Council closes office over disruption from Riverside View work Keynsham Town Council’s offices have temporarily closed over concerns about dust and noise from the Riverside View development. The offices sit on the ground floor of the block in Temple Street, the upper floors of which are currently being converted into 95 apartments by Aequus Construction Limited – Bath and North East Somerset Council’s development company – and contractor Kier. Work began in July last year, with town council staff continuing to work from their premises behind hoardings put up on Temple Street. On Monday, April 8, however, staff were sent home and the office closed after dust, noise and vibration from a particular phase of work became “unacceptable”. The town council is now looking for temporary premises. Town clerk Cheryl Scott said: “The building construction works have reached a phase whereby noise, dust and vibration levels staff are experiencing have become unacceptable. The town council has a duty of care to its staff in respect of their health and safety and therefore shut the office at 2pm on Monday, April 8. “The town council is currently seeking temporary alternative accommodation for the staff until the dust levels in the office have

been removed and preventative measures have been taken in respect of more dust generation. The staff will continue to work remotely until the office has been thoroughly cleaned and even so there maybe times in future that we may have to shut the office temporarily if the builders are planning very disruptive works. “The contractors are providing the town council with a weekly programme of works that have been assessed for noise, dust and vibration risk and duration.” At the time of going to press, temporary accommodation hadn’t been finalised but anyone who wishes to contact the town council can leave a voicemail message on the council’s main number – 0117 986 8683 – which will be picked up each day or email townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk Kier was unable to provide a comment before Keynshamvoice went to print but a spokesperson for B&NES Council said: “Throughout this project both Bath and North East Somerset Council, Kier and ACL have been in regular contact with Keynsham Town Council with regard to any disruption to its premises and currently we are exploring the option of finding temporary desk space, which would be suitable for the needs of the town council.”

‘We can’t thank community enough for their support’

From Page 1 The charity describes its minibus as a lifeline and the attack came just two weeks before members of the Music Man Project were due to travel to London in the vehicle to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. The charity was already facing a “challenging time” after £150 of takings from one of its many clubs for people with learning difficulties was stolen from a member of staff. Hearing of their plight, however, supporters and members of the community rallied round and donated enough money to cover

almost the entire cost of the repairs after setting up an online appeal. With help from Ablefit Tyres and Exhausts in Brislington and Independent Welding Services in Kingswood, the bus was back on the road in plenty of time for the journey to London on April 15. Operations manager Laura Jefferies said: “We are completely overwhelmed by the support of the community who have come to our aid in our hour of need and we can’t thank them enough. For a self-funding charity that relies on donations and the help of the community these events

A man suspected of carrying out a series of robberies targeting people selling mobile phones via the internet, including one incident in Keynsham, has been arrested and charged following the launch of a £2 million police crackdown. The 20-year-old from Filton was one of a number people arrested in the first few days of Operation Remedy, which was launched by Avon and Somerset Police in April to address burglary, knife crime and the supply of illegal drugs. The man was charged with one count of GBH, five counts of possessing a knife in a public place, four counts of robbery, one attempt robbery and one count of theft. The charges relate to incidents in the Clifton, Harbourside and Horfield areas of Bristol, as well as Keynsham and Weston-super-Mare. He appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 5, where he was remanded into custody pending a further hearing at Bristol Crown Court due to take place on April 24. Suspected burglars, armed robbers and violent offenders were among those detained following the launch of the operation. Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “With Operation Remedy, communities will see and feel the difference in the police’s fight against crime, and we will be sending a loud and clear message to criminals that coming into our area to commit their crime is not an option.”

Group roll up sleeves to start work on creating town centre nature reserve group cleared it of soil and tree roots and hope it will form a key feature of the reserve and attract a wide range of wildlife. FAHLAG secretary Margaret Maxwell said: “Restoring this woodland is a community-based project, and we are hoping that much of the work can be done by volunteers. Already, we have had an encouraging response from local people and we want to build on this in future. There’s a lot to be done but with the support of the community, we are hopeful that the land will become a much-loved woodland space right in the centre of Keynsham.” The group is holding further working parties throughout the year, taking care during the spring and summer months so as to avoid damage to rare plants and nesting sites, and all are

Professionals drop in for a day of demos and fun at skate park

Keynsham’s skate park welcomed professional skateboarders and BMX riders for a day-long event during which young residents were asked for their views on the town’s parks, play areas and activities. Pro skateboarder Darrell Dominguez and Team GB BMX rider Jack Clark were among those demonstrating skills to young people and families who gathered in the Memorial Park for the event with King Ramps on Saturday, April 20. The long-awaited skate park lights have now also been installed by the town council, with three solar-powered columns providing light until 9pm each evening. The lights have been welcomed by youth council Keynsham Now after a lengthy campaign to have them installed and town clerk Cheryl Scott said: “This has been a very lengthy and arduous process and the town council would like to thank young people of Keynsham for their understanding and patience. “We do hope that the new

a good thing in terms of being able to give kids something to do besides being on the streets. It keeps them occupied in a really positive way, it’s healthy and it’s a good way to meet friends and build a social circle as well.” The event was hosted by Keynsham Town Council, which had staff on hand to invite youngsters to fill out surveys on local recreation areas and activities and what they would like to see in future as the authority draws up its Neighbourhood Development Plan. The youngest children were asked which of the town parks were their favourite, what equipment they liked to use most and were then invited to choose their favourites from a number of “themed” play areas, including castles, a pirate ship and treetop towers.

Work to create a nature reserve in the heart of Keynsham got under way last month – with volunteers even recovering a pond created around 30 years ago. The Fox and Hounds Lane Action Group led a working party to begin the task of clearing ivy, litter and unwanted scrub from the overgrown patch of land at the junction of Bath Hill and Fox and Hounds Lane. The site was listed for sale by Bath and North East Somerset Council last year and the action group was formed to keep it in public hands and turn it into a nature reserve. In total, 17 volunteers joined the clear-up and during the two days a pond that was created by students from Wellsway School in the 1980s was uncovered. The

Disco to help fund op for Rosie-May

A fundraising disco is being held in Keynsham to help a child born with cerebral palsy receive the treatment she needs to walk unaided. Jenna Lane, a Keynsham mum, is holding the event on Saturday, June 1, at Keynsham Rugby Club after being moved by the story of four-year-old Rosie-May Edwards from Weston-super-Mare and her mum’s bid to raise £80,000 to pay for spinal surgery in America. Jenna, who has organised five previous fundraising events to help other youngsters with different conditions, said: “I just know that if it was one of my children I would want to have as much help as I could possibly get.” The event, which starts at 7pm, will also feature a raffle and auction and tickets, at £5 for adults and £2.50 for under-12s, are available from Jenna on 07493 191579.

Keynsham store puts plastic recycling scheme to the test A Keynsham supermarket has become one of the first in the country to test a new recycling scheme – just over a year after it was the first to be targeted in an anti-plastic campaign that spread around the world. Tesco customers will be able to return hard-to-recycle soft plastics like food pouches and crisp packets to the shop, which is one of 10 taking part in the trial. Collection bins have been installed and, using a process developed by Recycling Technologies, the waste plastic dropped off at the shops will be turned back into oil and then used to make new plastic. In March last year, Keynsham’s Tesco store hit the headlines when shoppers staged a “plastic attack” as part of the Keynsham Plastic Re-

Similar protests have since been carried out at supermarkets across the country and in other parts of the world after news of the Keynsham campaign spread. Tesco estimates that if the plastic collection scheme is rolled out to all of its stores it will make 90 per cent of its own-label packaging recyclable. Tesco’s director of quality Sarah Bradbury said: “Reducing and recycling plastics is such an important issue for us, for customers and for the future of our planet. “That’s why we are working hard to reduce the amount of packaging in our stores and have committed that all remaining

packaging will be recyclable by 2025. “Our trial with Recycling Technologies will make even more of our packaging recyclable and help us reach our target. “This technology could be the final piece of the jigsaw for the UK plastic recycling industry.” Keynsham Plastic Re-Action has hailed the scheme an “improvement” but said there must still be a focus on moving away from plastics. The 10 stores taking part are: Keynsham Superstore; Bristol Lime Trees Road Superstore; Yate Extra; Bristol Brislington Extra; Bristol Staple Hill Metro; Bristol East Extra; Cirencester Metro – Farrell Close; Cirencester Extra; Swindon Extra; Tetbury Superstore.

School highlights food waste at meal Dozens of people tucked into a feast made from food that would otherwise have gone to waste to highlight the work of a local charity. Chandag Infant School hosted the two-course “Surplus Supper”, with chicken chilli and fruit fool, to mark its caterers’ new partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Children, parents and members of the community heard Phoebe Ruxton and Lucy Bearn from FareShare explain how the organisation gives out ten tonnes of food to charities and community groups around Bristol each week. FareShare is now providing school caterer Zest with food for breakfast clubs at two of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust’s secondary schools, Wellsway and Sir Bernard Lovell Academy. Funds raised from ticket sales and a raffle at the supper went to support FareShare.

Annual duck race off after 23 years For the first time in 23 years, Keynsham’s annual charity duck race will not be taking place this summer, organisers have confirmed. The fundraising event has been a popular part of the programme at Keynsham Music Festival every year since 1996, taking place on the Sunday afternoon in Keynsham Memorial Park. Organised by Keynsham and District Lions Club, around 1,500 ducks are released into the River Chew from the bridge near the Bandstand with prizes for the people whose sponsored ducks are first to cross the finish line. There has also been a separate race for ducks sponsored by local businesses. The event has raised around £30,000 for local charities and good causes over the years but it will not return this summer, the

Lions Club has announced. A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately with dwindling membership and infirmity, the Lions Club have been having difficulty staffing this event. Although we have received offers of help from individuals and organisations, this assistance has not come to fruition. “It is therefore with regret that the Keynsham and District Lions Club will not be running a duck race at the 2019 Music Festival. We thank all members of the public who have supported us over 23 years of running this popular event.”

ith the clocks changing and the days getting longer the crime figures slowly increase. This is no surprise to us and you can plot the time of year by the crime figures and the types of offences that are being committed. As a force we continue to suffer with vehicle crime where mainly vans are being targeted – although it’s a pain I’d suggest removing all tools from vehicles overnight. Think about how and where you park, whether it’s overlooked, what the access is like. Also think about the value of the tools you have in the vehicle and make sure you have adequate security measures in place. Social media is a great tool for us and we monitor the local

We will soon be opening a Keynsham Police Facebook page – it will be a way of us sharing what is going on in the area, where we will be running our beat surgeries and what other events we will be attending

pages to get a flavour of what is going on. There are a number of reports of both stolen motorcycles and pedal cycles all around Bristol and we have suffered a couple of offences this month. We will soon be opening a Keynsham Police Facebook page and I will update you when this is going online. This will not be a way of reporting crime but will be a way of us sharing what is going on in the area, where we will be running our beat surgeries and what other events we will be attending. Social media continues to grow but needs close monitoring. I continue to advocate checking children’s social media usage and monitoring their contacts to make sure that they are staying safe while online. If you

don’t know about it or understand it then you need to get outside of your comfort zone and learn. Following on from the reports of knife crime in Keynsham I have been asked to bring to your attention that a number of our police stations have knife amnesty bins. These bins are situated at the front of the police stations. They are bright red and have a nonreturn access point. The closest one is at the Police Centre on Ashmead Road. If you or someone you know has some knives that they would like to dispose of safely then please bring them along and deposit them in the bin or contact your local neighbourhood team and we’ll collect them. Anti-social behaviour generally

rises this time of year due to the lighter evenings. If you see any behaviour that you are not happy with, please report it to us. We don’t have masses of downtime so it’s really important that we make sure we are attending our hotspots to deal with any issues that arise. We have been regularly patrolling the Memorial Park in the evenings and engaging with its users. We have continued to run our traffic operation dealing with concerns you have raised that weight limits in Keynsham are being ignored. We also use a police car fitted with an auto number plate recognition (ANPR) camera and have been stopping and seizing uninsured vehicles. We have also been given new powers to seize untaxed vehicles. It’s surprising, since the removal of the visible tax disc, the amount of vehicles that are used without tax. It could be a very expensive gamble as not only would you have to pay all back tax on the vehicle, you would also have to pay for the removal and storage of the vehicle. If unsure, you can check online that your vehicle has MOT and is taxed.

Hilda raises toast to a happy 100th with A miner’s daughter who puts her longevity down to adopting a vegetarian diet “before it had even been invented” has just celebrated her 100th birthday at her Keynsham home. Hilda Taylor, a resident at Charterhouse care home in the Chocolate Quarter, marked her milestone with family, friends and carers as she reminisced about her childhood and working life. She was born on April 1, 1919, in Radstock as the eldest of eight and enjoyed “a lovely childhood”. She said: “We had nothing, but had everything. My father was miner, but the bosses would fix it so they only worked enough days so as to not be eligible to claim unemployment benefit.” She added: “I passed my exams to go to grammar school, but couldn’t go as Mother couldn’t afford the uniform. My

HIlda Taylor with Charterhouse general manager Roger Hayward place went to a girl whose father worked on railways. She was a complete duffer. I really wanted

to go to grammar school and be a teacher, but I didn’t have a dog’s chance in hell.”

Instead, at 14 she left school to go into domestic service at a house in Lansdown Crescent in Bath, later being put in charge of the household to oversee the other staff. She said: “I always thought Lansdown Crescent was better than Royal Crescent as it was higher up and you could look out right across Bath. I worked in number 10 – the middle house – I could take you there now. They were a lovely family. “There were six staff including me and I also had to cook for the family. The good thing was we ate the same as they ate, so we ate very well. “It was very much like Upstairs, Downstairs. When the lady of the house was going out and you were down in the basement, you could look up out the window and see her feet going by towards the car. Mind, we had to keep out of way so we wouldn’t be seen!”

family and friends Moving to London with her sister, Hilda worked in the house of a film critic for the Daily Herald, before she met her first husband James, who was in the Coldstream Guards, at a dance in Radstock during the Second World War. They married in 1941 and James was stationed in the UK during the war, meaning they could live in married quarters in Windsor. After the war they ran three pubs together in Windsor and High Wycombe. Hilda’s second husband, also called James, was the Senior Master Tailor of the British Army. As well as making uniforms for the Coldstream Guards, he also made uniforms for members of the royal household and would return to their home in Oxfordshire and tell Hilda that he’d measured the Prince of Wales’ inside leg. Hilda also travelled

extensively in America after her aunt emigrated there. Discussing her longevity, Hilda said: “The only person who had meat was the man of the house. Everyone else more or less lived off what we had in the garden. I was a vegetarian before it had even been invented. “I played a lot of netball and we didn’t have a car for years, so I walked everywhere. I had a go at smoking, but didn’t like it. I still enjoy the occasional glass of wine and I like a bit of cake or chocolate within reason.” Roger Hayward, general manager of the Chocolate Quarter, said: “It was a pleasure for everyone at Charterhouse to celebrate this special milestone with Hilda and her family. “Hilda is a real example to us all of how to make the most of every day and she’s always at the heart of everything that’s going on at Charterhouse.”

A special event to help people unlock the secrets of their family history is being held in Keynsham in May. Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society is hosting the one-off session to help anyone who has ever wondered who they might be descended from – maybe even royalty – to start finding answers to their questions. The group says researching family history is an absorbing pastime that can reveal many unexpected and fascinating facts about researchers’ forebears. It can, however, be difficult to know where to begin, how to go about the research and what resources are available, such as websites. The family history session will be led by Bob Lawrence from the Bristol and Avon Family History Society. Bob is a previous chairman of the society and currently

manages its research centre at Bristol Archives. Family historian Geoff Gardiner said: “This is an excellent introduction to the subject and will help anyone thinking of starting to research their family. “We hope it will lead to further sessions where small groups will be able to focus on particular areas of interest.” The event will be held at the Fear Hall, in Keynsham High Street, with admission from 2.15pm for a start at 2.30pm, on Tuesday, May 21. There will be a charge of £5 on the door to cover costs and everyone is welcome.

Donated van keeps foodbank moving

Clive Howarth holding the ‘Dando Bird’

A golden opportunity for the ‘Dando Bird’ An eighteenth-century weathervane that is a familiar sight on top of a local church has been taken away for a new coat of gold, writes Ros Anstey. The “Dando Bird” from St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando hadn’t been rotating for some time so some visiting steeplejacks were asked to take a look as they carried out checks on the church’s lightning conductors. They found that the weathervane, which is in fact a dragon not a bird and was installed in 1757, needed new bearings and

re-gilding with gold leaf, a treatment last carried out more than 20 years ago. The work, which will cost around £1,000, will be funded by the Compton Dando Church Estate Trust, which was established in 1530 by the last prior of Bath Abbey, William Holloway, and lawyer David Brook. Local historian and one-time chair of the trust Joe Bettey has produced detailed research into the origins of the trust and copies are available by contacting steward Lorna Howarth.

Margaret Barnes, Betty Weeks and Jill Greenslade with the tree

Group sponsors tree to mark end of an era Members of a club for local gardening enthusiasts which is closing down after 80 years have sponsored a tree in Keynsham Memorial Park. The Snow Goose flowering cherry will be sponsored by Keynsham and Saltford Gardeners’ Association for the next 10 years and the group say they hope it will be enjoyed by visitors to the park for many years to come. Following the decision to disband, members have also split remaining money from the club’s funds between St Peter’s Hospice, Dorothy House Hospice, Guide Dogs and the Hedgehog Trust, with each

receiving £225. The group has one informal meeting planned for May and a final trip to Barrington Court in June, with many members planning to get together with friends they have made over the years even after the club is no more. A spokesperson said: “Thanks are due to Ted and Sylvia Hewer for their hard work organising the shows, writing the newsletter and generally keeping the committee in order! Their efforts have been much appreciated.” The association was founded in 1934 and met regularly at the Fear Hall, but falling membership led to the decision to disband.

Volunteers at Keynsham Foodbank tasked with collecting donated food have been given a helping hand in the shape of a free van. The former police forensic investigation van has been donated to the charity by the Wheels Project and Avon and Somerset Police and is already getting plenty of use as the team pick up crates of food from local supermarkets and deliver them to distribution centres. The Ford Transit Connect van has plenty of miles on the clock but is ideal for the foodbank’s weekly runs and saves volunteers having to use their own vehicles. Collection and replenishment team manager Heather Maynard said: “The van will make a massive difference to our operation and it will relieve

our wonderful volunteers from needing to put the condition of their personal vehicles at risk by carrying plastic crates full of foodstuff. “The team has already taken to using it regularly and the van has also been used to take food to those outside of Keynsham who cannot reach the distribution centres easily.” The van was renovated by seven students from Keynsham who joined the Wheels Project, in Brislington, one day a week for training in motor vehicle studies and chose to present the vehicle to the foodbank. Independent Vet Care, which is based at The Chocolate Quarter, has donated £500 to help cover insurance and tax on the van for the next year as well as running food collections and fundraising for the foodbank.

Meet the candidates hoping to win a seat at the Guildhall with your votes

This month’s photograph shows a Saturday lunchtime queue outside Hedges’ Fish & Chip shop in Temple Street in March 1962. Hedges’ was the successor to Ogbourne’s chip shop and was on the corner of Rock Road and Temple Street. After it was demolished and the road widened, Foster’s clothes shop was built on the site which is now occupied by Specsavers. For years it was Keynsham’s only fast food takeaway with queues stretching around the corner! Image taken from the Russell Leitch collection of slides

REFRESH YOUR TIRED KITCHEN by just swapping the doors and worktops

Residents across Bath and North East Somerset are heading to the polls once again on Thursday, May 2; not for a general election – just yet – but to choose the people who will take a seat at Bath’s Guildhall and represent them on B&NES Council for the next four years. The three major parties – Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrats – are fielding candidates in Keynsham East, North, South and Saltford, with representatives from the Green Party, BIG Independents (Bath and North East Somerset Independent Group) and UKIP also contesting some of the local seats. It’s certain there will be two new councillors for Keynsham East and one in Keynsham North, with Bryan Organ, Charles Gerrish and Marie Longstaff all stepping down. In Saltford, Francine Haeberling is also not standing for re-election. The Conservatives will be hoping to hold onto the majority they won in the election four

years ago – the first time one party had held overall control of the authority since B&NES was created in 1995. The Liberal Democrats, the largest opposition party following the 2015 election when they lost their control of the council after four years, will be hoping to regain some of the seats lost at the last vote while Labour is also hoping to build its share and even end the traditional swing between Tory and Lib Dem leadership. While each of the parties have released local manifestos pledging to tackle issues from congestion to housing, as usual the state of affairs at Westminster will probably play

a large part in residents’ choices at the ballot box – and with the current upheaval over Brexit it remains to be seen who will be the winners and losers. Dissatisfaction with the big three parties can obviously lead to gains for the smaller groups and the Green Party is hoping to build on momentum from 2015 when it won its first ever seats on the council and has put forward candidates in most wards, including Keynsham South and Saltford. BIG Independents, meanwhile, say they want to free the Guildhall from national party politics and “the dead hand of meaningless tradition” after forming in 2017 and are fielding

11 candidates, including two in Keynsham. Yet to win a seat on the council, UKIP’s local branch is campaigning in its third B&NES election (not including byelections) and has put forward five candidates, including two in Keynsham. We have invited all Keynsham East, North, South and Saltford candidates to send us a short profile of themselves and their ambitions for the ward they are standing in. Find them all listed by ward and in alphabetical order on the following pages. Note: Keynshamvoice is politically independent. All parties were given the option of having a paid-for advert in this month’s issue.

There is a continuing need for more housing throughout the area and all new developments must include a quota of affordable housing. B&NES council should start building social housing again.

Seeing public consultations that were not consultations at all persuaded me to stand for Keynsham and Saltford, in the Keynsham East ward. We will undergo massive changes in the next few years, in transport, housing, NHS and social care, and our environment. Being free from party political influence, I can truly represent the best interests of residents and businesses and their concerns to shape these changes to our best advantage. Together, I believe, we can truly make a difference. Make your voice count this May, think local and vote BIG.

Mathew was raised with his family in Saltford and attended both Saltford and Wellsway Schools. He now lives in Dragons Hill Gardens, Keynsham. He is a Bath Rugby supporter and season ticket holder. Mathew has previously served as a Bath and North East Somerset councillor for Saltford and a chair of Saltford Parish Council, where he used the positions to successfully fight off any proposed development on the green belt. He will bring that knowledge and experience to fight for Keynsham East. Mathew’s number one priority is the protection of what remains of our precious green belt.

Keith Burchell Labour Keith Burchell is retired and has lived in Saltford for more than 10 years. He is currently chair of the Labour Party branch in Keynsham and Saltford. Keith wants to deal with traffic congestion and improve road safety, particularly in Wellsway, Bath Hill and Avon Mill Lane. Action must be taken to improve air quality around the town. Keynsham High Street is in decline and B&NES Council must act to improve retail opportunities throughout the area. Keith also wants to see action to improve economic opportunities following the loss of local employers. He will also campaign for improvements to facilities for young people in Keynsham and wants to protect and improve the library service.

I had a key role in advocacy, giving a voice to those people who were not heard, and in shaping the development of the service. Believes in Keynsham – Nathan believes Keynsham has a lot of potential, however high rents in the High Street have seen attractive businesses fade away. Nathan would like to see a variety of independent and franchised businesses to attract more visitors. Roads – It’s no secret that the one-way system implemented in our High Street has received mixed reviews, with some feeling their voices were not heard. Nathan would like to give a greater voice to residents in regards to any future highway changes. Roadworks – Better planning for scheduled roadworks at entry/exit points of Keynsham. Recent times have seen multiple roadwork sites on all major roads leading to and from Keynsham, causing mayhem. Supporting lower taxes – Nathan

She and her husband have four children in local schools and preschools. Elizabeth trained as an orthodontic nurse and dental radiographer and is currently working in the local primary school. She attends St Mary’s Church in Saltford, where she also runs a thriving parent and toddler group. She is a volunteer with Girl Guiding, helping run 1st Saltford Brownies, and also enjoys singing and amateur dramatics, appearing most recently as the Queen of Hearts in Saltford Panto Group’s Alice in Pantoland. Elizabeth is passionate about investing in the future of the region, which is why she has chosen to stand for election. She cares deeply

Emma Dixon Conservative Emma Dixon is a lifelong resident of the area and lives in Saltford where she and her husband are bringing up three young girls. Emma works at Saltford Primary School as a teaching assistant and when she is not being a busy mother and can find some spare time, she can often be found running the streets or enjoying a karate lesson, both of which are hobbies she enjoys immensely. Since being elected in 2015 as a ward councillor for Saltford, Emma has been kept pretty busy working tirelessly with many organisations, including the parish council and B&NES Council, to represent

Saltford's voice and needs. Emma hopes to continue sticking up for residents in Saltford and also the residents of the parishes of Corston, Newton St Loe and Compton Dando, all of which will become part of the Saltford ward at the forthcoming council elections in May. As a lifelong resident of the area, she has extensive links to and knowledge of all the villages in the new Saltford ward and will represent all the villages with equal dedication and enthusiasm.

Stuart Dobson Green Party I went to school in Bath, left to go to uni, came back permanently in 2001. I’m married with two children. I work for an accountancy practice in Saltford. I joined the Green Party for many reasons: the coherent approach to looking after the

planet, social justice and welfare, energy and education policies, and renationalising the rail network. We are the only party to have consistently rejected “austerity” and provide a fairer alternative. I am concerned about privatisation and distribution of assets created with tax revenues to private companies, especially the NHS and education, and the ensuing redistribution of wealth to the wealthiest members of society. I ride a bike as much as possible for transport and for fun, and I would like to make the Bath area a safe place to cycle for everybody, not just the brave, or foolhardy. Bath’s Transport Strategy needs to focus on reducing traffic levels and therefore air pollution, better public transport, and overall an improved infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. As a councillor I would aim to support local business creating high-value jobs, promote local energy production and energyefficient homes.

Residents will also be invited to elect new councillors to Keynsham Town Council on May 2 – although four of the 15 seats will be filled without an election. The council has been dominated by the Conservatives for the past four years but this year residents won’t find the party named on their ballot papers. In a bid to “take party politics out” of the town council, the local group said it would not field candidates – although some previously on the council as Conservative councillors are standing. Labour and the Liberal Democrats can already guarantee they hold at least some of the seats as there won’t be an election in Keynsham South. Only four people put themselves forward for the five seats, meaning Dave Biddleston and Rachael King of Labour, Andy Halliday of the Lib Dems, and Allan Sinclair have all been elected without contest. With nine candidates standing for the five seats in each of

the other two wards, however, elections will go ahead in Keynsham North and Keynsham East. In Keynsham East, the candidates are: Caitlin Brennan (Lib Dem); Keith Burchell (Lab); Judith Cron; Clive Fricker (Independent); Alan Greenfield (Lib Dem); Jeffrey Isaac; Hal MacFie (Lib Dem); Andy Wait (Lib Dem); John Wood (Lab). In Keynsham North, the candidates are: David Brassington (Lib Dem); Tony Collings; Daniel Condick; Deborah Cooper (Independent – no party affiliation); Tony Crouch (Independent); Christopher Davis (Lab); Andy McGuinness (Lab); Brian Simmons; Jonathan Wallcroft (Lab). In Saltford, where the parish council is traditionally non-political, there are 12 people contesting the 11 seats on the council. They are: Adrian Betts; Marie Carder; Will Feay; Jon Godfrey; Gary Graveling; Phil Harding; Duncan Hounsell; Robert King; Adam Rees-Leonard; Rob Taylor; Sally Turner and Chris Warren.

They will also meet a number of Land Rover rugby ambassadors during their visit. Counting down the days until the final, one member of the squad said: “It’s amazing to be chosen as the winning team – I can’t quite believe we have made it to Twickenham.” Another one of the U11s added: “I’m proud for my club and all my teammates we have been recognised. It makes me feel honoured we have been chosen by the other clubs.”

MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET’S PCC

Working together for stronger community Supporting and reflecting our ‘ diverse communities is an important S part of my role tronger communities are safer communities. However, strong communities can only thrive if we continue to develop our relationships, working together as residents, local people and the police. So I was pleased to see the police and the local community coming together to celebrate the opening of a new memorial garden in Castle Park in Bristol. The memorial honours 83,000 Sikh soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It is of the utmost importance that we remember that in both wars Sikh soldiers, as well as people of other faiths, stood shoulder to shoulder to form part of the British Army. The memorial is a wonderful place that the old and young alike can visit and remember the bravery of the Sikh soldiers. Supporting and reflecting our diverse communities is an important part of my role and a specific priority within my Police and Crime plan. I was therefore

delighted to attend the new Bristol Muslim Strategic Leaders Group; this important group is looking at ways our Muslim communities can be more involved within our public services. Making sure our public services not only reflect the communities they serve with the people they employ but also that the service reflects their needs and those of their community is absolutely essential. n I really welcomed the national ‘Make Yourself Heard’ campaign that aims to raise awareness of a silent 999 system. The Silent Solution system enables 999 mobile callers who are too scared to make a noise or to speak to press 55 when prompted, informing police that they are in a

genuine emergency. There could be occasions where speaking out loud is not possible or would put you in more danger, and that is why knowing about the 55 service is important. We need to ensure everyone knows about the system, as in extreme situations, it could potentially save lives. The campaign was launched during National Stalking Awareness Week. On average, around 100 incidents take place before a stalking crime is reported and we need to encourage victims to come forward and seek help from either the police or other agencies. We need to bust the myth that stalking involves someone sitting in the bushes outside your house; stalking can include persistent and unwanted behaviour that

ir pollution is big news, and rightly too, given that it’s responsible for the premature deaths of up to 40,000 people in the UK each year. Banning the worst polluting vehicles from city centres goes some way to reducing the risks, but the fact is that all petrol and diesel cars emit polluting particles, and it’s not just city centres that suffer. Until we’ve transitioned entirely to electric cars, buses and lorries, people living and working in our towns and cities will remain at risk. Another way of getting cars off our streets is to encourage cycling and walking. B&NES say they’ll spend 15 per cent of their £2.8 million transport infrastructure budget on cycling and walking improvements in 2019/20. I think it should be more. As well as focusing on the cycle routes we already have, money should be spent on local infrastructure in suburban areas – making car-free routes to school and into Keynsham High Street from the new developments

would be a great start. In Scotland, the government gives people grants to buy electric bikes. In a hilly town like Keynsham, this would be a great way of encouraging more people onto two wheels. E-bikes still give you exercise, but also an extra boost up Bath Hill or Queens Road! I’d love to see B&NES Council running a scheme like that. Until society stops treating the car as king, we won’t get more people on bikes (or walking). The way we talk about cycling only entrenches the status quo. When newspapers report that “a cyclist has been knocked off his bike by a lorry”, they actually mean that “a person driving a lorry swerved into a person riding a bike”. Sounds much worse, doesn’t it? If we see everyone on the road as people – and as equals – maybe we’ll all have more respect for each other on the roads, and more adults and children taking up cycling for their own health and that of their community.

Walking after Midnight When the clocks strike midnight, and the streets are dark, the world suddenly becomes a strangely quiet place. It takes courage to put on your coat and go for a walk. What are you doing an inner voice asks, you should be tucked up in bed not out in the dark. The door closes behind you, the die is cast and you wander into an unknown world. You feel very small, but excited as well, as you gaze up at the stars and the halfmoon so far off. Then your eyes become accustomed to the dark and things take on shadowy shapes; it’s like looking through a thick veil. The pile of clothes in a doorway is really a homeless man sheltering from the cold, with only his dog to keep him warm. You have nothing to give him, only your woolly hat and scarf. Thanks, he grunts, God bless you. Those were words you had not expected to hear. Hurrying on by you pass a shop, its interior lights on, all the tills open to show they are empty, hoping to avoid unwelcome callers.

The sound of a car approaching fast makes your heart race, and then you notice the flashing blue lights, they light up the night and dazzle your eyes but it cannot stop; it has to get its passenger to hospital fast. Whose mother, father, sister or brother are they trying to save? You turn down a road that will lead you back home. A fox comes towards you and rushes past; it has a family to feed. You feel a rush of wind on your face and realise an owl has flown silently by. Night animals that hide from us during the day are hunting for food for themselves and their families. Around the next corner there’s a welcome sight. You are home again to a tasty hot chocolate and a nice warm bed. Good night and God Bless! Erica Andrews

How our gardens can hold the key to species’ comeback with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

W

hat an excellent way to finish the 2018/19 season, writes vice-chair Philippa Paget. Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group’s speaker in April, Chris Sperring OBE, was thought-provoking and thoroughly inspirational. He’s locally, nationally and internationally recognised for his work with owls and work to promote ways to help our natural environment. He works locally with people, spreading his wide

knowledge and understanding of wildlife, and influencing decisions at government policy level. Chris stated that we are in the midst of a mass plant and animal extinction on a scale worse than when dinosaurs died out, and explained how countries such as Sweden are re-wilding to great effect, while in France the drastic drop in insect numbers led to the banning of certain insecticides. Where Chris lives in Portishead he overcame doubters with a hugely successful habitat project for barn owls. Wildlife thrives alongside the new housing development in wild areas enjoyed by local people. Human benefit is vital in getting his message across and for sustainability of long-term projects. Over the last few weeks Chris

Chris Sperring OBE has been working with the Forestry Commission to mark its 100th anniversary, and the Hawk and Owl Trust’s 50th, with night surveying for the beautiful long-eared owl. Sadly their numbers have seriously declined over the last 10 years due to lack of good habitat on the edges of forests. Working together, he believes, will bring improvements. Chris told us he is not a gardener, but he knows how to re-wild his garden and this is where he gets inspiration for his work. Gardeners are the key to urban success in linking green spaces. Chris said it’s fact that the urban

environment and gardens are often better habitat than the countryside, which is still too often grazed to the level that would be more suited to play golf than for insects! He encouraged us to do what we could in our own gardens. With small changes, species such as the rare yellow legged mining bee could benefit. We should allow our lawns to grow daisies and dandelion etc, plant red valerian for a wide range of insects, goat willow for honey bees and avoid using chemicals. He explained how, with a healthy bird population, house sparrow, wren and dunnock can do the work of the chemicals for us, eating insects and feeding their young. And blackbirds and thrushes eat snails from uncut grassy edges. To bring back the balance of nature, Chris planted fruit-bearing plants such as cherry tree and hawthorn in his garden and he supplements the wild food by feeding birds 12 months of the year. But on top of what we can achieve ourselves, Chris advocates saving taxpayers money and suggests we target our councillors over money spent unnecessarily

on the over-cutting of grass verges, parks and green spaces. These should be cut less often, giving a financial saving and a better habitat for nature. Councils also need to consider nature in all of their planning process, with long-term goals that will last for generations not just as short-term projects. Local populations should be involved in the decision-making process, with clear explanations about the changes being proposed and the benefits that will be gained for them and nature. People will also take greater ownership and responsibility for projects they have been involved in. He advocates urban areas have at least 30 per cent tree cover, verges left for somewhere for pollinators to live and investment in hedgerows in congested areas to alleviate pollution. He explained the importance of building relationships and working with people so changes can be accomplished. Chris summed up that “figures for wildlife are down, but things can be done about it". A light at the end of the tunnel is achievable with co-operation!

Walk puts the focus on wildlife photography Our field trip on April 6 and 7 to Willsbridge Valley was taken over two days – numbers were limited so as not to scare away the birds, writes AWT committee member Liz Wintle. On each day, six AWT members were taken around the reserve by wildlife photographer Mike Dimery. He gave us lots of advice about how to get great shots we would be proud of, even if we hadn't spent more on a lens than a car (which he had!). We saw, and photographed, blue tit, great tit, black cap, longtailed tit, coal tit, tree creeper, goldcrest, wren, robin, dipper, jay, buzzard, grey wagtail, wood pigeon, dunnock, magpie and raven. There were also orange-tip and comma butterflies and buff-tailed bumblebees when the sun came out. Mike advised us to try to focus on the bird’s eyes, in particular the “catchlights” or reflections which bring the picture to life, as well as to take lots of shots as

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult DVD

Bohemian Rhapsody (12) This is a wonderful film – joyous and also a little bittersweet. The story is really a rock biography of the supergroup Queen and in particular focuses on their dynamic singer, Freddie Mercury. The actor Rami Malek won the Best Male Actor award in this year’s Oscars ceremony and rightly so. His portrayal of Freddie is brilliant – he captures his performances really well and his complicated personal life. The film starts in the late 1960s and finishes with Queen’s amazing performance at Live Aid in 1985. Queen’s songs and hits are played throughout the movie with a great scene describing how the group formulated the title song, Bohemian Rhapsody, which nobody thought would be a hit as it was felt it was too long for radio play – how wrong that was! A great film.

complicated. Not only does she get a change of job title, but there is a sudden announcement that the fields surrounding the area are being primed for redevelopment, including the one her grandfather has unofficially adopted as his own. Added to the mix is a shock split with her husband after 20 years of marriage. With the support of some friends, colleagues, parents and villagers, she endeavours to take on the challenge of halting the building work. During the school break, a well-deserved holiday is taken, but she can’t escape her worries when she crosses paths with the enemy, the son of the developer. Returning home to revelations about both herself and her family, Cassie has a lot of emotional decisions to make. This is an easy-to-read tale, with some funny little bits thrown into the mix with the children’s antics. If you like reading Gervase Phinn and Katie Fforde, this story is for you. uncover the mystery of his life by embarking on an adventure that will bring him to Norway. I had some difficulties with the style adopted by Chloe Daykin in this children’s novel. I had to convince myself that it was intended as a story told by a confused teenage boy, who can’t put action, words and description when and where it should appear. The story is in itself interesting and in the hands of someone else would have deserved to be more developed, but I stayed in a state of confusion all the way. Even if it is supposed to be for children I will recommend it for a strong, mature 10-year-old reader or more. Book reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Was steel ever made here in Keynsham?

L

eading walks along the Chew Valley past Albert Mill often prompts this question. The hamlet of Steel Mills has a name that does not fit with this part of the country. But the answer in a nutshell is: “Yes, it was.“ Back in the 17th century iron working was certainly taking place further up the Chew near Pensford and Chew Magna. Around this time methods of making steel, by adding small quantities of carbon to iron, were being developed in various parts of England. Bars of good quality wrought iron, packed with charcoal in large pots or chests, were kept heated in furnaces under a conical chimney. Carbon was absorbed into the iron to form “blister steel”, so called because blisters formed on the surface as gas bubbled out. The process was repeated many times to produce the best quality steel. There is evidence from a Swedish traveller that by the 1720s steel was being produced by such methods here in Keynsham (Sweden was at the forefront of iron production in this period). In 1753, another researcher, Reinhold Angerstein, described the steel works as having furnaces and one hammer for forging. Iron from Swedish, English, Russian and Spanish sources was being converted to blister steel for merchants in Bristol. The finished product was expensive at £26 to £27 per ton so would be used only for making high value items. It is probable that these included weapons, such as swords and best quality cutlery. There is very little information on the history of this fascinating

Steel Mills today, above; the site of the Abbey Mill or Colour Mill in the Memorial Park, below local industry – it appears to be almost unique in the West Country and we know nothing of the entrepreneur who started it. By the early years of the 19th century, this method of producing steel had become obsolete and the works were becoming uneconomic. An auction notice in the Bristol Mirror of October 29, 1814 indicates that the site then comprised two steel furnaces, a smith’s shop, warehouses, a charcoal house, a mill house, with a newly erected hammer mill and steam engine, two small tenements and dwelling houses adjoining. We know that a Christopher Stallard was the steelworker at this time. It is believed that by 1822 the works had ceased to function. Today, Steel Mills comprises an

interesting assortment of buildings, all now in residential use although some are obviously of industrial origin. It would be exciting to discover more documents to shed light on the history of the site and other structures that must have existed there!

Walk through the history of the Memorial Park

Following the success of last year’s series of summer Sunday walks, the society is running several similar events this year. The idea is to combine a short walk – not more than two miles – with the opportunity to learn something about the history of our area. While general walks are still included, some new themed walks have been prepared on the Memorial

Park and Discovering Keynsham’s Lost Pubs. The walks are open to everyone and there is no charge. The next will be on Sunday, May 19, when Keith Norton will lead a walk around the Memorial Park explaining the history of the park itself and the many features of interest within it. All the Keynsham walks start at the café in the Memorial Park at 2.30pm.

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

O

n Sunday, April 7, a group of 35 walkers made their way to The Bull public house at Hinton, where the landlord had kindly set aside some of his car park for us. Some made their own way there, but most took advantage of the transport that was kindly laid on by Keynsham Dial-a-Ride, for which we thank them. This was the starting point of the five-mile walk organised by Mike Stone and Derek Butler. Leaving the car park, we crossed the road to the public footpath opposite. From here we

crossed several footpaths before reaching Chapel Lane in the village. More fields were crossed, and we reached the outskirts of Dyrham village. Here we joined the Cotswold Way, passing grazing horses who took a keen interest in our progress. We passed Dyrham Park and headed across a steep valley to an escarpment with wonderful views to the west, although it was a little misty. Rounding the prominent hill fort, our journey’s end was a short walk back to The Bull for refreshments before returning to Keynsham. A very enjoyable walk was had by all.

Golfers hail coffee morning a success Stormy weather failed to dampen enthusiasm for a charity coffee morning hosted by local golfers – with three good causes benefiting from the money raised. Saltford Golf Club Ladies Section held the event in March and raised more than £2,800. The funds have been split between the Forever Friends RUH Appeal, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and Keynsham and District Mencap, with each receiving £956.31. t the time of writing this, in Lent, quite a lot of folk here in Saltford are re-reading and discussing eight very down-toearth and matter-of-fact sayings of Jesus, which he used to teach good attitudes to life. He said that people are lucky, or blessed by God, when they feel at the end of their tether; or when mourning; not full of self-confidence; long for what is wrong in this world to be put right; are kind-hearted; don’t do things out of mixed motives, but with integrity and honesty; avoid and discourage conflict; and find themselves ridiculed for being like this. Some of these are very surprising and we wonder how

We are lucky, or blessed, when we realise that we need God’s help; when we grieve over our mistakes or events in the world around us; are willing to listen to the opinions of others; feel angry when others suffer injustice

they can be thought of as being lucky or a blessing! But talking about them with others quickly shows us that each saying has a much deeper and wider meaning than is immediately obvious. Each of them can be rephrased in lots of different ways. For example: we are lucky, or blessed, when we realise that we need God’s help; when we grieve over our mistakes or events in the world around us; are willing to listen to the opinions of others; feel angry when others suffer injustice; aren’t judgemental of others; don’t do things out of self-interest; when we work and cooperate with others for their good as well as our own;

and are victimised because others don’t understand us. You can find Jesus’s list in Matthew Chapter 5, where they are given a rather posh name of The Beatitudes. Those who enjoy puns call them “beautiful attitudes”. Jesus makes clear that our actions arise from our own inner attitudes. But we all know that people who live out these ways of being make us feel lucky and blessed. So when we adopt them, and choose to act on them, we will make others happy and be a blessing to them… and the world will be a better place. Jesus called it The Kingdom of Heaven.

LETTERS All ages must act on climate change As an older person I am used to being blamed for everything from Brexit to high house prices, but I was surprised to read in last month’s piece by Transition Keynsham that to deal with climate change “older generations won’t like this threat to their freedoms”. I do not know why older people have been singled out. Many older people were in at the beginning of the environmental movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Furthermore, ours is not the generation where so many feel the need to go long-distance travelling or have stag or hen dos that involve a trip to Prague or Ibiza rather than a few drinks down the pub. I am pleased that young people are taking an interest in climate change but concerned that they seem to expect someone else to take action. In truth it is up to us all to take action as individuals regardless of age. Many of the changes may be unpalatable. Recent research has classed some common suggestions in order of magnitude in annual carbon savings. They are: have one child less (58 tonnes); go car free – including the school run! (2.4 tonnes); use green energy (1.47 tonnes); take one less longhaul flight (1 tonne); go vegan (0.8 tonnes); and recycle (0.2 tonnes). Nigel Long Keynsham

Reader Mike Trotman writes to us and says: “Despite all the housing development that's going on around Keynsham at the moment, nature is able to find a way to survive. This is a photo I took of a group of roe deer resting in the early morning sunshine.”

Manage Bath waste in Bath – not here

An article in the April issue prompted me to write and question the £1.9m to fund a feasibility study to move the waste transfer facility at Windsor Road to Keynsham. I am a great believer in dealing with waste where it is generated – the old gasworks adjacent to the current facility is in need of development, and would make an ideal location

to manage Bath waste. Perhaps the fact that Riverside luxury apartments now overlook the Windsor Road waste facility doesn’t fit in the new community, or maybe the existing waste site has a development value that needs to be materialised. Pixash Lane is very congested, the Bath Road A4 is now a traffic pinch point and will get worse as the new Hygge development grows and grows. The last thing Keynsham needs is an endless stream of waste containers

travelling to Keynsham at all hours, polluting the air we breathe, day in day out. John Kiely Keynsham

Buccaneers make an impressive debut with win in first baseball league game Bristol Buccaneers secured an impressive 15-11 win over Cardiff Marlins in their South West Baseball League (SWBL) debut on Sunday, April 14, writes our correspondent. Bristol Baseball Club’s new team, which mainly consists of players in their first year of baseball, put on an impressive batting performance, registering 24 hits in the nine innings game. Debutant and MVP Ben Briggs, third baseman Neptali Ortega, outfielders Michael Hannah and Billy Garrett and second baseman Richard Evans all had strong offensive displays scoring 13 runs between them. Briggs and Garrett also put in strong pitching performances – Briggs struck out 13 Cardiff batters in his six innings. The Buccaneers also ran the basepaths well, stealing nine bases during a chilly afternoon

is a fantastic achievement and is down to the hard work and commitment every member of the team has put in since training began at the beginning of the year. “We also owe a lot to the club’s coaches who have worked really hard to get the team ready for the season.” At home at Somerdale Pavilion, the Bristol Bats overcame the Weston Jets 23-3 to get off to a winning start to their 2019 SWBL campaign. MVP and first baseman Paul Carter led the team offensively, hitting the first home run of the season while almost all the team contributed with the bat, driving in runs during the seven-inning game. Nerius Tamosiunas pitched an excellent three innings, striking out six Weston players. There was a welcome return for Ricky Gellatly, who also pitched three strong innings after a twoyear break from the game. The Bats were also aggressive with their running game recording 12 stolen bases. “It was a very strong all-round performance and we played well from the first pitch,” said Bats player manager Keith Weinberg. “It was a good team effort which sets us up for the rest of the season.” In the British Baseball Federation (BBF) AA double-

header, the Bristol Badgers went down 1-10 and 8-9 against the visiting Bournemouth Bears. The Badgers were up against high-quality pitching and despite early season rust with the bat, the defence held up well. The second game was much closer as the Badgers mounted a comeback in the sixth inning after going behind before the Bears grabbed a game-winning run in the eight inning to squeeze out the victory. The Badgers’ MVP was Rhod Theaker, who pitched four strong innings in the second game as well as driving in crucial runs. He also had his customary strong game as catcher in the first. “Obviously we don’t enjoy losing but the Bears pitched extremely well and we know that we will only get stronger as the season goes on,” said Badgers player manager Tom Hollies. “As a team we know what we need to work on and individual players have already committed to getting it right.” Opening day signalled another first as Molly Willcox (Buccaneers) and Tsz Yan Chan (Bats) became the first women to start league games for the club. All Bristol Baseball Club’s teams took a break for Easter before they take to the diamonds again on Sunday, April 28. Visit www.bristolbaseball. co.uk for more information.

Season ends with Ks’ rugby league position secure The first match of this report saw Keynsham move into safety in South West 1 (North), writes our correspondent. Thornbury were the visitors and were soundly beaten by the home side 37-10. The result was never in doubt as the Black and Ambers started quickly and soon had total dominance, a similar story to the first meeting of the sides earlier in the season. The four-try bonus was in the bag before half-time and the local boys never lost their lead, or their heads. League safety secure, the lads travelled to Lydney the following week and a dreadful game ensued. Whether they had their minds on the forthcoming semi-final of the Bath Combination Cup or just felt they’d done the necessary business, they failed to perform as a cohesive unit. Nineteen-nil down at the halfway stage and things did not improve. Had Lydney been more clinical the final score could have been embarrassing. It got to 31-0 when the Ks scored a consolation try from Phil Harvey, converted by Sam Challenger. Next Midsomer Norton came to the Crown Fields for the mid-week semi-final, aforementioned. A large crowd evenly split between the clubs was entertained by an enthralling game. Norton started strongly and continued that pressure throughout the game; however, Keynsham scored first when slick handling gave centre George Warren the chance to cross the line, Challenger’s conversion just wide. The visitors bounced straight back with a converted try. Keynsham thought they had gone ahead again through Paul Cooper, but the officials decided that he’d knocked on (correct decision!). A Challenger penalty put the home side ahead but the visitors put together three driving mauls making fully 70 metres before they conceded a penalty and while still on the offensive debutant Keynsham winger Joe Concannon intercepted a looped pass and sped 80 metres to score under the posts. Challenger’s

conversion made it a lucky 15-7 scoreline at the break. An early Norton penalty in the second half narrowed the gap and a searing 50-metre run by the visitors’ full back gave them the opportunity of another penalty to bring the gap to just two points. With the visitors pressing again, yet another intercept try for Keynsham; this time it was skipper and scrum half John Pearse who scattered the defence in a 60-metre sprint to the line. Yet again the visitors roared back and touched down in the corner and a superb conversion brought the scores level. A further Norton score edged them deservedly in front but at the last play Adam Harrison touched down for the home side. Challenger’s conversion attempt was not quite on the mark to win the game for Keynsham; 25-25 final score, with Midsomer Norton through to the final as the away team. A very fair result as they were the better side on the day. The last game of the season, versus third-placed Newent, loomed. This match coincided with the ex-players’ reunion and the reunion for the 1994 tour of Texas, which more than 80 “old boys” attended. The Black and Ambers rose to the occasion and, driven by a pack of forwards that smashed their opposition from the first confrontation, put together a comprehensive performance. Rueben Edwards, Hayden Johnson and a penalty try gave the home side a 21-12 half-time lead; a Joe Davies try following another forward-moving scrum completed the scoring in the second half for a satisfactory 2812 win. All off to the bar, season done! The Under-16s beat Old Bristolians in the plate final and play again in the Somerset final at the end of April. They will be joined there by the under-14s, who play earlier in the day (at Weston Hornets’ ground). Enjoy the summer, I’m playing bowls and watching Keynsham Cricket Club.

Runners smashing parkrun course records With the spring weather and better conditions under foot, Somerdale Pavilion parkrun has seen its course records tumble in recent weeks, writes our correspondent. Visiting runner Ed Knudsen recorded a male course record of 16m48s (Ed is the first person to run Somerdale Pavilion in under 17 minutes). Local runner

Clare Jolliffe broke the female course record with a strong run of 20m15s. Somerdale Pavilion parkrun is a free timed 5km run every Saturday at 9am in the fields below the pavilion. We all run for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace! Visit www.parkrun.org.uk/ somerdalepavilion

n SPORT Players pay respects to a club gentleman Keynsham Bowling Club’s final social event of the closed season took place when 40 members gathered for a beetle drive and ploughman’s supper, writes our correspondent. An enjoyable and somewhat noisy evening was had by all. Members were shocked at the death of one of our long-standing and most accomplished bowlers, Don Rees, after a short illness. Don had only recently taken on the role of club president and he will be greatly missed. He always had the time of day to encourage those who were just starting out on their bowling career and I well remember the help and advice that he gave me. One of the club’s gentlemen! More than 60 members were at his cremation to show their respect. The final testing of the new sprinkler system took place and our picture shows one of the jets showing the effectiveness of the installation. Grateful thanks are due to those members who worked hard on this project during the winter. About 20 members have just returned from the annual pre-season bowling trip to Cyprus. The club offers free coaching to anyone who would like to try their hand at the game. This takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11am from May 13, with all equipment provided. You will be made most welcome!
