Swings are back in action at busy park The popular swings in Keynsham Memorial Park have finally been replaced – after wet weather delayed work at the site. The four-seat junior swings were removed from the Upper Memorial Park play area earlier this year after they corroded beyond repair. Wet weather delayed work to install a new set, which took place during the February halfterm week. Keynsham Town Council clerk Cheryl Scott said: “The frame on the existing swing had corroded and broken so the swing had to be decommissioned and has therefore been out of use for some time while quotes were obtained. Several residents contacted the town council inquiring when it was to be replaced and how quickly. The town council has also received a complaint about the work taking place during half-term. “Works undertaken in the Memorial Park are subject to restrictions by B&NES Council and part of this is weatherdependent. The contractors took the earliest opportunity presented by somewhat drier weather to complete the task, which unfortunately occurred between Tuesday and Thursday of half-term. “However, both adjacent sides of the play area remained open for the duration, with access to the rest of the play equipment, and the new swing was operational on the Friday

ready for the weekend.” Meanwhile, following halfterm the town council is sending a survey to all primary schools for children to complete about their favourite parks and play equipment, while another survey for older children and adults about local recreation spaces will also be available as part of the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) project. The results of the surveys will help the town council draw up a plan for managing or refurbishing local play areas, as well as forming part of the NDP when it is completed. A funding bid for improvements at Kelston Park has been delayed until August, after the results of the children’s consultation are in. Talks between the town council and developer Barratt Homes over the adoption of Holmoak play area by the council fell through last month and the site will now be managed by Pinnacle, the management company overseeing the rest of the green spaces on the development, which is funded by the residents.

Public to quiz West metro mayor and transport bosses on future of travel

From Page 1 The meeting will be a chance to hear updates from the two transport firms and from Mr Bowles on plans for transport across the region, including the ambitious Joint Local Transport Plan (JLTP), which is out for public consultation until March 20. The JLTP sets out up to £10 billion-worth of proposals to change the way people travel around the West of England by 2036, including a number that will affect roads and public transport in and around Keynsham and Saltford. Keynsham Town Council has been asked to give its views on the JLTP and in order to gauge residents’ priorities will hold a second meeting two days later on Thursday, March 7, asking for views on local bus and rail services, parking, through traffic, the potential impact of new developments and the Bristol Airport expansion on traffic, walking and cycling in the town and more. The JLTP identifies the A4 between Bath and Bristol as one of the four busiest corridors in the region, which spans Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Proposals include a new metrobus route travelling along the A4, with a light rail link from Hicks Gate to Bristol a longerterm plan, while the park and ride site at Brislington would be moved to south of Hicks Gate. The layout of the Hicks Gate junction itself would also be altered, with a new link between the A4 and the A4174 ring road, while a new link road would connect Hicks Gate to the A37 Wells Road at Whitchurch – a plan that has met strong opposition from people living in Whitchurch who want to protect the green belt from development. Another proposal in the JLTP is to create a link between the A4 and Avon Mill Road, including bridges over the railway line and possibly the Avon, while the Avon Mill Road and A4175 Keynsham Road junction could become a roundabout. The plan also includes a package of improved bus services

Proposals to alter Hicks Gate are part of the Joint Local Transport Plan

and cycle routes, including a direct link to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, as well as upgrades to other road junctions, including the Waitrose roundabout. Improvements for Keynsham train station are also included while in Saltford campaigners say they are relieved to see proposals for the reopening of the village’s station included in the JLTP after raising concerns the plan seemed to have disappeared from previous documents. The plan says the restoration of rail services to the village will be considered “during the life of the JLTP”, which sets out plans until 2036. Chris Warren, chair of Saltford Parish Council, said: “Saltford Parish Council will argue once again that reopening a railway station at Saltford as part of MetroWest is deliverable, affordable, and accords with the overarching aims and policies of the West of England Combined Authority. It is a mission of Saltford Parish Council, supported by residents, to reopen Saltford Station as soon as possible.” The JLTP also says that priority for buses travelling through Saltford would improve journey times and adds that a bypass has been considered to allow space for this. Further work on the options available will be carried out before a decision on a bypass for Saltford is made, the document says. Speaking on the JLTP, Mr Bowles said: “This is an ambitious plan to keep people moving and tackle congestion, whilst supporting economic growth. It considers a wide range of options to support sustainable travel

including rail, bus, cycling, walking, mass and rapid transit and electric vehicles. Working together, we can ensure that transport in the West of England is fit for the future.” People across the region are now being asked what they think of the proposals before a

final plan is published later this year. Details are available on the website – www.travelwest. info/jltp – where comments can also be submitted until March 20. People can also take part in the consultation at the Regional Transport Forum in Keynsham on March 5. Anyone interested in attending the forum should register via Eventbrite at regionaltransportforum.eventbrite.co.uk by noon on Monday, March 4. Members of the public will be invited to submit questions related to the agenda items, to GWR, First or the mayor, at the start of the meeting. The forum starts at 4.30pm and will run until 6pm. Keynsham Town Council’s meeting on Thursday, March 7, will be taking place at 7pm in the Key Centre and all are welcome to attend.

Community rallies round couple after devastating loss

Thousands of pounds have been donated to give a Keynsham couple another chance at IVF treatment, after they suffered the heartbreak of losing their baby daughter in December. Rhian and Matt Ridgway had been due to welcome their baby girl at the end of November but she was tragically stillborn. The couple named her River Emilia and they were cared for at the RUH’s Forget Me Not suite at the hospital’s birthing centre, which supports families who have suffered bereavement. Little River had been conceived through IVF and any further rounds of treatment will cost £6,000. Relatives rallying round

the devastated couple decided to launch a campaign to raise money to give them another chance at becoming parents – and have been amazed by the community’s response, raising more than £4,000 so far. Matt’s sister Samantha Holt said: “Losing River is the most painful thing we’ve ever been through as a family but we’ve always been very close so we’re helping each other through it. “There will always be up and down days but we think of her every day and see her in every rainbow or bright star. “We’ve all been blown away by the amount of support our fundraising page has had. We

Rhian and Matt Ridgway with River never expected it to raise so much. Even strangers have donated so we’re incredibly thankful.” Now five of the couple’s family members – Matt’s sisters Samantha and Claire, stepmum Beverley, brother James and James’s girlfriend Fai – will be

running the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday, March 17, and are hoping sponsorship will add to the total already raised. Anyone who wishes to sponsor the runners can visit their fundraising page at https:// www.gofundme.com/matt-amprhians-ivf

Proposals for High Street improvements finalised as council makes bid for £1.5m

A bid for £1.5 million to revamp parts of Keynsham town centre with the aim of attracting more people and businesses to the High Street is due to be submitted this month. Last month leaders at Bath and North East Somerset Council approved proposals to improve public spaces on a section of the High Street between Charlton Road and Rock Road. The plan will now be sent to the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which will decide whether to award the scheme a grant of £1.5m. The council says the oneway High Street arrangement introduced in 2017 has reduced nitrogen dioxide levels to within European health guidelines and will therefore be made permanent, with the “public realm” improvements drawn up following feedback from the town.

The proposals include pavement widening, new lighting in the walkways linking the High Street to Ashton Way and the Memorial Park and upgrades to pedestrian crossings. The bus stop on the High Street will also be enlarged to make it more accessible for Diala-Ride passengers and repositioned to allow cars to pass when a bus is stopped. More seating will be installed and there will be improvements to cycle lanes and the disabled parking bays in the High Street. The plans also involve better street signage and looking at ways to make the centre greener, with more planting and by working with the churches on the High Street to enhance the areas outside them. Councillor Paul Myers, cabinet member for economic and community regeneration, said:

“Across the UK high streets are struggling. We want to ensure our local high streets thrive. Improving Keynsham town centre’s streets and spaces will make shopping, doing business and visiting the town a more pleasant experience which in turn will help to strengthen the local economy. We have listened to residents, taken on board their comments and updated and revised our plans accordingly.” If the funding is approved, work is expected to begin in spring 2020 and be completed by March 2021. Councillor Charles Gerrish, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, added: “These public realm improvements form one of the many initiatives, including the £10m refurbishment of the leisure centre and the 95 new riverside homes, that will help future proof the economy of the

centre of our town as Keynsham continues to grow.” As part of the consultation, 140 people responded to share their views on the proposals, with the top three issues identified by those taking part including pedestrian safety and convenience, then bus facilities and then pollution and noise. The report on the consultation said that parking and congestion “remains a key negative” for many. People were also asked which areas were most in need of improvement in the longer term, with the Ashton Way/Charlton Road mini roundabout, Temple Street, the Upper High Street and Station Road Link coming out on top. The council said further work will take place in the future when funding become available. To see full details of the plans and consultation results, visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/keynsham

A new publication covering almost 200 years of a business synonymous with Keynsham will be launched in the town this month. Fry’s of Bristol is written by David Williams and comprises three volumes. It spans the years 1728 to 1935, exploring the foundation, growth and decline of the famous chocolate company. It runs to around 250,000 words and has been described as “a definitive history of this Bristol institution”. Mr Williams will be joined by some of the firm’s former employees at the launch,

which will be held in the very place Fry’s made its home in Keynsham – the Somerdale factory, now the Chocolate Quarter retirement complex. The launch will take place on Wednesday, March 6, from 2pm when Mr Williams will be on hand to explain more about the story behind the publication. Copies, which can be signed, will be on sale on the day for £10 per volume. There will also be a display of Fry’s memorabilia. The event is open to the public. ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

T

he beat boundaries are changing again, so how will this affect Keynsham and Saltford residents? In real terms, it shouldn’t change anything. We are losing some of our rural areas and gaining Newton St Loe, which includes the Bath Spa University campus. We have been holding meetings with the current beat manager and are looking for a seamless transition. You will still see just as much of the team out and about in the town centre but on occasion we will have to patrol the new areas in the same way that we had to patrol the old ones. The team have been active in our targeted patrol areas. These comprise crime hotspots and areas identified from intelligence gathering. To determine these areas, we use crime trends and figures. We also monitor the local social media pages and use information from Crimestoppers and other intelligence sources. Crime has been steady recently but we have suffered some burglaries. These have been creeper-style break-ins with offenders accessing houses during the day through insecure doors so, please, as the weather gets better still look to keep your properties secure even if you are at home. Also pass on this information to anyone you deem more vulnerable, whether that’s

family, friends or a neighbour. Other break-ins have targeted garages and sheds where either tools or motorcycles are being targeted. Our advice with all of this is be alert, not alarmed. Our crime figures are not massive so a slight change or a couple of offences will give us a big spike in perceived crime. As mentioned in other months, vehicle crime where tools are the target is still happening across the whole force area so please don’t leave tools in vehicles where possible. It’s amazing how much valuable kit people keep in their vehicles with really poor security measures. Social media tells us this month that it’s the lower level offences that are bothering residents – dog fouling and litter are high on the reported incidents. These are the most basic of things and reducing them is really achievable. We are empowered to issue on-the-spot fixed penalty notices for both of these offences and we will do. So the easiest way not to have to fall foul of this (if you pardon the pun) is to clean up after yourselves and your pets. If you witness someone committing these offences, please report it and we will offer them suitable advice about their behaviour.

A social media user posted this photo of a police car in Keynsham to identify offenders in the near future. Lastly, we are all for a bit of fun and we certainly have broad shoulders when it comes to having the mickey taken out of us. We spotted this post on social media where we were being poked fun at, above. It did make me laugh, but on a

serious note, sometimes, when we can justify it, we have to ignore the rules and deal with incidents in the quickest and safest way. On this occasion the officers were attending a 999 call with safety concerns, which resulted in them abandoning the car in this manner. The matter was resolved without incident.

Good news in relation to the CCTV systems in and around Keynsham – they appear to be back online and as such we can now use them again as an effective tool in the prevention and detection of crime. Bath and North East Somerset Council has updated the old cameras to a digital system controlled centrally and monitored 24 hours a day. We can obtain this footage and hope to use it

Jet with handler Martyn Bolt, above; air scent dog Buddy on a turntable ladder, left

Meet service’s four-legged firefighters! Two new recruits will soon be helping firefighters at Hicks Gate fire station come to the aid of injured people – using just their noses. Two-year-old springer cross Buddy and two-year-old Labrador Sally are training to become “air scent dogs” with crews at the Keynsham station and are expected to be joining their colleagues on rescues by the end of next month. The dogs are learning to use their powerful sense of smell to locate casualties in a range of different settings, from collapsed buildings to woodlands, providing vital support to their two-legged crewmates. Firefighter and handler Martin Tully, who is responsible for Buddy’s training, said: “The role of a modern firefighter has changed and Avon Fire and Rescue Service deals with an increasing number of varying incidents, one of which is urban search and rescue. “The dogs are trained using toy rewards – if a dog successfully finds a casualty, they are rewarded with the toy and a game of tug.” He added that as part of their training they had been introduced to a wide range of

Air scent dogs Buddy, left, and Sally with their protective footwear people to help them learn to trace human scents. As well as Buddy and Sally, the service has also welcomed back Jet, a five-year-old black Labrador trained to sniff out the causes of fires. Jet passed his fire

investigation dog training course at less than a year old – the youngest ever – but had been out of action while a new handler was found for him. Now he has been teamed up with station manager Martyn Bolt, visiting cold fire scenes to

detect accelerants such as petrol, freezing on the spot to let Martyn know he has found something. Martyn said: “I’ve been part of the service for 23 years and have had extensive fire investigation training. “When it was clear Jet needed a new handler and that the service could use him in a positive and proactive way, I jumped on the opportunity. “Jet really is exceptional at what he does. He will be able to help the service identify ignitable substances which could have been used to start a fire and it never ceases to amaze me when he locates the source of a fire. “Not only will Jet be a positive step for fire investigation, but he will also take part in providing information by sharing crucial fire safety messages to the community. “I’m proud to be his handler and I look forward to working with him over the coming years.” During his visits to fire scenes – which are never still hot – Jet wears boots to protect his paws and his reward for a job done well is a ball, his favourite toy. People can keep up to date with the fire dogs’ work on Twitter @AFRSDog

B&NES agrees council tax rise of 2.95% Council tax is set to rise by almost three per cent for households across Bath and North East Somerset after B&NES agreed its budget for 2019/20. Keynsham councillor and B&NES finance chief Charles Gerrish (Cons) told a meeting of the full council the budget was a “balanced and prudent” approach that would deliver on residents’ priorities – social care, transport and housing and protecting frontline services. The increase means the bill for a Band D property will rise by £39.76, while a one per cent rise in the precept for social care will add another £13.47 to a Band D home’s bill. Mr Gerrish said: “Despite the challenges, this is a budget which will deliver for Bath and North East Somerset. It is a budget that prioritises our children, elderly and most vulnerable residents. A budget that addresses the challenges we face.” The council has cut £72.4

million from its spending over the past six years, with another £8.9m expected to be saved over the next year, by which time, in 2020/21, the revenue support grant received by the council from central Government will have reduced to zero, from £21 million in 2015/16. Councillor Mark Shelford (Cons) said he felt that in the circumstances the budget was a “masterpiece”, but Councillor Dine Romero (LD) said it was “a list of cuts, cuts and more cuts” adding that “residents are going to be paying far more for far less”. The council says savings will be achieved by moving to more online services and reducing office costs, saving on contracts, setting up new commissioning arrangements for adult social care and prioritising what services it offers by developing a “core offer”, while increasing income from Heritage Services, the department that runs local

museums and historic public buildings. The budget was passed by 33 votes for to 22 against, with two abstentions. As reported last month, Keynsham Town Council will increase its precept by two per cent, which means a Band D home will pay £91.29 to the town council in

2019/20, an increase of 3.4p per week. In Saltford, the parish council has increased its precept by 2.2 per cent.

Group unveils first Viking find in village Local historians in Saltford have revealed an exciting find that has raised some intriguing questions about the Vikings who may once have occupied the area. A carved buckle from the period was discovered by metal detectorist Bob Mordle, from Saltford Environment Group’s History Project, on the north side of the village, close to St Mary’s Church, last year. It has since been authenticated by the British Museum’s regional finds officer, who described it as a “find of note” which is of “regional importance”. The copper buckle features animals carved in the Scandinavian “ringerike” style, with a similar example found in the Thames in London dated to the 11th century, according to the British Museum’s Portable

Antiquities Scheme website. It is the first Viking artefact to be found in the village and in SEG’s online museum, the group speculates whether the buckle could have been dropped during a Viking siege as Anglo-Saxons barricaded themselves in St Mary’s tower. Or could it have been dropped by an Anglo-Saxon who claimed it after a battle with Vikings? The public will have the chance to take a closer look and ponder how the buckle arrived in the village themselves when it is displayed for the first time at Saltford Heritage Centre at St Mary’s Church Hall on March 30 from 9.30am to noon, and again during Old Village Day as part of Saltford Festival this summer. In the meantime, there is more information on the find and Viking rule in England in

‘Chewing Gum Alley’ cleans up its act! Keynsham’s notorious “Chewing Gum Alley” has been given a spring clean – while an eyecatching bin has been installed so that discarded gum can be recycled into anything from lunch boxes to wellies! Armed with a jet wash, members of Bath and North East Somerset Council’s cleansing team tackled the walkway that links Ashton Way and the High Street on February 10, removing the sticky dried gum from the pavement. Members of volunteer litterpicking group the Keynsham Wombles had already visited the area and circled every bit of gum they could find to demonstrate to passers-by how much had been dropped. They then joined the cleansing team to sweep up as the jet wash did its work and explain to shoppers what was happening in the lane. People stepping onto the High Street from the alleyway are now greeted by the sight of a bright pink GumDrop bin, which can hold up to 500 pieces of gum. Once it is full, the used gum will be taken away for recycling and can be turned into a range of items such as coffee mugs, wellington boots – and new GumDrop bins. The bin is being provided by the Wombles in a year-long trial, with funding from Keynsham Town Council. Erica Davies, founder of the Keynsham Wombles, said: “Chewing gum litter is a significant problem because it is so difficult to remove. Not only is it a nuisance if we accidentally step in it, but it contributes to microplastic pollution as it slowly breaks into smaller pieces.

Team appeals for extra hands to run popular hall The team of volunteers who run Keynsham’s busy Fear Hall are appealing for new people to fill a number of vacancies. Trustees on the management committee are hoping to recruit a new treasurer, minute secretary and get some extra help for routine maintenance of the building. Chairman of the management committee Richard Dyson said: “These roles are not onerous

and will only involve a few hours a month. If we can share the work with some extra volunteers then we will be able to run more smoothly in future.” The hall has been home to many local groups and societies over the years, including Keynsham Photographic Society, the Fear Short Mat Bowls Club, the Old Time Dance Club and Keynsham Bridge Club, as well as

providing a venue for a range of exercise and dance classes. The Fear Hall is a registered charity and has to be financially self-sufficient, with all profits from lettings going back into maintenance and improvements at the building. Pole fitness class members show off their skills with dazzling charity show Dozens of women overcame their nerves to take to the stage and showcase the skills they’ve learned at a Keynsham pole fitness studio – raising thousands of pounds in the process. Around 60 members of Studio 11 Pole Fitness, which is based in Temple Court, put on a show at Saltford Hall on February 16, showing off their aerial moves set to movie soundtracks. The venue was packed with family and friends, who had sponsored each of the performers to take part. Local businesses gave around £2,000-worth of prizes for a raffle on the night, Saltford Community Association donated 30 per cent of bar takings, while a movie soundtrack quiz for the audience also added funds to the total. Added to ticket sales and individual sponsorship – with one member raising an impressive £750 alone – the event raised more than £5,000 for the charity Help Bristol’s Homeless, which aims to provide accommodation for those living on the streets. Lisa Henderson, who co-owns Studio 11 with Vania Vitito, said: “These are everyday ladies who never dreamed of performing in front of 250 people. The hall was packed and their friends and families were totally blown away by the show. “Our members were nervous but wanted to give back to the community doing something they enjoy and after the perfor-

mance were elated they had done it and so proud of themselves. “The team at Saltford Hall were amazing and we had huge

support from local businesses and I want to say thank you to everyone who supported us, including our instructors Lucille

Luric, Jennifer Shuring and Cat Smith who were on hand helping to keep everyone calm.” Lisa moved her studio to Keynsham in 2017 from Wiltshire, where she and her members raised around £50,000 for charities over 15 years with an annual show – a tradition she intends to keep up in Keynsham. Studio 11 runs non-mixed ability classes, starting from complete beginners and in a range of styles, and they are open to women and men. The performers aim to recreate how it might have sounded had the famous foursome played the album live themselves. Festival organisers say they expect the show – which will be performed at The Space on during Festival Week Monday, July 1 – will sell out fast, with tickets available soon at https:// keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk/ Here Comes The Sun will hopefully be an appropriate anthem for the festival weekend on Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, when live performances in the park will once again fill both days. Politics and music in the mix at Space

The Space in Keynsham is continuing to bring diverse events to the town – with political debate sandwiched between Motown classics and an appearance by an accomplished harpist in the coming weeks. Emma Hutchinson and James Lambeth will take to the stage with the Soul Shakers on Saturday, March 2, from 8pm to perform Motown, soul and blues duets from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye in their show It Takes Two. The tour, titled Populism,

Fascism and How to Defend Democracy, is a series of panel debates discussing the current political landscape, the rise of the far right, increased polarisation and the rise of “post-truth”. Ms Scott-Cato will be joined by panellists Dr Anna Bull, a professor in politics, languages and international studies at Bath University, local democracy journalist Daniel Mumby and Green PPC for North East Somerset Fay Whitfield, with further guests and chair to be announced. Project lifts the lid on period poverty –

Registered Charity 202151

A simple box is making a world of difference to students who might have been forced to skip school in the past – simply because of their periods. The Red Box Project Keynsham is supplying nine local schools, including Wellsway and Broadlands Academy, with boxes filled with sanitary products and new underwear, which are freely available to girls and young women who need them. Jackie Sheehan, who coordinates the project in Keynsham with neighbour Vicki Why, said it came as a shock to learn that “period poverty” – where girls and women can’t afford to buy essential sanitary products – was a reality for local youngsters. She said: “A friend asked me to ‘like’ a page on Facebook for the South Brislington Red Box Project and I wondered what it was about. 12 per cent had had to improvise sanitary wear because of the cost. The Red Box Project was launched in Portsmouth in the same year by three friends, who contacted local schools to ask if they would like a constantly stocked box of sanitary prod-

ucts after reading about period poverty. Two years later, there are now 2,718 boxes stocked with free sanitary care around the country, provided by 241 projects. Jackie, who works for an accountancy firm, launched the

She said: “Nationally, the Red Box Project has expanded massively and so quickly. It’s sad that there’s the need in this country but great that people want to support the project and be involved. “The independent shops in Keynsham have been brilliant and I have had great support from the WIs in Keynsham and Saltford. I gave a talk at Saltford WI recently and came away with a sack of donated products, which was so lovely – many of the ladies said they could understand from experience what it was like having periods at school and really felt they were helping

young people. This is testament to community kindness – all of the supplies come from within the community to help local girls and I really love that.” As well as both local secondaries, Jackie – helped by husband Steve – also keeps Red Boxes stocked at a number of primary schools in the town as well as John Cabot Academy in Kingswood and Hanham Woods Academy. They also work with schools to provide supplies to those who need them over the school holidays. Schools are given posters to display in bathrooms and in staff rooms to let pupils and staff know the boxes are available, with some going a step further and even giving assemblies on the issue, Jackie said. Be a winner with the WIN community

A

fresh new Women’s Business & Wellbeing Networking Group is coming to Saltford. WIN (Women’s Informative Networking) will be meeting on the first Friday of every month at Saltford Hall from 11am to 1pm, starting April 5. WIN started in Gloucestershire and has proved so successful that one of its members, Business Support Consultant Merryl Elias, has extended it to the Bristol and Bath area. It will bring new benefits to the community by helping local businesses to flourish and promote wellbeing in an increasingly stressful world. Merryl enthused: “Both my busi-

ness and wellbeing have benefited greatly from being involved with WIN. We have an interactive Facebook page where you can keep in contact with like-minded businesswomen, share ideas and help each other. The monthly meetings are friendly and supportive – not at all scary! There’s a mailing list for those who don’t use social media much so that they don’t miss out on news and events. It’s unusual to have such an opportunity without having to commit to a high membership cost. You simply pay as you go to attend the meetings – it’s very affordable. We know businesswomen like speakers who can explain clearly

From left, Merryl Elias from WIN Bristol and Bath, with Sam Johnstone and Andrea Marsh from WIN Gloucestershire

subjects they really want to learn about, whether it’s for business or health and wellbeing. At WIN we ensure you get exactly this, in a safe, private space where you can talk openly. We have regular “Mindset Coaching” slots and a “Wellbeing Slot” to reduce stress. Every meeting enables members to learn, gain confidence, refer and meet others as well as take some quality time for themselves. The launch event will include a fantastic talk by Louise Jenner, who

will be explaining how to make our online presence “IRRESISTIBLE” to our dream clients. The good thing about being there at the start is that you can help shape the future meetings – we want to meet people’s needs so that they get maximum benefit from being involved.” l For information contact Merryl Elias, FT Business Support Solutions, 07914 920248, email: contact@ftbusinesssupport solutions.com.

n YOUTH & EDUCATION Pupils take home web safety lessons Youngsters at a Keynsham school learned how to keep themselves safe online with a day focused on the worldwide web. Pupils at Chandag Infant School took home some important messages on Safer Internet Day, taught through stories and activities. With the story of “Zap and Zoom”, friends who like to play games together online, pupils learned some actions to help them remember to ask for permission, make good choices and to always check if unsure. While Reception class made up songs to share the e-safety messages, Year 1 made the worldwide web out of string, asking permission before rolling it to their friends. Year 2 got creative and made their own comic strips about making wise choices online. Safer Internet Day took place around the world on February 5 and involved schools, police, councils, charities, companies, the Government and more.

Reading volunteer scheme brings generations together A number of schools in Keynsham are getting behind a scheme that brings together retired residents and youngsters learning to read. The project has begun by connecting residents at the Chocolate Quarter with pupils at the neighbouring Somerdale ET Primary, where head teacher Jo Barr and staff have already established links between the two communities by taking pupils to visit the retirement village. St Keyna and St John’s primary schools will be the next to get involved and now the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) is calling on more older people in Keynsham to sign up. RSVP set up the Keynsham project with St Monica Trust, which owns the Chocolate Quarter, as a way of benefiting

youngsters by helping them to improve their reading and enabling retired residents to keep active and contribute to their community. Joan Whitehead, the RSVP regional schools development organiser, said more than 100 similar links between schools and older people had been set up in Bath, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and she was keen to see the scheme up and running in Keynsham too. An RSVP spokesperson said:

“At a meeting for residents at the Chocolate Quarter, Jeni Lander, an RSVP volunteer at Twerton Infant School in Bath, described the thrill she gained from listening to pupils read and seeing their progress. This encouraged residents to consider what they too might gain from becoming a volunteer. “Schools already working with RSVP are delighted by their involvement. Colin Thompson, the headmaster at Broomhill School in Bristol, has spoken of the difference his volunteer has made to helping struggling readers find enjoyment and success in their reading.” Anyone who is interested in finding out more can visit the RSVP website at www.rsvp-west. org.uk, email joan.whitehead@ rsvp-west.org.uk or call 07854 164307.

Trust to close studio school,  DfE  confirms A secondary school run by the Keynsham-based Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust will close in August 2020, the Department for Education has confirmed. The Bath Studio School opened in 2014 but has never been more than half full and struggled to meet its costs, said the trust. Government ministers have now given their consent to the closure after five weeks of discussions with the trust. Pupils will be able to complete their studies before the school is shut. The news has been met with disappointment by families who had hoped it could be saved. Andrea Arlidge, the chief executive of WMAT, said: “Ultimately, there is simply not enough demand in the Bath area for the type of education that TBSS provides. While closure

of the school has now been confirmed for August 2020, we remain fully committed to our students and staff while at TBSS and as they look to the future. “We remain excited by the potential of Aspire Academy, our special school that shares the site and building with TBSS. We are aiming to further develop Aspire to provide much-needed special school places for children and young people on the autistic spectrum with challenging needs. Through our studio school in Keynsham – IKB, which is focused on STEM subjects – we also remain committed to the studio school concept for particular subjects and students.” The studio school initiative was launched in 2010 and around 20 across the country have closed or have announced plans to close.

Young lifesavers’ hard work gets results Young lifesavers from Keynsham held their own against 25 university teams at a competition in Warwick. The team of four from Keynsham Lifesaving Club put their skills to the test in five different disciplines, challenging university teams from across the UK at Warwick University’s annual competition. The team’s best results came in the simulated emergency situations designed to assess their ability to perform first-aid and water-based rescues under pressure. The first incident was a “gas explosion” set in a

restaurant, and the Keynsham team evacuated multiple casualties to safety before performing first-aid to secure ninth place. In the water-based incident, the team had just two minutes to locate and rescue seven casualties split into two groups 25 metres apart, a test that secured them 12th place. Overall the team were placed 16th, a result that has made their club “immensely proud”. For more about Keynsham Lifesaving Club, visit www.klsc. co.uk or contact chairman@ klsc.co.uk. n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Alex is our top shot January saw no fewer than 85 Scouts and Explorers being instructed in air rifle target shooting at Keynsham Scout Hut. Young people of different backgrounds, ages and abilities came together to try their hand at the fourth annual 1st Keynsham Shooting Competition. Using breakbarrel air rifles, they shot .177 air pellets into just 10cm square targets at a distance of 10m (33 feet). Success was high, with a lot of the young people scoring well. Sunday, February 3, was finals night. The top five shooters from the four units arrived at the Scout hut, fighting the snow and ice, parents in tow. A quick practice for each of the shooters before the semi-finals, where they each had to pitch their knowledge and skill against each other to win their spot in the finals. Ten scoring shots allowed the judges to rank them in their Scout groups so that they could be presented a first, second and third-place certificate and move on to the excitement of the final round. Twenty were whittled down to 12 and after a further 10 shots, we had our champions. This year saw a change in the leader board – where normally an older Explorer would claim first prize, 2019 saw Scout Alex take the first prize of the Francis

Clifton Trophy, representing Axe Troop. The trophy was presented by Tony Clifton, the father of Francis, a 1st Keynsham Scout for many years before cancer tragically took his life in his early 20s. Second and third place were also taken by Scouts Dylan and Charlie, respectively, from Frome Troop. The scores for the top five were separated by just 10 points. The evening was rounded off with thanks to all those who hosted, participated and encouraged the young people to participate. l Would you like to sponsor the Keynsham Scout Air Rifle Shooting Club as they seek to improve what they can provide? with chair Denise James Friday Afternoon Club

Our first Friday afternoon craft and knitting club at Keynsham Royal British Legion got off to a great start. We had 32 ladies came along, all keen to start knitting and crafting again. It was lovely to see familiar faces and meet new members – some had come from as far afield as Kingswood and Bath. The first session was an initial introduction to our aims and what we would like to achieve this year for our knitted community art installation. A number of our ladies had already made a start on their knitting projects and brought along a selection of items. We had Barbara with her knitted Innocent Smoothie hats in support of Age UK, Mary and Celia brought along samples of their knitted and crochet flowers, while Jill and Pam brought along the dog coats that they are knitting for a local dog charity. Two of our newest members are now going to exchange knitting and crochet skills with each other, which for a first session is a really positive outcome and is just what our club is all about – meeting new people, socialising and catching up with old friends. Don’t forget the club is held on the third Friday of the month, so our next session is on Friday, March 15, from 3pm to 5pm, although this time it will take place upstairs (a lift is available). Do come along, patterns and wool will be available, or why not bring your own knitting or craft projects to share with our members. It’s great to see other people’s skills and creations. Geri, our British Legion hostess, will there to meet you and tea and coffee is available to purchase. If you have any unused balls of wool we can use, either bring them along to the club or they can be dropped off at Keynsham

Our judges will also be looking out for any special features within the entries and taking these into account for some special category awards. These will include: l New for 2019 – ‘Gardening in a changing climate’ and could include strategies such as raingardens, permeable paving and planting a hedgerow or hedge in place of a fence, as well as collection and storage of rainwater. l New for 2019 – ‘Gardening for wildlife and conservation’ will look at the diversity of plant species’ origin (native and non-native) appropriate to the setting and range of pollinator-friendly plants. Keynsham in Bloom Garden Competition

We have reviewed our garden competition categories for this year and have taken out some and replaced them with more current themes to reflect the way in which we are now all gardening. Many of us now want direct access to fruit and veg and there has been an increase in people growing their own. We saw some stunning vegetable displays last year, which is why we have introduced a vegetable/kitchen garden category. We would also like to encourage entries from residents who do

not have access to a garden, so our containers, tubs and hanging baskets category would lend itself to those with balconies. It would be lovely to see entries from our more recent housing developments, The Meadows, Bilbie Green and Somerdale, too. Our categories for this year’s competition are: l New for 2019 – Containers and hanging baskets only (can include window boxes) l New for 2019 – Vegetable/ kitchen garden l Front Garden l Rear Garden l Community (including residential homes) l Young people’s entry l Schools/nurseries

Umbrellas will be the theme for our trail this year, which will be an opportunity for you to get creative with planting up your old umbrellas. Alternatively, you may just want to decorate an umbrella with a floral theme. Your entry can be just one umbrella or a display of umbrellas. Trail entry form leaflets will be available from Keynsham Town Council offices in April. We hope that this year’s theme will prove to be as popular as the floral bike and scarecrow trails and hope to see as many entries as possible.

Orchid Talk

If you are a fan of orchids then we hope our forthcoming talk at The Space on April 2 will be of interest to you. We will be hosting a talk on orchids by local grower and exhibitor of orchids Kelvin Bush. The event will start at 7pm and tickets will be available to purchase at £5 from the town council offices. All proceeds will go towards our community projects. Depending on the success of this event, we are hoping to organise more horticultural and floral talks and possibly some garden show trips throughout the year.

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

An occasion obviously worth watching in 1930 was the delivery of a new MG cylinder to the Keynsham Paper Mill, which is currently being redeveloped as a transport depot. The cylinder was used to reduce the moisture content of the pulp as part of the papermaking process. Like many industrial premises, the paper mill had its own railway sidings: these were removed in the late 1960s. Immediately behind the line of spectators on the skyline was the main railway line, so either it was not a busy time or a blind eye was turned to walking on the tracks!

Group celebrates ten years of reading for better health

A group of Keynsham booklovers is celebrating 10 years of reading together to promote better health. The Better with a Book group has been meeting in Keynsham Library for the past decade – when it was opposite the leisure centre and in its new home – to discuss novels and hear poetry with the aim of helping people improve their mental health. The group is led by the charity Read Around Bath and originally was made up of people referred by a Keynsham GP, who felt reading in a group and talking about books would help some of his patients dealing with a wide range of issues, including bereavement, depression and pain. A spokesperson from Read Around Bath, which is also celebrating its tenth anniversary,

said: “The idea is based on research that reading is good for mental health. The Reading Agency says, ‘Reading has much to contribute to the support of individuals and community, well-being, development and learning. Reading is empowering. It supports mental balance, self-esteem and combats social isolation.’ “It is a small group of avid readers who have ongoing issues of their own but put them to one side to discuss their latest reads.” The group focuses on one book every six weeks, as well as enjoying poetry and other contributions from members, which can be read aloud at the sessions. They are currently reading a novel by Sally Vickers and have read a wide range of work by authors including Kate Atkinson,

Kazuo Ishiguro, Amy Tan and Pat Barker. The spokesperson added: “The books are read independently and then ideas shared in the group. It can be a lively group and whatever issues are going on in outside lives, people tend to leave with a smile on their face and some book recommendations to enjoy.” Read Around Bath, with support from Bath Library, supplies books and runs outreach groups to read with Julian House night shelter clients, Genesis Trust clients and residents at a number of Bath care homes. The charity’s patron is journalist, author and broadcaster Bel Mooney. To find out more, visit www.readaroundbath.org.uk or email info@readaroundbath. org.uk

The talk will be given by the chairman of Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, Richard Dyson, who said: “Keynsham has a rich and fascinating past; from the glories of our long-lost abbey to the ceaseless roar of the waterwheels that powered our industry, there is so much variety to the story of our town.” Martin Burton, from Community at 67, added: “We are so pleased that Richard is able to give this talk – he will take the audience on a journey through Keynsham’s history. The evening will appeal to those who have always lived in the town to anyone who has just moved to Keynsham.”

Sadness at closure of gardeners’ group A club that has been meeting in Keynsham for more than 80 years to celebrate members’ shared love of gardening has closed. Keynsham and Saltford Gardeners’ Association was founded in 1934 and has continued to meet regularly, most recently at the Fear Hall in Keynsham High Street once a month, to hear speakers as well as go on trips to gardens or garden centres. But falling membership means the association has decided to close, a decision taken with “sadness and regret” after such a long history, said Betty Weeks. As well as regular meetings, the association also used to hold two gardening shows a year with members competing for the judges’ votes in a range of

Betty Weeks being presented with one of the cups categories. Now the association is hoping to return any cups or prizes donated by local families in memory of former members. Anyone who wishes to have the items returned to their family is asked to contact Betty on 0117 932 4045 or Ted Hewer on 0117 932 4568 by April 30.

LETTERS Waste collections a source of litter

I have read with great interest that B&NES are to employ a private firm to provide “litter wardens” who have the power to issue a penalty or fine for dropping litter by members of the public. May I suggest to the company that they can maximise their profits overnight if they follow the recycling vehicles, which cannot be bothered to pick up the various items that I have personally seen dropped by the operatives when emptying the recycling bins. It is absurd and incongruous that B&NES Council have for some time turned a blind eye to their own staff who have scattered litter over the pavements and streets while carrying out a task of recycling litter, which is paid for by the residents who pay their council tax every year – and now they employ a company to fine

We must axe plastic, not just recycle it One of the biggest dangers to both mankind and wildlife on our planet is our love of plastic. The Eco Group at Keynsham Methodist Church has been campaigning for four years to reduce plastic in society, particularly single-use plastic. We are therefore delighted that our town council has set an objective of Keynsham becoming a single-use-plastic-free town. This will not be easy to achieve but with the goodwill of individuals and businesses we can reduce our consumption. We recently approached the professional sports clubs in our area and the responses were very encouraging. Bristol Rovers last year became the first of the 92 league clubs in England to be plastic-free. Bath Rugby switched to £1 deposit reusable cups in 2015 taking since then three quarters of a million cups out of landfill. At Taunton, Somerset Cricket Club introduced eco cups in 2017 and banned polystyrene from its food outlets. At Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City and Bristol Rugby, they have committed to eliminate single-use plastic at both sporting and corporate events and they fully support Bristol’s vision of becoming a green city. Unfortunately no reply has been received from Gloucester Cricket Club, although a reminder has been sent. Whenever we make initial contact we always try to go to the top using the website www.ceoemail. com which provides email addresses for the majority of organisations in the public and private sector. This enabled us, for example, to contact the CEO at Tesco, who referred us to the packaging technical manager with whom we started corresponding. I would suggest that supermarkets are the largest source of single-use plastic in Keynsham and encouraging them to support the town council initiative will be challenging. The Tesco store did last year start to pack its mushrooms in cardboard containers but that did not last for long and is now using plastic again. Our group is determined to continue challenging where other products could be used instead of plastic. Folk say that we are now

Mike Quick sent us this snowy Keynsham scene above, while Mike Trotman captured Freezing Hill living up to its name, below

recycling more plastic but that is used to simply produce more plastic. Our aim must be plastic reduction not just recycling. Mike Barrow Chair of Eco Group at Keynsham Methodist Church

Neighbours lend helping hand to tackle A Keynsham widower who felt isolated after losing his wife has thrown himself back into community life – with the help of a good neighbour! Roger Clark has lived in the town for more than 50 years but a busy working life travelling all over the country with Imperial Tobacco and raising a family meant he had little time to develop social links outside his home. After the death of his wife, Roger said he was left feeling very lonely and wanted “to find some way out of my situation”. That’s when he met Jos Dennis, a new volunteer with a project called ACE Neighbours, which is run by Bristol-based St Monica Trust to tackle isolation in older people. Recognising that joining new activities and meeting new people alone can be daunting, the project partners volunteers with older people so they can try new activities together until their confidence grows.

Roger had also taken up the clarinet at home and jumped at the opportunity to join a music project in Compton Dando, while musicians in a local orchestra have encouraged him to join them every month after he visited with his old washboard. With Jos’s encouragement he has also returned to Keynsham Photographic Society’s weekly meetings – and has become a volunteer himself, working at a community centre cookery club each week and applying to

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

A winter walk with some super views

A

nother good turnout of more than 40 walkers met at the Druid’s Arms in Stanton Drew for the five-mile walk to Norton Hawkfield and Norton Malreward. Some of us had travelled there in the Keynsham Dial-a-Ride minibus, for which we thank them. Because of the numbers, some car owners offered lifts to others who required transport. It was superb winter walking weather. The promise of muddy conditions, which were experienced on the recce on the previous Wednesday, did not fully materialize. Fortunately the really hilly section came at the start of the walk, so we were able to enjoy the rest of the walk with relative ease. There were super views from several vantage points on the walk, including the stunning Pensford viaduct. Views were not the only aspect to be appreciated as we encountered a variety of flora

Enjoying a welcome stop at the The Druid’s Arms after the walk and fauna, including some early skylarks and pairs of buzzards circling close by. We got back to The Druid’s Arms in good time, where most of us enjoyed the hospitality of the tavern while others headed back to Keynsham, all having enjoyed a very pleasant Sunday morning walk. It was a reluctant group of satiated walkers who boarded the minibus for the trip back.

n BACK TO NATURE

March, 2019

Jo shares tales from adventurous ‘end-to-end’ trek with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group Keynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust shared a memorable journey on foot down the length of the UK without leaving their seats, writes chairman Dave Sage. The Friday evening talk in February was given by Joanna Taylor, former English teacher, soon-to-be fully qualified plumber, a narrowboat resident, and an all-round engaging, amusing and inspiring character! Her talk

was entitled “Walking from John O’Groats to Land’s End….slowly!” and in it she described the highs, lows, laughs, tears, thrills and spills of her extraordinary two-and-ahalf-month journey in the summer and autumn of 2017, as well as her unusual encounters with wildlife. Setting out with a 20kg rucksack on her back and 85 sections of Ordnance Survey maps, Jo had no fixed itinerary but opted to make good use of the “right to roam” law in Scotland, where travellers are free to camp where they like (within reason!). The landscape is remote and windswept, with a rugged beauty, particularly walking down the “Strath”, a flat, shallow-sided, boggy valley and full of very important

Joanna Taylor reaches Land’s End after walking more than 1,200 miles from John O’Groats wildlife habitats. Impossible to avoid were the voracious midges; a constant nuisance on some days, ready to brave any insect repellent and bite any exposed flesh; a particularly harrowing experience when having to pay a call of nature in the wild! However, Jo was thrilled with her first ever encounter with a snake – an adder – and when she reached the village of Golspie on Loch Fleet, Jo had another wildlife “first” – harbour seals at close range.

She continued down the Great Glen Way, a breath-taking longdistance footpath running right across Scotland from north east to south west, reaching Fort William and waking up with a view of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak; truly a highlight of the walk. She continued south along the West Highland Way, then the Clyde Way before reaching the border counties, which she found particularly beautiful and where

n BACK TO NATURE she saw a short-eared owl. A few days later she reached the Cumbria Way, which she was looking forward to, but which turned out to be the most difficult leg of the entire walk. Not every night was spent in her tent; for example, in Cumbria she spent a night in Skiddaw youth hostel, reputedly the highest in the world. Cumbria soon became Lancashire, following canals from Lancaster to Preston and beyond. Eventually she reached Shropshire, her family home, where she enjoyed a brief break before heading on south along the beautiful (but unnavigable by boat) Shropshire Union Canal, then along Offa’s Dyke. Here she witnessed and videoed a crazy stoat, leaping and looping in the air; apparently a behaviour which can mesmerise potential prey. Hay-on-Wye heralded scenic walking across the Brecon Beacons, her Welsh leg completed upon reaching Chepstow. From here she walked across the old Severn Bridge, then under the second crossing, on her way to Bristol. By September 21 (the Equinox) she had crossed the Mendips,

descending via Ebbor Gorge and Wookey Hole, before crossing the Somerset Levels to Taunton, then finding and following the East Deane Way. Jo was expecting Devon to be straightforward, but she found it very hilly compared with the previous few weeks. Dartmoor was challenging but completed without mishap and, after Tavistock, she arrived at her final county – Cornwall. Here she passed Bodmin and crossed north to Padstow, before picking up the South West Coast Path, which she described as arguably the most beautiful stretch of the walk, even if the cliff ascents and descents seemed

endless. She saw plenty of wildlife along the way, including seabirds and a number of slow-worms, which are legless lizards rather than snakes, because they have eyelids, so are able to blink, and have ear openings. The last few days sped past as Jo reached Zennor, then St Ives, then Cape Cornwall and finally... Land’s End! Not surprisingly she received a tumultuous welcome from family and friends, and the obligatory champagne was opened! A remarkable achievement from a remarkable young lady. More than 1,200 miles covered in around 75 days, averaging 16 miles per day. I would hardly call

it “slowly”! Among the numerous questions asked by the audience after the talk was the inevitable “what next?” The answer was what is described as “Britain’s toughest trail”… Cape Wrath, which traverses 200 miles of Scotland's wildest country. Jo is clearly not shy of a challenge and we send her our congratulations, our thanks for a most enjoyable evening and our best wishes on completing her next expedition. We will certainly be inviting her back to hear all about it! Our next talk in 2019 is on Friday, March 8, at the Baptist Hall in the High Street, starting at 7.30pm. Peter Cranswick, head of species recovery at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, will be speaking on “The Amazing Resurrection of the Madagascar Pochard”, a truly remarkable conservation story. There will be refreshments on sale, as well as the usual great range of second-hand books, gifts, cards, and bird food. The evening is also a good time to sign up for any or all of our summer field trips, organised by Liz Wintle.

Dementia-friendly films welcomed A Keynsham group working to support those living with dementia in the area has welcomed the launch of dementia-friendly screenings at a local cinema. The screenings at Little Theatre Cinema in Bath will involve the lights being left on at a low level, no adverts and viewers are welcome to move around and take a break if needed. The Keynsham and Saltford Dementia Action Alliance has welcomed the move, saying it shows a “positive social and community approach” that it hopes other businesses might follow. Volunteers needed to carry out checks at custody unit People in Keynsham and Saltford are being urged to take on a voluntary role with a difference and help check on the welfare of those who are being held in custody. Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens has launched an appeal for independent custody visitor (ICV) volunteers to make unannounced visits at Keynsham Custody Unit to ensure detainee rights are being observed. Any issues found by the visitors, who attend in pairs, are raised with the officer in charge of the unit and a report is sent to the PCC’s office for review and any follow-up action. Ms Mountstevens said: “This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for an exciting and rewarding local volunteering role in and around Keynsham. We want to ensure the policing

service is open and accountable for the people it serves. “By gaining independent insight into police custody and reporting findings, we can ensure policing is transparent and that local people have confidence in their police service. Do something different and become an independent custody visiting volunteer.” Volunteers, who must be 18 or above, make one visit a month and attend four meetings a year. Volunteers management and

policy officer Kathryn Palmer added: “Training will be provided to new ICVs as well as an introduction to the panel coordinator, custody inspector and other ICV members, including updates at quarterly panel meetings. Part of the initial training includes shadowing a more experienced ICV member and a tour of the custody unit by a custody officer.” If you are 18 and above, live or work in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area, have not had any direct involvement in the police or criminal justice system and could carry out the role of a custody visitor with an objective point of view and with equality in mind, then the team wants to hear from you. n NEWS Case study: Anita Dibble, ICV volunteer Why did you want to become an independent custody visiting volunteer (ICV)? I joined the ICV team approximately four and a half years ago. I wanted the experience of working in a law environment while taking a masters level qualification at university. I completed my qualification a few years ago but have felt committed and involved in the ICV scheme since. What is it like volunteering as an ICV? I have found custody to be a fast-paced, revolving door. It’s a place of learning, adapting and adjusting to improve the service. Collaboration and listening to custody staff is just as important as listening to the detainee because, with excellent communication, issues can be resolved much easier and better with understanding on both sides. What have you learnt through volunteering? Being an ICV has given me a sense of meaning even though that may often be felt only in a small way. However, sometimes when all those small things come together I have seen it can and does make a big difference. I

noticed this has been achieved by every ICV’s participation throughout the organisation, which demonstrates the power of teamwork. Doing this voluntary work has taught me a lot about the complexities of a law environment and crime in the public. I have found it teaches you various skills such as listening, empathy, confidentiality, organisational, teamwork, how drug and alcohol addiction and mental health is often linked to crime and how other care professionals collaborate with the police to name just a few. How does being an ICV make a difference? ICV can make a massive difference and there are many skills to obtain. It truly has been a fulfilling interesting, enlightening and valuable learning experience for me. It is also a lovely experience to see how other ICV members participate and really care about what they do. There is nothing better than a group of wellmeaning individuals looking to improve things in a supportive, caring way and all done in their own time. Now that is something to be proud of, I think.

Mary Shaw with one of her paintings

Watercolour artist to share tips at art group by Ros Anstey Another artist will be giving keen painters an insight into the craft when he visits Compton Dando Art Group this month. George Boyter will be painting a watercolour landscape when he gives a demonstration at the village hall on Wednesday, March 27. Organiser Sonia Priest said: “George, who hails from Scotland, is a professional artist, specialising in painting watercolour landscapes including figures and buildings. He studied drawing in

Dundee, won the ‘A Brush with Fame’ Portrait Painting Challenge 2017 and was also winner of The Public’s Choice at Bucks Art Society Spring Exhibition 2018.” It will be the art group’s third demo this year, having welcomed Mary Shaw last month, who brought along three canvases and created a painting of a Spanish lady in front of the group. Doors at the demo open at 9.45am for a 10am start and the entrance fee for visitors is £4. Call Mrs Priest on 01761 490551.

Residents at Kingfisher Lodge care home in Saltford celebrated Valentine’s Day by inviting partners and families for a three-course meal and some glasses of fizz. After dinner, the residents shared their thoughts on love and what makes a good marriage - with resident Dorothy saying: “It was wonderful to see everyone go to so much effort to get involved with the day’s festivities. I really enjoyed the meal and especially when we spoke about ‘what makes a good marriage’ some of the answers were really funny.”

The Private Patient by PD James This book is the last in the detective series starring Adam Dalgliesh and is classic PD James. Prickly and cold investigative journalist Rhoda Gradwyn books herself into the exclusive private clinic of Mr Chandler-Powell in Dorset for the removal of a long-standing facial scar. The grounds of the clinic are beautiful and peaceful and she hopes for a successful and restorative stay. She was never to leave Cheverell Manor alive. Adam Dalgliesh and his team are called in to investigate and later a second murder occurs. So begins a complicated inquiry which raises more problems than just guilt and innocence. As mentioned, this is a classic PD James story. The author has great characters and a story that twists and turns at every opportunity. An intriguing “murder at the manor” story that I enjoyed reading.

Adult Non-Fiction

The Hidden Life Of Trees: How They Feel, How They Communicate – Discoveries from a Secret World by Peter Wohlleben This book seems to be a well-kept secret that readers borrow from the library and then spread the word to friends who might be interested. Peter Wohlleben is a German

forester who took on the challenge of finding and sharing all the latest scientific discoveries about trees. He explains to us as if the trees were human, allowing us to understand how amazing they are. Every aspect of the trees’ lives are in chapters covering the subjects of childhood, mothering, sexuality… I’m going to give you an insight into the sort of information this lovely book might give to you. Did you know there is a forest in America where a single tree has been identified as the mother of the 40,000 trees that surround it? Did you know a walk in an oak forest could lower your blood pressure and helps you in old age? Did you know some trees are male and female and the distinction is in their shade of green, which will attract bees to the male first before flying to the female tree? I loved it, and will definitely look differently at trees next time I go for a walk. Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant How to Grow – A Guide for Gardeners Who Can’t Garden Yet by Hollie Newton As mentioned in the title, this is a book for would-be gardeners who cannot garden yet. This is a delightful, well set-out guide to gardening. It has a very modern

feel to it and it is very easy to look things up. It begins with a chapter on garden design and soil and the author even describes what seeds and vegetables can be grown on window sills and in containers. I particularly like her small chapters on potential disasters, which as any gardener knows can occur quite a lot. There are lovely chapters on fruits and vegetables to grow with recipes that can be used when your produce is ready. There is a section on edible flowers as well as a final chapter on bee-loving flowers and spring seeds. A brilliant companion for any new gardener.

Children’s Fiction

The Maskmaker’s Daughter by Holly Webb From the eversuccessful pen of Holly Webb comes the story of Colette. She lives with her mother in Venice, making gorgeous dresses for the wealthy women of the city. Her embroidery skills are like no one else’s – some say they are magical! Colette never knew her father but soon discovers that he is

a famous mask-maker and a powerful magician and he has been asked to make a mask that can bend people’s will. This leads him into danger and sets Colette on a journey to save him with a trusty companion – Max, a talking alley cat! As always with Holly Webb this is a magical tale! Biggles Defends The Desert by Captain WE Johns Even though the Biggles books were written nearly 70 years ago, the adventures are still great fun. Flying Ace Squadron Leader James Bigglesworth, or more commonly known as Biggles, is defending a vital air route across Africa from a secret oasis base. Biggles and his team are at the mercy of the hot, dry desert as well as the wily German enemy headed up by their flying ace Von Zoyton. Flying across the desert, embarking on dog fights in the sky – this is a swashbuckling adventure for all ages!

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Can we put brakes on CO₂ emissions? Transition Keynsham’s Tony Mitchell talks all things car economy

D

id you know that 25 per cent of CO₂ emissions are caused by our vehicles, with growing consequences including for children's health and in exacerbating climate change? What can we do to mitigate it? Joining a car-sharing scheme can help. Certainly, minimising use must be a priority. I normally walk into Keynsham from the top of Wellsway and cycle to Saltford. There are good bus services to Bath and Bristol and I catch the train to London and Oxford. Not owning a car may become a serious consideration. Find out the manufacturer's emissions and fuel consumption figures for your car. If the former exceeds 100g/km and the latter is not less than 50 combined

miles per gallon, that is not good enough. Avoid diesel. The more powerful the car you own, the more pollution you are causing. You can check your true fuel consumption (and your driving) by recording your mileage and fuel purchases for six months, then dividing the former by the latter. Your driving technique can make a big contribution; safety and the environment make rallystyle driving unacceptable on our public roads. Emphases must include smooth acceleration, good anticipation, eggshell braking and keeping well away from the car in

front. Most cars minimise their fuel use at around 56mph to 60mph. Above that, consumption and costs quicken. Research has shown that in 2000, if speed limits had been rigorously observed, 12 million tonnes of CO₂ would have been saved; in 2007 a 60mph speed limit would have reduced emissions by 30 per cent. Avoid running the engine when significantly held up or to “warm up”. Everyone, especially those who think they are good drivers, should take an advanced driving test. A well-maintained car is very important. Incorrect tyre pressure creates pollution. Keep your tank half-full and minimise the use of air conditioning. Doing all this will make you a safer driver, save money and reduce pollution and carbon emissions, but it won’t provide the ultimate solution. We must accelerate our shift to a zero-carbon economy with electric cars, renewable energy and carbon-zero farming. We must stop poisoning our only home before it is too late.

Sign up for free clean air zone roadshow Drivers of commercial vehicles are being invited to find out more about how the “clean air zone” (CAZ) proposed for Bath city centre will affect them. Motor Transport Magazine and Bath and North East Somerset Council are holding a free event at Bath Racecourse on Wednesday, March 6, at 8.30am. The proposed charges are £9 for higher emission, noncompliant cars, taxis and LGVs/ vans and £100 for higher emission, non-compliant buses, coaches and HGVs. To register for the event, visit https://motortransport.co.uk/ clean-air-zone-roadshow-bath/ The council cabinet is due to consider a new report on the zone on March 5, which has identified a new option that would exempt car drivers from being charged and would see traffic flow into Gay Street, which exceeds NO₂ thresholds, reduced. For more on the CAZ proposal, visit www.bathnes.gov. uk/breathe

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Sarah Seymour, children’s, family and youth worker at Keynsham Methodist Church

M

y mum’s friend had a lot to cope with. She always used to say “when you reach the end of your tether, tie a knot in it.” I think that sometimes with all the pressures that fall on us today, a lot can be learnt from this. Rather than let everything spiral out of control and “unravel,” we can make the decision not to give up. To keep going, to tie a knot in the end of your tether and begin an upwards climb back to the top. It won’t be easy, and sometimes we might (and probably will!) slip back down; but that’s when our support networks around us can help. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is ask for help, but I have learnt in our town that there are so many different groups and organisations

keynshamvoice n NEWS

out there who can support us in so many ways. But for me as a Christian, God has everything to do with this too. Ultimately, he is in control of my life and so I know I am not dealing with things alone. God is always there, waiting, listening, whenever we need Him. He will work through those around you, serve you in ways you didn’t think were possible and bring you a sense of peace beyond all understanding if we let Him. Others may find a source of comfort in other things, maybe meditation, walking, exercise, talking – God isn’t always obvious in the ways He works! So I would like to encourage you to reach out to others around you – you don’t know who might be at the end of their tether! If you are the one struggling at the end of your tether, reach out to others around you – they might be able to help. And remember that God is always there for everyone at any time.

Crafters’ sessions raise £60 for village fund by Ros Anstey Craft workshops held in Compton Dando during the winter have raised £60 for the village’s community association. The sessions are organised by Harriette Dottridge at the village hall to give craft enthusiasts the chance to work on their own projects or try a new craft while enjoying the company of other like-minded people. The latest workshop took place in February and was well

attended, with people trying their hand at weaving on looms – from Ikea and on a rigid heddle loom – as well as felting, card-making, and tapestry embroidering. Soup was served for lunch and one member also brought along homemade cakes. The craft days are expected to resume in November and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Mrs Dottridge at hdottridge@hotmail.com or call her on 01761 490445.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

T

Before the Romans came... A replica round house at Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire; below, the New Room in Broadmead, Bristol

2,000 years later nothing remains, except for traces of the post-holes where the ground has not been disturbed. If later settlements are in the same place, nothing will survive. Traces of post-holes and stake-holes have been found at Somerdale but not enough to draw firm conclusions, and a few Iron Age artefacts have been recovered in the area. A few years ago, some evidence of round house postholes was found at Saltford Golf Club but, again, not quite enough to be certain. So far then, there is no definite proof of Iron Age settlements in Keynsham or Saltford, although we know there were villages at Camerton and at Heriots Bridge near Chew Lake, as well as a significant hill-fort at Stantonbury Hill near Burnett. The Avon valley provided good land for both cropgrowing and pasture so it would

he presence of the Romans in Keynsham was significant and is well-known through the outstanding mosaics now displayed in the library and the remains of the Somerdale villa now sited near the entrance to the Somerdale development. But the period before the Roman invasion in 43 AD is less clear, with very little hard evidence. Who lived here and how did they live? We label the period from 800 BC to the Roman conquest as the “Iron Age”. During this time England was under the control of various native tribes, each with its own territory. Keynsham and the Avon valley was near the southern end of the lands of the Dobunni, which extended down to around Glastonbury and north to include Gloucestershire and possibly part of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Cirencester was the Dobunni capital, which is why it later became a major Roman centre. Over almost 1,000 years, Iron Age society took major steps towards the modern world. The use of iron for plough shares and tools made life more efficient; increased food production meant that not everyone had to work on the land, so specialist crafts and trades could develop. Coinage began to be used, first of all in the south-east then gradually further west: in 35 BC the Dobunni began minting their own coins. Most people lived in small farming communities in socalled round houses, similar to those shown in the modern reconstruction in the photograph. These dwellings were not small and often had an area of usable floor space similar to a modern semidetached house. They were always built of wood, daub and thatch, so

certainly have been farmed by the Dobunni, probably supporting a local population of several hundred – all we need is the proof!

March meeting – The Impact of Wesley in the Bristol Area The society’s next Monday evening meeting on Monday, March 18, is

about Methodism. Gary Best, a trustee of the New Room chapel and museum in Bristol, will be talking about the impact that John Wesley had locally. The talk starts at 7.30pm and visitors are welcome to join us at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, Keynsham.

Fourteen straight wins keep the Ks in table’s top two KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field

Despite the weather restricting Keynsham Town to just four league games so far in 2019, they continued their fine form by winning all four to make it 14 consecutive wins in the Toolstation Western League Division One. Cheddar and the

Ks are well clear at the top, so with just 12 games remaining for the Ks, it is looking like a tussle between the two of them for top spot. The club also won their second Team of the Month award for December, and their wonderful form made it hard for manager John Allen to choose his Players of the Month. However, skipper Harley Purnell (December) and Nathan Curnock (January) won the awards. John said: “It gave us great pleasure to announce Harley Purnell as December Player of the Month. If we thought November was hard, this month was worse! “It actually doesn’t feel quite right singling out one person,

We talk a lot about putting the team first, and that’s exactly what the players do. There are no individuals in our squad, just 19 men all pulling in the same direction. “We opted for Harley because we feel he epitomises what we are all about. His individual performances have been fantastic, as captain he leads by example, not a screamer or a finger-pointer but a leader in the way he plays, bringing quality on the ball and a work rate that rubs off on others. He is integral to how we play, his experience is invaluable and right now I believe is the best midfield player in the division.” Turning now to Nathan, John said: “It’s with great pleasure we award the January Player of the Month to Nathan Curnock. Again an extremely hard decision to make, but we feel Nathan’s consistency not only throughout January but throughout the previous months has been key to our great form. We feel Nathan has improved defensively this season, and is always a threat going forward with his decisive cutting runs from full back; he has assisted in many important goals and also popped up with some very important ones of his own! A special mention to all the players, however, as they all to a man have been fantastic, and as already stated it’s very difficult to single any one player out!” One piece of sad news among all the great things happening at Crown Fields was the death of a Ks legend, Lester Clements. Club

The Ks’ upcoming home league games at Crown Fields are as follows: Saturday, March 9 Warminster Town 3pm kick-off Saturday, March 30 Portishead Town 3pm kick-off trustee Martin Coles said: “It is with sadness that Keynsham Town FC announces the death of their former club president Mr Lester Clements who died on Saturday, February 9, aged 88. Lester was one of the club team management committee for many years between 1969 and the early 2000s. He joined the club from Welton Rovers FC in 1979 as club physio (trainer) and went on to put in over 30 years at the club, becoming club president. “From the club he then worked tirelessly for the Somerset FA as part of their management committee up until his demise. Many that knew and loved him will sadly miss this lovely man and for the great work he did to establish the club as a long-term member of the Western League.” n You can keep up with the club’s news on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC). Keep an eye out for an update on the Ks’ fortunes in the next issue of Keynshamvoice!

Two error-filled defeats put Keynsham Rugby in the mix for relegation spot

After the relative delight of the previous batch of results for Keynsham Rugby Club, the picture is far less bright this month as the first XV lost both games played and failed to score any bonus points to help their league total, writes our correspondent. At Bridgwater and Albion RFC, they chose to play against a very strong downfield wind in the first half and were quickly down three points from a penalty. A break through the middle by Jack Weston opened space for George Warren, who was just caught by a despairing cover tackle. From the ensuing play Keynsham were awarded a penalty and Sam Challenger met the challenge and levelled things at three all. An unconverted try from a catch/ drive lineout put the home side ahead again and when Keynsham were camped on the Bridgwater line they then saw a relieving kick go to within seven yards of their own line. Two catastrophic errors by the visitors saw two more tries rattled in, one of which was converted taking the score to 18-3. On the half-hour Weston left the field with a shoulder injury, replaced by Matt Withey. Keynsham had two successive kicks charged down in their in-goal area – the second led to a fourth try before the half was over. Ollie Conybere came on for Dan Moody at the start of the second half, with Davies moving to 15 and Challenger switching to centre; Ben Angell took over

hooking duties from Howlett at the same time. Keynsham spurned four great chances in the first 20 minutes and then gave away an easy short-range penalty to end the agony. Final score 26-3 with all the home side’s points coming from Keynsham errors. The second defeat was at Cullompton where again the team failed to live up to expectations. The home side took the lead with a converted try. Keynsham equalised when a slick move from broken play

saw Calum Fennell put into space – he made 15 metres and, when tackled, second row Rich Court was on hand to force his way over the white wash. Ollie Coneybere converted. The home side scored another converted try but, despite messing up one good opportunity, the local lads equalised through Lewis Bush, Coneybere adding the conversion. All square at half time and things can only get better? But no, they got worse! Errors compounded and the Black and Ambers fouled-up

three or four pushover-try opportunities in a ten-minute spell. Three long-range penalties by “Cully” completed the scoring, the last of which came at the final whistle and denied the Ks a losing bonus. These two results leave KRFC in the mix for the final relegation spot, so the rot needs to stop soon. Next games at the Crown Field for the first XV are March 2 v Devonport Services, March 9 v Coney Hill, March 23 v Thornbury and March 30 v Launceston.

Performance to be proud of as U18s face full strength of Syston in the National Cup Keynsham Rugby’s Under-18s team made a three-and-a-halfhour trip to Leicester where they played Syston in the last 32-round of the National Cup. They met a big physical side who play in the ACER league and are a feeder team for Leicester Tigers. Both sides opened attacking willy-nilly but Keynsham took the lead after a swift threequarters move, Kieran Gay getting the try and Matt Carr adding

the extras. The home side then scored twice to lead 12-7. The local boys struck back when Luke Rolfe skinned his wing opponent and scored in the corner. Matt’s great conversion effort struck the cross-bar but stayed out. Syston re-took the lead with a converted try. A deft off-load by Declan Harding to Joe Concannon gave the Keynsham boy his chance to narrow the gap, which was gratefully received, Matt’s

conversion just missing. Thus, it was 19-17 at half time. The turning point in the game came early in the second half. A Keynsham cross-kick bounced awkwardly for the defence, Luke Rolfe gathered it and sped towards the undefended line, only to be called back for off-side. A dubious decision to say the least. Disappointment was doubled as the opposition rattled in 19 unanswered points in short time

to take the game out of sight at 38-17. To their credit the Black and Ambers regrouped and pinned the home side into their own third of the pitch for long periods; they were rewarded by a second Concannon try, but Syston did get two more penalties. Many “what if” discussions after the match, but the boys did themselves and the club proud and, to be fair, Syston were highly complimentary of their performance.

Curry night gets club warmed up for the bowling year ahead In January 50 members of Keynsham Bowls Club gathered in the clubhouse to hear an illustrated presentation by member Clive Brain on the M Shed Museum at Bristol Docks, plus the Pyronaut fire boat that Clive skippers, writes our correspondent. There were many old pictures that prompted memories of the dockside as it was years ago, along with information about the other boats moored in the docks. We all then enjoyed a ploughman’s supper prepared by the social committee, which was then followed by a little-seen film of the cavalcade of boats that sailed under the bridges of the Thames as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Clive explained how the Pyronaut nearly did not make it, as it had to be transported by trailer along the M4 and,

due to the weight, flat tyres became an issue. Alternative arrangements were made and the boat took its place with many hundreds of others to sail past the Queen. In February the annual curry evening took place and 60 members were well fed on beef curry, naan bread, poppadums and mango chutney followed by fresh fruit salad and ice

cream. Cottage pie was available for those preferring the more traditional cuisine. A great evening was had, with the curry just hot enough to encourage good bar sales! A couple of days before compiling this, secretary David Hockney had despatched to members all of the bowling information for the new season. Summer is on its way!
