Petition aims to on cuts to buses and hundreds

Hundreds of people have signed a petition aimed at forcing First into a U-turn over its plans to make cuts to buses serving the Park Estate in the south of Keynsham. The bus operator has revealed that it intends to reduce the number 38 from half-hourly to one an hour in the daytime from Monday to Saturday, while also withdrawing the service in the evening and on Sundays and bank holidays. People wishing to travel more frequently, the operator has said in an email to local bus users, will need to walk to Keynsham town centre. The changes, it says, follow a consultation with bus users in May and June about services between Bristol and Bath in which people said they were happy with the level of provision but wanted to see improvements to punctuality and reliability. More than 350 people took part in the consultation, said First, a figure blasted by those opposing the changes as “hardly proportional representation of the 16,000 residents of Keynsham”. At the time of going to print the online petition calling for the cuts to be halted had gathered almost twice the number of those who responded to First’s survey, with 685 supporters. Frequent bus user Oliver Hurley said the plans penalised people living in one of the most highly populated areas of the town and that people living on the Park Estate would face a

30-minute walk to and from Keynsham High Street to access bus services. In a letter to First urging a rethink, he said: “Even something as simple as going shopping on a Saturday will be difficult or impossible for many people who currently rely on the 38, not to mention the impact on commuters or anyone who needs to travel in the evenings. “After the numerous improvements that have been made to the 38 timetable in recent years, as well as muchimproved ticketing options, I am staggered that First have chosen to take such a massive backwards step.” Residents’ concerns have also been raised with council transport chiefs and First by Keynsham South ward councillors Alan Hale and Lisa O’Brien. Mr Hale said he believed the cuts would hit young residents, with no evening services into the neighbouring cities, as well as increasing isolation for elderly and disabled residents and disadvantaging those moving into new developments on the town’s southern edge. He said: “The new estates of The Meadows and Bilbie Green and the soon-to-bestarted Persimmon and Bloor Homes [developments] will be a significant distance from the High Street, assuming of course that you are physically able to walk such a ridiculous distance. In fact, when Bloor build their estate it will be nearer to walk

The statement adds: “The loss of evening and Sunday/ public holiday services on Service 38 reflects the fact that very few people have travelled at these times, and so the resource being used to provide them is being redeployed elsewhere.” In other changes affecting the town, Service 39 is being increased from hourly to halfhourly, while on Sundays and holidays buses will run every 20 minutes in the daytime and hourly in the evenings.

Food festival won’t return until 2017

Keynsham’s popular food festival has been cancelled for 2016 as no one has stepped forward to organise the event. The announcement was made by 1st Keynsham Scouts, who have hosted the festival at Scout HQ in Ashton Way for the last three years. The event is run entirely by volunteers and takes place in October, featuring a range of local food producers, retailers, cafes and restaurants. A spokesperson said: “Sadly, despite appeals nobody has come forward to manage the organisation of this year’s event. In the circumstances a decision has been taken to postpone for 2016 but to return even bigger and better in 2017. This is a great opportunity for businesses relating to food in our community to promote their business while at the same time raising funds for the Scouts, a local charity. So the build for 2017 starts today.” Anyone interested in getting involved in 2017’s festival can email scouts@1stkeynsham scouts.org.uk

One-way system for High set to get green light for A one-way system on Keynsham High Street is set to be introduced in spring 2017 in an experiment to improve the area for shoppers and tackle concerns about traffic in the town centre. The £200,000 trial is due to be signed off by Bath and North East Somerset Council transport chief Councillor Anthony Clarke after officers recommended that funding for the scheme is approved. As part of the trial, one carriageway will be temporarily closed to traffic and the extra space created dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. In a report published at the end of July, officers told Mr Clarke: “The implementation of a one-way scheme will reduce the volume of traffic passing through the High Street, which will improve air quality, improve the public realm, encourage walking and cycling by improving the pedestrian experience (with an anticipated increase in

footfall and subsequent uplift in retail economic performance) and improved cycle routes, improve the image of Keynsham as a whole and enhance the Conservation Area.” Historic England has identified the High Street, which is at the heart of the town’s Conservation Area, as “at risk”, the report adds. The details of the scheme will

be drawn up this year following approval, with the trial expected to start in mid-2017. Monitoring of traffic flow, safety, air quality and surveys of those using the High Street will be carried out to assess the impact of the one-way system, with officers saying they expected it would lead to people staying in the area longer and spending more in the shops.

An experimental traffic regulation order (TRO), which can remain in place for a maximum of 18 months, will need to be drawn up to implement the scheme. The report estimates the cost of making the changes permanent would be around £2 million, which would fund new paving, street furniture, signage, lighting and junction layouts.

Volunteers from Keynsham Foodbank are appealing for someone to step forward to help them collect the vital supplies used to support people in need. A volunteer who can drive, has use of a vehicle and can lift is urgently needed to pick up food donated in a drop box at the town’s Waitrose supermarket. The items are collected once a week on Tuesday and taken to the foodbank’s warehouse at Broadlands Academy, after which the volunteer would deliver items to replenish stocks at St Francis Church. Co-ordinator and chairman of the foodbank Alan Hale said: “While we have a good number of volunteers, most are already doing something and some more than just one job for the foodbank, so a fresh volunteer is required. It might be that if more than one person comes forward then the job could be shared so it might only be once a fortnight. “I would also take this opportunity to thank the community who kindly give to us through the drop boxes to

Is my dog at risk of lungworm? Lungworm can be fatal to dogs and it is easier than you’d think for your dog to become infected. Lungworm (also known as Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite commonly carried by slugs and snails. Dogs can become infected when they eat these pests (either intentionally or accidentally) or if they come into contact with their slime trial. Dogs of all ages and breeds can contract lungworm, however, younger dogs seem to be more prone to picking up the parasite. Also, dogs who are known to eat slugs and snails are considered higher risk. Some dogs do not show visible signs of a lungworm infection. However, there are some symptoms to look out for including coughing, tiring easily, nose bleeds, excessive bleeding (even from minor wounds), anaemia, weight loss, vomiting and/ or diarrhoea, or lethargy and depression.

Lungworm can be easily prevented by using a monthly spot-on or tablet treatment. These are available from your veterinary practice, and are very much encouraged as part of your pet’s regular prevention treatment. Speak to Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 for more information or to check if your dog is protected against lungworm. For those who are interested in learning more about the infection, Lungworm.co.uk has a number of stories about pet owners whose dogs have been affected.

The new book is available to buy for £3 from the town council offices

Book tells story of clocktower and town The artwork on Keynsham Clocktower is made up of a patchwork of pictures and details and now a new book is available to tell the full story behind them. The colourful publication takes a closer look at the towers’ three panels, which each have an iconic image at their base and a myriad of smaller images, each reflecting aspects of the town’s history right up to today. The book – Keynsham Clocktower Book: Telling the Story of Our Community’s History – has been produced by the Keynsham Arts Advisory Group and published by Bath and North East Somerset Council. It shows the pictures in detail and accompanies

them with explanations. A spokesperson said: “This is a delightful publication for both residents and visitors alike and a great souvenir of Keynsham.” The book is available to purchase for £3 from Keynsham Town Council Offices at 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham, BS31 1HF. Charity  founders appeal for help to avoid closure

A Saltford-based children’s charity facing closure next month is hoping for a lifeline. Clover House’s trustees say the organisation, which provides drug-free therapy for children suffering trauma, will close in September unless a solution is found after a drop in the funding it relies on from various sources. The charity, in Bath Road, was set up by Jill Gill and Basil Jones in 1996, developing treatments for youngsters based on nutrition, massage and imagery. Jill said they would like Clover House to survive but would be willing to work with another charity. She said: “Clover House is the only charity with a drug-free cure and consistent 75 per cent success rate. The trustees have come to a difficult decision, which I understand, but having spent 20 years developing this successful therapy, and with

so many traumatised children desperately needing help, we're considering all options to ensure our services remain available. “We would, ideally, prefer Clover House to continue, but are willing to share the secrets of our success with any charity that will consider adopting our techniques. “For a stand-alone ‘therapy centre’, a receptionist and therapy rooms are all that would be required and we’re hoping a national charity involved with children or mental health will consider our methods.” The charity has also launched a Save Clover House appeal, and supporters can make donations via its website. Any charities or organisations that would like to find out more about Clover House can contact Jill Gill on 01225 344047, email info@cloverhouse.org or visit http://cloverhouse.org

Baked is fresh start for park’s popular cafe The owner of a new business that has reopened the much-missed café in Keynsham Memorial Park says he is enjoying being part of a busy community. Salvatore Corsentino from Stockwood launched Baked just in time for Keynsham Music Festival last month after hearing the café was vacant and submitting a bid to Bath and North East Somerset Council to run it. He said: “I saw it as a good opportunity and we have completely refurbished it with new equipment. We’ve had really good feedback and support from

the community and I’m really happy with what we’ve done here.” Open seven days a week, from 9am-7pm, Baked offers homemade pizza and cakes, a range of hot food including chips, burgers and jacket potatoes, sandwiches, Marshfield ice cream, and hot and cold drinks. Mr Corsentino said he hopes one development at the cafe in future will be a covered seating area, adding: “Keynsham is getting quite big and this is a meeting place for many people so I think it needs a covered area.”

No shortage of support for John as he gets haircut for good cause A Keynsham schoolboy brought the summer term to an unusual end for his fellow pupils when he had his long hair chopped off in front of them during an assembly. Chandag Junior School pupils cheered on John Biddleston as his hair was carefully cut off in aid of two very good causes. John’s mum Jenni was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago and has been receiving treatment to beat the disease ever since. The family say they have had invaluable help from Macmillan Cancer Support during this time and, to say thank you, John decided two years ago to start growing his hair and raise some money through sponsorship when he finally had it cut. His hair won’t go to waste, either, as he has decided to send it to the Little Princess Trust to make a wig for a child who has lost their own hair through illness. Setting out to raise around

John Biddleston with mum Jenni and dad David; having his hair cut, above £200, the family have been amazed to see the total steadily climb, reaching £1,700 thanks to friends, relatives, John’s schoolmates and school staff. Dad David, who watched John have his hair cut along with mum Jenni, said they were very proud of what he had done. David said: “Macmillan has been by far the most helpful

since Jenni’s diagnosis, I don’t think we could have managed without the practical support and financial advice they have given. We put a post on Facebook about John’s fundraising and people have shared it, with support coming from friends and family and parents of children at the school. “We thought it might be

cheeky to ask for £200 but by the end of the first day we had reached £450, which was a nice shock.” After his haircut, which was carried out by Rachael Kiely from Reflections Training Academy, John said it felt strange to have short hair and added: “I was nervous, but now I’ve done it it’s great that I can think about someone getting my hair and I’m very happy.” Chandag Junior School head teacher Tim Dunning said: “John was very brave and it’s a fantastic thing to do for the Little Princess Trust – although he has told everyone he is not a little princess! We have been able to have conversations with the other children about doing things for other people and that reflects John and his family.” Anyone who wishes to donate to Macmillan Cancer Support via John’s fundraising page can do so at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/JohnBiddleston

Take chance to have say on mayor plans

There are just days left for people living across Bath and North East Somerset to have their say on plans to create a new elected Metro Mayor as part of a £1 billion devolution deal for the West of England. New powers, funding and responsibilities would be handed from central Government to a new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) if the deal goes ahead, with elections taking place in May 2017. A public consultation on the issue, involving residents of B&NES, Bristol and South Gloucestershire, ends on August 15. B&NES Council leader Tim Warren said: “Your say is very important. This deal is about stability and investment over the next three decades – it will affect you and your children. Therefore I encourage everybody to get involved and have your say on these important plans.” Visit www.westofengland devolution.co.uk/what-happensnext/or call 0117 922 2848 to take part.

Sharon kicks off her 60 challenges with skydive A Keynsham woman planning to complete 60 challenges in honour of her 60th birthday got off to flying start with a skydive. Sharon Dunford took the plunge at Old Sarum airfield in Salisbury on July 31 with daughter Esther in tow. The daring jump marked the start of a series of challenges, both big and small, that Sharon will be tackling in aid of two good causes. Funds raised through sponsorship will go to Keynsham youth charity One Community Trust, where Sharon is a trustee, and to the Carers Centre BANES to support young carers. Sharon said they are two causes she feels passionately about and she will be facing a variety of tasks to support them as she celebrates her 60th. She said: “I will be marking this auspicious occasion with 60 challenges, some easy (I like those), some relatively easy and some downright stupid.”

The list so far includes an abseil in the Avon Gorge, planting a tree, an alcohol-free month, a week without chocolate and joining next year’s Cotswold Way Challenge. She is also looking for

suggestions and has already collected £1,400 for the two causes. To find out more and donate, visit www.justgiving. com/fundraising/SharonDunford

ADVERTORIAL

Macmillan fundraising event proves popular during Wimbledon Opening Keynsham Photographic Society’s exhibition

Display puts focus on local photographers A group of keen photographers who meet every week in Keynsham have put their work on display in Bath for the first time. An exhibition by members of Keynsham Photographic Society was unveiled in July at the Guildhall by chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council Councillor Alan Hale. The display features images in a range of styles and from a cross-section of members with different levels of experience in photography. Councillor Hale said: “It was

a pleasure to host this exhibition which covers photographs of wide-ranging topics and I would like to encourage people to come in and have a look.” The exhibition by the society, whose photos are regularly featured in Keynshamvoice, runs until August 16 on the ground floor of the Guildhall and is free to enter. Wimbledon came to Spire Specialist Care Centre at Aztec West on July 7 when a fundraising event was held in aid of Macmillan to celebrate the centre’s second anniversary. Murray Mound was recreated with a big screen televising the afternoon’s play and a marquee kept off the fear of threatened showers. The event was well supported by ex-patients, local cancer support groups, GPs, consultants and staff from the centre and sister hospital Spire (The Glen) in Redland. Staff donated prizes for the tombola as did Starbucks and Alan Bendrey & Co hairdressers at Aztec West. Guests enjoyed afternoon tea, strawberries and cream and a glass of Pimms, a good time was had by all.

Creating a buzz about business

An entrepreneurial challenge from local business leaders got the ideas flowing among students at Wellsway School. Year 8 pupils were challenged to think creatively and identify a gap in the market for a new brand of bottled water that could help to raise money for good causes. Members of Saltford Business Network worked with students over the two-day challenge on July 11 and 12 to help them develop and finally present their business proposals, also donating prizes for the winners. Ex-Wellsway student David Hewett of iTeam Solutions Ltd said: “There was a definite buzz in the room when we announced that the prizes were Amazon vouchers. “It was great to see some of the team members come up with innovative and creative

ideas whilst others worked on the figures. Working together in business doesn’t necessarily mean all working on the same thing at the same time, but dividing the tasks between team members.” As well as their business idea, the teams’ success was also assessed on teamwork, communication, leadership and enthusiasm. More than 400 students took part in enterprise activities at the school and learnt about how to get involved in business through the Peter Jones’s Tycoons in Schools project.

Torch relay sparks excitement for Olympics Schools and sports clubs in Keynsham and Saltford united to celebrate the excitement of the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games for the second Keynsham & Saltford Torch Relay on July 8. Groups of six torch bearers nominated from each school and club took their turn in carrying the torch between Keynsham and Saltford, finally reaching Keynsham Cricket Club for a celebration evening. Sixth formers from Wellsway

School acted as officials throughout the event. Louise Riddoch, organiser, said: “I feel very lucky to live and work in such a fantastic community. It was an absolute delight to run with the torch bearers on Friday and to be welcomed by all the school and clubs. The entire day was spent among people of all ages with huge smiles on their faces and it was a great opportunity for the whole community to be united.”

Youth and education Support helps Scouts close in on £25k target

Catching fish or panning for gold in a river in Wales?

Our modern-day Giants need some help 1st Keynsham Scouts update us as they reach the £10,000 mark in appeal for new floor, enjoy a summer adventure and share ways the community can get involved We are delighted to announce that following a recent grant of £1,000 from Keynsham Town Council we have now banked more than £10,000 towards our target of £25,000 for a new headquarters floor since the appeal’s launch in April. In addition to the this grant we are receiving many donations of support from right across the community. They are all making a difference, so thank you to everybody who has donated to date. Have you sponsored a board yet? Thanks to Somerset Farmers’ Markets, the Scouts will be having a stall at the market in Keynsham on Saturday, September 10. As well as the chance to sponsor a board you will also be able to view some of the group’s records from its 107year history. We are challenging every family who has a Scouting connection to try to find us three sponsors at £10 per board. If you would like a sponsor form, email giants@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or why not pop down to the market and take a look? Three really will be a magic number for us.

funds. So we thought who were those Scouts who were doing the asking? Now, thanks to a Keynsham resident who has given us a copy of the Keynsham Journal, believed to be a Scout newspaper, we can reveal some names. Do you know them, are you related to them? Is it you? If so, the Scout group would love to hear from you. Simply ring 0117 986 9455 or email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or speak to any leader. In 1945 this would have been a massive undertaking – we would love to capture some memories as we seek to improve our existing HQ as their legacy lives on.

While the focus is well and truly on finding the funds for a new hall floor, we are trying not to let that activity get in the way of the development of the young people. In July we sought adults who would like to spend some time supporting the leader teams by undertaking administration roles. Thank you to those who came forward, we still have room for more. This month we are seeking a person or persons who might like to help us manage our lettings of the Scout HQ, which is mainly at weekends. If this could be you, let us know – training is provided.

Of course, we would never say no to someone who wanted to work directly with the young people. Beavers (six to eight) on Tuesday and Friday, Cubs (eight to 10) on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Scouts (10 to 14) on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Explorers (14 to 18) on Fridays. Simply email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk and we will tell you more.

Principal has outstanding ambitions for academy A new principal who will be joining Broadlands Academy at the start of 2017 says he is looking forward to leading the school on its journey towards obtaining outstanding status. James Hall, who is currently deputy head teacher at Hayesfield Girls’ School in Bath, is taking on the leadership role from January. Mr Hall lives in Timsbury and has previously worked at Somervale School in Midsomer Norton and for the Cabot Learning Federation. He said: “Broadlands Academy is a fantastic school that has shown significant improvement and development over recent years. The Ofsted Good grading, awarded in January 2016, shows that the school is already on the road to being outstanding and it is my ambition that Broadlands gets this recognition.

James Hall joins Broadlands Academy as principal in January “I do believe all students deserve success and should be able to achieve their own ambitions.” He added: “I am delighted to be appointed the new principal of Broadlands Academy and look forward to leading the school in the next stage of its outstanding journey.” Mr Hall takes over from

current principal Dean Anderson, who has been promoted to the post of director of education (secondary) for the newly-formed Reach4 Academy Trust and leaves at the end of this month. Jonathan de Sausmarez, chair of the Broadlands Academy Management Board, said: “The examination results have improved rapidly since Mr Anderson took up post in January 2013 and Broadlands is a very different school and in a very strong position moving forwards. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mr Anderson all the best for his new role and thank him on your behalf for helping to ensure that Broadlands students can achieve their potential.” Stephen Ferguson, current head of school at Broadlands Academy, will serve as interim principal for the autumn term.

Sporting success for young competitors Chandag Junior School has had a very busy few sporting weeks achieving excellent results at B&NES, county and national level, writes our correspondent. Chandag Girls Swimming Squad qualified for the English Schools National Swimming Relays for Primary Schools which were held at The Ponds Forge National Swimming Centre in Sheffield. The squad of five girls, Poppy Isom, Evie Cushing, Olivia White, Phoebe Nethercott and Florence Elvins, performed excellently in their freestyle and medley relays and finished in a very creditable 19th and 20th in the country. Many thanks to all the parents who supported the girls and a special thanks to Harvem of Keynsham, who sponsored the polo shirts and hoodies. Chandag swimmers were in action again in the Keynsham Schools Division 1 and 2 swimming galas. In the Division 1 gala Chandag had 21

Chandag Girls Swimming Squad, who took part in the English Schools National Swimming Relays at Sheffield swimmers representing them, from Year 3 to Year 6. They faced stiff opposition from Saltford, Holymead, St John’s, St Keyna and Chew Stoke. Chandag and Holymead were neck and neck throughout the gala but Chandag managed to secure victory by one point against last year’s winners Holymead. In the Division 2 gala, Chandag B were represented by 35 swimmers from across Years 3 to 6. Again the gala was very close in terms of races won, but Chandag B won by two points. Chandag gymnasts were also

involved in the Level 3 Wesport Summer School Games held at Bath University. The Year 3/4 Level 1 team and Year 5/6 Level 1 team had won their qualification events at Baskervilles Gymnastics Club earlier in the year. They competed against teams from across the four unitary authorities and performed excellently on vault and on floor, The Year 3/4 team just missed out on a medal by 0.2, finishing in fourth place and the Year 5/6 team finished in a very creditable sixth place.

Infant school in bid to join trust Families are being asked for their views on Chandag Infant School’s plans to join the growing Wellsway Multi Academy Trust. The school’s governing body has announced it is working towards conversion to academy status and is now asking parents, staff and the community to take part in a consultation, which runs until September 16. A meeting for parents of the 180 pupils has already been held and another is planned early in the new term. An application will then go to the Department for Education and a final decision will be made by the Regional Schools Commissioner. Head teacher Annie Smart said: “Our governors see this as a great opportunity, in an uncertain educational landscape, to secure the future of the school for the benefit of our children and of future generations.”

She said the decision had the governors’ unanimous backing and the school believed the advantages of joining WMAT included the opportunity to play an active role in pupils’ development from the age of four to 18, greater chance to improve school premises by sharing capital costs and sharing staff expertise and facilities by pooling knowledge and resources. Mrs Smart added: “We very much look forward to developing a collaborative and supportive working relationship with Wellsway MAT.” WMAT includes two large secondary schools – Wellsway School and Sir Bernard Lovell School; two smaller secondaries – The Bath Studio School and IKB Academy; an all-age special school, Aspire Academy; and St John's CE Primary. Saltford CE Primary is due to join in September.

Role transforms life for Jamie, 22

A six-month placement with a local radio station has been life-changing for a Keynsham man with Asperger’s syndrome. Jamie Marsden, 22, above, secured a traineeship with Somer Valley FM through Bath College’s pre-apprenticeship programme, learning to script news bulletins and read the lunchtime and afternoon news. Jamie said he previously struggled to get job interviews for jobs and lacked the qualifications for the roles he was interested in – but he left the radio station a “changed man”. He now has a job as a data controller, is retaking his A levels to go to university and is planning to move into supported living. He said: “Thanks to my experiences at Somer Valley FM I got interviews for the first time in

years. I also began to take charge of my life.” He added: “I was stuck in a downward spiral, but I leave my traineeship a changed man. On the last day of my traineeship I was interviewed by BBC Somerset. I never thought that would happen, it just goes to show how much of a difference six months can really make. I’m not the Jamie defined by my Asperger’s but a new Jamie defined by my aspirations.” Following the success of Jamie’s traineeship, Somer Valley FM has taken on three more trainees. Bath College’s pre-apprenticeship programme is aimed at young autistic people, aged 16 to 24, who want to be able to work independently. Josh, Lucy and Joey with the winning onion and the trophy

Young gardeners rise to Rotary challenge Green-fingered pupils at Chandag Infant School proved they’re top of the crops when it comes to growing veg in a competition run by the Rotary Club of Keynsham. The club challenged the town’s infant and junior pupils to grow the biggest onion they could before the end of summer term. A spokesperson said: “We are pleased to say that all the schools took part and a number of the onions grew to a very presentable size, despite rather unhelpful weather conditions.” The winning onion, measuring

10cm across, was grown by Chandag Infant School, with Chandag Junior School Class 3 coming a close second. Josh, Lucy and Joey received the Roland Reed Cup and winner’s certificate on behalf of the infant school as well as some crayons for the class and a voucher for 10 minutes’ extra playtime. The competition was launched at the Rotary Club’s plant fair earlier this year, which raised £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Volunteers ‘privileged’ to show off town as judges admire hard work

Green-fingered volunteers pulled out all the stops as South West in Bloom judges arrived in Keynsham to assess the town’s displays, reports Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for their verdict... After weeks of planning and preparation for the South West in Bloom judging, Keynsham in Bloom Community Group volunteers, along with local community groups, finally welcomed South West in Bloom judges to Keynsham on Friday, July 15. It was a wonderful day and the judges were blown away by the work that is being carried out here in Keynsham. Judge Lesley Jelleyman thanked us for a very “passionate” tour. Fellow judge Richard Taylor was very impressed with our Memorial Park and complimented the work of both the parks maintenance team and the community groups involved in the park for their hard work that makes it such a

It was a wonderful day and a privilege to showcase our town and communities to the judges, and at times a little emotional to see the hard work that the community groups have been doing over the last year. The South West in Bloom regional awards presentation is being held at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton. So fingers crossed we will be bringing home another Gold award. A celebration lunch and presentation to the judges was held after judging at Scout Headquarters, with over 30 members of the community groups attending and meeting with the judges.

often, a well-informed and interesting economic theory has turned out to be entirely wrong and food production has on average increased by 2 per cent per annum. This has been achieved by increasing yields through the use of sophisticated technology. Tanlake is part of this process and in combination with better and more technologically innovative tractors fields can be mapped and then fertilised with great precision. This helps improve soil quality, saves costs and boosts productivity. It was my good fortune to see how this happens in practice. The machines are truly amazing, I was shown a John Deer tractor that costs a little over £100,000 being

L put through its paces. It is at the cutting edge of driverless technology and can manoeuvre around a field with little human interaction, indeed the vehicle goes almost right up to a hedge before turning of its own accord, although a touch on the steering wheel will bring it back to manual control. Understanding how the latest combination of hardware and software is improving agriculture productivity is fascinating. Driving a tractor is certainly exciting but the future of farming will be increasingly dependent on using this type of technology effectively and it is important that North East Somerset should be at the forefront of this activity. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Work together to solve traffic issues

I felt that last month’s letter regarding air quality in Saltford from Lib Dem activist Farida Wilson was particularly unhelpful and unnecessarily party-political. All of us who live in Saltford are more than aware of the problems we face with traffic on the A4 and the air pollution this causes, and trying to find ways to address this should not be a party-political issue. There is no quick-fix solution to the traffic and air quality problems on the A4, as illustrated by the fact the Lib Dems failed to find a solution in all the time they were running the council. The fundamental issue is therefore what practical measures

Our democracy isn’t working. Theresa May was elected by 199 Tory MPs to be our Prime Minister. She is now changing the whole direction of our government away from the Conservative manifesto which was supported by less than 36 per cent of those voting in May 2015. Worse than that, less than 40 per cent of those eligible to vote supported Leave and yet off we go out of the EU! The final straw for me is the idea of an extra tier of government called a Metro Mayor which is about to be imposed on us without our opinion counting. Originally we were told that all four authorities that used to be Avon had to agree. North Somerset didn’t so we are going ahead anyway with the remaining three. In May 2016, we voted against a mayor for B&NES by 80 per cent to 20 per cent and now a different type of mayor is going to be thrust upon us without a vote because clearly we got it wrong last time!

can be taken to address the problem. Some steps such as improved emission standards for cars and lorries, particularly diesel engines, will go some way to help improve air quality in the coming years. Looking at whether there could be more direct buses to Bath Spa University could also help, as would increasing the frequency of trains between Bristol and Bath in order to reduce the number of people commuting by car between these two cities. However, as Saltford residents know, the crux of the issue is really infrastructure. Reopening a train station in the village could provide an attractive alternative to using a car to get to Bristol, Bath and further afield. However, if a large number of people drove their cars and parked at the station this could actually increase local traffic on parts of the A4 and result in additional parking problems on nearby streets – and so these issues would have to be considered carefully in any plans as they come forward. The biggest impact that could be achieved in reducing traffic and pollution through the village would clearly be the long-discussed Saltford bypass. I have long supported the idea of having a bypass for the village, and surveys have shown that the majority of Saltford residents would be in favour. However, the challenge is not simply funding but also identifying an acceptable route, and the fact the idea has received opposition in the past from certain quarters, including Liberal Democrats. While I have my own reservations about the West of England devolution deal currently being consulted upon, it could provide the funding

Race day brings firm closer to finish line in £50k charity drive A charity race day organised by a Keynsham company has raised nearly £34,000 to go towards urgent research at Bristol hospitals into a debilitating autoimmune illness. Building contractor Dribuild hosted an afternoon of racing at Bath Racecourse on July 12, inviting businesses from across the region to join the activities and support its charity of the year, Above and Beyond. The event raised a staggering £33,978 towards the firm’s £50,000 target, all of which will go towards research into immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), which destroys platelets and can cause potentially life-threatening bleeding in sufferers, as well as severe tiredness. The Dribuild team chose the charity after meeting 19-year-old Megan Abernethy-Hope, who despite being diagnosed with ITP in 2014 managed to win the Miss Bristol crown in 2015. Megan was treated at the Bristol

Matt Tyler, Dave Kipling, Mike Holt and Lee Robinson of Dribuild with Above and Beyond’s Lorna Clarke Royal Infirmary by ITP research lead Dr Charlotte Bradbury, undergoing chemotherapy, a splenectomy and taking steroids. Megan said she was delighted by the success of the racing day. She said: “Today has been absolutely phenomenal and has honestly brought me to tears. The generosity of everyone here has been outstanding and I need to say a huge thanks to Dribuild and everyone who donated anything from 50p to £100 because I know it’s going to make such a massive difference to ITP.

“For those who are already suffering with it, and unfortunately those who are yet to be diagnosed, I just want to say you’ve got the support of the South West behind you and we’re going to help fight this.” The event was attended by a number of firms, including HSBC, Maxwells Chartered Accountants and Octagon Consultancy, and included tombola, games of heads or tails and a charity auction hosted by Geoff Twentyman of BBC Radio Bristol.

Dribuild managing director Matt Tyler said: “Following on from the success of last year’s charity event, we are thrilled to be back again as race day sponsor, raising vital funds for a charity close to our hearts. Above & Beyond is a fantastic organisation whose work stretches from providing the latest equipment to funding new research in Bristol’s city centre hospitals – no doubt we’ve all been touched at some point in our lives by the brilliant care the doctors and nurses provide. “The support and generous donations we have received from all of those here today has been incredible. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed towards our target of £50,000, which we’re now well on our way to achieving.” Find out more about Above and Beyond and its work for Bristol’s nine city centre hospitals at www.aboveandbeyond.org.uk

We’ve reached the end of the school terms with officers having attended all of our local primary and secondary schools to deliver Crime and Consequences talks. We conduct these talks as part of our battle against crime and antisocial behaviour in the school holidays. They are just a gentle reminder to the children of the standard of behaviour that we expect from them and what can happen if they fall below it. Our talks are always welcomed by the schools as they see their pupils as representatives for them during the holidays. Last month we also attended the Avon Fire Service open day at the new fire station on Durley Hill in Keynsham. The day was a lot busier than expected, with over 1,800 people visiting. I was there to meet and greet people in what was a hectic five-hour event. The mobile police station seems to be a big attraction, with hundreds of selfies being taken wearing the different policing hats. We gave away hundreds of “stranger danger” hand

puppets and stickers. The demonstrations run by the fire brigade were exciting and informative as to how and why they conduct their rescue processes. We have no real crime trends at the moment in the area. Singular incidents of criminal damage, vehicle crime and public order are occurring but none that can be linked together. Please remember to close doors and windows on ground levels so as not to give easy access to your property during the hot evenings. Opportunist thieves are out and about looking to exploit these weaknesses in security. The brighter weather sometimes gives us different problems with visitors to the

with PC James Evans more picturesque areas in Keynsham and Saltford. We recently experienced traffic chaos in Saltford where, on a beautiful evening, hundreds of people descended on the areas of The Shallows and Mead Lane by the river. With parking in these areas being limited, this led to gridlock and, although not as bad as Dover, it caused the beat team a few issues as they looked to free up the areas. Please remember that if it looks busy, other parking options are available and there are a number of footpaths that can get you to these locations. We are looking into options with the council’s traffic management to prevent these problems. The other concern that we have is people swimming in

the river at Saltford. Both the weirs at The Riverside and the Jolly Sailor have strong currents and both have claimed victims in the recent past. I understand that I will not stop people from swimming and enjoying themselves but I just want people to be aware of the dangers and to take precautions to prevent incidents. The locations do have safety equipment in place so just familiarise yourself with this. We do not advocate going into the water, but using the supplied safety equipment could save someone’s life. Please enjoy the holidays, but be safe. Pc James Evans 3803 Beat Manager

Pomegranate’s serving up some exciting changes this summer...

A bustling restaurant by day and night proves there are plenty of diners in and around Keynsham who share chef Nedim Orak’s passion for Mediterranean food and quality local produce. Pomegranate first opened its doors at the heart of the town eight years ago and has gained a firm following that has only grown since its move to new premises at Market Walk last year. The bright and airy restaurant with its outdoor seating area has provided the perfect bistro-style setting to enjoy Nedim’s menu, which is undergoing some exciting changes in August. From the start of this month, diners will find a new breakfast menu that reflects Pomegranate’s emphasis on quality cuisine. Gone are the full English fry-ups and bacon baps, and in are delicious dishes such as eggs Royale, eggs Benedict and fresh Mediterranean-style breakfast platters with halloumi and vegetables. Nedim said it was a change he had been planning since the move and was delighted to be able to offer customers the new selection. He said: “I’m really pleased to have a breakfast menu that reflects our style of food. I feel that if you go somewhere to have a fry-up for breakfast, you wouldn’t necessarily think to go there for an evening meal. “We aim to give people fresh food that is as local as possible. We offer healthy, simple dishes and the quality of the food speaks for itself.” The Pomegranate team is also delighted to welcome award-

winning pizza chef Aldo Biscotti, formerly of Farrells Restaurant, who launched a brand new pizza menu on August 2, which will be available during the day and in the evening. Aldo joins Nedim and fellow chef Marco Tesone in the open kitchen, where guests at the fully licensed restaurant, which seats 60 people, can see them at work preparing their food, including tapas, mezze, pasta, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, as well as salads, wraps, a range of sweet treats and more. Keeping the restaurant’s carbon footprint as low as possible and supporting other local businesses is a priority for

Nedim and wife Ula, who source their meat and other produce from Newton Farm, in nearby Newton St Loe, buy their salad ingredients from the Severn Project, get their coffee from Bristol-based Extract Coffee and work with an independent wine merchant in Cirencester, all long-standing relationships they formed in Pomegranate’s early days. Ula said the “Keep it local, keep it Keynsham” ethos was something the restaurant strongly supported and added: “We use local shops and were the first place to exhibit local artists. We are a local café for local people and are always trying to

make people feel at home and we know so many of the people who come in and even what they will order. “We value every customer and our aim is that everyone leaves satisfied.” As well as providing a place to relax and enjoy good food and friendly service, Pomegranate also hosts popular live music evenings accompanied by tapas and mezze buffets, something Nedim and Ula will continue, alongside their exhibitions of local art. Any artists who would like to display their work on the restaurant’s walls are urged to get in touch.

Appeal for support to keep paths open

People who enjoy walking in the countryside around Saltford are being asked to help keep a network of local paths open. Saltford Community Association has launched an appeal to raise £3,000 to fund 4.5km of permissive paths across local farmland. Government subsidies for public access were withdrawn in 2013 and since then the paths have been funded for a year by Eveleighs Estate Agents, while this year the target was met by individual donations and a contribution of more than £600 from Day Lewis Pharmacy. The fund for 2016/17 has so far reached £2,200 and the SCA is appealing for people who would like to see the paths remain open to consider making a donation. Donations can be made by cash or cheque to Saltford Hall, Wedmore Road, Saltford BS31 3BY or by Paypal to chair@ saltfordhall.co.uk. Full details and a gift aid form can be found at www.saltfordhall. co.uk/Permissive_paths.html

It may be another year to wait until Saltford Festival returns, but there’s plenty going on in the village in the meantime to keep residents of all ages entertained. As ever, Saltford Hall is at the heart of the action with music, drama, film, charity events and fairs part of the packed programme. South African singer Sissy Fortuin will be next to take to the stage, performing popular, jazz and African songs on Saturday, August 6, at a charity music night where she will also be joined by local acts 2D (Steve Brown and Dave Halton), Brian Dimery and Tony Williams and friends. Doors open from 7pm with the performance starting at 7.30pm. Tickets, at £10, include beef stroganoff or a veggie alternative and the event is in aid of nurse training in South Africa, Help for Heroes, Parkinsons UK and the

Saltford Saltford Community Association – email events@saltfordhall. co.uk or visit the box office (mornings only). The recently launched Community Cinema at the hall has proved popular, with screenings planned for the year ahead. Family favourite Paddington will be shown at 4.30pm on August 5, followed by Bridge of Spies at 7.30pm. Dad’s Army will follow on September 16, The Martian on October 28 and a Christmas film yet to be decided on December 3. A fully licensed bar is available during screenings, as well as ice cream, and tickets cost £5. Local performers also take to the stage several times a year, with shows from Saltford Drama Club, SCAMP (Saltford Community Association Musical Productions) and Saltford Panto Club – which is currently inviting local people to join its

Find out more about events at www.saltfordhall.co.uk Until October, there is also the chance to step back in time to Saltford’s past as the village’s Brass Mill opens its doors to the public on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10am-4pm. The mill, complete

with a furnace and working water wheel, is the only survivor from a group of 18th-century buildings in the Avon valley where copper and brass goods were made and is maintained by a group of volunteers, who also carry out research into the industry. Find out more about the historic site and visiting at www.brassmill. com And for those keen to find out more about Saltford and its roots, you’ll find plenty of interest at Saltford Environment Group’s Online Museum – www. saltfordenvironmentgroup.co.uk – which has a growing collection of fascinating facts and images that are revealing more about the village’s long history and its residents all the time. Focus on Saltford Competitors take slow route to success in group’s cycle challenge Slow and steady wins the race, goes the adage – and a competition in Saltford recently proved how true that is. Saltford Environment Group held its second Slow Cycle challenge last month, inviting competitors to cycle a 25-metre stretch as slowly as they possibly could without putting their feet on the ground. The contest was held at Saltford Primary School’s summer fair, making a return after it debuted at Saltford Festival last year. Testing cyclists’ balance and control, the challenge was won by Ben Scott who took an impressive five minutes and five seconds to complete the course. In the junior section, for those aged 11 and under, Benny Hodgson won with a time of 44 seconds. Organisers, from Saltford

Grimes was a long-established Keynsham grocer and their shop was on Temple Street for many years. In the early 1960s they moved a short distance to these corner premises at the bottom of Rock Road. As the traditional grocery shop gave way to the self-service era, the corner was rebuilt to become a Gateway supermarket and is now home to Iceland. Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Recent visits

The society has run several visits to places of interest recently. Furthest away was Kingston Lacy House near Wimborne, where 35 members enjoyed a day visit by coach. A guided tour in small groups gave us the stories behind the collection of priceless artworks and furniture built up by the Bankes family After time exploring the gardens and grounds, the group took a break at Shaftesbury before returning home.

An insight into the Cold War

Early last month, a dozen members visited a relic of the Cold War that was little known at the time and is even less known today. In the late 1950s, the government set up a network of about 1,600 monitoring stations

across Britain, staffed by the volunteers of the Royal Observer Corps, to determine the position of any nuclear blasts and then to measure the resulting fallout. The nearest of these to Keynsham was at Burnett, on the edge of the former military site at Gypsy Lane, but when the network was thinned down in 1968 this was one of those abandoned. The buried concrete structure is still there but is inaccessible and empty so there is really nothing to visit. However, another of the

stations in the same group, on the Mendips above West Harptree, is one of the very few that has been kept in its original condition and is open, by arrangement, to groups of visitors. At ground level there is little to see, as shown in the picture, but climbing down a 12ft vertical ladder takes you into a rectangular concrete box slightly smaller than a domestic garage. In the event of attack, this would have been home to three men for a fortnight. Former Chief Observer Mike Parfitt demonstrated how the various items of monitoring equipment operated and explained the communications arrangements. Dating from the pre-digital age, the techniques seemed somewhat primitive but fortunately their efficacy was never put to the test. It was an unusual but interesting place to discover.

Mr Hale, who is chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, is inviting nominations for this year’s Chairman’s Community Awards 2016/2017. The awards recognise volunteers, community leaders, organisations, carers and local businesses for the positive impact they have on their communities. The second category – the Business in the Community Award – is awarded to a business actively supporting its community. Project returns to share out town’s fruit harvest Transition Keynsham’s abundance project is gearing up for a second year to redistribute surplus fruit from residents’ back gardens to schools and community groups around the area. Last year 10 volunteers chopped, pressed, preserved and gave away more than 50 crates of apples and pears. Among the recipients were pupils at Chandag Junior School, who said “apple day” had become the highlight of their week. This year the group is aiming to expand the scheme, giving even more surplus fruit to more people. To help them towards their goal, Transition Keynsham has been awarded a grant of just over £470 by Keynsham Town Council to purchase apple picking and preserving equipment. The group collected the award at a ceremony last month and a spokesperson said: “Transition Keynsham would

l My Path Leads to Tibet by Sabriye Tenberken in Large Print Sabriye Tenberken became progressively blind at the age of 12, but with all the European structure for blind people, she could continue her studies as anyone else and decided to do a degree in Asian Culture. She went travelling to Tibet and discovered there was no help for blind children, and strong beliefs that when you are blind you are possessed by some kind of demon and you’ve been punished for crimes in your previous life. It didn’t deter our young German lady who decided to change the life of children in this remote part of the world. (She has received more than 20 awards and honours for her incredible work.) This book describes her journey, and what she “sees” is really an invitation to better understand blind people. She is really brave, nothing seems to stop her from helping others and she gives you this kind of positive energy and will to explore the world. I highly recommend this

l Melt: Ice Cream Sensations To Make at Home by Claire Kelsey As the summer beckons and we hope for warm summer days and nights, this book is all things ice cream. Claire Kelsey has a passion for ice cream and in this book she serves up over 100 recipes, some with unusual tastes and combinations such as gorgonzola and honey or clementine and olive oil but also firm favourites such as clotted cream and tutti frutti! There are helpful explanations of the utensils you may need and churning advice. However, there are a number of recipes that do not need churning. So whether you like a more boozy ice cream, fruity, spicy or nutty flavours, this book will be a great inspiration. All laid out in a modern, colourful and stylish way – this is a mouth-watering treat of a book!

l The Holiday Home by Fern Britton This is Fern Britton’s third novel and follows on from her debut novel New Beginnings. It’s a light-hearted, fun read ideal for long, lazy summer days either in the garden or on a beach. It tells the tale of the Carew sisters as they embark on their yearly holiday to Cornwall. Here we meet Prudence, a workaholic businesswoman who receives a shock reminder

that nothing can be taken for granted, and Constance, the opposite, a homemaker who has always been outwitted by her sister but enough is enough. A surprise visitor brings all this resentment bubbling to the surface and a hidden secret is revealed. Can the two sisters survive the summer and move forward from the past? A charming, friendly book about complicated friendship and love. l In the Summer Time by Judy Astley From the pen of the ever popular writer Judy Astley, and set again in Cornwall, we meet Miranda who returns to the same village she holidayed in when she was 16. It has been 20 years and the gorgeous cove appears the same but there are more smart incomers, fewer locals and more luxury yachts in the harbour. She has returned with her mother, Clare, who wants to scatter the ashes of her late husband; Miranda’s teenage children and eventually her sister Harriett join the group. However, both Clare and Miranda meet up with some familiar faces from the past and revisit feelings that they thought had long disappeared. This will be a holiday for Miranda full of unexpected surprises. A warm-hearted book about the relationship between the three generations, romance, friends from the past and all set against the wonderful backdrop of the Cornish countryside.

Park holds onto its Green Flag status

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham It’s undeniable that leaving the EU will have a profound effect on how we grow and buy our food. Prices may go up or down. Foodstuffs may come from further away or nearer to home. Farmers may face further constraints or be freer to do what they do best. As yet, we don’t know. The next few months and years – as politicians negotiate the terms of our divorce, and businesses negotiate the new trade landscape – will be an opportunity for citizens and politicians to co-create better food, farming and fisheries policies for the UK; ones that are fair for people, planet and animals. We’ve got a unique opportunity to take the best of what we learned from Europe and build on it. We can protect and enhance our animal welfare standards; ensure that our

farms are rewarded for giving nature a home; and protect agricultural workers. There may be pressure on the government to go in the opposite direction: a race to the bottom, where the only value is value for money. It’s crucial that we don’t let that happen. A couple of weeks ago, over 80 food, farming, fair trade, poverty, animal welfare, wildlife, health and environmental organisations wrote a letter to the government, arguing that good food, farming and fishing policies must be central to any post EU Referendum strategy for the UK.

They say that better food, farming and trade polices can help cut greenhouse gas emissions from farming and food industries by 80 per cent by 2050, and promote healthier diets to combat heart disease cancers, diabetes and obesity. This will save the NHS (and taxpayers) millions of pounds a year. It seems like a no-brainer, but will the government listen? It’s early days, and the jury’s still out. But whether we end up having a race to the top or the bottom, these decisions that shape our food system will affect us all.

Keynsham Memorial Park has received a top honour for the eighth year running in recognition of its facilities and high standards of maintenance. The popular park has once again received the Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy, along with four other public spaces managed by Bath and North East Somerset Council. Councillor Martin Veal, Cabinet member for community services, said: “Supporting cleaner, greener and healthier communities is one of the top six priorities of the council’s Cabinet, and Green Flag awards demonstrate that our area has parks of the very highest quality, which are available for free for local people to use as well as visitors. “I would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved in looking after these areas which bring huge benefit to local communities.” This year, the Green Flag mark of quality has been awarded to a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces nationally.

Back to nature with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group The first Saturday in July saw members of the Avon Wildlife Trust, mainly from Keynsham’s group, enjoying the varied habitats of Stockwood’s local nature reserve, writes chairman Dave Sage. The early drizzle soon cleared and the sun revealed the site in all its glory. There was plenty of birdlife, including blackcaps, chiff-chaffs, goldfinches and thrushes; insects, notably marbled white and meadow brown butterflies, and five-spot burnet moths; meadow plants represented by pyramidal orchids, knapweed, grass vetchling, comfrey, bird’s foot trefoil, pignut, yellow rattle and melilot. We visited some reedbeds, well-concealed at the far end of the reserve, via a traditional apple orchard (worth a visit in the autumn when the fruit is ripe!). We were impressed

In the Garden Shall we be glad or sorry to see the end of July? We recorded day temperatures ranging from 14C to 29.8C in our garden, and that was in the shade. The clematis did not like it, and neither did the astrantia, which just collapsed in the heat. Mostly, however, with some

On the Plot With summer in full swing cropping is well under way with early potatoes, courgettes, beans, mange tout and peas performing well. With this in mind it’s a good idea to make a note of what the plot has yielded so that you can adjust the amount of space allocated to each vegetable to suit your needs in coming years. Avoiding a glut is nigh on impossible so my friends get supplies of my surplus. After that I use the freezer where practical, but I find that the frozen item is never as good as that picked and eaten fresh. It is important to keep picking the crop to

judicious watering, the garden remained in good shape. The grass grew very well due to the copious rainfall and, once it dried out, was quite lush and cut quite well. The top fruit is looking variable. The Williams pear looks to have a light crop, the Bramley apple seems to be about normal and the plums and damsons are beginning to fill out. We have a Belle de Louvain plum which has a strange habit. Each year it fruits but only on one side of the tree, and never the same side two seasons following. It is in an open situation subject to wind, rain and hot sun. So why does it do this? August brings the time for some summer pruning. I usually cut back the plums and damsons

as the fruit is picked. It saves climbing over the trees twice, and they seem to benefit from it. The wisteria, despite two prunings this year, has put on another coating of foliage and some long extensions. I shall cut back the extensions to about five or six leaves, and reduce the shorter shoots to a couple of spurs. It flowered very well this year and produced several flushes of the typical long flowers. To say “thank you” to it I shall give it a good watering and some feed. Geraniums are a good perennial plant to have in the garden. They can give flowers from March to September, and manage quite with a shortage of water, or extreme heat. They come in a number of colours and

blooms, and will be around for a long time in the garden. Apart from lily beetle, black spot has been severe this summer. I have sprayed three times since April and while some roses seem clear, two roses in particular suffer badly. I have given them another spray and a little scattering of Top Rose in the belief that a well-fed plant will survive. I also keep the area around them clear of any diseased leaves, and burn or bin them, definitely not composted. One final thought for the future. Think about buying and planting bulbs. Buy them soon while they are fresh and be ready to plant in September in good numbers and sit back and wait for spring.

encourage further yields because once the plant has produced its fruit then the amount of further flowering and fruit will decrease. The weather has tended to be on the dry side with the infrequent showers having little impact on soil moisture, so if the dry spell continues keep watering. If you are growing pumpkins, check to see how many fruit have formed. Once you have enough and they are bigger than a tennis ball then the plant can be stopped from spreading by pinching out the growing shoot. If you are looking for big pumpkins then I suggest a maximum of two per plant is adequate. However, don’t do this with butternut squash – just let

them spread. I have cropped the garlic and spring-sown shallots and onions and these are set out to dry. Sort through the crop and dispose of any suspected rotten ones as these can spoil the good ones once stored. When fully dried they can be put away for storage, which in my case is normally in nets in my garage where it is dry and cool. Cropping the onions and potatoes leaves room for autumn planting of vegetables that will survive the winter and August is the time to make sure that the area is prepared ready for sowing later. Dig over the area and incorporate some well rotted manure or compost and keep it clear of weeds. My autumn

planting will include garlic, broad beans and Japanese onions but not in the same area as this year. Another tip is to avoid autumn sowing where potatoes have been grown because the chances are that despite your best efforts there will be some tubers left in the ground which will survive the winter and annoyingly appear in the middle of the planted area next spring. I always recommend digging the potato area at least twice to try and ensure this does not happen. Seed sowing will be almost finished now but you can take a chance on a warm September by making some late sowings.

Thought for the Month with Mike Burke, Missioner and Team Vicar, Keynsham Team Ministry The American comic George Burns once said: “Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair.” I guess when it comes to politics we all think that we know best. The recent political debate surrounding the European Union referendum produced some very lively exchanges – claims and counter-claims about costs and benefits of our membership, followed by a result few anticipated and a political response suggesting panic and bewilderment. We live in uncertain times. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York responded to this atmosphere by issuing the following statement: “As citizens of the United Kingdom, whatever our views during the referendum campaign, we must

now unite in a common task to build a generous and forward looking country, contributing to human flourishing around the world. We must remain hospitable and compassionate, builders of bridges and not barriers. Many of those living among us and alongside us as neighbours, friends and work colleagues come from overseas and some will feel a deep sense of insecurity. We must respond by offering reassurance, by cherishing our wonderfully diverse society, and by affirming the unique contribution of each and every one.” Uncertainty can erode the consensus that we rely upon to hold communities and indeed, our national life together. This then begs the question: “What values and beliefs lie at the centre of our communities?”

2,500 years ago, in a land far, far away, or to be more precise in central Iraq, the people of Israel found themselves asking similar questions. They had been dispelled from their homeland by a ruthless, conquering superpower, the Babylonians. Everything that shaped their identity and purpose had been taken from them, namely their land, their king and their temple. They lived in an unfamiliar and threatening culture which caused them to long to return to the way things were in the past. Into this uncertainty God spoke through the prophecy of Isaiah to encourage people to look to Him for their personal renewal and their nation’s new beginnings. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 49.18 19) The murdered MP Jo Cox said: “While we celebrate our diversity, what surprises me time and time again as I travel around the constituency is that we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.” We often find our “centre” or consensus in things beyond politics. So it is good to seek out the things we have in common, the beliefs and values that spur us on to become better, more loving, forgiving and generous people. So what values and beliefs lie at the centre of your life and how can they become the focus for building kinder, more generous communities?

Firm replaces pony’s stolen eye mask

Rosemary Turner, Diane O'Neil, Judy Penny, Ruth Roberts, Barbara Godfrey and Wiola Hola serving up teas

Flushed with success after cream tea event! Cream teas served in the sunshine have raised £550 towards a community fundraising drive in Burnett, writes Ros Anstey. David and Rosemary Turner, of Whitson Lodge, hosted the event in their garden to help raise funds towards toilet facilities at St Michael’s Church. The St Michael’s Inaugural Loo Experience (SMILE) cream tea was well attended and Mrs Turner said: “We raised £550 towards building a toilet and

kitchenette for the church, which will enable the church, which is the only communal building in the village, to be used for a variety of events as well as the convenience for services. “The SMILE Totaliser shows that we are already half way towards our goal of £50,000 and hope to achieve this by next year with the help of further fundraising and grant applications. The weather was fine and sunny and it was a very enjoyable occasion,” she added.

A US firm has stepped in to help a rescued pony enjoy the fresh air once more after her special eye mask was stolen at HorseWorld. Welsh pony Beatty has an eye condition that means she must wear a mask to block UV rays from sunlight and to protect against flies, and without one she would eventually go blind. American firm Guardian Mask, which made her original device, heard about the theft after it was discovered on July 17 and immediately sent over a new mask for free. Donations from members of the public after the theft will be used to buy Beatty a second mask so she has a spare. HorseWorld groom Marcus Kearton thanked the company and everyone who made a donation and added: “When we found it had been stolen, we were so disappointed but the generosity of our supporters in response to this restores your faith in human-

Living Well with Andy Workman, practice director at The Beehive Natural Health Practice

Nothing good happens to me!

How often do we hear people use that tired old expression? “Nothing good happens to me”, it’s like a mantra we hear people repeat over and over again. The problem is that they actually start to believe it. Just for fun, I’d like to set you a challenge. I’d like you to listen out for those words: “Nothing good happens to me.” They may come in slightly different forms such as, “I am SO unlucky” or “That’s just my bad luck”. The challenge? When you hear someone say it, take a moment to assess their circumstances. In doing this myself I have indeed realised that some people are experiencing a hardship but MOST are not. Most of

the people I hear using this expression are in a steady relationship, have healthy children, enjoy rude health themselves, live in their own home, have at least one car on their driveway and take at least one foreign holiday each year. Unlucky? They don’t know they are born. Of course some get so deeply into the practice of feeling unlucky, that it becomes their “norm” and they can’t see a way out. The difficulty is that it’s not true. Your subconscious will always seek out evidence to prove your beliefs correct. If you wake up and think: “Today is going to be fantastic”, your focus will find every smile, good deed and lucky event to prove you right. If you wake up and think: “Here we go again” you can stand by for disaster as everything appears to go

wrong for the rest of the day. It’s nothing to do with attracting good or bad luck – the same things are likely to have happened anyway, good or bad, but your subconscious focus follows your thoughts and helps you to notice those things you predicted. Are you prone to the “Nothing good happens to me” approach? Want to try enjoying life a little more? Just count your blessings. If you struggle to do this, just start small. When you wake on a morning, be grateful that you had a bed in which to spend the night – many don’t. When you open the curtains and see the sun rising, be grateful that we do not see the sun as a threat. For many of the world’s peoples, the sun means drought and famine – we moan if it’s a bit too warm! If the rain is falling,

it is keeping our green and pleasant land just as we like it. Only got cornflakes for breakfast again? Be thankful that you’re not restricted to rice for every meal or that you can walk into a supermarket. You get the picture. In this material world of ours, it is so easy to feel hard done by. Blessings do not come in the form of iPhones and plasma tellies. They are the everyday things that we fail to recognise in our endless pursuit of the trinkets we don’t need. Don’t get me wrong. I am not a luddite who hates the modern world, but sometimes it is beneficial to stop and count what you have rather than what you lack. What will you be grateful for? Maybe your ability to read this and the teachers who taught you to do so is as good a reason to feel blessed as any?

Centre offers Finding Dory swim sessions

In Good Health with Sam Wright, at Is your smartphone causing your neck or back pain?

Humans were designed to stand upright. And yet in this modern world too many of us spend our days with our heads slumped over for a simple reason: we’re staring at the tiny screen of a smartphone. The average person spends two to four hours each day with their neck bent at this unnatural angle while sending emails or texts. That’s 700 to 1,400 hours per year. The success of social media has led to an unfortunate epidemic of poor posture – especially in the neck and mid back. This neck and back pain is being driven by the forces added to the spine when the neck is held in a forward position. Studies have found that bending

on your cervical spine (the portion of the spine above the shoulders) – that’s more than the weight of the average sevenyear-old. This forward head carriage can lead many to suffer with increased pain, wear, tear and degeneration within the spine.

your head at a 60 degree angle to get a better look at your “selfie” is putting 60 pounds worth of pressure

55

Good posture So, next time you are using your phone, try and remember these simple steps to help maintain good posture: l Keep your ears aligned with your shoulders l Pull your shoulder blades back and down l Lift your smartphone so it’s just below your chin If you are suffering from neck, or any other joint pain, please feel free to book an appointment to see one of our experienced therapists.

Youngsters are being invited to take inspiration from Disney’s eagerly anticipated Finding Dory film to improve their swimming skills. Season is about to get busy for bowlers With four months’ bowling under our belt, Keynsham Bowling Club is now in the busiest part of the season with the green receiving a great amount of use, writes our correspondent. We appreciate the high standard to which it is maintained by our green keeper. Our ladies compete in the midweek North Somerset League and at present are in third position. Our gentlemen compete in the Bristol & District Thursday League, the A team being in ninth position in League 1, while the B Team are at the top of League 4, with five fixtures remaining. On Saturdays the men field three teams in the Somerset League, the A team being eighth in Premier 2, the B team fifth in East 1 and the C team third in East 2, also with five fixtures remaining. A number of cup games have also been played, together with friendly fixtures involving ladies,

gents and mixed sides. Members are also playing within the club in a series of club competitions, which conclude in a finals day at the end of the season. The club was recently invited to join the Keynsham & Saltford Torch Relay and our picture,

above, shows the six runners – or in some cases walkers! – who took part. To illustrate what a family sport bowls is, the ages of our team spanned more than 70 years. August and September promise to be very busy months in Keynsham Park.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field Preparations are well under way for the start of Keynsham Town’s 2016/17 campaign. The Ks’ management team of Chris King, Sean Day and Russell Holt are hopeful of pushing on from last season’s vastly improved performance, in which they amassed 66 points and were within 10 points of the Toolstation Western League Division One champions. Their league position has earned them a place in the 2016/17 FA Cup for the first time in six years. The road to Wembley begins with a toughlooking visit to Wessex Premier Division side Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Saturday, August 6. The Ks’ opening league match of the new season is on Tuesday,

keynshamvoice

August 9, with Almondsbury UWE the visitors to the AJN Stadium, followed by another home game on Saturday, August 13, against league newcomers Bishops Lydeard. The club play their home games at the AJN Stadium, at Crown Fields next to Keynsham Rugby Club. With the assistance of the club’s facility management company, Brea Avalon LLP, the stadium includes both standing and seating areas, a fine clubhouse and a state-of-the-art 3G artificial pitch. This provides an excellent surface for football and also means that games can still be played in inclement weather conditions where the majority of grass pitches would be unplayable. Off the pitch, the club has renewed sponsorship deals with KitCo, Smart Computers and The Old Bank to purchase the First Team’s new kits next season. They will also be welcoming a new sponsor for the Reserve Team to the club, CM Drylining, who again are buying a brand new kit. Finally, a deal which will bring in much-needed funds to the club has been signed with

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

another local company, Dribuild. One of the company directors is Dave Kipling, whose son Sam has come through the junior ranks and is now an important member of the First Team squad. In a similar way to their deals with Bristol City and Rovers, part of the deal will see the stand at the AJN Stadium named The Dribuild Stand and eagle-eyed readers may have already noticed the advertising boards on the canopy above the stand. Club secretary Julian French said: “We are also giving our fans the opportunity to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and get some great benefits through a seasonlong sponsorship for a one-off payment of only £25. “This sponsorship runs throughout the 2016/17 season, and includes your name and/or business name located alongside the player profile within our match day programme, confirmation of your sponsorship on the official club website http://keynshamtownfc.net and the chance to attend our Sponsors’ Evening at the end of the season. “We also have several other sponsorship packages available throughout the season.” If you are interested, contact Julian French at jules1233@live. com or on 07814 609853. The Ks’ first home league games are as follows: l Tuesday, August 9 Almondsbury UWE 7.45pm kick-off

l Saturday, August 13 Bishops Lydeard 3pm kick-off l Saturday, August 20 Corsham Town 3pm kick off l Saturday, August 27 Chard Town 3pm kick off l Saturday, September 3 Devizes Town 3pm kick off Vice chairman Adrian Cole has urged Keynsham locals to come and cheer on their local team. After attendances which showed a 60 per cent increase last season, he said: “Admission costs just £6 for adults and £3 for concessions, including a free match programme. “There is a fully licensed bar in the clubhouse, as well as a wide range of food and refreshments available from our tea hut. “You will be assured of a warm welcome and hopefully will see enough to make you want to return.” The club has also announced the 500 Club winners for June: first prize (£40) – Elizabeth Manning; second prize (£20) – Rob Sheriton; third prize (£10) – Andrew Smith. Keep an eye out for an update on how the season has started in the September issue of Keynshamvoice!
