Concern over flats plan for police station site Residents' parking and traffic fears DOZENS of people have raised concerns over plans to build flats on the site of Keynsham Police Station. Residents say the proposals from Hawkfield Homes to demolish the police station on Bath Hill and replace it with 26 apartments would increase traffic and cause parking problems. The plans include 43 parking spaces, which locals say would not be enough. The police station in Bath Hill was sold last year for £1.24 million and remaining staff are due to move out soon. Hawkfield Homes originally applied to put 30 apartments on the site but have now Turn to Page 2

Takeover secures Pavilion's future

THE future of Somerdale Pavilion has been secured with the formation of a new trust. The Somerdale Pavilion Trust has taken over and staff have transferred from Aquaterra, which used to run the facility. The St Monica Trust, which already operates the Chocolate Quarter, has created the SPT as a separate charity to oversee the day-to-day running of the Somerdale Pavilion site. It now intends to consult users about how best to operate the pavilion “in a way that preserves the services and facilities currently enjoyed by its members”. David Williams, chief executive of the St Monica Trust, said: “The St Monica Trust is fully committed to securing the future of the Somerdale Pavilion for generations to come. We consider the pavilion site to be a pivotal resource within the Keynsham community and a vital complement to the services that are provided in the Chocolate Quarter retirement community. “Just as we did when developing the services at the Chocolate Quarter, we will be keen to meet with and listen to the views of members and the local community regarding the long-term future of the pavilion.” Over the last five years, Mondelez International have made a multi-million-

The St Monica Trust has formed a separate charity to oversee the Pavilion's day-to-day running pound investment in redeveloping the former Fry Club, including a new sports pavilion and floodlit football pitches. Tom Gingell, from Mondelez International, said: “We believe the St Monica Trust and Somerdale Pavilion Trust are well-suited to taking over the successful running of the Somerdale Pavilion site, given their charitable status, their experience in integrating services for the wider community into their retirement villages and their continuing relationship with the people of

Keynsham through the development of the Chocolate Quarter. "Consequently, we have worked with all of the parties involved, including members, to agree a long-term plan that works for everyone and makes sure there will be a thriving legacy at Somerdale. “We have also agreed a covenant to ensure that for the next 50 years, the Pavilion site is maintained and to ensure the facility continues to make a contribution to the local community.”

Fry's fire

by Keri Beckingham

A FIRE engine commissioned to service the former Fry’s chocolate factory has returned to Keynsham after 37 years. The fire engine, a 1965 Morris FGK40, served the factory under Chief Fire Officer Des Ryan GIFE from 1965 to 1982. In 1968 it helped pump water from different parts of the factory during the Great Flood, which allowed production to keep running, and its crew also provided support to the affected residents of Keynsham and Saltford. When the vehicle was decommissioned in 1982 it was sold to the Patrick Motor Collection in Birmingham, where it stayed before being sold again in 1992. Des Ryan’s sons, Richard and Stephen, spent years tracking it down and found it again in 2003, two years after their father’s death. They kept in contact with the owner, who had preserved it and kept it fully operational. Fast forward to today and the

Hunt for engine comes home at last knifeman fire engine has returned into the ownership of the Ryan family. To mark its return home, it was put on display at Avon Valley Railway’s 1940s weekend on Saturday September 21 alongside the Fry’s Sentinel Steam Engine. Four members of the original Fry’s Fire Brigade - Dennis Salter, Jack Chapman, Max Packer and Terry Seymour - also turned out to see it. Richard said: “The four former members of the original Fry’s Fire Brigade were all emotional and delighted to see the fire engine again. They said it was nice to have a piece of Fry’s history back In Keynsham and they enjoyed talking about the fire engine to visitors at the Avon Valley Railway 1940s weekend. “It is marvellous to finally have the fire engine back in Keynsham and in our possession, especially as our father was so proud of the fire engine and the fire brigade.” The fire engine will be back

A KEYNSHAM man was slashed with a knife when he disturbed a potential burglar at his home. It happened at Willow Walk at about 3pm on Thursday August 29. The householder had gone to his conservatory and saw a man trying the door handle. When he challenged the suspect, the intruder turned and slashed the victim with what appeared to be a Stanley knife. The suspect then jumped over the fence into a neighbour’s garden before running away. He is described as white, about 5ft 4ins, in his 20s and wearing a black cap, grey hooded top and black jogging bottoms. The victim received stitches for a slash wound, not believed life-changing. Much more than Helping people 'just' a receptionist with dementia to follow their faith M y name is Elise and I am a veterinary receptionist. When I tell people I am a receptionist, I know they think I am JUST a receptionist, but I do much more than that. On the surface my job is primarily being the face of Park Road Vets, making appointments and taking payments. However, my job entails so much more. For example: I am the first person that a client speaks to in an emergency. I need to triage on the phone while emotions are high, and direct them to the best possible place – sometimes this is Rosemary Lodge, our 24-hour hospital in Bath. I support the nurses with preparing the pets for their operations, make sure the nurses have everything for a smooth operation and even clean up after. I administrate the Pet Health Club, a direct-debit plan that covers expected routine treatments your pet needs, including vaccinations and flea and worm medication. I text clients when they are behind on their medications and send out vouchers. As you can probably guess, we go through a lot of stock – I make sure we have enough medicines, pet food (and pens!) to get through the next working day. Did you know the suicide rate in the veterinary profession is four times the national average? I am the Wellbeing Champion. I have had training to help with mental-health situations in the workplace. I love the team we have. I see them as more like my family, so I try and make work a calming and enjoyable environment. Since leaving university, I have been a manager of a bookies, worked for an energy company and the NHS. I have been a veterinary receptionist for just over a year, and I am still learning. This has been the only job where I look forward to coming to work and I hope to be doing it for many more years.

AN initiative in Keynsham is hoping those who are living with dementia will be able to attend a shorter church service to follow their faith. A member of St Dunstan's church, Keynsham, Barbara Outhwaite, came up with the idea of providing a 20-minute service on a Sunday afternoon so that Christians, or indeed anyone living with dementia, could attend without committing an hour or so to a full service and any issues that it might cause them. Barbara said: “People living with dementia and older people have never been forgotten by the people of Keynsham and Saltford. Churches Together in Keynsham & Saltford (CTKS) has long had a dedicated team of people who hold Christian services inside the care homes. "What is new in what I am doing is to give dementia sufferers the opportunity to experience a service inside a church.” Supported by CTKS, she reached out to the Keynsham and Saltford Dementia Action Alliance (K&SDAA) for their support and involvement also, and her request was immediately answered. Chairman of K&SDAA Alan Hale said: “Receiving Barbara’s request was great because our

aim is to make Keynsham and Saltford more dementia-friendly and we can only do that with the help of the community - and this church initiative is a positive move." The first service is being held at St Dunstan’s Church on Sunday October 6 at 3pm and will be followed by a tea in the church hall afterwards, sponsored and organised by the K&SDAA. This first service will be a Harvest Festival Thanksgiving service. On Sunday November 3, the second service will be a Remembrance service, and on Sunday December 8 it will be a carol service. Both start at 3pm and will be followed by a tea. While primarily for those living with dementia or any type of memory problem and their carers and families, the services will be open to anyone. For those living with dementia but not regular worshippers, the aim is to give them the experience of being inside a church in an atmosphere of calm and is also supported by Outreach to Older People as part of the ongoing work of CTKS. The church is ideal for this event as it has a good car park, and wheelchair access into the church and has toilet facilities for disabled people in the adjacent church hall.

A KEYNSHAM family were in the spotlight last month after they revealed they were not disclosing whether their child was a girl or a boy. Hobbit Humphrey and Jake England-John use the pronoun ‘they’ for their 17-month-old toddler, Anoush, and dress them in girls' and boys' clothing. The couple spoke on the BBC’s Inside Out West programme about their decision to keep the sex of their baby secret. Hobbit and Jake, who live on a houseboat in Keynsham, said their aim was to challenge unconscious gender bias. They revealed that they did not even tell the child's grandmother until 11 months after the birth. Jake said: “The neutral in gender neutral refers to us trying to behave neutrally towards our child rather than trying to make them neutral.”

Hobbit added: “Eventually, we decided that we wouldn’t tell people whether they were a boy or a girl … in order to create this little bubble for our baby to be who they are.” The couple said they had received a variety of reactions, including some “confused looks from old ladies in the park” but that gradually people had got used to it. They said they wanted Anoush to grow into their own person.

ON THE BEAT

M

any of you will have heard about a couple of very worrying incidents that have happened in Keynsham recently. The first was a series of exposure incidents in the north-east of Keynsham. A female was assaulted in the latest incident that was believed to be linked. Extensive enquiries resulted in a male being arrested and interviewed. The investigation is still ongoing and the suspect has been released under investigation. The second incident of note was an attempted burglary on the Tree’s estate on August 29. An offender was confronted and was reported to have assaulted the informant before running off. Press releases and an e-fit have been released. There are still a number of enquiries and possible suspects to be interviewed about this incident, but if you have any information you can call us on 101, giving the reference number 5219199195. Or if you want to remain anonymous, you can call

with PC James Evans Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Any information you have may be of great use, so please call us. n We have been receiving a number of calls complaining about noisy vehicles in and around Keynsham, from vehicles gathering and playing loud music in Bath Hill car park to nuisance mopeds riding at speed around the town. These are classed as minor road traffic offences which are akin to tinting your number plates, removal of front number plates, failing to display ‘L’ plates and changing any of your obligatory lights for coloured bulbs. These are only a few of the offences being committed regularly. We will be cracking down on these offences,

issuing fixed penalty notices (FPNs) when they are committed. The FPNs range from £30 to £200 and some carry points that will be added to your licence. To avoid falling foul of this, inspect your vehicles regularly and make sure your driver’s licence is in order and up to date. This month I had to deal with a male who believed his driving licence was fine, but it had actually been revoked by the DVLA. This meant that any insurance was invalid, and his vehicle was seized as a consequence of this. It can be an expensive lesson to learn when it could take you minutes to check. n This month we received a report that someone had defecated on the slide in the play park off Claverton Road West in Saltford. I was absolutely appalled to hear this and we are investigating to try to locate the offender for this disgusting act. There can be no excuse to this sort of behaviour and again if you have any information relating to this then please contact us at the Keynsham beat team. n We have served three

Community Protection Notices this week, two relating to anti-social behaviour towards the users of the tennis, football and netball clubs that play at the Chocolate Quarter. They had been receiving verbal abuse and even sprayed with water while playing. We hope these notices will go some way to preventing this sort of behaviour in the future. If not then we can apply for Community Protection Notices that carry a power of arrest if they are breached. We have also issued one of these to a resident of Corston who has been causing problems for his neighbours. Again we hope that this has the desired effect in reducing offences and improving everyone’s quality of life. n This month there was a positive Misuse of Drugs Act warrant that was issued and actioned on Coronation Avenue. The suspect was arrested and interviewed, the items found have been sent for analysis and the suspect has been released under investigation.

Thriller author Kate celebrates double success by Keri Beckingham AN AUTHOR from Keynsham sees her debut novel published this month. Kate Simants is a writer of psychological thrillers and crime fiction and has lived in Keynsham since 2009, following a decade of working in the UK television industry, where she specialised in investigative documentaries, police shows and undercover work. Lock Me In is being published by Harper Collins' One More Chapter. It tells the story of Ellie Power, who has a seemingly normal life - a stable home, a loving boyfriend, a future. However, at night she suffers from a sleep disorder where she becomes angry, unpredictable and violent. Her mother locks her in her bedroom every night, to keep them both safe, but one morning Ellie wakes up horrified to find that the lock on her bedroom door has been smashed from the inside and that she is covered in injuries. But she is unable to remember anything about the night before, and her boyfriend Matt is nowhere to be found… During her time in Keynsham, Kate has met up with Garry Abson (another crime

writer from the town) for five years to read each other's work after they were both shortlisted for a new writers' award called the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger. Speaking about the importance of connecting with other authors locally and her new novel, Kate said: “I do think it's important to have other writers around you when you're doing this for long periods of time or you can go a bit crazy. “Writing can be quite a solitary job so it's good to know other people who understand what it's like. I've built up quite a community of writers online as well - people I'll meet up with a few times a year at writing events like Crimefest in Bristol and the London and Harrogate festivals. “I've contributed several times at the Novel Nights events in Bristol too, and will be reading at the new Noir at the Bar event in Bath. It's great to be invited to read your work to an audience of people you don't know, especially if you're used to only sharing your work with people you know you can rely on to be kind! “Lock Me In has gone through a lot of different edits. I do tend to have some fairly outlandish ideas for plots so I had to listen to a lot of sensible advice from my agent about changing things around before we set about

Kate Simants knows the importance of connecting with other writers getting it published. It's getting some good early reviews but I'm obviously incredibly excited/ nervous about what readers make of it. It's out as an ebook on October 3 and paperback on December 12.” Kate is also celebrating after she recently won the Bath Novel Award with her second, as yet unpublished, book, The Knocks, which is about a Bristol probation officer trying to uncover the truth about a

girl who disappeared from a children's home. The prize is an international competition for unpublished novels, and there were almost 1,400 entrants. She added: “It was a massive boost to have my title read out as the winner. The Knocks has just been sent out to publishers, so I'm refreshing my email a lot to see if anyone wants to buy it.” To find out more about Kate and Lock Me In, visit www.katesimants.co.uk

Staff and volunteers at the not-for-profit post office and library are celebrating a first year of success and looking forward to a bright future SUPPORTERS of Saltford Community Post Office and Library have celebrated the first anniversary of its opening. Members of the management team, the Post Office’s part-time staff members and many of the library’s 70 volunteers marked the occasion. They were joined by representatives of Saltford Community Association and Saltford Parish Council, as well as members of the public. In his speech, chairman David Halton said: “As we look to move into our second year, we are hopeful that we will be able to extend our opening hours to meet demand for a more accessible service both for residents and local businesses. "The management team are currently in conversations to make this a reality by the

end of the year. This would not be possible without the ongoing support of users of the library and post office, so I urge local people to keep coming through the door to support this vital community asset.” Mr Halton thanked everyone who has contributed to making the first year a success and emphasised the key role the library and post office plays within the Saltford community, especially for residents who are unable to travel far to access the

services offered. Mr Halton also thanked the volunteers, without whom the library would not be able to operate, and whose sales of cards and stationery are vital to the sustainability of the community initiative. Saltford Community Library and Post Office is a not-for-profit organisation, and the efforts of the library volunteers and the management team have been recognised through community awards made in the past year.

Bubble Rush is lush! MORE than 800 people took part in the Bristol Bubble Rush in Keynsham in support of the Grand Appeal. The event at Somerdale on September 14 was a foamfilled 5k for people of all ages and abilities. It has already raised £7,000 for the Wallace and Gromit appeal in aid of Bristol Children’s Hospital and donations are still coming in. Suzanne Maverick, fundraising manager at the Grand Appeal said: “This was our first year doing Bubble Rush, and it was absolutely amazing to have the sun shining, and to see such a big crowd out in foamy-force to support Bristol Children’s Hospital. So far, our fantastic fundraisers have raised £7,000, which means we can be there for even more seriously ill young patients and families, when they need us most.” Photos: Tim Maynard

Charity fund to help keep up the good work ORGANISATIONS that improve the lives of older people are being invited to apply to a new fund being launched by the St Monica Trust’s Community Impact Team. The Continuation Fund will award funding up to a maximum of £20,000 to organisations that are already working to improve the lives of individuals aged 55-plus. The aim of the fund is to support organisations within Bristol, South Gloucestershire, BANES and North Somerset to continue doing the good work that they

already do, rather than funding new projects. The St Monica Trust’s director of community impact, Adam Rees, said: “From listening to our partners in the region, it’s getting increasingly hard for them to find funding for existing work, even though there is a clear positive impact on the people and communities that are being helped. “We feel it’s essential that support is available to projects already making a difference and not just to new projects. Let's make forests out of art for festival AMBITIOUS plans are afoot for the biggest art collaboration Keynsham has ever seen. Everyone is invited to take part in the annual Big Draw festival this month and help create an artwork called Autumn Forests. Huge sheets of paper will be pinned to the wall in the Chocolate Quarter on which people can draw. The works will then go on display in Keynsham Library. The event will be free to take part in and no drawing or art experience is necessary. There will be plenty of help on hand in the Art & Pottery Studio. The festival theme this year is Drawn to Life: Creativity and Wellbeing. Joe Tymkow, artist-inresidence at the Chocolate Quarter, said: “The aim is to make this opportunity open to as many people as possible.” Every Saturday people can drop in at the studio between 10am and 2pm and take part. There will be pens, pencils, markers, inks etc available and participants are free to draw anything they would expect or

like to see in a forest - birds, flowers, animals, insects, trees, leaves, fungi, seeds, nuts, vines or even dinosaurs. Anyone who is unable to get to the studio can draw or paint something at home and send or drop it into the Art Studio. Each week the artwork in the library will be replaced with the latest versions, and the existing ones will be taken back to be worked on and added to in the studio. Joe said: “This is very much a free-for-all collaboration. If anyone would like to submit a piece of work but does not want it to be added to or drawn over, I will be creating a scrap book to keep them in, but you must let me know otherwise I will assume it is to be incorporated into the rest of the artwork.” People taking part can share pictures of their artwork on social media using use the hashtags #DrawnInKeynsham and #The_Big_Draw If you would like more information or have any questions, you can email drawninkeynsham@gmail. com

World record for Nicola

QUIZ nights at the Compton Inn in Compton Dando, near Keynsham, have raised money for the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Chris Daubney, a recent patient on the Cheselden Urology Unit at the hospital, received cheques for £700 on behalf of the RUH. The money was partly from quizzes and partly money raised by Chris and his family. Landlord Paul Thomas handed over the money, which will go towards enhancing patient care on the ward. A KEYNSHAM woman has returned from the world powerlifting championships in Florida with a gold medal and a world record. Nicola Burroughs only took up powerlifting this year after previously competing in strongwoman events. She got through the regional qualifier to reach the British championships in Birmingham, where she was placed second in the under-75 kilo class. This earned her a place in the GB team for Florida.

She took first place and achieved a world record for the best total - 422.5 kilos in three lifts: one squat, one bench press and one deadlift. The victory means that Nicola, who trains at Strength and Fitness Academy in Midsomer Norton, will automatically compete in the world championships again next year. “I am already looking forward to it,” she said. “I plan to get stuck in with training even harder to set some new goals for 2020.”

Choir's pop gig to help the homeless

KEYNSHAM’S community choir ChoirJam and their band will perform at a fundraising gig at St John’s Church, Keynsham, this month in support of Help Bristol’s Homeless. The charity, which has been converting shipping containers in Bedminster into accommodation for people who have been living on the streets, caught the attention of the choir’s founder Emma Hutchinson. She said: “I became aware of Help Bristol’s Homeless, led by Jasper Thompson, and the more I learned about their work, the more I wanted to do something to help. “The charity’s priority is to get homeless people off the streets and into safe, stable and comfortable accommodation. “We are a community choir who love singing all things pop, so the logical answer was to put on a show and donate all profits to HBH.” Emma, a singer, songwriter and musician, started ChoirJam in 2011, and now every week 150 ‘Jammers’ come along. The concert on Saturday October 5 is billed as a fun, lively and upbeat night with toe-tapping tunes from artists such as George Ezra, Elton John, Paloma Faith, Kylie, Ed Sheeran, Will Young, Tina Turner and Abba. Doors to the gig and the bar open at 7pm, with ChoirJam’s first set beginning at 7.30. Zoradi Tucker, of Help Bristol’s Homeless, explains more about the charity: I initially started volunteering with HBH in 2017 to help convert a bus donated by First Bus Bristol. Since then I have become a trustee and have seen first-hand what a difference HBH is making. The bus project alone has provided 435 male and 200 female beds for the night since January 2019 – that’s 635 people off the streets and into the safety of a converted, warm and homely bus. That is just one

The choir attracts 150 'Jammers' to its weekly sessions and is now preparing for a charity show After the interval there will be an opportunity to hear HBH trustee, Zoradi Tucker, speak about the second phase of the charity’s work, which aims to raise £300,000. ChoirJam will then perform a second set, accompanied by the CJ Band, from 8.50pm. The concert ends at 9.40pm, with a retiring

collection for Help Bristol’s Homeless. Tickets cost £8 in advance, available from www.choirjam.co.uk or £10 on the door (subject to availability). U18s are £3. For more information about ChoirJam, contact Emma Hutchinson on 07793 983040 or email emma@choirjam.co.uk

Repair café can mend it for free A NEW monthly Repair Café has launched in Keynsham, offering local residents the chance to fix their broken stuff for free and enjoy a cup of tea at the same time. The Repair Café movement started in the Netherlands in 2009, and the international neighbourhood initiative promotes repair as an alternative to throwing things out. The Keynsham branch follows similar groups in Horfield, Fishponds, St George, St Paul’s, Bedminster, Stockwood and Bath. During the two-hour session at Keynsham Baptist Church, volunteers are on hand to help with simple electrics, electronics, wood working, general tinkering and glueing. In addition, there is also support with textiles such as machine and hand sewing including leather, knitting, crotchet and darning, alongside guitar restringing and tuning, drum tightening, phone apps and

high street jewellery. The first Keynsham Repair Café took place on Saturday September 14, where 27 items were fixed, four people were given advice and asked to return next time with spares, and two people were referred to the Somerdale Shed for a #MakeAndMend session. Future events are set to take place on Saturday October 12 and Saturday November 9 from 10am–12pm. If you would like to go along and bring something to be fixed, please contact the organisers to let them know so their repairers

Thanks for making a difference RESIDENTS of Tintagel Close in Keynsham were the winners of the inaugural Curo Community Award, receiving a cheque for £500 to spend on further neighbourhood initiatives. Sharon Tucker, chair of Tintagel Close residents’ association, was presented with the award by Curo chair Liz Potter at the housing association’s annual Residents’ Conference. The community was nominated for the positive difference they have made in their neighbourhoods. Curo chief executive Victor da Cunha said: “We know that many people do amazing work in their community without the recognition they deserve. We wanted to highlight some of the residents who are often unrecognised community champions - people who make their communities better places to live.”

“We also hope that in launching these Curo Community Awards, others will be inspired to get involved, or even perhaps nominate others, in years to come.”

Curo can help residents to get more involved in their community, for example by setting up residents’ associations or organising litter picks. The housing association has grants

Chance to have your say on future of social care funding MEETINGS are being held in Keynsham this month for people to have a say about social care funding. Bath & North East Somerset Council is proposing to introduce a framework to make sure that residents with eligible needs are allocated payments fairly and in a way that is easy to understand. A ten-week consultation began on September 24 and continues until December 3 to seek views about the proposals before the framework is finalised. Drop-in sessions will take place on October 7 from 6pm-7.30pm and October 22 from 6.30pm8pm at the Community Space in Market Walk, where the public can give their views. Residents can also comment online or via a hard copy of the consultation document, available from council one-stop shops and libraries. Currently, about 2,100 adults in Bath and North East Somerset are in need of social care services, both in care homes and at home. This is a chargeable service. Although there are clear guidelines for councils to follow, some charging decisions are at the

council’s discretion and it is these that are being examined. Councillor Rob Appleyard, cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “It is really important our residents are treated fairly and they receive the right service for their eligible needs. “With this proposed framework, we aim to ensure that we provide a transparent and consistent process and allocate our resources fairly to meet those needs. It is also important to ensure we are compliant with current legislation. “We welcome people’s views on the proposals, so I am encouraging as many people as possible to respond to the consultation, including individuals with care needs, carers and their families, agencies, social workers and anyone who has an interest in adult and social care across Bath and North East Somerset.” The online survey is available at www.bathnes. gov.uk/cas-charging-consultation. Full information on the Care and Support Charging and Financial Assessment Framework, including proposed changes, can also be found through the web link or by emailing CAFAConsultation@bathnes.gov.uk

Four cheers for junior winners! THE summer of 2019 was a big success for the juniors of Saltford Golf Club. Four young members completed a 72-hole challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and three players secured Saltford the title of England Golf Junior Champion Club in a competition at Woodhall Spa. The charity event on August 8 started at 5.30am and finished just before darkness fell. The lads each walked more than 20 miles and together raised more than £1,000, smashing their £400 target. Junior captain Oliver Parkinson said the team had been unsure they would be able to complete the challenge, having previously found 36 holes quite tough. However, Oliver and team mates Sam, Harry and Alex got off to a great start by completing their first 18 holes in 2 hours and

40 mins, and managed each of the remaining rounds in three hours. “We played some of the best golf we have ever played,” said Oliver. “Parents, organisers and other juniors all followed to witness the final round, which made it that more special and rewarding for us. "We are very grateful for all the support we received and would like to thank everyone who donated.” Five days later, three players - Dewi John, Dylan John and Alex Georgiou - were triumphant in the England Junior Club Championship at the home of England Golf. They posted a winning score of 149 points based on the best two cards from three over two rounds, playing on the Hotchkin course. Parkstone Golf Club were second with 148 points and Kendleshire Golf Club third with These four young golfers raised more than £1,000 for charity 145 points.

The team at Wellsway Multi Academy Trust's catering arm Zest did their bit to feed youngsters

Team helps hungry children WELLSWAY Multi Academy Trust played a major part in making sure children across Bristol did not go hungry during the summer holidays. The Trust’s catering arm, Zest, oversaw the making of 19,000 packed lunches in six weeks to feed youngsters in the city. The initiative was led by Zest’s catering operations manager Claire Mansri and Sir Bernard Lovell Academy’s catering manager Bev Smith. They took delivery of food from the charity FareShare South West and supervised teams of volunteers who made the sandwiches and assembled about 500 lunch bags a day in the SBL kitchens. Many of the volunteers came from big city firms, organised by the charity Feeding Bristol, but a number of people connected to the Trust and its schools also got involved. “We provided a total of 87 volunteer days - 63 adults and 24 children,” said Mrs Mansri. Volunteers collected the meals daily and distributed them around the city to children at

playschemes and at activity sessions in libraries, community centres and parks. FareShare South West also supplied food at many holiday clubs so children and adults could cook meals, meaning that about 50,000 children and their families benefited. The project was carried out despite the fact that Bristol’s bid to the Government for funding was unsuccessful. Mrs Mansri said: “It was felt that this scheme was needed and should go ahead, so more than £100,000 was raised through crowdfunding. We at Zest already had a partnership with FareShare - a food redistribution charity - so we decided to work with them to support Feeding Bristol. “They played their part by accessing surplus food and working with suppliers to get donations and we offered our kitchens and expertise.” Tim Howes, business director of Wellsway MAT, said: “We are very proud of Zest for stepping up to support this vital service for families in need in Bristol. Well done to Claire and Bev and to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help children."

SUMMER teas at St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando have raised £2,224 towards its upkeep. One of the organisers, Mrs Jenny Davis, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who willingly gave their time, serving teas, baking amazing cakes and washing tablecloths etc. ” Pictured are Elizabeth Penny and Sylvia Gilder serving cups of tea at St Mary's.

Fungi look fabulous, but

F

Scarlet elf cups are among the 1.5 million species of fungi to be found in the UK

or the first time in a few years, Keynsham’s group of the Avon Wildlife Trust has a field outing in October to find, identify and even possibly taste fungi, writes chairman Dave Sage. The outing is to Dolebury warren on the Mendips, guided by Trust mycologist (= fungus expert) Joe McSorley, who will make sure we only taste edible fungi! What exactly are fungi? They are organisms which belong to a large and diverse kingdom with around 1.5 million species, including over 3,000 species of mushrooms and toadstools in the UK. As well as some of the more characteristic field mushrooms and woodland toadstools, it includes microorganisms such as yeasts and moulds. The mushrooms and toadstools with which we are familiar are not part of the “normal” fungus but large reproductive structures which produce and disperse millions of microscopic spores, usually distributed by the wind or by water. The fungus itself consists of large numbers of microscopic threads called hyphae, massed together in a mycelium, which spreads underground in the soil. The Earth’s largest living organism is a honey mushroom due to its mycelium which covers 965 hectares in the US!

Contrary to popular belief, fungi are not classified as plants because they lack the chlorophyll and chloroplasts required to absorb light energy and make their own food by photosynthesis. Instead they feed in much the same way as most animals; they are heterotrophic. Put simply, this means that they secrete digestive enzymes onto their food, which break it down into soluble products, which are then absorbed into the hyphae by diffusion. The importance of this process cannot be overstated; because fungi feed in this way on dead and decaying organic matter – a process known as saprotrophic nutrition – it makes them nature’s recyclers, rotting down dead plants and animals, and animal wastes. This removes vast amounts of material from the environment and releases essential minerals for the growth of plants, enabling their life cycles to continue. In addition, many fungi grow a mycorrhizal network around plant roots. It's like a second root system giving them greater access to water and minerals. Unfortunately, not all fungi are so beneficial. Some are not saprotrophic but parasitic, growing in the tissues of plants, causing disease and even death of the infected individuals. Two of the most notorious are those that cause Dutch elm disease and ash dieback disease. Equally, a

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group small number of toadstools are poisonous, a few fatally so (14 species in the UK), arguably the most dangerous being the aptly named “death cap” toadstool, Amanita phalloides, all the more so because of its superficial resemblance to the common, edible field mushroom. This is why it is so important not to eat fungi without expert supervision. Wild mushrooms and toadstools are becoming more widespread in Britain because warmer weather has increased the number of plants on which they can grow. Some of the field and woodland fungi we are hoping to see are Chanterelles, Fly agarics, Morels, Waxcaps, Wood blewits, Scarlet elf cups, Jelly ear mushrooms and Puffballs. n Two days before the outing, our first indoor talk is entitled ‘Galapagos - Islands that Changed

n KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Time to get planting for a bright winter

A

S we sadly say goodbye to our long, warm summer days, our attention turns to our winter planting schemes. You will soon see In Bloom volunteers on the streets of Keynsham, at the railway station and in our local estate shopping areas refreshing the tubs and troughs with our colourful winter plants. If you would like to join our group of volunteers, please contact us by emailing the In Bloom Secretary Dawn Drury at deputytownclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk or by phoning 01225 395951. The In Bloom Committee are also busy planning our tree decorations for the St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival from December 6-8 and we need the help from our local knitters and craft people. Calling all knitters - we need knitted poinsettias and Christmas roses to make garlands to decorate our tree. If you are not a knitter, why not help us by making bright

glittery pom pom baubles? All donations of flowers or pom poms will be gratefully received and can be dropped off to the B&NES Civic Centre reception, in a bag marked for the attention of ‘Dawn – Keynsham In Bloom’. Finally, October is an exciting month for In Bloom, as we receive the results of Keynsham’s entry into the South West In Bloom competition. Thanks to everyone who took part this year. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that we retain our Gold status. We will keep you posted on the result, which we will receive at the awards presentation event in Newquay on October 11. We also have our own special local award presentation evening on October 17, when we present certificates and trophies to our local residents, community groups, schools, businesses, allotment holders and places of worship.

Council's new CEO takes charge A NEW chief executive starts work at Bath & North East Somerset Council this month. Will Godfrey, pictured, replaces Ashley Ayre, who retired after 13 years of service to the council. Will has worked at a senior level with UK and Welsh governments. Before joining Newport City Council he was a strategic director at Bristol City Council and chief executive of East Hampshire District Council. He has also worked extensively at a regional level, having played a leading role in negotiating devolution deals in both South East Wales and the West of England. Councillor Dine Romero, council leader, said: “Will’s experience in strategic financial

management, organisational change and regeneration fits well with the new administration’s ambitions, as well as the challenges we face over the next few years. “He will have direct responsibility for ensuring the council rises to the leadership challenge of responding to the climate emergency and ensure the authority leads by example in its activities, plus taking a lead role in influencing partners. “As we welcome Will to his new role, I want to personally thank our outgoing chief executive Ashley Ayre, who we all will miss. Ashley has skilfully overseen significant organisational and budget changes and greatly contributed to the success, stability and wellbeing of our area. We wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Quality time with children for dads WHO Let the Dads Out has embarked on its sixth year in Keynsham. The group enables dads, grandads and male carers and their children to spend time together, have fun and mix with others. Sessions take place at St Francis Church Hall, Warwick Road, every second Saturday of the month and St John’s Church Hall every third Saturday. Both sessions start at 10am and finish at 11.30. Organiser John Wilkinson said: “Dads often lose out in playing with their children as they grow up. "It’s also an excuse for mums to get rid of the dads and children and have a quiet morning at home!” Who Let the Dads Out is a part of a national project aimed at supporting fathers and children. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Lisa Loveridge Pastoral Care Coordinator, The Chocolate Quarter

On days when I’ve been in a lot of pain, I’ve felt hopeless at the idea of not getting better. Also on those days, I’ve really appreciated being alive and feeling the wind or the sun on my face.

‘W

elcome Hopalong!’ I’m Lisa and I offer spiritual care to residents, of all faiths and none, at the Chocolate Quarter, in both the care home, Charterhouse, and in the retirement apartments. A year ago, I fell over playing football on a rainy afternoon and damaged my right knee. I’ve been hobbling around ever since, despite surgery, physio and a lot of alternative therapies. Hence the somewhat unpolitically-correct comment of a colleague upon my return to work, ‘Welcome Hopalong’. I’ve been deeply touched by the kindness and concern of many people during this time. Some who would not normally talk to me, perhaps because they have different spiritual beliefs, have made a special effort to seek me

out and see how I am. I think I’ve learned to relate better to the frustration of not being able to do, or being much slower at doing, what I previously took for granted. On days when I’ve been in a lot of pain, I’ve felt hopeless at the idea of not getting better. Also on those days, I’ve really appreciated being alive and feeling the wind or the sun on my face. Even though life at its best can be unpredictable, it seems to be more so now, with not knowing until the last minute if I’ll be able to go places. As someone who used to have a full diary, that can be disheartening. Care of my body and doing basic tasks take up much more of my life these days. So, what keeps me going? The kindness and support of family, friends and everyone I meet

at work. Taking the opportunity of a slower pace of life to learn new things and to grow as a person, through meditation, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, and reading and through being creative. Trying to accept my new situation and being thankful for the many blessings in my life. Doing my best to improve my physical condition as much as possible by walking and swimming and using alternative therapies. I’ve also learned to build rest into my daily life in a way that I didn’t before. Underneath it all is the belief that this experience is to prepare me for something else, perhaps to enable me to empathise with other people better, to learn how to receive and to be more patient. I trust that ‘all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well’ (Mother Julian of Norwich).

EYNSHAM Walkers are Welcome will again enter the popular ramble organised by BBC Children in Need. The nature programme Countryfile spearheads the event, with walks organised throughout the country and four of their presenters leading walks at various locations. We are organising our own ramble, which will take place on Sunday October 27, starting from the Memorial Park cafe at 10am. It will be a seven-mile stroll around the beautiful countryside, taking in Burnett and Compton Dando, where we shall have a refreshment stop. It will be open to everybody, including children and dogs, which must be kept under control during the entire walk, as we shall be crossing fields that contain livestock. There will also be some hilly sections and stiles to clamber over. This is the second time we have entered this event and have been staggered by the response. We raised £700 each time towards the charity. This year we aim to do even better, with the help of the general public. If you want to walk, you can just turn up on the day or join our team on the BBC Children in Need Countryfile Ramble website. As last year, walkers can make a donation in a sealed envelope at the start of the walk, or get sponsorship from their family and friends So come on everybody - don your Pudsey costumes and join in the fun. nother good turnout of 34 people set of from the Memorial Park cafe for the six-mile circular walk to Bitton, Upton Cheyney, Swineford and back to Keynsham. With the sun shining, the weather was perfect as we headed off towards Bitton following the Monarchs Way. Crossing over the main road, we headed up the slight incline skirting Upton Cheyney. Here we stopped for the panoramic views to the south. Unfortunately our timing was wrong as we had a 15-minute wait for the The Swan to open for our refreshment break.

Thanking the staff for their efficient service, we were soon heading back to Keynsham, where everyone disbanded at various points, please with what was a lovely walk. Leading the walk will be Derek and Vanessa Sunday October 27 BBC Children in Need Countryfile Ramble (see details above).

Cyclists go above and beyond MORE than 50 cyclists have cycled from Bristol to Paris – raising over £119,000 for Bristol’s hospitals. The annual challenge was raising money for Above & Beyond, the charity for University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. A total of 53 cyclists took on the challenge this year, cycling 470km from Bristol to the centre of Paris. Many of the cyclists taking part have a personal connection to the hospitals, including Tracey Arthur, a nurse at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC), and Simon Law, a former Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) patient. There was also a team of riders from Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC), as well as teams from businesses including Brean Sands Holiday Resort and Coventry Building Society. After round one, Keynsham went into round two in seventh position, round two saw them move up to sixth, securing the final spot in the ‘A’ final, which was a huge achievement for an amateur not-for-profit swimming club. “Fantastic job. You all should be super proud - you were all amazing - with brilliant swims, great team spirit, big smiles and loud cheering,” praised prelim head coach Vicki Golledge-Pitt. Avon House Dental Practice, which has been treating local families for over 50 years, has had a refurbishment and expanded into the High Street premises below to create a new reception area and surgery. He said: “We do our best to encourage everyone, young or old, to have regular dental examinations and maintain good oral health because we consider regular check-ups to be an excellent preventative measure to dental problems. MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Understanding hate crime

L

AST month, along with Avon Fire & Rescue, we opened our doors to your emergency services for our annual open day. Thankfully, the weather was kind to us and local people enjoyed displays from Avon and Somerset’s Police Dog, Mounted, Firearms section as well as car cutting and search and rescue demonstrations from Avon Fire and Rescue. It was wonderful to see families getting an insight into all aspects of our emergency services and the people who work so hard to keep our communities safe. This month, I will be working alongside Avon and Somerset Police and partners to increase local people’s understanding of hate crime to mark National Hate Crime Awareness Week (October 12-19). Hate crime can be defined as ‘any criminal offence that is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards

someone based on personal characteristics’. Although hate crime is being spoken about more and more in the media and on social media, there is still confusion about the offence and when to report it and, as a result, underreporting continues to be an issue for victims of hate crime, particularly those related to religion, disability and sexual orientation. Our homes and our streets should be a place free from discrimination, intolerance and prejudice and that’s why it’s important we are firm in our message that hate has no home in our communities. If you’ve been a victim of hate crime you are not alone and please remember that there are people who can help. Only by working together can we show that hate crime will not be tolerated and offenders will be brought to justice. Finally, I wanted to let you

know about the reduction in the number of serious injury collisions on our roads across the area of more than 21 per cent. In 2018, there were 393 incidents where people were killed or seriously injured in collisions on the road compared to 478 in 2014, making Avon and Somerset Police the 9th most improved force for reducing the number of people involved in such collisions. Although one life lost in a collision is one too many, thanks to the dedication of the Roads Policing Unit, our roads are becoming increasingly safer for all road users. The Constabulary help organise and deliver voluntary speeding education courses to approximately 140,000 drivers each year and the unit is also supported by local people through the brilliant 131 Community Speedwatch schemes across the area. Since 2014, I have also ensured that the unit has been

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens better equipped to keep our roads safer by purchasing three enforcement motorcycles to support the nine speed enforcement vans as well as acquiring speed cameras from local authorities. We will continue to work with our local partners to keep our roads safe and educate local people on the dangers of driving unsafely.

Sleep Out to aid street vendors

Scouts clean up to help residents SCOUTS did a good deed in more ways than one when they held a car wash in Saltford. Not only did they wash more than 20 cars at Kingfisher Lodge care centre, they also raise more than £100 towards reality goggles for the residents at the home.

Victoria Hunt, activities co-ordinator of Kingfisher Lodge, said: “The residents at our home had a lot of fun watching the group of young visitors. The Scouts worked so hard. Kingfisher Lodge want to say a massive thank-you.”

REGISTRATION is now open for the Bristol Sleep Out to support Big Issue vendors to take steps away from the streets. The Big Issue Foundation (TBIF) is once again teaming up with other homelessness organisations in Bristol for the annual Bristol Sleep Out on Friday October 11. The event is organised by the Bristol Homeless Forum and will see participants sleep in the grounds of Central Church Bristol. The night will provide a small insight into what it may be like without a safe place to call home and highlight the reality of homelessness in the city. Stephen Robertson, CEO of The Big Issue Foundation, said: “Big Issue vendors face the realities of poverty, exclusion and homelessness on a daily basis. Whether you are coming alone, or with a friend or colleagues, it will be an eyeopening experience that will make a difference to the lives of Big Issue vendors.” The Big Issue Foundation addresses the wider needs of Big Issue vendors, beyond earning an income. It offers support to vendors in order for them to access healthcare, housing, banking and to rebuild their aspirations. Register to join for just £10, with a fundraising target of £200 per person. Book turns spotlight on more remarkable women AN AUTHOR who shone the light on more than 200 remarkable women from Bristol's past is about to release her follow-up book. Jane Duffus was overwhelmed with the success of The Women Who Built Bristol, which was published last year, supported by a series of talks and events across the area. She had been fed up hearing about the great men who shaped the city, noticing that all but one of Bristol's statues were of men, and the one who was female was a goddess – not even a real woman. Her original book set about addressing this disservice in the form of a compendium of 250 great women who contributed to the city's rich history, including reformer Mary Carpenter, suffragette Annie Kenney and haematologist Janet Vaughan. Jane's second volume is released

on October 21 by publisher Tangent and features 250 new stories of inspiring women. The women may have been born in Bristol, died here or lived in the city for a bit, with Jane's only rule that they must no longer be alive. Jane, who lives in Bedminster, said: “I’ve tried to leave no stone unturned in my quest to represent women from all walks of life who contributed something no matter how small - to the Bristol we live in today. “Through researching two volumes of The Women Who Built Bristol, I’ve uncovered the overlooked stories of more than 500 astonishing women.” The Women Who Built Bristol: Volume Two can be purchased from bookshops or directly from the author via https://janeduffus.bigcartel.com/ at the price of £13.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Who remembers Bricktown?

B

y the side of The New Inn, a lane leads into the top of Keynsham Park. Originally, this was known as Pogham's Lane, although the name ceased to be used long ago. As you enter the Park, the area on the left was once the site of the Pound, where stray animals were kept until reclaimed by their owners. In front of you is a flight of steps. These once led to Woodbine Cottages, a row of 11 houses built down the slope from the steps to the river in 1879. On the left, backing onto the main path, was Fairfield Terrace, comprising another 17 properties built at the same time. All the houses were of shoddy construction, built as cheaply as possible by a local builder, Mr Christopher Harvey, in what had been an orchard belonging to a local solicitor. Instead of the local limestone traditionally used for house-building, poor-quality bricks were used and the development became known locally as “Brick Town”. The houses were built for letting and amenities were basic, with the water supplied from wells in the centre front gardens. In October 1894 the local medical officer had reported the houses in Fairfield Terrace as unfit for habitation. His point was underlined when, only a few months later, a great storm

blew away part of the end brickwork, leaving the roofs and ceilings of five or six of the houses exposed. It appears that the landlord did very little to remedy defects and the houses continued to be lived in. Sanitation was basic and it was many years before all the houses were provided with indoor taps. At the Dapps Hill end of Pogham’s Lane, a small Mission Chapel was built to provide some religious education for the children of Brick Town. Despite the poor quality and various reports condemning them, the houses provided homes through to the post-War period, and the photograph on the right shows families in Fairfield Terrace celebrating VE Day in 1945. Both terraces were eventually demolished in 1967 and the land incorporated into the extensions to the Memorial Park. n Monday October 21 sees the start of the society’s new programme of monthly evening talks on subjects relating to local history. They are held at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, starting at 7.30pm, with the first one by Nick McCamley on ‘Saving Britain’s Art Treasures’. A limited number of seats is available for visitors, with admission free if you join the society. For details of the society’s full talks programme, visit www.keysalthist.org.uk Left, the view along the Chew towards Woodbine Cottages - with the Mission Chapel on the right - in 1939. n NEWS from 1st Keynsham Scouts

I

t was a busy month for 1st Keynsham Scouts - packed full of exciting events and a new cohort of young people joining. All of the colonies, packs and troops had plenty to get involved in. Rocky Beaver Colony had a visit from a four-legged friend as Avon and Somerset Police’s dog unit came to Chelwood Scout Campsite to talk about the important work they do. The Beavers really enjoyed finding out more about the unit, and as you can see, the dog also got plenty of attention. Who knows, the visit may have inspired some future canine companions. A total of 25 Cubs from Cotswold Pack also headed to Chelwood for a weekend of camping, getting stuck into fun activities such as bushcraft, crate-stacking and laser tag in the woods, before wide games and singing round the campfire. They even got an opportunity to experience a tremendous thunderstorm during a break in the warm weather, much to the excitement of many Cubs! n Have any unwanted items for the charity bag? Or want to pick up some bargains? We’re looking for donations for the Scout auction and book sale on Saturday November 16. Furniture, bric-a-brac and DVDs are welcome, or pop down on the day to pick up some pre-loved pieces. The ever-popular event will also have a book sale and toy room to explore, as well as hot food and homemade cakes. n We’re also looking forward to the winter fundraising weekend clay pigeon shoot on Saturday and Sunday November 23 & 24 at Chelwood. Everyone is welcome to take part in a two-hour morning or afternoon session – come as an individual or bring along friends and have some fun. It’s only £20 – no experience necessary. Advanced booking is highly recommended. For more details email claypigeon@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or call 07961 394264. n Want to get involved in one of the largest Scout groups in the country? We’re always looking for volunteers and whatever your age or experience, we all have something to offer that can help equip young people with #SkillsForLife. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

I

Jacob Rees-Mogg writes for

Keynsham Voice

n May 2019, Historic England launched a £95 million Government-funded project known as the High Streets Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ). The aim is to find new ways of supporting and regenerating historic high streets in Britain with the help of other partners. Through the programme local councils, community groups and businesses will be offered advice and investment to revive historic buildings, and underused or disused buildings will become ‘creative spaces, offices, shops and housing’. The Government announced that £40 million will be provided by the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport’s Heritage High Street Fund, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Future High Street Fund will fund £52 million. An extra £3 million will be given by the National Lottery Heritage Fund that supports ‘a cultural programme to engage people in the life and history of their high streets’. Applicants were able to apply for grants ranging between £250,000 and £2 million, establishing a fouryear partnership starting in April 2020. Last month, it was announced that 69 towns have been accepted on to the project design phase, including Midsomer Norton and Keynsham. This is a much-needed and well-deserved boon for these towns, which are the heart of local communities and whose historical features will be undoubtedly augmented by the grants. Those responsible for submitting the bids and securing the money should be congratulated for

L

ast year, the Government launched the Help to Save scheme for working people on low incomes, which was pioneered by the Treasury. Help to Save is a Government-backed savings account and the 50% Government bonus provides an excellent opportunity for those in employment on low incomes to become regular savers. It normally takes less than five minutes to submit an application and once verified, constituents can start saving straight away. There are still many people who could benefit from this scheme who are eligible, and applying is easy - just go to gov.uk/helptosave or through the HMRC app. To set up your account you will need your National Insurance Number, bank account details (the bonus and any withdrawals will be paid into this account) and a Government Gateway account. If you do not already have a Government Gateway account you will be able to create one as part of your application. This is a worthwhile plan that, as it is a Government-led initiative, is secure and one that I would encourage constituents to take advantage of. If you need any assistance with or further information about the Help to Save scheme, please do not hesitate to call my office on 0207 219 7118 or email me at jacob.reesmogg.mp@parliament.uk.

n NEWS Have a say on clean air zones

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Climate Strikers give us hope Liz Barling from Transition Keynsham reports on the global climate strike:

T

he young Global Climate Strikers invited adults to show their support by marching in solidarity in towns and cities around the world on Friday September 20 to ask politicians to act on the climate emergency. At the Bristol Climate Strike, I heard inspiring young speakers from the movement and the Youth wing of Extinction Rebellion. I was heartened to hear their passionate commitment to representing the voice of the young and holding our politicians to account. On the march I saw people from across many generations. There were whole families marching together. One young boy, walking past a queue of cars that ground to a halt, approached a car driver and politely requested he turn his engine off. Everyone cheered. I loved the signs and placards that dominated the skyline. One man’s sandwich board said 'Respect existence, or expect resistance.' As we walked past offices, groups of workers spilled out and joined us, and others hung out of their windows offering us support. I walked behind a samba band, and we all danced happily to their tune. I passed some young women wearing beautiful clothes that - according to their sign - were from their own sustainable fashion design business. They were there to raise awareness of the ills of our throw-away

fashion society. One group had fashioned a huge papier mache elephant puppet to highlight worldwide biodiversity loss, and I spotted some academics from the Cabot Institute - if anyone knows the full extent of our carbon emergency, those guys do. As we returned to College Green, I passed the statue of Queen Victoria, now sporting an Extinction Rebellion flag. There were one or two nay-sayer but most of the drivers temporarily inconvenienced were sympathetic to our protest. Lots of marchers chatted to them, many of whom accepted postcards and stickers and displayed them in their car windows. I came away with a real sense of hope. Everyone was friendly and positive. I met lots of interesting people who are all committed to making changes in their own lives and agitating for political change. I felt proud that we adults were lending our support to the youth of the world. Maybe, just maybe, together we can do this! n Photo with permission from Bristol's BYOB Choir

RESIDENTS have just a few days left to give their views on proposals to bring in charges for driving in Bath’s city centre next year. The council is proposing to charge all higher-emission vehicles except private cars and motorbikes. The fee for buses, coaches and HGVs would be £100 a day and vans, taxis, private-hire vehicles and minibuses would be charged £9 a day. Following an outcry over the idea of banning private cars, the council has come up with a scheme it says will exempt them while still improving air quality. The scheme involves restricting the flow of traffic into Queen Square. The council is inviting everyone who lives and works in the area to review the final details of the Clean Air Zone before final plans are agreed with the government. The consultation is open until October 20.

Knitters appeal Keynsham Chicks is appealing for help in knitting chickens for Easter and raising money for the Children's Hospice at Charlton Farm. It would also welcome knitters to knit little Christmas stockings for the group to put chocolates in and sell at Christmas. The Chicks can supply patterns and wool if necessary. n KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB

Cheers for champs AFTER a few days of indifferent weather, the sun shone brightly at Keynsham Bowls Club on the first Sunday in the month as members competed against one another in an attempt to win one of the club’s competitions. Forty-four players took part in a series of singles, pairs and triples, men’s, ladies’ and mixed as the finals of 15 cups were played over all six rinks on the green. The event drew support from the player’s families and friends, which resulted in spectators on all four sides of the green. Our photograph shows the ladies’ and gents’ champions, Lily Springer and Dave Galley. The season finished midway through the month with a final rollup, after which nearly 70 members stayed behind for a fish/sausage and chips supper organised by the social committee. Normally the final game would be on the final Sunday in the month but an early finish will allow the green keeper to carry out work

to help ensure a good playing service in 2020. A number of the team captains have submitted a report on their team’s progress during the year. John Conway, who skippers the A team, advises that in the Thursday Bristol and District League, the men just missed out on promotion to Division 1, finishing in third position behind Yate A and Knowle A. On Saturdays they played in the Division 1 East of the Somerset League, where they were aiming to regain their position in the Premier League, which they lost as a result of relegation in 2018. The team however finished in 4th position, losing one of their matches against Keynsham B, which was somewhat of a surprise. Moving on to the B Team, captain Ian Tweedie was disappointed with the overall performance. In the Bristol and District, only four wins were achieved, which resulted in relegation to Division 4 next

season, when they will come up against the club’s C side. The team fared better in the Somerset League, winning six of 13 fixtures played, including the scalp of the A team, as mentioned above. On Friday evenings, ladies and gents join forces to play in the Mixed Somerset Mixed League under the captaincy of Bob Edge. The team finished in 4th position,

playing 14 different ladies and 17 different gents in the seven matches played. So outside woods have now been put away until next season, whilst some players will play indoors during the winter. Members will however meet up regularly at the monthly coffee mornings and various events arranged by the social committee.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Time's Convert Deborah Harkness Following on from the very popular Discovery of Witches stories, Deborah Harkness has continued with all the wonderful characters in those books, but instead focuses on Matthew’s son – Marcus Whitmore. Marcus has been a vampire for over two hundred year and now finds himself hopeless in love with a human, Phoebe Taylor. She feels the same and now embarks on a different path and decides to become a vampire so she can spend eternity with Marcus. As part of her transformation, Phoebe and Marcus must separate for a number of months, which proves very difficult. So as Marcus sulks around with Matthew and his now wife Diana, he opens up about his past and his first meeting with Matthew Whitmore. So the story moves to the American wars of independence and revolutionary France, and so begins a thrilling adventure. As with all of the Discovery of Witches series, the author has created a magical world with complex characters. This is an unconventional love story and a must for all Deborah Harkness fans.

Crazy Rich Asians

Kevin Kwan as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant

If you haven’t watched the romantic comedy of the year, you can still read the book it’s based on. Rachel Chu, professor at the University of New York, is joining her partner Nicholas Young at his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She can take this opportunity to meet Nick’s family. Rachel doesn’t know she has stepped in the world of Crazy Rich Asians, who can spend millions in a moment. She had nothing to prove, nothing to fear, she just came to enjoy her holidays, but when people team up to get rid of this ‘gold digger’, their creativity can reach the number of zeroes in their bank accounts. I found the book funny and refreshing. It is a pleasure to read a satirical romantic comedy that brings you to Asia instead of the traditional New York setting or a Cornish cottage. Look out for Emilie’s next reviews on the second and third books in this series! Poetry As part of National Poetry Day on October 3, why not try something a little bit different from Keynsham Library?

Season's big finale THE curtain came down on the Bristol and District League season with Frys travelling to Henleaze 'A' - and the home side needing at least 5 points to avoid relegation. The night got off to a perfect start for Henleaze as they pulled out big leads in the opening ends on rinks 1 and 2. Frys were able to counter on rink 3, but with rinks 1 and 2 continuing to drop shots, the gap couldn't be overcome. After halfway, rink 2 started to pull a few shots back and put themselves in positions to quickly close their deficit. However Henleaze skip was able to minimise the threats and preserve the Henleaze lead. Henleaze were able to close out the game from there on, as they picked up 8 points from the 66-41 win. With Long Ashton losing 9-1 against Yate 'A', Henleaze secured their division 2 status, with Long Ashton joining BAC in division 3. Meanwhile at the top, Knowle 'A' won the division with Yate 'A'

joining them in division 1. Two points for Frys saw them drop to 6th in the league. Scores: Rink 1: 9-30; Rink 2: 11-28; Rink 3: 21-8; Frys 41-66, Henleaze 'A' (2-8). n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

Home advantage helps the Ks make an KEYNSHAM Rugby Club made good use of having three successive home matches to start the 2019/2020 Division 1 South West Counties league. Although they have failed to secure any try bonus points for themselves, they have denied the visitors of any losing bonuses and with 12 points are third in the league. This has to be pleasing for the new coaching team of Harvey Skelton and Matt Dew. The 2019/20 league season opened at the Crown Field in almost perfect conditions, Lydney RFC supplying the opposition. The local side fielded three newcomers from previous seasons in the match-day squad, two front-row men – Josh Woodman and Cody Rensberg and winger Sheamus Connolly. The first half was a relatively damp squib, with both sides showing signs of rustiness. The two teams repeatedly lost possession, with the local lads being the worst offenders. By 30 minutes the visitors were six points clear from penalties by their out-half. Five minutes from the end of the half, Keynsham managed to string together some cohesive play and got their reward by means of a Sam Challenger penalty. The half ended with another penalty from Wicks when the Ks were penalised at a ruck. The second half was of a different calibre entirely. The local lads started brightly, with George Warren, Challenger and Jack Cowan all almost reaching the line. A huge surge from a

The Ks made a blistering start against Newton Abbot RFC, their third visiting team of the season scrum eight metres out saw Jack Weston touch down for the first try of the game, Challenger’s conversion just wide, leaving Keynsham one point adrift. Another good spell saw Warren just short again and a subsequent knock-on seemed to have lost an opportunity. A great power scrum saw Lyndey repulsed in disarray however and the ball popped out. Skipper Hayden Johnson was first to react and touch down, Challengers conversion making it 15-9. Out-half Joe Davies was injured and replaced by Dan Moody, Challenger moving to No 10, and two minutes later a double swap saw debutant Rensberg and Jack Josham take over from Phil Harvey and Joe Clements. But Rensberg’s debut was shortlived because, after two impressive drives, he was forced

from the action with a neck injury, Harvey returning. Lydney closed the gap to six with a penalty from Wicks and eight minutes from time Johnson was yellow carded and a torrid last ten looked on the cards. K’s pack and general defence were up to the task; they pinched an opposition lineout, made 15 metres or so with a drive and won a five-metre scrum. Even with the pack being a man light there was little problem for Weston to notch his second try and secure a great win to start the season – Challenger icing the cake – 22pts to 12pts. Keynsham’s defence was up to last season’s standard, the pack eventually got going and the line-out play was streets ahead of what was on show previously - the stealing of eight opposition throws and disruption to others

testify to this. Highlight of the match – Adul Tweazel’s Johnny May-like mid-air retrieval of a box kick! Newent RFC were the next visitors, with the game played in almost sub-Saharan conditions. The local side fielded one newcomer to the squad and welcomed back winger Marlon Dorsett after several seasons at Dings Crusaders, last week’s debutant winger Sheamus Connolly moving to start at fullback. Keynsham went into any early lead when Newent were pinned back 10 metres from their line and John Pearce squirmed over to touchdown, Sam Challenger adding a fine conversion. The Black and Ambers continued to dominate but failed to go further. Joe Davies was injured and had to withdraw. Dan

encouraging start

Moody came on in the centre and Challenger moved to No 10. A bit of slack play gifted the visitors an intercept try which was converted to tie the scores. For the second half, Ryan Harding took over from Phil Harvey and Lewis Bush from Jack Josham. Bush made his impact early on with a storming run. This brought a Keynsham scrum 10 metres out and Jack Weston touched down for a push-over try, Challenger converting. There was immediate Keynsham pressure when Bush and Weston linked up twice in the same surge but progress was marred by a knock-on. The local side should have put the visitors to the sword at this stage but Moody decided to stop short of the line when his momentum would surely have brought a try and Weston fumbled a push-over try. A Newent intercept followed shortly thereafter, and from a chip ahead they just beat the defence, the conversion again levelling the scores. Pressure on the visitors caused them to kick directly to touch and following the lineout Hayden Johnson scored K’s third try, Challenger converting. A bonus try opportunity loomed following drives by Harvey and Bush but was again spurned when there was a knock-on. At the last gasp Keynsham denied Newent a losing bonus point when Challenger slotted a fine drop goal. The final whistle then blew – 24pts to 14. Some satisfaction for the home side, but they may rue this as a lost opportunity, so much possession for so little reward. Keynsham’s man of the match was Josh Woodman, who was up directly against a large fit No 2, ran well, tackled well and threw well. The third visiting team was Newton Abbot RFC, relegated from the league above last season. Again the match was played in really warm conditions. Keynsham came out of the trap running. Bursts by Cieran Chester, on the wing, and Josh Woodman, hooker, brought a second-inute opportunity but a handling error saw the ball go into touch. A power scrum and several mauls just brought a penalty, slotted by Sam Challenger after five minutes. A scrum

infringement allowed Challenger to kick a second penalty. Another chance was spilt on 16 minutes. Phil Harvey retired from the fray with a back spasm and was replaced by Darren Uren. With 32 minutes gone and, somewhat against the run of play, the visitors then scored a try in the right-hand corner and a difficult conversion succeeded to put Newton Abbot ahead. A third penalty from the boot of Challenger completed the scoring in an uninspiring first half. Again, in the second half the local lads started strongly and eventually scored their first try after eight minutes. Following many pack surges, Pearce sniped away and Matt Clifton touched down; Challenger’s conversion taking the score to 14-7. An intercept and strong run by Ollie Conybeare brought play to within seven metres of the visitors’ line, a penalty ensued and Keynsham opted for a scrum, from which Jack Weston notched try no 2; Challenger’s kick just missing. At 21 minutes, a break from 40 metres out saw Marlon Dorset score under the posts, the conversion making it 26-7 and game sealed, just the try bonus to hunt down. The Whites never gave up and were rewarded with a second try, scored by Aaron Brown. The home side did not threaten to get the fourth try required. Once again Keynsham’s defence was of the highest order and they denied a threatening back-line any time or space thus forcing errors. The pack had its usual solid performance. The club second team won their first game away at Chew Valley RFC but narrowly lost their second at home to Crewkerne. There is an abundance of players available to the third team, with younger players coming through from the age-group divisions, and the club is endeavouring to boost the fixture list for these players to give them more game time. The next first team home games are: l October 5, Sidmouth RFC l October 19, Bridgwater and Albion l November 9, Cleeve RFC Other Saturdays see the second XV in action at the Crown Fields.

n KEYNSHAM TOWN

Attacking football produces lots of thrills KEYNSHAM Town ended August with defeat to a strong Helston Athletic team by 1-0 in the Buildbase FA Vase at the AJN Stadium. It was not one of the Town’s best performances, but the Cornish side were worthy winners. Being out of both Vase and FA Cup, some re-arranging of the fixtures was required, so they played Clevedon Town on a Tuesday in early September. The Ks were rampant in the first half, playing some of their best football, and were 3-1 up at the break. Clevedon however made a couple of substitutions in the second period which revitalised them and brought them level at 3-3. With the game on a knife edge and the clock ticking down, the visitors secured the three points with a stoppage-time winner, to the disappointment of the home crowd. The following Saturday they travelled to Bridport, and a battling performance saw them come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3, with Ade Harvey scoring the equaliser in added time. Next followed what looked like a very difficult trip to table-toppers Plymouth Parkway, who had scored 20 goals in their previous six league games. With Keynsham three down early in the second half, many supporters feared the worse and potentially a heavy defeat. However, the Ks’ battling qualities came to the fore once again and they

Action from Keynsham Town’s match against Helston Athletic in the FA Vase replied through Tom Knighton, Cam Ricketts and, with ten minutes left on the clock, Craig Wilson, to earn a well-deserved and, to many, a surprising draw at high-flyers Plymouth. These results leave Keynsham in a fairly comfortable mid-table position as they establish themselves in this higher division. Keynsham’s league programme continues with a tricky home match at the end of September against Tavistock, who have only played three league matches so far but won two of them. That is followed by the following fixtures in October: Wednesday October 9 - Clevedon Town (A), Somerset FA Premier Cup

Tuesday October 15 - Shepton Mallet (H), kick off 7.45 pm Saturday October 19 - Exmouth Town (H), kick off 3.00 pm Tuesday October 22 - Chipping Sodbury (A) Saturday October 26 - Bitton (A), kick off 3 pm Wednesday October 30 - Bishops Lydeard (A), Les Phillips Cup So there are only two home matches to look forward to in October, but with the Ks in goal-scoring mood they are expected to bring plenty of excitement. At the end of the month there is a spicy local derby, just down the road at Bitton, who are challenging again for top spot in the Premier Division.
