Arts and culture cash to boost High Street NEW community-led cultural activities and events are set to be enjoyed in Keynsham from this summer following an £80,000 award. The grant has been made by Historic England as part of Keynsham’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HZHAZ) and will be used for new community programmes centred around the High Street that are focused on the arts, history and culture. Keynsham is among 60 high streets in England to receive a share of £6 million for these projects from the four-year-long High Streets Heritage Action Zones’ Cultural Programme. Taking place over the next three years, these local cultural programmes will be led by ‘cultural consortia’ formed of local stakeholder groups and representatives, with support from Bath & North East Somerset Council and Historic England. Keynsham has been awarded £80,000 to fund activities including mini festivals, markets, cultural community days and the installation of an illustrative timeline of Turn to Page 2

Complaints Despite our best efforts, we sometimes get things wrong. We always try to resolve issues informally at first but we also have a formal complaints procedure. If you have a complaint about anything in Keynshamvoice, contact the publisher using the details below. We aspire to follow the Code of Conduct of the NUJ (National Union of Journalists), which holds journalists to a high standard of behaviour.

From Page 1 Keynsham’s history. In the first year, the project will uncover how Keynsham was in the past. The second year will celebrate Keynsham as it is now, and the final year will look to the future. Deb Cooper of Keynsham Town Council led the Keynsham bid, developed by the cultural consortium with support from Bath & North East Somerset Council. Councillor Cooper said: “Currently, people come to the High Street area to do their shopping and then they leave. We want them to feel that they can stay a while, meet friends, relax and enjoy a safe, bright, inspiring space. “We want everyone to benefit from our programme – we want our older residents to recognise and remember past events, and to know that the younger residents will see and hear their stories. “We want to inspire younger residents to be proud of and take ownership of our town for the future. We want to make sure we support and appreciate our businesses and traders, who are a vital part of our town centre. “By the end of this programme, we aim to have built a strong and exciting cultural calendar for our town centre – events and activities that bring people together throughout the year, and which become regular events. This will create memories for people, and this is how a legacy is built.” A similar award of £85,000 has been made to Midsomer Norton. More information on Keynsham’s cultural programme will be announced in the coming months. l New-look High Street: Page 11

AS well as the local cultural programmes, Historic England is also curating a national cultural programme across summer 2021 to encourage people back to their local high streets. As part of this, the Keynsham Heritage Action Zone is taking part in Historic England’s Twin Towns programme. This will see the town unofficially ‘twinned’ with Bedford through a programme of creative commissions. Artists will work with local communities to uncover what they have in common and produce a series of installations, performances and digital work. Artists Ellie Shipman and Katy Hawkins have started their creative community project in Keynsham and Bedford called Public Announcements. The project aims to highlight the hidden histories and activities of both locations by working with local groups to create illustrated maps for each high street, design High Street Observation Cards and co-create thought-provoking banners to be displayed in the summer. To find out more about the Public Announcements project, visit the artists’ blog at eleanorshipman.com/ blog/public-announcements or visit the High Street Culture webpages at https:// historicengland.org.uk/getinvolved/high-street-culture/

Caring Issy gives with her head and heart A SCHOOLGIRL from Saltford has donated her flowing locks to a charity that provides wigs for children who have lost their hair during cancer treatment. Issy Sheppard, a Year 8 student at Hayesfield Girls’ School in Bath, said: “I have been growing my hair for about two years, partly because during lockdown it hasn’t been easy to get a haircut. “I’m turning 13 soon and thought it would be a good time for a change and to help others that are less fortunate than me.” The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides real-hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people, up to the age of 24, who have lost their hair as a result of treatment for cancer or other illnesses. Set up in 2005 by Wendy Tarplee-Morris, when her daughter Hannah died of cancer, it has since provided many young people with high-quality wigs in memory of Hannah, who loved her own hair. The trust also raises money for child cancer research, a cause to which Issy has contributed more than £500. To support Issy’s fundraising effort, go to www. justgiving.com and search for issythesuperhairo. For more information about the work of the Little Princess Trust, visit their website at www. littleprincesses.org.uk, which also explains how to donate your own hair. The trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic community fundraisers.

Amari's litter crusade AN EIGHT-year-old girl has set up a new group for children who want to help keep Keynsham free of litter. Amari Morris-Taylor has set up Keynsham Mini Wombles so she can do her bit to keep the town tidy. She said: “I wanted to make my stand to stop the environment getting too overworked with litter.” The new group is connected to Keynsham Wombles, which Amari first became aware of when she and other pupils at her school went litter-picking after fireworks night. Then, when Amari had the idea of setting up her own group, her mum Zaya discovered that Keynsham Wombles founder Erica Davies lived in the same street. Amari and Zara went to meet Erica – and the name ‘Keynsham Mini Wombles’ was born. Their first litter pick will coincide with a Keynsham Wombles clean-up on June 6. The Mini Wombles already have enough helpers for that date and cannot take on any more. But to register the interest

of those aged 4 to 16 who want to take part in subsequent litter picks, email miniwombles@ noplaceforlitter.org Amari said: “Everyone has to be with a responsible adult, but it wouldn’t have to be their own parents.” Amari featured in Keynsham Voice two years ago when, at the age of six, she and her mum created a scheme that allows people to borrow plastic items for parties, to cut down on single-use plastic. The Plastic Party Box is now back in operation following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. For details, find Take Notice Bristol-BANES on Facebook or email takenoticebristolbath@ gmail.com

New parking zone for

Covid-19 test hub opens in car park A NEW test-and-collect hub will help people living and working in the Keynsham area to get tested regularly for Covid-19. The new hub in Ashton Way car park replaces the previous test site at the Masonic Hall and was due to open from May 24. Becky Reynolds, Director of Public Health for Bath and North East Somerset, said: “As we emerge from lockdown, it’s important we stay on track and continue to do the things that will keep us safe – washing hands, covering our face, making space, and opening windows where possible. And making sure we take a regular Covid-19 test is another important step we can all take. “One in three people with Covid-19 have no symptoms, so test yourself twice a week, and self-isolate if it comes back positive – this will stop the spread of the virus in its tracks.” Free test kits can also be collected from your local pharmacy. There are now more than 40 sites in B&NES where people can pick up two boxes, each containing seven tests. Find your nearest site at https://maps.test-andtrace.nhs.uk/ You can book a test at www.bathnes.gov.uk/rapidtest Rapid lateral flow tests are for those who do not have symptoms of coronavirus – anyone with Covid-19 symptoms should book a PCR test online (https://www. gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test) or call 119.

residents to make access safer for all THE Shallows and Mead Lane in Saltford have new parking restrictions in place. Double-yellow lines have been installed along most of both these residential roads, and The Shallows has a Residents’ Parking Zone (RPZ) – the first in Saltford. Over recent years these two narrow roads, running adjacent to the River Avon, have been the subject of safety concerns following numerous instances of dangerous and inconsiderate parking. Scenes of gridlock, which severely reduced access for emergency vehicles, led to several police road closures in Saltford’s ‘old village’ area. Access concerns and safety issues, due to the high number of drivers parking on The Shallows and Mead Lane, were repeatedly raised by residents and users of the riverbank to Saltford Parish Council and Bath & North East Somerset ward councillors. The police and fire brigade

Residents' Parking Zone sign on The Shallows expressed similar concerns during busy periods. A three-hour limited waiting bay has been created on The Shallows near the car park, and The Shallows car park itself has parking spaces in marked bays only. The new restrictions have been welcomed by both residents and visitors who use these roads. Benefits include a safer

environment for pedestrians and cyclists, good access for vehicle users, and the ability for residents to access and park near their homes during busy periods. The new parking restrictions have also led to an improved environment for those who come to enjoy the riverside setting, such as kayakers and anglers. They also protect the riverbank structure. The new Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) have resulted from collaborative work between Saltford Parish Council, Saltford’s B&NES ward councillors and B&NES Council. They follow a B&NES consultation earlier this year. B&NES ward councillor Duncan Hounsell said: “It is exceptional for a Residents’ Parking Zone (RPZ) to be created in a relatively small area. “B&NES Council has moved swiftly to respond to the needs of residents to have priority parking in The Shallows. “With the parking restrictions

now in place on a permanent basis, it is clear that the best way for visitors to enjoy Saltford’s riverside is by cycling or walking, whilst there are disabled parking bays within The Shallows public car park where limited parking continues to be provided.” Councillor Chris Warren, chair of Saltford Parish Council, added: “The parish council has worked closely with B&NES Council (the highways authority) to achieve the implementation of the TROs, which benefit The Shallows and Mead Lane residents, the wider Saltford community who come to enjoy the riverside area, and visitors to the village. Ensuring safety and access at this location is paramount.” B&NES Council parking enforcement officers are regularly visiting the area to ensure the new TROs are being followed, including ensuring appropriate parking in the car park and in the dedicated Residents’ Parking Zone bays.

Biogas plant lorries 'every 4 minutes'

HUGE lorries could drive in and out of a Keynsham energy-fromwaste plant on unsuitable roads every four minutes, opponents have claimed. Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Ltd (REAL) wants to build an anaerobic digester plant capable of processing 92,000 tonnes of foodstock a year at the former Queen Charlton Quarry in Charlton Field Lane – nearly four times the size of a facility approved in 2014 that was never completed and now faces enforcement action. More than 600 people have now objected, with only 10 expressing support. Campaign group Protect Our Keynsham Environment (POKE) has warned that the scheme will permanently alter the green-belt landscape, create noise and smell and potentially harm residents’ health. REAL, which hopes to complete construction by next summer, says the plant would produce green gas and electricity for the local energy network from food waste and renewable energy crops. But POKE said most of the foodstock brought in would not be from the local area, and the further it travels the less sustainable it becomes. POKE estimated that at peak times HGVs could be coming and going every four minutes, and claimed the access would be unsafe. Representing the group, consultant Rob Duff said: “The development is by definition inappropriate in the green belt, will cause harm to the openness and visual amenity of the green

Alan Hale, left, and Paul May fear the proposed biogas plant's effect on the lives of nearby residents belt and will, no matter how it is described, conflict with the stated purposes of including the land in the green belt. “Most importantly for local residents, the development will cause significant harm to their amenity, highway safety and potentially their health. “It will harm visual amenity, will create noise, will create odour, will create dust and bioaerosols, could be harmful to health, will add significant volumes of HGV movements to local roads, will

permanently alter the landscape and constitutes unjustified inappropriate development in the green belt.” The Avon and Bristol branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England took a similar position, saying: “The amenity damage to the green belt is unjustifiable; the traffic and safety implications are unacceptable, the environmental impact on people’s homes will be unacceptable and in overall terms we do not believe that the proposals are environmentally or economically sustainable.”

Keynsham Town Council raised concerns about noise, dust, odours, “profound” highways issues and the risk of the digestate pools overflowing. REAL said the storage building will be fitted with a system to ensure no odour leaves the site. Local members of Bath and North East Somerset Council have also voiced their opposition. Keynsham’s Councillor Alan Hale said: “Whilst there is perhaps an ever increasing aspiration to achieve renewable energy resources it begs the question whether it should be at the price of hundreds of HGVs using the inadequate road system on Woollard Lane and Charlton Road. “Many hundreds of new homes have been built less than a mile from the proposed development and many if not all of those new residents will have bought to live on the edge of a market town and close to the countryside – not to be in the firing line for additional traffic, noise, odour and spores.” Councillor Paul May, who represents Publow and Whitchurch, added: “This is a major application which will adversely affect thousands of people, will be an inefficient and costly carbon-generating development in its reliance upon waste being transported, and is extremely visually intrusive.” B&NES Council will decide on Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Ltd’s planning application in due course. Revamp for tennis courts at the park TENNIS courts at Keynsham Memorial Park are being refurbished as part of a project to increase interest in the sport. Bath and North East Somerset Council is also improving courts at Alice Park and Sydney Gardens in Bath, thanks to a £600,000 investment. The project will create a network of community tennis facilities that encourages more people to take up the sport, offering pay-and-play opportunities, membership packages and free tennis and coaching programmes. It will also provide wider community use for local schools, colleges, community groups and disability groups in a safe environment. B&NES has worked with Keynsham Town Council, the Lawn Tennis Association, Sport England and the Alice Park Trust to secure the funding for the tennis court refurbishments. The Memorial Park’s four courts are being resurfaced and

The tennis courts at Keynsham Memorial Park fencing will be improved. The work is scheduled to finish by the end of July. The town council has committed £7,500 towards the refurbishment. Council chairman Andy Wait said: “The future of the tennis courts has been a matter of discussion between B&NES and the town council since the

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

lease expired in 2018. This new programme by B&NES enables Keynsham residents to receive the benefits of an easier and more accessible booking system, with courts refurbished to a much higher standard than before.” Ownership and operation of the courts will remain with B&NES, while the town

council will continue to focus its resources on improving play areas and other green spaces in the town. The courts will be operated on behalf of B&NES by the West of England Sport Trust (Wesport), which will manage and oversee the coaching provision at the park courts, providing coaching programmes and outreach to target groups. The new facilities will make use of the Lawn Tennis Association’s web-based bookings and access systems. The process is simple in that a court can be booked and paid for online via a laptop, tablet or phone. Work already completed as part of the tennis improvements in Bath and North East Somerset include the refurbishment of tennis courts and community asset transfer to Saltford Tennis Club. A grant of £5,000 has been provided towards the sink fund costs and a new club house project.

Can you help care for abbey's remains? A GROUP of volunteers who care for the remains of Keynsham Abbey are appealing for more people to join them. The site is in Keynsham Memorial Park near the railway station entrance. The number of helpers permitted had been restricted by Covid-19 regulations. But since May 17, up to 30 people are allowed for any one session. Volunteers are needed for garden and routine maintenance, including dry stone walling, but there are jobs to suit anyone of any ability. No previous experience is required – helpers are just asked to bring their own gardening gloves - and all tools will be provided. Keynsham Abbey was founded in the 12th century - although there is some evidence that points to an earlier Saxon religious settlement - and rapidly became one of the most powerful abbeys in the land. The abbey church is estimated to have been at least 226ft long and 138ft wide and the abbey’s grounds covered 18 acres, mostly in what is now the Memorial Park. After the Dissolution, the abbey fell into disrepair and little was left. This was the case until the 1960s, when the bypass was built and cut through the abbey remains.

The abbey's remains in the Memorial Park Bristol Folk House Archaeological Society - now Bristol History & Archaeology Society (BHAS) - was instrumental in carrying out archaeological work and in removing and recording artefacts from the construction site. Many of these artefacts are now in the custody of Bath & North East Somerset Council - as the owners of the park - and some are on display in Keynsham Library. Having been extensively excavated, the main area of the abbey’s remains are located in the Memorial Park and this area is now a Scheduled Monument.

The remains were landscaped in the early 1990s and the beds were originally filled with herbs and plants that would have been familiar to the canons in the abbey. Many of these remain. BHAS is still involved with the care and maintenance of the abbey remains, with the co-operation of Bath & North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council. Elaine Cook, BHAS chair, said: “A small group meets regularly every fortnight to garden, and we are eager for more to join us and help with the work. “But we also welcome visitors who simply want to look round an area which is normally fenced off from the main park.” The volunteers meet from 2pm every other Saturday for two to three hours, depending on the weather. If a group wishes to visit the remains, they need to let Elaine know in advance by emailing her at bristolhas@gmail.com The restriction on numbers is across the whole session, so the group may have to refuse entry if it has already seen 30 people that day. The volunteers will there on the following Saturdays: May 29, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, August 7, August 21 and September 4.

New leader for council KEVIN Guy has been appointed the new leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council. Councillor Guy was appointed at the council’s annual general meeting, along with a new eight-member cabinet. The appointments follow Councillor Dine Romero standing down as council leader and leader of the Liberal Democrat group in April. Councillor Guy said he would be placing the climate emergency at the heart of the council’s decision-making.

Chance to sing again for people with dementia KEYNSHAM & Saltford Dementia Action Alliance (KSDAA) is looking forward to resuming its Music for the Mind sessions this summer. Once Covid-19 restrictions came into force in 2020, the KSDAA had to close its twicemonthly sessions, depriving many people living with dementia of the opportunity to sing well-known songs. KSDDA chairman Alan Hales said: “Having to close was such a shame. Many who had little communication would suddenly come out of themselves and sing all the words. The mornings afforded

some respite for the carers as well.” The group will reopen its sessions on July 22 at St Dunstan's Church Hall, Bristol Road, Keynsham, and then continue on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 10.30am-12.15pm. The sessions are free unless those attending wish to make a small donation. Carers must stay with those living with dementia. All sessions will be Covid safe. Temperatures will be taken, and masks and hand sanitiser will be necessary. It is also hoped those attending will take a rapid flow

The normal format is coffee, tea, cake and chat for half an hour, then in a circle a few light seated exercises, followed by singing and percussion with a professional facilitator. THERE was a time when Keynsham High Street had a wide variety of businesses. This picture shows the workforce at the Fast Colour Eyelet Hole

factory in the early 1900s, when it was one of the town’s larger employers. Eyelets were made from local brass for the boot and shoe

industry, which employed thousands in Kingswood at the time. For a period in the First World War, it produced buttons for

New-look High Street set to take shape WORK to enhance Keynsham High Street was due to start on May 24. The permanent improvements include footpath-widening and resurfacing, better signage, and cycling and bus stop facilities. There will also be new street furniture, streetlights, landscaping and trees. The enhancements between Charlton Road and Bath Hill seek to rejuvenate the town centre and attract locals and visitors back to the High Street. The scheme is funded by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership through the Local Growth and Getting Building Funds, administered by the West of England Combined Authority. It is also funded by the Combined Authority through its Love our High Streets programme. The work was due to start last year before the project was paused temporarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Some temporary access restriction measures were also put in place between Charlton Road and Bath Hill to enable social distancing. Last year the council invited views from the public and stakeholders on the detailed designs and specification. More than 100 responses were received and respondents were asked to rank the design elements they considered would be the most successful. The top three most popular were the reconfigured bus stop, paving materials and the pedestrian crossings. In response to the consultation feedback, further changes were also made to the final design including: l Improvements to widen the High Street junctions at Charlton Road and Bath Hill, as well as the access to the courtyard behind No. 69. l New paving to be installed in front of the Methodist church to match the rest of the High Street l Relocation of several planters. to improve visibility and safety for cyclists and pedestrians. l Addition of dropped kerbs to disabled parking bays to improve accessibility. l Signage improvements to cycle contra-flow lane to help improve pedestrian and cyclist interaction at crossing and intersections. l A new shared-use footway at the top of Bath Hill to help

cyclists to join the dedicated cycle lane. l An improved cycle stand design, making it easier to secure bikes and which complements existing stands/furniture in the area. Councillor Richard Samuel, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for resources and economic development, said: “These works are the first step in revitalising Keynsham town centre. “They will also improve sustainable transport by encouraging more pedestrians, cyclists and bus users to continue to make short local trips by walking or wheeling. “The town centre is set to benefit from significant investment over the next few years, which will go a long way to keeping its position as a successful independent centre and the focus of Keynsham’s public life.” The council was awarded £1.5 million, through the West

of England Combined Authority, towards the cost of implementing the first phase of public realm improvements in June 2019 to help create a better retail environment, encourage an increase in footfall and support the local economy. The public realm enhancements come on top of a range of future investment for the town, including £1.1 million received as part of the Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) Programme. This programme has been match-funded by Keynsham Town Council and B&NES Council and will follow on from this scheme, supporting further public realm improvements and sympathetic improvements to historic shopfronts alongside arts and community engagement. The public realm improvements will be constructed in short sections, starting on the west side of the High Street outside the Methodist church, continuing

towards Bath Hill, then on the east side travelling from Charlton Road to Bath Hill. The work is expected to take nine months. The highway will only be restricted during the existing road closure, which is in place for social distancing, and will remain open unless a restriction is required by the construction programme. At the times the High Street will need to be closed to all traffic, there will be a diversion around Ashton Way. These periods of closure will be announced and signed in advance so that people can plan their journeys. Temporary disabled bays will be available outside HSBC Bank. The contraflow cycle lane will be closed when works to upgrade it are carried out or when necessary for safety reasons. The council and its contractor will be working with traders to minimise disruption and ensure access during trading hours. The council says the temporary traffic restriction order and construction works will not prevent customers or traders from accessing their premises. To minimise the impact of the construction, the site welfare and storage will be situated in the closed Station Road overflow car park. It's so great to be back with you all! KEYNSHAM Mencap is celebrating the reopening of its social clubs following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. As an initial step, the society restarted half of its 10 clubs for adults and children with learning disabilities and autism, then planned to open the rest by the end of May. “It has been amazing to see our members again after such a long break,” said operations manager Laura Jefferies. “Although the clubs are a bit different to what they’ve been used to, the members have adapted well, the staff and volunteers have made the clubs safe and at the same time a fun place to be for everyone.” During the pandemic, the clubs had to close and all major fundraising events cancelled. Despite this, Keynsham Mencap and its volunteers made a commitment to members to remain operational during the lockdowns and run virtual club sessions and activities that members could still enjoy at home. Keynsham Mencap is proud of the way staff and volunteers have continued to reach out, provide support and help members stay connected. The society will invest in its army of volunteers and provide them with a programme of essential training and skills that will benefit them in other areas of life and work, while also facilitating strong friendships within the ‘Mencap Family’. Laura said: “The pandemic has seen an increase in volunteers wanting to make a difference for local causes, and now, as life starts to go back to normal, we would love to welcome more volunteers to our organisation, where we can guarantee lots of fun and laughter.

“There are so many opportunities to help.” During National Volunteers Week at the start of June, the charity was planning to thank its volunteers for all the support they have given to the society and its members. Keynsham Mencap is a completely self-funded charity. To enable it to run weekly social and sports clubs for children and adults with learning disabilities, it relies on grants, its own fundraising events and support from their volunteers and the local community. If anyone is interested in volunteering, and gaining experience and training in how to create fun social opportunities for adults and children with a learning disability or autism, they should email laura@keynshammencap.org.uk

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Our flower show was pick of the bunch

M

any readers will remember the Bristol Flower Show, held on the Downs. But there was a time when Keynsham’s own flower show was regarded as the largest in the West. The story starts in 1869 when, on August 20, the first show was held. It was a one-day affair but generated a great response, so it was repeated the following year and moved to the August bank holiday, which was then the first Monday of the month. Over the next 20 years, the event grew and attracted entrants from all the neighbouring parishes. Although billed as a flower shower, it became a major recreational event, and the organising committee spent the preceding six months selecting contractors and participants. There was a lot to plan, with the committee minutes listing field hire, band, staging, amusements, stalls, fireworks, refreshments, tents, tickets, ticket box, sports, police, advertising, prizes, judges, certificates, lighting and Insurance. Competition for the brass band contract was keen, with no fewer that 12 bids in 1887 – although they were not the cheapest, the Bristol Rifle Volunteer Band was engaged to play from 12pm to 8.30pm. Seven tenders were received for the fireworks display that year, including one from Brock’s – still a familiar name – but the contract went to Messrs Wilder for a £7 or £10 display. By modern standards this must have been a fairly modest affair. There appear to be no records of the numbers attending in these early years, but they were sufficient to require Bristol Police to be paid

Keynsham Flower Show was a major attraction in its heyday, Below, a flyer for the 1929 event

to supply constables to ensure public safety. The core of the event was, of course, the competitions for flowers, vegetables and fruit typically more than 1,000 entries were received from 160 exhibitors. Prizes were solicited from seed merchants across the country, but these often came with strings attached. For example, Biddle’s of Loughborough offered prizes of 6s 0d (30p) and 4s 6d (22p) for nine bulbs of Biddle giant spring onions, while Mr F King of Chewton Keynsham gave 12s 6d (62p) for a collection of not less than six varieties of vegetables grown with the aid of his manure! In 1898, it was decided to rename the flower show organisation as the Keynsham

& District Horticultural Society. This was intended to promote horticulture in the surrounding parishes, each of which was represented on the committee, but it did not affect the planning of the day. The prestige of the event was shown when Dr Gerrish wrote to the Duke of Beaufort asking if he would open the show. The duke replied that it would give him and the duchess great pleasure to do this; the committee provided a bouquet for the duchess "not to exceed 30s (£1.50) in price” and asked Dr Harrison to allow one of his daughters to make the presentation. Where was the show held? There seem to have been several sites over the years, with various local farmers approached to rent out fields. Of course, there was then a lot of agricultural land quite close to the town centre, but the site most often used was known as The Park. This was long before the Memorial Park was created but appears to have been the northern part of the present park, close to St John’s Church. In 1913, the show moved to

the Hams on land belonging to Mr Clothier. A tug-of-war was added to the sporting events, and challenge cups, silver and bronze shields and medals were awarded in addition to money prizes. Lighting for the event was provided by the "Electric Light Company”. Between 1915 and 1919 there were no shows due to the First World War, but on 10th February 1919, the committee met in Mr Wilkins’ Tea Room on the High Street and resolved to hold the show on August bank holiday 1919. By 1922, attractions had changed somewhat, and a beer tent was provided, prompting protests from local temperance societies. The show continued, sometimes running over two days, until another break during the Second World War. It was again revived and continued until the horticultural society declined, finally being wound up in July 1969 - the history society has less information on these more recent years. l Based on an article by the late Sue Trude for the society journal 2004 Richard Dyson

Thomas the Tank Engine returns! Then and now: George with his son James in 1985, left, and with the two new engines he has made GEORGE Colbourne took a trip down memory line when he decided to make special toys for his grandchildren. The Keynsham resident made the local news more than three decades ago when he crafted a Thomas the Tank Engine toy for his two-year-old son James. He entered the toy in the Bristol Woodworker Show and won a silver medal which can be seen glued to the side of the cab

in this black-and-white photograph from the Keynsham Chronicle in 1985. George showed the engine to the Rev W Awdry, author of the Thomas stories, and he seemed much impressed. Since then, the years have flown by, and son James is now married with a young family of his own. So Grandpa decided it was time he set to work again in the garden shed.

The new photo shows George with the two new engines, while sitting on the same garden bench that featured in the 1985 picture. Pledge to fight for more police funding AVON and Somerset’s new police and crime commissioner has promised to “shout and scream” for more funding for the force and has already spoken to the Home Secretary. Conservative candidate Mark Shelford received 34.4 per cent of first-preference votes and was elected after second-preference votes were counted, beating Labour’s Kerry Barker. He is only the area’s second PCC, replacing independent Sue Mountstevens, who stepped down after nine years in the role. The PCC sets the strategic direction for the force, and one of Mr Shelford’s first tasks will be to appoint a new chief constable after Andy Marsh announced he would leave in July for a new challenge. Asked what qualities he is looking for in a new chief constable, Mr Shelford said: “Somebody that exudes leadership and command and has unshakeable belief in the Peelian principles of policing.

New PCC Mark Shelford says: 'We should never give way to a mob' “They need to have all the qualifications, knowledge and experience. Key to me is the leadership piece. “Andy Marsh has been an exceptional leader who has really changed Avon and Somerset for the better. He had to deal with a really difficult time and led exceptionally well.” A key challenge for police over the last year has been handling protests during lockdowns. The new PCC has said he wholly supports the Police, Crime and Sentencing Bill – which has sparked riots in Bristol – as it reinforces “the British people’s right to peacefully protest but not to disrupt, so those people

going about their lawful business should not be affected by a protest.” Speaking last summer, Mr Shelford – then already a campaigning candidate after the pandemic delayed the elections – slammed the police leadership for “surrendering control” and claimed the force missed two opportunities to stop a “rampaging mob” pulling down Bristol’s statue of the slave trader Edward Colston. Now in post, he struck a more measured tone. He said it was not for him to interfere in operational matters and it would be “extremely unfair” to say whether the statue would still be standing if he had been the PCC at the time. “I want to understand what the plan is and whether we need to change the resource requirement to support the frontline officers,” said Mr Shelford, whose new job comes with an £86,000 salary. “We should never give way to a mob.

We should always police without fear or favour.” He said he would not rush to appoint a new chief constable and has asked his team to put together a timeline by early June. Other candidates in the PCC election pledged to hold the Conservative government to account and call for a review of the funding formula that historically has not favoured Avon and Somerset. Mr Shelford said he would do the same: “I’ll be shouting and screaming to make sure it’s better balanced. I and a number of other Conservative PCCs were on a call with the Home Secretary and the Minister of Policing last night talking about this very thing. “They were receptive. It’s clearly a complicated set of decisions they need to make. That’s not frightened me before. I’ll go out and shout for resources.” l Mark Shelford's new column for the Voice: Page 35

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

peoples know that ‘it is not until ‘ Native the last tree is felled and the last fish

fished that we will understand that we cannot eat money.’

O

n September 18 we will have a community eco festival organised by Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford (CTKS) with the support of Keynsham Town Council. It will be an opportunity to learn what is being done in our area to address climate change and to make us think what we can do to decrease our carbon footprint. Climate change is the most pressing issue humanity is facing now. Millions of people are already suffering the consequences of global warming, with hurricanes, floods, droughts and extreme temperatures. If this is not addressed urgently, we will face mass migration on a scale not seen before, millions of people being displaced because they will not have water and food. What are we doing? Just watching and waiting for it to happen? Or maybe thinking it

is not going to happen? Or maybe we think it has nothing to do with us? That we cannot do anything anyway? One thing is sure, if we do not act, our children and our grandchildren will carry the consequences. With business as usual, we are razing forests, drilling for more oil and fracked gas, for more coal, as if the Earth’s resources are infinite. All this in the name of ‘the economy’. Somebody somewhere is paying the price. Native peoples know that ‘it is not until the last tree is felled and the last fish fished that we will understand that we cannot eat money.’ We must use fewer resources, waste less, decrease our consumption. We must engage with our representatives in government. We have to try to change our behaviour, but we also have to push our representatives to do

the right thing. They are the ones who have the power to implement laws that will make big changes possible. We have COP26 - a summit of the countries that are part of the UN’s climate treaty - in Glasgow at the end of the year. Let us make our views known to them. This would be one of the most charitable things we could do because we would be doing it for the common good. Many people have discovered Nature during the lockdown. This wonderful world was made for us by the Lord. It is to be shared by everyone, it is to be enjoyed and cared for. We have forgotten that we all depend on it and on each other. Go out for a walk in the stillness, silence and beauty of Nature, try to ‘listen’ to what your heart is telling you. Maybe you will discover the way ahead.

Aldo inspires troop to seek adventure

Aldo Kane inspired the Scouts with his tales of adventure

A

xe Troop had an exciting visit from real-life explorer Aldo Kane, an ex-Marine who now works in TV and film in extreme and remote locations. He’s best known for working on Steve Backshall's programmes, making sure he stays safe in hostile locations, as well as coordinating some stunts for Marvel films. He chatted to the Troop about his time in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and how it incited his passion for adventure and led to joining the Marines and Commandos. The Scouts loved his stories of leading a team to the bottom of a volcano and being locked in a bunker as part of a psychology experiment — although they’ve been told that unfortunately these won’t be on the Scouting programme any time soon! Some even came away saying they wanted to try abseiling and other adventurous activities, so it seems they were definitely inspired

by the talk. Aldo also took the time to award badges to the Troop for investitures and answered many questions. l Meanwhile, despite the pandemic and loss of face-to-face meetings, seven Rocky Beavers completed all the activities needed to gain their Chief Bronze Scout Awards. They worked very hard during lockdown, and parents and carers were really supportive in helping them to accomplish this. Their achievements are a testament to the Scouting spirit and their positive attitudes, so congratulations to Jack, Thomas, Sid, Ellis, Eric, Stanley and Jacob. Well done also to Achilles, from Quantock Cubs, who gained his Chief Silver Scout Award before moving up to Scouts. Joshua of Rocky Beavers has been presented with his Chief Bronze Scout Award, a whole six months prior to moving up to Cubs. Congratulations Joshua!

Restoring our ecosystems

IT'S world environment day on June 5, and to mark it, the United Nations Environment Programme is launching a decade of action on ecosystem restoration. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people. There has never been a more urgent need to restore damaged ecosystems than now, as we face the global climate and nature emergencies. Some of the work that’s needed to restore ecosystems can only be delivered by national and local governments. These are the big policy changes like restricting pesticide and nitrogen use in agriculture, protecting marine areas and creating spaces for nature in cities through planning laws. In May, our government announced a series of measures to restore ecosystems in the UK, including a ban on sales of peat compost by 2024. Peatland ecosystems are three times as effective at sucking up carbon than forests. But once drained and extracted, a peat bog actually emits greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. The government has also committed to

tripling tree planting in England to 7,000 hectares a year by 2024, and is setting a new 2030 target for wildlife populations. A species reintroduction taskforce will take forward work on recovering species lost to England, such as wildcats and beavers. Initiatives like these go a long way to making the UN’s decade of ecosystem restoration a success. But it’s not only up to governments. We can all do things to support our local ecosystems. Individually, we can rewild our gardens and change our diets to support naturefriendly farming. Collectively, we can plant trees, clean up our rivers and coasts, make spaces for nature in our towns and cities, and manage local woodland for biodiversity. It’s only with healthy ecosystems that we will be able to enhance people’s livelihoods, combat climate change and halt the dangerous collapse of biodiversity. l If you’d like to support our local ecosystems, why not take part in a Keynsham-wide litter pick on June 6, as part of the Great British Spring Clean. More information is available on the Keynsham Wombles’ Facebook page. Liz Barling

Passing on wealth between generations In many families there are four generations alive at the same time. Family wealth is often not split evenly. The generations who are in most need of the wealth currently sit at either end of the spectrum. They are: • Millennials trying to get on the property ladder. • The older generation, living longer, but with deteriorating health and without any long-term care provision. The traditional way of passing on wealth after death does not serve the financial needs of today’s families very well. That’s the backdrop to intergenerational wealth planning and it may be a situation that you recognise in your own family.

paying university fees or helping with a first home deposit, a financial adviser could help you achieve this in the most tax efficient way. The Coronavirus pandemic is causing many people to re-think their financial planning, and you may be one of them. It is expected that the younger generation will be most adversely affected by what has happened this past year. You can choose to use your wealth to do something to help. You may want to act soon to ‘lock in’ existing reliefs and tax rates. Focus is shifting on how to pay back the £ billions that has been borrowed. The Chancellor is likely to identify family wealth as one area that is ripe for reform.

As you get older it becomes just as important to protect the wealth you’ve built up as it is to make more. People over 55 years old may wish to use their wealth collaboratively with their families during their lifetime, when their children and grandchildren will need it most. New metro mayor vows green recovery DAN Norris has pledged to be a ‘jobs first’ West of England metro mayor following his election victory. The former government minister beat runner-up Conservative Samuel Williams by 125,482 votes to 85,389 in a run-off after the pair won through from the first round of voting. He had an unexpected healthy lead going into the second round, where second preferences from eliminated candidates Jerome Thomas (Green), who finished third, and Stephen Williams (Lib Dems), who was fourth, were added to their totals. Mr Norris said: “I will show the difference an active Metro Mayor makes for our region. This role is about collaboration and I will be a Metro Mayor who listens carefully and works cooperatively. “I’m determined to hit the ground running with a jobs and skills summit in my first 100 days and my green recovery plan.

Dan Norris has pledged to create 23,000 green jobs and improve transport

“I also know that the pandemic has been tough and as we build back, invest in jobs and our high streets, we must learn key lessons. “Together we can create a society where we keep looking out for each other and value what’s truly important.” During his election campaign, the Labour hopeful criticised his own party’s stance on Bristol Airport’s proposed expansion and said he was opposed to the development, which will be decided by a planning inspector at a public inquiry this summer. Among the policies in his

manifesto, the new mayor has pledged to create 23,000 green jobs. Other promises include: l Create “truly liveable towns and cities with high-quality and zero-carbon design” and have a firm requirement for 35 per cent of all new homes to be genuinely affordable. l Intervene directly in housebuilding by doubling the current spending plans to £80 million. l Establish a Homelessness Taskforce. l Create a transport system for the 21st century, with green and reliable buses, trains, and walking and cycling options to connect our region. l Start a wide-scale transformation of our public transport network, investigating options such as mass transit and bus franchising. l Implement smart ticketing, with simple tap-in-tap-out payments, and effective advertising of cheapest fares. l Tackle the climate emergency

n NEWS A CAR has crashed through the wall of Keynsham Ambulance Station. Police were called to the incident in the early hours of Sunday May 23. Crew members from Hicks Gate Fire Station attended after the crash left the wall in a dangerously unstable condition. They said on Twitter that the occupants of the car made off from the scene in West View Road. The tweet said: “Green Watch USAR have just got back from a Dangerous Structure where a car had gone through the wall of Keynsham Ambulance Station, occupants absconded and thankfully no staff near the wall at the time.” l Photo courtesy of Hicks Gate Fire Station on Twitter: @AFRSHicksGate

CropDrop appeal to growers FRUIT and veg growers are being asked to share their surplus produce through a charity scheme. Allotment-holders in Keynsham already support the CropDrop initiative – and now more growers in the area are being invited to get involved. Sam Rudd, volunteer project co-ordinator for CropDrop, said it made 158 ‘drops’ - about 1,700kg of produce - to 21 projects across Bath and North East Somerset last year. In Keynsham, produce was donated 10 times by members on the Park Road allotments to the Keynsham Coronavirus Response Group and the Bright Start FOOD club at Keynsham Children Centre. CropDrop also has links with the Temple Street Canteen, where one of its members helped to install the community fridge. “We donated a 25kg Atlantic squash to them which they used for free kids’ lunches during the second lockdown,” said Sam. Although CropDrop has some volunteer drivers, it prefers growers to deliver surplus produce to recipients themselves. “This helps create links between local residents in a community, thus giving them control over it, making the operation more resilient.

Keynsham Children’s Centre FOOD Club is among the recipients of produce donated to CropDrop “We’re only a small initiative with four volunteer members, so we've designed our operation to be ‘as light a touch’ possible. “Last year our kind Keynsham allotment contact delivered produce to the children’s centre, and the Covid group collected the produce from his house.” The surplus food has been gratefully received. Megan Mehnert, of the BrightStart FOOD Clubs that operate across B&NES, said: “It is fantastic to receive goodquality, locally grown food. “It’s exciting to select something from an assortment of produce and often leads to lovely conversations with members. “Families are often thrilled

to tell us how excited their child was when they brought home something interesting like a giant marrow or an unusually shaped courgette or carrot.” Eye-catching items donated in the past have included Trombolino courgettes and over 20 varities of squash from Newton Farm. Volunteers are now waiting to see what the current season will bring. Sam said: “Harvest only just kicks off the end of May or beginning of June - this year things have been delayed by cold nights and dry weather - and we never really know what people will donate or if they will have extra to donate.

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 9082121 or 07715770448

“That said, potatoes, carrots, broad beans, peas, radishes and early cabbages are all fairly prominent at that time of year. “This will also be a first for us as we only started late July last year - much remains to be seen. “Part of promoting our initiative now is to raise awareness to as many ambitious growers as possible, and ask people with space and time if they would grow a little extra for the purpose of donating. “That way we can deliver a greater variety of produce to the charity projects we work with and encourage healthier eating.” To find out more, email hello@cropdrop.co.uk or visit www.cropdrop.org.uk

HE third phase of lockdown easing has begun in many parts of the United Kingdom. As of Monday May 17, people in England have been able meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors and six people or two households have been allowed to meet indoors and stay overnight. Up to 30 people can now join those getting married, and the number of people attending funerals is no longer capped. Five named visitors can see friends and relatives in care homes, and residents will be able to organise trips outside the homes. Social-distancing guidelines are also changing - the contact that people choose to have with family and friends will be a matter of personal judgement but they are reminded to proceed with caution. The easing will provide a much-needed boon for the entertainment and hospitality industries since hotels, B&Bs and hostels can reopen, and pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes are able to serve customers indoors. Cinemas, museums, conference centres, concert halls, theatres and stadiums are opening their doors once more, and it is acceptable to play sports or take exercise classes inside. In stark contrast to the optimism felt by many, we are reminded, via the new, ‘Indian’ strain of the virus, that we are not out of the woods yet. It is imperative that all those eligible to receive the vaccination book an appointment as soon as possible to mitigate against cases and deaths rising. The relaxation of the rules will, no doubt, bring great joy to many but we must continue to be careful

and work together so that the plans to lift lockdown completely next month are not derailed. n On Tuesday May 11, the Queen joined her Parliament for the State Opening. Coming just over a month since the death of Prince Phillip, it was the largest in-person public event that Her Majesty has been involved in this year and is symbolic not only of the gradual lifting of Covid-19 restrictions but also of the year in Parliament to come. It was a scaled-back affair, owing to Covid-19 restrictions, without the traditional donning of the Imperial State Crown and robes that many are used to when tuning in to the event on television. These restrictions meant that only the Speaker, invited party leaders and Government and Opposition Whips processed from the Commons to hear the speech delivered in the Lords. I was rather lucky to have a place in the Queen’s procession in my role as Lord President of the Council. The Government legislative plan read out by the Queen was, in contrast, wide-reaching and bold. The Queen stated that her Government would “deliver a national recovery from the pandemic that makes the United Kingdom stronger, healthier and more prosperous than before.” The Government will “strengthen the economic ties across the union, investing in and improving national infrastructure.” The speech not only addressed the legacies of the pandemic, but also set out how the Government will go further to unite and level up the country, spreading opportunity across the country as we build back better.

Sweet memories of Fry's history The Fry’s Sentinel shunter and the Somerdale chocolate factory sign at Avon Valley Railway AN ICONIC reminder of Keynsham’s past has gone on display at Bitton station on the Avon Valley Railway. It’s an old enamel sign dating from the 1930s, advertising the Fry’s Somerdale chocolate factory. It was bought last year by Avon Valley volunteers George Colbourne and Eric Miles and put in place on the replica W.H. Smith kiosk, where it greets visitors as they enter the station platform. It is thought the sign was originally located at Keynsham railway station,

The coronavirus pandemic put paid to any operation of the locomotive during 2020. It is marked with a number of children's doodles of steam engines, which lends credence to the idea that the sign was on the Keynsham station platform. It is possible that schoolchildren penciled on these drawings while waiting for the train home or when trainspotting. Mistakes to avoid in choosing flat roofer

NEWS

HERE are five common mistakes to avoid when choosing a flat roofer: 1. Failing to research Check out the company’s online presence, from their website to social media, and look for reviews. Ask on Facebook for feedback from friends. 2. Not checking insurance Accidents can happen. Check out the company’s insurance to make sure they are covered if anything does go wrong. 3. Not getting a quote upfront How much is the job going to cost you? Get a best/worst case scenario or written quotation. 4. Not having a roofing warranty Higher-quality flat roofs should come with a 25-year warranty, which means you know you are going to be protected for a long time to come. 5. Don’t base your decision on price You have heard the saying “you get what you pay for”, right? Well, if you want a cheap felt roof, then you are going to have issues with it a lot sooner than choosing a tried-andtested quality solution. Picking a company to repair or replace your roof can be a daunting and difficult decision to make. As a family-run business based in North Somerset, Thermal Roof Flat Roofing has thousands of satisfied customers and can provide many personal references and testimonials. CHILDREN at Saltford Primary School have been going the distance for a Team GB Olympic and Paralympic challenge called 'Get Set Tokyo'. The aim is to virtually travel the distance from London to Tokyo via different countries to cover 47,349 kilometres. Year groups were split into teams to see who could reach Tokyo first. Children can measure distance by taking part in activities such as dancing, cycling, running and outdoor adventure. The Key Stage One team reached Tokyo in just eight days, which totalled nearly 500 hours of activities. The school has a JustGiving page for sponsorship, with a target of £500. Children can also buy a medal as a memento of the event. n BACK TO NATURE

Amazing moths bring magic to the night

M

oths are among the garden's best-kept secrets. Most people think they are dull and that they eat clothes. Two UK species do eat clothes but that makes the proportion in relation to the total number of species extremely small. As for being dull, it is a matter of degree and taste. Some moths are a bit brown and boring, but others are intricate flying mosaics, stunning to the eye and miraculous under a with Avon magnifying glass. And in June, be prepared Wildlife for an amazing fact: at night Trust more species of moths Keynsham may pass through your Group garden than all the types of butterflies in Britain put together. On a good night there may be over a hundred. As most of the 2,500-plus species of moths found in the UK are nocturnal, to investigate them in your garden, all you need is a bedside lamp (100w or LED equivalent) with shade removed, and an old sheet. Place the sheet on the lawn and put the lamp in the middle. If you have some empty egg boxes to place around, they give the moths somewhere to rest. Switch the lamp on at dusk and after a while you will find moths circling and resting on the sheet and egg boxes. It’s best to wait an hour or two before examining what you have. Best results will be found on a still, humid night, as moths love these conditions. As you check specimens that fly in, you will be astounded by the variety of sizes and colours, and soon you will want to find out more. And then another delight awaits - moths have amazing names and here’s just a few: True

Lover’s Knot, Maiden's Blush, Rosy Footman, Peach Blossom and Hebrew Character. British moths can lay claim to having the most vivid and imaginative names of any group of animals worldwide. Some moths can be seen in the daytime. Look around your mint or marjoram herb plants on a summer’s day and you may well disturb the micro “mint moth”, a reddish-brown moth with yellow spots. And then there are the “tiger moths”, generally dark with white spots or stripes and flashes of bright colour on their underwings, a delight to see on a sunny day. Did you know there is a National Moth Night every year? This year’s event will be held on July 8-10 (www.mothnight.info) so you have time to grow your enthusiasm before taking part. And if not, you can continue attracting moths to your lamp throughout the summer and discover different species as the season changes.

On Keynsham Group’s second walk of the year at the end of April, an international group of 10 (including Russians, a Portuguese and a Canadian) met near Sydney Gardens in Bath for a walk along the canal and through Bathampton Meadows with Lucy Starling from BTO & RSPB local groups. Lucy, who leads many walks, is full of insights and information about birds. Her advice for bird watching is to put listening first (she calls herself a “bird listener”) then you will see more. She has the birdsong down to a T with mnemonics for different birds: "short and scratchy - that's all you're going to get" - the sound of the common Whitethroat (we saw many of these during the morning), and the squeaky "I'm a dunnock, please listen to me, please listen to me" among them.

The highlight of the walk was having permission to go into the private Avon Wildlife Reserve at Bathampton Meadows, where we saw the many nesting Canadian geese, a dark-edged bee-fly (which looks like a bumblebee but is actually a fly) and the rare snipe, hearing a reed warbler - as well as finding otter poo. Despite the cold wind, it was a pleasure to get out in nature again, albeit in socially distanced groups. If you would like to hear more from Lucy on birdsong, search online for “Bird song in Sydney Gardens Bath with Lucy Starling” - an excellent Soundhound interview. l For further information on our group, visit www.keynshamawt.org, email keynshamawt@gmail.com or phone Kathy Farrell on 07850 508702.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Thank you for the chance to serve FIRSTLY, thank you. It’s a huge honour to be elected as your Metro Mayor, for this part of the world that I’m proud to call home. And whether you voted for me or not, I’m going to do my best for you and your family. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind since election day. The votes were counted up on the Saturday after polling day – and a big thank you to the counting staff who worked so hard to get us a result efficiently and in a covidsecure way. Then the results were announced aboard the SS Great Britain, a magnificent backdrop to take the helm on a new job! On the following Monday, I was officially sworn in as Mayor at Temple Quay and had my first meetings. I’ll be frank, I think we have some catching up to do. Because I’m not sure many people know we have a Metro Mayor at the moment locally, nationally or internationally. I want to change that, and put our area on the map. A woman I met the other day commented that it had been nice to see “from Somerset”

as a description on my interview on Good Morning Britain. We’re going to have more of that. My job is like Sadiq Khan’s in London and Andy Burnham’s in Manchester. It’s time for Fishponds, Frome Valley or Filton to lead the national conversation! I said during the campaign that my first priority was jobs, and that is why I will be holding a jobs and skills summit in my first 100 days in office. I’m already having conversations with local businesses and education providers about how we can build back better from the pandemic. If you have ideas, do let me know. My politics have always been red and green. We are in the midst of a climate emergency and I plan to bring my knowledge and experience as a former Environment Minister to the table. That’s why later this year I will launch my ‘Green Recovery Plan’. You might have also heard about my plans to make the West of England the bee and pollinator capital of the UK. I know I have a lot of people to meet,

reading to do, budgets to scrutinise and government ministers to challenge. I want to work in a constructive and cooperative way. What matters is that we secure the best for our area. And, just as a final thought, I think my dog might be more popular than me. Angel has also been on TV and got her own hashtag #dansdog – I’ll try not to let it go to her head! This is such an exciting time, but I want to end where I began. For the chance to serve – thank you.

Fun day in the forest THESE youngsters from Saltford Primary School had a great day outdoors in Manor Woods. The Early Years Foundation Stage pupils learned about birds, toasted marshmallows and enjoyed swinging in hammocks during the session led by SG Forest School. Many children said their favourite bit was the fire and eating a tasty sweet treat of s’mores.

June, 2021

From painting to planting, it's all grow!

K

The Pocket Park got a brush-up thanks to these Scouts, who gave the railings a lick of paint

EYNSHAM In Bloom volunteers have been busy bees working on projects in our area for South West In Bloom this July. They include the Scouts, who rolled up their sleeves and painted the railings at the Pocket Park. The KIB stall at the Baptist church on May 8 was a great success, with many packets of wildflower seeds being given to local people happy to get involved by planting seeds in starter pots. The mature wildflowers will be planted at the cemetery in the autumn. The bug hotels are now with the children at Somerdale and St Keyna schools, who are going to fill them with materials to keep little creatures happy over the winter months. One will be placed in Keynsham cemetery and the other in the Pocket Park. The station flowerbeds and town planters are being tended by our volunteers and will be a riot of colour this summer. If you would like to get involved with Keynsham In Bloom, please email keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or drop a note with your details through the letterbox at Keynsham Town Council on Temple Street.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Confession Jessie Burton Jessie Burton is the acclaimed writer of The Miniaturist and The Muse. Her latest novel is moving and beautiful. The story, which flips from 1982 to 2017, begins with Elise Morceau, who meets the writer Constance Holden on Hampstead Heath. A relationship develops – Connie is sophisticated and confident, everything Elise feels she is not. They move to LA for Connie’s work, and Elise makes a decision that will change her life and all those around the couple forever. In 2017, Rose is drifting through her life, in a relationship that is going nowhere and a dead-end job. After a causal remark from her father, she decides to uncover the story of her mother, who disappeared when she was a baby. She learns that the last person to see her is now a reclusive novelist, and so Rose makes her way to the door of Constance Holden, in search of a confession. An absorbing read with great characters – in particular Rose, who develops throughout the book. I cannot wait to see what Jessie Burton will write next.

Still Life

McDermid novels until now. The story involves DCI Karen Pirie, who heads a historical crime unit. One winter morning, a fisherman pulls a body from the sea. It appears that this man was a prime suspect in an old investigation when a prominent civil servant from the Scottish Office disappeared. Karen and her team are asked to review the file and are drawn into a world of secrets that involve Brit-Art of the 2000s and takes them from Paris to Dublin and back again to Edinburgh. There is also another case Karen is working on – a skeleton is found in an old camper van, and the clues point to a killer still out there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found Val McDermid an excellent writer. There is humour and contemporary plot lines. A really great read and I am now going to seek out more DCI Karen Pirie books.

Rachel Ignotofsky In recent months, there have been a number of books that highlight women in sport and politics, and now in science. Beautifully illustrated, it has great details about these amazing women. From the glamorous film actress Hedy Lamarr, who specialised in radio signals that became the foundation for GPS and wifi; to Jane Goodall, who was influential in her studies of chimpanzees; and Hypatia from Ancient Egypt, one of the earliest female astronomers and mathematician. An inspiring book.

Touch

An expression in silent relay Given, received, no need to say A hug or handshake, what does it convey To greet and affirm, a pleasure to see A hand on arm to guide, support kindly From birth this tactile sense is born Assurance held in cradled arms warm The bond as with love takes form Affections felt, to belong, to care Becoming family, a longing to share Emotions of love a touch on the cheek Just holding hands no need to speak Then a first kiss, arousal sensations seek Uncontrolled feelings a longing to hold Become one, dreams of pleasures untold Now in these times we cannot touch Fear of infection transmitted as such Anyone who lives outside of your bubble Keep your distance, stay safe Otherwise you’ll be in trouble Lost contact of this physical comfort of late Our need to be close to confirm and relate Has brought so much sorrow, heartache Express sad emotions of grief to fulfill Lost with no tomorrow and a chance to heal We all hope the norm may return one day It’s hard to get used to living in delay Unable to show small gestures that way So we can express all that’s missing so much Just having that needed, meaningful touch Enveloped in darkness, unable to hear Our sense of touch is heightened Reassuring, dispelling loneliness and fear That simple feeling of touch that says; It’s OK I’m here. Protesters outside the Avon Pension Fund HQ at Keynsham Civic Centre CLIMATE activists have staged a protest in Keynsham in their campaign against the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. They held their demonstration outside Avon Pension Fund’s HQ at Keynsham Civic Centre. Banners were unfurled depicting a fertile, thriving stretch of the Amazon, showing devastated, burnt forests, and asking: “Do you want your pension to fund this?” The images were accompanied by a soundtrack of chainsaws, burning wood and animals screeching in terror. The campaigners are calling on Avon Pension Fund to divest from the world’s largest asset manager, BlackRock, which they name as a major funder of Amazon destruction. The Transport for London (TFL) Pension Fund was also targeted by demonstrators, in the joint action by Amazon Rebellion and XR Money Rebellion. The activists handed in letters that call on pension fund directors to help protect the Amazon forest and shift their holdings away from BlackRock, which they say is the world’s largest investor in companies behind deforestation in the Amazon and around the world. Bristol campaigner Hilary Saunders, from

Amazon Rebellion, said: “Avon Pension Fund has almost £1 billion - more than 20% of its holdings - invested in BlackRock. “TfL’s pension scheme has £3 billion invested in funds managed by BlackRock. “Whether or not these funds are linked to environmental harm, such investments mean that these pension funds and their pension scheme members are effectively endorsing BlackRock’s environmental destruction of the Amazon.” Claude Fourcroy, spokesperson for XR Money Rebellion, said: “BlackRock has invested heavily in companies that are causing a climate catastrophe in the Amazon. “If we lose the Amazon, any hope of being able to limit global warming will be gone. We believe it is only when BlackRock faces widespread divestment that they will take the necessary action to protect our planet.” Jo Flanagan, a previous South Gloucestershire council employee who contributed to the Avon Pension Fund, said: “The Amazon rainforest is frequently called ‘the lungs of the world’ because it produces 20% of the world’s oxygen and absorbs a huge amount of CO2. “The Amazon rainforest is in crisis. It has been for some time, and thus the future of our entire planet is at stake.”

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

I relish the chance to make a difference

I

AM delighted to be writing today as the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset. A huge responsibility has been placed on my shoulders and, a week on, I am still incredibly humbled that local people gave me their vote. I absolutely relish the chance to get stuck in and to make a difference in all the villages, parishes, towns and cities across the force area. I thought this would be a good opportunity to let you know a little bit about me and my background; I spent over 30 years as an Army officer and served alongside police across the globe, gaining an understanding of their

role and sharing the risks they faced. As a result, I feel I have a good understanding of service life and the pressures those protecting communities face. Following my military service, I became deputy leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council and also sat on the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Panel, which supported and scrutinised the actions, decisions and performance of PCC Sue Mountstevens. In my role as PCC, I will be focusing on delivering a more efficient and effective police service, and I look forward to explaining in the future how together my office, officers and staff will be reassuring, refocusing and rebuilding a safer community

for Avon and Somerset. This week, I have started to build on my understanding of how the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and Avon and Somerset Police operates, as well as being able to meet numerous policing teams who are based at Express Park in Bridgwater. I want to meet as many officers and staff as possible to understand how I can make their jobs more effective and efficient so you – local people – receive the best police service. Into the summer, I intend to be out and about meeting local people and communities groups to understand your concerns and how I can help.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford If you feel your community group or local service would benefit from me visiting, please do let us by using the general enquiry form on our website www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov. uk/contact/contact-us

n LETTERS Have I found your jewellery?

June, 2021

How did BANES get it so wrong?

I was in the petrol station between the Waitrose roundabout and Saltford to use the cashpoint machine on May 7, and as I stepped out of my car I found some items of jewellery on the ground. The cashier had no knowledge of anyone reporting a loss, so I took the items to the nearby police station, only to be told that they don't deal with such things any more. I then went to Smiths jewellers in Keynsham High Street, who kindly inspected the items and told me that two of them are quite valuable. If anyone can prove by description what these items are, please contact me on 07779 113724. Alan Williams Boyd Road, Saltford

Helping animals I hope that Keynsham Voice readers can help me. I collect used stamps to help rescue animals. If anyone has any spare used stamps that we can use, please forward them to Stamp Donations, Mrs D Ashton, 66 Highbank, Roe Lee, Blackburn, Lancashire, BB1 9SX. D Ashton

My wife and I have lived in Keynsham since 1978. Our children went to Wellsway. There was always a happy, busy, bustling High Street. Businesses were thriving. In the Nineties, Church’s Newsagents on a Saturday would employ a team of teenagers (my daughter Caroline was one) to cope with the crowds of customers. Shoppers loved Keynsham. In May 2017, Bath and North East Somerset Council introduced what was meant to be an 18-month trial period for a one-way system. All of a sudden, we have long queues in all directions of standing traffic,

producing noxious gases in quantities previously unheard of. Ultimately the shoppers decided enough was enough and went elsewhere. So now we have a virtual ghost town. Everyone avoids Keynsham like the plague. And this was all before Covid. For a successful, thriving High Street with busy shops, you need a free-flowing traffic system. Funnelling unwilling motorists around a frustrating series of confined routes was a bad idea. We now all suffer the results of their utter folly. Allan Peters, Chewton Close

THE Friends of St John’s Church in Keynsham are looking for a new chairman or chairwoman. The charity provides for the restoration, upkeep and improvement of the 12th century church and its churchyard. The Friends have scope for expanding their activities, which a new chair could help bring about without significant time or effort, given the willingness of the current trustees to help. Shining examples of how to help others COMMUNITY heroes from Keynsham and Saltford are among those honoured in the Shining Light Awards. The awards recognise those in Bath and North East Somerset who have gone the extra mile to help others during the Covid-19 pandemic. Twelve individuals and community organisations were given awards. The winners received a certificate of recognition and a Bath Aqua Glass Award. They included the following: l Aimee, aged 8, a pupil at Saltford School, created an e-book called The Very Hungry Honeybee to raise funds for the NHS. She started to write and illustrate the book in January with the aim of raising £100 by her eighth birthday. She has far exceeded that goal and has so far raised a staggering £870 for NHS Charities Together. l David Yeoman, of the Crown Inn in Keynsham, adapted his services to offer a delivery-only shop, supplying food and urgent supplies to the local community 24-7 including NHS staff and key workers. l Christopher Essex has led a team of volunteers and used the resources available at Saltford Community Association to provide support to local residents during the pandemic. He has

set up a helpline, distributed leaflets, liaised with local shops, organised events, provided hot meals and raised money to offer a hardship fund for local residents. The Shining Light Awards are organised by Bath & North East Somerset Council in partnership with BSW CCG, BANES Virgin Care, Curo, Student Community Partnership (University of Bath, Bath Spa University & Bath College), and the 3SG. The former chair of Bath & North East Somerset Council for 2020/21, Councillor Andrew Furse, said: “The awards highlight the consistent support vulnerable people have received with the things many of us take for granted, such as posting a letter or popping to the shop. They are a recognition of how people have adapted to support the community when we can’t all be together in person.” The annual Community Awards are on hold until 2021/22 so that people who have supported others through the pandemic could be given recognition through the special Shining Light Awards this year. l If you would like to support Aimee’s NHS fundraising and request a copy of her book, visit her JustGiving page at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ TheVeryHungryHoneyBee

David Yeoman was nominated for his award by local resident Gwen Edwards. In her nomination, she said: “At the start of the first lockdown, like all pubs, David had to close the Crown Inn at very short notice. Not to be defeated, he converted the pub into a delivery-only shop, supplying food and urgently needed supplies (even toilet paper!) to the local community 24-7. “As the situation changed, David continued to adapt. He provided home-made oven-ready meals and takeaways. Later, he converted the pub into a corner shop with everything you could imagine. He enabled NHS staff to shop there any time, day or night. They just had to call and he would open up. “He has generously provided free school meals and free meals for those in need throughout, and continues to support Keynsham Food Bank with donations. As the situation and rules changed again, he turned the garage into a shop, and converting the pub into a take-away coffee and cake shop - all whilst continuing to provide free meals for those in need. “Now that pub gardens can reopen, he has built a garden kitchen, and he and his team continue to bring joy, hope and care to the community. He has been a true beacon of community and generosity, and has demonstrated utter resilience over the roller coaster of a year."

n WILDCATS GIRLS' FOOTBALL

Wildcats are going for goal GIRLS’ football is going from strength to strength at Fry Club JFC in Keynsham. Over 60 girls gathered for recent training sessions at their Somerdale home. Kelsey Manning, co-founder of the girls’ Wildcats programme and girls’ player pathways at Fry Club, said: “When we started a girls’ football team at Fry Club Juniors, we never imagined how much it could possibly grow. “Our sole aim was to encourage as many young girls as we could to participate in football and keep them in the game by one day providing a player pathway to senior football if they so wished. “With the help of the FA initiative, SSE Wildcats, Frys’ girls’ youth football, now proudly coach girls from age 4 to13 and we aim to continue to grow our great club. “A special thank-you to Bernie Grimes (co-founder) and all of our volunteer coaches - we couldn’t do it without them!” Training takes place at 10.30am on Saturdays. Anyone interested in joining the Wildcats should email Bernie Grimes at Bernard.Grimes@integral.co.uk

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

Mixed fortunes as league action resumes THE 2021 season is now well under way for Frys Bowling Club. With the change in Covid-19 restrictions, we can now admit a limited number of spectators, so you are welcome to visit. On the green, most of our early-season friendlies were cancelled but have now resumed. The Bristol and District League started on time and has seen a mixed start for Frys: April 29: Frys welcomed Long Ashton in the league in their first game since 2019. Rink 3 quickly took an 8-shot lead and continued pulling away. Rinks 1 and 2 had a tighter start. A mistake from Long Ashton's skip on rink 1 cut a big count down. Rink 3 picked up a comfortable win, and the game looked secure. Long Ashton broke 13 ends of singles on rink 2, including a

7, cutting Frys’ advantage. Frys held on, taking a 49-37 win with 8 points to sit 2nd in table. Scores: Rink 1: 17-13; Rink 2: 8-19; Rink 3: 24-6; Frys 49-38, Long Ashton (8-2). May 6: Frys travelled to first-place Henleaze 'A'. After a close start Henleaze took a comfortable lead. Rink 1 closed their deficit and pulled level. Henleaze took rink 2 comfortably, as well as rink 3, leaving rink 1 with too much to do. A poor penultimate end finished Frys hopes of taking points in the 56-35 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 13-23; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 10-14; Frys 35-56, Henleaze 'A' (0-10). May 13: The third game saw Frys play Imperial on a damp artificial surface. Imperial held a commanding lead for much of game,

with rink 3 the only bright point for Frys. The game turned in the closing stages, when rink 3 scored 11 shots in the final 3 ends from rink 3. Rinks 1 and 2 picked up shots, leaving Imperial 2 shots up with one end left. A loose end, the skip narrowly missing the jack and going tight with his final bowl, saw Frys lose by 46-49 with only 2 points and falling to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 10-20; Rink 2: 10-22; Rink 3: 7-26; Frys 46-49, Imperial (2-8). Please contact our secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@ gmail.com, to apply for membership, arrange tuition or more information. Bristol Bobcats Molly Willcox and Dani Searson preparing for the start of the WB-UK Women's Baseball League

“The Bears have a good team with strong pitchers so we knew everything was going to be tight. We need to play error-free baseball in the field if we are to succeed this season.” Bristol Bats warmed up for their first South West and Wales Baseball League (SWWBL) fixture by beating Weston Jets 23-7 and 24-4 in friendlies at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre on May 9. Paul Carter and rookie Graeme Lawton both hit inside-the-park home runs in two solid

performances by the Bristol side. “It was a very encouraging performance and we are looking very solid this year,” said Bats manager Tom Rowe. “It was good to see improvements in the team since last season and I hope we can keep the level of performance up until the end of September.” The Brunels and the Buccaneers were due to have a tune up before their first league fixture but the weather put paid to the intra-club friendly.

n BRISTOL BASEBALL

Badgers lose out in close encounters BRISTOL Badgers went down 5-4 and 6-5 in their opening day British Baseball Federation (BBF) AAA games against Bournemouth Bears on May 9. A series of errors cost the Badgers at crucial times in both games despite good all-round performances from Luke Claflin and Mike Osbourn with the ball and bat. Both pitched well and were able to hold a strong Bears line-up in check for most of the afternoon. Claflin had four hits against good Bears pitching, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Badgers debutant Mattia Papini had a strong afternoon in the field and grabbed two hits in the second game “I know the team is disappointed that a couple of errors probably cost us coming away with two wins,” said Rhodri Theaker, head coach of the team, based at Somerdale in Keynsham.
