Community centre bid for fire station l From Page 1 community facilities in the centre of Keynsham. “When the fire station was put on the market unexpectedly last month, given its position between the library and the leisure centre, there were renewed calls that it be developed as a community facility rather than be acquired for commercial or residential development.” Alder King said it had been “inundated” with inquiries within days of the site being marketed, with a wide range of uses in mind. The town council hasn’t committed to spending any money on the scheme and plans to carry out a widespread consultation with residents in coming weeks on its proposals, including a one-off rise in the council tax precept to cover the costs. Dr Scott said: “A project of this magnitude obviously needs to be financed, so in March the town council agreed to apply

to the Secretary of State for approval to borrow from the Public Works Loan Board at a fixed interest rate for the lifetime of the loan up to 50 years. Interest rates are currently at their lowest for many years, so if the town council were going to borrow at any time for a capital project, now is the best time to do so. “Obviously, the town council has not committed itself to any expenditure at present – merely put itself in a position that should its offer prove attractive to the vendors then it could be in a position to proceed.” Suggestions from the public for the site have included a multi-purpose space for events and markets, a visitor centre, a heritage centre or museum, meeting rooms and an enterprise hub/hot desk facility for start-ups and community organisations. No one from Alder King was available for comment at the time of going to press.

‘Junction will be tackled this autumn’ Residents concerned about the safety of an increasingly busy junction in Keynsham have been told a long-term solution will be delivered by autumn. People living near the junction of Station Road and Chandos Road, which also provides access to the Somerdale site, contacted Keynshamvoice in March to raise their concerns that temporary barriers were still in place years after development of the housing estate had begun. They also called for Taylor Wimpey to fulfil promises for a pedestrian crossing to Keynsham Station and presented a petition to Bath and North East Somerset Council urging the local authority and developer to “work together to quickly improve the junction of Chandos Road and Station Road which we feel to be unsafe for pedestrians, motorists and other road users”. In response, the council has said a solution will be implemented in autumn this year

Petitioners at the junction of Chandos Road and Station Road while, in the meantime, temporary safety barriers have been installed at the entrance to the Somerdale site in a bid to slow traffic, which will be monitored. Ward councillor Charles Gerrish said: “The problems with this junction have been a longrunning challenge which I and fellow councillor Brian Simmons have been pressing council officers to resolve for many months, and so I am pleased there is a recognition that the original

junction design needs to be reviewed. “I also welcome the fact that the council has put a timescale on finding a permanent resolution, with council officers stating that they want to work with Taylor Wimpey to agree a design and enable work to commence by autumn this year. “I understand the concerns residents have and share their frustration in not finding a solution sooner, and Brian and I are

doing all we can to get this matter resolved. A separate meeting with residents of Priory Road has also been held with council officers to discuss the concerns they have over parking and other related matters.” Designs for the layout of the junction are now being redrawn as residents and council officers have raised concerns that the original plan for traffic lights, along with a light-controlled pedestrian crossing in Station Road, could affect traffic flow. Taylor Wimpey and the council are now working on an alternative design that would avoid the need for new planning consent and further delays to the scheme. Resident David Biddleston said: “I’m very pleased that the council have given us a start date and residents will certainly be holding them to that. It was good to receive the assurance that they do care about our safety although it has taken them over three years.”

Roman ‘villa’ may be three times bigger Keynsham’s Roman “villa” could be three times the size estimated by archaeologists in the 1920s. Bryn Walters, of the Association for Roman Archaeology, says a recent geophysical survey by Bath and Camerton Archaeological Association south of Spinney Close, near Durley Hill, turned up evidence of an unknown Roman building and a possible medieval structure. Furthermore, plans of the ruins drawn up by archaeologists in 1926 seemed to be “seriously out of alignment”, he wrote in a letter to Keynsham Town Council, with the spot where the Keynsham Library mosaic was found actually 20 metres away. Mr Walters’ team has been reassessing the 1926 finds beneath Keynsham Cemetery, with a dig in 2015 fuelling the theory that the site was not a villa at all but a very large public building. He said he hopes to be able to gain permission from the diocese to reopen a trench within the cemetery to continue investigations.

Residents: Speed bumps Don'tare miss fl causing ‘intolerable’ noise Residents are being forced to live with “intolerable” noise caused by speed bumps installed near their homes, a group of neighbours say. People living in St Ladoc Road, near the junction with St Anne’s Avenue, say they are suffering interrupted sleep and constant loud noise as vehicles hit the bumps at what they estimate is often more than twice the 20mph speed limit. To make matters worse, they say the road’s 7.5-tonne weight limit is being flouted every day by construction traffic heading to development sites in the south of the town. Roy Stokes said: “Since these [speed bumps] were installed the amount of noise generated by vehicles day and night has become intolerable. The main culprits are generally commercial

vehicles with items on board that crash as the bump is crossed. “In addition to this factor there is very little reduction in speed for cars or commercials.” Neighbour Pam Sales said lights rising falling as 0117and 9322293 vehicles drove over the bumps 24 Ellacombe Road, and shining into her windows meantLongwell it was “like Green, living opposite a lighthouse” and9BA she had had BS30 to buy blackout curtains. Police appeal for collision witnesses

Neighbours Pam Sales, Mervyn Williams, Roy Stokes, Pat Sidoli and Stanley Mogg in St Ladoc Road He added: “It would appear that the majority of noise observed at the speed tables is caused by HGV movements. Bath & North East Somerset Council will liaise with the police

over this issue as it appears that vehicles are contravening a 7.5-tonne weight restriction placed on St Ladoc Road, by not accessing premises within the restricted area.”

Additional 7.5-tonne weight restriction signs at the Charlton Road end of St Ladoc Road will be installed to further deter HGVs from using it, he added.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed a road traffic collision in Keynsham to come forward. A green VW Golf, with the registration number R121 DNC, was seen driving along Charlton Road and Woollard Lane at approximately 5.20am on Wednesday, April 5, before colliding with a wall on Queen Charlton Lane. The vehicle’s male driver was injured and required hospital treatment. As police officers were following the vehicle for a short time before the collision, a referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Avon and Somerset police say they need to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle before the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101 and quote crime reference number 5217074782.

Why should I neuter my pet?

N

eutering is the general term for the removal of the reproductive organs in cats, dogs and rabbits and is widely regarded as a routine procedure. The most obvious reasons to neuter your pet are to eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancies and reduce inappropriate sexual behaviour, but there are lots of health benefits too. Top five reasons to neuter your pet: 1. Spaying your female pet will stop her from coming into season and eliminates the possibility of unwanted and expensive pregnancies. 2. Neutering can greatly reduce testosterone-driven behaviour in males such as spraying or scent marking and straying from home. 3. Neutering your pet can help to prevent many life-threatening cancers and womb infections (e.g. pyometra) that can be debilitating, painful and costly. 4. Neutering helps fight pet overpopulation, which otherwise could lead to animals being

euthanased or suffer as strays. 5. Rabbits reproduce much faster than dogs and cats and from a much earlier age. Unspayed female rabbits also have a 95% chance of developing uterine cancer before the age of four years old. Surgical developments have meant that female bitch spays can now also be done via keyhole surgery. Keyhole spays are safer and less invasive; your pet will have much smaller wounds, less postoperative pain and discomfort, and a much quicker recovery. Highcroft Veterinary Hospital was one of the first practices in the UK to perform female bitch spays by keyhole surgery, providing the best possible care for pets, and putting us at the forefront of this pioneering surgical development. Overall, neutering can lead to a longer and better quality of life for your beloved companion. Book your pet in to be neutered before June 30, 2017 and you will receive 20% off! Contact Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 9867700 to find out more.

Festival launches appeal to bring full opera to the park

Organisers of Keynsham Music Festival have unveiled an ambitious plan for this summer’s event – staging a full opera in the Memorial Park for the first time. To pull it off, music lovers who’d like to see the show go ahead are being asked to help raise £3,000 to cover the cost of staging Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore by professional company Simply Opera from Cardiff. The show would be staged on Thursday, June 29, in the festival’s largest marquee, with fully covered seating for 300 people. A festival spokesperson said: “Opera in The Park has been an established and well supported event at the festival for some years now, but a full production has never been attempted. One reason, of course, is the expense.

Drivers predict frustration as entrance to store altered during one-way works

Motorists and bus users have been getting used to the new lie of the land in Keynsham town centre now the trial of a one-way system on the High Street is under way. What many weren’t expecting, however, was to find access to Tesco’s busy car park would be overhauled too. Bath and North East Somerset Council announced on April 28 that work would begin the following day on altering the entrance to the supermarket from Charlton Road. As of Tuesday, May 2, the junction is “left in and left out” only, stopping vehicles turning right onto Charlton Road when exiting the car park or right into the car park from Charlton Road. A council statement said: “The closeness of the entrance to the roundabout at the junction

of Charlton Road and Ashton Way means some motorists are unsure about who has right of way. This affects the operation of the junction. “To address this issue, the entrance to the supermarket will be made ‘left in’ and ‘left out’ from Charlton Road as shown on the diagram [right]. This measure will stop right-turning vehicles from interrupting the efficiency of the junction and help keep traffic flowing.” The other entrance to the supermarket on Bristol Road will remain unchanged. We posted the news to our Facebook page and people were quick to respond. Neil Baker criticised the lack of consultation and wrote: “So as you can’t turn right from Charlton Road onto the High Street this will make people who live on the Wellsway

side of Keynsham think twice about shopping in Tesco due to the longer route back from the shop. Also those who live up the other end of Charlton Road will have to take a longer diversion. Nice to see B&NES consulting the residents on this, not!” Anne Edmondson added: “So you'll have to come out and turn left, then turn left, then go all around the roundabout to get back to where you wanted to go! That means everyone wanting to go up [Charlton Road] will likely use the other exit, causing a tailback there.” Others suggested that closing off the entrance entirely or installing a double mini roundabout would be more effective. Meanwhile, as work continued on new road markings on the High Street and changes

to the junction with Bath Hill, some residents said they believed the one-way scheme would bring benefits. Writing on Facebook, Abi Loughran-Hacker said: “It feels so much safer crossing the road in the main High Street now.” Amy Hughes added: “Shame they didn’t go for it and try fully pedestrianised. I’m always walking up and down Charlton Road and no evidence of the forecast ‘traffic chaos’. It'll add a few minutes to my car journeys but that’s a sacrifice I'm more than happy to make if it makes things safer, less polluted and more pleasant when out on foot.” Others said the roadworks had raised concerns about the cost of reverting to two-way traffic should the trial prove unsuccessful. Sonya Lawton wrote: “With all these expensive

Church to marry same-sex couples A local church has become the first in the South West to offer to host same-sex weddings. Members of Upton Cheyney United Reformed Church voted by a large majority in 2016 to register the building as a venue for full marriage services for same-sex partners. Upton Cheyney Church Minister, the Revd Meryl White, said she would be personally willing to conduct the ceremonies at the church, and added: “All those wishing to be united in marriage with God’s blessing and in God’s love are welcome.” The vote followed the passing of a resolution at the United Reformed Church General Assembly (the denomination’s highest policy-making body) in July 2016, that allowed local

United Reformed churches to register for weddings of same-sex couples. Stuart Turner, church meeting chair, said: “We have always promoted Upton Cheyney United Reformed Church as a place of worship and welcome to all. “We are delighted to announce that we have recently been authorised for the conduct of same-sex marriage. “Not everyone will be comfortable with this. Town celebrates three ‘Good Citizens’

The Keynsham Good Citizen’s Award has been presented to not one but three residents this year in recognition of their contribution to the town. The honours, presented by Keynsham Town Council, were handed out by council chair Lisa O’Brien at the annual town meeting on April 27. Receiving a certificate and £100 each towards their chosen charities were Denise James, chair of Keynsham in Bloom, Scout leader Barrie Dunn and former town councillor and Keynsham Walkers are Welcome co-ordinator David Johnson. Introducing Denise, Councillor O’Brien said even if people didn’t know her they had all seen the impact she has had on the town as the “driving force” behind Keynsham in Bloom, steering the town towards gold in the South West in Bloom competition, engaging other community groups and energising people to get involved. Denise said: “Bloom has blossomed here in Keynsham and there are a lot of inspirational people on the committee bringing the community together. “Keynsham is going to look

And the award was in honour of his “loyalty to the young people of Keynsham”. Barrie said he had become involved with 1st Keynsham

Scouts 40 years ago with his own children, taking on the role of camp warden after the group sold its land at Ashton Way and bought 35 acres at Chelwood. He said: “At Keynsham Scouts we are there every night of the week offering children boundless opportunities, coming up with bright ideas for new activities we can offer to kids. Keynsham is a great place that has grown enormously and there is

everything you want here – and with so many voluntary groups there is an opportunity for everybody to do something in the community.” As a councillor, David Johnson was never slow in coming forward to help, said Councillor O’Brien, quickly getting involved in Keynsham Music Festival and then helping to lead the establishment of Keynsham Walkers are Welcome, which has become a “very successful and popular group” open to everyone. Collecting the award in David’s absence, Derek Butler read a statement from him in which he said he was “honoured, humbled and gobsmacked to read the letter because I enjoy everything I do”. Adding that Walkers are Welcome had now become an established part of the town’s social scene, he thanked the town council for its support and said: “It never ceases to amaze me the number of people willing to give up their time to organise events.” The Good Citizen’s Award has been presented each April since 2007 by Keynsham Town Council to residents nominated by members of the public.

Special visit from France to honour 40

The wait is almost over – it is now only eight weeks until Keynsham & District Twinning Association celebrates 40 years of twinning between Keynsham and Libourne, in France, writes the group. Our twinning committee has been busy over the past months organising a programme for our visitors, who will arrive on June 29 and stay for one week. We trust our friends from Libourne will be pleased with the proposed programme, which includes a number of activities the community can get involved in. Forty years of twinning between the two towns is something to be very proud of and original founding members have not been forgotten as they will be invited to local events. The twinning charter was signed between the then Wansdyke Council and Libourne and today Keynsham Town Council continues to support our town twinning, which is

Our twinning committee, in partnership with Keynsham Music Festival, has also arranged a Keynsham first! Everyone is invited to enjoy a dance in Keynsham Memorial Park with Thornbury Swing Band and vocalist Charlie Atterton on June 30. There will also be a raffle and bar available and twinning members hope to see many locals dancing their socks (and shoes) off to music covering the last 40 years! Help to make this a sell-out occasion, with tickets priced at £10pp available at keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk. Please come and celebrate with us, making it a night to remember! During their week in the UK, our guests from Libourne will also enjoy a celebratory

dinner at Grasmere Hotel, a boat trip, a visit to Chalfont Manor and Bradford-on-Avon, a trip to Bristol Botanical Gardens and free time to explore before a farewell skittles match on Wednesday, July 5. Keynsham & District Twinning organises exchanges between the two towns – fluent French is not needed, but staying in a host home is the perfect way to experience life in another country. Exchanges have been arranged between musicians, schools, sports teams, choirs, dancers, councillors and wine students. Work experience for young people has also been arranged. If you would like further information on Keynsham & District Twinning Association, look at our website www. keynshamtwinning.org or call Carole on 0117 986 5350. We would love to welcome you. Hundreds of music fans descended on Keynsham to snap up unusual vinyl releases and to celebrate Record Store Day. A queue formed outside Temple Street’s Longwell Records from 4am on April 22, with collectors and enthusiasts keen to get their hands on rarities such as a 12-inch record complete with handmade wooden cover by Wild Willy Barrett and even a pink-coloured copy of the Aqua single Barbie Girl. Owner Iain Aitchison said between 500 and 600 people visited the shop, with titles

from David Bowie, Prince and Motorhead the most popular purchases on the day. There was also live music at the shop from Maisie Aitchison, Natalie Holmes, Pix Encore, Steve Mercy, Priita and Ramblin Tyme. The shop also received some long-distance support from comedian Stephen Merchant, who tweeted a picture of himself wearing a Longwell Records T-shirt at his home in LA to mark Record Store Day, which involved more than 200 shops across the country.

Jenna raises £2,800 for teenager’s op

A Keynsham woman has raised £2,800 to help a complete stranger pay for life-changing spinal surgery in the US. Jenna Lane was so moved by the story of 15-year-old Lucie Clarke that she decided to organise a fundraising event at Somerdale Pavilion last month, with an auction and raffle. Lucie, from Cheltenham, has appeared on TV and in local and national newspapers because she and her family are racing against time to raise £150,000 so the teenager’s severe double scoliosis can be treated in America. The operation is no longer available in the UK and must be carried out before Lucie is skeletally mature – thought to

be just months away. Jenna, a full-time carer, said: “When I saw Lucie on the news, all I could think was that I wanted to help this person however I could. “As a single mum to three children, I would want someone to help me if I was to ever be in this position. “I used social media to send her mum a message explaining that I wanted to organise a fundraising event for her and soon got cracking with raising money!” She added: “It was a fantastic evening with entertainment from lively local singer Mitch Tucker, a disco, and an auction – in total we raised a fantastic £2,800.” Among the raffle prizes and items for auction donated by businesses was a luxury hamper from Taylor Wimpey. Danielle Heard, acting sales and marketing director, said: “The incredible kindness shown by Jenna in reaching out to Lucie is a fantastic example of the generous community spirit in Keynsham.” Find out more about Lucie’s

ON THE BEAT

‘ with PC James Evans

W

ith the Easter Holidays having come and gone and the weather getting better, we have had a rise in antisocial behaviour in the public areas of Keynsham. This has mainly been in Keynsham Memorial Park, but other places such as the sports centre on Temple Street and Ashton Way car park have been targeted too. If you see behaviour that you don’t think is appropriate then please either challenge it or contact the police to report it. We need to build an accurate picture of what is happening to get adequate resources in place to deal with the problems. We are going to up our patrols in the park so if you see an officer or PCSO, come up for a chat.

We are going to up our patrols in Keynsham Memorial Park so if you see an officer or police community support officer, come up for a chat

The neighbourhood policing team are going to start having beat surgeries again as we are aware that with the police desk moving from the One Stop Shop to the Police Centre on Ashmead Road it has become more difficult to speak to us. All of the details will be placed onto the Beat Pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website. The ones that are planned at present are at: l Waitrose, on May 10, from 10am to noon in the car park. l Waitrose, on June 23, from 10am to noon, in the foyer. l The Little Coffee Shop in Saltford on May 11 at 10am to 11am. We will also be looking to hold some beat surgeries around Wellsway School and in Compton

Dando and these will be advertised on the website as soon as they are arranged. We have received a number of complaints about both speeding and people failing to comply with the 7.5-tonne weight limit on certain roads. We are looking into the speeding and will be closely monitoring the area and dealing with offenders. The 7.5-tonne weight limit is mainly contravened by delivery drivers from out of the area attending the many large building sites we have at the moment. I am looking to enforce and educate the drivers about the correct route they should be using. After a nasty accident where two off-road bikes crashed head on into each other on land next to the

Hicks Gate roundabout at Durley Hill, we have taken measures to deal with people using this land in this manner. This is private property and has signage up explaining that there is no public access allowed. If we attend and locate people using the land we have powers to seize vehicles, which could then be destroyed. We will also be looking to serve Community Protection Warnings. What this means is that ultimately if breached this could result in arrest and a court hearing. We are hoping that this prevents the land being used in this way. We are also having problems with cars being driven in an antisocial manner and then being burnt out at the cut-through between Durley Hill and the A4. This is the access lane that the buses use to avoid the traffic lights at the Hicks Gate roundabout. If anyone sees any vehicle being driven in a manner that they deem not acceptable then please get a registration number and report it so we can follow this up, identify offenders and deal with them.

LETTERS

I can still see crash in my mind today The letter in the April issue of Keynshamvoice about the plane which crashed in Saltford station yard in 1941 brought back very vivid memories for me. I was about ten and living with my mother in the lower half of Uplands Road – my father was in the army – and we were in our dining room with a grandstand view across to Kelston. We heard this sudden deafening roar and as my mother pulled me away from the window we caught a glimpse of the doomed plane disappearing below the bottom of our garden. I remember the pause – probably only a couple of seconds but it seemed an eternity that day – before this huge ball of fire reached up, blotting out the

view. We could feel the heat from it, too. I think this event brought home to me more than anything that had happened previously of the horrors of war and it is an event I can see in mind to this day, as if it was yesterday. I think it is good to be reminded of the lives lost other than in the actual field of battle. M J de Jong Saltford

Name of Colston should be retained Edward Colston was born in Bristol in 1636 and died in 1721. It was widely acknowledged that much of his wealth came through the slave trade but, equally, that he donated considerable sums of money to schools and almshouses and his name is commemorated in the Bristol area by way of streets, schools and the Colston Bun. Approximately 150 years after his death, a concert/ entertainment hall was built in the heart of Bristol and named after him. Now we learn that the Bristol Music Trust, which was launched

May, 2017

in 2011, has unanimously decided that the name will change in 2020 when the hall is completely refurbished. Apparently the board of trustees feel that “Edward Colston does not represent the values of the Bristol Music Trust”. I understand that the trust comprises 11 active members but I am not sure how many of them are Bristolians! I acknowledge that slavery was an odious and terrible practice which demeaned human beings and was a part of our history that we should all regret. However, as well as being widespread for centuries prior to Colston, it was not illegal at his time. So we can regret it and wish it had not happened but Colston and others were not reviled in their own time. I am a Bristolian of 72 years, regularly attend the Colston Hall and feel passionately that the name should be retained. The trustees, I feel, have bowed to pressure from relatively small groups and a pop group who refuse to play the Colston Hall on account of their beliefs. The course of history has been

changed in one fell swoop and I find it unacceptable. I understand that, already, there is a petition with 2,000 signatures that support my views – tell me where I have to sign ! Ian Philpott Saltford

Talented musicians deserve our support Those of us who gathered in Keynsham Parish Church on a recent March evening were treated to a concert which contrasted the lively 20thcentury Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings by Francis Poulenc with the monumental German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, composed in the 19th century. Keynsham Orchestra members were joined by Chew Valley Choral Society and Maesbury Singers, together with organist Alison Howell and Esther Mallett (soprano) and Niall Hoskin (baritone). The conductor was Mark Gateshill. The first public performance of the piece by Poulenc was given

May, 2017 in June 1939 in Paris and its loud and quite violent opening movements seem to be very much a “sign of the times”. There was great benefit to the audience in being able to see the organ keyboard, which in St John’s is moveable. There is little doubt that classical music lovers, particularly those who care for choral works, have a special place for the Brahms Requiem and rightly so. It seems appropriate that such a work should be performed in a place of worship, particularly in a church having very good acoustic qualities. The two soloists gave real meaning to the music and its underlying text drawn from Luther's translation of the Bible and Apocrypha. I often feel that such works are in fact “acts of worship”. May I once again draw your readers’ attention to the fact that we in Keynsham have a talented group of musicians prepared, at considerable cost to themselves, to practise and perform for our pleasure. Let us give them all the support that they so richly deserve. Morris Powe

n YOUTH & EDUCATION

It’s more than a new floor – it’s our legacy

Raising £25,000 for new flooring at their well-used Scout HQ seemed like an enormous challenge that might take years. But just 12 months on, 1st Keynsham Scouts have taken their first steps on a brand new floor fit for generations of ‘Giants’ to come. Here the group says a big thank you to the community. Oak is known for its great strength and durability. In April 2016 Keynsham Scout group realised that their old HQ floor was running out of years, and the cost to replace it seemed to be out of reach at nearly £25,000. Scouts are known as people who make things happen so the Under the Feet of Giants appeal was launched in the hope that the money could be found, even if it took several years. Those who have been

following the Keynshamvoice updates since will have been aware that this appeal caught the attention of many people in our community – old Scouts who could remember their younger days and the fun they had, families where being part of the wider Scouting family has been passed down through the generations, parents who had never been in Scouting but wanted the opportunity for their children, local community

groups who have used the Scout HQ, charity groups that wanted to help, and of course all of the young people who are enjoying Scouting in Keynsham today. The response was amazing. So just 12 months later we are delighted to report that the target of £25,000 has just been reached and during April the Scout HQ hall was closed to allow a team to remove the old floor and lay a brand new oak floor. Thanks to the generous response and support of many within our community we have achieved the unthinkable in exactly one year. This is an unbelievable result – words fail us, thank you so much. So what does this mean for Scouting and the wider community in Keynsham? The experts for flooring and building have indicated that both the Scout HQ and the floor should last for a minimum of 50 years but probably as much as 100 years. What a legacy for the

future generations. This means that both Scouting and other community activities should be able to take place for the foreseeable future. Keynsham Scouts have a history of leaving legacies for the future. In the 1930s, a Scout leader of the day left the group the land at Ashton Way and a tin HQ. In the 1950s they built a brick Scout HQ, and in the 1970s part of that land was sold to form the Ashton Way car park. More importantly the money was used to purchase a 30acre campsite at Chelwood just down the road. In the 1990s the HQ was doubled in size and improved and now the 2010s have seen a stores extension and, most importantly, the new floor. We guess the question some might ask is what will the 2030s bring? There is no grand opening but if you would like to see the floor, pop in when someone is about and take a look.

n YOUTH & EDUCATION Trust to run town’s new primary school

Young bakers rally to help rainforests

Children at a Keynsham primary school have raised enough money to protect four acres of land – on the other side of the world. Year 4 pupils at St John’s CEVC Primary School were visited by members of Bath-based charity Rainforest Concern, who told them about the destruction of the forests across South America and about the organisation’s conservation projects. Inspired by the talk, the children decided to organise a cake sale, with the help of teacher Mrs Singleton and teaching assistant Mrs Yeoman, to raise £50 to sponsor an acre of rainforest. The pupils made cakes at school and at home and set up a stall one day after school. The cakes were snapped up and the pupils were delighted when the final tally came in at £220 – enough to sponsor four acres. Children and parents said it had been a fabulous day and were very proud of their achievement.

St John’s Primary pupils enjoy a brisk trade at their cake sale in aid of Rainforest Concern

A new primary school is due to open in east Keynsham next year, run by the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust. Bishop Hancock CE Primary School, named after the Bishop of Bath & Wells, will open in September 2018, offer 60 places a year and will be part of a new housing development planned for the area. Wellsway MAT, which runs seven academies in Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire, was named the successful bidder by the Department for Education. Wellsway MAT chief executive Andrea Arlidge said: “Bishop Hancock CE Primary School will work closely with our existing academies in Keynsham and Saltford and be a very welcome addition to our family of schools. Having successfully opened two free schools, in Keynsham and in Bath, we look forward to working with the developers and the community on this exciting new project.”

This month’s picture is a rather poor quality photograph looking down Charlton Road and taken about 1900 – before the road was widened. On the left are the pair of Milward Almshouses, near the junction with Westbourne Avenue. These were built in 1885 by Louisa Parker, in memory of her brother Alfred Milward, who died of tuberculosis at a relatively early age.

Fitness club going strong five years on A club that gives adults with learning disabilities the chance to take part in regular, fun exercise sessions is going from strength to strength after five years. Members of Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s Fitness for All Club celebrated the anniversary last month by inviting parents and carers to join them for cake, fruit and refreshments. The weekly class has 25 members aged from 16 to 65, with a range of learning disabilities and some with physical disabilities, who all enjoy exercise with an emphasis on fun. Each week there is a warm-up to pop music, team games, multi sports, friendly competitions and activities, from aerobics to obstacle courses, circuits to Zumba.

The club has until now been run by inclusive sports and fitness instructor Nick Dewfall, who has now stepped down from the role, so the event was also a fond farewell to him. A Keynsham Mencap spokesperson said: “The adults that take part in the weekly club are encouraged to be more active and reach small goals that are personal and achievable for them. The members develop their physical fitness and well being as well as their confidence and overall health. “Educating the members on the importance of looking after themselves physically is an incredibly important part of the charity’s ethos while making it fun and engaging. The nature of some of their disabilities can often cause members to face certain challenges

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Bike trail and pollinator project The pollinating insects that are so important to our gardens are getting a helping hand from Keynsham in Bloom volunteers, while the first decorated bikes are appearing around the town. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James tells us more. The Great Bike Trail has got off to a brilliant start, with three floral decorated bikes already on show in Keynsham. Simply Carpets was the first of our sponsors to display its

two bikes and they have done a great job of planting them up. One of the bikes was planted up to celebrate the launch of Kind Keynsham and was on display for the launch event on Monday, April 24, at Somerdale Pavilion. It is also in the colours of Somerdale Souls social group, who will now be looking after it. The third bike has been planted up by resident Claire Pollock with a very quirky flower pot theme. A bike trail map is being produced and will be available to purchase for 20p, via the town council offices at 15-17 Temple Street. The trail will run from June 9 to September 30.

Get Keynsham Buzzing

This is one of our latest projects aimed at raising the awareness of the importance of attracting pollinators to our gardens. Keynsham in Bloom is working

Getting ready for this summer’s Great Bike Trail in partnership with Avon Wildlife Trust to create an area that will attract these vital insects year round. The group has sowed perennial wildflower seeds, which will form part of the local B-lines project, which joins up habitats that pollinators can thrive in. We want to encourage residents to think more seriously about what they plant in their gardens and get them to consider attracting pollinating insects.

The small triangle of land adjacent to the junction of Manor Road and the Wellsway has been chosen to launch this project. Many readers may remember this area being planted up with wildflower displays a few years back by members of Transition Keynsham. Some of the existing wildflower plants have been incorporated into the new scheme. The seeds should be in flower later this year and will provide a much-needed source of pollinator food for future years.

Children’s Colouring Competition

At the time of writing this article more than 42 entries have been received for our Children’s Colouring Competition. Keynsham in Bloom committee members will be choosing winners and runners-up at their meeting on May 3. This is always a difficult task as our colouring competitions always attract a very high standard of entries. Winners and runners-up will be presented with their certificates and prizes at the 1st Keynsham Scouts’ annual

plant sale on Saturday, May 13. Committee members will be present at our stall, so do come along and say hello and give the children a big round of applause for their wonderful efforts. The plant sale is also one of the Scouts’ main fundraising events of the year.

South West in Bloom Judging Day Our regional judging day will be taking place on Friday, July 14, and we will be showcasing Keynsham to returning judge Richard Taylor and Bob Sweet. Our bloom calendar is going to be very busy over the next few weeks preparing our entry.

Arts festival brings author double bill to The Space Bath will be welcoming guests from the worlds of literature and music over 10 days in May when the Bath Festival returns to the city. Keynsham is joining in with a double bill at The Space on Saturday, May 27, featuring bestselling author Laura Barnett and mindfulness expert Linda Blair. Laura, who wrote the hit novel Versions of Us, will be talking from 2-3pm about her new book Greatest Hits, the story of fictional 1970s rock star Cass Wheeler, who mysteriously retired at the height of her fame. The novel finds her two decades on picking out tracks for a very personal greatest hits album, with each song starting a chapter, eventually revealing the crisis that forced her to flee her life in the Seventies.

Laura Barnett, far left, and Linda Blair Following Laura’s talk, Linda Blair will lead a workshop and talk based on her book The Key to Calm, starting with a look at what mindfulness practice is meant to be, followed by a short practice. Her talk aims to help participants understand themselves better, make the most of their personality traits, capitalise on the effects of their birth order and use their creative passions. The workshop also

aims to show how to plan ahead, declutter and simplify your life, and to teach people how to say no to unwanted requests. Tickets are available now from Bath Box Office on 01225 463362 or online at http:// bathboxoffice.org.uk/. The Bath Festival runs from May 19-28 with a range of talks and performances taking place at venues around the city – find out more and book at http:// bathboxoffice.org.uk/.

Grand plant sale to support hospice A plant sale in Keynsham town centre will not only help residents brighten up their gardens for summer but also support a very worthy cause. The Rotary Club of Keynsham is holding a Grand Spring Plant Fair at the Fear Hall, in the High Street, on Saturday, May 20. Last year’s sale raised £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK and proceeds this year will go to Children’s Hospice South West and other Rotary causes. A wide variety of plants will be available, and visitors can also enjoy coffee, cake and biscuits and browse a book stall. The sale starts at 10am and entry is free. The Rotary Club thanks Sheila’s Plants, in Frome, Broadleaze Nurseries, in Keynsham and Andrews Property Group, Keynsham, for supporting the fair. Event marks start of Kind Town campaign Music got the first ever Keynsham Kindness Day off to a cheery start, with pupils from St Keyna Primary School performing the Kindness Song they sing every day at school. Hosted by volunteers from Keynsham Action Network (KAN), the event brought together local groups and individuals to celebrate and encourage acts of kindness as a way of bringing the community closer together. Inspired by national and international friendship and kindness initiatives, the event also heard from kindness campaigners based in London and the US. Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset councillor Alan Hale and chairman of Keynsham Town Council Lisa O’Brien launched the project’s first initiative – two bright yellow beanbag “kindness couches”, which will tour venues in the town and surrounding areas to encourage people to sit together and chat.

Pupils from St Keyna School performed at Kindness Day, far left; councillors Alan Hale and Lisa O’Brien with the kindness couches, left Fourteen-year-old naturalist Mya-Rose Craig, also known as Bridgirl, launched the project’s wristbands with the slogan #kindness_connects, which the group hopes will travel far and wide through acts of kindness, which can be shared using the hashtag on social media. The event had a wide variety of activities to suit all ages, including a Kindness Café run by Londoner Harpal Dhatt, interactive drama, art, pamper sessions, singing with the Goldies, a discussion on teen bullying and

information from Dementia Action Alliance and the Samaritans. It also featured videos by Leon Logothetis, author of Kindness Diaries, and Orly Wahba, founder of Life Vest Inside. But the real star was Daisy the dog from animal welfare charity Heart! A KAN spokesperson said another day was being planned for October and added: “The event was hugely well received and covered on local TV and radio, as well as on Radio Cornwall in

the evening. KAN hope to hold further events in the coming months and that other people will be inspired to spread the kindness on an everyday basis to make Keynsham the first ‘Kind Town’.” People can keep up to date and share stories of kindness on Twitter @keynshamaction and on Facebook at www.facebook. com/kindkeynsham. The launch event was supported by funding from the Quartet Community Fund and hosted by Aquaterra at Somerdale Pavilion.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Photo courtesy of Clapton-in-Gordano Parish Council

Grand houses of the Gordano Valley

The last meeting of the society’s 2016/17 talks programme was an illustrated talk by Sandy Tebbutt, Portishead historian and author. Her subject was the “The Grand Houses of the Gordano Valley”, which covered the manor houses and more recent large properties in Portishead and nearby. Before its housing boom of the last 20 years, Portishead was of similar size to Keynsham but it has had a very different history. It was surprising to learn that one of the major landowners was Bristol City Council and among its holdings in the town were several farms on the High Street; the last of these was working until 2011. Among the houses Sandy described were Courthouse Farm, which had its origins in the Tudor period and was once a manor house, the Grange with an early roof structure showing its medieval origins, and the Victorian Gothic Rectory, which was built around an earlier building that was unknown before demolition was under way in the 1960s. She gave a detailed account of how Naish House, built to have fine views over Clapton-in-Gordano and Portishead, was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1902, to be replaced by a relatively uninspiring building. The talk proved an enjoyable tour of a range of properties, some surviving and some not, and gave the audience an insight into the history of Portishead, a Somerset town that is now often regarded as merely a dormitory for Bristol.

A wheelwright fitting an iron tyre rim

The Keynsham wheelwright

A hundred years ago Keynsham, like all such small towns, would have been self-sufficient in many respects, with local craftsmen

making and maintaining many of life’s essentials. One such person was the wheelwright. The following account is based on a piece by Mr W Sherer published in the society’s

journal in 1995 and describes life in about 1920. Up to 1925, when Keynsham had a population of about 3,000, horsepower was widely used on local farms and by tradesmen delivering their goods around the surrounding area. They used various types of wagons, carts and traps, which all needed maintenance and repairs, as cars and vans do today. The iron tyres around the rims of the wheels needed renewing from time to time and broken shafts were a common experience. The writer’s father, Mr H W Sherer, owned three horses, two carts and a trap. He used to take his carts to be repaired by the suitably named Mr Gallop, whose open yard was next to the New Inn, and adjacent to the village pound, where stray animals were kept. Mr Gallop was a good friend of the blacksmith whose forge was just across the lane at the top of Bath Hill. The forge was used to heat the iron tyres, although the wheelwright had his own heavy hammers and anvil. Mr Gallop was a friendly gentleman and a real artist at his trade, well-known among the local horse fraternity. Of medium build, he had a ginger beard and along with his brown overalls always wore a bowler hat – used by many working men as they were waterproof. He lived on the Bristol Road, in one of the row of small cottages opposite and above St Dunstan’s Catholic Church, and is believed to have died about 1925. l Thanks to Market Lavington Museum for the image of the wheelwright. Vintage posters are latest arrival at station

As passengers arrive and depart Keynsham Station they will be able to enjoy changing displays of artwork brightening Platform 1. A set of vintage railway posters are the first to be unveiled along the ramp as part of a project led by Keynsham Town Council’s Arts Joint Committee. Station manager Todd Graham was joined by Keynsham Town Council chairman Lisa O’Brien, Arts Joint Committee member Ric Davison, deputy town clerk Dawn Drury and David Potts of On The Spot Signs, which installed the frames. The project was funded by a £5,000 grant from Great Western Railway and match funding from the town council. The displays will be changed every few months, with plans for artwork from Keynsham clocktower to be featured next.

Vintage railway posters are unveiled at Keynsham Station as the first themed art display

GARDENING TIPS In the garden

T

he deadheading of the spring flowers should be complete by now, and the mess of remaining leaves will trouble us for a while. But patience will be rewarded by a good display next spring. The grass is growing well despite the lack of rain. The grass still has a lot of moisture in it and I am still cutting on a fairly high setting. The mower is running well thanks to a good service. It starts

On the plot

T

he cold and very dry April has done little to help with plant growth. Watering at this time of year doesn’t seem quite right and the only benefit to the gardener is that the growth of weeds and appearance of slugs and snails has been put on hold. Even if rain does come new plants and sowings will need regular watering and hopefully there will be an improvement in the weather in May. The dry weather has allowed me to catch up with the digging and my plot is now ready for growing vegetables. The seeds sowed under cloches have

on first pull and cuts leaving a smart finish. Our wild patch was moved last autumn and looks quite settled. To my surprise there are signs of some new plants (or weeds, if you insist), which have managed to self seed. I do not know what they are as yet but I will wait patiently until they develop. I do know that there are two new cowslips. We have been watching, during the last two months, the building of a large nest in the top of a sycamore tree. There has been

much coming and going with long twigs and foliage and a great bustle around the nest. We thought that the pair were jackdaws and another opinion was rooks. But, having seen the birds in flight, we think that they are crows. We can see the distinctive fingers on the ends of their wings The wisteria is in full bloom after a hard cutback and the clematis are also looking good. Our little C. freckles is now resting after some very pretty flowers. We have split a few perennial plants and

look forward to them developing into good plants. We also have a new arrival, a self-seed which has been identified as Euphorbia polyphorma. With very bright yellow flowers, it is quite welcome in the bed. Hellebores have completed their flowering and the stems can be cut down. To stop them seeding take out all the flower stems, and also clear any poor quality leaves. Sweep around any hard standing, look out for those weeds and enjoy some fine weather!

germinated and there is now strong green growth on the onions and shallots, but no signs yet from the potatoes planted earlier. At home in a heated greenhouse the tomatoes, peppers and aubergines are progressing well and by the time this article goes to press I will putting the beans, courgettes, squash and pumpkins in cold frames to gradually harden them off. Most of these will not be planted out until the middle/ latter part of May and this is where my use of clear plastic bottles or containers comes into play. These tender plants will need protection until the risk of frost has gone. I cut the bottom off each bottle and

remove the cap then place these miniature greenhouses over the plants. The bigger the bottle or container is the better as this will allow for some growth but there must be a ventilation hole(s) at the top. Secure the base by slightly burying it in the soil to avoid them being blown over. In addition to frost protection they offer some moisture retention and are a handy deterrent to slugs and snails. One note of caution, if the weather gets really hot and sunny then there is a risk of scorching the tender leaves, so keep an eye on this and remember to water the plants regularly. By the end of May it should be safe to remove the

containers to allow the plants to grow on. I avoid using slug pellets anywhere in the garden as they kill the natural predators as well as the pest but I will admit to the risk of losing some plants. One essential tool for the plot is a hoe, which I use EVERY time I visit mine throughout the growing season. It takes a few minutes to hoe between the plants and if you do this frequently then you avoid the weeds taking over. If you are reading this and have yet to get started, don’t worry as there is still plenty of time – but don’t delay for long. Remember, nature has a cunning way of naturally catching up.

A May Day Carol Gather in the May, gather in the May, Cast a clout for May be out, And blow your cares away. Gather in the May, gather in the May, Let’s dance and sing to greet the spring, And Gather in the May. The sap is rising in the wood, The blossom’s on tree, The signs of spring are all around, For everyone to see. The birds are building their fine nests, And singing songs so gay, So let’s join in the chorus, As we gather in the May. Chorus Now Easter’s past, the icy blast Is now no longer here, And all around a kinder world Is starting to appear. Our hearts are feeling lighter As we step along the way.

STORAGE

So let’s all raise our voices, As we gather in the May. Chorus Our pole is draped and ready, For the starting of the dance, When every lusty lad and maid, Is looking for a chance. So join the fiddler in the field, And trip the livelong day, And sing our praise to heaven, As we gather in the May. Gather in the May, gather in the May,

Cast a clout for May be out, And blow your cares away. Gather in the May, gather in the May, Let’s dance and sing to greet the spring, And Gather in the May. George Liddell

Is your garden family-friendly?

I

t’s May – the swallows and house martins are back in our skies, and the aerial bombers, swifts, will soon be here after their mammoth migration journey. It reminds us that our bird breeding season is in full swing. By now, you might have blue tits occupying your nestbox, pigeons brooding in a nearby tree, mallard ducklings on your garden pond or a robin making itself at home in a garden shed! With all these mouths to feed, parent birds have a pretty busy time of it. Usually, both the male and female will expend a great deal of energy flying to and from the nest. One blue tit chick will happily finish off 100 caterpillars a day, so with ten in a nest, that’s a heck of a lot of caterpillars every day – a huge grocery shop! And there are ways we can help the new life emerging around us.

The right food While birds will mainly be on the look-out for insects and grubs to feed their brood, they will also take food we put out. We’ve just got to make sure it’s the right kind. At this time of year, we'd advise live or dried mealworms, buggy suet nibbles and sunflower hearts. Avoid leaving choking hazards like whole peanuts on bird tables, and remember not to put out too much at one time or it may go stale. Keep it clean To prevent birds picking up and passing on diseases to their young, try to clean your feeders every two weeks. Make a splash It’s also helpful

to leave out fresh water, especially on hotter days. Again, make sure water dishes are cleaned and refilled regularly. Feathering the nest Many birds will still be building their nests so leave out natural nesting material like human hair from your hairbrush, pet fur or scraps of wool (not the artificial stuff, though). Tie bundles of it up with string and deposit it around the garden. Lay down your loppers Try not to do too much intensive pruning of your hedges, ivy and shrubbery at this time of year, when birds may be nesting unseen beneath the foliage and relying on it for cover.

That done, and you should have a garden bursting with new life before long! Don’t intervene! It is normal to find young birds sitting on the ground or hopping around. Young birds can leave the nest before they are able to fly but that does not mean they have been abandoned or are in danger, unless your moggie is on the prowl! If the bird is in a dangerous location, move it a short distance to a safer place and check it regularly to see if one of the parents is returning with food. If the bird is unfeathered, appears healthy and a nest is nearby it may have fallen out by accident. In which case return the bird to the nest. If it is unhealthy it is possible the parent has ejected the bird to concentrate on other healthier chicks. If you can’t find a nest the only other option is to pass the bird on to an expert rehabilitation centre as soon as possible. Try www.rspca.org.uk or find an independent local rescue centre at www.helpwildlife.co.uk

Mum with fibromyalgia battles weight with challenges and her ‘Big Bird’ blog

A Keynsham mum has set out to shed six stone with a number of fitness challenges despite suffering from chronic pain all over her body – and is charting her journey on the internet. Michaela Hall, a 35-year-old mother of two, has set herself three physical challenges for 2017, raising funds as she goes to benefit three good causes. The first is to walk the length of a marathon in May, raising money for the British Heart Foundation through sponsorship, building up to the Bristol Race for Life in July for Cancer Research and the Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society in September. Making things tougher is the fact that Michaela – who weighs 17 stone 11lbs – suffers from fibromyalgia, a condition that causes chronic pain all over her body and has made it difficult for

thing for me then I will do it for something else with a sponsored slim!” Using social media, Michaela is hoping to gain support from both the online community and her community in Keynsham and has even featured on Radio Bristol in a “nerve-wracking” interview. She said: “It’s all well and good when you work and know lots of people who can support you and sponsor you but as a stay-at-home mum who lives under her rock, I may struggle for sponsors and support. So that’s how Big Bird Page was born – the power of social media!” To find out more about Michaela’s challenge and to follow her progress, visit Big Birds Battle on Facebook. To sponsor her May marathon, go to https://mymarathon17. everydayhero.com/uk/ BigBirdsBattlemarathon

Michaela Hall is keeping an online diary of her progress as she loses weight and raises money for charities her to exercise and control her weight. Despite this, she is training with CW Fitness Solutions and heads out for regular walks in the countryside – wearing a personalised “Big Bird” T-shirt provided by KITco. To keep her motivated as she builds up her fitness and sticks to a healthy diet, she is keeping an online diary called Big Bird’s Battle on Facebook, posting regular entries

and videos about her progress. Explaining why she set herself the challenge, Michaela said: “Every year I do a ‘something’ for charity, normally a sponsored walk, and choose a different charity each year. I always push myself and always succeed. “Yet when it comes to my own health? I try dieting, exercising etc. and nothing ever sticks. So while thinking about this, it hit me that if I can’t do the right

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non-Fiction

Reading Allowed: True Stories and Curious Incidents at a Provisional Library by Chris Paling This is a marvellous book that I finished reading over a weekend. The author, an ex-BBC journalist, has just started a job in his local library and each short section describes his work over a year and the wonderful customers that he meets on a daily basis. So you will hear about the homeless men like Brewer who fall asleep in the library alcoves; the group of adults with learning difficulties who ask loads of questions; the lonely who explain their life history, knowing this will be their only conversation that day; the young families who bring laughter and tears into the children’s section and the daily patrol of the caretaker looking out for thieves, blocked toilets and someone cycling inside the library! Alongside these stories, the author also explains the history of libraries from the Greeks to the great Victorian buildings and the birth of the Dewey system. This is a delightful, very funny, at times surreal and yet poignant book, highlighting the importance of a library in any community.

Adult Fiction

Fresh Hell by Rachel Johnson This is the third book in Rachel

Johnson’s Notting Hell series concerning friends Mimi and Clare. Following a “rest” from Notting Hill, W11 amid the beauty of Dorset, Mimi has decided to return to the city. However, on her return she has found that all her friends have become – impossibly – even richer, thinner and younger than before and their houses are becoming subterranean with huge basement conversions. However, Mimi has to restart her journalist career and her family appear to have stopped talking to her – well only via WhatsApp, really. Then, most dangerously, Mimi seems to have fallen for someone and it is not her husband. A good, witty read that looks at the new social mores around wealthy Notting Hill.

Young Adult Fiction

Sun Kissed by Jenny McLachlan as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Kat is a 15-year-old girl from Brighton and she is enjoying her world, her friends, her love for clothes, make-up and fashion. Her bad behaviour at home

pushes her parents to make a tough decision: they are going to send her for a month in Sweden to live with her hippy auntie. We follow her survival through this month of exile. This book was really refreshing, it shows well a teenage girl and her expectations but also her optimism – she doesn’t let herself down for long. I went from surprise to surprise and started to giggle enough to say you should give it a go!

Children’s Fiction

Calum’s Hard Knock by Danny Scott A book for all those footie crazies out there. Caleytown FC are up against some tough opponents but perhaps the main obstacle is the team themselves – they are just not working together. Coach McKlop has had enough and the team either have to complete a muddy day of military training or there is no team – eek! Can Calum and his friends pull together and score the winning goal? Read on and find out. A good, fun read for five- to 10-year-old children and there are five more books in this series to look out for.

Children’s Non-Fiction

Mad About Football by Judith Henegan This is one of the library’s new nonfiction books aimed at children, a

great subject book with punchy information – all to inspire reluctant readers. So whether you’re new to football or looking to develop your skills, this book will tell you everything you need – from on-the-pitch advice, defending and goalkeeping to fouls and free kicks! There is also a section on the World Cup and UEFA Champions League. The book finishes with a quick quiz to test your footie knowledge!

Lucy, 12: ‘You could see my heart pounding through my clothes’ Spire Bristol Hospital and consultant cardiologist Dr Mark Walsh came to the aid of 12-yearold Lucy Blanchard where others couldn’t. As a result of her Type 1 diabetes, Lucy suffered a hypoglycaemic episode, falling unconscious and suffering several seizures. It was not until this occurred that the Yorkshire-based family noticed something wasn’t quite right with Lucy’s heart. Considering the resting heart rate of a regular 12-year-old is usually around 60-100 beats per minute (bpm) Lucy’s heart was beating at an exceptional rate. She was experiencing heart palpitations up to four times faster, reaching 250-280bpm. Lucy explained how she felt during this. “It made me feel anxious, faint, dizzy and sick,” she said. “You could see my heart pounding through my clothes.” Naturally concerned, Lucy’s parents turned to the diabetic care team, based in Leeds, who informed them that it was just a result of the adrenaline. However, these episodes of increased heart rate continued for a couple of weeks, causing Lucy to feel rather unwell. Parents Danny and Caroline took their daughter to see a doctor at their local medical practice. It was here the doctor immediately called for emergency services to rush Lucy to the nearest accident and emergency unit. Then diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)

Lucy Blanchard with dad Danny and mum Caroline they planned to refer her to a paediatric cardiologist on the NHS to determine the cause. However, covered by their medical insurance, the family decided to arrange a private appointment at Nuffield Hospital, Leeds. It was there that consultant Dr Thompson performed a number of scans and tests to reveal that Lucy had a condition called Wolff-Parkinson White syndrome (WPW). WPW is caused by an extra electrical connection in the heart. It is a congenital heart defect where symptoms may not develop until later in life. Many cases are usually diagnosed in otherwise healthy adults aged between 20 and 40. “My condition was making me feel quite left out when I couldn’t join in with PE and sport at school,” said Lucy. Despite being diagnosed at Nuffield Hospital, the family were informed that they did not have the expertise or specialist facilities to

perform the correcting procedure that Lucy required. The only place in the region equipped to perform this procedure was Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). “We grew more and more anxious as the weeks went on. Despite her medication of beta blockers our daughter suffered another episode of SVT, which resulted in another agonising trip to A&E,” explained Caroline, Lucy’s mother. Days and weeks passed and the parents’ worries and the stress of Lucy’s condition only grew and after two cancelled dates for the procedure at the LGI they began to look elsewhere. “We hadn’t realised how difficult it was going to prove to be to find somewhere to help. I lost count of how many private hospitals I contacted around the country, just to be informed they didn’t have the facilities to perform the procedure,” said Danny, Lucy’s father.

“I was determined not to see my daughter suffer anymore and it was then I found Spire Bristol Hospital. I was quite surprised to speak to Dr Mark Walsh (consultant cardiologist) directly and he immediately reassured me that he would be able to help us.” Caroline explains their experience of Spire Bristol Hospital. “We were offered to view the hospital before our visit but politely declined due to the distance of travel. When we first arrived it was astonishing. Lucy thought it seemed more like a hotel than a hospital. She was allocated her own room and nurse, who I must say was really nice and friendly. “When Lucy went down to theatre we were kept up to date with what was happening and how it was going. On completion of the ablation, Dr Walsh had a chat with us and gave us all a full brief of how and where they had operated – to both mine and my husband’s relief he informed us it was a great success.” Lucy has recovered well and has had no more symptoms since the ablation. Spire Bristol Hospital is a national Centre of Excellence for cardiac and cardiology services and is one of only a few private facilities which can offer paediatric treatments to children. Should you require any more information or would like to book a consultation with a consultant, then you can call their patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email info@ spirebristol.com

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

A spring in our step after successful festival Clear blue skies, perfect walking weather, greeted all the walkers who participated in this year’s Keynsham Walking Festival over the second weekend in April. With nine varied walks to choose from the organisers were very pleased with the turn-out, which was marginally up on last year’s inaugural event. We were pleased to welcome back four organisations whose members arranged walks for the event – the Saltford Walkers, led by Tony Gilroy, the Somerdale Ramblers, led by Les Cumner, the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, led by Richard Dyson, and the Avon Wildlife Trust, led by Dave Sage – each joined by well in excess of 20 walkers We also introduced two different types of walks – Alison Jordan, from British Nordic Walking, organised a walk on each day, and as a trial we

arranged two beginners’/taster walks for those just starting out. These were led by Keynsham WrW members Dawn Drury and Dave Johnson.

The longest walk of the event saw Dawn putting in the second appearance of the weekend, taking her group to Compton Dando, then on to Burnett Woods where the bluebells were in full display. The highlight of the festival was the Family Fun Finale on the Sunday afternoon in the Memorial Park, where hundreds turned out to enjoy a nature trail, where entrants had to find “animals” scattered

around the park. Providing extra entertainment were the Scarlett Frozen Princesses, Jimmy Mac with his balloon display and local girl Caitlin Brennan, who kept the crowds entertained with her face painting The organisers can look back on a very successful event, and look forward to arranging another next year. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who gave up their time to help out, and to Tesco, Waitrose, and especially Keynsham Town Council for their continued support and enthusiasm.

Dates for the diary

Sunday, May 7, meeting at 10am at the Fox & Hounds car park to board the minibus to Folly Farm – don’t forget to bring a picnic. Full details on the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome website, or contact wrwkeynsham@outlook. co.uk

n SPORT Fry Club FC is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month, with more than 200 people set to attend a celebration dinner with speaker Geoff Twentyman. Dave Noble, one of the organisers, looks back on a century of football, from ‘disastrous’ beginnings to today’s ‘beautiful game’. The early days JS Fry & Sons Ltd AFC, as the first football teams were named, was formed in 1916, and the first official game was believed to be played in September of that year on the company’s own ground JS Fry & Sons Ltd Athletic Ground at Ashley Down in Bristol (now the Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground). The ground provided facilities for all the JS Fry sporting activities, including cricket and hockey. Football, bowls, tennis and athletics were all introduced during the First World War in 1916. Around this time, so limited was the enthusiasm for football that only one playing team could be put onto the field, and then

often only with the help of one or two “outsiders”. After a couple of years, however, when the First World War was over, things changed and enthusiasm was such that four teams were soon playing, three in the Bristol and District Football League, and the other playing friendly games. It was quoted in the Fry’s Works Magazine of 1922 that “the early days of football (1916) in connection with the firm were disastrous, even though at that early date one of the directors, Mr Claude B Fry, had shown his interest in this ‘pastime of the men’”. Interest in football gradually grew and with much enthusiasm. Whether the teams lost or won, it made no difference as the players

past and future after a century on pitch of the “Cocoa Tree Boys’ Club” and the introduction of interdepartmental football games, a tradition that remained at Somerdale up until the early 1990s. The move to Somerdale All sections of sports and activities of JS Fry & Sons Ltd were transferred from the athletic ground in Ashley Down and the first football matches at Somerdale were played in September 1932 on land in front of the factory. Today games are being played on the fields viewed from the new Somerdale Pavilion. Players and managers from this season’s first team those football teams was Major Egbert Cadbury, who as many will know became the company managing director and who was very much instrumental in the factory move from the centre of Bristol to Somerdale, which

took 11 years, from 1921 to 1932. It was in the late 1920s early 1930s that both sporting activities and sections expanded. The football section extended its activities with the formation

Football in the future Fry Club FC has progressed significantly over the years, both in terms of the number of teams and the advancement in youth development. Continually throughout these years the club has also achieved a very high

standard of performances in local football. Everyone from company directors, officers, players, managers, coaches, helpers, supporters and anyone who has made a contribution to this great club should be all congratulated. Years of dedication and commitment has been made by many loyal servants over the years, many sadly now passed on, but to those now retired from the game and to those still involved, a very big thank you for all your efforts on reaching this unique landmark of 100 years of football with Fry’s. May it long continue with much success, but above all for everyone to enjoy this great game of ours to the full, in the correct spirit it should be played.

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC The A team win the KitCo Goulding Memorial Cup Final

News from the Crown Field

Keynsham Town’s First Team fell just short in their quest for promotion from the Toolstation Western League Division One.

The end of March saw a momentous Somerset Premier Cup Semi-Final against Taunton Town at Crown Fields. Against opposition from two divisions higher, Keynsham ran their visitors close in an enthralling cup tie in front of a bumper crowd of 235 on a foul night. Matt Brown equalised from close range in the 62nd minute and missed a golden chance to

seal a famous victory with only five minutes of normal time remaining. The game went to extra time and Taunton scored what proved to be the winner with a thunderous free-kick from all of 40 yards. It was a valiant effort against semi-professional opposition and put Keynsham Town FC in a great light. It was then back to league action as Warminster Town visited Crown Fields and the Ks cruised to a 3-0 victory. Matt Curnock scored a brace either side of halftime, and Matt Brown finished things off with his 29th

goal of the season. Then came the Easter weekend, when Keynsham’s hopes for promotion finally disappeared. A 1-0 defeat at local promotion rivals Hengrove Athletic on Good Friday was followed by a 2-0 reverse at Devizes Town on Easter Monday. Manager Chris King said: “They were both poor games and those pitches can make bad players look good and good players look bad! We had a chance to affect the table going into the Hengrove game but it was decided by one set piece and

a lack of concentration on our part. I felt some of the players lost heart after that game and we got knocked about at Devizes after missing a host of chances in the opening 20 minutes.” The season ended with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Ashton & Backwell United. An early goal by Kyle Box settled the Ks down, as they went on to produce some of their best football for weeks. They had to wait until the 65th minute to extend their lead, however, although it was worth the wait as full-back Tauren

n SPORT Williams volleyed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards for arguably the goal of the season. Another excellent crowd of 117 gave the players a standing ovation at the end, in recognition of the club’s best season for 16 years. The win left the Ks in 4th place with 81 points. On a sadder note, that game also marked the end of this particular Ks era. Not only have manager Chris King and his assistant Sean Day decided to step down from their roles, but club captain Rob Sheriton has hung his boots up. Chris said: “I now have a young family with the arrival of Ronnie last year and need to dedicate more time to him and my wife Lisa, and focus on things outside of football for a change. I have loved my time as Keynsham Town manager and would like to thank everyone that I have brushed shoulders with over the last four years, including my time running the reserves. “I’ve met loads of great people and I certainly won’t be too far away from the club. Who knows,

I might even dust the boots off for the odd game again! Thanks to the ones who have supported us and made it all worthwhile. It’s a club with great potential, not always simple behind the scenes but there’s plenty to work with”. Rob Sheriton is a club legend who started his career playing for Southampton youth teams, going on to train with the first team – cleaning their boots, washing kit, etc. He then went to Filton College, where they had a link with Bristol Rovers, for whom he played Under 18 and Reserve Team football until he was 19. Steve Cains brought him to Keynsham midway through the 2006/07 season and he made his debut for the Ks on December 2, 2006 in a 4-1 defeat at Hallen. Sheri went on to make 21 appearances for us that season, before joining Frome Town at the start of 2007/08 season. He spent a couple of months there before returning to Keynsham, where he has been ever since. He has turned down several offers over the years from higher

division teams to stay with the Ks. He made 309 first team appearances for the Ks, which in this day and age is rare loyalty from a sportsman to their club. Turning now to happier news, the first team’s disappointment over Easter was tempered by the A team’s brilliant victory in the KitCo Goulding Memorial Cup Final (the club’s first trophy for 14 years). They defeated Fishponds Old Boys Reserves (from a division above) 2-0 to pick up their first ever Bristol & Suburban League Cup on a hard, bumpy pitch at Mangotsfield United’s stadium. Teenager James Ollis scored both goals in the first half and the Ks ran out deserved winners, being presented with the cup by League Chairman Roger Tovey. Coupled with their 4th-place finish in the league, it has been a great first season in charge for youngsters Charlie Cox and Jordan Sealy. As the curtain falls on another season, club secretary Julian French said: “I would like to thank some of the many people who have made our success

this season possible. The club’s sponsors, including not only our loyal fans with their player sponsorship and Forecast 3 contributions, but Dribuild, I J McGill Transport, Smart Computers, The Old Bank, KitCo and CM Drylining, have put our club in its healthiest financial position for years. “On the pitch, the management team has been superb and the players have given us all some great moments to remember. The Ks’ senior teams have every reason to be proud of our achievements in 2016-17, and let’s hope we can build on these solid foundations next season and beyond.” The club will be holding the annual presentation night in the clubhouse on Saturday, May 13, from 7pm onwards. Everyone is welcome, and it would be great to see some of the club’s loyal supporters there! In the meantime, you can follow club news in the summer break on Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

Triple honour for archery clubs opening

Secretary David Smith, chair Bob Brooks and webmaster Sheena McCullagh with the awards at Keynsham Rugby Club

Two archery clubs based in Keynsham have been honoured on the national stage for their work in making the sport accessible to people of all levels of ability. Members of Bristol Bowmen and Golden Phoenix Archers, which caters specifically for archers with a disability, picked up both Club Website of the Year and a bronze plaquette for webmaster and coach Sheena McCullagh at Archery GB’s AGM in Birmingham. The website was praised for its content, ease of navigation and focus on inclusivity – it offers tools for those with disabilities as well as text in a range of languages. Sheena’s plaquette meanwhile honoured her services to the sport, with the citation from Archery GB reading: “'This archer’s passion has always been in our sport’s grass roots and, specifically, enabling people

with disabilities to find joy and self-esteem through archery. She is a champion of inclusivity and has helped us ensure that our members' magazine, Archery UK, is accessible to all.” Sheena, who launched Golden Phoenix Archers in 2006, spends around 30 to 40 hours converting articles from each edition of the quarterly magazine into an accessible format to meet the needs of print-disabled archers. One beneficiary is Team GB archer Roger Rees-Evans, who said: “After years of having bits of Archery UK read to me, I have read my first Archery UK magazine for myself and it has made my archery story complete. “Thanks to everyone, especially Sheena, who has made Archery UK magazine in a format that the growing number of visually impaired archers in this country can access. We can now read the articles that we want,

up the sport to all not what other people think we want.” Her work was celebrated with a third, unexpected honour in the shape of a signed Rio 2016 Paralympic shirt, presented by Archery GB’s CEO Neil Armitage as a thank you. Sheena said: “I thoroughly enjoy running the club website and doing the work on the magazine; they allow me to keep my skills sharp. Knowing that the magazine is so welcomed and is making such a positive impact to the lives of print-disabled archers has given me back a lot of the self-esteem I lost when I was made redundant. “Hearing the comments from Roger Rees-Evans is very humbling and it was wonderful to be acknowledged for the work I do: to be presented with the framed Rio shirt, and thanked in the AGM by Neil Armitage, was beyond my wildest dreams.” Neil Armitage said: “Archery

is the most inclusive and accessible sport in the UK and as such we aim to make our communications accessible to all. “We are extremely fortunate to have volunteers like Sheena who give up many hours of their own time to support Archery GB. With Sheena’s help we are able to provide accessible versions of our magazine, Archery UK. It was a pleasure to publicly acknowledge her support at our recent Archery GB AGM and to present her with the awards.” Bristol Bowmen, a general archery club for all ages, and Golden Phoenix shoot together at Keynsham Rugby Club, share a committee and run joint beginners’ courses. Fry’s keep up pressure but bow out of plate The Fry’s Girls’ U18 team bowed out of the GFA U18 Plate semifinal after a tough game against a strong Tuffley Girls side, writes our correspondent. It was Fry’s who took the game to Tuffley from the first whistle and created some great chances before Ellie Brockton scored from a corner. Within minutes Emily Rose was brought into action with a superb one-handed save to the right-hand corner of her goal. Fry’s kept attacking and were excellently marshalled at the back by Kelsey Manning and Amy Croom. On 35 minutes Tuffley on a counter-attack pulled level with

a long-range shot that nestled in the top right of the goal. Fry’s kept on threatening, with some great skill from Georgia Sweet leading to shots from Jade White and Ellie Brockton that came back off the woodwork. After the break it was Tuffley who now attacked Fry’s. Fry’s stood strong with some great tackling by Lauren Smith, Chloe Lapham and Jade Poolman. However, on 75 minutes Tuffley created a goal from the right wing to go 2-1 up. Fry’s attacked for the remainder of the game but were unable to get a clear shot at the Tuffley goal to level.

n SPORT Club gets season rolling with friendly The season opened at Keynsham Bowling Club in glorious sunshine when 40 members gathered for an opening roll-up on April 2, writes our correspondent. As is usual at the start of a new season there have been a series of men’s, ladies’ and mixed friendly fixtures. The men, fielding a strong side, beat their guests from Bath in what has become a traditional early season game. As the various league fixtures and club competitions commence, the green will be open from the start of May in

the mornings and from May 15, starting at 11am, there will be club coaches available to introduce anyone of any age to the joys of green bowls. Coaching co-ordinator Ian Tweedie said: “There is no need

to book in advance, just turn up at the stated times and the coaches will do the rest. “The club has a stock of bowls and shoes, which is all that will be needed for the initial sessions.”

So if you would like to try your hand at the sport come along – you will be made most welcome. Keynsham Bowling Club hosts a team from Bath, above

Keynsham Rugby secure champions’ crown and a step up for next season Keynsham Rugby 1st XI and a significant number of supporters made the trip to Chosen Hill FP FRC in Gloucester on April 22 and were rewarded with a win, 24-3, and enough league points to ensure their crowning as Western League (North) champions for the season, writes our correspondent. A place in South West 1 (West) awaits next season. They played breathtaking rugby for the opening 25 minutes and had an almost unassailable lead 24-0 at that stage. The home side had no answer to Keynsham’s speed, physicality and quality and were grasping at straws. Credit to them, they knuckled down and for the rest of the game it was an even contest, but it always looked unlikely that they could break through the Ks’ defence, which has been magnificent throughout the season, and their only reward was a penalty. Skipper Jack Weston, who was injured in the eye during the post-match celebrations when hit by a flying champagne cork, payed a glowing tribute to the two coaches, Jason Wheatley and Kevin Appleton, who have worked tirelessly over the past seven seasons and have developed a side of local talent. He also praised all the squad members who have all given their best continuously, particularly the younger crew who have really shown their worth. As with most clubs these days there was a high

Man of the season Ruben Edwards breaks from a maul at Chosen Hill toll of injuries during the season, fortunately none too serious, so the full squad saw plenty of action. Fingers crossed for next season. Elsewhere, Chew Valley RFC did what they had to do by beating Old Bristolians 3633 to guarantee second place and a play-off game versus Cullompton at Chew on April 29. Unfortunately they won’t be joining Keynsham at the next level after a 12-29 defeat to the Devonian side.
