Pensioner moved The son of a Keynsham pensioner whose pet pug suffered catastrophic injuries after being mauled by another dog says he is “lost for words” at the outpouring of support the family has received from the community. Well-wishers have donated more than £1,800 to pay for surgery for little Wills after he was attacked at the recreation ground near Carpenters Lane on the evening of November 19 by an Akita that had gotten loose. Wills’ chest was ripped open and his lung punctured while his 72-year-old owner Mike Tucker suffered bites to his arm and hand as he tried to protect his pet. Mr Tucker’s pug puppy Lucy escaped unharmed. Wills was rushed to the vet for life-saving surgery and Mr Tucker and his wife Carol now face a bill expected to be around £4,000 and ongoing medical costs, which their pet insurance will not fully cover. Wills’ suffering was

Wills following his surgery particularly heart-breaking for Mr Tucker, said his son Stu, as the dog had been his “rock” as he underwent treatment for lung, lymph node and oesophageal cancer in 2015, from which he is now in remission. Mr Tucker has had Wills for over four years since he was a puppy. News of the attack soon spread among neighbours, fellow dog walkers and the surrounding community, where Mr Tucker is a familiar sight on his daily walks

Comment on £1.5m improvement project Comments on proposals to make Keynsham’s town centre more welcoming are being accepted throughout December. Consultation with people who live and work in the town will run until January 11. Bath and North East Somerset Council is drawing up proposals for up to £1.5 million of improvements to public spaces in the town centre, including the “greening” of Temple Street, improvements to pedestrian walkways from the Memorial Park and Ashton Way and

better street signage. Keynsham Town Council chairman Clive Fricker said: “This will be a great opportunity to help shape the centre of our town for many years to come. “The town council has been working closely with B&NES on this project and we believe there is a real opportunity for Keynsham.” Find out more about the plans and comment at www. bathnes.gov.uk/keynsham or at the One-Stop Shop at Keynsham Library.

to tears by support for pet pug Wills with his pugs, and offers of help began pouring in. Stu, who lives in Paulton and is also helping to pay the vets’ costs, set up an online fundraising page to go towards Wills’ medical care in the days following the attack and said his dad had been moved to tears by people’s generosity towards his “best friend”. He said: “My parents have had many little pugs as we grew up. My dad has been taking them all on the same walk for many years around the rec at the back of their home. This little dog means the world to my dad and has been his absolute rock while recovering from cancer. “Keynsham, you have been – well, to be honest, I do not know the words to describe what I need to say. But we truly are thankful and I’m very proud to have such a connection with heartfelt and compassionate people like you all. “I think for me it just

highlights that there are so many good people in the world, and when you have a strong community it very much can make us all very proud to be part of it.” He said his dad has now been reunited with Wills, who is recovering from his surgery at home and has been out for a few short walks already. Police said the Akita also attacked another dog before it was captured by two passers-by. They said the Akita had been seized and inquiries into the incident are ongoing. Stu has thanked the two people who stepped in to help during the attack. He said once Wills was fully recovered the family hoped to be able to invite supporters to meet him and enjoy some tea and cake. Residents call for CCTV and action to tackle park’s ‘escalating’ problems Residents living near Keynsham Memorial Park have called on police and councils to urgently step up their efforts to catch people “terrorising” the area with anti-social behaviour – and install CCTV. Police were called by people living around the park who reported a night of disturbances on November 5, including people riding motorbikes in the park and setting off fireworks there and in the Civic Centre car park. In a letter to Keynsham Town Council, the residents said they were “astounded” to be told by officers that there was no CCTV in the park and that other cameras in the town were not working. Bath and North East Somerset Council has confirmed that work to upgrade the town’s CCTV network is ongoing and

is expected to be completed in the new year, including a new camera at the bandstand. In their letter residents wrote: “Over the last weeks and months, it has been well documented through the local press that there have been many fires throughout the park. “This problem is clearly escalating, so is it not time that we as council taxpayers should expect the council and the local constabulary to put more resources into catching these vandals who are terrorising the area of Keynsham and costing taxpayers repair bills – money that we would suggest could be better spent on prevention.” They added: “Our greatest concern is that someone or property is going to be seriously hurt/damaged before too long, especially given that the vandals

concerned know that there is no deterrent.” Keynsham councillor Charles Gerrish said many of the town’s existing cameras had now been replaced and a number of new ones would soon be installed. He said: “The original CCTV network in Keysham worked on line of sight between the cameras and receiver. However, since it was introduced nearly a decade ago, obstacles such as new developments and tree growth have rendered the system inoperable. “Work to upgrade the system is ongoing. Cameras in Temple Street, Ashton Way, the High Street, Bath Hill car park and the Fox & Hounds car park have all been replaced. Work to install new cameras at Keynsham Railway Station, Bristol Road and in the bandstand

at Keynsham Park will be completed early in the new year. “Planning permission has now been granted to fit wireless connectors to the cameras so that they can be monitored remotely by the council’s CCTV operators. Once installed the Wi-Fi infrastructure will enable the cameras to communicate back to the Civic Centre/OneStop Shop. This will enable footage to be viewed across the network and recorded locally. It is anticipated the system will be fully operational by the end of January.” This month, Keynsham Town Council is due to discuss whether to use money paid to the town by developers under the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) initiative to fund a camera in the upper Memorial Park area and one in the Queens Road area.

Don’t eat that, it’s poisonous!

M

ost things pets eat that they are not meant to will just make them poorly. However, there are a few things which really are poisonous to our pets and the golden rule is if in doubt, give your veterinary practice a shout! Things that are very toxic to dogs l Chocolate – contains a toxic ingredient called theobromine. Dark chocolate contains the highest level of this substance. Milk chocolate and white chocolate contain lower levels. If you know how much your dog weighs and how much and what type of chocolate they have eaten, your vet will be able to work out whether enough has been eaten to cause a problem. It is worth noting that garden mulches made from cocoa shells contain very high levels of theobromine – so gardeners beware if you have a dog. l Raisins – in mince pies, Christmas pudding and fruit cake. These are very toxic and can cause kidney failure in some dogs. Not all dogs will be sensitive but unfortunately there is no way of knowing which will be affected. Give your vet practice a call if you are unsure. Less serious l The holly and the ivy! Both these festive plants, often used as decorations, can cause dogs to get poorly if eaten. They can

cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Similarly mistletoe and peanuts can make your pooch poorly if they eat enough. Things that are very toxic to cats l Lilies – A beautiful and popular flower at Christmas. However, make sure they are out of the way of our feline friends who are extremely susceptible to kidney failure from ingestion of any part of this plant. Even licking their fur having rubbed against the plant can cause a problem. l Paracetamol – We humans may have good reason over the festive season to take the odd painkiller but don’t leave them lying around so your cat can get hold of them. Paracetamol poisoning in cats is invariably fatal. Less serious l Peace lilies, cyclamen and poinsettia are all very popular Christmas plants but can cause sickness, drooling and depression if eaten. Fortunately the symptoms are self-limiting and the prognosis is excellent. In the unlikely event that your pet does have a Christmas emergency when your surgery is closed, call Highcroft Veterinary Hospital on 01275 832410. We will have vets and nurses on-site 24 hours a day over the festive period, so your pets will be in safe hands if the worst were to happen.

‘Frustration’ at lack of movement on reopening village’s train station

Councillors in Saltford who are backing a campaign to reopen the village’s railway station have written to regional leaders to express their “frustration” at the lack of news on the long-awaited project. Saltford Parish Council says reinstating the station, which closed in 1970, as part of the MetroWest scheme remains “a priority” for the council but it was concerned that £250,000 earmarked by Bath and North East Somerset Council in 2015/16 to take the project a step further while working with Network Rail “remains unspent”. Further concern over the station’s future was sparked by the release of the West of England Combined Authority’s (WECA) latest draft of its Joint Spatial Plan for the region in which

Saltford station was missing from a diagram drawn up to show the locations of potential new developments, roads, park and rides and train stations (Figure 7 Appendix A). In the letter signed by chair Chris Warren, which has been sent to WECA leaders, B&NES Council leaders, bosses at Network Rail and local MPs, the parish council says: “The reopening of Saltford railway station is viable, achievable, and contrasts with other proposals floated for a station between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa such as a Newton park-and-ride station in green-belt land.” Speaking to Keynshamvoice Cllr Warren said with the local population growing as more homes are built in the area, campaigners felt a station at

Saltford was needed now more than ever but the project seemed to have stalled. He added: “Saltford Parish Council is extremely disappointed at the complete lack of progress made in the last three and half years.” The council’s letter also tackles what it calls “misrepresentation” of the station site and its capacity for parking, which could “undermine the case” for the station, saying the land could accommodate 144 cars – or more with a two-storey car park – while additional off-site parking was also available. The parish council has asked for a response to its concerns and concludes: “Saltford Parish Council remains frustrated at the lack of information being provided to the parish council by B&NES Council and the West

of England Combined Authority and the apparent misrepresentation by some about this vital project.” A spokesperson for B&NES Council told Keynshamvoice: “While the council is supportive of the reopening of a station at Saltford, this is a complex matter and we are in discussion with Network Rail regarding the points raised by the parish council in their letter. A formal response will be provided to the parish council once we have concluded those discussions.” MetroWest is a project that aims to improve rail services in the Greater Bristol area, including the reopening of the Portishead and Henbury lines, as well as the creation of new or reopening of existing stations at a number of sites in the area.

Plan to tackle residents’ traffic concerns revealed More double yellow lines and narrowing a stretch of road are among proposals that have been drawn up to tackle traffic issues in Keynsham’s Park Road and West View Road. The plans have been released by Bath and North East Somerset Council following consultation with people living along the two roads, which was launched after the area’s ward councillors asked for traffic management to be introduced to help motorists and public transport. Around a third of residents responded to the survey, which asked for their views on raised speed tables and cushions, parking bays and road narrowing. Following the consultation, B&NES has proposed a number of measures and hopes work can start early in the next financial year.

The council says plans include: l The pedestrian island at the junction of West View Road and Charlton Road will be upgraded, including the installation of dropped kerbs l A priority road narrowing will be introduced in Park Road at its junction with Hawthorne Lane, which will formalise current driving practices l Existing single white lines across driveway entrances will be repainted l Disused disabled parking bays will be removed l Following the completion of a statutory legal process, double yellow lines are also proposed for various junctions along Park Road, to improve visibility and help traffic flow, particularly for public transport. This would include the replacement of existing

markings at some junctions. Councillor Mark Shelford, B&NS cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “We have worked hard with ward councillors and residents to develop measures they consider appropriate in the area in which they live. “If the proposals are approved and funding confirmed, we’ll then formally consult on new parking restrictions. We anticipate the improvement works to begin early in the next financial year.”

New development has added ‘hygge’

A developer building more than 260 homes off the Bath Road on Keynsham’s eastern edge has revealed the estate’s new name – and it’s got a distinctly Scandinavian ring. A number of homes have now been pre-released for sale at Crest Nicholson’s Hygge Park, a name the developer says has been inspired by Danish living. A spokesperson said: “Hygge Park has been aptly named with the Danish concept of comfort and wellbeing in mind, with the homes expertly designed to suit a modern lifestyle. The open-living layouts encourage free movement between the generous kitchen, dining and living areas and large windows promote a light and airy feel to the homes.” There has been a great deal of interest in “hygge” in recent years with many books purporting to teach us all how to embrace the concept – but perhaps more pressing is how to pronounce it. The various lifestyle bibles seem to agree it’s “hoo-gah”.

Developer drops bid for 80 homes

First Christmas for community post office Staff and volunteers are gearing up for Saltford Post Office’s first Christmas as a community-run service. The team opened the branch in the same building as Saltford Library on September 24 after the village’s previous post office closed at the end of last year. The new post office is stocking Christmas stamps, One4All gift cards and currency for those who might be taking a festive break, as well as offering delivery services to ensure Christmas presents reach those near and far.

December, 2018

The branch also offers Moneygrams, postal orders, cash withdrawals and bank deposits. Alongside post office counter services, visitors will also find a range of stationery on the shelves, which includes cards and gift wrap. The branch is open on Mondays from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, Tuesdays to Fridays from 10.30am to 2.30pm and Saturdays from 9am to noon. The library is also open at the same times.

A developer has withdrawn an application to build 80 homes on land bordering a local nature reserve. Taylor Wimpey dropped its bid for outline planning permission for the site off Minsmere Road, next to Manor Road Community Woodland on November 16 – but says there may be a revised application. The farmland has been earmarked – or safeguarded – for future development by Bath and North East Somerset Council, but could be released to developers before long following the review of B&NES’ Local Plan, which is currently under way. A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: “With respect to the Joint Spatial Plan for the West of England and the emerging review of the Bath and North East Somerset Local Plan, we

have been working closely with the council on this project and subsequently made the decision to withdraw the planning application. The content, form and timing of any revised planning application will be taken in due course and it goes without saying that we will continue to collaborate with the council as their involvement with the scheme is very important to us.” Meanwhile the council is still to make a decision on a bid to begin building on another parcel of safeguarded land nearby, which is next to the site where Crest Nicholson is currently building 261 homes off the Bath Road – now called Hygge Park. More than 300 objections to Mactaggart and Mickel’s outline planning application for 200 homes have been registered with the council. Local Plan consultation – Page 18

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

W

ow, where has the year gone! In the policing world time moves fast. Before we know what’s happening it’s Christmas again. Christmas brings its own sorts of problems and for all of the emergency services, the busier night-times tend to draw on all our resources. In the policing world the offences that we deal with move in cycles. At this time of year, since the nights are longer and colder, the offences that we have to deal with change. You may have seen on social media that all over Bristol and Bath we have been suffering with theft of tools from motor vehicles. This is not only happening overnight but in the daytime too, in car parks and other areas where

11

offenders are being more brazen. We can’t be everywhere all the time and so we need your help. If something looks wrong it might just be, so pay attention, jot down some details, take photographs and help us to help victims by reporting incidents. If we don’t know we can’t help. As funding has been cut we have had to rely on information and support from the public and although you may not realise it, it does all help. Keep being that “good neighbour” by reporting incidents. We also suffer with increased burglaries to outhouses, sheds and garages, with offenders’ target mainly being tools. These are “quick flip” items for the criminal; very rarely are they security marked, which means that once they have been taken it is really hard for us to identify them as stolen and where they were stolen from. Please take your time to mark items. Even if you just write your house number and postcode on them in permanent marker – something is better than nothing. There is nothing better than catching an offender and being able to link stolen property

straight away, giving them no time to come up with stories as to why they have them. If you want more sophisticated ways to mark your property then I suggest using the internet – there are hundreds of products on the market to suit all budgets. Our Bobby Van service has been visiting Keynsham and dropping off leaflets to warn homeowners about paddle-style door handles. In basic terms these are handles that you need to lift up to engage the multi-locks to actually make the door secure. If you just pull these doors shut without doing this then they are vulnerable to the “slip latch” method of entry. If you are concerned about this and want to speak to our expert about home security then please get in touch via the Avon and Somerset website using the community pages. Lastly, with Christmas just around the corner we will be running Operation Tonic, our drinkdrive campaign. I would urge you not to drink and drive. Organise a lift, taxi or designated driver – don’t ruin your life with one silly choice.

Laptops help keep police on the beat Police officers have been issued with laptops to enable them to fill out their paperwork on the move and spend more time out on the beat. Cafes, libraries and community centres are among the venues officers will potentially use instead of returning to their stations to complete office work. Avon and Somerset Police have issued laptops and smartphones to all front line officers and Deputy Chief Constable Sarah Crew said: “I know that people appreciate a visible police presence in their community, and my hope is that as officers increasingly take their office outside, the public’s confidence in our service will increase. It’s always reassuring to see a police officer out and about in your community – please do say hello when you see them. If you want to report something to us, ask a question or seek advice, please do so – our officers will always do their best to help.”

Local family charity Home Start Bristol asks parents and grandparents what better way to kick-start the new year than with a new challenge that can benefit both you, and others in your area? Home Start Bristol is coming to Kingswood this January to run its popular, accredited Volunteer Preparation training course. The course runs for 36 hours over nine weeks. Course times are designed to tie in with school hours and volunteers are asked to attend just one day a week. Beverley Symonds, Home Start Bristol’s scheme manager, said: “When you volunteer for Home Start Bristol, you’ll be a lifeline for a family: helping them get back on their feet and develop the skills they need to cope in the future. “Our preparation courses equip new volunteers with everything they need to support a family. The courses are really interactive, great

fun and you’ll meet a group of new, like-minded people. In fact, in recent questionnaires, 100 per cent of trained volunteers would recommend the course to a friend. Another bonus is that it’s Level 2 accredited and can be a great stepping stone to future careers.” Home Start Bristol is an independent registered charity supporting struggling families with at least one child under five.

It recruits and trains volunteers, and carefully matches them with local families. Rooted in the communities it serves, Home Start Bristol’s mission is to make a lasting and positive impact on the development of children, and the health and welfare of the family. If you would like to become a Home Start Bristol volunteer, visit www.homestartbristol.org.uk or phone 0117 950 1170.

A total of 187 runners joined the first Somerdale Pavilion parkrun

Somerdale hosts town’s inaugural parkrun Nearly 200 runners lined up at the start line for Keynsham’s inaugural parkrun last month. The event, which is now taking place every Saturday morning, saw participants follow a 5km course in the grounds behind Somerdale Pavilion. Parkruns take place around the country and have enjoyed huge popularity among runners, who can take part for free every week and receive an official time at the end. They are noncompetitive and open to anyone aged from four and up. The events are organised by volunteers and Somerdale Pavilion parkrun co-directors Ian Mussell and Matthew Brace were joined by a team of 23 people to help marshall runners and generally ensure the launch on Saturday, November 17 ran smoothly. The course took runners on two laps of the ShamXross cyclocross track that has been marked out on the fields at

FREE inspections NO call-out fees

A team of volunteers organised and marshalled the event Somerdale and includes a spiral section known as the “Curly Wurly”. ShamXross’s Kevin Brewer led the run on his bike, while the event’s dedicated “tail walkers” jogged behind to ensure no one came last. Matthew said: “This is a brilliant course, which is a bit different to a lot of other

parkruns as it’s more like a cross country run with its different sections.” First to cross the finish line out of 187 runners was Alex Parsons after just 17 minutes 38 seconds, while Fiona Blackmore was the first female runner to finish with a time of 21 minutes 51 seconds.

Before the participants set off, run director Linsey Miles thanked everyone who helped get the event off the ground, including Taylor Wimpey, Kevin Brewer and ShamXross, Aquaterra and the Somerdale Pavilion, local running clubs Bitton Road Runners, Staple Hill Runners, Frys Joggers and Emersons Green Running Club and an anonymous donor who provided the set-up funds for the event. The run was followed by coffee inside Somerdale Pavilion. The Somerdale Pavilion parkrun now takes place every Saturday at 9am – it is free but runners must register online at www.parkrun.org.uk/ somerdalepavilion where there is also much more information about the event. Anyone who would like to volunteer at the runs can email somerdalepavilionhelpers@ parkrun.com

n NEWS Flood film night to round off activities Organisers are rounding off an “amazing” year of events held to commemorate 50 years since the Great Flood of 1968 with an evening of film and audio. Pensford Memorial Hall will host the event on Monday, December 3, when the audience will be able to watch footage and hear audio both from the archive and from the activities that took place in communities around the Chew Valley this year. Ruth Coleman, Great Flood Project officer for the West of England Rural Network (WERN), will present the screenings and will outline future flood-related initiatives in the area. She said: “Once again, communities have come together in commemoration just as they did to clear up after the flood of 1968 – it’s been an amazing year.” The event takes place on December 3 from 7.30pm to 9pm and costs 50p for Pensford History Society members or £3.50 for non-members.

Small but beautiful space for ArtSpace’s latest pop-up shop A group of “nomadic” Keynsham-based artists has set up shop in the town centre to offer unique Christmas gifts for the third year running. Members of Keynsham ArtSpace have taken over a room above Temple Street Canteen to display and sell a wide range of handmade items, from paintings to cufflinks. The group has previously opened pop-up shops in empty units in Market Walk and Temple Street and say their current space is small – but beautiful. Chair Joe Tymkow said: “This room is even smaller than the marquee we use in the park for the Keynsham Music Festival in the summer. “It’s important that all the artists taking part are fairly represented, but it would have been easy to over-pack the room. The

A portrait by Sophie Galliers space looks full but not overcrowded.” Half of the group’s artists currently have work on show but from the start of December, when the Keynsham Photowalkers exhibition comes to an end, the space will be used to expand the collection on show and dis-

play larger pieces of work. Mr Tymkow said: “There are some interesting pieces on show this winter, from deceptively understated watercolours to hand-woven cufflinks, laser-cut and ceramic Christmas tree decorations, to mixed media artworks including machine-made lacework.” Keynsham ArtSpace is a not-for-profit group that aims to promote local artists by giving them the chance to exhibit their work. Members are currently on the look out for a permanent home for the group. Mr Tymkow is also artist in residence at The Chocolate Quarter where he runs art and pottery sessions in the studio alongside fellow ArtSpace founder Allen Richards. Supporters of Keynsham Plastic Re-Action at one of their supermarket protests – the group is now talking to politicians locally and nationally

Delight as council pledges to cut out single-use plastics Keynsham Town Council has committed to take action on single-use plastics after campaigners presented councillors with a petition bearing more than 1,000 signatures. The local authority has approved a new policy on singleuse plastics in which it pledges to reduce its own use and work with businesses, organisations and residents to cut out disposable plastics to support a drive to make Keynsham a “single-useplastic-free town”. In its policy, the council points to items such as plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soft drinks and water bottles, plastic cups and food packaging and says it will set targets to eliminate them across the council’s operations as well as supporting community initiatives to limit their use. Organisations that receive funding from the council will be required to show their own plans to reduce single-use plastics while the authority will also seek to cut disposable plastics from town council-sponsored events, such as Keynsham Music Festival and the Winter Festival, and look for new ways to recycle plastic waste generated by them. The document says: “Reducing single-use plastics is something Keynsham residents have told us they expect and

value. Keynsham Town Council recognises that poorly managed waste plastics pose a threat to the global marine environment, and also to our town. Therefore, the town council will work towards minimising use of single-use plastics across its own operations and services and pro-actively work with the local community, businesses and B&NES to find positive solutions for reducing unnecessary waste plastics across the town.” Councillors agreed to draw up plans to implement the new policy in the new year. The move has been welcomed by campaigners from Keynsham Plastic Re-Action after they presented a petition with 1,137 names backing their call for action from the town council and Bath and North East Somerset Council. Fiona Edwards, from KPRA, said: “We believe that councils should lead the way in reducing plastic consumption in the community, and KPRA is very pleased that the town council has developed and adopted this plastic policy. “We will be keen to be involved in talks around the practical implementation of this policy in the new year.” The group has also presented the petition to B&NES Council as well as holding talks with Councillor Bob Goodman, the B&NES cabinet

member for development and neighbourhoods, and MP Jacob Rees-Mogg. Fiona said after focusing on supermarkets – when the group’s supporters unwrapped their shopping at the checkouts and left the plastic waste at the stores in a series of demonstrations – and engaging with politicians at national and local level, the group was also working with high street businesses, particularly

takeaways, to gain accreditation as a Plastic-Free Community in a scheme run by Surfers Against Sewage, which would also involve councillors, schools and community groups. For more information, people can get in touch at the Keynsham Plastic Re-Action Facebook page or pop into Conscience Foods at 7 High Street. l Eco-entrepreneur’s tips for plastic-free festivities – Page 21

Have your say on where thousands With a target of thousands of homes to build over the next two decades to meet demand, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s blueprint for where these new houses will go has sparked debate across the district. Public consultation is now under way on the latest draft of the B&NES Local Plan, which sets out options for the locations of future housing developments, new employment and what infrastructure, such as new roads, these sites will need – and residents are being asked to share their views. In Keynsham, land to the north of the town bordering Avon Valley Country and Wildlife Park has been earmarked as a potential location for a “garden community” of up to 1,500 homes, employment space providing around 1,600 new jobs, a primary school and, potentially, a new marina. Under the plan, a new road linking the A4 and

Avon Mill Lane would be built while Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park could be relocated further to the east. A spokesperson for the attraction said it was fully in support of the scheme. “We would like to publicly endorse our support for the B&NES

Local Plan and its proposals, which would involve us moving sites. We are excited about the potential opportunities the Local Plan could bring to us as a local attraction and business,” the spokesperson added. “We would like to reassure our guests that Avon Valley

Adventure and Wildlife Park intends to remain a vital part of the local community, as we have done for 30 years, and it is our ambition to continue to grow.” With the site mainly in the green belt, however, the prospect of losing further undeveloped land between Keynsham and Saltford has raised concerns in communities on both sides. In Saltford, where campaigners are also preparing to fight any attempts to earmark nine small sites around the village for development, the Saltford Environment Group said it would “strongly resist” any overlap into the village’s green belt from any development at north Keynsham. A spokesperson from SEG said: “Our health and wellbeing really does depend on easy access to green open spaces. SEG is therefore of the opinion that a rural town like Keynsham has good reason to retain its own greenbelt buffer surrounding the town

ast year it became one of the fastest-selling DVDs on Amazon and at Waterstones (at both The Galleries and Cribbs Causeway branches). Now it has become available again – but probably for the last time ever, say the producers. Sir Tony Robinson’s famed History of Bristol was a remarkable sensation last year, wherever it went on sale.

“It was phenomenal, we couldn’t cope with the demand,” says producer Martin Weitz. “Orders were coming in from all over the country, not only from Bristol and the South West, but from Sussex to Surrey, Scotland to Stratford-on-Avon, it seemed as if everyone just wanted to have a copy – or give it as a gift to someone they love. “I think it’s become such a popular DVD because it’s presented so entertainingly by TV’s favourite historian. Sir Tony’s passion and enthusiasm for Bristol really shines through,” Weitz continues. Sir Tony, who not so many years ago used to live in Clifton, said: “It’s such a pleasure to be able to sing the praises of my favourite British city, show you its magnificent architecture, and tell you some of its fascinating stories.” The original film was made just over 20 years ago and the producers have restored the master onto a high quality DVD format so it can be enjoyed again in this special anniversary edition. of homes will go and within its own boundary.” Raising concerns from Keynsham’s side of the “buffer”, Liz Barling from Transition Keynsham said: “Transition Keynsham accepts that B&NES needs to build more houses, but we reject any attempt to build them on the green belt between Keynsham and Salford. Keynsham is a rural market town and Saltford is a rural village. Building on the green belt would change that for the worse, swallowing up the fields and woods that make our communities distinct. It would be bad for the wildlife that is currently protected, and bad for our health and wellbeing by increasing traffic on our roads and decreasing our access to nature.” Meanwhile, the Local Plan has stirred up controversy in and around Whitchurch Village where B&NES hopes another “garden community” of 2,000 homes will be built, with one city councillor accusing the authority

of “dumping” houses on the edge of Bristol. A new road connecting the A4 Bath Road at Hicks Gate with South Bristol and the A37 is also among the proposed options. Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “The Local Plan will shape the future of Bath and North East Somerset for the next two decades so it’s really important that it works for all our communities. We’ve asked residents for their views at every stage of its development and this consultation is another opportunity to comment on these options and inform the next step, which is the preparation of a Draft Plan setting out the council’s proposed site allocations and policy for developments.” To read the Local Plan and comment, until January 7, people can visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/ localplan2016-2036 or go to the One-Stop Shop at Keynsham Library.

Residents recall families’ Great War stories A Keynsham pensioner is among a number of Bath and North East Somerset residents who have shared their family memories of the First World War for a new book. Ray Holland, who attends Age UK B&NES’ Keynsham Day Centre, told researchers about his much-loved father and his time serving with the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars as well as showing them family photos from the time. He said: “When my father and uncle started to talk about the war everyone in our family would sit up and listen. My father was the most wonderful man in the world. He really, really was. I always think of him, always look up to what he told me.” The book, A Century’s Memories, contains stories from members of Age UK B&NES’s day centres in Keynsham and Midsomer Norton, who were interviewed for the project by Army Cadets and Bath College students. Session leader and copy

Ray Holland editor Dawn Gorman said: “At first they didn’t understand why we wanted to talk about the First World War rather than the Second, which they had direct personal memories of. But then they started to talk and it brought back so many memories for them of what their parents had told them, and they brought in pictures and photos for us to look at. It was wonderful.” The project was financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and led by B&NES Council and copies of the book are available at B&NES libraries.

Eco-entrepreneur’s plastic-free festive tips Did you know that in the UK alone more than six million rolls of plastic wrapping tape will be sold in the run-up to Christmas – and 227,000 miles of wrapping paper will end up being thrown away? In fact, the UK produces 30 per cent more waste over the festive period – a sobering thought when the rest of the year most of us are consciously trying to reduce the amount of rubbish which could end up clogging up our waterways and oceans and harming our wildlife. So what should we do? Throw caution to the wind just because it’s Christmas? No way, argues Cath Moore, a passionate campaigner for the reduction of single-use plastics which she says are literally killing our planet. Cath, who lives in Fishponds, founded internet-based shop The Plastic Free Shop – www. theplasticfreeshop.co.uk – back in February after watching the film A Plastic Ocean. The film, a documentary about the amount of plastic in the world's oceans, horrified her and she vowed to become part of the solution – not part of the problem. Cath has been staggered by the interest shown in the business both in the UK and Europe, but especially locally, with people living locally arranging to pick up items to cut down on packaging. So far she has sold 550 packs of plastic-free cotton buds (they are made of cotton and bamboo

Cath Moore, founder of the internet-based The Plastic Free Shop, with Claire Stone and are compostable) and more than 1,000 bamboo toothbrushes (interesting fact – toothbrushes don’t biodegrade so every one ever made still exists somewhere on our planet). Cath, 54, said she never expected the public to ditch plastics overnight – what she hoped for was that people would make simple swaps. Cath said: “It has been quite a journey! Thanks to the support of local people, as well as the growing public interest in reducing single-use plastic, not only have orders to the shop grown dramatically but I’ve also been

involved in a lot of interesting initiatives. Even though we are now reaching more people, the ethos of making simple swaps and not trying to change everything all at once are still key to the way that we are doing things. “I’ve also started doing popup shops for corporates and businesses in Bristol – basically setting up a market stall in their foyer so that staff can see some of our products, and I’ve run plastic-free parties in the evenings for people in Fishponds, a bit like Tupperware parties of old! I’ve also had stalls at markets, including B-Bees in Fishponds,

St Nick’s Market and the Festival of Nature in Bristol.” In fact Cath has been so busy she’s taken on an extra pair of hands, 44-year-old Claire Stone from Emersons Green who helps out in the week. The duo are currently rushed off their feet, preparing to meet their last order deadline of December 18. Gratifyingly, Cath’s work is not going unnoticed. She says it was “thrilling” to be mentioned in 12 Small Acts To Save Our World – an international book for the WWF which is proving really popular as a beginner’s resource for reducing plastic. “It has also been great to collaborate with other local businesses and charities – such as City to Sea, Refill Bristol and thismug.life “I’m encouraged to see how some of our local big retailers such as Tesco, Morrisons and Iceland are getting on board (the giants are trialling deposit return schemes for plastic bottles) and playing an ever-increasing role in reducing plastic usage – it’s amazing to think that so much progress has been made in the past few months. As a small example, just through my small business alone we have sold over 1,000 bamboo toothbrushes, totally mind-blowing to think that there are now 1,000 fewer plastic toothbrushes clogging up the world and the oceans. “It is amazing that just that one simple swap really does add up – collectively we really can make a difference.”

Some of Cath’s ideas for eco-friendly festivities Wrapping parcels: * Choose wrapping paper which is actually made of paper (ideally recycled), but at the very least consider avoiding paper that’s shiny or covered in glitter. You could even try using fabric. * Be creative with decorating gifts – try reusable string, paper strips or ribbon bows rather than plastic pre-made bows or decorations. * Use last year’s cards, cut up to make tags for your gifts. * See if you can use less plastic tape to secure your parcels – unless they are being sent in the post, you don’t need to cover every single edge with tape. Also

consider using paper-based tape, or even just ditching the tape altogether and getting inventive with string. Decorations: * Look after the decorations you already have – chances are you’ve got a big stash in the attic, and with a bit of love, they’ll last for a very long time. * Get crafty and go old-fashioned – try making your own paper chains or hanging decorations and head outside to collect fallen pine cones, twigs and holly. * Eat the decorations – take inspiration from Europe

where edible decorations are everywhere. From dried orange slices with cloves stuck in them (they make your house smell amazing) to gingerbread shapes, you’ll find there are plenty of ways of making decorations that also taste fab! And if you aren’t feeling creative, chocolate coins are a good first step. Festive food: * Take your own containers to the deli or supermarket so that you don’t end up with loads of singleuse packaging by Boxing Day. * Have a go at home baking for cakes, snacks and nibbles –

savoury dips are super easy to make too. * Ditch the plastic cups and plates – yes, they are convenient, but if you really can’t face the washing up, consider paper plates and cups instead. Above all relax – enjoy the festive season, be conscious of what you are buying and who you are buying for, and see if you can make things a tad more simple. Most of all, don’t stress. You can’t save the world all by yourself so try to remember that every single swap that you make is a step in the right direction.

espite the rain, crowds still gathered and were eager to watch the unveiling of the poppy cascade. Everyone held their breath as it was slowly raised up to the top of St John’s Church’s East Tower. Although we had been planning this for several weeks, we were still not sure if the weight of the cascade would allow it to remain in place once secured, especially as there was still a week to go until Remembrance Sunday; it was a case of fingers crossed. It was only a couple of days before that local TV and radio began to take an interest, after originally saying that they had already selected specific Remembrance projects for their coverage. Keynsham was featured on Made in Bristol TV News and on Radio Bristol. Later on in the week crowds gathered again, this time packing St John’s Church for the Keynsham Remembers memorial service, leaving standing room only. Youngsters from Chandag Junior

Children with wooden poppies at the Keynsham Remembers service School and St John’s C of E Primary sang with the Keynsham Good Afternoon Choir and entertained everyone with a selection of World War I songs. At the end of the service, 89 specially commissioned wooden poppies were handed out to the children and were then placed in the grounds of the church. The service was featured on the local news by both ITV and BBC Points West. Remembrance Sunday saw record crowds gathered along the High Street to watch the parade march from St John’s Church down to the Memorial Gates for the wreath-laying ceremony. For

the first time, Keynsham in Bloom joined other organisations and laid a wreath at the Memorial Gates. Members of Keynsham Rocks also laid 89 hand-painted rocks in the crown-shaped floral display next to the children’s play area ahead of the Remembrance service. During the run-up to Remembrance Day, the High Street became a blaze of red with local businesses adding their own interpretation with colourful window displays and knitted poppies. We never thought that the poppy cascade would receive so much coverage, with visitors

making special trips to Keynsham just to see it. Even a week after Remembrance Day, people could still be seen taking photos. This is by far the most memorable project that we have been involved in. Many of our lady knitters said that they felt honoured to have been part of the project and are keen to be involved in our next one. Directly after the memorial parade, Keynsham in Bloom volunteers headed up to Wellsway School, where we had a selection of hand-painted pots, decorations and festive plants on sale to raise funds for our community projects. We will also be selling decorated pots and festive plants at our fundraising stall at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday, December 8. I would once again like to say a special thank you to everyone involved with the poppy cascade, to local businesses for their window displays and to everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes in organising the Remembrance Parade. Thanks also go to Southern Electrical Contracting for their generous support in providing a cherry picker and operative. We also give a special thank you to Keynsham Royal British Legion for hosting our poppy workshops and to St John’s Church for facilitating the poppy display. Together we all raised the profile of Keynsham and demonstrated what a great community we are.

Thank you for honouring those who gave their today In the months leading up to the Remembrance Parade the Royal British Legion Keynsham Branch worked closely alongside Keynsham in Bloom and the many volunteers who achieved the most beautiful displays at St John’s Church and around Keynsham and members look forward to working together again in the future. The RBL committee ensured that poppies were mounted on lampposts and flags were flown along the High Street, where the shops put fabulous displays in their windows and shopfronts. The Centenary Remembrance Parade held in Keynsh-

am on November 11 was certainly wonderful. On behalf of the RBL Keynsham Branch, I would like to thank everyone involved who worked so hard to put on the parade. Special thanks to Stephen McCaw, the vicar of St John the Baptist Church, for the Remembrance service and to the church choir. It had been discovered that some names of the fallen were missing from the plaques in the church; with dedicated work by Keynsham and Saltford History Society these names were uncovered and a new plaque was made, which was unveiled during the service. A huge thanks goes to all who

marched in the parade itself. An outrider led the way with 93 Squadron Marching Band followed by, in no particular order, representatives from RBL Keynsham Branch, RBL Women’s Section, RBL Club, Royal Army Medics, REME, Royal Navy, Royal Airforce, Keynsham Army Cadets, 2386 Keynsham Air Training Corps, Keynsham Town Council, B&NES Council, Ukip, Keynsham Lions, 1st Keynsham Scouts, Keynsham Guides, Avon and Somerset Police, Avon Fire and Rescue, Bristol Ambulance, South Western Ambulance Service, Oddfellows, Co-Op Funeralcare

and the Rotary Club of Keynsham. Special thanks to the parade marshall Dave Jenkins and to the other marshalls who kept us safe and secure, managing the road closures to perfection. Finally, a big thank you goes to the many thousands of people from Keynsham who came to watch the parade – your support and respect for the fallen was something you should all be very proud of. We thank you. Remembering those who gave their today for our tomorrow. Amorée Radford RBL Keynsham Branch Secretary

n REMEMBRANCE NEWS Some villagers from Compton Dando gathered around the poppy cascade made by several women from the village

Weekend to fund lasting tribute to soldier Funds raised by villagers during a weekend of Remembrance events will be used to create a memorial to a local soldier, writes Ros Anstey. Residents of Compton Dando paid their respects to lost servicemen with a three-day exhibition in St Mary’s Church focusing on the three men from the village who were killed in the First World War – Ben Harding, Henry Harvey and Fred Light. Fred Light’s name, however, does not appear on the village war memorial and funds raised will now pay for it to be added with remaining money being split

between the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. As part of the exhibition, children from the youth group wrote poems, drew portraits, wrote imagined letters home and made promotional posters for the Home Front effort, while the weekend was brought to a close as the village joined in the international Battle’s Over movement, with a reading of A Tribute to the Millions, a bugler playing The Last Post, the lighting of a beacon, the bell-ringers tolling for peace and a reading of A Cry For Peace Around the World, followed by a community supper.

Ceremony honours workers lost to war Workers from Fry’s who lost their lives in war were remembered at a moving ceremony in the grounds of the former chocolate factory. Relatives of three of the workers were joined by residents of Somerdale, former Fry’s employees, and other members of the community to pay tribute to the 165 people whose names appear on the war memorial at the site. A cascade containing a poppy for each of those named was hung near the memorial alongside photos of 26 Fry’s office staff who were among the 136 employees killed in the First World War. The event was organised by former Fry’s colleagues who wanted to commemorate the fallen workers even after the factory’s closure and the

ceremony included music by ex-factory employee Elsie Griffin and three poems. Hugh Evans said: “We are really grateful for those who chose to use this space for their own personal remembrance. If there are 165 faces looking down from above saying thank you for remembering us, then we did our job. “The pictures were used to represent that behind every name is a face and behind every face is a family story. “Next year we will focus on the 29 employees killed in World War II, all from Somerdale, as remembrance moves to the 80th anniversary of the start of the war.” Top right, the poppy cascade and photos of some of the fallen; below, people at the ceremony

n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Hundreds of Scouts line up to pay tribute to the fallen An amazing result

Thank you to all those members of our community who donated items, came to support or spread the news of our 40th Annual Scout Auction and Book Sale – the event raised just over an amazing £5,000. This is a huge figure and will allow the Scout group to keep offering activities for young people. A special thanks to our two local main sponsors – Blackstone Financial Solutions, a local mortgage provider, and East Bristol Auctions, which helped with auctioning the items.

Remembrance Parade – What a turnout

For 100 years Scouts have been present at the Keynsham Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Day parade. This year we witnessed the largest turnout ever when more than 200 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers joined the procession – what a way to mark the centenary. There were so many that when the parade formed, the line stretched from Station Road to the Memorial Park down the side of the church.

Keynsham Scouts line up for the Remembrance Parade; three of the silhouettes honouring lost Scouts, left During the week before, all members heard stories about six of the first ever Keynsham Scouts who served in the Great War, three of whom returned and three who were lost in the fields of France. It’s amazing to think that in 1909, they formed what we know today as Keynsham Scouts and then, sadly, some lost their lives before 1918. In respect for the lost Scouting members There But Not There silhouettes were placed around the town and at Keynsham Scout HQ together with their stories.

Youth council debates hot topics with MP

MP Wera Hobhouse, centre, with members of KeynshamNow and their lead mentor Andy Wait

From Brexit to beef-farming, the topics discussed by the members of KeynshamNow during a Q&A session with Bath MP Wera Hobhouse were certainly wide-ranging. The Liberal Democrat MP visited the youth councillors as part of UK Parliament Week, telling the group about her childhood in a divided Germany, student politics at university and her later move to England. Speaking about one of her political passions, she said she believed councils should once again be building houses and that she was concerned about young people’s chances of owning their own home. Much time was devoted to Brexit, when the debate heated up, before the discussion moved on to green issues when member Braeden Wells quoted some statistics about the cost of producing beef, which gave the whole group food for thought about a sustainable future.

Store’s festival to help city charity transform lives

Baton twirlers excel at championships A team of baton twirlers have dazzled with their skills at a national level, returning from a recent championship competition with no less than 110 top six awards between them. Enchanté Baton Twirlers sent 17 members to the National Baton Twirling Association Championships in Torbay to compete in both individual and team events. The girls took 29 first place awards with 10 also qualifying to represent England at the European Championships in Italy next Easter, where they will compete in solo one baton, solo two baton, rhythmic twirl, X-strut and duet categories. The team also claimed the Overall High Points Shield. Meanwhile, one member was named most promising under-13 twirler while two others won the girls’ achievement award after earning second place at the World Championships earlier

this year. Enchanté coach Dana Weston said: “We are so proud of the girls, their commitment to training in the sport they love is commendable and they have completely exceeded all of our expectations.” Enchanté Baton Twirlers is a group of 20 girls between the ages of five and 16 who currently train at Culverhay Sports Centre and Hayesfield School in Bath as Keynsham Leisure Centre is redeveloped. The group is giving a demonstration on Saturday, December 15, at Culverhay Sports Centre from 12.30pm to 1.30pm to raise money to help send the girls selected for the England squad to the European Championships. A music festival is being hosted by a Keynsham trader to raise vital funds for a homeless charity in the run-up to Christmas. Iain Aitchison, who owns Longwell Records in Temple Street, is organising a day of live music featuring both up-andcoming and established acts on Saturday, December 15. Longwell Records Festival will feature acoustic music in and around the shops in Temple Street during the day before moving to The Space from 6pm to 10.30pm. Taking to the stage will be Bristol-based four-piece band PhoxJaw, Bath-based Novatines, The Allergies, also from Bristol, and international reggae DJ Steve Rice. Iain has organised the festival in aid of Help Bristol’s Homeless, a non-profit social enterprise that converts shipping containers into temporary flats to help people off the streets. He said: “I was a substance misuse worker in the NHS for 16 years and a large percentage of my caseload were people suffering with homelessness issues. “Jasper Thompson who runs the charity is a very inspirational person and instead of just talking about supporting the homeless he actually does it.” Tickets at £10 are available

Iain Aitchison with his Best Small Shop runner-up award from Longwell Records or online from https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/home with a £1 booking fee. Iain is also celebrating Longwell Records’ success at the national Best Small Shops Competition, which saw the Keynsham store named the second best small shop in the country beating more than 600 entrants to the runner-up title at an awards ceremony at the Palace of Westminster on November 13.

Charity quiz welcomes record numbers A record sum was raised for a Keynsham charity as it challenged the community to test their general knowledge at its annual quiz night. Keynsham and District Mencap Society welcomed 96 people to the event at St Dunstan’s Church hall on November 11 – the biggest attendance yet. They split into 19 teams to tackle quiz master Kit Kettel’s mix of questions on sport, film, music, royal trivia and more. Volunteers ran a bar and there was also a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals, including Tesco Brislington, Pomegranate, Longwell Records, Blossom Acupuncture, Lisa O’Brien, Sue Jeffery, the Yendalls and Helen Duckett from Keynsham. The evening raised more than £900 for the charity in total. Keynsham Mencap fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “We were really pleased to see lots

Villages’ art trail draws the crowds by Ros Anstey The first weekend of November saw a flurry of art lovers touring the 13 venues in villages across the Cam Valley, just south of Bath and Bristol, for the annual Cam Valley Arts Trail. Karen George, chair of the group, said: “It is lovely to see over 400 visitors enjoying local, affordable arts at our arts trail. Also I’d like to thank all our advertisers and grant providers, without whom we would struggle to put on such a wide-ranging community arts trail.” This year, as well as some of the more traditional arts the exhibition included a macro photographer, Simon Carder, and a sculptor who uses vegetables, Anna Hurwitz. Celebrations of Keynsham’s 40year twinning link with Libourne have continued this year with a visit to the French town, where the guests were treated to a civic reception with the mayor. A group of 18 travelled to France to mark the anniversary, following last year’s visit to Keynsham by a group from Libourne. The trip included a number of official twinning events as well as plenty of time to sightsee and spend time with their hosts. Libourne, in the south-west of France, is a wine-making town surrounded by vineyards and their guests enjoyed many opportunities to find out more about the industry and try their produce. This included a visit to the newly-opened Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, a huge wine museum that uses state-of-theart technology to teach visitors about wine from all over the world. There was also a tour of a chateau and vineyard called Chateau de la Rivière. Other

outings included trips to St Emilion, Arcachon, medieval Saint Macaire and the castle at Roquetaillade. The group was officially welcomed by Mayor Philippe Buisson at an official gathering in the town hall where Keynsham Twinning Association chair Carole Duckett was presented with a commemorative medal and a hoodie. Afterwards the guests joined a market held to celebrate the twinning link’s anniversary, where they ran a stall offering English produce, gifts and Pimms This was followed by music and dancing. A member of the Keynsham group said: “Libourne is a lovely town in a great part of France, with so much to do and see. The people are all friendly and fun to be with, and make huge efforts to ensure that we have a great time. Long may twinning continue!” For more on Keynsham and District Twinning Association and its activities, visit www. keynshamtwinning.org

Talk takes group into underwater world with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Members will hear a talk on hummingbirds at the group’s Yuletide Medley meeting Photo: Martin Farrell

K

eynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust enjoyed two events on consecutive days in November, writes chairman Dave Sage. The Friday evening talk was given by Michael Pitts, a worldrenowned diver. Freshly returned from working in Costa Rica and recovering from a tooth extraction the previous day, Michael showed great fortitude in delivering a brilliant talk to a capacity audience of more than 70 people of all ages. Snorkelling in the Baltic as an eight-year-old got him hooked, then diving trips as a young soldier led to him into commercial diving in the Mediterranean and Red Sea, where he learned the skills of underwater filming. He got his big break when asked to film for Anglia TV on one of its Survival programmes, using a £30,000 underwater camera! Since then, he has filmed all over the world. He showed us clips from The Private Life of Plants (David Attenborough); Oceans (BBC) as well as from Walking with Dinosaurs/Beasts/Sea Monsters, a series which attracted 25 million viewers worldwide and which saw Michael filming incredible models of moeritherium – an extinct aquatic ancestor of elephants. There was also footage from Galapagos, in which he filmed

marine iguanas and hammerhead sharks, and Sharks (BBC), including the fearsome tiger and bull sharks! Finally, he showed us harrowing clips of birds, turtles and seals, dead or dying from ingesting or becoming entangled in discarded plastic. These were produced for the film A Plastic Ocean, screened by the group at The Space in Keynsham in 2017, and for Blue Planet II (David Attenborough), which have sparked an exponential increase in awareness and action regarding the global plastic pollution crisis. Michael has seen a huge increase in plastics in the world’s oceans over the years. For our part we are currently organising a beach clean event in Portishead, scheduled for summer 2019. A follow-up audience discussion, in conjunction with Keynsham Kindness Festival,

highlighted the fact that we should not feed bread to ducks in the park (it is unhealthy for the ducks, attracts rats and possibly pollutes the pond water) and solar lights should be switched off overnight because they disturb nocturnal wildlife. People felt strongly that the town council should reinstate signs in the park reminding people of the problems caused by feeding ducks with bread. The month’s second event was a walk the following afternoon around the grounds of the old Cadbury’s chocolate factory, following the south bank of the River Avon. Organised as part of the Keynsham Kindness Festival, six of us were lucky to spend two hours without the strong winds or heavy rain of the previous 24 hours! In addition to numerous herons (including a family of four, probably from the heronry

Our final event of 2018 is our members’ evening on Friday, December 14, at the Baptist Hall in the High Street, starting at 7.30pm. There will be three talks given by members: two with a Caribbean flavour, including the beauty of hummingbirds and a multimedia presentation on the wildlife of Costa Rica, the third featuring “the life of an ecologist”. There will be a wildlife quiz, festive refreshments on sale, as well as the usual great range of secondhand books, Christmas items, cards and bird food. A fitting way to end another fantastic year!

Dementia singing group reaches out Organisers of regular singing sessions for people with dementia are reaching out to the many others they know are living with the condition in Keynsham and Saltford. The Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (KDAA) says it is keen to connect with people who haven’t yet had the benefit of attending one of their twice-monthly Music for the Mind sessions. The sessions provide a much-valued social activity for those diagnosed with dementia as well as their carers, offering conversation, refreshments and singing exercises led by a professional facilitator. The group says estimates show there will be around 1,000 people living with dementia in Keynsham and Saltford in just

A Music for the Mind session in Keynsham over a decade and they want to support more of the people affected today. Chairman of the DAA Alan Hale said: “This activity has proved very popular with

those who attend but our concern is that there must be many more people out there in the community that we are not reaching currently, who with their carer

might be leading a somewhat reclusive lifestyle when Music for the Mind would provide an outing and also some company a couple of times a month. “Transport might be an issue for them and currently we work with Keynsham and District Dial A Ride who bring a few people from a couple of the nursing homes and I am sure that we can look at using Dial A Ride to collect some individual couples from their house or flat.” Anyone who is interested in finding out more can contact Keynsham DAA on 0117 983 7923 or email dementiafriendly keynsham@gmail.com The sessions are held on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 10.30am to 12.15pm at St Dunstan’s Church Hall, Keynsham.

Christmas crafts to bring pupils and care home residents together Pupils from a Keynsham primary school will be getting stuck into Christmas crafts alongside residents at a local care home. Youngsters from St Keyna Primary School have been paired up with Mostyn Lodge care home in Kelston Road as part of an intergenerational initiative to transform the lives of older members of the community. The pupils and residents will be working together to make Christmas decorations and paint seasonal pictures to display in the care home, as well as using iPads to make digital collages and to share Christmas memories.

The Access All Ages initiative involves care homes across Bristol and is run by Alive, a charity that aims to enrich the lives of older people in care and train their carers. Alive’s chief executive Simon

Bernstein said: “Alive’s mission is to put older people’s wellbeing at the heart of care. Our intergenerational projects have transformed the lives of many socially isolated older people in Bristol care homes during the past five years and have helped forge lasting relationships between the generations. We want all older people in care to be connected to younger people in their community, and Alive is at the forefront of driving this change forwards.” Violet, a resident at a care home taking part in Access All Ages, said after her first session: “This is better than a Christmas

Day. This is the happiest I’ve been in ages.” Marta Haire, the care home activities coordinator, added: “It is so heart-warming to see how the children interact with the residents, I can’t tell you how much joy it brings our residents to see the young children. It’s also lovely for the staff to see the interaction, it makes our jobs feel so worthwhile and rewarding, to see the residents so happy.” In the long term, Alive hopes to link every care home with a local school, starting in the Bristol area and then rolling out the initiative to surrounding counties.

THE BIG PICTURE Film review with Harrison Thorne

Muddled plotline makes this entry a little less ‘fantastic’

T

Crowds watch last year’s Keynsham Mummers Play at the New Inn

Boxing Day dance returns for 41st year Keynsham Mummers Play will return to town this Boxing Day for its 41st year. The annual spectacle is produced by Bristol Morris Men, who first revived the traditional dance for a modern audience in 1977. This year the cast includes three people who appeared in that first performance, two of whom have danced in Keynsham every year since then. The traditional folk dance includes characters such as the

Bold Slasher, the Doctor, Father Christmas and St George, and a transcript from a performance in 1822 was preserved by Joseph Hunter and later published in the English Folk Dance and Song Society’s journal in 1947. The play is now a firm fixture in Keynsham’s festive calendar and people can catch performances on Boxing Day in front of St John’s Church at 11am, at the Clock Tower at 11.30am and then at the New Inn at noon.

he first in the Fantastic Beasts series was an original, fun and exciting adventure in a different corner of the Harry Potter universe. The sequel, however, while bringing more familiar elements into the mix, loses some of the magic that made its predecessors so beloved. Eddie Redmayne returns as Newt Scamander, once again delivering a lovable performance that further propels the character to the heights of Harry, Ron and Hermione. His awkwardness and irresistible charm shine through the rather bleak narrative and he steals every scene he’s in. Other highlights of the returning cast are Katherine Waterson as Tina Goldstein and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, who both build upon their roles in unique and interesting ways. Miller in particular really comes into his own as a tortured and desperate boy yearning to find his place in this world. Credence is also the subject of the film’s shocking plot twist at the conclusion, meaning viewers will really want to keep their eye on him over the three further instalments that are proposed in this series. New cast members Jude Law and Johnny Depp as Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindlewald respectively both excel in their roles. Law in particular is perfectly cast as Dumbledore – his joyful humour, charm and gravitas in just the right moments

give the audience no trouble in immediately recognising him as a younger Michael Gambon or Richard Harris. Depp also is great as Grindlewald, going for a menacing and subdued performance instead of trying to top the extravagance of Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort. For me, though, it doesn’t quite beat Colin Farrell’s interpretation in the previous film but it is by no means a poor performance. The main flaw of the movie is its storyline. JK Rowling’s screenplay, while impressively expanding on lore, fails to provide a solid plotline for a film. Most of the film’s runtime is spent watching characters looking for other characters and it’s only for the last 20 minutes that anything of note does happen. Thankfully the final act is very well done, full of twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. If only the rest of the film was like it. David Yate’s direction, for the sixth time running, is superb. Once again he nails the look and feel of the movies, which provides a visual comfort to the audience due to its similarity with Yates’ Harry Potter films. However, in future instalments Yates would benefit from a much smaller ensemble cast to work with – with 11 primary characters in this film it is easy to become overstuffed with subplots and character moments that contribute to this instalment’s slightly messy feel.  3/5

A feast of festive food and gifts at market Don’t miss this year’s special Christmas Farmers’ Market at Keynsham’s Market Walk on December 8 from 9am-1pm. Come and support local farmers and food producers at this time of year by stocking up on finest quality cheeses, ciders and ales and perhaps order yourself a local turkey from nearby Chewton Farm. We have also expanded our craft section and so jewellery, textile gifts and natural handmade skincare products are all available as locally made stocking fillers. The market continues to expand with the new “Simply Raw”

unpasteurized milk stall as well as vegan cheese from Sumear – the perfect gift for vegans in the family and it tastes great! We also have a new vegetarian savouries stall with a Chilean twist plus the Mexicanstyle Yoly Guacamole. We are planning seasonal entertainment on the day and lots of special Christmas offers. The market will continue in January 2019 on the second Saturday of the month. For more updates on the market, sign up to our newsletter via our website www.somerset farmersmarkets.co.uk

Win dinner for two at Somer Dining!

Somerdale was always going to be a different kind of housing development – the chocolate factory and its grounds were more than just a place of work, they were somewhere the community could come together. Today, despite a huge transformation, people from across the town and beyond are still visiting the site for sports and entertainment, meaning Somerdale continues to serve more than solely those who live and work there. The former factory buildings – now the Chocolate Quarter – have been reinvented by St Monica Trust as a retirement community, but those behind the development have gone to some lengths to ensure there is plenty of opportunity to bring the generations together, nowhere more so than at the two restaurants, B Block and Somer Dining. Initially catering for lunchtime diners, those looking to indulge in a spot of afternoon tea and laying on a Sunday roast, Somer Dining is now opening its doors for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Head chef Gareth Cartledge and food development manager Adrian Kirikmaa have produced a menu that flies the flag for local produce and British cuisine – and the fact that Michelin-starred chef Josh Eggleton has had a hand in its creation has no doubt put Somer Dining on the radar of local foodies. In fact, the restaurant team has already welcomed a host of food-lovers to Keynsham for a three-course cocoa-themed dinner as part of the Bristol Food Connections

medium-rare just as ordered and served with crisp handcut chips and peppercorn sauce. Full up, my partner admitted defeat before dessert but that didn’t stop him grabbing a spoon when my chargrilled peach mille-feuille and nougat parfait arrived – a lovely combination of warm and cold with different textures. Somer Dining is open for lunch from noon until 3pm, for afternoon tea from 3pm to 5pm, for dinner from 6pm to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays and from noon to 4pm for Sunday roasts. Call 0117 363 7120. WIN dinner for two!

The restaurant at Somer Dining, top; steak and chips, above left; a smoked mackerel starter, right festival earlier this year. With a distinct gastropub flavour, dishes on the menu include chicken and ham hock pie, handpressed burgers, homemade pasta and traditional fish and chips using ingredients from the likes of Bristol Fruit Market’s Total Produce, Tovey’s fishmongers in Easton, and Tetbury’s Shipton Mill. There is also a wide range of wines, beers – including Bath Ales – and spirits available at the bar. When Keynshamvoice visited on a dark, wet Saturday night in November, the smart dining room with its elegant art deco touches was a welcoming spot to settle down, with a number of

couples and a large group already doing the same. With a picky pescetarian on one side of the table and a committed meat eater on the other, there was plenty for both of us to choose from. I started with mushrooms on sourdough, a garlicky mixture full of flavour and texture while my partner tucked into smoked mackerel accompanied by a tasty pickled cucumber, red onion, potato and horseradish salad. For my main I went for seabass fillet that came perched on top of a creamy pea, lemon and herb risotto while my partner went for a very generous piece of Somerset rump steak, cooked

Send your answers to Somer Dining Competition, 16 Chandag Road, Keynsham, BS31 1NR, along with your name, address and phone number. The closing date for entries is December 12, after which a winner will be picked at random and notified by phone shortly after. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL

When shoppers bid Keynsham Cattle Market

were a regular opportunity for the farming community to meet and socialise. The Talbot next door provided essential refreshment and its licensing hours were adjusted to meet the demand. Sales were held for cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. For much of the market’s existence, the livestock arrived after being herded along the nearby roads. Until the late 1950s, after the sales many animals were driven down Bath Hill East and along Avon Road to the goods yard at Keynsham station to be transported by rail. Eventually, the bustle and excitement of Keynsham livestock market was overtaken by the trend towards larger centres and the auctioneer’s hammer fell for the last time on December 29, 1975. The site became vacant, although the pens remained for some time until it was finally sold for redevelopment; in 1986 construction started on the Homeavon House retirement

For many years the land on Bath Road, just beyond The Talbot, was home to Keynsham’s livestock market. From 1923 to its closure in 1975 this was run by Cooper & Tanner. They took over the business from auctioneer Albert Ford and leased the site from Georges Brewery. During part of 1924, sales were limited to poultry, as all livestock movement was banned due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. After that, the market became established and, like all such places, it provided much more than a sale-yard; market days

HISTORY SOCIETY

for their Christmas dinner at cattle market

From left: the cattle market in 1933; in later years animals arrived by lorry; a chance to bid for your Christmas dinner; the market in the 1960s homes which stand there today. The photographs give an impression of the atmosphere of a crowded market. The original pens made from hurdles were later replaced by sturdy steel ones and transport by road vehicles became the norm. In contrast to the plucked, wrapped and use-by-date

stamped turkeys that most people buy today for their Christmas dinner, one has to go back only 60 or 70 years to find birds that were live when they were sold, ready for the buyer to kill and pluck themselves. Falling snow was probably more likely then as well!

The society’s next Monday evening talk is on December 10. Representing the ss Great Britain Trust, Ian Caskie will be speaking on “ss Great Britain – from Launch to Relaunch.” His talk covers the ship itself as well as the story of various voyages and the experiences of

the passengers it carried across the Atlantic and to Australia. It promises to be an entertaining evening. The meeting will be at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall, Bristol Road, starting at 7.30pm. Members of Keynsham Rugby Club under-12s show off their new kit

Grants fund team’s new kit and a great night for charity Christmas has come early for two Keynsham community groups which have received £1,000 each from a local housebuilder. Keynsham and District Mencap Society will be putting the donation towards organising its annual dinner and auction evening, a major fundraising event for the charity, which takes place at Saltford Golf Club next March. Meanwhile, youngsters in Keynsham Rugby Club’s under12s team are now fully kitted out with a new strip thanks to their £1,000 gift. The cash came from Persimmon Homes Severn Valley’s Community Champions scheme, which invites charities and groups to apply for grants of up to £1,000 to match funds they have already raised themselves. Keynsham Mencap fundraiser Amanda Leonard and members of the society were invited along to the developer’s Charlton Place site to open a new showhome and receive their grant. Amanda said: “We are getting closer to achieving our goal to purchase a premises of our own. So far, we have raised more than £93,000 and hope to raise upwards of £100,000 by the end

BOOKS OF THE MONTH Merry Christmas and a happy new year from all at Keynsham Library!

Adult Fiction

Adult Fiction

A Shrouded Path by Sarah Ward This book is the latest in the series of crime novels that feature DC Connie Childs and her boss, DI Francis Sadler. Set in and around the peaks of Derbyshire, the story starts in 1957 when six school girls are spotted in the Derbyshire mist walking along the old train tracks and then through a dark railway tunnel called The Cutting. Only five appear on the other side. In the present day we meet Mina, who is visiting her dying mother who keeps making reference to Valerie and “find Valerie”. Then DC Childs is asked to investigate the death of an elderly woman from what appears to be natural causes. As the book progresses you realise everything seems to be pointing to that fateful day in 1957 and soon the investigation gets very close to home for one member of the team. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest offering from Sarah Ward. She has a brilliant sense of place and you can even feel the chill of the Peaks and the chilling atmosphere of the railway tunnel as you read. The story is pacey and DC Childs and her new partner DC Peter Dahl make for a great partnership. There are definitely twists and turns. A great winter read.

The Last Children of Tokyo by Yoko Tawada Yoko Tawada manages in a short 138 pages to plunge us into a futuristic Tokyo, a dystopian place where the politics can’t be trusted, where the interdiction is increasing every day. In this future the elderly, like Yoshiro, have no idea if they will die one day and consider themselves young elderly even in their nineties. As all the adults of his generation, he looks after his great-grandchild, Mumei, who has so many health problems his future is uncertain. The soil is contaminated and the food is scarce, the government is having to take the decision to close its frontiers to the outside world. This book invites you to think about the environmental impact we have now and the risks we are creating for the future generations. I would suggest you have a look at the cover of the book, which is illustrated by Harriet Lee Merrion, a young award-winning illustrator based in Bristol who has a promising career in front of her. Once again we meet the Brown family and their newest member, Paddington, the very welltravelled bear from Peru. On the hunt for a birthday present for his 100-year-old Aunt Lucy, Paddington spots a unique book in Mr Gruber’s bookshop and embarks on a series of jobs to help pay for it. However, when the book is stolen, Paddington and Mr Brown investigate. Somehow Paddington ends up in jail and further mishaps occur. Starring Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins as Mr and Mrs Brown and with a delicious turn by Hugh Grant, this is a fab family movie.

Children’s Fiction

Sproutzilla vs Christmas by Tom Jamieson and Mike Byrne Aaaaah – he is mean and green and he is about to ruin Christmas! Jack refuses to eat Brussels sprouts – in fact he hates them and can think of nothing worse. Well, there is when his parents bring home Sproutzilla. He grows and grows and becomes the meanest vegetable going. He stomps around smashing everything in his path and there is even a real threat that he could eat Father Christmas. Jack has to come to the rescue. I will not spoil the story but it is a great and rather smelly adventure!

The Queen’s Present by Steve Antony It is Christmas Eve and the Queen faces a dilemma – she still has not found the perfect present for the little princes and princess. Luckily she has very good connections and none other than Father Christmas is on hand to help her. Off they fly, all around the world in the search for the perfect present! This book is beautifully illustrated as the pair tour the world and visit special places such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris; the Statue of Liberty in New York; the Himeji Castle in Japan and even the North Pole. There is a delightful stop right at the end.

‘Stock the sleigh’ for  animals  in  need Animal lovers are being asked to help the thousands of animals that will be cared for by the RSPCA in the South West over the festive period. Last year, the charity’s 24hour cruelty hotline received 3,804 calls between December 1 and 31 from people in the region concerned about animals in distress. This included 270 in Bristol and a massive 713 in Somerset. The RSPCA took in nearly 5,500 animals during December 2017 providing a bed, food and veterinary care to both pets and wild animals. The charity has now launched its Stock The Sleigh appeal, which invites supporters to donate money, from £3 for a toy to £48 for veterinary care, medicines and hydration, for example. The charity says it costs more

than £750,000 on average to run an animal centre, such as its West Hatch centre in Somerset, for a year. RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said: “We would not be able to help the thousands of animals we rescue, rehome and rehabilitate every Christmas without the public’s generous support. “What people perhaps don’t realise is that after each animal is brought to warmth and safety, they sometimes face weeks and months of vital care, whether that is someone to hand-rear a kitten through the night, vital surgery for an abused dog, rehabilitation for an injured gull, or simply a warm bed and food for a neglected or abandoned animal.” To find out more, visit the RSPCA’s virtual sleigh at www. rspca.org.uk/stockthesleigh

Bake Off’s Briony goes back to school Ginger and Honey Cake Briony has prepared a special Christmas recipe for Voice readers – a delicious ginger cake with honey icing and gingerbread on the top. Ingredients 250g unsalted butter 200g golden caster sugar 50g dark muscovado sugar 280g golden syrup 200g clear honey 60g stem ginger, grated 20g syrup from stem ginger jar 500g self-raising flour 4 tsp ground ginger 3 medium eggs 330ml whole milk Icing 200g unsalted butter, softened 400g icing sugar, sifted 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tbsp syrup from stem ginger jar Dash of milk to loosen Method 1. Oven on to 160°C fan. Grease and line three 8-inch cake tins. 2. Butter, sugars, golden syrup, honey, stem ginger and syrup into large pan and heat until melted and smooth. 3. Flour and ground ginger into large bowl. Whisk to combine. 4. Milk and eggs into jug. Whisk to combine. 5. Pour butter mixture into flour. Mix to combine. Pour in milk mixture. Mix to combine.

6. Divide into tins. Bake for 30-35 minutes until skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool. 7. Make icing. Beat butter until pale and smooth. Add icing sugar and beat for five minutes. Add syrup. Beat again. Add milk to loosen if too stiff. 8. Place one cake on plate/board. Spread over icing or pipe on. Add next layer. Repeat. Spread icing on top of cake (or pipe it on). Add sprinkles or other decorations to finish. For inspirational recipes and more see www.brionybakes. co.uk or Instagram @brionymaybakes

Great British Bake Off contestant Briony Williams, who made it to the final four in this year’s show, took a step back in time in November when she revisited her primary school in Bristol to judge a baking contest. A whole heap of effort and more than a little dusting of icing sugar went into the 150-plus bakes from the children inspired to take up the Great Elmlea Bake Off challenge at Elmlea Junior School in Westbury-on-Trym. Briony, who wowed local viewers with a Bristol-themed “selfie-biscuit” featuring the Clifton Suspension Bridge and hot-air balloons among her other bakes, told our sister paper Henleaze and Westbury Voice: “It’s so lovely to see children baking, getting involved and trying something creative. I think Bake Off’s been a really positive influence on younger people, getting them into the kitchen and trying things out.” After the winners were presented with awards, pupils asked Briony questions about her experience of being on the show. She revealed that her most challenging bake was the chandelier as there were so many ribbons and so little time. Then, disaster struck when one of the cameramen knocked some of the biscuits onto the floor and they broke – but it was all fine in the end.

Her favourite bake was the Alice in Wonderland pie she made in Pastry Week: “All the practices at home went really badly but it came together on the day and I got Star Baker, which I’m very proud of,” she says. Briony used to bake when she was a child with her mum and nan, who taught baking to young people, but only really started focusing on baking about five years ago, making birthday cakes for friends’ children. Briony, who lives in Horfield, added: “I didn’t tell anyone when I applied [for the show]. I sent off the application after watching Bake Off last year. It’s been the most incredible experience and I have nothing bad to say about it – even though I cried loads!” The former QEH languages teacher said Bake Off has opened up new opportunities and she is booked for events next year, including CarFest and various food festivals. She has also had a lot of positive feedback for the recipes featured on Instagram, Twitter and her website, especially the vegan ones, and is keen to bring them all together in a cookbook. “I’m a really big fan of vegan baking and there’s not much out there,” she said. “It’s only taken me five years to go from not being able to bake much to being on Bake Off. I want to show that if you get the basics right, you can experiment with flavours.”

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

with Ryan Morton, Senior Pastor at Keynsham Elim Church

On the trail of life

T

he journey we travel through life can very often leave us exhausted and weighed down and too heavy to continue. One of my passions is backpacking in the countryside, along rivers, through woodland and mountains. It’s on the trail through these places that I find a real freedom and release from the high pressures of a busy and stressful life. Personally, it’s where I really connect with God. Hopefully, in 2020 myself and a few friends will be travelling to Maine in the US to hike 130 miles of beautiful yet perhaps challenging terrain on the latter part of the famous Appalachian Trail – or AT

As I’ve been hiking through the countryside and mountains, I’ve learnt something that actually will help us hike through the trail of life – as we are travelling through life, we can end up carrying way too much and begin to get overloaded and weighed down.

trail for short. Now, the thing is, when you are backpacking through 130 miles of countryside, there are no shops or hotels. So, whatever you need you will have to carry on your back in your backpacks. When you are hiking 15 to 20 miles each day over seven to eight days that is very taxing on your body. You need to be fit and strong, therefore we need to train for such an occasion and be trail-ready. One thing I have learned along the way is that when you walk for hours with a heavy backpack your body really feels it, and eventually your back, shoulders and legs almost kind of rebel and scream at you to stop and lighten the load. Through experience I have

learned that you only need to carry what you really need and obviously what you can manage – too much and you’re not going to progress or go forward. As I’ve been hiking through the countryside and mountains, I’ve learnt something that actually will help us hike through the trail of life. As we are travelling through life, we can end up carrying way too much and begin to get overloaded and weighed down. I believe that, as one day I went through my backpack to take out any unnecessary stuff, we have to put down our backpack of life and really look to see if we can lighten the load so we can continue on the trail of life. That can be very challenging but nonetheless it has

to be done so that we don’t burn out and feel crushed by the heavy burdens. Sometimes we just have to let go and release things and commitments to lighten our load, because we live in a world where we seem to take on too much and carry too much Take a tip. Take a rest and lighten your load and your life’s journey will be more enjoyable and swifter and have a meaningful purpose. On the flipside, there is one thing you do need on the trail and, I believe, on life’s trail – we need someone on board and he is the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the way the truth and the life. In Him we find that purpose, true life, new life and reason to live again. Why not, if you’ve never done so before, ask Jesus into your heart and begin a new walk on the trail he has for you and remember we can cast all our cares and heavy burdens onto him because he cares for us.

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

M

ore than 30 people turned out for the November walk from Keynsham to the Bath Soft Cheese Co shop at Kelston and back. It was perfect walking weather as we set off from the Memorial Park cafe heading along the River Avon towards Saltford. Continuing along the cycle path we crossed the River Avon and headed along the river to Kelston Mills and on to the Bath Cheese Shop, where we stopped for refreshment. After a disjointed continuation of the walk, we headed back past Saltford, some stopping at the Bird in Hand for further refreshment, others taking various routes back to Keynsham It was a lovely walk, organised

by Mike Stone, just a shame we had to return in splintered groups.

Bowlers celebrate the season’s successes

While it is closed season on the green, the social side of Keynsham Bowls Club continues unabated, writes our correspondent. Early in November nearly 60 members enjoyed a quiz with a difference – it had a bingo theme – and the Social Committee provided a first-class ploughman’s supper. The next event was the annual presentation lunch, which took place at Knowle Golf Club – a great venue where good food was enjoyed by nearly 70 members. After the meal came the presentation of the trophies. At the start of the season, 89 members entered competitions in 19 different events, which produced a total of 461 separate entries – statistics by courtesy of our competitions secretary Martin Moore. A number of members won more than one trophy but pride of place must go to Jan Iles, who had to visit the trophy table on five occasions.

Trophy winners at Keynsham Bowling Club’s presentation lunch There was one little hiccup when the trophy for the winner of the Australian Pairs went astray. It was found later under the table – a case of gone missing “down under”. The annual general meeting, which took place in the club house, started with the 70 members present standing in silence to remember those

friends that we had lost during the year. Reports were received from the various club executive members and the managers with responsibility for the running of the various aspects of the club’s life. The club could not exist without the hard work put in by these good folk. Towards the end of the meeting the outgoing captains left the

top table and handed over responsibility to the incoming skippers Mo Dickinson and Carm Riccio. John Mead stood down as the president, having held the position for 15 years, and he was succeeded by Don Rees. Joan Harvey was made a life member for her work as the ladies’ fixture secretary, a role she held for 20 years.

New pitch barrier removes obstacles to football club’s premier division goal A football club eyeing promotion for next season has unveiled a new crowd barrier at its grounds. Saltford FC is aiming for a spot in the Somerset County League Premier Division, which means the club’s pitch must meet certain requirements. With a £3,407.50 grant from Saltford Parish Council and financial support from Saltford Sports Club, where Saltford’s matches are played, the old rope barrier has now been replaced with a more professional structure – just hours before the team took to the pitch for a game against Frys FC. Phil Saunder, chair of Saltford FC, said: “Financial planning for the barrier started in January 2018 when it appeared that our First Team were heading for a top-two finish in their Somerset County League division, which would normally have led to promotion into the Premier Division where this type of barrier is a requirement. Eventually we did

Members of Saltford FC, including chair Phil Saunder, with Saltford Parish councillors Chris Warren and Phil Harding and staff from Keynsham Fencing and Landscaping finish second but due to league restructuring we were denied promotion. After the parish council agreed to support us in March we secured the other funding we needed and placed the order. Thanks to Martyn and John from Keynsham Fencing and Landscaping the barrier was installed with hours to spare

before our cup match against Frys in early October – it must have been a lucky omen as we went on to win 1-0! Let’s hope it continues to spur us on for the rest of the season and gain the promotion we deserve.” The barrier also cuts down on the time needed to prepare the ground before matches and

gives the club the opportunity to display sponsors’ advertising boards around the pitch, which brings the club income. The funding from Saltford Parish Council comes from a pot set aside each year to provide grants to support initiatives that benefit the village’s residents.

Keynsham Firsts win three but face shortage of games

Of Keynsham Rugby Club’s four scheduled First Team games since the last report, the local side came away with three wins and a loss, writes our correspondent. Disappointingly, two of the wins came about by default – this is not Keynsham’s fault but a lack of games does impact on the club’s finances. In a poor game not helped by the conditions, with blustery winds and almost incessant drizzle, the black and ambers defeated a brave Cullompton team by 28-11, picking up a much-needed four league points. Both teams were guilty of trying to be too expansive and the errors mounted up from both sides. They were 10-6 ahead at half

time courtesy of a try from back-row Joe Clements and a penalty and conversion from Sam Challenger. The visitors went ahead through a try by their hooker, but another penalty by Challenger gave the hosts the lead again. This was extended by 15 points in the last 15 minutes, with two tries from skipper Jack Weston and a conversion and long-range penalty from Challenger doing the business. The next game was an away loss to Devonport Services. Playing against a strong wind in the first half they turned round just five points adrift, 7-12, their points coming from a try by debutant winger Jack Jenkins, converted by Challenger. This

good start was destroyed by slack play allowing the home side to move 23-7 ahead. The local boys regrouped and had the better of the last 20 minutes and closed the gap with a try by Matt Withey. They continued to press and had the option of a very kickable penalty, which would have brought them close to a losing bonus; they chose to find touch near the corner but the home side’s defence held firm and despite their best efforts did not get another opportunity to score. Final score 23-12. Next opponents were to be Clevedon in the Bristol Combination Cup, but last year’s winners could not raise a side so Keynsham progressed by default. The following week was a repeat; this time it was Coney Hill that could not raise a team for the South West 1 league fixture. Five league points to Keynsham. There were other matches played, the most notable of these being the U18s who progressed two rounds in the National Cup. Drawn for some reason in the Midlands section, they travelled

55 to Hereford and beat a wellfancied and well-drilled Hereford team, who were somewhat shocked by the force that was Keynsham on the day. Keynsham won 31-10 with tries from Matt Carr (two), Harry Stratton, Luke Rolfe and Joe Concannon; Carr added three conversions. This gave them a home tie against Bromsgrove, which they won 19-10. In this game they failed to even approach the quality that was achieved against Hereford but nevertheless worked hard enough to beat a competent side. Carr, Stratton and Rolfe bagged tries and there was a conversion apiece for Carr and Harrison Murphy. Their next match will be a toughie, as they travel to Northampton or Leicester for the next round.

Ks put themselves back in thick of the race for promotion KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field Keynsham Town FC are at last showing last season’s form on a consistent basis, with eight league wins out of their last nine games lifting them to second place in the Toolstation Western League Division One table. After an unlucky 1-0 reverse away to Chard Town in a game where the home keeper was the man of the match, the Ks moved on to another away game at Bishop Sutton in the Les Phillips Cup 1st Round. The game was decided in the last 10 minutes of the first half, when the Ks’ dominance was rewarded by goals from Tom Knighton and James Ollis, and they ran out comfortable 2-0 winners. Keynsham were on the road (or rails to be exact, as the players and supporters travelled by train) again four days later, as they visited Warminster Town and came home with an excellent 3-1 win. Tom Knighton put the Ks ahead with a first-half header, but the hosts scored a “Route One” equaliser just after the break. This didn’t knock Keynsham off their stride, though, and a Mike Grist header was followed by a James Ollis shot to secure the points. A week later saw the Ks back at Crown Fields, as they ran out 2-1 winners against Wincanton Town in a tight game. Mike Grist again showed his power in the air to give Keynsham the lead with a brave header from a corner in the 37th minute. Wincanton grabbed an equaliser on the hour, but Crown Fields erupted with 10 minutes to go as local hero Matt Brown popped up with the winner, his first goal

for 10 weeks in what has been a rare lean spell for the Ks’ goal machine. A trip to lowly Portishead Town followed, and Keynsham came away with a convincing 4-0 victory. Harley Purnell scored his first goal of the season on 20 minutes, and second-half efforts from Craig Wilson, Tom Knighton and the revitalised Matt Brown made the scoreline a realistic reflection of Keynsham’s superiority. Next up was a tough-looking visit to promotion rivals Wells City, and another three points were won on the road with a comfortable 3-1 win. The Ks struck three times in the last 10 minutes of the first half, as Danny Spill, James Ollis and Matt Brown were all on target. Although the hosts pulled a goal back midway through the second period from a defensive error, only the woodwork and Wells’ excellent goalkeeper prevented a cricket score. In other news, the club’s Player of the Month for October was Cameron Shorney. The management team of John Allen, Russell Holt and Jamie Price said: “Between us as a management team we found this a hard decision to come to, as the team has performed very well during this period. However, Cam fully deserves this recognition – it is no coincidence that our form has picked up since we started playing Cam in front of our back four, giving him the responsibility to get us playing from the middle of the park. “He has also been brilliantly aided and abetted by captain Harley Purnell and Adey Harvey, with the three of them playing a big role in our recent form. We all know the ability Cam possesses, but by his own admission we knew he had to work on the physical demands of playing in the centre of midfield. He has certainly improved in that department, but it’s the moments of sheer quality he has brought to the team, scoring critical goals at critical times all from free-kicks,

which added to his performances.” Club secretary Julian French said: “Although we had a bit of a disjointed start to the season, our current run has put us right in the thick of the promotion race. It was also gratifying for us to receive the October Division One Team of the Month Award – this is recognition for all the hard work the management team and players have put in. Our Reserves are also sitting on top of the Somerset County League Division One, so there should be an exciting few months ahead for the Ks! Merry Christmas and a prosperous (Premier Division) 2019 to all our loyal sponsors and supporters!” You can keep up with the The Ks have four home league games at Crown Fields over the next few weeks as follows: Saturday, December 8 Devizes Town – 3pm kick-off Saturday, December 15

Baseball club starts search for players Bristol Baseball Club is expanding and has begun a search for new players. The club, which is based at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham, is hoping to start a third team as well as a youth section next year. To get the ball rolling the club is hosting an introductory session on Sunday, December 2, at 2.30pm at Badminton Sports Hall in Bristol. The two-hour session is open to men, women and over-14s whatever their level of experience. The recruitment drive follows the club’s most successful season to date, which saw its Badgers team crowned top senior team at the recent Bristol Sports Awards. Currently it runs the defending champions the Badgers in the British Baseball

Federation AA league and the Bats in the South West Baseball League. Josh Williams-Trym, who won the most improved player of the year for the Bats, has just completed his rookie season. “I love the game and the club has helped me develop my skills and baseball knowledge over the last 12 months ever since I went to the intro session last year.” said Josh. “It’s a great sport and a great club which I can recommend without a second thought.” People interested can sign up for the session, which costs £5, at www.bristolbaseball.co.uk/ introduction-session/ Josh Williams-Trym, pictured far right, is joined by his fellow Bat rookies after a victory during the 2018 season
