Traders hopeful for future as customers flock to shops after lockdown: See Page 3 HAPPY birthday to us! This edition celebrates the ninth anniversary of Keynsham Voice. We’ve been covering news and events from Keynsham, Saltford and surrounding areas since we first went to print in 2012. Those nine years have seen lots of ups and downs, but little could have prepared us for the devastating effect of the pandemic. It’s been a time of grief and hardship. But it’s also seen many people rise to the challenge of supporting others and finding new ways of leading active lives – as reflected in our pages. So we’d like to thank all the readers, contributors, advertisers and distributors who have helped to make us a fixture of community life. Without you, there would be no Voice! Turn to Page 3

Vodafone and O2 want to upgrade the phone mast at Broadlands A PHONE mast at Broadlands Academy could be upgraded to 5G to meet future demands for two networks. Vodafone and O2, which are pooling their resources as Cornerstone, said the school in St Francis Road was the most suitable site option to improve the service in Keynsham. Broadlands Bears Nursery is also within 200 metres of the site, which already has a mast standing 17.9 metres high that would be replaced by a 20-metre mast with six antennae, a microwave dish and other equipment. Recent upgrade proposals locally have sparked scores of objections from residents concerned about the “unknown health risks” of 5G. Cornerstone has sought to reassure the public and said in its application: “We recognise that the growth in mobile communication has led, in some cases, to public concern

about perceived health effects of mobile technology, in particular about siting masts close to local communities. “Quite naturally, the public seeks reassurance that masts are not in any way harmful or dangerous. “Cornerstone ensure that our radio base stations are designed and built so that the public are not exposed to radio frequency fields above the guidelines set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. “In fact, radio base stations operate at low power and emit levels of radio-frequency fields many times lower than the ICNIRP general public guidelines.” It said 5G will offer “immense opportunities, given the faster and more reliable connectivity that it will provide”. Bath and North East Somerset Council will decide the fate of the application.

Further details of the complaints process can be found on the Voice website, or can be obtained by contacting the Publisher. DHP, HPD, MNCH(REG), AfSFH

Traders' relief as customers flock back BUSINESS has been booming in Keynsham since many shops were allowed to open their doors once again. After months of coronavirusrelated closures, non-essential retailers were able to welcome back their customers on April 12. One of the shops that has been enjoying a busy trade is Scrumptious Sweets in the High Street. Pam Garrie, who works in the family-run business with her daughter, said: “It has been lovely to see both old and new customers, along with our regulars who call in to buy their favourite sweets. “We are very fortunate that our customer base spreads across such a wide age range from a toddler wanting a Peppa Pig lolly, a teenager looking for all the new American sweets, and the senior citizen looking for his mint imperials and barley sugar. “Also, just this last week we have been putting together party bags, filling jars with sweets for a wedding and taking an order for a baby shower, so all very positive signs of things getting back to normal. “All our customers are absolutely lovely and very supportive. Many enquire as to how things are going.” Face masks are worn and only a limited number of customers are allowed in at a time. “People use our hand sanitiser upon entry and exit, and this is something I have noticed they have always done automatically.” Pam says the business remains positive about the future and is about to launch a website that will allow customers throughout the UK to order its products online. Business has also been good for Lauren and Hannah Saunders, of Beauty at Serendipity in Temple Street. Lauren said: “We have been really busy since opening back up. We have welcomed lots of our loyal customers back and new ones.” “Waxing is always highest on the list. However, pedicures, facials and massage have all been extremely popular since opening too. “Our customers have been extremely supportive. We have

had such lovely messages about reopening again. The most common is they are so glad some normality has returned, and they can have a pamper again.” As part of Covid-19 safeguards, the salon’s front door is kept closed to limit the number of clients, and entry is by appointment only. Lauren said: “Each room is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each client. We wear PPE, and our clients are asked to wear masks. We have maintained our normal high level of cleanliness while still making it relaxing and inviting.” The salon is now feeling optimistic about the future. Lauren said: “We are extremely grateful to still have a wonderful business. We are confident we can build our small business back up again.” The Bello Capelli hair salon in Temple Street has been “really busy” since April 12. Shoppers have been packing the High Street since non-essential Owner Lisa Hearse said: retailers reopened their doors “Colours and cuts are what people want done ASAP.” Covid safety measures – including disposable gowns, glass dividers between basins, and staff having their temperature taken on arrival – keep everyone safe but come at a financial cost. Lisa said: “I’m a bit cautious about the future, as I know once the rush of all our clients coming in now is over, the salon could become quiet. But I really hope we can maintain a steady flow so the business can survive.” Gemma Witcombe, owner of the Hair and Beauty Boutique in High Street, has also found her salon’s services in great demand. “We’ve found it really busy. Everyone is desperate for their hair!” She said customers have said they’ve been impressed by the Covid safety measures that have been put in place - which include PPE and lateral flow tests twice a week - even though they mean that the salon can only operate at half capacity. About the future, Gemma admitted: “It’s going to be a struggle.” But with her great team back together and customers so happy to return, she is confident that the business will recover. l High Street upheaval: Page 19

Memorabilia auction for Star Wars fans IN a business park not so far away, Star Wars fans have been given the chance to get their hands on more than £80,000 worth of memorabilia. More than 700 items that belonged to Bristolian actor David Prowse, who died in November, were being auctioned off at East Bristol Auctions in Hanham Business Park. The souvenirs of the Darth Vader actor were due to be sold on May 4 – often called Star Wars Day because it sounds similar to catchphrase, “May the force be with you.” Among the high-ticket items was the original script from The Empire Strikes Back, released in 1980, where Vader reveals he is Luke Skywalker’s father. Among the hundreds of autographs being auctioned off was a signed photo from Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill that says: “For David – you’ll always be ‘Dad’ Vader to me – your loving son Mark.” Memorabilia from David Prowse’s other iconic character were also up for sale. The costume he wore as the Green Cross Code man in children’s road safety adverts in the 1970s and 80s was expected to fetch over £5,000 at auction. Part of the proceeds of the auction will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK because Mr Prowse had Alzheimer’s when he died.

Biogas scheme 'threat to community' MORE opposition has been voiced against plans to build a food waste processing plant on green-belt land near Keynsham. The town council opposes the scheme and more than 600 comments in objection have been lodged with Bath and North East Somerset Council, which will decide on the planning application. Now two B&NES councillors have spoken out, saying the anaerobic digester plant would severely harm the local community. Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Ltd (REAL) wants to build the facility at the former Queen Charlton Quarry in Charlton Field Lane. It would treat organic materials or ‘feedstocks’ (crops and food waste) to produce biogas to create renewable energy. Two members of the B&NES Conservative Group – Alan Hale, ward member for Keynsham South, and Paul May, ward

Alan Hale, left, and Paul May at the proposed biogas site member for Publow and Whitchurch, have objected, citing the detrimental effects they say the plant would have on the local community. Their objections centre on an increase in HGV traffic, noise and smell pollution, and the fact that the application threatens the green belt. Councillor Alan Hale said: “While we welcome the drive towards producing renewable energy, we do not believe it

should come at the detriment of the local community in Keynsham and in nearby wards. “If the anaerobic digestor is built, HGV traffic going to and from the plant would have to come along Woollard Lane and into Charlton Road. “Anyone who is familiar with Woollard Lane will know that it’s in no way suitable for a constant flow of HGVs, especially if they are meeting each other at narrow sections of the road.

“In so doing, they could seriously damage the quality of life, and physical and mental health, of people who live nearby. Road safety would also become a major issue, with increased levels of HGV traffic in an area where people regularly walk and ride horses.” Councillor Paul May said: “This green-belt development will mean that residents who live nearby will be directly affected by noise and smell pollution, and an increase in HGV traffic. “Hundreds of new homes have been built less than a mile from the proposed development site, and it’s deeply unfair that the occupants should have to live with this plant on their doorsteps. “There are more appropriate locations for a development of this nature, ones that will not impact the green belt and local communities in the same way.” The application will be brought before B&NES’ planning committee in due course.

Community fridge set for return

KEYNSHAM Community Fridge - which operated sporadically during the periods of lockdown - is relaunching from Tuesday June 1. The fridge - based at Temple Street Canteen, 20 Temple Street - is a great way for the community to help to reduce waste or surplus food. Around 10 million tonnes of food are wasted in the UK every year. Food waste is also one of the biggest contributors to global warming because of the greenhouse gases produced when it is disposed of. In Keynsham, campaigners have been fighting back by making surplus food donated by local businesses available free to anyone who wants it. Before it reopens on June 1, volunteers will be taking the fridge out and about through a series of pop-up events to show what the fridge has to offer. These will take place from 9am-12pm outside Keynsham Baptist Church on May 8 and 15; Queens Road shopping area on May 11 and 18, Somerdale Road on May 13; and the playing field in The Meadows on May 20. For more information, visit the Keynsham Community Fridge page on Facebook.

Welcome to hedgehog street!

Dave Sage (chair of Keynsham Group Avon Wildlife Trust), Helen Stone, resident of St Francis Road, with the hedgehog flier, and Kathy Farrell (Keynsham group vice-chair) with a hedgehog home donated to Charlie for his artistic help Main photo by Martin Farrell (Hedgehog photo: Amy Lewis) RESIDENTS of a Keynsham street will be helping to create a wildlife hotspot this summer. With support from Keynsham Group Avon Wildlife Trust, neighbours in St Francis Road - led by Helen Stone and Dave Sage - are setting up a ‘hedgehog street’ to encourage the animals to use their gardens. Fliers have been distributed asking residents to participate in Hedgehog Awareness Week in May, with the aim of linking gardens and reducing pesticide use. Hedgehogs have been badly affected by loss of habitat and have come to rely on urban gardens to provide them with food, such as slugs. As they can roam over a mile each night in search of food, making hedgehog ‘walkways’ between gardens is essential, as is reducing the use of pesticides, which are potentially dangerous for them. It is hoped the campaign will improve conditions

for the hedgehogs and lead to an increase in population. Charlie, a young resident of St Francis Road, created a drawing of a hedgehog for use on the fliers for residents. In addition to the hedgehog project, St Francis Road has received swift nesting boxes erected by the Keynsham group - three boxes each containing four nest compartments, added to the other 10 boxes installed in and around Keynsham and Saltford. In the future some of these may be occupied by swifts returning from Africa to breed. All the boxes have been constructed and installed by Martin Farrell of the Keynsham group. If other streets in Keynsham would like to follow the example of St Francis Road residents in setting up a hedgehog walkway, Keynsham group is happy to advise and can be emailed at keynshamawt@ gmail.com. l Back to Nature: Pages 28 & 29

7 Saltford School pupil David playing along with his guitar teacher Nick Pallett on air at KTCRfm

David's live treat for listeners A TALENTED young musician has teamed up with his guitar teacher to appear on local radio. David S, aged 9, was interviewed and played live on air on the KTCRfm station. The Saltford Primary School pupil, who is in Year 4, talked about learning guitar during lockdown during his appearance on the KTCR Hour show. He also played several Beatles songs, accompanied by his teacher Nick Pallett, who has recorded links and jingles with the radio station.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

David has been learning guitar with Mr Pallett for about three years and will soon take his Grade 2 classical guitar exam, having previously passed Initial Grade and Grade 1 with distinction. Music runs in David’s family. His dad George used to be a drummer with Cardiffbased indie pop band The Loves. When he played with them in the early 2000s, they toured the UK and recorded two John Peel sessions at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios. David’s mum Anna is a huge fan of

U2, The Police and Led Zeppelin, and his younger brother Frank loves dancing along to anything with a beat. George said: “During lockdown, when activities like tennis and swimming were suspended, we were all glad that David was able to continue practising guitar at home and taking some lessons with Mr Pallett via Zoom. “We play a lot of music at home, and David has become very keen on The Beatles, The Beach Boys, David Bowie and Queen.”

Quick-thinking workers foil car culprit

T

his month I’ll start with some good news. A car that entered the Bloor building site at the top of Charlton Road attracted the attention of workers there, due to the way it was being driven. Next thing they know, a male dumped the car and started gardenhopping to distance himself from it. Thanks to their quick thinking, they managed to apprehend the male. Having only seen the vehicle for a matter of seconds, they were still able to give a good description of the driver, and although he tried to change his appearance, the investigation managed to gain enough continuity to prove he was the driver. The vehicle turned out to be stolen, with evidence of another burglary inside. The offender got a 12-week prison sentence for theft of the vehicle, and the burglary investigation is ongoing. We hope to extend his stay in prison once the forensic results are back. n We have had reports of stolen mopeds being ridden around the

with PC James Evans footpaths of the new estates at the top of Charlton Road. We are working with the council for a solution to access routes between the estates to hinder this sort of behaviour. However, if anyone sees a moped rider doing this, please gain as much information as you can - whether that is covertly recording the incident on a mobile phone or just jotting down the index and reporting it on either 101 or through the force website. Generally, if a moped has L plates and has two people on it, it’s likely to be an offence, as provisional riders are not allowed

to carry pillion passengers. We are looking at different ways to catch these offenders but could do with your eyes and ears to help us pinpoint locations. n There has been a massive rise in dog ownership since the lockdown was introduced, with people taking advantage of the ‘work from home’ guidance to train their newly acquired puppies. Keynsham is blessed with a number of beautiful local walks. And although 99% of people clean up after their dog properly, a significantly percentage then fail to deal with the waste correctly. There is no excuse for leaving your waste hanging from a tree, gate or fence, so take it with you and dispose of it properly. And if a bin is overflowing, please call the council to make them aware and then take your waste to the next bin. n Over in Saltford, we have received a number of complaints about graffiti under the metal cycle path bridge that crosses the

river at the Shallows. It appears that someone was under the misconception that this location was an agreed painting site. We have checked with the owners and this is not the case, so anyone found painting there is committing offences and could be liable for arrest. Please spread the word that this is not a suitable location, and if you see anyone committing this damage, please report it to us. n Also in Saltford, please be aware that parking restrictions remain in place along the Shallows and Mead Lane and are being enforced by the council. Some bright spark decided to throw a number of the traffic cones into the river. This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable. If anyone has any information as to the offender, I would love to speak to them. n As the Covid rules and guidance change, please keep an eye on them so we can all get past this situation and avoid another lockdown. The rules can be found on the government website.

Polling day for voters

Mark Stockley made these litter bins from recycled materials

THREE stylish and fun litter bins are helping to keep Chewton Keynsham tidy. They are the work of handyman Mark Stockley, who made them from recycled materials. He said: “I think it makes sense to make them from rubbish as that is what they are for.” The wood comes mainly from pallets, old decking, ceiling beams after redecoration and old fence posts. “They take a while, mainly because of sorting the pallets, taking them apart and sanding down - also the design and having to make them from the wood I have rather than having to purchase what would be best.” The two square litter bins he made took between eight and 10 hours each, while one in the shape of a tractor took him about 30 hours. Mark began his project when Lesley Bowes, of Chewton Farm, saw a square litter bin in Compton Dando and asked Mark if he could make one. Mark said: “We decided to keep a similar format to show continuity amongst the two villages. She paid me for half my time, supplied the bin and the plants for the top.” The bin that Lesley commissioned is by the village notice board, while the other square bin has been placed at Kingfisher Cottage, at the

bottom of the hill down from the Wellsway. The tractor bin is situated in front of buildings at Chewton Farm. Mark said: “I designed the tractor from scratch. I just knew where I wanted it to go and thought a ‘theme’ may attract more people to use it.” All the bins are well used and are helping to cut down on the litter that blights the area. “A great deal of rubbish in the village comes out of car windows as people drive through

- McDonald’s wrappers, KFC boxes, cider cans etc. I thought putting a bin where cars can pull in and making it a ‘novelty’ may make people use it.” When he is not making bins, Mark, a self-employed handyman, does jobs such as building and pointing stone walls, replacing fencing, fitting kitchens and bathrooms, painting and decorating. For his son’s wedding, he made drinks trolleys, tables, signposts, teepees and display crates - all from pallets – and a wedding arch from branches cut from trees in the garden. His bins are emptied by villagers who have contributed financially to them. “I am glad people have noticed the bins and are hopefully appreciative of what we are trying to do. “The more people know they are there, the more they may get used. The amount of rubbish dropped through the village is awful, and several villagers collect on a regular basis.”

VOTERS were due to go to the polls on Thursday May 6 to elect the next Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner and the next Metro Mayor. The PCC is responsible for the effective policing of the region, drawing up a budget – including the annual precept charged to council tax payers – setting priorities through a police and crime plan and holding the chief constable and officers to account for delivering it. The candidates are: Kerry Barker (Labour), Cleo Lake (Green), Heather Shearer (Liberal Democrat), Mark Shelford (Conservative) and John Smith (Independent). The Metro Mayor leads the West of England Combined Authority, which is in charge of coordinating the region’s transport, housing, jobs and skills region’s transport, housing, jobs and skills policy. The candidates are: Dan Norris (Labour), Jerome Thomas (Green), Samuel Williams (Conservative) and Stephen Williams (Liberal Democrat). We’ll be carrying the results on our website – visit https:// www.keynshamvoice.co.uk/

Church tea time

VISITORS to Compton Dando in need of refreshments will be pleased to hear that St Mary’s Church plans to start serving tea and cake again from July 4. The church looks forward to welcoming the many people who have come to enjoy walks around the village during the pandemic. More details will be released at a later date.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

When Co-op was king of the high street

T

oday the high street of Keynsham, like most others, is almost unrecognisable from that of the 1950s and 1960s, when shopping locally was the norm. One of the features of Keynsham that older residents will remember was the large number of shops run by the Co-op. Here, we look at how they started. By 1894, the idea of the co-operative retailer had become established, the first having been formed some 50 years earlier. On September 13 of that year, four local men, led by Mr Bill Harris, met with enthusiastic members of the Bedminster Co-operative (set up in 1882) at the Crown Inn and discussed the possibility of such a venture for Keynsham. As they accompanied the Bedminster men to the station, they met Messrs Williams and Tucker. While they waited for the train, it was decided there was no time like the present and each gave one shilling to Mr R Tucker, who promised to act as treasurer. This was the start of the Keynsham Cooperative Society. A week later about 40 people attended a public meeting in the old Free School and formally set up the society with a constitution, a committee and elected officers. Premises were soon taken and the store opened for business on November 23 in a room at saddler Louis Phelps’ premises on Cheapside (now the Civic Centre). It was very much an amateur concern, with the 40 Co-operators catering only for themselves and having a turnover of £133 in the first quarter, selling basic foodstuffs. They relied heavily on the efforts of a few. Secretary Joseph Harvey, a respected local newsagent, and his family did most of the management. Bill Harris, the president, was a dairyman who supplied milk at a discount to the society and also fetched goods for sale from Bristol to keep the costs down. But membership increased only slowly and it soon became clear that the society was really too small to prosper. Not far away were larger and more successful Co-ops: Bedminster, East Twerton and Radstock. Keynsham was struggling, so in 1896 the idea of amalgamation with Bedminster Co-operative was put forward. Bedminster declined the offer, but eight years later another approach met with success and in 1905 the two societies merged. A few years later the joint society was itself swallowed up by the new Bristol Co-operative Society and expansion began. By 1911 the members had taken over a shop at 10 High Street, opposite the church. The ‘divvie’ (dividend) was introduced and this appealed to many poorly paid people: it became a way of saving for Christmas and the like. By 1915 the shop’s popularity had increased and it moved to the east side of the High Street, next to the Forester’s Arms. In the 1930s this site was expanded (Nos 25 and 27) and remained the Co-op’s main grocery store in the town. Provisions were weighed out, with loose tea and sugar being poured into blue paper bags,

As part of a larger organisation, the Co-op provided serious competition for the established grocers, with a wider range of groceries and new ideas, such as self-service. It also offered home delivery, and an option to use prepaid tokens instead of cash. Before long the Keynsham operation had expanded beyond food and by 1930 the Co-op had established several shops in the High Street. At No 29 (now Timbercraft) they opened a shoe shop and on the opposite side next to the Victoria Methodist Church, they had double-fronted premises occupied variously by furniture, general homeware and menswear

Joseph Harvey was secretary of Keynsham Co-operative Society – he is pictured here many years later in 1938 sections. There was also a drapery store and a greengrocer’s. After reaching its prime in the 1950s, the Co-op gradually declined as ‘supermarkets’, where all purchases could be made under one roof, became established and car ownership increased. Only one Co-op property has survived into the 21st century: No 24 High Street, which started post-war as a modern food store and after a period as a Freezer Food Centre was converted to a funeral parlour in 1998. It remains as this – the last survivor of a chain that once had a major presence on the High Street. (Based on research by Sue Tatford for the Society Journal 2018) Richard Dyson

Summer showtime beckons for Emma TALENTED Emma Falconer has a summer of excitement ahead as she strives to achieve her dreams. The Keynsham performer has landed an opportunity with the British Youth Music Theatre, whose famous alumni include Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. The 17-year-old will spend two weeks rehearsing and performing in Brighton following her successful audition. She will be based there from July 26 to August 7, with performances at the end of the second week in Cabaret Macabre at the Old Market Theatre. Emma said: “Initially I was shocked because I couldn’t believe it. Then I was really excited because the show sounds right up my street and it will be an amazing opportunity. “The casting will take place when the cast all come together in July, but all the characters are famous women from history – just extra sassy, fabulous versions.” Emma’s audition took place over several hours on Zoom. “I had to send in self-tapes of a monologue and a song. It felt a bit strange at first, but you soon get used to it. “It was really good fun. We did lots of improv and exercises, and I somehow ended up doing an Essex accent and a Russian accent!” She was particular pleased to earn the chance to spend time with such a renowned company during the pandemic. “BYMT has an amazing reputation and is considered very prestigious – and to be honest,

Emma Falconer at a dance workshop in London with West End star Layton Williams Covid has made me appreciate any opportunity to perform.” Emma has performed in numerous shows with Phoenix Keynsham Youth Theatre and Bristol School of Performing Arts, as well as at Wellsway School, where she is studying for her A-levels. Among her favourite shows was Wellsway’s production of Grease, in which she played Frenchy – “it was so much fun.”

Her proud mum Cathy said: “She has been acting since she was really young but also absolutely loves to sing. She has also recently discovered a love for dance.” After her A-levels, she will go to the Performance Preparation Academy in Guildford, Surrey, for a one-year intensive course in musical theatre, beginning in September. She hopes to follow this with a three-year degree

course in pursuit of her dreams. “Just making a living in the performing arts industry is a pretty big ambition, but my absolute dream is to be a leading lady in the West End.” Emma now needs to raise £1,650 for her stint with the British Youth Music Theatre and is seeking sponsors. If anyone can help, they can contact Emma at emmafalconerbymt@outlook. com.

Success with school choices

How we can help to keep KEYNSHAM Memorial Park is the first park in Bath and North East Somerset to receive an innovative litter-picking station. The new unit, developed in partnership with the 2 Minute Foundation, provides equipment to help volunteers pick litter safely in their local park. The two-minute litter-picking station is based on a successful concept that has inspired twominute beach cleans across the South West. The Keynsham station, an initiative of the Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation, was launched on April 13. The project aims to improve parks post-lockdown and support local communities who want to see nature-rich and litter-free local green spaces. The unit is funded by Keynsham Town Council and is one of several that Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation plans to introduce to other parks in Bristol and B&NES. ALMOST every family in Bath and North East Somerset has been offered one of their overall preferences for primary school places in 2021/22. Figures show 99 per cent of applications received one of their overall preferences, with 93 per cent getting their first preference of primary school. The total number of applications received from Bath and North East Somerset residents was 1,706. Of them, 1,581 children got their first preference school, 89 pupils were offered their second preference and 15 pupils offered their third preference. Figures show 21 pupils were not offered a place at any of their preferences and were offered a place at their next nearest school with a place available. These are known as referrals. In 2020 the number of children offered their first place was 93.05 per cent. Councillor Kevin Guy, B&NES cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We are fortunate to have a range of effective primary schools across Bath and North East Somerset that meet young children’s needs. I wish the soon-to-be reception pupils the very best of luck at their new schools.”

The Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation has been working with voluntary litter-picking group Keynsham Wombles on the launch of the new station. Erica Davies, the group’s

founder, said: “Keynsham Wombles are so pleased to support the two-minute litter pick station in the park. “The best possible way to discourage littering is to make sure there is no litter already on show - so giving park goers

the ability to pick up litter as it happens will have a huge impact on reducing the amount of litter in our beautiful park.” Phoebe Dando, Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation litter station co-ordinator, said: “Keynsham Memorial Park is

a wonderful green space that’s really enjoyed by the local community. “The litter-pick station is located right next to the cafe and fun to use, and I look forward to seeing park goers sharing their experiences on social media.” Keynsham town councillor David Biddleston said: “We are very happy to support such a worthwhile project. It’s exciting that local people are willing to get involved and to help keep our community clean and tidy. It’s wonderful to see an initiative like this that really goes to show people in Keynsham are community-minded.” Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation has also launched a campaign to encourage people to pledge to care for their park this spring. The pledge can be found on the foundation’s website - www.yourpark.org.uk/parkpledge - and @YourParkBB Facebook page, highlighting the importance of parks during the pandemic.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Trevor James Pioneer Minister St John’s Keynsham

ere we are again, coming to the end of another lockdown. The spring is budding and there is a glimmer of hope that we can reunite with family and friends, go to the restaurants we love and will have some sort of holiday this summer. I do not know about you, but I can really do with all the hope I can get my hands on. I moved to Keynsham with my wife Holly and two children to take up the role of Pioneer Minister with the C of E in November 2019. All seemed to be going well until five months in, where we were locked down as a nation due to Covid-19. This was quite difficult, considering my role is centred around people, creating fresh expressions of faith and new ways of doing this thing called church. During this first lockdown, I acquired a small plot adjacent to the river Chew.

I need to add that I had also received some bad news at this point, the sort of news that makes you want to throw in the towel. Anyway, back to the point; it was 5ft high with weeds and needed a lot of work. I found clearing and developing this space very therapeutic due to the beauty of my surroundings. But there was something else, something I had never experienced - I was experiencing God afresh in the midst of this pain and restriction. God was gently revealing something. I was realising fast, ‘we may be in a lockdown, but God was not’! He was planting firmly in my heart a new hope, a new ministry and a new way of being in relationship with him. This season felt like I was in God’s playground, that I was a child in his presence with full permission to play. The heaviness began to lift. I began to experience an

assurance for the future. I quickly realised my heart was mending due to being in this little square garden by the river. It was my sanctuary. This was the birth of the Sanctuary Garden; it still has a long way to go but it is now a space that I can share with the community. We have started using the space for morning contemplative prayer/silence and for a new stone-painting group called Hope Rocks. But there will be much more to come. I believe this space will be a sanctuary for many, a place of hope, healing, community, wellbeing and support, and maybe the place where you will experience the hope of Jesus and the love of God for the first time or in a fresh way. n For more information about the Hope Rocks stone-painting group at the Sanctuary Garden, see story on Page 22

n NEWS KEYNSHAM athlete Kate Strong is poised to attempt three cycling world records this month. She aims to record the farthest distance travelled on a static bike in periods of one, 12 and 24 hours. The vegan athlete, 42, will begin her challenge at a Bristol venue at 3pm on May 26 and conclude at the same time on May 27. Currently, no record exists for a female cycling on a static bicycle for 24 hours. The records she needs to break are 348km in 12 hours and 35.3km in one hour – both achieved by Slovenian athlete Tina Ternjak in 2012. Kate beat the one-hour time in a witnessed attempt outside her Keynsham home in January, but she is still waiting for Guinness to officially confirm this as a record. She only started training for athletic success in her early 30s. Within two years she was crowned world champion for her age group in long-distance triathlon in 2014, and since that time has been an avid participant in extreme sport. Kate is also planning to undertake the Limitless Challenge between June 2022 and May 2023. The never-beforeattempted feat would see her cycle 3,000 miles across the US, swim the English Channel and climb Everest - all within 12 months. The first part of her challenge is Race Across America (RAAM), one of the longest running ultraendurance events in the world. Kate aims to cycle 3,000 miles across 12 states, from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast, crossing the Rockies, the heartland of America and finally the

involves climbing the world’s highest peak, standing at 8,848 meters in altitude. Of the 7,000 people who have climbed Everest, only 18% have been female. Kate will be based in Kathmandu for about five months before attempting the

summit to optimise training and acclimatisation. She said: “I want to demonstrate what women can do if they put their minds to it. “My background isn’t unique. Until my thirties, I was working as an engineer and hadn’t partaken in any sport competitively since my teens. “It was only through a cliff-edge moment, which left me financially in debt and emotionally distraught, that I accepted my life needed to change. “Through these challenges, I want to set records that never existed before, in a field where female participation is stark in comparison to male. “Every sporting performance I undertake, I do so with the intention of inspiring other women to realise their full potential and reach their goals.” Kate attributes her success in part to a plant-based diet. She went vegan in 2012 after realising that her lung capacity was holding her back. As an asthmatic, Kate had often struggled with shortness of breath but after removing dairy from her diet she found that within weeks she was no longer wheezy and was able to run much faster. In addition, it also cleared up her eczema and improved her sleeping pattern. The world record attempts and Limitless Challenge are about more than Kate’s own physical performance. She is also working with a team of researchers to better understand human performance and how we can improve and elevate our mental and physical abilities in varying conditions. Summit is our last chance to act

I

n November, the UK hosts COP26, a summit of the 197 countries that are part of the UN’s climate treaty. Governments and negotiators will discuss how to prevent the climate crisis from causing even worse catastrophes than we’re already seeing across the world. Scientists and politicians warn that very soon it may be too late to stop runaway climate change – so COP26 is our last chance to limit global temperature rises to below dangerous levels. At the Paris Agreement in 2015, countries agreed that this level would be set at 1.5C, and that more ambitious goals would be needed to get there. COP26 is where those goals will be laid out. Joe Biden has already made his position clear. His first presidential act was to rejoin the Paris Agreement, and in April he announced that the US would cut carbon emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by the year 2030. The UK – which holds the COP

US President Joe Biden has made a pledge on cutting carbon emissions presidency – has committed to cutting carbon emissions by 78% compared to 1990 levels by 2035. It’s one of the world’s boldest targets, but it lacks a roadmap to achieve it. Experts say that to get there, we’ll all have to use less energy, and what we do use must be from renewable sources. We will have to eat less meat and shift towards a plant-based diet. We’ll need to walk and cycle more and fly less; repair and reuse more and buy less; invest in low- or no-carbon technologies, goods and services. We’ll have to manage our landscape for nature, to

stem the tide of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation so we can continue to benefit from the vital goods and services nature provides (e.g. food, timber, clean water and carbon storage). On September 17, The Space in Keynsham will host a panel of experts in food and farming, renewable energy, sustainable finance and protecting nature. They’ll discuss how individuals, institutions and the government can help the UK achieve those targets, and answer questions from the audience. (Tickets available soon). I hope to see you there. SALTFORD Community Cinema is hoping to go ahead with its first screening for 2021 this month. The Personal History of David Copperfield will be shown at Saltford Hall on Friday May 21, assuming that step 3 of the government’s roadmap out of Covid-19 lockdown is achieved by May 17. The film, starring Dev Patel and Hugh Laurie, starts at 7.30pm, with the bar and ice creams available at customers’ tables via contactless payment from 6.45pm. Tickets at £5 each must be bought in advance via www.tickettailor.com/events/ scaevents. No tickets will be available at the door. Military Wives is planned for June 18 and Green Book on July 16.

Mid Life Guide to Financial Freedom Do some or all of the following statements apply to you? Are you: • A business owner or senior professional? • Stretched by having to support elderly parents and your children? • Looking forward to a future where your work aligns more with your values and preferred lifestyle? If you’re over 40, and don’t want to work full-time until state retirement age, this article is for you. Whether you want to retire early or reduce your hours to achieve a balanced working lifestyle, planning (starting now) is the key to achieving this.

Health and Wealth Retirement is made fulfilling when enjoyed alongside good health. Remaining healthy in later life is not a given, and COVID has leant a stark perspective on this. A personal health plan alongside a retirement plan can make long-held dreams of a life after work a reality. Wealth Planning You may have spent much of your working life making money. But as you get older it becomes more important to protect what you have. A combination of Wills, Powers of Attorney and inheritance tax planning can protect your wealth, to pass-on efficiently, and to whom you choose, even if you die first and your partner re-marries.

Retirement Planning This should be your number one priority. In the same way you have a business plan, you also need a personal strategic plan. With guidance from a financial planning expert, it may entirely be realistic to bring forward your retirement or semi-retirement date by several years. But as each year passes, the retirement planning window narrows, so it’s important to act now.

More upheaval looms in the High Street SHOPPERS and traders in Keynsham High Street face more disruption with the introduction of new restrictions from May 10. The High Street has been closed to traffic during the day to support social distancing since last summer. Now, as well as traffic being banned, the pavement on one side is being closed, along with the cycle lane. The measures are being brought in by Bath and North East Somerset Council to enable enhancement of the High Street. The council states: “The first phase of public improvements to the public space between Bath Hill and Charlton Road will rejuvenate the town centre and attract locals and visitors back to the High Street. “The enhancements will include footpath widening and resurfacing, better signage, cycling and bus stop facilities, and new street furniture, streetlights, landscaping and trees.” The new traffic order published by B&NES reveals that it plans “to temporarily introduce a road closure to vehicles in that length of High Street, Keynsham, from its junction with Charlton Road to its junction with Bath Hill, including the contraflow cycle lane.” It said it would also temporarily introduce a footpath closure the length of High Street and Temple Street on the west side from the

The council says the order will allow “public realm works” to be carried out from May 10 for a maximum of eight months. The road will only be restricted when traffic signs are in position and this may not last the whole period. It is anticipated the work will be finish by November 30. Some people have criticised the timing of the work. Pam Garrie, of Scrumptious Sweets in the High Street, told the Voice: “This will cause

more disruptions to the High Street and put people off stopping and shopping, just when we are trying to get back on our feet.” She fears all businesses in the area will be affected and that customers will instead go to Bath, Bristol, or bigger stores elsewhere. And one commenter on Facebook said: “This will help the shops on the High Street no end! Secure parking for cyclists KEYNSHAM Methodist Church already has two Eco Congregation Awards and has signed up for the current Eco Church scheme. We were therefore delighted to hear about Life Cycle UK, a charity that works in local communities to encourage and enable cycling, by providing free secure cycle stands. On-site car parking can be difficult to provide but it is so much easier to provide on-site cycle parking. Installing cycle parking is a great way to enable those who use our premises to unlock the

health and environmental benefits of cycling. As a result of funding provided by Bath and North East Somerset Council, we now have two stands in place at both of our premises in Charlton Road and Queens Road, each one capable of having two cycles securely attached to it. We look forward to those who enter our premises making good use of these stands, thus reducing our carbon footprint. More cycling means fewer cars on the road and less air pollution.

o become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks.” This oath of medieval lineage was used by the Duke of Edinburgh at the Queen’s coronation on June 2, 1953, and has become one of the two defining quotations of the modern monarchy – and the reason that the institution has been so successful during the second Elizabethan Age. Prince Philip’s oath provides the answer to the question of how the monarchy continues to flourish once all political power is ceded. It is about service to an institution embodied in an individual who represents the nation. The many obituaries have enumerated the volume of work that the Duke carried out over his lifetime. The tens of thousands of engagements, the thousands of speeches and, although no one has yet estimated the number of hands he shook, it must be over one million. As that liege man, he sublimated himself wholly to the interests of the nation. The Duke’s tireless example showed how monarchy can still be important and useful. To do this, not only did he have to be endlessly dutiful, but also memorable.

Royalty are blessed and cursed by the fact that everyone they meet will remember every word that is spoken. The Duke’s ability to be pithy may have amused the media from time to time, but it ensured that all whom he met had a story to tell afterwards. The Duke’s steadfast dedication, demonstrated not only devotedly but with good humour, was a linchpin to our monarchy and so to our constitution and the health of our nation. The oaths made by Her Majesty and Prince Philip before God link the sovereign to our collective history, allowing and encouraging her personification of the nation. People are honoured to meet or be thanked by the Queen or her immediate family because of this symbolism. A plaque being unveiled by her consort is special because of the religious element of the coronation, the divine blessing if not right that the sovereign enjoys. Perhaps the greatest tribute to the Duke is that he made it look easy. That is the proof of how well it has been done and a reminder of the debt we owe for a long life as the country’s first vassal, Her Majesty’s liege man. n KEYNSHAM WOMBLES

We're ready to join the British Spring Clean Keynsham Wombles are hoping for a good response for the national event, thanks to a rise in new recruits

KEYNSHAM Wombles will be doing their bit for Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean next month. They will hold a Big Womble on June 6, from 10am to 12pm, in conjunction with the national event. The Wombles are asking people in their bubbles, socially distanced groups of six, or as individuals, to pick litter somewhere they feel really needs it. Anyone living or ending up near Womble founder Erica Davies’ home at 54 Albert Road can come along for a hot or cold drink and cake on her drive. The Wombles did this last year in a successfully socially distanced way. Anyone wanting further information or equipment can contact Erica at womble@transitionkeynsham.org. The group is hoping for a good response, as the number of Wombles has increased significantly during the past year. The Wombles also have many young people picking litter as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme.

n BACK TO NATURE

Secret World of the wildlife saviours with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group A VIRTUAL audience of over 50 screens enjoyed another excellent Zoom presentation to Keynsham Group Avon Wildlife Trust, about the work of Secret World Wildlife Rescue (SWWR), writes chairman Dave Sage. The speaker was Jamie Kingscott, former student of Wellsway School and an Environmental Studies graduate. He has been working at SWWR for over three years, so he had plenty of humorous anecdotes to support his expert explanations of their work. Based near Highbridge in Somerset, an hour’s drive from Keynsham, SWWR were founded in 1992 by award-winning conservationist Pauline Kidner, still tirelessly directing operations and described by Jamie as “a force of nature” They annually rescue over 5,000 animals - injured, sick or wildlife orphans such as otters, badgers, foxes and birds of prey - which they hand-rear, care for, and rehabilitate. This process can take up to 18 months depending upon the species. Their motto is “RescueRehabilitate-Release” and they rely entirely on the generosity of supporters. Hence, they always welcome donations to help save British wildlife. Jamie’s talk focused mainly on the release work he is engaged in. Clearly, to be successful, this involves a great deal more than just releasing a recovered animal from its cage and leaving it to fend for itself. The process involves five key stages: Sourcing (release sites), Surveying, Set up, Moving, Monitoring. Arguably the most challenging stage is the first, finding a suitable release site for each animal. SWWR rely on social media appeals, previous contacts and sympathetic landowners to help find sites. This is not always easy; foxes and badgers are very unpopular among many farmers, often persecuted and the latter controversially subject to culls in the South West to try to reduce

Our next online talk is St Kilda & the Hebrides - sailing to the edge of the world with Sara Frost, on Friday May 21. Zoologist Sara will take us cruising through the Inner and Outer Hebrides to the UNESCO World Heritage site of St Kilda, introducing us to the local wildlife and also giving insight into the lives of the hardy St Kildan people who used to live there. To join the talk, visit keynshamawt. org/whats-on, email keynshamawt@gmail.com or contact Kathy on 07850 508702. the incidence of bovine TB. On the other hand, most people welcome hedgehogs! Once a potential site has been found, it needs to be carefully surveyed for suitability, including water supply, busy roads nearby, predators, competitors and presence of territorial animals like badgers, which would not

tolerate a newcomer nearby. Field visits are essential, including meetings with landowners and other parties. Setting camera traps to check on other wildlife is often successfully used. Releases can be “hard” or “soft”. Hard releases are only used where an animal is being returned to its former habitat soon after being

brought in for treatment, e.g. a fox cub being returned to its mother (a natal return). Soft releases involve building a temporary enclosure in which the animal can adjust and be fed and monitored to ensure it is fit for release. They are kept here for one to two weeks, depending on species. Most are released in late summer / early autumn, although otters are released in the spring. Post-release monitoring is important to gauge the success of the release. If 40% of released animals survive, this is considered successful and worth the time and effort invested, as it mirrors, even exceeds natural survival rate. All animals are micro-chipped, which works well if animals don’t disperse far from the release site. Camera traps might be used in the early stages to monitor movements. Animals are not currently fitted with radio collars, the cost being prohibitive. However Jamie feels they could be used in the future. Our huge thanks go to Jamie for a very entertaining, informative and inspiring evening. If you are interested in donating to Secret World or know of a potential release site, head to their website - www.secretworld.org

Dawn chorus Our first field outing of the season was a week later, my annual dawn chorus from Saltford Shallows. Ten of us (in two bubbles of five) met at 4.30 am to ensure we were there before the birds started singing. We made it with 20 minutes to spare; the robin being the first to wake and sing, as usual, closely followed by blackbird, the superb song thrush, and the tiny wren, with its disproportionately loud trill! Once dawn broke, it was a glorious morning, cold but bright and clear, with lots to see and hear. We recorded 34 species, a very good total considering some migrants had not yet returned to this area, so there were no sightings of swallow, house martin, swift or willow warbler. The highlight came right at the end; a mistle thrush not five metres from us pulling out and devouring a large earthworm, doing what the early bird does best! Special thanks to Philippa Paget for expertly leading the second bubble.

n BACK TO NATURE

Don't mow, let it grow this month

MAY is a great time to be working in the garden and thinking about how to help wildlife in the process. There are so many nectar-producing plants that invertebrates such as bees and butterflies need for food, and information is abundant online to help choose these plants. However this is the year to consider changing your growing medium. Compost is a necessary part of gardening but a major component of most purchased compost is peat, a natural product made over thousands of years from partially composted mosses and plants in waterlogged, acidic bogs. These bogs are a very important store of carbon. Our use of these products is not only destroying age-old ecosystems, we are also contributing to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. So this year when shopping, please look out for “peat free” compost and do your bit for the environment! This month has also been designated No Mow May by the organisation Plantlife. The campaign doesn’t ask you to do much. In fact, it asks you to not do anything at all. Just lock up your lawnmower for the whole month and let the wild flowers in your lawn bloom, providing a feast of nectar for our hungry pollinators. The campaign ends on May 31 with a survey - “Every Flower Counts”. To find out more visit www.plantlife.org.uk

n 1st KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

I

t’s been a particularly brilliant month for 1st Keynsham Scouts, as the National Youth Agency has given clearance to return to face-to-face Scouting. Over 250 Scouts in the first week alone have been able to run around Chelwood, our Scout campsite, exploring the woods and honing their outdoor skills. The NHS has also handed Scout HQ back to 1st Keynsham Scouts, so activities can be organised there. The change in guidance meant that K2 Beaver Colony could meet up to say goodbye to their oldest members before they ‘swam up’ to Cubs after Easter. They also presented Chief Scout Bronze Awards to Finton, Seth, Leo, Emily, Ruairi and Callum. Bronze awards are the highest that Beavers can achieve, completing six challenge awards and four activity badges. Big congratulations to them all, and we’re sure they’ll have lots of fun and new adventures at Cubs! Avon Troop and Chew Troop were brushing up on their core Scouting skills, building open fires and cooking over the embers. It was a great opportunity for each troop to see each other in person, enjoy some marshmallows and baked potatoes, and for some to explore Chelwood for the first time. There have also been lots of new faces, so they are looking to invest the new members soon. Elsewhere, after planting sunflower seeds earlier in the year, Daniel from Rocky Beavers has earned a green Blue Peter badge with his photo being shown on the programme. It’s great to see that Scouts are helping to inspire the climate heroes of the future.

KEYNSHAM in Bloom members have now mown an area of Keynsham Cemetery in preparation for the development of their wildflower meadow project. Avon Wildlife Trust, Keynsham branch, have been to the cemetery to carry out an initial assessment of wildflower species currently in situ. We now need your help planting wildflower seeds, caring for and growing these on for planting out in the autumn. If you are interested in getting involved in this project, wildflower seed packs, seed trays, compost and growing instruction leaflets will be available for collection from the Keynsham Pocket Park (top of Avon Road at the junction of Gaston Avenue). Members of In Bloom will be on site to hand these out, every Saturday morning between 10am and 12 noon. Gavin Hardy, our Royal Horticultural Society outreach project leader, will also be running two online ‘How to plant wildflower seeds’ courses, with an opportunity to ask questions. Also we are supporting No Mow May, which encourages gardeners to put away their lawnmowers for one month to see what plants arrive within the grass. This is an interesting project to encourage wildlife of all LOW species.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

A Village Scandal Dilly Court Dilly Court’s books regularly appear in the top ten of the Sunday Times bestseller lists. She writes very popular historical, family fiction. This book is the second in The Village Secrets trilogy. It is spring in the village, April 1869, and Daisy is overjoyed to marrying Jay. The bluebells are out and the church bells are ringing. But Daisy has an overwhelming feeling of dread, and towards the end of the wedding festivities, Jay has disappeared. Is Daisy a wife or a widow? Who can support her and the household? As with all Dilly Court heroines, Daisy refuses to give up and finds a way out of her problems, because the secret of Jay’s disappearance is even more scandalous than she could have imagined. An engrossing, heart-warming tale.

Rosie Alan Titchmarsh As well as a respected garden writer and TV presenter, Alan Titchmarsh is also a popular fiction author. This is his fifth novel, set on the Isle of Wight, and begins with the arrest of Nick Robertson’s 87-yearold grandmother. Nick has become used to his grandmother Rosie's dotty

behaviour. She is determined that before life passes her by, she will live a little - or, preferably, a lot. But Nick also has to cope with two warring parents and a disastrous love life, so his ideal position would be for his grandmother to get on with things quietly. But, Rosie insists, there is no time like the present. Life is to be enjoyed to the full. So she'll help Nick find the soulmate he needs and he can help her make the most of her few remaining years and an investigation into her past that proves intriguing. A delightful novel, full of humour and romance. Again Alan Titchmarsh has created a novel that is witty and supports the belief that, at any age, life can be lived to the full. Adult Non-Fiction

Busy@Home Tony Crabbe

As we begin to ease out of lockdown and there are still some restrictions in place, this is a pertinent book. The author and family went into lockdown

but the work emails kept coming, the home schooling started and everyone demanded to be fed. As the day spins away from you, the book asks: “How will I get through this?” This is one of the self-help books that offers a great practical guide to help you and your family through this unsettling period. It also offers handy tips to thrive once everything returns to “normal”. Children's Fiction

Spaghetti Hunters Morag Hood Join Duck as he goes looking for his spaghetti. It is not going well, but Horse explains he is a great spaghetti hunter, because spaghetti is almost impossible to find. So Horse gathers all his hunting tools and goes on the Great Spaghetti Hunt. Join them as they appear to meet a snake and an earwig! But things do not look so bleak when they stumble across a recipe book. What will they find in there?

There’s No Such Things as Unicorns Lucy Rowland & Katy Halford I have been told by many younger visitors to Keynsham Library that unicorns are very

popular at the moment. So why not try this book? The little girl in the story is told by her brother that “there’s no such thing as unicorns”. Follow her search to the farm, park, zoo, beach and even her school to see if there are any unicorns there. On each page there is a hidden unicorn to look out for too. Enjoy!

PEN TO PAPER

Rainbow in the Road

May, 2021

n LETTER

Stop destroying our trees

Sitting in the bushes, close beside a busy road, sat a frog in all his wisdom, taking questions from a toad. A thunderstorm had happened by, and everything got wet, it was the sort of storm that even frogs and toads would not forget. But when it was all over, and the sky had shed its load, a burst of summer sunshine found a rainbow in the road. The toad looked at his friend, the frog, and asked if he knew why, such a luxury of colours could have fallen from the sky. The puddles glowed with indigo, green, yellow, blue and red, and so the frog gave it some careful thought, and this is what he said. “Where once we saw a rainbow, now we see that there is none, for so ferocious was that passing storm, it made the colours run.” The toad was moved to silence and so suitably impressed, as he marvelled at the gift with which his friend, the frog, was blessed. The frog, of course, was happy he could help his friend, the toad, and they blinked into the sunshine, right beside a busy road. AFTER a recent walk around Abbots Wood, I saw many trees that had been cut down and used to build dens. I know it is so important to enjoy the outdoors and to engage your children with it, but I was so shocked to see people had cut down the trees in order to do so. I found this very distressing. I remember planting those trees many years ago as a child myself so I think it upset me even more so. At a

time that climate change is so important, I feel we should not be abusing our wildlife and their habitats like this. I think it’s important to send a message out to people that cutting trees down is not acceptable. I hope people will see these photos and think twice about damaging our environment. Kate Hollister

Treasures made from trash ITEMS due to be dumped by residents at Keynsham Recycling Centre have been given a new lease of life on BBC One’s Money for Nothing programme. Production company Friel Kean Films spent two weeks filming at the recycling centre in Pixash Lane last summer. Entrepreneur Sarah Moore saved several items from being tipped and, together with a team of talented artisans, transformed them into stylish and valuable pieces, making money for residents who had no idea there was cash to be made from their trash. Councillor David Wood, Bath and North East Somerset Council cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “This is a fantastic example of how items deemed as junk can be saved and reused and shows how, with a little bit of imagination, there are many ingenious ways to upcycle or repurpose them. “Dumping at a recycling centre should always be a last resort and we’d encouraged people to offer unwanted items first on freecycling networks – who knows, your junk could be someone else’s treasure.” Over the past nine series of Money for Nothing, more than 650 unwanted items have been saved from being thrown in the skip, given a new lease of life and sold on, with over £55,000 of profits returned to members of the

n BRISTOL BASEBALL CLUB

Centre of excellence bid gets cash boost BRISTOL Baseball Club’s plans to create a centre of excellence at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham has received a major boost through the award of a £3,800 grant from Baseball and Softball UK (BSUK). The club put in a bid earlier this year for the funds to help develop its field by adding dugouts, batting cages, a new back stop for the second field and additional fencing. In addition to the BSUK grant, the club is adding match funding from its own fundraising, a Crowdfunding project and additional smaller grants and contributions. “This is a major boost for the club, its members, supporters and for baseball in the South West,” said club chairman Richard Evans. “We want to thank BSUK for having the confidence to support us and to everyone who contributed to this project over the last few months.” The club boasts 88 members across four adult mixed teams, a women’s team and a youth section, and hosted two weekends of the British Baseball Federation’s (BBF) national championships last season. The club moved to Somerdale Pavilion in 2017 with just two adult teams and 36 members. “As a player, I am really excited to see the club succeed in its long-term plans to improve its facilities for the benefit of the players, supporters and the sport in

Bournemouth Bears in the British Baseball Federation’s (BBF) AAA South West Division. This will be the first season the team has stepped up to AAA, which is one level below the National Baseball League. The club’s top team kicked off their season on April 25 with a friendly against Worcester Sorcerers at Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham before preparing to

take on the Bournemouth Bears on Sunday May 9. The Bats, Buccaneers and the Brunels will be in the South West SWBL/BBF A Division and, as well as local derbies, they will play against teams from Bournemouth, Cardiff, Cornwall, Weston-super-Mare and Taunton. The three teams start their league campaigns on Sunday May 16. The Bristol Bobcats, the club’s women’s team, have six weekends of baseball in the BBF National Women’s League and will be taking on teams from Sheffield, Cambridge, London and Slough. The Bobcats games are on Saturdays with the first taking place on May 22. All the games will be played under the BBF national Covid guidelines and the club has put in place a series of guidelines for its players. “It’s going to be great to be back playing after the difficult year we have all had because of the pandemic,” said Rhodri Theaker, the club’s head coach. “Our off season has gone so well that we have been able to add a brand new team at A level as well as pushing the Badgers up to AAA.” The regular season runs until the end of August, with the playoffs and finals being held during the first two weeks of September. The club is also holding a charity event on Sunday September 26 and the first ever Bristol Baseball Tournament over the weekend of October 2 and 3.

is an outdoor sport for everyone – one with health benefits and where, after a short introduction, you can take part in a game. All equipment is provided – just wear flat-soled shoes.”

If you are interested in trying croquet, the club’s beginners’ course of four weekly sessions starts on Sunday May 9. In line with Covid regulations, call Mo on 07929 733640.

Boys and girls aged 15 and under are being invited by the club to an open taster day on Saturday May 15 at 1pm at Somerdale Pavilion, Keynsham, which will be led by the club’s coaches. “One of our key development targets is to get more young people involved in the game and the club,” said Pete Godwin, the club’s director of youth. “We provide all the equipment and our DBS-checked coaches will be on hand to help with the development of skills.” Parents who are keen to get their children involved should contact the club through info@bristolbaseball.co.uk. the region,” said Jacob Bollinger, a member of the Bristol Bats. The club will now work with BSUK and Somerdale Pavilion to progress the plans with the aim of completing the improvements this summer. l Bristol Baseball Club players will be involved in more than 90 games this coming season. n CAMERTON & PEASEDOWN CROQUET

Competitors have a ball THE sun shone down on 12 players at Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club as they took part in a national ‘One Ball’ tournament in aid of the British Heart Foundation. ‘One Ball’ blends both Association and Golf Croquet – it is fast and exciting, challenging players’ skills and little grey cells. It consists of a series of singles games, with less experienced players having the benefit of extra turns or free shots to even things up. Five of the players had just started ‘One Ball’ this year - and one of these newcomers came second. Every game was hotly contested and always in the most sporting manner – players enjoyed their day and the picnic lunch, all

in line with Covid rules. The club has taken part in this national competition for some time, but this year it attracted more players than ever before. After a day of exciting croquet, John Rowley and Christina Sandford (the top two players) will be going to the final at Surbiton. There was a final shoot-out, and John narrowly beat Christina to win the new ‘One Ball’ trophy. The club raised £165 for the British Heart Foundation, which funds research and treatment that saves many people’s lives while supporting their families. Club chair Mo Boys said: “We are an all-inclusive club with close links to our local community. Croquet

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

A

fter months of being out of the water for a third time, the youngsters at Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club dived straight back into the pools with a full training schedule from April 12. The club were delighted to welcome back all of the under-18 swimmers and hope the Masters Squad can restart their training later in May, once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted further by the government. Despite the lack of training, Keynsham are delighted to be able to create some squad movement and enable some swimmers to start the transition through the club’s pathway to the more competitive squads. This comes ahead of Swim England’s Level X: Series 2, which will be run over several training sessions throughout this summer, and only once fitness levels return. Level X is a virtual gala to afford swimmers the chance to see their progression through competition until swimming galas can be held again. It gives the swimmers a goal and focus for their training, and the chance at a medal if ranked in the top three in any given event. The return to swimming also coincided with the club’s AGM, which was held on April 21 over Zoom, in which Lynne Bartlett was the elected the new club chairperson. Lynne’s journey with Keynsham began 32 years ago when her son Tom joined at the age of six. She became a club volunteer, timekeeper and worked through the coaching courses until gaining her Level Three coaching qualification. All three of Lynne’s children swam and competed for Keynsham at regional level. In 2020, Lynne and Thea Beament became joint head coaches. Thea headed up the Senior Squads and Lynne took the Junior Squads under her wing. Lynne retired from coaching in 2018 and focussed her attention on becoming the club’s coach representative on the committee. KASC has played a massive part in her and her families’ lives. Lynne’s

2016 Olympic medallist Siobhan-Marie O'Connor cannot compete in Tokyo this year but KASC looks forward to her visit

Thea Beament, swimming secretary, and Lynne Bartlett, chairperson

Taking the helm as club looks ahead fierce passion for Keynsham will be the new driving force behind the continued success of the club. Lynne takes over from John Warren, who was co-opted as immediate past chairperson. John was chairperson from 2014 but first became involved with Keynsham in 2008 when his daughters, Millie and Grace, started club swimming. John became a keen poolside helper, timekeeper and occasional team manager until taking on the chairperson role in 2014. Both John Warren and current club secretary Chris Metcalfe were made life members of Keynsham for their services to the club and the regional swimming community. Dom Taylor, club sponsor, ex-swimmer and generous supporter of the club,

was made an honorary member. Dave Beament was made president after Jean Findlay, who founded the club, sadly passed away in 2019. Dave has been heavily involved with the club for over 30 years as chairperson and club secretary and was the instigator of the performance partnerships with both Team Bath and City of Bristol Aquatics. Dave became involved with the club when both his children swam with Keynsham, and now two of his grandchildren are swimmers with the Prelim Squad. Dave is also president elect of Somerset Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and was due to take on the role of president of Somerset ASA this month. Further to these appointments,

John Warren reported that the club plans to continue to grow and develop sponsorship and other financial support, hold a championship gala, compete in the prestigious Arena League and eventually get back to a normal programme of events throughout 2021 and into 2022, including county and regional championships. John also expressed his sadness regarding the news that Keynsham’s favourite international swimmer, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, will not be competing at the Olympics in Tokyo this year, due to illness. The club is looking forward to Siobhan coming to visit and guest coach with Keynsham in the near future.

Become part of KASC Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club are looking for swimmers aged 6-8 years (school years 1, 2 and 3) who can swim one length of Keynsham Pool (25m) in each stroke. Why not give it a try? Individual trials take place weekly at Keynsham pool. Swimmers from all ages (including over-18s) are also invited to apply for a trial. If your child would like to join, contact thea.beament@ keynshamswimming.club or call 07891 684059. Or you can enquire via the club’s Facebook page.

n FRYS BOWLS CLUB Players back in action as season starts FRYS Bowling Club started the 2021 season recently. Unfortunately, most of our Wednesday and Saturday friendlies into mid-May have been cancelled, but we are able to run in-house games instead, which have proved popular. Frys first scheduled game for our Division 2 campaign was on Thursday April 29 against Long Ashton. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, we are unable to welcome spectators. n BATH CROQUET

Chance to have a free taste We've weathered the storm to start again

BATH Croquet reopened its lawns in glorious sunshine on March 29 and has been delighted to receive enquiries for a free taster session. The aim is to give a simple introduction to croquet in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with all equipment provided. Taster sessions at the club – which has some members from Keynsham - will continue through the summer months as further enquiries are received. Following the taster session, the option of signing up for two foundation-level coaching sessions is offered. These cost £5 per person

per session. At the end of these two sessions, you will have sufficient skills to start attending Golf Croquet club sessions or be ready for further coaching in Association Croquet. A reduced first-year subscription is offered for anyone wanting to join the club, which plays at Bath Recreation Ground. Recently joined member Ann Short said: “Thanks so much for the great induction. Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming.” To join a taster session or for further information, visit www.bathcroquet. com.

SALTFORD Lawn Tennis Club opened with two fun days, which were enjoyable and successful despite having all weathers in a day - and we played through it all! We are back to club organised sessions, in line with LTA Covid-19 guidelines, with ladies Monday morning, mixed tennis Monday and Thursday afternoons at 1pm, and club nights on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm. We have enjoyed some lovely sunny evenings. Anyone can come along to a session to try us out before joining the club. We have just started a new financial year and currently are open to new members of all ages and abilities. We have an amazing firstyear membership deal for adults and families that is valid to March 31, 2022. A full coaching programme is now up and running on Monday and Wednesday afternoon/evenings and Saturday mornings. We have also added cardio (fun tennis based on circuit fitness classes) so we can get back into shape after lockdown. All coaching can be booked on our website and is open to nonmembers, although members do get a discount. Our coach James has started delivering a breakfast club at Saltford Primary School. See our website for more details and to book. We are looking forward to Avon Summer League tennis, starting this month, and have entered four teams (two ladies’ and two men’s). For more information on coaching and membership, visit the website at www.saltfordtennisclub.co.uk or email sec.saltfordtennis@ gmail.com.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB

Come and try with us BOWLS England is organising its Bowls Big Weekend over the spring bank holiday, when affiliated clubs can hold events to promote outdoor bowls. It is a very doable sport and neither age nor gender has any impact on your ability to play. It is a great way to relax, keep fit and make new friends. As part of this campaign, Keynsham Bowls Club will be holding a ‘come and try’ day at its

green in Keynsham Park on Sunday May 30. There will be two one-hour sessions in the morning, at 10am and 11am, and two more in the afternoon, 2pm and 3pm. These will offer a chance for anyone, on their own, or with family or friends, to come along and give bowls a try. Anyone interested can book a place at one of the sessions by emailing club secretary David
