Traders call for action to revive town’s High Street
Help us to help Keynsham, shop owners urge council Help us to help Keynsham – that’s the message from traders in the town’s High Street and Temple Street to council chiefs overseeing the new one-way system. Business owners have held a “crisis meeting” with representatives from Bath and North East Somerset Council to discuss a worrying drop in footfall, with some of the independent shops reporting that their trade has dropped by as
much as 30 per cent. Concerns have been raised by the business owners that the new road layout is confusing and discouraging visitors, while signage for the town’s car parks isn’t clear enough, they say. The trial of a one-way system along Keynsham High Street was introduced in May in a bid to ease traffic in the town centre and make the shopping area more pedestrian-friendly. Maria Spill, of Café Crème,
called the meeting on June 19, after she and her neighbours noticed that despite traffic flowing well along the High Street, business was worryingly slow for many. She said: “We just weren’t getting the usual number of visitors and, after talking to many of the other businesses in the High Street and Temple Street, it became clear we weren’t the only ones. ‘Community will have final say on one-way scheme’ From Page 1 really upset and really worried that this will continue so the meeting was called urgently. “We aren’t blaming the oneway scheme as many of us have noticed that things have been quieter for a few months with work going on in the street to relocate the bus stops. But things have come to a head since the one-way system began.” At the meeting, which was attended by councillors and officers from B&NES Council’s economic development and transport departments, traders put forward a number of suggestions, including printed maps showing the routes around the new system for both residents and visitors, large maps at either end of the High Street featuring local businesses, clearer signage for parking and help with raising Keynsham’s profile on social media. The town’s car parks should also be better promoted, particularly the free parking on Saturdays in Bath Hill East car park, which many locals and visitors weren’t even aware of, said the traders. Temple Street business owner Andy Hawkins, from Bath Ink and Toner, said while it wasn’t ideal that cars couldn’t go from the High Street straight into Temple Street, the measure that would make the most difference to businesses and shoppers
would be to introduce a period of free parking in the car parks. He said: “A free hour or 90 minutes would be a massive gesture to try to get people back in. It’s now become inconvenient for people to just pop in as they have to go round the system. It would have a huge impact for businesses.” Maria added: “We are very grateful that we are being listened to. We have put up with a lot for the past few years and we feel they owe us a bit of help. There are a lot of independent businesses here, which is an asset, and to keep them here they need to help us to help Keynsham and get trade back to where it was a few years ago before the redevelopment began.” B&NES said it is acting on comments and feedback on the one-way trial and it would be the community that has the final say on whether the scheme is made permanent. n NEWS said: “Since this trial scheme started we have been listening to all of the comments made by residents and traders, and we are taking steps to try and address many of the concerns which have been raised. “In particular, we are keen to ensure the scheme is safe for all road users and encourages greater footfall onto the High Street in order to support the many local businesses in the town. The need to improve the shopping environment and support the High Street are some of the main reasons a one-way system has been talked about for many years, so we need to make sure it is fulfilling this objective. “Clearly any new traffic layout can take time to get used to, but equally we have to balance this with the immediate needs of the local community. We are therefore taking a series of actions in response to the concerns raised, such as improved signage for motorists, better awareness of the parking that is available in the town, and discussing with traders what
more can be done to encourage people to use the High Street. A key message we want to send out is that Keynsham is fully open for business. “There will be further opportunities for residents to give their feedback in the coming weeks, and ultimately it will be for the Keynsham community to decide whether or not to make this system permanent.” Traffic monitoring data will also be made available to the community, the council has said. Role model award for keen sportsman Zach A talented young swimmer has been honoured as an outstanding role model, receiving the Jack Boulton Award. Zach Derrick, a Year 11 student at Wellsway School, was nominated for the accolade by Ally Headford on behalf of Keynsham Swimming Club in recognition of his achievements and for the time he spends supporting the younger members of the club. As a member of the swimming club since the age of eight, Zach’s ability was immediately spotted and by the age of 10 he had achieved his first regional time and competed in the South West Regional Championships. By 11 he was recommended to the City of Bristol Performance Club where he is now a member of the Senior Youth Performance Squad, training 16 hours per week. He still always finds time to swim for Keynsham Swimming Club and work with the younger swimmers.
The Jack Boulton Award is presented annually by the Keynsham and Saltford Sports Network to a young sportsman or woman in memory of Jack, from Saltford, who died in 2009 at just 17. Louise Riddoch, director of specialism at Wellsway, said Jack and Zach shared many of the same qualities. She added: “It was wholly appropriate that the award was presented to Zach by Lynn Bartlett who is retiring after 30 years coaching at the club. “Thanks go to Lynn for her outstanding contributions over 30 years and huge congratulations to Zach for this well-deserved award.”

How to improve Park Road will be put to residents

Residents will be asked how they think traffic could be improved in Keynsham’s Park Road following years of complaints over speeding, potholes and disturbance. Local councillors say Bath and North East Somerset Council has now committed to carrying out consultation with neighbours about how to make the route down to the new Meadows development safer. Level 3 IT student Peter Day, who studies at Bath College, hopes to raise awareness of the news service for blind and partially sighted people. He said: “The charity wanted the website (www.ktn.org.uk) to be clear and easy to use, allowing people to navigate it themselves.

n NEWS underlying problem here is that the Planning Inspector should never have allowed there to be only one access road into and out of this development. However, we now have to look at how best to improve the situation we are faced with. “Resolving the problem through highway engineering is not straight forward. We have considered ‘build outs’ to create a chicane, but that would result in the loss of some parking spaces. Speed tables are another trafficcalming measure but I am aware that where they have recently been installed on St Ladoc Road, residents have raised complaints over the noise as vehicles bounce over the table. Therefore our aim is to give all local residents a formal chance to have their say and give their views to the council, and then out of that we can hopefully achieve a solution that the majority of residents can give their support to.” Any work that is decided upon will be subject to funds being allocated in future council budgets.
A much-hoped-for relief road connecting the site with Charlton Road, supported by both Cllr Hale and fellow ward councillor Lisa O’Brien would not be viable, according to a scoping report from the council, which pointed to potential ecological harm from the removal of trees and hedgerows and the difficulty of negotiating with 14 different land owners along Parkhouse Lane. Construction at The Meadows is due to be completed by summer 2018 and a spokesperson for developer Taylor Wimpey said: “We recognise that we have a responsibility to keep disturbance to our neighbours to a minimum during our construction operations, and this is a responsibility we take very seriously. “We regret that people living near The Meadows have experienced inconvenience and disruption and we will continue to listen to residents’ concerns and try to put right any problems which are brought to our attention.”

Metro mayor joins house’s official launch The West of England metro mayor Tim Bowles joined residents at a Keynsham retirement home to celebrate the completion of a major refurbishment. Mr Bowles met families and volunteers and other guests at the official opening of Abbeyfield House in Keynsham on June 17. “My role is all about bringing together communities, and this is a house where there is a very strong sense of community,” Mr Bowles said. “It’s wonderful to see everyone come together to

How can I help my pet in hot weather?
U
nlike us, cats and dogs only have sweat glands in their paws and around their nose, which makes it difficult for them to regulate their temperature – this can lead to overheating and heat stroke on hot days. Make sure they have cool, shaded areas to relax in and plenty of fresh, cool water available. Keep your house cool and never leave them in a hot car. It can take as little as 15 minutes for a dog to die in a hot car. Always have water with you when you take them out, and try to walk dogs when it’s cooler – either early in the morning or later on in the day when it’s cooler. Bear in mind that pavements can become extremely hot and burn their paws.
Heat stroke in cats and dogs
All cats and dogs can suffer from heat stroke, however, it's much more common in dogs, particularly those that are overweight or flatfaced breeds (French bulldog, pug, English bulldog etc). There are a number of possible reasons why we are less likely to see cats with heat stroke: they are generally smaller and more agile than dogs and find it easier to search out cool places to sleep, they don't go for walks with humans, they don't chase balls and they don't tend to get left in cars.

• Fast and heavy panting
• Excessive drooling • Increased pulse and heartbeat • Vomiting • Dark-coloured (red or purple) gums or tongue • Excessive thirst • Very high body temperature • Weakness, unsteadiness or collapse • Seizures or unconsciousness
How to cool your pet down
If you suspect that your pet is suffering from heat stroke, move them to a shaded area and call your vet urgently. NEVER immerse your pet in very cold water as this can lead to shock. The best way to cool your pet is by temporarily placing cool wet towels across their body and/ or positioning them next to a fan. Allow your pet small amounts of water to drink and continue to cool them until their breathing starts to settle. Wet towels should not be left on for more than ten to 15 minutes, otherwise they can start to heat them up rather than the towels cooling them down. Take them to the vet immediately for further treatment. Please do not, under any circumstances, leave your pet unattended in a car during a hot day. The Lions Club of Keynsham and District will be launching hundreds of plastic ducks into the River Chew from the footbridge for the annual duck race. Two Keynsham PCSOs who saved a man’s life while risking their own were among officers honoured at an awards ceremony that celebrated bravery, professionalism and dedication to policing. PCSOs Sarah Hewlett and Christopher Purvey received Royal Humane Society Commendations at the force awards in Bristol on June 19 in front of colleagues, Chief Constable Andy Marsh, Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens, the High Sheriff of Bristol Anthony Brown, and Angela Yeoman OBE. Responding to reports of a drunk and aggressive man sleeping rough in a car in Keynsham in February last year, PCSO Hewlett called for back-up from PCSO Purvey when the man told her he wanted to end his life. The situation became volatile when the man poured petrol over himself, covering the two officers, and threatened to set himself alight. The PCSOs spent the next 20 minutes restraining the man and trying to calm him down as he repeatedly tried to grab a box of matches from the car. He was eventually arrested and detained under the Mental Health Act. A force spokesman said: “PCSOs Hewlett and Purvey acted with extreme bravery, putting their duty before their own safety and their instinctive actions and communication skills saved this man’s life. For their professionalism and skill, they are awarded the Royal Humane Society Commendation.” There were also Chief Constable’s Commendations for 16 officers, including Keynsham beat manager PC James Evans, in recognition of their actions in the aftermath of the fatal tipper truck crash in Bath, which left four dead in February 2015, including four-year-old Mitzi Steady. The group were honoured for the team commitment and professionalism they showed as they worked at the scene of the tragedy in the early stages of the investigation, providing support and comfort to distressed and traumatised people and establishing a secure area to preserve evidence.
A spokesman said: “They secured witnesses and provided welfare checks and ensured the deceased were treated with dignity and respect, staying with them for a long time until they were removed from the scene. “The area remained secure and the road closed for three days, with officers all working tirelessly to secure the area and maintain cordons. This greatly aided what would become a complex 22-month investigation, which led to the conviction of two men for four counts of gross negligence manslaughter in December 2016.” Those receiving the commendation were: PC James Evans, PC Caroline Davey, DC David Ives, PC Sean Vine, Inspector Sarah Treweek, PC Daniel Wallwork, Anthony Unthank (now retired), Chief Inspector Paul Underhill, Inspector Clive Summerill, PCSO Brian Harris, PC Douglas Whapples, PC Michael Dyne, PC Jason Smith and PC Louise Newton, all from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, and PC Alan Kyne and Sergeant Scott Hill from Wiltshire Constabulary. Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “As the Queen said recently in her birthday celebrations, it’s a sombre time for the country at the moment. But today is a chance to reflect on all the amazing and important work you do. I don’t get the chance often enough to say thank you, so it’s wonderful to have that opportunity today. “In my view there are three things which make the world of policing go round: firstly, it’s knowing that this is one of the most important roles you will do in your lives, right at the heart of society; secondly, you have optimism and hope that the future can be better, and you help the people you deal with to feel this way too; and thirdly, you do your job with caring and compassion in your heart. Thank you for all that you do.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mounstevens said: “The Chief Constable has used words today like ‘jawdropping’ to describe what you do, and he is right. Eleven-year-old Phoebe Nethercott was cheered on by friends and family, including mum Trish and dad Chris, at Keynsham’s Bonzo Lounge on June 24 as she had her head shaved in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Hairdresser Laura Holbrook wielded the clippers as brave Phoebe said goodbye to her blonde hair – happy in the knowledge it will be going to the Little Princess Trust to help make a wig for a cancer patient and that she has finally realised an ambition she has held since seeing popstar Jessie J shave

A piece of the past could be restored in a nearby village with the help of supermarket shoppers. Volunteers and parish councillors in Compton Dando are hoping to return an historic finger post to its original state with a donation from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. The project has been entered into the scheme during July and August, when shoppers at the Keynsham, Saltford and Longwell Green stores can vote for it to receive funding. The cast-iron finger post, on the village’s Millennium Green, has been repainted by volunteers and needs one finger replaced while another needs to be repaired, work which needs to be carried out professionally. Customers will cast their votes using tokens given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. The grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 come from the 5p

Police appeal after cow’s body found
Police are appealing for information after a farmer discovered a dead cow near Bath. The grim discovery was made during a livestock check at Charmy Down, when the farmer discovered the animal’s body, which had some parts of its face and tongue removed.
Police believe it happened overnight on June 10/11 and a spokesperson said: “This is an unusual and distressing incident and we are keen to hear from anyone who may have information.” The Rural Crime Team can be contacted via the 101 number or text information to 07492 888109. I
am hoping by the time this gets printed the weather has cooled down a little – not that I don’t enjoy the warmth but when you’re wearing full uniform and a stab vest in the blazing sun it can get a little uncomfortable. This month we have had a number of complaints of thefts of potted plants and hanging baskets. These offences are widespread over Keynsham but I believe a number are going unreported. I know you may think it’s a waste of time but if we don’t know about it, then we can’t police it. In this area we have suffered with these types of offences before, where the plants were being stolen and sold

on at car boot sales. If you believe someone is skulking around in the hours of darkness then please tell us as you may help us apprehend an offender and prevent further offences. On the subject of plants, you will have noticed the old bikes that have been decorated with flower boxes and planters. These are part of The Great Bike Trail, but unfortunately some have been damaged and I know that Sponge Bob from the top of Charlton Road has had his body stolen twice. If you see anyone tampering with the bikes then please either challenge them or report it to us. On the evening of Friday, June 9, Keynsham was visited by some criminals from out of our force area. They brought with them a number of counterfeit Scottish £20 notes and proceeded to purchase lowvalue items, accepting the change from a number of local businesses. When dealing with money, especially notes you are not familiar with, take your time and look at all the details. Remember, the real notes cost a great deal of money to
make, and so they will not have any defects and the printing will also be symmetrical. If in doubt, keep hold of it and phone the police. As I said, these offenders managed to complete a large amount of transactions before leaving Bristol. Inquiries into these offences are ongoing – if you have suffered an offence and not reported it, please do so. Theft in general seems to be on the rise and one thing that is being stolen regularly are bicycles. We have seen offences in both Keynsham and Saltford where owners have entered shops without securing their cycles and have come out to find them gone. It takes seconds to steal a bike and most of the time they are worth hundreds of pounds. Today I stopped at the shops on Bath Road in Saltford to find a £2,000 road bike left insecure, with no sign of the owner, and if so inclined I could have easily taken it without being challenged. Please make the effort not to be a victim and use a lock. With summer weather causing or gardens to grow faster than
we can deal with them, this lends itself to rogue traders knocking on doors and offering to do work for what appear bargain prices. Be aware that anyone offering to do work at your door should give you a cooling-off period to consider the offer/quote, and to let you make an informed decision about it. If they try to rush you or offer discounted prices if you have it done straight away, they are not allowed to do this and must follow the rules set out by trading standards. If you’re not sure about them then do not agreed to work being completed and report them to us. Please speak to any elderly relatives you have, as they are normally the most frequently targeted. Keynsham Music Festival is just around the corner and although it will not rival Glastonbury’s scale, it’s a big event for Keynsham. Thousands of visitors will attend the various aspects of this festival. The neighbourhood policing team will be in attendance and so if you see any of the team out and about, please come up and say hello. PC James Evans

Volunteers roll up to refresh centre A well-used community centre in Keynsham has been brightened up for the many people who meet there thanks to a team of volunteers. Members of staff from Bath and North East Somerset Council gave a day of their time to St Francis Church Centre to help give its internal walls a fresh lick of paint. Thanking the volunteers, Jenny Minty from St Francis said: “We are really grateful to the team from Bath and North East Somerset Council for giving us their time to paint the centre, we could not have completed this without their help and it will be appreciated by everyone who uses our centre. “The centre now looks so bright and welcoming for all of our users.”
Brownies, toddler and baby groups and a lunch club are among the activities that are regularly held in the centre. Decorating the centre was one of 20 local projects put forward to staff at the council as part of the Employee Community Challenge, which gives staff the chance to volunteer in the local area. Councillor Paul Myers, the council’s Cabinet member for policy, localism and partnerships, added: “We were pleased to be able to help the St Francis Church Centre, the team enjoyed doing a practical job that would make a difference to the community and the church members ensured the team were all well fed and watered to keep them going throughout the day."

Big reunion brings More than 400 people attended a celebration to mark 60 years of Wellsway School in Keynsham. The Big Wellsway Reunion brought together students and former staff from all the decades of the school’s life. Organiser Louise Riddoch said some guests who had been students on the opening day were reunited with classmates they had not seen for about 50 years. “It was a wonderful event and we were blessed with amazing weather,” she said. “It was very special to have former heads Paul Kent and John Smith with us. “Tours of the school were very popular and everyone enjoyed sharing their memories.” Entertainment was provided by performers Hatty Campbell, Tom Stentafoot, Anya Hathaway and the Wellsway Choir. Wellsway School principal Matthew Woodville said: “This was a magical event. Many

Scouts cook up a storm for hospice in memory of young leader Francis While standing over a fire at camp cooking breakfast, one of the Scouts suddenly asked: “Why can’t we do this for Francis and raise some funds? Everybody likes a cooked breakfast.” Inspired by the legacy of late young Scout leader Francis Clifton, Dan Murphy, a close friend of Francis’s and now a Scout leader himself, took up the idea, with members of Keynsham’s Axe Troop happy to help. The youngsters set up a stall at Keynsham Farmers’ Market in June and cooked breakfast for shoppers throughout the morning. With cakes and drinks available and great support from the public, they raised a massive £730 towards the K222 CLF fundraising campaign, which was set up in memory of Francis to help Dorothy House. Thanks to all who got involved and the farmers’ market for their support, Francis would have been proud.

It was a fabulous effort and was recognised by the chair of Keynsham Town Council Lisa O’Brien, who joined them to lend a hand. A large number of Beavers from Keynsham attended the event, a really exciting and adventurous camp. They also slept well the following night! Trust to welcome two more schools Two more schools have joined the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, bringing the number of schools under its umbrella to ten. Chandag Infant and Chandag Junior schools have been given the go-ahead in principle to join the trust following consultation with staff and parents. They will join two other local mainstream primary schools, St John’s CofE in Keynsham and Saltford CofE, as well as the Aspire Academy in Bath and the new Bishop Hancock CofE Primary, which will open in east Keynsham in 2018. Governors of both schools have been told their academy orders have been approved by the Regional School Commissioner’s Office and both are expected to become trust members later this year. Leaders at the trust said it would enable even stronger collaboration and the sharing of
expertise. Dr Matthew Cottrell, director of primary and deputy chief executive of WMAT, said: “We are thrilled that these two schools have chosen to join the trust after consulting their staff and parents. “We already work closely with other schools in our locality but this formal partnership will enable us to develop those links still further and support one another to provide the very best education for all. “We will have a centre of excellence in Keynsham, with an infant and junior school, a large secondary and sixth form at Wellsway and specialist provision at IKB Academy providing unrivalled opportunities for children and young people.” By September 2018, Wellsway Multi Academy Trust will be educating around 4,000 young people aged from four to 19 across its 10 schools.

Beavers declare first camp a great success Youngsters from Keynsham met fellow Beaver Scouts from across the district at the first ever Wansdyke Beaver Camp. More than 120 boys and girls camped overnight at Chelwood and took part in activities including an assault course, skittles, painting, cooking, grass sledging and target practice. For many of the six to eight-year-olds it was the first
time they had been away from their families and they were accompanied by 40 leaders. Camp leader Phillipa Cozens said: “It’s good to let these youngsters have fun in the great outdoors and the opportunity to make friends from neighbouring Beaver colonies. “I think all the leaders are looking forward to catching up on some sleep!”
Singing club for teens comes to Keynsham A club for teenagers who love to sing pop or want to learn how is launching this September in Keynsham. Turn it UP is for 12 to 17-year-olds and will meet every Wednesday evening during term time from 7pm to 8.30pm at Somerdale Pavilion – and the first session is on Wednesday, September 13. SALTFORD MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society
Trips to Saltford were a treat for recuperating wounded soldiers during World War I. There they were entertained by a group of rowing club members, their wives and other ladies. Until the end of the war they were taken out to the boathouses on the river for a boat trip and given tea. It has been estimated that some 5,000 soldiers were made welcome in this way.

Two new leaflets to lead the way to area’s hidden history
The final two leaflets in a series that opens walkers’ eyes to the history around them in the Keynsham and Saltford area have been published. The series, produced by Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, aims to encourage families to enjoy walks in the countryside while learning about local heritage at the same time. Richard Dyson, from the society, said: “A great deal of work has gone in to these and we are very pleased with the result. Our area has a rich history but without a guide it is easy to overlook this; there are lots of stories in our buildings and fields. We hope that these walks will give a little insight into the lives of previous generations in the area.” The leaflets are in full colour
and include a map, instructions and information on historical points of interest along the way. The newest leaflets feature a route from Keynsham to Saltford along the Avon Valley, and from
Chewton Keynsham to Compton Dando and Burnett. Both are circular, between five and six miles long and should take two and a half to three hours to complete. The leaflets were partly funded by a grant from Keynsham Town Council and a donation from the Waitrose Community Matters scheme. They are on sale at the town council offices in Temple Street from July 3. Copies will also be available at all the society’s events and will be published online at a later date.

Street collections in support of RNLI Shoppers in Keynsham and Saltford will be able to donate to a cause that saves lives in Britain’s seas. Supporters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will be carrying out street collections on Saturday, July 15, in Keynsham High Street and in front of the shops in Chandag Road and in Saltford. The collections will replace the charity’s usual house-tohouse fundraising and the charity said it hopes residents will be as generous as they have in previous years. Honorary secretary of Keynsham branch of the RNLI, Julian Hannam, said: “We hope this change will prove successful and should anyone feel able to assist in collecting in any of these locations, then would they please get in touch. Music from movies provides backdrop to wildlife park’s fundraising picnic Some of cinema’s most wellknown tunes will be setting the scene for a summer picnic that aims to raise money for two good causes this month. Bath Philharmonia will be taking to the stage at an open-air concert at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park on Saturday, July 15, to perform “Music from the Movies”. Families and music lovers are invited to pack a picnic to enjoy as they listen to classic and modern hits from a range of films. The event has been organised in aid of Jessie May, the Bristolbased children’s hospice at home charity, and St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester. Doug Douglas, Avon Valley’s owner and managing director, said: “This is set to be a wonderful one-off charity

Glorious displays show pride It's all hands on deck with just days to go before judges visit Keynsham to see the town’s floral displays. But even before then there has been plenty to keep Keynsham in Bloom volunteers busy, from bug houses to bikes and brightening up even more corners of Keynsham. Chair Denise James tells us more. We can’t remember a month that has been as busy as the past month. Keynsham has been buzzing with activity, with the Bloom team and community group volunteers preparing to welcome the RHS South West in Bloom judging team to Keynsham on Friday, July 14. It’s been great seeing so many people helping to make Keynsham look that extra bit special. Our High Street will soon be a blaze of colour, as the hanging baskets and street planters start to bloom ahead of the judging tour. Our award-winning Memorial Park is also looking wonderful with colourful floral displays – who wouldn’t want to visit our park when they drive past and see the magnificent floral troughs along the park entrance.

1st Keynsham Scouts’ Frome Troop have been helping to plant out the new wooden barrels outside Chandag and Holmoak shops, which will soon add a blaze of colour for traders and passers-by to enjoy. We are extremely grateful
have the necessary gardening skills how easy it is to transform a grey landscape or their front gardens. The project will also help to promote pride in the local community, as well as improving the quality of life for all residents and visitors to the area. As well as reducing anti-social behaviour and helping make the area a safer and more welcoming place it brings the community together through gardening activities. Over time it is hoped the project will encourage more residents to take part in the Keynsham in Bloom garden competition. We have been encouraged by the response from traders, who have welcomed the idea of enhancing the shop fronts.

Scouts from Frome Troop join Councillor Lisa O’Brien to plant flowers outside Holmoak Road shops to Councillor Lisa O Brien, who through her Ward Councillor Initiative, funded the planters at Holmoak. We welcomed Councillor O’Brien along to our event, where she joined in the fun with the Scouts, helping them with the planting up. Councillor O’Brien said: “I funded these colourful planters to create a more welcoming environment for our residents and visitors to the area. It’s a demonstration of how easy it is to green up and transform a grey landscape and, I believe, also
encourages pride in our local community.” Both schemes are a continuation of the RHS Greening Grey Britain campaign. This project was first piloted outside Queens Road shops and has been acknowledged as a great success both by the traders and community. We want to duplicate the success and roll out the scheme to Chandag and Holmoak. It’s hoped that the project will also help to demonstrate to those who might not feel that they
For the first time we had a Bloom stall at the festival. It must have been one of the hottest events we have attended this year but despite the soaring temperatures, many people still made the effort to come along and join in the fun in the Memorial Park. Our make-and-do activities proved to be a hit for both the youngsters and mums and dads alike. Children were queuing up to make and paint bug and butterfly houses. We even had some who could multi-task and paint in one hand, while enjoying an ice cream in the other! I’m sure the bugs and butterflies will soon enjoy settling into their new homes. Free bee-friendly wildflower seeds were also on offer.

The Great Bike Trail
B&NES Council vice chair Cherry Beath visits Keynsham Station where volunteers were hard at work on the community garden and other organisations to help make a difference to a community project. Keynsham in Bloom put forward the community garden as a challenge and were fortunate to have it accepted. We would like to thank Ian Reynolds from
B&NES and his team, who put so much effort into transforming the garden area, you all did a great job. We are all looking forward to seeing it in its full glory. Thanks also to Sara Dixon, B&NES locality manager, who coordinates the challenge events.
So we now have more than 72 floral bikes spread across Keynsham. Trail maps have sold out several times, as so many people are keen to join the fun and follow the bike trail around town. There has even been talk of a ladies’ cycle group joining in and cycling around to spot the bikes. We have also had interest from several walking for health groups, keen to take on the challenge of finding the bikes.

LETTERS Walk or cycle and beat town’s traffic
In response to last month’s letter from Barry Burston regarding the new one-way system, though I understand Mr Burston’s frustration with traffic jams I think expecting an easy journey
in the rush hour in Keynsham is akin to going out in the rain without an umbrella and expecting to remain dry. I do not know his personal circumstances but, for all who are fit and able, I would encourage them to walk or cycle the distance that he described of less than 0.75 miles. I have been shopping for several years using my bike and have never had a problem with traffic jams. J Edwards

fter the election I had hoped to return to writing about the wonderful local events that take place in North East Somerset and the strength of our
village and town communities. I went with my family to the Saltford Festival where I fear there may be pictures of me dancing with the Farandole Group of which I am proud to be patron, and to the Queen Charlton Fete. I missed the Peasedown Party in the Park which was once again a great success. All those involved deserve thanks for their community spirit and for giving enjoyment to others at a cost to themselves. Unfortunately, so many terrible events have been piling up that those must take the focus
of our attention. The awful and preventable disaster at Grenfell Tower in London demands a political response. It was an avoidable disaster and that it could happen in so developed a country shames our nation. That it hit the poorest in the land makes it all the more poignant. The answers to the terrorist threat are harder to find, evil stalks the land and one act begets another. This is both from copycats and from deranged people who hold general grudges against society and seek out the innocent
to kill and maim as a cover for their own inadequacies. The security services will play their part in limiting this but society needs as a whole to seek out the risks, report them and reaffirm our values against those of extremists wherever they come from. As each event passes into history we must not forget those who mourn and we must improve to lessen the possibility of repeats. Not all atrocities can be stopped and natural disasters are out of our control, nonetheless we must do better.

Slimmers bag up ‘before’ clothes for important cause Slimmers in Keynsham have raised thousands of pounds for charity as they’ve dropped dress sizes. Members of the town’s Slimming World groups have been donating the clothes they no longer wear as they’ve slimmed down to Cancer Research UK, collecting more than 200 bags as part of The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. Local firms, including Trigaci and Tooty Fruity, also donated raffle prizes to the cause, which added £130 to the groups’ total. Consultants Sharon and Kelly, who run the weekly groups in Keynsham, said it has been a great opportunity for people to say goodbye to their “before”
clothes. Sharon said: "The members never fail to amaze me with their weight loss results week after week and it has been great to see so many bags of clothes donated through The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. “This year’s Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect. Our groups are always buzzing and when we collected the bags up and saw what a phenomenal amount there was altogether, and we realised what a difference we could make, the atmosphere was just electric. “Lots of people don’t know

Wonder Woman scores win for extended DC universe
A
s a fan of comic-book adaptations I was left disappointed with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Both films supported a talented cast and terrific visual effects but neither quite understood what direction they were taking the franchise. The fourth instalment in this franchise, Wonder Woman (12A), lives up to the expectations set by generations of fans aching to see this character on the big screen. Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot as the titular character. This film was a wonder (no pun intended) to witness on screen as the beautiful direction and brilliant writing let it soar above its predecessors, taking its place as the best DC film since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. The film takes a fresh look at the origins of Diana Prince (Wonder Woman’s alter ego) and places the story in the midst of World War I, a “fish out of water” scenario that
expertly demonstrates Diana’s discovery of the world around her and her role as an icon of hope. Brilliant uplifting messages are supported by great performances (particularly by Chris Pine), a good story, excellent cinematography and the breathtaking visuals that we have come to expect from DC. However, nothing shines more than Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder
Woman as she perfectly captures the hope and strength that the character is known for, as well as the naivety and single-mindedness she shows after leaving her home world of Themyscira. Gadot carries the film with a performance that will leave the audience beaming and filled with a sense of optimism. The film does have shortcomings, however: the villain Ares leaves much to be desired with unclear motives and a performance that feels somewhat miscast, as well as some side characters whose roles feel underwhelming and unimportant to the overall flow of the narrative. In conclusion, Wonder Woman is a fantastic film that beautifully captures the spirit of the character and provides a thrilling war drama on the side. Many fans, including myself, look forward to seeing Gadot reprise her role in November’s Justice League. 4/5

n NEWS Hundreds raised for new cancer centre Hundreds of pounds has been raised for local cancer care thanks to generous donations in Keynsham. A bucket collection in the town last month raised £321.39 for the Forever Friends Appeal, which is supporting the Cancer Care Campaign at the RUH in Bath. The appeal aims to raise a minimum of £8.5 million towards a new cancer centre at the hospital, with £8 million already collected thanks to the community. A new fundraising group was launched by the appeal in Keynsham and Saltford last month and is the first set up to raise funds for different departments within the RUH, with interest already being shown in supporting dementia care at the hospital. Foodbank opens new centre to help more in food crisis
Keynsham Foodbank is to open a fourth centre to distribute food to meet rising demand from local people finding themselves in financial crisis. The organisation gave food parcels, made up of items donated by the public, to 749 people last year, up from 350 in 2015/16, with volunteers saying a growing number of clients are working people on low wages. The fourth distribution centre will open at Saltford Church Hall in Saltford High Street on July 7, where it will be staffed by volunteers led by Norman Osborne. It will open every Friday from 10.30am until noon and joins the foodbank’s other centres at Victoria Methodist Church Key Centre, The Link Community Hub in Bishop Sutton and St Francis Church Hall, Keynsham. Foodbank coordinator Alan Hale said: “The opening of this new distribution centre is to be celebrated in an odd way because what is demonstrated is the love and kindness that exists within the community to help those who are in food crisis or trying to balance too many commitments at that moment on a very restricted budget. It will also mean that our service to the community is improved. “Now that Bath & North East Somerset is fully transferred over to Universal Credit for the payment of benefits we are facing a much greater demand than we

Mr Hale added: “I would like to thank the Rev Daile Wilshere at St Mary’s Church, Saltford who raised this project with me and who has provided the venue and promoted it to the volunteers who have come forward.
“I would also like to thank Dawn Elliott, head teacher at Saltford CofE Primary School, who has given enthusiastic support to the project through the school and I am sure we will work positively together for the good of the community. “I would, of course, wish to give sincere thanks to everyone who donates food to us because it is the community that provides the food to feed those in crisis, we just provide the process.” Anyone who would like to donate food to Keynsham Foodbank will find collection boxes at Waitrose and Tesco in Keynsham, where there are also updated lists of the shopping items the team needs most.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY contemporaneous with it, although the site is on the edge of abbey’s deer park and ten minutes’ walk from the main complex. It has previously been suggested that the house was built for a Royal Steward, or Dappifer, who administered the Manor of Keynsham between 1539 and 1613. But again this seems too early for the building and the term dappifer seems to have fallen out of use by Tudor times. So, on the basis of probability, not evidence, it seems likely that the Dappifer’s House we have today is a replacement building that took both its site and its title from an older one that was part of the abbey establishment. We shall never know for sure!
What’s in a name? – Dapps Hill
At the south end of Temple Street, Keynsham, the road to Albert Mill and Steel Mills falls steeply down Dapps Hill. Adjacent, running past the houses, is Dapps Lane, which would have been the original course of the route down. “Dapps” is an unusual name, with no common meaning, but No 6 on Dapps Lane is a property today called “The Dappifer’s House” and it seems very likely that Dapps is a contraction of Dappifer’s. Looking into the meaning and origin of the word reveals several related definitions. The first is that a dappifer was “the servant who brings the meat to the table at a meal”. It was also the official title of the steward in a medieval English nobleman’s household and, thirdly, the most senior of the five great officers of state in the medieval French royal court. In medieval times, from 1170 onwards, Keynsham was centred on a single institution: Keynsham Abbey. The abbey owned the land and therefore controlled all the activities of the community, including agriculture and the mills. The Abbot was a powerful man both within and without the abbey precincts and would have been of high status, as well as being a man of God. The priests, properly called canons regular, who lived at the abbey, belonged to the order of the Victorines, which was based at the Abbey of St Victor near Paris,

Early in June, society members visited Mottisfont in Hampshire to discover a most interesting National Trust property that started life as a priory and went through several major re-buildings, so that the only signs of the original structure are visible in the cellars and a few cut-outs in more recent walls. The house has belonged to several families but the final owners, Maud and Gilbert Russell, who arrived in 1934, gave us the building we have today. They made Mottisfont the centre of a fashionable, artistic and political circle and under Maud’s guidance, rooms were reconfigured and redecorated, creating a neoclassical, luxurious look with some unique features. As well as the house, the rose gardens were well worth seeing and a stop at Marlborough for tea on the way back made for an enjoyable day.

Nomad by James Swallow For fans of I Am Pilgrim and Homeland comes an exciting thriller from James Swallow with a great hero in Marc Dane. He is an MI6 field agent who stays away from the action. However, when his team are subjected to a brutal attack Marc is the only survivor and, with the shocking realisation that there are traitors inside MI6, he’s forced to go on the run when he is blamed for the deaths. With nowhere to turn for help and no one left to trust, Marc meets up with the elusive Rubicon group and is forced to rely on their support and their operative Lucy Keyes. They make a cracking team as Lucy, who is ex-US Army, has all the fighting skills they need. They soon begin to realise that a terrorist attack is coming and, with the security establishment looking elsewhere, only Lucy and Marc can stop it before it's too late. This is an interesting, fast-paced read, travelling from Europe to the Middle East with lots of twists and turns along the way. Full of gadgets and an impressive drone sequence, Nomad ticks all the boxes for an exciting holiday read.

Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant I have always thought adventurers are from a different time, there is nothing new today. I was wrong: Levison Wood tries to create those new routes, new discoveries and new adventures that will make us dream of travelling. He has so far completed three journeys: walking the Nile, walking the Himalayas, and walking the Americas. In this book he decides to start at the source of the Nile and finish his journey at the Mediterranean sea. That's 4,250 miles on foot, with many different African countries to cross. Every single one brings new challenges to face. Between the wars, the thieves, the heat and the thirst, among other problems, every step brings him closer to his goal: to see the frontier of Egypt and the sea. Sometimes you can doubt his choices and wonder what is wrong with him, but it is probably why he is an adventurer and I am not! If you have no time to read the book, maybe you could watch his documentaries, which appeared on Channel 4. The book or the documentary are probably both best appreciated with a glass of icy, fresh lemonade in one hand.

Anyone with a few hours to spare per month can get involved, supporting the home library service by selecting and delivering books or helping at story times for under-fives and Baby Bounce and Rhyme sessions. Good neighbours Residents can help protect elderly and vulnerable neighbours as part of a new scheme launched by Avon and Somerset Police. The Nominated Neighbour initiative aims to prevent people falling victim to bogus callers, by redirecting any unknown callers to a trusted neighbour, who will then check their credentials. Inspector Julie Knight said: “We are urging people to reach out to elderly and vulnerable people in their communities and ask if they would like to sign up to this scheme and offer to be their ‘nominated neighbour’.”

Stuart honoured for 20 years of supporting fellow diabetics A Keynsham man’s dedication to helping hundreds of fellow diabetes sufferers has been recognised with a long service award. Stuart Walker, who has type 1 diabetes, has volunteered with Diabetes UK for 20 years and was recently honoured for his dedication at the charity’s regional Inspire Awards in Taunton. Stuart, 44, has carried a great deal of work with young people with diabetes, organising family care events, including weekends away, teaching at the events and offering advice on living with the condition. He also recruits and trains other volunteers as well as carrying out various other roles for the charity.
Stuart Walker supports others living with diabetes He said: “It is fantastic to receive this award for doing what I love. I started organising family events after attending a Diabetes UK care event myself. It helped me so much that I wanted to give something back. “Seeing the positive impact of helping young people come to terms with diabetes is incredibly rewarding. “On a recent event, for example, a young girl was able to inject herself with insulin for the
first time, after feeling unable to do so up to that point.” Annika Palmer, Diabetes UK South West regional head, said: “Organising care events is a huge job with immense responsibility, and the work he does is so valuable. Over the years he has helped hundreds of people with diabetes, giving them the opportunity to meet others, learn how to manage their condition and take part in exciting activities which create life-long happy memories. n NEWS A group of Keynsham crafters dropped into a local hospice to see how their handicrafts are helping the charity support terminally ill children. Members of the Keynsham Chicks have for many years been knitting tiny yellow chicks, which are then sold at a number of outlets at Easter alongside chocolate eggs. The money raised then goes to Children’s Hospice South West, whose Charlton Farm hospice near Bristol provides care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. This year, Chicks leader Mary George handed the baton to Margaret Thompson, who successfully organised the group’s efforts to knit more than 4,000 chicks. The woolly creatures were on sale at a number of local shops and garden centres, with the chocolate eggs provided by Tesco and the Keynsham Chicks themselves. The group raised a grand total of £3,666.90 for CHSW and they recently paid a visit to Charlton

What a busy month June has been for Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust, writes Kathy Farrell! A stand at the opening of the biennial Saltford Festival kicked off our engagement this month closely followed by our action-packed Festival of Nature weekend. A full auditorium of 110 people at The Space in Keynsham watched our film screening of A Plastic Ocean at the start of the festival weekend – we were all blown away by the cinematography but also concerned about our actions in this world, which are helping to destroy our marine environment, and ultimately us, in a big way. By 2050 there will be more weight of plastic in the ocean than fish – marine creatures of all sizes, plus many sea birds, ingest the plastic, mistaking it for food, which then kills them. BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group
marine life inspires us to make change problems the film showed many positive projects that are going on around the world, the development of new environmentally friendly plastics for everyday materials, and “plasma gasification” technology which if implemented could transform our waste products to create energy resources and other reusable non-toxic substances. There are many issues that can only be solved at a higher level with organisational changes by the big supermarkets and manufacturers. However, we can support campaigns such as “Message in a Bottle” by Surfers against Sewage (www.sas.org.uk/ campaign/message-in-a-bottle/) to encourage introduction of a deposit return system for plastic bottles and other singleuse containers. But the main emphasis that we all took away was how we could improve our own habits with just a little thought: l Always carry reusable bags for shopping, even down to net bags for fruit and vegetables – check
out “reusable produce bags” online. l Stop buying bottled water. Our tap water is perfectly safe in this country and we should take advantage of this. l Always carry a refillable bottle, preferably not plastic, as these can leach out harmful chemicals which we then take into our systems. Refilling a bottle locally is not difficult now as we have two outlets (plus a tap in the park) in Keynsham supporting the Refill campaign. There is even a downloadable app called “Refill” that gives locations and awards points for refilling your bottle. l Avoid using plastic drinking straws and cotton buds with plastic (not paper) sticks l Flushable wipes are not biodegradable – avoid use of these products and do not flush. l Recycle as much as possible through our waste collection services or at local amenity depots – never throw away plastic in a way that it could end up in our environment.

Marvellous Moths
On the night of June 17 a group of 18 gathered to investigate what moths could be discovered in the park. We set up a moth trap near Baked cafe (thanks to Salvatore for opening especially for us!) and waited for darkness to fall. Although the location was not perfect, we still managed 16 species of moth in and around the trap, many species of caddis flies plus a lucky sighting of a fox on its nightly circuit.
Festival of Nature
On Sunday, June 18, we joined other organisations for a sweltering day in the Memorial Park for Keynsham Festival of Nature. We welcomed many families exploring our local wildlife, both in our mini BioBlitz forays in the park and with our quizzes, and investigating our river dipping samples. On our stand “Match the Feather” and “Name the Moth” quizzes
proved popular, and it was great to catch up with so many people from the area and “talk nature”. Including some moths collected at our previous night's “Marvellous Moths” meeting we identified a total of 191 species of all varieties of flora and fauna, a great result! Our parks can be amazing places of biodiversity and a great way to investigate nature with the children. And it is an activity that can be carried out all year round – it is surprising what you might find if you turn over a leaf or a stone or look closely at a tree trunk. Thanks to everyone who supported us for the weekend, and to members of Wellsway Green team who helped in the park.

In partnership with The Independent General Practice, the South West’s largest private hospital has just launched a new five-day-a-week private GP service in Bristol to help meet the demands of patients who need swift access to appointments. It is well documented that there is a greater strain on the health sector with people living longer and populations rising. Therefore the demand on the NHS and GP surgeries in particular has seen an increased waiting time for appointments. A new study conducted by Pulse Magazine reveals the average waiting time for a routine GP appointment is 13 days and recent NHS figures conclude that two in three patients wait up to 15 minutes after their appointment time to be seen. The service at Spire Bristol will be delivered by The

It was The IGP’s goal to establish an independent private doctor’s surgery in Cardiff, which would offer an alternative healthcare solution to individual patients, families and businesses. Since its launch in 2004 they have had great success and opened new clinics in Cardiff Gate, Bridgend, Newport, Swansea and now a
five-day-a-week service here in the city of Bristol. The hospital’s business development manager, Sabiha Waraich, explains why such a service is important to Bristol families. “We’ve seen a higher demand for a private GP service, especially when there are national shortages of vaccinations on the NHS, with an example last year being the meningitis B vaccine.” The service at Spire Bristol Hospital will provide vaccinations in order to assist in the prevention of shingles and childhood conditions such as meningitis B, chickenpox and measles as well as providing immunisation for individuals prior to travelling abroad. “We are also noticing that more patients are willing to pay for their own appointment in order to be seen by a private doctor. We can offer appointments at times that are
convenient to the patient and we aim to see patients on the day that the inquiry is made. It’s perfect for people who live busy lives or families who cannot endure waiting two weeks to see their regular GP,” continues Sabiha. The private GP service is designed to complement your NHS service, and not replace it. With the patient’s consent it will regularly update NHS GPs with relevant information about patient care. Furthermore, it does not matter if you are not registered with an NHS GP. The service does, however, request that all new patients complete a health questionnaire and patient agreement form prior to their first consultation. OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome
K
eynsham Walkers are Welcome were involved in two walks during June. The first, on Sunday, June 11, attracted 24 participants, who met as usual at the Memorial Park cafe and then headed for Saltford. This walk coincided with the village’s excellent festival, and there were plenty for the group to explore in the three hours that we stayed – the flower display in the church, the the procession of vintage cars, tea on the Manor House lawns, and the music at the Bird in Hand, as well as the many stalls that lined the High Street. The event was so popular with our walkers that many stayed on, rather than heading back to Keynsham along the cycle path and River Avon. A hugely successful day that must be repeated next year. The second walk was part of the Festival of Nature, which was visiting Keynsham on Saturday, June 17. Because of the heat the numbers were down to 14. Once again setting off from the Memorial Park cafe, we headed along the
River Chew to Compton Dando. We were very fortunate to have as our guide John Aldridge from the Avon Wildlife Trust, who was able to point out an abundance of flora and fauna. Because of the heat, a couple of walkers had to abandon the outing and we arranged transport back to Keynsham with a couple of volunteers from Burnett, for which we thank them. The rest carried on through Burnett and back to Keynsham. Our thanks go to Dawn Drury

Bowls club to host memorable match to mark centenary Frys Bowling Club has what is expected to be a memorable match lined up to mark the club’s 100th anniversary – and spectators are more than welcome to watch the action. Tuesday, July 11, marks a special day for the club as it hosts the Somerset Bowls Association Executive for a game to celebrate its centenary year. The game will start at 2pm with the pre-game ceremony starting at around 1.45pm. Afterwards there will be speeches from officers of both Frys and Somerset and spectators are very welcome at Somerdale to watch. For anyone who would like to get out on the green themselves, on Saturday, July 8, the club is hosting an open day where people can give bowls a try between 2.30pm and 5pm. All equipment and tuition will be provided and, if possible, visitors are asked to wear flat-soled shoes. Fry’s began their cup campaign in the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy on May 23 at Imperial, claiming a 44-43 win on a challenging artificial pitch. This was followed by a second win a week later at home against BAC, 51-37, while a game against GB Britton at Somerdale on June 6 resulted in a loss for the home side.

Rain spoils some play but bowlers still busy Apart from Wednesday mornings when the green keeper has the right of way on the green at Keynsham Bowling Club, there is little free time as a whole range of matches are coming thick and fast, writes our correspondent. The ladies are playing their North Somerset League fixtures, together with a series of friendlies. They team up with the men on a Friday evening to play in the Somerset Mixed Triples League. Apart from a regular Wednesday friendly, the men field three teams in each of the Bristol and District League on a Thursday and the North Somerset League on a Saturday. In addition, both gents and
ladies are competing against each other in club events – the singles, pairs and triples. In recognition of the club celebrating its 60th anniversary, a mixed match against Somerset Patrons had been arranged at the start of June. Unfortunately the weather on the day was appalling, and by mid-morning the game had been cancelled to avoid unnecessary travelling. The cottage pie which had been prepared went into the freezer for another time! At the end of the month members will be enjoying a barbecue, probably swilled down by chardonnay and cider – not together. Playing bowls is hard work!
Calling all clubs and teams! League action has continued over recent weeks, too, with Frys recording losses against Avonmouth and Ardagh and victories over Long Ashton and Henleaze B, with the latter giving them their biggest win of the season at 72-25 on June 8. Last month also saw the first round of the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey Cup when Frys hosted St Anne’s Park on June 9. Club bowled over after two members called up to play on the national stage Jo Lau and Vincent O’Dornihan, of Wellsway Short Mat Bowling Club, have both been picked to play for the England Short Mat Bowling Team, writes our correspondent. Vincent has been bowling for many years both in Ireland and England and after winning a national competition was spotted and asked to trial for England. Jo has only been bowling for 18 months, and after a recent Avon Ladies v Cambridge Ladies County match, and a request by the English Short Mat Association president, Jo trialed for the England Ladies team and was successful. That’s another brilliant achievement for Wellsway Short Mat Bowling Club. Following on from our success at Wellsway School
England short mat bowlers Jo Lau and Vincent O’Dornihan Sports Centre, we now have another venue at the Scout Hut, Ashton Way, Keynsham. We are
looking for new members to join us in this fantastic but littleknown sport. So, anyone who
has a few hours to spare on a Thursday afternoon, from 1.15pm to 4.15pm, can come along and give it a go, a warm welcome awaits new bowlers of any age or gender with or without experience. Short mat bowling is an ideal sport for couples looking for an activity together. Equipment is provided and coaching available. The first 20 new members will be offered free membership. SPORT A race horse funded by a charity syndicate set up by cancer survivor Jenny Godwin has taken second place at Chepstow in his first outing. Bounty Pursuit, ridden by Jenny’s son Mitch on June 16, narrowly missed out on first place in his first run for the Racing for a Cause group and now hopes are high the duo will go one better on July 13 at Newbury. Jenny, from Bitton, cofounded the syndicate with Sharon Blake a couple of months ago to raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice and Dorothy House following her own battle with breast cancer. She said Bounty Pursuit had looked “incredible” in action at Chepstow, adding: “We already have enough members to cover our costs so every member that joins from now is going to make a real difference to the charities.” Bounty Pursuit is trained by
