Keynsham High Street should keep its one-way system, according to more than half of the people who took part in a council survey. The scheme has divided residents and visitors to the

town, however, as the results of the public consultation revealed that while 53 per cent wanted to keep it, 39 per cent thought it should be scrapped. Bath and North East Somerset Council said it received 1,559

responses to the consultation on the controversial scheme between January and March, one of the highest responses to any recent consultation across the district. Turn to Page 3

‘Breathing space’ as sale of land delayed A patch of land in Keynsham has been withdrawn from auction following an outcry from residents – who now have six months to work on plans to create a nature reserve. The disused site at the junction of Bath Hill and Fox Hounds Lane was listed for sale in London last month by Bath and North East Somerset Council. But people living nearby were dismayed at the news and called on Keynsham Town Council to help them keep the site in public hands so it could be used as a nature reserve. After holding an extraordinary meeting last month, town councillors agreed to cover B&NES’s costs of £1,000 to withdraw the site from auction, winning residents six months to rally local support for the scheme. Resident Margaret Maxwell spoke in front of town councillors at their extraordinary meeting, explaining concerns over the state of trees and walls on the site and worries that a developer could leave it to fall into further disrepair. She told Keynshamvoice that “time is now of the essence” to form a plan to preserve the land for public use. She said: “We

are very pleased that Keynsham Town Council has stepped in to help save the land for the local community. This has given a much-needed breathing space to consider what’s best for its future and the way to proceed. “It's still early days and we realise there’s a lot to be done. We need to gather support locally to form a community group of interested individuals with the skills needed to take the project forward. However, time is of the essence since the land has been taken off the market for a period of six months only. “We hope to involve the greater Keynsham community as volunteers in forming a steering group to help turn what is currently a dangerous wilderness into a quiet nature reserve that will serve both wildlife and those wishing to find a bit of peace and quiet. We need people with knowledge of horticulture and the natural environment as well as those who enjoy gardening. We also look forward to working constructively with both B&NES and the town council who will be key to the success of the project.” Anyone who would like to get involved can contact Andy Wait at waithere91@gmail.com

‘Little support among local businesses’ From Page 1 Those who backed the scheme said it should either continue as it is or with some improvements, with suggestions including complete pedestrianisation of the High Street, allowing traffic to continue from the High Street into Temple Street, taking steps to cut congestion and alterations to the junction at Rock Road and Temple Street and the turning into Tesco from Charlton Road. According to its supporters the trial had made the High Street more pleasant, easier to cross, safer for pedestrians and had improved air quality. For those against the scheme, however, criticisms included longer journey times around the town, queues of traffic on Bath Hill, fears that air pollution was being displaced to other parts of the town and concerns at the impact on local businesses. Responses from more than 100 businesses in the town centre revealed that 39 per cent reported a fall in monthly takings

when compared to the same period before the trial, 11 per cent saw an increase and 37 per cent said they had stayed roughly the same. Only three per cent felt the trial had had a positive impact on footfall, 49 per cent thought the effect was neutral and 48 per cent thought there had been a negative impact on footfall. A report by council officers on the results of the business survey concluded: “In summary, this survey has identified little support for the Keynsham High Street one-way trial in its current configuration from the local business community. There have been a range of suggested improvements put forward by the surveyed business community to mitigate the perceived effects of the one-way system and it is recommended that these are considered in the future traffic system for Keynsham High Street and its immediate vicinity.” The trial was introduced in

May last year in response to calls to reduce traffic on the High Street and improve the area for pedestrians. Air quality data published as part of the consultation showed an improvement around the High Street, with levels of nitrogen dioxide below the national high risk level. B&NES Council’s Cabinet members are due to make a decision this summer about the future of the High Street, and whether further investment will be sought for Keynsham town centre. Councillor Mark Shelford, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has given us their views on the High Street. We’ll be studying the feedback we’ve received carefully and looking at the impact the trial has had on air quality, traffic, footfall and parking before making a decision on its future. “In the meantime we’ll

continue to monitor air quality and pedestrian movement in and around the town.” Councillor Paul Myers, cabinet member for economy, said: “Through the business survey, we have heard from retailers within Keynsham who are concerned about falling trade in the town centre. It’s important to listen to the business community and we recognise that high streets across the UK are suffering. “Improving the quality and environment in the town centre is necessary to maintain Keynsham as a destination in the long-term future and ensure that the town is positioned to adapt to changes in the way that people spend their time. Without cutting traffic through the High Street it will be difficult to bring in additional funding to improve the town centre environment." Council defends roadworks timing as Residents have slammed the decision to allow roadworks to go ahead on two different routes into Keynsham at the same time as “appalling planning”. Motorists travelling in and out of the town reported “gridlock” at peak times as work got under way on the second phase of resurfacing work on Keynsham bypass in early May – coinciding with junction improvement works at the entrance to the Somerdale site. The firm working at Somerdale, Montel Civil Engineering, said the start of A4 scheme had led to “a wider impact on traffic congestion than was initially anticipated” as motorists headed into Keynsham to avoid the bypass. As a result, the firm said it had made changes to its traffic management at the junction, which is currently controlled by temporary traffic lights. A spokesperson said: “While the junction improvement works

Work under way at the junction of Station Road/Keynsham Road and the Somerdale site have been carried out through close liaison with Bath and North East Somerset Council, the recent commencement of the nearby highway improvement scheme along the A4 and A4174 has created a wider impact on traffic congestion than

was initially anticipated. It is believed that traffic, trying to avoid these other works, has been utilising the road network through Keynsham rather than queuing on the bypass. B&NES and Montel Civil Engineering have been monitoring the delays

associated with our works (at Somerdale) and following numerous concerns expressed by motorists, a meeting was held last week to review our traffic management and decide on what measures could be taken to reduce the impact on vehicles.

queues are tackled

“Various solutions were discussed, and subsequently implemented. These appear to have had a significant effect on queuing traffic, and certainly during normal off-peak times, the volume of traffic waiting at the temporary traffic signals can be counted in single figures.” Sharing their experiences of the congestion online, a number of residents reported that the queues had caused disruption to work, childcare and even to children sitting their GCSEs at local secondary schools. One wrote on the Keynsham Community Facebook page: “The current roadworks situation is absolutely appalling planning! I have been over an hour later every night this week to collect my daughter from child care. Disgusted with B&NES.” Another added: “The Station Road works should have been undertaken before the site was developed. Therefore to state that overlapping of the two sets of roadworks was unavoidable is nonsense.” A B&NES Council spokesperson said the Somerdale junction works were “necessary” to ensure safety as the number of people using it increased while winter damage to the bypass meant the resurfacing work could not be postponed. They added: “Bath and North East Somerset Council and the multiple contractors involved are working to reduce the impact of the roadworks, adjusting traffic management and signal timings where possible to help keep traffic moving. We are making good progress, the works are progressing in accordance with the timetable and we will endeavour to minimise any inconvenience. “The junction works on Station Road are being undertaken as part of the Somerdale housing development by Taylor Wimpey, and are necessary to ensure safer vehicle movements as the number of people entering and leaving the development increases.” The traffic signals on Station Road would be changing to a two-way system and the work was due to be completed at the start of June, they added. “The £2 million improvement

of the Keynsham bypass will be mostly overnight,” the spokesperson continued. “However, it will be necessary to have daytime contraflows and lane closures to allow works to be completed safely. These works are essential as the carriageway has reached the end of its life, requiring frequent maintenance intervention. The weatherdependent nature of the bridge deck waterproofing restricts these works to appropriate times of year. “Given the winter damage to the Keynsham bypass, the condition of the carriageway is too poor to postpone the works. We are working closely with our contractors to reduce the working area required giving more space for car lanes, we are also working with the signal engineers in Bristol City Council to adjust Hicks Gate roundabout timings to try and improve journey times. The works are on track and due to be completed at the end of July. “The council deals with more than 10,000 street works a year and endeavours to co-ordinate these as effectively as possible taking into account residents’, traders’ and visitors’ needs. Sometimes circumstances make it impossible to entirely separate works and we apologise for the disruption caused. In an attempt to warn motorists of the likely delays information signage, both static and electronic, was placed in advance of both works and is being updated as the scheme progresses.” Montel said the council has agreed to three overnight road closures for the final surfacing works to Keynsham Road and Station Road. Its spokesperson said: “With the intention of completing the works at the earliest opportunity, B&NES have agreed to three overnight closures – over Thursday 7, Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June – between the hours of 8pm and 6am. Access to all residents within the Somerdale development and associated neighbourhood will be maintained, but Keynsham Road will be closed to through traffic during these periods. A signed diversion route will be available.”

A temporary bridge will provide access to the leisure centre site for construction vehicles

Leisure centre contractor to install bridge A temporary bridge will be installed over the River Chew from Bath Hill car park from June 3 as work begins on refurbishing Keynsham Leisure Centre. Contractor Kier Construction is installing a Bailey bridge to provide access for its vehicles to the lower park before starting work on the new teaching pool extension. Parking will be suspended in 35 bays for one day as the bridge is installed in sections with a crane. Over the coming weeks Kier will be installing hoardings and scaffolding around Riverside and the leisure centre, which will remain open throughout the work.

The refurbished leisure centre will include new poolside changing rooms, an enhanced fitness suite, a refurbished sports hall, new studio space, a revamped reception and café area and a multi-storey soft play area. Work on the squash courts, sports hall, gym, reception, café and soft play area is expected to be completed in spring next year, when the swimming pool will close. The centre is then expected to fully reopen in winter. Details are available at www.bathnes. gov.uk/services/sport-leisureand-parks/health-and-fitness/ leisure-centres-and-sport-facilities/keynsham

hether your pet has ingested a poisonous substance, been run over by a car or injured while out on a walk, emergency situations are frightening for everyone concerned. If your pet has an accident we always recommend that you call your vet immediately for help. However, forewarned is forearmed and knowing what to do in an emergency could make all the difference and even save your pet’s life. The most common injuries we see are broken bones, poisoning, seizures and collapse. Basic first aid training teaches owners how to safely move their pet after an accident, stop bleeding, bandage

the affected areas, deal with seizures and most importantly how and when to seek help. The hazards that pets are exposed to increase during the summer months with insect bites (even snake bites occasionally) and heatstroke coming into play. For instance, did you know that dogs only sweat through their paws and their tongue and are therefore much more likely to suffer from heatstroke than we are? If you would like to learn more about basic first aid for cats and dogs, we are hosting an evening on June 7 at our head office in Whitchurch, Bristol. A stitch in time for A Keynsham couple liked a fabric shop so much that when they heard it was about to close they decided to buy it. Fabrics Plus was run by Brigitte Parker for 30 years, mostly in Keynsham before it moved to Downend six years ago when work began on Keynsham Civic Centre. She was ready to retire but could not find a buyer, so told our sister paper Downend Voice that it would have to shut. But the shop in Badminton Road has now been bought by customers Sarah and Robin Honeywill. Sarah is a keen seamstress, who has been sewing since she was five years old and runs her own sewing and crafts business online. She makes everything from quilts and curtains to children’s clothes. Sarah said: “The shop is where I’ve bought all my supplies for my sewing. I thought, ‘It can’t shut – we need to buy it’, so we did. We couldn’t bear to see it close. I feel a bit like Victor Kiam,

who liked his shaver so much he bought the company.” Robin and Sarah plan to continue to employ the eight parttime staff who currently work at Fabrics Plus. Sarah paid tribute to the staff’s knowledge, saying: “You can come in here and say ‘I want to make a quilt’ and they will tell you what to buy – people here will know the answers. You don’t need to go on Google, you can come here and chat.” Robin has worked in sales for 25 years and was looking for a new challenge after years on the road as a rep. He is also a trained upholsterer, having developed an interest through his parents’ business, Honeywill Antiques, which traded in Clifton in the 1970s and 1980s. Robin said: “Sarah was a regular customer, and where else in the Bristol area would she be able to go to get the fabric she needed? The only way to do it was to take over.

fabric shop as couple step in to save it

Keynsham couple Sarah and Robin Honeywill are the new owners of the well-established Fabrics Plus shop “There’s so much in the press about the high street struggling, it’s hugely important that small independent businesses are supported. This is a success story – this business is a good business

and we want to see the high street continue to boom.” The changeover between owners was set to take place over the Spring Bank Holiday, with Mrs Parker’s last day on Satur-

day, May 26, and the Honeywills opening for business for the first time on Tuesday, May 29. Sarah and Robin intend to keep things as they are at first but, after they have settled in,

they have plans to start running sewing classes, possibly in the evenings. If those are a success, more could follow, including classes for children. Mrs Parker said: “I am very happy that Robin and Sarah are taking over the business; they are lovely people and I am sure they will continue to grow Fabrics Plus as they have lots of ideas for taking it forward. I have no doubt that with their enthusiasm and public support Fabrics Plus will be in Downend high street for many years to come.”

Go-ahead for community’s plan to reopen its post office A community’s “unique” proposal to save the village post office has been given the go-ahead. Post Office Ltd gave its backing on May 17 to plans to reopen a branch in Saltford inside the village’s communityrun library in Bath Road. The venture will be overseen by a not-for-profit subsidiary of Saltford Community Association, which runs Saltford Hall, and the counter will be staffed by parttime clerks. The move was prompted by the closure of the post office branch inside Saltford Flowers in Bath Road in December. Volunteers behind the project say it is still likely to take up to three months to get it off the ground as they work with Post Office Ltd on getting infrastructure in place and to recruit and train staff.

The counter will be inside Saltford Library in Bath Road A spokesperson said: “In the meantime we need to arrange funds in order to cover costs of

setting up, including purchase of stock such as greeting cards and stationery items. We will be organising fundraising events and launching a ‘Friends of’ appeal.” The spokesperson added that, according to Post Office Ltd, a community post office combined with a community-run library was unique in the South West. The scheme has the support of Saltford Parish Council and B&NES Council, which will be transferring the library to the community in coming months. It is planned that the post office counter will be open for around 26 hours a week spread over Monday to Saturday, with the library eventually operating at the same times. Recruitment for a counter clerk will begin shortly, with plans to establish the post as

a job share in order to provide cover for holidays. Previous post office experience is not essential as training will be provided and a full job description is available by emailing chair@saltfordhall. co.uk The spokesperson added: “Over the next three months we look forward to developing and growing a unique communityowned and run operation, serving the needs of the local community and anyone passing through Saltford.”

Plastic campaign targets second store Photo: Now and for Always Photography

Keynsham campaigners have held a second day of action aimed at getting supermarkets to drastically cut the amount of plastic they use. Around 60 people met at the town’s Waitrose store on May 12 to buy food and then remove all of the packaging at the checkouts and hand it back to staff. The group also used the demonstration to launch a call for Bath and North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council to help Keynsham become “plastic-free” by tackling single-use plastic cups and containers. Organisers from the Keynsham Plastic Re-Action campaign said they were joined by more supporters after news of their first demonstration at Tesco Keynsham made headlines around the world and a video of the event went viral online. A spokesperson for the group said: “Many shoppers had heard of our campaign and all were well aware of the issue of plastic packaging – and 80 per cent were extremely positive about the campaign. Some fruit and veg was available without plastic wrapping, which was good to see, but still the majority of fresh items can only be bought prewrapped.” She added members of the group and the store’s assistant manager are hoping to arrange a meeting to discuss the issue. A petition was also signed by more than 100 people backing the call to local councils for action on plastic. The petition is now online at the In Your Area

Keynsham Plastic Re-Action campaigners outside the town’s Waitrose store at their second demonstration website at https://bit.ly/2s5FX82 or visit the Keynsham Plastic ReAction Facebook page for more information. Campaigners will also be inviting people to sign at the group’s next demonstration, which this time will be held at Sainsbury’s in Market Walk, Keynsham, on June 16 from 10am to 12.30pm. The campaign’s organisers say its aims are to get supermarkets to reduce plastic packaging as a matter of urgency, to reveal how much plastic they use to parliament, and to pay more towards its safe disposal.

n NEWS Workers at a Keynsham care home have announced a series of strikes this month in a dispute over pay and working hours. A number of care staff at Charlton House, in Hawthorns Lane, will be among more than 100 Sirona employees across Bath and North East Somerset who plan to walk out on June 6 for 24 hours, which will then be followed by a series of shorter walkouts every other day for the rest of the month, the union Unison says. The workers had been “left with no choice but to go on strike”, a union spokesman said. Sirona said, however, it was doing it all it could to avert industrial action while it did understand the impact of changes it was “having to make” on staff. The dispute centres on plans by Sirona to switch from paid to unpaid breaks for residential and extra care service employees – a move Unison says would mean less pay or longer hours for the same money. Unison organiser John Drake said: “We’ve negotiated with Sirona for months, but the pay

11

Care home staff to walk out in dispute over pay changes cut is still on the table. These staff cannot afford to take a pay cut. Most of them are women, doing the lion’s share of caring in their own homes as well. Extra shifts are unworkable.” The union has called on Bath and North East Somerset Council, which funds Sirona, to step in to fund what it claims is a £170,000 shortfall in Sirona’s budget. A spokesperson for B&NES Council said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council has not reduced the amount given to Sirona for these services. The council has also invested a further £700,000 to modernise the community resource centres. “Like all local authorities, the council has a duty under the Care Act to make sure people continue to have their care needs met when the regular service that supports them is interrupted. Sirona also has a responsibility

to support this and has given assurance that care services will continue to be provided.” The care facilities that will be affected if the strikes go ahead are Avondown House, Cleeve Court, the Orchard and St John’s Court in Bath, Greenacres in Midsomer Norton and Keynsham’s Charlton House. Sirona care & health chief executive Janet Rowse said: “We are saddened that some of the staff in our residential and extra care homes have voted for strike action but we do understand the impact that the changes we are having to make will have for many of them and we respect their right to protest. “Our first priority is always for the safety and care of our residents and tenants and we are making sure that they will continue to be safe and supported when a strike takes place.

“The issue on which we have failed to agree relates to moving staff in residential and extra care services from paid to unpaid breaks when they work more than six hours. This is consistent with other providers of residential and extra care services and with other staff within Sirona. “However, we are also doing all we can to see if industrial action can still be averted; we have recently tried to find a way forward with the help of conciliation via the independent organisation ACAS. “The care provided by our staff is phenomenal and it is with great reluctance that we do anything which impacts directly on them. “We do, however, need to live within our means whilst finding a way of continuing to provide high quality care within our reduced level of resources.”

Nature challenge unearths 291 species Nature spotters in Keynsham have helped the Bristol and Bath region secure top spot in a Europe-wide contest to find the most wildlife species in a fourday challenge. Members of the Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham group visited four local wildlife hotspots on April 28 to record as many creatures and plants as they could as part of the City Nature Challenge. The Humpty Dumps near the bottom of Durley Lane was the first stop, followed by the former site of Keynsham Primary School. Keynsham Memorial Park was the first afternoon stop and the day finished in Manor Road Community Woodland. Sightings in various areas from the other three days were also added to the final tally. A spokesperson said: “It was a bit of a damp, cool day so insects were at a low level. Nevertheless, by searching for other groups such as birds, snails, flowers,

Primroses and a mullein moth were among the wild species spotted in Keynsham trees, ferns, pondlife, mammals and fungi, an impressive list of 291 species was achieved. If only the sun came out we would surely have topped 300 by adding a few butterflies and other insects.” Among the highlights were two kingfishers, wood anemone, Bath asparagus (a nationally rare plant but frequent around Keynsham), foxes and badgers. The spokesperson added: “This demonstrates a healthy mix

of wildlife in our area, which is something we need to cherish. On the negative side the invasive Himalayan balsam was found in two spots and pond dipping in the Memorial Park achieved nothing at all, which indicates a high level of pollution. This has been reported to Bath and North East Somerset Council for investigation. “We’re thinking of looking at other Keynsham spots in June so if you are interested, please

contact keynshamawt@gmail. com. Will it be possible to bring the total up to 400?” In total 1,134 different species were recorded across the Bristol and Bath region over the fourday challenge. The Festival of Nature is taking place in Bath and Bristol between June 2 and June 10 – visit www.bnhc.org. uk/festival-of-nature/ for more details. Back to Nature column: Page 33

Church welcomes all to enjoy popular fete St John’s Church is once again inviting the community to enjoy its annual fete – complete with tower tours and the popular teddy bear zip-wire. The grounds around the church will be filled with stalls, including a coconut shy, gifts, plants, books and food, while tea and cake will also be served in the parish hall. A local jazz band will entertain the crowds and there will also be the chance to win prizes in a raffle.

Visitors will also be able to climb the church tower to take in the view across Keynsham and beyond while youngsters can bring a teddy (big enough to fit the harness) to put on the zip-wire ride down to the ground – with each bear getting a certificate. The children’s corner will also offer face-painting and a bouncy castle. The fete will take place on Saturday, June 23, from 2pm to 4.30pm.

Historic ‘Abbot’s Seat’ restored for permanent flood memorial

Volunteers are preparing to unveil a permanent memorial to the Great Flood of 1968 as work continues on restoring Keynsham’s historic County Bridge stone. Working with staff from the B&NES Heritage Services department, members of Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society have been busy removing 500 years of accumulated grime from the former landmark, known to older residents as the Abbot’s Chair. The stone was built into the north parapet of the ancient County Bridge on the Bitton Road and was reputed to have come from Keynsham Abbey. Along with the bridge, it was swept away by the flood but was recovered and has been kept in the council’s archaeology store.

The County Bridge stone was recovered after the 1968 flood The stone will form the centrepiece of the memorial, which will be installed in Keynsham Memorial Park. The design incorporates the stone and an engraved plaque. Funding for the project,

which also involves a specialist archaeology company and a builder, is being raised by the history society, which launched a £5,000 public appeal in October. Chairman Richard Dyson said: “We have been very pleased to receive many donations from local residents and businesses and with the support given to the project by Keynsham Town Council. “However, we still have a gap between the expected cost and our fund total, so fundraising needs to continue.” The society is producing a brochure about the flood, which will be on sale later this month. Anyone who would like to support the appeal can download a form at www.keysalthist.org.uk or pick one up from Keynsham Town Council’s offices in Temple Street.

‘Miserable car park needs revamp now’ A Keynsham town centre car park has been branded a “disgrace” and “unwelcoming” to visitors. Members of the local Liberal Democrat group are calling on Bath and North East Somerset Council to revamp the Civic Centre car park and improve signage for drivers and pedestrians. They say there is no signage showing motorists where to go as they approach the building or to point people walking from the car park in the direction of the shops, leisure centre, library or other amenities. A sign near the former fire station also refers to free parking in green bays that no longer exist – which B&NES says will be removed after a public consultation on parking is completed.

Andy Halliday, Keynsham Liberal Democrats vice chair, said “This is a miserable car park. Temple Street traders who pay significant business rates are crying out for support and the revamp of the leisure centre will bring many more visitors. “The Conservative-run B&NES Council needs to do much more to make this car park attractive to shoppers and visitors and take the pressure off the Ashton Way car park. The Civic Centre car park is a disgrace to Keynsham.” The group is now calling for funding generated from neighbouring developments to be spent on improvements to the Civic Centre site. Andy Wait, a local campaigner, said: “I know residents of the town who say they don’t shop on the High

June, 2018 Street because they can't find anywhere to park. Here is a chance for B&NES to make a difference and help support the retailers and businesses in a real way with new signage that encourages the use of the Civic Centre car park and allow more people to find parking close to the shops.” Signs directing drivers to the Civic Centre car park are installed at the junctions of High Street and Charlton Road, Charlton Road and Ashton Way, Ashton Way and Rock Road, Rock Road and Temple Street and in front of the former fire station. A B&NES Council spokesperson said: “Signage directing motorists to the car parks has recently been improved, in response to feedback from the public. “The reference to the green bays is expected to be removed when the signage is reviewed and updated in conjunction with the outcome from the parking charge proposals which are currently out to consultation. “We continue to monitor the situation.”

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

I

guess we are all hoping that the summer is not over with just yet, although it’s no fun walking round in a stab vest in the blistering midday heat. The change in weather brings out a change in most people’s wardrobes, which seems to have a knock-on effect on their standards when driving. It becomes a lot more common that people choose not to wear their seat belts when the weather is hot. And although I grant you they can be uncomfortable, they do save lives and should not be disregarded just because it’s a bit warmer. The penalty for not wearing your seat belt is a non-endorsable fine of £100, with the same going to the driver for any under-16s not wearing their seat belt in the

vehicle. With costs like this it could be very expensive, so please make sure you insist on everyone wearing them. n This leads me directly onto the use of vehicles with modifications in and around Keynsham. The better weather also brings out the urge to show off in vehicles, with reports of a number of younger drivers racing around the streets, causing their vehicles to backfire and generally being antisocial. As we did last year, we will be targeting these people and looking to use our police powers to deal with them. Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 gives us a power to seize any vehicle being used in an antisocial manner. Also, any modifications to a vehicle should be disclosed to the vehicle’s insurance company as it may invalidate the insurance on the vehicle. This would also give us a power to seize it. If we do seize the vehicle under either of these methods, the

17

removal and storage is all at the owner’s expense, not including any fine that we issue. As Keynsham expands as a town we need to work together to make it a safe environment for us all to live in. n Keynsham’s green spaces have been well used with the change in weather but we have received a number of complaints about littering, with piles of rubbish being left where groups have been gathering during this time. Can we please make sure that once we have enjoyed the open spaces that we clear up after ourselves. If there are not enough bins at the location you frequent then please report it to the council to see if we can get additional ones put in place or take your rubbish with you. n Social media issues have been rearing their ugly head again and I make no apologies for repeating my warnings about this. We have had more problems in our

local area with children sharing inappropriate images and videos with each other. The making and sharing of these is an offence which carries severe penalties. These offences are likely to see involved parties getting a criminal conviction and could see offenders placed on the sex offenders’ register. If you have children, please check their phones and make sure you have an understanding of any applications that they use. A simple bit of intervention could prevent them getting into trouble. Once an image or video is out on the web then it cannot be controlled and can be used, copied and distributed endlessly. Education will stop our young people becoming victims. n As always, if you need to raise any problems or concerns then make contact with us through the neighbourhood pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website or call us on 101 for any non-emergency matters.

Litter data to give a picture of ‘legal high’ use in town

A picture of the use of a “legal high” across Keynsham is being built up with the help of volunteer litter-pickers. Discarded nitrous oxide – or laughing gas – canisters have become an increasingly familiar sight in towns and cities and now a member of the Keynsham Wombles has begun gathering information on the number of canisters found in the town and the locations. Although the substance has legal uses, such as in medical procedures and in some food packaging, the Psychoactive Substances Act of 2016 made it illegal to supply nitrous oxide for human consumption. The data will be used to get an impression of the level of usage in the town and can be shared with youth workers and police. Sightings can be emailed

to womble@transitionkeynsham. org Meanwhile, smokers in the High Street are being given

an extra visual reminder to put their cigarette butts in the bin as part of the group’s #noplaceforlitter campaign. Paw

June, 2018 print stickers have been placed on the pavements leading to the street’s bins, where posters are displayed next to the bins’ attached ashtrays. The stickers contain information about the risks posed by discarded cigarette butts to wildlife and the environment. A member of the group said: “This is part of our master plan to reduce the amount of cigarette litter in our town, which in parts is a significant issue. We have also commissioned hand-painted ashtrays from Banwell Pottery, a social enterprise, and will be giving these to local cafes and pubs with outside space later in the summer.” It’s a busy time for the Wombles, who will be helping to keep Keynsham Memorial Park clean during Keynsham Music Festival, carrying out litter-picking duties and raising the group’s profile on the Saturday, Sunday and the Monday after. Anyone who would like to get involved in Keynsham Wombles can email the group at womble@ transitionkeynsham.org

‘Crimefighter Bob’ remembered at policing awards Keynsham’s late “Crimefighter Bob” has been remembered at an awards ceremony for local policing heroes. Avon and Somerset Constabulary and Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens hosted the Be Proud Awards on May 17 to celebrate the achievements of colleagues working across the force. During the evening at Cadbury House Hotel in Congresbury, tributes were paid to Bob Eastaugh for his work founding and co-ordinating a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the Charlton Road area for many years before his death in January. His wife Anne and son Mark attended the event to accept an award on Bob’s behalf for

Bob Eastaugh pictured in 2016 receiving a Pride Award from PCC Sue Mountstevens his volunteer work in making the community safer. Bob was previously awarded a PCC Pride Award by Ms Mountstevens for his role in 2016.

19

Mrs Eastaugh later presented the Police Support Volunteer of the Year Award to Jennifer Hill in memory of Bob. Jennifer has volunteered with the force for more than five years, recently becoming a volunteer restorative justice facilitator as well as co-ordinating her local Neighbourhood Watch. She said: “It’s nice to think that constabulary colleagues really respect you and see what you do, even it if is behind the scenes. It is a lovely honour.” Among the individuals honoured at the awards were Special Constable of the Year Tony Millington, Response Officer of the Year PC Joseph Iles, Neighbourhood Officer of the Year PC Ross Calderwood, Investigator of the Year DC Lorraine Welsh and Police Staff Member of the Year Helen Cuthbert. There was also an award for the force’s HQ Operational Planning team, which was named Policing Team of the Year for its work supporting major events such as royal visits, the Balloon Fiesta and Glastonbury Festival. The Specialist Operations

Award went to Operation Blueline, which recently featured in BBC3’s documentary Drugsland for its role working with communities and tackling drug dealers. More than 230 nominations were made for the awards and Ms Mountstevens said: “I always consider it a privilege to be in a room with so many inspirational, selfless and dedicated people. To everyone who works relentlessly to support the policing effort, you make such a difference, thank you to all of you. “The Be Proud Awards are really important to us because the nominations come from members of the public, internal colleagues and external partners. I want to thank everyone who took the time to contact us with your compliments and nominations.” BBC Radio Bristol’s Emma Britton compered the evening and Olympian Amy Williams MBE, presenter Carol Vorderman MBE, comedian Stephen Merchant and Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis sent messages to the finalists via video.

Councillors call for ‘community toilets’ Keynsham Town Council is being asked to back a “community toilet” scheme to increase the number of public conveniences available. Under the plan, participating businesses would allow people to use their toilets during normal working hours without the need to make a purchase. A motion that will be tabled at the council’s June meeting says: “Such a scheme will be of benefit to the public, help make Keynsham an even more welcoming place to visit, and encourage footfall and goodwill for local businesses.” The shops and businesses taking part could be identified by a window sticker or poster and be listed on the town council website, the motion suggests. “Community toilet” schemes currently operate in a number of other towns and cities, including Frome and Gloucester. Stefan Edwards, the owner of Temple Street Canteen, said: “We’re always happy to let people use the toilet without any pressure to make a purchase, so would be happy to be included. I know that these kind of schemes have been successful elsewhere. “Our attitude in business is always to make friends first and make money second and feel that the goodwill is valuable, as someone who uses the loo might come back for a cuppa some other time.” The motion asking the council to introduce a scheme “to provide clean, safe and, where possible, accessible toilets in convenient locations across Keynsham” will be tabled by

Keynsham town councillors David Brassington and Hal MacFie with other campaigners in Keynsham town centre Liberal Democrat town councillors David Brassington and Hal MacFie. The town council will next meet on Tuesday, June 12.

Care home tackles loneliness over lunch

Lynne, right, with Julie from Parkinson’s UK

A Saltford care home is aiming to tackle loneliness in the community by inviting older residents to join them for lunch. Kingfisher Lodge’s Don’t Dine Alone initiative is aimed at older people who live alone who would like to join residents for a free three-course meal. Vicky Thorne, customer relationship manager at Barchester Healthcare, which runs Kingfisher Lodge, in Chestnut Walk, said people living with dementia and their partners would also be very welcome as the home has the facilities and staff to meet their needs. She said: “The idea behind this is that people can come in for company and make friends within the home. A big passion of mine is to ensure that when residents move into a care home their normal community engagement does not stop and if we can help people in the community then it makes sense.” She added: “I want carers to walk through the door and feel a

n NEWS Dementia charity celebrates new link

Douglas, Gabby Smith and 14-month-old Leo at Charterhouse Avon specialist dementia care home

Babies help older people with dementia in ‘uplifting’ scheme A new scheme that sees mums and babies spending time with older people living with dementia at a Keynsham care home is being hailed a success. The tots and their mothers visit Charterhouse at the Chocolate Quarter every other Monday as part of an initiative launched by St Monica Trust to bring together different generations. It comes after the trust’s Cote Lane retirement community featured in the Channel 4 show Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds, in which a group of older

people and children spent time together over a six-week period, an experience that proved to benefit both the physical and emotional wellbeing of the older volunteers. The mothers’ and babies’ visits to Charterhouse have been so popular that the initiative is now being rolled out across the trust’s other care homes in Bristol and North Somerset. Helen Webster, whose one year-old son Daniel took part in one of the sessions, said it had been a unique experience. She said: “Daniel really

enjoyed being around people he never normally gets to see, the old people were fantastic with the young children. It benefits both age groups in different ways and was a really uplifting experience.” Clare Tucker, service lead at Charterhouse Avon, said: “The group has really enhanced residents’ wellbeing. Residents who have previously relied on non-verbal communication have been able to find words and sentences to speak to the babies, and frequently ask when the next visit will be.”

A charity that aims to make Keynsham and Saltford “dementia-friendly” communities is celebrating a new partnership with Coventry Building Society. The Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (KDAA) has been named community partner, after staff at the town’s branch forged links with the charity. The team there have already shown their support by attending a play – Don’t Leave Me Now – about dementia, which was brought to Keynsham by the charity. The KDAA aims to raise awareness of dementia, offering education and training for the community, as well as running Music for the Mind sessions at St Dunstan’s Church hall for people living with dementia and their carers twice a month. Chairman Alan Hale said: “As a charity group we are absolutely over the moon that Coventry Building Society have stepped forward to help us in our aims and objectives. This is a big step up for us and we are most grateful.” He added: “We are looking forward to the year ahead working with and also encouraging other local traders and businesses to engage with us to make life easier for those living with dementia and who will without doubt be visiting the shops and businesses in town.” Emma Nye from Coventry Building Society said: “We hope that together we can achieve good things, through raising awareness of the charity’s work, fundraising, by our staff becoming Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends and encouraging other businesses to engage as well.”

Some familiar faces at Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s royal wedding fete, left; the sun shone for the event at Scout HQ

Royal date brings communities together The bunting and flags were out in Keynsham and Saltford as people came together to watch the royal wedding unfold at Windsor Castle on May 19. As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, tied the knot, the ceremony was screened live to those who gathered at Keynsham Scout HQ for a royal wedding-themed fete. Student volunteer Molly Hale and her supporters threw the party in aid of Keynsham and District Mencap Society, organising music from DJ Barry, a barbecue, raffle, tombola, refreshments, a bouncy castle and a range of stalls. There were also visits from the police and fire services, who showed guests around their vehicles. The event raised around £500 on the day and fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “Huge thanks to everyone who helped out on the day – they’re

From scarecrows to floral art – get creative for Bloom! with chair Denise James Scarecrow Trail

We have 19 entries to date and would love to have more for our trail. We hope it will be as successful as our Floral Bike Trail. We even have a group of residents who have entered their street, so we are really looking forward to seeing their scarecrow theme. Entry forms can still be collected from Keynsham Town Council’s office in Temple Street. This is also a great opportunity for local traders, particularly along the High Street, to take part and create a small scarecrow display in their shop window. Closing date for entries is June 19.

Children’s Scarecrow Colouring Competition

There is still time to pop along to the town council office and pick up your scarecrow colouring poster. We will be presenting prizes and certificates at Keynsham Farmer’s Market on Saturday, July 14.

Poppy Cascade

Regular meetings are being held between the Keynsham in Bloom committee and Keynsham Royal British Legion. At our last meeting we were joined by Grenville Jones, the well-known founder of the Goldies Charity, the Sing and Smile sessions and, of course, the Goldies Shop. He is leading a primary schools World War I project and has joined our team in planning

some very special commemorative events in Keynsham commencing Monday, November 5. Grenville updated us on his schools singing project, in which Year 4 and 5 pupils are learning wartime medleys to perform at a concert at St John’s Church on Friday, November 9. Full details of the Goldies schools project can be found at www.ourmemories.org.uk. The pupils will also be encouraged to wear WWI clothes. Grenville is also working with primary schools across England and Wales and encouraging them to take part in the Our Memories campaign. We now have 5,400 knitted poppies and counting, and we estimate we will need as many poppies again in order to create the poppy cascade. The first of a number of workshops is being planned for the end of June, and these sessions will take place during the day, evenings and weekends. A number of people who have knitted poppies have said they would like help with putting the cascade together. It’s going to be a mammoth task, so as the saying goes: “More hands less work!”

10-year anniversary of Keynsham in Bloom – Floral Art Festival

We are holding a Floral Art Festival to celebrate 10 wonderful years of Keynsham in Bloom, which will be the theme for the event. It will take place at the Victoria Methodist Church. The art festival will be open to exhibitors irrespective of where they live and the church will be open for public viewing on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14. There will be flower demonstrations on both days, which will be an opportunity for people to brush up on their flower arranging skills and meet members of the local floral arranging clubs. We would like to thank Ruth Hutchings for co-ordinating and advising us on this event. Application forms, together with rules and regulations, are available from Keynsham Town Council office, 15-17 Temple Street, BS31 1HF.

More Scouts go for Chief Scout’s Gold Award

We are delighted to report that two more Keynsham Scouts have achieved the Chief Scout’s Gold Award in recent weeks. This is the highest award possible in the Scout Section. Eva and Kathryn have undertaken new personal challenges, hiking expeditions and learnt new skills before demonstrating how they can be used in real life. These awards take nearly three years to complete and are well deserved. Congratulations! It’s an interesting fact that so far in 2018 more female Keynsham Scouts have achieved this award than male Scouts. Many people are not aware that Scouting offers the same opportunities for females as males. Demand by young people for Scouting continues to grow and Keynsham Scouts would love to increase the number of female leaders in all sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers). If you are over 18, fancy having some fun and would like to know more, email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk – we would love to hear from you.

Campsite – and car park – turn 40

When Keynsham needed car parking, Chelwood Scout Campsite was born 40 years ago! We wonder how many people can remember when what is now the car park in Ashton Way opposite the Scout HQ was actually Scout grounds, overgrown

Eva and Kathryn and with a pond that flooded! Before that it housed the original Scout HQ. Well, just over 40 years ago the land was sold to provide car parking when the new leisure centre was built and the money used to buy a campsite. This year Chelwood Scout Campsite is 40 years old and we have produced a special badge to commemorate the occasion. In that time thousands of young people have had hours of fun and adventure at the site, trees that were no more than six inches when they were planted are now 20 feet tall. It is an oasis of wildlife

Academy awarded £120,000 for eco lighting scheme

New lighting will enable a Keynsham school to cut its energy bills by thousands of pounds each year. More than 1,400 LED light replacement fittings will be installed at Broadlands Academy over the summer after the school was awarded £120,808 for the green initiative. It is estimated the change will save the school more than £23,000 on electricity bills every year, as well as improving lighting throughout the academy and cutting CO² emissions by more than 80 tonnes. The money has been awarded through Salix Energy Efficiency Funding under an initiative that provides interest-free government funding to the public sector for green schemes. In total, the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) has secured nearly £500,000 to replace lighting systems at six academies.

James Hall, principal at Broadlands, said: “This is fantastic news and the new LED lighting will have a lasting benefit for the students at Broadlands Academy. This is a project that supports the global environment, alongside improving the outstanding learning environment at Broadlands. The education for students and staff will be even brighter and we thank AET and Salix for their support.” Julian Drinkall, CEO for Academies Enterprise Trust, said: “At a time when school budgets are under significant pressure it can be very challenging to find the money to deliver cost savings whilst also considerably improving the school environment. I am delighted that we have been able work with Broadlands Academy and secure government financial support to make this a reality in time for the new school year.”

Salon relaunch gives air ambulance a boost A team of hair stylists celebrating the relaunch of a Keynsham salon decided to use the event to help a life-saving charity. Jodie Hawkins took over the management of Cocoa Hair Design at the start of the year and recently welcomed customers and friends to the Station Road premises to toast the new look. During the evening, there was a cake sale and guests took part in a raffle with prizes donated by Bonzo Lounge, Polkadot, Trigaci, CM3, Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Costa and Subway, pictured right. Jodie said she was delighted that the event raised £720 for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) in memory of a local man the crew attended. She said: “It was great to get so much local support for the raffle and we would also like to thank our clients and family and friends for helping to raise a great sum of money.

“Now Cocoa has a new look there will be lots of offers and exciting things ahead to look out for, including a new hair product range that is vegan friendly and a focus on less plastic with discounted shampoo refills.” The GWAAC critical care team attended 1,824 call-outs last year and needs to raise £3 million every year to stay operational – find out more at greatwesternairambulance.com

‘Report shows school off to a good start’ Leaders at a Keynsham secondary school say its first Ofsted report shows it has “come a long way” since it opened its doors in 2015. Inspectors said IKB Academy principal Debbie Gibbs is a “strong leader” who has built a “popular and successful school from scratch”, while a number of parents described her as “inspirational”. While inspectors told the school that overall it “requires improvement”, the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, as well as the outcomes for its students, were rated “good”. Students’ good behaviour is described as a strength of the school with many going on to gain places in Russell Group universities and at Oxbridge while others have secured apprenticeships in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) industries, the report notes. IKB Academy is part of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which the inspectors see as having added value to the school by ensuring that the academic curriculum is broad and balanced, with students able to study other subjects alongside their STEM courses at Wellsway School on the same site. IKB currently has 170 students, aged 14 to 19, and continues to grow as it moves towards its capacity of 300, with students from Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. To improve, Ofsted says the school must promote the spiritual, moral, social and cul-

Leaders must also improve teachers’ checking of students’ work in the sixth form and enforce high standards in health and safety in practical subjects at all times. Commenting on the report, Mrs Gibbs said: “We have come a long way in just two years and our first Ofsted report recognises how far we have travelled. I’m particularly pleased that the quality of our teaching and learning has been recognised, alongside the additional opportunities our students get in their STEM subjects.” Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, which runs IKB, said: “I and the trust board are delighted by what Debbie and her team at IKB have achieved so far in a short space of time. “Debbie is a dedicated prin-

cipal who has worked tirelessly to start a school from scratch, supported by a talented staff team. We’re very proud of the school and the opportunities it provides for youngsters who have an interest in STEM subjects. Schools like IKB are vital for the future success of Greater Bristol

– with its engineering and tech businesses – and our country, and it’s encouraging to see it has been recognised as getting off to a good start. “We have no doubt that IKB will continue go from strength to strength, reflected in growing student numbers.”

Members of the Rotary Club of Keynsham promoting the plant fair to High Street shoppers

Plant sale bears fruit despite competition! Despite competition from a rather high-profile wedding on the same day, the Rotary Club of Keynsham still gave a royal welcome to many supporters at its annual plant fair on May 19 at the Fear Hall. Although the High Street was visibly quiet, the club still managed to raise just over £900 from the sale of a wide range of bedding plants, which will be topped up to £1,000 and donated to the Bristol Heart Institute. A spokesperson said: “Grateful thanks are due to our

friends and supporters, our suppliers, Broadleaze Nurseries and Sheila’s Plants, and Andrews Property Group. We will be back next year so hope we will see more of the public supporting local charities.” Earlier in the month, Rotary members enjoyed a fundraising tea party hosted by Jane and Rob Thurston at their Willsbridge home. The event raised £300 for the Rotary Foundation to help in the final push to eradicate polio worldwide.

BATH-RACECOURSE.CO.UK

t’s been a long ride of ups and downs for the Marvel Cinematic Universe – for every mind-blowing Captain America: The Winter Soldier there’s a confusing and boring Thor: The Dark World. But now after 10 years of set-up, recurring directors the Russo Brothers take the helm for the third in the Avengers series. Infinity War (12A) sees the Avengers reunite when the universe is threatened by the mad titan Thanos, played excellently by Josh Brolin. Poor villains have been a common issue with these films but Thanos rectifies the prior mistakes of the franchise and brings gravitas and sympathy to a villain who believes his vision of the future is for the betterment of the universe. The most ambitious MCU film yet, Infinity War sees a total of 21 superheroes all contribute to the story and yet the film never feels overstuffed or convoluted, each character has their moment to shine, even previously minor characters such as Mantis (Pom Klementieff ) and Scarlet

Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The film succeeds at presenting real stakes and possible consequences should the heroes fail, something that previous entries have often failed to do. The cinematography is well done, the camera work is steady and smooth and all the performances are appropriately fantastic. The spectacle on display is unmatched, the “epicness” and excitement that this film brings is truly something special. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo deserve extra credit for crafting a film that didn’t fall to the pressure of the fan expectations, but instead exceeded them in genuinely surprising ways. In conclusion Avengers: Infinity War is a dazzling, surprising and riveting time at the cinema and delivers on every fan’s expectations. The performances, visual effects and direction are the best they’ve ever been in these films and though it does not quite reach the cinematic heights of The Winter Soldier it is one of the best films to come out of this franchise.  4.5/5

F

ollowing on from the successful bioblitz at the end of April, some members of the Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham group were treated to a more informal survey of the extraordinary wildlife of Dolebury Warren on the Mendips, writes chairman Dave Sage. Led by wildlife expert and old friend Rupert Higgins, we ascended the precipitous steps into glorious spring sunshine and a glorious array of lime-tolerant (and not so tolerant) grassland plants. Rupert’s identification and background knowledge of the plants and the history of the area are extraordinary. He explained that Dolebury Warren hides the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, used more as a status symbol for local chieftains, and possibly as a lookout post, than as a permanent settlement, because of the lack of water on top of the hill. The word

unday, May 10, was ideal walking weather, so, as expected, there was a big turnout for our most recent walk. Almost 30 people met at the Memorial Park cafe and, with Dawn Drury in charge, we set off along the River Chew towards Albert Mill. As with all walks, we had some new faces among the group, including a family of four. Along the way we were treated to an abundance of wildlife, including our first sighting this year of a family of mallards. It didn't seem too long before we reached our destination of Burnett Woods. The reason for the walk was to see the bluebells in bloom and we weren’t disappointed, as the whole woods were carpeted with the flower. From Chewton Place we crossed over the river and headed back on the eastern side, arriving in Keynsham via the Steel Mills at exactly 12.30pm. Everyone, as usual, enjoyed the two-and-a-halfhour walk.

Sunday, June 17 Meet at the Memorial Park gates at 9.50am to catch the bus into Bath, and then undertake the 6.5-mile Bath Skyline walk, finishing back in Bath at about 2pm. The walk is described as moderate with some hilly places, and appropriate footwear is essential. If you wish,

you can explore the city at your leisure and make your own way home. Sunday, July 15 Keynsham Scarecrow Walk. Meet at the Memorial Park cafe at 10am for a short walk around town following the Keynsham in Bloom Scarecrow Trail.

Sizing up competition at first horse show!

After six months of planning, May saw the first of three Bitton and District Horse shows come to Keynsham Rugby Ground. More than 600 entries competed in 50 classes on May 6, featuring riders of all ages, from complete novices attending their first horse show, to more experienced riders who gained their second round qualifier to the prestigious Olympia Horse show in London later in the year. Riders were presented with an array of rosettes and trophies during the day and organisers say the show proved to be a big success, with all competitors looking forward to the next event on June 30, from 9am. The team behind the scenes at Bitton and District are now busy putting together the next show, which they say they hope will benefit businesses in Keynsham as it brings in more visitors, as well as the event’s chosen good cause, The Fire Fighters Charity. A spokesperson said: “Our aim at our June show is to gain sponsorship to enable us to give cash prizes to all of our competitors and also support our chosen charity. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a class, championship or ring, or having a trade stand, sponsorship packages start from £10. “We will have the Avon Fire and Rescue Animal and Water Rescue Unit on site at our show between noon and 2pm. Members of the public are welcome to come along and take a look be-

Terri and Kayci play spot the difference at the first Bitton and District Horse Show at Keynsham Rugby Club hind the scenes at the wonderful work they do.” There will also be a fundraising superhero fancy dress class open to all visitors, with or without horses, at 12.15pm with the best five winning a tour of the Avon and Somerset Mounted Police headquarters. The event is free but visitors can make a donation towards The Fire Fighters Charity. Free pitches are also available to smaller charities and fundraising groups who would like to have a stall at June’s show. The spokesperson added: “Some of the proceeds from our show will go towards the start of a new riding club and our future shows, which will encourage and

educate riders of all ages, abilities and those with disabilities to grow in all the disciplines within equestrian sport.” For more information on

pring has been glorious this year, with an abundance of blossom. Bees and butterflies, eager to make the most of this bonanza, are busily flying from garden to garden. Hoverflies, ladybirds and a riot of other insects are all getting in on the act. In May, scientists published an assessment of all life on earth. It’s fascinating, and sobering. The study found that plants account for 82 per cent of all biomass (the total weight of a species) on the planet – that’s 7,500 times more than us. And there are 17 times more insects than people (in weight). Shockingly, it revealed that humans represent 0.01 per cent of life on the planet but are responsible for the loss of 83 per cent of wild mammals and 50 per cent of all plants. Another study showed that climate change will cause a major wipe-out of insects, compounding the severe losses we’re already

Insects such as bees are vital for our food supply seeing. Insects – whether we like them or not! – are the life blood of this planet. They’re vital for our food supply. Without them our ability to inhabit this planet would be severely restricted, if not impossible. There are lots of things that can, and should, be done to protect insects. Some of them are the Government’s responsibility, such as restricting use of pesticides, restoring our soil’s health, protecting hedgerows etc. But there are things we can do at home, too. Leave a patch of longer grass that insects and bugs

can hide in. Have a wildflower patch – you can even grow some in pots on the balcony if you don’t have a garden. Support pesticidefree farming by buying organic fruit and vegetables (even just one swap would make a difference). And when you buy flowers, try and source UK-grown blooms. There are online florists doing this, e.g. Wiggly Wigglers and Organic Blooms, while High Street shop Stone Roses sources local flowers from Upton Cheyney. We can all do our bit to support these vital and under-appreciated creatures.

Anyone interested in helping to shape the way mental health services are delivered in B&NES in the future can take part in a number of workshops being held in Keynsham this month. Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (BaNES CCG) and B&NES Council are inviting views from the public on the way services could be improved and what is done well and are holding three sessions at The Space in Market Walk. The workshops will take place on June 5 from 9am to noon, from 9am to 5pm on June 13 and from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on June 18. They will be looking at issues including how community mental health services can work better together and improving transitions from child services to adult services. Villagers brave chill to admire bluebells

Vivian George Stinchcombe Mr V G Stinchcombe, former head teacher of Chandag Junior School, sadly passed away recently at the age of 90, after a long and happy retirement. He always felt privileged to be the head teacher and enjoyed every day at the school. His distinguished service as the

school’s leader lasted from 1975 until his retirement in 1992. The photographs show him in his role as head teacher at Chandag Junior School and with his leaving cards and presents when he retired. Mr Stinchcombe was also a prominent member of the

Keynsham Rotary Club for 25 years, engaging in many community projects. He was always involved in family life – providing much love, guidance and wisdom. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his family and all who knew him.

Compton Dando villagers set off from St Mary’s Church on a rather overcast and chilly morning for their annual bluebell walk, writes Ros Anstey. The walkers who followed leader Ron Walker ranged in age from eight weeks to mid-80s and were accompanied by dogs of various sizes and breeds. One walker, Jenny Davis, said: “It was a most enjoyable walk and the bluebells were well worth the trip. “We were all welcomed back afterwards to the church for tea and homemade cakes served by Sylvia Box and Elizabeth Penny. “Donations raised from the teas will go to the upkeep of St Mary’s Church,” she said, adding: “A big thank you to all who helped and those who made a wide variety of delicious cakes. “Please join us for Sunday teas at St Mary’s, from 2-5pm through to Monday, August 27, including bank holidays.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

A Rising Man by Abir Mukherjee This crime story was recommended to me by a colleague and I am glad that he did. The story is set in 1920s India, at the height of the British Raj. It introduces us to Captain Sam Wyndham, a World War I veteran and former Scotland Yard detective now based in Calcutta. He has been recruited to a new post in the police force and his feet have barely touched the ground when he is summoned to a murder. The body of a prominent businessman in Calcutta has been found in a very Indian-dominated area with a note left in his mouth which warns the British to quit India. Captain Wyndham is joined by an arrogant British officer, Inspector Digby, and the interesting, British-educated but Indian-born Sergeant Bangerjee. His investigation leads him to Indian nationalists, a train robbery and up to the Governor of Bengal himself. I initially found this book a bit of a slow burn but then realised I was already halfway through and was very intrigued as to how it would play out. The characters are very well laid out and Captain Wyndham is a great hero with quite a few flaws. I particularly liked the description of the British Raj. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have reserved the next in the series.

Adult Non-Fiction

Walking Home and Walking Away by Simon Armitage

In his first book, Simon Armitage decides to walk the Pennine Way as a modern troubadour, reading his poetry in exchange for money and a warm bed every evening. I found the history of the places and the people he meets on the way very interesting. He tells you every detail; from how the public valued his reading to the quality (or not) of his lodgings. If you’re not afraid of the weather up North, the walk could be worth a try. In the second one, he chose to do the coastal walk from Somerset to Cornwall. I found myself more interested by this book because of the setting in the South West. I thought I could even try it. I was expecting descriptions of picturesque and grandiose coastal landscape but it quite quickly turned to all the tragedies the sea brings to Simon’s ears as well as all the pollution that makes him question our responsibilities and our impact on the environment on his daily walk. I would probably still do it, but with a bin bag to pick up any litter on my way… If I had to compare both books I would say the first one is full of first-time experiences (first walking gear, first night at stranger’s place etc) and is a lot funnier. The second one feels like the poet had a mission to let his readers know about his surroundings, but the

poetry produced on the way is richer for the experience. Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant James Martin’s American Adventure, 80 Classic American Recipes by James Martin Following on from the successful TV series, the popular chef James Martin has picked out 80 sumptuous recipes from his American journey. If you think American food is all hamburgers and steaks, think again. James Martin travels coast to coast sampling local food from the Napa Valley to New York state, sharing recipes including pork ribs with apple and fennel; the famous Philly cheesesteak; the ultimate hot dog and some great fish recipes as well. There are also some inspiring ideas for that next barbecue. A mouth-watering book with some stunning photographs and full of great recipes, as well as some new and fresh ideas from an underestimated culinary nation.

The Great Fire of London by Emma Adams and Jason Weston Lewis This is a gorgeously illustrated children’s book about the Great Fire of London. It outlines what London was like in the 17th century before the fire and then gives a day-byday account of how the fire started and spread. It also introduces us to some key characters, including King Charles II and the Mayor of London Sir Thomas Bludworth, who Samuel Pepys called “a silly man”! But the main joy of this book is the illustrations. It is beautifully drawn with lots of orange depicting the flames. A brill read.

Mentoring charity hopes to win votes at the checkouts A charity that provides mentors for young people facing a range of challenges is hoping to win the backing of shoppers in Keynsham and Saltford this month. Mentoring Plus is one of three good causes hoping to receive up to £4,000 from Tesco in the retailer’s Bags for Help scheme, with customers’ votes deciding the amounts that will be awarded. The charity works with young people aged from seven to 21 who need extra support with difficulties in education, at home or with their peers. Adult volunteers are trained to mentor a young person oneto-one for a year, with the focus on getting out and about, trying new things and connecting with their community. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

The Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain, wrongly captioned on this photograph from 1907; surviving parts of the fountain are in a local garden

Visit to Thornbury

Society members visited the town of Thornbury a few weeks ago as the first event in their summer programme. After a look around the town’s comprehensive museum, we were given a guided walk around the town centre and down to the parish church of St Mary and the entrance to Thornbury Castle. The town is now of a similar size to Keynsham, but retains a wealth of old buildings, which makes it much easier to connect with its past and gives it a character and variety of architecture that we have lost.

Keynsham’s Memorial to Queen Victoria

Today, the junction of the Wellsway and Bath Road in Keynsham is

marked with a mini roundabout and often with queues of traffic in every direction. In earlier times, when the roads were places where children could play, this location had features of interest. For many years the centre of the junction was the site of the village pound, a fenced-off space where loose animals could be corralled until their owners reclaimed them on payment of a fee. At a parish council meeting in March 1897 it was decided to make arrangements with the lord of the manor to remove the pound and erect in its place an ornamental lamp and drinking fountain in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s long reign. However, the wheels of bureaucracy turned slowly and by the time the idea came to fruition it

was 1902 and the Queen had died. The pound was moved to land behind the New Inn and the council decided to take over a plot of land at the top of Bath Hill for a drinking fountain as a “Queen Victoria Memorial”, and supply drinking water at the expense of the parish. The unveiling ceremony was planned to be part of the celebrations for the coronation of King Edward VII, but most of these had to be postponed due to the King’s illness. The fountain unveiling went ahead, though, and on June 26 in 1902, Mrs Whittuck, who lived nearby, performed the ceremony and “was handed a glass of water which she drank”. Requirements changed and in February 1930 a suggestion was

made at a parish council meeting to improve the lighting at the top of Bath Hill by converting the Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain into a lamp standard. The fountain was dismantled and there is no record of what happened to most of it, although two pieces of the masonry column have survived and today are used as garden ornaments in one of the nearby houses.

This month’s history walk – Saltford

A reminder that on Sunday, June 10, Roger Wilkes from the society will be leading a guided walk around Saltford village. If you would like to learn something of its history do come along. Meet in The Shallows car park for a start at 2.30pm. There is no charge.

An anchor in the swirl of life

O

ur nation’s mental health and particularly that of our young people is much in the news and in our minds at present. It is very sad to hear both of the tragic stories of individual sorrow and the larger picture of a NHS struggling to cope. The importance of the mind is nothing new; previous generations have known its importance too. John Milton wrote in the 16th century: “The mind is its own place, and in itself it can make a heaven of hell, or a hell of heaven.’” He reminds us, as does our current news, that the mind is a great and fragile power within us for both good and ill.

The idea of an anchor is to hold a ship secure in a storm, or to prevent it drifting onto the rocks until the fog lifts

We are also reminded from time to time that we all have fragile bodies and minds, we all need A&E at some point – and the kindness of those who help us when we fall in the High Street is sometimes noted with thanks on the letters page. We all need support from time to time, whether physical or mental. From the earliest days of the Christian faith, during the Roman Empire, the symbol used by Christians was not a cross, but an anchor. The idea of an anchor is to hold a ship secure in a storm, or to prevent it drifting onto the rocks until the fog lifts. It’s a metaphor for our minds being held secure amidst all the stresses and emotions of life (they can be

stormy at times), and knowing which external voices and internal thoughts are the most trustworthy ones to listen to and follow (in other words to which ones to anchor, in the fog of life). For the Christian the symbol of the anchor is a picture of what it means to be secure in God; to be held fast and safe within our minds; not just holding on, but being held fast too. As the writer in the New Testament (Hebrews chapter 6, verse 19) says, inviting us all to find for ourselves: “We have this hope (in Jesus), a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” Wherever our inner stability comes from, whether religious or not, it is good to have an anchor for our souls and minds.

Keynsham’s Wyevale Garden Centre near Hicks Gate is up for sale with a price tag of £1.3 million. Owner Terra Firma, assisted by specialist property adviser Christie and Co, has put all 145 Wyevale branches across the country on the property market. In the Bristol area, the chain – the largest garden centre operator in the UK – also includes Wyevale Thornbury and Cadbury Garden and Leisure in Congresbury. Christie and Co describes the garden centres as “profitable standalone business opportunities” and Steve Rodell, managing director, added: “The sale of Wyevale Garden Centres presents a unique opportunity for a wide range of buyers from financial institutions, existing garden centre operators, independent business people and entrepreneurs to buy well invested local garden centres within the price range of £200,000 to £35 million.”

Canadian Geese on the River Avon at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park in Keynsham, enjoying a dose of British bank holiday rain People driving higher-polluting cars could have to pay to drive into Bath in future as the council looks to clean up air quality in the city. Studies are now under way, Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced, to investigate possible charges for different kinds of vehicles entering a proposed Clean Air Charging Zone. The local authority has been told by the Government, along with 27 other councils, that several hotspots in the city exceed nitrogen dioxide limits and it must bring them down to acceptable levels by 2021. The council has put forward three options for a charging zone, one of which includes charging drivers of high-polluting cars as well as buses, lorries, taxis and vans. In order to decide which option to implement, including which vehicles will be charged, the council is now trying to establish the minimum charge for drivers that would achieve the necessary reduction in NO₂

Bath considers congestion charges to clean up its air

in the shortest time. As part of the studies, a panel of 1,100 people who drive non-compliant, higher emission cars in the city will be asked about the impact on them of charges ranging from £3 to £13. The aim is to determine what impact a range of different charges might have on the behaviour of drivers, including whether they would pay the charge, swap to public transport,

use park and rides or change their vehicle. Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “A great deal of technical assessment is now under way and the research on what charges would effectively change the behaviour of drivers is part of that work. We want to be open and transparent about this whole process, and keep people informed of the work we’re doing. “It is essential to stress that we have to ask people about charges for statistical purposes but this does not mean the charges quoted in the survey or even charging for cars will be in the final proposal. “Decisions cannot be made about what vehicles will be

included in the CAZ, what charges will be applied, and what exemptions may be offered until the technical and economic assessments, public health impact assessments and public engagement are complete.” The council is also talking to bus operators about applying for government funds to update fleets, or to retro-fit older buses with compliant, cleaner engines. It has also held discussions with taxi drivers and representatives from a range of bodies such as the Road Haulage and Freight Transport Associations. The results and proposed charges for the zone will be published later in the year when people will be able to have their say. Find out more at www. bathnes.gov.uk/breathe.

Hockey club’s pride as four members selected to compete at national level Four hockey players from Keynsham have done their home club proud on the national stage after competing in the Masters’ Home Nations Tournament in May. Keynsham Hockey Club’s Andy Rhys-Jones, Tim Crabbe and Keith Walters were selected to represent Wales 50s at the contest at Southgate Hockey Club in Hertfordshire from May 18 to 20, while James Evans played for the 40s. Results for the sides were mixed with the 50s drawing two games and losing one, showing some great attacking play. The 40s, with a new team, lost all three matches, but got stronger as the tournament went on and took the lead in all three games. All three members of the 50s squad will be playing in the World Cup in Barcelona in late July, while James, last season’s first team vice captain, goes on to play in the over-35s tournament in Belfast. A spokesperson for Keynsham Hockey Club said it was a great accolade to have four members playing in the Home Nations and added that players of all levels were welcome at the club, which is based at Wellsway School. Anyone who would like to join or have a taster session can come along to a session with details available at www. keynshamhockey.club Pictured from left to right are Andy Rhys-Jones, Tim Crabbe, Keith Walters and James Evans

Frys bowlers sitting in seventh after mixed start to league campaign Frys Bowling Club travelled to Knowle ‘B’ on May 17, where the game started badly for the visitors with rink two failing to score in the early ends. Rink three saw Knowle pull away, which gave Knowle a decent lead going through the halfway point. Rink one saw Frys pull away to even the deficit a bit. Rink two slowly pulled back into the match, which closed the game right up. The overall scores were tied with only two ends left,

with rink two now tied with one to play. With Knowle picking up a single to take the lead again on rink one, Frys were only able to pick up one shot on rink two, which gave Frys the rink win, but was only enough to tie overall, at 44 each, with Frys picking up six points to sit seventh in the table in the Bristol and District League after four games. Scores: Rink 1: 2-8; Rink 2: 17-16; Rink 3: 20-7; Frys 44-44 Knowle ‘B’ (6-4). Frys’ season started with a

home game against neighbours Keynsham, which they lost 6928, failing to score any points. Another defeat followed on May 3 at Page Park A, with Frys losing 46-36. The following week, however, saw Frys win against Avonmouth at home at Somerdale 55-31, giving them 10 points. The first game of the City and County of Bristol Bowling Association Clarence Davey on April 30 saw Frys welcome Bristol Arrow to a cold Somerdale. Frys had the

better start with three rinks pulling out early leads. Bristol Arrow started to pull back into the game but Frys were able to keep their lead at a comfortable margin, eventually taking a 93-64 win to advance to the second round. Bristol Bats sunk by strong Mariners Bristol Bats went down fighting in Plymouth on Sunday, May 20, losing 32-20 to the Mariners in their latest South West Baseball League (SWBL) match, writes our correspondent. On a perfect day for baseball, the Bats fought back after some outfield errors allowed the Plymouth team to jump to a 13-0 lead after two innings. As the defense tightened up, the Bristol team began to score regularly as well as running well on the base paths. Shortshop Alex Brown got on base each time he went up to bat and Paul Carter, Tom Knox and the Tamosiunas brothers, Nerius and Darius, all had multi-hit days. Teenager Charlie Taylor started his first game for the Bristol team and had a solid game at second base as well as showing patience at the plate at vital moments. “We responded extremely well to a slow start and showed that offensively we are a good team,” said Richard Evans, assistant manager of the Bats. The Mariners are a very experienced team with strong starting pitching and it’s a shame that the early defensive

lapses put us on the back foot.” The Bristol Badgers were due to welcome the Monarchs to Somerdale but the Cambridge club were unable to raise a full team and forfeited the two scheduled games. This means that the Badgers move to 8-0 in the BBF AA Central Division a third of the way through their schedule. Both teams then had a week off from league action although the Bats travelled to Cardiff for a friendly on Saturday, May 26. It was Cardiff’s first home game of 2018 at their newlymarked baseball field on King George V Field at Heath Park. The early rain cleared away and the teams played a doubleheader in beautiful, sunny weather. The two games were well contested, with Cardiff winning the opener by a final score of 10-5 in seven innings, and Bristol taking the second game convincingly by 17-5 (4 innings). League matches resume on Sunday, June 3. The Badgers travel to Stourbridge to take on the Titans while the Bats welcome last year’s losing SWBL finalists, the Exeter Spitfires, to Somerdale Pavilion.

SPORT

Sun gets bowlers back out on the green There is nothing like a spell of hot sunshine for bringing the members of Keynsham Bowling Club out onto their green in the Memorial Park, writes our correspondent. On the third Sunday in May, 36 bowlers competed throughout the day for the Ray Percival Trophy. Ray was a longstanding member of the club and chairman for five years. When he passed away in 2005, his wife Beryl donated a trophy in his memory. Split into mixed teams of three and then put into two groups, each side played five games of eight ends per game and then the side with the highest number of points in each group played one another in the final. Our picture shows the winning side – Brian Pearce, Jan Iles and Roy Wilton – receiving the trophy from club chairman Barrie Davies. There was no truth

in the rumour that Roy won as he shared his choice of headgear with the chairman! While it is still early days in the leagues in which the men and ladies play, it is worth noting that after four matches in the Bristol and District League on a Thursday evening, the men’s A team are top of their league following trips to Frys and Ardagh and home games against Henleaze and Knowle. Things are now getting busy on the green as in addition to fixtures against other sides, the club’s internal competitions get into full swing.
