From Page 1 The developer said initial research into traffic in the area indicated the development’s impact would be ”low” but a comprehensive assessment would be carried out. The site borders Manor Road Community Woodland to one side, which would be unaffected by the plans, says the developer, while to the north lies land that is the subject of a planning application by Mactaggart and Mickel for 250 new homes, which has met strong opposition from residents. But while the land off Minsmere Road was removed from the green belt and “safeguarded” for future building by Bath and North East Somerset Council in its core strategy in 2014, the document said it was not for development “at the present time”.

The core strategy sets out sites for developments across B&NES to meet the need for homes and jobs until 2029. The document adds: “Planning permission for development of the safeguarded land will be granted only when it is proposed for development following a

Crews get the inflatable raft ready for the rescue on the River Avon

Firefighters become cow herders for a day Firefighters used an inflatable raft to rescue a cow that had ventured along the River Avon at Saltford. Crews from Bath and Bedminster trained in animal and water rescue were called to Mead Lane after the animal was spotted on the riverbank near a pub car park. The cow had managed to

Money raised in Jack’s memory is funding another screening session for local people at Wellsway School on July 8 and 9, which is already fully booked. Dad Dave said the family’s next target is to fund a year of a research fellowship grant at the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology. He said: “We all miss Jack so much. Appeal after injured man found in road

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 61-year-old man was found unconscious in Charlton Road, Keynsham, last month.

The man was found with serious injuries by a member of the public outside Abbey Apartments just before midnight on Saturday, May 6. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition with a head injury. Police say they are treating his injuries as unexplained and there are no signs he was assaulted. Officers want to speak to the member of the public who was first to find the man and flagged down the ambulance. Anyone else who saw the man in the Charlton Road area before he was found is asked to contact DC Tom Williams on 101 and quote crime reference number 5217101036.

Fire station decision Avon Fire Authority has chosen its preferred bidder for the former fire station in Keynsham – but the decision had not been made public at the time of going to print following a meeting on May 26. A number of bids to buy the Temple Street site have been made, including one from Keynsham Town Council.

Why should I neuter my pet?

N

eutering is the general term for the removal of the reproductive organs in cats, dogs and rabbits and is widely regarded as a routine procedure. The most obvious reasons to neuter your pet are to eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancies and reduce inappropriate sexual behaviour, but there are lots of health benefits, too. Top five reasons to neuter your pet 1. Spaying your female pet will stop her from coming into season and eliminates the possibility of unwanted and expensive pregnancies. 2. Neutering can greatly reduce testosterone-driven behaviour in males such as spraying or scent marking and straying from home. 3. Neutering your pet can help to prevent many life-threatening cancers and womb infections (e.g. pyometra), which can be debilitating, painful and costly. 4. Neutering helps fight pet overpopulation which otherwise could lead to animals being

euthanased or suffer as strays. 5. Rabbits reproduce much faster than dogs and cats and from a much earlier age. Unspayed female rabbits also have a 95 per cent chance of developing uterine cancer before the age of four. Surgical developments have meant that female bitch spays can now also be done via keyhole surgery. Keyhole spays are safer and less invasive; your pet will have much smaller wounds, less post-operative pain and discomfort, and a much quicker recovery. Highcroft Veterinary Hospital was one of the first practices in the UK to perform female bitch spays by keyhole surgery, providing the best possible care for pets, and putting us at the forefront of this pioneering surgical development. Overall, neutering can lead to a longer and better quality of life for your beloved companion. Book your pet in to be neutered before June 30, 2017 and you will receive 20 per cent off! Contact Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 to find out more.

Festival aims to inspire ‘action for nature’ A camper van cinema called Lionel and a group of performers with river-based tales to tell are all making their way to Keynsham this month. The second Keynsham Festival of Nature will arrive at Keynsham Memorial Park on June 18 as part of a two-week celebration of the natural world in the Bristol and Bath area. This year Desperate Men, an outdoor arts company, will take to the Bandstand at 1pm and 4pm with their show We are Ducks, a compilation of natural history stories inspired by the group’s many riverside jaunts on the Avon, Severn and Wye. They will stay in character throughout the day and festival director Savita Custead said: “Desperate Men are a perfect partner for the festival. The Keynsham Festival of Nature returns on June 18 incredibly inventive, sometimes mischievous and even surreal, and I know they are going to put on a splendid show for everyone.” Festival goers will join a host of exhibitors offering a range of activities, including treasure hunts, water testing and mini-BioBlitzes, to find as many species living in the park as

possible during the day. A unique cinema in a campervan will also be welcoming visitors throughout the day to watch films telling stories of the River Avon. The VW campervan, known as Lionel, will be easy to spot as it’s decorated like a spaceship. Among the other exhibitors

will be Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, National Trust, Natural England, the Bristol Greenpeace group and Butterfly Conservation. Savita continued: “This year’s event will build on last year’s pilot Keynsham Festival of Nature. Many people last year wanted the event to be longer and with more activities to occupy them for the whole day, so we have worked hard to create a more varied programme. “We will be encouraging people to take action for nature, which could include building a habitat, encouraging wildlife in the garden, volunteering or recording species.” The Keynsham Festival of Nature will run from 11am to 5pm. ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

I

n the last month we have seen the changes to the Keynsham High Street – and love it or hate it, it’s here to stay for at least 18 months. I’m glad to say that from a policing point of view it has improved things for us. The reduced speed in traffic flow helps to prevent accidents and offences. The issues that are then caused, however, are that people are rushing around the rest of the town. We regularly get complaints about speeding vehicles on Park Road and Lockingwell Road, to highlight just two areas. At these locations the 20mph limit is often ignored. We will be monitoring these areas and dealing with offenders more regularly.

A reduction in speed equates to a reduction in life-threatening injuries should a collision occur – please respect the speed limits

These are residential locations with a reasonable amount of footfall and the speed limits have been introduced with safety in mind. A reduction in speed equates to a reduction in life-threatening injuries should a collision occur. Please respect the speed limits and leave yourself enough time for your journeys so that you don’t need to rush. With the lighter nights I find myself thinking back to last year. Antisocial behaviour (ASB) is on the rise, the main parks are in use longer and so our tolerance needs to be proportionate to their use. We are trying to be more visible, with the PCSOs tasked to

attend these locations and engage with their users. Our hope is to strike that happy medium with acceptable use of these areas without impacting negatively on other users and local residents. This is a difficult balancing act but we aim to be involved throughout the summer months. If anyone has any concerns about ASB then please report it so we can tailor our patrols to suit. We will also be targeting offenders who ignore both the weight limits and width limits that are in place in and around Keynsham. We have operations planned at Stockwood Hill, which carries both of these. This road

has a 6ft width limit and you’d be surprised how many vehicles are over this width. If you drive a goods vehicle you should know its size and weight restrictions. Ignorance is not an excuse. One of the more enjoyable roles that we fulfil is visiting the many school fetes and open days that come along in summer. If you see any of the local policing team at these events then please come up and say hello. Fly-tipping is blighting some of the lanes around the local area. This is a difficult offence to target due to the speed at which it occurs. If you see any vehicles that you believe could be involved in this, please just note their details and report it to us so that we can look into it. Don’t forget, if you need to speak to us then use the neighbourhood pages on the Avon and Somerset Force website where you can send us a message. PC James Evans

ally says: “Green Party policies are about working together to build a better future and sharing what we have more fairly.” She goes on: “We stand for confident, caring, modern Britain and a fairer future: l A leader in Europe and the world, proud to be able to care for those in need. l A modern Britain that invests in

new technologies and clean energy like the incredible work being done by Resourceful Earth, not subsidies for fossil fuels and fracking. l A caring Britain that educates young people, provides help for the sick and a home for the homeless. l A prosperous Britain that protects family firms, where people can earn a living and big business pays its way. “We can – and will – build a fairer future. “ Sally lives in the Chew Valley. she has been a board member of three law firms in London, Bristol and Cardiff, non-executive director of a local NHS hospital trust, charity trustee, governor of a primary school and treasurer for a local youth football team. Now, as a business growth and executive coach, she helps firms meet the demands of a changing world. Email Sally at sally.calverley@ greenparty.org.uk or call Sally on 0117 403 2425. Shaun Hughes Independent

M

y name is Shaun Hughes and I’m standing as an Independent candidate for North East Somerset. I have lived in Midsomer Norton for the past 23 years where I have a successful business within the military and aerospace electronics industry. Why am I standing? We are being told that this election is all

about Brexit and ignoring serious issues – increasing crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour, declining high streets and job opportunities, serious cuts to our police and health services. There is also a constant pressure for the building of new housing without the infrastructure to support it. Already our surgeries, hospitals, police officers are stretched to their limit. We need to have a clear, coordinated plan to invest in our existing community. I believe that our MP should be part of our community, not watching from the side-lines, and have a hands-on understanding of the issues we face every day. This is a wonderful place to live, we need someone in Westminster fighting to protect it and pushing to improve the services that we rely on. My priority is to put the needs of North East Somerset first. You can find out more at www. shaunhughes.info

He works in Keynsham, where, with a group of local people, he helped set up a youth and community trust providing activities and services out of a redundant vicarage. He now manages that trust. fter living and raising a family in North East Somerset I am standing to serve as MP for another five years. The job of an MP is to hold the Government to account, prevent abuses of power and ensure that legislation works. In this respect I hope I have displayed an independent turn of mind. Equally important, however, is for an MP to represent their constituents at Westminster without fear or favour. For the past seven years I have been there to act for constituents when they have exhausted all other avenues of enquiry and there is nowhere left to turn. An MP must be a champion for their constituents and I hope my record shows this. If I am fortunate enough to be re-elected and the Conservatives form the next Government I will strongly support Prime Minister Theresa May in her efforts to negotiate the best possible deal from the EU and I will staunchly defend the UK against the separatists who want to break up Britain. I will also continue to fight for good quality public services, particularly health and education. Above all, I shall work hard for local people and their interests, both at Westminster and here in North East Somerset.

Manda Rigby Liberal Democrat

I

am running for parliament because, like many of you, I am very worried about what the future holds for our country. I am worried that the current government is trying to scare the British people into supporting what it calls “strong and stable” leadership when it is anything but. Real strength does not mean caving in as soon as you encounter opposition, as the Tories have done repeatedly. Brittleness is not strength. I am worried the Tories want a dementia tax that will force anyone unlucky enough to need extended social care to sell their home. I am worried that the previous incumbent MP, Mr Rees-Mogg, has called for more Eton-educated MPs in Parliament, but supports cuts to state education, reintroducing grammar schools, and an end to free school lunch for children. I want to be returned as a LibDem MP with the honesty to say allowing the NHS to thrive will cost us more, ringfenced and dedicated to where it's most needed. North East Somerset deserves a MP who will hold the Tory government to account as an effective opposition. If you feel as I do that change is needed, please lend me your vote. Find me on social media @MandaRigbyNES.

Don’t forget to use your vote on June 8!

Bath and North East Somerset councillors have voted to reduce their numbers by 10 per cent – losing six councillors. The move follows a recommendation from the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) to make cuts. The commission is currently conducting the first electoral review of B&NES in 20 years. In a vote on May 18, councillors agreed that their numbers should be reduced from 65 to 59. As part of its review, the LGBCE is determining the correct number of councillors for the area before looking at the boundaries in light of reduced numbers. The following factors were identified which support the case for a reduction in numbers: l The shift from the council as an organisation that delivers a comprehensive range of direct services to a more commissioning focused organisation. l The reduction in central government funding. l Social media and new technology making it easier to engage with constituents and easier to resolve queries with council services. Bath & North East Somerset Council chief executive Ashley Ayre said the council is now awaiting the outcome of the commission’s review.

Apprentice Joe, 17 earns place in final A former Broadlands Academy pupil has earned a place as a finalist in competition that aims to find the country’s most enthusiastic and hard-working apprentices. Joe Page, 17, became a carpentry apprentice with Redrow Homes in September after completing his GCSEs. Now, along with eight colleagues from the company’s Bristol office, he is in the running for apprentice team of the year, representing the South West in the national finals of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge. To reach the finals, the team have made 11 visits to schools and youth groups to talk about the benefits of becoming an apprentice as well as redesigning and rebuilding a garden at a young carers’ centre in Fishponds so that the young

people have somewhere to relax. They also hosted a business event to talk to employers about hiring apprentices. Joe said: “It’s fantastic to be chosen as finalists as everyone on the team has worked so hard to get here. “Apprenticeships are a great way for young people like me to get on the job ladder while also benefiting from professional training.” He added: “We’ve all gained lots of new skills like presenting, teamwork and leadership and had a great time doing it. Now we’re focused on doing the best we can at the national finals.” The team will go to Brathay Trust’s Windermere headquarters for the logistical and teambuilding finale on June 14, facing competition from other teams from

n NEWS Phoebe’s brave shave for cancer charity A Keynsham youngster inspired by her dad’s cancer battle is “braving the shave” to help the fight against the disease. Phoebe Nethercott, 11, is having her long hair cut off on June 24 for the Little Princess Trust, which can then use it to make a wig for a cancer patient. But, in order to raise as much money as she can for Macmillan Cancer Support, she is then having her head shaved too. Phoebe said her dad Chris fought cancer in 2013 and added: “I know lots of people who have gone through this and although my dad was very lucky and had his cancer successfully removed,

he still struggles to walk long distances and it hurts him all the time but he never admits it. “I want to help anyone who is going through this by raising as much money as I can.” Phoebe will be having her head shaved by hairdresser Laura Holbrook on Bonzo Lounge’s terrace at 2pm with proud parents Trish and Chris and family and friends cheering her on. Supporters have already pledged more than £1,000 in sponsorship and anyone who would like to add to Phoebe’s total can visit https:// bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/ phoebe-nethercott/

n NEWS Help needed to meet foodbank demand Demand for a local foodbank has doubled in a year, sparking a plea for extra volunteers to help Keynsham Foodbank distribute food to those in need. The organisation runs three distribution centres in the town and aims to extend opening hours at its base at the Key Centre, at Victoria Methodist Church in the High Street, on Mondays. It also needs extra pairs of hands in the food collection and replenishment team, which picks up donations from Tesco and Waitrose each Tuesday and delivers the food to Broadlands Academy where it is stored. The team then delivers food to the distribution centres. Foodbank Coordinator Alan Hale said: “With the move to Universal Credit now fully operational in Bath and North East

Somerset many people are finding life difficult as they adapt to a single payment per month and being paid in arrears does not help and this is often compounded by delays in payments. “However, we are not only helping some people who are on benefits, we are also helping those in employment but on low wages. Hence the sharp upturn in need. We also provide school holiday meal bags for children who are entitled to free school meals or who are entitled to pupil premium.” During the last financial year the foodbank fed 748 people. Anyone wishing to learn more and get involved can contact Mr Hale on 0117 983 7923 or 07776 493221 for an informal chat, or email the foodbank at Keynsham Rotary keynshamfoodbank@gmail.com

‘Moving’ children’s cause announced as Keynsham firm’s charity of the year A Keynsham-based company has pledged to support youngsters with life-limiting conditions with a year of fundraising, including a summer race day. Dribuild, based in Rock Road, has announced that its charity of the year will be Together for Short Lives, which aims to help youngsters with short life expectancies to lead as fulfilling a life as possible and to get the best end-of-life care. To launch the partnership, Dribuild’s business development manager Helene Cook attended the charity’s conference in Aston. Earlier this year, the company presented £53,000 to Bristol hospital charity Above and Beyond after a year of fundraising and Matt Tyler, Dribuild MD, said he hopes this year will be just as successful. He said: “Being passionate about our charitable commitment makes supporting Together for Short Lives a really worthwhile and moving venture. Dribuild’s passionate corporate social responsibility programme will deliver a range of exciting events directly linked to the growth of the business. “Dribuild is growing year on year and as the company grows, so does the level of our commitment within our community. Knowing that the money we will be able to raise will be used to improve the lives of the children and their families

who will be faced with such adversity is something we’re very proud of.” The company will be raising funds over the next 12 months to help Together for Short Lives create closer ties within the children’s palliative care community to benefit children and their families. Together for Short Lives spokesperson Nick Appleby said: “We are delighted to be Dribuild’s charity of the year and their support will help us to ensure more children and their families are able to access specialist children’s palliative care services, day and night, seven days a week – when and where they need it.” Dribuild’s Charity Race Day

Creative summer ahead for ArtSpace Artists from Keynsham ArtSpace have become the latest group to use the exhibition space on the first floor of Keynsham Library. Their exhibition has been on display for the last four weeks, and featured works by Alan Hayward, John Chivers, Joe Tymkow, Jane Metters, Penny Richards, Moira Robertson and Gwen Edwards. ArtSpace is a group of more than 30 local artists who provide opportunities for artists to show their work to the public on a regular basis. The group consists of a wide range of artists and craftspeople, creating 3D artwork in ceramics, felt, glass, leather, metal and textiles; and 2D artists working with traditional and industrial mediums and materials. Chair of ArtSpace Joe Tymkow said: “We are currently nomadic, so this exhibition has enabled us to display works by our members for the first time since Christmas, and it’s been exciting to see them in the light

Work by artists from ArtSpace on display outside at Keynsham Farmers’ Market and airy space of the first floor of the Keynsham Library. It would be really exciting to have a more permanent base in the future, not just for exhibitions, but also to enable a range of additional activities and projects. We are actively looking for new space!”

The group has a busy summer ahead. Joe explained: “We plan to have work on show along the railings at the monthly farmers’ market, plus an ArtSpace marquee in Keynsham Memorial Park during Keynsham Music Festival, so fingers crossed for a

summer of great weather!” On June 10, ArtSpace will also be participating in the Keynsham Community Network event, organised by Keynsham Town Council, alongside other community groups in The Space in Keynsham Library, and members will be on hand to chat to the public about what they do, and show a small amount of work. Later in the year the group will be back in the library for an exhibition linked to the Winter Festival, with new works inspired by a “Woodland Creatures” theme. “Busy months ahead for us,” Joe said, “lots to plan, lots to create, and fingers crossed the weather is good for the events but not so great that we don’t get into our studios!” Members meet monthly to discuss events and to socialise, and details can be found on their Facebook page @KeynshamArtSpace, or email keynshamart space@outlook.com

Festival revives some classics as it unveils line-up for 20th anniversary bash

Keynsham Music Festival is always evolving, introducing new elements every year – but it’s always good to see the return of some old favourites, too. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sounds of Keynsham Orchestra as, after taking a break last year, they will be back to play the Gala Concert on Saturday, July 1, at 7.30pm in the Memorial Park. Conductor Tim Harrison and leader Andrew Rees will oversee the programme of classical favourites, which is free to watch – roll out your picnic blanket or ensure a seat in the marquee with a free ticket from Keynsham Town Council (15-17 Temple Street). Another event is making a welcome return as organisers aim to revive Keynsham Food Festival as part of the Saturday line-up

after it was cancelled last year. Expect a feast of goodies from local traders to enjoy alongside the folk and traditional dance performances and Keynsham Cars’ display of classic and vintage vehicles. The Festival Week itself will be kicked off by local singersongwriter Gavin Osborn, fresh from a tour of Australia and with tracks from his forthcoming album Echo Bridge – a name that will be familiar to fellow Keynsham residents. Gavin will be appearing at The Ship on Monday, June 26, from 8.30pm, the start of a week of entertainment that sees something happening every night in the run-up to the weekend. In the last month, despite a new HQ floor to enjoy, 1st Keynsham Scout group have been out and about and really active, writes our correspondent. Beavers have been investing new members in the middle of the countryside, learning navigation in the local park and, thanks to the support of GoOutdoors, learning to rock climb. Cubs, not content to be outdone by the Beavers, attended a Ninja Challenge event, made some stop-motion films and started to prepare for Cub camp (more on that next month). Scouts have been climbing, kayaking and, yes, camping. For most, the first camp of the season has been completed and there are many more to come. They have also been doing their bit for

Thank you to all of those people who supported the plant sale in May, which will help fund their activities – it is appreciated. Practice hikes, testing kit and improving teamwork are just some of their preparation. Interesting that all of the skills and activities learned by Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will be brought together on this trip. I bet the young people did not think that when they first started out in Scouting.

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

With the redundant fire station for sale and the office block to be converted, Temple Street is currently in the news. This scene shows it in a previous period of change. The photograph appears to date from about 1972, as the London Inn, beyond the temporary car park, was demolished the following year; the landlord moved to the Royal Oak in the High Street, taking the name with him. Only The Ship survived as a reminder of the row of old buildings that lined the east side of the road.

Families enjoy fun down on the farm

Wellies were welcome but not at all necessary when Keynsham and District Mencap Society hosted a Family Festival of Fun on a sunny Sunday at Bath City Farm. The day offered plenty of activities for families to enjoy together, from face painting, to beat the goalie, a teddy tombola, hook a duck and lucky dip, not forgetting the bouncy castle. Clown Bert entertained the crowds with magic, jokes and balloon making, while a raffle offered a range of prizes, many donated by local businesses, including the Centurion Hotel in Radstock, Reflections Hairdressers and Simply Carpets, Sainsburys in Odd Down and Keynsham, Waitrose, B&Q in Longwell Green and Booker. There was also a disco with music from Barry Hollyman and a barbecue and refreshments to keep guests going. Around 100 of the society’s members and their families

joined the festival on Sunday, May 21, raising more than £500 for the charity. Fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “There was an overwhelming amount of support from willing volunteers and without their help and enthusiasm the day would not have been so successful. “Although these events are important fundraisers for the society that isn’t the only reason they enjoy holding them; it’s also a chance for members to meet up with friends and have fun, raise the profile of the charity locally and showcase the excellent work they do providing social and leisure opportunities for people with learning disabilities.” If you want to find out more or get involved, contact info@ keynshammencap.org.uk Face painting proved popular at Keynsham Mencap’s Family Festival of Fun

Get spotting as bike trail begins Keynsham in Bloom’s Great Bike Trail is ready to roll, says chair Denise James, so get spotting. Meanwhile, budding young artists have been bringing a splash of colour in the annual colouring competition.

Old bedding and compost were removed and planters cleaned ready for the summer bedding, which will soon be on show for everyone to enjoy. We are extremely grateful for the work that was carried out, it is wonderful to see the youngsters getting involved and helping to enhance our community. Our thanks and appreciation to Jim Bernard, vice chair of Keynsham in Bloom, and Ian Carter of 1st Keynsham Scouts for co-ordinating the work party.

LETTERS Talking Newspaper needs your help We would like to make an appeal to your readers on behalf of the Keynsham and District Talking Newspaper. Firstly we are looking for someone to join the editing team for the news “side”. The editor selects the news items from local newspapers of the region ready for the recording team. As such they would need to be available on a Thursday (usually morning) when they are on duty, which is about once a month. For more details, please call 0117 299 3021. Secondly we are always on the lookout for new listeners. This is a free service for partially sighted and blind people which comes to them on a weekly basis. These days we record on a memory stick rather than tape and provide our listeners with a player which is very simple to use and we can help with getting started.

If anyone knows of someone who could benefit from the service, please call us on 0117 299 3021. Peter Gibson

Toilet facilities are essential for all

I whole heartedly agree with “Keynsham resident” in last month’s Keynshamvoice. I don’t come to Keynsham regularly from Saltford, but it seems to me that if Keynsham wishes to attract visitors and shoppers, it must provide facilities – parking spaces and toilets. The toilet block in Ashton Way should be reinstated without fail. I know that the council has to make cuts, but toilet facilities are essential for everyone. Cynthia Wilson Saltford

Road rage junction needs give way sign

rage, anger, lost wing mirrors etc etc that happen here when two cars attempt to use the road. People should give way to traffic coming up under the bridge. Now the one-way system is in place in the High Street, this road is used more and more and the situation is getting worse. I walk my dog twice daily and see this all the time. Surely this would be money being spent wisely and would relieve stress levels. Keynsham resident

Traffic forced onto already busy roads

In reference to the new traffic system for Keynsham’s High Street. I have lived in the town for more than 40 years and have never experienced such traffic chaos. On May 2 at 5.55pm I was heading to Tesco from Temple Street (I live off Dapps Hill) so was forced to go via Ashton Way, which had traffic back to the entrance at Rock Road. It took almost 10 minutes to get to Tesco. On trying to return home via Temple Street, on exiting Tesco into Charlton Road, I was forced to turn left as I was not allowed

to cross back into Ashton Way. I mistakenly thought that as High Street is now one-way perhaps I could turn right at the end of Charlton Road. But no – I had to turn left up to the roundabout outside St John’s Church and then back into High Street – more traffic jams. At the end of High Street, I was then confronted with a no right turn into Temple Street, so I had to turn left down over Bath Hill, which had traffic backed up beyond the New Inn. I turned into Back Lane and then had to try to re-enter the nose-to-tail traffic coming up Bath Hill. Behind me I had three other vehicles trying the same manoeuvre. If I was wrong turning into Back Lane, where should I have turned? The mini roundabout at the end of Avon Mill Lane? The next at the bottom of Fox and Hounds Lane or outside the New Inn? All of these would put me or any drivers further back in the queue, therefore contributing even more pollution to Keynsham and wasted fuel. So next time I leave Tesco I will have to exit opposite St John’s Court, turn left and then

June, 2017 left into St Ladoc Road and at the top turn right on that very nice blind bend before turning left into Charlton Park Road. Then it’s left into Handel Road then right at the bottom into Park Road and then left down Albert Road and right at the end onto Dapps Hill! All of these roads are already overused and far less suitable for vehicles than the original route back along Ashton Way. Can anyone explain what the objectives were to justify all this unnecessary work and expense? Barry Burston Keynsham

Are delivery charges ploy for extra cash? Thinking of renewing your passport online? Don’t bother. Spurred on by how easy it was to renew my driving licence online (for ID purposes only), I thought it would be a doddle. Not so. I couldn’t get beyond the photo download. Every attempt was thwarted with a different reason being given for rejection. Not too dispirited, I went along to a professional photographer. For

little more than those purchased in a photo booth, I re-applied – still no success. This time the reason given for rejection was different again! I took my laptop along to my local excellent service provider, Keynsham Photo Centre, thinking that my limited IT knowledge was to blame. It seems to be the case that the new online application software is not yet fit for purpose. I ended up posting my application with hard copies and received the renewal in less than two weeks. However, that is not the end of the story. The passport office were commendable and notified me of safe receipt. My old documentation was returned first. On Wednesday afternoon at 3.50pm I received a text message from DX delivery company advising me that they had tried to deliver an important document and that they were unable to leave the packet as it required a signature. Funny that, because I was at home all day. However, early the next morning my downstairs neighbour brought me a card that had been left I know not where stating that they had tried to deliver. Equally baffling as there

is no letterbox in the communal entrance door, and they certainly didn’t ring my flat bell! I was asked to contact them to rearrange delivery. They said in their text message to me that it would be too late to arrange a further delivery that day. They could deliver the next day in a one-hour time slot for a fee of over £6. This I declined, and rebooked for Friday as I would be out the next day. I was given a time of between 8am and 5pm. The Post Office also suggested when I went to weigh my package to ensure safe delivery to the passport office that I should pay a charge in excess of £6. I declined and asked for a free receipt, which I was duly given. One can’t help but wonder if these excessive charges are a necessary evil or a ploy to get extra revenue for said businesses. NEWS Success for debut dementia meeting

A new session offering dementia sufferers and their carers the chance to socialise and enjoy activities had a successful launch in Keynsham last month. Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) held its first Music for the Mind meeting at St Dunstan’s Church Hall, where six people living with the condition and their carers joined in warmup activities and singing led by a professional facilitator. Chairman of the DAA Alan Hale said: “We were over the moon with the attendance at this first Music for the Mind and the great enjoyment that was had by all who were there. “We have a good team of volunteers and our aim is to increase the number of events per month.” The next free session is on June 8 at 10.30am until noon – find out more on 0117 983 7923 or 07776 493221 or at dementia friendlykeynsham@gmail.com.

Exciting month to bring us all closer to nature Keynsham’s branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT) enjoyed two excellent local walks in April and May, writes chairman Dave Sage.

Photo: Martin Farrell

Walking along the River Avon, above; many fox cubs will be taking their first steps this month

The first walk started very early – 4.30am in late April at Saltford Shallows! In total, 24 very enthusiastic birdwatchers, led by Dave, watched the sun rise and listened as the birds woke and started singing. They started up one by one, each clearly identifiable from its song as robin, blackbird, song thrush, wren, chiffchaff, and so on, until the dawn chorus reached its full crescendo, heralding the start of a beautiful day. Altogether 39 species were seen and heard, notably willow warbler, blackcap, goldcrest and bullfinch, all at close range, as well as heron, kingfisher and grey wagtail on the walk back along the River Avon. A superb walk – and home

just in time for breakfast! The second walk, on a bright, warm afternoon in May, was around the AWT reserve at Folly Farm, near Bishop Sutton. Twenty of us were led round at a brisk pace by AWT volunteer Richard Campbell. A working farm and function centre (we couldn’t visit the main buildings because a wedding was in progress!), it is nevertheless managed largely for the benefit of wildlife and increasing biodiversity. Richard explained about the management work that takes place each week, and showed us several of the key habitats and keystone species. These included ancient woodland full of bluebells, early purple orchids, wild garlic, several fern species and woodland species such as sanicle, golden saxifrage, wood speedwell, yellow pimpernel and yellow archangel. We visited

“unimproved” pastures (socalled because they have not been treated with fertilisers or pesticides), where wild flowers could compete more fairly with grass species. Yellow rattle, cowslips, violets and tormentil all grow well among the dozens of large ant hills, which are characteristic of such pastures, since they are left undisturbed by human hand, tractor or plough. There was birdsong in abundance, including willow warbler, song thrush, chiffchaff, blackcap and green woodpecker, as well as distant buzzards. As Richard explained, cattle and sheep are grazed on some parts of the farm, to generate income which is used to support management and conservation work. Truly a shining example of how agriculture and wildlife can co-exist in a sustainable way, Folly Farm is also a beautiful place for a walk, with stunning

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group views over nearby Chew Valley Lake, another notable area for wildlife.

Coming up

June is a big month in our wildlife calendar, so much is happening out in our gardens, parks and wild spaces with lots of fledgling birds on our feeders and many young animals, including fox cubs making their first steps out into the wild world. It is also a big month to celebrate wildlife as there are so many exciting things happening locally. First and foremost is the Festival of Nature experience due to wend its way along the River Avon from Bristol to Bath between June 8 and 25, calling in at Keynsham for the weekend of June 16-18. Free Family Sunday (June 18, 11am-5pm) in Keynsham Memorial Park is an event not to missed with lots of fun for all the family, and Avon Wildlife Trust

Keynsham Group will be there among it all. We are holding a “mini Bio-Blitz” where every hour on the hour we invite you to join us as we head off to different areas of the park in search of all things “natural and wild”. We will also host a quiz and investigate creatures collected from an earlier river dipping. Join us also for our Marvellous Moths Night on June 17 – meet us in the Memorial Park from 10pm to midnight, at both the cafe and the bandstand where we will have moth traps set up and we will be investigating and reporting the species caught in

the traps. You will be able to view the moths close up and photography may be possible. Remember to bring a torch! Baked Cafe in the park will be open for refreshments during the evening. Our next walk is to Charterhouse to look at “the botanical treasures of the Mendips” on Sunday, June 25. For details and/or to book a place on the minibus, contact lizwintle@ yahoo.co.uk.

Film dives into a ‘Plastic Ocean’

Alongside these free events we have organised one paid event – our film screening of A Plastic Ocean kicks off the Keynsham Festival of Nature weekend on Friday, June 16, from 6.45pm at Keynsham Community Space. A Plastic Ocean is an epic global adventure following a documentary filmmaker and a

world record free-diver as they travel the earth discovering the shocking impact plastic is having on our oceans and the marine animals that live there. The film investigates how our addiction to plastic is impacting the food chain and how that is affecting every one of us through new and developing human health problems. During its four-year production period, A Plastic Ocean was filmed in 20 locations around the world in beautiful and chilling detail to document the global effects of plastic pollution–and introduce workable technology and policy solutions that can, if implemented in time, change things for the better. This is bound to be a sell-out event so if you don’t have your tickets yet, act quickly. Tickets are available from https://aplasticoceankeynsham.eventbrite. co.uk. Proceeds from this event will help support conservation in Avon. For further information, email keynshamawt@gmail.com or call Kathy on 07850 508702.

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

A

fter the very successful walking festival in April, it was not a surprise that we had a bumper turn-out for our May walk around Folly Farm. The members who used the Dial-aRide minibus from Keynsham met up with those who had made their own way to make a total of 30, who all set off, in glorious walking weather, on the first of the arranged walks. There are three waymarked walks around the Avon Wildlife Trust-run community working farm, and we chose the shorter three-miler, as there were some among us who did not want the longer seven-mile walk. After a steady climb up Plain Hill, we were rewarded with beautiful views over the Somerset countryside towards the Severn Estuary. Coming back to the reception area, Terry from Dial-a-Ride was waiting to take a few back to Keynsham. The rest set off for a second time to climb North Hill, where we stopped for a picnic with views over Chew Lake. Heading back

Setting off at Folly Farm, far left; blue and white blooms in Dowling Wood, left through the ancient forest of Dowling Wood, we were greeted with a carpet of blue and white, as the bluebells and wild garlic were still in bloom. There was plenty of other flora and fauna for us to enjoy. We arrived back at our car park destination slightly ahead of schedule, but fully rejuvenated after a super walk. Our thanks go to Mike for leading the walk, and to Terry for being on hand to ferry us around. Forthcoming events Everybody is welcome to join

our two walks in June, which are suitable for children. l Sunday, June 11 A linear walk to Saltford to join in their super festival. Meeting at the Memorial Park cafe at 10am, we shall be following the River Avon and the cycle path to Saltford. Because there are so many events as part of the festival, we shall be stopping for a couple of hours to enjoy the atmosphere. We should be back in Keynsham by about 4pm. l Saturday, June 17 A circular walk following the River

Chew Trail. Again meeting at the Memorial Park cafe at 10am, as part of the Festival of Nature we are fortunate to have John Aldridge from the Avon Wildlife Trust to point out all things nature, visiting Chewton Keynsham, Compton Dando, and Burnett. We should be back in Keynsham by 1pm. There is a charge of £3 for this walk, and tickets are available from Keynsham Town Council office at 15-17 Temple Street. Gifts for valued community groups Residents who enjoy activities at Keynsham’s Community At 67 have helped to secure new equipment for two of its groups. The weekly Coffee & Craft group received a new sewing machine while Mandy’s Kitchen, which provides a lunch club at the Queen’s Road premises, was presented with new cooking equipment from Curo, after some of the housing association’s customers asked for help. Clare Hudson, a member of the Coffee & Craft group and a trustee at Community At 67, said: “Our new sewing machine is a wonderful addition to the group. We’re keen on up-cycling and getting young parents into sewing, making products to sell to benefit the group. The craft group raised £3,500 for Children’s Hospice South West this Easter. “67's a very happy group; there's always a cheerful face and someone to listen to and new volunteers are welcome. A

Cricket club hosts dance for new pitch

A village cricket club is hosting a barn dance to raise money towards their new pitch, writes Ros Anstey. Compton Dando’s Nomads Cricket Club is hosting the event at Tony and Lynda Warren’s Wick Farm, between Compton Dando and Hunstrete, on Saturday, June 10. There will be live music from ceilidh band The Electric Lobsters, with a caller, hog roast and bar. It follows a similar dance a few years ago at the same venue, which raised funds for a village defibrillator. This time funds will go towards the Nomads’ new cricket pitch at Woodlands, Green Lane Farm. The dance will be held from 6pm until late and tickets will cost £10 for adults, while children will go free of charge if accompanied by an adult. For tickets, contact Ben on 07941 222662, Darren on 07525 950306 or obtain them from the bar at the Compton Inn.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Spring walks

Members of the society have recently enjoyed two very different guided walks. The first, in late April, was along the seafront at Clevedon. Local historian Jane Lilly first explained the building of the Marine Lake, then took us along the front describing the history of the various large houses, the terrace along The Beach, closer to the pier, and tourist features such as the bandstand, built in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Particularly interesting was a diversion to Copse Road, Photo: Derek Harper

The Beach, Clevedon behind The Beach, with a range of attractive houses built in different styles. As with all such walks, a local guide showed us features that a casual visitor never notices and brought the history of the town to life. Last month’s walk was a tour of part of central Bristol, led by society treasurer Keith Norton, to discover some of the hidden buildings between The Centre and Park Row. Much has been lost but there are fascinating survivors. We climbed Christmas Steps, to the Foster’s Almshouses and the Chapel of The Three Kings of Cologne, founded in 1490. Nearby is the Tudor Red Lodge and, opposite, the Jewish Synagogue. Across Park Street we found

Dr Claude Harrison was an active supporter of the town’s sports clubs as well as a local doctor who cared for many residents the replica of part of the city’s High Cross, hidden in the gardens of Berkeley Square – the original, dating from 1373, was moved to Stourhead in 1768. Then we walked through Brandon Hill Park, given to the city in 1625, before ending our walk on Great George Street

Dr Claude Harrison

This year sees the 60th anniversary of the death of a man who gave a great deal to Keynsham: Dr Claude

Harrison. He was born into a family of doctors, which included his father, Dr Charles, who was much loved and respected in the town, and his uncle, the famous cricketer Dr WG Grace. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, “Dr Claude” returned to Keynsham and helped to reform the Keynsham Town Cricket Club. He was soon recognised as a talented player and over the years fulfilled many roles for the club as captain, secretary, chairman and president and, most importantly, as a trustee when the club took on a mortgage to purchase the new ground in 1930. During World War II he organised baseball matches for the American troops stationed at Burnett, a great novelty at the time, and many a Keynsham youngster was introduced to popcorn and the music of Glenn Miller at these events. He had a keen interest in many sports and was also president of Keynsham Rugby Club from 1928 to 1956. In 1923 he joined his father at his surgery in Tregare House, 44 High Street (now the site of the Post Office) and ministered to the needs of local people for the rest of his life. In the days before the NHS, doctors’ visits and treatments had to be paid for but many a family had cause to be grateful to Dr Claude as he continued his father’s tradition of not charging those in genuine hardship. After his death in 1957, the main gates to the Memorial Park were refurbished in his memory and a memorial plaque reads: “A much-loved doctor and sporting enthusiast who devoted his life to the welfare of Keynsham people.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non-Fiction

l Today We Die a Little: Emil Zatopek, Olympic Legend to Cold War Hero by Richard Askwith Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant I stumbled on this book in the Sport section and was intrigued by the title. I knew a little bit about Zatopek but I was not expecting to find it so appealing. Richard Askwith has a real talent in telling the story of this athlete, making the reading very entertaining. Zatopek is at the Olympics of 1952, representing his country, Czechoslovakia, there to gain gold medals for the Communist regime. This man is passionate about what he is doing and with a real ethic. Without all the knowledge, science and sponsors athletes have today to improve their fitness, he makes his own bid to make progress in his discipline. From tough training sessions to food testing, he doesn’t neglect anything that could improve his fitness. Genuinely a strong character on his own, he will refuse to go to the Olympics if the regime doesn’t free his friend who is in prison. Soon the party sees this man could be a threat to its power and is determined to break him down.

Adult Fiction

l Freya by Anthony Quinn If you are after a novel about the

long-lasting joys and complications of friendship this may be the book for you. In London, May 1945, at the height of VE day celebrations Freya Wyley meets Nancy Holdaway and so begins a story of two very different women and their friendship. Freya is self-confident, ambitious and outspoken. Nancy is younger, gentler and less self-confident. The book traces their stories from war-haunted Oxford to the bright new decade of the 1960s. Along the way the two women encounter charismatic Robert Cosway, whose own story will impact on the two women, as well as some major events of the 1960s, from the advent of TV celebrity to the Cold War and espionage. This is an ambitious book for the amount of recent history it covers but the main characters, in particular Freya, make it an excellent read.

Young Adult Fiction l Rock War by Robert Muchamore Robert Muchamore is well known for his Cherub and Henderson Boys series but here he has branched out into the world of rock bands and talent

shows in the first book of a series. Jay, Summer and Dylan are all talented musicians but situations in their lives are thwarting their ambitions – for example, a very noisy family life or having to be a carer. However, they all want to appear on a reality TV show, Rock Wars, and dream of fame and fortune. Will their dreams come true? Robert Muchamore is an excellent writer, in particular for boys or reluctant readers. This is a sure-fire hit, especially for those with an ambition to become the next Beatles.

Children Audio-Books

For any future long car journeys, why not try out the library’s large selection of children’s audio books. l By Royal Command by Charlie Higson For all those future spies out there, here is a story read by Nathaniel Parker from the very successful Young Bond series. Following a successful mission in the Alps, James Bond has returned to school. However, someone is still watching him – he alone holds the clue to a sinister plot that could bring chaos to his school and the country. Forced to flee to Austria again, James has a terrible reunion with a bitter enemy which throws him yet again into the path of danger and adventure.

l How to Survive Summer Camp by Jacqueline Wilson From the wonderful writer Jacqueline Wilson, and read by Kelly Hunter, comes a great tale of comedy, adventure and real life. Stella has been “dumped” at a summer camp while her mum goes away on holiday and she knows she is going to hate it. On the first day she is mistaken for a boy and then her room mates are absolutely horrible. To make matters worse, she has to take dreaded swimming lessons – can the situation get any worse? Well, listen and find out!

Library News

l Baby Bounce & Rhyme We are currently looking for volunteers to help at our popular Baby Bounce and Rhyme. If anyone is interested, please can they email lorraine_corbishley@bathnes.gov. uk. l Saturday craft activities are held at 10.30am in Keynsham Library. l Sing along to your favourite rhymes at Baby Bounce & Rhyme, every Tuesday at Keynsham Library: Session1 – 10-10.30am; Session 2 – 11-11.30am. l Come and listen to stories and rhymes at Story Time every Thursday during term time at Keynsham Library from 1010.30am.

GARDENING TIPS In the Garden As this is to be my final article I thought I would review the past five years in the garden. The main plant is the grass, as it takes up most of the space. The weather is never right. I applied treatment to the grass in mid-April on probably the first day of the dry period. Ominous dark patches appeared but it was not dead moss. It looked like a fine grass, dead but spreading. It is now disappearing, but numerous large anthills have developed. Brush them away with the besom! Although the grass is green I do not have a good record over the years. Our tubs and hanging baskets are undergoing their annual planting and rarely, if ever, fail to please. These are prepared by the lady gardener, who has carte blanche, and are always a blaze of colour. They vary over the years as one new plant replaces an old favourite. The jasmine, both winter and summer flowering, continue to cover the trellis. After a number of mistakes I have found the best time to prune the two plants is just after the flowering of the summer pink one. A weigela was planted some five years ago and remained very sulky until this spring. It has burst into a most attractive bush, with pale pink flowers set against the variegated green leaves. A snowberry bush (Sympharicarpos), which was new two years ago, has established itself and is showing good signs of becoming a sturdy plant. The flowerbeds constantly change. One which contains some very fine heucheras has developed almost by accident, due to the gift of some plants some years ago. New heucheras have been added and now nemesias have joined them, on recommendation to the lady gardener.

My old friend the wisteria has once again produced some beautiful flowers in late April/early May and is now waiting for me to get on with the necessary pruning. I obviously got something right. Also spectacular is the tamarisk. Pale pink in colour, it is just beginning to fade. Pruning it is a mystery to me. The advice is to cut out all the branches which have flowered. But they have all flowered! As usual I shall cut out the oldest end branches and next year it will flower as usual. Six new Euonymus japonicus Bravo were planted last autumn against a new fence. I recorded their height against the fence, and now they have grown by six inches! Only another four feet to get to six feet. One problem last year was an attack by a beetle on our large viburnum bush. It decimated the leaf and this year only a few new leaves appeared. I have fed and watered it and removed all the rubbish from under it, so we will wait and see. A very pretty acer has grown happily in a tub for a number of years and has all the appearance of dying. I have given it some emergency treatment and hope it will survive. The roses have all been with us for many years and thrive, provided that they have their regular feed of Top Rose and a spray of Rose Clear. Arthur Bell, a standard rose, is near to me as I write and the scent is wonderful. The crocosmia, which came to me as a couple of corms, are now

two separate stands of some two feet across and six feet high. They will give a good red presence in a couple of weeks. In front of them stand two foxgloves, self-seeded in just the right place, with yellowishwhite flowers appearing up the stems, and two clumps of poppies have just started to burst. So everything in the garden is lovely, or nearly so, and we shall go on cursing and enjoying it all summer. Happy gardening and goodbye! Tony Lanham

The autumn-sown broad beans have yielded a good crop and will soon be over. If you notice black-fly on the plants, simply remove the tips or the infestation will spread, especially if the weather stays warm. The spring sowings are yet to fruit and won’t for a little while and these are likely to be more prone to black-fly. With the risk of frost now gone and with the lengthening days and warmer temperatures, plants should be growing well. Make sure they are well watered and keep the weeds under control as they simply steal moisture and nutrients from you crop. Established plants may need a little help by way of liquid

feeding. There are a number of products that can be added to the water but make sure you use the right one for the crop in question. For example, tomatoes need high potash feed to encourage flowering and fruit but so do cucumbers, courgettes and soft fruit. Conversely salad and leafy vegetables need high nitrogen to encourage growth but if not sure then use an all-purpose general fertilizer that has a balance of all the nutrients. This is important as the nutrient levels in your soil have probably been depleted over the years. Incorporating well rotted manure or compost improves the texture of the soil as well as increasing its ability to retain nutrients. Asparagus should be cropping well now but make a note of when you picked the first crop as it is important to stop cropping established plants after eight weeks to allow them to grow on and ensure there is a crop next year. If your asparagus has only recently been planted then don’t crop for at least two years. By now most of your planting should be completed but successive sowings of peas, carrots, beetroot and salad vegetables can continue over the coming weeks. Remember to sow little and often to avoid a glut that often goes to waste. If you are growing strawberries watch out for bird and slug damage followed by infestations of wood lice that will spoil the crop. Cover the ripening fruit in netting and set up some slug beer traps. Always keep your vegetable plot clear of weeds to give your plants the best chance of yielding a healthy return. Do this by frequent hoeing even if weeds are not evident. Disturbing the top soil with the hoe where weeds will germinate is the best way to prevent weed growth. Prevention is better than cure.

PEN TO PAPER with Keynsham Creative Writers

It's Just An Apology

I can only sympathize With those who apologize For constantly getting it wrong They're trying to impress Not me, I have to confess My apologizing days are long gone Now a heartfelt apology Is just simple psychology

Sorry is the hardest word So they say, but that's quite absurd A throwaway quip, without thinking People use it with ease

So fear not if you've told a whopper And your lies have all come a cropper Make clear your case politely Just begin by pleading forgiveness Sound convincing and not too frivolous

Keynsham Creative Writers meet at Keynsham Library on the second and fourth Monday of the month and new members are always welcome.

Bowlers’ centenary season under way Frys Bowling Club have had to wait until their third game of the season to score a win as the new season got under way in April. The first game of the Bristol and District Bowls League season saw Frys welcome Weston Bath on a cold night, with the visitors making a much brighter start and winning 50-36. Next was an away defeat at BAC, Frys 35-61 BAC. Back on home turf on May 11, however, Frys won all 10 points with a 57-37 win against Henleaze A, before an away win at Knowle B the following Thursday, Frys 55-45 Knowle B. On Saturday, July 8, Frys will be hosting an open day where club members will be on hand at Somerdale Pavilion to show visitors how to play the game. More details will be announced next month. President’s side are guests on the green

The season is in full flow at Keynsham Bowling Club with fixtures coming thick and fast, writes our correspondent. Early in the month there was some concern, as was the case with most clubs, that the green had more brown patches than would be expected, but recent rain has now rectified that problem. The men have started their fixtures in the Bristol and District Thursday evening league and the Saturday North Somerset League, fielding three teams in each. It is probably too early in the season to pass judgement other than to say there is room for improvement! The men have fared better in the early stages of national tournaments and they have progressed to the next round in the Top Club and 2 x 4 competitions. Pride of place, however, goes to the ladies who at the time of writing have won all of their fixtures – three in the North Somerset League and four friendlies.

The club staged its first internal competition on a Sunday when 12 teams competed against each other in mixed triples. The winning team of Lily Springer, Roy Wilton and Martin Moore now hold the Ray Percival Trophy for the next year.

We also were delighted to play host for a week to the President’s County Touring side from Essex, who stayed at the Arnos Manor Hotel and played matches against a number of local sides. They were delighted to use our green for mornings in

the week and were particularly appreciative of the lunches prepared for them by our ladies. We provided the opposition for their final fixture when we fielded six rinks, ending up being narrowly beaten. Pictured are the two sides at the start of the game.

Regatta silver for foursome

by Ros Anstey A team of teenage rowers have returned home to Saltford with a silver medal from a national contest. The girls’ 14-year-old coxed quad from Avon County Rowing Club travelled to Nottingham to represent the Wiltshire, Avon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wales region at the British Rowing Junior Inter-Regional Regatta after qualifying at Eton Rowing Club in March. The crew – Jessie King, Finnola Stratton, Ellie Frasier and Lottie Davis, coxed by experienced rower Carla May – were well prepared by their coaches for the big day and didn’t disappoint at the National Watersports Centre.

Football club starts first all-female team

From left, Jessie King, Lottie Davis, Carla May (cox), Ellie Frasier and Finnola Stratton with their medals After winning their heat they came second in a hard-fought final, losing out by only 1.5 seconds. They were presented with their medals by a member of the Cambridge crew that won

the famous Cancer Research UK Women’s Boat Race against Oxford in April. Following on from this, the crew are hoping for a successful regatta season this year.

A Keynsham football club launched to help make football accessible to everyone is looking for young players to join its new U15s girls’ team. Red Falcon FC, based at Somerdale Pavilion, is launching what will be its first all-female team on Wednesday, June 7, when training will get under way at 6.30pm. The club currently has three junior teams, U7s, U9s and U11s, who train on a Saturday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am. Red Falcon runs alongside its charity #Football4Everyone, whose founders want to make the sport affordable for all, with training costing £1 per person. Recently the club has had help from Yeovil Town Ladies and FA WSL2 winner Hannah Short, who is also an ambassador for #Football4Everyone. Keynsham circuit to put cyclo-cross riders to the test More than 100 cyclists from across the West Country will be heading to Keynsham this month to compete in a regional cyclocross competition. Described as a little like “steeplechase on a bike”, the riders will tackle a new tailormade 2km cyclo-cross course that has been developed at Somerdale in a partnership between landowner Taylor Wimpey, leisure charity Aquaterra and Salt and Sham Cycle Club. The cyclists will ride over grass, mud, gravel and sand, tackling man-made barriers, banks and steps on modified drop-handle road bikes. The Western CX Summer League Round 5 will be hosted at Somerdale on June 14 by Salt and Sham and Keynsham bike shop 73 Degrees. Spectators will be able to get close to the action as riders see how many circuits they can complete in an hour. Kev Brewer, from Salt and Sham Cycle Club, said: “Cyclocross is a really welcoming sport. The ‘have-a-go’ approach means that many spectators soon become racers. Last year the winter event we ran here

broke the regional record with 220 racers, and we are looking forward to a big turn-out again this time. Everyone is welcome to come along and watch, and if you fancy participating please get in touch.” As part of the Keynsham circuit a “double spiral” has been cut into the grass track, resulting in some amazing photographs as streams of riders ride into and out of the spiral at the same time. Cyclo-cross is a fast-growing cycling discipline raced by both professionals and amateurs of all ages, with events in Belgium attracting thousands. Kev added: “The sport caters for all abilities and fitness levels, with plenty of spectator support and interaction adding to the infectious atmosphere. The most successful riders need a good level of fitness, but often those with smooth, clean riding skills and some luck are rewarded, especially during the muddier winter events, where riders have to carefully negotiate tight off-camber turns and quickly dismount to run up steep, slippery banks.” For more about the event, see Salt and Sham Cycle Club’s Facebook page SaltNSham.

MVP Rich Green hit the first grand slam home run of his career to push the Bristol Bats to victory over the Taunton Musketeers

Green’s grand slam sweeps Bats to victory A grand slam home run by Rich Green drove Bristol Baseball Club’s Bristol Bats to a 30-2 victory over the Taunton Musketeers on Sunday, writes our correspondent. With the Bats leading 8-2 after four innings, MVP Green ignited a 13-run sixth inning for the Bristol team with his first ever grand slam. It was an excellent overall performance from Green who also pitched five strong innings, giving up just two runs while striking out five Musketeers. He also drove in six runs and stole six bases. The Bats finished off the game with a rare triple play, which started with an excellent catch in the outfield by team manager Billy Vickery. Newcomer Ashley Pooley

He got a hit every time he was up at bat and fielded well at third base. “It was important that we responded after the loss to the Badgers,” said Billy Vickery. “I am delighted we didn't commit any errors in the field and the offensively the whole team made strong contributions.” Bristol Badgers were due to play the Taunton Muskets at Somerdale Pavilion but the game had to be rearranged and will now take place later in the year.
