has rallied around her this past year or so. She is incredibly grateful, and always will be, that everyone involved was able to make her dream a reality and counts her blessing daily. “Rebecca also promises to make the most of this next year to reach her personal goals now that she has been given the opportunity to.” Rebecca is keeping supporters updated on her progress at www. facebook.com/Rebeccas-HSCTPlea-447344389102036

Top skateboarders to show off skills Professional skateboarders will be demonstrating their skills at a free event in Keynsham Memorial Park this month. Keynsham Town Council is hosting the event on Saturday, April 20, from 10am to 4pm, and will be joined by skateboard event specialists King Ramps, whose team will be sharing tips and tricks and running competitions. The event is expected to feature professional skateboarder Daryl Dominguez and Team GB BMX rider Jack Clark. During the skate event, young people will also be invited to fill out a survey on parks, open spaces and facilities for their age groups in Keynsham. Annual meeting Keynsham residents are invited to join the town’s annual meeting on Thursday, April 25. The event, hosted by Keynsham Town Council at The Space from 7.30pm, will feature speakers Duncan Massey, from Avon Search and Rescue, and Mike May, chairman of the Keynsham Music Festival Association, as well as the presentation of the Keynsham Good Citizen Award. The council’s annual report will also be presented to residents at the meeting featuring updates on many of the council’s functions, including the youth service, the annual grants and the neighbourhood development plan.

Including bypass is Investigation into ‘fanciful and flawed’

Saltford Parish Council has demanded that references to building a bypass around the village are dropped from the West of England Combined Authority’s (WECA) ambitious plans for transport in the region. The authority was responding to WECA’s Joint Local Transport Plan (JLTP), which sets out up to £10 billion-worth of proposals to change the way people travel around the West of England by 2036, including a number that will affect roads and public transport in and around Keynsham and Saltford. In the document, it says that before a decision on a bypass is made, work will be carried out to look at options for creating priority for buses on the A4 as they approach the village. But the parish council said that any plan for the A4 that involved a bypass or orbital road was “fanciful and fundamentally flawed” and any references to a new road should be withdrawn. It said studies carried out on a potential bypass had shown the scheme would be costly and would cross difficult terrain and affect the landscape, adding that no “feasible” route had been identified in 50 years. In its response to the JLTP the council welcomed the

inclusion of a reopened Saltford station in a map of potential transport improvements but raised concerns at a potential increase in traffic through the village as the result of other proposed schemes. In Keynsham, the town council has said the completion of the south-east section of the ring road is essential before any more housing development is considered for the town. Its response calls for better local community transport to serve the town, including smaller buses, and supports the proposal for a Metrobus route along the A4, but points out that nonelectrification of the Bristol to London railway line would be “detrimental” to any expansion planned for Keynsham, affecting employment and economic growth. Both councils oppose road charges to help fund the transport plans, with Saltford Parish Council saying it “would consider this as an additional local tax and a charge which would significantly impact and disadvantage those people, including the elderly, on a low or fixed income”. Keynsham Town Council said it would also not support raising business rates or council tax.

A Bristol city councillor says she will be insisting that any trees cut down on land behind the former Wyevale Garden Centre are replaced when the site is developed. Jos Clark, who represents the Brislington West ward, says the reported loss of mature trees during work at the site in February was a “tragedy” and that mitigation – by replacing any trees removed – “was the best that could be hoped for”. However, Bristol-based UKS Group – which has acquired the site through one of its companies – said it was unaware of any tree felling and that contractors had only been authorised to clear debris and thin hedges on the land. Bristol City Council and the Forestry Commission have confirmed an investigation is under way. After reports that trees had been cut down at the site over the weekend of February 16 and 17, Bristol City Council served an emergency tree preservation order (TPO) on the land. A city council spokesperson said: “An emergency TPO was served on February 18 to prevent further works and, following a further site investigation which identified vegetation clearance close to the site, an emergency TPO was placed on the farm field between Wyevale Garden Centre and the park-and-ride facility at Brislington on February 22. “The felling was brought to the attention of the council via reports from local people, with two hectares of trees and

scrub affected. The Forestry Commission was informed of the felling and both they and Bristol City Council are carrying out further investigations and monitoring of the site.’’ A Forestry Commission spokesperson said: “We are aware of reports of illegal felling in the Brislington area of Bristol, and have opened an investigation into the allegations.” While the commission cannot comment on ongoing cases, the spokesperson confirmed that in incidents where it is found there was no felling licence or other permission in place, parties involved can be prosecuted and a restocking notice can be served after which the landowner or tenant must maintain the replacement trees for 10 years. Councillor Clark said: “When this site comes up for planning I will be insisting that all the

Car drivers escape clean air zone fees

Councillors have given the green light to a clean air zone to cut pollution in central Bath – but car drivers will be exempt from paying to drive into it. The plan was agreed by Bath and North East Somerset Council last month after public consultation led to a rethink of previous proposals that would have seen a charge applied to all higheremission vehicles. The new scheme will see higher-emission buses, coaches and HGVs charged £100 and LGVs or vans, private hire vehicles and taxis charged £9. Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “This is a really important day for the city. Over the years there has been a lot of talk about air quality and I am delighted that at last we have made some big decisions on this extremely important issue.” The aim is to introduce the zone in December 2020. Keynsham campaigner Fiona named a ‘Green Heart Hero’ A Keynsham campaigner has been recognised for her work to tackle plastic pollution and reduce food waste at an awards ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster. Fiona Edwards was shortlisted in the Individual Inspiration category in The Climate Coalition’s Green Heart Hero Awards and travelled to London on March 11 for the event, which was hosted by TV and radio presenter Clive Anderson. Her nomination came after she helped launch the Keynsham Plastic Re-Action protest in March last year, in which shoppers visiting the town’s Tesco supermarket removed all of the packaging at the checkout and left it at the store. A video of the event was viewed around the world, inspiring people across the UK and in many other

Councillors declare a climate emergency Bath and North East Somerset Council has joined the growing list of local authorities around the country declaring a climate emergency. Backing a cross-party motion put forward at the March 14 meeting, councillors set a target of 2030 for B&NES to become carbon-neutral and agreed to sign up to the UK100 Pledge, where local authorities aim to switch to 100 per cent green

energy by 2050. B&NES aims to do this 20 years earlier with a target of 2030. The council also voted to oppose the expansion of Bristol Airport as part of the motion. Councillor Rob Appleyard, who proposed the climate emergency motion, said he was delighted it had been approved and that there had been “overwhelming” cross-party support. Residents get chance to buy Riverside flats before public Keynsham residents are being given the chance to buy apartments in the Riverside View development before they go on sale to buyers from outside the town. The first 20 properties in the former council office block in Temple Street will be available to residents from Monday, April 15 – one week before they are released to the general public. Work got under way in July to convert the upper floors of the building into 95 studio, one-bed and two-bed flats – with 50 people registering their interest in the properties with Gregory’s Estate Agents in the week after the banners went up around the site’s facade. The project is being run by Aequus Construction Limited, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s construction and development company, with profits

Former fire station on the market again Keynsham’s former fire station is on the market again – and could potentially be turned into new homes, according to the agent managing the sale. Colston and Colston chartered surveyors has listed the site, which is currently being used by Kier as a site office as the company works on the neighbouring Riverside View development. The agent says it is a redevelopment opportunity that would suit “a range of residential and commercial uses” and the current owners had received a “positive pre-application response for multi-storey residential development”. The price has not been made public. The site was sold to Chewton Place Developments in 2017 for £750,000, which previous agent Alder King said was 130 per cent above the guide price. Before the sale, Alder King said it had been “inundated” with inquiries about the fire station site and invited potential buyers to submit sealed bids.

Community at 67 thanks its priceless volunteers for giving over 6,200 hours The loyal band of volunteers helping to run Keynsham’s Community at 67 have saved the centre more than £130,000 in a year just by offering their time free of charge. The team calculated they had given an incredible 6,221 hours to the community hub and it activities over the past 12 months, which would have cost the charity £138,758 to deliver through paid staff. The centre, in Queens Road, hosted a celebration event on March 20 to thank its volunteers for their work, with food from Mandy’s Kitchen, before they posed for photos with a giant cheque showing how much they have saved the centre. Community at 67 offers a range of activities all delivered by volunteers, which include an IT club supporting people to get online, a popular weekly lunch

required to ensure we operate an effective and efficient charity. We have been working alongside the council’s road safety team to educate people on the correct fitting of car seats and boosters. n I supported the response team this month with a successful Misuse of Drugs Act warrant where an amount of drugs and other evidential items were seized. The suspect for this incident has been

New waste depot planned for Keynsham in shake-up Work has begun on plans to build a new recycling and waste centre at Pixash Lane in Keynsham. Council chiefs at B&NES have approved a request for £1.9 million to cover feasibility studies into relocating both Ashmead Road and Bath’s Midland Road depots to the site, as well as carrying out consultation and drawing up detailed designs. The move is designed to meet increased demand on waste services and to free up land at Midland Road for housing. A report on the current recycling centres says Midland Road is “no longer fit for purpose” with a number of health and safety risks, while Ashmead Road is “spatially constrained” and in “poor operating condition” for the increased demand.

Proposals also include building a new public household recycling centre at Odd Down in Bath. The report says the district has seen “substantial” housing growth, with 6,000 new homes built in the past decade, and now needs “modern, purpose-built” facilities to handle the increased waste and recycling generated by households. Figures released by the council in December showed the amount of kerbside recycling collected was up almost one fifth over the previous 12 months, increasing by 3,500 tonnes. The amount of food waste collected doubled to 6,748 tonnes in the same period while waste sent to landfill fell by 8,198 tonnes. Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “Residents are really embracing

Lifetime achievement honour for Mary The founder of Keynsham and District Talking Newspaper has been honoured for her dedication to the service for the last 35 years. Mary Burnard was presented with the Peter Duppa Miller Lifetime Achievement Award at Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Community Awards. Mary was nominated for the honour by deputy town clerk Dawn Drury after she received last year’s Keynsham Good Citizen Award for her work with KTN, which provides weekly local news recordings for blind and partially sighted people. KLOG to celebrate 50 years

The group performs two shows a year – a musical in spring and a production devised by members themselves every autumn – and have been recognised over the years with several awards from the National Operatic and Dramatic

Association (NODA) and in the South West Rose Bowl Awards. After Spamalot, KLOG’s second show this year will be called 50 – The Anniversary Gala and will see many former members returning to the stage to reprise their roles from shows produced over the years. There will also be many fundraising events throughout 2019, including a Golden Quiz, a fun day and a grand raffle

Community groups are being urged to get their applications in for a share of Keynsham Town Council funding from April 2. Every year, the council awards grants ranging from £100 to £1,000 to support charities and voluntary or public sector organisations working for the benefit of Keynsham residents. Grants awarded last year included money for the Friends of Manor Road Community Woodland to buy wildflowers, bird boxes and bat boxes and funding for sporting activities at Keynsham Hockey Club among many others. This year the council will be allocating around £20,000 and applications can be made from April 2 until May 3. KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

Pleasure trips up the Avon from Bristol were a feature of local life for many years; many went to Beese’s Tea Gardens but some continued to Keynsham. The last boat to offer these was the MV Kingstonian, which continued until some time in the 1960s. There was then a gap until the Bristol Packet started in 1973. Speakers inspire us to take weeds and wildlife to heart educating and informing the wider community of good practice. Both the BLUE Campaign and supporting wildlife through gardening complement each other and could easily run side by side. The RHS Bloom theme for 2019 is “Wise Ways with Water”, which focuses on the precious resource of water and the challenge that gardeners face when there is too much (e.g. rainwater or flooding) or too little (e.g. drought). The RHS is asking us all to think about gardening with water in mind in 2019, but the challenge of managing water obviously extends well beyond 2019. Keynsham in Bloom will, along with other Bloom groups, be embracing this theme and encouraging everyone to garden with Water in Mind. eynsham in Bloom volunteers attending the recent South West In Bloom Spring Seminar in Chippenham were treated to three inspiring talks. Fergus Beeley, from the BLUE Campaign, local herb grower Jekka McVicar and Kay Clarke, Royal Horticultural Society community development manager, spoke about supporting wildlife through gardening. Fergus Beeley, an awardwinning local wildlife film-maker and conservationist, gave a wonderful presentation and film show outlining his BLUE Campaign and his work in film, showing us clips of work he undertook as part of the Blue Planet series. In 2015, concerned about the state of our biodiversity in Britain, Fergus founded the BLUE Campaign, which encourages the rewilding of at least some of our gardens, road verges, parks and school grounds. Rewilding increases the diversity of native plants (commonly known as weeds) nearly all of which are the vital food plants for specific caterpillars and other insect larvae. Such action transforms the ecology. Yes, nature is untidy, but we must live with it. The campaign’s “blue heart” symbol, made out of recycled materials, is staked into ground that has been set aside for rewilding to raise awareness. The campaign was successfully piloted in Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire, with the support of Sodbury in Bloom volunteers. Since then, the campaign has spread to every corner of the British Isles and the blue heart has now become nationally recognised as the symbol for rewilding. We all came away inspired by the BLUE Campaign and would like to encourage everyone, especially schools and community groups, to take part by just leaving a

As well as providing a food source for a variety of caterpillar species, it will also increase the number of moths and butterflies that will emerge, providing a vital source of food for birds. The BLUE Campaign will also feature in our community art installation, which will include large butterfly and blue heart netting shapes covered with our knitted flowers and pollinators. There is also an opportunity for you to purchase your own blue heart made from recycled materials to place in any rewilding area of your garden, details of which will be available in next month’s issue of Keynshamvoice. It would be great if people could start to monitor and record flora and fauna activity, which we can then plot to see how successful the campaign has been. Kay shared some examples of best practice. l Creating habitats in areas with no or minimal natural wildlife, such as log piles, bug hotels, bird and bat boxes. l Planting for pollinators, with early and late flowering plants rich in pollen and nectar. l Responsible pest management and encouragement of natural pest control or use of biological or cultural controls over pesticide controls. l Best practice with regards to seasonal activity e.g. late mowing, hedge trimming and tree management outside of bird nesting season. l Community involvement in management and protection of natural habitats l Learning opportunities including engaging with schools, citizen science projects such as monitoring of wildlife and habitats, and

She gave us an insight into how, back in 1984, she became involved in growing herbs – from her back garden in Filton, to where she is now on her herb farm in Alveston growing over 400 varieties of herbs. Jekka is also vice president of the RHS and ambassador for RHS Health and Wellbeing. She is also the recipient of the RHS’s top accolade, the Victoria Medal of Honour, as well as winning a number of gold medals at RHS flower Shows. New events join old favourites

Saltford Parish Council is looking forward to welcoming residents to the Annual Parish Meeting on Tuesday, April 2, at 6.30pm. A report will be given on the actions of the council over the last year while the meeting is also an opportunity for electors to have their say on anything they consider important to the people of Saltford. The winners of the SPC Community Awards will be announced as part of the meeting to recognise their outstanding contribution to the village. Saltford Fairtrade Group refreshments will be served after the meeting. The council’s April meeting will take place afterwards, from around 7.15pm. The public are welcome to attend and speak during Public Time at the start of the meeting. Both meetings will be held in the Avon Room at Saltford Hall. Many events at the biennial Saltford Festival have become firm fixtures in the village’s calendar – but organisers have ensured there is plenty of room for new activities this year too. Returning from Saturday, June 8, and running over nine days, the festival will feature around 80 events – from music, dance and comedy to food, drink and competitions. Among the events making their debut this summer are a sing-along community cinema screening of The Greatest Showman, a food festival, a Taste of France evening, a Caribbean dance evening with a live band, a treasure hunt and a clothes evening. Making a welcome return will be a range of guided walks, lunchtime talks, open gardens, a jazz night with Hannah Wedlock and The Blue Notes, a murdermystery evening, photo and short story competitions and, of course, the popular scarecrow

Santa Dash organisers hand over the funds A record number of runners helped raise £15,200 in December’s Salford Santa Dash and the proceeds have now been split between two good causes. The event’s committee members recently presented the funds to Helen Mackie from the Jessie May Trust and Neal and Kirstie Harris from Young Minds. One of the organisers said: “As the Dash continues to grow,

so does the need for sponsors and extra volunteers, before, during and after the Dash. There is a role for everyone from collecting mince pies to being in charge of the 60+ marshals and everything else in between. Breakfast club cuts waste and hunger

Author David Williams launches his three-volume book Fry’s of Bristol at the Chocolate Quarter, which spans the years 1728 to 1935 in the history of the famous company. David was joined by former Fry’s employees who prepared an exhibition of Fry’s memorabilia to coincide with the launch. Students at a Keynsham secondary are tackling food waste and ensuring others don’t go hungry – just by tucking in at their school’s breakfast club. Caterer Zest, which provides meals at Wellsway School and SBL Academy in Oldland Common, has joined FareShare South West, a charity that redistributes surplus food from businesses such as supermarkets to charities and community groups. FareShare delivers 75kg of food to Zest each week – from pigs in blankets to marmalade depending on the stock donated to the charity by businesses. Pupils then receive a discounted breakfast, paying £1 for up to three items. The partnership aims to

cut food bills for the schools, both part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, while any profits from the scheme go back to FareShare. The trust’s primary schools will also benefit as Zest plans to provide food parcels for families in need from the supplies and organise events raising awareness of food poverty, holiday hunger and waste while raising funds. The first, a two-course Surplus Supper costing just £1 per person, was due to take place at Chandag Infant School on March 27. Schools team up for Science Week

Secondary school students in Keynsham opened up their labs to budding scientists from a local infant school to celebrate British Science Week. Teenagers from IKB Academy helped six- and seven-year-olds from Chandag Infant School carry out experiments during a practical lesson on “colours in nature”. Some of the visitors even dressed up as scientists for the occasion. Debbie Gibbs, principal of IKB, said: “We want to inspire children with the excitement of science from a young age so that they will go on to study these subjects and develop the skills and knowledge that will be needed for the jobs of the future. “Both the infant pupils and our students benefit from collaborating in these visits, which show the advantage of

being part of our multi academy trust.” Annie Smart, head of Chandag Infants, said: “Our children love science and these visits help take the learning to another level.” As part of British Science Week, IKB students also heard a lecture from an NHS team who visited the school, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) subjects.

Pupils inspired to create mini masterpieces Youngsters from Chandag Infant School brushed up on their art skills to create their own mini Impressionist masterpieces. The children joined pupils from a number of local schools at Paulton Infant School to learn about the work of Claude Monet, exploring his use of colour and how he painted the same scene

at different times of day or in different seasons. The children then worked together to create mixed media images inspired by Monet’s famous Water Lilies before working on their own pictures of their gardens, a green area at their school or another of their favourite places.

Adventure at every turn in the Mendips! Take a cold, windy weekend and let loose nearly 50 Keynsham Scouts on the Mendip Hills – it was a recipe for fun and adventure. Caving, climbing, mountain biking, archery, mapping, hiking, and kayaking were just some of the activities on offer. Based at the Charterhouse Activity Centre it was a weekend not to be missed, badges were earned, leaders achieved qualifications to run activities and the theme of adventure did

not stop for the whole weekend. Organiser Paul Bodman said: “The young people were amazing, prepared to try new things and push themselves.” When one young Scout was asked how the weekend went, they replied: “Fab, but I am exhausted.” Another, when asked what was the best bit, replied: “Getting lost on the hike on Friday night and finding our way again!” Great memories and a great time had by all. Special thanks to all of the leaders who made it possible.

Guides’ awards are cause to celebrate for their proud unit A memorable celebration has been held by 2nd Saltford Guides in honour of the achievements of their two eldest girls, Martha Hamlen and Charlotte Walsh. Both girls have been working hard towards achieving their Baden Powell Award for almost 18 months, completing 10 challenges each, learning new skills, new hobbies, inspiring others and exploring their beliefs and passions further than before. A spokesperson for the group said: “We are all very proud of all they have done and achieved, they have set a very high bar in our unit with their achievements.” Martha and Charlotte were presented with their Baden Powell Challenge Award, a celebratory cake, and a frame each made by the girls in our unit, sharing their memories of them both. The girls will be staying within the Girlguiding organisation and are training to become Young Leaders with 2nd Saltford Rainbows on Thursdays. Elsewhere in Saltford Girlguiding, the Ranger unit continues to thrive, welcoming members aged 14 to 18 to meet on Thursdays. They plan their own programme week by week, earning badges as they go. 1st and 2nd Saltford Brownies

Martha and Charlotte celebrate their Baden Powell Challenge Awards are joining forces on a sleepover event being hosted by Flip Out trampoline park in Longwell Green, where there will be exclusive bouncing, pizza, a movie and a comfy night’s sleep on the trampolines. 2nd Saltford Rainbows are continuing to earn amazing numbers of interest badges; most recently girls have been awarded their Family Tree and Helper badges. The group are going on a visit to Bath City Farm to begin their Nature badge, and also look forward to a piratethemed canal adventure in the May half-term. LETTERS ‘Shed’ not linked to ACE initiative With regard to your article in issue 84, headed ‘Neighbours lend a helping hand to tackle loneliness,’ I am writing to highlight some references that might be misleading for readers. The article refers to the Somerdale Shed and includes a picture of the same and indicates that it is part of the Chocolate Quarter. Given that the article is about the St Monica Trust ACE Neighbours programme it could also be construed that The Shed is part of that initiative too. The reality is, the Somerdale Shed project was initiated by Aquaterra, the charity that manages the Somerdale Pavilion, as part of its Step Out, Move On community programme that tackles loneliness and isolation in the area, and has done since 2016. It is therefore not connected with ACE Neighbours although it is always positive to read about community programmes. The gentleman featured in the article, Roger Clark, was indeed one of the hard-working group that put a lot of work into the Somerdale Shed development for Aquaterra and has made it the success it is today. Shop has responded to High Street losses As we welcome yet another charity shop to Keynsham High Street (Age UK in the former New Look

premises) could we take a moment to celebrate a long-established and thriving family-run business on the other side of the street? I’m talking about Buss’s. This is a high-class greengrocer with a wide range of quality produce immaculately displayed inviting you in, but it’s much more than that. Over the years it has responded to what Keynsham has lost and tried to fill the gaps by reorganising its premises. When the pet and garden shop closed (now Clic Sargent ) it took on their range and is expanding as far as space allows. When our beloved Bath Bakery in Temple Street closed, it arranged for a small daily delivery from their supplier Maisey’s of Radstock so that we can still buy proper bread. Try their teacakes – but leave one for me! If you’re looking for an unusual spice or herb that you need for a trendy recipe I would be surprised if you were unable to find it here. All this is a delivered by a knowledgeable and helpful staff, so let’s shout about what we still have rather than moan about what we haven’t and continue to give them our custom in these difficult trading times. A Saltford jewellery designer has presented Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall with a brooch to celebrate her 25-year link with a charity. Louise Primrose was invited by the Royal Osteoporosis Society to create a piece of jewellery for their president to mark the milestone and she travelled to London to personally give the piece to the Duchess. The event on Wednesday, February 13, was also held to celebrate the charity’s change of name from the National Osteoporosis Society to “Royal” after the new title was approved by the Queen. Louise created the brooch using white gold and small pearls and it stylistically represents brittle bones, which are caused by osteoporosis. The Duchess, who became patron of the charity in 1997 and

Keynsham Walking Festival returns for its fourth outing For the fourth year running Keynsham is hosting a celebration of walking, with events and activities on offer for people of all ages and abilities. Keynsham Walkers are Welcome have organised a threeday walking festival over the weekend of April 26 to April 28, featuring everything from a stroll around the town centre to two nine-mile hikes. Seven guided walks will be taking place during the festival, with opportunities to explore local history with Keynsham and Saltford History Society and to enjoy the countryside beyond the town. As well as stretching their legs, the festival programme will also offer people the chance to give their brains a workout with a quiz night on Saturday, April 27, at St Dunstan’s Church Hall

from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £4 to include a glass of wine and Cheddar ploughman’s and there will be a raffle. On the Sunday, the morning’s three walks will all end back at the Memorial Park where the festival will culminate in a picnic from 1.30pm and children’s activities from 2pm at the Bandstand. Youngsters are invited to join adventure play, balloon modelling and face painting, which will coincide with the Marshfield Brass Band concert on the Bandstand at 3pm. esidential burglary, knife crime and the illegal supply of drugs have a devastating impact on our communities. I know local people continue to be very concerned about these crimes, as am I – especially with the ongoing national conversation about knife crime – and you want to be assured that the police are doing everything they can to tackle these

This investment means we can recruit an additional 100 new officers and launch a focused operation that will tackle burglary, knife crime and the supply of drugs

issues. With the council tax bill coming through our letterboxes recently, you will have noticed an increase for policing. By increasing policing by £2 a month for the average band D household, the constabulary will be intensifying their fight against serious violence and continue to make our communities safe. This investment means we can recruit an additional 100 new officers and launch a focused operation that will tackle burglary, knife crime and the supply of drugs as part of an initiative called Operation Remedy. I want

local people to see and feel the difference in our constabulary’s fight against crime, and we will be sending a loud and clear message to criminals that coming into our area to commit crime and exploit the vulnerable is not an option. Work to tackle knife crime and serious violence was intensified in mid-March as officers took part in Operation Sceptre, a week of action that aims to reduce the number of knives on our streets. The initiative incorporates several tactics, including education of both young people and retailers, targeted patrols of hotspot areas, weapon sweeps and knife surrender bins. We need to remember that knives do not keep you safe; by carrying a knife you are putting yourself in much greater danger and are more likely to become involved in a violent situation. We must work alongside other agencies in health, local government, the charitable sector and our communities to understand the reasons why young people are arming themselves. We need to make it clear it is never acceptable to carry a knife or a weapon. If you are worried that

April, 2019 someone you know is carrying a knife but are nervous to talk to the police, you can contact Fearless (the Crimestoppers youth arm) anonymously and potentially help to save a life. Finally, we also supported child exploitation (CE) awareness day. Children and young people can be victims of sexual or criminal exploitation in return for money, drugs, the newest trainers or simply just affection. These children who are being exploited don’t think of themselves as victims; we need to be their voice, speak out on their behalf and raise awareness of the warning signs. Our frontline officers are working with hospitality businesses and taxis so employees can spot and speak out about this form of abuse. The police, educators, healthcare professionals, charities and youth workers need to continue to work in partnership and be the ones who ask, ask again and keep asking so we can stop the exploitation of our children. If you suspect a child is being exploited, please let the police, local authorities or a charity know and help us end the cycle of abuse.

Auction adds over £6,000 to charity’s new home appeal An auction has brought a Keynsham charity thousands of pounds closer to buying its own premises. Keynsham and District Mencap Society hosted its third annual fundraising dinner and auction at Saltford Golf Club on March 9, welcoming members, staff, volunteers, trustees and supporters to join the fun and bid for anything that caught their eye. The auction was led by Chris Bennett and Tim Mawdett from blues band The Uncles and lots included a two-day yacht experience, meeting Bath Rugby players at their training ground and meals at a range of restaurants. Organisations that supported the auction included Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon Homes, Stockwood Golf Club, B Block, Bath Heritage Museums, Somer Dining, Watlings of Lacock, The

A suitable building has been found and negotiations are under way, with the charity hoping to be in its new home by 2020. Russell Pocock, treasurer, said: “We have made great steps financially to achieving our goal: to own a premises that will facilitate our existing projects and be suitable for expansion. We met our target for this year and our restricted fund has now reached £100,000, which puts us in a great position to make our dream a reality.” Keynsham Mencap supporter Jason Preston is organising a 36-mile cycle ride on Sunday, May 19, to raise more funds for the charity – anyone who is interested in joining him can email amanda@keynshammencap.org.uk

Harvest supper will help African farmers Local Rotarians are helping communities in Africa develop their farming skills with their latest donation to a good cause. The Rotary Club of Keynsham has presented the proceeds of its annual harvest supper, held in October, to Send A Cow. On March 13, charity ambassador Alan Dolman met Rotary members to collect a cheque for £1,500 from president Roger Spooner and to tell them more about the charity’s work. Send A Cow was founded by West Country farmers in 1988 and provides support to people in Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya to give them practical training and support to help them feed their families and sell surplus crops. Cows are no longer sent from the UK but sourced locally to provide milk as well as manure. A Rotary Club spokesman said: “We wish them continued success in their valuable work and thank local public supporters for contributing to this.”

A former Keynsham Town footballer who turns 90 this year will be matchday VIP as the club takes on Portishead at home on March 30. Mervyn Hawkins, who worked at Frys, joined the club from De Veys in 1953, having also played for Bedminster Down. He was known as a deadly centre forward and had played for Worcester City Colts and had trials for Bath City. While football was his favourite sport, he also excelled at billiards and table tennis. Mervyn, who also served with the Royal Artillery and still lives in Keynsham, will be matchday VIP in honour of his years at KTFC and his upcoming 90th birthday and will be accompanied by members of his family.

Welcome stop near old Dramway route

ollowing our feature in the January issue on the lost pubs of Keynsham, this month we travel just a little further afield to Willsbridge. You are probably familiar with the junction of the road from Keynsham with the A431 Bitton Road, these days regulated by one of the ubiquitous miniroundabouts. However, only those of a certain age will remember the establishment that stood on the junction before road improvements in 1962: The Railway Inn. The building had an interesting history. From Roman times until at least the 18th century the road via Hanham and Bitton was the principal route from Bristol to Bath and it was turnpiked in 1707. Originally, a tollhouse stood on the site at the junction of the two roads and it may be that the shape of the bay window is a relic of that. The tollhouse closed in 1867 and was converted into a shop; it may have been rebuilt and enlarged at that time, or a few years later. It was very close to the point where the Dramway, carrying coal from the mines in the Coalpit Heath area by horse-drawn wagons, emerged from the Willsbridge tunnel (the entrance is still visible) and crossed the main road on its way to the river at Avon Wharf and Londonderry Wharf. The Dramway was built in 1833 but had a somewhat chequered history. It was closed in the same year as the tollhouse but was given a new lease of life when the nearby California Colliery reopened in 1876. At one stage a set of unloading sidings was built, known as Willsbridge Wharf, where coal

was transferred to ordinary road carts to be sold to nearby houses and businesses. If these existed in the later period, the labourers and carters would have provided custom for the Railway Inn. The business prospered when widowed grocer Rachel Bence married another local butchergrocer, Francis Neads, and they turned it into a thriving concern. In 1890 they obtained an offlicence. So although it was given the name Railway Inn, presumably due to its proximity to the Dramway rather than the Midland Railway at Bitton Station, it was actually a beer retailer, allowing those working nearby to buy beer, but they had to drink it outside. We have seen no evidence that

the Railway Inn ever operated as a public house in the accepted sense. The Dramway finally closed in January 1904, along with the pit, but the shop business survived for almost another 60 years. In the earlier part of the 20th century, the Railway Inn has been described as an Aladdin’s Cave of a shop, with groceries, pots, pans, nails, batteries and all kinds of hardware packed inside. The last owners were the Bateman family: in the late 1950s or early 1960s Jack Bateman opened a small grocery shop, with a ladies’ hairdressing salon on the top floor. 1962 saw the shop closed and the building demolished, as the road line was moved much further back to make way for the junction we see today.

Slimmers turn their old clothes into cash Keynsham slimmers’ old clothes will be turned into £5,000 cash for charity after two local Slimming World groups collected 200 bags of donated items. The groups have been taking part in the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw in aid of Cancer Research UK, bagging up the clothes that have become too big and taking them to the charity’s shops. Each bag is worth around £25 to the charity. The partnership between Slimming World and the charity also aims to highlight the links between obesity and cancer. Sharon, who runs the Monday and Tuesday groups, is delighted to have raised so much money for charity. She said: “I knew our members were amazing but I didn’t expect such an incredible level of effort – wow! “Seeing members donate their too-big clothes is just the cherry on top for us as consultants.”

ollowing three days of heavy rain and gale-force winds, the sun came out for our Sunday morning stroll to the Humpty Dumps. It was good to see 28 walkers turn up for this short, 2.5-mile walk. Leaving the park, we took the footpath behind Keynsham Rugby ground and Broadlands sports field to Durley Lane. Here we turned right and followed the river until we were opposite the Chequers pub. We then followed the public footpath up very steep steps to the Humpty Dumps. The Humpty Dumps are used for scrambling motorbikes, and this was a concern as we may have had to alter our route. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Corpus by Rory Clements This was recommended to me by my husband and I am very glad that he did. Rory Clements is well known for his books set in the 16th century but this title and the subsequent two are set in the 1930s. The story starts in Berlin where a young Englishwoman evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. On her return to England she is found dead. Furthermore, in an exclusive London club, a conspiracy is launched that threatens the very heart of government. Next, a wellconnected couple with fascist leanings are also found murdered, so it falls to Thomas Wilde, a Cambridge professor, to follow the clues which take him, and his neighbour Lydia, into a murky world of espionage and links to the abdication crisis. The story is very pacey, with brilliant characters – I particularly like the hero, Thomas Wilde, who appears to be a dusty academic but is not all that he seems. There are excellent historical details from the Spanish Civil War, Nazi Germany and Britain from the time of Edward VIII’s abdication. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next two in the series.

Alone On The Wall by Alex Honnold and David Roberts At the end of December 2018 a documentary called Free Solo was

released into cinemas. For those who watched it, your palms might have become a bit sweaty. It follows Alex Honnold’s climb of El Capitan, a granite face of rock that peaks at 7,500ft (2,308m). He doesn’t use any rope, which means any mistake will lead to death. Alone On The Wall documents in Honnold’s own words this achievement in his discipline. I am not a climber myself, but I know some around me, and I noticed it is a sport that is becoming more and more popular, particularly around Bristol. I was first lost in his words and the techniques he mentions, then David Roberts explains in more detail every challenge that Alex took on and it makes it easier to understand. The book is quite pleasant to read, the climbs and places he visits are fascinating. You get to know more about the man and his discipline and I couldn’t leave the book – I wanted to know what was next. You might not agree on his choice, as 99 per cent of climbers won’t, but we have to admit it brings a kind of curiosity and respect for someone who just follows his passion with purity and simplicity, alone against the elements. I came across Simon Hooper’s family life because of his huge success on Instagram. He is the dad, with 800,000 followers, who takes selfies while looking after his daughters. Every photo is taken with humour, showing the chaos children bring and the difficulties of being a parent. The book brings words to his daily life, and it is really touching how he is involved in his role as a dad. You don’t have to agree with its parenting techniques, but it will make you laugh and if you have children you might understand all too well his struggle. It is very honest and he chooses to make jokes of situations because even if sometimes you dream of locking your children in a cupboard to enjoy some “me time”, you still love those little demons. Church supporters publish new guide Residents and visitors alike are being invited to see St John’s Church in a new light with an updated guide book on the historic building. The publication was produced by the Friends of St John’s, Keynsham in 2018 after Edmund Prideaux edited a number of articles he had written on the church into a handy guide. This has now been updated with extra sections on the bell tower and a map to enable visitors to follow a self-guided tour. A spokesperson for the Friends group said: “It is an excellent little booklet that will make you see the church in a new light. There are all sorts of interesting details that you might not have noticed without the help of this excellent guide.”

We might think that nothing we can do will ever please God or match up to his high standards, but the Christian message is not about trying to impress God or proving ourselves worthy of His acceptance. He just loves us as we are and because He loves us, like a good Father, He just wants the best for us. No matter what we do, we can approach him as we are – His arms are always open wide to accept and to forgive, an understanding that lies at the heart of the Easter message.

Local fundraisers are once again collecting unwanted tools to give them a new lease of life in communities in Africa. The Rotary Club of Keynsham Chew Valley will be holding a collection in Waitrose car park on Saturday, May 4, from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Donated tools will be given to the charity Tools for Self Reliance, which refurbishes them before sending them to organisations in Africa that train local people to use them. The charity needs hand tools that can be used by woodworkers, metalworkers, mechanics, electricians and builders as well as sewing machines. Wombles tackle litter hotspots and plan for Big Spring Clean

Volunteers descended en masse to the riverbanks and verges around the Lock Keeper pub and station overflow car park last month to give the area a good spring clean. On March 9, members of Keynsham Wombles once again tackled the area, a regular spot for their Big Womble litter blitzes, collecting a large haul of rubbish-filled bags for the council to take away. The group will be aiming to make a big difference all over Keynsham this month when they join Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean on Saturday, April 6, from 2pm to 4pm. Guitar students take centre stage at show Almost 30 budding guitarists took to the stage at Somerdale Pavilion as part of an annual concert organised by Guitar Tuition Bristol. The show, on March 2, gave students of all ages the chance to show off the skills they’d learned during the year and included songs such as Albatross by Fleetwood Mac and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Footballers net £750 from wellbeing fund Keynsham Walking Football Club is hoping to open up the sport to even more people after receiving a grant of £750. The club was awarded the cash from the Bath and North East Somerset Community Wellness Fund, which supports projects that aim to boost wellbeing and mental health and tackle loneliness. The walking football club welcomes players who are over 50 to enjoy the game at a slower pace on the pitches at Keynsham Town Football Club’s AJN Stadium. Secretary Martin Coles said: “At present we have up to 70 players aged over 55 coming along each week. This funding will help us pay for more goal posts and this will give us more pitch space so we’ll be able to welcome more players. We are hoping to expand numbers to enable us to run an over-70s team.” A grant of £2,000 has also gone to the Keynsham-based Make a Move to support its Moving for the Mind project. The charity uses music, movement and mindfulness to help people improve their mental health. The grant programme in B&NES is overseen by Virgin Care and is managed by the Quartet Community Foundation. It has awarded more than £16,000 to 12 local projects. Kirsty Mathews, managing director of B&NES Community Health and Care Services for Virgin Care, said: “We’re delighted to be able to fund local projects that we know will help improve mental and physical wellbeing and make a difference from the wide range of activities that these grants support.”

An amazing tale of resurrection as all hope seemed lost with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

he March talk hosted by the Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham branch was the incredible tale of the resurrection of the Madagascar pochard, given by Peter Cranswick, writes chairman Dave Sage. Peter is the head of species recovery for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. His tale is based on the island of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa, renowned for its unique wildlife. However, this is seriously threatened by the increasing human population, deforestation, pollution and over-exploitation of natural resources, particularly overfishing of the island’s lakes. One victim of this is the Madagascar pochard, common in the 1940s but believed extinct

by the 1980s. One individual was found in 1991 but when it died it was thought to be the last of its kind. However, in 2006 a population of 20 ducks was found on remote volcanic lakes. The ducks were breeding and producing large broods of ducklings, most of which died within two to three weeks (probably due to lack of invertebrate food in the lake). A decision was taken to remove as many eggs as possible and handrear the ducklings. Twenty-three were hatched and reared at the Durrell Foundation, but there was nowhere suitable to release them. Eighteen months of searching by colleague Andy Bamfield led them to Lake Sofia. However, residents had to be convinced of the benefits of improving the lake and its surroundings. Sustainable agriculture was organised, increasing rice yields, reducing the use of pesticides, diversifying with other crops, developing nurseries, educating fishermen about sustainable fishing, and giving locals “ownership” of the lake. Eventually large floating aviaries were created (modified from Scottish salmon-farming containers) and several ducks were allowed to acclimatise before being released onto the lake. Although it is early days, the signs of a sustained recovery are encouraging. Peter described this unique project with a passion and is

Surprise around every corner on farm tour The group held its first field trip of the year on Sunday, March 3, having postponed it from February due to high winds, writes committee member Liz Wintle. Twelve of us went to Elm Farm, Burnett, where our vicechair Philippa Paget guided us around her family farm. This is a mixed-use working farm, rich in wildlife, and we were keen to see the overwintering farmland birds. We began our walk with a trio of corvids – magpie, crow and jackdaw, all trying to show off to us. We found a pair of frogs in the first pond, but no frogspawn. Apparently, the night before 115 toads were escorted across the road on their way to their chosen breeding site! All of the fields are now grassland with wildflowers, and two sown with clover, kale, goldof-pleasure (similar to flax) and quinoa to supply birds with seed. In the “hungry gap” between January and April, mixed bird seed is scattered daily. We were treated to sightings of great tit, chaffinch, linnet and yellowhammer, with a kestrel overhead looking very keenly at them. We saw signs of badger and Muntjac deer, then came across a buzzard carcass. It was interesting to see its wingspan hoping that the project can be a model for sustainable development around the world. Our final indoor meeting takes place on Friday, April 12, (7pm for a 7.30pm start) at the Baptist Church hall in Keynsham High Street. The speaker is Chris Sperring MBE, a charismatic exponent of

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham Could we face restrictions on air travel and tax on meat?

No easy answer to our climate emergency

n March this year, B&NES Council declared a climate emergency, following in the footsteps of local councils around England. The cross-party motion means that the council has committed to making B&NES carbon-neutral by 2030. It’s an ambitious target, but it’s looking increasingly necessary. That so many councils are declaring a climate emergency speaks to the lack of leadership from central government. Just three weeks after the International Panel on Climate Change reported that we’re likely to see warming of 1.5°C within 11 years, the Chancellor presented a budget that didn’t even mention climate change. A planet warmed by 1.5°C will mean devastating consequences, from the loss of most coral reefs to increased extreme weather such as heatwaves and floods. But scarily, even if we cut our carbon emissions to zero by 2030, we’re still on track to see 1.5°C warming. And if we don’t curb them? Then 2°C or even higher is on the table, and that’s truly terrifying. Can local climate emergency motions provide the radical action we need to prevent runaway climate change? It’s difficult to say,

especially when other issues like the local economy and jobs come into play. Nearly half of B&NES councillors voted against the first meaningful action on climate change that was asked of them – to oppose the expansion of Bristol Airport. Expanding the airport will cause higher carbon emissions and make it extremely hard to meet our target. But extra flights bring increased tourism and jobs, boosting the local economy. As we become more aware of the dangers of climate change, we’ll face more of these difficult trade-offs. There’s no easy answer to tackling global warming, but unpalatable decisions from our politicians are, I think, inevitable, such as a carbon tax on meat and restricting air travel. Older generations of voters won’t like this threat to their freedom of choice, but as the schoolchildren striking to raise awareness of the urgency of climate change have shown us, it’s their future we’re playing fast and loose with, and they’re not going to sit back and let us get away with it. The B&NES declaration gives them one more tool to hold us all to account.

Gareth Barnett chose to support The Brain Tumour Charity during his year in the role, hosting social and sporting events to help raise funds. Gareth said a number of family and friends had been

affected by brain tumours, a form of cancer he felt did not get the publicity or funding that some of the more recognised cancers got. Work to do to avoid rugby league drop Three league games and one cup match to report on this month, although there will be two further games in March to report on in the May edition, writes our correspondent. There was a mid-week match played under floodlights at the Crown Field in the Bath Combination Cup where visitors Trowbridge, occupying a similar league position in the corresponding league to Keynsham in South West 1 East, were expected to give the local side a close match. This proved to be the case although the home side went into an early eight-point lead due to a penalty by Sam Challenger and a try from Jack Evans. Thereafter Trowbridge dominated the half and saw a penalty kick rebound from the upright. They were thwarted by a very vigorous defence but did get onto the scoreboard at the last gasp of the first session for a score of 8-3. Keynsham resumed control

Keynsham Rugby have five more games to finish the season in the second half and their pack drove the visitors back on many occasions. Eventually the reward came from a Matt Withey try, converted by Challenger. Back came Trowbridge but time and again they were unable to breach K’s defence and went further behind to a Challenger penalty. Still again, they came and hammered at the Keynsham door; this time a searing break by John Pearce gained fully 60

metres and when the visitors tried to run from defence, Cieran Chester intercepted for the third try, converted by Joe Davis. Thus, it finished at 25-3, a flattering score-line but a hardwon victory. The local side failed to get revenge for an away defeat at the hands of Hornets earlier in the season when Hornets came to town. The Black and Ambers went into the lead with a try by Joe Clements, converted by Challenger, but then shipped a very good converted try in return. They then temporarily lost a man to a yellow card and shipped a second converted try. A visitors’ yellow card evened numbers up but they gave away a penalty. A massive penalty kick, putting the ball deep into Keynsham territory, was not cleared and a third Hornets try was forthcoming. Keynsham came back but another error near the line spoilt things and the half ended at 7-19. Two sloppy errors from the kick-off gave the visitors the platform they needed for their bonus point try to move it to 7-24. Keynsham came back via a try from Rich Court and a penalty try to make it 19-24 with all to play for. Generous to a fault, the Ks again made a hash of the restart and then there was a 10-point gap again. The sting in the tail then came when the scrums became uncontested, losing Keynsham’s dominance in that department. Hornets took two more tries, one of which was converted. A disappointing result to a frustrating game, 19-41. After a close game at Devonport, the Services came to the Crown Field for the return fixture. Unfortunately, the referee pulled a fetlock

and could not continue; there being no other qualified referee in attendance the game was abandoned with the score at 27-22. The match will have to be replayed at a future date – very inconvenient for the visitors to have to make another trip to us. At half time the score was 24-10 thanks to a penalty by Davies, a try from Ben Angell converted by Davies, a try and conversion by that man Davies again and a try by Dan Harvey, also converted by Davies. Services had two unconverted tries. The visitors came out of the blocks quickly in the second session with a converted try. Davies then replied with a penalty to move it to 10 points lead again. Keynsham’s tackling, much vaunted this season – and rightly so – fell away badly in this section and Devonport scored another unconverted try. They were, therefore, a bonus point to the good when the game stopped, but Keynsham were threatening a bonus point try at that point. So, both sides will have to try again. Finally, there was the game against Coney Hill RFC. In inclement conditions, it was not conducive to flowing rugby but Keynsham did avoid the potential banana skin this match might have thrown up. Any such worries were soon swept away as they stormed ahead and had secured their bonus try before half time, which came with a score of 35-0. The second half continued to be a one-sided affair from the score point of view and the home team added to their tally to finish at 52-0. Some of the scorers to cross over the line were Haydn Johnson (three), Ollie Coneybeare (two), Dan Harvey and Joe Davies. There is still a bit of work required to ensure safety from the drop with five more games to finish the season; four of these are at home so the points required for league safety should be obtainable, but it is by no means a given. The only scheduled April game for the First XV at the Crown Field is against Newent on April 13, which is also the date for the explayers’ reunion – all ex-players are welcome, just let the club know you are attending (for catering purposes).

The Ks line up a nail-biting end in battle for promotion KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field Although Keynsham Town’s incredible run of 17 successive victories was brought to an end early in March, they are still fighting it out with Cheddar to win the Toolstation Western League Division One title. The month began with a disappointing 2-1 reverse away to Welton Rovers, which was the Ks’ first defeat in over four months. A late headed goal from sub Matt Curnock was all the Ks had to show for their efforts on a dreary afternoon. The following Wednesday saw the long trek to high-flying Premier Division side Plymouth Parkway in the Les Phillips Cup Quarter Final. Keynsham gave a great account of themselves, with Stefan Lee finishing off a flowing move midway through the first half. However, a defensive error saw the hosts draw level just before the interval. It was nip and tuck in the second half, but sadly for the Ks another error was ruthlessly punished with only five minutes to go, and they slipped to an unfortunate 2-1 defeat. An in-form Warminster Town were next up at Crown Fields, and in a tight game of few clearcut chances, it was Stef Lee again who finished off a great move in the 84th minute, much to the relief of another big home crowd. A visit to Calne Town followed a week later, and in terrible conditions with a gale blowing down the pitch, both teams did their best to play some football. The wind played a part in Keynsham’s goal, as skipper Harley Purnell’s out-swinging corner 10 minutes into the second half became an inswinger which fooled everyone and crept in at the far post. The 1-0 win was the Ks’ fourth victory

Euan named best junior in road race Keynsham cyclist Euan Taylor scooped the title of best junior after tackling a 53-mile road race around the Chew Valley. The 16-year-old came 10th overall in a field of 80 riders competing in the 2019 Bristol South Road Race on March 17. The contest took the riders from Bishop Sutton to Stowey Hill and Clutton. Euan was riding for Team Giant CC Halo Films and plans to compete for the team at events in Belgium, France and Italy this year.

Another clean sheet was just around the corner at Longwell Green Sports; however, this time Keynsham failed to take any of the few chances they created and had to be satisfied with a goalless draw. This result saw Cheddar leapfrog them again to go top by a single point. If Keynsham finish in second place, the matter of whether they will be promoted to the Premier Division is somewhat complicated! Due to the FA’s restructuring of non-league football, for the first time this season runners-up will not be guaranteed promotion. Out of the 19 “Step 6” divisions across the country, only the nine runnersup with the best points-pergame ratio will be promoted. Intriguingly the Ks currently have the ninth best record of the 19 second-placed teams, so it is going to be a nail-biting last five weeks of the season! Club president Alan Hulme reported on a turbulent beginning to 2018 for the Ship Inn. However, optimism grew as the year progressed and the pétanque club had a very successful year with keen internal competition and some great results in the region.
