Iain has friends in high places, it seems! He may have swapped Hanham for Hollywood, but comedian Stephen Merchant showed he’s still got his ear to the ground when it comes to the best spots to shop when he’s back home. Music fan Stephen dropped in at Iain Aitchison’s record shop, Longwell Records in Temple Street, to browse the vinyl, picking up a rather nice first pressing by The Kinks among other purchases. It may not be the last time the 6ft 7in star is spotted in these parts as Iain is a friend of his and Stephen wanted to show his support for his pal’s new venture.

£7m leisure plan The outcry at the prospect of losing valued facilities at Keynsham Leisure Centre appears to have been heeded with the unveiling of a £7 million redevelopment scheme for the site. Leisure centre users were dismayed when initial plans revealed last year didn’t include a sports hall or poolside spectator seating. Both of these facilities, however, are included in new proposals drawn up to transform the Riverside premises and shown to residents at a series of public feedback sessions over the last few weeks. Taking into account comments made during last year’s consultation, Bath and North East Somerset Council has produced two options for the site, both of which feature an improved sports hall, refurbished main pool which retains the viewing gallery, improved fitness suite, new soft play, teaching pool, studio spaces, changing spaces and the retention of the existing squash courts. The main difference between the two is an extension that would provide a learner pool in Option 1 or a double-height learner pool with fitness suite above in option 2. The council is aiming to submit a planning application next month and to begin work next spring in phases, to allow existing facilities to remain open, completing construction in 2018. The leisure centre is operated by charitable social enterprise GLL under the brand Better. Leader of the council Councillor Tim Warren, who pledged last year to retain the sports hall, said: “I’m

very pleased to honour our commitment to deliver an improved sports hall with badminton courts as part of our plans for the new leisure centre – something which the Keynsham community has told us they want to see in their new leisure centre. “While some other councils are having to close their leisure centres, our plans will provide Keynsham Leisure Centre with a sustainable future to ensure that residents can continue to benefit from public leisure services for years to come. “As well as greatly improving the look and feel of the inside of the leisure centre, the planned improvements are also a great opportunity to revitalise the Riverside and Temple Street area of Keynsham.” One frequent user of the pool, Andrew Workman, said he was delighted at the refurbishment plans – but that he and other regular visitors were concerned that existing showering facilities could be replaced with poolside showers. Many people relied on being able to shower properly before heading straight off to work or elsewhere from the leisure centre, he said. “The plans for the new leisure centre are fabulous, but a number of regular users are concerned about changes to

is just start for Riverside the changing facilities. Poolside showers don’t afford the privacy that many people would like and the existing changing rooms also allow people to chat, which wouldn’t happen on the poolside. “I don’t want to be militant about it and we are thrilled at the plans but I have written to councillors to suggest that this facility shouldn’t be changed if it doesn’t need to be.”

Riverside and Temple Street Residents were also asked for their views on the future of the Riverside building, formerly home to B&NES Council offices. In one option under consideration, the upper floors above the shops on Temple Street could be turned into student accommodation, while another proposes flats, both raising the level of parts of the building by one or two floors and cladding the outside in new materials. A covered market hall on the site of Keynsham’s former fire station was also put to residents who attended the feedback events.

Feedback helping to form vision for town People who attended the launch of the Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan in April provided a range of interesting, informative and helpful comments, says the scoping group leading the initiative. The group has brought together all of the data and is now analysing it to create a vision for the town and to set up the various topic areas that will produce policies for the plan. A spokesperson said: “In due course, an invitation to attend future working party sessions will be sent to those members of the community, business owners and employees of companies in Keynsham that have expressed an interest in working on the production of this community plan. “For members of the community that were unable attend the launch event you may still register an interest. “For further information email ndp@keynsham-tc.gov.uk or phone 0117 986 8683.”

Second order to halt work near proposed marina A second temporary stop notice has been served to halt work on land off Stidham Lane in Keynsham, near the site of a proposed 326-berth marina that was refused in January. Bath and North East Somerset Council stepped in to stop work on an unauthorised road in April. The notice expired on May 6 and council officers who visited the site at the start of June found an area of hardstanding under construction next to the riverbank. The second notice, served to Michael, Suzanne and Simon Bendall and Next Phase Developments – the agent working on the marina bid, ordered all work to stop until July 6. The landowner has applied for retrospective planning permission for an access track and bridge at the site, which has

attracted a number of objections, including from the Environment Agency over lack of flood risk and protected species assessments and from Keynsham Town Council over highways safety and flood risk concerns. Natural England has commented that the site, which is in the green belt, is “ecologically very sensitive” and is home to horseshoe bats and breeding otters. In their response to the council, one couple said: “We object because Stidham Lane is just a country lane and is not built for the increase of traffic that would be inevitable should the road be given permission. It is hard enough as it is for pedestrians to walk along this road.” The marina proposal is set to go before a planning inspector after the council’s decision to reject the scheme was appealed by the landowner in May.

A device that could save a life in a medical emergency has been installed in a Keynsham shopping area. A new defibrillator, which can be used by members of the public if someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, has been fitted to the wall next to the Community@67 community centre in the rank of shops at Queens Road. The funding has come from Keynsham South ward councillor Alan Hale’s discretionary

councillors’ community budget. Mr Hale said: “I am pleased to be able to provide this potentially life-saving facility for the community I represent, though it is a facility that I hope and pray no one will have a need to access. I am grateful to @67 for their help and support in positioning this defibrillator on their premises. “We are also now seeking a location on the Federated estate for a second defibrillator in the area.”

EU vote: Remain supporters stage rally and MP’s choice for new PM As thousands of people joined a Brexit protest in London on July 2, around 100 Bath and North East Somerset residents staged their own march following the EU referendum. Bath’s “Remain Rally” was organised by Jay Risbridger, from the South West Remain campaign, who was a member of the panel at Keynsham’s European Question Time event in May. It followed the June 23 referendum in which 57.9 per cent of Bath and North East Somerset residents voted to stay in the European Union, with 60,878 residents voting to remain and 44,352 residents to leave. The rally coincided with similar events in other parts of the country where the regional outcome was also at odds with the national result, which saw a 52 per cent majority vote for Brexit. Meanwhile, North East

Campaigners at a ‘Remain Rally’ in Bath, left; MP Jacob ReesMogg, above, is backing Michael Gove for next PM Somerset MP Jacob ReesMogg, who backed the Leave campaign and was also a panellist at Keynsham’s EU debate, has thrown his weight behind Michael Gove in his bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister. Mr Rees-Mogg said he would have continued to support

Boris Johnson had he remained in the race, but he had long wanted Mr Gove to become the next party leader. He said: “I think it is essential to have someone who believes we should leave the European Union at the UK’s helm and as one of the key figures of the Leave campaign I am confident

that Michael will ensure that the necessary negotiations and changes are properly carried out and put into effect. He has the vim and vigour to be a great Prime Minister and to take the country forward in this time of historic change.” l See Jacob Rees-Mogg’s column on Page 18

Aspiring entrepreneurs in Keynsham can get expert business advice on launching their own ventures at a free workshop next month. Business growth consultancy Cool Ventures is hosting another Starting in Business workshop in the town on Thursday, August 11, following a successful event

keynshamvoice

last year, which was fully booked. Offered in partnership with Bath and North East Somerset Council, the interactive evening session – which is being held at Keynsham Civic Centre between 6pm and 9pm – will explain the basics of running a business and what it means to work for yourself. The workshop will be run by an experienced business adviser

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

from Cool Ventures, which advises start-ups and more established businesses looking to grow and secure funding. Roger Wilkins, a director of Cool Ventures, said: “If you have ever dreamed of running your own business, then this workshop will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to help make it a success. “Our Starting in Business workshops are run at venues

across Bath and North East Somerset but this is only the third one we have held in Keynsham. “We expect demand for places will be high and would advise people to book a place as soon as possible.” Spaces are limited. What do you think of a West mayor?

Residents across Bath and North East Somerset are being asked for their views on the creation of a mayor for the West of England. The public consultation has been launched following the council’s decision to move forward with a £1 billion devolution deal for the region – also agreed by the local authorities in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. As part of the deal, a new West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) would be set up to manage the new powers, funding and

responsibilities handed over by central government. The results of the consultation, which will run until August 15 in all three council areas, will be taken into account by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government when deciding whether the deal should go ahead. If it did, elections for a West of England mayor would be held in May 2017. Council leader Tim Warren said: “This deal – worth more than £1,000 per head of population – far outweighs

any other devolution deal done elsewhere in the country. This represents the best possible deal both in terms of the funding secured and safeguards in place to protect the absolute autonomy of Bath & North East Somerset Council. “By unlocking £1 billion of additional funding over the next 30 years, this deal will give us greater freedom to plan for the future, invest in much-needed new infrastructure, and deliver the new homes and jobs our area will need in the years ahead.” Residents are being asked

for feedback on four key areas: decision making, place (transport and housing), people (adult education and skills) and business. People can have their say online at www.westof englanddevolution.co.uk or can obtain a paper consultation form at local libraries and one-stop shops or on 0117 922 2848. A number of roadshows will also be held to give residents the chance to find out more and share their views, including at The Space in Keynsham on Monday, July 25, from 7-9pm.

Space hosts ‘green carpet’ event as nature film gets its premiere Keynsham will be the venue for the English premiere of an award-winning documentary film that focuses on the human connection with the natural world. Love Thy Nature will be shown at a “green carpet” event at The Space, in Market Walk, on August 6, when director Sylvie Rokab will make her first visit to England from her home in LA to join the screening. Narrated by Hollywood star Liam Neeson, the film explores humans’ relationship with the natural world and considers the ways we make use of nature in science, technology, medicine, sustainability and spirituality – acknowledging we are part of nature, not its master. Sylvie, who also wrote and produced the film, was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, developing a passion for photography and cinematography which led her to spend much of her adult

Love Thy Nature director Sylvie Rokab, below, and a still from the film life in Miami working as a cinematographer and director on several projects for television such as the Discovery Networks and The Travel Channel. Explaining why she made Love Thy Nature, Sylvie said: “There was this big hole that needed to be filled between gorgeous movies that were only about wildlife and nature and

9

the hardcore environmental films that didn’t explore the beauty of our connection with nature. “I feel that making this film enriched my spirit, especially when I hear viewers say they leave the theatre inspired to connect with others and the world around them. “It’s about making people realise their need for nature and awaken them to the realisation by needing nature, by loving nature, by connecting with nature, they have a personal benefit from it and absolutely they would be inclined to want to protect it.” The “green carpet” premiere, from 6.30-9.30pm, will include a wine and canapes reception, the screening of the film followed by a Q&A session with Sylvie. Tickets cost £10/£8 from https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/lovethynature, where there are also more details about the film.

Winners receive their prizes at Broadlands Academy’s STEM celebration; some of the entries, right

Sky’s the limit for pupils in space-themed contest Inspired by British astronaut Major Tim Peake, Broadlands Academy students launched their own mission to win in a space-themed, creative competition. Challenged by science teacher and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) co-ordinator Ms Fiander, pupils from Years 7 to 10 came up with a wide range of ideas, from clothing, cakes, games and Lego models to poems, stories, paintings and photos. All of the entries were put on display at a celebration event on June 28, when STEM ambassadors from SCIYS, BMT, GE Oil and Gas and Atkins Engineering visited the school

to decide the winners, based on their creativity and passion for the subject. Families and staff were all invited to the event, where they had the chance to look at the entries, talk to students and enjoy food from an indoor barbecue before the prize-giving ceremony took place. Top prizes were donated by Tesco Keynsham, Bristol Zoo, Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm and Mendip Outdoor Pursuits. During Major Peake’s Principia mission, where he spent six months on the International Space Station carrying out a range of experiments, Broadlands pupils were given the chance to analyse

seeds that had been grown in space. Broadlands Academy has taken up many opportunities in the STEM fields and was shortlisted for the TES Science, Technology and Engineering Teacher or Team of the Year last year and previously won an award for STEM Activities Week of the Year.

The skills developed through the study of Mathematics are in high demand from both universities and employers. Studying Mathematics provides opportunities to develop resilience, effective communication of complex ideas and the ability to use your own initiative, as well as developing the ability to think logically and solve problems. Furthermore, “Maths is the only A level proven to increase earnings in later life - by an average of 10%.” (Source: www.gov.uk/government/speeches/elizabethtruss-on-support-for-maths-and-science-teaching) Continuing to study Mathematics is a fantastic choice because of the wide range of applications of the subject. Maths supports many other subject areas and if your child gains a good pass in GCSE Mathematics, they should consider taking mathematics further. Post-16 options are: • AS or A level Mathematics; • A level Mathematics with AS or A level Further Mathematics; • Core Maths.

Activities keep the ball rolling for 1st Keynsham Scouts are an impressive £4,500 closer to raising enough funds for a new floor at their HQ – and that’s alongside rolling up their sleeves to help the community, too. The group reports on a busy month for the young ‘Giants’ We are sure that everybody knows that Giants live at the top of beanstalks, just ask Jack! It doesn’t appear to be beanstalks that have been planted in the raised flowerbeds in the car park opposite the Scout

HQ, however. Last month saw more than 30 Cubs and Scouts get their hands dirty pulling out old plants, adding new soil, planting new summer bedding, then watering and dead-heading. Suddenly the car park is a mass of colour as the Scouts look to get ready for the Keynsham in Bloom judging in July. A spokesperson for KIB said: “What a joy it has been to see these young people really throwing themselves into the fun of gardening, they really were little Giants.” The Scout group is looking for adults to help the young people tend the beds over the summer weeks. If you fancy it then email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk – I wonder if they did plant any beans! Golf Day success With grateful thanks to Saltford

Golf Club for allowing the Scout group to use its facilities, support from main sponsors IJ McGill Transport and Key Property Lawyers plus the participation of so many local people we are delighted to announce that more than £4,500 was raised in the quest to raise the funds for a new hall floor. The charity golf day held in June proved a massive success and along with other activities means we are making good progress towards our total. Calling local businesses Have you seen the advertising publication brochure we are putting together? We are selling ¼, ½ and full pages in our 30-page brochure that will be distributed locally at great prices. Publication will be mid-July and will be in circulation for the rest of 2016. Contact Izzi Surridge on 0117 300 3000 or email izzi@ weardna.co.uk to reserve a place or for more information. Our Giants need some help – could it be you? While the focus is well and truly

on finding the funds for a new hall floor, we are trying not to let that activity get in the way of the development of the young people. We are currently seeking adults who would like to spend some time supporting the leader teams by undertaking administration roles such as record keeping and activity prepping. These are not directly young people-facing roles, they could be undertaken by anybody with use of a PC. They could also be carried out both in the evening and during the day, and training is provided. Of course, we would never say no to someone who wanted to work directly with the young people – Beavers (six to eight years, Tuesday and Friday), Cubs (eight to 10 years, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday), Scouts (10 to 14 years, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), Explorers (14 to 18, Fridays). Simply email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk and we will tell you more.

Bear Grylls, Helen and James

James greets Chief Scout Bear at event

Who were these Giants, and can you name them? The year is 1928, the place Keynsham Scout HQ and, yes, it has a new floor! As Keynsham Scouts seek to find the funds for a new hall floor they would love to hear

from anybody who may be able to put a name to people in this picture or indeed may be related to them. This picture is the Scout Group taken at the opening of their new HQ in

what is now Ashton Way car park. If you have any information, call 0117 989 6455 or email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts. org.uk

A lucky Beaver Scout met Bear Grylls and had his neckerchief signed by the Chief Scout at the recent Avon County Jamboree. Six-year-old James from 1st Saltford Beaver Scout Colony has unilateral microtia and hearing difficulties but was able to converse with the TV adventurer using sign language. James’ mother Helen said: “James was thrilled to meet the Chief Scout, and used the Makaton sign for ‘thank-you’, which Bear obviously understood and signed back to him.” The jamboree at Westerleigh Showground was attended by around 4,000 people.

Dancers to perform at Disneyland

A group of young dancers from Keynsham have earned the chance to perform for crowds at Disneyland Paris later this year. Excited students from Keyford Dancing School are working hard on new routines after being selected to travel to the famous family attraction and entertain visitors. The girls performed at Keynsham Music Festival to raise funds towards the trip and Patricia Veale, who runs the school, said: “Keynsham Town Council has most generously awarded us a grant of £1,000, to help provide costumes and uniform for the group, for which we are most grateful. “We must also thank Keynsham Lions who sent us a cheque for £100 which has helped with the cost of rehearsals, and parents and friends continue to raise more money with sales and coffee mornings. “Thank you to the people of Keynsham for supporting the Keyford Dancing School over the years.”

News from Keyford Dancing School, including forthcoming performances and students’

achievements, can be found on the school’s Facebook page.

A Keynsham student has been offered the exciting opportunity to work as a hair and make-up artist at an opera house in France after impressing staff there. Caitlin Brennan, a Level 3 complementary, spa, beauty and media make-up student at Bath College, was part of a group who travelled to Lyon for work experience in hotels, spas and salons. The 18-year-old joined the team at the Opera Nouvel, home to the Opera National de Lyon and the Lyon Opera Ballet, taking part in meetings for a new production, helping with children’s hair for a dress rehearsal and face painting at a visitor open day attended by 12,000 people.

She said: “The opera building was huge. It went up 14 floors and then went underground five floors. Underground, there was a full stage – it was absolutely massive. “Having that work experience behind me is amazing, to say I worked in an opera house in Lyon. My best friend is working on a cruise ship at the moment and it makes me want to travel.” The Bath College students’ visit to Lyon was part of an Erasmus Plus trip – an EU programme offering opportunities for students to study, work and train abroad – and they were hosted by the Lycée Professionnel du Premier Film.

Changes at the top for growing academy trust Maths club adds a little braille to skills

Members of a Keynsham maths club invited a special guest to their last session of the year to teach them about braille. Ray Woodley, who is blind, brought his braille typewriter to the club at Community at 67 and taught the youngsters some words. Sheila Crocombe, who runs the club, said: “It was real privilege for us to meet Ray, the children had a great time and went away with a much better understanding of issues facing blind people, especially in communication.” The maths club will restart in September and is open to any child aged seven to 11 who wants to have fun with maths. Contact Community at 67 by email at community67@gmail.com or on 07737 742300.

Andrea Arlidge has stepped up to become chief executive officer of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust (WMAT). Mrs Arlidge was at the helm of Wellsway School as head teacher for 11 years, a role she has now handed to new principal Matthew Woodville. As well as Wellsway, the trust now includes another secondary school – The Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common – three specialist academies and a primary school, with two other schools currently taking steps to join. Mrs Arlidge said: “We are a genuinely local trust and have strong roots and connections across the region. My role is to oversee the collaboration both between our academies and with neighbouring schools and trusts so we can offer the best possible opportunities for all the young people in our area.” Mrs Arlidge is also a director of the Bath Education Trust,

Andrea Arlidge and Matthew Woodville chairman of Wesport, the County Sports Partnership for the West of England, and is vice-chair of governors at Bristol Grammar School among other roles. Mr Woodville has moved from his post as principal at Oldfield School in Bath to join Wellsway, working in a number of leadership roles at St Laurence School in Bradford-on-Avon and Oasis Academy Brightstowe in Bristol after switching to

teaching from a career in law. He said: “It is a privilege to be the principal of a respected school at the heart of its community and to work with other talented leaders within the trust, particularly Andrea Arlidge, who is an exceptional role model for us all.” Simon White, head of school at Wellsway, is moving on in September to become principal at John Cabot Academy in Kingswood.

Creating a buzz and preparing for campaign is all about. We will now keep our fingers crossed for Friday, July 15, and no doubt will be telling you all about our judging adventure in the August issue.

With just over a week to go before judges tour the town’s floral displays and community projects, Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James reports on a busy few weeks for volunteers, who have rolled up their sleeves to brighten up car parks and shopping areas and even had a go at flower arranging June has been a particularly hectic month for Keynsham in Bloom and our partnering community volunteers. Volunteers have been flat out, preparing our judging route, ensuring it’s up to Gold standard. We are pulling out all the stops this year, as we want to regain our Gold award for a second year running. Bloom volunteers, along with Keynsham Cubs and Scout Beavers, Community at 67 and St Keyna Green Team, have all joined forces on community projects around the town. Keynsham Cubs and Scouts have replenished the raised planters in Ashton Way with a summer floral scheme. The packs each took it in turn over four evenings to

Makeover creates a buzz in community

How many Cubs can you fit in a planter, Denise wondered, as the youngsters got stuck in to brighten up Ashton Way car park transform the planters. Everyone mucked in and really enjoyed their hour of gardening fun. At one point I started to wonder how many more Cubs you could fit in a planter! The Jubilee Crown in the Memorial Park has been replanted, and this year we have chosen a red, white and blue colour theme to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. We have even had a go at flower arranging, a little out of our comfort zone. We much prefer to go down the community and guerrilla gardening route. St John’s Church approached us to ask if we would like to take part in their flower festival, and we thought we would give it a go. There were some wonderful displays, and our chosen theme was “garden party”. It reminded me a little of The Generation Game, where you were provided props and given a certain amount

voice proof

of time to put your display together, but it was great fun and we were pleased with our end result. A Keynsham In Bloom Community Group Facebook page has been set up and this has attracted new followers, as well as some corporate sponsors. We would like to thank everyone who has liked our page and welcome new followers. It’s a great way of keeping up to speed with what we are up to and we will endeavour to post regular updates. Well, as I said earlier it’s been a really busy couple of months, but well worth getting out there with our community volunteers and let’s hope the judges can see what we have achieved since their visit last year. I for one would like to think we have grown and blossomed and residents, businesses and visitors to Keynsham are now beginning to really see what our Bloom

Queens Road, Keynsham was positively buzzing, when members of Community@67 and St Keyna Green Team recently came together as part of the Queens Road Makeover Project. Community@67 have for a number of months been wanting to brighten up their local shopping precinct with troughs and floral planters. Keynsham in Bloom Community Group stepped in to give them a helping hand and put together a funding request to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as part of the Greening Grey Britain Campaign. Both Keynsham in Bloom and Community at 67 were thrilled to bits when they heard they had been chosen by the RHS to receive £500 towards the project. The wooden planters now have pride of place along the shop fronts and many residents and shoppers stop to admire them. One resident and user of Community@67, Margaret Davies, was overwhelmed when she saw the planters and said: “In all my 57 years of Queens Road, we have never seen anything like this in our community, it is absolutely wonderful.” The Greening Grey Britain campaign is all about health, wellbeing and happiness and this project has ticked all the boxes,

that all-important judges’ visit...

Volunteers at work in Queens Road, creating floral displays outside the shopping area this is what Bloom is all about – transforming communities. The planters have definitely made a difference to Queens Road as this has never happened before. Chair of Community at 67 Martin Burton said: “We are really grateful to the Keynsham in Bloom group and the children from St Keyna School for their help with this project. It’s amazing the impact the three planters have had in brightening up our community. Community@67 would also like to thank Curo and Keynsham Town Council for their support in this project.”

Search for owners after items seized

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP The electorate has decided and the politicians must obey. The big decision to leave the European Union may not be reversed either by Parliamentary vote or by further referendums, both would treat the electorate with contempt. This applies equally to the implied promises of the Vote Leave campaign. The biggest of these is the promise to stop the free movement of people. Throughout the campaign the question of immigration resonated. The unfairness to people from other countries was part of this but so too was the view that uncontrolled migration put too great a strain on public services and reduced the wages of the poorest in society. The vote to leave was

unequivocally a vote to control our borders and significantly reduce net migration. At the same time it is important to reassure those who are already legally here that they have an established right that no one will seek to take away. The next implied promise relates to the money we send to the European Union and how it is spent. Clear promises were made that farmers, scientists, universities and some poorer parts of the nation would continue to receive money simply directly from the UK Government rather than the EU. This must be put into domestic law quickly. It was also made clear that the surplus would go towards the National Health Service, this too must happen.

July, 2016

The main slogan of Vote Leave was “take back control” and this must be turned into action. Any new relationship with the EU cannot allow the European Court of Justice to determine our laws and no directive or regulation from Brussels may become part of our law automatically. These three things, free movement, money and law are the red lines of any future deal with the EU. There will inevitably be compromises that we are willing to make but the whole thrust of the referendum was a reassertion of control by the people against an establishment that was seen to have failed them. That failure would be reinforced if the implied promises were not kept. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Police are hoping to reunite owners with property seized by officers in Bath and North East Somerset. A number of TomTom and Garmin sat-navs, iPads and iPods are among the items, which are thought to have been stolen from vehicles across the area since April. One iPod is grey and black and has “David Webster” embossed on the back while other distinctive items include: a set of keys with a fob labelled “Studio 2”; a black wallet with a Prada stamp; a brown, red and cream zipped purse with a Radley London stamp and a blue Bath Cats and Dogs Home disc; and a rifle sight with a worn logo, possibly of an owl, in white. PC Roger Parker said some owners might believe their property had been lost rather than stolen as some of the thefts had not caused any damage. People can contact him online via www.avonandsomerset.police. uk/contact, or by calling 101 quoting reference 5216115114 or 5216121866.

Air quality ‘inaction’ plan lacks ambition I live on the A4 at the eastern end of Saltford village. This section of Bath Road is an Air Quality Management Zone (AQMZ). This is because the level of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant, exceeds one of the EU target levels. The main cause of emissions in Saltford is diesel cars which constitute 40 per cent of NOx emissions whereas petrol cars only contribute 11 per cent. HGVs contribute the second greatest proportion of these emissions. B&NES Council has produced an action plan, which may more accurately be described as an “inaction” plan. As the preamble to the B&NES decision on this plan makes clear: “There are currently no budgets aligned for implementation of any of the recommendations highlighted.” The plan contains feeble measures such as targeted information for vulnerable groups and advice to land owners on planting to protect properties such as mine from pollution. These weak measures are made

weaker still by only having a target date of May 2018. In both cases, performance indicators are the number of hits on a website and the plan recognises that neither measure will have any effect on reducing the concentration of the pollutants in the air. Another feeble measure is the creation of a local “Air Quality Action Group” as if the problem is not already well enough understood and that it is B&NES Council that has the responsibility to act. The B&NES action plan for the Air Quality Management Zone in Keynsham is equally poor. B&NES Council should be lobbying Government to ensure that diesel vehicles meet tough targets on the road and not just in the lab. The total number of vehicles travelling on the A4 peaked in 2003 but there is a need to drive the number of vehicles down further in order to reduce air pollution. This is best achieved by understanding the origin and destination of journeys, relevant time of day, vehicle types, purpose of journeys, and vehicle occupancy so that evidence-based solutions can be found. Within the overall figures, the detail matters. For example, there are 1,400 vehicle movements a day through Saltford on the A4 by students and staff at the Newton Park Campus, Bath Spa University. There are heavy goods vehicles on long journeys, often pite stay in Britain. The Bristol branch of Chernobyl Children’s Life Line (CCLL) has organised a holiday for 18 youngsters, who will be staying with host families during July. The children will be taken on

I’m writing this letter in a concerned state of mind, it’s for the wellbeing of a well-known individual – “Harsh” – whose name is often observed here.

Having lived in Keynsham for nearly all of my 40-something years, I have seen many changes, improvements and expansions of our great town. I have witnessed the community spirit, the bond, the togetherness of, for example, the Remembrance Day celebration at the gates of our park. But recently something has become very clear, that we have a lost soul in Keynsham. His or her “tags” appear in numerous places: on buildings, signs, houses, shops, lamp-posts... I’m sure I’m not the only person who has spotted these “tags”, but I believe that someone knows who “Harsh” is – a friend, perhaps a brother, a sister, someone you know. Now, in and around Keynsham we have a great deal of events and clubs to keep “Harsh” occupied: the rugby club, the football club, the cricket club. Or if sport isn’t their thing then maybe knitting or an art class. No matter what, I think their cry for help or friendship is being missed and as the community of Keynsham I think we need to offer “Harsh” a cuddle because they must be lonely to have to constantly write their name everywhere! Please, “Harsh”, as someone who really likes Keynsham and the way it was designed to look, politely please stop writing your name everywhere and do something constructive. Thanks for reading... originating from Southampton Docks, which could be redirected onto more suitable strategic routes. With enterprise zones at Temple Meads and Bath Riverside set to increase the need for travel on the A4 corridor, step-by-step achievable objectives which reduce traffic volumes are required such as the Metro West rail project. A traffic expert believes that even low-cost changes to signage in the Bristol-Bath sub-region could reduce the volume of traffic and hence pollution levels on the A4 through Saltford. Locally, one measure that B&NES can implement immediately in Saltford is the provision of an electric vehicle charging point for Saltford for which special funding already is available. B&NES Council’s current Air Quality Management plans for both Keynsham and Saltford lack ambition, imagination, and commitment. Of course, the Tory Government may no longer bother about meeting EU environmental targets as its internal divisions have now led to the country leaving the EU. The action on drugs continued this month, with another Misuse of Drugs Act Warrant that was executed in the west side of Keynsham. A substantial grow with 21 nearly matured plants was seized and destroyed. The suspect for this is still being investigated and a decision will be made shortly as to the plants’ disposal. This time of year poses the force a number of problems with the extra cover required for another successful policing operation at the Glastonbury Festival and for the Euro 2016 football matches. All of this goes unnoticed for the local neighbourhoods, however, as we strive to give the same level of policing with reduced staffing. Reported anti-social behaviour is on the rise as we routinely see at this time of year – favoured “hang-outs” are Keynsham Memorial Park, with the bandstand and skate park both well-attended locations. We have also had a number of reports around Queens Road shops and park. We understand that Keynsham youth need to go somewhere and we do not want to stop this, but reports of damage and anti-social

with PC James Evans behaviour leave us with little option but to deal with offences and move groups on. Keynsham offers a number of youth activities from Cadets at the Territorial Army to the newly opened Time Out centre on Bath Hill. Reports of vehicle crime are still occurring across the Keynsham area although this has reduced since the influx we had earlier in the year. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to us. A reason this could have been reduced is that two males were caught in the Farmborough area, where overnight they had targeted 15 vehicles. Police responded to a call from a member of the public who was disturbed in the early

hours and noticed two people tampering with vehicles. He reported it and officers attended, catching the offenders red-handed and arresting them. l What we are up this this month: By the time of printing we will have policed the Keynsham Music Festival, which is one of the larger policing events for the Keynsham Town area. We are attending the Avon Fire and Rescue open day on Saturday, July 16, with our mobile police station. This is a chance for you to visit the new site at Durley Hill in Keynsham and get a better understanding as to its use. We will also be at a number of schools and fetes with our police vehicles – if you see us, come and say hello.

Salon team’s star quality shines through at top awards ceremony With the focus usually on making customers look and feel their best, the team from a Keynsham salon recently found themselves in the spotlight at a prestigious award ceremony. Hair and Beauty Boutique, in the High Street, scooped Star Salon of the Year 2016 against competition from across the South West and Midlands in Reflections Training Academy’s Time to Shine Awards in May. The salon, which has been under the management of Gemma King since March, works with the Reflections chain to provide apprentices with invaluable work experience, giving them essential hands-on training as they study for their qualifications. The 12-strong team at Hair and Beauty Boutique is well placed to give young talent a great start in the industry, with some members of the team boasting 25 years’ experience and a wide range of services provided under one roof. A well as a hairdressing service that caters for all ages and styles, including wig dressing, the salon specialises in wedding hair and make-up, offering complete bridal packages. Women and men can both choose from a wide range of treatments provided by the salon’s experienced beautician, including Sienna Hot Wax, facials and massage, Sienna spray tans, eyelash and brow tinting and ear piercing. Those who like to pamper themselves with a manicure or pedicure can also visit the nail technician and choose from OPI gel polish, nail art, acrylic nail extensions and bio sculpt shellac nails. Always looking to add to

their skills, the salon team keep themselves up to date by attending a variety of hair and beauty shows, events and courses, receiving Vidal Sassoon, Wella, L’Oreal, Olaplex and Patrick Cameron training. Guinot products and facials will also soon be added to the salon’s repertoire. The salon prides itself on a relaxed, friendly, personal service, says Gemma, and future plans include the redevelopment of the courtyard, to provide clients with a pleasant outdoor space to relax during treatments,

the perfect spot to sip a glass of complementary wine offered to those with later appointments. The salon will also be extending its work with budding hairdressers and beauticians by offering Level 1 pre-apprenticeship places to youngsters to enable them to gain college placements and help them take their first step into the industry. Gemma adds: “We are always looking for people to join our team with new services or products – contact me on 0117 986 3896.”

Matthew brings poets’ Great War story to stage in directorial debut A former Wellsway student will be making his directorial debut this month when he brings a play set in World War I to Bath. Matthew Bromwich is currently studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, where he has one year left of a three-year acting degree. Along with two of his LIPA colleagues, Matthew has launched a new theatre company – Threedumb Theatre – and their first stage venture is Stephen McDonald’s play Not About Heroes, which comes to Bath’s Mission Theatre on July 18-20. Directed by Matthew, the play uses real diary entries, letters and poems to paint a vivid picture of the Great War, focusing on the friendship of poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, played by Stephen Smith and Duncan Riches. The trio are taking the play on tour to commemorate

Pen to Paper The Bearded Laydee Tight rope walkers, flying trapeze, Clowns that forever gay be. Nothing there that interests me, For I’m in love with the Bearded Laydee. It’s coming up to the end of the month, And very soon they’ll pay me, And then I’m going to ask her out. For I’m in love with the Bearded Laydee. I’ll offer to wine her and dine her in style, And hope that her answer won’t nay be. I’m sure I’d die if she turned me down, For I’m in love with the Bearded Laydee. Has she ever noticed me? Will I get her to say “oui”? I wonder if she feels the same way too, For I’m in love with the Bearded Laydee. Will this be the start of a lifetime of bliss? Will we many a happy day see? I must pluck up the courage and see what she says, For I’m in love with the Bearded Laydee. George Liddell

Wildlife is thriving, from woodland to railway lines Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group enjoyed two inspiring field outings in May and June, to contrasting sites of special wildlife interest in South Gloucestershire and North Somerset, writes chairman Dave Sage. The May trip was to Filnore Woods in Thornbury, a local nature reserve, where we were expertly guided by enthusiastic reserve manager Jerry Dicker. The reserve boasts a diverse range of habitats, including rough grassland, coppiced woodland with standards, hedgerows and scrub. In spite of the persistent drizzle, we heard plenty of birdsong, including goldcrest, chiffchaff and song thrush. The June weather was much improved as we visited two sites near Yatton. The first site was the wildlife garden of Sal Pearson, champion of organic gardening and bee conservation. Although only about a third of an acre in size, the garden is superbly designed, divided into hedgelined glades, the centerpiece being a magnificent pond, only a year old but colonized with emergent plants such as water lilies, yellow flag iris and arrowhead, supporting a host of pond invertebrates. Each glade is packed with dozens of colourful plants intended to attract pollinators, particularly bees. The second site (after a good lunch of local produce in the Strawberry Line café) was the Strawberry Line nature reserve, managed by Faith and Tony Moulin, founder members of YACWAG (Yatton & Congresbury

Exploring Sal Pearson’s wildlife friendly pond and garden near Yatton, above, and a tour with Jerry Dicker at Filnore Wood, below Wildlife Action Group). They described the immense efforts needed to connect the end of the line with Yatton main line station, by means of a wildlife corridor flanking the cycle track. The first managed area was a series of glades, formerly rail workers’ allotments, where tree management has enabled ground flora to thrive. Beside the former railway, the original limestone ballast on the track still provides an ideal substrate for dozens of species of lime-loving plants. These in turn support a range of insects, including butterflies like the common blue and red admiral. l Contact the AWT group on keynshamawt@gmail.com.

Church filled with flowers in honour of Queen’s 90th birthday Floral displays celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 90 years were admired by around 1,000 people as St John’s Church in Keynsham hosted a flower festival in honour of the royal birthday. From Keynsham Guides and Brownies to the WI, Royal British Legion and other local churches, groups from across the community produced themed arrangements, with sponsorship

coming from a number of businesses and organisations. Local flower arrangers demonstrated their creativity as they put together displays to reflect many aspects of the Queen’s life, including her coronation, wedding, the Commonwealth, her love of dogs and her yacht Britannia, and her silver, golden and diamond jubilees.

A little rain, but the flow as event Families and nature-lovers poured into Keynsham Memorial Park for a day of activities focused on the town’s rivers and their wildlife. The Festival of Nature came to the town for the first time on June 19, as it made its way from Bristol to Bath along the River Avon. Dreamshed Theatre gave an open-air performance of Wind in the Willows on the Bandstand while a range of stalls and activities allowed visitors to take a look at life on the riverbank and under the water’s surface. Youngsters were invited to explore habitats in the park and find out how to make homes for nature in their own back gardens with the RSPB, while members of the University of Bath’s Water Innovation and Research Centre tested people’s water awareness with a quiz. Among the local groups taking part in the event were Wellsway School Green Team and the Keynsham branch of the

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome Almost 20 keen walkers congregated at the Hope and Anchor car park for a fourmile walk around the Midford countryside on June 26. Some had taken up the offer of the Dial-a-Ride minibus to get there – many thanks to Terry Hopkins for giving up his Sunday to help us. It was a warm, overcast day as we headed off along the route of the old Somerset and Dorset railway – it is now a cycle path that goes from Bath towards Frome via Radstock. We soon encountered a feature that is not seen too many times, and that is a rail bridge straddling another rail bridge, straddling a road bridge, straddling a river! After about a mile we headed off across the fields and byways through Lower Twinhoe and skirting Middle Twinhoe, with panoramic views across the

Midford Valley. Heading north, we then encountered a onemile-long difficult section which was dark because of the dense tree canopy over the footpath, but also had mud, running water, large loose stones and big steps. By looking after each other we were able to traverse this section without mishap, albeit very slowly. We then came to the

prettiest part of the walk back to Midford following Cam Brook and along the towpath of the disused Somerset Coal Canal, going under the viaduct of the old railway. We stopped to see the refurbished Midford aquaduct, which carried the old canal to Radstock. It was exactly two hours later that we arrived back in the Hope and Anchor car park, a quick change of

footwear, and then headed into this lovely hostelry. We were well looked after by the cheery and helpful staff. Everyone agreed that this was one of the best walks of the year so far. Future walks l Sunday, July 17 – Meeting the minibus at the Fox and Hounds car park at 10am, we head to our starting point at Pensford, where we walk back to Keynsham and stop at a pub. l Sunday, August 21 –Meeting at the Memorial Park cafe, at 10am, we will spend a couple of leisurely hours on our popular yearly walk around the gardens of Keynsham that have entered the Keynsham In Bloom competition. Parks team praised at national awards

Club saddened by loss of dedicated Rotarian John John Wetherill’s wise counsel and enthusiasm will be sadly missed by his colleagues in the Rotary Club of Keynsham, who have paid tribute to him here

It is with great sadness that we record the death of one of our valued members, John Wetherill. John was a stalwart of our club and a great enthusiast for the Rotary movement. John hailed from Southampton and spent most of his working life in banking. He was the manager of the Midland Bank in Keynsham before becoming assistant manager at the Milsom Street, Bath branch. He then took early retirement when HSBC acquired the Midland Bank. Living in Upper Weston, Bath, John became very active in local affairs, joining

Bath Round Table. He was treasurer of the Scouts’ District Finance Committee for many years and also president of the Bath Institute of Bankers. John joined the Rotary Club of Keynsham in 2008 and quickly immersed himself in club activities. He was particularly

33

keen on raising the profile and money for Rotary Foundation, which funds major international projects and in particular the eradication of polio throughout the world, which has now virtually been achieved. John’s experience in business was invaluable and his wise counsel was sought and appreciated by many. John became president of the club in 2011. We are indebted to John for his dedication and hard work on behalf of our club and remember him with great affection and appreciation of his loyalty and enthusiasm. We extend our deepest sympathy to Hilary and family and hope that the knowledge of the high regard in which John was held by his Rotarian friends, will be of help at such a difficult time. John’s funeral took place on Tuesday, July 5.

The Parks team at Bath and North East Somerset Council has been highly commended for its work to keep the area’s public spaces, including Keynsham Memorial Park, looking their best. The Horticulture Week Custodian Awards were held at the end of June at Chelsea Physic Gardens in London to celebrate the best park, garden, tree and green space management in the country. The B&NES team was awarded a high commendation in the Best Urban Parks Team category. Councillor Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), Cabinet member for community services, said: “Our unsung Parks team do a fantastic job and they thoroughly deserve this recognition for the work done to maintain our parks and green spaces. Their skill and ability create facilities that are not only beautiful but encouraging to use. I would like to thank all the team for their hard work and congratulate them on this achievement.”

Live well in later life Abbeyfield Bristol and Keynsham Society offers supported housing for independent older people, with houses in Redland and Henleaze in Bristol, and Easter Compton and Hanham in South Gloucestershire. We‘re very excited about our newly-refurbished, state-of-theart supported house which is re-opening soon in Westbourne Avenue in Keynsham, just off Charlton Road. Contact us now to find out more about living with Abbeyfield. Or if you’re interested in working with us, we’d also love to hear from you.

What exactly is supported housing? It’s a question we’re often asked… We don’t run “care homes” or “old people’s homes”. We aim to help older people enjoy as independent and as active a lifestyle as possible, for as long as possible. The well-being of our residents and the enhancement of their quality of life lies at

the very heart of everything we do. All our houses have lovely communal sitting rooms and dining rooms for residents to socialise in, and beautiful, extensive gardens which we’re very happy for residents to help out in if they’d like to. Abbeyfield provides the perfect blend of independence, support, privacy and companionship. Our residents all have their own self-contained flats within our houses, which they make a real home-fromhome. All flats have en-suite bathrooms and many have small kitchen areas, too, with good storage, a fridge, a sink, a microwave and so on. All meals are included in our fees – residents enjoy lunch and supper together, and can choose whatever they wish for breakfast, so they can prepare it themselves at a time to suit them. Our weekly charges are significantly lower than you might think. All food is included,

STORAGE

Should you need to store items, Wild & Lye Removals are able to offer you a variety of Secure & Confidential storage facilities to suit your household or commercial storage requirements, from single boxes to entire households or office contents. as are all utilities, council tax, TV licences and so on. Our aim is to be affordable to everyone, and we’re very happy to give guidance on benefits and allowances if required. The benefits of supported living are evident – freedom from the stresses and strains of having to maintain a property, freedom from worrying about looking after yourself well, preparing meals and eating properly, freedom from feeling isolated, lonely and vulnerable… It offers a new lease of life, new experiences and activities, new friendships and a renewed sense of “joie de vivre”! And, for peace of mind, we

Celebrating friendship as Mencap Society marks 50-year milestone

Photo: Keynsham & District Mencap Society

Keynsham & District Mencap Society marked 50 years of the National Federation of Gateway Clubs with a big party at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park on Sunday, June 12. Here the society reports on a fitting jubilee celebration. People with a learning disability and their families, staff and volunteers from the society, as well as guests from other local groups across Bath and Bristol, came together to celebrate the wonderful work and achievements of the National Federation of Gateway Clubs over the last 50 years. The society was pleased to welcome some valued guests and supporters from the local community, including Alan Hale, the new chairman for B&NES Council, Eveleigh’s estate agents, iTeam Solutions, and members of Keynsham Town Council. The sun shone as over 300 guests joined together and enjoyed a barbecue, live music, pets corner, tractor rides and giant play barn. There was even impromptu karaoke from some of the society’s members. The event was held at the start of Learning Disability Week and this year’s theme was very appropriately “Friendships”. The Gateway Federation was created in 1966 to provide regular leisure and social opportunities for people with a learning disability, and brought together likeminded groups to work together. Laura Jefferies, operations manager for the society, said: “It

was a fantastic event and great to see so many people with and without a learning disability coming together to celebrate this milestone.” The society wishes to thank local Sainsbury’s, Tesco and

Young Adult Fiction

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library As the school summer holidays approach, this month’s book review will concentrate on the teenage age group. With thanks to Philomena Lee, Keynsham library assistant.

Young Adult Non-Fiction

l Bullies, Cyberbullies and Frenemies by Michelle Elliott A great, simple guide to learning how to beat the bullies. It will tell you what bullying is, where it happens and what you can do about it. Also learn how to make friends and respect yourself. If you are a bully, learn how can you change your behaviour. This book is laid out in a clear and concise way, with great personal stories and cartoons. There are also exercises and a list of resources for even more ideas and help. Please note that there is, as in the Adult Section, a recommended reading list for Reading Well aimed at young adults. Reading Well can help you cope with the pressures of life, feel better about yourself and boost your confidence using

l Tamar by Mal Peet This is a really interesting historical novel. It is aimed at a YA audience and the protagonist is a teenage girl, but I would recommend it for older age groups as well. Tamar was published in 2005, and I read it last year after learning that the author had recently died. The book initially reads like a historical thriller; it begins with the adventures of two English spies, codenamed “Tamar” and “Dart”, who are sent to Nazioccupied Holland in 1944 to work with the Dutch resistance movement. The parallel half of this story, though, is set in England in 1995, where a young girl, Tamar – apparently named for the river in Cornwall, at her grandfather's request – finds a box of mysterious coded messages in his flat after his death. As Tamar tries to learn more about her grandfather's life, the book jumps back and forth from 1944 to 1995. The stories are exciting and tense and there are themes of identity, trust, romance and growing up, which make the book ideal for teenage readers (given the historical setting, there are obviously some violent scenes and some upsetting events are discussed). l I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson This is a story about twin siblings, Jude and Noah, living

in California. The book starts with Noah's “side of the story”, when the twins are 13 years old and have a very close friendship, then following up with Jude, at the age of 16, who has drifted apart from Noah as they each deal with their own problems. The conflict between Jude and Noah could be quite relatable for anyone who has ever argued with a brother or sister and the family tragedy the twins have been through feels very moving and emotionally real. If you cry easily over books, as I do, this may set off your “allergies”! Despite some sad moments, though, this is quite an uplifting book. The twins clearly care about each other, even when there is some tension between them. Jude and Noah are very creative characters – part of the story focuses on Jude being accepted to a prestigious art school, while her brother is rejected. The descriptions of the art the twins make (sculpture for Jude, drawings and paintings for Noah) is a big part of the book, and is even reflected in the design of the book itself, especially the cover and chapter headings. The writing style is also quite poetic. It is perhaps a little bit longer than it needs to be, but it does take the time to wrap up the “loose ends”. I think this book would make a great summer read for teenagers, and for some older readers too. l Beautiful Broken Things by Sara Barnard Caddy, 16, views herself as quiet and boring, while her best friend Rosie is outgoing and outspoken, so she worries that she is not “interesting” enough in comparison. This seems to be confirmed when a new girl, Suzanne, arrives at Rosie's school and they immediately become friends. While feeling jealous of Suzanne, Caddy learns more about her and realises that her life is not as perfect as it might appear.

July, 2016

Caddy tries to imitate Suzanne, usually not with the results she hopes for, and is warned by her parents and other friends to avoid her – which has the opposite effect. It has a casual, chatty writing style and Caddy, as first-person narrator, can be very funny, especially when describing her own awkwardness or her attempts to be friends with both Rosie and Suzanne, who eventually start to dislike each other. There are references to some difficult subjects, such as mental illness, and the main characters are not always sympathetic. Overall, I think this is a good book for teenagers, with characters who are clearly trying to do the right thing (and sometimes failing).

Club grows charity fund with plant sale A spring fair drew crowds of visitors to the Fear Hall, helping the Rotary Club of Keynsham raise more than £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. A spokesman said: “Despite disappointing weather we had a very good attendance and our plant sales, coffee stall and raffle yielded a great result. “We are indebted to our local sponsors Sheila’s Plants, Broad-

leaze Nurseries and The Andrews Group for their support and to all the members of the public who visited our event. Thanks to all.” The raffle was won by Hilary from Bath, whose prize was a £30 voucher for Broadleaze Nurseries. The club has also challenged Keynsham schools to grow the biggest onion before the end of the summer term, which will be judged later this month.

Bookshop hosts ‘treasure’ hunt on shelves Shoppers hunting for the perfect beach read might find more than they bargained for at Keynsham’s Oxfam Books and Music Shop in the High Street. Staff have launched a “treasure hunt”, hiding a signed copy of a book by one of the nation’s most popular authors among the shelves. Hidden “in plain sight”, the lucky shopper will know they have found the book when they discover a congratulatory golden ticket. The shop stocks bestsellers, classics, travel guides, children’s titles and more and shop man-

ager Rhiannon Blackman said: “If the choice on offer is slightly overwhelming, ask our staff for personal recommendations because we are avid readers, too. The best thing about our books is that they are so affordable you can buy a summer’s worth of reading and change people’s lives for the better at the same time.” The shop also has a shelf dedicated to signed books, including AA Milne’s Winnie the Poo, signed by Christopher “Robin” Milne on sale for £29.99. Oxfam opened its first specialist bookshop in Exeter in 1971 and now has more than 140.

AAT

The Miss World competition was started by Eric Morley in 1951, but beauty competitions showing female flesh were nothing new, says Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society. In 1930, Saltford was well up with the times, as ever, in staging a Ladies’ Ankle Competition as part of the Village Fete and Masque held on July 5. This image is taken from the souvenir programme for the day. Unfortunately, there is no record of whose delightful ankles were awarded the most points by Mr Titley or of the prize she won.

Living Well with Andy Workman, practice director at The Beehive Natural Health Practice My wife Karen and I are keen cyclists and we often take advantage of the Bristol to Bath Cycle Path when we need to stretch our pedals. The other day on a visit to Bath, I was struck by the sight of a father teaching his young daughter to cycle. She made numerous attempts to “start off”, repeatedly kicking her pedals up to the correct position and intently watching her feet as she pushed off into another disastrous and short-lived wobble. “Look up,” was her dad’s advice, “look where you are going!” Of course, she ignored him again and again, but when she eventually did what he advised, she launched forward and kept going, with a smile of achievement that said everything about her thrill at success. The pride of her father was tangible. It suddenly dawned on me.

We often use that expression, “It’s just like riding a bike”, usually to explain how easy it is to do something that we’ve done before, even if it was some time ago that we last tried. It also struck me that life is like that too. All too often we focus too much on the tiniest detail of what we are doing (as the girl was focusing on her feet) but in actual fact, if we just go with the flow a little more, the details will sort themselves out. Her dad was right – “Look where you are going!” Many of us spend far too much time looking around us to see what else is going on, who else is about and where else to go. We lack focus and forward vision and then wonder why we never seem to get anywhere. We’re also too keen to explore other routes and destinations, when

if we stuck to our own path, we might find it leading to better places anyway. Most importantly, the young girl’s success came to a wobbly end when she looked back to see her father’s reaction – as proud as it was. Like her, we can be knocked off course if we spend too much time looking back. The past is gone, along with any influence we had in making it any different. If we ride through life as we would a successful cycle ride, we look forward, directing our focus on where we want to go. When we set out with that mental intention, our bodies tend to do all that is required to get us there and we reach our desired destination, goals and aspirations so much quicker. A shoulder glance can be a “lifesaver”, but it’s only momentary, before you look forward again

with confidence that nothing is behind you that can hurt. Just like our little friend, the first few times we set out like this, it can feel strange, wobbly and uncomfortable, but with practice most of us who try it end up travelling through life with relative ease, the breeze blowing through our hair and becoming fitter for it. We know there will be hills and sometimes it will be harder to make progress but after every challenge we can coast the downhill, taking a breather, readying ourselves for the next. It’s just like riding a bike. Once you master it, you’ll never forget how and if it seems too hard to start, remember – even Sir Bradley Wiggins had to start somewhere. “Look where you are going” – and enjoy the journey so much more.

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Battle of the Somme

The start of this month saw the 100th anniversary commemorations of the Battle of the Somme. This terrible battle along a front of just 18 miles lasted from July 1 until mid-November and cost some 350,000 British casualties, of whom approaching a quarter were listed as killed or missing. The losses touched almost every community, with 11 locally; it is sobering to remember just some of these young men. Private Shortman of Dapps Hill, Keynsham, lost his life on July 1 in the initial assault, while serving with the 1st Battalion Somerset Light Infantry. Gloucestershire Regiment Captain John Gilmore of Saltford died on August 22; he is listed as missing on the great memorial at Thiepval. We have a detailed account of the action in which Stanley Baker of Durley Hill lost his life on

September 16 while serving with the Somersets; it was probably his first day of fighting. Private Oliver Dukes of Saltford, of the same regiment, died on October 3, aged 24; his memorial is at Guillemont, near Albert.

The Nissen hut

It was also in 1916 that Major Peter Nissen of the Royal Engineers developed the design of the semi-cylindrical huts that came to bear his name. After review and input from fellow officers, the hut was put into production in August and over 100,000 were produced in World War 1. There were two principal constraints on the design: economy of materials and portability. The curved panels could easily be “nested” for transport and the prefabricated units were quick to erect and dismantle, with a typical

structure taking six men just four hours to construct. After a lull between the wars, production was revived in 1939 and hundreds of thousands of both the original design and variants made the Nissen hut truly ubiquitous during World War II. Its original purpose was to provide accommodation but it was utilized for many other roles, including churches and bomb/ammunition stores. This last use brings us close to home:

few Nissen huts survive but three, shown in the photograph, are still in use at the Burnett Business Park. During World War II, this was an ammunition depot supplying the anti-aircraft guns in Bristol and Bath. Now looking much smarter than this 1990s image, with new roofs, doors and so on, the buildings are still clearly recognisable and make a distinctive reminder of the site’s original use.

In Good Health with Sam Wright, at Running is easy… isn't it? Running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise and is one of the most popular in the UK. A staggering 11 million people recorded runs using a popular running app in 2015, with over 39,000 of these runners completing a marathon. In the Garden June has been a frustrating month, with some hot weather and some very poor days. I found some difficulty in getting the grass cut. If it was a bright morning the dew on the grass was too heavy and clogged the machine. Wait until the afternoon and quite likely along comes a

On the Plot July is the month when the majority of vegetables start to grow well and cropping can start when ready. June was a cool and wet month so the ground is nice and moist and the arduous task of watering by hand has been minimised. The damp weather encouraged the slugs and snails to feed and this year the numbers of these pests have been excessive. On my plot they have attacked plants that would normally be untouched, including potatoes and springsown broad beans. The autumnsown broad beans have finished cropping and the excess is in the freezer so the plants can

shower, or even a good storm. We have had considerable rain, according to my rain gauge. It recorded over 50mm for the month and the grass is full of moisture. I have uncovered several anthills, patches of soil forced up by the busy ants. I try to brush the anthills away when the soil is dry, but it usually finishes as a patch of mud. When it is dry, a scattering of lawn repair usually does the job. All the summer plants have shown quite spectacular growth. Crocosmia and the big white daisies are just about to burst, either side of two 6ft conical conifers. The roses have been blooming, with wonderful scents, and these plants are supported by several euonymous bushes, and a good edging of various heucheras.

There is plenty of work to be done in the garden, cutting and tidying the edges of lawns and paths, etc. The spring flowers need some cutting back, deadheading and clearing the remains of daffodils and narcissus. The hard standing in various parts of the garden produced some large self-seeds in the cracks and required some application of Path Clear or similar product. After some two weeks it is quite easy to remove the dead foliage, but it does look untidy until then. Not a lot of planting goes on now, but plenty of TLC is needed to keep the hanging baskets, tubs and troughs in good order. This year the begonias have flourished with only minimal dead-heading, and not too much watering. Maintenance of shrubs,

bushes, hedges and small trees seems to take considerable time, otherwise the smaller trees become large trees and sometimes overshade the lesser plants. We had a huge buttercup plant in a border and it required some effort to remove it, leaving a blank space. A gift of some sissirynchium came in useful and they were planted and look quite healthy. Apples, pears, plums and damsons are forming fruit, and soon will be the time to look them over, thinning as necessary to give a good crop. A William pear will soon be available to enjoy. It is a lovely time to be in the garden now, so get the work done and then sit back and enjoy the results of your labour.

be cut back or removed. This year’s strawberry crop has also been good despite attacks from woodlice leaving unsightly holes in the fruit and the runners are already appearing. If you want new plants then let them grow but otherwise remove them or your strawberry patch will become overcrowded. Dig up any old strawberry plants once they have cropped for a maximum of four years as they become less vigorous with age and only produce small fruit. Runner beans should have reached the top of the canes by now so don’t forget to pinch out the growing tip to encourage them to bush up and keep an eye out for early signs of black-fly on the undersides of the leaves.

If you see any, try removing or squashing them with your fingers before they take hold. Healthy plants can tolerate minor infestations but major ones can only be dealt with by spraying. Try using soapy water if you don’t like using insecticides as this dissolves the sticky substance where they are found. Without this “glue” the black-fly drop off the leaves. The level of seed sowing starts to decrease in July but there are some seed-sowing opportunities left. French beans can be sown but they will need some cloche protection in early autumn. Beetroot, peas, spinach, carrot, turnips and lettuce can also be sown. Outdoor tomatoes need some

attention as well. Make sure they are well supported with canes to stop them toppling over when the fruit sets. Pinch out any side shoots that appear to avoid them becoming a messy bush and when four fruit trusses have set pinch out the growing tip at two leaves above the top truss. If you try to get more trusses the chances are the fruit might not ripen and the plant’s energy is being diluted over a bigger area. Make sure the tomatoes are regularly watered as dry and wet spells may cause blossom end rot or fruit splitting. Finally, if you have not planted leeks yet then don’t delay as they provide a useful winter crop.

Could you become a friend in need?

Thought for the Month with Rev Ian Rousell, Curate, Keynsham Team Ministry Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock. There’s nothing like the sound of a ticking clock to make you feel agitated with the relentless passage of time, is there? If you’re downloading a file on the computer it will insist on telling you how many seconds you will have to wait. The constant countdowns on the TV to a major event. More than ever today we seem to feel the pressure to be constantly doing something, or to be somewhere. I feel we have become enslaved to time itself, locked in a constant battle to do as much as we can before the relentless sweep of the clock hands catches up with us. I came across a piece of advice recently which surprised me so much I had to read it twice – which probably cost me precious seconds. The writer was actually suggesting that

Taking life just a little slower, even for one can allow us to savour the art of conversation, appreciate the people around us

we should go out of our way to take time, rather than saving it. “Join the longer queue at the supermarket,” he said, “don’t hang up the phone when you get the irritating music and the assurance that ‘your call is important to us’.” Strange advice indeed! But perhaps he had a point. Sometimes the only way to savour life is to slow down and taste it. Otherwise the whole thing becomes like a microwave meal, cooked in seconds,

consumed in minutes and leaving you with nothing but a burnt tongue and an insipid taste in your mouth. Taking life just a little slower, even for one day a week, can allow us to savour the art of conversation, appreciate the people around us. The Bible tells us not only that “each day has enough worries of its own”, but also that God has made “everything beautiful in its time”. An eight-year old once wrote that the best thing about grannies was that “if they take you for a walk they go slowly past all the beautiful leaves and caterpillars and they never say ‘come along quickly’ or ‘hurry up’.” Whether you take your advice from the Bible, or even an anonymous granny today – whatever you do, take a little time.

A group of volunteers is appealing for more helpers to become a friend to people affected by mental health problems. Chew Valley and Keynsham Befrienders are matched on a one-to-one basis with people referred to the group by a wide range of agencies, visiting people in their homes, taking them out, accompanying them in chosen activities or even just providing a supportive phone call. The group is in need of more befrienders to meet demand – no formal qualifications or experience are needed, just a willingness to listen and recognise that that you don’t have all the answers, say members. Volunteers are supported by a co-ordinator and group meetings. The organisation is also looking for someone to help with its accounts and funding applications. Footballer Jack to play in the US A Wellsway School sixth-former is heading to the US this summer to take up a prestigious football scholarship. Jack Rhys-Jones’s performance in front of more than 50 scouts from the States led to him being spotted by Bethany College in Kansas, which has now offered him the chance to play for the Swedes soccer team alongside his university studies for the next four years. Jack said he was delighted to have secured a scholarship, which was gained through the PASS4Soccer Scholarship Network, which hosted a US Coach Showcase at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in Buckinghamshire in December. Jack said: “I chose to study in the USA as I would like to experience a different culture and be able to see other parts of the world while working towards a

degree. Furthermore, I want to improve myself as much as I can as a footballer and I believe that the athletic set-up in the USA will provide the best opportunity for me to do so. “I am most looking forward to playing with and competing against people from all over the world and getting to play the sport that I love at a very competitive standard. “I have chosen Bethany College because I feel I will get along with Coach Taylor really well. He is very enthusiastic about improving his players and getting the best out of them so I feel we have similar goals for the team and upcoming season.” Pass4Soccer will be holding trials this year for players hoping to enter a US university soccer programme in August 2017 and 2018. Julia conquers Gorge in cycling challenge Training with a charity enabled a Keynsham woman to complete the toughest cycle ride she has ever undertaken, conquering a gruelling climb up Cheddar Gorge. Julia Shahin joined Cycling UK’s 50-mile Get Gorge-ous Cycle Challenge on July 2, setting off as part of a group of around 50 riders from Long Ashton. Julia, who is a member of the national cycling charity, and her fellow cyclists had been building up their strength and stamina since early February, going on led training rides that grew from five miles to 50. The ride, organized by Cycle Bristol CTC, aims to help adults discover – or rediscover – the joys of cycling, with most of the participants female and aged over 50. Julia said: “The Get Gorgeous challenge has been a fantastic way to get to know lots of different routes for cycle rides around the Bristol area. Before the event, we went up every

conceivable hill within a 30-mile radius except Cheddar Gorge. “I am now more confident in traffic and sometimes even choose to cycle on a road rather than a cycle track. More importantly, I have met lots of lovely people who have been very supportive. “There have been plenty of cake stops and I am sure the local economy will miss our training rides!”

Frys bowlers take top spot at halfway

The first half of the league season came to an end on Thursday, June 23, when Frys travelled to Long Ashton, who spent last season in division 1, writes our correspondent. The home side got much the better start, pulling away on Rinks 2 and 3. Frys countered on Rink 1 and slowly pulled away. At halfway, it was Long Ashton with the lead. Frys started pulling that back, but Rink 2 dropped a sizeable count at just the wrong the moment. This didn’t deter Frys, and with Rink 1 winning, it set up a close finish. In the
