The anti-social behaviour affecting Keynsham has no quick fix – but there are many people willing to play a part in finding one, a meeting on the issue has revealed. Residents, police, traders, councillors, the head teachers from both of the town’s secondary schools, the library
service and community and church groups all came together on February 22 to discuss how to tackle issues ranging from vandalism and verbal abuse to threatening behaviour and drug use. The meeting, organised by Keynsham Town Council, follows rising concerns over the level of
anti-social behaviour in the town – which began at the end of last summer with incidents including severe damage to the Memorial Park bandstand’s roof and a disturbance at Time Out youth centre that resulted in the police being called. The council said its youth Turn to Page 2

A new initiative, Keynsham Community Spirit, was launched online just weeks ago with exactly that goal and has already gained around 350 members, founder Trisha Williams told the meeting. Speaking alongside new chair Trisha Lahner, she said she believed reduced public services had had an impact on the community and there was frustration and anger at damaged or stolen property and fear among elderly and vulnerable people as well as those with young children. KCS’s aim was to work together to create diversionary activities for young people and to inspire and encourage them, she said. “Despite the frustration, we want to find positive and effective ways together and make young people feel valued,” she said. “We have had lots of positive feedback, ideas, skills
and experience offered and together we need to tap into this community spirit. We can only do it with support, alongside police, the council, youth workers and agencies, and establish an effective network. This could be a legacy for the town with positive effects long into the future.” Sergeant Jon Bagnowiec told the meeting that the police were keen to work with other agencies and groups to tackle the issue, the key to which was long-term and involved officers talking in schools, working with youth services and engaging with drug users, he said. Police received around one call a day to report anti-social behaviour in the Keynsham area in the four weeks leading up to February 16, similar to Frome in the same period, he told the meeting. There were also 24 local reports of criminal damage in the same period, 11 of which were related to anti-social behaviour. He added: “Keynsham is a safe place to live and work – although it does experience some crime and disorder it’s less than most. We will take part in any initiative, returning residents

Officers say they would like to speak to anyone who saw the car parked in the car park at The Shallows between 6pm and 8pm on Thursday, February 8. They said it is likely that passing dog walkers saw the car.

Teenager in court over shop assault A teenager from Keynsham has appeared in court after hitting a shop worker on the head in the High Street last year. The 17-year-old boy was given a conditional discharge when he appeared before Bath Youth Court on Thursday, February 22. The boy was charged with assault after a member of staff was hit on the head when he asked a group of young people to move away from the shop doorway on June 14. Police said he was not injured in the incident. The youth court heard the teenager had kept out of trouble since the incident and had been engaging with services. He was ordered to pay £185 in costs and compensation and received an eight-month conditional discharge, which means he must stay out of trouble or face a sentence for the assault if he commits another offence.

‘Town needs more police on streets’ From Page 3 the area were being looked into. Concern over policing levels in the town were raised by Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale, an issue that could only be tackled with more funding at national level, he said. “We don’t have enough police on the streets,” he added. “People must write to the MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, as he is the only one who can put his hand up in Parliament. He needs to know the strength of feeling.” A police spokesperson confirmed that the neighbourhood policing team consists of four PCSOs, one fulltime and one part-time officer, and has just appointed a third beat manager – the same level of policing the town has had for six years. Fly-tipper who dumped pile of waste at Scouts’ campsite is fined £6,400 A man who dumped 12 tonnes of rubbish in countryside across Bath and North East Somerset, including on land owned by 1st Keynsham Scouts, has been fined £6,400. Garth Creese, from Crediton Crescent in Bristol, pleaded guilty to nine offences under the Environmental Protection Act after fly-tipping in Rankers Lane, Compton Dando, Keynsham Scouts’ Chelwood Campsite, at the site of an Iron Age fort in Stantonbury Hill and Stanton Prior. The site at Chelwood is used for camping and a range of activities by the Scouts and other youth groups. Creese, 30, who runs a waste clearance business, was also ordered to pay £450 costs and a victim surcharge of £160 when he appeared before Bath
Fly-tipped rubbish at Chelwood campsite Magistrates’ Court on February 19. The prosecution described his actions as “environmental vandalism” and said it had cost landowners more than £3,500 to clear up after him.
The fly-tipped waste was reported between November 24 and December 13, 2016, and included builders’ rubbish, blackbagged household waste, a sofa, chairs and a fridge freezer. The court heard that Creese
showed customers an expired waste carriers’ permit and charged prices that would not have covered the cost of legitimate disposal. Speaking after the guilty plea, Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “The investigation took a lot of time but this is an excellent result for the council and its Waste Enforcement Team, which I want to thank for its hard work. “This sends a clear message that we will always prosecute. Fly-tipping is anti-social and in this case a blight on beautiful countryside. “We want to remind people that if you employ a waste clearance company, please make sure it is a reputable one with an up-to-date waste carriers’ licence.”

Delight at Voice’s award nomination Why are rabbits considered exotic species?
T
here are 1.3 million pet rabbits in the UK, making them the country’s third most popular pet. They are often classed as exotic species due to their unique health requirements and as such it is always wise to seek out a rabbit-savvy vet for your pet. For instance, unlike cats and dogs, rabbits’ teeth grow constantly and unless the rabbit is fed a highfibre diet (predominantly grass and hay) to help them grind them down, their teeth will keep growing and develop spurs that dig into the soft tissue in the mouth. This causes pain and a rabbit will often no longer want to eat certain types of food, or any food at all. Dental disease in rabbits can also do more complex things like damage the tear duct or nasal passages of the rabbit. This is just one of the reasons why specialist treatment is often sought for rabbits by their owners. It is important to see a vet who understands the complex disease processes that can occur in these seemingly uncomplicated pets. Rabbits also need lots of space. Without good mobility they can develop skeletal problems, obesity and sores on their feet. Even though it is a common way of keeping rabbits, a conventional hutch is not enough. Rabbits should always be kept in pairs with
their housing a minimum of 6ft x 2ft to provide enough space for them to make at least three hops and stretch right out. They should also be able to stand on their back legs without their ears touching the roof. Rabbits need lots of exercise and therefore, ideally, their house should be attached to a run of a minimum of 8ft. Throwing away 60p parking ticket could have cost me £100, says driver A Keynsham driver says he could be as much as £100 out of pocket now if he hadn’t taken the unusual step of keeping hold of a 60p parking ticket he bought in January. Terry Barton from Keynsham visited Somerdale Pavilion on Monday, January 29, for a health assessment with wife Pat, entering the car park at 2.44pm. After realising there was a charge and visiting reception to get change for the machine within the 10-minute “grace period” for drop-offs and pick-ups, Terry paid 60p for an hour of parking starting from 2.54pm. Their appointment lasted less than 30 minutes and the couple returned to their car and drove home, leaving the car park at 15.20pm. But just over a week later, a
parking charge notice arrived from Smart Parking Ltd – the company that manages the car park – telling Terry he had to pay £100 for “unauthorised parking”, or the reduced amount of £60 if he paid within 14 days. Terry said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter – I had paid but how could I have proved that if I didn’t still have the ticket? It was only because a man in the car park said I should keep it that I put it away somewhere – I would normally have thrown it away, which I expect most people would do.” The fine was cancelled by Smart Parking Ltd after being contacted by staff at Somerdale Pavilion. The parking company was appointed by Aquaterra – the charity that runs Somerdale Pavilion
– and St Monica Trust to manage their car parks on the Somerdale site, to ensure parking spaces are available for customers and visitors and to tackle anti-social behaviour, including speeding and drug use. Pavilion manager Patrick Shanahan said 1,500 people were exempt from paying for parking at the site, including members of sports teams and anyone who pays the £25 annual Pavilion social membership fee. People using the venue for an event or conference can also be added to the visitor list to enable them to use the car park for free. He said: “Hundreds of people each week pay for parking, register their details correctly and don’t get a charge. “We appointed Smart Parking in good faith to control park-
ing for our own customers and to manage the use of the car park following some anti-social behaviour. “We do not receive any money from parking fines and we are not trying to deter people – we have given exemptions to more than 1,500 people who don’t have to pay to park. “We meet regularly with Smart Parking and will be meeting with them again in the next couple of weeks to review some of the recent issues that have come up.” Drivers can appeal parking charge notices they believe have been issued in error by writing to Smart Parking Ltd or filling in a form on the company’s website. Smart Parking Ltd did not respond to requests for a comment before we went to print.

Views on one-way system ‘like Brexit’ Council officers have been “overwhelmed” by the response to a call for views on Keynsham’s one-way High Street trial. Speaking at Keynsham Town Council’s meeting on February 20, regeneration team manager Tim Hewitt said there had been well over 1,000 responses to the council with more than two weeks to go until the consultation closed on March 1. This response was “significantly higher than expected”, he said, with most responses submitted online. B&NES representatives had also carried out surveys in the High Street, he said, with many different opinions as to whether the one-way system should stay or go – telling town councillors it could be likened to “Keynsham’s Brexit”. Officers will be analysing the results of the consultation in coming weeks before presenting the findings to B&NES Council’s cabinet and recommending next steps at the end of March.

£88,000 proposal to upgrade CCTV network in Keynsham New CCTV is proposed for Keynsham as part of an £88,000 investment in the town’s network of cameras. The plan by Bath and North East Somerset Council would see the system updated and improved to make it more reliable and to give better coverage of the town. New cameras would be installed at Hicks Gate roundabout and at the railway bridge near Keynsham Station, while CCTV in the Memorial Park and all existing cameras in public spaces would be upgraded to join the wireless network. The proposal is currently being considered by Councillor Charles Gerrish, cabinet member for finance and efficiency, and Councillor Mark Shelford, cabinet member for transport and environment. Money for
the scheme will come from the section 106 funding agreement struck with the developers at the Somerdale site. If the plan gets the goahead, the existing microwave link will be replaced with a more reliable wireless network and the microwave mast at Sulis Meadows in Bath will be removed. Councillor Gerrish said: “I have been asked to consider
this investment which would enhance the CCTV in the town centre where there has been a significant increase in antisocial behaviour and growing public concern about it. The scheme would also provide more flexibility and is more reliable.” B&NES Council currently has 12 high-resolution, colour cameras in Keynsham, which are all linked to a 24-hour central control room in Bath.

Campaigners raise lack of allotments Campaigners are urging planning chiefs to rule that allotments for current east Keynsham residents must be included in a new housing development. Members of Keynsham Liberal Democrats are hoping to persuade Bath and North East Somerset Council to insist that 50 plots are provided on land bordered by Bath Road and the Chandag Estate. Outline planning permission for up to 250 homes and a new primary school has been granted to Mactaggart and Mickel, whose application for the development states that allotments may be included as part of a park area, and a patch of land is included on a “masterplan” map. Campaigners Hal MacFie and Andy Wait said the National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardens (NSALG)
recommended that the minimum provision should be 20 standard (300sq yd) plots per 1,000 households. Residents from two of Keynsham’s newest neighbourhoods teamed up to hold their first community cleanup last month. Around 15 neighbours from the Meadows, at the end of Park Road, got together to tackle litter around the estate and the nearby woodlands before meeting up with a group from the Bilbie Green estate. The bagged-up rubbish was collected by Bath and North East Somerset Council and the neighbours have already arranged their second clean-up when they hope more people will get involved. Meadows resident and organiser Kai von Pahlen said: “Protecting the environment from plastic and other waste is currently a big issue in the news. Volunteers join up for big spring clean Keynsham and Saltford’s growing band of volunteer litter-pickers will be giving their communities a spring clean this month and are inviting people to join them. Keynsham Wombles are meeting at points across the town on Saturday, March 3, from 2pm, as part of the Great British Spring Clean initiative. Areas that will be given a clean-up include the Memorial Park, train station, Dapps Hill, around the Lock Keeper pub and the Meadows. A group will also be meeting at Corston. Record Santa Dash raises over £12,000
A record number of runners helped Saltford’s Santa Dash raise more than £12,000 to support terminally ill children and their families. The fifth event, held in December, saw more than 500 adults and 400 children take part in the costumed run in aid of the Jessie May Trust. Presenting a cheque to the hospice at home charity, chair of the Santa Dash organising committee Richard Evans said: “I would like to congratulate all who were involved in the Santa Dash event be they the route marshals, local community groups, our generous business and personal sponsors, Saltford Sports and Social Club and all the runners, without whose support the event would not be possible. “I would also like to thank the many members of the local community who came out to cheer and encourage the participants. The day itself was a huge success and I am delighted

with PC James Evans What’s happening around Keynsham this month? n Our sergeant from the local policing team attended Keynsham Town Council’s meeting to discuss anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Keynsham. During the meeting PS Bagnowiec gave a summary of the issues that we are facing and problem-solving that we are putting in place to combat them. We were also represented by ASB officer Tim Harris, who explained the methods that we use when dealing with offenders involved in this sort of behaviour. The meeting was streamed live on the Keynsham Town Council Facebook page and is still available to be viewed there. During the meeting there was

T
he Education Service in the Houses of Parliament does a wonderful job of explaining how Parliament works and allowing children to see around the Palace of Westminster. I met a group from the Saltford Scouts who had left Somerset at 7.15am on a coach to visit various London sites and have a tour of the Houses of Parliament. I spoke to them about my work as a Member of Parliament in the Education Centre and answered questions before they went off for their tour. One of the questions I was asked was did I find being an MP “fun”? This is a difficult point to answer as although I enjoy my role it is not in any sense frivolous, it is the most serious work I have ever

done, yet it is both interesting and enjoyable mainly because of the people I meet. The Scouts are a fine example of this, they seek to train young people for a life of service to the nation and teach them skills that will be useful in later life, but are also pleasurable in themselves. Equally they need adult supervision, which is mainly provided by volunteers who give generously of their time to encourage and open young minds to the world around them. The Scouts were founded in 1910 by Robert Baden-Powell who had famously led the successful and truly heroic defence of Mafeking, which had been besieged for 217 days. He wanted the young to learn in a way that would inspire them throughout their lives and the Scouts still do this. I am glad that I was able to be part of their introduction to Parliament but I hope that others will follow in their footsteps for the Education Service welcomes everybody and if any group of young people would like help in coming to the Houses of Parliament I hope they will contact me.

Many of us have been shocked recently by the terrible damage plastic is doing to our environment. I was really surprised to find that plastic can only be recycled a few times, unlike aluminium and glass, which can be recycled forever. Trying to reduce plastic use is difficult, it’s often wrapped around things like aluminium cans or even bananas! I was delighted to find one of our local shops, G&D free, now stocks a range of products where you can refill your own containers. So far we’ve filled up on pasta, muesli, coffee beans and even refilled our washing up liquid bottle. And, of course, Buss’s the greengrocers on the High Street sells the majority of its fruit and veg without any packaging, just take your own bags.

Bank has lost our business over plans Regarding the proposed closure of the NatWest Bank in Keynsham, we have banked here for many years and have only ever given them ten out of ten. The staff, who I cannot thank enough, have been so helpful and pleasant over this time. But it seems loyalty doesn’t come into it any more, so we have decided to change our bank, not to be left high and dry. I am sure many others will do the same. As it has been said, Keynsham’s population is getting larger by the day – can’t NatWest see this? I regret having to change my bank as over the years we have never had a problem. Reunion 50 years on from ‘Speech Day’ For dozens of former Keynsham Grammar School pupils, 2018 marks 50 years since they sat their fifth-form exams and either went off to work or into higher education. Their exam certificates were handed out in front of the whole school at Speech Day on October 30, 1968, with guest speaker Professor K Austwick from Bath University.
Among the graduating pupils was Bill Payter, who is now hoping to arrange a reunion for all three fifth-form classes – 5U, 5I and 5N – many of whom he hasn’t seen since that Speech Day. Bill says he hopes to organise an event for October in the Keynsham or Bath area and is inviting former schoolmates to get in touch at payter@globalnet.co.uk
A teacher who worked at Keynsham Grammar School and then Wellsway School for 25 years has died. Don Hiscox, who was Head of English, worked at the schools from 1958 until 1983 and remained in touch with the school even after his retirement as he lived opposite the gates in Chandag Road and was a regular visitor. He also attended the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations
in 2007 and is pictured in the centre of the photo above. Former pupils paid tribute to a “wonderful” teacher whose sense of humour is remembered by many. Writing on Facebook, one said: “He was a fabulous teacher and we still talk about him with great affection nearly 40 years on – says it all.” His funeral was due to take place at Weston-super-Mare crematorium in Worle on February 26.
Unwanted tools can ‘build up communities’ Unwanted tools will be gratefully received by a group of fundraisers organising a collection next month. Members of the Rotary Club of Keynsham Chew Valley will be in Waitrose’s car park on April 14 gathering any hand tools that can be used by metalworkers, woodworkers, mechanics, electricians and builders as well as hand sewing machines. The donated tools will then be refurbished and sent to Africa
where they are given out by the charity Tools for Self Reliance, which also trains people in how to use them. A Rotary spokesperson said: “Giving the local people the tools and training needed enables them to build up their communities.” The Keynsham collection will take place on April 14 from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Glitzy event brings charity closer to goal A Keynsham charity made some big steps towards its goal of buying its own premises when it hosted a glitzy dinner and auction evening, raising more than £3,100. Members, staff and volunteers from Keynsham Mencap were joined at the gala event on February 17 at Saltford Golf Club by families, trustees, corporate guests and supporters of the society to enjoy both a silent and live auction, a raffle, live jazz from Nicki Jefferis and Anders Olinder and a meal served up by Haywards Kitchen. Davies and Way’s Michael Ashbee took on the role of auctioneer, overseeing bids on items that included meals out, a family ticket to a range of attractions, free pizzas at Keynsham’s B Block donated by St Monica Trust, Great Western Railway rail tickets, a framed print by artist Anna Smith and a half-day retreat for two at Bath’s Royal Crescent Hotel.

Chris aims to bring hope of vital surgery
A former Wellsway student is taking on his toughest challenge yet to bring hope to people born with cleft lip and palate in Malawi – the same condition that affected him as a baby. Chris Williams has raised thousands of pounds for charities working with people who have the condition by undertaking walks and a skydive – and now he is taking on the gruelling London to Brighton 100km Challenge in May. It’s the second time Chris will attempt the trek, which he estimates will take up to 30 hours to complete, after he and partner James had to drop out in 2016 after 18 and half hours of walking. They have set themselves a fundraising target of £2,000, which will sponsor an operating table on a medical mission to Malawi, helping more than 150 people undergo cleft surgery. The treatment is provided by international medical charity

who had been living with the condition for 70 years and was brought to the hospital by her daughter, where Chris showed her a photo of himself as a baby before he had had any operations. “Her eyes widened in disbelief, with hand gestures to suggest, ‘Who is that?’” Chris said. “I pointed at my lip and said, ‘This was me, and it will be you too’. She looked at me and smiled – she stretched out her hand and placed it in mine. The translator then said, ‘Akonile says thank you – thank you for giving me hope’. It was undoubtedly one of the best and most emotional experiences of my life.” The London to Brighton Challenge takes place on the May Bank Holiday, May 25 and 26. Wales and West Utilities made the donation to Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (KDAA), which has enabled the group to book Keynsham Dial a Ride transport to its twicemonthly Music for the Mind sessions for a number of care home residents. The funding will cover the cost for a year and came about after a chance meeting between KDAA chairman Alan Hale and Wales and West Utilities business project analyst Sophie Shorney. Sophie said: “We are keen to support the communities where we work and when I learnt of the support the DAA provides to those living with dementia, as well as their families and carers, we jumped at the chance of helping to positively impact the lives of those individuals.” The DAA holds Music for the

New role at Cocoa is sweet for Jodie

ocoa Hair Design is now under new management since experienced stylist Jodie Hawkins took over the salon at the start of the year. Jodie has worked in the salon for 12 years, beginning her apprenticeship there at the age of 16 when it was called SLR, and has now achieved her goal of owning her own salon. Cocoa Hair Design has been established in Keynsham for more than 10 years and its name was inspired by the town’s chocolate factory. Queens Road Methodist Church Pre-School has been selected as one of three good causes to receive a donation from Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative. Customers’ votes at Tesco Keynsham throughout March and April will determine how much the causes will get, with grants of up to £4,000, up to £2,000 and £1,000 available. A spokesperson for the preschool said any cash they receive will be spent on new technology to help the youngsters learn and added: “We are continually fundraising to provide toys and equipment for the children and this scheme would really help to provide tablets and

Youngsters at Chandag Infant School enjoyed a trip into outer space – without leaving the school hall. The team from Explorer Dome set up their giant inflatable planetarium and seven-year-old Lucas wrote us a report on the day. Before the holidays, something really exciting happened! The Explorer Dome came to teach us about space and it was really dark! My favourite part was when the stars went on the ceiling. They were very bright. The dome was as big as half the
hall. It was a great big, massive, grey thing that was blown up with lots of air. There was enough room to sit down inside. We saw Orion up in the sky. Daniel said: “I found out that there was only one star in our solar system – the Sun.” Lucy said: “It made me feel very, very dizzy. It also made me laugh a lot. I also found out that the North Star doesn’t move.” Elsa said: “I loved it. It was my best day of the week, even including Saturday and Sunday.”

Scouts go behind scenes at Westminster Saltford Scouts enjoyed a memorable day in London with a trip to Westminster to see inside the Houses of Parliament. After walking from Buckingham Palace, members of 1st Saltford Scout Troop were
met by North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, who explained his role as a Member of Parliament and answered the young visitors’ questions. The Scouts were then given a tour of the Palace of
Westminster, even getting the chance to stand at the despatch box where the Prime Minister and other Ministers deliver their speeches. A visit to Tower Bridge followed, where Scouts found out more about the landmark and
tested their bravery by walking across its glass walkways 42 metres above the River Thames. The group had a quick walk around the Tower of London before boarding their coach and heading back to Saltford.

More than 100 Keynsham Scouts and Explorer Scouts recently took part in the annual Keynsham Scouts’ air rifle shooting competition. Congratulations to all who took part, some were being introduced to the sport for the first time. Taking part is just one aspect and it is a requirement of the Scouting Master of Arms Award. The Scout group has a Keynsham Scout Rifle Club section which meets on Sunday evenings shooting .177 air rifles and air pistols. Pupils bring musical magic to Wellsway
Wellsway School pupils took audiences on a trip to the West End with a spectacular production celebrating the songs from the shows. More than 100 youngsters took part in A Night at the Musicals, making up the cast, chorus and band and performing to a full house for three nights. Ingrid McLean, head of music, said students had been rehearsing for the show since September to ensure a slick performance. “Staff were hugely proud of the dedication and commitment shown by all students involved,” she said. “The show featured solos from students in Year 7 to Year 13 and demonstrated what a promising future the performing arts department holds.” Wellsway School principal Matthew Woodville thanked Ms McLean, head of drama Hannah Davies and other staff for giving up evenings and weekends to support the students on and off

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group
The deadliest ocean predators – and sharks!
T
he February meeting of Keynsham’s Avon Wildlife Trust group provided a whole new insight into sharks, one of the most misunderstood and persecuted groups of animals on earth, writes chairman Dave Sage. The talk was superbly delivered by Bristol Zoo’s aquarium curator, marine biologist Olivia Orchart. A self-confessed shark addict, her talk was enthusiastic, witty, knowledgeable and pitched perfectly for the audience of over 50 members, who clearly appreciated her powerful conservation message at the end. Sharks are among the oldest fish on earth, with fossils as old as 420 million years, easily predating the dinosaurs! They have survived five mass extinctions and more than 3,000 species have been found in the fossil record, so they are clearly a highly successful group. They are very diverse, ranging from the huge whale shark (14 metres long) and basking shark (10 metres long), both of which are plankton feeders, to the tiny dwarf lantern shark (17 cm long). Perhaps the most bizarre is the hammerhead shark, with an extraordinary sensory system which enables it to detect the slightest movement of its prey. There are zebra sharks (although only the juvenile sharks are striped), leopard sharks, angel sharks (critically endangered but making a remarkable recovery off the Canary Islands), and catsharks (including dogfish and nursehounds), to name just a few.
Bristol Zoo’s Olivia Orchart and her thought-provoking final slide More than 40 shark species visit the British Isles annually, 21 of which are present all year round. These include the beautifully streamlined shortfin mako shark (three metres long), capable of speeds of 30 miles per hour, making it the fastest shark in the world! Olivia described some of the remarkable adaptations of sharks, which have enabled them to survive and thrive for so long on Earth. These include an oil-filled liver, making them very buoyant; a light, strong and flexible cartilaginous skeleton; and a sensory system that includes a phenomenal sense of smell (some can detect one drop of blood in
a volume of water the size of a swimming pool!); teeth which can taste (which explains the “test bite”, where sharks sometimes bite their prey then immediately release it if it is unpalatable, which sometimes happens with humans); electroreception (the ability to detect tiny electrical disturbances from the heartbeat of prey); and a lateral line, which detects tiny pressure changes in the water. It didn’t take Olivia long to establish that our audience, in common with most of the population, associate sharks with the Jaws films, shark attacks off tropical beaches and generally negative media coverage of three-
to four-metre-long monsters preying on helpless swimmers. In truth, of the 512 shark species on Earth, most are less than one metre long and only three – the great white, tiger and bull sharks – have ever been recorded as having attacked humans and causing fatalities. Currently, only five fatalities per year are caused by shark attacks – fewer than deaths from toasters, lightning strikes and ants! On the other hand, more than 100 million sharks are killed annually, 80 per cent of these purely for their fins to make shark fin soup. Fortunately, help is at hand, with numerous organisations around the world working hard to reduce these declines and re-educate the public about these amazing animals. These include the Shark Trust, Fin Fighters, the Manta Trust and Wise Oceans. Olivia is currently helping with a campaign to make Bristol shark fin soup-free and hopes that this will soon spread to the rest of the UK. Her final slide said it all: a picture of a human diver beside a shark, with the caption: “This is the most dangerous animal in the world. It is responsible for millions of deaths every year. By its side, a great white shark swims peacefully.” l Our next meeting is entitled: The Secret Cemetery, about the natural history of Smallcombe cemetery, a gem in Bath. Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society has been selected as one of three good causes in the running for grants of up to £4,000, up to £2,000 and £1,000 as part of Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme. KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society
This is a rare view, taken from a postcard dated 1904, of the old footpath from Avon Mill Lane to the Bristol-bound platform at Keynsham Station. The bridge over the Chew was washed away in the 1968 flood although the remains of the supports can still be seen in the park and the entrance to the footpath still exists next to the bridge over Avon Mill Lane. In the picture, the original signal box is just visible at the top of the slope.

Group launched for dads and their kids A new monthly Saturday morning group for dads will be launching in Keynsham on March 10 to give dads and their children the chance to spend time together, have fun and meet others. The new Who Let The Dads Out group will be held at St Francis Church Centre, Warwick Road from 10am to 11.30am every second Saturday of the month. There will be play equipment available as well as drinks and bacon rolls for the dads while they play with their children. “We are looking forward to welcoming dads to these mornings,” said organiser Martin Burton. “Dads often lose out in playing with their children as they grow up. It’s also an excuse for mums to get rid of the dads and children and have a quiet morning at home!” Who Let the Dads Out is a part of a national project. he popularity of the monthly walks organised by Keynsham Walkers are Welcome continues unabated with 34 participating in the last outing, including three more new walkers. This short, 2.5-mile, level walk, headed by Mike Stone, was held in fine walking weather – the forecast rain did not materialise. Meeting at the Memorial Park cafe, and using public transport, we joined up with other walkers at the Bird in Hand at Saltford. We headed along the eastern banks of the River Avon, passing through the hamlet of Kelston Mill, and on to the village of Kelston. Here we stopped at the Bath Cheese Company Factory cafe, where we were served by the friendly staff. There was also a chance to view the cheese-making process from the gallery. After, we made the short walk back to Saltford with another refreshment stop at the Bird. Once again everyone commented on the sociabilty of the walk, and went home happy

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult fiction
Everland by Rebecca Hunt Everland is an island close to the South Pole. We follow three men in 1913: Dinners, a shy young scientist; Millet-Bass, a strong sailor, and Napps at their head. Each of them keeps a neat diary of their discovery and hopes for the arrival of the ship that will bring them back home. A hundred years apart another expedition is held by Brix, Jess and Decker. This modern team starts to dramatically echo their predecessors. The book manages brilliantly to make us experience the mental challenge the characters face in the harsh polar environment. I felt excited about this adventure but I was happy to read it cosily at home. Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Library Assistant, Keynsham Library

Chocolate Wars by Deborah Cadbury There is a section upstairs in Keynsham Library dedicated to local history. There are some fascinating gems there and one of these is this book about the history of the big Quaker chocolate families: Rowntree, Fry and Cadbury. The book is written by a member of the Cadbury family, who remembers as a child being taken around the Birmingham chocolate factory by her uncle – chocolate heaven. By the 1920s, the Frys were so successful, they wanted to expand and decided to move out of their
building in Union Street in Bristol and they found a site just outside the city, by the River Avon with excellent rail links. They embarked on a huge building programme and named the factory Somerdale in Keynsham. The story begins when Richard Tapper Cadbury, a draper from Birmingham, sends his son to London to study a new tropical product – cocoa. Initially he was to sell it as a drink to combat the evils of alcohol, but soon ways were found to expand cocoa into the product that today is so popular. The author also explores the Cadburys’ Quaker roots and their determination to improve the lives of their workers. She brings the story up to date with the competition from Swiss and American companies and the eventual takeover by Kraft. The story is a fascinating one, and this book is rich in detail and very thought-provoking. How to Plant a Garden by Matt James As spring approaches it may now be the opportunity to go out into the garden and tackle those weeds and for some inspiring ideas try this beautifully illustrated book. It falls into eight simple chapters, starting with Getting to Grips with your Garden – which outlines what is the best planting for the particular soil in your garden, the orientation and the plants which will thrive in different aspects and how to maintain the existing plants. The next chapters are all about how to use plants to their best advantage; how to use
planting to gain privacy; and the use of themes like ferns or grasses and scented flowers. Finally, there are practical tips as well. This is an all-rounder gardening book with some good details on garden design and particularly useful if you have a blank canvas and are unsure how you would like your garden to develop.
DVD
Hidden Figures (PG) I watched this film a couple of months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It tells the story of a group of amazing AfricanAmerican women who contributed so much to the 1960s US space programme. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It tells the true story of Katherine Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. They were brilliant mathematicians, scientists and engineers in their own right who worked at NASA but faced gender and racial discrimination. However, they proved invaluable in getting the astronaut John Glenn launched into orbit. Headed by a great cast that includes Octavia Spencer and Kevin Costner, this is a truly inspiring film with great period detail. After watching the film I even searched the web and found out more about these extraordinary women and their work in later space programmes and early computers.
Young Adult Fiction
Nephilim (Orion Chronicles) by John and Carole Barrowman Many people will recognise the name John Barrowman from his
acting and musical theatre career but he has also teamed up with his sister to write a number of Young Adult books, including the Hollow Earth Trilogy and the Orion Chronicles. This is the second book in the Orion Chronicles. It features 17-year old Remy – a magician – who can change space and time with music. With his superpowered friends, Matt and Erin Calder, they must fight a dangerous battle to save humanity. Who can they trust: an irresponsible 17th-century artist; a heavy from Chicago or a “Nephilim” – a half angel/half human? As with all good adventure stories time is running out, action is fast-paced and heroes are made.

Comedian and writer Henry Normal is coming to The Space in Keynsham to share poetry and insights into life with his autistic son. My Zero Waste Journey
Ryvita’s customer care suggested I save up all the black plastic from their products and take it to friends who live in council areas that do recycle black plastic! Like anything new, it’s hard at first, but once you’ve found new ways of doing things it’s not that difficult. I now buy my milk in glass from the milkman. I have a local veg, fruit and meat box, and I use our local shops, which are great places to buy what I need with minimal packaging. I sometimes get things wrong, and there are items that I can’t currently find a way of buying without plastic packaging. But I’ll keep trying, looking for alternatives and emailing producers and retailers. Who knows, one day I may achieve my goal. In the meantime, you can drop your plastic milk bottle tops off at Keynsham Town Council for Keynsham in Bloom’s art project on the impact of plastic (visit http:// bit.ly/2FkLihg). I first heard about Zero Waste when I watched the film Trashed. What it showed me was so shocking that I decided, from then onwards, to try to live my life without generating any plastic waste. I realised quite quickly that this was completely impossible, so instead I decided to avoid any plastic that I couldn’t recycle and try to put as little rubbish in my black bin as possible. Even that hasn’t been easy. The biggest change has been to alter the way I think when shopping. Rather than just thinking about the item I need, I also think about the packaging it comes with, and what I’m going to do with the item when it is no longer useful to me. We’ve had some laughs along the way. I sent a machine back for repair (having debated long and hard about the economics of repair vs buying new) only for it to be returned in more packaging than you would believe possible. And

The grand affair that brought King Henry VII to Keynsham
Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society Jasper Tudor – Why King Henry VII visited Keynsham
At the end of the Keynsham Abbey talk at our December meeting, the questions concentrated on the speaker’s mention of the tomb of Jasper Tudor, so it might be helpful to shed just a little light on this important, though not wellknown, figure in our history and his connection with Keynsham. Born in 1431, the son of a Welsh noble, Owen Tudor, and Catherine of Valois, who had been married to Henry V, Jasper was half-brother to King Henry VI. He was a senior member of the royal family, with land and supporters in south and west Wales and on his 21st birthday was made Earl of Pembroke. When his elder brother Edmund died in 1456, leaving his young wife pregnant, Jasper took her to his home at Pembroke Castle and became guardian and mentor to the child, Henry. Throughout the turbulent period of the Wars of the

In 1474 the two were separated and for several years Jasper lived at the chateau at Josselin. Reunited with Henry he spent years plotting and influencing to advance the

certain lands in various parts of the country should provide an annual sum of £40 for four priests to sing perpetually in Keynsham Abbey for the wellbeing of his soul and those of his family. Eleven days later, on Boxing Day, he died. Keynsham connection So why did he choose Keynsham Abbey as his final resting place? The abbey was founded by William, 2nd Earl of Gloucester; so throughout its history the Hereditary Patron was the Earl of Gloucester or his direct descendant. Eventually the patronage passed to the Stafford family. At the demise of Henry Stafford his heir, Edward, was aged only six, too young to inherit. When Jasper married Katherine in 1485 he was therefore given the patronage of the abbey “in right of his wife”. One of the perks of this patronage was the right of burial in the abbey. It appears that Jasper was a religious man and it is clear from his will that he took all possible steps to give his soul a speedier passage to Heaven; burial at Keynsham was part of this. A grand send-off The funeral was a grand affair,
probably the biggest event Keynsham has ever seen. Documents relate that it was attended by King Henry VII and the Queen. At Kingswood, the cortege from Thornbury was met by the Mayor of Bristol and 2,000 men on horseback, all dressed in black gowns, who escorted it to Keynsham for the burial. Even allowing for some over-estimation of numbers, it is sobering to imagine a procession of hundreds of horsemen slowly winding their way along the muddy lane from Willsbridge, over the County Bridge and up the hill to the abbey. Despite his long life, there are no surviving portraits of Jasper Tudor, although he and his wife are commemorated in a stained glass window at Cardiff Castle. There are no definite remains from his tomb, although an image of how it may have looked has been created, left.

Almost 100 people, including some who had worked on the plane, heard Chris Bigg describe the development and history of Concorde at the society’s February meeting. This ambitious project was

their way up the Welsh coast and across England to meet and defeat Richard III’s army at the Battle of Bosworth. There is no documented mention of Jasper’s role at the battle but as the most experienced of Henry’s retinue it is likely that he played a major part in the planning. The new King rewarded Jasper with the Dukedom of Bedford, and he became one of the court’s leading noblemen. A few days later, Jasper married Katherine Woodville, widow of Henry Stafford, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, who had been executed for his part in a rebellion against Richard III. Katherine was a wealthy woman in her own right and her estates included the Manor of Thornbury, which is where she and Jasper spent much of their time in the later years of his life. The present Thornbury Castle was built as a home for her son Edward Stafford but it may well stand on the site of their previous house. It was at Thornbury, on December 15, 1495, that Jasper Tudor made his will. He specified that: “My body to be buried in the monastery of Our Lady at Keynsham…” and also that his first gown of cloth of gold be bequeathed to the abbey, and that

an engineering masterpiece but an economic failure, so although almost 60 aircraft were ordered by airlines across the world, in the end only 14 entered service, all with the flag carriers British Airways and Air France. Almost all the planes survive, including, of course, number 216, which is now the centrepiece of the Aerospace Bristol museum.

O
ne of the rules of Benedictine Monasticism was about stability – about how monks should stay in their original monastery rather than shop around for a more comfortable one! In the fast-moving world of today this principle is grossly undervalued and I believe we are the poorer for it. There seems to be a sort of built-in restlessness in our culture today, captured perfectly in the title of a book published a few years ago entitled We Are All In The Fast Lane Now. The dangers of living this way, however, are all too evident: it brings a shallowness, superficiality about the way we live – and work?

No time – or inclination even – to go deeper, build solid rather than superficial relationships; no time to reflect on the meaning and purpose of what we are doing and where our lives are going – and time to change direction if need be. Increasingly people are living individual lives which can become isolated lives if they are not working or have no particular community to relate to. The Government’s recent appointment of a Minister for Loneliness bears witness to this. The obvious answer or response to this is to intentionally seek to find a sense of community wherever we go. When we as a family arrived in Keynsham from South Africa 16 years ago we were very fortunate that, with my being
a vicar, we were immediately welcomed into a particular church community which helped us enormously in settling in, especially in a foreign country even though we spoke the same language (more or less!). But the problem goes deeper than new entry, however, as even existing groupings in the same town can become isolated from each other, or the community itself can become divided over various issues – Brexit, income inequality, generational issues to name but a few Faith and secular community groups alike have recognised these problems in their communities and are seeking to address them and in some cases have formed partnerships in tackling a particular
issue. This has certainly been our experience in Keynsham. Many people still remember the Churches Together-initiated, yearlong More to Life programme in 2008, which reached out widely into the whole of Keynsham. More recently Keynsham Action Network and the Foodbank have consciously adopted a partnership approach. This is now also happening across B&NES, with the council actively forming partnerships with Christian groups as they seek to maintain services in some areas. All these initiatives have taken time to emerge, as they involve building trusting relationships, which today is more difficult with people often suspicious of the motives of the other – and sometimes with good reason. But this has happened here in Keynsham and credit needs to be given to all. And as I will finally be moving off soon I wish you all every blessing as Keynsham continues to develop – and grow; and to thank you all, especially those we have got to know, for your support and hospitality.

We will be joining forces with thousands of people around the UK and taking part in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean. Our volunteers will be litter-picking in the railway station car park, woodland and community garden on Saturday, March 3, starting from 10am in the station car park. We are supporting Keynsham Wombles who also have a number of litter-picks taking place throughout Keynsham. It has also been encouraging to see that residents from the Meadows and Bilbie Green have already
been out and about litter-picking in their community and that they are organising further litterpicks.

Keynsham in Bloom’s Annual General Meeting will be taking place on Thursday, March 22, at 6.30pm in the hall. A general committee meeting will follow, and everyone is welcome to stay for this. Critical time for Ks’ Premier Division dream KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Fields The month of February saw Keynsham Town FC’s First Team continue their unbeaten run, which stretches back to the beginning of October, with two wins and two draws, writes our correspondent. They remain top of the Toolstation Western League Division One table, one point ahead of Westbury United, with Roman Glass St George a further two points adrift in third place. Corsham Town visited Crown Fields at the start of the month, and it appeared to be business as usual for the Ks when James Ollis put them ahead with a wonderful strike on 12 minutes. However, Corsham had other ideas and two defensive errors were ruthlessly punished to put them in front at halftime. Keynsham battered the visitors after the break, and although an Adey Harvey header on the hour brought them level, they couldn’t produce a winner as it ended 2-2. A bitterly cold Wednesday night saw a typically feisty local derby away to Oldland Abbotonians end in a 3-3 draw in a game that, from a neutral’s point of view, had everything – six well-taken goals, nine bookings and a red card which sparked a mass brawl and led to 12 minutes’ stoppage time! On a pudding of a pitch, Ollie Trevarthen put the hosts ahead on 33 minutes, capitalising on a defensive error by Keynsham. Ks forward Craig Wilson scored a superb equaliser from 25

Midsomer Norton Methodist Cricket Club has recently published an up-to-date history of the club, writes our correspondent, called Towards 70 Years of Methodist Cricket
Keynsham Town FC’s First Team – 2017/18 season went straight down the other end and equalised immediately. In an open game, chances were squandered at both ends, before Matt Brown put the Ks in front just before the break with a calm finish for his 23rd goal of the season. Keynsham were denied a third after a superb flowing move was finished off by James Ollis, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. However, with Ks keeper Matt Dunk in supreme form, they clung on to earn three more crucial points. Off the field, the club were pleased to announce the signing of Harley Purnell from Bristol Manor Farm. Manager John Allen said: “Harley has vast experience at Southern League level with Chippenham Town, Yate Town and Mangotsfield United. He has been a big part of Manor Farm’s recent success, helping them win the Toolstation Premier Division last season and start their Southern League campaign so well. It’s an exciting signing for the Ks at a critical stage of the season, and we are hoping that Harley’s experience and qualities help us in our push for promotion.” With the race for promotion now looking to be down to three clubs vying for the two promotion places, Keynsham
yards just after halftime, but Trevarthen scored two more to complete his hat trick and put Oldland 3-1 up midway through the second half. The Ks did not give up, though, and James Ollis pulled a goal back in the 74th minute with another cracking strike from 20 yards. A dreadful tackle on Ollis then saw a straight red card for the Oldland substitute and, after things calmed down, Matt Curnock made it 3-3 in the 98th minute with a great glancing header. Craig Wilson nearly won it for the Ks at the death, but his shot was held up in the mud; all in all it was a good point for the Ks. Sherborne Town were the next visitors to Crown Fields, and a scrappy game saw Keynsham run out 2-0 victors. With Sherborne fighting for their lives to avoid relegation, the first half was an even affair which saw few clear-cut chances. Adey Harvey eventually put the hosts in front just after halftime and Matt Brown’s alertness punished a defensive mix-up on 72 minutes to secure the points. A week later saw another home victory, as Keynsham overcame sixth-placed Cheddar 2-1. Kyle Box drilled a precise drive into the bottom corner in the 18th minute, but the visitors in the Midsomer Norton Area – Memories, Statistics, Reports and Miscellaneous, 1949-2017. From its origins in the former Redfield Road Methodist Christian Endeavour after the Second World War, the club is well known in the Mendips for playing the game in the right
spirit – and also for the teas! It moved from Saturday friendly fixtures to League Cricket in 2004, first in the Shrubbery Hotel Division 6, then to the North Somerset Saturday League in 2007 until all the teams were transferred to the Bristol and District in 2016. The
have 12 games left to secure their dream of getting back in the Premier Division for the first time in 12 years. Their unbeaten run now stands at 19 games, but one week in March could be pivotal in deciding the outcome, as the top three all play each other. KEYNSHAM TOWN LADIES FC February was a disappointing month for Keynsham Town Ladies, although at the time of writing they were still to host Larkhall Athletic in a league fixture on February 25, writes our correspondent. Their cup runs in national competitions both came to an end, and in the Somerset Cup they were awarded another walkover, therefore progressing to the final without actually playing a game! Defeats at the hands of Lewes and West Ham United rather illustrated the gulf in class between near-top in the South West Division and the upper reaches of the Southern Division, the next tier up. Town were quietly confident of a result at home to Lewes in the Women’s FA Cup Fifth Round and in fact the match remained goal-less until the 40th minute, when hesitancy from the home keeper allowed Lewes a chance they couldn’t miss. Keynsham were again at fault for goal two when Jade Radburn failed to clear, gifting the opposition an open goal. Lewes wrapped it up for 0-3 with a well-struck effort to give Hannah Christer no chance. The only player to emerge with any credit was right back Andreea Alexandru whose excellent challenges, sliding tackles, and covering for others’ mistakes kept the score down.

Cup misery for Town Ladies at the hands of the Hammers The following Sunday saw Keynsham bow out of the Women’s Premier League Plate at the Quarter Final stage when they were “hammered by the Hammers” 7-0, finding themselves five down at half time after 45 minutes against the wind and sleet. In the second half – when the weather brightened up – they restricted West Ham to a further two. They were then due to travel to Taunton-based Hamilton in the Somerset Senior Cup on February 18, but as was widely predicted, the Somerset League 2 side withdrew, which, given their league form, probably prevented them from conceding a cricket score! The Development side have only competed once in the month, before their trip to Torquay United on February 25, losing 3-1 to Middlezoy Rovers. After taking a 1-0 lead with another Rhianna Ben-Carew goal, they then fell behind to two longrange efforts, the second from fully 35 yards, a free kick over the defensive wall before dipping just under the crossbar out of Shawna Hannan’s reach. Shawna then conceded a penalty for 1-3, before a late Rhianna effort was just wide of the target. Season of quality bowling ahead The winter working party has been working hard on the clubhouse and outbuildings and the green keeper has been attending to the playing service, meaning that things are well on track for the start of the new season at Keynsham Bowling Club, writes our correspondent. With the size of the membership the number of games being planned has meant that two of the busiest people during close season have been the fixture secretaries, Joan Harvey and Tony Hunter. The season starts with an opening roll-up on Sunday, April 8, which is then followed by a series of friendly fixtures, both home and away. The ladies will be competing in the North Somerset League as in the past, but as a result of increased membership they will be fielding a team in the Mendip Triples
League, too. The men will have three teams in the Bristol and District League and also three in the Somerset League plus a team in the Bristol Triples League. In addition there will be a mixed team playing in the Somerset Mixed League. All of these fixtures will be “topped up” with friendly matches, both home and away, together with the club’s internal competitions. The quality of the green is widely recognised, as the club hosts fixtures for visiting players. The semi-finals of the Wedmore Plate and Turnbull Cup will take place in August, followed by a ladies’ county fixture between Somerset and Berkshire. At the start of September the County Competitions Finals Day will take place. Keynsham Memorial Park will certainly be witnessing some quality bowling this coming season.
