'Putrid smell' protest at bid for food waste plant A HUGE plant for converting food and farming waste into power, planned in the green belt near Keynsham, would cause misery, neighbours have claimed. People living near the site in Charlton Field Lane say the smells already emanating from the former quarry make them feel sick. They fear that the proposed anaerobic digester would increase odour, noise and traffic. But the people behind the application for the biogas plant say the smells would be “negligible” and the development would bring great benefits. Ward councillors have called for the scheme to be brought before a planning committee at Bath & North East Somerset Council, but a date has not yet been set. Keynsham’s Councillor Alan Hale, who raised the case at a B&NES Council meeting on October 10, said the development was a “potential disaster” and the whole of southern Keynsham would suffer.

An aerial view of the site of the proposed food waste plant

Food waste plant fears From Page 1 Council planning website to the proposal, which has the reference number 19/02919/MINW One couple who live nearby said in their objection: “The smell two weeks ago was so bad we couldn’t open our windows or doors to sit in the garden.” A man added: “I cannot stress how awful this smell is – it’s putrid and vile, to the point where it makes you feel nauseous. Friends of mine have even complained of burning eyes and shortness of breath. “We have gone from having the sweet smell of chocolate and caramel floating across the air to a foul-smelling faeces smell that sticks in the nostrils and throat.” A woman with a lung condition said the odour had made her “physically sick”. A consultant representing three of the 30 objectors said the impact will be on a “totally different scale” to the last plans. He said work on the previous plant had resulted in neighbouring homes frequently being flooded with a “pungent, foul-smelling waste”, and warned that could be exacerbated. A man who lives downwind of the site, in Bilbie Green, said it would make it extremely difficult to sell property. Another objector said the smell would be a “constant harassment of the senses” and feared the “juggernauts” would be a “nightmare” on the already congested roads. He said the facility would be better placed in Avonmouth or Severn Beach as the roads are

better suited and emergency services are trained for industrial incidents. The smaller plant was due to go live in the spring of 2017, but Companies House shows applicant Resourceful Earth Ltd went into administration in October that year. What was built did not match the agreed plans. The new scheme is from the similarly named Resourceful Earth Anaerobic Limited, which according to Companies House does not share any officers with its near-namesake. “The site has been used for industrial activity for the past 80 years and is currently occupied by an incomplete anaerobic digestion plant which is in a disused state,” it says. “The proposals seek to create a high-quality environment, with an orderly, functional character, which enhances the existing degraded quality of the site and provides a safe, attractive environment for those working at the anaerobic digestion plant. “Once the plant is active as a commercially viable unit, the economic benefits of this will provide for consideration to be given to improving the appearance and function in the old quarry.” The applicants say the plant will help divert food waste from landfill. It will use energy crops like maize from local farmers, who will in turn be provided with nutrient rich bio-fertiliser, one of the products of the process. Primary expands with bright new look

CASTLE Primary School in Keynsham now has the capacity to take another 210 children. A new teaching block, incorporating four new classrooms and a hall, has been built and the existing school has been remodelled. Classrooms and facilities have had a substantial refurbishment and outside areas have been redesigned with new and enlarged playground areas, natural habitats and playing fields. The new building, designed by BBA Architects of Bath, has won a Building Control Award for Building and Design Quality. The main contractor was H Mealing and Sons of Bath. The expansion was part of a £7.5m programme funded by Bath & North East Somerset Council providing additional primary school places to meet growing demand from local housing developments and general population growth. Keynsham will also see a new primary school open next year. Two Rivers CE Primary will admit reception-class pupils into temporary accommodation on the Wellsway campus until the school’s permanent buildings on the Hygge Park housing development, funded by the Department for Education, open nearby. Open events take place this month - for

n NEWS SALTFORD Community Library and Post Office is extending its opening hours. The new timetable, introduced at the start of the facility’s second year, is aimed at meeting the needs of school children and local businesses. The opening hours will be MondayWednesday 9am-5pm (closed for lunch 1pm-2pm) and Friday 9am-5pm (closed for lunch 1pm-2pm), and Saturday 9am-noon. It will be closed on Thursdays and Sundays. Saltford Parish Council has committed £4,000 and Saltford Community Association £2,000 to fund the additional hours, which will start from Monday November 4. Organisers said that after consulting residents, library volunteers and the Saltford Post Office clerks, they had found that school children could only access the library after school on a Monday or on a Saturday morning. Now they will be able to access library services after school four times a week as well as Saturday mornings. Also, businesses had indicated that the hours did not meet their needs and they would prefer the post office to be open at the end of the working day. The change has been approved by Post Office Ltd. Saltford Parish Council chair Chris Warren said the additional funding had been unanimously approved. “The parish council have supported this key community amenity since its inception and have high praise for the efforts of the management committee whose hard work is evident. The parish council is pleased to provide financial assistance so that Saltford’s residents and businesses have better access – and can benefit from - the services offered.” David Halton, chair of the volunteer management committee, said library volunteers had also come together to support the longer hours, including several new volunteers who have stepped forward to help fill the increased number of shifts on the rota.

Hopes rise for rail station revival PLANS to reopen Saltford Station could take a big step forward before the end of the year. Bath & North East Somerset Council has given overwhelming support to the idea and will urge the West of England Combined Authority, which has responsibility for transport across the area, to champion it. The hope is that the long-awaited station revival will form part of a Greater Bristol Rail Feasibility Study, which is due to be completed this autumn. This would strengthen bids to the Department for Transport and Network Rail for funding. Liberal Democrat Councillor Duncan Hounsell spoke up for Saltford Station at a B&NES full council meeting. He said: “A reopened station is not just about providing Saltford’s commuters with a gateway to the awaited half-hourly Metro West services, but also playing a part in reducing road traffic and pollution in Bath, and helping to address the climate emergency by reducing car use. There is a strong case for a Saltford Station to be championed by WECA.” He pointed out that the majority of residents in Saltford and the surrounding villages want the station, which could also

Beware of toxic products at home

W

e share our hearts and our homes with our four-legged family members, so we owe it to them to provide a safe environment in which to live. Today I would like to talk about common things we might find in our homes that can be toxic to pets. Outdoor dangers include rodenticides, fertilisers, products to melt ice, and glow sticks. If your pet is exposed to a rat poison, please be sure to bring the packaging and a sample of the poison if possible, since there are several kinds and the treatment for them differs. Fertilisers can form impactions in the intestines, products to melt ice often contain high levels of sodium, and glow sticks when chewed can cause foaming and drooling. Lilies can be found in the garden or indoors and are extremely toxic to cats. Lilies cause cats to go into kidney failure and are deadly to them. Keep this in mind if you get a bouquet! Indoors we need to watch for foods, medications and household products. In the food category, xylitol tops the list because it is an artificial sweetener that is found in many products, including candy, gum, vitamins, peanut butter and other foods, and some medications. It can cause a life-threatening drop in blood sugar, so getting your pet to the vet ASAP along with the packaging of the product is important. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in some dogs, even in small quantities. Chocolate can also be toxic, dark more so than milk. Toxic medications include ibuprofen in dogs and cats, and paracetamol for cats, and human antidepressants. Never give these medications to your pets. If they are exposed, get them to your vet quickly. Remember that essential oils can be toxic to cats, who like to lick them. They can cause burns to the tongue, GI tract ulceration, coma and liver failure. If you have any doubt about something being toxic to your pet, please contact your veterinarian for more information. The sooner we know about a potential exposure to a toxin, the more able we are to treat successfully.

The scene of an accident on the Wellsway in June this year

Have your say on cutting speed limit RESIDENTS are being invited to a meeting to discuss reducing the speed limit along the Wellsway following a spate of traffic collisions. In the last 18 months there have been three major incidents where cars have been written off due to excessive speed, and the narrow section of the road just before the junction with Bath Road causes large vehicles to mount the pavement, resulting in safety concerns for pedestrians. In addition, residents exiting the Rockhill estate fear they are at risk of speeding cars, and there is also no pavement for pedestrians at this exit. Also, HGV drivers have been found to continually breach the 7.5-ton restriction as the signs at the Bath Road junction are facing in the wrong direction. At the meeting on Monday November 4, the possibility of reducing the speed limit along the road from 40mph to 30mph or 20mph will be discussed, along with enforcement issues including Community Speed Watch and a permanent speed camera being installed. The meeting will be held at

the New Inn from 7pm-8.30pm, and local councillors Hal MacFie and Andy Wait will be on hand to listen to residents’ comments and suggestions. A plan will then be taken to the B&NES highways team and presented to the cabinet members for transport. In September, Hal MacFie presented details of various traffic-calming measures to 25 residents. At the meeting, residents discussed solutions such as speed tables, training for residents in Community Speed Watch operation, and speedactivated roundel signs. Residents are now actively monitoring accidents, nearmisses and HGV offences and will inform the community police team of their records. Mr MacFie said: “Please come along and let us hear your views. If there are serious disagreements on the way forward, it is likely we will put it to the vote, so your presence will be meaningful.” To find out more about the meeting or confirm your attendance, please contact Hal MacFie by calling 07786436656 or emailing hal@halmacfie.com

Call for urgent ban on boat moorings at beauty spot IMMEDIATE action is needed to sort out problems caused by boat users in Mead Lane and on the Saltford riverbank, parish councillors say. They are calling on Bath & North East Somerset Council to ban any boats from mooring at Mead Lane until the issues are resolved. In the longer term, they want a winter ban on mooring and a summer limit of 48 hours. B&NES has been carrying out consultation about the future of the site and is expected to make a decision next month. Saltford Environment Group would like the riverbank at Mead Lane to be made a local nature reserve, a plan that has already won backing from the parish council and Wessex Water. The consultation follows a trial mooring scheme in 2017 and 2018 that saw boats staying for more than 14 days at a time at a site that has no marina facilities. In its response, the parish council said: “SPC is concerned that the B&NES mooring trial has exacerbated the problems of non-compliance with mooring limits, anti-social behaviour and heavy littering from a minority of boaters, as well as the disruption caused to residents, visitors and other river users and damage to the flora and fauna of the

riverbank.Evidence submitted by local residents to B&NES Council shows that these issues have got considerably worse as the trial progressed from 2017 into 2018, and the situation has continued to worsen during 2019. “The trial has clearly demonstrated that Mead Lane, as a hitherto unspoilt beauty spot in the green belt and in close proximity to residential housing, is unsuitable and impracticable for moorings which require continual management.” The council says the riverbank and parking bollards have been damaged by vehicles and by misuse as mooring posts., while inconsiderate parking has blocked access for emergency vehicles and Wessex Water staff. It also calls for a ban on sleeping overnight in vehicles in the lane. Saltford Environment Group has been urging supporters to back the campaign for a nature reserve at what it calls “this important and iconic location”. It says that before the riverbank was stabilised in 2005, Mead Lane was rarely used for mooring. Now, and particularly since the trial, large boats are mooring there, and the group fears that this is causing destabilisation of the bank again.

High Street shaping up

PRELIMINARY work for the £1.5 million improvements planned for Keynsham High Street has been completed. Residents and motorists had to cope with a series of lane and road closures last month so that surveys could be carried out. The main work to improve what the council calls the public realm will include footpath decluttering, widening and resurfacing as well as better cycling and bus stop facilities. It is expected to begin in next summer and be completed by spring 2021, and the hope is that it will ‘future-proof’ the High Street.

ON THE BEAT

t’s nearly Christmas or so it seems. I enjoyed my first mince pie just the other day, which generally means it’s nearly Bonfire Night. This time of year is the start of our high demand, with events such as Halloween, Bonfire Night, the Remembrance Parade and Keynsham Winter Festival. Along with the demand these events cause, we also have a natural increase in crime. We are already seeing an increase in theft from motor vehicles, especially tools from vans. These are quick turn-round items for thieves, so to prevent offences, remove the tools from vehicles, park in well-lit, exposed locations, and use CCTV to monitor vehicles when parked. Add additional security measures to vehicles, from alarms to deadlocks and also tool chests, and lastly security-mark all your tools. It’s really frustrating when we find stolen goods and are unable to relocate them to their owners. n Bonfire Night is a really busy time for all the emergency services when, for the most part, a bit of

with PC James Evans common sense would prevent the need for them to attend. All the emergency services are stretched to breaking point, so if you’re having a firework party, please adhere to the recommended safe distances for the display and have a bucket of both sand and water available to deal with any issues that might arise. n I harp on about this every year as the weather changes, but it’s worth repeating: the other type of incident that occurs a lot at this time of year are Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs). Most are attributable to driver error or defective vehicles. You should regularly check your driving documents to make sure they are

in order. We have recently seen an increase in insurance companies cancelling insurance policies for late payments, resulting in people driving with no insurance, an offence which incurs six penalty points on your licence and a substantial fine. It will also result in your car being seized. We also have new powers to seize vehicles which have been untaxed for three months and are found by police being used on a public highway. Once you’ve checked that your documents are in order, make sure you check your vehicle regularly. As you can imagine, with police vehicles being driven at high speeds, we check our vehicles daily, but I would suggest that a weekly check is adequate. These sorts of checks are now routine in the driving test and should be adopted by everyone. Even something as innocuous as having no water in your washer bottle does amount to an offence, so please check your vehicles regularly. Remember - it is a privilege to have a driving licence and not a right, so to keep it you have to abide by the rules of the road.

n NEWS DONATIONS totalling thousands of pounds have been collected as the community continues to rally around to help Keynsham man Roger Trainer. The donations just keep on coming for the 64-year-old father-of-two, who is widely known for his love of Bristol City and charity work. Roger is battling Parkinson’s disease and is no longer able to go to City games and has had to give up work as a roofer. Roger’s friends Steve Jones, Steve Maggs and Lloyd Russell got the ball rolling by setting up a Just Giving page to help ease the financial burden Roger and his family are facing. They had originally hoped to raise £500 for Roger, who they described as ‘a proud man who would say he doesn’t want any fuss, a man who goes out of his way for others.’ However, with the Just Giving page and a collection around the pubs outside Bristol City’s Ashton Gate Stadium, they raised a staggering £2,500. They brought Roger – who is known as The General - to tears when they presented him with the cash at The Lock Keeper in Keynsham. He thought he was going for a quiet drink with a couple of friends, but there were more than 150 people waiting for him. They also presented him with a signed Robins shirt donated by the club. The three friends, who grew up with Roger, said they just wanted to ‘raise a few bob’ but the amount raised and size of the crowd exceeded all their expectations. Lloyd said: “It’s staggering that we raised so much in just 10 days, but not that surprising when you think how well-known and well-like Roger is. “He is one of the most caring guys you’ll ever meet, he’s done so much for the community. “Roger was so overwhelmed when he saw everyone waiting for him. He’s a very proud man but his face said it all.” Others have now come forward to launch further fund-raising efforts. This includes a Go Fund Me Page which has been set up by Cameron Thorpe of Keynsham. Lloyd added: “More people said they wanted to donate after we’d handed the

Concern over sewage leak from manhole near park A RESIDENT has raised concerns about sewage overflowing from a manhole cover near a park in Keynsham. Alistair Gilroy has lived in the area for 15 years and has noticed for the last three years that the manhole cover (between the Fox and Hounds Lane car park and the Memorial Park) leaks every time there is heavy rain. Despite reporting it to Wessex Water, he says that the problem keeps recurring, and he is concerned that it could be a health hazard. He told the Voice: "When I walk my dog and it has rained heavily, I notice that the pumping station spews raw sewage from the manhole cover near the path. “I’ve reported this several times to Wessex Water and their only response is to send a lad down with a broom to clear the streamers of toilet paper. “It’s getting beyond a joke now, especially when it runs downhill across the path and on to the grass. It’s got to be a health hazard when people walk past with their dogs or children.”

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 9082121 or 07715770448

A spokesman from Wessex Water confirmed that new pressure-sealed manhole covers are being fitted at the site. The spokesman said: “We’ve had reports of flooding from manhole covers on the overflow pipe from our pumping station at times of very heavy rainfall and high river flows, so we’re arranging for pressure-sealed covers to be fitted to reduce the risk of this happening.” Mr Gilroy said he understands that Wessex Water has permission from the Environment Agency to pump sewage into the river when necessary, but the Wessex Water spokesman said this does not happen. The spokesman said: “Raw sewage is not pumped into the river. A combined sewer overflow (CSO) comes into operation during exceptionally wet weather to protect homes and businesses from sewage flooding.” For more information about CSOs, and how and when they operate, visit www.wessexwater.co.uk/ services/sewerage/combined-overflows

Down Memory Line! FORGET Memory Lane - residents from Kingfisher Lodge Care Centre in Saltford went for a nostalgic trip on the Reminiscence Railway! Here's one of them, Brian, on the Avon Valley Railway steam train at Bitton with conductor Ian, who helped ensure the visitors had a trip to remember. Activities co-ordinator Victoria Hunt organised the visit after several residents said they dreamed of travelling on a steam train again. AVR made them very welcome and were able to accommodate three wheelchairs. Victoria said: "Our residents were able to enjoy a trip into the countryside. The views were amazing and they loved seeing cows and horses along the way. "The train's steam, the train's horn and the amazing help from all the staff made this a fantastic afternoon. The conductor even stayed with them whole trip. A great afternoon was had by all."

New home for growing church A FAST-growing Keynsham church is on the move. One Church Keynsham, which started with 11 people just over two years ago, now attracts dozens of families and young people to its services. It has met until now at the Somerdale Pavilion and its new home will be the IKB academy in Bath Road. Chris Williams, from the church, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue serving the Keynsham community the best we can and we’re excited about continuing our work in Keynsham.” One Church Keynsham’s carol concert in 2018 attracted more than 150 people, and this year the aim is to double that total for the Love Christmas carol concert and children’s Christmas show in the Keynsham Space on December 8. Mr Williams said: “Our entire Christmas programme in December will be based on all the reasons why people love Christmas, with lots of great opportunities to visit church, whether for the first time ever or if you have recently moved to the area and are looking for a great Christian community to be a part of.” Find out more online at weareone.church

Park revamp work starts WORK has started on a major revamp for Kelston Road park in Keynsham. New seats and signs are being installed and paths are being improved. An all-weather ball games and seating area will be developed and will incorporate a scooter track and hopscotch. The site for this provision has been moved so it is further away from neighbouring properties and better screened by tree planting. New junior football goals are included in the improvements, and residents have been assured that these will be far enough away from houses to reduce the likelihood that balls will be kicked into gardens. The second phase of the changes to the park will be better play facilities. All of the current play equipment and safety surface will be removed. A council spokesman said: “The play design is still in progress but will include a range of modern play equipment focused on active play for all ages and abilities, along with picnic facilities. “The new play equipment will reflect the results of the park consultation survey and Keynsham Town Council's children’s survey. It is expected that all works will be completed by summer 2020.” Residents have asked for inclusive and accessible play equipment to be included. The improvements will be funded by a £25,000 grant from Enovert Community Trust, an

Footbridge closed for safety probe A FOOTBRIDGE over the weir in Keynsham Memorial Park has been closed for safety reasons. Bath & North East Somerset Council has found that the beams of the bridge have decayed, and further investigations are needed. The bridge is more than 25 years old and is known as a Glulam bridge, due to its method of construction from glued laminated timber. The council shut the bridge on October 16. It has put up barriers at both sides of the bridge and has signposted alternative routes for pedestrians. Council leader Councillor Dine Romero said: “The safety of residents is our priority, so we have made the decision to close the bridge until further notice while we fully investigate its condition and decide the next steps. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope that people understand why we have taken this urgent action. The council said it does not yet have a timescale for when the bridge will be reopened.

The location can be easily identified by The Crown public house with its distinctive corner. On the right, the house at right angles to the road still stands and beyond it is the end of the former almshouses; none of the other buildings remain. We have no date for the picture, but it includes a motor lorry, possibly making a delivery to the pub, which suggests it may be in the late 1920s.

Campaign on plastic packaging

Life-savers honoured at cathedral VOLUNTEERS from Keynsham Life Saving Club have been presented with awards during a ceremony at Worcester Cathedral. The Royal Life Saving Society recognised the six volunteers who, between them, have given more than 36 years of service to the society. During their Sunday evening training sessions, members of Keynsham Life Saving Club learn first-aid, water-based rescue skills and how to keep themselves and their friends safe near water. Club members regularly compete at life-saving competitions across the region and the club also runs open-water training sessions so members can practise their skills in a real-life environment. Club chairman David “Blondie” Fielding said: “Over 300 people drown every year in the UK, and most of these deaths occur in rivers and canals. The majority of people who drown are walkers and KEYNSHAM’S first dementia-friendly church service proved a great success. The 20-minute service was held at St Dunstan's church last month. Seven people living with dementia and their carers attended and were supported by representatives from other churches in Keynsham and Saltford. The idea for the monthly service came from Barbara Outhwaite, who worked with Churches Together in Keynsham, and Keynsham and Saltford Dementia Action Alliance, to bring it about. She said: “The first service was a very positive start to this new initiative and reassured me that our efforts were worthwhile in enabling those living with dementia to continue to follow their faith in a supportive and non-challenging environment.” Alan Hale, chairman of K&SDAA, said: “This initiative fits in well with our ongoing work to making Keynsham and Saltford more dementia friendly. I have every faith that the church services will grow and attract more people living with dementia.”

runners who never intended to be in the water in the first place. “At Keynsham Life Saving Club we teach water safety in a fun and enjoyable environment. We have a fantastic team of highly qualified volunteer instructors and committee members who are all passionate about life-saving. It is great to see their dedication recognised by the Royal Life Saving Society UK on the national stage.” Keynsham Life Saving Club trains from 6:30-8:30pm on Sundays at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre. Membership costs £55 per term and is open to anyone aged eight-plus. KEYNSHAM’S battlers against single-use plastics are set to step up their campaign. Plastic Free Keynsham (Surfers against Sewage) is asking local individuals, organisations and businesses to commit to reducing use of ‘disposable’ items. The group has agreed to campaign to encourage takeaways to change their packaging for more sustainable containers, and also to try to reduce litter. It is asking organisations to stop using at least three items of singleuse plastic, transferring instead to biodegradable or reusable sources. Lisa O’Brien, from the group, said: “Individuals can play a role too. Plastic cups, plates, cutlery, bags, bottles, straws and stirrers which are labelled ‘disposable’ and are often thrown away after one use, could be washed and used again.” The group, established last year to bring together interested people and organisations, intends to meet regularly and welcomes anyone interested in taking part in the campaign. Church holds service for people with dementia On Sunday November 3, the second service will be a Remembrance Service and will start at 3pm, last for half an hour and be followed by a tea. While primarily for those living with dementia or any type of memory problem and their carers and families, the services will be open to anyone. St Dunstan's Church is on Bristol Road and has a good car park, wheelchair access into the church and toilet facilities for disabled people in the adjacent church hall. K&SDAA also holds Music for the Mind sessions every second and fourth Thursday at St Dunstan's Church from 10.30am to 12.15pm. As part of its work to make Keynsham more dementia friendly, the alliance offers advisory services for the public, groups and organisations and businesses.

n NEWS Families' Rainbow Resource FAMILIES of children and young people with additional needs can take advantage of discounted entry to attractions across Bath & North East Somerset. The council is reminding families to apply for the free-ofcharge card aso they don’t miss out on the special offers. The council’s Rainbow Resource scheme provides those aged up to 25 with a special educational need or disability a wallet-sized card that allows them concessions. It saves them having to carry their confidential Disability Living Allowance letter and also allows them to discreetly alert staff if additional support is needed. The Rainbow Resource card enables concessions on entry to attractions such as Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park in Keynsham, the Egg theatre in Bath, and Bristol Zoo. Rachel, a parent carer from Chew Valley, has used a Rainbow Resource card to get discounted entry at several places across B&NES and Bristol. She said: “It’s great to know that with the concessional entry, we are able to stay as long or as short a time as my daughter needs. It’s also reassuring to know that the venue is more understanding of the needs of my family.” Apply for a Rainbow Resource card online at www. rainbowresource.org.uk

Tree of thanks from hospice THE people of Keynsham and Saltford have been thanked for their support for the West’s children’s hospice. Frances Kenneally, community fund-raiser at Charlton Farm, said the charity had been boosted by the Children’s Hospice South West shop window display at Co-op Funeral Directors in Keynsham High Street. She said: “We’ve installed a tree with heart leaves. Each leaf has the name of a group or business in Keynsham or Saltford that has supported us in the past 12 months. We are so grateful for all the money that’s been raised so far, including the many individual donations. We would like to thank Co-op Funeral Directors for giving us the opportunity to say thank-you to the local people.” CHSW’s Charlton Farm, based in North Somerset, is the local hospice families in the area travel to for short breaks with their children. It exists to make the most of the lives of children and young people with life-limited conditions. It offers respite, palliative, end-of-life and bereavement services to families completely free of charge. Frances said: “It’s due to the support from members of the community that CHSW is able to continue to give these families the care they need. The cost of providing specialist care for children with life-limiting conditions rises year-on-year and the demand on our services is increasing. Keynsham ASC members celebrating the start of their NASL campaign and proudly displaying their team colours

Splash the cash to help our club

KEYNSHAM Amateur Swimming Club has launched a campaign to buy competitionstandard blocks to be installed at the town leisure centre as part of its refurbishment. To maintain the highest levels of training and be able to continue to produce county, regional, national and even Olympic swimmers, the club is planning for six new adjustable starting blocks to be installed in the newly updated leisure centre swimming pool in time for the reopening in early 2020. “Our existing blocks are fairly dated and a little wobbly, and it would very much benefit our swimmers to have competitionstandard blocks for training. We are calling on the generosity of our community and local businesses to help us reach our target of £1,500.” explained Keynsham ASC. Good-quality starting blocks would also give the club the option of hosting galas at Keynsham Leisure Centre which would draw hundreds of competitors and their parents to the town, benefiting local shops, restaurants and hotels. If you or your business would like to help Keynsham ASC by donating money towards the new blocks, you can do so by

visiting https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/kasc Another way you can help is by providing continued support through sponsorship. Please contact tanya.oliver@ keynshamswimming.club to learn more. n Keynsham began their 2020 National Arena Swimming League campaign on Saturday October 12 by taking their fastest team of swimmers, ranging from 10 years to 18-plus, to compete in the first round of the NASL Western Premier Division at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Weston-super-Mare. Coaches Kay Rex and Lynne Bartlett, supported by club captains Zach Derrick, Georgia Gussey and Sam Meredith, led the 30-strong Keynsham squad to finish fifth at their gala with a total of 140 points. “I am very proud of everyone’s performance as a team. After what has been a tough period, it’s always good to see hard work paying off,” said boys’ club captain Zach Derrick. The NASL, which has been running for more than 50 years, is the premier swimming league in England and Wales, with 333 teams

competing across six different leagues. The Western league consists of 51 clubs from the South West of England and South Wales, and is divided into three divisions. There are three rounds in the league and the top teams from across all six leagues will go on to compete in the cup finals in early 2020. In the spirit of the NASL, Keynsham wore their team colours with pride, and this vivid display, which was equally matched by volume, saw Keynsham ASC awarded prizes from the NASL for sharing their colours across social media. Round two takes place on Saturday November 9 at Millfield School Swimming Pool, where Keynsham are aiming to achieve a similar result to secure their position in the Premier Division for 2021. n The club are looking forward to getting back to their home pool and will be holding trials in the new year. If your child is a strong swimmer aged seven or over and is interested in joining a competitive swimming club, please contact thea.beament@ keynshamswimming.club to reserve a place on the waiting list for the next trial.

Author Ryan unleashes more zombies

AN AUTHOR from Keynsham is looking forward to the release of his third book next year. Ryan Colley studied psychology at UWE and went on to work as a manager for Bristol Community Health. He has always had a keen interest in writing and reading horror books. He decided to try to write a British ZomPoc (Zombie Apocalypse) story himself and started writing the Among the Dead series alongside his day job. The series follows 23-year-old Sam, who leaves the safety of his family and the quarantined city of Bristol, to find Alice - the love of his life. Ryan told Keynsham Voice: “I won a few creative writing awards at school, but I only started taking my writing seriously in 2016. I read a horror book about zombies and thought I could do better, so I decided to give it a go. “It was only going to be a short story at first, but it grew from there. The school hosted a FareShare South West Big Breakfast to raise awareness of the charity’s work in tackling hunger. Children had the chance to help prepare fruit smoothies with the help of volunteers from the school and from FareShare South West, while chef Adrian Kirikmaa, from the St Monica Trust, came along to prepare fresh pancakes. The breakfast was organised by Zest Catering, which provides meals for the school and others in the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust and has formed a successful partnership with FareShare South West, a food distribution charity. Zest Catering’s operations manager Claire Mansri said: “It was an amazing morning. Ours was the biggest event of the week, with more than 120 pupils and parents attending. “Chandag Junior school staff gave their time and came in early to help set up, prepare and serve the children alongside the Zest team, providing cereals, toast, fresh fruit and juices, all provided from surplus food via Fareshare. “I spoke to some of the children who said they were excited to try the 'green stuff' in the fruit smoothies (kale) and they were so full they would be able to learn all day!” FareShare South West is expanding rapidly. It has quadrupled its work to tackle child hunger in the last 12 months - its food is now eaten by about 4,000 children in the region every day. It runs breakfast clubs and supplies food for needy children in the school holidays. This youngster was one of many people who braved a deluge to take part in a Macmillan coffee morning in Keynsham. Organiser Debbie Duffy said: “It was pouring with rain, but I put up a gazebo on my drive in Cranmore Avenue and we carried on. I raised £210 from friends, family and passers-by, and I’d like to say a big thankyou to everyone who attended, donated and made cakes.”

Two Rivers school to give pupils a warm welcome

TWO Rivers CE Primary School is a new school for Keynsham and will admit its first reception-class pupils next September. Wellsway Multi Academy Trust is working with B&NES Council and the Department for Education to open the school, which will have a Church of England ethos and will be open to everyone. The school will take its name from an important geographical feature of Keynsham, the confluence of the rivers Chew and Avon. Its permanent site will be in the Hygge Park housing development near Wellsway School. Until the state-of-the-art buildings are ready, sometime in 2021/22, children and staff will be housed in temporary accommodation on the Wellsway campus. Four of the 13 schools already run by Wellsway Multi Academy Trust - Wellsway School, IKB Academy, Chandag Infants and Chandag Juniors - are already on this site. Wellsway Multi Academy Trust has an

excellent track record of primary school performance. Like others in the trust, pupils at Two Rivers Primary will enjoy access to trust facilities at other schools, such as science experience days at IKB Academy and sports events at Wellsway Sports Centre. Staff will benefit from collaborating with other schools in the trust and can draw on a wealth of skills and expertise. School meals will be provided by the trust’s own Zest Catering, which recently won ‘Best In House Caterer’ at the national EduCatering Awards. If you are interested in finding out, you can come to one of the information events which will be held at the Crest Nicholson marketing suite in the Hygge Park development, as follows: l Wednesday November 20, 6pm – 7pm l Saturday November 23, 11am – 1pm Please visit www.wellswaymat.com for more details.

Alderman honour BRYAN Organ, pictured, a councillor for 32 years until earlier this year, has been made an Honorary Alderman by Bath & North East Somerset Council. During the ceremony, Keynsham Councillor Brian Simmonds delivered a humorous testimony, saying that Bryan had been a councillor nearly as long as the Romans had been in Bath and it was likely that, during more than three decades of service, he had forgotten more legislation than new councillors would ever learn. Further tributes were paid by councillors from other political parties. The presentation was made by the Chair of Council, Councillor Eleanor Jackson.

Pumpkins rise and shine

ADULTS and children alike descended on the pumpkin patch as the ageless tradition returned to Keynsham after 15 years. Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park brought back ‘pick your own pumpkin’ to the farm as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. It was a case of re-living history as Avon Valley Farm used to be the largest ‘pick your own’ farm in the South West. And families weren’t short of choice as there were more than 15,000 pumpkins to choose from. Every day throughout October,

people of all ages could be seen eagerly selecting their pumpkins and taking them home ready to carve. One lucky pumpkin picker also won a solid gold pumpkin necklace worth £1,000 as there was a ‘golden ticket’ hidden in one of the pumpkins. Pumpkins cost between £2 and £12 and there were wheelbarrows to help people transport the ‘absolute whoppers.’ The pumpkin patch also had retro fete games, music, entertainment, food and drink. Top judo medal for Isabella ISABELLA Cooper, 14, from Keynsham, brought home a medal from the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships. Isabella, who trains with Team Bath and the community judo club based at Bath University, won her bronze medal at the event in Wolverhampton, in the pre-cadets -57kgs weight category, which was one of the largest categories. There were 17 national and international girls competing in this section alone, and Isabella had five fights, with girls from Northern Ireland, Scotland and South Africa. Miss Maggs. director of sport at Isabella’s school Redmaids’ High, said: “It takes a tremendous amount of hard work and discipline to compete at this level. So we are all very proud of what Isabella has achieved.” Isabella achieved further success in October, competing in the Emmen Tournament as part of a Dutch Tour with the Western Area Judo Squad, where she was awarded a bronze medal.

Michael's inspiring look at life on earth October saw our first indoor meeting of the new season and the last field outing of the old season, writes chairman Dave Sage. Our first speaker at the Baptist church hall was Michael Pitts, award-winning diver and underwater cameraman. His return after less than a year is unprecedented, such was the impression he made last year. His work features in wildlife blockbusters, including Blue Planet, Trials of Life and Deadly 60. The subject of his talk last month was the Galapagos Islands, the volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador, South America. These islands were visited by Charles Darwin on his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, and gave him huge inspiration and a wealth of evidence to support his theory of evolution by natural

Michael’s well-illustrated talk, including some memorable video sequences (not only underwater), vividly highlighted the genetic and biological diversity of the islands. This included the variation among finches on the different islands, which Darwin saw as evidence of natural selection following geographical isolation in differing environmental conditions, selecting features which increased survival prospects, such as beak size and thickness. n BACK TO NATURE season was to Dolebury warren on the Mendips, where we were lucky to have about the only dry three hours of the entire weekend. The previous damp weather was very useful, because we were looking for fungi, which thrive in such conditions, particularly at this time of year. We were led by Trust fungus expert Joe McSorley, whose knowledge and understanding of this little-known kingdom of living things is extraordinary. Just as well, because among the 30 or so species we found, observed and photographed were a few innocuous-looking “LBJs” (little brown jobs”), which are extremely poisonous. The diversity of colour, shape, size and texture of the fruiting bodies we found clearly reflects the enormous variety of fungi that exist. With names like yellow stag’s horn, snowy waxcap, turkey tail, glistening ink cap, fly agaric and the deceiver, as well as a host of scientific names, including Macrolepiota mastoidea, Clitocybe rivulosa (deadly poisonous LBJ) and Laccaria laccata, (all of which

We are greatly indebted to Joe for his time and expertise, and to Liz Wintle for organising the outing. l Coming up, the season continues apace with two talks in November. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Ken Plant Reader at St Mary’s Church, Saltford

“I

Most are quite sure that death is not the end for us (as part of the universe) and that when someone dies they do not cease to exist. This knowledge is shared by all cultures, not just ours.

n the beginning there was nothing which exploded.” Well, that’s what one of Terry Pratchett’s characters said in a Discworld novel. He was poking gentle fun at the ‘Big Bang’ theory about the beginnings of the universe. Someone responding to this on the internet points out that the theory never actually uses the word ‘explosion’. This might indicate a sense of humour failure or a desire to put people right and to confront ‘misunderstanding’, but it could also form the beginnings of an argument. Arguments are never very productive and seem only to increase misunderstandings. Many arguments seem to start about trivial points, or about different ways of interpreting the evidence and knowledge available at the

time. And thinking about evidence, the strictly ‘scientific’ mind-set will only accept evidence it can measure and record, while a less restricted attitude of mind points out that we can never hope to arrive at a full understanding and explanation of anything with only limited evidence. Quite recently, during a chance conversation in the street, a stranger told me about a haunting experience he had had. He was emphatic that he was not ‘cookie’ and didn’t believe in ghosts, but went on to say that although he couldn’t explain it, he knew what happened. What a profound statement that is! “I can’t explain it but I know what happened”. There are other examples of this kind of knowledge and knowing, without talking about ghosts or the paranormal.

In my work I am privileged to share funeral experiences with many people. Very few seem to think that the universe returns to ‘nothing’. Most are quite sure that death is not the end for us (as part of the universe) and that when someone dies they do not cease to exist. This knowledge is shared by all cultures, not just ours and has been so since prehistoric times. Few people explain how they know this and there are apparently endless ideas about what life beyond the grave might be like, but it does raise the question, “Where might this confidence, this knowledge come from?” There are certainly no meters or scales with which to measure it, but surely that’s not reasonable or rational enough grounds to ignore or reject it. Is it?

n FRY TENNIS CLUB

Generation game for tennis aces FRY Tennis Club members gathered at 1pm on Saturday October 5 for the start of our doubles tournament, and the weather was kind to us again this year. The threatened rain held off just long enough for us to complete the final at around 4.30 pm. The tournament is open to all members and this year was restricted to 12 players. The usual crop of end-of-league-season injuries limited the number of senior members available and we were lucky enough to be able to invite seven of our junior members to join those seniors who were able to play. The ages of the players ranged from 13 to their sixties, and the tournament’s format allowed us to pair seniors with juniors, ensuring some competitive and enjoyable tennis. With pairs comprising one senior and one junior, we were able to organise six rounds across four courts, with each match being played over four games and individuals retaining their own score. If the scores were

even, the matches were decided by a singlepoint game. Losing pairs moved courts and swapped sides, ensuring that all players mixed well. At the end of the six rounds, the scores were totted up and the top two players on each side of the draw played a full-set final. There were three senior players with the same score in second place on their side of the draw, and the finalist was decided by comparing the number of games conceded.

A record number of nominations – nearly 300 – were received for this year’s awards, which are held annually to mark Sirona’s foundation as a not-forprofit social enterprise. Many are received from the public, with Ruth Grindrod from Sirona’s Extra Care facility, St John’s Court in Bath, winning the “I think they deserve it” award. Sirona is committed to benefiting the community and Sue Bendall, administrator at Combe Lea Community Resource Centre in Midsomer Norton, scooped the Contribution to the Community award for the creation of a Scarecrow Festival, which attracted entries from people of all ages throughout the town. The night was sponsored by Cordell Health, Galtec, Node 4, Ralph Allen Press and the Sirona Foundation.

with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

F

ollowing a week of near constant rain, we awoke to glorious sunshine for our circular 4.5-mile round walk to Hanham and back. A total of 24 people set off from Keynsham Memorial park and following the river headed towards Hanham, where we had to move a number of horses from the area of the stile before we could get to the Lock and Weir for a refreshment break. We then headed up a steep set of uneven steps to the ring road. Keeping to the footpath on the ring road for about 150 metres, we then climbed over the crash barrier and descended down the slope back into woodlands on the other side of the river. We walked through the woodland with a river on our right and railway to our left towards Durley Lane. From there we walked behind the football and rugby ground back to the Memorial Park. The going was boggy and slippery in places but we got back without any mishaps.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Lost trade on lane to nowhere

A traditional-style basket Photo courtesy of Somerset Rural Life Museum

B

The barn by the River Chew where baskets were made

efore the twentieth century, small communities were self-sufficient in many of life’s essentials, but craftsmen used locally available materials to make specialist products where there was an opportunity to sell further afield. One such Somerset industry, which still survives on the Levels, is basket-making and in Victorian times this was practised in Keynsham. Willow is the traditional material for basketmaking in England and the basket willow osier, or withy, thrives in Somerset. Although associated with Sedgemoor, they were grown quite extensively around Keynsham. There were once withy beds along the south bank of the Avon, by the Chew in what is now the Park and by the Ell Brook at Ellsbridge – all locations that were suitably marshy. To obtain suitable “rods” for weaving requires careful cultivation and husbandry. The plants grow extremely quickly and in a single growing season, from late May to early October, a rod

can reach up to 8 feet (or 2.5m). New beds are planted in the spring using pieces of willow from the crop harvested during the preceding winter but will not be fully productive for three years. However, once established the plants can last up to 30 years. Basket-makers produced a wide variety of products; as well as workaday containers for transport and storage, they made cages, eeltraps and wicker furniture, which became very fashionable in Victorian times. In Keynsham, the basket-making was centred around the Dapps Hill to Steel Mills area. Steel Mills Lane used to be known as Cantle’s Lane, after basket-maker James Cantle, who used withies from his beds in Pope’s Paddock, between the Lane and the Chew. Next to what is now River View is a narrow track leading to the Chew. This was once the main road into Keynsham from the south, via a ford through the river. Cantle was employed by Thomas Chappell and the basket work was done

in a stone barn in his grounds close to the river at the end of the track. The last basket-maker may have been James Rogers, who from at least 1906 lived at Bethesda Cottages in Temple Street and worked at his craft until he died in 1922, aged 82. After basket-making ceased, the barn was used as a meeting place for the local Scout troop. n The society’s next meeting, on Monday November 18, features a talk on ‘Understanding Keynsham Abbey – why its Dedication Matters’, presented by architectural historian, author and television presenter Dr Jonathan Foyle. The meeting is at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, Keynsham and starts at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, provided space is available, with admission free if you join the society. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

T

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

he Queen’s Speech, outlining the Government’s forthcoming business and laws that it wants Parliament to approve, forms part of the State Opening of Parliament ceremony and the official beginning of the Parliamentary year. The ceremony has existed in its current form since 1852 but the tradition can be traced back to the 16th century. At the start of the procession, the Queen travels from Buckingham Palace to Westminster by carriage and is taken to the robing room to dress for her speech, which takes place in the House of Lords and is attended by Members of Parliament who have been summoned by Black Rod. The Imperial Crown, which symbolises the sovereignty of the monarch, was placed on a cushion this time and carried ahead of Her Majesty, who wore a diamond diadem which undoubtedly weighed far less. Last month’s Queen’s Speech, which is the first one to take place in two years, outlined the Prime Minister’s bold policies on health, crime, the environment and of course Brexit, which were among 26 bills read out. With the Brexit deadline looming it was vital that Boris Johnson focused on important policy areas like education, the NHS and care for the elderly, which will benefit from further investment. The Speech was followed by debates in the Commons. A week later, Members of Parliament convened for the first time on a Saturday since the Falklands Conflict in 1981. The only other occasions

have been the outbreak of World War II, the Suez Crisis and 30th July 1949, which was the last sitting of the summer. The Prime Minister assembled MPs in the Chamber to debate his new Brexit deal, which has been agreed to by the European Union (EU) after many hours of negotiations and an enormous amount of work undertaken by Ministers and civil servants. To fulfil the Benn Act, MPs needed to agree to this deal, vote for ‘no deal’ before Saturday October 19 or ask for an extension to Article 50. The motion tabled by former Conservative MP, Sir Oliver Letwin, which would withhold approval for the deal until legislation implementing it has been passed, gained a majority of 16, thus thwarting the remainder of the proceedings. The arrogance that has permeated Parliament will not be forgotten for many years. For Remainer MPs who have never accepted the referendum result, their campaign ceased to be about the national interest many months ago. It has now become a game of tit for tat being played by a small collective pushing its anti-democratic agenda, stymying our departure and Britain’s progress. Boris Johnson has done everything within his power to deliver Brexit on time and if he must call an election to implement a law passed by Parliament binding us to leave the EU, the electorate will respond by removing all those who have failed them.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Building a caring community is so vital

B

ristol University’s Cabot Institute for the Environment is at the forefront of improving the way we live in our world and enabling us to tackle the challenges facing our environment, writes Liz Barling. I went to the Cabot Institute’s annual lecture on whether we can thrive as an urban species. One speaker said our cities are running on fossilised sunshine and the more they expand, the more fossil fuels they use. This isn’t just down to the usual increase in petrol-fuelled vehicles. It’s in the cement needed to build all the new houses and the nitrogen fertiliser farmers use to feed our growing populations. He said that because we’re so reliant on

fossilised sunshine, technical fixes alone won’t be enough. We’re going to need “massive and radical social and political change.” Another speaker said we should build more “care-ful” communities in towns and cities - places where people and organisations work collaboratively to care for ourselves, our neighbours and our environment. Putting care at the heart of communities emphasises our connections and not our differences, something that struck me as an important message for our times. She said we should recognise what others do to care for our communities – and not just people, but places like allotments and skate parks. What can we learn about care from the

things that those places give us? She challenged us to respond to the radical changes going on in towns and cities (such as rising inequality) by embracing diversity, creativity and learning – including with people who are not like us, or with whom we might normally disagree. It’s in these (sometimes difficult) interactions that we can build the knowledge and emotional capacity to care for each other and our planet. Finally, she asked: what do you do to care for your community? I think we’re pretty good at being caring in Keynsham, but I’d like to throw the question out to you. The Guides talked about larger issues that affect them, including the lack of recycling facilities in their education establishments, and found many positive solutions to how they can eradicate plastic from their lives, such as using local refill shops, and using canvas shopping bags and refillable water bottles. HEALTH services in Bath & North East Somerset will be standardised when a planned merger with neighbouring counties takes places. Three groups responsible for the planning, buying and monitoring of health services will come together in April 2020 to form a single health organisation. The merger of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Groups has been approved following a consultation period. It means there will be a standardised level of care and best practice so everyone can access the same treatment and services, regardless of where they live.

Working as one Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will also help to meet financial challenges through greater buying power, streamlining governance processes and eliminating the duplication of administration functions. Tracey Cox, chief executive of the new B&NES, Swindon and Wiltshire CCG, said: “I believe that as a single CCG, we will be in a stronger position to improve outcomes for patients, whilst still retaining our local voice.” The new CCG will serve a combined population of more than 934,000 people. The merger is in line with similar mergers across the NHS.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Nine Perfect Strangers Liane Moriarty Liane Moriarty wrote Big Little Lies, which was made into a successful TV drama. This is her next book and follows in her usual style. You are introduced to nine people who appear to be successful in their fields – but are they? They each are suffering a burnout or crisis and book into a luxury spa in the middle of the Australian outback. Initially there are massages to attend, fasting to be done and general relaxing on the programme. However events soon take a more sinister turn. The story then turns out to be a dark thriller and the characters’ true personalities come out. This book was enjoyable and I particularly liked the successful author Frances, who felt that modern life was passing her by. As promised in last month’s review, the next two books in the Crazy Rich Asian series are reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant.

China Rich Girlfriend Kevin Kwan Even with all the efforts to eradicate Rachel Chu from Nick Young’s life, she is still by

his side in the second volume of the trilogy, back in Asia but this time in Hong Kong and Shanghai to enjoy holidays and meet some members of her family. She wasn’t expecting to meet Colette Bing, a famous fashion blogger and spoiled daughter of the fifth richest Chinese man, who is going to take them on a trip to Paris to do frantic crazy shopping. I particularly enjoyed the chapters about Kitty Pong and her educational mentor, who tries to teach her how to be accepted and become a member of the high society she dreams to be part of. It’s probably the book in the series where the least things happen, but it's still an escape from reality, a fun read for the holidays.

Rich People Problems Kevin Kwan This volume in the series is by far my favourite. Nick Young’s grandmother is on her death bed, and everyone wants their share of the cake. From around the world, close and not so close relatives rush to her bedside in the hope they will be chosen as the main heir in her will. Everyone tries their own trick to become the grandmother’s favourite. It is so cynical and funny. The book takes different turns and make us explore the past of Singapore under Japanese occupation. Sometimes it looks like a treasure hunt where the characters have to find clues to their own future.

The book could be a final one, but there are still possibilities for other stories with such a vast family and diverse characters.

continues the adventures of the unique Ted Spark. Ted is never very good with change, so he was very apprehensive about visiting his aunt Gloria and cousin Salim in New York. However Aunt Gloria works in the marvellous Guggenheim Museum, which Ted really enjoys visiting. Then a valuable painting is stolen from the museum and his aunt is arrested for the crime. There then follows a race against time by Ted, his sister Kat and Salim to find the culprit, locate the painting and save his aunt. Really well written.

Children's Fiction Last month saw the launch of a Young Crime Writers Crime competition in BANES libraries. This runs until February 2020, but for some inspiration why not try the following …

The Enemies of Jupiter Caroline Lawrence Caroline Lawrence writes some marvellous books set in ancient Rome. The historical detail is great and it always revolves around a group of children who have devious mysteries to solve. The main character is Flavia Gemina, and in this story she is joined by her friend Jonathan ben Mordecai, a doctor’s son, whose father has been sent to Rome to assist with plague victims. With the illness spreading throughout the city, the Emperor Titus has asked Flavia and her detective friends to seek out a mysterious enemy who is trying to destroy Rome. A brilliant, fast-paced detective story.

Partnership forged for rental homes

AEQUUS Developments Ltd (ADL) has signed a partnership deal with Gregory’s estate agents to bring rental homes to market in Bath city centre. The two-year deal, signed by Aequus’s chairman Charles Gerrish and Gregory’s founder Matt Gregory, will see Gregory’s take over the tenancy management of 33 homes. Gregory’s will also support Aequus with future properties that will be refurbished and marketed for rent over the next few years. These homes will be available to rent through Gregory’s estate agents and include one and two-bedroom apartments in some of the city’s historic Georgian buildings. Aequus Developments Ltd was established by Bath & North East Somerset Council in 2016 to develop, deliver, own and manage the local authority’s private residential property. been selected by ADL to work alongside them in this exciting project, bringing quality properties to the Bath & North East Somerset rental market and allowing tenants the opportunity to live in such wonderful surroundings”. Aequus is also building new homes for sale and rent, with more than 100 homes in the pipeline at two schemes at Riverside View in Keynsham and Sladebrook Road in Bath. Aequus was recently shortlisted for the developer of the year in the Bath Property Awards for its Riverside View development. Charles Gerrish added: “Aequus seeks to address the need for reasonably priced new homes in the area by bringing forward development on brown-field sites and refurbishing city centre properties. Recognising Bath & North East Somerset Council’s adoption of the climate emergency policy earlier this year, we are proud that we can achieve a high level of sustainability while ensuring prices remain competitive for the local market. “As a new company, it is great that our approach is being recognised and I am pleased that Aequus has been shortlisted in three categories of the Bath Property Awards”.

n BOWLING Keynsham Bowling Club THE combination of plenty of rain plus some sunshine has made the playing surface of the bowling green in the park look the best it’s been for a number of months. What a pity it is closed season! Club captain Carm Riccio has been reviewing the events of the men in the last six months. They did very well in reaching the quarter finals of the Turnbull Cup and also getting into the third round of the National Two Rink competition. We were particularly proud that our men’s club champion, Paul Harsant, narrowly lost in the semi-final of the Somerset Champion of Champions competition. In the September edition of the Voice, we included reports from the various team captains. One that was overlooked was that of the Friday Triples League, where we finished top with the highest total of aggregate scores since the inauguration of the league. As the league fixtures finish, some of the men depart for their annual tour, and this year 24 of them were based in a hotel in Worcester and played matches against local sides. As one season finishes, the planning for the next one is under way as match secretary Tony Hunter starts to compile the fixture list for 2020. Our lady captain was delighted to report that the ladies won the North Somerset league for the second consecutive year and came second in the Mendip league, this being a big improvement on the previous season, when they finished bottom.

Frys Bowling Club FRYS closed their 2019 season with a presentation dinner, where trophies were handed out to the winners of the club’s competitions. In the Triples, runners-up Mike Barling, Pete Rumble and Roger Loader just missed out in one of the closest competitions ever, with Malcolm Hanks, Terry Vickery and Christopher Day taking the title and Terry securing his fifth triples title. The Pairs saw a dominant performance as runners-up Ken Stewart and Roger Loader fell a long way behind in the first half of the game, with Steve Buck and Jonathan Day taking an easy win, picking up a maximum 8 shots in the

process. The Two Wood final has been delayed due to the green being closed early. In the Novice, Mike Cox played Pete Rumble, with Mike Cox taking his first title. The Handicap was won by Roger Loader, 20 years after his first title, with Jonathan Day taking the runners-up spot. The Championship final was a tight game, with Geoff Kershaw taking the title and Stephen Day getting the runners-up trophy. n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

Determined Ks continue positive start IT looks good for Keynsham RFC if you don't look too closely at the league table for South West 1 played six, won five, lost one - but it should be noted that they have played only one away game. There are three games to report on since the October issue. There should have been four, but St Ives RFC have withdrawn from the league competition. Their first away game of the season was at North Petherton RFC. The first half was played at speed but with little accuracy from either side, with knockons, fumbles and 'hail Mary’ passes in abundance. But North Petherton were the quicker to the breakdowns, and Keynsham were turned over or driven off the ball too many times, with their defence stretched almost to breaking point. The Black and Ambers scored within four minutes when Jack Weston broke from a five-metre scrum and quick hands saw Adam Teasdale run a nice line from off blind-side wing to touch down near the post, Sam Challenger converting. But then the home side scored two tries, converting one to lead 12-7. Sam Challenger kicked a penalty to close the gap, but the home side’s winger touched down for the third try, which was converted. A dominant home scrum forced Keynsham to yield a yellow card and a penalty try, giving North Petherton a try bonus point. There was then a yellow for the home prop to even the numbers, and a breakaway from a line-out maul by Josh Woodman allowed Pearce to scuttle across the line and to the

and George Warren weaved over to allow Challenger to add the conversion. The half-time score was 27-10. With two minutes of the second half, Keynsham had another try under their belts. A chip through by Ollie Coneybeare, a tap from the boot of Pearce stopping the ball going into touch, and Coneybeare beat the defence to score. The visitors’ immediate response saw them score in the right-hand corner, with a fine conversion. Weston found himself alone charging through but was hauled down; from the subsequent scrum Sidmouth were penalised and Challenger added three more point. Sidmouth then scored two tries, the first far out on the right and the second (and their bonus point), a slick try by the winger, one of which was converted. Between these two tries, Challenger notched another penalty for the home side. Ten minutes to go and the score was 38-29, but that soon became 38-32, with the second of two penalty shots by their kicker. There was a huge sigh of relief when Josh Woodman scuttled away from a maul with the ball tucked firmly under his oxter. He was tackled, fed the ball back and Pearce banged it into touch to save the win and five league points. Following the cancellation of the St Ives fixture, Bridgwater and Albion RFC were the next visitors to the Crown Fields and another cracking game ensued. The home side drew first blood when Ryan Harding touched down for a try, converted by Challenger. On 21 minutes Bridgy had a line-out on the

home 22. A good catch and drive followed and when this slowed down, their centre ran a great line to score under the posts; the conversion levelled the scores. From 28 minutes on, it was all Bridgwater & Albion. Constant pressure in the ‘red zone’ and repeated penalties resulted in a yellow card for skipper Hayden Johnson. More pressure followed, and a final warning from the referee, but the defence held firm. Against the run of play Keynsham then scored a try. There was a penalty to clear the lines, then a kick through was well followed up by Joe Clements, nailing a Bridgwater defender short of the line. K’s players were quicker to the site of the action and Carr touched down. Challenger’s conversion made it 14-7 at half time. The visitors started brightly in the second half, but the Black and Ambers held firm and were soon back to 15 players. A powerful driving maul made 30-odd metres, a kick and chase brought play to five metres out and Weston scored from the base of an advancing scrum. Challenger’s conversion was wide so the score was 19-7 with a bonus try looming A further massive driving maul yielded a penalty, converted by Challenger. The visitors tried their darnedest but the locals boys’ defence stayed strong, and a break by Warren, who almost made it to the try line, was the only clear-cut chance Keynsham had for a bonus try thereafter. n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Battling Town's mixed fortunes ON the back of a well-earned draw against league leaders Plymouth Parkway, Keynsham faced visitors Tavistock with increasing optimism. However, their optimism was not well placed as Ks went down to their biggest defeat since returning to the Premier Division of the Toolstation League. A seemingly very young Devon side were well-deserved winners by 5-2 as they outpaced their opponents with good passing and converted their chances well. It was a salutary lesson but one which was quickly learned as they travelled to Clevedon in the Somerset Premier Cup. A battling performance saw Keynsham come from behind twice with goals from Craig Wilson and Adey Harvey and then take a 3-2 lead six minutes from time, thanks to Sam Downes’ overhead kick, only to concede a late equaliser. The game went to penalties, which Keynsham won 5-4 to set up a home tie against Bridgwater Town in the next round. Another battling display was watched by a home crowd of 163 at the AJN Stadium against Exmouth Town, who had won six of

their seven league matches since returning to the Western League. The visitors started the brighter, having three shots cleared off the line and another hitting the post in the first half. However, it was Keynsham who took a first-half lead when a long ball from Craig Wilson beat the entire Exmouth defence and found an advancing Ben Harris, who beat the custodian Chris Wright to the ball and slotted it home. Despite intense pressure from Exmouth, the Ks held out for a well-earned victory. Another victory, 2-0 over Chipping Sodbury three days later, took Keynsham up to 13th in the table with several games in
