Much-loved green space ‘lost’ in cuts to mowing Residents say long grass means field can’t be used Families in Keynsham say they have lost the use of a much-loved green space because the grass has been left uncut by the council. The field backing onto Teviot Road was once filled with people enjoying picnics and playing ball games, say residents, but now the space is empty – filled only with

grass that has been left to grow to around waist-height. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s grounds maintenance team has mowed around the edges of the field and cut a path across it to the basketball court every month since April but the rest has been left untended.

Resident Beth Barnes-Watts, a mother of three, said it had not only left people unable to use the field as they had in previous summers but had also sparked health concerns for local families. “One of my five-year-old son’s friends developed hives after Turn to Page 2

‘There were always From Page 1 he’d been in the long grass and there could even be ticks,” she said. “I have also been suffering with hayfever this year, as have some of our neighbours. Nature reserves are great – but not when you’re living in one. “Another issue is that you can’t see the dog mess in the grass. We have been told to report it to the council’s Cleansing Service but surely it is more cost-effective to just cut the grass than to send people out to clean up. “One of the attractions of this house was the field – I could watch the children playing from the window and there were always families having picnics. “We just want our space back. We were told it would be reviewed at the end of the year but people want to use it for summer.” The council says it maintains around 230 hectares of grassed areas, including parks, playing fields and verges, and the way they are being maintained has changed because cuts have left the Parks Team with fewer staff and because the council is creating wildflower meadows in parks to encourage wildlife. Under the new regime, parks are mowed every two weeks, playing fields and open spaces

every four to six weeks while residential verges will either be cut every four to six weeks or twice a year depending on an assessment by the council. A council spokesperson has told Keynshamvoice that a larger area of grass near the children’s play area will be cut in the coming weeks. They did not confirm whether the reduced grass-cutting at Teviot Road was because of cutbacks or for wildlife. Resident Gary Lloyd said he had lived near the field for 19 years and it was the first time it hadn’t been cut. “It was always busy with people playing football or rounders but nobody uses it now,” he added. Neighbour Rich Clark, a dad of two, said the grass had started to get “out of hand” earlier in the year leading residents to wonder when it would be cut. “We are very lucky to have this facility here which is used by so many people, not just the families who live nearby. “One day it’s supposed to be our village green as part of the new development so we will need it to be cut. “It’s always empty now and it’s such a shame.” A B&NES Council spokesperson issued a brief statement to Keynshamvoice

saying: “A wider area of land by the play area will be cut within the next two weeks and it will be maintained over the summer.” Meanwhile, Keynsham Town Council has issued an apology over the upkeep of some of the green spaces and footpaths it manages, such as the cemetery and Manor Road playing fields, as its grounds team has been hit by staff shortages. Council chairman Councillor Clive Fricker said: “The town council is aware that residents have expressed concern over recent weeks concerning the upkeep of green spaces and footpaths within Keynsham. While the town council is responsible for maintaining certain play areas and footpaths, together with Manor Road and the cemetery, the rest fall to either B&NES or other organisations with whom the town council is currently liaising about residents’ concerns. “The town council accepts

that specific green spaces – especially Manor Road and the cemetery – have not been kept to the usual high standard and would like to apologise for this. Our usual team of four grounds maintenance staff has been reduced to two over the last six weeks owing to sickness and a vacancy and certain areas such as play areas have to take priority over others for health and safety reasons. “The council is also very aware that the cemetery is an extremely sensitive area and that its condition is of prime importance. Apologies have been issued to any families affected and outside contractors have been deployed to help restore the cemetery to its normal high standard.” At their June meeting, town councillors also agreed that urgent repairs to the cemetery chapel spire should go ahead, with a maximum estimated cost of £7,700.

n NEWS Concerns raised as village store to close McColl’s in Saltford will be closing its doors on August 5, the retailer has announced. The company had “explored all options” for the Bath Road store, a spokesperson said, adding: “Regretfully we have taken the difficult decision to cease trading at the McColl’s store on Bath Road in Saltford. The store’s last day of trading will be August 5, 2018. We are saddened to no longer be operating the store and our priority has been to support all affected colleagues.” The news has raised concerns within the community. Saltford parish councillor Duncan Hounsell said: “The writing was on the wall when McColl’s pulled out of taking on the post office. Residents are already concerned at the number of empty shops in Saltford’s main shopping arcade. Hopefully that situation will be temporary. With McColl’s going, we could be faced with losing the only cashpoint machine in Saltford.”

‘Community toilet’ proposal is rejected after council vote A bid to introduce a “community toilet” scheme in Keynsham with council backing has been rejected by town councillors. The proposal, which could see local businesses allowing members of the public to use their toilets for free, was put forward to Keynsham Town Council by Councillor Hal MacFie on Tuesday, June 12. He said successful schemes had been launched in towns such as Frome and would make Keynsham a more welcoming place. A report by town council clerk Cheryl Scott for councillors, however, said successful schemes paid participating businesses annual fees of up to £1,000 each per year and issues could arise over insurance or legal fees as well as complying with equality and health and safety laws. The report also added that

implementing the scheme and monitoring facilities was not in the current job description of any council staff and the authority would have to explore working with B&NES, which had experience of running public toilets. Councillors subsequently voted to reject Cllr MacFie’s motion and agreed that the council would not consider any new projects for the next six months to avoid adding to staff’s workload, a move that councillors had already endorsed at a previous meeting. Councillors also voted against a proposal to allow a member of the public to speak on the scheme. Following the vote, Cllr MacFie said: “It is disappointing that the town council was not willing to go ahead with this simple, low-cost, low-risk proposal that would benefit

Keynsham residents directly.” He added that he would take the proposal to Keynsham Business Forum and would be asking the town council to publish details of its programme of projects. Following the meeting, town council chair Councillor Clive Fricker said in a statement: “As an employer with a statutory duty of care to our employees there is now a genuine concern that any new initiatives undertaken at this time would create unacceptable pressures on our staff and compromise the delivery of activities already under way. Therefore as a collective body we decided not to approve any further initiatives for the next six months.” His statement is published in full on the Letters page on Page 20.

Groups’ work helps celebrate gardening as a community at famous flower show

Gardening features made by community groups in Keynsham will be seen by thousands of visitors at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this month. A scarecrow made by members of Keynsham Plastic Re-Action and an eel made from plastic bottle tops by pupils from St Keyna Primary School will be on display at the event in London as part of the RHS Growing Community Garden exhibit. The garden is the work of award-winning designer Jon Wheatley, who is based in the Chew Valley, and aims to celebrate the way neighbourhood gardening brings together people of all ages and from all walks of life. Denise James, chair of Keynsham in Bloom, has worked alongside Jon on a number of his show gardens, for which he has won multiple RHS gold medals, and is joining him on the Community Garden build. The garden focuses on four themes – climate change, food, wildlife and wellbeing – and features fruit and veg, flowers for cutting and a polytunnel, as well as a community shop and meeting space. There is also an urban forest, plenty of plants for pollinators, a display looking at worms and their role in soil health and many ideas

An artist’s impression of how the finished Growing Community Garden will look at Hampton Court Palace to encourage people to recycle, including finding new ways to reuse plastics. Taking this as their focus, Keynsham Plastic Re-Action group have created a scarecrow called Plastic Pete for the show garden, made using a chicken wire frame that has then been stuffed with a range of waste plastic such as food wrapping, straws, polystyrene packing chips and bottles. Plastic Pete will be joined by Emeelia, an eel-shaped mosaic made from plastic bottle tops created by youngsters from St Keyna Primary School’s Green Team and Gardening Club with help from Community at 67 volunteers. There will also be flowers made from plastic bags and bottles, while members of

Keynsham and District Mencap Society are decorating bikes left over from last year’s Keynsham in Bloom bike trail to create a hedge for the garden. Jon, who is chairman of RHS South West in Bloom, said: “The garden is about happy, healthy horticulture – focusing on the value that gardening brings to individuals and communities.”

He added: “We will show examples of how everyday materials can be recycled and made to look attractive in community gardens.” The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show runs from July 2 to 8, with full details and tickets available from www.rhs. org.uk

How can I take care of my dog at the beach?

A

day at the beach is a great opportunity to have some fun with your dog and, thankfully, there are plenty of dogfriendly beaches in the South West for us all to enjoy! Plan your perfect family day out with these top tips for visiting the beach. Beach restrictions Before you load up the car and head off to the seaside, check to see if there are any restrictions for allowing dogs on the beach. Sometimes during the busy summer months, popular locations do not allow dogs; however, there are usually areas of a beach cordoned off for dogs or smaller nearby dog-friendly beaches to enjoy. You can usually check online to see what restrictions apply or visit www.thebeachguide. co.uk/dog-friendly for some ideas. Swimming Dogs are usually a lot more willing to brave the chilly British waters than us, but make sure the sea is safe enough for your dog to swim. Tides and currents can be very strong and although dogs instinctively know to paddle, you may discover that they are not expert swimmers! Remember to rinse the sea water from your dog after swimming as the salt may irritate their skin when dry.

Keep them safe Be sure to provide them with plenty of shade and fresh water throughout the day. It may also be worth bringing toys to distract them from picking up beach debris or seaweed that could be toxic to your dog. It’s better to be safe than sorry, after all! Pick it up Don’t ruin it for other owners and make sure you pick up after your dog. If it is a dog-friendly beach, there will probably be plenty of bins around for you to dispose of your poo bags. If you don’t abide by the rules, then it may influence a future decision to no longer allow dogs on that beach.

Keynsham artists’ owl joins rest of the flock for trail The latest creation by a group of Keynsham artists has flown the nest to join a major sculpture trail in Bath this year. Members of Keynsham ArtSpace have unveiled an owl decorated in a mixture of styles, which will now be joining more than 80 others as part of the Minerva Owls of Bath event. “Emma – the Community Rail Owl” will be on show in Brunel Square outside Bath Spa Station until September 10. The group’s design was selected by Great Western Railway, which is sponsoring the sculpture. ArtSpace chair Zoe Wilkins said the group was inspired by the 50th anniversary

of the Great Flood in Keynsham and added: “The design also reflects the fragility and the beauty of the planet.” Working at the Chocolate Quarter’s arts studio, the artists – Les Benson, Louisa Coote, Jude Cron, Ann Gavahan, Allen Richards, Jemma Davies, Joe Tymkow and Sophie Galliers – took three weeks to complete the project, which features paint, textiles, dichroic glass, mosaics and ammonites for eyes. Residents and visitors to Bath now have the summer to spot the Minerva Owls, which are located around the city as well as neighbouring towns such as Newton St Loe, Bradford-on-

Wombles founder Erica is named national ‘Litter Hero’ Photo: Now And For Always Photography

The founder of Keynsham’s volunteer litter-picking force, the Keynsham Wombles, has been made a “Litter Heroes ambassador” in recognition of her work by national organisation Keep Britain Tidy. Erica Davies, who set up the Wombles in 2012 by encouraging people to keep their own small patches of the town clear of litter as well as joining in bigger group litter picks, was presented with the award on Saturday, June 23, at a ceremony in London. The ambassador scheme aims to celebrate 100 people across the country who go above and beyond to care for their environment as well as their neighbours’ and to offer them support as they inspire others to take action. Erica said she was delighted to receive the honour for her work with the Wombles and the group’s #NoPlaceForLitter campaign and said back in 2012 she couldn’t have imagined how the project would grow. “What really took me by surprise was the incredible sense of community which we generated by working together

11

towards a common goal,” she said.“Our project has developed over the years, and we now spend as much time trying to prevent the formation of litter, whether that is with school assemblies, messaging about securing recycling box lids in windy weather, or our brand new hand-painted ashtrays with wildlife messages, trying to reinforce the connection between the litter we create and the animals we share our com-

What we do know is that litter is not solved only by individuals litter picking – brilliant as that is – but by whole communities working together.” The Wombles’ #NoPlaceForLitter campaign aims to provide a means for local litter-picking groups to communicate with each other and find solutions. They hope to set up more groups within the Bath and North East Somerset area and eventually

see the project go national. The latest initiative that will catch people’s eyes in Keynsham is the hand-painted ashtrays appearing outside pubs and cafes in the town, which carry messages asking people to protect wildlife by disposing of their cigarette butts in the ashtrays. They were produced by members of Banwell Pottery, which provides work experience and training to people with learning disabilities.

A Keynsham fitness class had a ball as they were put through their paces by a former star of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing. Professional dancer Natalie Lowe joined Fitsteps instructor Amy Vickery at Wellsway Sports Centre to host a masterclass in the ballroom-inspired exercise routines. Sixty people aged from 20 to 81 attended the session, which saw Natalie teach the group basic posture, the key steps from both ballroom and Latin and demonstrate how to get the best from the workout, before leading a Fitsteps class in the second half of the session. Amy said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the masterclass and the feedback I've received has been brilliant. They all commented on how lovely and genuine Natalie Lowe is. She has such a passion for dance and wants as

many people as possible to share that passion and enjoy dance like she does and gain fitness and health benefits while doing so. “Having Natalie visit also reignited my passion and I couldn’t wait to get back to my own Fitsteps classes and pass on the knowledge I’d learned from her and help everyone ‘dance themselves fit’.” Natalie co-created Fitsteps and Fitsteps FAB (For All Bodies – for less active participants) with fellow Strictly pro Ian Waite and former Olympic swimmer Mark Foster and is currently touring the UK to host masterclasses. A Keynsham school is calling on former students to pick up uncollected exam certificates after an office clear-out uncovered dozens of documents. Broadlands Academy students who left between 2006 and 2017 who don’t have their certificates are being urged to get in touch and collect them by 1.25pm on Friday, July 20. School staff have been clearing out the exams office in the wake of new GDPR regulations. Exam rules mean schools only need to keep certificates for one year, a policy Broadlands will be following in future. Many employers insist on seeing original exam certificates, said the school, and without them former students would have to contact exam boards. Former pupils can contact Broadlands Academy’s reception on 0117 986 4791 to check if the school has their certificates and to arrange a convenient collection time.

Memorial to Great Flood to be unveiled, 50 years to the day after tragedy struck Relatives of those who lost their lives in the Great Flood of 1968 will be among the guests attending the unveiling of a permanent memorial to the events of 50 years ago in Keynsham. The historic County Bridge stone, part of the bridge swept away as the flood waters reached Keynsham on July 10, 1968, is being re-sited in the Memorial Park, complete with a commemorative plaque. The memorial will be unveiled by the chair of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Councillor Karen Walker, on July 10 at 2pm, in front of residents who experienced the floods, rescuers and people who have donated towards the project. Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, Keynsham Town Council and B&NES Council have worked together on the

project, with the town council providing funding of £2,000 and a community grant to the history society of £1,000. Dr Cheryl Scott, town clerk, said: “Fifty years ago, a number of people lost their lives owing to a serious flash flooding event in the Chew catchment area, including three people in Keynsham. “The number of lives lost could have been more were it not for the bravery of the rescuers. Property was destroyed, lives and homes were disrupted and a huge clean-up effort ensued. “This unveiling ceremony is one of a series of events being held within the catchment area to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this tragic natural disaster. The town council hopes that while enjoying the events, residents will also take a moment to respectfully reflect on the

The booklet is on sale for £2.50, with all proceeds going towards the final £1,000 that needs to be raised to cover the cost of the memorial project. Society chairman Richard Dyson said: “While everyone who lived in the area at the time will never forget that night, there are many who are either too young or have moved here since then. This booklet will give them an idea of what happened and the huge impact it had on the town.” The booklet is available from the society on 0117 986 4453 or by emailing info@keysalthist. org.uk or from Keynsham Town Council’s offices at 15-17 Temple Street.

Film review with Harrison Thorne

After production issues, does Solo succeed? After months of delays, director changes and emergency acting coaches, Solo: A Star Wars Story is finally released, following Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) during his younger years leading up to the 1977 classic film. Defying all expectations, Ehrenreich does a good job in capturing the essence of the beloved hero without resorting to a poor Harrison Ford impression. He commands the role with skill and gives a performance that will satisfy generations of fans. Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian brings a charming and exotic performance to the screen, which would make Billy Dee Williams proud. The narrative is simple, following a younger Han Solo becoming the gruff smuggler that fans know and love. The story sticks a little too closely to predictability and simplicity which is, to its benefit, a refreshing change of pace from the exciting, complex story of December’s The Last Jedi. However,

I would’ve liked to have seen some more creative narrative decisions. The visuals are, as they have been for years now, superb, blending practical effects and CGI seamlessly. However, the cinematography seems oddly stale compared to the past few entries and the lighting sometimes makes some scenes appear grainy or blurry. The soundtrack, orchestrated by John Powell, is excellent with exciting main themes, plenty of motifs and some familiar classics reaching some of the highs that John Williams made so famous, proving that other composers can successfully take up the reins after Williams’ retirement. In conclusion Solo: A Star Wars Story mostly overcomes the struggles that it went through in development and delivers a fun, standalone story full of excellent performances, a brilliant soundtrack and interesting and diverse characters.  3.5/5

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

T

his month sees the Keynsham Music Festival, a week-long music event cumulating in the outdoor festival in Keynsham Memorial Park on July 1. The various performances over the week are visited by more than 10,000 people. The policing challenges for this are minimal until the performances in the park on the Sunday. The good weather brings with it the crowds, which is great for this event. Please remember that we will be in attendance at this event supporting the organisers and dealing with any anti-social behaviour or offences that occur.

n The anti-social behaviour in Keynsham continues to decline from the spike that we had earlier in the year, which is good news. We are actively targeting our most prolific offenders and patrolling the ASB hotspots. One of the most prevalent locations was Market Walk, close to the library, where we have identified two offenders and issued them with Acceptable Behaviour Contracts and banned them from the area. If you have any information on anti-social behaviour, whether it be locations or persons involved, then please make contact with us via the beat pages of the Avon and Somerset website. n We are just finishing our crime and consequences talks at the local schools. We have a large amount of interaction with our schools and this week my colleagues and I have been talking to Year 9 pupils. These presentations focus on anti-social behaviour, drugs and knife crime.

This month a serious accident occurred on Charlton Road where speed and inexperience were a factor. Three people suffered serious injuries during this incident, which could have so easily been fatal

We also take an overview of the more serious offences that occur in schools and offer support and deal with them if necessary. n Our positive results from drugs warrants continue as we have executed a warrant this month in Keynsham. We look to work with our partner agencies and, following this warrant, the housing agency that owns the property has evicted the tenant. We regularly

share information with our partner agencies and this helps us to deal promptly with issues. n Nuisance vehicles continue to blight Keynsham. We are actively looking to target offenders who have heavily modified their vehicles and tuned them to backfire while being driven. We again are looking to deal with this and are using our powers under the Police Reform Act to warn drivers and seize the vehicles of repeat offenders. n Part of our job in the beat office is to respond to 999 calls that take us away from our primary role. This month a serious accident occurred in Charlton Road where speed and inexperience were a factor. Three people suffered serious injuries during this incident, which could have so easily been fatal. The offending driver will be dealt with for all of the offences that are identified but I hope this serves as a reminder to drive within the speed limits.

Collectors out and about for Lifeboats

Celebrating 40 years of fun,

Shoppers in Keynsham will be able to show their support for a charity dedicated to saving lives at sea this month. The Keynsham Branch of the RNLI (Lifeboats) will be holding its annual street collection on Saturday, July 14, with collectors in the High Street and outside Chandag Road shops. The street collection replaces to house-tohouse collections. A spokesperson said: “We rely on the general public to be generous in their support of the RNLI, which is a totally independent charity dedicated to saving lives on the sea, and now ever increasingly on the coastal beaches of this country. The documentary series on BBC 1 earlier in the year showed the skilled and often extremely dangerous rescues that the lifeboat men and women are called upon to make, often in horrendous circumstances.” Anyone who would like to help with the collection can call Julian Hannam on 0117 986 3726.

More than 300 people joined a day of celebration at Keynsham Rugby Club to mark 40 years since the launch of Keynsham and District Mencap Society. Members past and present mingled with supporters, volunteers, family and friends – as well as special guest Karen Walker, the chair of Bath and North East Somerset Council – on June 16 to enjoy music from Daz’s Rock 4 Charity, DJ Barry, Better Than Expected and the society’s own Music Man project, making their debut performance just 10 weeks after the group formed. There were also rides from Chuffy the Train, a bouncy castle, face painting, a barbecue and a bar to entertain the crowds and keep everyone well fed. The occasion also provided the perfect opportunity for the Keynsham charity to launch its Future Foundations building appeal, a drive to raise £250,000 by the end of 2019 to allow the

friendship and vital support

Members of the Music Man project gave their first performance just weeks after the group’s launch white and blue for the society’s recent royal wedding fete and could be seen at the anniversary bash sporting pink and green, the Mencap colours. Lisa O’Brien added: “It was wonderful to see so many members, their families, volunteers old and new, founder

members and supporters come together to celebrate this milestone in our society’s history. “Over 40 years hundreds of children and adults have found friendship, fun and support with us. As we move forward towards our 50th, we will aim to develop increased opportunities

and initiatives to promote the wellbeing of those with learning difficulties generally. “With a feisty performance from our Music Man project after only ten sessions, we demonstrated and took pride in the potential that our members with good support can achieve.

“I am proud to be a part of this fantastic organisation.” Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s next event is a sponsored bike ride, walk or wheelchair push on Saturday, September 16, starting from the Bird in Hand pub and heading off along the Bristol-Bath cycle track. he final weeks leading up to our South West in Bloom judging in July are the busiest and it’s when our volunteers are the most active. We have been out and about planting up tubs at Holmoak, Chandag and the railway station ready for July 13.

Bloom volunteers at Chandag shops; right, one of the hanging baskets

In addition, this year we decided that we would plant up our own hanging baskets, which was a huge challenge for us. With some guidance from Jane Wheatley, two of our volunteers, Belinda and Jeanette, and myself spent a very sunny morning in an incredibly hot polytunnel planting up our hanging baskets – 26 in total. We’re rather pleased with our efforts and hope that they will help to enhance our High Street. The baskets were a huge challenge for us this year to take on, but given the high costs quoted to us we had to make the decision one way or another. The railway station has again seen several contractors working on site, with some disruption to the community garden. We have decided to press ahead and include the station as part of our main judging tour regardless. We feel that we can demonstrate to the judges that we have tried to overcome site difficulties. Don’t forget to come along and cheer on our prize winners, who will be presented with their certificates and prizes at Keynsham Farmers’ Market on Saturday, July 14. Prize-giving starts at 11am. We had a very difficult task in selecting the prize winners, the standard was extremely high. Altogether we had 32 infant and 44 junior entries.

Poppy Cascade

Helpers hard at work on the Poppy Cascade Partnership is working with us and we are confident that the garden area will be up to the required judging standard.

Scarecrow Trail

We can’t wait for our scarecrow trail to start on July 9 – some have already been popping up

we’ve heard there are some real characters appearing around town. There are 36 characters in total – you will be able to find them by purchasing a 20p trail map from Keynsham Town Council’s offices in Temple Street. Details of the locations and characters will help guide you around the trail.

Live In Care

The response to our call for knitters for our poppy cascade has been fantastic – at the last count we had 8,135 poppies. The cascade is beginning to come together; a number of volunteers came to the first of our workshops, held at the Keynsham Royal British Legion. Our next workshop will be held at the Legion on Wednesday, July 11, from 9.30am to 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come and help put the cascade together, even if you can only spare 30 minutes or so. Every extra pair of hands helps!

Bottle-top Art

We had a great response to our bottle-top art workshop at the Children’s Action Day event, which was co-ordinated by Keynsham Town Council and Bath Area Play Project. The youngsters had a great time putting together the first of our bottle-top fish. On a final note, I would personally like to thank our volunteers who have given up their evenings to help with the planting – Belinda, Cath, Celia, Dawn, Linda, Jeanette, Mary, Raul and not forgetting volunteers from Community at 67. If anyone would like to adopt a planter and help to look after it, with just a little deadheading and watering, please let us know. Also if any traders on the High Street would like to adopt one of our planters, please do get in touch. We are on Facebook at www.facebook. com/keynshaminbloom/

LETTERS Council has duty of care to employees Thank you for your invitation to comment on Keynsham Town Council’s decision not to approve any further new initiatives for six months. When the town council makes decisions about matters important to Keynsham residents, it is the town council staff that have to research and advise of the possible legislative/practical implications for the council before it makes a decision and subsequently implement those decisions. As a public authority, the town council has to demonstrate it has complied with the considerable amount of legislation that is required as part of its decision-making processes. We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated, competent and loyal team of staff who already willingly work over and above their contracted hours to deliver all the activities, services and projects that the town council

currently undertakes. As well as the daily administration of council services, committee meetings and dealing with increasing numbers of residents’ inquiries, there are events to organise, capital projects such as the cemetery to progress, repairs, maintenance and upkeep to our facilities (including in response to vandalism) and Youth Service provision. Additionally our principle officers, the town clerk and deputy town clerk, are responsible for implementing all health and safety, employment and other legislative compliance on behalf of the town council including the new General Data Protection Regulation. As an employer with statutory duty of care to our employees there is now a genuine concern that any new initiatives undertaken at this time would create unacceptable pressures on our staff and compromise the delivery of activities already under way. Therefore as a collective body we decided not to approve any further initiatives for the next six months. All normal communication with Keynsham residents remains the same and our strategy does not preclude

One-way system is causing daily chaos I am amazed, to the point of disbelief, at the reported results of the traffic survey in Issue 75. I have lived in Keynsham for almost 30 years and have never experienced the chaos we now endure from the introduction of this road system. Every day the traffic flow in the Bath Hill/Wellsway area is severely restricted, often to the point of standstill. I (and my wife) do not know anyone who took part in this survey or indeed anyone who was asked to partake in the survey or even the existence and timescale of a survey. Those we have spoken to agree that the system is a disaster for the town and,

23

without exception, all disagree with the reported survey results. It is evident that local businesses are not too pleased either. If we want a true answer (and not one the council wants) then why not invite all households for their opinions and have a more honest representative answer from residents. How many residents knew of this survey or its timing? Perhaps it is time to conduct a more inclusive and fair survey. The fact that footfall and trade figures have dropped in the town are surely not a coincidence but stem from this daily chaos. Mel Harper

Thanks for coming to my father’s aid I would like to thank a lady called Alice and an unnamed gentleman who helped my father when he fell near Tesco in the early hours of Friday, June 8. He is now fine, with a small bump on his forehead and feeling a little bit shaken. Between them, his two helpers got him back on his feet and back home, and Alice reported his fall through Careline. Thank you both. Marie Walters

Triple challenge for Ellie as she raises money for Mind A Keynsham student has tackled a series of daunting – but exciting – challenges in a bid to help break down some of the barriers surrounding mental health issues. Wellsway School pupil Ellie Burston has done a 150ft bungee jump, a 25-metre abseil and on June 23 completed a 5km Colour Run at Bath Racecourse all with the aim of raising money and awareness for Mind, the mental health charity. The 15-year-old has now collected £1,300 over her threemonth challenge, which she hopes will help Mind to run its helplines and support groups for the people who need them. She said: “I wanted not only to raise money for Mind but also to raise awareness of mental health. There are so many negative stigmas attached and

Ellie Burston at the Colour Run they can affect people and their perspective on mental illness. “Mental health problems are so common now, I have noticed especially in people my age. I have close friends and family members who have struggled recently so I wanted to do something to show my support to them and anyone else who

feels like they are alone. I hope to have raised awareness to show that mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of.” Ellie said despite being quite active and taking part in sports, the challenges were all very new to her. She said: “I have never done any activities like these before, apart from a six-metre abseil at Year 6 camp, so it was all a very new – and scary – yet exciting experience. I am very active, particularly with horse riding and football, but I have to say that jumping my horse isn’t anything quite like a bungee jump!” Ellie has thanked everyone who has supported her at her events and donated money – anyone who would like to add to her fundraising total can go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ellie-burston

Rotary club happy to help provide fun

Liam Wyatt and Ross Scott from Hodgepodge Theatre performing in Be Happy, Harry Hippo, which is coming to The Space

Celebrated children’s show offers ultimate pick-me-up! An award-winning play that tackles childhood depression will be raising smiles among local families when it comes to Keynsham this month. Hodgepodge Theatre is bringing Be Happy, Harry Hippo to The Space on Saturday, July 7, following its successful debut in April at the Swindon Fringe Festival, where it picked up the award for Best Kids’ Show. The production features puppetry, physical theatre and comedy and explores the growing issue of childhood depression while offering families, teachers and children ways to both recognise and assist a child struggling

with the condition. The show, which is suitable for children aged three and up, is performed by Trowbridge-based actor Liam Wyatt and Frome-based actor Ross Scott, who was the winner of the 2017 Rose Bowl award in the Best Actor category.

Harry Hippo has lost his smile and can’t seem to get it back so the show offers the ultimate pickme-up, taking him on a journey to remember all the things that make him truly happy. Bath-based Hodgepodge Theatre formed in 2016 and specialises in making difficult subjects accessible for families via puppetry and theatre. Previous shows include The Homeless Panda and Reindeer on the Roof! Be Happy, Harry Hippo is at The Space on July 7 from 11am to noon and tickets, priced £6, are available from www.ticketsource. co.uk/date/480537

Members of Keynsham Rotary Club stepped in to help organise fun and games at Chandag Junior School’s summer fete in June. The club ran three stalls at the event, including Splat the Rat, the coconut shy and the ping pong jars game. The sun was out and business was brisk, with many youngsters earning a prize for “splatting” the rat and one crack shot winning himself four coconuts at the shy. A spokesperson for the club said they hoped the event raised a good sum for the school and added: “Club members are pleased to be invited to help with such events, which we view as part of our community support activities.” The club has also just launched its Young Citizen of the Year Award, which gives younsters aged from 10 to 18 the chance to win a Rotary GB and Ireland national award of £500. Applications are invited from youngsters living in Keynsham or Saltford and full details and application form can be found online at keynshamrotary.org under “Events”.

Join ‘play afternoon’ Families are invited to spend a fun afternoon exploring the Early Years facilities on offer at Saltford CofE Primary School. School friends to go the extra mile – or 10 – to support Guide Dogs charity Six school friends from Keynsham will be setting off on a 10-mile walk to help more puppies complete their journeys to become fully fledged guide dogs. Using an Ordnance Survey map, Emily, Ava, Finnlay, Harrison, Jonathon and Chase, who all attend Chandag Junior School, have drawn up a route for their challenge that will take them to Pensford and back along trails, footpaths and roads. The group of 10-year-olds will be accompanied on Friday, June 29, by parents and teacher Helen Muncer and have been out walking in preparation for their challenge, as well as taking part in sports and activities at school. After deciding they wanted to raise money for a charity, the

group chose Guide Dogs UK after meeting puppies in training at a number of local events. They have been sent T-shirts and sponsorship forms by the charity and on Wednesday, June 20, welcomed David Nash from Guide Dogs and puppy in training Joker to a school assembly to hear more about the organisation’s work. The youngsters have been busy collecting sponsorship from family and friends and will be setting off on their 10-mile challenge at 9.15am and hope to be back in time for lunch. Chandag Junior School pupils Emily, Ava, Finnlay, Harrison, Jonathon and Chase with David Nash from Guide Dogs UK, eight-month-old Joker and head teacher Tim Dunning

n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Colourful conclusion to our jamboree

T

he recent Wansdyke District Scout Jamboree came to an end with a colour run. As you can see it was certainly a colourful affair and enjoyed by all ages. A huge thank you to all leaders and parents who helped to bring this event to our young people and to Somerdale Pavilion for providing their facilities as the venue – it was much appreciated.

Golfers drive to success

The Scout Charity Golf Day 2018 was a resounding success with more than £5,000 raised towards the purchase of a minibus for Keynsham Scouts. We are deeply grateful to Stockwood Golf Club for hosting the charity day. This year’s event was the largest ever with nearly 30 teams taking part. Thanks to local main sponsors IJ McGill Transport, Key Property Lawyers and Clarkson’s Independent Funeral Directors there were a range of great prizes up for grabs, including the chance to win £10,000 for a hole in one. Thanks to the support of the players, the golf club and the sponsors (both main and secondary), Scouting will be able to provide great opportunities for our young people and transport is often crucial to making it happen. Due to the success the search for a minibus can now be accelerated – watch out in the coming months for the bus to appear.

Happy days at campsite

Last month we announced that the campsite at Chelwood was 40 years old. That clearly brought memories flooding back as well as surprise that 40 years seemed to have flown by and that the sale of land, now Ashton Way car park,

Scouts from across the Wansdyke District ended the jamboree with a colour run was the reason for the site being purchased. We are now delighted to bring you a couple of pictures from early times and one from today, plus some memories we have received that sum up the value of the campsite to the young people in our community.

“I remember getting milk from the dairy over the road – cold and creamy.”

people can run free and enjoy the countryside. As well as the Scouts, the site is used by other youth organisations, schools and colleges, all of whom recognise the value of the site. Very little has changed since those early days when it was just a field and some woods – yes, the trees (thousands) that were planted have grown; yes, there is still a barn and a toilet block. What is beautiful is that it is not over-developed. Deer, rabbits, pheasant and other wildlife remain plentiful but above all Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers can find adventure. It is hoped with time, and some donations, to make further improvements in the coming years. If you would like to help by donating something, go via www.justgiving. com/1stkeynshamscouts

Messing about on the river

“Chelwood – that was the first time I had ever slept in a tent.” “I recall stories of the mad axe man of Chelwood – did he really exist?” “I got caught picking out the eyes of the cats’ eyes on the road outside the main gate!”

Today Chelwood still holds that little piece of magic, where young

Rafting on the River Avon and paddling off down the river? Honing their knotting skills, finding their fitness and then putting it all together in teams, the Scouts soon found that the water was wet and it also looks like someone forgot their paddle! Thank you to Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park for letting us use their slipway and facilities – much appreciated.

Norwegians return

Next month we look forward to bringing you news about the return of Norwegian Scouts to Keynsham. Since 1977 Keynsham Scouts have had a link with Høvik Scout Group in Oslo, Norway. After a gap of a few years, a joint exchange camp called HIKE 18 is taking place here at our own campsite, with Explorer Scouts venturing to Cornwall. A week of activity is planned followed by a few days’ hospitality and seeing the sights of Bristol, Bath and London before returning home.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY An earthwork from the Dark Ages

From 1974 to 1996 Keynsham and Saltford were within the area covered by Wansdyke District Council, and for a similar period our parliamentary constituency had the same name. So where did the name come from and what do we know about the Wansdyke? The 1:25000 Ordnance Survey maps of this area show the surviving fragments of a linear earthwork that ran about two miles to the south of Keynsham and Saltford. This is known as the West Wansdyke. In the first issue of the history society’s journal in 1987, Charles Browne described it as “comprising a ditch with a rampart on the south side, running from Maes Knoll hill fort on Dundry, through Norton Malreward and Publow to Stantonbury, where it seems to have incorporated the northern rampart of the hill fort. It then continues across to Englishcombe and Vernham Wood to the Fosseway, south-west of Bath”. While some lengths have been

Remains of the Wansdyke south of Burnett, above, and below left south of Avebury levelled by cultivation, it is easy to spot the remains if you know where to look, although they do not exactly compare with Hadrian’s Wall for excitement. On the society’s Walk Leaflet No 4, the route crosses the Wansdyke about three quarters of a mile south of Burnett, as shown in the photograph. There has been a great deal of conjecture about when the Wansdyke was built and for what purpose. The consensus is that it was probably constructed late in the sixth century; it may have marked the border between the territories of the Britons (to the north-west) and the West Saxons, moving from the east. We know that this was frontier land at this time with a key battle fought at Dyrham in 577. It may not have been a defensive line in the sense of a continuous fortification, as parts were not well-sited for that,

but more of fall-back line behind which locals could retreat in times of trouble. It is generally accepted that the name comes from “Woden’s Dyke” after the Saxon god. The Wansdyke continued around the south side of Bath and to the east. In Wiltshire the remains of the East Wansdyke have been less disturbed by agriculture and are impressive, with banks up to four metres high. Though not local to us, they are worth a visit; the White Horse Trail includes a good length and is about three miles south of Avebury.

Visit the Mary Rose

On Wednesday, September 12, the society is running a coach trip from Keynsham to the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth. This is one of the finest museums of its type anywhere. The remains of

the pride of Henry VIII’s navy are now preserved and presented with the aid of the latest technology. The contents of the ship are displayed and interpreted to bring to life many facets of Tudor life, from musical instruments to the contents of the surgeon’s chest. We have a few places available for non-members. For more information, email info@keysalthist.org.uk or ring 0117 986 4453.

This month’s history walk – Mills and industry

A reminder that on Sunday, July 8, Steve Spear from the society will be leading a guided walk around Keynsham with the focus on its mills and industry. Meet by the café in the Memorial Park for a start at 2.30pm. All are welcome and there is no charge.

Broadcaster and president of the RSPB Miranda Krestovnikoff will be opening this year’s village fete at Compton Dando, writes Ros Anstey. The village will ring to the sound of church bells as the annual village event returns on Saturday, July 7, offering the customary exertions of tugof-war, skittles and an assault course to accompany the more genteel pursuits of tea and cakes,

stall games, lavish refreshments and bric-a-brac. Don’t overlook the floral arrangements and tower trips at the church of St Mary, the vintage tractor display, along with several traditional races, and a duck race, where you can hopefully back a winner. BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Walk reveals wonders of ancient woods

O

ur June excursion took 13 members to a very special place for wildlife, writes chairman Dave Sage. Just 20 miles from Keynsham lies Lower Woods, nestling in a valley between Wickwar and Hawkesbury Upton. Owned and managed by South Gloucesetershire Wildlife Trust and Avon Wildlife Trust, it is the second largest ancient woodland in South West England (after Savernake Forest in Wiltshire) and its importance goes back to at least to Roman times, as shown by the remains of a Roman villa, complete with magnificent mosaic tile floors (currently covered over). We were led by warden Neil Lodge (and his two terriers, Pip and B – Bombus terrestris!), who lives on site in the old hunting lodge and organises the management of the forest as well as educational activities for schools. Having worked on the reserve for six years, Neil was exceptionally knowledgeable, passionate, and inspiring about all aspects of the woodland. He explained how the woodland has been a centre of industry for many centuries, maintained by coppicing with standards, and providing wood for a wide range of uses, as well as charcoal (used in gunpowder!). He was especially uncomplimentary about grey squirrels (which strip hazel trees of young nuts, and take birds’ eggs and young) and deer – roe, fallow and muntjac – which strip young trees of bark and kill them. He explained several aspects

Eyed hawkmoth, top, and a black headed cardinal beetle

Neil Lodge leads the group around Lower Woods of woodland management, in particular the importance of clearing areas to prevent the woodland becoming over-mature and “closing in”, reducing light levels and reducing the diversity of ground-floor plants. Leaving open glades and rides encourages a wide range of plants to thrive, including several orchid species – common spotted, butterfly, twayblade, broad-leaved and violet helleborine. These in turn provide food for insects, including meadow brown, red admiral, speckled wood and holly blue butterflies, cardinal beetles, S. Hawker dragonflies and beautiful demoiselle damselflies. Finally, plenty of birds thrive in this unique ecosystem, including jays (largely responsible for planting acorns to perpetuate oak trees), buzzards, blackcaps, song

thrushes, dunnocks, chiff chaffs, chaffinches and grey wagtails near the streams. Sadly, the magnificent nightingale is currently absent from the woodland. A fabulous walk on a glorious afternoon, I would highly recommend anyone to pay a visit to Lower Woods. It is free of charge and criss-crossed with more than 60km of footpaths. Thanks to Liz Wintle for organising another highly successful trip. The following week, a select group of members carried out a follow-up Bioblitz at two sites in and near Keynsham, in Stockwood Vale and along the banks of the River Avon, upstream of the Lock Keeper pub. The first surveys included an analysis of moths caught overnight in Kathy and Martin Farrell’s garden

– more than 50 species were identified, including 59 individual “Heart and Dart” moths. We continued with stream dipping in the nearby brook, which flows down through Stockwood Vale. This revealed a surprising and pleasing diversity of invertebrates – stonefly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, cased and uncased caddis fly larvae, and freshwater shrimps, as well as minnow and young bullhead fish. An unpolluted (if slightly silted) stream! Not surprisingly, the River Avon’s banks revealed an impressive diversity of plants, insects and birds, including blue-tailed and azure damselflies, china mark moths and dock bugs (an unusual species of shield bug). All results will be collated and sent to Bristol Regional and Environmental Records Centre (BRERC), and added to the national database. Thanks to Kathy, Martin, John Aldridge, Rita Andrews, Liz Wintle and Max Hemmings for their energy, enthusiasm and expertise, as always!

No purchase necessary. The competition will be open from June 28 2018 until July 31 2018. All prize winners will be contacted via email after the closing date. No information regarding entries will be disclosed to any third party not involved in the promotion of The Downs Bristol. The prize is non-transferable or exchangeable. There is no cash alternative. Church on lookout for new choir leader St Francis Church in Keynsham is looking for a new choir leader to lead and develop their enthusiastic group of singers. The new recruit needs to be able to play the piano, take the weekly practice and attend the morning service. “This is a key role within our church community,” said Rev Andrew Judge, vicar at St Francis.

eynsham Walkers are Welcome stepped outside their comfort zone for their walk in June. Catching the bus to Bath, collecting other walkers on the way, 23 of us assembled at the bus station for the eight-mile moderately difficult walk around the south-east corner of the city. This included the Bath Skyline walk, which features prominently in the city’s attractions. It was a steady uphill climb for 1.5 miles, before we reached level ground at Sham Castle, where we rested for a few moments to admire the view. Skirting the golf club, with Batheaston across the valley, we entered Bathampton Wood, meeting many other walkers on the way. Crossing over the remains of the track that carried the stonefilled wagons from the quarry to the canal, we emerged into Bushey Norwood. Walking around the university grounds, we stopped at the welcoming National Trust refreshment stall, before passing the Claverton Cats’ and Dogs’ Home. There was then a level, clearly defined footpath for two miles, with Bath Clinic on our left, before heading into Rainbow Woods. A steep descent brought us out onto Widcombe Hill, which we joined and continued down into

the High Street, where the open doors of The Ram pub lured the remaining exhausted walkers in for a well-earned drink. This was another challenging but rewarding walk under our belt, which again attracted several new members.

Apprentice Matt earns top-three spot An apprentice working for a Saltford company has beaten hundreds of others to win a top-three spot in a national apprenticeship awards scheme. Matt Jones is an electrical apprentice with integrated services company Mobius Works and earned third place in this year’s NICEIC and ELECSA Apprentice of the Year Awards. More than 650 people applied for the awards, which celebrate the talents of electrical apprentices. Matt was named one of eight finalists after competing in an online exam about electrical installations, followed by a written examination for the top 20 per cent of entrants. The final eight then took part in a series of practical tests at competition sponsor Scolmore’s headquarters before the winners were announced at the Belfry Golf Course in Sutton Coldfield. Finishing in third place overall, Matt received prizes including a £250 holiday voucher. A Mobius spokesperson said: “We are incredibly proud of Matt’s achievement and will continue to invest in offering quality apprenticeships for talented young people who will have the opportunity gain the skills needed to play a fundamental part in our future growth.”

Tribute to carers A Saltford care home has paid tribute to its carers with a day of celebration. Kingfisher Lodge thanked its care staff for the service they provide to residents and patients, presenting each with a handmade personalised mug and treating them to fish and chips. The day coincided with National Carers Week and general manager Clare said: “I am very proud of the carers within Kingfisher Lodge. Our carers work hard to provide high quality, personalised care to the people living in our homes, often go above and beyond the call of duty and have a huge impact on people’s lives. They also offer friendship and comfort to residents and their relatives during what can be a very emotional time.”

Members of Bristol Friendship Force and guests with former Lord Mayor of Bristol Alastair Watson

Making lifelong friends in every corner of the world People across Bristol who open their homes to guests from around the world are preparing to welcome their next group of international visitors, this time from Northern Colorado in America. We meet Carole Duckett, president of the Bristol Friendship Force, and Gloria Woodman to find out more about “travelling the world as a guest” and making friends in every corner of the globe.

A

glimpse of “real life” can be the highlight of a holiday, from finding a little restaurant frequented only by locals to being unexpectedly welcomed to join a village celebration. These insights into another culture are memorable and, as one group of Bristol-based travel-lovers know, valuable experiences. Members of the Bristol Friendship Force (BFF) have been welcomed into homes around the globe, from Azerbaijan to Colombia and Kentucky, to experience the dayto-day routines of people from all walks of life. It’s travelling the world as

a guest, rather than a tourist, members say, meeting new people, discovering common ground as well as differences and – most importantly – making friends. The group is part of a global network of Friendship Force clubs spanning more than 60 countries, with visits – or “journeys” – arranged between them. Members from Bristol have just returned from a visit to Calgary and Medicine Hat in Canada and are now preparing to welcome FF members from Northern Colorado to Bristol in September. BFF president Carole Duckett, who lives in Keynsham,

said: “It’s a totally different experience to anything you could do as an ordinary tourist and you end up with people you can call friends all over the world. “We email and phone before each journey and when we finally meet it is already like we have known each other for a long time – I always find that magical. “We are all different but we are in the Friendship Force clubs for the same purpose – to make a little bit of difference and contribute to peace in our own small way.” The Friendship Force was launched, with the backing of US president Jimmy Carter, in 1977 during the Cold War as a nonreligious, non-political group with the simple aim to break down barriers between cultures through friendship. In 1992, the organisation was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in forging links between the US and Russia. Today there are 15,000 members who take part in “journeys” and act as hosts in

A Child in an Army Camp

Weary travellers, above, and the group of BFF members who travelled to the US in St Louis on the banks of the Mississippi River

During the last world war, as my father was serving in the army in India his family was given accommodation within the camp. What fun for a five-year-old who had no toys because we had to leave home in a hurry! One Saturday afternoon, Dad needed a new pair of shoes, so Mother and I went to the shoe shop with him. I love shoes! Our mode of transport on the camp was bicycles, or in my case a tricycle. I was left outside with the bikes. While I was waiting, two soldiers from the Black Watch came to the shop – one was in trousers but the other was in, what to a child was, a skirt! They rode up and rested their feet on the low wall. So I copied them. The soldier in the “skirt” interested me so I said hello, and he responded. The next question was,

Are you a boy or a girl? I’m a boy, he said smiling. Why are you wearing a skirt, was my next question. It’s not a skirt it’s a kilt, he said. I happened to be wearing a pleated skirt of the same tartan material. My mother made my kilt, was my response. Your mother must be very clever, he answered. I then got off my tricycle, lifted my skirt and said, Look I’ve got knickers to match, have you? He didn’t answer that question, but got on his bike and road off in a hurry and his friend nearly fell off his bike with laughter! I asked, Why has your friend gone away? The answer I got, with a laugh, was a warning – NEVER ask a Scotsman what he wears under his kilt, little girl. I have since heeded his warning! Erica Andrews

their hometowns and Carole, who has been a member of BFF for eight years, says real friendships are formed with members staying in touch and often arranging to visit each other again after their initial stays. “There is no better way to get to know people than by staying in their home,” she said. “Meeting someone for the first time can be daunting to some but it is surprising how quickly you become friends – and language never seems to be a problem even if you don’t speak the same one! “We all learn so much – I recently learned the proper way to drink tequila from some Mexican guests! And when people come to Bristol we can show them things that they wouldn’t see as tourists. Many of our visitors are very interested in how we buy houses and one guest was very curious as to how we all find time to cook ourselves a full English every morning before work or school!” The September visit from Northern Colorado will include

a welcome and farewell party as well as sightseeing in and around Bristol and the group is preparing a busy programme for their guests. The next “journey” away will see members possibly visit Brazil in 2019. The group, which has 36 members, is keen to attract new members of all ages to take part in visits as well as hosting people in the Bristol area. Besides travelling, the group also organises monthly coffee mornings and lunches as well as social outings such as walks or trips to the theatre. Members also support the candle-lit service hosted every Christmas by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, who is the group’s patron and always meets the Friendship Force members visiting the city. Carole and Gloria said: “If you like meeting new people, travelling and socialising both abroad and here in the UK then maybe Bristol Friendship Force is just the kind of club you are looking to join.” For more information about getting involved, email carole. duckett@caduce.plus.com

Harmonious second meet for music group by Ros Anstey After the success of the first Rural Links Music Project at Compton Dando Village Hall, the second proved to be similarly rewarding. Village agent Ken Webb said: “At the first event we had a group of mixed-ability musicians attend. We had a trumpet, violin, banjo, drums and keyboards, and everyone got on very well. By the end of the session they managed to play a tune together.” The project all started with the idea that there must be a lot of musicians in the rural community, or people who had always wanted to learn to play, and who

possibly had become isolated. Mr Webb said: “I sent an email to everybody I could think of and a piece in all the parish magazines. The response has been great and David Brunskill was the first to reply, offering his help and support with his extensive experience with choirs and bands.” At the second session, David conducted the group who, under his direction, ended up playing a tuneful Blue Moon, later followed by My Blue Heaven, with singer Michael Perkins bringing it to life. Guitarist Graham Jennings from Chew Magna said: “I came along to enjoy myself and meet

people like me, and talk to someone about music.” There were even spectators at this second event, including Chris Jones from Pensford, who said: “I want to learn to play the clarinet but wanted to see what it was all about before buying one.” Mr Webb said: “The project is self-supporting and the charge per session is £3 each, to cover hire of the hall and refreshments. “We are a mixed-ability self-help group, some experienced, some beginners and some improvers. The idea is that those that can help those that can’t. “We now have ten members

and would welcome anyone who would like to come along with their instruments and join us.” The group is holding the monthly sessions at Compton Dando Parish Hall, from 2pm until 4pm on a Thursday. The next two sessions will be Thursday, July 12, and Thursday, August 9. For further information, contact Mr Webb on 07919 006708, or leave a message at the office on 01275 333700. Music sessions at Compton Dando are part of the Rural Links project funded by St Monica Trust and being run in collaboration with the Village Agents.

embers of Keynsham Women’s Institute visited Bath Soft Cheese Co on Thursday, June 14. Cheesemaking has been taking place at Park Farm, Kelston for three generations and Graham, the owner, was happy to explain all the processes to our members. The farm has a herd of 160 Holstein Freisian cows. Sixty per cent of their milk is used to produce Bath Soft Cheeses; the rest is sold to other producers of cheese and ice cream. The award-winning cheese is produced in a state-of-the-art facil-

ity at Park Farm and the company is registered with Organic Farmers and Growers. There are mainly three types of cheese made here: Bath Soft Cheese, Wyfe of Bath and Bath Blue. After donning hairnets and shoe protectors and having a good hand wash the group were able to view and hear all about the processes involved in cheesemaking. After the tour, we were able to sample all the cheeses and then enjoy a fine lunch and a drink. There is a good cafe serving coffee, lunches and afternoon teas. Well worth a visit.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Last Days of Leda Gray by Essie Fox This is a haunting tale set in the heatwave of 1976 England, where a young journalist, Ed Peters, stumbles across a dilapidated shop in a seaside town called Brightland. He meets the owner, who tells him about his reclusive sister living out at White Cliff House. She was a movie star in the very early days of cinema, before World War I. Ed is intrigued – he needs a good story to sell – so goes up to the house to meet Leda Gray. From here the story switches to Leda – her family story; her interest in photography first, then early cinema and her infamous meeting with Charles Beauvois. It is the meeting with Beauvois that changes her life and that of her brother Theo, as the three of them embark on making films in the studio at White Cliff House. At its heart this is a love story between all the characters and really sets the scene of England before World War I and evokes the pioneering spirt of early cinema with its ghostly make-up, strange plots, beguiling actresses and eerie staging. Part ghost story, part mystery story – a good read.

Adult Non-Fiction

The Adventurer’s Guide to Britain by Jen and Sim Benson As the summer approaches, why not try this exciting guide to Great

Britain and its glorious countryside. This book outlines some great adventures – 150 in total across Scotland, the Scottish Islands, Wales and England – aimed at any reasonably active person. These places can be accessed by bike or on foot and include secret caves and wild swimming. There are handy instructions for each location such as camping sites, whether it is family friendly, local highlights, map references and challenge levels. Here are some tasters: Kayak the River Wye 100; Black Down and the Temple of the Winds (Surrey); the Cotswold Way and, my particular favourite, Escape the City by Bike, which describes the Thames Valley Cycleway starting at Putney Bridge in south-west London, travelling through Windsor Great Park and finishing in central Oxford. This is an excellent guide for all things outdoor and can take you to some excellent adventures within Great Britain and to see some breathtaking countryside.

with the darkest of undercurrents, full of rage and rallying cries: storytelling at its most spellbinding. The plot was clever and intricate but not overly complex, mostly following the plot of the traditional tale, though it had a few surprises of its own. Deep beneath the sea Gaia is a young mermaid who dreams of freedom from her controlling father in a world where a woman can’t be anything but beautiful. On her first swim to the surface, she is drawn towards a human boy. She longs to join him in his carefree world, but how much will she have to sacrifice? It has a real feminist vibe, which only adds to the depth of this heart-breaking tale. The character building and world building is simply beautiful, and I found myself instantly absorbed. The ending didn’t disappoint either, it was haunting and oh so sad. I look forward to reading it again. All in all, it’s a lovely gem of a novel and one I would recommend for fans of retellings. CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Stemming the flow of wasted water

W

e’re basking in a glorious summer. There’s a glut of strawberries, and it’s looking like a bumper crop of apples this year. Despite the recent lack of rain, the Met Office says that spring has seen average rainfall. But longer term, the Environment Agency says the way we use water in the UK is unsustainable. It estimates that three billion litres of water are lost in England every day through leaks from pipes. That’s equivalent to the amount of water used by more than 20 million people in an average day. Individual households also use unsustainable levels of water. All in all, one third of water taken from the natural environment is wasted through leaks, treatment losses, and in people’s homes. This huge demand for water places stress on our rivers and streams, harming wildlife and damaging wetlands. Stagnant water could even – as our climate warms – see the introduction of

diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Climate change is likely to deliver more extremes of weather – torrential rain followed by extremely dry patches. This cycle means that more water runs off the land rather than seeping into it and replenishing the water table. These factors all lead the Environment Agency to warn that the UK might be facing a 30-year drought. This is

likely to be worse in the South East, but even in this green corner of England we will see the effects. Clearly, it’s up to the water companies to address the hugely wasteful leaks that are going on in the system. But we can all do our bit. As a base line, measure your water use. The Energy Saving Trust has an online water-use calculator to help you work this out. Consider a water meter – they can save money if you’re a small family in a larger house. Take shorter showers, don’t overfill the kettle, wash fruit in a bowl rather than under a running tap. Turn the tap off when you’re cleaning your teeth and use a watering can rather than a hose or sprinkler. Wash your car by hand (or get the kids to do it). Only using the dishwasher or washing machine when there’s a full load conserves water and cuts your fuel bills. And finally, if it hasn’t rained for a while, why not leave out water for the birds and small creatures in the garden? And don’t forget to top up the pond (with a watering can, of course!).

Have say on greener buildings policy Residents are being asked for their views on moves to make new buildings and developments across Bath and North East Somerset more green. B&NES Council is consulting on a new document setting out how developments can be better adapted to the effects of climate change. The draft policy includes a benchmark for all new-builds to achieve a 19 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and that major development on existing buildings should achieve a 10 per cent reduction. Development should also be future-proofed to avoid overheating and new buildings should also save water, reduce waste and use sustainable materials, the draft policy says. The consultation runs until July 27 and details can be found at libraries and at www.bathnes. gov.uk/SustainableConstruction. Comments can be emailed to planning_policy@bathnes.gov.uk

Badgers and Bats in full swing to hit seven home runs Both Bristol baseball teams demonstrated their offensive power over the weekend of June 16 and 17 as they won their three games, hitting seven home runs, writes our correspondent. In Cambridge, the Badgers overcame the Monarchs 15-3 and 18-3 while the Bats beat the Jets 37-8 in Weston-super-Mare. Ben Smith and Vil Katinas both hit two home runs as the Badgers maintained their grip on the BBF AA Central Division with a 14-0 record. Five Badgers players managed multiple hits in the first game, which saw starting pitcher Tom Hollies go six innings, striking out four Monarchs. The second game was more of the same as the Badgers recorded nine hits, with Luke Claflin making his debut from the pitcher’s mound, striking out five batters over three innings. “I was really proud of the team this weekend. We had 10 players for the two games, missing some key players and we still came away with two solid victories,” said Tom Hollies, manager of the Bats. “Our approach against two good starting pitchers was impressive and four double plays in game one showed how well the team played defensively.” Tom Knox was the star for the Bats in Weston. He blasted two home runs and completed

the rare feat of hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. As a team, the Bats had a field day at the plate recording 32 hits, with Nerius Tamosiunas also adding to his season’s home run tally. Nerius completed a good day from the pitcher’s mound, striking out six Jets over five innings. “It was a great way to finish the first half of the season,” said Bats manager Keith Weinberg. “The team is showing real character and on-field improvements and I think we can really push hard for the playoffs.” Both teams then had a weekend off from competition when the club hosted the annual South West Baseball League (SWBL) All Star game on Sunday, June 24. The best players from the Northern Conference took on their equivalents from the Southern Conference at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham, where Bristol Baseball Club is based.

Bowlers kit out scarecrows for town’s trail The Men’s and Ladies’ captains of Keynsham Bowling Club, Beresford Parker and Ann Newbery, are pictured enjoying some refreshments at the club’s barbecue – with their scarecrow effigies, writes our correspondent. These have been made by club members as an entry into the Keynsham in Bloom scarecrow trail. More than 50 members enjoyed the food and drink that was organised by the club’s social committee, to raise funds for the captains’ charity, which, this year is the Jessie May Trust. The captains were delighted that more than £400 was added to the fund. While the club has a very active social life, it is primarily a bowling club and results on the green are important. In the Thursday night Bristol and District Men’s League, the A team is in third position in division two, the B team is fifth in division three and the C team

seventh in division four. In the Saturday North Somerset League the A team is fifth in Premier 2, the B team sixth in East 1 and the C team fourth in East 2. Competing in the Lloyds Trophy, the men beat Bradley Stoke by seven shots in the first round but lost by 16 shots at home to Greenbank in the second round. The ladies play in the North Somerset Ladies’ League where they are currently in third position, in addition to fielding a team in the Mendip Triples League. Most of these fixtures, together with friendly games, are played in the afternoons but if you walk past the green in the morning you will witness plenty of activity as the club’s internal competitions are in full swing.

Frys suffer series of league losses

Frys not able to regain shot, took four points from the 46-48 loss. Scores: Rink 1: 11-23; Rink 2: 16-14; Rink 3: 19-11; Frys 46-48 Ardagh (4-6). The preceding three league games also saw losses for Frys. On May 24, Avonvale were the visitors to Frys, in a game that saw rain fall throughout. Frys started the better, gaining the early lead on rinks 1 and 2. After the halfway point, Avonvale fought back to gain the lead in the closing stages. Frys were unable to gain the four shots required to win the game on final end, losing 44-49, only picking

Frys Bowling Club hosted Ardagh in their latest match of the Bristol and District League, writes our correspondent. Ardagh held a slender lead at the halfway point on Thursday, June 24, after Frys settled into the game after a slow start. The game remained close with Frys taking two rinks to Ardagh’s one rink, but the match came down to the final end with the scores tied. Frys held two shots, but with Ardagh’s penultimate bowl, the count was reversed and, with

Frys took the early advantage, but then heavy rain caused a suspension in play. The break suited Canford as they pulled out the lead on rinks 2 and 3. Only rink 1 could bring Frys two points as Canford came away 50-35 winners. On June 7, Frys travelled to Henleaze ‘A’ for the seventh game of the league season. Henleaze got the better start, pulling out a lead. Rink 3 struggled to pick up shots despite close heads as Henleaze eased away.

Henleaze led on rinks 1 and 2, but after the halfway point, Frys started to close the gap. Rink 2 were unable to bridge the gap and with rink 3 losing, rink 1 had eight shots to overturn on their final two ends. Frys were unable to get the required shots but did win the rink to pick up two points from the 54-46 loss.
