Green light for studies on Hicks Gate and new city link

‘Game-changing’ transport schemes take step forward “Game-changing” transport schemes for the Keynsham area have taken a step forward with a deal to spend more than £400,000 on looking into improvements to the Hicks Gate roundabout to reduce congestion. A second study will investigate the potential for a rapid transit scheme – including options for an underground link

– between Keynsham and Bristol city centre. The projects will be funded as part of a £6 million investment by the West of England Combined Authority into looking at ways to keep the region moving, which won unanimous backing from local council leaders and metro mayor Tim Bowles on October 30.

As a result, work can begin on a £460,000 business case to look into reducing peak-time delays at Hicks Gate, including the potential for a new link from the A4174 ring road to the A4 Keynsham bypass that could remove many cars from the roundabout. The scheme will take into account any future link Turn to Page 2

‘Commitment to get region moving’ From Page 1 between the A4 and A37 as well as the proposed relocation of Brislington Park and Ride. Meanwhile, a feasibility study into a rapid transport scheme to link the Keynsham area with Bristol city centre will also get the green light. Tim Warren, Bath and North East Somerset Council leader, backed the plans alongside Bristol mayor Marvin Rees and South Gloucestershire Council leader Matthew Riddle, telling the WECA meeting that the rapid transit scheme would be “a real game-changer”. Welcoming the proposals ahead of the meeting, he said: “The A4 between Bristol and Bath is well known as one of the busiest roads in our region, and Hicks Gate roundabout in particular is notorious for causing tailbacks at peak times. It’s therefore very positive news that the West of England

Combined Authority is looking at improvements to this roundabout to increase road capacity and get traffic moving. “Alongside this, we are also looking at longer-term plans to improve journeys, such as extending the A4174 Avon Ring Road to link with the A37 and south Bristol. Road improvements such as these are essential to supporting economic growth and ensuring we have the infrastructure to meet our region’s growing population. Together with the other transport measures being considered by the West of England Combined Authority, including bus and rail improvements, this could represent a real game-changer for transport in the Keynsham area.” Other studies that will receive some of the £6m funding include those that will look at an orbital road between Whitchurch and

Keynsham Royal British Legion will once again be leading commemorations for those who have fallen in war, with their annual Remembrance Day parade and two minutes’ silence on Armistice Day. Intermittent road closures will be in place on Sunday, November 12, between 9am and 11.30am, to allow the parade to make its way from Ashton Way at 9am, along the bottom of Rock Road and then down the High Street to St John’s Church for a service. The parade will then march back along the High Street and down Bath Hill to the Memorial Park gates, arriving at 10.55am for the laying of wreaths. The procession will then return along Bath Hill, march back along the High Street and onto Ashton Way for dismissal. The day before the parade, on Saturday, November 11, the annual two minutes’ silence for Armistice Day will be observed

in St John’s Church instead of outside Keynsham Memorial Park gates as in previous years because of a stricter application procedure for road closures. The church will open its doors from 10.45am until 11.15am, where the vicar will lead a prayer in front of plaques honouring the fallen and the silence will take place at 11am. It will be followed by the Last Post and the Bearing of Standards and anyone wishing to join the ceremony is welcome. A spokesperson for Keynsham Royal British Legion said: “On behalf of the Royal British Legion, we hope that as many people as possible will come to observe the silences and watch the parade. People of Keynsham and surrounding areas are some of the finest and we hope the numbers, both on Armistice Day and at the Remembrance Parade, will continue to grow. “Please note that this year there are poppies displayed along the parade route and we hope that the people of Keynsham and those passing through will enjoy seeing them.”

Remembering the Great Flood – and how you can help Next year sees the 50th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1968. It’s an event etched in the memories of everyone who lived in the area at the time, yet there is no memorial in Keynsham – a situation Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society is aiming to rectify, with the help of residents, as the group explains here.

The ancient County Bridge Stone was also known as the Abbot’s Seat

The Great Flood brought tragedy and misery, but also many examples of heroism and selflessness. Much has been written about the flood and in previous years exhibitions and dramatic productions have been staged to commemorate it. Yet, apart from a flood level marker in Dapps Hill, Keynsham has no physical reminder of that night, and no memorial to those who died when their car was

swept off the Chew Bridge in the town centre. Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society believes it is time to rectify this omission and is proposing a project to construct a permanent commemoration of the event. Many bridges along the River Chew were destroyed or irreparably damaged by the flood. One of these was the ancient County Bridge on the Bitton

n NEWS Road. Built into the north parapet of this was the County Bridge Stone, sometimes known as the Abbot’s Seat as it was reputed to have come from Keynsham Abbey. Older residents have fond memories of sitting with “one foot in Somerset and the other in Gloucestershire”. The ancient stone was swept away but later recovered; since then it has been out of sight in the council’s archaeology store. The society is planning to reinstall this stone in Keynsham Memorial Park with a commemorative plaque and an explanation of the history of the stone and the events of July 10, 1968 to inform future generations. The project has the support of Keynsham Town Council and permission to use and display the stone has been obtained from B&NES Council. To display the stone in an appropriate way has a substantial cost and the society is launching a public appeal to raise £5,000. It is hoped that the memorial will

history of the town and hope they will consider making a small contribution towards making it a reality.” A donation form can be downloaded from the society’s

website – www.keysalthist. org.uk – or collected from the Keynsham Town Council office at 15-17 Temple Street. Details of how to donate online will also be posted on the website.

How can I help my stressed dog? There are a number of situations when dogs can experience stress and anxiety. For example, dogs can develop fear over loud noises such as fireworks, or they may find travelling, stays at kennels, moving house or visits to the vet or groomer stressful. It can also be something a dog experiences regularly – for example, being left alone during the day or meeting unfamiliar dogs or people on walks. Thinking about how a dog is coping with a situation is important, alongside providing the support they need to cope. In all situations the dog will display signs of trying to escape from whatever they are finding stressful. These signs may include: l Looking away l Muzzle licking or yawning l Low body posture l Restlessness l Trembling l Elimination l Vocalisation – barking, whining l Salivation l Panting If the stressful situation is not resolved using these tactics the dog may either continue the behaviour or adopt different coping behaviours, for example: l Hiding away l Decreased appetite l Increased sleep or disturbance of sleep patterns l Overgrooming Identifying what a dog finds stressful is an important first step. This may be obvious (for example, going into a vet practice) but it may be less obvious (for example, when out on a walk), therefore it

may be necessary to seek the advice of a qualified behaviourist in order to understand what is going on. A stress prevention and treatment program should focus on gradual change, consistency and reward. This can be achieved in some situations by slowly exposing the dog to the stressful stimulus. For example, a dog that finds travelling in the car stressful may be helped if you start off by rewarding the dog for remaining calm around the car, progressing to sitting in a car with the doors open and the engine off, then having the engine on, before even thinking about travelling anywhere. This way the dog is exposed slowly to the elements of travelling in a car. The same can be considered for sound sensitivities – a CD can be played quietly in the background while a dog is rewarded for calm behaviour, and over time the volume of the sounds can be increased. Dog appeasing pheromones (like ADAPTIL by Ceva Animal Health) have been shown to help dogs cope with situations they find challenging. They mimic the natural pheromone that is released by a mother dog a few days after giving birth to her puppies, giving them a sense of comfort and security when they are near her. It can also be used alongside behaviour training, as it lowers the dog’s anxiety, allowing them to concentrate on what they are learning. For more information on dog appeasing pheromones, please contact us at Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700.

Church appeal to fill gap of £45,000 A Keynsham church is turning to the community to help it fill a £45,000 gap in funds to pay its bills by the end of the year. St John’s Church, in the High Street, says rising costs from the Diocese of Bath and Wells, static numbers in the congregation and the fact some generous supporters have moved away have combined to leave the church with a deficit. All Anglican churches in the local area pay a sum to the central diocese, which then in turn pays for staff costs – Keynsham has three full-time clergy and has just taken on a part-time children and families worker, who will be funded in full by the diocese for the first year. The church used reserves to settle the bill in 2012 and has kept a close eye on its budget since – but diocese charges have gone up by £8,000 in the last two years, adding £16,000 to the total St John’s now faces. In a bid to raise extra funds, the church has sent information packs to everyone connected with St John’s – and letters to groups who use the premises – to raise awareness of the situation and appeal for pledges. The church team says it is now hoping that the wider community can help, too. Rev Stephen M’Caw said: “The church building is a vital part of the town’s heritage, it is the worshipping community that keep it running and therefore supporting the church helps keep

the building going. But more than that, the church is there for anybody, and through baptisms, weddings, funerals, concerts and so on many, many people come through its doors over the course of a year. “If more people in the town helped with just a little finance, then the church finances would be so much more healthy. It’s the church for everybody in the town, there for all of us – whenever we might need it.” The church organises events throughout the year that raise thousands towards costs, including concerts, a summer fete, year-round jam and marmalade sales and the popular Christmas Tree Festival, which returns on December 8-10. Dr M’Caw said the church would not stop functioning as a result of the financial situation but it needed to be able to settle its bills. The church building itself, which is currently in good condition, costs around £7,000 a year to maintain, he said, excluding heating, insurance and similar costs. This is paid for by the Friends of St John’s, legacies and general church funds, while bigger repairs would require extra fundraising. Anyone who would like to find out more about the St John’s appeal can contact the parish office on 0117 986 3354, visit www.keynshamparish. org.uk or donate at https:// mydonate.bt.com/charities/ keynshampcc

Big turnout for latest litter blitz

A number of footpaths and streets in need of some TLC have been given the Keynsham Wombles treatment in a weekend litter blitz. Meeting at St Francis Church in Warwick Road on Sunday, October 29, more than 40 volunteers from the group and the church, spent two hours bagging up rubbish dropped in the surrounding area. Chief Womble Erica Davies said the group managed to cover most of the Federated Estate, plus Tintagel and the park behind Castle School, collecting around 40 sacks of litter. With volunteers identifying some bottle tops that are no longer manufactured among the haul, they concluded that some of the rubbish had been left a long time ago. Erica said: “We had a huge turnout of volunteers, as I completely ran out of hi-vis vests! We had a lovely tea party

Votes will help ‘Chocolate Train’ get back on track A little steam engine that was once a familiar sight to workers at Fry’s chocolate factory is almost ready to pull its first passenger train – but the project needs the public’s help. Volunteers at Avon Valley Railway, who have been painstakingly restoring the Sentinel locomotive since it was saved from the scrapheap in 2009, have entered a competition that could see them secure £5,000 – if they get enough votes. The Sentinel is on track to steam again next year after work on its boiler has been completed, but it won’t be powerful enough to pull the trains used on the heritage railway’s other

passenger services. Instead, visitors will climb aboard an old British Railways guard van to take a ride behind the 1928 locomotive – the same type of guard van that would once have brought up the rear of the trains heading to the factory at Somerdale. The guard van is in need of serious restoration, however, requiring a range of materials, including expensive timber to replace its rotten panelling. “With its open verandas at each end it’s perfect for the job,” explains railway trustee Roger Eynon. “From there passengers will be able to see, hear and smell the engine at close quarters, and

even look right into its cab to see the crew driving their train.” To get the money they need, volunteers have applied for support from the Aviva Communities Fund, run by insurance company Aviva, which awards the cash to the projects

£50,000 goes to vital research in Jack’s

A Saltford couple whose 17-yearold son died of an undiagnosed heart condition are helping to fund vital research into preventing similar tragedies in future. June and Dave Boulton have raised a staggering £115,000 for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in memory of Jack since his unexpected death in August 2009. With the help of friends and the local community, June, Dave and Jack’s sister Lucy have funded cardiac testing for around 600 young people since 2013 with a series of screening events at Wellsway, Jack’s former school. Now, as revealed in an announcement by CRY chief executive Dr Steven Cox, the Jack Boulton Memorial Fund will be devoting £50,000 towards research projects to look at the cause of sudden cardiac death and how to improve ways of

There is no audition, with the focus firmly on

learning new songs and having fun while doing so. The group is currently practicing for its annual Christmas celebration, which will take place at Keynsham Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 12, at 2pm. The singers will be joined by pupils from Chandag Infant School to sing some festive favourites. There will be mince pies and refreshments and, while there is no charge for admission, a retiring collection will be taken in

aid of a Keynsham charity. Mr Jones said: “Our Keynsham choir are really establishing themselves as an excellent group. We have sung at the Keynsham Music Festival for the last two years to packed audiences and new members are always welcome to come along on a Wednesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm to see if they might like to join us.” Find out more about the choir at www.goodafternoon choir.org

Artists’ pop-up shop returns for busy, creative winter ahead A group of artists will once again be setting up shop in the centre of Keynsham in the run-up to Christmas. ArtSpace 6 will open its doors at 23 Temple Street from Tuesday, November 14, displaying a range of art and crafts by members, who will also be using the rear of the vacant shop unit as a studio and workshop. Among the items for sale will be a selection of paintings, photography, glasswork, prints, ceramics and handmade textiles alongside a secondhand vintage clothes rail. The pop-up shop, which is open until Saturday, December 16, is just part of a busy winter season ahead for the nomadic ArtSpace group, whose work will also be on show in the Libourne Lounge on the first floor of

Keynsham Library during the same period. Taking the Keynsham Winter Festival’s woodland creatures theme as inspiration for the exhibition of 2D art, the group will change the display halfway through the month to show work by as many members as possible. ArtSpace will also be joining the activities during the Winter Festival on November 24 with a stall in the front room of the Fear Hall displaying 3D art and craftwork. The group will be putting their creative skills to more good use as part of the Christmas Tree Festival at St John’s Church, decorating a tree to be displayed during the festival from December 8-10. Artists are planning to make decorations from traditional glass and ceramics as well as more

contemporary decorations made from laser-cut paper and wood. The decorations will also be available in the pop-up shop in Temple Street. Chair of ArtSpace Joe Tymkow said: “The ArtSpace group are totally uninhibited by the fact that they have no permanent venue from which to operate. “By organising regular activities, the use of social media and good old word-of-mouth the group are attracting a lot of attention lately. Artists from Bristol, Bath and across B&NES are making inquiries about joining the group. “We are really pleased that the group has come together so effectively. We have a lot of support from within the community and genuine interest from beyond. I can confidently

Don't miss NOW is the best time to get vaccinated for the flu (influenza). It takes about two weeks after vaccination to gain optimal protection. Santa Dash helps children’s charity ‘in it for the long run’ This year’s Saltford Santa Dash will be raising much-needed funds for a charity that says it is “in it for the long run” when it comes to supporting families with terminally children. Organisers choose a different official charity for the fun run every year, raising more than £40,000 to date, and this year’s very worthy cause is the Jessie May Trust Hospice at Home. Registration is now open for the five-mile costumed fun run, which returns on Sunday, December 3. Richard Evans, chair of the organising team, said: “We have raised over £40,000 for local charities to date and I would like to thank Saltford Sports and

Social Club, local businesses and the community for their support, without which there would be no Santa Dash. “This year we are supporting Jessie May, which cares for terminally ill children and their families in Bath, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire. I am sure readers and participants will agree that this is hugely important and valuable work.” The charity’s specialist nurses provide care for children in their own homes, offering respite for families, emotional support, endof-life care and a bereavement service for up to five years after a child has passed away. Jessie May head of

fundraising Julian Withers said: “We are thoroughly looking forward to this fun event and we cannot wait to see everyone dressed up and ready to run. “The funds raised will go towards continuing our care of the local children and their families who need us.” He added: “We are dedicated to helping our families for the long run. Jessie May is almost

entirely reliant on community support, so we are incredibly grateful to all the organisers, sponsors and participants for their help this year.” For more information on the Saltford Santa Dash and Mini Santa Dash, and to register, visit http://saltfordsantadash.webs. com/ For more information about the work of Jessie May, visit www.jessiemay.org.uk

ON THE BEAT

‘ with PC James Evans

here did the summer go? Nights are drawing in and already and the crime figures are starting to rise, which happens every year at around this time. My concern at the moment is the rise in burglaries locally. With no real pattern in time or locations, it’s a difficult one to plot out and combat. I would suggest that everyone checks their home security and considers others, whether that be a friend, family member or neighbour. Start with the basics: if you have a house alarm make sure it is working and that the alarm box is clean and visible. Make sure any security lights are working and lock any side gates. Speak to your neighbours so that you can keep an eye on each other’s properties

Social media offences are becoming more prevalent again and the majority of these offences get raised by our schools. This form of bullying is fast becoming a major drain on resources for both the schools and the police.

and report anything that appears out of place. If you need any advice then please make contact via the neighbourhood pages on the Avon and Somerset force website and we’ll get a PCSO to visit you and see how they can help. If you have no access to the internet then either call 101 or pop into the Keynsham police centre in Ashmead Road in Keynsham where the receptionist will be able to inform us. Alternatively keep an eye out for one of our beat surgeries advertised locally. Thefts from motor vehicles are also on the rise. At the moment the trend seems to be to target vans, with the main focus being stealing the tools inside the rear. The

crime figures spiked when a large number of vehicles were targeted at the Chocolate Quarter but these offences are happening all over the local area, day and night. If you have expensive tools in your vans I suggest you remove them overnight. Also it’s a good idea to mark tools with something that makes them identifiable to you and others. This can be a painted mark or a postcode – just something that makes them identifiable as yours. Quite often we recover tools and are unable to return them to the owners due to no identifiable marks. Social media offences are becoming more prevalent again and the majority of these offences get raised by our schools. This

form of bullying is fast becoming a major drain on resources for both the schools and the police. If you have children and you don’t know what Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are then you really should be learning. If you ask your child what they are doing when they go out, then you should be asking what they are doing on social media. Take an interest and learn, I had cause to investigate a phone this month with the parents of a suspect who were embarrassed, shocked and disgusted by what was on the phone. A simple bit of monitoring would have prevented the offences and the need for police involvement. On a lighter note, Keynsham has a number of local events coming up, all of which draw the community together, from the various firework displays to the Santa Dash in Saltford. The neighbourhood police team will be trying to attend as many of these as possible so if you see us out and about, please stop us for a chat.

The procession, the Salvation Army band and funfair rides will all be returning for this year’s Keynsham Winter Festival

Wintry woodland theme for festival fun Woodland creatures and a touch of fairy magic will help to bring the theme for this year’s Keynsham Winter Festival to life. Many activities at this year’s event, which takes place on Friday, November 24, will be inspired by the theme A Winter’s Tale – including a hunt for woodland creatures hidden in shop windows in the town centre and a procession of youngsters wearing animal masks, fairy wands and wings made in a series of craft workshops. They will be joined in the procession, which begins at 6.15pm outside St John’s Church, by stilt-walkers, woodland fairies from Keyford School of Dance, Squadron 2386 Air Cadets marching band, Enchante Baton Twirlers, Brownies, the town crier and, of course, Father Christmas. As the procession makes its way along the High Street to a new site for the main stage – behind the library off Temple Street – the Christmas lights will be switched on by the winner of this year’s colouring competition, held by Keynsham Town Council. Live entertainment on the main stage will include performances by choirs from St John’s Primary School, Keynsham Brass Band, Enchante

Baton Twirlers and Keynsham Light Opera Group while in The Space Keyford School of Dance, Lucy Ryan, Phoenix Keynsham Youth Theatre and Punch and Judy take to the stage. Outside in Temple Street, the High Street and Market Walk, there will be a big wheel, the Scouts’ climbing wall, funfair stalls, a helter skelter, community stalls and music from the Salvation Army brass band and an old-fashioned musical organ. Meanwhile, several venues will be opening their doors, including: Victoria Methodist Church with stalls, refreshments, carol singing and a performance by Key Voices; the Key Centre with family games and activities; Keynsham Baptist Church with crafts and refreshments; St John’s Church with stalls, activities and a performance by the church’s choir; and the Fear Hall with a craft fair. The Winter Festival Planning Committee will be handing out programmes on Saturday, November 11, at Keynsham Farmers’ Market. The programme will also be available from Keynsham Town Council’s office at 15-17 Temple Street and other locations around the town from Monday, November 13.

Vote to help sow seeds for nursery garden

A new nursery in Keynsham is bidding for up to £5,000 to transform a piece of unused land into a thriving allotment plot complete with chickens. Broadlands Bears is opening at Broadlands Academy this month for youngsters aged from two to five, and staff are hoping to provide an outdoor space to nurture the children’s interest in gardening, growing food and the great outdoors. As part of the scheme, a wildlife trail with playhouse and outdoor stage would also be created in the nursery’s garden area. To bring the plan to fruition, the nursery now needs funding for materials, seeds, soil, raised beds and tools, as well as expert help to construct the trail, playhouse and stage. Broadlands Bears has now applied to the Aviva Community Fund for a grant, which will be awarded to projects around the

country that earn the most public votes in an online poll. A spokesperson said: “The academy has already dedicated time and resources to create a wonderful inside environment for children to enjoy by converting an existing building. However, we would like to develop a spectacular outside space for the children that also has a positive impact on the wider community. The outside space attached to the nursery

building has amazing potential to be very special but we need help to develop the area.” As well as the youngsters who attend the nursery, there will be plenty of benefits for the wider community too as part of the plan. Fresh vegetables, fruit and eggs from the plot will be donated to Keynsham Foodbank, which has a base at the school, while the chickens will be adopted from a caged hen rescue centre and given a second chance at a free-range life. Meanwhile, the plot will be tended by community helpers who would like to enjoy their hobby while socialising. For the wildlife trail and its buildings, the nursery would draw on the skills of members of the Somerdale Shed community group and local tradespeople while young people at Broadlands Academy and other local schools could gain basic skills and work experience

on the project. Broadlands Bears’ spokesperson said: “The project will have a huge impact on the community at various levels from the very young to the elderly. The project will increase the wellbeing of the nursery children, young people at the academy, young people who want to learn vocational skills and people who want to combat loneliness by undertaking their hobbies in a social environment. “In the long term the allotment will provide sustainable fresh produce for local people in need of support from the foodbank and help young people understand social responsibility to help and support others.” To support the scheme, visit https://community-fund.aviva. co.uk/voting/project/view/174577 to register and cast your 10 votes. Scouts strike gold with highest award

Congratulations to James and Emma of Keynsham’s Frome Troop and Chew Troop respectively who have both achieved their Chief Scout’s Gold Award. This is the highest award in the Scout section – they had to complete nine Challenge Awards plus any six activity or staged activity badges and the award can take up to four years to achieve. One of the Challenge Awards is the Expedition Challenge Award, where Scouts go on an expedition or exploration over two days. It’s a great opportunity for Scouts to develop their skills in planning and navigation. It also helps to prepare them for great adventures in Explorers, like doing their Explorer Belt. The Chief Scout’s Gold Award is a great foundation to move forward with and both should be exceedingly proud.

‘Selfless’ volunteer Freya wins honour A student who regularly spends her spare time helping young people at a Keynsham charity has been honoured by her college. Freya Game, a second year health and social care student, received the Young Person’s Service in the Community Award, sponsored by the Rotary Club, at Bath College’s Celebrating Success Awards ceremony at the Guildhall in Bath. Freya, who volunteers with Keynsham and District Mencap Society, Time to Share and for social services, was one of more than 30 students nominated by their tutors in recognition of their achievements. Freya said: “I just like helping people, it’s really enjoyable. You’re doing something for them, to help improve their lives, but it also makes you feel good to

be doing something at the same time.” Hayley Hayward-Boyle, student participation officer at Bath College, said: “Freya volunteers for social services providing respite care for a nineyear-old boy with severe autism on a weekly basis. “In addition, she volunteers as a befriender for Time to Share, befriending a five-year-old boy with ADHD and foetal alcohol syndrome, taking him out to different places. “Freya also volunteers every Saturday for Keynsham Mencap group, providing fun activities and trips for children aged five to 18 with learning disabilities. “She gives opportunities to many young people in a selfless and caring manner, and is a great example of students volunteering to help

Fun and games at a festive fundraiser A Keynsham primary school is inviting everyone to join the festive fun at its Christmas fair next month, meeting Santa, grabbing some gifts and perhaps winning top prize in the “Super Raffle”. St John’s Primary School will be offering a range of stalls, games, crafts, face painting, a barbecue and a Santa’s grotto experience with gift and photo among many other activities on Saturday, December 2, from noon until 2pm. Once again local businesses have given generously to a raffle, which has a first prize of £75, and tickets are 50p. Behind the fun is some serious fundraising by the PTA, which says previous events have helped pay for a pottery kiln, playground equipment, a commemorative bench in memory of former pupil Ben Pocock and much more. Access to the fair is via the top gate in Charlton Park. For raffle ticket pre-orders, contact the PTA chair at liokaiser@hotmail.com or text 07714 149275.

Crossing adds up, say residents The case for a second pedestrian crossing on the Wellsway is “overwhelming”, say residents who have carried out a survey of morning rush-hour traffic. A total of 2,600 vehicles and 69 pedestrians were counted at the spot where Steel Mills footpath meets Wellsway, opposite Rock Hill Estate, during a two-and-a-half-hour period on September 26. The figures support calls for a new crossing, which were turned down two years ago by Bath and North East Somerset Council as the site did not meet Highways’ criteria, say residents Andy Wait, Hal MacFie and Adrian Ellis. Of the 45 pedestrians crossing the road, 16 had to wait longer than 20 seconds for a gap in traffic while many waited up to 60 seconds. The survey also noted a number of the pedestrians using the route were Wellsway School and IKB Academy pupils. Mr Wait said a crossing at

the case for this crossing is now overwhelming.” The existing zebra crossing on the Wellsway is located near the junction of Limekilns Close, towards the junction with Bath Hill.

KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

This month’s picture contains plenty of history! It was taken in about 1921 and the viewpoint is easily identified by the weir on the left and the Drill Hall in the background. In the centre are the sluice-gates controlling the flow to the waterwheels of the Colour Mill, which are behind the wall on the right; the mill ground ochre for making dyes until the early 1940s. Behind is a row of cottages, which were damp and at risk of flooding; they were later used as offices for the mill. Prominent on the left is a thatched haystack, as at that time the slope that now leads up to the gates of the Memorial Park was still farmland. All the buildings became derelict in the 1940s and were demolished in about 1951 when the park was created.

Can you help name my old classmates?

I am indebted to my old school friend Chris Pollock for finding this old picture. It was taken in 1969 at Castle County Primary School in Dunster Road, now called Castle Primary School in Newlands Road! It is the Reception class (Class One) whose teacher was Miss Pugh, who married a couple of years later and became Mrs Webber. There was a system in

place at the time called “Rising Fives” where the pupils due to start school for the first time in September went in for part of the term nearest their fifth birthday. So, there is a mixture of five- and six-year olds in the picture, including three sets of brothers, myself included, who were only a school year younger than our elders. We are all in our 50s now, some with children and grandchildren of our own. I can remember other teachers: Mr Fitzgeorge and Mr Parry (headmasters), Mrs Gates, Miss Fish, Mrs Thompson,

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Broadmead before the shops At last month’s meeting of the society, more than 100 members and visitors heard Bristol historian Mike Hooper describe the development of the Broadmead shopping area. Mike brought a huge selection of photographs; he started with those showing the destruction wrought by the Blitz then showed the area as it used to be, followed by the post-war rebuilding. The overwhelming impression was of the character and variety of businesses and premises that were not bombed but were swept away in order to construct the straightline frontages and concrete facades of the 1950s and 1960s replacements. Later in the talk he also illustrated some of the cramped and squalid courts of housing that were squeezed behind some of the old shops – no doubt their occupants were pleased to see the demolition ball.

The tollhouse at the Two-Headed Man junction was built in 1827 by the Bath Turnpike Trust; below left, the original Shell advert by John Reynolds; the modern representation, below right

The Two-Headed Man

Major roadworks under way at the Two-Headed Man junction between Burnett and Marksbury give a reason for looking into the distinctive name. Most readers will have noticed the image on the back wall of the toll house as they move away after sitting at the traffic lights, but the story behind it is not so well-known. In 1928 Shell created a slogan – “That’s Shell – that is” – to accompany a series of advertising drawings by Rex Whistler that showed speeding cars and astonished pedestrians. A later image by John Reynolds showed a roadworker with his shovel. This had a second head added following a suggestion by a member of

the public, who sent a modified drawing to Shell and received two guineas for his efforts. The doubleheaded image was very successful and the slogan was changed to “That’s Shell – that was”, which Shell used for the next 20 years. Presumably the advertisement was displayed at the site and was particularly appropriate as drivers approached the main road. Gradually the name became

attached to the location and it is to the credit of successive owners that the artwork has been maintained in very much the original style. Long may it survive! The tollhouse itself was built in 1827 by the Bath Turnpike Trust as one of several on the road from Bath to Farrington Gurney.

Time for a talk

The society’s next Monday evening

meeting on November 20 will featured an illustrated talk, with a topic yet to be decided. The meeting will be at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome but the number of seats is limited and priority will be given to society members. For details of the society’s full talks programme, visit www. keysalthist.org.uk

Gold and more for home’s new gardens

Residents, staff and volunteers at a Keynsham retirement home are celebrating scoring a hat trick in this year’s Keynsham in Bloom awards. The new gardens at Abbeyfield’s house in Westbourne Avenue received not one but three accolades at the presentation evening held in October. Dozens of groups and individuals were presented with prizes at the ceremony, which followed Keynsham’s gold award in the South West in Bloom’s Portman Cup competition – read more on Page 34. The Abbeyfield garden, which has taken shape over spring and summer, won gold in the Keynsham in Bloom Community Group category, Level 4 in the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood South West in Bloom Awards and third place out of 70 entries in the Keynsham in Bloom Bike Trail. Manager of Abbeyfield

Volunteers Sylvia and Tony Kirby, residents Cynthia Barrett and Julie Steib, house manager Charlene Fleck, volunteer Wendy Coe, trustee and volunteer Sue Hopkins and chief executive Frances Stretton House, Charlene Fleck, said: “We couldn’t have done this without the hard work of our fabulous residents, volunteers and team members. As a house, we’re so lucky to have this kind

of support. Rightly so, the garden was a big focus this year and everyone involved should feel very proud. “Our bike from this summer’s Keynsham in Bloom bike trail is

still looking fantastic with a colourful autumn display. We do hope people will still come by to have a look and we are very happy to show them around the gardens too.”

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

E

very other day there’s another news story about how the air we breathe is killing us. Last week the World Health Organisation released a report that said globally, air pollution kills at least nine million people and costs trillions of dollars every year. There are at least 300 deaths in Bristol each year attributable to air pollution, and pollution levels are often at their highest levels outside schools and nurseries. The Government is moving – slowly – to tackle the issue. It plans to ban diesel and petrol vehicle sales by 2040. But for many that’s too little too late, amounting to 6,900 avoidable deaths in Bristol alone. Children living in areas of high air pollution often develop asthma, and their lung capacity can become restricted for life, leading to severe respiratory diseases by the time they’re in early middle age. Other diseases linked to air pollution include pneumonia, angina, heart attacks, strokes and even dementia. Polluted air

Cycling more is one way we can individually help to clean up our air breathed by pregnant women increases the risk of babies being born with low birth weights, which itself can cause health problems. It’s not an easy – or cheap – problem to solve. Charges on

the most polluting cars impact overly on poorer people and small business owners. But solve it we must, otherwise the health burden will cripple the NHS. The Government needs to act more quickly to transition people

away from petrol and diesel cars. Electric cars are proving that they can perform as well as traditional vehicles, and the technology is improving rapidly, with carmakers investing millions, because they know the writing’s on the wall for fossil fuels. Keynsham is growing fast, and there will soon be even more traffic on our roads. To tackle increasing levels of air pollution in our town, we all need to get out of our cars, and make shorter journeys on foot or by bike. B&NES Council needs to create cycle lanes and footpaths from the new developments and existing residential areas to the town centre and schools. It needs to invest in efficient and frequent public transport to get commuters out of their cars, and dedicated car parking spaces for car club vehicles. An increase in charging points for electric vehicles would encourage more nonpolluting cars in our town. All these measures can work to clean up our air, and make Keynsham a healthier place to live and work.

Follow trail to celebrate local crafts

by Ros Anstey Everyone is invited to come along and help Cam Valley Arts Trail artists celebrate creativity in the area by visiting one of the venues at this year’s fifth anniversary arts trail. It's a free community event, which takes place across the Cam Valley on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 5, when more than 40 artists will be showcasing and selling their original and handcrafted work Group representative Alison ter Haar said: “You will be able to see, and buy, the work of these artists and many more at our November Arts Trail, which will be held in the villages of Timsbury, Temple Cloud, Clutton, High Littleton, Farrington Gurney and Paulton. “Brochures are already out, which can help you find out more.” Meanwhile, Cam Valley Arts Trail members have said a big thank you to the organisers of

Taste of Timsbury, where Cam Valley Arts offered a taste of what’s to come at this month’s Arts Trail Taste of Timsbury for what they felt was a fantastic day recently held at the Conygre Hall. Mrs ter Haar said: “They even laid on the sunshine. There were so many stalls, apart from our own, and crowds of people throughout the day having a fantastic time and so many local producers showcasing their products.

“It was a truly superb event, which is now in its second year. “Cam Valley Arts displayed work from 14 of our members including paintings, cards, calligraphy, textiles, ceramics, wood and willow.” If you cannot find one of the group’s brochures, you can find out more by going to www. camvalleyartstrail.co.uk

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

More than 100 step up for Children in Need

F

antastic is the only word to describe the response to Keynsham Walkers are Welcome Countryfile Ramble. We joined forces with many groups around the country to arrange a walk in aid of Children in Need. A total of 106 people turned up, along with children and dogs, to set off from the Memorial Park in almost perfect walking conditions. With a first aider, an official photographer, a walk leader, a back marker and six marshals, the group was very well organised for the numbers involved. We were using one of four walks devised by the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society, which took us out of the park, along the banks of the River Avon to the Lock & Weir public house where a welcome stop was planned. Suitably refreshed we headed up hill, past Hanham Court, Cleeve Woods and back to

Dates for the diary

The route took walkers along the River Avon and past Hanham Court Keynsham via Londonderry Wharf. Although we passed through three fields with cattle, all went smoothly and it was a very happy band of walkers that arrived at the destination four miles and three

and a half hours later. The best news was that we raised £740 for the BBC Children in Need appeal. As we said at the beginning, a fantastic day out for everyone.

l Our next walk is on Sunday, November 19. We are walking back from Pensford, so we have arranged transport from the Fox and Hounds car park at 10am. Please let Jane know if you are intending to participate on 07810 223875, so we can arrange the necessary minibus l Our December walk is our annual festive wreath-making walk, including mulled wine and mince pies. This starts at 10am on Saturday, December 9, from the Memorial Park café

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Triple celebration as Keynsham

‘Unique’, ‘a stroke of genius’ , ‘a day to remember’ – these were all comments from the impressed South West in Bloom judges, who have awarded Keynsham no less than three awards in this year’s contest. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James reports

I

t’s a been a real delight writing this month’s update, as we are once again celebrating success in the RHS South West in Bloom competition, where we were awarded gold in the Portman Cup for the fourth consecutive year. Both myself and Dawn Drury, deputy town clerk, attended the prestigious awards ceremony, which was held at The Imperial Hotel in Torquay. Dawn and I were delighted to receive the award on behalf of Keynsham from Lord and Lady Fellowes. We were even more delighted when it was announced that we had won not one but two additional awards. Judges Richard Taylor and Bob Sweet had nominated us for two discretionary awards. Keynsham Railway Station won the Wheatley Trophy for an outstanding landscaped

commercial area and our Great Floral Bike Trail was awarded the West Country TV Cup. Lord and Lady Fellowes both commented on how wonderful they thought the bike trail was. In their feedback, the judges noted “that Keynsham is a bustling Bloom town which has been boosted by some unique highlights this year. The 72 florally decorated bikes throughout the town have been a stroke of genius, which will undoubtedly be followed by others. The project at the station has transformed the entrance to the town and of course the floral decorated Dial a Ride bus is the only one of its type! The people we met on the tour demonstrated the passions which Bloom generates and made it a day to remember”. On Horticultural Achievement – one of the criteria for judging – the judges complimented us

on how the whole community was brightened up by the floral bikes. They were impressed with how everyone from residents to Scouts, businesses and community groups had taken part and embraced the trail. The judges commented on our award-winning Memorial Park and how the barrier planters at the front of the park were so majestic. The residents of Old Vicarage Green were complimented on the excellent work that they carry out within their community. The new flower tubs that form part of the new one-way system were also seen as an area of achievement. In terms of young people, the contribution by both St Keyna School and the Beavers was impressive, said the judges, as the Scouts not only look after their own grounds, but also maintain the raised planters in Ashton Way car park.

Temple Court and Wild About Flowers were seen as a good example of how businesses can contribute to the horticultural element of the competition. Although the judges appreciate how difficult it is sometimes to get businesses involved, they would like to see more shops and commercial premises become involved by providing their own floral displays or planters. On Environmental Responsibility and Heritage, the judges were particularly impressed with how the former Fry’s factory site is being developed. They complimented Erica Davies and her team of Wombles and commented on how clean and litter-free the town was. On Community Participation, Community at 67 was seen as a revelation by the judges and we were complimented on the number of community groups Celebrating Keynsham Station’s trophy win, from left, Ian Reynolds, from B&NES, who volunteered on the project; Kath Reynolds from Keynsham in Bloom; KIB chair Denise James; Edward Stevens from Keynsham station ticket office; Heather Cullimore from Severnside Rail Partnership; Pete Mellen, B&NES Community Challenges supervisor; and art coordinator Faye Joines

Keynsham in Bloom Garden Competition

More than 72 certificates were handed out in our Keynsham in Bloom Garden Competition awards night at Scout HQ. This year saw a number of new entries from across Keynsham. More than 80 people attended the awards, which commenced with the prize-giving for our children’s “garden in a container” competition. We also presented RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood awards to 16 community groups in recognition of the volunteer work that they carry out. A big thank you to Jon Wheatley, chair of RHS South West in Bloom, and Councillor Clive Fricker, chair of Keynsham Town Council, who presented the certificates and awards. It

was a wonderful evening and lovely to see so many children and residents joining the celebrations. Jon Wheatley congratulated us all on our wonderful success and then issued Keynsham in Bloom a challenge: he would like to see Keynsham as a national RHS Britain in Bloom finalist within the next three years – not too much pressure there, Jon! As a RHS National judge myself, I know first-hand the standards that are expected in order to become a national finalist. However, what I consider to be just as important is for Keynsham to win our category in the Portman Cup. Over the last couple of years we have gone from strength to strength, and are seen as one of the stronger Bloom groups in our area. I see no reason, with some fine tuning over the next year or so, that Keynsham couldn’t actually win the category. How wonderful that

Movember man talk could save your life

M

ake time for man talk! That’s the advice being given to men as part of the national Movember campaign – the month that spotlights men’s health issues. A Movember survey showed that while 70 per cent of men say their friends could rely on them for support, only 48 per cent say that they would rely on their friends! In other words, men are happy to listen to other people’s problems but not so happy to talk about their own. Professor Hashim Hashim, a world-renowned consultant urological surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital, said: “The key to successful treatment is down to men facing up to the fact that they might have a problem and seeking medical help as soon as possible. “It is well known that men tend to keep things bottled up when it comes to medical issues but that really is the worst thing they can do. Growing a moustache in

support of Movember is great but it’s when the talking starts that we know we are getting somewhere.” Prostate cancer is the commonest type of cancer in men, with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year, claiming approximately 10,500 lives. However, it’s not just cancerrelated conditions that affect a man’s prostate. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local pub. The condition known as benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on their quality of life. As the prostate enlarges it can cause pressure on the bladder,

causing a variety of symptoms including: having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder leading to having to urinate more frequently (especially at night), subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed by anyone. “Surgery can be fraught with side effects – bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems – while tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems,” said Professor Hashim. There is, however, a revolutionary day-case technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief to help them empty their bladders better with improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of

tablets. It involves no blood loss or ‘cutting’ and takes 10 to 15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, opening the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Prof Hashim “'It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPE(H) – only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable,” he continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital in the same day. To find out more information about men’s prostate health and the treatment options available, please book onto our complimentary patient information evening with Professor Hashim Hashim on Thursday, November 30, at 7pm. Call 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com to book your place.

n NEWS IN BRIEF

Glitz and glamour at home’s tea dance

Local beat manager PC Samantha Kayser, Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and residents at Saltford's 2017 Neighbourhood Watch meeting held in the Avon Room, Saltford Hall, on Wednesday, October 18. Photo: Phil Harding.

Residents and staff at a Saltford care home held an anniversary celebration with added glitz and glamour. Kingfisher Lodge, a Barchester home, hosted a Tie and Tiara tea dance to mark 25 years since Barchester Healthcare was founded. Residents, visitors and staff were presented with tiaras to wear and staff went all out in their glitzy costumes as they served cucumber sandwiches and scones. Lesley Cole, general manager at Kingfisher Lodge, said: “This has been a huge amount of fun and our Tie and Tiara tea dance was a great way to bring people together in celebration. I want to thank everyone who helped make the day amazing.” One resident at the home said: “The tea dance was so much fun and it was lovely watching residents and staff dancing and singing along with the entertainment.”

Wildlife hunt reveals health of River Chew

K

eynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT) enjoyed an excellent afternoon in early October, splashing around in the river Chew, writes chairman Dave Sage. Fun though it was, it had a serious scientific point: surveying the river for invertebrates (and the odd fish) to establish the quality of the water. In total, 25 members, ranging in age from three to 70, carried out a standard technique called kick sampling, disturbing the river bed and catching the animals in a net downstream. Ably assisted by three former Wellsway school Green Team members – Jamie, Tom and Dan – samples were carried onto the bank for a thorough search and identification of animals found. The catch included bullhead fish (in addition to two minnows caught by two young fishermen nearby), stonefly nymphs, various species of mayfly nymph and

both cased and uncased caddis fly larvae. All of these biological indicator species, in addition to a good range of other species found,

point to continuing healthy water quality, with low levels of organic pollution, which would cause these to die out or diminish in numbers. Special thanks go to Rita Andrews for her support and expertise in helping to identify the animals (and taking the photos!), and to Liz Wintle for helping to set up and clear up all the apparatus. The results, once analysed, will be sent to John Aldridge to add to his comprehensive annual Keynsham wildlife report, and onto BRERC, the Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre. Members also enjoyed our first Friday talk of the season,

on the rare horseshoe bats of Woodchester House, in Gloucestershire. This will be followed up with a visit there in July 2018. Our next event is on Friday, November 10. It is a talk by the National Trust on how it manages its estates for the benefit of wildlife and increasing biodiversity. As usual, it is at the Baptist Church Hall, Keynsham High Street, from 7.30-9.30pm. Non-members are very welcome – pay on the door – and there are goodies, secondhand books, refreshments and food for wildlife for sale. Indeed, something for everyone!

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

I Let You Go by Clare MacKintosh Clare MacKintosh drew on her experiences working for the Oxford CID to write this gripping novel. An only child is killed on a dark, wet November afternoon in a hit-and-run accident. DI Ray Stevens and his CID colleagues have tried to locate the driver of the vehicle, and are frustrated when the order comes to drop the case. The mother cannot be located and they assume she has left after the devastation of losing her child so tragically. Despite no arrests being forthcoming from the small amount of evidence, they feel duty-bound to catch the culprit, if only to help the child’s mother feel that justice has been done. Meanwhile, Jenna is living in anonymity. She is renting a cottage in a remote area of Wales. She is reluctant to make friends with the local people, but after a while relaxes into the seasonal life of a small seaside resort. She distracts from the pain of her past by starting up an online business, selling photographic art. The story takes you from the frustrated CID staff and the impact the case makes on their professional and private lives to Jenna and her efforts to rebuild her life after tragedy. The twists and turns of the plot will keep you page-turning long after you intended to put the book down. Reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library supervisor

End of Watch by Stephen King This is the third book by Stephen King featuring the irascible investigator Bill Hodges, who now heads up an agency called Finders Keepers with his partner Holly Gibney. They are called to a possible murder/suicide and are intrigued by the letter Z written at the scene. Then, as other similar cases crop up, Hodges is horrified to discover evidence that points to his old adversary, Brady Hartsfield, the notorious “Mercedes Killer” (from the first book Mr Mercedes). But Brady is hospitalised, in a supposed coma! Now it appears Brady Hartsfield has lethal new powers. And he's planning revenge not just on Hodges and his friends, but on the entire city. Can Hodges and Holly defeat “Mr Mercedes” in time? Read and find out!

Adult Non-Fiction

Lone Rider by Elspeth Beard In 1982, at just 23 years of age, famous architect Elspeth Beard decided to ride her BMW around the world. Armed with only a Haynes manual on How to Fix a Bike, few possessions and almost no money, she steps out and braves the open roads of the world. She became the first British woman to do so. Sometimes when someone who is not a

writer by trade shares with the reader moments from their life, we can feel the experience as more authentic, honest and genuine. We follow Elspeth, 30 years after the journey of her youth, who describes with a sharp eye and a brave analysis her own experience in an intimate portrait of her life and of the world in the 1980s. Children’s Fiction

The Eleventh Orphan by Joan Lingard It is January 1, 1900, when the kindly Constable O’Dowd brings 11-year-old Elfie to the doors of the Pig and Whistle in London’s Stoke Newington. The owners of the public house are Ma and Pa Bigsby and for years they have been looking after orphans, giving children the chance of a safe upbringing, with moral and educational support. Elfie’s mother died soon after her birth, and since then she had been living a harsh life at orphanages and, more recently, as a street urchin. Her only belongings are a bag and its contents, which she protects at all costs. This bag holds clues to her past and one of them is a painting of the Pig and Whistle. Intrigued, Pa Bigsby tries to help Elfie solve the mystery of her background using the bag’s contents as clues. The story has a good mystery base and gives an insight into the plight of orphaned children at the turn of the last century. A good read for children and adults alike.

Milly-Molly-Mandy’s autumn by Joyce Lankester Brisley Join Milly-MollyMandy in this classic tale of her adventures now that autumn has reached the village. It is a blustery autumn, as Milly-MollyMandy finds as she tends her small garden beside her cottage home, where she finds an interesting plant. This plant grows huge and is just right for a special autumn celebration. Then join her and her friends for Guy Fawkes Night and attend a wedding that ends with a bang. These are classic tales which are a delight to read.

THE BIG PICTURE

Film review with Harrison Thorne

Heart-pounding action and gorgeous visuals Blade Runner 2049 (15) ven days after I exited the cinema after watching Blade Runner 2049 I couldn’t stop thinking about the stunning dystopian version of Los Angeles that director Dennis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) has expertly realised in the sequel to the 1982 cult classic. Set 30 years after the original, 2049 introduces a new Blade Runner by the name of K (Ryan Gosling), who is tasked with hunting down renegade “replicants” (AI who resemble and act like humans) and eventually uncovers a conspiracy that unites him with former Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). The primary feature shown in the marketing for this film is the jaw-dropping cinematography and visual effects, both of which effortlessly create a sci-fi world that feels real – from the dystopian streets of Los Angeles to the sandy ruins of San Diego, the world created retains the feel of the one

E

realised in Blade Runner but still carries a sense of originality. Coming from his Academy Award nomination for La La Land, Ryan Gosling shines as Officer K. Harrison Ford is also great, being given more freedom for emotion than he was in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, proving that he still fully understands his character even 25 years later. However, possibly the best thing about this film is the reluctance to become a generic

action franchise like so many others hbefore it, instead staying true to its roots as a mystery thriller with only a handful of short action sequences which are done better than most other blockbusters. In conclusion Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sequels ever produced with a complex narrative, superb performances and eyewatering cinematography, all of which combine to make one of the best films of 2017 so far.  4.5/5

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field Last month saw Keynsham Town FC’s First Team record three wins, a draw and a defeat to move them into fifth position in the Toolstation Western League Division One.

The last day of September saw the Ks make the long trip to Dorset club Sherborne Town and come away with all three points with a comfortable 5-2 win. Sam Duggan scored in the first minute and Kyle Box made it two right on halftime. The game was effectively over 20 minutes into the second half, as further goals from Matt Brown, Craig Wilson

and skipper Jason Adams saw the Ks romp to a five-goal lead. Two late goals from the hosts did little to dampen Keynsham’s spirits. The following Tuesday saw a night of high drama at Crown Fields, as the Ks beat Devizes Town 4-2 in a feisty encounter. Cam Shorney curled in a superb 25-yard free-kick in the seventh minute, and a fine solo effort from Matt Curnock 10 minutes later made it 2-0. However, two lapses of concentration at the back saw Devizes make it all square at halftime. The second period was a tight affair until the 70th minute, when Sam Duggan headed home from a corner. Substitute Kyle Box then made sure of the points in the last minute. The Western League’s “Groundhop” weekend, where four matches are chosen to be played back-to-back on a Saturday and fans travel to the South West from all over the world, saw Keynsham make an early start with a 10.45am kick-off away to Welton Rovers.

Scott Saunders, left, receives the Player of the Month award for September from assistant manager Russ Holt Although Matt Curnock gave the visitors an early lead, the Ks struggled to master the terrible weather conditions and they slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat. A break of two and a half weeks followed before newly promoted local rivals Bristol Telephones made their first ever visit to Crown Fields. The Ks started on the front foot and dominated the opening 20 minutes without making their superiority count. They were then made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal when a freak own goal gave the ’Phones the lead right on halftime.

Keynsham’s heads didn’t drop though, and they soon equalised with another trademark Cam Shorney free-kick on 53 minutes. Sub Kyle Box gave the Ks the lead in the 70th minute after great work by Matt Brown, and the game was made safe with a late Sam Duggan header to make it 3-1. Manager John Allen said: “It was a fantastic performance and win against local rivals Bristol Telephones. This was in front of another great crowd of 162, on a night when Bristol City played against Crystal Palace. This is very impressive and appreciated by the players, management

n SPORT and officials at the club. So the fact that we put in our best performance of the season in front of them made the win even sweeter! “I'm glad we now have a good run of fixtures, so we can hopefully gain some momentum and consistency to our performances and results. The lack of games has been a little frustrating at times for us all but, as I have said before, the lads are certainly working very hard on the training ground to keep their fitness levels high, and this certainly paid dividends in our last two home games with late winners as the opposition tired. “I would also like to thank Malcolm, Ade and Jules who behind the scenes put in a lot of work to support both myself, Russ, Readie, Rich and the players.” The month ended with a 1-1 draw at home to Radstock Town. The Ks never really got going in this one, and it took several breathtaking saves by keeper Matt Dunk to earn a point. After

the visitors took the lead on 43 minutes with a scrappy goal, Keynsham had to wait until the 73rd minute when Kyle Box ended a fine move with his seventh goal of the season. Off the pitch, Scott Saunders won the club’s September Player of the Month award. John Allen said: “It gives both myself, Russ and Mark pleasure to announce that Scott ‘Sauce’ Saunders is September's winner. We feel Scott played consistently well

in a number of positions during September, influencing the game in central midfield and at centre half. He also chipped in with two goals against Bovey Tracey and Roman Glass St George, adding to the one he got at Cheddar. He is always a reliable performer who has settled in well to the club both on and off the pitch.” The Ks Reserves lost their only Somerset County League game in October, but progressed in both the League

Cup and Somerset Senior Cup competitions. The A Team continued their fine form with two Bristol and Suburban League Division Two wins and a cup victory, as they sit proudly at the top of the table. Meanwhile the Under-18s had a win and a defeat in their two matches last month. n SPORT Keynsham Rugby Club opened their new season having achieved promotion in the Tribute South West 1 league with a home fixture against newly relegated Launceston RFC, writes our correspondent. They started strongly despite losing a soft early try and quickly achieved their first league point by scoring four tries through skipper Jack Weston (20), Rueben Edwards and Toby Williams. Thereafter they let things slip and allowed the visitors to come away with a 29-41 win. Keynsham needed to learn the hard way that things were not going to be easy in this league. The following week the team travelled to Gloucester-based long-term rivals – and often bête noir side – Matson RFC. In appalling conditions it was a close-fought affair. Alas, all Keynsham managed was a try from Jack Weston, narrowly missing out on what would have been a deserved losing bonus point. Final score 16-5. Newent RFC (Glos) were

November, 2017

New season sees Keynsham the next visitors to the Crown Field at Keynsham and started like the proverbial train, tearing Keynsham’s midfield defence apart time and time again and it looked like a cricket score was on the cards. They regrouped at 0-13, however, and the pack became dominant, a dominance that was to become increasingly evident and an embarrassment to the visitors late in the game. A try by Jon Pearce and a conversion and penalty by Sam Challenger saw the half time score at 17-13 due to an intercept try from Newent. The second half saw Keynsham pull away for a 29-17 win by means of a penalty try, a try from Jack Weston and a push-over try with a conversion from Challenger. Five more league points were bagged in their next game, away at North Petherton RFC with a 27-30 win in yet another closely fought game – nip and tuck all the way with the lead changing

hands eight times throughout the match. Tries by Weston (2), Tim Coghlan, Gareth Bradnock and Callum Fennell were added to by a conversion and a penalty from Sam Challenger were the reward of a solid team performance where defences were powerful on both sides. Yet another nail-biter was to follow when Okehampton visited Keynsham. It can be

said that Keynsham did not win this one, it was more like Okehampton lost it. Had their place kickers had their aim right they would have cruised to a win – as it was Keynsham edged it 18-17 with tries from Weston and Fennell and two penalties and a conversion by Challenger. Rugby up their game after promotion

was away at Teignmouth. This was not through lack of kicking ability but a game where the boys should have sealed it, but spilt too many chances. A losing bonus point was all they came away with in a game dominated by defences. Jon Pearce and Jack Evans scored tries, Challenger converted one of them in a 17-12 defeat. In the final game of this report Bideford RFC were the visitors on Saturday, October 21. A strong, blustery cross-field wind disrupted both sides’ efforts at flowing rugby, but a close game was enjoyed nevertheless. Keynsham scraped through 17-12 and had tries from Jon Pearce and Gareth Bradnock, Sam Challenger adding two conversions and a penalty. Bideford just managed two tries and a conversion. Keynsham’s defence took the honours for withstanding continuous pressure inside their own 22 for the last 20 minutes of the game. There are also two more

senior sides on the go, the second XV captained by Louis Bush perform in Somerset 1 league and the thirds captained by Chris Bradley are no longer attached to the pyramid league structure, playing friendly matches only on a merit table format. The seconds lie fifth in their table having won three and lost three with a plus 39 aggregate score. The decision to pull out of the league format is proving to be very successful for the thirds, with friendly games providing more fun and enjoyment, being played in better spirits. To give an example, Trowbridge arrived for a game with just seven players, and Keynsham lent them eight or nine as they had loads wanting to play. A great match where more than 100 points were nearly equally shared ensued, and a good bit of skill was on show as well! Just the spirit grass-roots rugby should show. This is just one of many instances already where a game has taken place whereas before

a club would have just ceded the game and stayed at home. l All this without mentioning the junior and mini sections. These two sections of the club run squads of children/youths at each age level – u6, u7, u8, u9, u10, u11, u12 (mini), u13, u14, u15, u16, u17/18 (junior). The minis section has just held a festival where 12 clubs from around the area brought 110 teams of players from u7 to u12; more than 1,200 children in total. The organisation required to pull this into a cohesive enjoyable day is impressive but the club managed it. There are far too many people involved to thank them individually but the organisers pulled together volunteer helpers from all age groups – you couldn’t move for cheesy chips and burgers. l Installation of the new floodlights on the pitches nearest the bypass has finished with just the final touches still awaited;

the first switch-on is imminent. These will alleviate pressure on the training pitch, which gets overused. An opening event is being planned for the lights but details are yet to be finalised. l Sadly, as the club lost a significant sum of money on last year’s event due to competition and people using vantage positions outside the ground instead of paying the ticket price, there will be no firework display hosted by the club this year for the first time in more than 30 years. l Recent winners of the monthly Dennis Cockbaine Lottery (a club fundraiser) were David Hathaway (69) £100, Tony Weadon (16) £50, Andy Harrison (146) £100, Chris Raymond (8) £50, Gaz Deere (106) £100, John Graham (37). l You can keep up to date with the goings-on at the club at their new website, www. keynshamrugby.co.uk

Free-scoring Ladies unbeaten at home October has been another successful month for Keynsham Town Ladies FC, writes our correspondent, gaining victories over Brislington, two against St Nicholas, and progression in the Women’s FA Cup at the expense of St Nicholas, a club who must be relieved to not be facing Keynsham again this season, having also lost in the reverse fixture and the FA Women’s Plate competition. The month started with a visit to Yate Town FC, home of St Nicholas, but after leading 7-0 at the break, Keynsham became strangely subdued in the second half, only adding a further two. Their nine included another five for top scorer Kerry Bartlett, a first for 16-year-old Clarice White, and very rare goals from Jess Osborne and Andreea Alexandru, the latter very much a fluke. Keynsham returned the following Sunday, this time in the FA Cup, but St Nicholas

Striker Katie Cook and new signing Asia Brown (17), right had clearly learnt that “damage limitation” is the only way to counter a free-scoring side, and defended in depth for the entire match. Keynsham finally made the breakthrough on 70 minutes with a fine effort from Miche Munro to run out 1-0 winners. Brislington followed and in an eagerly anticipated “local derby” under lights at the Crown Field, the opponents had the edge before Keynsham’s opener

arrived on 35 minutes. From then on, though, the home side pressed home their upper hand, netting another three for a very satisfying victory. Three days later the club were due to meet Frome Town in the Somerset FA Cup but their opponents withdrew, being unable to raise a side. They probably remembered that Keynsham thrashed them 22-0 in the same competition last season!

The FA Women’s Plate draw, like the FA Cup, matched Keynsham with St Nicholas, and goals from Katie Cook and Carly Bryant gave them a 2-0 lead before excellent saves from Hannah Christer prevented St Nicholas from replying. In the second half, the home side became somewhat complacent, eventually adding late goals on 84 and 90 minutes for a 4-0 victory.

and away The Ladies face a massive test in November with trips to Plymouth and Southampton. Plymouth Argyle, like Keynsham, boast a 100 per cent record in the Premier League South West Division this season, and to avoid defeat would be a great boost to Keynsham’s promotion chances. Due to the bizarre nature of the way the fixtures are compiled, there is actually no first team home match now until Sunday, December 10. Meanwhile, the Development side also face a shortage of home games this month, with Torquay United their only opponents on November 5, before travelling to Marine Academy and Downend Flyers. Keynsham Town Ladies are pleased to announce that their newly refurbished clubhouse is now open for business. Further information is available from secretary Pam Newton on 07739 398383.

Bowls club ends season on a friendly note Keynsham Bowls Club finished the season with a series of friendlies, one of the last being a mixed team match which we narrowly lost against a touring side from Winchmore Hill in London, writes our correspondent. n SPORT Celebrating end of very special season

The final game of the Bristol and District League season saw Frys Bowling Club host Avonvale, writes our correspondent. It was the visitors who held the upper hand for most of the night. Frys were unable to get much going with only Rink 1 able to salvage a final point by earning a draw from the 38-52 loss. Frys finished fifth in the final standings on 92 points with Weston Bath winning the division and Long Ashton earning the second promotion place. Scores: Rink 1: 18-18; Rink 2: 8-15; Rink 3: 12-19; Frys 38-52 Avonvale (1-9). Frys’ season record was as follows: Played: 18; Won: nine; Lost: nine; Shots for: 852; Shots against: 833: Shots difference: 19; Points: 92. Frys Bowling Club brought their centenary year to an end with the annual presentation dinner where the season’s trophies were handed out. The pairs final could not be played

Winners of Frys Bowling Club are presented with their awards at the endof-season presentation evening this year and will be completed in 2018. The finalists for the pairs are Bill Gregory and Pete Rumble playing Jonathan Day and Derek McCaig. The Triples Day in July was another successful day, which saw another close contest with Christopher Day, Mick Funnell and Mary Buck coming runnersup with Jonathan Day, Geoff Kershaw and Pete Rumble winning the competition. The novices saw a final

between Malcolm Hanks and Don Gourd, in which Don won his first singles title. The Len Hardwell Memorial Two Wood once again saw Jonathan Day in the final, but it was Nick Grenfell who took the title. A few days later Nick and Jonathan met in the handicap final. A stunning performance from Jonathan saw him take home another title. The Championship final was played between Stephen Day and Jonathan Day. The game was

played through a prelude to the September storms. As the game continued into the darkness, despite a late comeback it was Jonathan taking home another championship. The presentations marked the end of a special season for Frys, the highlight being a successful match against the Somerset Bowls Executive to mark Frys’ centenary season, a day that will live long in the memory of those who took part.
