We're still open, say traders KEYNSHAM High Street is being closed to all traffic for an estimated three weeks for excavation works, as part of the major town centre improvement scheme. This phase of the project, which was due to start on June 28, will see the widening and rearranging of traffic islands at the Charlton Road junction and the construction of a contraflow cycle lane. Traffic is being diverted along Ashton Way and Rock Road. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance to avoid peak times where possible. Land sold for just £1 so school can be built LAND worth £1.9 million is being sold off for just £1 to allow a new energy-efficient primary school to be built in Keynsham. Bath and North East Somerset Council is already backing the new Two Rivers School to the tune of £1.5 million to help it achieve the sought-after Passivhaus Plus standard. The sale of the land to the Department for Education (DfE) for £1 was signed off by council cabinet members Dine Romero and Richard Samuel on June 8. If the council had not agreed to transfer the 1.2-hectare site in the Hygge Park development by June 18, the DfE would have been unable to award the building contract and there would have been a significant risk that it would not be ready for the September 2022 intake. Plans for the Church of England school – double the size of the one originally planned in 2016 – were unveiled in January and approved by council officers in May. It will be operated by the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust. Pupils are currently being taught in purpose-built temporary accommodation at Wellsway School, IKB Academy, Chandag Infants and Chandag Juniors. The B&NES notice for the land sale proposal stated that transferring the site to the DfE for £1 reflected the community benefit of much-needed pupil places. “Delivery of the school infrastructure will be centrally funded by the DfE and the

council will not be required to meet the cost of building a new school. “The use of the site will be restricted and will revert to the council at a peppercorn rate should the site no longer be used for a primary school.” The notice said the land’s £1.9 million market value would be cut to £1.24 million if the council restricted the use to a primary school. The council bought the land for £1.44 million using developers’ contributions after approving the 250 homes at Hygge Park, 100 homes off Parkhouse Lane and another 100 off Charlton Road. The housing growth is driving the need for the new school. Praising the project at February’s full council meeting, Keynsham East’s Councillor Andy Wait said: “B&NES Council has given extra funding of up to £1.5 million to the new Two Rivers Primary School so that it can obtain the certification of Passivhaus Plus. This means the building has to be extremely energy efficient. “B&NES funding has made this possible by using the most, up-to-date, green technologies. “The school’s curriculum has an outdoors philosophy, with woodland areas and a natural stream running through the grounds, taking learning beyond the classroom. “There are also cycling and walking routes to the school and a great deal of cycle storage for pupils and teachers.”

High Street closed to traffic for 3 weeks From Page 1 and is keeping them updated. The Keynsham Independent Businesses and Traders Association stressed that, although members have been critical of the timing of the work following lockdown, they are still able to welcome their customers and are looking forward to the benefits of the scheme. A spokesperson told the Voice: “We welcome the public realm improvements. We are open. The High Street will be open as soon as Covid distancing is relaxed. “There are very few days that it will be closed during work hours, and work is being done at night if is in front of doorways.” The council says the High Street will only be closed to traffic when necessary for the construction programme. Businesses and ward councillors have been consulted on the periods of closure. The project began on June 1 with lifting of the existing paving and kerbs in front of the Methodist Church and laying of new materials. The section between the Post Office to Lloyds Pharmacy is now under development. The scheme to revitalise the High Street is funded by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership through the Local Growth and Getting Building Funds, administered by the West of England Combined Authority. It is also funded by the West of England Combined Authority through its Love our High Streets programme. Councillor Richard Samuel, B&NES council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economic development and resources, said: “The Keynsham High Street works are progressing on schedule. We can start to see how the project will rejuvenate the street environment and encourage trade.” He said the latest phase requires excavation across the width of the street to install drainage. “Unfortunately this means the High Street will have to close to vehicles, but I’d like to reassure residents and visitors that businesses are still open and

Pictured inset at the start of the project last month, left to right, Keynsham Town Council chair Andy Wait, B&NES leader Councillor Kevin Guy and West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris - see Dan's column on Page 19 please do continue to shop local.” The council was awarded £1.5 million, through the West of England Combined Authority, towards the cost of implementing the first phase of public realm improvements in June 2019 to help create a better retail environment and support the local economy. The project will deliver footpath widening and resurfacing, better signs, and cycling and bus stop facilities on the High Street between Bath Hill and Charlton Road. There will also be new street furniture, streetlights, landscaping and trees. The scheme is also being coordinated with Openreach works to upgrade its existing broadband infrastructure to full fibre ahead of the new paving being laid. This will provide many Keynsham businesses and residents with faster, more reliable access to the internet. The highway is only restricted during the existing road closure in place for social distancing or where a restriction is required by the construction programme. The work is expected to take eight months. For more information on the plans and for construction updates, visit www. bathnes.gov.uk/keynsham.

Keynsham set to get new constituency A NEW Keynsham and North Somerset constituency could be created in a major shake-up of electoral boundaries. By law every constituency must now contain between 69,724 and 77,062 voters. In 2018, North East Somerset’s electorate was well within that margin at 70,070 while Bath’s stood at 59,887. However, the Boundary Commission for England has proposed increasing the number of constituencies in the South West from 55 to 58, meaning three more MPs for the region, and redrawing the map in some areas. The North East Somerset constituency has been held by Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg since it was created in 2010. It is being completely redrawn but what remains looks likely to remain a safe Tory seat. The western part of the constituency would be renamed Keynsham and North East Somerset and swallow the

The Lib Dems’ Bathavon South ward and Labour-leaning former mining communities around Radstock would be severed from their North East Somerset neighbours and become part of a new Frome

constituency, spanning as far south as Bruton, and north to Marksbury and Wilmington. The current Somerton and Frome constituency has been represented by Tory MP David Warburton since 2015. Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Wera Hobhouse’s Bath seat would absorb communities north of the city that swung to her party at the last council

The Boundary Commission is required to make a final report to the Speaker of the House of Commons before July 1, 2023, recommending any changes it believes are appropriate to the distribution, size, shape or name of constituencies in England. Parents' fears over 5G mast at school SOME parents could take their children out of Broadlands Academy if plans for a 5G mast are approved, amid fears for their health, according to objectors. The school in St Francis Road, Keynsham, already has a mast standing 17.9 metres high that could be replaced by a 20-metre mast with six antennae, a microwave dish and other equipment. More than 160 people have objected, with many concerned for children’s health, and only seven have supported the application. Keynsham Town Council branded the proposed mast “wholly inappropriate in this sensitive location” and said Bath and North East Somerset Council’s director of public health should assess the impact the upgrade would have on the town. It added: “There is already talk within the community of parents/carers removing children from the school, should the application be granted. “Concerns are then that the town will lose a much-needed secondary school with a good Ofsted rating and very good nursery.” When B&NES Council planning committee members rejected plans for a mast in Bath in December after hundreds of objections – mainly on health grounds – they were warned against “flying in the face

of” government guidance insisting that the rollout of 5G is safe. Digital minister Matt Warman has said there is “no convincing evidence” that radiofrequency field exposures below guideline levels cause health effects in either adults or children. Applicant Cornerstone, a joint venture from Vodafone and O2, has sought to reassure the public, saying in its proposals: “We recognise that the growth in mobile communication has led, in some cases, to public concern about perceived health effects of mobile technology, in particular about siting masts close to local communities. “Our radio base stations are designed and built so that the public are not exposed to radio frequency fields above the guidelines set by the International Commission on NonIonizing Radiation Protection.” Residents were not convinced, with one

describing the upgrade as an “unacceptable experiment on the health of the public”. Sarah Meadows said in her objection: “Until these technologies are proven safe, they should not be used or installed anywhere near children whose bodies are still developing and are at even greater risk of harm by 5G and other wireless radiofrequency radiation.” Others have criticised the visual impact of the proposed upgrade. Councillor Brian Simmons has asked for the application to be considered by the council’s planning committee. School leaders have sought to distance themselves from the application. Academies Enterprise Trust secondary executive director Nathan Thomas wrote to parents on May 11 saying the mast predates the trust’s involvement with Broadlands and removing it would be “legally incredibly challenging”. “The legislation makes it virtually impossible to remove masts, or contest their upgrades. The new rent we receive will be even less than currently,” he said. B&NES Council will decide the fate of the application in due course. Stephen Sumner, Local Democracy Reporting Service

n NEWS A COUPLE are campaigning for a change in the law on IVF funding for same-sex partners. Former Keynsham Town footballer Danielle Beazer and her partner Stacey Pearson have launched a petition that has so far attracted more than 34,000 signatures. The petition asks for a discussion in parliament over the disparity in NHS thresholds for fertility treatments in England when compared to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and for greater consistency to be introduced amid an ongoing ‘postcode lottery’ that exists for same-sex couples and not those in heterosexual relationships. Danielle, 34, who is manager at a physio clinic, was a Keynsham Town defender from November 2016 to November 2017, when she finished to start IVF treatment. She and her partner Stacey, who live in Bristol, have a little girl called Willow, who was conceived through their first attempt at IVF and whose third birthday is at the end of this month. But since then they have suffered two miscarriages and a further failed IVF cycle in recent months, with treatments costing the couple thousands of pounds. They are now campaigning to help others in similar scenarios who are trying to navigate the system. Danielle told the Voice: “We have had a great reaction so far to our petition, and the amount of people we have helped already by lending advice has been heartwarming. “We are not going to stop until we’ve reached our target of 100,000 signatures. We really

Couple fight for change in law over IVF funding need everyone’s help to evoke change. “We are hoping that by continuing to talk about our difficulties, it will help our fight to make a difference.” Stacey, 33, a PE teacher and referee, states on their petition: “In England, in a same sex relationship you need to have around six failed cycles of IVF or IUI before getting one funded attempt on the NHS. “In a heterosexual relationship, you get an

attempt for free if you meet certain criteria. “In Wales, all females regardless of sexuality get two attempts on the NHS. In Scotland, all females get three free attempts on the NHS. In Northern Ireland, all females get one attempt. It’s about time England caught up and offered same-sex females equal rights. “I didn’t choose to be gay, but because I am, we have had to pay up to £6,000 per IVF cycle and around £1,500 for an embryo

transfer. That’s not including the cost of donor sperm and drugs. “We are lucky that we have one amazing little girl. But I am hoping that we can change things for hundreds of couples going through this process in the future.” To view the petition, go to change.org and search for ‘Funded IVF for Same Sex Couples in England’. n KEYNSHAM ROTARY Nigel looks to future as new president AFTER a difficult year as President of Keynsham Rotary, John Pike has stood down to be succeeded by Nigel Hutchings. The Covid-compliant proceedings were held at Saltford Golf Club on June 23. Nigel has worked locally in banking and regional commerce for many years and brings a wealth of business experience to the club for his second term in office. We thank John for his careful stewardship during an unprecedented time, ensuring that despite severe curtailment of our normal activities, we retained our membership and a determination to ‘bounce back’. Before handing over the reins to Nigel, John inducted a new member, Paul Faulkner, who is Saltford Golf Club’s catering manager.

presented to longstanding member Barry Davis for his support over many years. As well as being a staunch Rotarian, he previously made a major contribution to running the Mencap charity at national level. John then passed the presidential baton to Nigel, who thanked John for keeping the club ‘alive’ during lockdown. Looking forward, Nigel said there is much to do to regain our footing and outlined his plans to achieve this with events and community service projects. Mooring ban review after legal challenge A WINTER mooring ban in Saltford is set to be reviewed after live-aboard boaters mounted a legal challenge. Following years of mounting tensions between people living on the water and homeowners in Mead Lane, Bath and North East Somerset Council banned mooring between November and the end of February. A judicial review has now adjourned so cabinet members can review the decision. Boater Avril McGovern said the council could face further legal action if it presses ahead with plans to remove the 14-day moorings that those who live on the water say are a vital resource. The authority said it will do its best to balance the needs of the boating community, local residents and other groups interested in the site. Ms McGovern, whose friend filed the judicial review, said: “The Atkins reports didn’t mention anything about a seasonal closure, they [the cabinet] just made it up. They’ve done that to pander to the local residents because they couldn’t take everything away.” Residents had branded B&NES Council “negligent” for allowing mooring in Mead Lane and said it was “imperative” they were taken away.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

Boater Avril McGovern is challenging plans to remove moorings at Saltford They accused boaters of criminal activity, staying longer than they were allowed, running their engines for extended periods, damaging the riverbank and littering. However, Atkins, consultants brought in by the council, found “no indication that mooring is adversely affecting bank stability”. It said Mead Lane was “possibly the only place on the river where mooring for 14 days is practical and legitimate” and it was

unlikely anywhere else on the River Avon is as suitable for mooring. Ms McGovern added: “The Atkins report recommends leaving the moorings there and enhancing them. “The council say they’re extensively consulting but they aren’t listening to the consultation, they’re making their own mind up.” The council is aiming to remove the 14-day moorings by the end of 2022, once other locations have been identified. But Ms McGovern said boaters had heard nothing and could only assume no progress had been made. “What sort of assurance are you able to give of the safety of any new space? Are you going to do another survey to provide the same level of safety if you’re going to put us anywhere else?” she asked. “If you’re going to move us, we need to know it’s got the same amenities – but we know that’s not possible. There is nowhere else. That’s the issue. All the locations identified in the Atkins report are not suitable.” A council spokesperson said work had started to look for suitable locations for mooring and all relevant parties will be engaged as it develops the proposals.

A KEYNSHAM takeaway has reined in plans to serve alcohol into the early hours after police fears it would become a “final destination”. Chick-O-Land currently closes at midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays but applied to open daily until 6am and sell alcohol throughout. Other pubs and bars in the High Street shut at 2am. Chick-O-Land does not currently have an alcohol licence. Objecting to the plans, Avon and Somerset Police licensing officer Paul Kendall said: “Police are concerned that the premises will become a final destination premises, causing those who have been drinking in various local establishments (already into the early hours) to gravitate to the premises, which is located in an area that already suffers incidents of alcohol-related crime and disorder. “This part of the High Street has the largest concentration of premises selling alcohol and late-night refreshment. As a result, it is also the biggest area of crime and disorder.” Proposing conditions, the police said walk-ins should not be served after 2am but the takeaway should still be able to deliver food and alcohol until 5am. It said deliveries must only be made to fixed postal addresses and drivers should only carry alcohol that has been ordered. Chick-O-Land agreed to the conditions and the application was approved by Bath and North East Somerset Council’s licensing sub-committee on June 3.

NEWS Councillor Phil Harding has backed Wessex Water's proposed bridge but Bitton residents have voiced opposition PLANS for a new bridge across the River Avon to take lorries off a tight stretch of road in Saltford have been backed by the parish council. Wessex Water wants to build the new structure to improve access to the water recycling centre ahead of its planned expansion to meet future demand. Currently HGVs have to negotiate pinch points and height restrictions on High Street and Mead Lane, a route that is prone to flooding. The utility company has submitted plans for a new 400-metre access road to the A431 at Bitton and a new single span bridge for use by its vehicles and walkers to cross the river. The plans say: “The scheme seeks to address the constraints associated with the existing access, which is inadequate for HGV traffic and impacts of traffic on Saltford Conservation Area. “The improvement to the access is required both to support routine operations at the water recycling centre and to support future development at the water recycling centre, which in turn will support housing and economic growth.” Wessex Water said the need to maintain access to the site represented an exceptional circumstance to allow the development in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the green belt. Some habitat will be lost but it is proposing to create wetland habitats and plant trees. Saltford parish councillors have agreed to support the scheme in response to Bath & North East Somerset Council’s planning consultation. The council recognised that the plans kept green-belt loss to a minimum when compared with previous proposals. It also agreed that Wessex Water’s plans to even out traffic load between the A4 and A431 was a practical option, helping

New bridge 'will ease traffic woes'

Mead Lane during flooding last year - the route is currently by lorries visiting the water recycling centre to reduce congestion on the A4 Bath Road. Phil Harding, chair of the parish council’s planning committee, said: “HGVs have experienced many difficulties visiting the site via Saltford’s Norman Road, High Street and Mead Lane that are narrow and single-lane along several lengths, so the new access bridge route should greatly alleviate those problems for residents and visitors, as well as for HGVs visiting the site.” Saltford Parish Council also appreciated the benefits of the proposal on the natural environment, including Wessex Water’s proposal to create a new wetland habitat in Saltford. Saltford Environment Group has also backed the proposals on similar grounds, saying

they would keep damage to the natural environment to a minimum, alleviate traffic problems on the A4, and that the proposed wetland habitat would help local wildlife recover from existing habitat losses. But the proposals have sparked concern in nearby Bitton. The application has been met with 88 objections so far, with some asking why Wessex Water should get special treatment. George Oliver, who lives in Bitton, said: “If everyone with property/land adjacent to the river wished to build a private bridge for their own use, it would be denied – so why a sewage works? “For me, the benefits to the general public definitely don’t outweigh the negatives to the

construction of the bridge, impact on a beautiful area of river, all for a company’s selfish attitude so they don’t have to drive as far.” Cassie Perryman added: “It seems insane to send heavy plant traffic through a small village and past a primary school when there is no benefit to the village itself and traffic is already problematic.” Martine Kinsman said the scheme would be “disastrous” for Bitton, which already suffers from traffic “thundering” through the village. Saltford residents saw things differently, with 75 comments in favour so far. Supporter Heather Angus said the bridge can “only benefit all residents in Saltford”, while Richard Staples said the proposal to remove large vehicles from High Street and Mead Lane was “eminently sensible”. Double yellow lines have recently been painted in Mead Lane after Saltford Parish Council raised safety concerns following “numerous instances of dangerous and inconsiderate parking” and “scenes of gridlock”. Nearby in The Shallows, it has worked with Bath and North East Somerset Council to create Saltford’s first resident parking zone. If the bridge is approved by the council, Wessex Water expects construction work to start next spring and take 12 months. A stretch of the River Avon Trail will need to be diverted. The application can be found on B&NES Council’s planning portal using the reference 21/02322/FUL.

Sunday teas set to return

'Rat-run' relief for villagers PLANS are taking shape to prevent ‘rat-running’ through Queen Charlton. The village is included in a raft of Liveable Neighbourhood Schemes proposed by Bath & North East Somerset Council. The Queen Charlton plan aims to address issues concerned with through-traffic, speeding and road safety. Project design and public consultation will be undertaken ahead of an experimental traffic regulation order for implementation in 2022. The scheme would then be monitored “live” before any decision to make it permanent. B&NES ward councillor Alastair Singleton said: “Queen Charlton is a rural village which has suffered significant ‘ratrunning’ and driving without care for resident safety or road

Mum's daredevil dive to help families A LOCAL mum is taking part in a skydive next month to raise money to help families recover from trauma. She and two friends will leap from a plane at 15,000 feet for a parachute jump on August 20. Each participant will be harnessed to an instructor for the daredevil event, which will include about one minute of free fall. The mother, who asked not to be named, is raising money for the Trauma Recovery Centre (TRC) in Bath, which she praised for its “wonderful, life-changing work.” She told the Voice: “I decided to jump for TRC as they have provided amazing, ongoing therapy for both my daughters, who sadly witnessed domestic abuse. “Trauma obviously has a huge impact on a child’s brain and will impact them in adulthood unless the correct trauma therapy is given. “I attend parenting classes while my daughters see their individual therapists so that I can understand their trauma better

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Lamb & Lark's many roles over 250 years

M

any older residents of Keynsham have fond memories of the Lamb & Lark Hotel, which was at the heart of the town, both geographically and metaphorically, for about 250 years until it fell victim to the wrecker’s ball in, we believe, July 1971, exactly 50 years ago. In fact, the building at the south end of High Street, where Poundland and Peacocks now stand, was not the first inn of this name (which is believed to originate from the saying “Go to bed with the lamb and rise with the lark”) in the town. Its predecessor was a large hostelry, with yard, coach house, stabling and malthouse, across the road on land stretching from the junction of the High Street and Bath Hill West, down the hill to Back Lane. At that time, the corner was a sharp, right-angled bend at the top of the hill; it was a hazard to horses and carts and pedestrians alike. When the road was upgraded and widened as part of the turnpike improvements in 1827, the sharp bend was removed and some of the buildings demolished. By this time, the inn itself had long since moved, the old premises replaced by the new building in 1745. For some years, this was known as the Duke of Cumberland, in honour of the leader of the British troops who defeated Bonnie Prince Charlie and his rebel forces at Culloden. The new Lamb & Lark had many functions. By 1753, it was an excise office, where duty was collected on beer brewed locally, and it retained this role until at least 1908. We know that auctions were held there regularly, a carrier was

Employees of the Tangent Tool Company gather outside the Lamb & Lark for their works outing, probably in the 1920s Photo courtesy of Robert Drower Right, the Lamb and Lark in the 1960s based there, and in the Bath Journal of 21st April 1776 it was reported that “We are assured that the real Senior Shappee, Practitioner in Physic and Surgery, who travels by Act of Parliament for curing Ruptures or Broken Bellies of all kinds, if the Grief can be put up [with], in Half an Hour was at the Duke of Cumberland in Keynsham in order to receive patients from Bath and Bristol”. In another government role, the local revision courts, which revised voters’ lists for county elections, were held at the inn until 1897. Other judicial functions included the holding of inquests, the most famous leading to the trial of a 10-year-old boy found guilty of

causing the death of a young lad by pushing him into the River Avon. Between 1829 and 1875, after another change of name, it was known as the Lamb Hotel. It was in this period that the important role the inn – with its yard and stables – had always held as a staging post for coaches travelling between Bristol, Bath and on to London, came to a sudden end. The opening of the Great Western Railway in 1841 caused this traffic to collapse almost overnight; the success of the Lamb and many other such coaching inns would depend on such business. It was probably rescued by the increasing population and prosperity of the Victorian period.

Many local organisations, such as the Union Friendly Society and the board of guardians for the workhouse, were based there, involving meetings of the local worthies, no doubt with related dinners and hospitality. There were auctions and sales, the town band practised in the function room and at one time the yard outside provided a home for the Keynsham Fire Brigade’s appliance. After a period of frequent changes of licensee, the Lamb & Lark was taken over by Georges’ Brewery in 1909 and remained in their ownership. It was popular for social functions including balls, dinners and wedding receptions. Until the First World War, it remained “the gentry's pub”, but fashions changed and trade gradually ebbed. By the 1950s the assembly rooms at the rear of the hotel had become the venue for the grandly named Palm Court Ballroom. This was very popular for a period and patrons would drive miles to dance to the music of Charles, the blind organist, encouraged by the fact that closing time was half-an-hour later than in Brislington. Ten years later, business was declining and the fabric of the building had deteriorated, although it still retained a certain grandeur. Georges’ eventually decided to sell the property. Despite strenuous efforts to save it from demolition, with much correspondence between the urban district council, the brewery and officers of this society, no solution was found and this imposing building reached the end of its varied life. Kate breaks three records in 24 hours KEYNSHAM athlete Kate Strong is the first woman in the world to complete a 24-hour cycling marathon on a static bike. She pedalled 433.1 miles in a day and also broke the world records for one and 12 hours in the process. Kate started her challenge at Clifton Observatory in Bristol at 3pm on May 26. She cycled 24.2 miles in the first hour and 232.1 miles in 12 hours. These times exceed Kate’s previous one-hour world record of 23.94 miles, which she broke on January 7 this year, and the current record for 12 hours, which is 216.24 miles achieved by Slovenian athlete Tina Ternjak in 2012. Kate, who is also a world champion triathlete, is the first female athlete ever to achieve a record for a woman cycling on a static bike for 24 hours – although a male record exists. Her world record attempts will be officiated by Guinness in due course.

Kate Strong with her partner Kieren Windsor Kate said: “I’m so grateful and honoured to have attempted this challenge, and earning three world records is a huge privilege. “Being a 42-year old plantbased woman cycling a bamboo bike, most people would think what I attempted was impossible. I’m proud to be redefining what’s possible.” “Since I took up sport

alongside my professional career, I keep finding new ways to demonstrate that we are far greater than we could imagine and to hopefully inspire others - especially women - to step up and strive for greatness.” Kate only started training for athletic success in her early 30s and within two years was crowned age-group world

champion in long-distance triathlon in 2014. Since then, she has regularly participated in extreme sports and is planning to undertake the Limitless Challenge between June 2023 and May 2024. The never-before-attempted feat will see her aim to cycle 3,000 miles across the US, swim the English Channel and climb Everest, all within 12 months. Kate attributes her success in part to a plant-based diet, having gone vegan in 2012. As an asthmatic, Kate had often struggled with a shortness of breath, but after removing dairy from her diet she found that within weeks she was no longer wheezy. Kate is also working with a team of researchers to better understand human performance more generally and how we can improve and elevate our mental and physical abilities in varying conditions. ON THE BEAT

Watch out for email and text scammers

D

ue to unforeseen circumstances, I missed the deadline for last month’s update, so I need to cover a couple of incidents. The first was where a car crashed into the ambulance station on Park Road. We are confident the ongoing investigation will have a positive outcome, and once the wheels of justice have spun, I will give you an update. I was lucky to be invited to speak to the Cotswold Cubs at Keynsham Scout Hut. It was a great session and chatting to the children raised some interesting questions which probably relate more to the film Hot Fuzz than they do to policing in Keynsham. Feedback was really positive, and although my police car is not as good as the ones on TV’s Police Interceptors, the children seemed impressed. n People, especially the vulnerable, have been falling for a number of scams, mainly via email and texts. They include messages purporting to be from Royal Mail requesting a

with PC James Evans small fee to have a parcel or letter released. It contains a link inviting you to enter your payment method. Once the scammers have your details, they can use them to take money from your bank account. If you receive any messages asking for money that you are not expecting, do not follow the links or ring the numbers provided. Use a number from a reliable source, such as the company’s own website, and call to check that the fee claimed is genuine. If it is not, please report the message or email Action Fraud on their website or call them on 0300 123 2024.

n We are still getting reports of catalytic converter thefts in our area. The offence can be committed in minutes and basically involves jacking a car up, cutting off the catalytic converter, removing it, lowering the car and driving off. Offenders have been arriving in another vehicle, one male acting as lookout while the other removes the converter. If you see behaviour like this on the streets or in a car park, please call 999 straight away and discreetly, without putting yourself in harm’s way, gain as much information as possible. For example, we can use the offenders’ vehicle registration to track the car via our Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to see where the vehicle is heading to apprehend it. Descriptions of the people involved are also helpful. Catalytic converters contain precious metals, although to remove these metals is not easy so the market for them is pretty niche.

The issue is that the replacement cost to the victim is high, so please help us reduce these offences. n We have received reports of damage to the Keynsham community woodland off Manor Road. Since Covid reared its ugly head, the woodland has been used a lot more than normal and some areas are looking very worn. I have no doubt this area will recover, but we have had a few complaints of large braches being snapped from trees and discarded. Whether it’s a child wanting to build a den, a rambler on a mini hike or a dog walker getting their daily exercise, please be aware that this space is for everyone and do not cause significant damage. n As we look forward, I’m hopeful that the end of lockdown is in sight. Please be mindful that not everyone has had the same lockdown experience and it may take some people a long time to get back to ‘normal’, whatever that is. Please be respectful of others and stay safe.

ife is so often difficult, especially now with so much uncertainty, so many rule changes, so much sadness and grief and not being able to have the same human interactions to make the situation more bearable. But we have choices to make and so often it is those choices that can shape our outlook on life. We can choose to find positives in a situation, however hopeless; or we can get bogged down with what’s going wrong. We can choose joy and happiness, rather than negativity and pain. We can choose to live our lives in the moment, live for the day, make the best of what we have. This isn’t going to be easy and it’s not always that simple. It takes time and effort to train our minds to think in that positive way, and often it can start just with a small, simple decision to smile, or to go for a walk, or to reach out to a friend.

I notice with my own family, if I am in a bad mood, then my negativity rubs off on them and my children pick up on it in the way that children do, and this affects their behaviour too. And in these times it takes a conscious decision from me to choose to be happy, to choose to be positive, to choose to find joy in what is happening around me; and together we can move forward rather than being stuck in a negative cycle. But be gentle on yourself, it won’t happen overnight, it won’t always be straightforward. By making small, seemingly insignificant choices to live in a more positive way, your life will be blessed, and you will find joy in the small, seemingly insignificant things – and any amount of joy should be grabbed hold of and not let go! Even in the darkest times there is still a hope we can hold on to, a light in the darkness, a promise that things will not be like this forever.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

with Transition Keynsham

Spare our beautiful weeds

I have been reading a book called Silent Spring. Published in 1962 by US scientist Rachel Carson, it inspired the modern environmental movement and sparked environmental protection laws across the world. Carson wrote that “the beauty of the living world I was trying to save has always been uppermost in my mind — that, and anger at the senseless, brutish things that were being done”. Her focus was on pesticides – many of which (like DDT) are now banned after scientists discovered just how poisonous they are to people and wildlife. Other chemicals, like glyphosate (Roundup), are still used to suppress weeds on farms, verges, in parks and gardens. In 2019, a US court found Monsanto, Roundup’s maker, responsible for the cancer suffered by a regular user of glyphosate. The company denies any link but had to pay out damages worth £61 million. A recent Canadian study showed that many of the weeds glyphosate targets grow resistant to it, and yet much of the wildlife that relies on those weeds are killed. It found that up to 40% of biodiversity is lost where glyphosate is sprayed – wildlife

that we all rely on to pollinate our crops. B&NES Council is phasing out glyphosate by April next year, in line with its declaration of a nature emergency. It will tackle weeds in ways that don’t kill birds and insects – manual hoeing, mechanical removal and steam treatment. Glyphosate will still be used on Giant Hogweed and Japanese Knotweed, although studies show that it isn’t effective on the latter. Over many years, we have been encouraged to look upon a weed as something that must be eradicated, and that nothing should be ‘out of place’ in our gardens. I suspect that it’s the very companies peddling weed killers that have been telling us this. I believe we need to change our mindsets. When I see a bee settle on a dandelion on my lawn, it makes me smile, not reach for the poison. Carson wrote that “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” I urge everyone reading this to tolerate your weeds – or if you really can’t, then do battle with your trowel, not the spray bottle. n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

We can all help our tourism sector to recover THE West of England is truly amazing, as my first month as Metro Mayor has reminded me again and again. With Summer finally here, I’ve enjoyed speaking to a huge range of people and businesses vital to our tourism industry. I had a great time at ‘We the Curious’ playing football with robots and seeing a TARDIS, plus I stuck my neck out and met some giraffes at Wild Place. I rode an e-bike in Bath. The fantastic Julian House is buying a fleet of these, thanks to a grant from the West of England Combined Authority, which I now lead, and they plan to get tourists on the bikes to create vital new income for the charity. I discovered another way tourists can see Bath too: by paddle board! Wild Swim Bike Run is a small business that’s making a splash. Run by ex-military man Darroch Davidson, they’ve also benefited from West of England Combined Authority cash and are looking to take on more staff. Now, I have to admit my paddle boarding experience was a bit wobbly! But wobbly probably also reflects the wider mood in the tourism industry. Launching a new events guide for our

region with Visit Bristol and Bath, I found out more about the effect of the pandemic on our tourism industry. Over 3.8 million people used to visit annually, spending over £900m, and that meant local jobs and prosperity - around 8% of local employment is reliant on visitors. The West of England Combined Authority has a number of important schemes to support our tourism sector. I have pledged to double the £9 million covid recovery fund to target those local businesses hardest hit by the pandemic. Then there is a scheme helping people match their skills to new jobs and our successful programme for those creative people working in the cultural sector - musicians, artists and tour guides. Worryingly, though, we still haven’t seen the Government’s Tourism Recovery Plan; great swathes of this sector have been excluded from current Government schemes. One thing we can all do is support our local tourism attractions and pop into cafes and restaurants. After all, as the government keeps changing the countries where we are allowed to holiday in, in a way designed to perplex,

Metro Mayor

I’m not sure that many people will be booking overseas breaks. But we are so lucky with what’s on our doorstep. We also need to talk up our area as a brilliant place to visit. And that means all of our villages and beautiful market towns, too. I was in Keynsham laying a paving slab as part of my plan to invest in our high streets because I don’t want people just to visit Bristol and Bath, wonderful as they are, and miss out on the equally brilliant bits in between. We need a tourism strategy that brings jobs and opportunities to our whole region.

RAILWAY enthusiasts were in for a treat when three different rail tours – all operated by Locomotive Services Limited - passed through Keynsham. The charter specials were all photographed by Oliver Trueman, aged 16, who kindly agreed to share his photos here for Keynsham Voice readers. The first passed through the town on Wednesday June 9, being a pair of Class 47 diesel locomotives (numbers 47593 'Galloway Princess' leading, and 47614 on the rear), working from Solihull to Bristol Temple Meads. Oliver took this photo at Durley Lane footbridge, near Keynsham Cemetery. The second, on Saturday June 12, was a more modern Intercity 125 (power cars numbered 43046 and 43055) decorated as the Midland Pullman, working a Bristol-to-Carlisle dining train. The photo was taken at Keynsham Station. The last was on Wednesday June 16, when former LMS Royal Scot class loco 46100 'Royal Scot' roared through the town's station, with recent visitor 47593 'Galloway Princess' on the rear, heading towards Portsmouth Harbour from Bristol.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

T

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

HE Minister for Welfare Delivery has written to all MPs as regards the extension of the Covid Local Support Grant scheme. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government has provided an unprecedented package of support for individuals, families, communities and businesses who need financial help at this critical time. The Covid Local Support Grant (previously known as the Covid Winter Grant Scheme) has enabled local authorities in England to support families across the country who are struggling with the cost of food and utility bills as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The programme has run from 1st December 2020 with a total investment of over £269 million thus far. By 16th April 2021, local authorities had made almost 6.3 million awards. I am delighted to report that the Covid Local Support Grant arrangements will be extended

for a final time, with a further investment of £160 million, to cover the period up to 30th September 2021. This temporary support is being extended beyond the planned ending of restrictions to help families as the economy recovers and the vaccine rollout continues. Well-paid work is the best route out of poverty, hence why the Government has formulated a Plan for Jobs. The Covid Local Support Grant is in addition to the £220 million Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which has been scaled up to cover the whole of England across the major school holidays in 2021, including this summer. The HAF will provide disadvantaged children across the country with healthy meals and stimulating activities. l If you require any further information or assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch: www.jacobreesmogg.com / jacob. reesmogg.mp@parliament.uk

Recycling fees put on hold

PLANNED charges for rubble, plasterboard and tyres at recycling centres in Bath & North East Somerset have been put on hold. B&NES Council will look at finding alternative savings to balance its budget. The charges - due to have come in on May 24 - would have seen residents pay £2 to dispose of a bag of rubble, £4 for a bag of plasterboard and £3.50 for car tyres, but with residents still being able to dispose of their household and garden waste free of charge at all three recycling centres. The decision to put the charges on hold follows concerns raised by residents and parish councils particularly about the unintended consequences of introducing the fees - and also a government consultation on consistency in recycling services across the country, which could mean any charges introduced having to be removed at a later date. Council leader Councillor Kevin Guy made the announcement at a cabinet meeting on May 24.

Community orchard cash will bear fruit A PROJECT to establish a community orchard in Corston has won new funding. The orchard will offer a wildlife haven in which people can enjoy nature, with the resulting fruit to be shared by the community. It is one of the first projects to successfully bid for a grant to enhance their local area from Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Ward Councillor Empowerment Fund 2021/22. Each year, the council provides each of its ward councillors with £1,000 to award local grants to projects that address concerns or needs of a local area. Councillor Duncan Hounsell (Saltford) awarded his £1,000 allocation to Corston Parish Council to go towards the Corston Community Orchard. The money will help pay for a habitat and archaeological survey, trees, equipment, tools and outdoor furniture. Councillor Duncan Hounsell said: “As Saltford ward councillor, I am delighted to give my ward development grant to the Corston Community Orchard project. “This exciting project combines heritage, bio-diversity, sustainable living and community engagement.” The empowerment fund supports voluntary and community organisations,

parish and town councils and other partners to help meet the council’s core priorities – tackling the climate and nature emergency and giving people a bigger say. This year’s fund opened on April 1 and will remain open until January 31, 2022. For

Chance to see what Fear Hall has to offer

Food bank extends delivery-only service

NOW that restrictions on indoor gatherings have been partially relaxed, many of the activity groups at Keynsham’s Fear Hall, on the High Street near the bottom of Charlton Road, have restarted. The hall, well-known to generations of local people, is running an open day on Saturday July 10 to showcase some of its regular activities. While some people have been keen to return to their pre-pandemic lifestyles, others are understandably reluctant to socialise or have found other interests, so some groups need to recruit new members. The open day runs from 10am to 2pm, and visitors will be able to learn about activities including dance and ballet classes, social dancing, table tennis, short mat bowls, pilates, yoga and many others. Anyone interested in hiring the hall will be able to see the

KEYNSHAM Food Bank is extending its delivery-only service until October because of Covid-19. It may revise its decision if the situation changes. The food bank stopped allowing collections last year to avoid clients having to come out during lockdown and to protect the health of volunteers. During the last fiscal year, it supported 2,208 requests for support for those in food crisis. Just under 50% were children, almost double the previous year. Already this fiscal year, 344 have been supported and over 50% are children. The food bank is supported by Keynsham and District Dial a Ride, which has been carrying out the physical deliveries since the original lockdown. Richard Dyson, of the hall’s management committee, said: “The Fear Hall has played a big part in the life of the town for many years, but there are now many newcomers who don’t realise how much it has to offer. This is a chance to call in and meet some of our groups.”

n KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME

It's great to be out and about

W

ITH the easing of Covid restrictions, Keynsham Walkers are Welcome were able to restart their walking programme, which had been dormant for almost a year. To make up for lost time, we increased the frequency of walks to every two weeks. We already have two under our belt, both fairly gentle to get everyone back in the habit of walking. The first, on Sunday May 23 in lovely walking conditions, was a circular walk to the Humpty Dumps, off Durley Lane. Uncertain what response we would get, we were heartened when 23 people turned up. The walk took in the recently cleared section of public footpath at the end of The Avenue, through a tunnel under the railway track which hardly anyone knew about, and then picked up the newly tarmacked path around the perimeter of Somerdale. Branching off this level path, we crossed what is purported to be the oldest bridge in Keynsham

The view of woodland in Bitton on a new route for the group on the Roman track leading to the villa by the cemetery. Continuing along Durley Lane, we climbed up to the Humpty Dumps, crossed the railway track and came back to Keynsham via the perimeter of the rugby club playing fields. It was another social walk, which left everyone looking forward to the next one. This took place on June 6, again starting from the Memorial Park café and again with 23 walkers, this time led by club stalwart Derek Butler. Heading in the opposite direction to the first walk, we

picked Monarchs Way towards Bitton, crossing two flowerfilled fields, leaving the main path to enter the newly planted woodland. This was a new walk for the group. Circumnavigating the woods, we returned via the same route, veering off to pass the marina, getting back to the park 90 minutes later. Another social walk which was appreciated by all. We have a programme of walks for the summer, which can be found on the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome website, or contact Dave on 07866440968.

KEYNSHAM WI

We're looking forward to a brighter future AS with other organisations, it's been a very difficult year for Keynsham WI. Sadly, we lost our president, Maureen Gerrish, in February due to non-Covidrelated illness. The vice president, Diana Allez, stepped up to take the president’s role with the backing of the committee. All members were given Easter cards and gifts including sunflower seeds. The lady who grows the tallest sunflower will be presented with a trophy in Maureen’s memory. We have conquered Zoom and held several interesting events, including our AGM. We have had talks and demonstrations on decorating Easter biscuits, gardening from the head gardener at the Priory Hotel in Bath, and sustainable clothing. We've run sweepstakes and Zoom chats on the Great British Bake Off and the Sewing Bee (ongoing). The walking group has restarted and members enjoyed an interesting walk around Saltford (see picture). A summer party has been booked at Saltford Golf Club and we look forward to getting back to our monthly meetings. Bonny Price

Dragons and damsels are taking flight with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

I

t is amazing how wonderful water is for wildlife. Take a trip to the seaside and you’re sure to see some gulls. Visit a park with a pond and you’ll no doubt see some ducks. Where there is water, there certainly is life! And watching dragonflies dart among the plants on a riverbank or at the edge of a wildlife pond is one of the joys of summer. Dragonflies and their close relatives, damselflies - known collectively as Odonata, meaning “toothed jaw” - are beautiful and highly predatory insects that are mainly found in freshwater wetland areas. As larvae, they live underwater (some dragonflies for as long as seven years), emerging as winged adults in spring and summer. And a warm sunny July day is perfect for observing these prehistoriclooking insects. If you are lucky you may spot a larva crawling out of the water up a stem of vegetation. Here its skin splits along the back and the adult insect emerges, a lengthy procedure

Beautiful Demoiselle, left, one of the damselfly family, with wings against the body. Right, the female Emperor dragonfly “ovipositing” with wings at right angles Photos: Martin Farrell leaving behind the outer carapace attached to stems and leaves, before unfurling and allowing its wings to spread and stiffen. And then comes its maiden flight. Adult Odonata spend much of their active time hunting for other flying insects, capturing their food mid-air using long hair-lined forelegs to “net” their prey. Once mature (this takes a few days after emerging) they also spend a lot of time in courtship and mating, and if you have a pond in your garden you will notice damselflies linked together with the female inserting her eggs onto vegetation just under the surface of the water using her female

organ or “ovipositor”. So how do you tell the difference between a dragonfly and a damselfly? Well, dragonflies are generally larger, more robust, with bigger bodies and when resting they hold their unequal wings at right angles to their body, unlike the damselflies whose equally sized wings are pressed along the body. If you manage to have close look you will see that dragonfly eyes are set close together whereas damselflies have their eyes spaced apart. And flight patterns are different too, with damselflies having a more fluttering flight than the speedy and purposeful dragonfly.

You will also notice if you stop and look that many species of Odonata are creatures of habit, either perching in the same place repeatedly or hovering in a similar location. It is encouraging that Odonata species are faring well in the UK, benefiting from both climate change and less pollution of our waterways. And you can do your bit by installing a wildlife pond (no fish!) in your garden. Once established, it will soon be attracting damselflies and dragonflies along with all manner of other water creatures. Kathy Farrell

Grow Wilder is a wonder! OUR members were taken on a guided tour of the Grow Wilder (formerly Feed Bristol) AWT site by project manager Matt Cracknell, writes our field trip officer Liz Wintle. The site has sustainable, organic, educational and regenerative policies with wildflower patches everywhere. Mammals abound, in particular harvest mice, stoats, badgers and hedgehogs, and kestrels patrol overhead. There are several natural ponds to ensure that the local amphibians and insects have all that they need. Meadow ants have colonised an area by one of the ponds. In the fruit and nut tree area were Rosa rugosa, which is grown for its hips, buckthorn and blackberry for their berries, hazel for nuts and elder for flowers and berries.

Members enjoying a tour of the Grow Wilder site, with the aid of project manager Matt Cracknell. Right, rose chafer beetle on corky-fruited water-dropwort Photos: Rita Andrews We saw many iridescent-green rose chafer beetles on the rose, and also on the corky-fruited waterdropwort at the roadside verge; obviously they both suited the chafer's pollen diet! There is a harvest mouse nest in the rose hedge and we saw lots of mullein moth caterpillars on their host plant. Surrounding the planted veg beds in the “big field” were many pollinator- and predator-friendly plants.

Back at the wildflower nursery section, Shaun took over to talk about their Living Seed Bank or Ark. They sow 50-100 plants of each wildflower obtained from outside, then collect the seed to sow in following years, thus ensuring that the plants they sell and plant out are all locally sourced. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

New funding will help to support survivors IT'S been a busy first few weeks in office and, as I’ve toured the patch, I feel honoured to have met some incredibly dedicated, diligent and caring officers, staff and teams doing some great work within our communities to keep people safe. A key role of the Police and Crime Commissioner is to be the voice of local people, and I want to understand your concerns, listen to your ideas and learn how best I can support. My initial focus has been to meet with police officers and staff, to understand the issues faced by our policing family and the communities they serve. As this continues, my engagement will expand to meet with residents, partners and MPs on a weekly basis, from July onwards. I am proud to be working on your behalf and am committed to delivering the pledges I set

out in my election manifesto. Your needs are central to my work, and hearing from you is very important. As a result, this summer I will be launching a consultation survey focusing on what you’d like from your police service, which will then inform our Police and Crime Plan. More information about this survey will be on our website in the coming weeks. My team and I have gathered much momentum and have set our early priority work areas that include the Police and Crime Plan, recruiting a new Chief Constable and other important roles, reviewing governance and scrutiny structures to improve openness and transparency in our police force and reviewing the effectiveness of police stations and buildings across the area. I will continue to update you as this work continues and

progresses. I’m also delighted to share with you that we’ve secured one of our largest funding achievements for victim services, with £1 million in funding to support survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. This will fund 23 independent domestic violence advisor (IDVA) roles and eight independent sexual violence advisor (ISVA) specialist roles who will work alongside victim services, partners and local authorities. A number of these new IDVAs and ISVAs will be specialist roles to ensure everyone who is a victim of domestic abuse or violence receives the support they need. Such specialisms include working with black and minority ethnic victims, elderly victims, children and young people, victims in rural communities, victims of

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford economic abuse, victims with complex needs, male victims, LGBT+ victims and victims with mental health issues and illnesses. This is one of our largest funding achievements for victim services and I look forward to supporting the work of the new ISVAs and IDVAs.

High Street waste of cash

KEYNSHAM High Street’s ‘new look’ is a truly pathetic waste of money. I note the appointment of Kevin Guy as Bath & North East Somerset Council’s new leader. And what would you say his top priority for Keynsham is? Is it a radical plan to revitalise Keynsham as an attractive shopping hub? Or to introduce a free-flowing traffic system with free parking to welcome back motorists who once enjoyed leisure time in a once-vibrant High Street? Not quite! His number one priority is ‘climate emergency’. And we now have a ‘clean air zone’ in Bath. Another woke, minorityappeasing council. There is nothing wrong with the air. It is just another money-making scheme, a political bandwagon. We can assume that Councillor Guy and his select cabinet of greens, eco-mentalists and cyclists will continue to promote their grandiose projects to the detriment of us all. It is a strange phenomenon, but recent government acts concerning cyclists and safety have completed alienated motorists and cyclists. In fact, they have an intolerant dislike of each other. I would strongly recommend that government officials pay a visit to Lake Garda in Italy. This will illustrate how well both groups are able to co-exist in a really social environment with no government interference. Allan Peters

It was not the Orient Express I was aghast to read on Page 9 of your June publication that the "Orient Express" passed through Keynsham in May. The locomotive was clearly 35028 "Clan Line", a Merchant Navy Class which never pulled the Orient Express, with a rake of British Pullman coaches (as displayed on the front of the locomotive). This service was the Belmond British Pullman, certainly not the Orient Express. J Hill, Somerdale Editor’s note: Belmond states that its Belmond British Pullman “forms a crucial part of the Venice SimplonOrient Express on the train’s British journey.”

Old call box is a real lifeline A DEFIBRILLATOR has been set up in a former phone box in Saltford. Located between the river and the BristolBath Railway Path in the heart of the ‘old village’ conservation area, the new defibrillator is in a prime position should it be needed. The ex-BT phone box, dating from the 1930s and of the iconic ‘K6’ design, originally stood across the road from the Bird in Hand pub. It was formally adopted by Saltford Parish Council in 2017 and plans for its future purpose started soon after. Following conservation and restoration work, both off-site and at its new location on the pub’s premises, the phone box is now back to its former glory. Work included a creating a new door, sandblasting and repainting, and installing new glass – as well as electrics to support the new defibrillator. The project was co-ordinated and jointly funded by the parish council, the pub and Saltford Marina. Local resident Jamie Pattimore was appointed to carry out some of the work, and as much of the labour as possible was completed by parish council chair Chris Warren, with help from other councillors. The Bird in Hand funded and fitted the new defibrillator, at a location where many people come to enjoy walking, cycling and river activities. Councillor Warren said: “We have had so many positive comments from residents already. “As well as its new purpose as a defibrillator station, we also have plans for a volunteer to decorate it seasonally.”

Colin Baker, landlord at the Bird in Hand, added: “Staff have been trained to use the defibrillator but there are instructions so anyone can use it at any time.” The parish council adopted a second former phone box in 2019, on the junction of Norman Road and A4 Bath Road. It too will be restored in due course, with plans for its future use being considered. A list of all six defibrillators in Saltford can be found on the ‘Visitor Information’ page of the parish council website at www. saltfordparishcouncil.gov.uk

Four police dogs and their handlers were joined by fire dog Buddy during Urban Search and Rescue training at Hicks Gate

Buddy helps police pals to keep paw and order POLICE dogs were put through their paces at Hicks Gate fire station in Keynsham. Handlers practised working at height on the fire station’s training tower during Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) training. The exercise was designed to help the dogs with ascending and descending, particularly useful when the emergency services are called to a rescue at a height or in collapsed buildings. Four police colleagues and their service dogs, all Spaniel cross-breeds, joined Avon Fire & Rescue Service dog Buddy at the training session. The Avon and Somerset police dogs are trained in forensic search techniques, victim recovery and specialist skills including explosives detection. Dogs were harnessed to their handlers, and each pair abseiled down the side of the training tower. The team also practised ascension with the dogs, to get them used to the sensation of being suspended in a harness. The dogs were remarkably calm, given that this was their first attempt at such training,

Fire dog Buddy helped his canine colleagues to use the training tower at Hicks Gate fire station and exercise director PC Clive Bush was pleased with this “good example of collaborative training.” Fire dog Buddy and his handler, Firefighter (FF) Martin Tully, took part in the exercise,

completing the activities with great form. FF Tully said: “Buddy has gone from strength to strength and is a much-loved member of the team at Hicks Gate. I’m really pleased with how he’s done

today. He’s really a part of the family here and at home.” Tail always wagging, Buddy ascended and descended the training tower with ease, before parading his ball around with joy when he had finished the task.

Mural's pride of place at the Pocket Park

Somerdale School pupils, above and below, have made a bug hotel hat a busy time Keynsham In Bloom has been having! The mural in the Pocket Park is complete and we are grateful to Nick for such beautiful work. The grass has been cut after No Mow May and we now have a compost bin to make our own mulch for the flower beds. We are also fitting a water butt and bird box. The bug hotels, one for the cemetery and one for the Pocket Park, are complete and ready for residents to occupy, thanks to the efforts of children at St Keyna and Somerdale schools. Our gardens at Keynsham railway station have received a wonderful donation from GWR, and our volunteers will be busy planting up the gardens with extra flowers to impress the judges from South West In Bloom on July 23. Now a cry for help. Although there is a water butt in the Pocket Park and at the station, we need our Keynsham friends to keep our thirsty tubs hydrated during the dry weather. If you work in the High Street and notice the plants are drooping, please drizzle a little water on their roots. Gavin Hardy, Royal Horticultural Society outreach worker, is running a virtual tour of his wildflower project at 6pm on July 8. To receive the link, email Keynshaminbloom@ icloud.com. It will certainly be worth watching.

W The new mural that is now brightening up the Pocket Park, thanks to Nick's hard work

n WHAT'S ON

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Crooked Herring L.C. Tyler L.C. Tyler is known for his historical crime novels, but he has also written a delightful crime series featuring Ethelred Tressider. Crime writer Ethelred is shocked when his old rival, Henry Holiday, turns up on his doorstep and confesses to the murder of another author, Crispin Vynall, while drunk on New Year’s Eve. Henry asks Ethelred to discretely investigate, but as far as Ethelred is concerned, no one has reported Crispin missing or a murder being committed. With his persistent literary agent Elsie Thirkettle joining the task, who knows what might crop up? The stories in this series are very funny, with great characters and little digs at other crime books and authors – I am particularly looking forward to Ten Little Herrings set in a stamp collectors’ conference!

Orfeo Richard Powers Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014, Richard Powers has created a beautiful story interwoven with a passion for classic music. Seventy-year-old composer Peter Els gets a visit from the police after his amateur science lab and latest experiment – to extract music from the most surprising of places - attract the attraction of Homeland Security. Panicked by the raid, Peter flees

and awaits evidence to clear his name. However, an internetfuelled hysteria breaks out and Peter is labelled “Bioterrorist Bach”. This results in Peter embarking on a cross-country visit one last time, before he is caught, to see those people he loves and those who shaped his musical journey. And through their help, Peter comes up with a plan to turn his problem with Homeland Security into a work that will reawaken a whole new audience to the wonderful sounds and symphonies. The Valentines: Far from Perfect Holly Smale From the author of Geek Girl, this is next in the series of The Valentines, the famous sisters, and this is Faith’s story. Faith Valentine has it all – fame, money and extraordinary beauty where a change of hairstyle can generate millions of “likes”. However, all she really wants is a quiet life away from the spotlight. No one seems to ask if Faith wants this life and she feels her family expect-ations are crushing her. Perfection – what perfection! As with all of Holly Smale’s books, this is very well written and a really enjoyable summer read.

Mum's World

The Beginning of the End

Mum wanted something reminiscent Of pastimes, of experiences Of life's rough and tumble A conversation, whose vibe, when translated Evoked colourful lively memories Such as the glass chandelier In blue, amber and green That set the tone Upon entering mother's house So many books, a personal library Where faces peer out from the shelves While the sofa is scattered with cushions Glass cabinets full of bowler-hatted frogs Mum would say "I wanted to create a feel of sophisticated glamour" While entertaining her imaginary friend For whom she kept a certain chair "Would she be comfortable" mum often asked Mum had created an imaginary world A world of thirties and forties movie stars Where she would lose herself But she was still mum! More greetings as we all say ‘Hi’ Emotional tears, some happy sighs. Allowed to meet a few more friends There’s many ways we now can mend. But still the bug around us lurks Which sadly gives us all a jerk. While many people remain tense We must all practise common sense. But on the brighter side of things There’re many ways to spread our wings. Enjoy ourselves, but stay aware Keep giving to those in need of care. Academy's STEM workshops aim to inspire teenagers

The scientists of tomorrow

MORE young people are considering careers in science as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, a British Science Association survey has found. With this in mind, IKB Academy in Keynsham, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), is holding workshops this month to enthuse teenagers. The computing/design events, organised in same-school bubbles to be Covid-safe, involve Year 9 students in designing a car and then using microbits to programme the car around a track. Principal Debbie Gibbs said: “We are delighted to be running these STEM workshops as we have really missed being able to invite prospective students into IKB during the pandemic. “Science has been at the forefront of our fight against Covid. It is great to see the

Students will be programming a microbit car like this to travel around a track next generation of scientists, computer scientists and engineers putting their problemsolving skills to use in this project.” IKB is open to students aged 14 to 19, with entry in Years 10 and 12. Spaces are available for

September and the school is running one-to-one meetings – which can be virtual – to talk through the opportunities. One of IKB’s many success stories, Roland Whiteley, returned to the school last month to talk to sixth-formers about his educational journey. He came from a single-parent family with a disabled mum and flunked Year 12 at a sixth form in Exeter, joining IKB to repeat the year. Despite getting a D in product design in his first year, with hard work and determination he went on to achieve two A-stars and an A in his A-levels in 2018 and is now in his third year studying engineering at Oxford. Mrs Gibbs said: “Roland has single-handedly inspired our Year 12s. To say I am proud of him is an understatement.” To find out more about IKB Academy, visit www. ikbacademy.org.uk

Aldi seeks site for store in Keynsham ALDI has announced it is on the lookout for a site for a store in Keynsham. The UK’s fifth largest supermarket has been expanding in recent years, opening around one new store a week on average. As well as Keynsham, it is looking for sites in Bath, Bristol and 11 other locations in Somerset. Aldi, which now has more than 900 stores across the UK, is

looking for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for development. It says each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces, ideally on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access. Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK, said: “We have been investing in

Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand.” The full list of locations it is targeting in the area is: Bath, Bristol, Chard, Cheddar, Frome, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Nailsea, Taunton, Wellington, Wells, Weston-super-Mare, Wincanton and Yeovil.

Shortage of drivers hits bin collections A RECRUITMENT drive for bin lorry drivers in Keynsham has been launched to help tackle delays in rubbish collections. Recycling collection routes are being prioritised across Bath and North East Somerset and the council has drafted in extra loaders to help improve collections in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, qualified LGV drivers are urged to consider driver/loader vacancies in Keynsham. Loader roles could also lead to the opportunity to train to become an LGV driver, so anyone looking to begin a driving career is encouraged to apply. Search ‘vacancies’ at https:// beta.bathnes.gov.uk/ The Road Haulage Association said that the national driver shortage was of “catastrophic proportions”. Covid-19 delays to training and testing, and EU drivers leaving the UK have worsened the shortage. The problem has been compounded by continued heavy volumes of waste and recycling. Councillor David Wood, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. “If we have not picked up your road’s kerbside collection on the day we should have, please leave it out until the next day and we will return for it. “Please check service updates for your neighbourhood on our website and keep an eye on our social media channels. Thank you for your patience.” Any waste collection disruptions are updated on the website and can be viewed at https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/ waste-disruptions. Crews will be working later than normal so usual collection times may alter. If your road does not appear on the service disruption page, you can report a missed bin collection at https://beta. bathnes.gov.uk/report-missedbin-collection

BRISTOL BASEBALL CLUB

THE Bristol Badgers secured two wins over SW Rebeldes in their British Baseball Federation (BBF) AAA double header to cap off a bumper weekend of baseball for the club on June 12 and 13. The Badgers beat last year’s champions 6-3 and 9-8 at the Somerdale Pavilion, Keynsham, with pitchers Mike Osbourn and Luke Claflin making a major contributions to both victories. Mike Osbourn pitched a masterclass in the first game, limiting a strong Rebeldes line-up to just three runs while getting good run support from the Badgers line-up. In the second game, Claflin pitched eight innings, striking out 15 Rebeldes players, and then hit a walk-off single to secure the victory for the Bristol team. Left fielder George Braeger and catcher Sampson Yuen both had multiple hits in the second match. “It was a real pleasure to see Mike and Luke in action,” said Badgers player coach Rhodri Theaker. “I was lucky to be able to catch Mike in the first game, and his control and movement was outstanding.” The Badgers’ success followed the second round of the national women’s tournament the day before, which saw the club host six teams from across the country. The Bobcats staged two dramatic comebacks against London Mayhem and the Sheffield Bruins but lost both games to great catches which ended the Bristol team’s fightbacks. The tournament also saw teams from Telford, Cambridge and Slough playing six games on the day. “We are very proud of the Bobcats, who showed great

Double delight for battling Badgers fighting spirit, and without the two catches, we might have won both games,” said Molly Willcox, co-manager of the Bristol Bobcats. “It was fantastic to see around 100 people playing and supporting the teams who travelled to play some great baseball.” The Sunday also saw the club's A teams in action in the BBF/South West and Wales Baseball League (SWWBL). The Bats travelled to Cornwall to take on the Claycutters and came away with 27-15 and 25-11 victories, with outfielder Billy Garrett hitting his first career home run. Also at Somerdale on the Sunday, the Buccaneers took on

division favourites the Cardiff Merlins. Despite losing 17-10 and 17-0 to the much-vaunted Cardiff pitchers, the Buccaneers put up a strong fight on a scorching afternoon, stealing 19 bases. The Brunels were away to the Taunton Muskets and split their double header. The Muskets won the first 1817 but the Brunels rallied to win the second 18-16 on the back of aggressive base running and solid hitting. Six Brunels had multiple hits in the first game, providing support to pitchers Declan Ryan and Becky Cottrell. In the second game, starting pitcher Jo Sutcliffe got good run support over his four

innings before Michael Comport struck out the final three Muskets to secure the win. “The team competes right up until the final out, and every player makes a positive contribution to every game,” said Michael Buser, catcher and assistant manager of the Brunels. “It’s a real joy to see players like Matt Barter, who had a couple of hits, and Rachel Everett, who was solid at first base, improve game by game.” Club chairman Richard Evans said: “I think we just witnessed the best ever weekend of baseball on and off the field, made possible by all the volunteers who came to help and the team at Somerdale. “It’s always exciting to see the results come in, and the wins are always good. We were honoured to host the women’s tournament and see the Bobcats giving their best and then on Sunday winning five of our eight games.”

FRY CLUB JFC

Caring girls show support for children's hospice THESE girls from Fry Club JFC are proudly displaying a new training kit after completing a sponsored dribble around Somerdale playing fields in Keynsham. They will be playing in the under-8s and 9s in the coming season, which starts in September. Some of the money was for the training kit and training equipment, while £630 - half of the sum raised - went to Children's Hospice South West. The girls’ manager, Mark Grinter, said: “On the kit we have decided to have the Children's Hospice logo instead of a sponsor, and at every game that the under8s and 9s play this year they will be collecting for the hospice. And when Covid restrictions are lifted, we are hopeful of doing other fundraising events. “We believe it is important for the girls to realise that some children are not as fortunate as they are and are unable to play football and do other things they may take for granted.”

n FRY CLUB VETERANS

We've won the cup! FRY Club Veterans took the Corinthian Premier Cup silverware home after they beat Real St George by the solitary goal in a fiercely contested fixture in North Bristol. Having overcame Nailsea and Yate Town respectively in the early rounds, the team booked their place in the final in what is their debut season. Led by seasoned Fry’s stalwart Jeff Copp, the Keynsham-based side thought they had gone ahead inside the first quarter when the evergreen Matt Grimes rounded the St George keeper, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Despite both sides offering ageing legs, the fixture was played at pace, with further chances at both ends during the first period.

Fry’s lost Joe Wescott and Chris Dauncey through injury early in the second half. But they overcame this setback to take the lead with 20 minutes left. Matt Crewe delivered a terrific dead-ball into the opposing box and the reliable Grimes was on hand to nod the ball home with aplomb. Substantial St George pressure followed with a barrage of attacks, but goalkeeper James Pearce was equal to it, pulling off a number of fine saves to ensure the cup returned to Cadbury’s. Team: Pearce, Lukins (Tokley 45), Chaffey, Copp (c), Davies, O’Brien (Dauncey 45), Crewe, Elston (Bates 45), Reed (Jake Wescott 45), Grimes, Richards (Joe Wescott 45) Star Man: Ed Davies

Paul Cummins lifts the Somerset County Over 50s Walking Football Trophy Photo courtesy of Chris Ashton

KEYNSHAM Walking Football are champions of the Somerset County FA Over 50s League. The fourth and final round of matches was played on June 6 at the AJN Stadium, with the home side just two points clear of three-times champions Weston. Their first match against Weston's second string, the Reds, was a close affair but they edged a 1-0 victory, whilst Weston Whites had been held to a draw by Frome. With Keynsham's lead now four points, they faced Frome themselves and gained another narrow 1-0 win. The crunch match was third up. A win would ensure the championship but, even with Weston Whites reduced by a player for the final two minutes, they were held to a 0-0 draw. That meant

victory against Peasedown would clinch the title, and Keynsham quickly rushed into a two-goal lead. A defensive slip let Peasedown back into the match and gave the numerous home supporters some nervous minutes. However, a late third goal sealed the win that the home fans had been cheering for. The final game against Frome ended 1-1 but Keynsham were already champions by then. Aaron Clements of Somerset FA presented the trophy to the home team in front of their supporters, and a difficult Covid-interrupted season had finally come to an end. Final points tally (from 20 games): Keynsham 45, Weston Whites 41, Peasedown Albion 25, Frome 23, Shepton 12, Weston Reds 12

n SALTFORD TENNIS Men and ladies top their tables SALTFORD Lawn Tennis Club is going from strength to strength, with membership numbers increasing for the second year running. It offers plenty of opportunity to play tennis by providing five club sessions, a singles ladder, league play, easy booking of courts and coaching for all abilities. Coaching, which is open to members and non-members, is run by the club’s two level-3 coaches. Although the popular sessions are much in demand, at present there are vacancies for adult cardio tennis and tennis Xpress.

Both the ladies’ and men’s league first teams are top of their divisions, while the second teams are also proving competitive, lying mid table in their divisions. Lots of events are planned for the summer, the first being a parent/family member and child fun session on July 10, open to members and non-members. During August there will be a taster week for prospective new members. For details on how to join the club, enrol for coaching or enter events, please search for the club’s website.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

Sun shines as coaches encourage newcomers COACHES at Keynsham Bowling Club welcomed newcomers to their green in Keynsham Park so they could try their hand at the sport. The Bowls England initiative prompted 22 people to sign up for an hour slot on the day during a glorious May bank holiday weekend. Sisters Karina and Karen, from Keynsham, came to the 10am slot with their husbands Richard and Simon and their cousins Fiona and Glenn, from Exeter, who were visiting for the weekend. “We thoroughly enjoyed it” seemed to be the consensus as they mastered the bias on the woods aiming for the jack. At 11am the coaches were joined by the Chocolate Quarter Six - Pat, Mick, Janet, Carol, Isobel and Roger - who after bowling sat in the sun enjoying a drink from the bar.

In the afternoon it was the turn of Don and Pat, who moved to Keynsham about four years ago and appeared very interested in considering playing a new sport. All were offered a series of coaching sessions, and it will be interesting to see how many take up the offer. Our men were drawn at home to Long Ashton in the first round of the National Top Club Competition. There were five different disciplines – the 2 bowl fours, 2 bowl triples, 3 bowl pairs, 4 bowl singles and 2 bowl singles. Unfortunately Keynsham only won on two and therefore look forward to doing better in 2022. The first round of the Lloyd Trophy fixtures were played, with our men being well beaten away to Alveston. In the Bristol and District League played on a Thursday evening, things are looking much

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB n May 27: Following a pointless 35-52 defeat at home to Avonvale, Frys looked to halt their losing streak when visiting Bradley Stoke. The home side gained the early advantage, with rink 3 taking a commanding lead before comfortably winning. Rink 1 looked to score points for Frys after overcoming an early deficit, but a late comeback aided by a fluky shot from the Bradley Stoke skip on the penultimate end left Frys 2 back and they only picked up 1 on the final end. Despite trailing by 8 shots with 3 ends left, Frys closed the gap to 3 after some good bowls for the final

Coaches from Keynsham Bowling Club who welcomed visitors rosier for our men. The A team are top of Division 2, with the B team top of Division 3 and the C team in third place. Our ladies have been rolling up on our green on most Tuesdays and Thursdays as most of their competitive fixtures have been cancelled. They have, however, played one Mendip League game, when they convincingly beat

Fosseway and won on all three rinks. A number of clubs have decided not to bowl so far this season, but as we move into July this should change and more league fixtures will take place. However, due to the disruption caused to fixtures, promotion and relegation have been cancelled this season.

straight defeats, Frys welcomed Begbrook Green 'A'. Despite early deficits on rinks 1 and 3, Frys closed the gaps, taking an overall lead. Rink 2 set up the win for Frys. Rink 3 grabbed a late lead and held on to take the points. After Frys took the lead on rink 1, a loose 16th and 17th end allowed Begbrook Green to take the points by 1 shot. Frys were the winners on the night with 8 points from the 54-40 win, but remained bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 16-17; Rink 2: 23-12; Rink 3: 15-11; Frys 54-40, Begbrook Green 'A' (8-2). n June 15: Frys made the trip to Division 1 side Weston Bath in the 1st round of the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy. Bath took control, with rinks 1 and 2 soon pulling away. Frys’ skip on rink 2 saved multiple shots to keep the score respectable. Rink 3 made a late comeback, winning on the final end, but it was Weston Bath taking

their place in the second round. Scores: Rink 1: 9-19; Rink 2: 6-24; Rink 3: 17-15; Frys 32-58. n June 17: After a 2-point 33-46 defeat at Ardagh, Frys welcomed Keynsham 'A' in the first local derby of year. The game started close on all rinks. That changed after halfway as Keynsham pulled away on rink 3. With rinks 1 and 2 still close, Frys stayed in the game. A late 4 on rink 1 for Keynsham left Frys with too much to do. Rink 2 were able to close the game out, giving Frys 2 points on a night, but they will feel could have done better. Scores: Rink 1: 9-17; Rink 2: 15-11; Rink 3: 6-19; Frys 30-47, Keynsham 'A' (2-8). We are open to new members. Contact secretary Christopher Day on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com. end. A fortunate wick from Frys 3 gave them shot, with the skip adding a second, and a loose bowl from Bradley Stoke's skip knocked a third Frys bowl into the count. Frys’ skip just missed adding a fourth and Bradley Stoke’s last bowl sneaked through the gap after some contact with Frys bowls, finishing just outside the count, giving Frys the 3 shots needed to rescue a point from the 39-50 defeat, but they remained bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 15-16; Rink 2: 14-14; Rink 3: 10-20; Frys 39-50, Bradley Stoke (1-9). n June 3: After a run of four
