Pride in Grenfell appeal response

People living on the Wellsway say vehicles go too fast and even mount the pavement A group of Keynsham neighbours are demanding that council officials come and meet them after they say years of complaints about speeding, collisions and near-misses for pedestrians have fallen on deaf ears. People living on Wellsway at its junction with Bath Hill say they feel their lives are at risk every time they step out of their gates onto the narrow pavement at the start of the busy road. Mum-of-three Gemma Mitchell said she and many other residents have been clipped by wing mirrors on passing

vehicles, while last year one car collided with neighbour Laura Chesterfield’s wall as the driver lost control on the corner and another knocked over a telegraph pole, bringing the wires down across the road. Vehicles including buses and lorries also mount the pavement to squeeze past oncoming cars, she said, with a large truck narrowly missing her pushchair as she stepped out of her gate in one incident. She said: “We have been raising these issues since we moved here in 2005 but were

told there hadn’t been any fatalities and nothing was done. Cars mount the pavement instead of waiting for traffic on the other side to pass and we have to double check before coming out of our gates for the fear of getting hit by a car on the pavement. Many of us have been knocked on the arms and legs by passing cars and vans. “There are many young families living here and we can’t let our children step out onto the pavement by themselves despite this being a main route to Turn to Page 2

‘Clipped by cars as we walk on path’ From Page 1 Chandag and Wellsway schools. Emails and phone calls don’t seem to work and we all want to know what action will be taken to prevent a death.” Keynsham East councillor Bryan Organ told Keynshamvoice he is currently organising a visit to Keynsham by new Cabinet member for transport and highways Councillor Mark Shelford so he can see some of the problems on the town’s roads for himself – and Wellsway will be included. He said: “At the development committee meeting on July 26 I asked Mark Shelford to come to Keynsham and look at the issues. I have been to see people living at this entrance to the Wellsway, as well as residents further up who have a nightmare getting onto the main road, and am very aware of the concerns. In several places along the Wellsway there is something not right at the moment.” The entrance to Wellsway from Bath Hill is included in the 20mph zone rolled out across Keynsham in 2013. But residents say they are baffled as to why there is no sign placed at the junction and only a small repeater sign several metres further up the road. A temporary illuminated sign was placed near the junction in April but only for a week, residents said. Gemma’s husband Chris said: “Permanent 20mph signs

should be put at the start of the Wellsway or painted on the road as I think some people think it’s a 30mph or 40mph road. But perhaps the most effective thing would be a traffic island. A car was parked on one side of the road near where it narrows for a couple of days and it forced every car to slow down so maybe a solid structure should be installed. “The 45-degree angle on the junction at the roundabout also allows cars to come round the corner too fast – if it was squared off in some way they would have to slow down.” Keynsham beat manager Pc James Evans said the road is visited by the Safety Camera Partnership but the road layout meant officers had to sit further up the Wellsway. There had been reports of speeding and complaints about vehicles contravening the 7.5-ton weight limit, he said, and operations to combat this were planned in and around the town with an evidential speed gun that would allow offenders to be prosecuted. A spokesman for Bath and North East Somerset Council said: “The council takes traffic safety very seriously and the Highways Team will make sure that the necessary inspections are carried out to ensure that all the relevant signage is in place. Highways issues can be reported via Council Connect at Council_ Connect@bathnes.gov.uk or on 01225 394041.”

A change of scene for Sportscene’s Keri

After 22 years of kitting out local youngsters with their new school uniforms, Keynsham’s Sportscene closed its doors on July 15 – but not without a celebration. Owner Keri Loughran’s family organised a surprise party for her as she shut up shop for the last time, inviting friends, fellow traders and customers to join them in raising a toast to the Temple Street store. Keri first opened Sportscene in Temple Court before moving into larger premises on Temple Street a couple of years later. She said: “Running the business has been brilliant, I’ve had such good fun, had fantastic staff, met lovely people and made good friends. “One of the best things is seeing children who have come in for their uniforms come back years later with their own children. My own family have all worked here over the years, too. “The last day was chaotic as

Keri Loughran’s family organised a surprise party as she shut up shop at Sportscene for the last time we had the surprise party going on, my husband Graham was pulling the place apart as we had to restore it to its original condition and staff were still serving customers coming in to buy things – but it was great!” While she won’t be running the shop, mum-of-four Keri won’t be short of things to do as she will be looking after her parents and has seven grandchildren

under the age of seven. She is also hoping to spend a lot more time perfecting a hobby – golf! “I have been learning for years and now I would like to do a bit more – I love it as it’s such a great way to unwind,” she said. Keri said she had received some lovely letters from local schools to wish her well and added: “It’s ended on a good note and I will really miss the shop as

it’s been such a big part of our lives but it’s the right time. “I want to say a huge thank you to my lovely staff Grace and Molly, who have been fantastic – I will miss them the most and I will definitely go on to spend time with them. “I also want to thank my family for all their support over the years and it was great for them all to be at the party.”

Couple proud of response to their Grenfell appeal

Simon Pomphrey and his wife Adora visited Notting Hill Methodist Church to deliver the collection of toiletries

A Keynsham couple have driven a car filled with toiletries to London to help those affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster. Simon Pomphrey and his wife Adora appealed to fellow churchgoers at St Augustine’s Catholic Church in Downend to help them put together a collection of essentials for those forced to flee their homes following the deadly blaze on June 14. After the couple were told women’s toiletries were among the goods in shortest supply, the church community donated a car-load of items, including soaps, shower gels and sanitary products. Simon and Adora then drove the donated goods to London, dropping off the collection at

Notting Hill Methodist Church, in the shadow of the tower, where they met the vicar and parishioners. Simon said: “I’d like to thank everyone who donated. I’m so proud to be part of a community who time after time come through for people who need it the most.” People from Grenfell Tower will be able to choose whatever products they need from the selection, with the remainder to be sold by the church in aid of a fund set up for the residents. Simon has since held a second collection, this time gathering second-hand toys, games and sports equipment to help provide activities for affected youngsters over the summer holidays.

Former fire station site to be turned into new homes and shops following sale Shops and new homes will replace Keynsham’s former fire station, after it sold for more than double its guide price. Chewton Place Developments made the winning bid for the Temple Street site, purchasing it for £750,000 following “unprecedented levels of interest”, according to agent Alder King. Keynsham Town Council was among the unsuccessful bidders, having hoped to turn the site into a community centre following calls from residents, whose suggestions included a space for events and markets, meeting rooms and a heritage centre or museum. Chewton Place Developments plans to create a mixed-use scheme, with retail units at ground level and residential properties above.

Keynsham’s former fire station in Temple Street sold for £750,000 Potential buyers were invited to make bids for the former fire station site in excess

of £325,000. Emma Smith, associate at Alder King, said: “This town centre site has

enormous potential, a fact widely recognised by the many and varied parties who expressed interest and then went on to submit bids in the hope of acquiring it. “It is also worth noting that the majority of bids were unconditional. “As a direct consequence of the competitive interest, we were able to secure a price for Avon Fire & Rescue 130 per cent above the guide price. “This is as clear a sign as ever of the strength of Bristol’s development and occupational markets and the shortage of freehold stock in the market.” Keynsham Fire Station has been closed since November 2015, with the crews now based at a new fire station at Hicks Gate.

Is ‘kennel cough’ only a risk in kennels?

T

he name “kennel cough” can be misleading, as it is not a disease that is only caught in kennels. It can be caught through direct contact with affected dogs or by sharing contaminated objects such as toys or food/drink bowls etc. So if your dog is mixing at all with other dogs – in the park, at friends’ houses or with dog-sitters – we would highly recommend the kennel cough vaccination. We usually recommend all dogs have it with the annual booster. Kennel cough (also known as infectious canine tracheobronchitis or bordetellosis) is a nasty and highly contagious disease that causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchus in dogs. It is a widespread disease which is caused by several different viruses and bacteria. Due to its contagious nature, it can spread very quickly among dogs that are kept within close proximity to each other. Most boarding kennels will not accept dogs that aren’t vaccinated against kennel cough. Symptoms of kennel cough can include a dry hacking cough

sounding like a goose honk and often as though there is something stuck in the dog’s throat, retching and watery nasal discharge. All dogs can develop kennel cough. However, certain dogs will be more at risk such as young puppies, older dogs, pregnant bitches, dogs with low immunity or existing respiratory disease. If you suspect that your dog may be suffering from kennel cough, book an appointment to see a vet as there are many possible causes for coughing and treatment can vary. Your dog will also need to be isolated from other dogs so as not to spread the disease. Kennel cough can be prevented by a vaccination, which is given via the nose. Although it does not guarantee that your dog will not contract kennel cough, it may reduce the risk of contracting the infection, and also reduce the severity of the disease if the dog does become infected. Making the world a friendlier place for people living with dementia The complex search for a cure for dementia is in the hands of medical experts – but we all have the power to make life easier for the hundreds of people thought to be living with the condition in the Keynsham and Saltford area. Championing the issues facing those with dementia is one of the main aims of a group launched in Keynsham last year, with members hoping that by shedding light on how the world appears to someone with the condition the town can become a dementia-friendly community with just a few small changes. Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) chair Alan Hale, whose stepmother-in-law developed the condition, said business owners, shop staff and many others could all make a big difference to the experience of those with dementia by looking at the town through their eyes. He said: “There are many little things that can be a huge obstacle to someone with dementia. “It’s things like encouraging shops not to change displays around frequently, not to have a black carpet on a doorstep, which to someone with dementia looks like a hole in the floor, or encouraging businesses to use simple signage for toilets, perhaps with an image showing a toilet basin. Just the simple act of catching sight of yourself in a mirror when in your mind you are 30 but the reflection is someone in their 80s can be confusing. “Just making more people aware of the challenges that people living with dementia face is a positive step for those who live in our community.” Bath and North East Somerset figures estimate there were around 2,600 people with dementia in the area in 2015, with only 58 per cent of those diagnosed. By 2030, the authority expects there will be

more than 1,300 additional people diagnosed with dementia across the area. To support those affected by the condition, the Keynsham DAA has launched monthly Music for the Mind sessions, which stimulate the brain through singing and movement as well as providing muchneeded social interaction for those with dementia and carers. Mr Hale said one of the group’s main ambitions was to secure sponsors so that more sessions – which cost around £80 each – can be held to help more people. He said: “We want people diagnosed with dementia and their carers to come and enjoy our tea and coffee and cakes and biscuits and talk with each other and our volunteers. After the refreshments we have gentle seated exercises before the singing. It really is a positive event and free, though a donation is always welcome but not compulsory.” Music for the Mind sessions with an experienced singing leader are held every second Thursday of the month at St Dunstan’s Church Hall. Keynsham DDA also offers free talks to groups and organisations on becoming Dementia Friends. The talks are delivered by their trained Dementia Champions. She said: “I have chosen to support the Alzheimer’s Society because it affects so many people and research is needed. My dad also suffered at the end of his life, thankfully not for too long. “I am so excited. I’ve never had a problem with heights and, as I will be strapped in, I’m sure I’ll be fine. Save the date for tree festival’s return People in Keynsham are being invited to “save the date” for the return of the Keynsham Christmas Tree Festival this December. The popular event will be held at St John’s Church from Friday, December 8, to Sunday, December 10, when dozens of trees decorated by local groups will be displayed in the aisles. From September organisers will once again be inviting groups, clubs, schools and other organisations to sponsor and decorate a tree, which will cost £25. For more details, contact Ruth Hutchings on 0117 986 2088. The church will open its doors to visitors throughout the weekend, and will offer refreshments and live entertainment. The last festival, in 2015, was visited by more than 2,000 people and raised around £2,700 for church funds.

Members of the Keynsham in Bloom team with artist Faye Joines and representatives from GWR, Severnside Community Rail Partnership, B&NES Community Challenge and Hochtief, who have helped create a garden and install artwork by Time Out at Keynsham Station

Artwork brings extra colour to station’s wildlife garden New artwork created by young people is the finishing touch to a project designed to brighten up Keynsham Station for commuters – and to make it more appealing to wildlife. Colourful giant insects and flowers created by members of Time Out with the help of artists from Priormade now adorn disused advertising posts at the entrance to the station. The installations form part of a new community garden created on two unloved, grey patches of land, which have now been transformed as part of the RHS Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife initiative. The young people helped Keynsham in Bloom members and volunteers from B&NES Council, Great Western Railway and construction firm Hochtief to complete the garden just in time for the South West in Bloom judges’ visit on July 14. The project was one of a select number across the country to receive £500 worth of gardening materials, along with hands-on support and advice from RHS. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James said the group had been planning the new pollinator-friendly garden since the start of the year when the land was being dug up as part

of electrification works at the station. She said: “We are thrilled that the RHS have chosen our station project as part of their 2017 Greening Grey Britain campaign. There are only a handful of projects across the country that have been chosen by the RHS to receive funding. In order for us to be selected by the RHS we had to demonstrate that our project will bring people together to work in partnership and benefit both communities and wildlife in the area, as well as demonstrating how we would involve working with young people and how it would benefit the young people taking part.” She added: “The site team from Hochtief have been invaluable – without their support with transportation and helping to install the artworks,

we wouldn’t have completed the project in time for our Keynsham in Bloom judging day. When Rebecca Prior, the artist, delivered the artworks to the station, I have to say I was blown away when she unveiled them. They are absolutely stunning and have so much detail, the youngsters from Time Out Youth Club should be very proud of what they have achieved.” The artwork was funded by ACORP New Life for Local Lines. The Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife initiative aims to highlight the vital role gardens play in supporting wildlife, helping to provide valuable habitats for creatures to forage, nest and hide and form a “wildlife corridor” to link up other green spaces. l See the latest news from Keynsham in Bloom on Page 42

Celebrations despite the sore feet after family complete 62-mile walk for Jack A Saltford family have completed an arduous 62-mile walk, raising thousands of pounds in memory of 17-year-old Jack Boulton. Jack’s parents Dave and June, sister Lucy, aunt Liz Parr and family friend Nigel Kay crossed the finish line of the Cotswold Way Challenge after 32 hours on their feet. Setting off from Bath at 6.40am on July 1, the CRYwalking Team arrived in Cheltenham at 2.45pm the following day, having walked throughout the night. The group were raising money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a charity the Boulton family has supported in memory of Jack following the young sportsman’s sudden death in 2009. Generous supporters have pledged just under £9,000 so far.

The CRYwalking team at the finish line, left, raising money in memory of Jack Boulton, above Dave said: “We’re all relieved, pleased and have pretty sore feet. For Jack’s memory, for CRY and for ourselves, a great

Protect your home by thinking like a burglar – research Thinking like a burglar could help keep our homes more secure, say researchers who have been working with offenders in Bristol to get an insight into their behaviour. Avon and Somerset Police have released details of the study by the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology at the University of Portsmouth as they launched a campaign called Be HomeSafe at the start of the summer holiday period. The campaign aims to remind householders to hide valuables, shut windows and lock doors to avoid making it easy for burglars. The Keynsham area has suffered a spike in “creeperstyle” burglaries in recent weeks,

says the local policing team, with offenders taking advantage of open windows in warmer weather and poor security at the rear of properties. Speaking to 33 convicted burglars at HMP Bristol, the University of Portsmouth researchers found they would commonly use a rear, more secluded route to get into a home and spent most time in bedrooms where they expected to find smaller, more lucrative items. They would also target small electrical items, such as video cameras, digital cameras, tablets and iPhones, and small high-value items like wallets and briefcases. Dr Claire Nee, who led the

This summer, Avon and Somerset Police suggest these simple steps to protect your home: Hide l Don’t store jewellery, money, sentimental items and things you’ve saved up for in bedroom drawers l Lock away tablets, mobile phones, wallets and cards Shut l Close front windows when you’re in the garden or not in the room l Close all windows when you leave the house research, said: “Our research can actually teach householders to think a little more like burglars so that they can reduce the opportunity for burglaries. Burglars really don’t want to meet you, so over the summer ‘fake occupancy’ if you can. For example, ask a trusted neighbour to pop in and turn your lights on at night. In our research over 50 per cent of burglars got in through an open door or window

Lock l Install a five-point mortice lock on your doors l Ensure you have locks on all windows Before holiday l Use automatic timer switches for lights l Don’t leave bins and recycling boxes outside l Ask trusted neighbours to keep a look out, turn lights on at night and park on your driveway l Avoid discussing holiday plans on public social media so make sure you shut and lock doors at all times.” Detective Superintendent Carolyn Belafonte said: “We know that often people don’t secure their homes because of the misplaced belief that ‘it won’t happen to me’. But this message straight from the mouths of burglars gives clear advice about the simple steps we all need to take to protect our homes over the summer.”

‘Friends forever’ – towns celebrate link forged 40 years ago and look to future Keynsham strengthened its links with Libourne in France last month as it hosted a celebration to mark 40 years of twinning between the towns. Libourne’s mayor Philippe Buisson and members of the town’s twinning association were among a large group that enjoyed several days in Keynsham, where they were hosted by twinning members and local families. On July 1, Mayor Buisson was joined by Bath and North East Somerset Council chair Cherry Beath to unveil a plaque in the library’s newly named Libourne Lounge on the first floor. n NEWS Band gives foodbank an unexpected gift A Los Angeles-based band has made a second donation to Keynsham Foodbank, after headlining the town’s music festival last month. Following the performance, Brad Mitchell, the lead singer of Bread Over Bombs, met up with foodbank volunteer Sue Elson at Keynsham record store Longwell Records to hand over a cheque for £300. The band supports foodbanks in the US through album sales and struck up a transatlantic friendship with Iain Aitchison, the owner of Longwell Records in Temple Street, after he began stocking their albums. On a previous visit to the UK, Brad presented Keynsham Foodbank with £1,500 and the charity’s co-ordinator Alan Hale said the second donation was unexpected. He said: “We were overjoyed with the first donation from Bread over Bombs but this was a great and pleasant surprise for us and will be put to good use in our

Five long-serving after 144 years at The end of term marked the end of an era for five long-serving teachers at Wellsway School. Dave Sage, Kath Cox, Patricia Baker, Lou Riddoch and Hazel Price all left the Keynsham secondary at the start of the summer holidays after racking up 144 years’ service at Wellsway between them. Although he has officially retired after 34 years at the school, pupils haven’t seen the last of science teacher Mr Sage as he will be returning in September on maternity cover and to run the Duke of Edinburgh Award. He said highlights during his time at the school included taking students on Wellsway Challenge expeditions to destinations such as Ecuador, Canada and South Africa and meeting former students who

have gone on to have successful careers in science. “You never know when something you say will inspire a student to follow a certain path,” he said. Mrs Baker joined Wellsway in 1988 as deputy head, a role she held for 26 years until she moved to work for the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust in 2014. “I think people stay because of the strength of friendships, the support between staff when things get tough, their everpresent commitment and their ongoing desire to do the best for the Wellsway students,” she said. Kath Cox, who has taught maths and been a head of house during her 30 years at Wellsway, said it was often the many extracurricular activities that stuck in the mind as highlights.

Hazel Price arrived at Wellsway in 1993 to teach French and German, and also recalls some memorable school outings – particularly one where staff and students were struck by a sickness bug. She said: “On the plus side, we ended up having to be flown home rather than enduring a 26hour coach journey!” Head of PE Louise Riddoch said her highlight during her 27 years was celebrating the London

2012 Olympics at the school, with students visiting the Games, welcoming athletes and then Education Secretary Michael Gove. Mrs Riddoch is taking up a lecturing post on the PGCE PE course at Bath Spa University. Wellsway School principal Matthew Woodville said: “We are incredibly fortunate at Wellsway in having a staff team with an enormous wealth of experience, skills, knowledge and expertise. “The staff leaving us this summer have given decades of dedicated service to the young people of Keynsham. Many families in the area owe them a debt of gratitude and will want to join me in wishing these teachers every happiness in future.”

Lemn Sissay

August, 2017

Acclaimed poet to perform one-man play at The Space

Photo: Hamish Brown

A celebrated performance poet has chosen Keynsham as one of just 15 locations where he’ll stage his one-man play this autumn. Lemn Sissay MBE will explore his upbringing in children’s homes and foster care in a dramatic reading of Something Dark, which comes to The Space on September 22. The author and broadcaster also shares details of the search for his family and his true identity in the play, which has been performed around the world to great acclaim. Organisers said they were

delighted when they contacted Lemn and he agreed to add Keynsham to his short run of performances, adding: “He is currently performing as an actor in Jim Cartwright’s play Road at The Royal Court Theatre until September 8 and is always very busy so it is super to have him visit Keynsham.” The reading will be followed by a question and answer session with Lemn, who beat Peter Mandelson to be named chancellor of the University of Manchester in 2015 and was official poet of the London 2012 Olympics. He is associate artist at the Southbank Centre, patron of the Letterbox Club and the Reader Organisation, ambassador for the Children’s Reading Fund and a fellow of the Foundling Museum.

His poetry has also appeared on dance act Leftfield’s acclaimed 1995 album Leftism as well as outside train stations, in a children’s hospital, a bus station, as part of art installations and at the Royal Festival Hall, which are just a few examples of his Landmark Poems to be found around the country. He has also been the subject of TV documentary Internal Flight and radio documentary Child of the State, as well as appearing on Radio 4’s everpopular Desert Island Discs in 2015. Tickets for Something Dark, on September 22, 7.15pm for 7.45pm start, are £14 and are available at https:// keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk/lemnsissaysomething dark

I

don’t want to scare anyone but we are suffering with a number of creeper-style burglaries at the moment. Offenders are accessing houses that have little or no security to prevent access to the sides and the rear of the property. They are then forcing windows that have been left open to gain access. Once inside they are looking for jewellery and small removable items and generally letting themselves out of the back door. I know that with the hot weather we are all guilty of leaving windows open, but be aware any window on the ground level left open leaves you vulnerable. Also think about windows above low flat or pitched roofs. If anyone wants some crime prevention advice about their property then

please make contact and one of the neighbourhood team will happily attend and offer security suggestions. This month the neighbourhood team actioned a successful Mis-Use of Drugs Act Warrant in Keynsham. During the search we recovered a large amount of drugs and associated paraphernalia. Some of the drugs believed to be class A have been sent for testing and the offender will be charged with various offences at the conclusion of this investigation. With the nicer weather comes light evenings, which seems in Keynsham at least to encourage people to hang around in vehicles in our council car parks. Unfortunately an amount of these people see fit to cause antisocial behaviour with their vehicles. We have had a number of complaints

of excessively loud music, and offences of dangerous and reckless driving. We are now taking action against these persons. Only this evening I located two motorbike riders skidding and wheeling around the Temple Street car park close to where a father was getting his young daughter into his car. Both riders have now been issued with section 59 warnings which, should they do this again, will empower the police to seize their vehicles. I hope this can serve as a warning – we will also be looking to deal with any of these vehicles that are not insured correctly. Any modifications you have should be declared to your insurance company – without doing this it is invalid! We will be contacting the insurance companies and getting insurance cancelled for these offenders.

With the children now off school, antisocial behaviour has already started to increase. We are looking to patrol our parks and open spaces to prevent this behaviour. Please pass on information to us if you are unhappy with this sort of behaviour so that we can target the right areas. We already have an extensive patrol plan but will increase it to prevent offences occurring. And lastly with a bit of good news, we are currently looking for a new police constable to join the beat team for the Keynsham area. Due to a long-standing vacancy and spare hours from part-time workers, we have finally managed to secure the position. It is advertised internally at present so hopefully I will soon be able to bring news of our new colleague. This will assist us with the proactive work that we want to carry out around speeding, and enforcing the various width and weight limits on our roads that we receive so many complaints about.

Teaming up to ensure the show goes on! Working together saved the day for a group of Year 6 pupils in Keynsham who faced having to call off their leavers’ service when a water main burst and forced their school to close. Youngsters at St John’s C of E Primary had a farewell performance prepared for parents, carers and friends but, with fellow Wellsway Multi Academy Trust members IKB Academy and Wellsway School also shut because of the lack of water, they had nowhere to stage it. Disappointment turned to delight, however, when staff at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy – another trust school – offered to host the end-of-term celebration. All 31 of the pupils, along with their props, were transported the three miles to SBL thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers so the show could go on. St John’s headteacher Matthew Cottrell said he was very grateful to all who had helped to ensure that the service went ahead and was a great success. Wellsway MAT chief executive Andrea Arlidge added: “We are stronger as a family of schools than as individuals. It was wonderful to see how everyone supported one another to make sure these families did not miss out on such an important moment in their lives.” Parent Rachel John said: “It is so typical of the staff at St John’s to go the extra mile and put the children first. We never expected

St John’s CofE pupils perform their leavers’ service at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy the school to be able to make such fantastic arrangements for Year 6. “Every detail was covered and being minibused over added to the fun. It felt extra special to be staged in the great facilities at SBL and the children loved the fact that all their staff were there to support them. “Younger siblings, parents and grandparents, governors and staff who came to watch were all so proud of Year 6 and it was a beautiful end to their time at school.”

Students from IKB Academy at Holburne Park in Bath

Academy builds on new link with firm

A visit to see a luxury housing development taking shape in Bath has helped strengthen the link between a Keynsham school and a local engineering company. Students from IKB Academy were invited to Holburne Park in Lansdown by engineering consultancy Campbell Reith to celebrate the launch of their new partnership under the construction industry’s Adopt a School scheme As part of an “immersion day” employees from the international firm spent time in the classroom and students visited their HQ in Pixash Lane and toured the Bath construction site. Student Riana Cano said: “There were so many interesting things to see on site and I really enjoyed looking at the different aspects of construction.” Saule Bausyte added: “It was great to see the houses that were almost finished and try to imagine how they’ll look when all the furnishings are in as I’d like to be an interior designer” IKB Academy opened two years ago and gives students aged 14 to 19 the chance to study for GCSEs and A levels

while undertaking regular work experience in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fields. Debbie Gibbs, principal of IKB Academy, said: “It is really important for us to collaborate with local employers in the STEM sector. The Adopt a School programme is a great way to make those links for the benefit of the students and the businesses that are involved. “Partnering an engineering consultancy covers so many areas of science, technology, engineering and maths and these subjects are at the heart of what we offer students here at IKB.” Jamie Siggers, from Campbell Reith, said: “We are very pleased to formalise this relationship with IKB Academy through Constructing Excellence South West’s Adopt a School initiative. “We have held a relationship with IKB as our local academy since their inception, but this new relationship provides more scope to support the curriculum and to encourage students into our diverse and rewarding industry.”

All goes swimmingly as youngsters take little eels from tank to riverbank

Children who spent weeks nurturing young eels in their classrooms have released the little creatures into the wild. Members of St Keyna Primary School’s Green Team have been taking part in the Spawn to be Wild initiative, caring for some elvers over five weeks. As they grew, the Year 3 and 4 pupils learned about the life of eels, the challenges they face in Britain’s rivers and how they can help protect them in the wild. The project finished with a day trip for the children to take the eels to Blagdon Lake to release them with the help of Matt and Sara from Avon Wildlife Trust. Spawn to be Wild is a collaborative project between Avon Wildlife Trust, the Sustainable Eel Group and funded by Bristol Water. St Keyna’s Green Team is also celebrating receiving a grant from Keynsham Town Council for equipment to further their appreciation, study and care of the local natural environment. The containers for our bikes were made from the old floor planks that readers heard about over the last year as the Scout HQ floor was replaced. So our display was aptly named the “ReCycle Centre” for the South West in Bloom judges’ visit. The bikes brought a smile, so let’s hope it was a golden one come the South West results in September.

n YOUTH & EDUCATION A local school has received an award for reducing the number of journeys made to and from its grounds by car. Saltford C of E Primary is the first school in Bath and North East Somerset to receive a silver award as part of the national Modeshift STARS scheme, which aims to increase “active” travel and improve the health and wellbeing of children. The primary school has introduced a number of measures to encourage cycling and walking, including free Active Travel Breakfasts for those who walk, cycle or scoot to school, poster competitions and has created Active Ambassadors to represent pupils and come up with ideas to improve travel to school. Year 5 and 6 pupils have been given bikeability training while new bike racks and scooter pods have also been installed. Melissa Brook has been leading work on the school’s travel plan, with help from B&NES Council’s school travel plan officer Hannah Brittain. Melissa said: “Working with the council’s school travel plan

Melissa Brook with Saltford Primary School Active Ambassadors Bernice, Zoe, Stanley, Elliot, Isabella, Isaac and Isabella officer has been a huge support to me and has helped us to implement lots of new initiatives at our school and record the evidence for these activities on the Modeshift STARS website.

This has enabled us to achieve a silver award this year, for which we are truly thankful. “To be the first school in B&NES to achieve this silver award made the recognition

even more special. We are now planning to go for gold! Indeed, work is already under way!” Hannah Brittain presented the award to Saltford Primary School and said: “I have been so impressed by everyone’s enthusiasm and hard work over the last couple of years to get active travel on the agenda at the school. “In particular, I’d like to thank the Active Ambassadors for their ideas and for helping out at events such as the Active Travel Breakfast. Big thanks also go to Mrs Brook for developing a fantastic School Travel Plan and co-ordinating ongoing initiatives and events to encourage walking and cycling to school. Her passion and enthusiasm are a credit to the school.” Fifteen B&NES schools are currently working towards Modeshift STARS accreditation.

Many happy memories as school turns 10

The new St Keyna Standard, left, raised to celebrate the school’s 10th birthday; flowers for headteacher Adrienne Hughes, right

A Keynsham primary ended the year with a birthday celebration, marking 10 years since the school opened its doors. St Keyna Nursery and Primary held a special assembly to share memories and launch a new St Keyna Standard flag. There was also a giant birthday cake cut by Jasmine and Harvey, who both turned 10 in the same week. Headteacher Adrienne Hughes, who has led the school from the beginning, said: “Over the years the school has evolved

into a centre of excellence for inclusion and equality work and we are very proud to be only the second school in the country to be awarded the Stonewall Gold Award. Our birthday party was a smashing celebration of our amazing school and culminated in us running the new St Keyna standard up the flag pole.” St Keyna opened in 2007 to cater for youngsters from Temple and Keynsham primaries after the ageing school buildings were closed.

LETTER FROM YOUR MP

Jacob Rees-Mogg

O

ne of the challenges for all societies is helping children and young adults through their adolescence. Locally, an organisation exists to do exactly that, it is called Off the Record. Off the Record has an office in Bath, which I visited last week, as well as working throughout North East Somerset. Its vision is for “every young person in Bath and North East Somerset and beyond to be emotionally healthy, confident and empowered and to be themselves” and it achieves this in three ways. It offers listening support where students can discuss anything in a series of 20-minute sessions. The listeners do not seek to judge; if it is important to the child it is

keynshamvoice

worth hearing about. It also has professional counsellors who can help young people who may have more serious issues and need assistance in coping with their lives. Additionally, it offers workshops for up to eight people who can help each other but it is about listening, not directing or advising. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, the areas that are most commonly reported are family-related, especially the breakdown of relationships, anxiety, depression and anger. The service is confidential and can be a gateway to further facilities but it also offers advocacy for children and support to the Youth Parliament. It is a local charity run by deeply committed people who managed to see 1,157 children in 2016 in 1,157 sessions. It can be visited in its Bath offices and has sessions in the Midsomer Norton Town Hall with most callers having heard about it through word of mouth. Anyone who wants to get in touch can call 01225 312481; it is so important young people know that a sympathetic, non-judgemental ear is available.

LETTERS Weekly shop on a bike is not practical

In reply to the very helpful suggestion by Mr J Edwards given in Issue 64 (“Walk or cycle and beat town’s traffic”), I would like to offer the following reply. I was born in Brislington in 1948 and in our road, Savoy Road, there were probably no more than eight cars in a street that had around 100 private houses. I remember our local grocery shop, Slucutt’s in Bloomfield Road, where they did indeed offer to deliver your weekly shop by purpose-made bikes, ridden by teenagers. However, in the Fifties few households had fridges and only very small, if any, freezers and therefore the weekly shop was much smaller and fruit, vegetables and meats were purchased several times a week for those that could afford them. Today’s weekly shop is considerably bigger and it is

totally impractical to shop by bicycle for anything other than a few items, otherwise it would probably require some type of trailer to be towed behind the bicycle! I remember a veterinary surgeon friend of mine who applied for planning permission to extend his surgery on the outskirts of Birmingham, which was located on a dual carriageway in a derestricted speed zone. He spent 10 months trying to convince the local planning department that their request for him to provide a cycle shed for visiting clients was impractical and not necessary. His response was that in 40 years he had never had a client visit him with their pet, usually cat or dog, on a bicycle. I agreed with him having spent more than 30 years visiting numerous veterinary practices across the whole of the UK and Ireland never to have experienced such. At 69, I was very fit until recently, walking three rounds of golf and looking after my own two-acre garden and field as well as labouring for my builders,

I appreciate Mr Edwards’ suggestion but I fear my cardiologist might have something to say against such a suggestion as I am currently awaiting two cardiac procedures. So with respect, Mr Edwards, before you make such suggestions in future you might wish to find out more facts about the individual you name and the size of their shopping venture! Health and safety isn’t a waste of time

I was surprised, but glad, to read Jacob Rees-Mogg’s comments regarding the Grenfell Tower disaster as being “awful and preventable” in the July edition of Keynshamvoice. He also admits the fact “that it could happen in so developed a country shames our nation”. This is interesting in the light of his comments in The Independent on December 6, 2016, when he

stated that regulations that were “good enough for India” could be applied here after Brexit. The Grenfell Tower disaster revealed that this attitude is already being applied. It has been reported that the quality of the cladding was downgraded to save £293,000 and the poorer residents of Kensington and Chelsea were the ones to suffer. It has become fashionable for people to deride health and safety laws, especially if none of their own families are put at risk. They also seem to think that we have become somehow weaker since the instigation of these laws, but the only people to profit from abandoning them will be the profiteers, not the people who actually do the work or people living in substandard accommodation. They forget the debt of gratitude we owe to those who have lost their lives or become seriously injured building our railways, canals and bridges, not to mention high-rise buildings, and that all the laws that have come from Brussels are not just a waste of time. M Lake Keynsham

Generosity and hard work behind event May I please, through your excellent publication, thank all those hundreds of people who helped put on a magnificent 21st Keynsham Music Festival of 2017. From the afternoon tea to the opera, from the orchestra to the Sunday in the park, it was a true community event where all were welcome and safe. Thank you, all of you, for making it possible. I have been involved in every music festival and each year it gives me great pleasure so see the fruits of the enormous efforts that some of us put into making it a success. The total collection from the buckets on Sunday was £11,111.17 which is the most ever! Thank you so much for your generosity. The Saturday collection was £802.12. I spent three hours on the Sunday shaking buckets to support the festival and, while almost everybody was charming, a few refused to donate by either simply walking past us as though we were invisible or by saying it was a free festival. It is and

25 if there are people who cannot afford to give, then I will be the first to let them through. It is a community festival for the whole of Keynsham. I hope it is helpful to explain why we need to raise money in this way. Last year, the festival cost about £72,000 to put on. All musicians on the Sunday play for free, our costs are the marquees, the toilets, the security, hire of equipment and services (like St John Ambulance), the wages of the site crew and festival organiser, various licences and insurances. About one quarter of our income comes from the magnificent Keynsham Town Council. They also help in kind as well. We no longer receive our B&NES commission of £7,000 due to central government cuts. B&NES always tries to support the festival but it is becoming extremely hard for them to do so. The rest of the money is raised by hard-working Keynsham people, through sponsorship and grants (the festival is now a charity), selling stuff like wristbands and getting Continued on Page 26

Members were delighted to receive a cheque from staff at Andrews Keynsham, during a fun evening of fancy dress and music. The team at the estate agents helped the Lions Club of Keynsham organise the race and sold tickets for the competition, which saw hundreds of yellow plastic ducks released into the Chew at Keynsham Music Festival. OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome Social quiz evening

Because the popular Keynsham Walkers are Welcome walks have become very social, it was decided to organise some evening events to keep the camaraderie going. Our first was three months ago when 30 people turned up for a hugely enjoyable skittles night. So it was most heartening when almost 50 people, mostly members of Keynsham Walkers are Welcome with their friends, turned up for the fun quiz evening held at the Conservative Club on Saturday, July 22. With about 12 people coming on their own, teams of four were arranged for everyone. There were 45 questions of trivia, while a picture round provided the intrigue, and scoring was very close. In the end it was group organiser Marie Carder, husband Alan and two friends who were victorious, with a creditable 53 points out of a possible 61. The organisers can reflect on another successful evening, with a promise of another social

Dates for the diary Hardy walkers brave the rain for a hike, stopping off at Bitton Station evening to come. Our thanks go to Keynsham Conservative Club for the use of their excellent facilities, but also to Judith Bryant, who gave up her evening to act as scorer.

July walk

Twelve hardy souls, including three new members, braved atrocious conditions on Sunday, July 23, and turned up at the Memorial Park Cafe for the monthly four-mile walk, this time to Willsbridge Mill and Bitton. Setting off just after 10am, and in driving rain, we

followed the River Avon, passed Londonderry Wharf, and went along the dramway to Willsbridge Mill. Because of the weather, descriptions of points of interest were limited, so we were pleased to arrive at the shelter of the Bitton Station buffet, where we stopped for refreshment. It was here that the rain stopped and, suitably nourished, we continued the remainder of the walk back to Keynsham via the cycle path and Monarch’s Way. It was a bedraggled but happy bunch that made their way home from the finish point!

Sunday, August 6 Meet 10am, Memorial Park cafe A 10-mile circular trek to Kelston Roundhill and back. This is a very hilly walk and not for the fainthearted. A refreshment stop will be made en route, returning to Keynsham at about 4.30pm. Everybody welcome, but must be capable of completing the course. Sunday, August 29 Meet 10am, Memorial Park cafe A short three-mile walk around Stockwood Vale, returning at about 12.30pm. There is some hill walking involved. Everybody welcome again. Sunday, September 17 Meet 10am, Memorial Park cafe A two to three-mile walk following the Keynsham In Bloom Bike Trail, should be back by 12.30pm. Everybody welcome again. l Details from the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome website, or contact Dave on 07866 440968 or at wrwkeynsham@outlook.com

A TOWN TREASURE with St John’s Church treasurer Anne Hewett

Confectionery tales

M

y name is Anne Hewett and I am the new St John’s Church treasurer; we have lived in Keynsham nearly 40 years now, since we were first married. We brought up our two children here, and now enjoy the company of two grandchildren, who live nearby. I recently “retired” as a head teacher and volunteering to be treasurer for the Church Council was not something I ever imagined taking on… It has been a steep learning curve but I am enjoying the challenge! We moved to Keynsham mainly because I was a Cadbury representative, working out of the Somerdale depot, while Alan,

my husband, taught nearby. I worked in a team of lovely people and I still remember a story I was told at my initial training in Bournville. Jim told us that when he was a rep, he had always enjoyed visiting his customers and built up good relationships with them all. They were always pleased to see him when he made his regular calls for orders; he almost became part of the family in some shops. Imagine his surprise and shock one day when he visited a key customer to find that his chocolate bars had been moved to the back of his Cadbury stand, to make way for Mars products! This had really affected the Cadbury sales, and as a result the customer made a much smaller repeat order. Jim was disappointed not only at his loss of sales, but because he had valued the customer as a true friend he could rely on. The customer was a little sheepish but confided that the Mars rep had been really pushy

and aggressive and he hadn’t liked to say no, he knew the Cadbury rep would understand… Cadbury representatives were real gentlemen; they were not so well prepared for the more cut-throat style of their American competitors. Cadburys was an institution, especially here in Keynsham… (who could ever have imagined the Somerdale factory would close less than 40 years later?). I have often thought about that story, because it rings so true in the Church, which now competes with so many other things to have a place in our hearts… and pockets! The Church is always there for us; that fixed anchor in the centre of town. We may well not go there very much, but there must be few families in Keynsham that have not come to St John’s Church for a Christmas carol service, or a baptism, wedding or funeral, or to take a pleasant shortcut at the end of the High Street. The same church that is there

for our “hatch, match and despatch” moments of life is there week on week, ready to give a welcome and listening ear to all who come through the doors of both the church and hall. The Church is possibly unique in its outlook; is there any other organisation around that exists for the needs of people outside of it as much as for its own members? When we come through its doors, we may generously drop a note in the collection plate… without a thought for the ongoing costs of maintaining an older building throughout the year. The Church must be pretty rich, you might say, sitting on so many assets. The Church has always been there, and always will be; it’s an institution. Isn’t it? We somehow just assume the Church can exist on thin air. (While it is asset rich it relies on donations for daily costs.) There are so many pressing calls on our money and the Church is just not one of them, for so many of us. The Church is soft and inviting like a strawberry cream… but maybe we need a harder centre in there, too?!

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

This view of Bath Hill East appears to date from the early 1950s. The road was once known as Dragon’s Hill, after the Green Dragon public house, which was one of the properties on the right. Before rebuilding by the Turnpike Trust in the 1820s, the road ran immediately in front of these houses and steeply down past the Fox & Hounds, which was set back from the line of the newer row of shops and houses, and demolished at the time the bypass was built. In the 1968 flood, these shops were extensively damaged and were demolished after it was decided to raise the road level to suit the replacement Chew Bridge.

A comedian who has shared the stage with likes of Michael McIntyre and Lee Evans is launching his own monthly comedy night in the heart of Keynsham. Andy Askins’ career has seen him perform in venues as diverse as The Royal Albert Hall and army bases in Afghanistan – and now he will be adding the Space in Keynsham to the list. “My family and I have wanted to start a comedy club for a long time and moving to the area is affording us that opportunity,” he said. “I’ve performed in a lot of different venues, from fantastic to awful, and I’d like mine to be the former. The Space in Keynsham stood out as a candidate and with local support I’m sure we can get a fantastic monthly comedy night with a bill of comedians that would be the envy of most venues in the UK.” Since becoming a full-time comedian in 2005 Andy has headlined all the UK major

comedy clubs and can be seen regularly at The Comedy Stores in London and Manchester. He is a talented musician whose routines include a mix of original comic songs and parodies, as seen on BBC One’s The John Bishop Show, after which he was asked to return for The John Bishop Christmas Show. He performed at the Edinburgh Festival for the first time last year with his show Andy Askins: The Man With No Name. Andy hopes Smiley Spaces comedy night will build up a regular following and become a highlight of the month in the town’s events calendar. The first event on Friday, September 1, will see Andy himself taking to the stage alongside Paul Thorne and Markus Birdman. Tickets cost £11 in advance from 0844 844 2920 or www.smileyspaces.co.uk or £12.50 on the door.

THE BIG PICTURE

Film review with Harrison Thorne

Dunkirk is another masterpiece from director Nolan

D

unkirk (12A) is the tenth directorial attempt from universally acclaimed director Christopher Nolan and details the infamous extraction of nearly 300,000 men from the beach of Dunkirk during World War II. Nolan opts for an ultra-realistic depiction of the event with drawnout, tense sequences and subdued performances. I immediately noticed how beautifully shot the film is – right from the opening scene the viewer is gifted with glorious cinematography that perfectly captures the tense and hopeless atmosphere as well as the sheer scale of the event taking place. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema chose to film Dunkirk primarily on IMAX 65mm film and it shows, allowing each frame to burst with atmosphere, colour and detail. One of the huge risks that Nolan took with Dunkirk is the desertion

Glorious cinematography perfectly captures the tense, hopeless atmosphere as well as the sheer scale of the event

of character. Nolan chooses to not develop any of his characters or give them any sort of memorable characteristics or names which the audience would usually connect and empathise with. Normally this would seriously hurt any film but here the risk pays off with the audience seeing each character as nothing more than an individual soldier in a grand army. This allows the many different characters to be seen how Nolan wants the audience to see them: as a whole country unifying to save 400,000 of its own men from certain death.

Nolan also directs his actors masterfully with very little dialogue. Tom Hardy, Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance and – surprisingly – Harry Styles are standouts here by collectively conveying the hopelessness of the situation and the raw emotion that is brought out in near-death moments. The film was shot primarily on location, which deserves credit as well as real Spitfire MK1s being used for the aerial action sequences instead of computer generated imagery, which only adds to the realism. In conclusion, Dunkirk is another masterpiece from Christopher Nolan, with breathtaking visuals, great performances and a perfect score from Hans Zimmer all culminating to make one of the most realistic war films ever put to screen. Everyone should see this film.  5/5

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry With a beautiful cover and recently in the top ten fiction books in The Times’ book list, this story is set in 1893 and is weaved around the character of Cora Seaborne. When her husband dies, she enters into her new life as a widow with more relief than sadness as her marriage was not happy. However, accompanied by her son Francis – a somewhat obsessive boy – she leaves London for Essex, drawn by the idea of fresh air and fossil hunting. Cora is a very keen amateur naturalist and is always on the lookout for rare fossils. As soon as the family are lodged in Colchester, however, they soon begin to hear of a mythical Essex Serpent that has returned to the coastal village of Aldwinter and appears to roam the marshes, claiming lives! As Cora sets out on its trail, she meets William Ransome, Aldwinter's vicar. He is very suspicious of the panic around the Essex Serpent and so begins a friendship with Cora based on faith and science. This relationship becomes intense and involves all those around them. Though they disagree on virtually everything they are drawn together and then torn apart, eventually changing each other’s lives in many unexpected ways. I must admit I found this book a bit tricky to start with but once the story progressed I found this a wonderful read, with lots to think about. Cora is a great character and the descriptions of the historic marshes are a real treat. Heartstone by CJ Sansom For all historical crime fans, this is a great summer read. Heartstone is the fifth novel in Sansom’s Shardlake series. Set in the 16th

century, Matthew Shardlake – lawyer and parttime investigator – receives his next case from a servant of Queen Catherine Parr and is soon travellling to Portsmouth to investigate wrongs committed against his young ward, Hugh Curteys. As Portsmouth prepares for war against the French, Shardlake and his assistant Barak also find themselves embroiled in the case of Ellen Pettiplace, who is locked up in Bedlam. CJ Sansom conjures up 16thcentury life very well. He mixes the politics of the time with the figure of King Henry VIII looming over court life and the life of everyday people. Full of action, this series is particularly enjoyable historical fiction.

Young Adult Fiction

All Fall Down by Ally Carter Ally Carter is a very popular writer focusing on spies, thieves and teenagers and this is book one of the Embassy Row series. Grace reluctantly has been sent to stay at her diplomat grandpa’s house in splendid Embassy Row, where trespassing into the wrong garden can cause a diplomatic incident. She always ignores the rules even though she knows she mustn’t. But there are three things she is certain of: 1) She isn’t crazy; 2) Her mother was murdered and 3) One day she will find the man with the scar and then she is going to make him pay! Then she spots the scarred man and so begins her adventure – after, of course, she has roped in all her friends to help with the

investigation. A great teenage read!

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Nature reclaims land from industries

une and July saw two excellent visits to the Mendips by members of Keynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust. The trips were equally enjoyable in spite of very contrasting objectives for each walk, writes chairman Dave Sage. The first walk, in late June, was to the old lead mines near Charterhouse, with 12 members led by recorder Helena Crouch. Her knowledge of the history and wildlife of the area was extraordinary, each plant located, identified and described with consummate ease. Helena explained that the unusually rich biodiversity and “botanical treasures” (locally common but nationally rare plants) were due, at least in part, to the geology and industry of the area. With bedrock of carboniferous limestone producing alkaline soil, capped with acidic windblown loess, mixed up by mining activities, a unique mosaic of soil types is produced. The amazing variety of plants included soft sedge, red-tinted hawkweed, brittle bladder fern, slender bedstraw, bee orchid, lead-tolerant sea campion and dozens more common and notso-common species. In addition, we saw plenty of insects, including scarlet tiger moths and a range of butterflies, notably small heath, dark green fritillary, marbled white, green hairstreak and large skipper. Wheeling overhead, and keeping the insect population in check, were plenty of swifts and house martins. A fascinating,

Six spot burnet moths on ragwort, above. Left from top: Helena Crouch identifying Mendip plants; a bee orchid, a real botanical treasure; Ray Barnett identifying a beetle unusual, if not unique ecosystem, living testament to nature’s ability to bounce back from devastating human disturbance! The second walk, in mid-July was a few miles east at Priddy mineries and pools. Nineteen of us, led by expert Ray Barnett, were treated to a large variety of insect life. What was extraordinary was that we probably walked no further than half a mile in two hours, so rich was the diversity! We located, identified and photographed dragonflies (common darter, black-tailed skimmer, southern hawker, emperor), damselflies (common blue, emerald), butterflies (marbled

white, small skipper, meadow brown, ringlet, small heath) and moths (scarlet tiger, six spot burnet, plume, brown china mark, large yellow underwing). Add beetles (froghopper, devil’s coach horse, leaf, soldier), grasshoppers and scorpion flies to complete the cast of zoological treasures of the Mendips! As a bonus, we also saw a whinchat, a spotted flycatcher and a host of Mendip flowers. A magical afternoon! Our next meeting is on Friday, August 11, at Elm Farm in Burnett, where we will be hunting for – bats! Call 0117 909 9667 for further details.

100th birthday celebrations made ‘perfect day’, says John A World War II veteran celebrated his centenary in style, taking a trip down memory lane in an old Army truck alongside a group of re-enactors in full costume. George Jeans-Winkworth, who is known as John, turned 100 last month and was joined by friends, relatives and staff at Kingfisher Lodge in Saltford for a champagne reception, complete with a birthday cake made by the home’s chef Karen Brickell. World War II re-enactor Paul Hurren and friends joined the celebrations, bringing memorabilia and a Somerset Light Infantry tie, which they presented to John as a gift. John said: “To tell you the truth I wasn’t looking forward to it, but I’m so glad now that I didn’t stop it. It was a perfect day. I’ve never known a day like it in my life. I don’t remember a time where I had so much attention on me or so many photographs. “Coming home from lunch and seeing the Army truck and all the people was just great,

George JeansWinkworth, better known as John, with World War II re-enactors at his 100th birthday party and I even got a ride around the roads in it.” John was born and raised in Bath, attending Walcot School, and was called up to join the Army in January 1940 at the age of 22, becoming part of the Somerset Light Infantry HQ43 Division. He then enjoyed working as a grocer for 30 years and led an active life. Among the guests at his birthday bash were nieces Diana and Rosemary and nephew Rex. They said: “Uncle Birt, as we call him, has been a fantastic

uncle and friend to so many over the past hundred years, and it’s wonderful to be with him on this very special day to say just how proud he makes us feel.” Lesley Cole, general manager of Barchester Kingfisher Lodge, added: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable man as he reaches this amazing milestone. John is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as he breaks into his next century.”

Charity thanks building society team for their ‘amazing support’ From a 10k run to raffles, staff at Coventry Building Society’s Keynsham branch haven’t been short of ideas to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Over the past 12 months, the team has organised book sales and cake sales as well as holding a raffle and pulling on their running shoes for the cause. They were delighted to be able to present a cheque for £1,312 to regional fundraiser Charlie Porter when she visited the branch recently. The sum brings the total raised for the trust by the team to £4,000 and customer adviser Wendy Blackmore said: “We are proud to be able to support Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) again this year. “It’s a charity very close to our hearts as some of our members have needed the support of TCT and have spoken very highly of

Stacey Hatherell, branch manager, Sarah Morgan, branch manager, Debra Evans, community champion, and Charlie Porter from The Teenage Cancer Trust the fantastic work that they do.” “We are incredibly grateful and fortunate to have the support of the Keynsham Coventry Building Society,” said Charlie. “They have been amazing supporters of the charity over

the last few years and are always keen to get involved and help anyway they can! “On behalf of the team and everyone at the charity, we would like to say a huge thank you for their continuous support.”

Service helps older people claim £1m Older people in Keynsham and across the district were helped by Age UK B&NES to claim almost £1 million in benefits they had been missing out on last year. The charity carried out the benefit checks as part of its free information and advice service, which also offers guidance on care, housing, finance and social opportunities to older people and their families. Age UK B&NES chief executive Janet Dabbs said: “We’re helping more and more residents who need a basic check on their benefits entitlement as well as practical help on managing their claims. “According to a recent report from the Department of Work and Pensions, around 1.7 million older people entitled to pension credit are not claiming it, and 2.2 million people entitled to council tax support are not taking up the benefit. “Significant changes were made to the state pension that came in on April 6, and older people may be unaware of how they will impact them. Also, many people don’t know about the Government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme, which provides extra help towards the cost of electricity for some people on low incomes. “The system can be quite bewildering and we’re here to provide free information and advice for older people and their families and carers. “Our advisers are available all through the summer at our Bath office and in Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Keynsham.” To find out more about the information and advice service, call in at the charity’s main office at 18 Kingsmead Square, Bath, which is open 9.30am-3.30pm, Monday to Friday, or call 01225 466135. A free national advice line is also available, and open 8am to 7pm 365 days a year, on 0800 678 1174. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

L

ast month the writer travelled to the Dorset coast to watch a re-enactment and commemorative play of the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. Keynsham was the site of what was literally a turning point in this campaign and merited an extended scene in the dramatic production. The main features of the story are as follows.

The Cause

On the death of Charles II on February 6, 1685, his brother succeeded to the throne as James II. Whereas Charles had been a Protestant, the new king was Catholic and there were fears among many that another period of religious suppression was imminent. The Duke of Monmouth, also James, was the illegitimate son of Charles II and so had a claim to the throne. He was Protestant, an experienced soldier and personable; he became the focus of a move to take the throne from his uncle.

The Landing and March

When he thought he could muster enough support, Monmouth returned from a period of selfimposed exile in Holland, with a few small boats and fewer than 100 men. He landed on the beach at Lyme Regis on June 11, 1685, to be met by a group of supporters from the small community, which was then separate from the main town. The location would have been quiet and, unlike the re-enactment, it would not have been disturbed by sirens announcing a launch of the RNLI lifeboat! Although the rebellion had been a long time in gestation,

A re-enactment of the Monmouth Rebellion in Lyme Regis, above; the County Bridge at Keynsham where the Duke of Monmouth’s troops planned to cross the Avon on their way to capture Bristol, below there was a lack of effective planning with funds, weapons and fighting skills all in short supply. Nonetheless, Monmouth began his march north towards Taunton, hoping to attract much promised support along the route. By the time they reach the county town the army had grown to about 6,000, mostly working people and tradesmen. After a pause, in which he was “crowned”, Monmouth and his supporters continued northwards, intending to take Bristol, an essential first step before moving on to London. But Bristol Castle, on the bank of the River Avon, would have been difficult to seize from the south so the rebels planned to

cross the river at the next bridge, the County Bridge at Keynsham, and attack from the north. They reached Pensford and moved on to Keynsham. Things then began to go wrong for Monmouth.

As it was, the “Pitchfork Rebellion” had only a few days more to run. Despite a victory at Norton St Phillip, Monmouth headed back into the South West, to Bridgwater. It was outside that town, on the barren wastes of Sedgemoor, that he tried to surprise the Royal Army in a night attack on July 6. The attack failed and the rebel force was destroyed in the ensuing battle. Monmouth was captured, tried and executed. King James then exacted retribution on those who had supported him by sending Judge Jeffreys to hold his infamous “Bloody Assizes” in the principal towns in the West. Hundreds were executed, including at least six in Keynsham, reputedly hung on Bath Hill close to the present Lichfield Lodge. So next time you walk along the river from the Lock Keeper towards The Chequers (perhaps using one of the Local History Society’s walk leaflets to guide you), imagine the scene on a wet night in June 1685, when this field marked the highwater mark of the last rebellion against the Crown in England.

At Keynsham

The King had been told of the rebellion and dispatched a cavalry force to the Bristol area, led by John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough. He also instructed the 1st Duke of Beaufort to destroy the County Bridge (the letter still exists!). Nature also played a part as the dry weather gave way to heavy rain, making life even more uncomfortable for the ill-protected rebel army. The bridge was only partially destroyed by the time Monmouth reached and took control of Keynsham on June 26. His men repaired it and the rebels crossed to set up camp in Sydenham Mead, the large meadow between the Willsbridge Road and the river along the side of Fry’s. The Duke himself was in the dry at the Abbey House. A lookout was posted on

er sale

Sydenham Mead in Keynsham, where the rebels set up camp

the recently-built tower of St John’s and reported cavalry on the edge of the village. There were several skirmishes with detachments of these King’s cavalry, the rebels generally having the better of them. From the information he had, Monmouth gained the impression that the King’s forces were stronger than they really were. He wrongly believed that infantry reinforcements had reached Bristol,

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Community spirit on

Opportunity to go behind closed doors Go behind the scenes at historic buildings across Bath and North East Somerset next month as venues open their doors for Heritage Open Doors Day. The nationwide event returns from Thursday, September 7, to Sunday, September 10, and will offer a different perspective on some of the area’s history and architecture. Saltford Brass Mill will be showing visitors its 18ft working water wheel and sharing information about industry in the area in days gone by, while Roman and medieval artefacts discovered beneath Keynsham will be on display at Pixash Lane Archaeology Store. In Bath, there will be the chance to see inside No 4 The Circus and explore its restored Georgian garden, to visit Fairfield House, the former home of Emporer Haile Selassie, and to learn more about restoration work at the historic Cleveland Pools, among other attractions. Councillor Paul Myers, Cabinet member for economic and community regeneration, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to see behind the scenes at venues that are normally closed to the public – from historic buildings to gardens and museum stores.” For more information, visit www.romanbaths.co.uk/events/ heritageopendays For information about what’s happening around the country, visit www.heritageopendays. org.uk

An inspiring event

A motivational event held in Keynsham gave those attending the perfect boost for summer, according to feedback. Make That Change was held at the Space on July 9 and hosted by Nicky Marshall and Laura Barnett with the aim of inspiring people to make changes and improve their lives. With eight speakers taking to the stage, feedback was very positive with one guest saying she hoped it would be the first of many such events. She added: “Laura and Nicky at Discover Your Bounce produced a great event for Keynsham when so many events of this calibre are held in Bristol or Bath – this time Keynsham got to benefit.”

The South West in Bloom judges were full of praise for the town’s efforts during their visit on July 14 – now it’s time to sit back and just enjoy the beautiful displays in our public spaces as the community awaits the results in the autumn. It was also time for green-fingered residents to show off their own gardens in Keynsham in Bloom’s gardening competition. Chair Denise James reports As I write the August article, I find myself thinking how quickly our time has flown by for our Bloom group. Despite preparations starting in January, it seems only a couple of months ago that the committee met to discuss and prepare for our RHS South West in Bloom regional judging tour. Well, the sun came out and we welcomed our judges: Bob Sweet, former RHS head of shows judge, and Richard Taylor, who is also an experienced Green Flag judge and Eco Schools assessor. Judging by the comments received by them, I am sure they could both see the community

Denise James with South West in Bloom judges Bob Sweet and Richard Taylor in the Memorial Park spirit that Keynsham is renowned for. Keynsham should once again be extremely proud of what the community has achieved and the hard work and determination that everyone has contributed to this year’s entry into Britain in Bloom. We will, however, have to wait until

October 5 to hear whether we have retained Gold for a fourth consecutive year, when the winners are announced at the South West’s regional awards ceremony, which is being held at The Imperial Hotel, Torquay. Richard Taylor’s departing message to us after the tour was:

It will take a little time to digest it all. On behalf of Bob and myself... pass on our grateful thanks to all the people we met on the judging tour and for your kind hospitality. We have been given the opportunity to see such an array of ‘Blooming’ work right across Keynsham.” Our judging tour started at Old Vicarage Green where the judges met residents, who showed them around the communal gardens that they tend throughout the year. We then proceeded down to the railway station, where they met representatives from GWR, Severnside Community Rail Partnership, B&NES Community Challenge and Hochtief. Artist Faye Joines from Priormade was also on hand to talk about

the wonderful art installation, which was only completed and installed a couple of days before the judging tour. They also visited St Dunstan’s Church communal garden, Keynsham Memorial Park, Community at 67, Keynsham Allotments, Temple Court and Keynsham Scout Headquarters. Judges also stopped off to see Mr and Mrs Kirby’s garden in Charlton Park to look at the wonderful wildlife habitat they have created over the years. We also walked the judges along the High Street, to show them the additional planters that have been installed as part of the oneway system. These have provided some additional colour and a real wow factor along the High Street. A presentation highlighting our Bloom activities over the last year and community lunch was

Our own judges have also been busy this month, judging more than 40 entries into our local competition. We had a range of entries, from residential gardens to community groups, businesses and places of worship, allotments, St Keyna Primary School and young people’s organisations. Each year the entries are getting stronger and it is extremely difficult sometimes to pick an overall winner. It is good to see some entries from the recently developed housing estates and we look forward to seeing more new entries from across Keynsham next year. We will be announcing the winners at our annual Keynsham in Bloom awards presentation in October following the regional competition presentation.

Park flies the flag again!

We can, however, celebrate one award – our very own Keynsham Memorial Park has once again been given Green Flag status. The Memorial Park and Bath’s Victoria Park are both destination parks and have won Green Flags many times. We should be very proud of having a destination park in our small town. The award signifies that the park has achieved the highest possible environmental standards, is well maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

n NEWS Make a will and support the RUH Two solicitors in Keynsham will once again be helping residents make a will while supporting their local hospital, too. The Forever Friends Appeal, the fundraising charity for the Royal United Hospitals (RUH), has teamed up with solicitor firms across the area for Make a Will Month in September. Wards and FDC Law in Keynsham are both taking part in the initiative in which people can make a standard will or two standard mirror wills for the reduced price of £150. Fees raised will go to the Forever Friends Appeal to support the work of the hospitals. Jan Witt, In Memory and Legacy officer at the Forever Friends Appeal, said: “It may come as a surprise that fewer than half of the population have an up-to-date will, despite its importance in offering you peace of mind and security for both you and your family. Therefore, we’d like to urge people to take advantage of this will-writing offer to ensure your savings and possessions go to the people you love and care for. “Make a Will Month is such a great initiative and as well as supporting your local hospital, you can request that the fee is donated to a specific area of the hospital if you have a special connection to a ward or department in the RUH we can make sure they benefit from it.” To have a will written during September, contact any of the 15 firms taking part in Make a Will Month. A

few weeks ago I received an email from a friend I had known at university, reminding me that we graduated 40 years ago and we shouldn’t let the occasion pass without some sort of celebration. I hadn’t seen him for seven years and he suggested that we should meet another friend whom I hadn’t seen for over 30 years. So the three of us, along with our wives, drove to Southampton where we had planned to walk across the campus, look at the buildings and possibly find the Black Cat cafe on the high street where we could buy a threecourse lunch for 50p (in 1977)!

n NEWS

My T-shirt had a quote from Plato: ‘Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.’

We had quite a shock when we arrived, as there was a large “Welcome” banner at the campus! We soon discovered that the university was having an open day in order to attract new students, and all of the buildings were open. We headed for the physics department, explained that we had graduated in physics in 1977 and were treated a bit like royalty by the student ambassadors there. We looked around the building, saw the lecture theatres and seminar rooms and were really amazed to find that two staff who taught in 1977 were still members of the faculty. We were given complimentary T-shirts by the staff to mark our unannounced visit. My T-shirt had a quote from Plato: “Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from

STORAGE

this world to another.” It seemed so appropriate for me, because it was during my time as a student that I investigated the claims of Jesus Christ, and discovered that I could indeed experience a new world, where Christ was central, where his love was abundant and his forgiveness was unending. I left Southampton with a degree but even more importantly, I found a faith which has shaped what I have done with my life ever since. The Black Cat cafe closed a long time ago, but the university is expanding and the Christian groups are thriving. Thankfully you don’t have to go to university to become a Christian, you can put your faith in Christ wherever you are. It was a remarkable reunion, full of surprises and a fitting way to celebrate a very significant period of time 40 years ago.

New minister for Methodist church With around 200 Methodist ministers on the move to new parishes around the country, Keynsham Methodist Church is among those welcoming a new face. Reverend Jane Wilson, pictured, has arrived from Droitwich, replacing Rev Philip Simpkins, who has moved to oversee churches in Alton, Hale and Rowledge in Hampshire after seven years in Keynsham. Jane has moved to the town with husband Graham. They enjoy listening to, playing and writing music and have four children, two of whom live and work in London, while the others are at university.

n SPORT Club bowled over by a rare ‘hot shot’

With much activity taking place on the green in Keynsham Park two of the highlights recently relate to the ladies of the club, writes our correspondent. Playing at home to Bath in the North Somerset League they achieved a “hot shot”, such an unusual occurrence that Bowls England issues certificates to recognise the occasion. A hot shot is when all of the eight woods bowled by the team end up closer to the jack than the closest wood bowled by the opposition. Our photograph shows the four ladies with their certificates – from left to right, Pam Rose, Lesley Portch, Brenda Higson and Pam Edge. The second incident centred around the closest result so far this season. The ladies were at home to Purnells in the Fear Cup and with just one wood to play they were losing by two shots. The skip was Brenda Higson and her wood picked up the jack, taking it through to the back of the green and earning five shots – a three-shot victory taking Keynsham into the next round of the competition. As we now enter the second half of the season competition now increases in the various leagues that Keynsham play in, as teams battle for promotion and – in some cases – to avoid

relegation. Individual members are also busy playing one another in the various club internal competitions. As I write this it has just started to rain and it is scheduled to continue to do so for several hours. The green manager’s prayer has been answered!

Centenary match a ‘special day’ in bowls club history Presenting John Clothier’s collection of lapel badges, above; Somerset president Ken Leamon presents Frys Bowling Club with a commemorative shield, left

Frys Bowling Club celebrated their centenary on July 11 with a game against the Somerset Bowls Association Executive, writes our correspondent. The longest-serving member of the club, Brian Hill, who has played for Frys for 59 years, captained the team for the day. Soon after the game started, the rain came and it was Somerset who dealt with the conditions better. Despite this, a number of rinks held their own, not letting Somerset get too far ahead. As the game went on, Somerset’s quality showed as they pulled away in the second half of the game to record a comfortable win.

After the game, Frys Bowling Club chairman Andy Kendall welcomed the officers and representatives of the Somerset Bowls Association, saying it was an honour that Somerset could celebrate with Frys. The chairman went on to thank the officers and members who had kept the club going over the years. The chairman also thanked the club secretary for organising the game, the publicity officer for the display of club trophies and club history, the ladies for providing the post-match meal and those members who organised the flower displays for the tables and around the surrounds of the green.

Players and officials at Frys Bowling Club’s centenary match against the Somerset Bowls Association Executive After the chairman had spoken, Somerset president Ken Leamon congratulated Frys on reaching 100 years. He made a presentation to captain of the day, Brian Hill, for his many years’ membership of the club. The president also thanked all those members of Frys who had given up their time to put the game together and then presented Frys with a shield to mark the game.

The day finished with a special presentation from the secretary on behalf of the family of former life member of the club John Clothier, who sadly passed away around 10 years ago. After his wife passed away earlier this year, the family gave Frys Bowling Club John’s collection of lapel badges and other similar items he had collected over the years. That rounded off a special

day in the history of Frys Bowling Club, celebrating their centenary season and looking ahead to the next chapter in the club’s history. Meanwhile, Frys were sitting third in the table in the Bristol and District Bowls League as of July 20, following wins against Avonvale, BAC and Knowle B and defeats to Weston Bath and Henleaze A. The club suffered an 89-65

loss against Weston Bath in the first round of the Somerset Bowls Association Turnbull Cup and were knocked out of the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey second round by Bristol. They have advanced to the second round of the Somerset Bowls Association Wedmore Plate, however, after an 80-68 victory over Chew Stoke.

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field

Preparations are well under way for the start of Keynsham Town’s 2017-18 campaign.

The Ks’ new management team of John Allen, Russell Holt and Mark Read are hopeful of pushing on from last season’s vastly improved performance, in which they finished fourth in the Toolstation Western League Division One table, only just missing out on promotion after amassing an impressive tally of 81 points. The club play their home games at the AJN Stadium, which is located at Crown Fields next to

Keynsham Rugby Club. With the assistance of the club’s facility management company, Brea Avalon LLP, the stadium includes both standing and seating areas, a fine clubhouse and a state-ofthe-art 3G artificial pitch, which was installed six years ago. This provides an excellent surface for football and also means that games can still be played in inclement weather conditions where the majority of grass pitches would be unplayable. There have been changes at the club this summer as, due to personal commitments, Chris King (manager) and Sean Day (assistant manager) decided to step down from their roles at the end of last season. The club has brought in John Allen and Mark Read from Wells City to replace them. John will manage the team, with Mark filling the coaching role and Russell Holt remaining from last season’s management team as assistant manager. Vice chairman Adrian Cole said: “I would like to put on record the committee’s thanks

for the excellent job Chris and Sean did since assuming the managerial reins in September 2014. Their first full season in charge, assisted by Russ Holt, saw the club finish within 10 points of the Division One winners. Then we only narrowly missed out on promotion back in April, despite having our best season for 15 years. “We have been fortunate enough to procure the services of John and Mark from Wells City. Both were key figures in Wells’ promotion and Somerset Premier

Cup double in 2015-16 and know what it takes to bring success to a club. We are also delighted that Russ has agreed to stay at the club as John’s assistant, as this will give some stability for the players.” The Ks’ league position last season has once again earned them a place in the FA Cup. The road to Wembley begins with a tough-looking visit to Western League Premier side Bridgwater Town on Saturday, August 5. With the extensive refurbishment being carried out

to the Crown Fields clubhouse and changing rooms, the Ks’ first few games are all away from home. The opening league match of the new season sees them visit Bishops Lydeard on Saturday, August 12. This is followed by games at Portishead Town (August 15), Bishop Sutton (August 19), Almondsbury (August 22) and a League Cup tie at Bridport on August 26. The new-look Crown Fields will host its first home game on Tuesday, August 29, with Cheddar the visitors (7.45pm

kick-off), before Devizes Town visit on Saturday, September 2 (3pm kick-off). Off the pitch, the club have renewed their sponsorship deal with the Keynsham-based company Dribuild. The deal will see the stand at Crown Fields continue to be named the Dribuild Stand. Deals have also been renewed with KitCo, Smart Computers and The Old Bank to purchase the First Team’s new home and away kits next season. However, a new club sponsor for the

Reserve Team will be welcomed to the club in 2017-18, with Bargain Booze buying a brand new kit. Club secretary Julian French said: “In times of ever-increasing running costs, sponsorship both from companies and individuals alike is the lifeblood of a club like Keynsham Town and these deals are massive in helping our club survive and move forwards. “We are also giving our fans the opportunity to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and get some great benefits through a seasonlong sponsorship for a one-off payment of £25. “This sponsorship runs throughout the 2017/18 season, and includes your name and/or business name located alongside the player profile within our match-day programme, confirmation of your sponsorship on the official club website http://keynshamtownfc.net and on Facebook and Twitter, plus the chance to attend our Sponsors’ Evening at the end of the season.

“We also have several other sponsorship packages available throughout the season”. If you are interested, please contact Julian French at jules1233@live.com or on 07814 609853. He added: “I would urge Keynsham locals to come and cheer on their community team. After achieving the league’s highest average attendance in Division One of 100 last season, it would be nice to see that many people at Crown Fields week in, week out. “Admission costs just £6 for adults and £3 for concessions, including a free match programme. There is a fully licensed bar in our smart new clubhouse, as well as a wide range of food and refreshments available from our tea hut. You will be assured of a warm welcome and hopefully will see enough to make you want to return.” Keep an eye out for an update on how the season has started in the September issue of Keynshamvoice!

Firm’s match leads to win for charities A local heating firm has raised £1,500 to support the work of two mental health charities by hosting a football match. Staff at Warmley-based Gregor Heating, Electrical and Renewable Energy split into two teams for the annual game at Bitton Football Club, where the Blues stole the show and claimed a 5-2 victory over the Reds. The firm raised £1,500 from collection buckets during the match, which will all go to the B Strong U Belong partnership
