Residents see red over double yellow lines plan Proposals to paint double yellow lines along much of Saltford High Street have been branded a “fiasco” after residents called a public meeting to demand the scheme is dropped. Besides the loss of on-street parking spaces – the only place

many householders on the street can leave their cars – villagers said their main concern was that an empty road would create a “race track” for speeding motorists. Residents and parish councillors at a public meeting on

April 23 said Bath and North East Somerset Council’s proposal had come as a surprise to them after signs appeared on lamp posts to publicise the scheme and announce the start of a public consultation. l Turn to Page 4

Play day to launch children’s survey Children from across Keynsham will have the chance to tell town leaders what play equipment they would like to see in local parks at a summer play day event. Bath Area Play Project (BAPP) is organising a range of activities in Keynsham Memorial Park on Thursday, May 31, from 11am to 3pm, for families to enjoy and Keynsham Town Council will be launching a consultation on play areas at the event. It comes after nine-year-old Claudia Tucker wrote to the council, which manages seven play areas, about a lack of play equipment for children aged nine and above. Councillors promised her they would ask children how they could improve parks and now they will be inviting young people and families to complete a survey at the event. Deputy town clerk Dawn Drury said: “This is an opportunity for families to have fun playing and enjoying time in our wonderful award-winning park. BAPP will be organising active play in so many ways –

team challenges, exploration and discovery tasks, activities that will develop social skills and increase physical activity.” Dr Cheryl Scott, town clerk, said: “The town council thought this would present an ideal opportunity to combine a fun day for Keynsham children with the launch of a specially designed NDP consultation on recreation and play areas for all Keynsham children (as promised to Claudia) and give them all the opportunity to have their say in how their town develops. “Volunteers will be present at the play day asking children to fill in their own special survey on what types of play equipment and recreational facilities they would like to see in Keynsham going forwards. The survey will then also be delivered to local schools as we are keen to ensure as many children as possible have the chance to be involved.” The survey is part of the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) and will be accompanied by an additional survey on recreational facilities and green spaces. Royal guest drops in for afternoon tea Keynsham residents welcomed a royal guest into their home when the Princess Royal visited to officially open the Chocolate Quarter development. Princess Anne was given a tour of the site, which includes a care home, retirement apartments, restaurants and shops, by the chief executive of St Monica Trust, David Williams. The tour included the £60 million development’s cinema, health spa, pottery studio and the Charterhouse care home, before the Princess Royal joined residents and staff for afternoon tea and unveiled a commemorative plaque. After the tour on April 13, Her Royal Highness helped to start a weekend of celebrations for the grand opening by switching on an interactive art installation in the form of a sun suspended between the former factory buildings. Her Royal Highness was visiting in her role as an honorary member of the Society of Merchant Venturers and was joined by Master of the society Charles Griffiths, the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, the High Sheriff of Somerset, the chair of B&NES Council Councillor Cherry Beath and the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Ian Gilchrist.

n NEWS l From Page 1 Saltford Parish Council held a packed meeting the previous week and demanded that the scheme was withdrawn in its entirety – but B&NES Council’s highways and traffic manager Kelvin Packer told around 80 villagers at the second public meeting that the consultation had to be carried out in full. Residents’ responses would all be taken into account, he said, and added that the traffic regulation order (TRO) was not a “done deal” as many were modified or dropped following consultations. He told the meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall that the scheme had been drawn up following concerns raised over access for emergency vehicles, refuse collections and because of claims that some motorists were driving onto pavements to pass other vehicles, putting pedestrians at risk. But residents in the hall said they feared the scheme would make the road less safe, with one saying: “If you put yellow lines in we’ve got speeding problems – what process do you go through

Saltford High Street to come up with a scheme that quite frankly is ridiculous?” Others added that they felt the real problem was the large lorries and tankers that use the street, including those accessing Wessex Water’s sewage treatment plant, and suggested a weight limit was what the High Street really needed.

B&NES Council leader Tim Warren said a working party could be set up to look at the High Street’s issues and that he would feed back to Councillor Mark Shelford, the cabinet member for transport and environment, that there was strong opposition to the proposed parking ban.

Mr Packer said the process for TROs had also been changed following the response and that in future parish and town councils would be consulted before the schemes were put to the public. The proposals also include parking bans along lengths of a number of streets in Keynsham – Charlton Park, Charlton Road, Handel Road, Chewton Close, Park Road, Vandyck Avenue, Avon Road, Monmouth Road, Dapps Hill, Maple Walk, Longmeadow Road, Cleeve Grove, West View Road, Mendip Close and St George’s Road. The town council called an extraordinary meeting on April 23 to discuss the plans and voted to make a formal complaint to B&NES Council about the lack of notification. After the meeting, Saltford Parish Council chairman Chris Warren said he was happy to be

part of a working group but it should be led by B&NES. He said: “They should have consulted the parish council from the very beginning. I won’t be completely reassured that this proposal has gone away until I see it confirmed in writing.” Fellow parish councillor Duncan Hounsell added: “This has been a fiasco. Most High Street residents found out about the proposed parking restrictions from notices on lamp posts or by word of mouth. The consultation period was only 15 working days. Residents are asking why this? And why now? “There needs to be a meaningful consultation that takes time to consider all the issues around parking, traffic flow, and speeding in the High Street.” Councillor Emma Dixon, who faced questions at the meeting over a council document from February that stated she was “happy with the proposals”, said the scheme was put forward in response to complaints from residents. She said: “These proposals were drawn up by officers and then put out to consultation.

This is a standard procedure and happens daily, where proposals are made and those affected are then consulted. “Consultation proved it was not popular, and now a decision will be made whether to go ahead with the scheme. This is just a consultation and given the feelings of those involved I will be pushing to stop the scheme. I’m hopeful that I will be successful.” She added: “The officers and cabinet member, who make the decision to take this further, are aware that I do not support the scheme and I’m hoping to receive confirmation within the week that the scheme is stopped.” A Wessex Water spokesman said: “We’ve not been involved in any discussions about parking in High Street, although heavy vehicles do regularly visit our water recycling centre at Saltford and access can sometimes be difficult due to parked cars. “A new access bridge over the river has been considered as part of the Bath and North East Somerset WaterSpace Project and a feasibility study is about to start.”

Call for singers to perform at flood musical A musical based on the memories of people who experienced the Great Flood of 1968 is returning to Keynsham after 20 years – and now singers and musicians are urgently needed to bring it to life. Bridge Across The Flood will be performed at the Bandstand in Keynsham Memorial Park on June 30 as part of Keynsham Music Festival Week to commemorate 50 years since the devastating flood. The musical was written in 1996 by Robin Grant and Neil Beddow as part of a project to remember the event and to bring together schools, orchestras and writing groups. It was performed in 1998 for the 30th anniversary of the flood with a number of people who had been affected by it acting as narrators. Dave Biddleston said the musical also aimed to connect the two sides of Keynsham – the older and newer estates – creating a metaphorical bridge. He said: “It is a fantastic musical, really accessible, very straight forward and hugely

entertaining with songs such as From a Trickle to a Stream and Sheets, Buckets, Cats and Dogs. “We are in desperate need of singers to join our choir and musicians to join our chamber orchestra. Anyone who wants to get involved can come to as many rehearsals as they can. This is a real community event that everybody can get involved in.” Dave is co-ordinating the show and performing in the choir, musician and teacher Richard Jackson is conducting, Steve Drew is musical director, George Liddell is working on sound effects and Phoenix KYT is providing young singers for the children’s parts. The group is hoping to have around 20 people in the choir and anyone who is interested in singing or joining the orchestra can email davebiddleston@ hotmail.co.uk or rich@richard jacksonmusic.com. Should I brush my pet’s teeth?

T

he answer is ideally yes! Cats and dogs can suffer with dental disease in the same way that humans can. What’s more, poor dental hygiene can lead to similar health issues, such as heart and kidney disease. Particles, saliva and bacteria build up on the surface of the teeth, plaque and tartar will accumulate. This will eventually lead to gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue). If gingivitis is allowed to go unchecked the plaque bacteria will start to penetrate below the gum line, leading to destruction of the bone and other tooth supporting structures – a condition termed periodontitis. This is a far more serious condition and, if left untreated, results in tooth loosening and

eventual tooth loss. Pets are very good at covering up toothache so keep an eye out for symptoms, which include: loss of appetite, inability to eat, bad breath, broken teeth, lumps on the gums, facial swelling and rubbing their face or mouth. While there is much we can do to treat dental disease, as always, prevention is better than cure and your veterinary practice will be able to advise you on dental hygiene for your pet. If you have any concerns about your pet’s dental health, or would like more information on caring for your pet’s teeth, contact your vet, or call Keysham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 for a free dental check. Second phase of bypass work begins Work will begin early this month on the second phase of a £2.5 million scheme to resurface Keynsham bypass. Following work on the westbound carriageway in autumn last year, attention will now turn to Hicks Gate roundabout and the east-bound dual carriageway and will include bridge deck waterproofing on the A4 and A4174 and refurbishment of parapet barriers. Preparation began in April, and the project is due to get under way on Tuesday, May 8, at Hicks Gate, with work expected to take until July to complete. The council is advising motorists to allow for delays during some periods as some lane closures will be in place during the day. Councillor Mark Shelford, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for

transport and environment, said: “We are pleased to see this project will soon be completed, as it supports one of our key priorities to improve local transport. “At a total cost of £2.5m this is one of our single biggest highway maintenance improvement schemes for a number of years on what is one of our busiest roads on the network. “While we will try to minimise disruption by using traffic management appropriate to the circumstances, due to the substantial nature of the work – particularly the waterproofing – some lane closures will need to stay in place during the day.” Updates during the scheme will be available on B&NES Council’s Twitter feed and Facebook page.

Talking Newspaper’s Mary named 2018’s Good Citizen A woman who launched a news service for visually impaired people from her kitchen table has been named Keynsham’s Good Citizen for 2018. Mary Burnard set up Keynsham Talking Newspaper in 1983, recording news items onto cassette tapes with the help of a couple of volunteers. The group raised some money to cover the cost of a microphone, cassette recorder, tape duplicator and tapes, which were all moved between different volunteers’ houses for recordings each week. The number of volunteers grew, as did the Talking Newspaper’s listenership. Around 100 visually impaired or blind people in Keynsham, Bristol and Bath now receive free weekly recordings of local news and features in the post – with memory sticks now replacing the old cassette

Footage of shoppers removing plastic packaging from their food and leaving it at the checkouts at the town’s Tesco store went viral in the weeks after the event organised by the Keynsham Plastic Re-Action Group. As well as making national news in both the press and on TV, the video from the day has been viewed almost 17 million times since it was posted online by Radio Bristol. Messages have also poured in from around the world, say organisers, including from Australia, America, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, with many people inspired to hold their own event and asking for advice. The group will be arriving at the store at 4.30pm to carry out a short shop and anyone

local TV news, on Radio Bristol, mentioned in the national press and on evening national BBC News. “What has been particularly great has been the interest, both from other areas of the UK and from abroad, from people keen to hold similar events and we do indeed seem to have been successful in one of our aims – encouraging people to take action within their own communities and recognise that as consumers we can have some impact on what happens around us and to us. “We hope that continued ‘actions’ at our local stores will attract increasing numbers of people to join us in removing and returning plastic wrappings from their purchases – until they each agree to reveal the amount of plastic packaging they create, to pay towards its safe disposal and, as a matter of urgency, take steps to phase out its use.”

Council urged to call off land auction Residents hoping to preserve a patch of disused land near Keynsham town centre as a public nature reserve are calling on Bath and North East Somerset Council to withdraw the site from an auction later this month. The quarter-of-an-acre site at the junction of Bath Hill and Fox Hounds Lane is due to go under the hammer on May 14 with a guide price of £25,000. At the time of going to print, a B&NES spokesperson said it was in talks with Keynsham Town Council over “alternative options” and had extended the deadline for community groups to submit proposals until the end of the week – but the land remained in the auction. The town council was due to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the issue on Wednesday, May 2. Margaret and Ian Maxwell, who are leading the campaign to stop the sale, said the site – which sits inside Keynsham Conservation Area – had “no de-

Repairs are needed to the walls velopment potential” but needed urgent work to its walls and vegetation. They said residents feared a developer might sit on the land for many years and it would fall into further disrepair. The site, originally the gardens and orchards of a row of cottages, has many mature trees, shrubs and supports a range of wildlife and residents needed more time to develop the idea of a public nature reserve, they said. Mrs Maxwell said: “This is not an inconspicuous piece of land, tucked away from public view. It occupies a prominent position on one of the main road approaches to the town centre.

The land not only has intrinsic value as a nature resource, it also makes a valuable contribution to the visual appearance of this part of Keynsham Conservation Area, which is characterised by openness and mature planting. “Above all, it offers an on-off opportunity to form a nature resource for local people, right in the heart of the town. All we are asking is for B&NES to allow sufficient time to explore the level of interest in the community to use the land in this way and not to lose this unique opportunity for the sake of short-term financial gain.” The council spokesperson added: “The auction prospectus specifically states that the property lies within the Keynsham Conservation Area, outside the Housing Development Boundary and is part of the Green Infrastructure, with significant trees. Any development of the land would need to be approved via the planning process.”

n NEWS Step back in time on walks through history A series of summer Sunday walks around Keynsham has been launched by Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society. The idea is to combine a short walk – not more than two miles – with the opportunity to learn about the area’s heritage. Most of the walks will have a theme, such as Ecclesiastical, Mills and Industry and the Roman period, and they will all be led by society members. The walks are open to everyone and there is no charge. The series kicked off with more than 30 people enjoying a general history walk around the town centre led by Dave Johnson and was held as part of this year’s Keynsham Walking Festival. The next will be on May 20 when Keith Norton will lead a walk around Keynsham looking

at sites that relate to the ecclesiastical history of the town, including the remains of Keynsham Abbey and St John’s parish church. All of the Keynsham walks start at the café in the Memorial Park at 2.30pm. The programme includes one walk around Saltford, which will be on June 10 and will start from The Shallows car park at 2.30pm. Society chairman Richard Dyson said: “We know that many people are keen to find out more about the history of their surroundings; this is a pleasant way to do it and get a bit of gentle exercise as well.” Details of each walk will be shown in Keynshamvoice’s What’s On section or you can find the full list on the society’s website at www.keysalthist.org. uk/program

Town’s 10K race is up and running again A running club has teamed up with a Bristol youth charity to revive the popular Keynsham 10K five years after its demise. The race was organised for 25 years by 1st Keynsham Scouts until 2013’s event was cancelled because of rising costs. Members of Bitton Road Runners had talked about relaunching the race but it wasn’t until a meeting between chairman Chris Palmer and Jamie Sanigar, a co-founder of Bristol-based boxing charity Empire Fighting Chance and Saltford resident, that plans really got up and running. Chris said: “It was such a popular race and it has been on our minds to revive it for a few years. I visited Jamie’s boxing gym and he told me about the charity’s inspiring story and what good work they do down there. He wanted ideas on how to get people to run races and collect sponsorship on behalf of the

charity and I suggested reviving the 10K to raise funds.” The race is now scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 7, at 10am, starting from Somerdale and following a route very similar to that of the previous 10K. Runners will leave Somerdale, go into the High Street, along Charlton Road to Chewton Keynsham and then back via the Memorial Park. The race, which could include up to 800 runners, will be chip-timed and the course has already been measured out by an accredited official. Bitton Road Runners has around 300 members and also organises the Sodbury Slog, the Hanham Horror and the Summer 5k Series along the Bristol to Bath cycle path and Chris said: “The club has a strong reputation and this will be a high quality race that we plan to make an annual event.” All proceeds from the event

will go to Empire Fighting Chance, which was set up 11 years ago to support youngsters aged from eight to 25 in fighting the impact of deprivation on their lives. The charity combines non-contact boxing with mentoring, education, therapy and careers advice to help youngsters facing a range of issues, including mental health problems, risk of exclusion from school and crime. Jamie, whose wife Liz is a member of Bitton Road Runners, says Empire Fighting Chance now works with 500 young people a week and there are plans to evolve into a national charity. He said: “We were looking for an event to raise awareness of what we do as well as funds. My wife and I have both run the Keynsham 10K a few times and it was a mainstay of the running calendar. Between the running club and the charity we have the

skill set to build it back up to the good standard the previous organisers set. “Through word of mouth over just a couple of weeks 120 people have already signed up. It was one of the original 10Ks locally and I think it’s important to bring it back for the community and we are hoping people and businesses in Keynsham get behind it.” The organisers will be approaching local businesses to seek sponsorship in the coming weeks and registration for runners is now open at www.fullonsport.com/event/ keynsham10k/profile Anyone who would like to get involved in supporting the race can contact Chris Palmer by emailing keynsham10kracedirector@ gmail.com To find out more about Empire Fighting Chance, visit www.empirefightingchance.org

n NEWS Young leader Rob wins annual honour A Keynsham student who has shown “exceptional leadership qualities” has won an award presented to one young role model every year. Year 13 Wellsway School pupil Rob Collard received the Jack Boulton Award during a tennis fun day at the Sports Training Village at Bath University. Rob, a member of Saltford Tennis Club, has held a number of leadership roles at school, in particular in music and performing arts, and was nominated by tennis coach Dillon Slade. Rob works with Dillon as assistant coach after completing his Tennis Leaders’ Award. Jack’s dad Dave presented Rob with the cup, which is given out every year by the Keynsham and Saltford Sports Network in Jack’s memory.

Jack remembered as friends and family host annual event by Rosa Sherwood Each year family, friends and the wider community come together to remember and celebrate the life of Saltford teenager Jack Boulton. Jack was a young and talented sportsman who died at the age of just 17 from an undiagnosed heart condition. Friends and family have since been raising money and awareness for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) to highlight the need for support and help to make a difference. The annual Jack’s Day will be held at Saltford Sports Club on Saturday, May 26, from 4pm. Everyone is invited come along to enjoy a football game between Saltford Football Club and Keynsham Cricket Club, both teams Jack played for. There will also be live music later in the

Jack Boulton evening, a barbecue and a raffle. Jack’s parents June and Dave Boulton are hoping the event will raise enough money to hold another free heart screening at Wellsway School offering the local community the chance to have their hearts tested for any

deficiencies. More information about this can be found at www. testmyheart.org Since its formation in 1995, CRY has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac arrest. A spokesperson for the event said: “Unfortunately it’s still a saddening statistic that every week in the UK, at least 12 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions. Jack’s family and friends are passionate about doing all they can to help change this. “If you would like to support the event, you can donate at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jacksday2018 or email robyn.sayers@hotmail.com if you would like to donate a raffle prize. All donations are greatly appreciated and will help fund an invaluable cause.”

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

W

hat can each of us do to reduce the chances of us being a victim of crime? Keynsham and the surrounding areas have always been a target for travelling criminals. With two main arterial routes, the A4 and the A37, it lends itself to creeper-style offences of thefts and burglaries. These are offences that are quick to perform with offenders moving away from the location before they are detected. Some areas are more prone to crime than others and there are a number of factors to this, some we can influence and some we can’t. Look at your property, business or smallholding and see where it is vulnerable. If the rear of a property can be reached with no physical barrier, ie a gate, fence or wall, then

an offender can access this without being seen and use this seclusion to avoid detection. Other things to think about are windows and doors. As the weather gets better we often leave windows and even doors open overnight and while away from the property. I would suggest that if you are going to do this to fit a retainer so that they will only open a small amount and that other adjoining windows are locked. Also think about windows situated above a flat roof – you would be surprised at the walls and buildings that can be scaled. This time of year sees an increase in burglaries of outbuildings and sheds. We use our promotional trailer to demonstrate different types of security measures to try to prevent this. We call it Sheducation. If you added up the value of tools, lawn mowers, bikes etc that we all keep in our sheds, the cheap clasp and lock are probably not proportionate to secure this. Review your security and if you need advice then please make contact with your local neighbourhood team, who can attend and give guidance. We also

15

have a crime reduction officer who can attend and suggest additional measures to help secure your home and belongings. The easiest way to evaluate your home or business is to look at the surroundings and the closest other properties or similar locations. If I were going to attack a property and I saw one with an alarm and one without, it’s obvious which one would be less conspicuous to target. On a positive note, reported anti-social behaviour has seen a decline over the last month. We have been working closely with a number of offenders and have issued more anti-social behaviour contracts. We have been suffering with criminal damage to motor vehicles. If you see anyone committing offences then, if you have time, please gather as much information as possible. Report incidents to the police as soon as they occur, which gives us the best chance to get to the location and deal with offenders. If possible, without putting yourself in harm’s way, gain a full description, or even video or photographs of suspects. Please

be mindful that I do not want you or your property to become a target – if you can do this from a distance without being seen then that would be best. If you have one then advise your Neighbourhood Watch. If you don’t know of one in your area but are interested then please contact us and we will put you in contact with one or assist in setting one up. Lastly, we have a couple of scrambler-style motorbikes being ridden around the west side of Keynsham, mainly the trees estate, Caernarvon Road, Queens Road and surrounding areas. These bikes are not street legal and are reportedly ridden by youths. It is being reported to us as anti-social behaviour and it is really dangerous to ride a vehicle designed for offroad use on the road. The riders are not wearing any safety equipment. If anyone has any information on the owners or riders then please get in contact and, again, gain as much information as possible and pass it on. We have numerous powers we can use and are keen to get them off the road before they are involved in an accident.

Two celebrations for centenarian Edith A Keynsham woman has marked her 100th birthday with not one but two celebrations. Friends, neighbours and carers all wished Edith Hucker many happy returns by throwing two parties in her honour. Edith was born on April 30, 1918, and was brought up in St Philip’s Marsh in a family of seven children. She spent all of her working life at Wills Tobacco Factory and married Ted in 1940 at St Mary Redcliffe Church. She moved to Keynsham around 10 years ago to be nearer her sister Joan. A few days before her birthday, staff from Goldcare who support Edith at home organised a celebration with balloons, flowers and cake. One face was missing, however, as Edith’s care support worker Sarah had gone into labour and the centenarian said she couldn’t wait to find out if the new arrival – born almost exactly 100 years

Housing bid for second green-belt site A developer is asking B&NES planning chiefs to release a parcel of former green-belt land in between Keynsham and Saltford and give it the go-ahead to build up to 200 homes – leading town councillors to say they feel the plan is being “pushed forward”. The land, off the A4 Bath Road, is “safeguarded”, which means it is not to be developed at present but may be needed in future to meet housing targets. Mactaggart and Mickel has already won outline planning permission for a 250-home estate and a new primary school on land directly next to the site in question. This first site is now in housebuilder Crest Nicholson’s hands (see panel). The second site is currently not allocated for development by B&NES and, under its own policy, planning permission can only be granted after the council reviews its Local Plan, a process that is ongoing. Mactaggart and Mickel is

screening for the existing houses, no real care facilities for the very young and the very old, it will generate a sterile community that just sleeps there. “For both of these developments there is still no viable traffic plan for the A4.” Keynsham Town Council’s planning committee has told B&NES Council it believes the plans are being “pushed forward” alongside the neighbouring development and added: “The town council have noted concerns from residents in this locality in respect of traffic modelling, traffic congestion, air quality, highway safety for pedestrians, effect on the character of the neighbourhood and loss of amenity to residents.” Meanwhile officers at B&NES’ own Highways department have objected to the scheme, saying there is “insufficient capacity” on the existing road network to accommodate the increase in traffic likely to be generated by the

Land off the A4 on the edge of Keynsham is the subject of planning applications for 461 homes hoping to get the green light, arguing that B&NES won’t meet its housing targets by the plan’s 2029 deadline as other development sites in and around Bath have suffered delays. The scheme for the eight-hectare site includes up to 200 homes, from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom houses, accessed from a new signal-controlled junction onto the A4. It would also provide land to allow a new primary school on the neighbouring development

n NEWS 250-home estate moves step closer A plot of land bordering Keynsham’s eastern edge has moved a step closer to being transformed into a new housing estate. Housebuilder Crest Nicholson is now leading plans to develop the site off the A4, known locally as Breaches Gate, building 250 new homes and a new primary school. The site has already been granted outline planning permission and now Crest Nicholson has submitted more detailed plans to Bath and North East Somerset Council as the next step towards getting permission to begin work. Information about the proposals has been published online at www.crest-keynsham. proposed development. They add that there is a “commitment to deliver” a link road between the A4 and Avon Mill Lane “before

info and Crest’s senior planning executive Emma Geater said: “The outline planning permission established the principle that that site could be developed for residential use. The reserved matters application deals with the detail. Everything from the materials used to build the houses to the plants that will be used to landscape the site. We have created this website in order to provide local residents with easy access to the site proposals and the opportunity to ask any questions about our plans. ” The developer has at the same time submitted a separate application for an extra 11 homes – six two-bed flats and five three-bed houses – on a piece of land at the entrance to the development site. Following the publication of the plans, Saltford Parish any further development of this scale occurs”. The plans can be viewed at www.bathnes.gov.uk – reference

Council has raised concerns about increasing levels of traffic on the A4 while Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Parks and Green Spaces department has objected to the lack of defined pedestrian access to Manor Road Community Woodland from the new estate. The developer says: “The proposal provides a high quality residential development focused around large areas of public open space. A leafy character and a simple and contemporary aesthetic that complements the character of Keynsham will be an asset for residents and visitors.” The plans – references PP06818445 and PP-06818504 – can be viewed at www.bathnes. gov.uk. Consultation closes on May 3 on the 11 new homes and May 4 for the detailed application for 250 new homes. The launch is being co-ordinated by Lisa Gill from Security Group, which is based in Lays Farm Trading Estate, and places can be booked at www.wemeanbiz.co.uk or call 01934 835396 for more information.

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

keynshamvoice

May, 2018

It’s full steam ahead for Bloom

with chair Denise James

A

number of Keynsham in Bloom members recently took part in an exchange history trip to Bradford on Avon. Taking us just over 20 minutes, we took the train from Keynsham to see what the Saxon town has to offer to visitors. We were met at the station by local historian Ivor Slocombe and Councillor Emma Franklin. Ivor led us on a two-hour walking tour of the town, taking in the Saxon Tithe Barn, Holy Trinity Church, the town lock-up and bridge, the regeneration of the former Avon Tyres factory now known as Lamb Yard and stopping off in the Shambles for a refreshing cup of tea. We also met Dave Walden back at the station to see how he

and his team of volunteers have transformed the station gardens. The sun shone and, combined with clear blue skies, it made for a very enjoyable trip. The following day a group of 20 visitors paid us an exchange visit and were welcomed at Keynsham station by Richard Dyson, chair of Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, Dawn Drury, our Bloom secretary, and Heather Cullimore, Severnside Community Rail Partnership project officer. Unfortunately, the weather was not so kind as it had been to us the previous day. The visitors took in the abbey remains, the Memorial Park, the former Steel Mills and then it was back up Dapps Hill to the High Street for refreshments. Our Bradford visitors thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Keynsham. They thought our station was very welcoming and especially liked the art installation. Several of them said they will be coming back to Keynsham for the music festival. The idea for the exchange visit

originally came via ACORP (Association of Community Rail Partnerships), which is charged with engaging community groups who are involved with their local railway station. Severnside Community Rail organised group rail passes for us all and it was a successful weekend. We are already looking at other ways in which we can encourage visitors to hop on a train and travel to Keynsham next year.

Judges set a date

We can now confirm that Keynsham will be judged in the South West in Bloom competition on Friday, July 13, and we will be welcoming judges Jane Pagano and Michael Foy. Both Jane and Michael are experienced judges and have been involved in Bloom for several years. Jane is an active member of Portishead in Bloom and Michael, although now retired, was responsible in overseeing works in several high-profile parks in Cornwall. We look forward to showcasing our town and communities.

However, we have suffered several setbacks over the last few weeks, which we hope will not jeopardise our hopes of retaining our gold medal status again this year. B&NES Council parks department has advised us that it is no longer able to supply and maintain our hanging baskets. Coupled with that, we cannot afford the cost of getting the council to water our High Street planters. The committee has had to think very seriously as to whether we go ahead with installing hanging baskets this year. We have managed to source an alternative basket supplier. Watering the High Street planters, however, is still very much a major problem for us. If we do eventually get the summer we are all wishing for, then we will require additional help with watering. If any local businesses feel that they can help by watering a planter close to their premises, then please do contact us. To maintain our gold status, our floral features have to be maintained to the highest

display – despite some setbacks standards, with watering playing a major key role. We are also looking for volunteers to help plant and maintain our floral displays outside Holmoak and Chandag shops.

Poppy Cascade

We now have more than 3,000 knitted poppies and are well on the way to creating our cascade for St John’s Church, which will form the centrepiece for the town’s Remembrance service. We will be contacting local schools and asking them to take part in creating poppy bottle art displays for each of the 51 Keynsham residents who lost their lives during World War I. There are also plans for a concert involving schoolchildren, which is being organised by Golden Oldies charity founder Grenville Jones. We are working closely with Keynsham Royal British Legion and are looking for support with our poppy cascade installation, in particular with the sourcing and purchasing of the netting that the poppies will be fixed to, so if any

Visitors from Bradford on Avon are welcomed by Dawn Drury, Richard Dyson and Heather Cullimore local business would like to get involved, please get in touch.

Bottle top art

Please come and join us on Thursday, May 31, when the Bath Area Play Project (BAPP) visits the Memorial Park to host a range of craft and play activities. Youngsters will be given the opportunity to help us make our bottle top marine art creations. Another opportunity to get involved will be at the

Keynsham Music Festival creative tent on Saturday, June 30, and Sunday, July 1. There is still time for you to collect plastic bottle and container tops and hand them in to the town council offices. We are also on the lookout for wood offcuts that we can upcycle to make templates.

Scout Plant Sale

The committee has decided this year to source the majority of

our plants for our floral displays at the Scout plant sale. The Scouts and Beavers have over the last couple of years helped us with our planting-up events. Therefore, by supporting their plant sale, we feel that we are giving something back.

Scarecrow Trail

There’s still time to pick up an entry form for this year’s Scarecrow Trail – closing date for entries is June 15.

n YOUTH & EDUCATION

Mo pens winning story for contest A Keynsham schoolgirl’s tale of death and detective work in the classroom has won her top prize in Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Young Crime Writer’s Competition 2018. Eight-year-old Mo Kennedy was announced as the winner of the annual contest at Keynsham Library, where the eight finalists’ stories were read out loud to the audience before the prizes were handed out. Mo’s story, Paris Green, follows Nora, who finds her art teacher dead during breaktime and then has to piece together the clues to discover how she met her untimely end. The story’s title is the name of a highly toxic paint, revealed Mo, who is now working on a sequel. She said: “They announced the winners in reverse order starting with the runners-up

so when second place was announced I was really happy. Some of my friends were here too and I came to the front and got a certificate and a Kindle.” The keen reader has already downloaded Kid Normal by Greg James and Chris Smith onto her Kindle and says her favourite books include the Lemony Snicket series and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. The Saltford C of E Primary pupil shares her love of writing with mum Kate, who also writes crime fiction, and already has big plans to combine writing and art in the future. Mo, who has a younger brother called Sid, said: “My friend Alice and I want to have a writing and art partnership where we write and illustrate our own books and go on tour in a van that also becomes a library.”

Mo Kennedy with her B&NES Young Crime Writer first prize certificate at Keynsham Library Second place in the contest went to Harriet Whitmore, 10, with Lois Edwards, 11, in third place. Runners-up were Alice

Edwards, seven, Zachary Dallimore, nine, Evelyn Shipp, 12, Thomas Bradley, 13, and Maddie Whitmore, 13.

Four to fly flag for UK Scouting in US

W

e are delighted to report that four Keynsham Scouts have been selected to represent UK Scouting at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, in the US, during the summer of 2019. Nathan, James, Lucy and Emma will join two Scouts from Saltford – Austin and Sam – plus Caitlin from Radstock and James from High Littleton in the UK contingent. World Scout Jamborees, like the Olympics, only take place every four years and consist of 10 days of camping and experiencing life with a family from the host country. Next year will see an event hosted jointly by the US, Canada and Mexico with the theme “Unlock a New World” at a purpose-built campsite called the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. This is a 14,000-acre site in West Virginia, complete with the New River Gorge National River for white water rafting.

All equipment is supplied and no experience is required – simply turn up for two hours of fun. Morning and afternoon sessions are available and advance booking is highly recommended. Please quote WSJ when booking in. If you have any questions regarding this event, or wish to book, please contact us on 07961 394264 or email claypigeon@1stkeynsham scouts. org.uk

St George’s Day Promise Renewal

Nearly 300 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, leaders, supporters and parents packed into Keynsham Scout HQ on Monday, April 23, to renew their Scout Promise, share some of the exciting, adventurous and fun activities they have been doing over the last 12 months and, perhaps best of all, revive a tradition that the group started in 1909 and kept up until the early 1950s – that of eating a St George’s Day cake! As the picture below shows, we are glad we now have a big hall!

n NEWS Charities and choir unite for vintage fair A group of singers has teamed up with local charity shops to hold a “vintage and preloved” fair. Members of Black Sheep Harmony A Capella Chorus say the event will bring together a host of charities under one roof to sell a select range of donated items. St Peter’s Hospice, the PDSA and the British Heart Foundation are among the charities that will be involved in the fair at Cadbury Heath Hall, Warmley, on Saturday, June 2. Around 20 stall holders will be selling a variety of vintage clothing, decorative china and glassware, kitchenalia, collectibles and more. Refreshments will be available in the Vintage Tea Room, including homemade cakes and sweets, and there will be roving barbershop quartets to provide the entertainment all day. As well as supporting the charities, the event, which runs from 10am to 4pm, will raise funds to help the chorus stage future events.

New inclusive club will turn members into music-makers! A new music club has been launched in Keynsham to give adults with learning difficulties the chance to sing, learn an instrument and perform. Keynsham and District Mencap Society is running weekly Music Man sessions, working with Music Man Project UK, which has already put together two sell-out performances at the London Palladium. The inclusive music club will give members the chance to learn to sing and sign specially written songs and to play instruments and there are plans for the group to perform to the wider community and take part in events in the future. Music Man Project Keynsham will take place on Saturday mornings, from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Queen’s Road

Methodist Centre, Keynsham. Anyone who would like to find out more about Music Man Project Keynsham, or who is interested in joining or becoming a volunteer, can contact Laura Jefferies on

with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

A welcome return for walking festival – whatever the weather

T

he third Keynsham Walking Festival was successfully extended to three days, with a themed walk on the Friday evening. This first walk was a joint venture between Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society and Keynsham Walkers are Welcome and attracted 34 participants, who thoroughly enjoyed the talk on the general history of Keynsham town centre. This was also the first of six monthly history walks being organised by the history society, each with a different historical theme. The bad weather took its toll for the rest of the weekend, with the numbers slightly down compared with last year’s success, because of the lower numbers of casual walkers. Again we teamed up with Les Sumners’ Somerdale Ramblers, Helen Richardsons’ AllSeasons Nordic

Walking, Dave Sage and the Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT), and the history society with another themed walk led by Richard Dyson. The Walkers are Welcome also provided leaders for three additional walks, which included a beginners’ walk around the Memorial Park, a 10-mile trek to Compton Dando and onto the Tucking Mill, and a shorter walk to Queen Charlton via Stockwood Vale. The second history walk took in the Saltford of years gone by, with the nature walk incorporating the flora and fauna of Manor Road Community Woodland. The muddy conditions did not deter the walkers, and all seemed to enjoy the experience. The walks were accompanied by a social event in the form of a quiz at the Conservative Club on the Saturday evening. The final event of

the festival was the annual family fun day in the park on the Sunday afternoon, and this was worst hit by the weather but a “Find the Bugs” treasure hunt, Frozen princesses, Adventure Team Pirates, face-painting and balloon modelling were all on hand to entertain the crowd.

Manor Road Community Woodland Walk

A group of 10 enthusiasts enjoyed a varied and interesting walk around Manor Road Community Woodland on April 8. AWT member Dave Sage, ably assisted by Liz Wintle and Judy Penny, explained something of the history of the site and pointed out key flora and fauna. The woodland (along with Abbot’s Wood near Charlton Road) was planted during the 1990s, as part of a national scheme to surround

Now, more than 20 years on, the metre-high whips have grown into seven-metre-tall trees, which provide shade and shelter for a rich diversity of animals and ground floor plants. The trees are all native to the UK, including flowering cherry, field maple, ash, oak, wayfaring tree, spindle, blackthorn (which was in flower) and hawthorn (in flower in May).

These trees enable ground floor plants to thrive, including cuckoo pint, wild garlic, celandine, violet and, notably, primroses and cowslips, which grow in abundance in some parts of the wood, giving a bright splash of yellows. Plenty of birds were in evidence, including resident robins, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits and song thrushes, as well as recently arrived chiffchaffs and blackcaps in full song, claiming territories and attracting mates. A group is hoping to drastically cut the amount of food thrown away in the Keynsham area – by sharing it around the community. Members of Chewton Keynsham Eco-Church are investigating the idea of a Community Fridge for the town. The initiative, which has already been introduced in 37 other parts of the country, sees businesses and individuals donate fresh produce that would otherwise be thrown away to the “Fridge” at the end of each day. The food can then be used by anyone in the community. Around 5,000 items a month are donated to Frome’s Community Fridge scheme, which amounts to around 24 tonnes of food saved from the bin each year, says the group. A steering group has now been set up to explore the idea and anyone who would like to know more can find them on Facebook at “Keynsham Community Fridge”.

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

Festival offers one amazing week of music Keynsham Music Festival’s festival week – from June 25 to July 1 – promises some real high points this year. For the first time the Festival Opera in the Park will feature a full performance of a classical opera. Perhaps the first full opera performed in Keynsham for a very long time – perhaps the first ever. The performance will take place inside the Top Marquee, fully seated and completely covered and weather proof on Thursday, June 28. Those who attended Opera in the Park last year will already know that The Opera in a Box company know how to perform and present opera. Festival organiser Ric Davison said: “This performance will be one of our festival dreams come true, and we are really hoping that the Keynsham public will support it – opera in Keynsham at a ticket price that everybody should be able to afford.” Another highlight of the

week will be the swing and jive ballroom dance in the park on the Friday night – not exactly the Blackpool Tower Ballroom but as near as we can get! The Thornbury Swing Band made a huge impact last year and their female vocalist Charlie Atterton is, of course, a local performer and veteran of the festival. Both of these events will have bar and food facilities to ensure a real night out. Festival chairman Mike May is particularly grateful to St Monica Trust for their generous

support for these events this year – tied in with which will be a special jazz evening at the Chocolate Quarter on the Wednesday evening of festival week, which is both free and open to the public. The evening will feature three bands of differing jazz styles and will take place in B Block where the usual evening fare will be available. Opera in a Box will be giving a private performance to St Monica residents on the Thursday afternoon before the evening opera. Extending the musical choice for everybody will be a concert of light classical and popular music by Three Rivers on Tuesday, June 26, in The Space. Three Rivers are a female trio of classically trained singers who have made a real impact with their intimate and highly entertaining performances – especially at Bristol Balloon Fiesta last year. Grenville Jones will be

presenting the festival’s annual choir concert in St John’s Church on the festival week Friday evening, with Keynsham’s The Good Afternoon Choir and special guests. This is a free event with a retiring collection. Another new festival event will be a traditional afternoon tea dance in the Fear Hall on Monday, June 25, from 2pm until 4.30pm. This will, of course, feature live music and a real cream tea – all for £5 a head! Festival thanks go to Patricia Veale and the Fear Hall managers for their support with staging this event, which is sure to be popular. Full details of all festival events in the week and at the weekend, will be available on the festival website – www. keynshammusicfestival.co.uk – and tickets are available online at keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk or over the counter at Keynsham Town Council office in Temple Street.

Zoe Dashfield has had her mum Julie by her side throughout her battle with ovarian cancer – now the two will be tackling a tough obstacle course side by side as they raise money for charity. Zoe, from Saltford, spent her 24th birthday in Bath RUH recovering from an operation to remove what she thought was a cyst – before doctors discovered it was actually a cancerous tumour the size of a melon. She was then given the devastating news that her remaining ovary would need to be removed before she was 30 as there was a high chance it too would become cancerous. Just a year on from her operation, Zoe is now in training for the Race for Life Pretty Muddy obstacle course run at the Downs in Bristol on June 30 to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Speaking about her diagnosis, she said: “After a number of frustrating trips to the GP, where I was told I had IBS, I knew something wasn’t right and having gone through pregnancy tests, had ruled out I wasn’t expecting. “My mum had taken me back to see a different doctor, thankfully, as I wasn’t satisfied they had found what was wrong with me. I had an appointment with another GP and was told a date had been made for me to have a scan. Thankfully, they had got to the bottom of the problem and it revealed I had a cyst which had contained a lot of fluid around it.” At this point Zoe’s stomach was so bloated she had to wear maternity clothes so she was relieved the operation was going ahead – which turned to shock after a biopsy revealed the problem was in fact cancer.

Zoe, who works as a network planner for Western Power, said: “I threw myself back into work and the normality of being at work I think kept me going – but at the same time I knew that I’d lost everything. My future as a single woman and one who may not have children took its toll.” Last year she joined hundreds of other women to take part in a Race for Life event and says she is looking forward to the Pretty Muddy challenge – with her loved ones around her. “I’m so excited to be taking part this year with my mum and sister. It feels we are a team and we can tackle the course together,” she said. “My friends will be joining us and if I can raise awareness of early diagnosis and knowing your own body then I hope to encourage people to contact their GP early if something doesn’t feel right. “I’m determined to do all I can in the fight against cancer. That’s why I’m urging women to take part in Race for Life Pretty Muddy. No matter how much money you raise, it’ll help to fund crucial cancer research to help more people, just like me, survive.” Lisa Sweeting, Cancer Research UK’s Bath event manager, said: “Race for Life events are not competitive and women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around. “Whether they plan to wade their way through the mud or make a big splash, every muddy step they take will help to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.” Women can find out more and sign up at www.raceforlife.org

THE BIG PICTURE Film review with Harrison Thorne

Classic game gets modern movie makeover Tomb Raider (12A) t’s been 17 years since Angelina Jolie starred in the movie adaptation of the classic video game Tomb Raider, released to widespread critical panning and then quickly forgotten about. And now here we are with a new film which adapts the drastically different 2013 Tomb Raider game, this time starring Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, a young woman who gets stranded on a farflung island while searching for her father, played by Dominic West. As low as the bar is set I do believe that this is the best gameto-film adaptation ever made because they at least get some things right. Vikander brings a vulnerability yet toughness to the role (doing most of her own stunts), West is appropriately fatherly and loving, the action set-pieces are high octane and exciting and the story follows the

game closely enough, giving the narrative a sense of familiarity and faithfulness. As with any other video game adaptation there are negatives to be highlighted. The game is set at nearly 10 hours long and so the film had to cut down the story to one fifth of that, making parts feel rushed and glossed over. The villain is as generic as they come and some of the green-screen can be a little ropey at times. In conclusion, fans of the game will be able to get a good amount of enjoyment out of this movie, casual moviegoers on the other hand will vary. Vikander is on top form and the action is well shot and choreographed, making for a fun popcorn flick, but those who want a little more substance in their action films may want to look elsewhere.  3/5

The teas begin on Sunday and Monday, May 27 and 28, and will run up to and include Monday, August 27. One of the organisers, Jenny Davis, said “This year we are doing a different theme every month consisting of a table-top exhibition. “Come along Sunday, May

27, or the Bank Holiday Monday, when the theme for May and June teas will be suffragettes, as it is 100 years since women got the vote. You will also be able to find out more about the themes we plan to feature, and their dates, while enjoying tea and cake. “We will be serving tea and homemade cake, and sometimes cream teas. Everyone makes their own cakes so it will be different each week.” Profits from the initiative will again go to church funds.

LETTERS Young would bring balance to politics Votes at 16 is an issue that has been discussed for many years. No one can deny that this will have a massive impact on how our politics work. The most important reason why we need votes at 16 is the votes cast effect the younger population much more than older generations. For example, many of those who voted leave during the Brexit vote were the older generations; furthermore studies show that if 16-yearolds were allowed the vote, the final decision may have been to stay in the EU. If we were given the option to advocate our views, that would create a fairer, balanced opinion in our politics nationwide. In the Scottish Referendum, 16-year-olds were allowed to vote. This persuaded over 100,000 16- to 17-year-olds to express their views. If this has been done in Scotland, I see no reason why we cannot have the right to vote in England. Allowing our votes at 16 would encourage more political action within the younger generations. For many years the UK has struggled to successfully influence young people to join in politics; to introduce a reduced age limit would inspire more of us to become involved. Some people may feel that 16- and 17-year-olds are lacking experience or knowledge and therefore should not vote. But 954,766 students took part in the Make Your Mark vote during September 2017. This proves the capability of young people to vote on something that matters to them. During the 2017 vote, 101,041 young people highlighted “Votes at 16” as the issue they felt most passionate about. This illustrates that young people are craving to have their opinion heard. In conclusion, I believe that 16- and 17-year-olds should be given the right to vote with immediate effect because it will provide a wider opinion base; it will form stronger links between the generations as well as getting younger people more engaged, involved and interested in

Moorland Struggle Quaint twisting and turn, grace unmeasured terrain.. Embark, enfold, risk my mind once was sane.... Drag forth and embrace, rough ground... am I near?? Am I close? am I worthy?... thus progress, thus endear... Dewy? once leafy? once enriched in deep soil... A meaning, a beginning, a truth of one’s toil....

Crackled stone and worn paving, how many have passed? As twilight engulfs me, would I be the last? No I'll struggle, thus continue.. I'll not falter in plight.. Spring clean collects 80 sack of rubbish

A mass litter pick saw teams of volunteers remove 80 sacksworth of rubbish from streets and public spaces around Keynsham. Teams of volunteers joined the two-hour spring clean organised by Keynsham Wombles, setting off from spots including the Lock Keeper pub, Dapps Hill, the Park Road and Dunster Road junction and Keynsham Allotments. As a reward, the volunteers were treated to tea and cake at Keynsham Bowls Club, with over 60 people joining the Wombles after their litter-picking efforts. Keynsham Beavers reported that they had found much less litter on their patch along Stoney Lane and the river than in previous years – but they did recover more broken plastic sledges than they were able to carry. Thanking everyone who took part in the event at the end of March, Chief Womble Erica Davies said: “The group down by the Lock Keeper pub found more

Bags collected from the riverbanks near the Lock Keeper pub, above; right, the Beavers found many abandoned plastic sledges dog poo bags than you would have believed possible, plus the usual bottles and cans and we always find at least one TV set! A lot of litter in that area comes from people throwing it out of their cars as they drive along the Willsbridge Road and when you start looking the quantities are

quite bewildering and far beyond the capacity of our volunteers to clear completely.” Wombles members were back out again on April 29 to tackle the areas around St Francis Church – with volunteers from Churches Together – and the playground in the Meadows.

The next big date for the diary is Keynsham Music Festival, when the Wombles will be litter-picking and recycling as much as they can from June 30 to July 2 as thousands of music lovers head to the town. Erica said more volunteers would be very welcome and added: “This is always a really fun event and gives us our highest profile in the town over the whole year – plus the money which is donated to our work for doing this can be used for any equipment we need during the year. “We work in two-hour shifts, which gives plenty of time to enjoy all the other events.” To find out more, email womble@transitionkeynsham. org or call 07713 417974.

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

Up with the lark for Dawn Chorus outing

T

he summer season got off to a flying start for Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham group with a busy and varied April schedule, writes chairman Dave Sage. The first event was the final talk of the winter season, given by Len Clark. He took more than 40 members on an illustrated “odyssey” of the birding hotspots of Spain, including the Pyrenees, Extremadura and the Gibraltar straits, the latter a crucial migration bottleneck between Europe and North Africa. He showed us great photos of griffon and Egyptian vultures, Spanish imperial eagles, wallcreepers and bluethroats, to name just a few! Before this talk, I gave a summary of the group’s year, including talks on swifts and sharks, and walks on the Mendips, at Chew Valley Lake, Bristol Downs, and Folly Farm near Bishop Sutton. Kathy Farrell then outlined the group’s financial success;

Up with the lark (and wrens and robins) for the Dawn Chorus an unprecedented £1,900 was forwarded to the trust to aid its vital conservation work. The second event started at 4.30am on a beautiful Sunday morning at Saltford Shallows; I was joined for the annual Dawn Chorus by 18 insomniacs – the youngest just nine years old. A mixture of new and existing members enjoyed hearing the birds start singing in a typical chronological sequence (robins followed by blackbirds,

Will Writing & Estate Planning

skylarks, song thrushes and wrens). Thirty-six bird species were heard and seen, including migrant blackcaps and chiffchaffs, beautiful bullfinches and the iridescent blue and orange flash of a kingfisher on the River Avon. I was given a unique opportunity to advertise this event on Radio Bristol a few days before, and to explain why it is so special. The final event was also advertised on Radio Bristol. This

was the Keynsham Bioblitz, a detailed survey of the wildlife found at four sites in and around Keynsham, carried out on the final Saturday of the month. This included pond dipping in Keynsham Memorial Park and Manor Road Community Woodland, as well as surveys at St Keyna Primary School and the “humpty-dumps”, a wildflower meadow near Durley Lane. A large range of plants, birds and invertebrates was found, highlighting the biodiversity of the area. The Bioblitz formed part of the City Nature Challenge, a global event involving 65 cities, including Bristol and Bath, on five continents. The rest of the summer includes walks to Dolebury Warren on the Mendips, Lower Woods near Wickwar, and Woodchester Mansion near Stroud, a haven for greater and lesser horseshoe bats. Contact Liz Wintle on 0117 909 9667 for more details.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Tales of Lundy

The society’s season of evening meetings ended on a high with a full hall enjoying an entertaining and informative talk on the Isle of Lundy. Andre Coutanche, who has been an active member of the Lundy Field Society for many years, showed a variety of photos as he described the personalities and lives of members of the Harman family, who owned the island from 1925 to 1968. Businessman Martin Coles Harman saw himself as king of Lundy and behaved as though it was not part of the UK. He issued his own stamps, which are still used, but fell foul of the law when he had coins – denominated in “puffins” – minted with his own head on, instead of the sovereign’s. Specimens of both stamps and coins were kindly loaned to the society for evening. The talk concluded with a film made at Bristol University, which interwove modern scenes and archive footage taken between the wars.

Keynsham’s French scientist

It is always exciting to discover new aspects of Keynsham’s past and our attention has recently been drawn to one of the town’s sons who seems to have been forgotten. Louis Felix Henri Audcent, known as Henri, was born in June 1875 on Dapps Lane, Dapps Hill in a house then known as Chambord Cottage. His parents had emigrated from France and were married in Taunton in 1874. They were keen to retain their French identity and Henri’s birth was registered with the French Consulate as well as the local registrar, so giving him dual British and French nationality.

The former Chambord Cottage as it is today, left; a puffin, emblem of the Isle of Lundy, above Henri’s early life was difficult. He did not live in Keynsham for long, as the family moved to St Andrew’s in Bristol when he was three. In the next three years, both his parents died, so Henri went to live with his grandparents in Taunton, returning to Bristol at the age of 12. He soon showed great aptitude in science; at 16 he was one of the very first to be awarded a free studentship by the City of Bristol to attend University College, Bristol. Unfortunately, Henri was unable to complete his university education, as shortly before his final exams he suffered a nervous breakdown brought on by overwork. Without a degree, but with an excellent grasp of the French language and a love of the natural sciences, Henri embarked on a teaching career in 1895. He taught

at schools around the country, before returning to Bristol in 1907 with a post at Fairfield Secondary School in Montpelier. Appointed to teach French, he would later teach botany and biology as well; one of his pupils was a certain Archie Leach who went on to earn fame as Cary Grant! In 1910, he married Henriette, from St Cloud near Paris, and they had three children. Staying at Fairfield Grammar for 31 years Henri became an admired and much-loved member of staff. Up to this point, his life had been unremarkable. He now had the opportunity to pursue his interest in biology, first as a botanist but soon moving to entomology (the study of insects). The many different species and the classification of them became his passion, and Henri’s life’s work was to become the order Diptera, which

are insects such as such as flies, mosquitoes and midges. Often, the different species can only be distinguished under a microscope. This field of work had been little studied in the 1920s; Henri set about remedying the situation with enthusiasm and wrote numerous scientific papers. Over the next 35 years he built up a collection, now in Bristol City Museum, of over 3,000 species of fly, which he collected on numerous field trips around Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset. Henri died in Clevedon in February 1951. His achievements were recognised by other entomologists subsequently by the naming of several species after him. (The information above is from a biography by Geoffrey Audcent)

Hockey club remembers Jo with festival A sports festival with a difference was held in memory of a muchmissed member of Keynsham Hockey Club. The inaugural Jo Bush Memorial Walking Hockey Festival on Sunday, April 15, saw people of all ages and abilities grab their sticks and head out onto the pitch for a series of short, fun matches. Keynsham Hockey Club members formed five squads for the day and were joined by friends, families and teams that had travelled from as far afield as the Midlands and Corsham. A spokesperson for the club said: “The spirit of the day was about having fun, connecting with old and new friends and enjoying the game at a different pace. For anyone who has yet to experience a walking sport, it is surprisingly difficult not to run and the resulting walking ‘styles’ can be, shall I say, ‘interesting’!”

The day was organised in memory of Jo Bush, who held many positions at the club, including chair. Refreshments were served from a pop-up café, along with cakes made by club members and fruit donated by Tesco, while a raffle was held with prizes from Harvem, Giles Sports and Doug Hillard Sports. The event raised £271 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, the charity chosen by Jo’s family. The walking hockey tournament was won by Bromsgrove No1, with Keynsham 5s second

The spokesperson added: “This event simply could not have happened without the support of so many of our Keynsham Hockey Club members. We had a team of umpires who gave up their whole day, players involved in our local Scout movement put up event shelters for us and set up a PA system and music. Some younger club members sold raffle tickets, acted as subs and lots of family members made rolls and

cakes, donated tea, coffee, milk and more. “The list of help people gave is endless, but it shows with some concerted group effort some great things can be achieved.” Keynsham Hockey Club will be holding regular walking hockey training sessions, with more information available at www. keynshamhockey.club Anyone interested in joining next year’s festival can email walkinghockey@keynshamhockey.club l Sport: Page 55

n NEWS Copyright: Phil Harding 2018

A photo of the original image painted in 1728 of what is now the Jolly Sailor pub on the River Avon at Saltford

Historic river scene returns to village pub An historic image depicting a busy 18th-century scene on the River Avon at Saltford is returning to the pub where it hung on the wall for more than 250 years. The painting was displayed over the fireplace in the Jolly Sailor until 1993, when it was sold at auction by Christie’s for £8,500. But now the original artwork has been traced by chair of Saltford Environment Group Phil Harding, as part of the group’s history project. Mr Harding got permission from its owner to visit and photograph the painting in high resolution, which is now being turned into a five-foot-wide print to be put on public display once more. He added: “It was very kind of the owner of this early 18th-century painting, who wishes to remain anonymous, to allow me to visit and photograph it in high resolution so that a full-size reproduction print can be displayed where the painting once hung for 265 years. It’s great to see the image it portrays back in Saltford again.” Jolly Sailor manager Shiva Saripilli said “The Jolly Sailor is grateful to Saltford Environment Group for tracing and photographing this famous painting so that we can display it here. “We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to come and see this historical record of life here at the Jolly Sailor in 1728.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction (Audio Book)

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer Set in 1946 and set out in a series of letters, this very popular book has just been made into a film starring Lily James as the main character, author Juliet Ashton. Juliet receives a letter from a complete stranger from Guernsey after finding her name inside a book. So begins a friendship through their letters and she is drawn into his world on the small island of Guernsey. She finds out about the eccentric world of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, born out of being used as a cover during the German occupation. She reads their stories during that difficult time and so decides to visit them, a meeting that will change her life forever. This audio book is read by Charlie Norfolk and is a charming, heart-warming story. The author has created brilliant, eccentric cast of characters who survived the deprivation, temptations and fear of being under enemy occupation. This book is always very popular in the library and will be even more so after the highly rated film.

Adult Non-Fiction

Up with the Lark by Joan Bomford Up with the Lark is my choice of outstanding read for the month and is by Joan Bomford – winner of the Countryfile farming hero award 2015. This is Joan’s wonderful account of her full life story, ongoing. She

always wanted to follow her father in his farming life, always wearing a tie (like her father), pestering him to let her help. As an eightyear-old she was the first in the family to drive a tractor. No job was ever too tough for her. Now in her eighties, she is still active, driving tractors, feeding the farm’s beef cattle and horses and still giving riding lessons. Told with the warmth and wit of a born storyteller, this is farmer Joan’s fast-moving account of a lifelong love affair with the land and the people who work on it. Reviewed, with thanks, by Keynsham Library customer John Taylor Only Pack What You Can Carry by Janice Holly Booth The subtitle of this book is “my path to inner strength, confidence and true selfknowledge”. Written in a lively style and published through National Geographic it is more of a travel guide than a self-help book. The author describes her travel adventures, from horseback riding in Costa Rica to hiking alone in the foggy forests of Northern California. However, she does outline four key states of “being and doing” that helped her through her adventures. This is a great read for both the novice and the seasoned lone traveller.

Young Adult Non-Fiction

The Reason I Jump by Niaoki Higashida The Reason I Jump is a beautifully written book. The author, surprisingly, wrote it when he was 13 and it opens your eyes to the world of autism. The Reason I Jump is almost like a guide to the challenges of autism. It really shows you how similar those diagnosed as autistic are to those who are not. It is a true treasure of a book. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a deeper insight into autism. It is a truly eyeopening novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reviewed by regular reviewer Erin Conlon, age 11 The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is one of his many amazing novels. It is definitely not among his scariest, but is thrilling, as Trish battles to survive in the darkness of the forest. But she is not quite as alone as she thinks. I thought this book was truly awesome. I was captivated by its uniqueness: all centred around the change in perspective when you are alone and afraid. Reviewed by regular reviewer Erin Conlon, age 11

Children’s Fiction

There are a number of books in the

children’s area in Keynsham Library that are labelled “My Story”. These books foster a love of both history and fiction by providing fictional stories in a solidly historical setting. One of these is: Pyramid of Secrets by Jim Eldridge (My Story Series) It is 2517 BC and 12-year-old Nebka lives in Egypt, working the fields for his miserable Uncle Minkaf. He misses his father, who died when Nebka was just six years old. The Nile floods and Nebka and his uncle are forced to leave their flooded fields to build the pyramid of Khafre for the Pharaoh. Here, Nebka meets a prisoner who claims to be the rightful heir to the throne and he is soon drawn into the mystery. Other books in the My Story series include topics on the Vikings, the Romans, the Plague, the Blitz and the trenches.

Rotary Club hands £1,000 to Alliance

Fundraisers from the Rotary Club of Keynsham have presented a local dementia charity with £1,000. The sum was raised at a concert held at St John’s Church in Keynsham in December and has now been presented to Alan Hale, chair of the Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance (KDAA), by club president Norman James at one of the group’s Memory Cafes. KDAA aims to make Keynsham and Saltford more “dementia

Organisers say numbers are steadily increasing at monthly coffee mornings held in Keynsham for people with Parkinson’s and their carers. Last month’s meeting, at the Talbot on Bath Hill, saw the group welcome Bristol tour guide Steve Spear, who shared stories of John Cabot’s exploits in the 15th century. A spokesperson said: “The atmosphere is friendly and lively, and offers a chance to circulate and meet others whose faces are becoming more familiar. Steve is a talented speaker, and with a good sense of humour made sure he had our full attention.” The group’s meetings take place on the last Tuesday of the

month at the Talbot Inn from 10.30am to noon. Parkinson’s patients, their helpers and people who want to find out more and become part of the Parkinson’s UK Bath and District branch are all welcome. The branch carries out fundraising and organises lunches, bowls, gentle exercise, dance and yoga. It also holds a monthly meeting with speakers, raffles and the chance to chat on the third Saturday of the month at the Foxhill Community Centre, Hawthorn Grove, Bath. Clarification In Issue 73 of Keynshamvoice, we included an article on the sale of knitted Easter chicks for charity. To clarify, Keynsham Girlguiding was one of a large number of local groups and individuals who contributed knitted chicks to be sold in aid of Children’s Hospice South West this Easter. The initiative has been running for around 18 years and last year raised more than

£3,700 for the cause, said co-ordinator Margaret Thompson. Mrs Thompson added that this year the chicks had brought in well over £2,000 for CHSW, with more proceeds still to be added to the final total. She said: “It started with just a small number of people knitting but has snowballed to where we have 30 or 40 people knitting the chicks each year. It’s a lot of work to be done but is so worthwhile for a great cause.” The misunderstanding was on our part and Keynshamvoice is happy to provide clarification.

Charity week returns

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Sarah Seymour, children’s, family and youth worker at Keynsham Methodist Church

A

family member recently said to me: “Relationships are like everything else in society these days, if it breaks you just throw it away.” And how true is this? Relationships are hard and they are messy and they definitely take work. But so often it is easier just to give up and move on, like we might do if we get a hole in an item of clothing or our phone battery doesn’t last as long as we might

like. Or we just get bored with something and decide we want something new. We forget that to make relationships last we have to invest time, patience and sometimes space after a heated argument. We need to remember to communicate; to talk and to listen equally. It won’t always be plain sailing, everyone has their ups and downs, their problems they need to work through and this takes time, dedication, respect and love. The deepest relationships will stand the test of time – stronger for having weathered the storms of life together. This made me think of the most perfect relationship I believe you can have – with God. The one person who I believe is there

always, whatever is going on, the one person who can listen without judgement, the one person who forgives all wrong things you have done. But just as you need to invest in relationships with people, so you also need to invest in your relationship with God. Spend time talking to Him, and give space to listen to His reply. It won’t always come as you expect but I believe if you are open to God’s voice, you will find it in the unexpected – a comment someone makes to you, something you see or read, a feeling within your heart, a change of circumstance, an opportunity opening up in front of you. Don’t give up on Him because He will never give up on you. He is always ready to listen.

Keynsham Churches Together is hosting two events to support Christian Aid Week, alongside the annual envelope collection from May 13 to 20. Breakfast is being served at Keynsham Baptist Church in the High Street between 9.30am and 12.20pm on Saturday, May 12, with a tombola stall and cakes and plants for sale. The following evening on, May 13, there will be a Christian Aid service at St John’s Church from 6pm. Last year the Keynsham community donated £7,308 to the cause, which supports people of all faiths and none living in poverty in more than 60 countries. Anyone who would like to get involved locally can call Shirley Sheppard on 0117 986 3723.

Rollercoaster ride puts Ks in third spot KEYNSHAM TOWN FC Man of the Match Craig Wilson receives his bottle of bubbly from mascot George Hopes and his family

News from the Crown Field It has been an amazing rollercoaster ride for Keynsham Town FC since Easter in the Toolstation Western League Division One, writes our correspondent. However, after a run of five successive wins since Easter, two draws in their last two games have seen the Ks almost definitely finish in third place at the time of going to press. Good Friday saw a bumper crowd of 217 brave the miserable weather to see Keynsham overcome local rivals Oldland Abbotonians 4-1. First-half goals from Ben Bament, Craig Wilson and Matt Brown put the Ks in control and despite the visitors pulling a goal back after the break, Brown finished things off in the last minute. A week later saw another team put to the sword at Crown Fields, as Calne Town were thrashed 5-1. Again the Ks were 3-0 to the good at half-time, with goals from Matt Long and a brace from Ben Bament, who went on to complete his hat-trick in the 70th minute. Substitute Kyle Box then added another after 87 minutes to send the home fans home with a smile on their faces. Next up was a midweek visit to Corsham Town on a cold April evening, which saw Keynsham come home with three more crucial points. After a tight goalless first half, Harley Purnell’s corner was helped into the net by Corsham’s keeper on 49 minutes. Ten minutes later, left back Nathan Curnock scored his first goal of the season with a great finish with his right foot. A late goal for the hosts led to an anxious last few minutes, but the Ks closed the game out to win 2-1. Keynsham’s first visit to another local rival, Bristol Telephones, saw them return

from Stockwood with a thumping 5-0 victory. Ban Bament scored after three minutes, before a Matt Brown brace put the Ks firmly in control by half-time. A rare Scott Saunders header made it 4-0 after the break, before Craig Wilson rounded things off with the goal of the game, thundering home a volley from 18 yards, which nearly broke the net. Welton Rovers then visited Crown Fields, but they could not cope with the Keynsham goal machine as the Ks won 4-0. Another great crowd of 159 saw an early Matt Brown effort settle any Keynsham nerves, but that was all they could muster in the first half. However, in the first 10 minutes of the second period, another Craig Wilson wondergoal from 30 yards was followed by the Welton keeper helping Harley Purnell’s shot over the line. Substitute Adey Harvey then headed home from a corner to give the scoreline a more convincing air. However, the following Tuesday night proved pivotal in the Ks’ season, as in driving wind and rain they let a two-goal lead slip at Radstock Town. It couldn’t have started better, with a typical Matt Brown poacher’s goal and a precision header from Matt Long in the first eight minutes. But the hosts roared back with two goals in the space of three minutes to level things up at half-time. The game could have gone either way in the second half, with Ben Bament coming the closest for Keynsham with a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar before bouncing into the grateful keeper’s arms. A 2-2 draw therefore left the Ks’ fate out of their own hands.

Another great Crown Fields attendance of 178 turned up for the last home game of the season, but the majority were in for an afternoon of disappointment, as Chippenham Park came from behind twice to snatch a 3-3 draw. The Ks were off their game in the first half, trailing for most of it until Matt Long popped up two minutes before the break to finish off a great flowing move. In a crazy second half, a wonderful strike from Nathan Curnock put Keynsham in front, only for the visitors to equalise immediately with a long-range effort that sailed over Ks keeper Matt Dunk’s head. Ben Bament restored the Ks’ lead after another great move, but again Chippenham restored parity almost immediately with a superb drive from 25 yards. The Ks threw the kitchen sink at the visitors’ goal, but they couldn’t fashion a winner. That result gifted Roman Glass St George promotion, and left Westbury United needing only one point from their last two games to join them in the Premier Division next season. This season has been a recordbreaking one for the Ks, with all four of their senior teams doing brilliantly in their respective divisions. The First Team have smashed their Western League goals record with an unbelievable 117 in the onion bag, and have also surpassed their best-ever points haul, standing on 89 points with one game to go. The attendances at Crown Fields are higher than ever before, with a League average gate of 126 being higher than most Premier Division teams. The A Team has finished second in the Bristol

and Suburban League Division 2, while both the Reserves and Under-18s will finish in the top four of their respective Somerset County divisions. As the curtain falls on another season, club secretary Julian French said: “I must thank some of the many people who have made our success this season possible. On the pitch, the new management team has been superb and the players have given us all some great moments to remember. The Ks’ senior teams have every reason to be proud of our achievements in 2017-18, and let’s hope we continue to build on these solid foundations next season and beyond. Off the pitch, I will be in trouble if I don’t mention my better half, Terrie, who has worked her socks off keeping all our fans fed and watered in the tea hut! “Massive thanks must also go to the club’s sponsors, including not only our loyal supporters with their player sponsorship, but R J Scaffolding, Smart Computers, The Old Bank, KitCo, Bargain Booze, Dribuild and I J McGill Transport, who have helped raise our profile and maintain our club’s financial position. Apart from the overheads of running four senior teams, such as affiliation fees, competition entry fees and player insurance, a lot of people probably don’t realise that just playing a game at Crown Fields costs the senior section of the club up to £300 (renting the pitch, floodlights, match officials’ expenses, players’ food, tea hut stock, laundry, programmes, etc), which soon tots up when we have four teams and in excess of 50 home games in a season.” The club will be celebrating their season at the annual Presentation Night, which will be held in the Conservative Club, Keynsham High Street, on Saturday, May 12, from 7pm. The evening is open to everyone, and it would be great to see as many of our community club’s loyal supporters there as possible. In the meantime, all the club’s news during the summer break can be followed on Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

Downpours delay games’ start for bowlers It has been many years since the start of the season at Keynsham Bowling Club has been delayed, writes our correspondent, but as a result of the wet weather in recent weeks the opening members’ roll-up of April 8, plus some friendly fixtures, were cancelled. The green was first used on Thursday, April 19, when the practice evening for the men’s league took place. A few ground rules have been put in place to try to reduce wear as the season progresses, such as players being asked to access

the green down the corner steps, altering the position of the mat and playing on all rinks and not concentrating on a few. The club’s open coaching sessions have now begun when qualified coaches will be available on Mondays and Saturdays at 11am to provide coaching to any experienced or new player who would like to get the feel of playing on “the green in the park”. All equipment, including shoes, will be made available and you will be assured of a warm welcome.

Badgers’ win an ‘excellent’ debut in league Bristol Baseball Club’s teams swept their opponents over the weekend of April 28 and 29, writes our correspondent. The Badgers, who were making their debut in the BBF AA central league, beat Cambridge Monarchs 5-3 and 22-8, while the Bats won a slugfest against the Newton Brewers 33-26.

“As a first performance in AA, it was excellent,” said Tom Hollies, the Badgers manager. “It was a great team effort and every player showed great dedication to putting in the best performance.” The Badgers welcome Stourbridge Titans to Somerdale Pavilion on Sunday, May 6, for a double header. The first game starts at noon.

Walking footballers walk away with trophy Keynsham Walking Football Club travelled to Strode College, Street, on April 26 and came away undefeated in a Somerset County Team competitive tournament of six teams. The team are shown being presented with their trophy by
