Hundreds back call to save High Street bank from axe Hundreds of people are backing a campaign to keep Keynsham’s NatWest bank open after the banking giant RBS revealed the town’s branch would be one of almost 260 nationwide to be axed next year. RBS announced the bank, in the High Street, would close
on June 4, saying the “difficult decision” had been taken as more and more people switched to internet banking. The branch has seen transactions fall by 34 per cent since 2012 with 70 customers visiting the bank per week, said a spokesperson, adding that there

He said the decision should not be “taken lying down” and has launched a petition, which has so far been signed by more than 300 people online and has the backing of Keynsham Town Council. Mr Biddleston said: “It might well be the case that some of us do indeed bank online, but there are many Keynsham residents that cannot. At times, all of us need that face-to-face contact and this ought not mean a visit to a ‘remaining’ branch in Knowle West. “It certainly is not just our elderly residents that require face-to-face contact, many of our local businesses rely on the branch to deposit takings, we visit to arrange changes to accounts and mortgages, we rely on good managers with personal knowledge of the area that have understanding relationships with customers, and this list is by no means exhausted.” If the branch was to close, the nearest NatWest for Keynsham customers would be at Knowle – although no direct bus route is available, residents have pointed out. Comments on our Facebook page also questioned the decision to close a branch in a growing town like Keynsham. One user said: “I bet the majority of those 70 people [who visit the branch
per week] are older, who rely on the High Street bank. Seeing as Keynsham has a new residential home opening, surely the need will be increased.” Another added: “Three miles to Knowle doesn’t sound much but as far as I know there is no bus to Knowle from Keynsham so how will people with no car get there? “I think they will lose a lot of customers by shutting. With the current and proposed development in the town this seems like a short-sighted move. They should be canvassing for business not shutting up shop.” Keynsham Town Council voted in December to add its voice to calls to keep the branch open, writing to the CEO of the bank and making copies of the petition available to sign in the council offices in Temple Street. Town clerk Cheryl Scott said: “It’s not convenient for people to travel from Keynsham to Knowle. Contrary to the literature NatWest released, it is 5.6 miles by car and you can’t get there by public transport. We do not think they have taken into account the current and forecasted rate of population growth in Keynsham with the new developments nor the increase in business with some of the developments planned in the Pixash Lane area.

has changed radically over the last few years: since 2014, the number of customers using our branches across the UK has fallen by 40 per cent. Care trust welcomes
Cosmo Fry visits the Chocolate Quarter and the foundation stone he unveiled last year
Grandson son of Fry’s boss tours complex A man whose family founded Fry’s and moved their chocolate factory to Keynsham has visited the new £60 million development that has transformed the site. Cosmo Fry is the grandson of Cecil, who was the chairman of JS Fry and Sons from 1924 to 1952, overseeing the family business’s move from Bristol to Somerdale. On December 12, Mr Fry was given a tour of the Chocolate
Quarter the 1920s former factory buildings. The relationship between the Fry family and the Wills family, who founded St Monica Trust, dates back to the 19th century when they worked together on a campaign for a royal charter that led to the founding of Bristol University in 1909. During his tour, Mr Fry also visited the foundation stone bearing his family’s name, which he helped unveil last year.
Staff at the Chocolate Quarter have welcomed the medical team from St Peter’s Hospice to Keynsham. The charity has temporarily relocated its inpatient unit to St Monica Trust’s Charterhouse nursing home while its Brentry headquarters are completely rebuilt to create better facilities for patients and families. The charity expects to be at the Chocolate Quarter, at Somerdale, for 12 months, where its nurses and doctors will continue to provide specialist care. St Peter’s Hospice chief executive Simon Caraffi MBE said: “Relocating the inpatient unit to Charterhouse is allowing us to fulfil a long-held ambition to redevelop facilities and build a 21st-century hospice for Bristol. “St Monica Trust have leased us the space to help us rebuild and redesign the inpatient unit
while still providing the highest quality of care for the local community.”

Charterhouse is a 93-bed care home that offers 24-hour care and is part of St Monica Trust’s
£60 million retirement village redevelopment of the former chocolate factory, which also
includes 136 apartments. David Williams, chief executive of St Monica Trust, said: “We are very glad to welcome the inpatient unit into the wonderful new facilities that we have created here at Charterhouse. “It has been a great opportunity to join together with another Bristol institution to help them to continue to provide an essential service for the local community.” Over the next 20 years St Peter’s Hospice’s redeveloped unit in Brentry is expected to support 6,250 patients and around 18,500 relatives and friends. The total cost of the project is £6.53m, and the hospice’s Room to Care Appeal aims to secure the final £1.53m during the next 12 months. One arrest made after purse snatch Police investigating the theft of an elderly woman’s purse in a Keynsham shop say they have made a significant arrest. Officers released CCTV pictures of two women they wanted to trace following the incident in Iceland, Temple Street, on October 17. Keynshamvoice published the images in print and online, where they were viewed by more than 100,000 people on our Facebook page and police received several names as a result. One arrest has since been made, while another suspect has been identified. Police have thanked everyone who contacted them with information following the publication of the images.

Vandals have struck again at a public park in Keynsham, prompting the town council to look into fencing off the site ahead of a planned meeting on tackling rising antisocial behaviour. Two football pitches at Manor Road playing fields have been damaged by someone driving a vehicle across the ground on December 2, just weeks after a third pitch was targeted in the same way. The town council has contacted a specialist contractor to get the pitches repaired and back into use for the rest of the season while councillors also voted on December 12 to look into installing temporary fencing – with pedestrian access – to protect the site. At the same meeting, councillors also heard the Memorial Park bandstand had been damaged again and agreed to look at replacing the roof with more resistant material after
holes were cut in it with a sharp object in November. Measures have also been taken to restrict access to the roof, councillors were told. An appeal in December for a coordinated response to tackle a recent rise antisocial behaviour in the town prompted a number of residents and organisations including the police, Bath and North East Somerset Council officers and community groups to contact the town council and pledge their support. Town clerk Cheryl Scott said: “We will organise an initial meeting, in early January, and we are looking for the community to take over and decide how they would like to work together to find a solution.” A date has not yet been set for the meeting but will be publicised locally and online – anyone who would like to get involved can contact the council on 0117 986 8683.

Extra time to have say on town’s future Residents are being invited to form “friends” groups for each of Keynsham’s parks to join a review of local play areas. As part of Keynsham’s Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), which gives residents more power over shaping the town’s future, improvements to the eight play areas will be looked at. Residents are already forming a group to support Manor Road play area and now the town council is looking for members of the community to join groups for Teviot Road, Park Road, Upper Memorial Park, Lower Memorial Park, Kelston Road, Holmoak Road and Downfields play areas. A spokesperson said: “One of the things we have promised Keynsham’s young residents is that we would take a closer look at the future and improvement of the play areas in our area. In order to get this moving, we would love to see each play area have its own ‘friends’ group,
and that each of these groups can be represented at the NDP Recreation and Leisure Topic Group meetings.” Meanwhile, the deadline for the public consultation on the NDP has been extended to January 19 with paper copies available from the town council office at 15-17 Temple Street and the online version still open via the NDP page at www.keynshamtc.gov.uk The spokesperson added: “We’ve had a very good response so far – more than 750 hard copies – but are keen to ensure everyone gets the chance to have their say about the future development of Keynsham. We are aware that some residences in Keynsham didn’t receive theirs until recently so we are keeping the consultation open until midJanuary. Everyone who either lives or works in Keynsham can fill in the survey and we would like to encourage you all to do so.”
As well as prompting discussion, the council says a number of people have asked why the issue of the authority’s precept – its share of each household’s council tax bill – is left until the end of the questionnaire. The spokesperson said that the main focus of the consultation was on how Keynsham should develop over the next 20 years in light of the planned increase in housing and to gather residents’ views. They added: “The final questions concern one possible action the town council ‘could’ take as a local government organisation in response to previous requests to provide further community facilities in Keynsham. “As you may be aware, the town council put in a bid for the fire station but was unsuccessful. Before the town council is given permission to draw down a public works loan from the
Department of Communities and Local Government, it has to have consulted with the residents on whether they would agree to an increase in precept to part-fund the loan repayments. “The town council could have sent round a separate survey on this issue, but decided to save costs by including it in the community consultation. It was placed at the end as it didn't want this particular topic to unduly influence any of the other responses.” Completed questionnaires can be handed in at the town council office, library, Community at 67, Keynsham Leisure Centre, Somerdale Pavilion reception area or in the Freepost envelope provided with delivered copies. Police have released this CCTV image
CCTV image released after robbery in park Police are asking the public to help identify a man after a teenager was robbed in Keynsham Memorial Park. Officers have released a CCTV image taken from a nearby petrol station. The 17-year-old victim was talking to another young man in the park between 5.30pm and 6.45pm on Saturday, October 21, when the other man claimed to have a knife and demanded cash. No weapon was seen in the incident. The suspect is described as
of mixed race, about 6ft 3ins tall and of athletic build, with a moustache. The victim believed him to be aged around 17, but said he looked older. He was wearing a green jacket, black Nike fleece jogging bottoms and trainers. Tricia rises to the Inca Trail challenge An adventurous Keynsham grandmother has completed a tough trek along the Inca Trail in memory of her husband Richard, raising thousands of pounds for research into the condition that claimed his life. Tricia Hembrough travelled to Peru and hiked at heights of up to 4,200 metres on her way to the famous Macchu Picchu citadel. Having already conquered Kilimanjaro and the Cotopaxi volcano, altitude sickness was Tricia’s major concern and she said she found breathing “really huff-and-puff” at times above 3,000 metres. There were also moments when the hikers had to climb on hands and knees and, as the oldest member of the group, Tricia said she felt she was entitled to feel a little more strain! Her most memorable moment was watching the sun rise through the Sun Gate before entering the cloud forest and

Tricia’s trek took place in what would have been her and husband Richard’s golden wedding anniversary year. Richard lived with Parkinson’s for 30 years and took part in experimental treatment for the condition. Richard was passionate about research into finding new treatments and, ultimately, a cure, said Tricia, whose trek has
raised £4,000 for Parkinson’s UK. A spokesperson for the Bath and District branch of the charity said: “Tricia wears her alpaca jacket which reminds her of the skills and traditions of the Inca way of life. She is now going back to her famous jam and pickle-making, which is sold on behalf of Parkinson’s UK Bath and District branch. Congratulations and well done, Tricia. We admire your courage, and feel privileged to have
you working so hard for the organisation.” Tricia says she isn’t hanging up her walking boots and would like to tackle Costa Rica’s coastto-coast hike as well as exploring the Grand Canyon on foot. January, 2018 A woman who “puts her heart and soul” into tackling loneliness and isolation in the Keynsham area has been honoured with an award for her work in the community. Barbara Thomson founded Somerdale Souls social group in January 2016 to offer people activities and the chance to meet a host of friendly faces at Somerdale Pavilion once a month. Her efforts have had such an impact that she was nominated for the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Pride Awards by seven different people. Barbara said the nominations came as a surprise and she was delighted each of her supporters could attend the awards ceremony at Police and Fire Headquarters in Portishead on December 5. She said: “The whole reason my group is called Somerdale Souls is because I put my heart and soul into it. I just hope that more people now understand the issues I try to help, such as loneliness and homelessness.” Barbara was one of 16 “silent

Voters asked for views as proposals to Residents in Keynsham and Saltford are being asked for their views on plans to redraw the political map across Bath and North East Somerset. As part of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s proposals, many voters in both communities would see changes that could affect the ward they live in and the councillors they vote for. The commission has unveiled proposals following public consultation that would see the number of B&NES councillors reduced from 65 to 59 and the number of council wards reduced by one to 36. A public consultation has begun and will run until February 19, with maps and the commission’s report available online and at council One-Stop Shops. Saltford would see one of the biggest shake-ups, with the ward expanding to cover a greater

redraw political map unveiled area, taking in much of the current Farmborough ward to encompass Chewton Keynsham, Compton Dando, Queen Charlton and Corston, and the northern part of the current Bathavon West ward to include Newton St Loe. It would continue to be represented by two councillors. The commission’s report on its proposed changes said: “Respondents argued that Saltford should not be combined with Keynsham but with the parishes of Corston, Compton Dando and Newton St Loe. We agree that this combination would reflect the character of the area and local community connections.” Keynsham will retain its three wards, each represented by two councillors, but the boundaries between Keynsham North and Keynsham South will be shifted to balance out the number of voters in each, making Charlton Road and Sherwood Road the new dividing lines. Keynsham
Town Council ward boundaries will also be affected but the number of councillors will stay the same at 15. The aim of the boundary review is to tackle “electoral inequality” by balancing out the number of voters represented by each councillor, with the average being 2,257 voters per councillor under the proposals. Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the commission, said: “We are publishing proposals for a new pattern of wards across Bath and North East Somerset and we are keen to hear what local people think of the recommendations. “Over the next eleven weeks, we are asking local people to tell us if they agree with the proposals or if not, how they can be improved. “Our review aims to deliver electoral equality for local voters. This means that each councillor represents a similar number of people so that everyone’s vote in

£500,000 junction scheme completed
A half-a-million-pound traffic scheme to improve a busy junction used by many travelling to and from Keynsham has been completed. The congestion-busting project has seen carriageways at the Two Headed Man junction widened to two lanes to tackle queues caused by the previous single-lane design. Bath and North East Somerset Council said around 5,000 vehicles use the light-controlled junction every day. It connects the B3116 Wellsway/Burnett Hill road with the A39. Cllr Tim Warren, leader of B&NES Council, said: “The need to improve traffic on the A39, and at the Two Headed Man junction in particular, has been talked about locally for many years. These improvements form a key part of our wider plan to improve transport and tackle congestion across the B&NES area, and I would like to thank residents for their patience while work was being undertaken.”

Voice backs student Joe on his trek to Everest Base Camp for special cause A former Wellsway student with a passion for photography will have the photo opportunity of a lifetime when he climbs to Everest Base Camp later this year. Joe Hardwick, 19, will spend 10 days trekking to the peak’s South Base Camp in Nepal at 5,364 metres and says he hopes to be able to capture some memorable images along the way. He is undertaking the challenge in September in aid of the Children’s Society and hopes to raise around £3,000 to support the charity’s work. Joe, now a Birmingham University student and a keen photographer in his spare time, undertook work experience with Keynshamvoice while still at school and, to help him on the way to his target, the team has

T
he buzz around Keynsham in recent weeks has been concerns over the rise in reported antisocial behaviour and other related offences. It was publicised quite heavily that concerned residents were going to attend the quarterly Connecting Communities meeting, which was held in The Space in the civic centre above the library. The main focus of the meeting was due to be about next year’s council budget, but with the publicity that had been gained the main focus at the start of the meeting was on local crime. I opened the meeting with my usual report, which compares crime figures from the previous year, looking at trends and the problemsolving measures that we are
putting in place. The policing team fielded questions from the floor but time ran away from us so we stayed to speak individuals about their issues. The feedback from the meeting has been positive and the town council is looking to have a dedicated meeting designed to get more of the public involved with no other agenda. Once I have details of this I will look to publicise them. The upshot has been that due to problem-solving measures that have been put in place we have been able to combat some of the issues. We have put out plain-clothed officers who have identified and detained offenders for various drug offences. We have also identified and dealt with some of our busiest antisocial behaviour offenders, which in turn has had a positive impact on our crime figures. n Our serious crime trend of robberies on the vulnerable is still occurring with another offence
against an elderly female that took place at around 10am on Friday, December 15. This occurred on the footpath between Keynsham’s main Tesco store and Culvers Road. The incident reference number is 5217286083. n I’d like to take the time to thank people who got in contact with us following the publication of CCTV showing two people suspected of a purse theft which occurred in Keynsham High Street. Following this we have made one significant arrest and have been able to identify another suspect who is currently being sought. n Around this time of year we publicise our drink-driving campaign Operation Tonic, which over recent years has evolved. Not only are we looking to identify drink drivers but also drug drivers. The second is, of course, much harder to get an obvious indicator
for, but we have recently received training enabling us to carry out roadside tests on drivers suspected of being under the influence of cannabis and cocaine. The courts have also identified the importance of this with the strong sentencing that they are imposing. I had a court result for an offender this month who was found to have been driving with cocaine in his system and he received a community order made for 12 months, he must carry out unpaid work for 150 hours within the next 12 months, pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £85, pay costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service and was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for four years. For me, this highlights how seriously these offences are now being taken and the need for everyone who takes drugs to know what could happen and how it could affect your life for years. Funds from choir triple bill helps two causes More than 200 people enjoyed a triple bill of choirs at a fundraising winter concert in Keynsham. Mendip Male Voice Choir was joined at St John’s Church by the Silver Ring Choir of Bath and Cantilena Young Singers on December 2 in a show hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Keynsham and Chelwood Bridge. The groups presented a mix of seasonal music, including carols that gave the audience the
chance to join in. The concert raised £1,800, which will be split between Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance and Children’s Hospice South West. A Rotary spokesperson said: “All gave great performances and Cantilena showed that there are some very good up-and-coming singers for the future. We are grateful to all who helped stage this event, including St John’s Parish Office and the Coventry Building Society.”
The highest number of new homes in more than two decades has been built in Bath and North East Somerset this year, the council has revealed. A total of 871 new properties has been built across the district in the 2016/17 financial year – the highest tally since B&NES was created in 1996 and much more than the yearly average of around 450. The majority of this year’s new homes are located on previously developed land (57 per cent), says the council, and 193 of them are affordable homes. Councillor Tim Warren, leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, said one of the council’s top priorities was to deliver more local homes to both buy and rent. He added: “By building more new homes, particularly
on brownfield sites, we can help more local people get onto the housing ladder and own a home of their own, while at the same ensuring we also have the right mix of social and rented accommodation to meet our area’s needs. To support this further, we have also earmarked £3.5 million in the council’s budget to support the delivery of new affordable housing projects throughout the district in the coming years.” Looking ahead, the council estimates nearly 1,000 new affordable are expected to be available by 2020 across 40 sites – affordable homes are currently being built on 12 developments in B&NES. Nursery opens next door to secondary A new pre-school nursery is opening its doors in Keynsham in January in the grounds of Broadlands Academy. Broadlands Bears will cater for up to 30 children aged from 12 months to four years old and will be managed by Charlotte Miller, who has worked in a number of pre-schools, both private and local authority-run, for the past eight years. The nursery is in a selfcontained building to the side of the secondary school and was built following a proposal put together by Broadlands Academy. Charlotte Miller said: “My ambitions are to develop Broadlands Bears with the help of the fantastic team to provide personalised high-quality care and education for children under five.
“I also want to ensure the nursery provides a really positive addition to the local community by developing projects such as community allotments and vocational experiences for young people.” She added: "My passion is working closely with families to build trusting and supportive relationships so I can provide the best care for their children." Early gift starts the festivities for Guides Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were delighted to be invited to Waitrose in Keynsham to collect a cheque from the Waitrose Community Matters scheme. Grant for pre-school Children at a Keynsham nursery are enjoying the great outdoors more thanks to a newly resurfaced play area, above. Staff at 3-2-4 Pre-School have said a big thank you to Tesco Keynsham and its customers after they received a donation of £5,000 towards the project as part of the store’s Bags of Help scheme. A spokesperson said: “We extend our sincere thanks to the public for voting for us in the ‘Blue Coin’ challenge – we are truly grateful, as are the parents and children. This has made a massive difference to the children’s outdoor playtime, with all of the children benefiting from a safer environment to play.”
Congratulations to all who took part in the recent Wansdyke District Cub Archery competition. More than 25 Cubs from all of the Cub packs in the area battled their way to the finals at Keynsham Scout HQ, where Keynsham Packs Chiltern, Cotswold and Quantock were all represented. We’d like to say a huge thank you to the leaders who have become qualified instructors to bring this activity to the young people.

You might say it was the “icing on the cake” as Chiltern Cubs skated and slid their way around on the new Glice rink at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park. A fabulous time was had by all. Over the last 12 months, behind the scenes the management and staff at Avon Valley have been
Cubs and Scouts put their skills into practice to make decorations quietly supporting Scouting in Keynsham, working in partnership with the Scout leader team to bring adventure and activity to our young people. Rafting, kayaking and canoeing are just three examples plus, of course, animal-centred activities. Thank you so much to all at Avon Valley, but especially to Emily for providing the opportunities.

Do you remember the Chernobyl disaster back in April 1986? The population of Belarus can never forget. They will be forever affected by the legacy of the world’s worst nuclear disaster – the radioactive fallout was nearly 400 times greater than the bombs dropped in 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. The World Health Organisation has classified 500,000 of the children in Belarus as being “at risk” or, put another way, only six per cent are considered healthy. The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity was established by Victor Mizzi OBE in 1992. Building on his example, we are
bringing a group of 16 children from the Osipovichi district of Belarus this summer for a month’s respite break. Could you share your home with two 11-year-old children for two weeks from Sunday, July 22, to Sunday, August 5? There is a comprehensive network of support for host families – you would not be on your own. The children will take part in lots of planned activities. These range from sports to the arts, from local visits to coach trips to the sea or countryside. There will be two interpreters with the group and they are on hand around the clock should there be any language difficulties or for general advice and assistance. Junction redesign may prove success In reply to Allen Peters’ letter regarding the Two Headed Man junction, I have lived at Burnett for 50-plus years and have used this junction many times, often sitting there waiting for the lights to change when there has been no traffic going the other way. As he stated, a roundabout would have been better, only giving way to traffic on your right, as at the Globe roundabout. But after saying that, I used the Tollgate junction a few days ago and it is a vast improvement – coming from Corston and turning right waiting for the filter arrow, the Marksbury traffic is able to continue forward using the other lane. Given time I am sure this will prove to be a success, and money well spent, whereas before it was a death trap! As it is, we have a 40mph speed limit on the B3116 but some seem to ignore it and travel at speeds of their choice, with no respect for others using the junction. Mr D Woodham Burnett

Creative year ahead for Bloom The team behind Keynsham in Bloom are brimming with ideas for creative projects that will not only make the town look great but will also provide plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved – and don’t throw away your plastic bottle tops! Chair Denise James explains Wow – what an incredible year it has been for Keynsham in Bloom. A Gold for the fourth consecutive year, and two additional awards for our railway station garden and the Great Floral Bike Trail.
Looking ahead to new projects and ideas, we hope that 2018 will be even better. We are looking to get even more creative, working with budding local artists and asking for everyone to start collecting plastic bottle tops. The idea is that they will be transformed by community and young people’s groups and schools into pieces of artwork that can be put on display for the RHS judges’ visit in July. We saw the wonderful artwork that Portishead in Bloom had created and thought it was a great idea we could recreate here in Keynsham. Our Floral Bike Trail attracted so much community involvement and we are looking to create a scarecrow trail next year and hope that everyone will enjoy taking part in this as much as the bike trail. We recently met with Severnside Community Railway Partnership and they have

Volunteers helped to decorate our tree for the Keynsham Christmas Tree Festival and we were invited to say a few words on the work of Keynsham in Bloom during the Sunday service. It was lovely to see so many groups coming together and decorating their themed trees. Our plea for help in Keynshamvoice in our December
article was successful and we had a number of people contact us to find out about getting involved. Our stall at the Winter Festival also attracted volunteers who would like to join our gardening projects. So, looking at the projects we have planned for next year, I’m sure we will all be very active. I would like to finish by thanking all our Keynsham in Bloom volunteers and everyone, along with our sponsors, who has helped and contributed to our success this year a happy new year. n NEWS by Transition Keynsham Patrick Holden, founder of the Sustainable Food Trust, and Ped Asgarian of the Community Farm spoke to an enthusiastic audience about how we can eat sustainably for our health and the health of the planet on Wednesday, December 6, at The Space, Ped explained how the Community Farm was set up to help people connect with their food and understand where and how it grows, offering volunteer days as well as their popular veg boxes. Patrick’s talk was a passionate argument for a less industrialised kind of farming. He advocates smaller farms, mixing arable and livestock, with crop rotation at their heart. These farms support the local community economically, and use fewer pesticides and fertilisers, which is better for our soils and the wider environment, he argued. Crucially, he explained that although our intensive farming system produces cheaper food, we aren’t paying for the true

at the checkout, but the NHS is paying for it, in treating the huge increase in diet-related diseases like obesity and diabetes, he said. We’re lucky that locally we’ve
a number of great food suppliers, a number of whom were at the talk, offering tasters. We tried foods from G&D Free, Somerset Local Foods Direct, Fresh Range and Temple Street Canteen (using veg from the Community Farm). The local Fairtrade Group kindly supplied the drinks. Our take-away messages from Patrick and Ped’s talks are that we can buy our food locally, eating food that’s grown by people in our community. If we know our food producers we understand what methods have been used to produce our food. We’re also supporting our local economy. Supermarkets provide us with products we need – but we could change the way we shop in them, by purchasing brands that are traceably organic and/ or local.

Challenges to start year on right foot

Two challenges set by the Forever Friends Appeal will be the ideal motivation for anyone who has made getting more active their new year’s resolution. The charity, which raises funds for Bath’s hospitals, is urging people across the area to grab their walking boots in 2018 for two fundraising events. The first is a walking marathon along the Kennet and Avon Canal on Saturday, May 12, which will see walkers waved off on the 26.2-mile route from Bishops Cannings near Devizes by Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis. For those who want a shorter walk, there is also a 10-mile option from Bradford on Avon. Registration is £20 and last year the event raised £130,000 for a range of departments as well as the charity’s major Cancer Care centre and RNHRD and Therapies Centre campaign. The second challenge will take walkers much further afield, trekking the Grand Canyon over eight days and camping out under the stars. Departing on September 8, the trek will explore the Grand Canyon as well as Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon. Anyone who wants to find out more can come along to the Trek Information Evening on Tuesday, January 23, at 6.30pm at the RUH, when there will be a Q&A session with the walk leader and the charity. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Keynsham Abbey
At December’s meeting, society members heard archaeologist Verity Anthony give a detailed description of what is known of the buildings that comprised Keynsham Abbey, a large and impressive complex that dominated the town until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Built around 1167, the abbey’s principal buildings were built to the highest standards. When they were dissolved, some similar buildings in remote locations decayed only gradually but, due to its proximity to Bristol, Keynsham was rapidly stripped of its bells and lead roofing, exposing the structure to the elements. The buildings were sold to Sir Thomas Bridges and passed to his descendants. They used some of the stone to build a mansion on the site and some to rebuild the tower of St John’s, but the rest soon disappeared to be reused around the village and further afield. Paradoxically, the most intricate and beautiful pieces of carved stone were the least valuable, as they could not easily be reused, so when the whole site was finally levelled and cleared in the 1770s quite a number of them remained buried among the rubble and accumulated detritus. When the villas along Abbey Park were built in Victorian times, little attention was paid to the stonework and tiled floors that were disturbed and destroyed, although some pieces found their way into gardens and rockeries. A report was written in 1875 but it was of limited value to later researchers. However, it was in this part of the abbey that one of the most interesting features was sited:

the tomb of Sir Jasper Tudor. Keynsham Abbey was of very high standing and before he died in 1495 Sir Jasper, uncle of Henry VII, specified that he should be buried in the abbey. Jasper Tudor was a key figure in Tudor history, although not well known today – we will write about him in a future issue. It was the construction of the Keynsham bypass in the 1960s that prompted the first extensive archaeological work on the site. Remarkable as it seems today, this was undertaken entirely by amateurs, following the earthmovers to record, measure and salvage what they
could. Some of the finds were of outstanding quality, one of the finest being the ceiling boss showing Samson subduing the lion: this was one of the pieces taken on a tour of museums across the world and was later adopted as the society’s logo. Another was a unique scallop shell badge, painted and pierced so it could be worn on a cord around the neck; this was found with a skeleton and marked the wearer as someone who had been on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. These finds, including a large collection of high-quality medieval tiles, are today mainly in the care of the B&NES Archaeology Service,
with some pieces and specimens of the tiles on display in Keynsham Library. Overall, very little of Keynsham Abbey has survived, but the evening drew attention to the excellent work of the 1960s archaeologists and the importance of conserving the relics that they saved from the bulldozers.

Professor Malpass from UWE has made a study of the slums of Victorian Bristol and the difficulties encountered by housing reformers trying to tackle the problem. The talk will be on Monday, January 15, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome. Museum to reopen doors on factory life An exhibition chronicling the dramatic changes at the former Fry’s factory at Somerdale since chocolate production ended in March 2011 is the latest to feature at Frenchay Village Museum. Somerdale – Then and Now has been put together by a number of ex-Somerdale employees and will run at the museum until just before Easter. Cecil Fry, of the Grove, Frenchay, became chairman of Fry’s in 1924 when his father Roderick retired. Work on moving the Bristol factories to Keynsham had already begun when Cecil took over, and he laid the foundation stone of the office block at Somerdale in 1932. The ceremonial mason’s tools that Cecil used are now housed in Frenchay Village Museum. Following the closure of the Somerdale chocolate factory
Cecil Fry became the chairman of Fry’s in 1924 – the ceremonial tools he used to lay the foundation stone are housed in Frenchay Village Museum in 2011, the three original factory blocks were acquired by St Monica Trust to create retirement living community the Chocolate Quarter. In January 2016 Cecil’s grandson Cosmo Fry used the same ceremonial mason’s tools
to lay the foundation stone of the new St Monica’s facility. Although the exhibition will run for several months, a special event is planned for Sunday, January 28, when there’s a chance to meet some former Fry’s staff who promise to have a
sweet surprise in store for visitors. Frenchay Village Museum re-opens after the winter shutdown on January 6, and is open Saturday and Sunday from 2-5pm and Wednesday from 1-4pm. Entry is free.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction
Bring on the Blacks by Desmond Ward A copy of this book was kindly donated to Keynsham Library by the author himself. Using local knowledge and set against the racial discrimination of the 1960s, the author has written a story set among the bus workers of the Bristol Omnibus Company. It is 1963 and Bristol Omnibus Company is operating a colour bar and refusing to hire any West Indian or Asian drivers or conductors. There is a boycott and many demonstrations and marches in Bristol city centre. We meet Dabber, a young Bristolian conductor, and his girlfriend Melody, who is an activist in her own right; Ratso, a bus driver who has very strong views on the West Indian and Asian drivers and the numerous passengers that fill the buses throughout a busy drive through Bristol. The drivers are short-staffed and are met with antagonism from locals on their routes. As the protest continues, will the bus company ever change its rules? This is a good read about a part of Bristol’s history and very thought provoking, and there are many local references, from streets to pubs. An enjoyable read! The Muse by Jessie Burton From the author of The Miniaturist, Jessie Burton has created another gripping story. Initially set in 1967, we meet Odelle Bastien as she starts her job as a typist in a
London gallery with a very glamorous boss – Marjorie Quick. Marjorie soon unlocks a real future for Odelle. Then one day a mysterious lost masterpiece arrives at the gallery and Marjorie appears to know more about it than she lets on. Ever resourceful, Odelle is determined to find out more. Then the story switches to 1936 where we meet a very artistic family living in rural Spain – enjoying the sun, oranges and a nearby olive grove. The head of the family is a renowned art dealer, Harold Schloss, his wife is Sarah and Olive is their daughter, who in secret is an aspiring artist in her own right. Enter two strangers who overturn the Schlosses’ Mediterranean idyll with explosive results. As you continue with the book, you realise that these two stories are linked and this makes for a very interesting read – a real pageturner.

Flat Belly Diet for Men by Liz Vaccariello Here is a book to help those of us who may have over-indulged over the festive period and feel that the new year is a time to start to think about losing those extra pounds. This book targets that male paunch
with gusto! It begins with the science section and explains which fats are good and which are bad. It then describes a four-day flat abs kickstart menu/shopping list, followed, of course, by an exercise plan, which appears quite straight forward. There is also an excellent recipe section with mouth-watering menu options such as almond, blueberry and brown sugar porridge; grilled chicken and cherry tomato pasta salad or dark chocolate pudding. These will definitely fill you up and boost your energy while trying to lose that weight.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

ransition Keynsham wishes our community a very happy new year. We’re looking forward to what 2018 will bring. We were delighted by the success of the talk we helped put on in December, with Patrick Holden and Ped Asgarian explaining how we can eat sustainably for our health and the health of the planet. We’ll be working together with other local groups to put on more events on sustainability, climate change and the environment. Our Energy Group’s Community Energy Company will be offering shares in a local renewable energy scheme (rooftop solar) in early 2018. We’ll be prioritising local investors, and any profit we make will be ploughed back into energy saving schemes in Keynsham – specifically to alleviate fuel poverty. Our Dig In days at the veg plot in the park will continue. We extend a warm welcome to anyone who’d like to get fresh air and exercise and meet our friendly bunch of gardeners. Just pop along
Jogging and gardening have the benefits of keeping you fit and connecting you with nature on the first Saturday of the month at 10.30am. After all the indulgence of Christmas many people’s thoughts turn to exercise. Gardening’s a great way to do that. But there are other ways of getting fit. Here are a few suggestions, that – unlike the gym – get you out in nature too. Friends of Manor Road Community Woodland have
volunteer days, with all sort of physical tasks from cutting back brambles to repairing dry stone walls. Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham branch offers walks and other outdoor activities as well as its very popular monthly talks. Walkers are Welcome also offer regular walks in the local area. Keynsham is a great place to go running or jogging. There are
running groups (Fry Club Runners and This Mum Runs Keynsham for starters), but you don’t need a group to get going. The NHS’s very popular Couch to 5K podcasts are an amazing way to get you started. Tree festival proves to be a hit once again Hundreds of people once again made their way through the doors of St John’s Church in Keynsham for an early dose of festive spirit. Almost 60 local groups once again put their creative skills to the test to decorate Christmas trees to reflect their activities. From lollipop stick stars and handmade bees to sugarcraft snowflakes, there were plenty of original designs to admire. Visitors were also treated to a range of live entertainment during the festival, from December 8 to 10, including carols from Phoenix Youth Theatre and St John’s Choir, a jazz band, organ and piano recitals and recorder players from local primary schools. All money raised over the weekend will go to church funds and organisers also thanked St Monica Trust, Broadleaze Nursery, B&Q, Tesco, Waitrose and Greggs for their support.

s we get older, we often complain that we can no longer do the things we could “when we were young”, but most people want to enjoy an active lifestyle well into old age. In fact, it is important to maintain activity as this not only keeps our joints healthy and in good working order, but it also keeps other parts of our bodies healthy too. Mr Evert Smith, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital, finds that many of us believe that you have to be “of a certain age” to contemplate having a joint replacement. However, if a joint such as a hip or knee is no longer working properly, a joint replacement is sometimes the best option and putting off replacement surgery can often cause more problems. Mr Smith answers some frequently asked questions about joint health and joint replacement surgery: When seeking a specialist opinion, what do patients typically complain of and what can be done? Joint pain is increasingly common as we age. It is important that patients do not to ignore joint pain that is worsened by walking. Pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. However, many people ignore the warning signs and battle through the pain with the help of analgesics, or through sheer grit. Joint pain can be managed in many ways, and does not necessarily mean you will need a joint replacement operation. A course of physiotherapy may be all that is needed to get you back on track. The important thing is to get it checked out, first by your GP and then with a scan or x-ray investigation. Putting up with the pain is not a sensible option. Persistent or increasing pain is a warning sign and it should be investigated. What might happen if joint pain is ignored and can it worsen over time such that surgery becomes a necessity? It is a fact of life that as we get older our joints are likely to become stiffer and can cause pain. However, putting off treatment will only worsen the situation and may have a detrimental effect on other joints, as they try to take the strain of

the malfunctioning or painful joint. For example, if you limp due to a painful knee, you are likely to alter the way you walk, and this in turn will put a strain on other joints such as your hips, your other knee or your back as these joints try to accommodate an altered posture or style of walking. This may be acceptable in the case of a short-term injury, but when this occurs over a prolonged period, it will affect other parts of your body. Do people stop undertaking physical activity to avoid the pain of damaged joints, and can this affect general health? If carrying out your normal everyday functions, such
as walking, exercising or performing ordinary tasks becomes too painful such that you avoid or stop doing things, it is important to get treatment because reducing activity can affect one’s health. For example, your heart and lungs can be adversely affected if you do not take regular exercise and you may also gain weight.

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome
W
ell over 20 festive revellers gathered at the Memorial Park cafe on Saturday, December 9, for the annual Christmas wreath-making walk. Armed with secateurs, and bags, we set off on what was a cold but walk-friendly day. Because we had decorated a tree in the St John's Church Christmas Tree Festival, our first stop was to view all the exhibits, in what is an enjoyable spectacle. After a brief stop we got down to the hard work of collecting greenery to make our wreaths. We then headed back to the Scout Hall for a demonstration on wreath-making by Ruth Hutchings, who we thank for giving up her Saturday morning to join in the fun. Mulled wine and mince pies were laid on to help with the festivities. We all had great fun comparing our attempts, which everyone took home at the end of the event. BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group
Smiles all round after ‘cracking’ set of talks! December saw members of Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group treated to a rich and varied evening’s entertainment – a real “Christmas cracker” – thanks to contributions from two committee members and one of our up-and-coming young local naturalists, writes chairman Dave Sage. The first talk, by local visits organiser Liz Wintle, took us to the Azores and Madeira, volcanic islands off the Atlantic west coast of North Africa, which she visited last April. Sharing with us the unusual and sometimes endangered exotic plants to be found in various botanical gardens, Liz was meticulous in her research and comparisons with species found in Bristol Botanical Gardens, where she works. Rueing the fact that her cruise was during the rainy season, she nevertheless produced some good photos. Notable plants were Strelitzia nicolae, the giant white bird of paradise plant, with huge banana-like leaves; Laurus azorica (the Macaronesian laurel) found above 500 metres in the cloud forest; Ficus macrophylla, a type of fig, with amazing buttress-like roots; and Echium candicans, the “Pride of Madeira”. After a break for a drink and mince pies, a quiz on the year’s walks and talks, and the chance to buy seasonal goodies, the second talk was by Jamie Kingscott, a former Wellsway school student and Green Team member, now an environmental science graduate of Cardiff University. Farrell, vice-chairman and treasurer, and it took us to some breathtaking parts of South Africa, on a splendid photographic safari completed by Kathy and husband Martin over the last few years. The first stop was along the “Garden Route” of the Western Cape, to Bontebok Park, named after the magnificent antelope that are found there, along with steenbok and grey rhesbok. This area is home to a huge variety of wildlife. We were soon whisked to the Cape coast, to witness some hair-raising footage of cage diving with great white sharks! From there, north and east to the Kruger national park, now so famous that, in Kathy’s words, some visits to see the big game were more like “bun fights”! The highlight of the trip and climax of the talk was the visit to Zimanga game reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, with a collection of unique observation hides designed by previous Wildlife Photographer of the Year Bence Maté, including the overnight hide, complete with bedroom and bathroom! Enthusiastic and highly talented photographers and film-makers, Kathy and Martin acquired some of their best shots and footage on this reserve, with lions, cheetahs, warthogs, wild dogs, porcupine and even aardvarks just a small selection of their total. ‘Angels’ drop in with surprise donation An early Christmas gift of £2,000 is music to the ears of a charity hoping to set up a music tuition project for people with learning disabilities. Keynsham and District Mencap Society was presented with a cheque to go towards the charity’s Music Man project by members of a now-defunct fundraising group called Fry’s Little Angels. Former “Angels” Pete Wilkins, Debbie Dyer and Sally Cox joined Mencap members at the Fear Hall for a tea party to hand over the funds – and tell the story of how 15 years after the fundraising group closed they were making a donation today. The group was set up by community-minded employees at the Fry’s factory in 1995 and ran until 2002, during which time they organised auctions, raffles, sports events, discos and more to help those in need, including buying a specially adapted wheelchair and funding home alterations for someone with cerebral palsy. Recently, Mr Wilkins came across the group’s old paying-in book and, determined to ensure any money still in the account went to a good cause, set about reclaiming access to the cash. After several months, his efforts paid off and he was delighted to discover the amount left over. He said: “We are delighted the money has gone to Keynsham Mencap. The Fry Club has had a long association supporting

Play tells true tale from occupied Holland The story of a family who helped Jewish people escape the clutches of the Nazis in occupied Holland will be told in a performance coming to Keynsham this month. Oddments Theatre Company is presenting The Hiding Place on Tuesday, January 23, at Victoria Methodist Church. It tells the true story of the Ten Boom family, who offered a safe haven to Jews and members of the Dutch Resistance in a secret room built behind a false wall in daughter Corrie’s bedroom. The book Corrie subsequently
wrote, the inspiration for the play, reveals how they were betrayed by an informer, arrested and then Corrie and her sister Betsie were taken to Ravensbruck concentration camp. Betsie was to die there but Corrie was released in 1944 as the result of a clerical error – just a week before all the women of her age imprisoned in the camp were killed. The show begins at 7pm and tickets are £8.50 and can be purchased from the Parish Office at St John’s Church or the Methodist Office at Victoria – mornings only.

Gym owner makes a special delivery As a personal trainer, Teresa Lovell is used to helping people reach their goals – but this year her clients have helped her beat her own target. Working together, members of Keynsham’s Love Fitness Studio helped Teresa raise £580 – enough money to buy 137 Christmas presents, which have been delivered to Keynsham Children’s Centre and will go to the children of local families in need. The total is almost three times the amount of presents the group was able to provide last year, when they donated 52 gifts – and Teresa said she will aim to beat the total every year. The group’s fundraising activities included cake and bread sales and raffles, selling fresh eggs, a collection at their Christmas party and Halloween-
themed exercise sessions and they also donated any unused toys from their own families. Teresa said the arrival of her daughter Betsy Alice, with partner Hayley, two years ago was what inspired her to support other families at Christmas. She said: “Betsy Alice changed my life and made me realise that Christmas is about children. As I talked to her about Christmas and Santa and presents, I realised that some children will wake up to nothing on Christmas morning. “It’s a very expensive time of year and some families don’t have enough money to buy presents so as a local business we wanted to help local people. “I don’t have enough money to buy every child in need a present but I realised I could use my contacts to help. People

Deep, funny reinvention of ageing film franchise Star Wars: The Last Jedi (12A) ever before have I left a screening of a movie needing a physical recovery from the emotional impact of the previous two hours. We’re now at the eighth (technically, ninth) instalment of the Star Wars franchise and writerdirector Rian Johnson has managed to craft a film that grabs you by the throat and does not let go, showing sides of characters that have never been seen, visuals that only a master of the craft could create and performances that have a chance of being recognised at next year’s Academy Awards. The film starts off minutes after the conclusion of The Force Awakens and we see Rey (Daisy Ridley) begin her Jedi training with legendary master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Meanwhile, the remaining members of the Resistance – Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) – attempt to fight off the First Order. Mark Hamill deserves an endless amount of praise for the reprisal

of his career-defining role as Luke. He expertly conveys the loss and hopelessness that Luke feels as well as keeping what made the character memorable in the first place mixed in. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are both excellent in their roles as Kylo Ren and Rey, both of them doing spectacular jobs at presenting the incredible amount of inner conflict in their characters, Driver particularly giving a suitably nuanced performance with bursts of pure rage and emotion. Probably the best part of this film is the risky and unexpected story and character movement delivered by Rian Johnson, who takes the franchise in such a direction that I’m sure it will become the defining trait of this modern trilogy. In conclusion, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a terrific film filled with twists and turns that will throw even the most die-hard of fans off guard, all elevated by a career-best performance by Mark Hamill and bold direction by Rian Johnson. 4.5/5

Snow White and pals back waste campaign The stars of the Theatre Royal’s pantomime have given their backing to a campaign to encourage residents to recycle as much as they can over Christmas and new year. Snow White and her “Magnificent Seven” – otherwise known as Devon Elise-Johnson, Jamie Legg, Simeon Dyer, Glynn Jones, Sarah Knowles, Mark Sealey, Steve Cox and Chris Chapman – have teamed up with Bath and North East Somerset Council to remind everyone of the top seven items that can be recycled over the festive period.

Acclaimed play puts dementia in spotlight A nationally acclaimed play that explores the impact of dementia on family life is coming to Keynsham. Brian Daniels’ Don’t Leave Me Now is inspired by two real-life stories and is endorsed by major charities including Dementia UK, the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Pathfinders and Cruse Bereavement Care and Hospice UK. It is being brought to Keynsham Baptist Church on January 10 by Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance, with the aim of helping the community to develop a better understanding of the condition. Chairman of the DAA Alan Hale said: “I saw this play performed at a dementia event at Dorothy House and found it to be very powerful and educational as well as entertaining. “We just had to bring it to Keynsham and I am thankful to our sponsors Barchester Healthcare and B&NES Ward
Councillors’ Initiative Fund in enabling us to put it on.” A cast of six professionals will perform the play, which has been described as “subtly powerful, sympathetic and sharp, sad and funny” by Booker Prize-winning author Howard Jacobson. There will be two performances of Don’t Leave Me Now, at 2pm and 7pm, admission is free and tea, coffee and biscuits will be available. Kathryn Smith from FDC Law will also be on hand to talk about power of attorney. Ex-City star drops in at fitness club Members of a Keynsham fitness club had a surprise preChristmas visit from someone who knows a thing or two about sport – former Bristol City player Scott Murray. The club favourite dropped in at Keynsham Mencap’s regular Monday night meeting to give four volunteers a very special surprise – tickets to City’s soldout Carabao Cup game against football giants Manchester United. In the run-up to the match, due to be played on December 20, City have been rewarding local people who give up their time to help others with free tickets. Keynsham Mencap’s nominees were: volunteer Phil, who trains the Keynsham Mencap football club; Georgia, who has volunteered at one of

Keynsham Rugby battling it out in seventh as season reaches half-time The Tribute South West 1 League has developed a pattern in the last few weeks of recording close-fought encounters across the board in all matches and this trend continued when Drybrook RFC visited the Crown Field, writes our correspondent. It was nip and tuck for the first 25 minutes then the visitors got a foothold in the Keynsham 22 and after exerting some pressure were rewarded with the first points of the game from a penalty. Keynsham attacked straight away and, following a speculative kick and chase by winged Gaz Bradnock, it was their turn to squeeze the visitors’ defence. A yellow card for their wing forward gave Keynsham the edge they needed and from a catch and drive hooker Tom Lewis burrowed over the line; Sam Challenger slotted the conversion for a 7-3 lead and there it remained until half-time. The second half started as the first with the visitors in control for a long period until a breakaway saw Kit Timmins make a 70-metre dash. This eventually led to a penalty, slotted by Sam Challenger to make it 10-3. Keynsham then defended desperately but conceded another penalty for the visitors to close the gap at 10-6. With barely five minutes to go Keynsham’s defence was breached for the first time by a well worked move, aided by a rare missed tackle, leading to Drybrook taking the spoils with a final score of 10-13. The next game, away at Exeter University, saw the local side out-classed for the only time this season. But they did match the students in two important facets; the effort and determination shown throughout the side was truly commendable. At no stage did heads drop and the desire to play good rugby was there for all to see. A bonus point try and a 26 point to nil scoreline was the reward for the students in just 15 minutes as they left the blocks like rockets. A further seven points were added before, on the stroke of half-time, prop Ben Angell squeezed over for Keynsham’s only first-half points.

Action from Exeter University vs Keynsham The second half was a much closer contest but the home side stretched to a 50-5 lead before Jack Weston crossed for a late try, converted by Sam Challenger to bring it to 50-12. Humour was not absent as skipper Weston was heard to ask the referee: “Does last try win the game, sir?” A home match followed,
which brought to an end the first cycle of games. Thornbury RFC were the visitors and yet another nail-biter was played out. The first five minutes showed the crowd that both sides were determined to play expansive, attractive rugby and the early exchanges were very even. After 15 minutes, following 8/10
phases moving left and right across the field Keynsham went ahead through a well-taken try by scrum-half John Pearce. The conversion by Sam Challenger made it 7-nil. Thornbury replied almost at once to tie the scores then Keynsham re-took the lead 14-7 through a try by Ben Angell from a smart pass thrown by Joe Davis and a Challenger conversion. An immediate response saw the scores again levelled, this time at 14-14. Kris Borthwick, Kit Timmins and Jack Weston all went close to scoring, but the pressure told and from a five-metre scrum, John Pearce fed Timmins who threw himself over the line. The conversion was missed and at half-time Keynsham had a narrow three-point lead. As good as the first half was, the second half failed to come close, the game reflecting the gloomy conditions. Whether the players had the same difficulties as the spectators in telling the sides apart, this 40 minutes was riddled with mistakes from both teams, and frustrations were apparent. Thornbury equalised yet again with a catch and drive penalty and it remained 19-19. Twenty-six minutes in and Keynsham scored their fourth, and bonus point, try by Jack Evans; this coming from a succession of drives following a line-out 15 metres from the line. There was a lot of grunt from both sides thereafter but nothing of note and we were all glad to hear the final whistle. The last match of this review was on December 16 when Matson RFC visited the Crown Field. A very poor game saw Keynsham win 16-7. Tries for Jack Weston and Jack Evans, playing as wing-forward/hooker, and two penalties from Sam Challenger did enough to gain four league points and deny the visitors what would have been a deserved losing bonus. So, after 14 games Keynsham have 34 league points and are in seventh position, four points behind Cullompton and level with Thornbury. Time for Christmas and a regroup.

Keynsham Town extend unbeaten run KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Fields Keynsham Town FC’s First Team continued their excellent form into December, recording three wins out of three and stretching their unbeaten record to 11 games in the Toolstation Western League Division One. They now sit proudly at the top of the table, with a four-point cushion to second place.
The month began with the Ks notching seven goals in a game for the second Saturday running, as they put Bishops Lydeard to the sword at Crown Fields. Midfielder Adey Harvey scored after only three minutes, before leading scorer Matt Brown then wowed the home fans with a spectacular bicycle kick into the top corner from 20 yards. Despite the visitors notching a consolation goal, Brown scored his second on 87 minutes before
young James Ollis came on for his Keynsham Town debut at the tender age of 17 and rounded off a 7-1 victory with a well-taken injury time goal. Next up was a visit to Calne Town on a bitterly cold afternoon. Ks manager John Allen had to make several changes, but the visitors still dominated the opening exchanges, although they failed to take any chances in a goalless first half. The second half followed a similar pattern until James Ollis finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute with a calm finish from 12 yards. That deflated the home side, and a Jordan Anstey header followed by a fine solo goal by Matt Curnock rounded off a convincing 3-0 victory. Portishead Town were the Ks’ next opponents at Crown Fields, and the hosts ground out a hard-earned 1-0 victory. The visitors belied their foot-of-thetable position and with both goalkeepers in supreme form, it took a Matt Curnock goal on 35 minutes to separate the sides and keep Keynsham top of the pile. Off the pitch, Craig Wilson won the club’s November Player of the Month Award. The management team said: “Craig’s impressive performances during this period just gave him the edge and we feel he has found consistency to his game. A centre forward by trade, we have used Craig in a wider role in certain games, knowing that his appreciation of the
defensive side of the game and his selflessness to help his full back are impressive. He was outstanding against Bath City at both ends of the pitch and hit double figures for the season with two well-taken goals at Malmesbury Victoria. We are now seeing the best of Craig and I know his teammates appreciate his hold-up play, which gives us a platform to mount attacks. Special mention should also go to Nathan Curnock, who has also been very consistent both in defence and in attack, with his deep runs being a constant threat to the opposition.” Club Secretary Julian French said: “The committee are so pleased that we have continued to make progress this season, with John, Russ and Mark building on the foundations left by Chris King and Sean Day. Bowling club enjoys night of nostalgia During the closed season members of Keynsham Bowling Club meet every month for a coffee morning, writes our correspondent. December was no exception and the clubhouse was packed for Christmas fare plus the annual draw, with a selection of prizes on offer. During the morning the ladies’ and gents’ captains for the coming season, Ann Newbery and Beresford Parker, announced their charity for 2018 – the Jessie May Trust. One of the social members, Jenny Barrow, who worked for the trust for a number of years, gave a brief talk on its work among families who have a terminally ill child. The last social event before the end of the year was the much anticipated Christmas party. Numbers, due to space, were restricted to 60 and when the list appeared for members to add their names it was full within 24 hours – there were
many disappointed people. As members arrived they were greeted by Father Christmas, and the Social Committee provided the usual Christmas food of turkey and all its trimmings followed by profiteroles and mince pies. All of this swilled
down by a generous glass of mulled wine! The entertainment was a Cliff and the Shadows tribute show, with two brilliant vocalists/ guitarists led by Justin Jay, an ex-Radio One DJ and Radio Bristol presenter. As they played,
between them was positioned a screen showing shots not only of Cliff and the Shadows, but of many of the other pop stars of the Fifties and Sixties including, of course, the mighty Beatles. Much of the footage was in black and white. For those who liked to recall other events of the era, there were shots of the Queen’s Coronation, the first State Opening of Parliament to be screened in colour and other momentous events of that time. The show concluded with something that I guess most of us had forgotten – the BBC test card in black and white shown on the screen, as the only television channel that we had at the time closed down for the night at 10pm. An evening of good food, great entertainment and some super nostalgia for those of us who were lucky to be there. Just another feather in the cap for Keynsham Bowling Club.
Give baseball a try at club’s intro sessions Keynsham-based Bristol Baseball Club is holding two introductory sessions in the new year to give people a chance to try the sport. People of any level of experience are welcome to join the sessions, led by the club’s coaches, at Merchants Sports Academy in south Bristol on January 14 or at Kingswood School, Lansdown Road in Bath, on January 21. Both sessions run from 9.30am to noon and cost £5. Richard Evans, chairman of the club, which plays at
Somerdale Pavilion, said: “Anyone wanting to try their hand at this fantastic game, no matter their experience, is welcome. Our coaches will take everyone through the basics of the game and we provide all the equipment.” The club is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018 and the reigning South West Baseball League champions, the Bristol Badgers, will be playing on the national stage. Ladies’ FA Cup hopes are put to the test November and December were a time of mixed fortunes for Keynsham Town Ladies, in contrast to their successes of the previous two months, writes our correspondent. October finished with a 10-0 away win at Basingstoke Town, their second double-figures result of the season. Top scorer Kerry Bartlett added a further six to her tally to date. However, on the following Sunday they faced their first real test of the season, away to Plymouth Argyle, one of two other sides enjoying a 100 per cent success rate. The long trip proved to be fruitless, for although the scores were level at 2-2 after Keynsham equalised on 63 minutes, they went on to concede a further three goals, a situation not helped by a goalkeeper struggling with injury. The Ladies were on their travels again for the next fixture when they met Southampton Saints in the Women’s FA Cup First Round Proper. They fell behind to a 23rd-minute goal, but in an excellent performance for the remainder of the match, recovered to win 3-1 with goals coming from Katie Cook, Kerry Bartlett and Justine Lorton. The draw for the Second
Round on Sunday, December 3, coincidentally gave Keynsham a home draw with the other Southampton side, Southampton Women. They were outplayed early on and had their keeper to thank for two fine saves from one-on-one situations. Top scorer Kerry Bartlett gave Town the lead just after half time, latching onto a through ball from Rachel Cullen. However Southampton replied on 63 minutes, easily outpacing Nadine Grogan to slot the ball home.
With the prospect of extra time looming, Keynsham grabbed a second on 82 minutes, Justine Lorton shooting into an empty net from a Kerry Bartlett centre. Moments later there was relief when Southampton failed to score from a straightforward chance. The result was revenge for a league defeat the previous weekend away to the same opposition when they lost 1-0 to a 75th-minute goal. Their FA Women’s Premier League game away to Swindon Town was
postponed on December 10 and again the next Sunday due to the state of the pitch. Meanwhile the Keynsham Ladies Development side have struggled of late, losing four times out five in November and December. The team is mostly made up of 16 and 17-year-olds, and frequently face opposition who are rather more experienced. They gained an excellent victory on December 10, however, against Yeovil Town Intermediate with goals coming from Megan Wiltshire and star player Rhianna Ben-Carew. Megan stole in ahead of the Yeovil defence to meet a Rhianna cross on 75 minutes for 1-0, and Rhianna herself clinched it on 82 minutes, by lobbing the keeper. They met Buckland Athletic the next Sunday and were unlucky to lose 5-4 after leading 4-3 with three minutes remaining. The home goals came from Yasmin Pratt (2), Keka Vega and Libby Sims. Next up for the first team – after a Christmas/new year break – will be an exciting FA Cup Third Round fixture at home to local rivals Brislington on January 7 at 1pm.
