Extra 1,100 homes earmarked for Keynsham – have your say Residents are once again being asked for their views on how the communities of Keynsham, Saltford and surrounding areas can help meet a housing shortfall of thousands of new homes across the West of England region. A plan by the four councils that make up the area – Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset – is about to be made public, with up to 1,100 new homes for Keynsham and a new Saltford bypass among the proposals. The document – the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) – maps out where the extra 39,000 homes it is calculated the region will need by 2036 should go, as well as transport improvements and new employment. This is on top of the 66,000 homes the four authorities have already allowed for in their core strategies, around 450 of which are to be built on land around Keynsham. Residents are now being urged to take their chance to have their say on the proposals, which will “help shape the future of our Turn to Page 2

Have your say on plan to expand town by 2036 From Page 1 area for the next 20 years”, says Keynsham councillor Charles Gerrish. A public consultation is due to start on November 7 and will run until December 19 at www. jointplanningwofe.org.uk Development on land to the north and east Keynsham would “need to respect the separate integrity of Keynsham and Saltford”, the draft JSP says. Cllr Gerrish has explained in a letter to Keynshamvoice this would be on land to the north of the railway line. The document also says development would be “dependent on the timely provision of significant new

transport measures to enable new growth and to mitigate existing congestion”. At the same time, the four councils have been drawing up a Joint Transport Strategy, which features a number of proposals for the Bristol to Bath corridor along the A4, including a potential tram service, improved links between the A4 and A37 roads, a Callington Road link in nearby Brislington and – controversially – a Saltford bypass travelling from the A4 around the south of the village. The bypass plan promises to split opinion in the village with some undoubtedly backing measures to divert traffic from the centre of the village, while

The one-way traffic trial in the High Street is due to begin in April

No bus contraflow for one-way High Street The final designs to test a oneway traffic system on Keynsham High Street haven’t yet been approved – but the scheme will definitely not include a twoway bus route, the council has confirmed. Planners are still looking at a number of options for the £200,000 trial, which is set to be introduced in spring 2017. Local councillors are working with the team to finalise the design this month ahead of consultation with the public, then work will get under way before the trial begins in April. Councillor Anthony Clarke, cabinet member for transport, said: “The aim is to make the

High Street more attractive, support local businesses, improve the pedestrian environment and improve traffic flow into the town centre. We are committed to ensuring local members have the final say and choose the design that is best for the local community. I can reassure people that a bus contraflow is not on the table.” Monitoring of traffic flow, safety, air quality and surveys of those using the High Street will be carried out to assess the impact of the one-way system, with council officers saying they expect it will lead to people staying in the area longer and spending more in the shops.

n NEWS others, including members of Saltford Environment Group, say it would result in the loss of green belt land and existing footpaths, harm wildlife and run the risk of seeing housing development spread out to the edge of the new road. As part of the councils’ work on the JSP, other potential development sites around Keynsham and Saltford have been rejected because of the “negative impact” they would have, while land at Hicks Gate was also ruled out because it “lies in a very sensitive part of the Bristol and Bath green belt which makes a major contribution to preventing the merger of Bristol and Keynsham”. To meet the housing shortfall, the JSP says Bristol will accommodate up to 12,000 new homes and Bath 300 as part of urban development, while 3,500 homes could be earmarked for land to the south and east of Whitchurch village – with many other sites across the four councils areas also taking a share. Announcing the start of

consultation this month, the leaders of North Somerset Council, Nigel Ashton, South Gloucestershire Council, Matthew Riddle, Bath and North East Somerset Council, Tim Warren and the Mayor of Bristol City Council, Marvin Rees, said: “The challenge we face as a region that is continuing to grow, is to continue to develop our economic prosperity in a way that benefits all our communities and protects the planet. “We’re responding to the needs of our growing population; increasing demands for homes and jobs, and seeking to address the issue of affordability for people on lower salaries wanting to buy or rent their own home. There is a significant gap between the cost of houses and the level of income and whilst we cannot narrow the gap alone, we want to give more people the opportunity to get onto the housing ladder. “Our intention is to have a joined-up approach to providing the homes that people need and the supporting infrastructure,

whilst retaining the individuality of each community. This is an opportunity to ensure that the housing is matched by the necessary support and facilities. This could mean new roads, public transport, schools, and health facilities to meet local needs. “No decisions have been made at this stage, but we are in agreement that affordable housing is a high priority that will mean the next generation can live and work in the West of England and benefit from growing business and employment opportunities. We’re also committed to prioritising development on brownfield sites to rejuvenate existing derelict land. “The solutions to these challenges will affect each of our council areas, which is why we are taking this joint approach and why we will consult extensively with all the communities and stakeholders across the West of England from the start of November.” See Letters on Page 26

Police inquiry office leaves town centre Keynsham’s police inquiry office is relocating to Keynsham Police Centre in Ashmead Road. The move from the town’s One Stop Shop follows consultation with local councillors after officers found more members of the public were visiting the police centre than their base at the Civic Centre. The inquiry office is expected to make the move at the end of November and will have the same opening hours as at the One Stop Shop – 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. A spokesperson said the Keynsham neighbourhood policing team will continue to be based in the Civic Centre. Members of the policing team will be joining councillors and representatives of other local services at the next Keynsham Area Forum meeting on Tuesday, November 22, from 6pm at The Space, Market Walk.

Fears for village library service’s future New opening hours at local libraries have come into effect this month – despite opposition in Saltford and fears the village’s service is under threat. Changes to opening and closing times at both Keynsham and Saltford’s libraries have been introduced by Bath and North East Somerset Council, which says it has adjusted timetables to take into account that there are fewer visitors earlier in the day and later in the evening. It will also make opening hours “more consistent” across the district’s libraries, it said. In Saltford, the village’s library opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a team of volunteers have been running the service on Saturday mornings since December 2015 after stepping in to prevent closure at weekends. Instead of opening at 9.30am on Thursdays and Saturdays, from October 31 the library will be opening its doors at 10am.

Fears have been raised by local Liberal Democrat representatives, however, that the village library could be lost altogether following a meeting of the Keynsham Area Forum, where the possibility of closure was raised, Liberal Democrat spokesperson Duncan Hounsell said. A presentation on the future of local libraries by Ian Savigar, the council’s customer services, revenues and benefits divisional director, outlined the financial pressures on the authority and the priority to “drive down costs, and to improve efficiency”, while “greater community involvement” would help to continue to provide the service. Mr Hounsell said “It is outrageous that this valued village asset is under threat. It is a community hub as well as a library. Volunteers have already restored the Saturday morning library session which had been

cut. They should not be asked to do more.” Parish councillors have also officially registered their opposition to library cuts, saying: “Saltford Parish Council recognises the role of the library within the community. We are very aware of budgetary constraints on the library service across B&NES but would not support any reduction in service that the library offers at this present time.” In Keynsham meanwhile, where the library opens from Monday to Saturday, doors will close an hour earlier on Tuesdays at 5pm, half an hour later on Fridays at 5pm, while opening time has been pushed back by half an hour on Saturdays to 9.30am. Explaining the new timetables, Councillor Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), cabinet member for community services, said: “This is about ensuring services at all our libraries are maintained, sustain-

able and can be delivered within our current staff resource. The council has to achieve significant financial savings over the next three years. However – unlike some councils across the country – we are committed to retaining a library service.” New library timetables Saltford Monday – CLOSED Tuesday – 10am-1pm and 2-5pm Wednesday – CLOSED Thursday – 10am-1pm and 2-5pm Friday – CLOSED Saturday – 10am-1pm Sunday – CLOSED Keynsham Monday – 8.30am-5pm Tuesday – 8.30am-5pm Wednesday – 9.30am-5pm Thursday – 8.30am-5pm Friday – 8.30am-5pm Saturday – 9.30am-4.30pm Sunday – CLOSED

Wildlife park competes with the best to become one of top three large attractions

A popular Keynsham farm park has been named one of the region’s top three large attractions at an award ceremony. The Douglas family’s Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park scooped bronze in the Large Attraction of the Year category at the 2016/17 Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards. Avon Valley made it to the shortlist after three stages of judging, including looking at the attractions’ websites, online reviews, and social media and making “mystery visitor” inspections before a judging panel chose the finalists. At the awards ceremony at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House last month, the Keynsham attraction was up against The Roman Baths and the National Trust’s Tyntesfield, which eventually took gold and silver respectively.

From left, Avon Valley’s Hayley Fey, John Douglas, Emily Brown, Doug Douglas, Hannah Douglas and Kim Pounsberry celebrate the award Doug Douglas said: “I’m so incredibly proud of my team, to win the Large Attraction award alongside such wellknown attractions such as Tyntesfield, National Trust and

The Roman Baths is a massive achievement for our family-run business. “I hope those who visit the park enjoy making as many memories here as I had as a

child, and my daughter is making now.” Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park was launched by John Douglas in 1989 to provide access to wildlife and nature to people living in Bristol, Bath and surrounding areas at its 90-acre site. Son Doug took over management of the park in 2014, its 25th year, and has introduced new attractions, including an animalhandling and interaction barn, new play equipment and activity equipment and seasonal events such as FEAR at Avon Valley for Halloween and the Christmas Experience. Presenting the award, judges said Avon Valley was a “great attraction with exceptional customer service” and the park will now be entered in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in February 2017 along with the other winners.

Should I get my rabbit a friend? While rabbits do enjoy human company, it is always best to keep rabbits in pairs. In the wild, rabbits are highly sociable animals and prefer to live in big groups. To stop your bunny becoming depressed and lonely, they need a partner who understands them and speaks their own language. If you already have an adult rabbit and are thinking about getting them a friend, speak to one of our vets or nurses for tips on introducing them to each other. The best pairings are usually a neutered male and spayed female as they are the most likely to get along. It is possible to have two rabbits of the same sex, however these should ideally be paired together from birth. Both rabbits should still be neutered at the earliest possible age in order to discourage dominance and aggression. Contrary to popular belief, guinea pigs do not make good friends. Although they may tolerate each other, it will actually be very difficult trying to cater for two different species in terms of diet and husbandry. Rabbits will be more inclined to play, groom

and eat together if they are with their own kind, and it will make for a much more relaxed living environment. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to accommodate two bunnies, try to keep your single rabbit indoors as much as possible. That way they will still be able to receive enough interaction and company to keep them happy. Nobody wants to live alone all the time, after all! Of course, don’t forget to make sure they get some exercise outdoors still; rabbits need access to UV light to keep them healthy. Call Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 for further advice or to book an appointment for your new bunny.

It’s the icing on the cake for development Plenty of sweet treats have come out of the former chocolate factory at Somerdale, but a request to recreate the iconic building itself in cake proved quite a challenge for a local baker. Sophie Ball, who runs a cakemaking business from her home in Hanham, was asked to bake a cake to celebrate the opening of The Chocolate Quarter’s new show home and marketing suite last month. It had to be big enough to provide around 200 slices at St Monica Trust’s opening presentations and Sophie’s recipe called for 63 eggs, 10.5kg of sugar, 6kg of flour, 5kg of chocolate and 3.5kg of butter and took 30 hours to decorate. Sophie said: “It was definitely the most difficult cake I’ve ever made. The detailing on the three buildings was the hardest bit to do, especially trying to fit all the windows in. “It had to be large enough for 200 servings, so the sheer size of

Celebrating the launch of the Chocolate Quarter’s new show home with a cake in the shape of the former factory buildings the cake was also very challenging – particularly getting it out of the car and into the Somerdale Pavilion in one piece.” More than 250 people attended the show home launch and 30 per cent of the apartments in the retirement community have already been reserved off-plan. A sales team will now be based at the show home as work

continues, until the development opens in summer next year. The Chocolate Quarter will in-

clude 136 retirement apartments, a 93-bed care home, office space, retail units and leisure facilities, including a 50-seat cinema, swimming pool, dance studio and pizza restaurant. The show home and marketing suite is open on weekdays from 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays by appointment only from 11am to 2pm.

Tim’s 2,900-mile triathlon challenge to help youngsters affected by Chernobyl

A Keynsham man is nearing the end of a year of triathlon challenges that will see him cover 2,920 miles – the distance between Bristol and Belarussian town Osipovichi. Tim Tynan now has less than 600 miles to go after completing a range of races, from 10k runs to full marathons, with cycling and swimming sessions too. It is 30 years since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and Tim is raising money in support of the Bristol Link of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, which every year pays for up to 18 children from Osipovichi to visit the Bristol area for a summer break. The children’s community is still living with the effects of the disaster and the four-week stay allows them to enjoy fresh air, uncontaminated food, health checks and a lot of fun. Members of Tim’s own family have hosted children in their homes during their visits to the UK and seeing the benefits it brings inspired him to pull on his running shoes. He said: “I thought it would be a great way to contribute and make 2016 a memorable year. “Some days it feels great and others are rough, the injuries are mounting up! Whilst it's a fairly modest challenge compared to some, the real challenge has been to keep going and find the time around work and family life.” As well as the distance

Tim Tynan, right, and above with some of the youngsters from Belarus and their leaders who visited Bristol this summer challenge, which he says is well on target, Tim is also planning to climb the height of the elevation between Keynsham and Minsk in Belarus with a competitive climbing event before the end of the year. He said: “The winter race schedule and training will be largely based around the Bath Skyline race series, which are always fun and muddy, so will be a nice way to finish off the running shoes that have survived the year. I will attempt to time the finish so the last few miles

are done on a Christmas Day Parkrun.” Tim has already raised hundreds of pounds towards next year’s visit and people can sponsor him at www.justgiving. com/fundraising/Tim-Tynan The Bristol Link is part of a national charity founded in 1992, which has 60 “links” across the UK made up of supporters who fundraise and host nearly 1,000 children from Belarus and the Ukraine each year. Film screening revisits battlefields of the Somme one century after deadly conflict

A film made on the frontline that was watched by nearly half the population of Britain as the Battle of the Somme raged across the Channel a century ago will be shown in Keynsham this month. Keynsham Film Works is hosting a special screening of the 1916 film The Battle of the Somme (PG) to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and the bloodiest of battles, which drew to a close in November 1916 with more than one million casualties on both sides. The film, produced by the War Office, features real footage from the war as well as reconstructed scenes shot at the time and was watched by around 20 million people when it was released, many hoping to spot a loved one on screen. The screening in Keynsham is

one of a series being held across Bath and North East Somerset this month in a partnership between the Imperial War Museum and the council. Councillor Patrick AnketellJones, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for economic development, said: “The Battle of the Somme was shown to packed audiences in cinemas,

and it’s hard to imagine what it must have been like to watch in 1916. In Bath, it was shown at the Vaudeville Picture Theatre (opposite Komedia in Westgate Street) and the Picturedrome (long since demolished in Southgate Street), with tickets priced at 1s (5p), 7d (3p) and 4d (2p).” Keynsham Film Works will host the screening at The Space on Thursday, November 24, at 7.45pm. Tickets, at £3, are available on the door and there will be a short introduction and free film notes. The film, originally silent, will be accompanied by music composed by Laura Rossi. Other screenings will take place at Victoria Hall in Radstock on November 13, at The Little Theatre Cinema in Bath on November 14 and at Midsomer

Lighting up winter with dazzling event

The annual Keynsham Winter Festival promises to provide a dazzling start to the festive season with a Festival of Light theme. The town centre will be twinkling and sparkling on Friday, November 25, as the community gathers to see the Christmas lights illuminated and to enjoy a range of activities. As ever, the procession will start the fun – this year setting off from outside St John’s Church, where the bells will ring to mark the start, and making its way to Temple Street to the outdoor stage. There will be music from local choirs, Keynsham Brass Band and the 2386 Squadron Band from the stage, while St John’s Church, Victoria Methodist Church and The Space also host live performances, from hand bells to Hansel and Gretel, and Punch and Judy will pop into Keynsham Library. There will be plenty of

Switching on the Christmas lights at last year’s Peter Pan-themed Winter Festival festive goodies to buy from stalls on Temple Street, the High Street and Market Walk as well as at a craft fair in the Fear Hall. Visitors can also get creative themselves with crafts at St John’s Church and the Key Centre. To get people in the festive spirit Victoria Methodist Church is hosting a Christmas tree display inspired by the 12 Days of Christmas while the façade of Halifax in the High Street will be the backdrop for a light show. A spokesperson for Keynsham

Town Council, which organises the event, said: “Around town there will be street entertainers, festive food, competitions and activities in various locations. The fun fair will once again be scaled down and shops and local businesses are being encouraged to stay open and join in the fun. “Look out for our posters and adverts giving details of pre- and on-the-night activities such as our annual children’s colouring competition and the businesses’ and traders’ window competition. “The Keynsham Winter

Festival Planning Committee is working towards making this an exciting community event that can be enjoyed by all members of the family.” Street closures, from 3.30pm to 10pm on the night, include part of Charlton Road from the Tesco mini roundabout to the High Street, the whole of the High Street and part of Temple Street from Iceland to Carpenters Lane. Diversion routes will be in operation. A free park and ride service, by Keynsham and District Dial-a-Ride, will run from Waitrose car park, where there is free parking and people can board the shuttle bus to Ashton Way in the town centre. Community votes help pupils enjoy the great outdoors Pupils at a Saltford school are now learning about the natural world in the best possible place – outside. Saltford C of E Primary School received a £25,000 Community Award from financial mutual OneFamily’s charitable foundation and has created an outdoor classroom with the cash. The school was nominated for the award by school governor and OneFamily customer Megan Jackson and was then put on a shortlist, with the public asked to vote for their favourite project. With families and the community getting behind the bid, the school received the most votes and was named the winner. Samantha Honeybell, Early Years Leader and teacher at Saltford C of E Primary School, said: “Outdoor learning is extremely beneficial for young children as it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle and helps them to understand the natural world. “The new outdoor area will have an impact on our pupils for many years to come, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone in the local community who voted

for us and made the project possible.” The school unveiled the new outdoor classroom last month and former pupil Georgina Smith, who is now managing director at OneFamily Lifetime Mortgages, joined the celebration. Georgina said: “It’s great to come back to my old school and celebrate with the staff and pupils. Enjoying the great outdoors is a huge part of children’s lives, and the new outdoor play area will provide the children at Saltford C of E Primary School with a fantastic learning experience. “Our Community Awards are designed to benefit causes close to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.” OneFamily aims to make £5 million available to its customers through its foundation to help improve their lives or to make a positive difference to their local communities. Members of Keynsham Childminding group and their minded children held a sponsored scavenger hunt in Keynsham Memorial Park on October 13. The children explored the park, collecting various autumnthemed items from their lists, which they then used to make autumn crowns. Around £350 was raised for the group, which provides training, support and resources for childminders in and around Keynsham. Anyone looking for childcare can contact the group at keynshamchildmindinggroup@gmail.com or find them on Facebook.

Pupils across Keynsham and Saltford have been celebrating National School Meals Week. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s school meals service marked the week – which runs from October 31 to November 4 – by launching a new menu. Some schools also held a Mexican-themed day, serving up tacos, fajitas and burritos. The school meals service recently achieved the Silver Food for Life Catering Mark and has been encouraging more families to take up school dinners during the week. Councillor Martin Veal, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “This is about celebrating the quality of meals on offer in our schools and thanking all the staff for all the hard work they put in.” Any local food suppliers who would like to get involved in supplying produce to schools can call Linda McCalister on 01225 477273 or find out more at www. bathnes.gov.uk/foodcontract

Scouts have 18,000 reasons to thank community in £25,000 floor appeal It’s been a month of celebrations for 1st Keynsham Scouts as they now have £18,000 to put towards a new floor at their HQ and are the proud winners of the Youth Class Cup in the South West in Bloom Awards after their hard work in brightening up the town. Hats off to the community in which we live, the support experienced by 1st Keynsham Scouts over recent months has been fantastic and we have now raised £18,000 towards the £25,000 needed to replace the floor at Scout headquarters in Ashton Way. Since launching the floor fund – Under the Feet of Giants – back in April people have rallied to the cause, old members remembering their young days, young members looking to the future, even people who have never been involved with Scouting – the list has grown and grown. We have been blown away by the response and thank all of those who have looked to help us in our quest for a new floor at the HQ. Scouting in Keynsham is now stronger than it has ever been and we hope that also reflects our community. We still have a little way to go if our target is to be achieved but this is a tremendous result so far.

Camping that would make Bear proud In recent weeks, more than 40 Keynsham Scouts would have made Bear Grylls proud. With nights drawing in and temperatures dropping the temptation is to pull the curtains and stay inside, but Scouts from both Axe Troop and Chew Troop have done the opposite. Cooking over wood fires, building and sleeping in shelters in the woods even creating a mud oven – what fab pizzas they made! They are now determined to prove in the coming months that Scouting really is all year round and they have the skills to survive. Bear would be impressed.

Success at South West in Bloom

1st Keynsham Scouts have won the Youth Class Cup at the recent South West in Bloom Awards held in Taunton. Many would have seen the flowers in Ashton Way car park, planted and cared for by members of 1st Keynsham Scout group. These were just one of several ongoing projects the group has been cultivating as part of Keynsham in Bloom. We are delighted with the award, it recognises what our young people have been doing, and gives impetus for even more small projects in the future. If anybody would like to help with 2017 projects, please email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or ring 07714 237525.

Former head teacher John meets the sixth-former who helped save his life Former Wellsway School headteacher John Smith owes his life to one of his ex-pupils and one of the school’s current sixthformers. Mr Smith, 74, had a cardiac arrest while swimming at Keynsham Leisure Centre in July, but thanks to the swift actions of Paul Denner and Chris Whittaker and their colleagues he has made an excellent recovery. “I am so grateful to everyone who helped us so magnificently,” said Mr Smith, from Saltford. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here.” The drama happened one morning when Mr Smith was having his regular swim, something he had done almost every day since he recovered from bypass surgery 22 years ago following heart failure. Chris, 18, was on an early shift as a lifeguard when he noticed that Mr Smith, who was swimming towards the deep end, was sinking. He pressed the alarm, dived in and, with the help of other swimmers and his colleague Becky Dando, who had called the emergency services, pulled Mr Smith to the side. General manager Steve Williams and duty manager Paul, who recognised Mr Smith because he had taught him at Wellsway, began CPR and then used the centre’s defibrillator. “He wasn’t breathing,” said Chris. “It took three shocks to get a heartbeat. By that time the

Student and lifeguard Chris Whittaker with former Wellsway head teacher John Smith, who had a cardiac arrest while swimming paramedics had arrived. They were here within three minutes.” Mr Smith was taken by ambulance to The Hawthorns in Keynsham, where he was transferred to the air ambulance then flown to the Bristol Royal Infirmary. After treatment in intensive care, the cardiac unit and a cardiology ward, during which a stent and a

cardiac resuscitation device were fitted, he was allowed home. Chris, who is studying for A levels in PE, psychology, business and maths at Wellsway and aims to go to university to read sports management, swam for Keynsham Swimming Club when he was younger and has had a weekend and holiday job at the

leisure centre for two years. He lives with his parents Teresa and David in Saltford, coincidentally around the corner from Mr Smith and his wife Diana. “I had seen him swimming but I did not know who he was,” said Chris. “It is weird seeing how healthy he looks again now. “You do all the lifesaving training but you never expect that you will have to do it for real. I wouldn’t want to do it again!” Nevertheless, it paid off – the air ambulance team commended the leisure centre staff for the exemplary way they dealt with the emergency. Mr Smith is also full of praise: “I feel I have been extremely fortunate. Everybody who cared for me has been absolutely brilliant. If they had not acted so quickly, I might have had brain damage.” Mr Smith, an English teacher who returned to Wellsway to teach theatre studies part time after his heart failure in 1994, had the chance to thank Chris in person at the launch of Wellsway’s 60th anniversary celebrations earlier in the autumn. It was also a chance for him to be reunited with some of the school’s other ex-headteachers and some former colleagues. Wellsway 60 organiser Louise Riddoch said: “It is always a pleasure to welcome John back to the school and it was lovely for him to be able to meet Chris. We are all very proud of Chris for what he did.”

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

The River Chew is in good health – now it’s time to turn attention to our oceans The first Sunday in October saw 16 enthusiastic people of all ages splashing about in the river Chew, writes Avon Wildlife Trust chairman Dave Sage. Fun though it was, it had a serious side because it was the annual pollution survey of the river at Dapp's Hill bridge in Keynsham. Members from the local community and beyond had to carry out kick sampling – one person kicking the stones on the river bed while their partner held a net downstream to catch the animals hiding under the stones. This is a standard Environment Agency technique, although success does depend on how hard you kick! Some of the younger members didn't catch much apart from two wellies full of river water! Nevertheless, some fish were caught (minnows, an eel, a stone loach and some bullheads) plus a good variety of invertebrates, including stonefly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, caddis fly larvae and freshwater shrimps, all of which suggest a low level of pollution in the river. Needless to say, all animals were carefully returned to complete their life cycles in this most fascinating of ecosystems. With thanks to all those parents who helped out. “Our Seas, Our Future!” The plight of our wildlife is often in the news. Who can fail to have heard that elephants, rhinos, pandas and the like are threatened through a wide variety of causes, mostly the actions of humans. But the state of the oceans around the world are also threatened. We are not so aware of this or why it is so important to us. The oceans cover 71 per cent of our planet, are home to millions of species, and sustain all life on earth, providing half of the oxygen we breathe. But overfishing, climate change and pollution are destroying this precious resource. This November’s meeting of the Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust, “Our Seas, Our Future”, will explore our seas in a fun way, but also examine how we can help protect this vital part of our world.

Our watery habitats support otters The speaker, Alisdair Naulls, is engagement officer for the Marine Conservation Society, which works to secure a future for our living seas around the UK and abroad. The society’s vision is to achieve seas fit for life – with clean seas and

beaches that support abundant marine life and healthy fish stocks, providing enjoyment for all. Some of the Marine Conservation Society’s many projects include campaigns to clean up beaches, stop the

use of micro-beads (found in many toiletry products) that threaten marine wildlife, and raise awareness of what fish we should be eating to achieve a sustainable future. We may not have our own piece of coastline but we do have responsibilities. Come and find out more at our meeting. We are supported by Keynsham Wombles and City to Sea “Refill Bristol” – both organisations promote ways to keep our rivers and seas free from pollution. There is also the opportunity to purchase Christmas goodies, bird food and Wildlife Trust items. The meeting, suitable for all ages and open to all, will be held at Wellsway School, Keynsham on Friday, November 11, hosted by the Green Team at the school. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Adults £2.50, under-16s £1 – no advance booking necessary. For further information, contact Kathy Farrell on 07850 508702.

ON THE BEAT

‘ with PC James Evans Month by month we get given different tasks to look at, from antisocial behaviour to fly-tipping, depending what is trending in the reported crime. This month the focus has moved back to parking issues in and around Keynsham. This generally comes to light when the football and rugby seasons kick off in September. One of the regular complaints we receive is the parking of vehicles on Durley Hill, which is the hill leading from Keynsham Football Club up towards the Hicks Gate roundabout. The council has set out double yellow lines on one side of the road to prevent the parking on both sides of the carriageway,

The message is quite simple – no matter where you park, pavements are for pedestrians, and the road is for vehicles... It is not acceptable for pedestrians to have to walk in the road because the footpath has been blocked by illegal parking

which would hinder road users. The issue for us comes when vehicles park on the other side of the road, having mounted the pavement to do so. The message is quite simple – no matter where you park, pavements are for pedestrians, and the road is for vehicles. We will be issuing warning notices in the coming month but by the time this goes to print we will be issuing fixed penalty notices for the offence of parking on the pavement. It is not acceptable for pedestrians to have to walk in the road because the footpath has been blocked by illegal parking.

Again this month we have successfully completed a misuse of drugs act warrant where an amount of class B drug was recovered and investigations are ongoing into other items that were found. The latest antisocial behaviour issues that we have are involving the parks in Keynsham. The Memorial Park is still being visited by moped riders and this lends itself to antisocial behaviour. If you are taking a motorbike into a public park then we have the powers to seize that vehicle and store it for up to 14 days at your expense. We have also been suffering with a number of bin fires and

19

criminal damage at this location, and the park between Balmoral Road and Park Road. If offences are occurring at these location we will be searching persons present, who could be arrested if they are found to be in possession of items that are proven to be used to cause damage. On a lighter note, the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be present at both the Keynsham Rugby Club and Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park firework displays. The rugby club display is a pay on the gate event, whereas the Avon Valley event is ticket-only. If you wish to report any incident or would like the Neighbourhood Policing Team to attend an event that you are organising, then please make contact through the Avon and Somerset Police website. Charities hoping to double their money in campaign Keynsham’s volunteer litterblitzers and a group that helps people of all ages to improve their wellbeing through music and movement have been given the chance to double their donations this month. Keynsham Wombles and Make A Move, which is also based in the town, are both taking part in Localgiving’s Grow Your Tenner campaign. The not-for-profit social enterprise has £345,000 in match-funding to give away to charities before the deadline on November 17. Localgiving will match one-off £10 donations to the good causes pound for pound, as well as monthly donations of £10 for the first three months. Now both groups are calling on supporters to help them double their money before time

or the funds run out. Michelle Rochester, Make a Move founder and CEO, said the money would be put towards its work with mums suffering post-natal depression, older people with dementia and vulnerable younger people in schools. She added: “Each year Make a Move works with 80 mums, 60 elderly people and around 300 children. We deliver around 25 hours of movement and creativity to the people of B&NES every week. “If people can donate through the Grow Your Tenner campaign it will support us to continue this work, and if all goes well, to reach even more people who need us!” Keynsham Wombles, which now has a network of more than 100 volunteers who give up their time freely to keep the streets

and local countryside free of litter, are also hoping to scoop up some of the funding to support the regular individual work of the Wombles as well as their “Big Womble” group litter blitzes. To help the groups claim some of the match-funding available before November 17, people can make donations to Make A Move at https:// localgiving.org/charity/ makeamove/ or to Keynsham Wombles at https://localgiving. org/charity/keynsham-wombles/

shines again as judges award and a silver cup to the Scouts Photo: Dr Sarah Fox

This year’s Keynsham in Bloom winners receive their certificates at last month’s presentation ceremony Keynsham Wombles were also congratulated on the wonderful work that they carry out in helping to make Keynsham a “litter-free” town. Keynsham Memorial Park was a horticultural delight to visit and a real community hub. The barrier baskets across the bridge and the floral park displays created a real wow factor. Old Vicarage Green was also credited as being a horticultural delight. The judges also commented on the Bloom window competition, saying how it was an excellent way of getting local independent shops involved and at the same time promoting the initiative to their customers. The judges also complimented us on the planters that are located along our High Street, and acknowledged the generous support of our sponsors, Avon Dental Practice, Davies & Way, Morecraft Drury, HJ Paget Commercial Property, Timber Craft and Sportscene, adding that the planters are a very simple, lovely design, adding height and colour to our High Street. Santander volunteers were also praised for their work in re-staining and painting the benches along the High Street and we would like to thank Neil Baker, Tesco Community Champion, for his support. We also received a few pointers on how we can improve our 2017 entry – this year’s competition was a very close call, with only a handful of points between Keynsham and Falmouth, who were the winners of

our South West in Bloom category. We celebrated our success with all our winners at our own Keynsham in Bloom awards evening, which was held at Scout Headquarters. The main hall was packed and buzzing with excitement, as local gardeners, along with community organisations, came along to collect their certificates. More than 74 certificates were handed out to residents and groups. Councillor Lisa O Brien, chair of Keynsham Town Council, congratulated everyone attending the awards and thanked both Bloom volunteers and community groups for all their hard work in helping to make Keynsham such a wonderful town to live and work in. She also congratulated everyone who entered our Keynsham in Bloom Garden Competition and said how wonderful it was to see so many people receiving awards.

floral bike displays. So the search is now on for unwanted bikes that we can use and offer to groups and businesses who would like to come on board. Some organisations or businesses, however, may like to provide their own bike, along with plants and materials The bike trail is also open to community groups, schools and residents. Already a number of people have come forward to say that they would like to display a decorated bike in their front gardens or community space. We are extremely grateful to Jim Bernard, a Bloom volunteer, who was the inspiration behind this project and has agreed to coordinate the trail. Jim, along with other volunteers, will be available at our Winter Festival stall on Friday, November 25, where we will have a bike on display planted up with some seasonal winter flora.

n NEWS Ladies raise £3,900 for captain’s cause

Golfers have teamed up to raise almost £4,000 over the past year to support pioneering research into medical conditions affecting children. Each year, the ladies captain at Saltford Golf Club hosts fundraising events for a chosen charity and this year it was the turn of Rosie Thompson, who chose to support Sparks. Talks and a coffee morning were among the fundraising events hosted at the club, which raised a total of £3,908.06 for the cause. The charity says the sum could help fund a specialist researcher working on a project to prevent brain damage in babies deprived of oxygen at birth. Rosie said she chose Sparks because she worked at Bristol University for over 20 years researching and auditing the hospital and community care given during pregnancies that resulted in a premature birth in the South West region.

Rosie Thompson and Jeanette Cook with the final amount of £3,908.06 raised for Sparks She added: “I’m so pleased with how much we, the ladies, at Saltford have raised. I’ve been working with hospital doctors

and nurses for many years and realised how important it is to have money available to aid research to improve the

outcome of these little babies.” To find out more about Sparks and its work, visit www.sparks. org.uk

LETTERS Strategy recognises town’s ‘separateness’ Last month, the Bath and North East Somerset Council Cabinet agreed to move to the next stage of public consultation on a document known as the ‘West of England Joint Spatial Plan’. As dry as the title of this document sounds, it is actually of

great importance to all residents, because, once finalised, it will help shape the future of our area for the next 20 years. In essence, the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) is a strategic document that earmarks what land will become available for housing and employment purposes up to 2036. At the same time, a Joint Transport Strategy is also being developed by the four West of England authorities which aims to ensure that any new housing that comes over the next two decades is properly supported by up-front

infrastructure improvements – whilst also trying to address the existing deficit in our region’s transport infrastructure. From the perspective of Keynsham residents, there are a few things in the document which I would like to highlight, as well as a few myths I would like to dispel: n Firstly, there are no proposals to allocate any additional land for development between Keynsham and Saltford. Where land is proposed for Keynsham, it is to the north of the railway line outside the flood-plain.

Even if this land does eventually come forward for housing and employment, it will have to come with significant supporting infrastructure – such as the long-discussed relief road that would run alongside the railway between Avon Mill Lane and Broadmead Lane, together with improvements to the Broadmead roundabout. n Secondly, the JSP recognises the real importance of the green belt at Hicks Gate in maintaining the separateness of Keynsham and Bristol, and includes no proposals for development here.

27 After reading our article on Joan Ellison, one of the original teachers at Wellsway School, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, reader Margaret Stephens got in touch. Margaret was one of Joan’s pupils and now lives in California. She sent us this photo of the students and staff at Wellsway Secondary Modern and Keynsham Grammar School taken in July 1958.

This is something I particularly welcome. n Thirdly, the document is still very much at consultation stage – and I would urge all residents to respond to the consultation when it launches in November at www. jointplanningwofe.org.uk Regarding the transport vision, this will also be out to consultation and is primarily at this stage designed to generate discussion and debate. It contains a wide range of ideas, some of which are, in my view, more practical than others. However, it is important at this stage for all transport ideas to be put on the table so that residents can have their say, after which proposals can be further fleshedout and prioritised. I would strongly encourage all residents to get involved in this consultation and give their feedback so that the responses can be considered in the final proposals. Cllr Charles Gerrish (Cons, Keynsham North)

Community needs real ‘affordability’

Having attended a meeting on September 28 designed to allow

town and parish councillors to have a better understanding of the plans of the West of England Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) to increase the size of Keynsham again by a further thousand, I thought I ought to share a few thoughts. Now, I’m certainly no “nimby”. I believe that we have an expanding population, that young people really ought to be able to buy their own homes and that those that are not earning huge sums (and most of us are not these days) ought to be able to rent properties at a manageable cost. I’m also a big believer that the only ones that actually profit from huge price rises are those who are “downsizing” slightly and, to the largest degree, the banks themselves. I’ve a large housing development only 10 metres from my own home, so I hope I’m living up to my principles. But what attracted me to the idea of the development near me was the belief that at least 30 per cent of it would be given over to “affordable housing”. Having researched it further I find that by the term “affordable housing”, by far the majority is made up of

the “joint mortgage” and “help to buy” initiatives. In other words, rather than price houses at a price that can be genuinely and reasonably afforded, you can arrange a “help to buy” initiative designed to assist those that cannot afford inflated house prices and who cannot possibly arrange a mortgage due to “real world” finances. I’d argue that this is not at all what our community needs from “affordable housing”. We need houses that are priced at honest levels of affordability and not to artificially support building companies making extraordinay profits on each small and ordinary house that they build. I’d argue further that we have a responsibility to make sure we are not complicit in allowing our young people to carry such significant debt. How many of us can remember the shock of realising we could only borrow three times our salary and how much that equated to? Local and national government might now have encouraged the banks to tighten up on their “runaway lending” of recent years, but ordinary people did not not intend to encourage businesses and housing groups to further

circumvent the fact that housing is still too expensive and we are all participating in a system that burdens our young people with a barely manageable life of debt. Please visit the consultation on further home building and share your thoughts: www. jointplanningwofe.org.uk and http://bit.ly/2f1Ms4t Dave Biddleston Secretary for Keynsham and Saltford Labour Branch

Doing something for someone else is the Lions Club’s driving motivation and for many years it has had a particular focus on sight conservation and helping blind or partially-sighted people

It was for this reason that a group gathered by the Town Hall in Midsomer Norton last week to walk along the High Street to understand the obstacles a blind person may face. A number of volunteers wore blindfolds including Paul Myers, the popular mayor of Midsomer Norton. It was a rather disconcerting scene as the blindfolds looked like bandages left over from the First World War but they were effective in ensuring the participants could not see ahead, above or to the sides, they could just about see their shirt buttons. In this condition they set off down the road. Also accompanying them were two characterful guide dog puppies in training, whose handlers were remarkably successfully at keeping energetic animals under control.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Suffering Internal Condensation? 5 year guarantee on new double glazing.

On the walk we visited the new hardware store, a welcome addition to the High Street, a coffee shop, M & Co. and another coffee shop at the top of the High Street. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful, the Essence café generously gave free tea and coffee. The main obstacles were narrow pavements, advertising boards and steps. Other volunteers tried to guide the blindfolded people but that is more difficult than it looks and requires a constant stream of instruction to tell the person what is around him. It was overall a very worthwhile exercise by a tremendous group of volunteers belonging to an unsung but highly meretricious organisation. www.jacobreesmogg.com

What right have yobs to ruin park?

This letter is aimed at the mindless individuals who left broken glass near the bandstand in Keynsham Memorial Park during the evening/night of Friday, October 7. Our dog was cut badly on one paw, which needed treatment – this could easily have been a young child, who often play in that area on their bikes and scooters. What right have these yobs to

29

leave their litter, damage litter bins and spray graffiti in an area which is for everyone to enjoy and an asset to the town? A lot of time, effort and money is spent to ensure we have a lovely park only for a minority (some from out of the area, unfortunately) who seem bent on spoiling it. We have a lot of young people to be proud of, it’s a pity others don’t follow their example and make something of themselves. Finally, what good are day patrols when very little happens and hardly any during the night when things do? A Keynsham resident and dog owner

Supporters and members get thinking caps on for charity’s annual quiz night Oh, what a night! The questions were prepped, the bar stocked, tables set with tea lights and tablecloths, all ready for Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s annual fundraising quiz on Saturday, October 8, at Saltford Hall, writes fundraiser Amanda Leonard. An incredible 92 people came along with pens poised and thinking caps on. This year there was an eclectic mix of keen quizzers, from current members and families, trustees, volunteers and staff to business supporters and new friends of the society. More than £1,300 was raised on the night from admission, raffle and bar sales. Huge thanks goes to so many local businesses who contributed some fabulous raffle prizes. Sainsburys, Reflections Hair Salon, The Old Bank, The Little Toy Shack, Trigaci, Somerdale Pavilion, Bonzo Lounge, Pomegranate, The Entertainer and Tesco all contributed generously. Among new friends who attended, staff members from Sainsbury’s put together a team called Les Quizerables, who won the star prize – a hamper of goodies kindly donated by Eveleighs Estate Agents. There was a great atmosphere in the hall as questions were asked and heads were scratched, while the music round featured some old favourites. A lot of hard work goes into organising these events

Quiz teams battle it out at Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s quiz night at Saltford Hall, which raised more than £1,300 for the charity

and without the help and commitment of willing volunteers we wouldn’t get the fantastic results we did. So a massive thank you to Ally on the bar, Mac on the door, and Mary and Nicola who worked their socks off getting those nachos and salsa out. Jethro, Will and Barry were fab with the 100 club and the clearing of the empties,

and generally helping to ensure everyone had a great time. The man of the hour was Nick Leonard, who stepped in at the last minute to be the quiz master for the evening, something he had never done before but he nailed it and hopefully he will come back again next year. Just to top it all off, one of the members William Marsh brought

along a sign he had made, and that took pride of place on the stage. It said in big bold letters “Mencap Quiz!” and it even matched the tablecloths. Thanks, Will! As a self-funded charity Keynsham and District Mencap relies more and more on loyal supporters who attend the events – the more successful the events are, the more opportunities we can offer our members. Framecraft team (from left) Edward Taylor GCF, Alex, Fiona and Colette

Family firm celebrates 25 years in framing A family-run firm that has helped many other local families capture important moments in their lives is celebrating 25 years in business. Framecraft Bath Limited was launched on a market stall by Rod Taylor in 1991 at Green Park Station in Bath to offer bespoke picture framing, before he moved into one of the shop units and, a few years later, was joined by wife Jennifer. The business has expanded to include greetings cards, party products and helium balloons and, ten years ago, was handed to the next generation as it passed

to the couple’s son Edward and his wife Rachel. Edward said: “Our customers love to engage with us in lovely long conversations, inquiring not only about my parents but also about our children and other members of our family that they have interacted with over the years. “That’s the lovely thing about picture framing, the process of choosing the frames allows for lots of interesting conversations and interactions. So we get to really know our customer base to an extent where they become good friends.”

neighbourhoods’ history on the map Keynsham is a changing town, with housing developments reshaping its edges, new street names to learn and new landmarks to become familiar with. And whether you called the town home in 1840, 1940 or live here today, the community has been transforming in front of residents’ eyes for generations – decades of changes you can now see taking place in front of your own eyes, thanks to a new online resource. Historic maps of the town, Saltford and the rest of Bath of North East Somerset have now been published as part of Know Your Place West of England, a project that aims to put local heritage across the region “on the map”. Maps dating back as far as 1844 have been digitally reproduced and, as a result, can now be seen side by side with modern maps at the project’s website, www.kypwest.org.uk Visitors to the site can explore their neighbourhood as it was as far back as the 19th century and see how it has changed by using a sliding divider that allows you to replace a 2016 Ordinance Survey map with one of a number of older maps. And so with a sweep of your mouse you can watch the Keynsham bypass disappear and the Chandag and Park estates transform into fields on the 1844-1888 Ordinance Survey map. Move in the opposite direction and a sweep of land labelled the Keynsham Hams sprouts a large factory block, industrial buildings and

While some old landmarks, such as the Keynsham Union Workhouse, have disappeared there are many buildings that today’s residents would recognize, while some of today’s roads mirror the old field boundaries that existed more than a century ago. Saltford, meanwhile, has expanded to the south and west from just a sprinkling of houses and buildings around the High

Street in the 19th century, a large number of which still stand today, of course. Users can also see local points of interest and landmarks, with links they can click to find out more information – for example, the long-gone Dapps Hill gasworks, brick kiln sites, archaeological remains and more. Councillor Patrick AnketellJones, cabinet member for economic development, said: “This free online resource will be enthusiastically welcomed, not just by professional and amateur historians, but anyone locally who is just interested in the place they live.

“The facility offered by this website to compare different historic maps side by side is a big step forward in extending the fascination of old maps to everyone.” Historic maps of the area that appear on the site include 18871902 Goad Insurance Plans, the 1921-1943 OS map and the 19471965 OS National Grid map. More than 50 project volunteers are preparing further historic maps, which will be added to Know Your Place Bath and North East Somerset over the coming months. The website will continue to grow as more resources, including enclosure and tithe maps, and drawings and photographs from archive and museum collections, are added. The project, which was awarded £379,800 by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has already published maps, archive images and links for Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire and will extend to Somerset and North Somerset in coming months. The collaborative project is led by South Gloucestershire Council, working with key partners including Bath & North East Somerset Council, which runs Bath Record Office. Staff at local museums are identifying items from their collections to appear in an upcoming touring exhibition, which will visit Bath Central Library and Radstock Museum. Details will be announced soon. Visit www.kypwest.org.uk to use the maps and find out more about the ongoing project.

Tiny Tia is a first for town’s fledgling new community

While a Keynsham development will be welcoming plenty of new arrivals, none of them are quite as new as little Tia O’Neill. The tot is the first to be born at Bilbie Green, which is currently being constructed to the south of Keynsham, off Charlton Road, by Barratt Homes. Tia was welcomed by parents Jordan and Albany in September not long after they purchased their first home at the development. Albany said: “This is fantastic for us because we’re proud to say that our new baby Tia is the first to be born at Bilbie Green – a title I’m sure she’ll be proud of – and we’re confident we have absolutely everything we need here right on the doorstep.”

Beat flu this winter with vaccination Families in Keynsham, Saltford and surrounding areas are being urged not to put off getting a free flu vaccination for their children. This year children aged two to four and those in school Years 1, 2 and 3 are all eligible for a free flu vaccination on the NHS, which is given via a nasal spray. Schools nurses across Bath and North East Somerset are running vaccination clinics and families in B&NES can also book an appointment with their GP. Dr Ardiana Gjini, consultant in public health medicine for Bath at NHS England, said: “It is important we protect young children from the flu virus in time for winter and get them vaccinated now. “Children can become very poorly if they catch flu and the infection can sometimes result in a series disease with serious complications. The nasal spray is a quick and painless vaccination that prevents children from catching flu.”

Coffee shop team grow their mos to join conversation about men’s health Four coffee shop workers are hoping to create a bit of a stir throughout November to raise money to support men’s health. A group of men who work together at Costa Coffee in Keynsham High Street are taking part in Movember, joining “Mo Bros” across the UK in growing moustaches during the month in exchange for sponsorship. Lee Fellows, 29, is being joined in the challenge by colleagues Luke Bryant, Harry Hodge and Callum Carr, all 17, as they raise awareness and vital funds for the charity. Lee said: “The inspiration for taking part was simple, to raise funds and, equally important, raise awareness of various men's health issues that often go undiagnosed because men fail to check themselves often enough or talk about their health. Movember aims to tackle issues such as testicular and prostate cancer, suicide prevention and mental health issues. “I think beside the fundraising aspect the most important thing we can do is try to remove the stigma some men face around their health and get informed of what we can do such as testicular checks at home or a prostate exam at the doctors, and who is available if they need support.” It’s the first year the team has got involved in the Movember challenge and Lee added: “The amount we raise this year will act as next year’s target so any

Costa Coffee co-workers, from left, Luke Bryant, Harry Hodge, Lee Fellows and Callum Carr, who will all be growing moustaches for Movember donation big or small really will help!” The group have also thanked boss Mieke and Costa for supporting the event. Extra £1,000 for anniversary homes fund Keynsham-based Andrews Property Group has received a donation of £1,000 towards its 70th anniversary fundraising drive. To mark the milestone, the company launched its P70 initiative earlier this year, aiming to enable Andrews Charitable Trust (ACT) to purchase 50 properties over the next 50 years to provide a roof over the heads of young people leaving care. The latest donation came from West Bromwich Homes, a subsidiary of West Bromwich Building Society.

Andrews group chief executive David Westgate said: “Andrews has, at its heart, a deep commitment to social philanthropy which is why we decided to celebrate our 70th anniversary in this way. “Our entire staff base has been involved in fundraising initiatives throughout the year, but to have support from those we work alongside in the industry provides us with a true endorsement of the values on which our business is built.”

NEWS FROM THE SPACE with Keynsham Arts Consortium

An-Ting sets new standard with stunning recital “In another league” was how one member of the audience described a sold-out concert by renowned pianist An-Ting Chang at The Space in Keynsham. A grand piano was installed at the venue especially for An-Ting’s Exotic Fusions recital on October 29, with a team from Mickleburgh in Bristol expertly manoeuvring the instrument – used by Jamie Cullum and a host of other professionals for touring shows – into the lift and out onto the first floor. “The pieces were beautifully played, the acoustics were excellent and the background to the music was explained in a way we could all understand,” enthused the concert-goer, who said a show of similar standard at venues in Bath or Bristol would have cost at least twice the price. Meanwhile, organisers were delighted to hear from another that it was superior to anything he had seen at The Bristol Music Club over the years. It was a memorable event for spectators and An-Ting was presented with a memento of the occasion by Siri Edwards on behalf of the organisers. Coming up as we head into

Success for launch of Parkinson’s group

Almost 40 people attended the first meeting of the new Parkinson’s UK Keynsham group coffee morning at the Talbot, on Bath Road, on Tuesday, October 25, writes our correspondent. It was exciting to discover that people had come as a result of notices or articles in the local papers, and that there is a real enthusiasm for getting together and meeting others who either care for someone with Parkinson's or have it themselves. There was plenty of friendly mingling and sharing of experiences, and local medical services were much talked about. Chairman Robin Tanner explained the work done by Parkinson's groups in the Bath and District area. There was a chance to find out what sort of meeting this could become, and it was clear that it was important to have contact with others. It was felt generally that a good start had been made, and we were all looking forward to the next meeting which will be

GARDENING TIPS In the garden

very attractive “drop earrings” and the several euonymous give a nice splash of yellow. Roses are working hard. We have a yellow and a red and each is doing its best to produce blooms at the top of each bush. All the garden furniture is finding its way into storage, so that it can dry and be cleaned and treated as necessary. I have been having a very determined clearing of the neglected corners in the shed, and have found some

amazing things. A tree trunk cut into four pieces lengthwise, two small fence panels with no home to go to, some ring culture pots for tomato growing, which never seemed successful, and a big roll of heavy duty-netting. I know what the last item was from. When our garden was divided 36 years ago. I have cleared my shed of an old ladder, completely rotten, a garden lounger I intended to repair, and an old plastic dustbin split down

one side. Why did I keep that? Now I have space to use tools and small machinery. Leaves are falling rapidly now the colder temperatures are here. The pear trees are almost bare and the carpet on the grass is quite deep. So there is a job for the next few days, get them into the green waste bin. I used to pile them into a shallow pit at the end of the garden, where they rotted down nicely, but the digging out is becoming a chore. The leaf mould produced was a great benefit to the soil but at what cost to my back! November can be a dreary month, but today the sun is shining. When it is cool is a good time to plant tulips. The received wisdom is to plant in big drifts. OK if you have a big garden. We stick to large tubs. Have a look now at any trellises, frames, supports etc. that are holding any roses or other climbers. Ensure they are all sound and check ties. Look for any dead or diseased branches in bigger tres and clear them. Make sure any cuts are clean, no ragged edges for pests to overwinter in. And then have a hot cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a sitdown.

bin. Cut a piece of wire mesh to a slightly larger diameter than the base of your bin, place it over the hole then place your bin on top. Successful composting relies on a mix of material – “greens” and “browns” – moisture and oxygen to encourage the micro organisms that turn waste into compost. “Greens” break down quickly and add moisture to the compost. They include any plant material such as brassica stems, fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, plant leaves, cut flowers, annual weeds and softwood cuttings. I suggest excluding perennial weeds such

as couch grass or bindweed as the roots may not rot. “Browns”’ break down more slowly and add carbon and fibre to the mix. Importantly they also form air pockets, allowing air flow which helps everything to compost. “Browns” include dry leaves, prunings, twigs, cardboard, shredded paper. It is important to add greens and browns in layers of roughly equal parts or the composting process will stall. Periodically turn over the contents of the bin to improve air circulation or, better still, have a second bin and empty

the contents of the first bin into that. It normally takes at least three to 12 months to produce compost, depending on the temperature and contents of the bin. Compost is a nutrient-rich food product for your garden and will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keep your soil’s pH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Compost helps the environment, improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it.

If I were an apple and grew on a tree I think I'd fall down on a nice boy like me. I wouldn’t stay there giving nobody joy, I'd fall down at once and say, “Eat me, my boy.” Our month in the garden seems to have been taken up with apples. Fruit damaged by maggot or bird, pick up and prepare for stewing. Go over each tree and pick the ripe fruit, sort and store, and occasionally sample one. We have a Lord Lambourne tree which gives a large, round red fruit, quite hard but sweet and juicy. The Bramleys both have a good crop and I have picked and sorted them into boxes. The sound ones will hopefully keep until early spring, stored on shelves in a dark, cool shed. Picking fruit can be a very time-consuming activity and tiring if each apple is examined closely. So I only do two or three pickings. Some get damaged when they fall but one cannot be too fussy when time is at a premium! We shall have good colour in the garden with the bed of asters glowing a dark pink. The Fuschia Magellanica alongside also have

On the plot At this time of the year the major job for most vegetable gardeners is getting rid of the plant waste from the plot. The best way to do this is by creating a compost bin. The alternatives are to burn the waste, but please be considerate to your neighbours, or taking it to the local recycling facility. Neither is friendly to the environment so composting is by far the best option. Compost bins can be obtained from garden centres or from the local councils at relatively low prices. If your budget is low then try making your own from recycled wood or pallets. Ideally site your bin on bare soil so that it’s easy for beneficial microbes and insects to gain access to the rotting material. It also allows for better aeration and drainage, both important to successful composting. If you’re worried about vermin becoming a problem, adding a wire mesh base to your bin when you set it up can help avoid problems later. Dig a shallow hole (approximately one-inch deep) that is equal to the diameter of your

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Victorian Model Farms

At last month’s meeting of the society, local historian Bill Evans described the results of his research into the changes in farming in the Victorian period. The advent of mechanization and steam power was combined with new thinking to make many aspects of farming more efficient. Wealthy landowners built new “Model Farms” with buildings grouped together to increase productivity, and Mr Evans described several of these in our area. The finest example is Eastwood Manor Farm at East Harptree while there is a smaller one named Model Farm at Norton Hawkfield near Whitchurch. No examples have been identified in the immediate Keynsham area, possibly due to the pattern of land ownership. The evening gave an insight into in the development of modern farming which few in the audience were aware of and proved both interesting and enjoyable.

standard. This was reflected in the quality of the tiles used for the flooring in the public areas. Many different designs were used and at intervals over the history of the building areas were relaid with new patterns. After the Dissolution of the abbey in 1539, the building was quickly demolished and much of the stone work re-used in other buildings. Flooring was more difficult to remove and tended to be buried, so that when the

remains were excavated in the 1960s a good selection of these medieval floor tiles was found. The number and variety of these inspired the society’s late president, Barbara Lowe, to become an expert on the subject and she wrote a comprehensive book on her findings. Most of the tiles are now in the care of the local authority and several members of the society have spent the last year assisting staff in the B&NES Archaeology

“I would just like to say a big heartfelt thank you for looking after our dad (pops) so well. Accepting the fact at a young age that carers were required is not easy. What we never could have guessed at that time was that we would have met such genuine, kind, professionals and fun people who would add so much to a quality of life which was otherwise slowly declining. You were all very much part of the family and Pops really enjoyed the time he spent with each and everyone of you. He seemed more comfortable with any of your carers than he did with a lot of other people and I think it was because he was able to relax and be himself. You were also an incredible support for the rest of the family, allowing life to go on as best as possible for the rest of us. As things got tougher towards the end you were a huge support for Mum too, assisting her with appointments and visiting Pops in hospital made a huge difference at a time when we really needed the help. You have all become friends to us, and thank you awfully for putting up with his awful jokes.“ The Harris Family.

blessings. Likewise, if we only focus on the good, we might fail to notice or deal with small issues that become too big to handle when allowed to develop before they hit us head on. If we keep our vision open to every aspect of our lives and the fantastic world we live in, we start to notice the good things in our own existence and in the lives of others around us. We start to notice small blessings and gifts that we hadn’t been aware of before. If and when problems arise (and they do), we get an early sighting of them, affording us time, if possible, to slow our approach towards them, enabling us to deal with them before they become unmanageable. We have time to recognise the strengths and abilities we have to deal with issues effectively. We can use our imagination to see our goals on our horizon and to work out how to “drive” ourselves on towards them. Being open in our view of the world gives us a much safer and enjoyable journey through life. Bon voyage!

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non-Fiction

The Olive Tree by Carol Drinkwater (Audio CD) Narrated by the author herself, Carol Drinkwater, this audio book charts her journey in search of the routes that olive cultivation has taken over the centuries. Set during spring in the Mediterranean, it is above all a tale of our time. Troubled by challenges her own South of France farm is experiencing, Carol realises new approaches to farming are becoming essential, so she embarks on a quest which takes her south through Spain, Morocco, Algeria and Italy before she finally returns to her farm. Through her travels and vivid encounters, Carol confronts some of the critical issues of our time – land-care and the harsh realities of diminishing water reserves – and ends her momentous journey in the company of olive growers whose vision for the future is remarkable and ingenious. This is the first book of the series set in the olive farm. A delightful audio bringing a bit of sunshine into an autumnal day.

obsessed with the occupants of the houses she passes every day. She fantasises about the lives she thinks the couples are having. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Rachel tries to solve the mystery. Each chapter is told from initially Rachel’s views and then the other couples’ views. Rachel is not that likeable to begin with but that is the interesting part of this book. It is Rear Window meets Gone Girl and a great psychological thriller and modern tale.

Following on from the BBC’s series of modern poetry, why not visit the poetry section in Keynsham Library for a different read? Poems of the Seasons illustrated by Gordon Beningfield Gordon Beningfield’s exquisite watercolour paintings complement the huge variety of poems

Adult Fiction

contained in this anthology on the changing seasons. Arnold, Blake, Browning, Chaucer, Hughes, Rossetti, Shakespeare, Shelly and Wordsworth – all the favourites are

here, along with many other poets taken from 400 years of poetry. The perfect book for this time of year!

Children’s Fiction

The Wombles go round the World by Elizabeth Beresford Hands up if you remember The Wombles? Well, they’re back, in a reprint of the original 1970s titles by Elizabeth Beresford MBE. For those of you who don’t remember them first time round, Wombles are funny little creatures who live in a burrow on Wimbledon Common and who enjoy recycling all the rubbish that humans leave behind them. Come and join Great Uncle Bulgaria, Tobermory, Bungo, Orinoco, Wellington, Tomsk and, of course, the delightful Madame Cholet on their various comic escapades. A great read for junior readers and their older friends and relatives too. When Martha’s Away by Bruce Ingman Have you ever wondered what your pet gets up to when you’re out of the house all day? Meet Lionel and his friends and read all about their antics when Lionel’s owner Martha goes out to work. The tongue-incheek humour of this wonderful picture book really is a treat for children and adults alike. It’s a firm favourite of several of the library staff.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Nigel Somers, senior pastor at Keynsham Elim Church

So significant A nurse wrote these words: During my second month of nursing college, our professor gave us a short test to see how well we were remembering our lectures. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Why had the professor put that in the test? Surely that was not relevant to our studies. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class

ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our test score. “Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.” “I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.” When I read the bible, one of the things about Jesus that stands out to me is the value he placed on people. Although he often spoke to crowds, he also made an effort to get to know people as individuals. The bible records many one-toone conversations that Jesus had with the people of the time. And as he came to know them, he acknowledged them and helped them. The gospels are filled with stories of all sorts of people and their encounters with Jesus. He was compassionate to the poor, the sick, the hurting, the outcasts. In the bible, the gospel of Mark, we find the eye-witness account of

Peter, one of the twelve disciples. Peter recalls: “Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.” (Mark 6:49) By his words and his actions, Jesus showed how significant we all are to God, even if we think of ourselves as insignificant. Another

of his disciples, John, recorded these words: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) By the way, do you know the name of the people who help you? If not, why not find out, and make some time to talk to them.

Somerset artist Rob Heard’s thought-provoking First World War commemoration is coming to the grounds of Bristol Cathedral. Six members of a Keynsham church will be travelling to Romania to help deliver Christmas gifts donated by local people. For several years, Elim Keynsham Church in Balmoral Road has been collecting gifts packed in shoeboxes, destined for young people from poor families in Romania. Last year, 380 shoeboxes were collected and a small team from the church travelled to Oradea with the charity Support for Romania to visit families and hand out the gifts. The annual “shoebox” appeal has now been launched for 2016, with people invited to pack a shoebox with gifts aimed at a certain age group, from babies up to 18-year-olds. The boxes should be wrapped in Christmas paper and filled with age-appropriate gifts, and a leaflet featuring a guide to what

can be included is available at http://keynshamelim.com/blog/ shoebox-appeal-2016 The boxes need to be brought to the church by Thursday, November 17, which is hosting a thanksgiving event on November 20 from 5pm, with afternoon tea and then a service from 6pm. One of the volunteers who made the trip to Romania last year said: “If I could only capture the smile and excitement on the children’s faces when they received their gift I’m sure it would inspire every person in Keynsham to give a shoebox.”

Could you lead Fry Club FC’s A team to league success?

Having enjoyed success over the past few seasons the A team at Fry Club FC are currently without a long-term management solution, something the club is keen to address, writes our correspondent. The main roles for any successful applicant will be to support the two County League Senior squads while working in partnership with the very experienced B team manager to progress young players coming through the ranks of our junior teams. Player progression is a core value at Fry Club FC and the management team and coaches all work together to support each player to achieve their potential.

We are looking for an individual or a small team a with the motivation and desire to be a manager or coach of an adult football team within the thriving network of a large club. Experience would be preferred but it is certainly not essential as the successful candidate will benefit from the full support of the experienced committee and management teams of our three other senior squads. All expressions of interest in the role should be made to the Club Secretary Steve Curtis on 07929 746 815 or email him at stevecurtis@blueyonder.co. uk

Bowlers’ tour brings donations rolling in Keeping up a 30-year tradition, the male members of Keynsham Bowling Club went on tour at the start of September, writes our correspondent. Accompanied by the “Tour Pig” money box, the tourists raise money for a chosen charity via contributions from the clubs they play against – and from fines for any “misdemeanours” by the visitors. This year the tourists were based in Weymouth and decided to support one of the charities chosen by the Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Alan Hale, who is also a Keynsham councillor. A total of £400 was raised, which was donated to the RICE Institute at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, which provides specialist services to assess, diagnose and offer treatment to people with memory problems. The unit also offers a dedicated Carers Course for spouses, family

and carers of those affected by dementia. Councillor Hale attended

the monthly coffee morning at the bowling club to receive the cheque, and our picture shows

him wearing the Club tie with representatives of the touring party, and the Tour Pig.

Club doubles up for tennis tournament With the promise of heavy showers almost all day, Fry Tennis Club carried on regardless, in true British style, to hold their American Doubles Tournament last month, writes our correspondent. Sixteen members, covering five decades in age, gathered outside their clubhouse at Somerdale at 1.15pm to be reminded of the rules of the competition. Players were divided into either Team A or Team B and these teams had already been decided by Mark Long, one of the tournament organisers. Team A consisted of predominantly male players, plus a few stronger ladies, and the remainder were in Team B. On each court, a member of Team A was paired with a member of Team B and they were drawn against a similar pairing. This resulted in a doubles match on each of the four courts lasting five games. The results were then passed

Tournament finalists, from left, Debby, James, Mike and Kerry to the tournament referee for the day, Jane Long, against individual names. The winning pair on each court stayed put and the losers moved on to the next court and so on. The original pairings were then split so everyone had a new partner and new opposition. This format continued for seven rounds and the four winners were the ones with the two highest individual scores in each team. The showers, some light and some heavy, continued throughout the afternoon but

play was only halted for a few minutes on one occasion. After the seven rounds, everyone enjoyed a marvellous selection of sweet and savoury food, all donated by those present. Suitably sustained, the winner of Team A and the second placed player in Team B played the winner of Team B and the second place player in Team A. A full set was played, on our Number 1 court, with a tie break decider if necessary. The final was a very tight match but, in the end, Debby Williamson and James Taylor

beat Kerry Grace and Mike Salmon, six games to four. Debby and James were delighted because they had been runners up in the previous tournament. They were presented with their trophies – a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine – and were heartily congratulated by everyone present. After clearing up, most of the players headed over to the Somerdale Pavilion where they enjoyed a post-tournament drink and the inevitable discussions. It was unanimously agreed that, despite the bad weather, it had been a very enjoyable afternoon. If you would like to join in the fun and play some social and competitive tennis with Fry Tennis Club, please don’t hesitate to contact Debby Williamson, club secretary, on either 07825 721459 or email her at debbywilliamson63@yahoo. co.uk

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field

October saw Keynsham Town’s First Team slip back slightly in the race for promotion from the Toolstation Western League Division One, writes our correspondent.

After a good 2-0 win at home to Cheddar on October 1, a chilly Tuesday evening saw Keynsham visit Radstock Town and come away with all three points after a hard-fought 1-0 win. The game was a tight affair with few clear-cut opportunities in front of goal. However, it was settled by a spectacular goal in the 35th minute from 60 yards by Ks forward Ben Harris. The Radstock keeper mishit a freekick from the touchline and the ball fell to Harris, who took one touch to get the ball under control before unleashing a shot which sailed into the empty net. Nineteen-year-old Harry Neil had a great chance to make it 2-0 with five minutes to go, but could only find a tame shot after a great run. However, the Ks held on for the victory. Three days later saw the Ks visit Bishop Sutton on a Friday evening as part of the Western League’s “Ground Hop” weekend. This was the second year that this weekend extravaganza has taken place and involves a Friday night game, four successive games across Saturday and two more on the Sunday. As with last season, more than 1,700 fans from all over the world (not just the UK) attended the seven fixtures. A bumper crowd of 247 at Lake View saw an even game which was unfortunately spoiled by a bizarre refereeing display which left players, coaches and spectators equally baffled. After a tight first half where both defences dominated, the hosts wasted three great chances to take the lead in the second half. They were left to rue those misses when Ben Harris again

The Ks at Bishop Sutton for the Western League’s ‘Ground Hop’ found himself in the right place at the right time in the 89th minute, as he calmly slotted home after being put clear to give the Ks another priceless 1-0 away win. The following Wednesday was another evening away game at Ashton & Backwell United, but this time Keynsham’s fine run came to an end with a disappointing 2-1 defeat. The hosts took advantage of the steep slope when they converted a corner on 12 minutes after Keynsham failed to clear the ball. However, the Ks soon hit back, and a fine team goal finished off by Sam Duggan made it all square at the break. The first half hour of the second half saw the Ks pour forward down the slope, but some scintillating football was not matched by their finishing, as Matty Brown, Kyle Box, Mike Winer and Ben Harris all squandering great chances. These misses were to prove critical, as the hosts scored a carbon-copy goal from another corner on 75 minutes and closed the game out without too many more alarms. A break from league action followed, as Keynsham made the short journey to Premier League outfit Longwell Green Sports for a Les Phillips Cup Preliminary Round tie. Manager Chris King made a few changes to give some key players a rest and they ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline after a disjointed performance. Centre forward Matty Brown scored a consolation goal in injury time to make it 16 goals for him in his

debut season for the Ks. A massive top-of-the-table clash was set for Saturday, October 22, as Keynsham visited Wellington with both teams level on 36 points. Chances were few and far between in the first half, but a momentary lapse in concentration from the Ks’ defence gifted a free header in the 20th minute, which was easily converted. The Ks were able to stamp their mark on the game after the interval and started to produce some of their trademark flowing football on a difficult surface. A lovely interchange between Ben Harris and Matty Brown on the hour saw Harris’s shot go over the bar when he should have scored. Wellington then made the game safe in the 75th minute, when one of their many long throws forced an error in the Ks’ defence which was duly punished. The hosts held on comfortably for a 2-0 victory. Manager Chris King said: “The lads need to remain positive, as we are still in a good position at this stage of the season. It just shows that every game is tough in this division and you have to remain focused to win games. We had a run of six games without conceding a goal and that takes some doing at any level of football. Yes, you need the rub of the green at times, but everyone was working hard to stop the opposition. “At Backwell we were disappointed to concede two goals from set pieces and then at Wellington we again conceded two goals that in previous weeks

At the end of the month, this left the league table looking like this: First Division P W D L F Wellington 18 13 3 2 41 Hengrove 18 12 2 4 51 KEYNSHAM 18 12 1 5 41 Malmesbury 18 10 4 4 44

we would have dealt with. That is frustrating, especially when you have played the better football and created good chances in both games”. The month ended with a pulsating clash at the AJN Stadium, where visitors Welton Rovers twice gave away a lead but then equalised themselves with only minutes remaining. The first half was an even affair, with both teams going close but neither able to finish some lovely moves. However, Welton took the lead on 33 minutes after Ks keeper Ash Wintle made a rare error, as he couldn’t hold a shot and the rebound was tapped into an empty net. The game exploded into life after Chris King made a double substitution on the hour. Sub Pat Davison equalised within three minutes of coming on, but Welton regained the lead almost immediately. Midfield maestro Sam Duggan headed home with 10 minutes to go to make it 2-2, before popping up again in the 86th minute to put the Ks 3-2 ahead with a superb 20-yard strike into the bottom corner. Amazingly though, the visitors again responded only two minutes later with a similar fine shot, which gave Wintle no chance. So the spoils were shared after a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Ks are again on the road for much of November, with their only home First Team league game being on Saturday, November 26, when Malmesbury Victoria visit Crown Fields (3pm kick-off). However, Hengrove Athletic also visit Crown Fields on Tuesday, November 8, for a Somerset Premier Cup second round clash (7.45pm kick-off). The club’s Reserves have had a mixed bag of results so far this season and currently sit in 10th place in the Somerset County League Division One East with six points from six games. The A Team lie fifth in the Bristol & Suburban League Division 3 with 10 points from eight games. Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).
