‘Pickpocket’ thefts prompt police warning to shoppers Police have issued advice to shoppers in Keynsham following a spate of “pickpocket-style” thefts on the High Street they believe are being carried out by offenders working in pairs. In the most recent incident, 83-year-old Marlene Hall’s purse, containing £75, was taken from her bag as she did some Christmas shopping in Peacocks at around midday on Friday, November 10. Her daughter Nikki Howell

said she was targeted by two women who saw her as “easy prey” and added: “They are clearly very professional at what they do as they did not disturb Mum, she had no idea that they had unzipped her bag and taken her purse.” After writing a post about the incident on Facebook to warn others, Nikki said she was shocked to be contacted by a number of people with similar experiences in recent weeks.

One woman said a friend who uses a walking frame was targeted in a charity shop, while a 62-year-old grandmother, Helen Wait, told the Bristol Post she discovered her purse had been taken as she shopped in discount store CM3 back in August. In another incident a woman said her mother’s purse was stolen after she put her handbag into her trolley as she looked at cards in Card Factory, while Continued on Page 8

Quarter opens the door to community A new era has begun at Keynsham’s former chocolate factory as its first residents move in and new restaurants and businesses open their doors to the public. Construction work on the £60 million Chocolate Quarter development is complete and was opened by St Monica Trust at the end of November. The Bristol-based care provider has created a 93-bed care home and 136 retirement apartments in two of the former Fry’s factory’s three blocks – but the concept at the heart of the scheme is to bring the generations together, says the trust, by opening up its facilities to the public. Among them is a spa, gym, swimming pool, cinema, hair and nail salons, a barber’s, craft

studios for pottery, woodwork and art and a new pizzeria, B Block. To celebrate the launch of the Chocolate Quarter, a community open day is being held on Saturday, December 2, from 10am to 4pm. Visitors on the day can expect pizza demonstrations, smoothie masterclasses, kids’ film screenings as well as the opportunity to find out more about gym membership, salon services, art classes and the chance to explore the residential show homes. The concept of a community hub that contains a retirement complex came from speaking to older people about what they wanted from their accommodation, said trust chief executive David Williams. “What we see here is the

Eye-catching features inside the buildings include an indoor garden area, complete with bandstand, table tennis, plenty of greenery and a play area for young visitors. Long-awaited junction revamp to begin More than five months of roadworks to transform the entrance to the Somerdale site have begun. Taylor Wimpey has unveiled plans to residents that will overhaul the junction of Keynsham Road, Chandos Road, Priory Road and the entrance to the new estate. People living around the site demanded urgent action from the developer earlier this year, telling Keynshamvoice they felt the junction was dangerous as cars cut across the top of Chandos Road to access Somerdale despite temporary barriers. They also called on the firm to fulfil promises for a pedestrian crossing to Keynsham Station. The new scheme, work on which began on November 27 with the realignment of Somerdale Road just inside the gates, will involve closing off the southern ends of Chandos and Priory Roads and rerouting existing residents through the

Concerned residents at the junction earlier this year Somerdale site. A new signal controlled pedestrian crossing will be installed at the junction as well as near the station. The works will also create a right-turn lane from Keynsham Road into Somerdale as well as dedicated left and rightturn lanes for traffic leaving the Somerdale site. Two new bus stops and improved street lighting will also be installed. Access to the junction from Priory Road and Chandos Road is due to be closed off

from February 5 after a turning point in Priory Road has been completed, and the closed section of Chandos Road will become a cycleway. From January 29, motorists will see temporary traffic lights on Keynsham Road as work is carried out in phases on the footpaths on both sides until May 7. Resurfacing will then be carried out overnight on Keynsham Road, Somerdale Road and Station Road until May 8.

Somerdale project director Adrian Slade said he was confident the new scheme addressed residents’ safety concerns. “The closure of Chandos Road and Priory Road will mean all existing residents will come to the junction from just one direction while the toucan crossings and islands will make it safer to cross and access the station, which is what we’ve planned all along. “We wanted everybody to draw breath and be confident from doing due diligence that we’ve considered the alternatives and now we have the best solution for Somerdale.” Future road improvements around the site will include a right-turn lane into Avon Mill Lane and a left-turn lane into Bath Hill at the other end, he said. There will also be parking restrictions within the Somerdale development to prevent rail commuters leaving their cars.

Why don’t my cats get on with each other?

C

ats are naturally solitary animals, yet a recent survey found that 44% of catowning households has more than one cat. Cats in general prefer not to fight. Instead they use visual and audible communication to avoid physical confrontations. Sharing a home can be difficult for cats and can result in stress-related behaviours, such as urine marking, and/or inter-cat aggression. Limited space in our homes can make it difficult for cats to avoid each other so it’s important to ensure that each cat has access to exit/entry points to the home, without having to interact with each other. The general rule of thumb for litter trays, food and water bowls is one for each cat and one spare. For example two cats require three litter trays, food and water bowls. This gives them more choice and more freedom. As well as physical aggression, cats can show aggression subtly such as blocking each other, staring, spending most of the time up high or hiding, changes in eating and grooming habits, or stress-related behaviours. Aggression can be seen in cats when they first meet and between cats that have been friendly but an event has resulted in aggression. These events can include changes in the home (such as renovation) or when a cat returns from time away (such as at the vets). Aggression can also be as a result of pain or an underlying medical problem, so it is advisable for cats to be examined by their vet. In addition, when a new cat is brought home and introduced to a resident cat, aggression can be due to territorial and/or fear-related issues. What can I do to help? Firstly, cats should be separated to prevent injury and further damage to their relationship. Avoid punishing the cats for fighting as arousal, anxiety and the risk of injury increases. Cats use scents known as pheromones to communicate

with each other and to reassure themselves. By scent swapping, you can reacquaint each cat without any physical contact. This involves rubbing a cotton cloth under the chin of one of the cats and then leaving it in the room with the other cat and vice versa. During this time, each cat should have access to their own feeding bowl, water bowl, litter tray etc. Use the door that physically separates the cats to encourage peaceful coexistence. Over time, controlled contact between the cats should be increased, e.g. cats on harnesses, highly palatable food at separate ends of a large room. Gradually reduce the distance between the cats, assessing them for any reactivity towards each other. Once there is no tension when they are relatively close, try to allow the cats to have monitored free access to each other. It can be difficult to predict how well the cats will get on and sometimes the relationship will not be repaired so it may be best for one of the cats to be rehomed. A synthetic pheromone can a very useful extra tool for you. This is a copy of the natural pheromone which is released by a mother when she is nursing her kittens, to encourage a feeling of safety, relationship bonding and happiness. This synthetic copy (Feliway Friends) is available as a diffuser which should be plugged in the area where cats spend most of their time (usually where they sleep) and has been shown to reduce signs of aggression. If your cats show aggressive tendencies and you would like more information, please contact Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 and ask to speak to a practice nurse.

Could you buy an extra gift this Christmas? A small team of volunteers who each year distribute thousands of Christmas presents to less fortunate children across the Bristol region are asking local people to spend £5 on one extra gift this year. Every Child Needs Christmas was launched five years ago and collects, wraps and delivers donated gifts for children across the BS postcode area, from babies to 16-year-olds.

Gifts should be around £5 and suitable for one of the following age ranges: under 1, 0-3, 3-5, 5-7, 7-10 and 10-16. The group has an Amazon gift list for anyone stuck for ideas and Keynsham’s nearest drop-off point is Cumberland House, 133 West Town Lane where gifts should be delivered before December 6. Have say on future 1,500 new homes Land to the north of Keynsham has been earmarked for around 1,500 new homes to be built between now and 2036 and residents have the chance to have their say. The four West of England councils – Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset – have published the final draft of the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) for the region, which maps out where up to 105,500 new homes will go over the next 20 years, as well as new schools, employment sites and changes to infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population. A public consultation on the document has now been launched and will run until January 10 before it is submitted for further scrutiny by the Government. A consultation event will take place in Keynsham at The Space

from 3-8pm on December 4. The document suggests land to the north of Keynsham could also accommodate a new primary school, some shops, around 50,000 square metres of employment space and a new marina. Changes to transport could include a new link between Avon Mill Road and the A4, a Metrobus service and the potential relocation of Brislington park and ride to Hicks Gate. Also within B&NES’ boundaries, Whitchurch could accommodate around 2,500 new homes as well as two new primary schools and a secondary. Meanwhile, land at Brislington – potentially freed up by relocating the park and ride – could become the site for 750 new homes, says the document. Full details on the plan and how to comment are available at www.jointplanningwofe.org.uk.

Village’s post office branch to close at Christmas after move falls through Saltford Post Office is due to close its doors two days before Christmas after plans to move the branch to McColls unexpectedly fell through last month. The branch will remain open at its current location inside Saltford Flowers at 493 Bath Road until December 23, after which the village will have no post office service. A Post Office spokesperson said the organisation is “committed” to keeping a branch in Saltford, however. Plans to relocate the post office just a few doors away to the McColls store at 503 Bath Road were revealed by Post Office in October when it launched a six-week consultation with customers. It followed the decision by the current postmaster in Saltford to end their contract to run the

The post office branch inside Saltford Flowers is due to close on December 23 branch. Before the six-week consultation was up last month, however, Post Office wrote to Saltford Parish Council to inform councillors that the operator at McColls had “decided not to progress their application to operate the branch”.

Residents will still be able to post cards and parcels during the busy festive period as an agreement was reached to keep the existing branch open at Saltford Flowers for the next few weeks. A Post Office spokesperson

said: “We are committed to providing a Post Office service in Saltford. Original plans to relocate Saltford are not proceeding as the proposed new operator decided not to progress their application. “The current postmaster agreed to keep the branch open for the time being to ensure the community had a post office at the busiest time of year. The postmaster has now decided to resign. “Unfortunately the branch is due to close at the current location on December 23. We are looking at ways to try to maintain a post office in Saltford. “The nearest alternative branches are in Corston (23 Corston Lane), Chandag (39 Chandag Road, Keynsham) and Keynsham (44 High Street).”

Shoppers warned of ‘pickpocket’ thefts

CCTV images released after purse stolen Police have released images of two women they want to speak to after an elderly woman’s purse was snatched as she shopped in Iceland in Keynsham. The victim was visiting the Temple Street store on Tuesday, October 17, at about midday when the theft occurred. A police spokesperson said: “We’re keen to speak to the two

women in these CCTV photos or anyone who might know them. Anyone with information should call 101 and quote reference 5217237214.”

From Page 1 police have issued CCTV images of two women they would like to speak to following the theft of an elderly shopper’s purse in Iceland in October (see panel). The incidents have not been linked by police. Writing in his Keynshamvoice column, PC James Evans urged readers to warn anyone they felt could become a target and said: “Keynsham High Street has been suffering with pickpocketstyle offences where vulnerable members of the public, generally elderly females, are being targeted. “Offenders have been removing purses from shopping bags both on the High Street and in the shops along it.” He said the sporadic nature of the incidents meant they were

harder for police to target and has offered a number of tips to help shoppers protect their property – see On the Beat on Page 14. Nikki Howell added that her mother had found the incident very upsetting and said: “She was shaken up at the time and nervous to go shopping on her own but she now has a new handbag which she wears across her body so it’s in front of her. “Just this morning she said, ‘I have to go out on my own, I won’t be frightened by people like this!’ “I have written to Jacob ReesMogg asking what he can do to help with regards to the fact that our town is constantly growing but the police force is shrinking – this is not acceptable.”

Best in hearing care all under one roof Hearing instrument technology has come on in leaps and bounds in the 15 years since Keynsham Hearing Centre opened its doors, says audiologist Stephen Neal. With thousands of instruments to choose from – including in-ear, on-ear and powerful behind-ear devices – there is one to suit every individual, whatever their requirements. And Keynsham Hearing Centre clients are in the right place to find that perfect match, where they can take advantage not only of Stephen’s 15 years’ experience at his Temple Street clinic but also of the expertise he developed as a technician making hearing instruments. The centre is a one-stop shop for taking care of your hearing, says Stephen, whose microsuction wax removal service is particularly popular. He’s even created a video about

the delicate process, which can be seen online at www. keynshamhearing.co.uk Inside the Temple Street shop, there is a fully equipped, sound-proofed test room where a full range of assessments can be carried out. “Many people comment on the fact that our tests are so comprehensive,” said Stephen. “Our business has grown through

Over the years, instruments have gotten smaller and can be programmed so much more accurately and we are pleased to help customers find the hearing instrument that best suits them.” Proudly independent, Keynsham Hearing Centre is also proud to be among a growing number of specialist businesses in Temple Street, each attracting customers from many miles around. However far the business’s reputation travels, it is firmly rooted in Keynsham and Stephen says he’s delighted to be able to provide care for members of the community and he and Anita wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy new year.

n NEWS Keynsham Town Council is calling for concerted action to tackle a rise in anti-social behaviour that in recent weeks has seen police called to the youth centre and holes cut in the bandstand’s roof. Following the incidents and increasing complaints from residents, the council, which runs the town’s youth service, has employed two outreach workers to work with youngsters in and around Market Walk, Queens Road and in the High Street. The issue cannot be solved by the youth service alone, the council says however, and is calling on the police, other local youth organisations and community groups, residents and businesses to discuss how to tackle anti-social behaviour in “a constructive and positive way”. Staff at Time Out youth centre on Bath Hill were forced to call police to the premises on the evening of November 14 during a drop-in session to remove around 20 youngsters who were being “aggressive and abusive”, according to a council

Council chairman Clive Fricker said: “The council wants to ensure that all young people in Keynsham have the opportunity to participate in the activities at Time Out and it is very disappointed that the behaviour of this one group impacted on the enjoyment of the rest of the young people who were participating in a rapping workshop at the time. “It is not the responsibility of our youth workers to ‘solve’ the anti-social behaviour problem in Keynsham but the town

council is mindful that the youth service is in place to help assist the authorities in tackling the problem – hence why we have initiated a pilot outreach project. However, the level of abuse our staff have been subjected to recently has been intolerable and we have a duty of care to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff and the other young people participating in youth service activities.” Regular activities are continuing at Time Out but numbers attending the drop-in

sessions will be limited for the time being, the council says. Vandalism has also escalated recently, with the bandstand repeatedly targeted as well as the tennis courts in the Memorial Park, where nets have been cut and the door handle of the hut ripped off. A football pitch at Manor Road has also been left unusable after a vehicle was driven across it, leaving deep tyre marks. ‘escalating’ anti-social behaviour in town expressed by residents and business owners in respect of an escalating level of anti-social behaviour and vandalism that started during the summer and the town council itself is also suffering from the effects. “The town council bandstand and tennis courts in Memorial Park have been subject to vandalism and littering on numerous occasions since the summer, keeping the grounds maintenance staff busy. “However, the situation has escalated recently with the bandstand roof receiving serious damage on the night of Tuesday, November 14, and football pitch number three at Manor Road is now out of use for the rest of the season owing to deep ruts created by a four-wheel vehicle being driven over it on the night of Saturday, November 11.” Dr Scott added: “The town council is looking to work with the police and other statutory

authorities, and the community including residents’ groups, traders, churches and other community organisations to develop a co-ordinated project to tackle anti-social behaviour across Keynsham in a constructive and positive way. “Residents can assist by reporting all incidents of antisocial behaviour to the police and, if safe to do so, taking pictures of the incident. We would particularly like to request Manor Road residents keep an eye out for any further vehicular activity on the football pitches. “We would also like to hear from residents who feel they are living in a particular hotspot that hasn’t already been identified as part of the outreach pilot.” The town council can be contacted on 0117 986 8683, at 15-17 Temple Street or email townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk

n NEWS Catch Santa as he visits on his sleigh Father Christmas will once again be meeting residents all over Keynsham and Saltford with help from his friends at the Lions Club. The special guest will be taking to the group’s illuminated sleigh on the evenings of December 6, 7, 8, 12 and 13 in various areas and is inviting families to come and say hello. Father Christmas will also be parking up in his sleigh at Keynsham Farmers’ Market on December 9 as well as the town’s Tesco and Waitrose store and Morrisons in Fishponds Road. Funds raised from donations during last year’s tour totalled £3,000, which helped provide school trips for children who otherwise couldn’t afford them, a barbecue for children affected by the Chernobyl disaster during a visit to Bristol and a forthcoming tea party for local elderly people. For full details of this year’s tour, see What’s On on Page 38.

Finishing touches for festival trees Community groups, schools, nurseries and local businesses are all putting the finishing touches to their Christmas trees ahead of a popular festive event. Keynsham Christmas Tree Festival returns to St John’s Church on Friday, December 8, with 60 decorated trees filling the aisles over the weekend. Live musical performances will take place throughout the three-day event, while visitors can also take a tour of the historic church’s tower and tuck into refreshments, including soup, mince pies, biscuits and hot drinks. The festival will open from 6pm to 9pm on the Friday and again from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, December 9.

The doors will open for the final day on Sunday, December 10, from noon to 5pm and there will also be a celebration service at 10.30am to which all are welcome. Entry to the festival is free but there will be a jar for donations at the exit. A tree for the foyer has been purchased with a donation from St Monica Trust and organisers have also thanked Tesco, Waitrose and Greggs for donations towards refreshments over the weekend. l Keynsham Town Council has said the Christmas tree outside St John’s Church will be back in place in time for the Christmas period after strong winds blew it over just days before the Winter Festival.

Village’s new heritage centre welcomes festive shoppers

A growing collection of artefacts that reveals Saltford’s past was once again opened to the public last month. Saltford’s new Heritage Centre was unveiled on the first floor of St Mary’s church hall in the village during Saltford Festival in June, when curators welcomed more than 250 people to look at its displays. The plan is to open the collection for special community events and it was on show again during St Mary’s Christmas Market on November 25. There are artefacts from many different periods, including Roman coins and jewellery, medieval grapeshot, Tudor bronze fastenings and spurs and musket balls from the Civil War. The Heritage Centre is a joint project between Saltford Environment Group (SEG) and

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

T

his month the team’s main focus is anti-social behaviour and the crimes that this can evolve into. During a recent training session on problemsolving we looked at crime statistics. What we were taught is that 20 per cent of the population commit 80 per cent of the crime. With that in mind, if we target our most notorious offenders this should significantly reduce crime figures and the number of people affected. We have recently been running a number of different projects within the neighbourhood beat team. As well as reviewing the crime statistics we have also been listening to the public about what is affecting everyone’s quality of life at the moment.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

keynshamvoice Speeding is always one of the top complaints and although the speed checks across Keynsham do not support that we have a speeding issue, we have secured some speed detection equipment and have been running our own speed watch. We have been out monitoring a number of locations that have been identified and educating drivers committing offences. We have also been targeting the various weight and width limits on our beat. We will be looking to run two of these a month so keep your eyes peeled for us and don’t say you haven’t been warned! We have been using plainclothed officers in and around Keynsham to monitor anti-social behaviour hotspots and target known offenders. We will be looking to continue this in the future and while most of the troublemakers know my face we have been using officers from further afield. This again is something that we will look to continue in the future. We have had a number of reports of children using catapults to cause damage – if you have any information

then please let us know via the neighbourhood pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website. Anyone carrying an item like this in a public place and comes to police notice is likely to be arrested so it’s important that people are aware of what could happen. Keynsham High Street has been suffering with pickpocketstyle offences where vulnerable members of the public, generally elderly females, are being targeted. Offenders have been removing purses from shopping bags both on the High Street and in the shops along it. Please advise anyone that you think could be targeted that a few simple things can make you less likely to be a victim. Keep shopping bags closed and secured, be aware of your surroundings and unknown people getting into your “personal space”. Keep your purse at the very bottom of your bag. Speak to staff in the shops if anyone appears to be hanging around you. The main offence times are between 10am and 12.30pm and it is believed that the offenders are working in pairs. We are looking to combat this but with very sporadic offences it’s

December, 2017 difficult to be in the right place at the right time. As autumn comes to an end, ice starts to become a problem with a few people already falling foul of the poor road conditions. Please check your vehicles – simple things like tyre tread and pressures can make a massive difference to the handling of the vehicle. Also check screen wash and wiper blades to assist with your view. Make sure you give yourself enough time to defrost the vehicle before use. It’s not acceptable to drive your vehicle when your windscreen is obscured by ice or condensation. Your screen should be clear on the surface that your wiper blades sweep. Another issue becoming more frequent is expired MOTs. Since the digitisation of the MOT recording systems, the number of vehicles being used without a valid MOT has significantly risen. Please check your vehicle on the DVLA website – with the MOT in order it will help keep your car roadworthy through the winter period. As always, if you would like to speak to any of the neighbourhood policing team, please make contact through the website.

A milestone year for Keynsham Mummers

An historic play last seen in Keynsham in the 19th century before being revived for a more modern audience in the Seventies is reaching its own special milestone. This Boxing Day will be the 40th anniversary of the Keynsham Mummers Play, which has been performed in the town every year since 1977 by the Bristol Morris Men. The performance involves an eclectic group of characters, including St George, Father Christmas, a doctor and a shepherdess, and follows the script from a play that was watched by Joseph Hunter in Keynsham in 1822. Mr Hunter obtained a transcript of what he’d seen from one of the actors – now in the British Museum, with photocopies available in Keynsham Library – which was subsequently published in the English Folk Dance and Song Society’s Journal of December

Bristol Morris Men in past performances of Keynsham Mummers Play 1947. Thirty years later, the Keynsham and District Arts Society decided to revive the play but struggled to get full attendance at rehearsals, leading to an appeal on Radio Bristol. Responding to the plea, Bristol Morris Men contacted the society’s Bunty Dunford, who “jumped at the chance of it being revived”. Ever since, the morris dancers have performed the play on Boxing Day outside St John’s

Church, before repeating it at the clock tower and then at the New Inn. This year will be no different, with performances at St John’s at 11am, at the clock tower at 11.30am and the New Inn at noon on Boxing Day. Three of this year’s cast were in the first performance in 1977 while two of them (playing the Slasher and the Doctor) have taken part every single year. A spokesperson for Bristol Morris Men said: “The play needs the boisterous interpretation and ad-libbing by the performers. The ending is open to a lot of interpretation as the play, as collected, has no neat ending and so each year much discussion goes on as to how it should end. “Whatever the history, the play seems established as part of Keynsham’s Christmas scene.” Find out more at www. bristolmorrismen.co.uk

Rotarians honour ‘Young Citizen’ Dani

A Keynsham teenager who has helped to give young people a greater voice in the town has been named the winner of the Rotary Club of Keynsham’s Young Citizen Award. Dani Phillips, the chair of KeynshamNow youth council, was presented with a medal, framed citation, the YCA cup and £50 for a charity of her choice by Rotary district governor Alan Hudson at a meeting of the club. The award celebrates young people aged between 10 and 18 who spend time volunteering, working in the local community or caring for others – and Dani ticked all the boxes, the club said. As well as being a member of KeynshamNow for several years, a role that sees her address the town council and other meetings to share young people’s views, she also works with the autism charity Butterflies-Haven and raises money for other good causes, including Clic Sargent. A spokesperson said: “Our Rotary club had no hesitation in selecting her as the winner of our Young Citizen Award. Congratulations to Dani.”

It’s question time for town’s MP Keynsham’s youth councillors were given a special insight into life as a Member of Parliament when Jacob Rees-Mogg joined them for a question and answer session at Time Out. The North East Somerset MP’s visit to meet KeynshamNow on November 18 coincided with UK Parliament Week, which aims to promote the country’s parliamentary democracy. The young members of KeynshamNow posed a wide range of questions, with Mr ReesMogg speaking on subjects from fox hunting, Brexit and abortion to voting rights for 16-year-olds, the school curriculum and his chances of becoming Prime Minister. KeynshamNow chair Dani

Phillips said she thought the chance to talk to the MP helped the young people there understand more about the working of our parliamentary

system and, while she didn’t agree with all of Mr Rees-Mogg’s views, she was grateful he had given up a Saturday afternoon to meet them. Andy Wait, lead mentor of KeynshamNow, said: “When given more time than he is usually allowed in the media, it is clear that Jacob’s views are well thought out. The young people were encouraged by his recognition of the illogicality of age restrictions, particularly when it comes to voting at 16.” Asking the young councillors about their aspirations for the future, Mr Rees-Mogg said he was encouraged by the number of future physicists in the room and encouraged each member not to give up on their dreams.

Dancers tackle tapathon record

Dancers as young as three pulled on their tap shoes to join thousands of others across Britain in a world record attempt. Keyford Dance School once

again took part in a nationwide tapathon, aiming to break the record for the largest simultaneous tap dance set 15 years ago and raise money for BBC Children in Need at the same time. Joined by members of Timsbury’s Avon Dance

Academy, in total 55 dancers tapped their way through a routine set to Faith by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande at Keynsham’s River Suite on Sunday, November 19. The numbers could make all the difference to breaking the record of 7,596 dancers as last

year’s attempt fell short by just 100 people. Dancers raised money for Children in Need by buying T-shirts to wear during the tapathon, while a cake sale after the performance made an extra £134. They are pictured above with their certificates.

Village primary is rated ‘outstanding’ Staff, pupils and governors at Saltford C of E Primary are celebrating after the school was judged “outstanding” in a recent inspection. Church school inspectors from SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) visited on November 2 before publishing a report that head teacher Dawn Elliot said had “delighted” everyone involved with the school. The report said: “The vision for Saltford is: ‘A vibrant, caring and supportive church school, inspiring and serving the whole community.’ This vision is successfully lived out. “Core values of kindness, respect and honesty permeate the work of the school.” School leaders and governors were praised, too, with inspectors

saying: “Leaders and governors have worked collaboratively to formulate and articulate values for the school that reflect the Christian vision of being a vibrant and caring church school, inspiring and serving the whole community.” Pupils, meanwhile, showed “exemplary behaviour and focus” and told inspectors that collective worship at the school enabled them “to think and pray about things that are important”. Miss Elliott said: “As a school community, we are delighted with the outcome of this SIAMS inspection and have noted with pleasure the fact that the reports celebrate our school’s distinctive ethos, vision and values, which have been central to our continued success.”

All funds raised will go directly to support the fantastic Scouting activities that are supplied by our leader team. Thank you so much.” The annual Scout auction continues to be a major fundraiser involving the whole community so why not put next year’s date – Saturday, November 17 - in your diary.

Could you make a difference? Do you think that Scouting is all knobbly knees, big hats and woggles? Did you know that

Scouting has been growing for the last five years and that most people are no more than a mile from their nearest Scout HQ? Did you also know that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were both Scouts (inspiring a better quality of campfire song)? Could you inspire a young person? To quote Chief Scout Bear Grylls: “Every

child has the right to an adventure. Life is about grabbing opportunities. The prizes don’t always go to the biggest, the best and the strongest – they go to those who persevere. These are simple life lessons that Scouting teaches.” For Keynsham Scouts to deliver for the young people, they need adults. It’s easy to

make excuses such as “I don’t have the time”, “I work away”, “I don’t see the family as it is”, “I’m too old” or even “What have I got to offer?” Keynsham Scouts would welcome the opportunity to demonstrate that that by volunteering you could blow away the myths and realise that excuses are really blockers to improving your life, your family’s lives and other young people’s. We have uniform opportunities supporting our young people in all sections, from Beavers to Explorers, plus we have non-uniform opportunities, such as in maintenance, fundraising and communication. We also offer flexibility to get around shift work and other commitments. Start the ball rolling by emailing scouts@1st keynshamscouts.org.uk and ask what you could do – you might just get a surprise.

Clare Pollock was the overall winner for her wonderful Daisy Daisythemed bike, Castle Primary School was runner-up and the residents of Abbeyfield Keynsham were voted as having the third most popular bike. Our completed bike trail leaflet winner was Chloe Ashbee, whose form was drawn from among the hundreds of completed trail forms we received. Somerdale Pavilion kindly donated a three-month gym membership as first prize.

continuing struggle to find volunteers to help with activities. So, over the next few weeks we will be embarking on a recruitment campaign and asking anyone who would like to be involved with Keynsham in Bloom to contact us.

I would stress it’s not just about gardening. There are a number of activities you can get involved in – do you have social media and marketing skills? Would you like to be involved in a community art project? Do you have graphic design skills? If so, we are always in need of someone to design posters and leaflets. Are you familiar with fundraising and funding applications, or do you like to project manage? If any of these tasks appeal to you then please get in touch. We have some exciting projects planned for next year and would like to focus on community art as well as horticulture. You can contact me through our Keynsham in Bloom Community Group Facebook page or pop your contact details into the town council office at 15-17 Temple Street. I’m always happy to meet up and discuss how you can volunteer to make a difference to our town.

Record result for annual shoebox appeal A record number of gifts are making their way from Keynsham to brighten up Christmas for under-privileged youngsters in Romania this year. Community groups, schools, nurseries and Guides are among those who have helped Keynsham Elim Church collect a staggering 1,001 shoeboxes filled with presents and essentials. The gift-wrapped boxes are now being driven 1,300 miles to the city of Oradea where staff and volunteers from the church will be joining the charity CASA Grace from December 7 to help install water supplies, provide food aid and essentials and hand out the shoeboxes to local children. It’s the seventh year the church has worked with the charity and a spokesperson said: “Without these donations, many of these children would not otherwise receive a single present. “The shoebox delivery roughly coincides with St Nicholas Day; the day which Romanians

traditionally give Christmas presents.” The church has thanked every individual and all the organisations that have taken the time to donate shoeboxes, including Close Farm GP Surgery, practice nurses at Kingswood Health Centre, 3rd Weston-super-Mare Brownies, Red Bus Nursery and Pre-school in Downend, the ENT Department at the BRI, Culverhill School, in Yate, Charfield Fellowship and Wickwar Fellowship. The spokesperson added: “Thank you to everyone that has made a shoebox this year – every single shoebox opened will bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas.”

Junction scheme a missed opportunity

LETTERS n Following her mum’s experience of crime on Keynsham High Street, as we report on Page 8, Nikki Howell – who writes as the Keynsham Poet – says the recent events have inspired her to raise her concerns in the following poem.

There was an interesting article in last month’s Keynshamvoice giving the history of a local landmark, the Two-Headed Man junction (by Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society) . The major roadworks at the junction are all very fine, I’m sure, but where is the advantage to the motorist!

Pressure Cooker of Crime I’ve lived in Keynsham For most of my life As a child, a teenager And now mother and wife But this town is much bigger Than it was before There are lots of new houses And still they build more

This is the motorist that is stuck in mile-long queues at peak times in three directions, waiting for the lights to change. Surely with all of this planning, purchasing farmland and preparation, these major operations must have taken huge resources. What was wrong with installing a large roundabout of the type at Newton-St-Loe to increase traffic flow and benefit the hard-pressed motorist? There was certainly enough space. This looks like a missed opportunity at the very least. Some would call it a complete waste of money! Allan Peters

The population increases Time after time And with the increase in people We see an increase in crime We contact the police As our only hope But with all of the cutbacks They just cannot cope So criminals continue To break in, mug and steal Vandalise property They can do what they will No police to arrest them No deterrent to stop This pressure cooker of crime Is about ready to pop A town full of anarchy And lots of sad folk We need action now It’s gone way past a joke! KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Secret underground cities

Last month’s meeting of the society heard an enthralling account of the discovery and exploration of a hidden world only a few miles from Keynsham. The speaker was Nick McCamley, who as a youth stumbled across the recently abandoned site of the WWII Central Ammunition Store at Monkton Farleigh. In the former stone mines he found working cranes, conveyor belts, lighting and ventilation systems. His adventure triggered a lifelong interest in secret stores and military bunkers and after much research and exploration Nick is now an expert on the construction and history of these vast establishments. Having described the underground roads, railways and conveyors of the ammunition stores the story moved on to the later construction of a vast underground factory for manufacturing aero engines in Spring Quarry at Corsham. Despite the huge cost, this was not a success, but during the 1950s became the location of the Government’s Emergency War Headquarters, codenamed “Burlington”. It covered 35 acres, had 60 miles of roadways and would have accommodated over 4,000 staff in the event of nuclear war. Its existence remained a secret for 60 years. Now decommissioned, it remains largely as it was and Nick’s many photographs gave glimpses of the huge telephone exchange, the kitchens, offices and stores holding domestic and office equipment, still wrapped and ready to be unpacked and used. It was an amazing story and a memorable evening!

Images from Burlington, which became the Government’s Emergency War Headquarters during the 1950s

The Pynes in March 1966

Do you remember The Pynes?

A walk down Dapps Hill takes you past an entrance to the park with a large stone gatepost, made distinctive by the built-in guard stone at its base, to prevent damage from carts or coaches. This is all that remains of The Pynes, once a good-sized house that stood on the slope overlooking the River Chew. It is believed that it may have been built as early as the 1750s and included a coachhouse with cottage. At one time attractive gardens, populated by

peacocks, led down to the river. The coach house/cottage was situated a little further up the hill. It is easy to see where this was, as instead of a stone wall the boundary at the edge of the pavement is a length of wooden fence erected after the cottage was demolished. A map of 1883 shows the property named as Grove Cottage but recent memories have it as The Pynes, sometimes spelt Pines. It appears that during the late 1950s the house became too much for its owners to keep up. When it became empty it was not sold and became overgrown as shown in the picture. Eventually the council bought the land to incorporate into the Memorial Park and the properties were demolished early in the 1970s.

Keynsham Abbey

The society’s next Monday evening talk is on December 11.

Archaeologist Verity Anthony will be speaking about the largest and finest building that has ever existed in Keynsham; the Abbey Church. Sadly there is now almost nothing to see of this magnificent structure and the rest of the complex; when it was dissolved in 1539 not only the buildings but the community of priests and lay brothers that had dominated life in the area disappeared for ever. The meeting will be at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. A limited number of seats will be available for visitors. CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Have yourself a sustainable Christmas

I

t’s December, and Christmas is on everyone’s mind. There are presents to buy, meals to plan and the tree to decorate. But with the average Briton generating 30% more waste over the Christmas period, how do we make sure our environment benefits from the festivities as much as we do? According to recent estimates, 227,000 miles of wrapping paper is thrown away rather than recycled every Christmas – enough to circle the equator nine times. And foil backed wrapping paper can’t be recycled at all. Instead, how about wrapping presents with newsprint?

It looks surprisingly good. And if you’ve got kids, why not spend a happy couple of hours printing green Christmas trees, red Santa hats and yellow stars on the newspaper sheets? We discard 250 tonnes of Christmas trees every year which could have been used for compost. So, get familiar with B&NES’ Christmas tree collection (and

don’t forget to cut the tree up if it’s a big one). Or better yet, buy a living Christmas tree, leave it in the garden over the year and bring it in at Christmas. Approximately two million turkeys, 74 million mince pies and 17.2 million Brussels sprouts are thrown away every Christmas. To reduce food waste, meal plan and only buy what you need. Avoid the BOGOFs! If you do have leftovers, they can almost certainly be frozen for eating later. Check out the Love Food Hate Waste website for some great leftover recipes. Research in 2015 suggested the average family spends between £300 and £500 on presents at Christmas. That budget could be cut considerably, and help others

at the same time, by buying from charity shops. Just £10 would buy you a whole pile of novels for your book-loving friend or relative. There are masses of other bargains in charity shops, too, from kids’ toys to DVDs, from clothes to jewellery. And for the person who really does have everything? Why not donate the money to someone who needs it instead? Loads of charities offer “virtual” gifts, including Oxfam and Save the Children. Your money will buy mosquito nets, a school bag kit, or even a couple of goats. It really is easy to have a sustainable Christmas. Why not challenge yourself to make a small switch this festive season, and care for the planet as well as people?

Charity’s the winner after tough quiz night! More than 75 people put their grey matter to the test in what some called “the hardest quiz in the world” last month, to raise money for Keynsham Mencap. Teams gathered at Scout HQ on November 11, with The Hopefuls eventually taking top prize – which they promptly donated back to the charity to help raise more funds in future. The evening, overseen by quiz master Kit Kettel, included a mini bingo game with caller and Mencap ambassador William

Marsh, while a raffle included prizes donated by businesses including Reflections, Pure Beauty, Sainsbury’s, Simply Carpets, Pomegranate, 73 Degrees, Tesco, Bonzo Lounge and Booker. All in all, the evening raised more than £800, which will go towards providing activities for local people affected by learning disabilities. To find out more about the charity’s events and how to get involved, email info@ keynshamencap.org.uk

Food that’s good for people and planet? Is it possible to choose a diet that’s good for our health, protects the environment and helps prevent climate change? Patrick Holden, chief executive of the Sustainable Food Trust, organic farmer and former director of the Soil Association will be speaking at The Space in Keynsham on Wednesday, December 6, at 7pm, to try to

answer this question. Patrick, an internationally sought-after speaker, will also be joined by the MD of the Chew Valleybased Community Farm, which provides organic vegetables across Bristol and Keynsham. The talk will be followed by a Fairtrade drinks reception, provided by Keynsham Fairtrade. Local retailer G&D will provide

nibbles, as well as a number of other local food producers and retailers. Tickets are £5.50 (£1 for under-18s), available from https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk The event has been organised by community groups working together to help make Keynsham an even better place to live and work. They include Keynsham

Action network, Keynsham Wombles, Transition Keynsham, Live Simply, Eco Church, Saltford Environment Group, Keynsham Community Energy and Keynsham Food Co-Op. The initiative is supported by UWE Bristol’s Self City project, which is researching what motivates people to be active in the face of climate change.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Merry Christmas and a happy new year from all at Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Unquiet Spirits by Bonnie Macbird This book is the second Holmes and Watson thriller by Bonnie Macbird. She set the bar high with her first book, Art in the Blood, and this continues the high standard and should satisfy any keen Sherlockian. The plot moves at pace from the balmy South of France to the bleak Highlands of Scotland as Holmes and Watson try to solve the mystery of a missing Scottish maid at the haunted McLaren castle and how this somehow links to a parasite which is threatening the French wine harvest. Along the way they encounter terrifying spirits, grisly murders and family strife at the heart of a Scottish whisky dynasty. Mycroft makes an appearance and enlists Holmes’ expertise in solving an apparent espionage plot that could severely damage Franco-British relations. The action intensifies as the intrepid duo again cross swords with their old sparring partner, the charming but deadly French investigator Jean Vidocq. There are even tantalising details of Holmes’ first romance and how his experiences at school and university came to influence the man he became. The book speeds along from location to location and is thoroughly entertaining and an ideal read sitting in front of a glowing fire with a glass of something warming on a cold

winter night. Look out for the next book in the series, The Devil’s Due. It’s a Wonderful Life by Julia Williams For the festive season, here is another book to cosy up to with a large cup of hot chocolate. Beth was driving home for Christmas, appearing to be the woman who has everything – the children, the house and the career. However, when the new year comes, she cannot help thinking about her old college boyfriend. Next we meet Lou, Beth’s sister, who is the opposite. Just out of a relationship that she didn’t break off, she can’t help but be a bit jealous of her sister’s success. However, is everything all rosy in Beth’s life? A heart-warming tale about the life choices people make and what happens when you start to question them.

Adult Non-Fiction

The Virgin Mary’s Got Nits: A Christmas Anthology by Gervase Phinn “This morning, children, we have a special visitor in the school. He is sitting at the back of the hall. His name is Mr Leatherboy and he’s a school inspector… to watch… our nativity play.” And so begins a very funny poem about Mr Leatherboy’s visit and the school play. This is an anthology of verse, prose and memoir from the author Gervase Phinn, writer of The Little Village School series and includes stories from his own life as a teacher.

So with his usual warmth and light-hearted wit this selection is a real treat for all of us who have witnessed small children, nativity play nerves and the joy and excitement that is Christmas. Gluten-Free Christmas by Hannah Miles Just because someone has an allergy to wheat or is a coeliac does not mean that they cannot enjoy some delicious pastries or desserts during the Christmas season. Hannah Miles has devised some traditional feasts that no one will notice is gluten-free. They range from mince pies with pistachio mincemeat; chestnut forcemeat stuffing balls and even a gluten-free traditional Great Grandma’s Christmas pudding. All the recipes look mouthwatering – my particular favourite is the chocolate log and the author also shows a good selection of sauces and gravies. Enjoy!

Children’s Fiction

Snowflake In My Pocket by Rachel Bright, illustrated by Yu Rong With the winter upon us, it is time to curl up under covers to read a book to our little ones. This lovely picture book presents a young squirrel who has just discovered three seasons and hasn’t met winter yet. It is a lovely book about changing seasons and the excitement that comes with the first time. Now I can’t wait for a hot chocolate and am staring

at the window looking for some snowflakes. Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant The Christmas Fairy by Ann Booth and Rosalind Beardshaw Clara was very talkative. She was, after all, a fairy, full of fun and loved to sing and dance and bring a smile to everyone she met. But Clara’s dream is to become THE Christmas fairy. This is not as easy as it looks, as she is always so excited. Read about Clara in the Christmas show and see if Father Christmas will give Clara the gift she always wanted. A real Christmas delight!

‘Kindness’ goody bags a bright idea A group of volunteers brought an unexpected ray of sunshine to a cold November day in honour of World Kindness Day. Supporters of the Kind Keynsham initiative, which aims to promote acts of kindness to bring the community closer, handed out 250 goody bags in the High Street on November 13. The gifts were all in the group’s trademark bright yellow, including bananas and daffodil bulbs. The bags also contained a pebble for recipients to decorate with a kind message and leave somewhere in town, inspired by the successful Bristol Rocks project. The goody bag also contained information about a “suspended coffee” scheme, where people can pay for an extra coffee in advance at a local café to benefit another customer. Grounded, Pomegranate and Temple Street Canteen are all taking part. Find out more about the Kind Keynsham project at www.facebook.com/kindkeynsham

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

D

espite a rather dull and chilly November Sunday morning more than 20 of us were dropped off by our transport opposite the viaduct in Pensford, which was built as part of the Bristol and North Somerset Railway in the 19th century. We headed off downhill to the popular summer picnic spot on the river Chew and past Pensford Church with its 15th-century

tower. By this time we realised that mud was the order of the day but no one was deterred and walking poles and arms were shared! After passing through Woollard there were some lovely views over the countryside and the sun came out and we were abandoning our hats and scarves as we descended through the woods towards our refreshment stop at the Compton Inn.

A leisurely walk then led a happy group of walkers back along the river Chew to Keynsham just in time for a late lunch. Date for the diary December 9 Keynsham Walkers are Welcome’s annual festive wreath-making walk, including mulled wine and mince pies. Starting at 10am from the Memorial Park café.

Church unveils new facilities to community with open day A Keynsham church has unveiled new facilities for the many groups that use its premises and to help meet the needs of the town’s growing population. The entrance to Queens Road Methodist Church has been completely redesigned, adding new toilets and a small kitchen area to allow wider use of the building. The revamp now means that groups can meet in the church while others use the hall or side rooms. The project was led by the church property team, who worked with Ian Cox of Watson, Bertram and Fell Architects of Bath. After months of planning and construction work, the refurbishment was unveiled at the end of October. Minister Rev Jane Wilson, pictured with Terry Chamberlain of builders T L Chamberlain and Sons and

Minister Rev Jane Wilson with Terry Chamberlain of builders T L Chamberlain & Sons and Mike Windsor, KMC property steward Mike Windsor, KMC’s property steward, said: “We’re delighted to be able to open our refurbished premises, the culmination of months of work by a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers, which began with a vision to create a space which we hope will be an amenity for the whole community.”

A box of doughnuts was handed to Terry as a token of thanks to share with his team of builders. Members of the local community were invited to an open afternoon with tea and cake to look around the new premises. Nursery given £250 for its ‘mud kitchen’ A nursery that will open its doors in Keynsham in the new year has received a £250 donation towards its plan to create a garden in its grounds. Broadlands Bears Nursery, based at Broadlands Academy, is opening on January 2 and will use the cash from developer Taylor Wimpey to buy gardening equipment for the project, which will be used by the youngsters. Charlotte Miller, nursery manager at Broadlands Bears Nursery, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Taylor Wimpey for this donation, which will go towards setting up a mud kitchen area in our garden, so the children can get really messy while exploring different types of textures and using imaginative play. It’s a bit different having a nursery on the site of a secondary school, but it comes with several benefits like having specialist teachers on site to help with things like science experiments or art projects.”

TV star Tony Robinson reveals surprising hidden history of Bristol in unique film replica of John Cabot’s tiny ship in which he discovered Newfoundland, sails down the River Avon, out into the open sea for the very first time. In this revealing investigation of Bristol’s history, Tony Robinson also delves into the slave trade when he visits Henbury Churchyard, in search of the grave of Scipio Africanus, a young slave brought to the city. This unique film is also crammed full of entertaining nuggets of history, including the story of the great paddle steamers, which took Victorians from Bristol to Clevedon on “grand days out”. Recently rediscovered by the award-winning Bristol documentary company Focus Productions, this film has been beautifully restored by editors and technicians at one of the city’s top TV post-production houses, Evolutions Bristol. Sir Tony Robinson’s Famed History of Bristol is available from Waterstones, The Galleries, Bristol and selected retailers for £9.99. Walk on history with Sir Tony Robinson as he shows you around the extraordinary city of Bristol.

Join Sir Tony on board The SS Great Britain, on the summit of The Cabot Tower, inside St Mary Redcliffe Church (so beloved by Baldrick’s friend, Queenie), deep underground in The Redcliffe Caves, at The Hotwells Spa, inside The Clifton Rocks Railway, on Brunel’s Great Suspension Bridge and at sea on The Matthew. Let Sir Tony help you discover the most shocking, curious and surprising facts about The Bristol Docks, the secret tunnels and rivers under the city, the origin of Robinson Crusoe & Treasure Island, the sinful public houses, the sad story of Scipio Africanus & the shameful Slave Trade, Sir Samuel Plimsoll, Bristol’s great Paddle Steamers and much more. Sir Tony Robinson’s famed History of Bristol

The star of TV’s Blackadder and Time Team, Sir Tony Robinson, reveals many of Bristol’s hidden historical secrets in a new DVD released this week. Director of the film, St Andrew’s resident Martin Weitz, says it is an extraordinary record of Bristol’s amazing history, capturing rare images of the city which simply could not be filmed nowadays; including access to the secret tunnels and rivers under the city centre and a scene shot inside the pump room of the 18th-century Hotwells Spa. The film captures Tony’s passion for history combined with his great sense of humour – for example when he goes on board the ss Great Britain, he gives a highly entertaining recitation of an historic poem about a rolypoly pudding in pure Blackadder style. There’s a literally breathtaking ascent to the top of the Cabot Tower and an eyeopening visit to St Mary Redcliffe Church where he meets up with his alter ego Baldrick’s “old friend Queenie”. The film also recaptures the highly moving occasion when the Matthew, the Bristol-built

THE BIG PICTURE

Film review with Harrison Thorne

Justice League (12A) ver two years since Henry Cavill stepped into the boots of Christopher Reeve in Man of Steel (2013), DC have united their characters in their answer to Marvel’s Avengers Assemble (2012). Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) lead a team of amateur heroes into battle with the villainous Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) while the world mourns for the death of their idol, Superman. Affleck once again shines as Batman, giving a performance that reminds us that this version of the character is old, tired and yet still carries a sense of hope that Affleck conveys so brilliantly. Gadot is another standout continuing on from her brilliant lead role in

Film doesn’t quite do superhero league justice

Wonder Woman as a character that is just coming to grips with her faith in humanity. I was particularly interested in seeing the character of The Flash brought to the big screen for the first time; Ezra Miller gives a comedic and playful yet sometimes deadly serious performance that differs from Grant Gustin’s portrayal on The Flash (Sky One). I was, however, disappointed with the way the character was written, with him constantly stumbling and making stupid mistakes rather than

being an actual hero. The VFX team deserves a lot of credit, however, as the way The Flash’s running is visualised is something special. The plethora of reshoots, rewrites, recasting and even a switch in director has left an unmistakable effect of incompletion on the film with obvious changes in tone throughout and some dialogue that feels completely out of place. A director’s cut showing the film as Zack Snyder envisioned it could improve the film a lot. In conclusion, Justice League is a decent action film with well realised characters and some good performances but is unfortunately plagued with issues such as poor pacing, inconsistent tone, a clichéd villain and some weak CGI.  3/5

Join a merry market! Christmas is coming to Keynsham Farmers’ Market this month with plenty of seasonal produce and gift-buying opportunities, whether it’s local wine from Fenny Castle Vineyard or a whole Bath Soft Cheese. The final market of the year will open at 9am on Saturday, December 9, with a growing artisan section offering crafts including jewellery, stone ornaments and, this month, fused glass designs. Food will still take centre stage, say organisers, who each month have been introducing a new local producer. A spokesperson said: “The Instow Kitchen and Moist have been particularly well received with their vegetarian and hummus selection alongside more traditional meats, cheeses, fish and vegetables.” Find out more at www.somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Emma King, Keynsham Parish children and families worker

The perfect Christmas gift

W

hat is your perfect Christmas gift? A new iPad? A diamond ring? The latest toy? Or even that knitted jumper that your grandma knits you every Christmas? Christmas, for many people, is a happy, fun time of year filled with excitement and magic. But for some people, this isn’t always the case; Christmas can be filled with worry, hurt, memories and upset. Working with children and families alongside Ria Harding, our youth worker, and all the the volunteers involved, we are constantly reminded of how

keynshamvoice n NEWS

different people’s lives can be, and how divided our world is. But do we have to be divided? Children are born innocent and it’s only as they grow, the influences around them change those innocent minds and divide us. Even when we take our children to see a Disney film, the worlds between the good and the bad are so divided, but after a lot of upset, the good always wins after all. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the world we live in were the same? At Christmas time we invest so much effort into material things, so why not invest as much all year round into our children and young people’s lives. Ria and I have a vision for new beginnings in Keynsham Parish, that we will become a place where our children and young people have a voice and will grow and flourish and start to make a difference for their own future as well as the future of others. Our children and young people are, with all of our help, the ones who will soften the hearts and minds of those around them and make our world a brighter place.

Shoppers’ votes see hospice given £617 A local hospice has received a donation of hundreds of pounds thanks to votes from shoppers at a Keynsham supermarket. Rob Stewart, a volunteer for Dorothy House Hospice, visited Waitrose to collect a cheque for £617 on behalf of the Bath-based charity, which provides end-oflife care to patients and support for their families. As part of Waitrose’s monthly

Community Matters scheme, £1,000 was split between Dorothy House and two other good causes after shoppers cast votes during August using green tokens given to them at the checkout. A Waitrose spokesperson said: “Our customers were keen to support the hospice and their tokens generated an amazing £617 donation from Waitrose.”

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field A busy November saw Keynsham Town FC’s First Team record three wins and three draws to move them into pole position in the Toolstation Western League Division One.

The Ks visited Ashton & Backwell United on a mild Tuesday evening and came away from the Lancer Scott Stadium with a 3-2 victory. Leading scorer Matt Brown put Keynsham ahead with a neat near-post finish on nine minutes, before Kyle Box made it 2-0 with a fine drive from 20 yards. The hosts pulled a goal back in the 44th minute, only

for Keynsham to go down the other end and restore their twogoal lead with a blistering shot from James Batchelor. An early second-half goal from a corner reduced their lead, but despite a few nervy moments, they clung on to claim all three points. Another away trip followed, but Keynsham failed to capitalise on an early Cameron Shorney goal to draw 1-1 at Chard Town. A bumper crowd of 336 then packed into Crown Fields for the Somerset Premier Cup tie against Bath City, who ply their trade four divisions above the Ks. It was a close game, with the decisive goal coming from a corner inside the last 20 minutes. Club secretary Julian French said: “I would like to feel that the visiting Bath fans left with a good impression of our club, and hopefully some may return for future Ks matches.” Manager John Allen added: “I must say how proud we were of the lads after this narrow defeat against a National League side who were virtually at full strength. We had a game plan

October’s Player of the Month Jason Adams in action against Radstock and it nearly came off but for two great saves from a certain England U20 World Cup winner in goal for Bath. The lads showed fantastic discipline and concentration and were certainly motivated by the big crowd.” The pitch conditions for the next two away games were akin to the World War I battlefields! Firstly they visited Wincanton Town and, despite having more possession than their hosts in the first half, they trailed to a well-taken goal in the 12th minute. The Ks came storming

out after the interval, with James Batchelor equalising immediately and Matt Long putting them in front on 52 minutes. They had chances to sew up the game, but had to defend stoicly to secure the 2-1 victory. A week later saw a trip to Malmesbury Victoria, where conditions were even worse! This game had everything, with two cool finishes by the Ks’ Craig Wilson, a screamer into the top corner from Matt Curnock and a goal by Malmesbury’s keeper! All in all, a draw was a fair result and

n SPORT it was another good point on the road for Keynsham. Then it was back to Crown Fields for the last two games of the month. The night of November 21 saw a sharing of the spoils in a top-of-the-table clash at home to Westbury United, which ended 1-1. The Ks’ management was forced to reshuffle the pack with players being unavailable, although Sam Duggan returned to the squad after suspension. The visitors stunned Keynsham with a goal in only the second minute, but the Ks recovered well, with Matt Long grabbing the equaliser on the half hour. The second half was nowhere near as entertaining, as two good teams cancelled each other out. Four days later, Keynsham went goal crazy in their final game of November, as they thumped Warminster Town 7-2. There were braces for Matt Brown, Kyle Box and Craig Wilson, taking the combined tally for those three players for the season to an impressive 33 goals. Substitute Adey Harvey

grabbed the seventh with his first goal of the campaign, and with Westbury United losing, the Ks were propelled to the top of the table for the first time this season come 4.45pm. Off the pitch, Jason Adams won the club’s October Player of the Month Award. The management team said: “We all felt his consistent performances throughout the month, especially against Devizes, Bristol Telephones and Ashton & Backwell, just gave him the edge over the other players. As the captain, he leads by example on the pitch and never misses a training session. He also makes sure all the lads pay their fines to keep the tour kitty topped up! “But to be honest, we had a lot of good performances in October across the squad. Kyle Box scored four goals in five games; Matt Curnock, after being out of the side for a while, came back in and grew in stature game by game; and Tauren Williams is now finding his form of last season. However, all the lads know that they can only perform

like this when all the team are pulling together and playing for each other.” When asked about the season so far, club secretary Julian French said: “I must mention how well all our four senior sides are doing this season. As well as the First Team sitting proudly in first position, our Reserves are sixth in the Somerset County League and through to the Somerset Senior Cup Quarter Finals, the A Team are riding high at the top of Bristol &

Suburban League Division 2 and are still in the League Cup (which we won last season), while our Under-18s are fourth in the Somerset Floodlit Youth League and through to their League Cup Quarter Finals. “Our home attendances have also been gratifying, which goes to show that local people are starting to take notice of our community football club. This goes to show that we are all working together to push this great club forward.”

The Ks’ forthcoming home games are as follows:

Portishead Town (First XI) 3pm kick-off

Keynsham Rugby slip down the table There are three Keynsham Rugby games to report since the November issue, resulting in two away losses and a narrow home win, seeing the local side slide a couple of places down the Tribute South West 1 League, writes our correspondent. Playing against a very strong down-field wind at Bridgwater in the first half, Keynsham’s defence was tested from an early stage by the home side. Despite only being able to make occasional forays into Bridgy’s half, 30 minutes passed before Keynsham’s line was breached, and then probably only as they were temporarily down to 14 men. Arron Kelly forced himself over the line from short range and the conversion was added by their captain Stuart Heal. An unconverted try by potent full-back Will Munroe soon followed and the same man created a try for winger Ryan Bartlett, which, converted by Heal, left the score at 19-0. A

very protracted first half (55 minutes!) was brought to an end with a try for Brad Newton converted by Sam Challenger, bringing the score to 19-7. Josh Hughes had replaced Dan Moody after 25 minutes, Moody having injured his shoulder. Signs were good with early

pressure in the second half, but a wonderful try was conjured up by the home side. A counter attack saw them sweep both sides of the pitch and cover fully 75 metres ending in a try for Kyran Devitt, duly converted by Heal – bonus point secure and a 26-7 lead. Oakley Goodland

and Darren Uren joined the fray at this point, as Jack Weston and Matt Coghlan retired. John Pearce gave the Black and Ambers renewed hope, sniping his way over the whitewash, and again Challenger added the extra points. Bridgwater added a fifth try through Luke Plummer, Heal

with away defeats inexplicably missing a simple conversion to bring it to 31-14. Keynsham exerted significant pressure on the home defence in the closing 10 minutes but, despite a yellow card followed by uncontested scrums, were unable to close the gap any further. So, back down to earth with a bump. Keynsham were not outclassed but could not cope with the eight changes from last week’s squad. They had the edge in the set pieces but the home team were far slicker with their ball handing from one to 15. Next up was a home game against the team second from bottom of the league, Clevedon. With a performance far exceeding their lowly league position they pushed Keynsham all the way. Keynsham led 12-0 and then 19-12 at half time, but in the end, they had to hang on grimly for a squeaky win, 19-17. Clevedon were worth more than just the one losing bonus point they left the Crown Field with. It was down the M5 to Cullompton next. What threatened to be a very rainy day turned out to be pleasant after the warm-up and players only had to compensate for a wet ball and slightly greasy underfoot conditions. Consequently, both sides were willing to play expansive rugby. As it transpired, defences won the upper hand with Keynsham’s getting the main kudos. Keynsham got off to an early lead through a penalty from Sam Challenger. Thereafter play moved backwards and forwards but neither team could capitalise on the chances

that were created. Cullompton equalised seven minutes short of half time from a penalty so the half ended 3-3; two very evenly matched sides putting a lot of effort in. Notably for the visitors Oakley Goodland won several turnovers and Rueben Edwards put in innumerable tackles. Eleven minutes into the second half Sam Challenger put Keynsham back into the lead with his second penalty. Six minutes later a rare missed tackle saw home skipper Sean Mardell make a severe breach in Keynsham’s defences; there were umpteen phases close to the line and eventually skipper Mardell squeezed over for the first try of the game. Pearce made it 10-6 with the conversion. Shortly thereafter Cullumpton spilt a ball on the half-way line, which was seized upon by the ever-lively Brad Newton. He fed Weston, who linked twice with Gareth Bradnock, who fed the supporting wing Rob Breckon. Breckon then just beat the cover defence to dive in for an unconverted try near the corner – 10-11. A try by home prop John Snell converted by Pearce made it 17-11 and any hopes of a losing bonus were dashed by a further try by Chris Grant, converted by Pearce – 24-11. Keynsham now lie eighth in the league with 24 points. Upcoming home games The next games at the Crown Field are December 9 – 1st XV against Thornbury; December 16 – 1st XV against Matson; January 1 – 2nds V Bristol Barbarians.

New lights put spotlight on The PA Trust Keynsham Rugby Club has been awarded £54,000 to install new floodlights at its grounds, as part of a drive to encourage more people to get involved in the sport. The club has been chosen by the Rugby Football Union to become a Legacy Centre to help the sport grow at community level and was given a grant by the organisation to enhance the facilities to benefit players and visitors. John Hibbitt, club president, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the grant, which will greatly improve the already first-class facilities at our club. Keynsham as a town is growing fast and we want to be ready to expand our community activities and promote the great game of rugby football. We are working hard to secure the rest of the money [for improvements], some £45,000, through donations, sponsorship

and ongoing fundraising activities.” “The new facilities will improve the quality of the rugby experience for everyone using the site and provide more playing opportunities, especially for local people in the 14-24 age-group,” said RFU area facilities manager Jon Bendall. The new lighting got its debut at a veterans’ charity match between the President’s XV and the Chairman’s XV featuring former Keynsham players, Newport High School Old Boys and other local clubs. Proceeds from the game on November 17 went to The PA Trust, which was set up in memory of Pierre-Andre Blundell, a former a Keynsham and Newport HS player, to fund research into spinal injuries. The chairman’s side claimed the victory – but the game was the winner.

Bowling club hands out season’s honours At the start of November Keynsham Bowling Club held its annual general meeting in the clubhouse when various appointments were made for next season, writes our correspondent. Mo Dickinson retired as the ladies’ captain and her place has been taken by Ann Newbery, while Beresford Parker will continue as the men’s captain. Each year the captains nominate a charity for the following year and Ann and Beresford have picked the Jessie May Trust, a charity based in Kingswood providing hospice at home care for terminally ill children. The AGM was quickly followed by the annual presentation lunch, which took place at Keynsham Rugby Club. Apart from enjoying a good meal, washed down with the occasional drink, it allowed those members who had won club competitions during the season to receive their trophies.

Following on from this the clubhouse was packed on a Friday evening as nearly 60

members gathered for a curry night, prepared by chef Clive Brain, supported by his merry

band of helpers on the social committee. Our picture shows club members tucking in.

SPORT Coaches from football teams across the area put sporting rivalries aside to take part in an evening of training at Somerdale Pavilion. Coaches4Coaches Night was hosted by Fry Club FC with the support of the FA and Somerset FA on November 15. FA coach mentor Phil Rochford Smith, Bernie Grimes and Ray Kelsey led the session to share good football practices with 20 local grassroots coaches to enhance their development and skills. The event will even benefit players as far afield as Spain, as it was also joined by one Spanish coach who is undertaking a Football Foundation course in England.

Open brings golfers from far and wide

This year’s Saltford Golf Club Seniors Open was one of the most successful ever held, selling out a number of weeks before the competition, writes our correspondent. Visitors participating in the competition came from far and wide, including Newport and Exeter, as well as many local clubs. Revenue from the Open went towards the Dorothy House Hospice, which is this year’s Seniors charity. The overall winner was Ray Broome from Henbury Golf Club with 42 points, and the highest placed Saltford player was Adrian Meacham, also with 42 points. On a sadder note, the club lost one of its most popular members with the untimely death of Keith Raymond. Not only was Keith an active member of the Seniors section he participated in the weekend roll-ups and most other club competitions. In recognition of Keith, his family kindly donated a

crystal glass trophy, which will be awarded to the highest placed Saltford member. Adrian Meacham was the first recipient.

Keith Raymond’s son Paul presented both trophies at a recent presentation ceremony held at Saltford Golf Club.

From left: Steve Tynan, Seniors Open organiser; Adrian Meacham, highest placed Saltford member; overall winner Ray Broome; and Paul Raymond
