and safety measures at the Chandos Road/Station Road junction sooner rather than later. A temporary plastic barrier was installed several months ago at the top of Chandos Road to try to prevent vehicles turning into Somerdale driving straight across the top of Chandos Road – but residents say this has failed to solve the problem. Resident and Keynsham Labour branch secretary Dave Biddleston said: “You can see the

barrier has been knocked as cars go straight across the junction so it is entirely ineffective and confusing for drivers who don’t know the layout.” Katharine Holland, who has lived in the area for 29 years, added: “This far along in the development we were expecting it would be complete and safe. Petition to call for swift action near Somerdale site From Page 1 among the first things they were going to do – but they haven’t.” Taylor Wimpey has confirmed that it plans to close off Chandos Road and divert access for residents through the Somerdale development and that it would be contacting B&NES Highways team to assess the temporary measures at the junction again. A Bath and North East Somerset Council spokesperson added work on the junction was expected to begin this summer. The spokesperson said: “Planning approval has been granted for a signalised junction where Chandos and Priory Road will be closed in part to through traffic. Taylor Wimpey are planning to start work on this during summer 2017.” Residents are also calling for urgent action to provide a crossing from the Somerdale site to Keynsham Station across the 30mph Station Road – which B&NES says will also be installed this summer. Mrs Holland said her husband walks to and from the station every day and he has to play “Russian roulette” when crossing the busy road. Chandos Road resident Samantha Bell said: “I commute using the train and it is very unsafe to cross Station Road due

to the speed of the traffic coming around the bend outward-bound, plus having to look out for cars exiting the station car park. “There is also a safety issue trying to cross from Priory Road to Chandos Road or into Somerdale as commuters often use the top of the junction as a drop-off point and perform a U-turn across the junction, which is beyond dangerous.” Potholes are also further adding to motorists’ and pedestrians’ woes along Chandos Road and into the Somerdale estate on Claudius Road – where one hole had even left a TV cable exposed before it was filled in the day after Keynshamvoice visited. Another resident who has lived in the area for 25 years said as a motorbike rider she found the potholes dangerous and felt they also posed a risk to children on scooters and runners. She added: “It’s fantastic they are developing the site and I love the whole concept of Frys, who put people first, but I think existing residents are being given a rough deal.” B&NES’ Highways team is due to inspect the Chandos Road area, the council said, while Claudius Road remains the responsibility of Taylor Wimpey as work on the new housing estate, which will contain up to 700 homes, continues.

Katharine Holland and Keynsham Labour Group members Dave Biddleston, Keith Day, Tony Crouch and Keith Burchell at the junction of Chandos Road, Priory Road, Station Road and the Somerdale site The Keynsham Labour Group has now begun gathering signatures on a petition door to door calling for swift action on residents’ concerns, which will be

presented to Taylor Wimpey and B&NES Council. A Taylor Wimpey spokesperson said: “Health and safety is our top priority at

Taylor Wimpey, and when we were first informed of concerns about the Chandos Road/Station Road junction last November we immediately

contacted B&NES Highways to assess how safety there could be improved. “In order to reduce the speed of vehicles entering the junction, B&NES Highways proposed the temporary arrangement which is now in place until work is completed at the Somerdale site. Since this was implemented, no local residents have contacted us to express their concerns – however, we will contact the B&NES Highways team and ask them to look at the barrier again to assess if any modifications are required. “Since we have been working on site we have carried out various maintenance and repair works to Chandos Road as soon as any issues have arisen. The exposed Virgin Media duct will be covered today and the crossover from Chandos Road/ Claudius Road will be repaired early next week. “As part of our off-site improvement works, a signalised pedestrian crossing is planned to connect the development to Keynsham railway station.”

Marina appeal is dismissed by inspector

A government planning inspector has dismissed an appeal against Bath and North East Somerset Council’s decision to reject a 326-berth marina at Keynsham. Inspector Mark Dakeyne heard evidence from the developer’s agent Enzygo Ltd, the council and other parties during a two-day hearing in January, before releasing his decision last month. In his report he said the

CW Fitness

marina would represent inappropriate development of the green belt and would cause harm to the character and appearance of the area and its ecology. He also said he gave a certain weight to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians around the site and to the loss of 25 residential moorings. The full report is available in the planning section of B&NES Council’s website, reference PP-02994434.

One-way scheme is Traffic flow around the centre of town is undergoing a major change as work gets under way on banning two-way traffic from Keynsham High Street. Construction work began at the end of February on the scheme, which will test the impact of allowing only southbound traffic – from the Charlton Road junction to the Bath Hill junction – to travel along the main road. The trial layout is expected to come into effect in May with Ashton Way remaining open to two-way traffic. All vehicles, except buses, taxis and bicycles, will have to turn left out of the High Street at the Bath Hill junction instead of continuing into Temple Street. The project also includes a new southbound bus stop in the High Street, a cycle contraflow lane along the road to allow cyclists to go north, a light controlled crossing in Charlton Road and the removal of the Bath Hill roundabout.

Meanwhile work has also started on creating a new bus layby in Ashton Way, which is expected to take eight weeks from February 27 and will involve temporary traffic lights. Councillor Anthony Clarke (Conservative, Lansdown), Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The idea of trialling a one-way system on Keynsham High Street is something which has been discussed for many years and also gained a lot of support among residents during the consultation into the Keynsham Transport Strategy as a way of improving the pedestrian environment in the town centre. “The council’s Highways Design team has been working closely with ward councillors in Keynsham over the last couple of months to ensure that the proposed design for the trial will enable us to give the most accurate picture of traffic flows under the new arrangement. “I am pleased to say that the

Help! How can I rid my house of fleas?

T

o bring a flea problem under control, you must deal with both the fleas on the pet and the flea larvae and pupae that are in the environment. It is estimated that 95 per cent of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in your home environment, not on your pet. For each adult flea on your pet, there could be a minimum of 20 developing in the environment – usually in your carpets and furnishings. Once a flea infestation has been established, it can take weeks to clear. The first step will be to treat your pets with the appropriate veterinary treatments that are proven to be effective and safe. All pets in your home will need to be treated. Be sure to get advice from your veterinary surgeon, as some products can be toxic if given to the wrong pets. Wash and treat all bedding and use an insecticide spray (available at your surgery) that will kill the fleas and larvae living in your house. This could be a challenge if your pet has the run of the house – you will need to vacuum and spray everywhere. Include their beds, your beds, carpets, floors, furniture

etc. Also, don't forget to empty your vacuum cleaner or change the bag after vacuuming your house. A female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, so over an entire life span, that single flea can be responsible for creating more than 20,000 fleas. With modern living and mild winters, flea infestations can occur at any time of the year. It is much easier to prevent fleas than it is to combat an invasion. By giving your pets regular preventative treatment they, and your home, will be constantly protected. If you think you may have a problem with fleas, book in for a free appointment with one of our nurses who will be happy to help. Joining our Healthy Pet Club will help spread the cost of your pet’s routine healthcare and could save you up to £200 a year. The Healthy Pet Club is a monthly health plan that provides all the preventative treatments your pet should need, including annual vaccinations and parasite control, plus exclusive discounts and benefits. New flats and bigger The £20 million conversion of Keynsham’s Riverside building into flats and overhaul of the town’s leisure centre have been given the go-ahead. The scheme, which will see the 1970s office block in Temple Street turned into 98 flats as well as the extension of the leisure centre, was given the green light by Bath and North East Somerset Council planning officials in February. Work will be able to get under way on transforming the exterior of the five-storey office block, which will include cladding it in white render, setting its top floor back and creating roof terraces as well as adding balconies. A report to the council said the proposal would “reduce the bulk and perceived scale” of the building and would “modernise an otherwise tired and somewhat drab building”. Inside, the former office space will become 31 one-bed flats, 60

two-beds, six three-beds and one four-bed, while the shops on the ground floor will be retained. Residents’ parking for 73 cars will be provided in the lower floor of the Civic Centre – but a proposed extra 12 spaces on the site of the River Suite have been withdrawn because of concerns over visibility for drivers exiting onto Temple Street. B&NES Highways team has raised concerns over the number of parking spaces, saying it falls well short of the maximum 166 spaces required under policies set out in the area’s Local Plan. But council planning officers said the building’s position within walking distance of the town centre, railway station and other modes of public transport meant it was in a “highly sustainable location” and that there was “extensive” public parking locally. “It is considered unlikely that there is insufficient capacity

Resignation prompts call for new councillor A resignation has left a vacancy on Keynsham Town Council that needs to be filled – just as Bath and North East Somerset Council withdraws funding for town and parish by-elections. Keynsham North Ward councillor Zoe Wilkins stepped down last month meaning that either a by-election will be held if ten residents request one by Friday, March 10, or a new councillor will be chosen by present councilors, known as co-option. Candidates for co-option must be nominated by an existing councillor and town council chair Lisa O’Brien said she will sign applications from any residents who would like to put themselves forward. She said: “We welcome applications for co-option to fill the vacant role of town councillor from any resident in Keynsham. Our current protocol requires that these must be proposed by a serving town councillor. Therefore, I am happy to sign the nomination paper for anyone coming forward. “Application forms can be obtained from the town clerk, asking for details of your experience and what you feel you could bring to the role. After submis-

sion, you will be asked to present yourself to councillors for their consideration. We need members who can commit time and energy to the work of council." Concerns have been raised over the withdrawal of funding for by-elections – estimated to cost around £2,000. Discussing the vacancy at February’s town council meeting, Labour town councillor Dave Biddleston said: “I’m deeply concerned B&NES is not providing the money for by-elections, which significantly undermines the opportunity for democratic elections in this area.” Former town councillor David Brassington said in a letter to Keynshamvoice the change was “detrimental” to local democracy. “There will be a pressure on a parish or town council not to widely publicise any vacancy and hope that an election would not be called by ten local electors,” he added. Anyone who would like to find out more about the current town council vacancy can visit www.keynsham-tc.gov.uk or contact town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott on 0117 986 8683 or email townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk l Letters – Page 16

The RIverside office block in Temple Street will be clad in white, left; Keynsham Leisure Centre will be extended into the park, right within the town centre for the additional parked cars generated by this development,” the report adds. Meanwhile the refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre, expanding it into the former snooker centre and a new extension on the edge of the neighbouring park, was also approved. The plans include a new

learner swimming pool and fitness suite, new studio space, café and soft play area and the planning officers’ report concludes: “The proposed extension, providing a learners’ swimming pool, and associated works will provide a muchneeded community facility. The public benefits of this facility, which are significant, will outweigh the loss of and harm

to the adjacent park. In design terms the existing building will be significantly enhanced as will the conservation area.” The leisure centre proposal prompted more than 40 comments from the public, many of which objected to the proposal for mixed swimming pool changing facilities. B&NES’ property and project delivery director Derek Quilter

said the changing room layout was still being developed with comments being “taken on board” and added: “When the layouts are complete we will publish the final layouts prior to any work commencing.” In a presentation on the scheme last year, Mr Quilter said he hoped the whole scheme would be completed by the end of 2018.

Starting in March last year, the team organised a number of fundraising events, including a day at Bath Racecourse that raised £33,000 alone. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed towards smashing our target of £50,000.” The cash will now go towards research being carried out at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre into ITP, in which platelets are destroyed causing potentially lifethreatening bleeding, bruising and severe tiredness. Specialist care services for older people in Keynsham will be improved with a share of £700,000 of extra investment, Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced. Charlton House will provide general nursing care but will also focus on providing a higher level of residential care for people with complex needs but who do not require nursing. With around 130 care home beds lost across B&NES in the past year, the council says it is investing to create modern care services to meet the changing needs of the growing older population. Services at Cleeve Court, in Bath, and Combe Lea, in Midsomer Norton, will also be redesigned. All current residents’ places are unaffected. In a matter of hours my world was turned upside down and it makes you realise it can happen to anyone, yet so many people aren’t aware of the devastating impact ITP can have.” Dr Charlotte Bradbury, ITP research lead at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The treatment for patients with a new diagnosis of ITP has not changed for decades and is unsatisfactory as the medicines have lots of side effects and often don’t work. “It can take several months before the best treatment is found and the illness is controlled. In the meantime, patients feel very ill, have bleeding problems, drug side effects, frequent hospital visits

and usually can’t work or carry on with their normal lives. “The incredible amount raised by Dribuild will be essential to help us develop new blood tests that can predict the best early treatments for patients to help avoid side effects and, most importantly, make them better quicker.” Cressida Prout, corporate partnerships and community fundraising manager at Above & Beyond, added: “We are truly blown away by the dedication and commitment Dribuild has shown over the past 12 months to support Bristol city centre hospitals. “They have thrown themselves into fundraising from day one and the results are clear to see. We’re outgrowing town’s tired play areas, Claudia, 9, tells councillors

The play area Claudia wishes Keynsham children had

Keynsham’s parks need to grow up and offer play equipment for older children, councillors have been told by a nine-year-old resident who spoke at their last meeting. St John’s Primary School pupil Claudia Tucker wrote to Keynsham Town Council setting out her ideas for a new play area, which could be built anywhere councillors wanted, she said – as long as it was in the High Street. A drawing of the park – called Claudia’s Adventures – includes a pirate ship, a climbing wall, a café and a pool and would be aimed at children aged eight and over. Claudia’s mum Monica explained that while the Memorial Park’s play area was popular with younger children, including Claudia’s six-year-old sister Gabriella, it wasn’t suited to older children – and Claudia decided to try to do something about it. “I said why not write a letter to the council, never expecting her to do it, but then she wrote one and asked if we could post it. “The councillors invited us to come to the meeting and I was really pleased that they were taking notice and listening to young people – the equipment in the park is looking tired and is aimed at younger children.” Claudia said it was “very scary” talking to the councillors but said she thought their promise to visit schools and speak to children about what they would like in Keynsham was a good idea. A review of Keynsham’s play areas is under way, town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott said, including improvements to the Memorial Park site, while the issue of facilities for children was also being looked at as part of the town’s Neighbourhood Development Plan. “The town council is undertaking a review of all its play areas and recognises that some of the equipment is either outdated or not suitable for older children,” she said. “This is part of a wider review we are undertaking with B&NES and currently a proposal is being

Claudia Tucker, nine, has asked Keynsham Town Council for a play area for older children considered to refurbish Upper Memorial Park play area. The council wishes to ensure there is suitable space where all children, whatever their age, can enjoy playing and that the equipment supplied is not restricted to the younger age group. However, before we spend any money, we need to find out what the children want and that is why Claudia’s letter is so important to us. “So as part of the Neighbourhood Development Plan, we are looking to engage with children and young people of all ages to find out what they would like to see in Keynsham. Our Recreation Topic Group will be planning to visit all schools during the year so children and young people can tell us what they think.” There will be an NDP stall at the Festival of Nature in Keynsham Memorial Park on Sunday, June 18, representing all five topic groups where residents will be able to see what progress is being made and share their own opinions. ON THE BEAT

‘ with PC James Evans

I

n the last month we have seen more traffic problems in Keynsham with the road works in Bath Hill. This has been causing problems at peak times. In conjunction with this, I have noticed drivers contravening the temporary traffic signals. Although whizzing through on an amber or red light seems like nothing, in a location such as this it is possible for a pedestrian to be crossing the road when this occurs. The last thing a driver wants to be doing is explaining how they ran someone over while contravening the traffic signals. An amber light should be treated the same as a red light, not accelerating through it hoping it doesn’t go red.

The last thing a driver wants to be doing is explaining how they ran someone over while contravening the traffic signals

I am often puzzled when I stop drivers and challenge them about their driving standards. One of the measures I use is would you have done that in your driving test? More often than not the answer is no, and I find myself reminding them that this is the minimum driving standard that you should be looking to achieve and not the best you have ever driven. We will be looking at further problems when the roadworks start for the one-way system on Keynsham High Street. This will also cause delays as the work is completed and the pilot scheme goes live. Please be patient during this period and allow extra time to get from one side of Keynsham to the other. Sticking with the motoring theme, we had a nasty accident between two off-road bikes that

had illegally gained access to the wasteland between the Hicks Gate Roundabout and the bus lane that cuts the corner heading towards Bristol. This is an area we have a number of problems with and we have powers under the Police Reform Act to seize vehicles that are being used off the road. There are a number of legally-run events locally, where off-road bikes can be used. These events have a small cost to cover the insurance but it’s better than having your bike seized and possibly destroyed. This month I will be attending Wellsway School as I have been invited to deliver a talk to Year 8 and 9 pupils on the possession of controlled drugs, and the consequences of being found in possession of them. I am looking forward to this as it is an opportunity to interact with pupils

11

and gauge their knowledge of this subject. It’s important for the students to have a good level of understanding of the police’s role in these circumstances and the powers we have in relation to the Misuse of Drugs Act. This gives me a chance to give them a gentle reminder of the standards that we expected them to achieve and what happens when they fall below them. Over the last few months we have been visited by beggars on Keynsham High Street. I wonder how many people know that it is an offence to beg, and that it carries a power of arrest. I dealt with a female before Christmas, and then a male this week, both of whom displayed cards with stories of life-changing problems that were false. If you see someone begging in Keynsham, please phone 101 to report it. There are a number of ways we can deal with this and it is not always by prosecution. If needed we can use our partner agencies, which can offer support and shelter to them.

Lunch club offers ‘more than just a meal’ Volunteers behind a Keynsham lunch club who serve up “so much more than a meal”, according to its supporters, have been recognised for their work. Mandy’s Kitchen at Community @ 67 was launched when Mandy Oliver began offering taster sessions to encourage some of the centre’s older visitors to try new food. Three years later, the initiative is now a lunch club that serves up to 30 people every Friday at the Queens Road premises and Mandy, Trish Adams, Margaret Davies, Stan Hancock and Ted Smith have just been Highly Commended in the Volunteer Team of the Year category in this year’s Bath and North East Somerset Council Chairman’s Community Awards. The awards judges said the group had created “a warm, welcoming, fun, environment for the community to participate in”, with volunteers preparing

Fellow Community @ 67 volunteers Patricia Adams, Margaret Davies and Christina Smith were also nominated for Volunteer of the Year in recognition of their work. Congratulating all the volunteers, Adrian Inker, vice

chair of Community @ 67, said: “We are very proud of all our volunteers at Community @ 67. As a totally voluntary organisation we could not deliver such a range of services without their time and dedication. We were especially pleased that Mandy Oliver’s team of volunteers was recognised. The lunch club, which is for all the community, brings people

together for a meal every Friday. What Mandy manages to create each week is outstanding.” The awards, which celebrate individuals and organisations making a positive contribution to their communities, were presented by B&NES chairman Alan Hale in a ceremony at the Guildhall in Bath on February 9. Cllr Hale said: “I would like to congratulate all our winners, and indeed those nominated for an award. They all make a fantastic contribution to the local community and I hope their stories are an inspiration to others to make a difference.” The Chairman’s Community Awards are organised in partnership with the Volunteer Centre Bath and beyond; social housing provider Curo; the Student Community Partnership, involving the University of Bath and Bath Spa University students unions; and Sirona care & health.

Glitzy event raises £3,500 towards charity’s new home A glamourous dinner and dance has helped a Keynsham charity raise more than £3,500 towards securing a new home. Keynsham and District Mencap Society hosted a black-tie Winter Extravaganza charity dinner and auction at Saltford Golf Club in aid of its New Building Appeal, welcoming 130 guests to enjoy live jazz with Nicki Jefferis and a disco. An auction featured an impressive selection of lots donated by businesses, including a hot air balloon ride, 6 Nations Rugby tickets, an overnight stay at a hotel and more, while many local firms also donated raffle prizes. The charity supports more than 150 adults and children with learning disabilities, providing weekly social and sports clubs, one-off events, minibreaks and holidays, which are all currently based at different venues across Keynsham, Radstock and Bath. To meet growing demand, the

charity is hoping to open its own base. Lisa O’Brien, chair of Keynsham and District Mencap Society, said: “If we remain as we are this will become a logistical challenge, therefore to enable us to keep costs down and continue to enhance our provision it seems prudent that we obtain our own centre which can facilitate our desire for additional sessions for our members, our own hall space, office space and extra storage needs. “Not only do we want everything under one roof but we also want to expand even further and provide supplementary daytime activities alongside the evening and weekend pursuits. By achieving this goal we can make even more of a difference to our members’ lives.” To find out more about the appeal or donate, visit www. keynshammencap.org.uk or call fundraiser Amanda Leonard on 0117 986 5659.

Dementia team calls for hands-on help

Volunteers are needed to put plans for a memory café and singing therapy sessions to support residents with dementia into action. The newly launched Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance is now looking for people to help them make Keynsham and Saltford more dementia friendly by taking a hands-on role in activities. Chairman of the DAA Alan Hale said: “We are planning to start a memory cafe and are also hoping to set up a singing therapy group and have both in place before the summer. “However, to do that we need some willing hands-on volunteers at the venue to help those living with dementia as well as the carers when they come along. No qualifications are needed, just a warm heart and a willingness to help others.” Anyone wishing to volunteer or learn more about how they can get involved can contact the group on 0117 983 7923 or email

dementiafriendlykeynsham@ gmail.com. The group would also welcome contact from any business that might like to discuss sponsoring the DAA in Keynsham and Saltford.

Orchestra welcomes choirs for concert

The musicians of Keynsham Orchestra will be joined by two choirs this month to perform Brahms’ German Requiem. Chew Valley Choral Society and the Maesbury Singers will join the performance at St John’s Church in the High Street on Saturday, March 25, at 7.30pm. An orchestra spokesperson said: “Brahms chose not to use the words of the Requiem Mass, but selected his own texts from the bible, and composed some of the most beautiful music that he ever wrote. The concert also includes the very exciting Organ Concerto by Francis Poulenc.” Tickets are £10, £8.50 for concessions or free for under-16s. Tickets available from the church or on the door.

This rather battered photograph from the society’s archives dates from 1913. It shows a group of children who have obviously been standing for some time! They were waiting for the arrival in Keynsham of a march, explained by the sign in the background: Land’s End to London – the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. This organisation employed only peaceful tactics in its campaign to gain the vote for women, which was partially achieved in 1918, and extended to all women in 1928.

Springing into action with snowdrops by Ros Anstey Despite the cold weather, around 15 volunteers were coaxed into action to help plant 2,000 snowdrops around the newly installed lime tree avenue at St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando. The group were led by Parochial Church Council (PCC) member Steve Rendell, and their work should create an attractive

spectacle for many springs to come. One of the volunteers, Gary Pearce, said: “Last year the old rotten lime trees were replaced, and the action of the replanting of the trees required the snowdrops to be bulked up.” It was the end of an era for St Mary’s Church last April, when its attractive avenue of lime trees was declared dangerous and had to be cut down after 250 years.

ven in rural areas the scandal over diesel emissions cannot be ignored. It is estimated that air pollution primarily caused by nitrous oxides that are produced by diesel engines are leading to 40,000 premature deaths a year in the United Kingdom. These will not be in North East Somerset where we are fortunate to have clean air but in our cities. According to John Middleton, president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, “childhood lung development and asthma. . . heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and dementia” are all linked to nitrogen dioxide. Until recently the UK Government favoured diesel over petrol engines.

LETTERS

Perhaps millions of people across Europe will be less healthy in pursuit of a target which will not solve any problems. It is a tragedy that public health ran second to fashionable posturing

The policy was determined because of fears about carbon dioxide emissions and an agreement made across the European Union to reduce them. Petrol creates more carbon dioxide than diesel engines but carbon dioxide does not lead to serious health complaints; indeed it is perfectly safe as a background atmospheric gas for people to breath. To help the promotion of diesel the authorities, especially the EU ones, were complicit with the car manufacturers to pretend that diesel engines were safer than they are. The conditions for the tests were unrealistic and software was used, particularly by Volkswagen, to fiddle the figures. According to engineers it is possible to make diesel engines that are safe but

unfortunately that has not been what happened. Hence, more dangerous pollutants that shorten life were pumped out in the hope of achieving a theoretic carbon dioxide target that developing nations were not interested in so were merely absorbing the costly decreases we were making into their growth. These policies were designed as part of an EU green agenda and were precisely the wrong way to tackle any risks of climate change. Perhaps millions of people across Europe will be less healthy in pursuit of a target which will not solve any problems. It is a tragedy that public health ran second to fashionable posturing. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Enforce weight limit on the High Street

Further to the story in February’s issue of Keynshamvoice regarding the crossing outside Parsons in the High Street, did you know that the stretch of High Street from Bath Hill to Charlton Road is restricted to 7.5 tonnes maximum, except for buses and emergency services (fire engines). I have on many occasions been in Parsons having a cup of tea, only to see 44-tonne artics go by, 17-tonne tippers go by, council bin trucks (17 tonnes) go by, and tractors pulling trailers – all of which have no right to use that part of the High Street. This causes cars to move over, which in turn distracts drivers from what they are doing and in some cases to panic and overshoot the crossing, the result potentially being someone getting hit. March, 2017 council enforced this weight restriction I am sure this would help. It wouldn’t cure it but it would help. Perhaps B&NES should instruct its parking staff to write down the registration of the vehicles instead of concentrating their efforts on people who overstay their parking tickets. V Hewlett

Cheered by boys’ act of kindness

I wanted to say thank you and well done to two boys who helped an older lady who fell in Keynsham High Street on Friday, February 17, at around 9.40am, just outside FDC Solicitors. The lady in question stumbled on the pavement and the two chaps, maybe 11 or 12 years old, raced over on their scooters and helped the lady up while collecting her bags from the floor. I was driving past at the time, but I wanted to let them and their parents know how well they did and what a great example they set. I am often reading negative pieces about young people in the

press and I wanted to redress the balance somewhat. This was a lovely act of kindness that was incredibly cheering to witness. D Perrett

Lights would solve issue with crossing

I agree there should be controlled lights at the zebra crossing on Keynsham High Street. The problem here is caused by the volume of traffic – if the traffic is stopped both sides of the crossing, drivers coming from the roundabout down the High Street do not see pedestrians step onto the crossing between the stopped vehicles. Traffic lights would solve this problem. I have seen some near misses here myself – as stated, are they waiting for someone to be fatally injured here before action is taken? The campaigners have my full support. Mr D Woodham Burnett

transfer of the costs of parish (and town) councils’ by-elections from B&NES Council to the parish (and town) councils themselves. So what, you may think. Parish and town councils will be obliged to raise their own precepts (tax) to ensure that there is enough money in reserves to meet these potential costs, which can be thousands of pounds. There is no saving whatsoever to the B&NES Council taxpayer as the parish (and town) precept is collected with the council tax. This change is detrimental to local democracy. There will be a pressure on a parish or town council not to widely publicise any vacancy and hope that an election would not be called by 10 local electors. The vacancy would then be filled by co-option at no cost to the parish or town council. Equally, it might deter voters from calling for an election or indeed standing as a candidate if they knew that the costs of an election fall on their local parish or town council. In a small community, the pressures not to call for or stand in a

by-election could be considerable. Elections to fill vacancies on local councils need to be encouraged as they are the best way of engaging the public over local issues. They give the elected councillor confidence in having public support and avoid selfserving cliques on a council. There were only six parish or town by-elections in 2016 in the whole of the B&NES area, which hardly justifies any change. This Conservative B&NES Council decision has simply moved a budget line off the B&NES budget spreadsheet, transferred costs onto parish and town councils, and damaged local democracy in the process with no financial benefit for the council taxpayer. LETTERS From Page 17 Saltford is not a problem that we should be concerned with. This is because, according to his figures, the amount of traffic going through Saltford in 2015 over five days averaged 27,747 a day compared with 31,075 vehicles in 2002. This of course, as D Hounsell pointed out, is a 12 per cent fall in traffic from the peak period 31,075 in 2002. Congratulations all round should be the order of the day as, if these figures are correct, I’m sure that all local authorities throughout the country would be delighted to have found the magic bullet for reducing the amount of traffic on our roads. However, when one considers that there are plans to build thousands of extra houses in Keynsham, East Bristol, and Bath one has only to imagine the substantial increase in traffic and thus pollution on the A4 as a consequence. It may well be that the information on current

traffic flow will soon be out of date. A recent TV programme on the effects of air pollution and how it adversely affects the health and longevity of people explained very clearly the effect air pollution has on the general public. If you missed it, the programme is called Trust Me, I’m a Doctor and an online article www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/ articles/3mXHDs31VgMfhdlhD ngnBdN/should-i-worry-aboutair-pollution enlarges on the matter. I think people would be horrified to see how it is affecting the general health of people and how it can only get worse. I would like to appeal to anybody, especially mothers with young children, to protest to your local newspaper if you feel it is something you agree with. It may also help if you contact your local MP. I’m well aware how decisions on transport infrastructure are made but local opinion and lobbying can sometimes influence such decisions. I really do believe that it is time that the people of Saltford had their bypass. Alfred Ashton

Other political views are available

It is disappointing that Jacob Rees-Mogg, in the February issue of Keynshamvoice, saw fit to use the privilege of his column to promote his well known views on Brexit and his admiration for Theresa May. Keynshamvoice is a local magazine so it would be good if he were to share his insights into some of the more pressing local issues that affect us; bus service cuts, proposals for a Saltford orbital road, the green belt and the demand for new housing, and the ever-mounting pressure on the RUH accident and emergency department to name but a few. If Keynshamvoice letters pages are anything to go by these are of great concern to your readers. I believe it would be good to hear what our local MP thinks. Nevertheless I would like to question the prominence your magazine gives to the partisan views of just one man. If Keynshamvoice wishes to present an independent voice then it should be giving equal prominence to persons with alternative opinions and differing

March, 2017 political persuasions…….or perhaps a note could be added that, as with Mr Rees-Mogg’s views on Brexit, “other points of view are available from all reputable political parties”. H James EDITOR’S NOTE: Other points of view on both local and national issues are indeed available and will always find a home in our letters section. Keynshamvoice is independent and does not seek to promote the views of one political party over others. However, we feel it is important that the views of the area’s Member of Parliament – currently Jacob Rees-Mogg following May 2015’s general election – are given a regular platform while he/she holds the role of North East Somerset’s elected representative. This is not to promote one party or individual but rather to promote openness in local democracy.

Bargain hunters helped teenage fundraisers from Keynsham collect £250 for the Royal United Hospital’s children’s ward last month. Cousins Molly Hale and Leah Gould held a secondhand goods sale at St Francis Church Hall in Warwick Road after appealing for donations of clothes, books and toys. There was a steady stream of shoppers throughout the day and Molly said: “We were very

surprised at the amount of goods that were donated to us and we are most grateful to the people that came along and also to our friends and family who helped us on the day. It was a great day for a worthwhile cause.” With so many items donated for sale, there was still plenty left over at the end of the day so the cousins passed them on to the British Heart Foundation and Golden Oldies shops in the High Street to stock their shelves.

Students challenge world with creativity A young Keynsham artist’s thought-provoking comment on our over-reliance on technology has gone on public display. Sasha Hutchinson challenges society’s obsession with gadgets in her piece Junkie, which uses mixed media to capture what she describes as “the world’s unhealthy dependence on technology” and highlights how it has infiltrated our lives, becoming as necessary as our own organs. The piece formed part of an exhibition of work by creative arts students from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College. The show at Paintworks in Brislington included graphic prints, paintings, photos and textile designs all created by the 17- to 18-year-olds for their A-level projects. The exhibition, which

has become an annual event, was opened by Bristol-based contemporary landscape artist Anthony Garrett, who was impressed by the work on show and said it felt like a degree-level showcase. After a private view and opening ceremony, the exhibition was then on display to the public over the weekend. St Brendan’s principal Michael Jaffrain commented on the event: “I am incredibly proud of our creative arts students, who have worked so hard to explore new techniques, stretch themselves and challenge the world around them. “Their inquisitive and imaginative minds are hugely inspirational and I am excited to see where their creativity takes them in life.”

The one thing stopping the group taking on more young people is actually adults – even with more than 100 adult leaders they still need more for all sections, including Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. A spokesperson said: “With working hours for people often not standard it has proved a barrier to adults volunteering. In Keynsham Scouts we have

adapted our structure to provide more flexibility and would love to hear from anyone over the age of 18, both male and female, who might like to have some fun and volunteer.” Simply email scouts@1st keynshamscouts.org.uk to find out more. No previous Scouting experience required. Who knows – with your help this success story might run for another 100 years.

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

New season of competitions for budding gardeners and artists Remembering a dedicated volunteer as Keynsham in Bloom launches this year’s competitions for youngsters and calls on residents, businesses and groups to get growing for summer’s contest. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James tells us more.

K

eynsham in Bloom volunteers were saddened to hear of the sudden loss of one of our longest serving Bloom volunteers. Our very dear friend Gill Hellier passed away in January and will be greatly missed by us all. Gill was an inspiration to us and a dedicated Bloom volunteer who was involved in the initial conception of Keynsham in Bloom. One of Gill’s great pleasures was judging our children’s competitions and presenting the winners’ prizes. We would like to think Gill would have been particularly thrilled to see our entries in this year’s competition. We have approached Gill’s family and asked if we can dedicate a new Bloom award in memory of Gill, which will be presented at our awards ceremony in October. Coming up Keynsham in Bloom Committee members have organised a number

of activities and are on the lookout for budding young artists and gardeners. Children’s Colouring Competition In our first competition of the year, we will invite children from our local primary and junior schools to enter our annual children’s colouring competition. The combined entry form and colouring poster can be collected from the Town Council Office, 15-17 Temple Street. We will also be delivering entry forms to local schools. The closing date for entries is Friday, April 28. Children are being asked to colour in a seaside poster, pictured right. Prizes will be awarded at the annual Scout plant sale at their Ashton Way headquarters on Saturday, May 13, where Keynsham in Bloom volunteers will have a display stand. This will be a great opportunity for anyone wishing to get involved with our activities to come along and chat with our volunteers. Garden in a Container Competition Budding young landscape designers are being invited to take part in our Garden in a Container Growing Competition. We are encouraging children to have a go at creating their own mini garden in a seed tray or similar recycled container. Just take a photo of your finished garden and send it to Dawn Drury, Keynsham in Bloom Community Group, c/o 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham BS31 1HF.

Bloom where a category winner will be selected from the whole of the South West region and announced at the regional awards in October. However, each Keynsham category winner and runner-up will receive a prize from Keynsham in Bloom, which will be presented along with the winners’ and runner-up prizes from the Garden in a Container Competition at the September Keynsham Farmers’ Market.

n SPOTLIGHT ON SALTFORD

Village festival has plenty of traditions but isn’t afraid to try something new! Saltford Festival 2017 runs from Saturday, June 10, until Sunday, June 18, and returns with some new activities alongside the popular triedand-tested events. Saltford Community Association member Jill Williams gives us a preview of this summer’s community celebration. The nine-day Saltford Festival has become a village tradition and is now in its fourth incarnation. Included is a varied programme of song, dance, poetry, drama, humour, exhibitions, competitions, food and drink. New events have appeared this year and as always the aim is to include as many local contributors as possible. For this festival we are excited to welcome Admiral Kelly, a former resident of Saltford House! He will be found in uniform standing outside Saltford House, alongside the plaque to his memory, during the Old Village Day (June 11). He will be answering questions and talking about life in his time and his achievements. Another major addition will be Saltford Sports Club’s Super Saturday Afternoon on Saturday, June 10, from 1pm into the evening. We are promised, among other things, battle archery, volleyball, an exhibition of vintage scooters with music

The Farandole Dancers entertain at the 2015 Saltford Festival, above; below, the village crier and two festival helpers dressed for the occasion, which had a wartime theme and a screening of the England v Scotland football match! New to the festival will also be a Community Cinema screening of the classic film Singing in the Rain (June 13) and a Country & Western Afternoon Tea Dance on June 16. Tried-and-tested events are, of course, included. The festival would not survive without its quiz, the Country Market, the evening of jazz, the choir, Turn to Page 26

Our own John Isaacs will leave his audience spellbound after his Night of Magic and Mystery (June 14) and Saltford Drama Club will entertain with a Murder Mystery Evening (June 17). Many other local organisations and helpers are taking part to provide a challenging but entertaining week. MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has supported Saltford Festival since its birth in 2011. That first year he stoically faced the torrential rain, visiting all the attractions of the Old Village Day. He has agreed to join us again to visit the Street Market stalls in the High Street and enjoy the music, dance and teas in the ancient Manor

Space will not allow me to divulge any more information. I must, however, congratulate B&NES Council on the timely replacement of outdated footpath styles with sturdy gates, which will now allow the public to safely visit a paddock behind St Mary’s Church for the amazing festival dog show! The nine days will finish off with a wonderful finale at Saltford Golf Club on the afternoon and evening of Sunday, June 18. n SPOTLIGHT ON SALTFORD

‘New homes only way to fund bypass’ Saltford residents who want a bypass will have to accept major housing developments along with it, says a local commercial property expert. Paul Matthews from property consultancy Bruton Knowles said limited government funding meant that the “sad fact” was that developing surrounding land would be the only way to pay for such new roads. He said: “Unless a developer is on hand to pay for the infrastructure the schemes are unlikely to get off the drawing board.” The issue of a bypass for Saltford has divided villagers for many years, with some saying traffic needs to be diverted from the village to prevent pollution and congestion while others say it would open the door to developers to build on land in

between existing housing and any new road. Mr Matthews said the nearby South Bristol Link Road was an example of a new bypass and development going hand in hand. “The new link has created the infrastructure which could enable development of The Vale, Taylor Wimpey’s plan for 4,500 new homes on the southern outskirts of Bristol between the A370 and A38,” he said. He added that new housing earmarked for the Saltford, Keynsham and Whitchurch area could provide the impetus for a new bypass. “To be blunt, places like Banwell and Saltford will either have to put up with what they have got or open their arms to the major housing developments which will pay for their bypass.” l Letters – Page 16

Final piece of the jigsaw for route Work to complete a cycle and pedestrian route between Saltford and Wellsway School will be completed this month. Bath and North East Somerset Council is resurfacing the shared-use cycle and pedestrian path and upgrading dropped kerbs between Grange Road in Saltford and Ellsbridge Close in Keynsham. The work is being carried out over five weekends and is due to be completed by Monday, March 20, and is designed to create a safer route to school for students and local cyclists. Councillor Anthony Clarke (Conservative, Lansdown), Cabinet member for transport, said: “This is an important scheme that will complete a route through a very busy section of road. “In previous years improvements have been made to widen and resurface the cycle/pedestrian path between Ellsbridge Close and Wellsway

School, Keynsham and the provision of a toucan crossing near Norman Road, Saltford – so doing this is a key final piece of the jigsaw to support cyclists and pedestrians alike and part of our commitment to improve the network.” Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A4 as work is carried out over the weekends. This scheme is being funded by a grant for cycle/pedestrian improvement works in the Saltford and Keynsham area from the Local Growth Fund.

Comedy outing for village’s drama club Saltford Drama Club’s latest production should provide plenty of laughs for theatre fans as they present comedy Lettice & Lovage at Saltford Hall this month. Written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Sally Warhurst, the play will be staged from March 23-25 and tickets, available on 01225 400122, events@saltfordhall.co.uk or from Saltford Post Office, cost £10.

Ian’s painting is a first-class celebration of ‘mail by rail’ A painting produced by a Keynsham artist as he travelled overnight on one of the last Travelling Post Office mail trains has been turned into a stamp by Royal Mail. Ian Cryer captured postal staff at work sorting mail as the train headed for Bristol from Plymouth in the middle of the night in 2003. The oil painting, produced on an easel set up in the carriage and then completed in the railway sidings at the Royal Mail depot at Bristol Parkway, was then presented to more than 500 staff as a commemorative print when the service was ended in 2004. Now Royal Mail has turned the image into a first-class stamp as part of its Mail by Rail Post and Go set, which features six stamps that celebrate the heritage rail service. Ian, who was born in South Gloucestershire and has lived in the Keynsham area for almost 30 years, is an English Impressionist painter and paints mostly in the West Country, from Penzance and across to London. He and wife Felicity, a maths and science teacher, share a passion for railways, collecting and restoring railway vehicles, and for the year 1937 and the period’s fashion, furniture, music, transport and art. Ian has been painting and exhibiting professionally for more than 40 years - most recently at a one-man show at

Ian Cryer, inset, and his painting Travelling Post Office: Sorting the M1 Gallery in Greenwich, London – and is president of the London-based Royal Institute of Oil Painters. As well as periods as artist in residence with EWS Railway Company and Crossrail, many scenes closer to home have caught Ian’s eye and been turned into paintings. He said: “I paint landscapes and street scenes as well as the

railways in the landscape. I also paint interiors, especially pub interiors, including the Trout at Keynsham and the Conservative Club. I love to paint characters in social situations.” Find out more about the commemorative stamp set at www.royalmail.com/personal/ stamps-collectibles-gifts and visit Ian’s website at www.iancryer. co.uk

Letters to explain switch to fortnightly rubbish collections Residents across Keynsham and Saltford are being urged to look out for letters this month that will explain how their rubbish collections are changing. While recycling collections, including food waste, will remain weekly, most households will switch to rubbish collections every other week from November 6. Collection days and times may also change as Bath and North East Somerset Council redesigns routes. Cllr Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), cabinet member for community

services, said: “Over 70 per cent of councils across the UK, including our neighbours in Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, already run every-other-week collections for rubbish in wheeled bins, and most have weekly recycling collections. “They have all reported significant benefits including a reduction in the amount of rubbish sent to landfill, an increase in recycling, reduced street litter and cost efficiencies.” The council will provide

homes with a 140-litre wheeled bin for rubbish, although some houses may receive a larger bin or a reuseable rubbish bag depending on their needs. The council says the changes are aimed at increasing recycling rates, keeping streets cleaner and saving money as a lorry filled with waste costs £1,000 to dispose of, while a lorry-load of recycling earns £100. Most letters will be included in the same envelope as households’ council tax bills. Find out more at www.bathnes. gov.uk/recycle

Dentist fills gaps in practice’s history Staff at a Keynsham dental practice that is approaching its golden anniversary are hoping residents may be able to help them pin down the exact date it opened. Dave Stone has recently taken over management of Avon House Dental Practice in the High Street after working there for four years and he is now appealing for anyone who might remember when it first opened its doors. Mr Stone said some patients can remember visiting in the late 1960s or early 1970s but no one has been able to give the exact year so the practice can mark the occasion – with plenty of cake. He said: “If we can identify the practice as being open in 1967 then it will be our 50th anniversary this year - we hope we haven’t missed it. We have quite a few families with four generations that are all patients here and we are sure that some families have had five generations coming through our doors - just not all at the same time!” Anyone who can help can contact the practice on 0117 986 2992 or visit 5a-7a High Street.

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

A

nother good turnout assembled at the Fox & Hounds car park to catch the Dial-a-Ride minibus to Wick. Here we were joined by more walkers, who had made their own way to the start point. Under cloudy rain-free skies, the 20-plus walkers set off on a picturesque 3.5-mile walk around the Golden Valley, skirting the quarry, and through the woods. There were plenty of early spring blossoms on display, and a herd of deer were spotted to add to the interest. We arrived back at the Rose & Crown slightly ahead of time, but the staff treated us well as we waited for the minibus back home, everyone agreeing that it was a very memorable walk. Our thanks go to Jane Humphrys for organising this walk, and to Terry of Dial-a-Ride for giving up his Sunday lunchtime to chauffeur us. One of the joys of the group walks is the social side, which has really thrived. Because of this,

the organising group decided to try something new and arrange a social skittles evening. The Conservative Club kindly allowed us to use their alley, and more than 30 turned up for a night of fun, where socialising took precedence over the ability to skittle. Mike Stone won the opening game, with Anne Cox excelling herself by rolling her Creme Egg perfectly to win a bottle of Scotch. A raffle and a team game completed the highly

Walking footballers step into the spotlight Football players who like to play the game at their own pace have organised a sell-out concert to raise money for two cancer charities. Members of Keynsham Walking Football Club have formed a band – Walk Don’t Run – especially for the music benefit night on Friday, March 10, at Saltford Hall, where they will perform for family and friends who have all been touched by the work of Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Care. As well as the live music there will also be a disco provided by another club member, Derek Hardwell – or Mr D as he’ll be known on the night.

Local businesses have also pledged raffle prizes and items to auction, including a champagne balloon flight, designer handbags, MOT tests, golf days, signed Bristol City and Bristol Rovers shirts and more. The group have already raised £2,000 towards their target of £3,500, which will be split equally between the two charities. Anyone who would like to donate to the causes can contact Martin Coles at martincoles@ blueyonder.co.uk. To join the Keynsham Walking Football Club, just turn up and play at Keynsham Town Football Club’s AJN Stadium on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10am.

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Mothers’ Day – for humans and wildlife! Mothers’ Day falls on March 26 in 2017 – later than usual and after the official first day of spring, March 20, writes Dave Sage, chairman of Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group. There will be plenty of new mothers in the natural world, too. From frogs to toads laying hundreds of eggs in our ponds, to migrant warblers travelling hundreds of miles from southern Europe to find a mate, build a nest – and become mothers! Look out for early signs of spring, too: hazel catkins, frogspawn, ladybirds, snowdrops, crocuses, bumblebees and “mad March” hares. Before long, bluebells and wild garlic will be in flower to brighten up woodlands and swallows will complete journeys of thousands of miles from Southern Africa. Is there a better time of year than this reawakening of the natural world? The local group was reminded of what spring and summer can offer during February’s inspiring

talk by Helena Crouch on botanical treasures of the Mendips, from Cheddar pinks and mossy saxifrage, to harebells, autumn ladies’ tresses, meadow saffron and yellow star-ofBethlehem. This month’s meeting, 7.30pm on Friday, March 10, should be equally inspiring. Speaker Alex Rhodes is a young man with a passion for wildlife and adventure. He will be enthralling us with three exciting bird-ringing trips he made to the Scottish island of Fair Isle, the Peruvian Rainforest and Falstabo, the migration bottleneck of Sweden. Alex is the second young inspirational speaker we have had this year, following on from Mya-Rose Craig's excellent talk in January. A talk for all ages so come along and join us! The venue, as usual, is the Baptist Church hall in Keynsham High Street, with plenty of free parking in Ashton Way car park. No need to book; just turn up before the 7.30pm start. Entrance £2.50 for adults, £1 for under-16s.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Victorian Street Children

Our February meeting heard Shirley Hodgson give a detailed account of the lives of the destitute children who lived on the streets of Bristol in the 19th century and the efforts made to provide them with a home, education and, later, the chance to learn a trade. The remarkable and dynamic Mary Carpenter was at the forefront of these efforts with her ragged schools. Government was eventually persuaded to legislate and from 1857 Industrial Schools had a degree of state support, with Bristol’s Park Row School in the vanguard. With the help of some excellent photographs Shirley gave a most enjoyable evening that, perhaps more than anything else, made her audience realize just how much life has changed for the better in the last 200 years.

The remains of Keynsham Abbey

Prominent in the decoration of Keynsham’s new Clock Tower are the yellow petals representing the woad flower, which has a particular link with this locality. The plant originated in Asia but it has been widely grown in Europe for several thousand years, being one of the few natural sources of blue dye – obtained by crushing the leaves. Julius Caesar recorded that “all the Britons…. dye themselves with woad, which occasions a bluish colour, and thereby have a more terrible appearance in fight.” While the popularity of this body painting soon waned, woad remained an important source of dye for wool, flax and hemp until it was gradually superseded by indigo from the 18th century onwards So, what is the Keynsham connection? There are written

Wild about woad

references to woad dating from about 1500 in Publow and Pensford but the earliest in Keynsham was in 1746 when “William Saunders, the woadman” was buried in the parish church. Later references describe woad as one of the chief agricultural products of Somerset, although much was imported as well.

The woadman was responsible for both the cultivation and processing, with the latter being done on site after harvesting. Woadmen were itinerant to a degree as the plant took so many nutrients from the soil that it had to be rotated after a year or two. Although the plant has a two-year life cycle, the leaves have to be cut in the first year, and up to three crops could be cut in a season. If left for the second year the plant changes its appearance, growing five feet tall and showing a mass of bright yellow flowers. By this time the leaves are thinner and contain little colour. The leaves were pulped using a horse-gin, where the animal hauled a crushing-wheel round in a circle, and some remains of these still exist in the Chew Valley. Several other processes followed, to give a dark clay-like substance that could be sold to the dyer. The manufacture of dye-stuffs in Keynsham used other raw materials as well, such as ochre and, after the demise of woad, mills such as Albert Mill

moved to the crushing of imported barks. Like many techniques that had been lost, dyeing with woad has recently experienced a revival of interest among those with the time to produce by hand – indeed the plant now has its own website, full of fascinating facts.

March meeting – Keynsham Abbey

Our next evening meeting goes to the heart of Keynsham’s history – the abbey. Verity Anthony will be drawing on her knowledge of the few archaeological remains and artefacts that have survived since the Dissolution to tell us about the history of the building and institution that once dominated local life. The talk will be on Monday, March 20, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, though places may be limited. For details of the society’s full talks programme, visit www. keysalthist.org.uk or find us on Facebook.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult fiction

Hickory Dickory Dock by Agatha Christie “Hickory dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock…” And so begins the famous nursery rhyme and the start of this classic tale from the Queen of Crime – Agatha Christie. This is a Hercule Poirot mystery and begins with Hercule puzzling over why his ever-efficient secretary – Miss Lemon – has made three mistakes in a simple letter. It appears there is a petty thief in her sister’s workplace, which is distracting her. The items stolen are very intriguing, including a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup. The great detective agrees to investigate but there appears to be more than just simple theft going on and a killer appears to be lurking in the youth hostel. As with all Agatha Christie stories – I am a great fan – this is a great tale with curious characters and a whodunit that keeps you guessing until the end.

Adult fiction

A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin There is a small section in Keynsham Library that is for science fiction and fantasy books and among these are a number of books by George RR Martin from his saga called A Song of Ice and Fire. The books have been serialised in the very popular TV series Game of Thrones.

These are complex novels, following in the footsteps of a Norse saga with many characters and family members. But do not let this put you off. It is a sprawling tale and well written. Set between four lands, it follows the political intrigues of a number of families. There are battles, dragons, fabulous creatures and heroes. The books can be read without watching the TV series but they are also an excellent accompaniment.

cast as a bit of a tomboy. The landscapes of the giants’ world are beautifully drawn and reimagined. There were some stereotypical British elements, which to us might be a bit overdone, but Spielberg isn’t British! BFG is what it is… a light-hearted and delightful fantasy, which kids and adults will adore together.

Poetry

To celebrate National Poetry month why not try something different and have a look at the Poetry section upstairs in Keynsham Library?

Children’s DVD

The BGF Reviewed by Debbie Bellinger, Keynsham Library Assistant I remember reading this book as a child and I was glad that it got the proper film adaption that it deserved. While the film version forgoes many of the darker elements of Roald Dahl’s novel it does stay faithful to the story. Ten-year-old orphan Sophie is living in an orphanage in London and dreads staying there. One night while having difficulty falling asleep she encounters the BFG, aka the Big Friendly Giant, who takes her to giant country. However, Sophie discovers that other giants in giant country aren’t as friendly and eat human beings. I loved this adaption: it is charming, funny and engaging. The character of Sophie is well

Poems of the Seasons illustrated by Gordon Beningfield Gordon Beningfield’s exquisite watercolour paintings complement the huge variety of poems contained in this anthology on the changing seasons. Arnold, Blake, Browning, Chaucer, Rossetti, Shakespeare, Shelley and Wordsworth – all the favourites are here, along with many other poets from the past 400 years. A joy of an anthology to celebrate our national poets.

Picture books

Cooking with Herb: The Vegetarian Dragon – A Cookbook for Kids by Jules Bass and Debbie Harter This is a delightful book about a vegetarian dragon called Herb and all his favourite recipes, which you can try at home. Herb lives in the Forest of Nogard where all the

other dragons are meat-eaters. Meet Meathook and his hungry pals who think that nothing beats the taste of a crunchy knight-inarmour until Herb tempts them with some scrummy alternatives. You can also try these recipes, including pasta and sauce for a grand snap dragon – Herb’s Chilli Con ‘No’ Carne; the King’s favourite veggie burger and – my particular favourite – chocolate banana bread. This is a fun-packed cookery book for children and adults alike. The 20 recipes are easy to follow with great illustrations, cookery tips as well as a fab story that goes with them. Enjoy Herb!

n KEYNSHAM WALKING FESTIVAL 2017

Walking festival ready to set off again

A

fter the success of the inaugural walking festival last year, it was a simple decision for Keynsham Walkers are Welcome to organise a similar event this year, and we are very pleased to have Tesco as the event sponsor. The format follows the existing programme, but sadly the Methodist Ramblers have arranged a walking holiday over the weekend in question, so they will be missing this year. However, four new walks have been added. To promote walking in the community we have two short beginners’/taster walks around the park, and to encourage families and new walkers, these particular walks will be free of charge. Others who like just a short amble are more than welcome to join, as are children and dogs. Our own experienced members, Jane Humphrys and Dawn Drury, will be leading these. We are also pleased to have on board Alison Jordan, who is a qualified Nordic Walker running her own local tuition classes. She will be leading two walks over the weekend. Because of their specialist nature, numbers will be limited to 10 participants, so early booking is essential – and don’t forget your poles! Saltford Walkers and Somerdale Ramblers are joining us again this year, and are leading different walks around the local countryside, which the public are welcome to join. We are very thankful for their continued support. We again welcome the expertise of Richard Dyson of the Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society, who will be organising a themed walk around Hanham and Cleeve Woods, pointing out places of historical interest en route. Dave Sage, expert naturalist from the Avon Wildlife Trust, will be doing similar for nature enthusiasts. Dawn Drury will be putting in a second appearance and will be leading the longest walk of the festival on the Sunday, taking us around Burnett Woods. We have a grand Family Festival Finale in the Memorial Park on the Sunday afternoon starting at 1.30pm. There is a fun family nature treasure hunt, and we shall have children’s entertainment, with a visit from a troupe of Frozen

princesses. Jimmy Mac will be up to his usual tricks with his balloon routine, and face painting will be available with Caitlin Brennan. For our social event on the Saturday evening at the Scout Hall at 7.30pm, we are privileged to have Ruth Coleman, local film director, author and naturalist, presenting an illustrated talk and film on the River Avon. A free drink on arrival and a finger buffet

are included in the price of £6. As numbers are limited and early booking is essential. Programmes and booking for walks will be available from March 1 from Keynsham Town Council offices at 15-17 Temple Street during working hours. Tickets cost £3 per walk, except the ones for beginners, and can also be purchased on the day of the walk for £4. Our email address –

wrwkeynsham@outlook.com – can also be used for booking. Find full details of the Walking Festival 2017 on our website e-voice.org.uk/ keynshamwalkersarewelcome Our thanks go to Tesco for sponsorship and everybody who is giving up their time to help organise the event – it is very much appreciated. Delight at £1,000 to fight Parkinson’s

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Stephen M’Caw, team rector, Keynsham Parish

Goodness makes a nation great; wrong is a disgrace to any people” is a quote which some us may be more familiar with as: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.’” It’s a quote from a book in the Bible called Proverbs, which contains all kinds of pithy observations on life. When the Berlin wall fell in 1989, it was quickly followed within a year by the reunification of Germany. The costs were considerable for West Germany welcoming the economically weaker partner of East Germany on board, costing in all an estimated 2 trillion euros. The place that

Germany has at the international table was enhanced by this act of generosity. When apartheid was dismantled in South Africa in the early 1990s, the elections of April 27, 1994 brought into being a new country. This nation at peace with itself – a rainbow nation, as Nelson Mandela its president called it – seemed a miracle given the violence that foreshadowed its birth. The nation, and its president, was applauded by the watching world. By way of contrast the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014 was carried out by masked men in military uniform with no insignia. “Not us,” said the Russians at the time but subsequently the Russian president confirmed that his armed forces were active in Crimea, and a campaign medal was issued later that year by the Russian Federation, a medal for the “return of Crimea”. The Western media has

STORAGE

remained suspicious of Russian involvement in eastern Ukraine to this day. “Goodness makes a nation great; wrong is a disgrace to any people.” That nations might behave in either good or bad ways (i.e. morally) is part of what the saying above is describing. But the saying goes further: the proverb points to a link between greatness and goodness, that is between the right action and a nation going up in the eyes of the world, and wrongful behaviour belittling a nation and its people and bringing it lower. The proverb’s universal scope suggests that this applies to all countries, ourselves included. If this is so, we are being offered a lens through which to view our own actions as a country and other countries around the world. Greatness cannot be divorced from goodness.

Members of a support group for people living with Parkinson’s were delighted to receive more than £1,000 towards research into the condition from Keynsham fundraisers. Hazel Mitchell from the Parkinson’s UK Bath and District Branch received cheques from St Keyna Townswomen’s Guild and the residents of Homeavon House, which will go towards the charity’s work on finding a cure for the disease. Hazel said: “Words do not represent the huge amount of activity and sheer hard work which has gone into these impressive results. Homeavon’s coffee mornings have been on a grand scale during 2016, with raffle, cake stalls, tombola and other activities – all of which have resulted in a contribution of over £800. “A cure for Parkinson’s will be a miracle of hope and lifeenhancing quality.” The local group meets regularly at The Talbot pub, Keynsham – contact Hazel on 0117 336 0476 for more details.

GARDENING TIPS In the garden

O

n Saturday, February 4, I heard the first mower of spring (it was mine). I had had a busy day and at about 4pm I was looking to finish with a tidying job. No leaves to rake, no weeds to pull, life was looking good. It was a relatively mild day, and I checked the grass; it was almost dry. Good enough for a light cut. So out with the mower, I fired it up and away I went. After two stripes I checked the machine, expecting to find it choked with grass and moss. But it was quite clean so I completed the task on the highest setting. When I finished I was very pleased with the lawn. No bare patches, lovely stripes and looking quite lush. Since then it has been all

M

arch should be the time to start sowing seeds on the vegetable plot but with the wet weather at the end of February it may not be practical for a while until there is a dry spell. Don’t worry if this means sowings are done later than you would like because the plants will catch up. When working on the plot try to avoid walking on the soil especially if it is wet. I use wooden planks to gain access and this avoids muddy boots as well as minimising the amount of soil compaction where you walk. The soil in the prepared areas on my plot has been beaten

downhill. Hard frosts, condensation on the leaves and branches and rain have prevented any work on the hedges. I am anxious to get them done before the nesting season. I did manage to deadhead most of the hydrangeas, but it was a cold, miserable job. The choisya has had a nice trim but not so much as I would like. It has grown some chunky branches which are in the way, and if I cut them out I shall finish with bare patches. Choisyas seem to not like filling spaces. However, the hellebores are looking very colourful, the camellia has a host of fat buds, the snowdrops have appeared right on time, and the daffodils are well out of the ground. Our winter fowering jasmine has finished flowering so

I can cut it back quite hard to the trellis. The problem is that a robin has taken up residence in it so I shall have to cut by hand. It is less brutal than the hedge trimmer but a much longer job. I have managed to trim the tall viburnum hedge, which has grown very fat. The hedge is about 8ft tall and 3ft thick and looking very portly. After about 90 minutes it looked very bare but slimmer. Last summer it suffered an attack of viburnum beetle and the foliage looked very tatty. Hopefully it will put on some good leaf soon. One job leads to another. Having cleared the cuttings from the hedge, and raked the grass around it, the rest of the lawn looked untidy. So that led to a general clear-up in the garden. It is

surprising how much rubbish can be found. Dead heads, twigs, dead branches from ash trees, stalks from dormant plants, labels blown free from their plants and a couple of crisp bags blown in on the wind. It all goes in the green bin, apart from the crisp bags, which is filled and emptied every fortnight. I noticed the grass where the bin stands is a bit light in colour so hard standing had to be laid. There is always another job. We have had a wonderful display of snowdrops. And there are several crocuses showing signs of life. The clematis have some sturdy shoots. We have a cornus shrub visible from our lounge and it gives a splendid display. Now is the time to cut it back to give it a good chance to grow new wood.

down by the torrential rain so before sowing I will gently break up the surface with a rake or threepronged cultivator. This will allow air into the soil and speed up the drying process, then when ready use the rake again to obtain a nice fine tilth. Apply some fertilizer as you wish when preparing your seed beds but be careful to follow the rate of application guidelines and don’t over-apply as this can do more harm than good. March sowings will include broad beans, leeks, carrots, parsnips as well as shallot and onion sets. Later in the month Brussels sprout, cabbage, peas and radishes can be sown. If you have access to a protected indoor area

with a bit of heat e.g. a greenhouse, cold frame or a windowsill then you can also sow celery and lettuce as well as indoor and outdoor tomatoes. Sow the seeds into seed trays or recycled plant trays filled with good quality compost but if you use peat-free compost then normally the surface covering over the seeds will need sieving. Keep the compost moist but not wet and be careful as plants can get tall and spindly if left crowded and searching for the light, especially on a windowsill. Thin the seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Alternatively you can get a head start with outdoor sowings

if you prepare the ground first. Cover the area with cloches, clear polythene or fleece for a couple of weeks to help the soil warm up and allow some of the weed seeds to germinate. Before sowing, remove the covering then hoe the soil and get rid of the weed seedlings before sowing your vegetable seeds. Don’t forget to include in your seed sowing some flowers that attract pollinators, especially bees. If you plan to grow potatoes then buy your seed now and place the tubers out in trays in a light, frost-free area so that they start to form healthy shoots and wait until the end of March before planting.

Blue – without getting the blues

A

with interior designer Zoe Hewitt

lthough blue is the people’s choice when it comes to favourite colours, it is a lesser spotted tone around the home. With its watery associations, blue tends to be confined to bathrooms and then usually only in polite, pale portions. Blue isn’t a common candidate for sitting rooms or bedrooms, as we tend to equate it with cool, cold or even sadness. Yet, navy and denim blues have already been trending for a while among the early adopters of the interiors world, so here are my pointers for trying out blue – without getting the blues. Smaller spaces that don’t receive much natural light are perfect for bolder colour choices. As counter-intuitive as that may sound, the convention of using

white or light shades to make a room seem larger is a popular misnomer. Pale hues can easily look insipid and lifeless where deeper tones add drama and interest instead. So turn up the saturation and increase the energy in the space. Choose a warm blue – they do exist! If you are worried about it all seeming cool, particularly at this chilly time of year, a slight hint

of purple will read as warmer than a greenblue. Powder blue can look juvenile, whereas navy is sophisticated, and although it is true that darker walls tend to be thought of as masculine, you can balance things out with pretty feminine or vintage touches, like dainty china and accessories. Bring pattern into the scheme, be it on a rug, cushion, throw or art print to break up large expanses of blue, and add interest and homeliness. Flowers and plants always add life to a room. As the complementary colour to blue, yellow blooms will really sing in a flower arrangement. l Zoë Hewett is an independent interior designer – www. zoehewettinteriors.co.uk

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field February was a topsy-turvy month for Keynsham Town’s First Team in the Toolstation Western League Division One, starting with two defeats but ending with two league wins and a famous cup victory.

The month began with a disappointing 2-1 reverse at Chippenham Park. Keynsham had the best of a tight first half and deservedly took the lead just before half-time. A jinking run by Ben Harris created an opening for leading scorer Matt Brown, who made no mistake from six yards. However, two defensive errors around the hour mark proved costly for the Ks, and their profligacy in front of goal meant that they left emptyhanded. Next up was a tough trip to fellow promotion challengers Cheddar on a cold, blustery afternoon. Keynsham gave a debut to new signing Adey Harvey, who joined them from Ashton & Backwell United the day before the game, but he couldn’t prevent them slipping to a 2-0 defeat. A bobbly pitch did little to help either side and it was a dour affair. The hosts took the lead with a well-taken goal in the 34th minute, but the points were not sealed until a controversial penalty was converted by the hosts five minutes from time. In an attempt to freshen things up, manager Chris King made a few changes for the next game, which saw Friday night football return to Crown Fields with Bishop Sutton the visitors. Jamie Price and Harvey Baker were brought into a new-look midfield alongside Adey Harvey, and Tom Harris got his first start of the year due to the absence of Matt Brown. Keynsham started the game really brightly and after several missed chances, a penalty was awarded on 38 minutes for a push. Ben Harris stepped up and

Matt Brown receives the Man of the Match award from the Under-12 Colts after the Ks’ victory against Wellington calmly slotted it home to settle the home team’s nerves. The visitors had a few opportunities so it wasn’t all plain sailing, but once skipper Jason Adams scored from Ben Harris’s free kick in the 51st minute, they took control of the game. A third goal soon followed, as Tom Harris’s corner created havoc at the far post, resulting in an own goal which sealed a 3-0 win. Chris King said: “All in all it was great to get that winning feeling back and secure the three points as well as picking up that longawaited clean sheet again.” That win gave the players some renewed confidence and they followed it up with a fantastic result again Southern League side Paulton Rovers in the Somerset Premier Cup the following Tuesday night. They were obviously underdogs against Paulton, but the Ks upped their game to produce one of Keynsham’s biggest scalps for some time. After Ben Harris cut into the penalty area to curl a superb goal on 16 minutes, it gave the home team the belief that they could overturn their higher-ranked opposition. The visitors were awarded a penalty

on the stroke of half-time, but Ks keeper Ash Wintle guessed the right way to pull off a great save. Keynsham then defended really well in the second half to keep another clean sheet. The win sees them through to the cup’s semi-final stage for only the second time since they won the competition back in 197980. Another Southern League outfit, Taunton Town, will visit Crown Fields for the semi-final on Tuesday, March 28, when local cricketing hero Marcus Trescothick will be guest of honour. The Ks were in buoyant mood going into the crunch top-ofthe-table clash at home to league leaders Wellington four days later, and they came away with a superb 2-0 victory. After an even first half in which good chances were at a premium, two excellent team goals in seven second-half minutes sealed the points. Firstly winger Kyle Box produced some trickery down the left and hung a cross to the far post, which was headed home by Adey Harvey for his first goal for the club. Another flowing move then saw Ben Harris whip a cross in, which was gleefully volleyed home by Matt

Brown for his 23rd goal of the season. This win, combined with a shock home defeat for Cheddar, thrust Keynsham right back into the race for promotion. Forthcoming home games l Saturday, March 11 Radstock Town (League) 3pm kick-off l Tuesday, March 28 Taunton Town (Somerset Premier Cup Semi-Final) 7.45pm kick-off Off the field, the club’s Forecast 3 prize pot has still not been won since late August, with the jackpot currently standing at over £1,400! Getting green ready for milestone year

With the new bowling season just a month away, members of the Winter Working Group at Keynsham Bowling Club are putting the final touches to the bowling green at Keynsham Memorial Park, writes our correspondent. About 15 willing volunteers meet each Monday morning throughout the close season under the watchful eye of clubhouse manager Derek Phelps to carry out essential maintenance and improvements. Our picture shows, from left to right, Bill Byrne, Allan Waters and Roger Palmer extending the roof of the old score board to provide shelter from the showers. SPORT Girls all play part in team’s futsal success In a determined mood, the Fry’s U18 Girls brushed all sides away to reach the semi-final of the Gloucestershire FA Girls’ Futsal Cup, writes our correspondent. The girls really played with great skill, speed and enthusiasm throughout the competition, with many goals from Ellie Brockton and Georgia Sweet along with other members of the team. Kelsey Manning showed why she captained with great marshalling of her team mates and leading by example. Amy

Croom certainly was the inspiring fire in the side with trickery and toughness. The opposition found an inspired Emily Rose in goal stopping many a goal-bound shot. Lauren Smith, Jade White, Chloe Lapham and Jade Poolman all played their part in the girls’ success in reaching the semifinal, before they lost to Hereford United Girls. The Fry girls then won third place in the third/fourth play-off against Tuffley Girls.

Children’s football charity enlists star supporters and kicks off fundraising A fun night out and some special visitors have helped a new grassroots football charity start the year on the best footing. The newly launched #Football4Everyone initiative, which aims to give every child the chance to train with professionals whatever their ability, raised £800 when charity leaders Ben Geracitano, Jack Cox and Jon Connors organised a ladies’ night at Somerdale Pavilion. Entertainment included live music and comedian Angie Belcher and Ben said: “We are overwhelmed with the generosity and pleased that the ladies enjoyed themselves.” Then during half-term, the charity hosted a fun two-day soccer camp with coaching from Ben and Jon – before a special guest joined the children for

some training. Gogglebox star and Hereford footballer Tristan Plummer dropped in, joined the session and posed for photos – in his role as #Football4Everyone ambassador. A few days later it was time to say hello to another visitor and ambassador when Yeovil Town Ladies player Hannah Short

stopped off at the Somerdale Pavilion. To find out more about #Football4Everyone, email info. football4everyone@gmail.com or visit http://everyone4football. weebly.com Tristan Plummer visits a soccer camp, above; Ben, Jack and Jon at the ladies’ night, right
