FREE EVERY MONTH IN KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD

Major step forward for plan to transform Riverside site A scheme to transform Keynsham’s Riverside site will take a major step forward this month when plans are submitted to the council for consideration. The proposals, which represent a £20 million investment by Bath and North East Somerset Council, will include the long-awaited redevelopment of Keynsham Leisure Centre and the conversion of the vacant office blocks into apartments, with the whole scheme pencilled in for completion by the end of 2018. The plans, which followed two rounds of consultation with residents over the past year, were outlined at a public meeting at The Space on October 3 by Derek Quilter, director of B&NES’ property and project delivery division, where around 100 people gathered to find out how the community’s input had shaped the final scheme. Mr Quilter said B&NES was now in a position to carry out its plans to extend and refurbish the leisure centre as it had acquired the premises above it. As well as improvements Turn to Page 2

From Page 1 to the leisure centre’s current facilities – such as the main pool, which is retaining most of its viewing gallery, and sports hall – a new extension will accommodate a learner pool with gym above, and new studio spaces and soft play area will be added in the former snooker centre. In response to feedback, a sauna will be included as well as a new café with outdoor seating, Mr Quilter said, while concerns over plans for poolside showers and a new changing “village” had led them to revise the scheme to include separate showers and a mixture of changing village and separate male and female changing facilities. The Riverside suite will be demolished to make way for parking as part of the scheme, with activities moving to the new studios in the leisure centre. While there were some voices of dissent, with one in particular raising concerns that the pool would not be to competition standard, there was much support for the revised scheme. Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club secretary David Beament told the meeting the club was “delighted” with the plans and it would be “the best 25-metre pool in Somerset”. Another resident, John Lane, said he felt “reassured” by the presentation that the council had taken notice of the community’s views. Meanwhile, the former offices in the Riverside block will be

completely revamped to accommodate 96 apartments with balconies and roof terraces while the shops and town council offices below will be refurbished. The building would be clad in white, with a darker colour above, while parts of the roof would be lowered to create the terrace gardens and reduce the building’s impact. Initial plans for student accommodation had been dropped following talks with Bath and Bath Spa universities, Mr Quilter said. Concerns were raised, however, over the proposals for parking, with 72 spaces in the lower floor of the Civic Centre car park available to be allocated to residents – meaning there would be less than one per apartment. One local trader urged the team to look again at parking as he said there was already not enough for shoppers and leisure centre visitors, while doubts were also raised about allocating offpeak permits for Bath Hill East car park to residents, with some questioning the security, and another resident saying car owners would park in already congested nearby roads. A potential use put forward for the former Keynsham Fire Station site could include an open market hall, with offices or apartments above, with a team appointed by Avon Fire and Rescue Service currently drawing up plans for the premises. In keeping with the Market Walk development, the Riverside site would be fitted with pho-

for £20m scheme tovoltaic panels on the roof to provide heating, with the aim of making the development carbon neutral. Memories of building work in the town centre are obviously still fresh for many, with Mr Quilter assuring residents the Civic Centre car park would not be used for contractors’ equipment during the build. He said the pool would have to close at some point during the work, but this would be kept to a minimum, while traders would also need to move temporarily to allow for the shops to be revamped. Once the plans are submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council, they will be published at www.bathnes.gov. uk and members of the public will be able to comment during a formal consultation period.

Arrests after man seen on shed roof

Two men have been arrested after an eagle-eyed resident spotted a man on the roof of a shed in the Charlton Road area of Keynsham. Two men were arrested nearby soon after a call was made to police, who were patrolling the area during the night on Saturday, October 1, in response to a number of shed and garage burglaries during the previous week As the officers carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area, another resident told them someone had tried to open their house door before running off. An 18-year-old man of no fixed abode was later charged with attempting to enter an address in Keynsham as a trespasser with intent to steal and was due to face Bath magistrates on Monday, October 3. A second man, aged 20, from Bristol, has been released on police bail pending further

inquiries. Neighbourhood Inspector Adrian Fallows said: “Since Friday, September 23, we’ve had eight reports of burglary from sheds and garages in Keynsham, in which bicycles and power tools have been stolen. “We have been targeting our patrols in the area but I would like to thank the householder whose vigilance and report of suspicious behaviour led to these arrests. This is a good opportunity to remind people to check their home and outbuilding security. We all keep lots of items in our sheds and garages and the security needs to match the value of the property inside.” Police advise residents to ensure gardens have security lighting, sturdy fences and that gates are securely locked and outbuildings have good quality locks and fittings. They advise visiting www. soldsecure.com for details of locks and hinges which have stood up to testing by professional locksmiths.

There is also more information on home security on the police website – www. avonandsomerset.police.uk – including details on how to join or set up a Neighbourhood Watch group.

Election to be held in East Keynsham

town is buried for tomorrow’s residents A snapshot of life in Keynsham in 2016 has been buried at the Market Walk development for a future generation to discover. A time capsule containing photos, local publications and items from many local clubs and groups was placed under a paving slab on the steps below Bonzo Lounge at Bath Hill in a ceremony last month. Keynsham Brass Band played as councillors, representatives from local organisations and members of the public watched town council chairman Lisa O’Brien place the capsule in the ground before Bath and North East Somerset Council chairman Alan Hale unveiled the inscribed slab that now covers it. Mr Hale said it contained many items that represented “the issues, activities and achievements of myriad community groups and individuals who have made a difference to our environment”.

Celebrating the burying of the time capsule, left; Cllr Alan Hale talks to stonemason Iain Cotton, right He added that much had changed in Keynsham as developments created new neighbourhoods and he hoped new residents would enjoy the “special environment” the town offers. The wording on the slab, carved by stonemason Iain Cotton, reads: “Keynsham Time Capsule 2016 – A reflection of our town.”

A time capsule buried in 1964 was retrieved from under the old town hall in 2013 when demolition began to make way for Market Walk. The battered copper box contained documents from Keynsham Urban District Council, newspapers, photos of the town and the development of the new precinct as well as freshly minted coins, an ammonite and portions of a

Roman vase. Today’s time capsule also contains, among many other items, town council minutes, reports and leaflets, newspapers and photos, as well as a time-lapse film of Market Walk being constructed, a film of the Keynsham and Saltford Torch Relay and digital images of items from the 1960s time capsule and of the Frys factory over the years.

What is ‘dry eye’ in dogs? Dry eye is when damage to the tear glands occurs, resulting in too few natural tears being produced. Without tears, the eye becomes very dry and uncomfortable, and makes the eyes more susceptible to infection, conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. Dark pigmentation may also develop due to new blood vessels growing on the surface of the eye. Dry eye is one of the most common eye problems we see as vets, and affects as many as one in 22 dogs. Symptoms of dry eye in dogs can include uncomfortable eyes (your dog may blink excessively, rub its eyes or try to keep its eyes closed), eyes are red and inflamed, discharge from the eyes, dry looking eyes, frequent conjunctivitis, eye infections or corneal ulcers, dark pigment or prominent blood vessels on the surface of the eyes. Dry eye can affect all breeds at any age, however, certain breeds can be more prone to developing the condition, such as Cocker Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Pugs, Yorkshire Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Westies, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels and English Bull Terriers. For the majority of cases,

dry eye is a lifelong condition requiring daily treatment. If left untreated, the dog will experience pain and discomfort, and the disease could lead to permanent blindness. A simple eye ointment is available to treat dry eye, which can increase the amount of tear production, keeping the eyes lubricated and much more comfortable. Diagnosing dry eye is quick and painless so book your dog in to see one of our nurses for a FREE test. You will also be entitled to regular discounts for treatment if you book in before November 30, 2016. Contact Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 9867700 now to book an appointment.

Village celebrates A naval officer who fought the slave trade as well as battles in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars has been honoured in Saltford, the village where he spent his final years. On October 1, MP Jacob Rees-Mogg unveiled a blue plaque commemorating Admiral Benedictus Marwood Kelly at Saltford House, where he lived from 1856 until 1867. Following extensive research into Admiral Kelly’s life by Phil Harding, the chairman of Saltford Environment Group, Saltford Parish Council sought permission from B&NES Council to install the plaque on a gate post at the Grade II-listed property. Admiral Kelly joined the Royal Navy in 1798 at the age of just 13, going on to battle French and Dutch forces before being appointed to command HMS Pheasant in 1818, carrying out anti-slavery patrols off the west coast of Africa. Intercepting Portuguese, French and Spanish vessels suspected of carrying slaves, Admiral Kelly lost a number of men to yellow fever and other members of his crew were murdered as they took one slave ship back to Sierra Leone. During the four years he spent on HMS Pheasant, however, he freed more than 350 slaves and gave compelling evidence to the Court of Sierra Leone on the conditions and treatment he witnessed, describing them as “shocking to every principle of humanity”. His account of the capture of Nova Felicidade, onboard which he discovered 71 people shackled together in cramped holds, was reproduced in several publications calling for an end to the slave trade, including in the prospectus of the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and the Civilization of Africa, whose president was Prince Albert. Admiral Kelly retired from the Navy in 1822 because of poor health, going to London where he became a director of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, director of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and the Bristol and Exeter Railway and managing director of London Bridge station.

Admiral Benedictus Marwood Kelly, top, and the blue plaque commemorating his life at Saltford House He moved to Saltford in 1856, purchasing Saltford House and carrying out extensive renovations, and supporting the local school. He died in 1867 at the age of 82, leaving a large bequest to pay for the building of Kelly School in Tavistock, and the blue plaque at his former home reads “Admiral Benedictus Marwood Kelly (17851867) – Naval officer, liberator of slaves, benefactor.” Unveiling the plaque, Mr Rees-Mogg said: “It is important that local communities celebrate and mark those who once lived among them and had made a contribution to important issues such as the abolition of slavery. “I, therefore, very much welcome the work by Saltford Environment Group and Saltford

‘remarkable’ resident with blue plaque Parish Council to celebrate Admiral Kelly and to revive his memory in his local community and further afield so that more people may learn about his remarkable life.” Saltford Environment Group’s Phil Harding said: “We were astounded to discover what a remarkable life Admiral Kelly had lived, his contribution to help end slavery, and significant support for the education of children in the 19th century. His lifetime of serving his country and helping those in greatest need can inspire others. “We here in Saltford were delighted that Bath and North East Somerset Council gave planning permission for the Admiral’s blue plaque to mark this former resident’s important contribution to a better society.” Find out more about Admiral Kelly at www. saltfordenvironmentgroup.org. uk/history/history010.html

‘People power’ wins rethink over buses Bus users in Keynsham say “people power” pushed First into making a series of concessions in its overhaul of services in the area – although many say the provision still falls short. Changes due to come into effect on September 4 included the loss of the 178 service in the Chandag Estate and of the Park Estate’s 38 service in the evenings and on weekends, which sparked strong public opposition across the town. James Freeman, managing director First West of England, attended a Keynsham Town Council meeting in August where dozens of residents spoke against the proposals and Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale told him First was “isolating significant parts of the community”. But on the day the new timetables were introduced First announced it would be making alterations to its plans following the feedback. A temporary service – the 19B – will maintain a link for the Chandag Estate between 10am and 3pm Monday to Saturday, while a more permanent solution for journeys between Oldland Common and Keynsham is looked at, the firm said, including the possible extension of the B&NES-run 665 service following a public consultation. Meanwhile, the Park Estate is getting an evening shuttle service – the 38A – from Keynsham Church, which will run every half an hour between 8pm and 11pm, Monday to Saturday, for an initial three-month period. The Southmead Hospital to

Keynsham service – route 17 – will continue to run on its original route rather than through Staple Hill until January 2017 to allow for further consultation. Mr Freeman said: “We are pleased that in partnership with the councils we have found a number of ways to better support the communities in those areas. We would like to thank the councils for playing such a constructive role and also those members of the public who provided feedback.” He added: “In view of the points made by many people at the Keynsham public meeting I had a further in-depth look at how many people were going where. First Bus came to the conclusion that there were in fact sufficient users to make an experimental shuttle service worth trying. We moved quickly so that we didn’t have an awkward gap between the old service and the new.” He said he was optimistic about the future of the 38A, with 15 people using it on its first night. He added: “We realise service changes impact people in many ways. We also know how important it is to listen and consider people’s opinions, which is why we work with the councils and engage with the public and bus passengers through a mixture of consultations, customer panels, public and direct meetings, and simply by listening and talking to the people who use our buses. But at the same time, there is a commercial reality that we need bus passengers in sufficient numbers to use our

services, otherwise they become unsustainable.” Meanwhile, discussions have continued online about the changes, with people on the Chandag Estate in particular saying they will still face difficulties in getting around. Writing on Streetlife, one resident said the 19B falls “way short of what we have lost” while another said she has been left “feeling like Cinderella” with the reduced service forcing her to leave Keynsham by 2.30pm or face several hours’ wait for the next bus. Concerns have also been raised about provision on the Park Estate with one resident reporting that a single-decker travelling through the estate at 7.40am was already full by the time it reached the High Street. With the announcement of the 38A service for the Park Estate, B&NES Council has said the twice-nightly service by Bath

Bus Company through the estate, funded by the local authority following First’s announcement it would be withdrawing evening buses, is likely to be discontinued. A statement to Councillor Alan Hale from the public transport department said First had informed them of the change of heart on September 2 and that the council has to give contractors three months’ notice to terminate contracts. The statement added: “We are obliged by law not to subsidise bus services that compete directly with commercial services, however uncertain the future of those services is. “It is, of course, possible that First may decide in the intervening period that they will not continue their service beyond January and they don’t have to make that decision until November so we may be faced with the need to renegotiate a replacement service again.”

“I would just like to say a big heartfelt thank you for looking after our dad (pops) so well. Accepting the fact at a young age that carers were required is not easy. What we never could have guessed at that time was that we would have met such genuine, kind, professionals and fun people who would add so much to a quality of life which was otherwise slowly declining. You were all very much part of the family and Pops really enjoyed the time he spent with each and everyone of you. He seemed more comfortable with any of your carers than he did with a lot of other people and I think it was because he was able to relax and be himself. You were also an incredible support for the rest of the family, allowing life to go on as best as possible for the rest of us. As things got tougher towards the end you were a huge support for Mum too, assisting her with appointments and visiting Pops in hospital made a huge difference at a time when we really needed the help. You have all become friends to us, and thank you awfully for putting up with his awful jokes.“ The Harris Family.

Pupils, teachers and staff both past and present released 60 balloons to launch Wellsway School’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Among the guests were three of the teachers who worked at the school when it first opened its doors in September 1956 as Wellsway County Secondary – Joan Ellison, Ron Gadsby and Ann Burridge. Also taking part in the launch were six past and present head teachers and six of the school’s first students. Mrs Ellison, now 80, spoke about her memories of the early days, which were challenging but fun times, she said, and urged the current students to make the most of the opportunities open to them. Big ideas for children’s miniature gardens The 5 Villages Youth Group had a fantastic time at their first meeting after the summer break, which was held as usual at Compton Dando Village Hall, writes Ros Anstey. The youngsters enjoyed making miniature gardens, showing off their creative flair as they constructed fences, trees, flowers, washing lines, gates, footpaths and even wigwams. Sixty budding scientists from Chandag Infant School had an inspiring start to the school year with a visit to the labs at Keynsham’s IKB Academy. The Year 2 pupils are studying the topic “Everything is awesome” this term and have been researching scientists and inventors. The group, who are aged six and seven, were invited to join students at IKB to look around the science labs and carry out investigations – with many of them dressing up as the scientists they have been studying. Annie Smart, head teacher at Chandag Infant School, said: “The children were buzzing after the visit and some said they’d like to go to IKB ‘when they are teenagers’. They were thrilled to be doing ‘real science’. We are grateful to IKB for opening

Police praise students’ kindness after they came to aid of distressed woman

Two teenagers from a Keynsham school have been praised for their “compassion and courage” after stepping in to help a distressed woman in Bristol. Liam Davis and Will Coles, who are both in Year 10 at IKB Academy, were with friends in the Old Market area when they came across the woman and, fearing she was going to harm herself, stopped to comfort her before calling the police. Will said: “We were crossing the bridge and we saw her on the wrong side of the railings so we grabbed her. We called the police and waited with her until they arrived. We asked her if she had any money and she said ‘no’ so we gave her £10. “I felt so proud of myself for helping someone in need and hope she is feeling much better and is back on track with her life.” The pair, along with Olivia Rowley, Lauren Lerway, Baylea Camm, Rosie McGill and Seb Davis, all Year 10 students at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common, have since been thanked personally by Chief Constable Andy Marsh at Avon and Somerset Police headquarters in Portishead, where they were given a tour, including a visit to the communication centre that took their call for help. One of the officers called to the incident in June, PC Adam Finlayson, said: “Upon our arrival, they were comforting and

supporting the distressed woman and seemed to have struck up a good rapport with her. They provided her reassurance and arguably prevented her from causing herself harm. I was massively impressed by their actions and attitude.” Debbie Gibbs, the principal of IKB Academy, said: “We are so proud to have these two boys in Year 10 at IKB and look forward to sharing in their future successes. They have shown great maturity and deserve this public recognition of their compassion and courage.” Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “I heard about what they had done and I was very impressed. I wanted to thank them personally. This was an act

Cadets storm to success at summer camp Army Cadets from Keynsham have returned from an annual camp at Chickerell in Weymouth with a raft of awards. Members of the Bristol Army Cadet Force’s Keynsham Detachment spent 10 days at the military camp taking part in first aid, fieldcraft, paddle boarding, kayaking, drill and more.

There were celebrations when the detachment won the coveted Detachment of the Year award for the second year running and the group earned the most Duke of Edinburgh award passes. There were also individual achievements for C/SGT Jay Thomas, who was awarded Cadet of the Year, and L/Cpl

Aiden Bevan, who won the Best Junior NCO award. A detachment spokesperson said: “Everyone that attended had a great time and cannot wait for their next adventure with the Army Cadet Force. The ACF gives young people in Keynsham a wealth of experiences along with a massive sense of achievement.

New season brings new trees for pupils Pupils will be able to watch the seasons change in their school grounds after a local estate agent stepped in to replace a number of diseased trees. Four conifers growing on either side of the driveway leading to Saltford Primary from Claverton Road had to be removed, prompting the team at Davies and Way to buy the school four young field acers, which were planted during the summer by a group of volunteers. A Davies and Way spokesperson said: “The trees, which are deciduous, should provide a beautiful variety of natural colour from spring until autumn, when the leaves will finally change colour as a fantastic display for the start of each school year. “The children will also be able to use the trees to increase their understanding and awareness of the seasonal changes in nature. “It’s good to know also that the old conifer trees have not gone to waste – they have been recycled by the school and used within their grounds.”

School dinners to savour as council meals service scoops a silver award Primary school pupils enjoyed a special Great British Breakfast lunch to celebrate an award for Bath and North East Somerset Council’s school meals service. The team has achieved the prestigious Silver Food for Life Catering Mark, which is awarded by the Soil Association to caterers who source fresh, environmentally sustainable and ethical food, make healthy eating easy and support local food producers. The celebration lunch was held on Wednesday, September 28, and Councillor Martin Veal, the council’s cabinet member for community services, joined youngsters at Saltford Primary School. He said: “I’d like to congratulate our school meals service on achieving the Silver

Councillor Martin Veal with pupils at Saltford Primary School and Louise Bizley, school catering services manager Food for Life Catering Mark – this demonstrates that they

are providing fresh, local, organic, healthy and ethically-

sourced food to our local school children. “Our pioneering new school food contract is also now under way and will allow more small producers to supply fresh produce to schools.” It was part of a series of events marking British Food Fortnight (September 17-October 2), including the Great Bath Feast, which runs until October 9 and features the Bath Bites Food and Drink Fair in the Abbey Churchyard every day, tastings, talks, tours and more (visit http://greatbathfeast. co.uk). Activities bring the generations together Youngsters have helped older residents in Keynsham prepare for a colourful floral spring display as part of a new initiative to break down barriers between different generations. Pupils from St John’s Primary School visited Age UK B&NES’ day centre in Keynsham on September 27 for the first of a series of monthly activity sessions. Working together, the children and the older people attending the day centre potted up bulbs ready to put outside when spring comes next year. Lorraine Fox, Age UK B&NES’ day centre manager in Keynsham, said: “The idea came after we saw how much our members enjoyed annual carol singing visits by the primary school children. It was so wonderful to see our members light up with the children around, we thought we could do more together.” The charity approached St John’s to arrange monthly activities, which will include painting; knitting; sharing war memories, and talking about

school life past and present. Deputy head teacher Mark Hilliam said: “St John’s is delighted to be involved in this project, which will have many benefits for everyone. We expect about ten children aged nine and ten to take part regularly. “They will learn so much from the experiences and memories of the people at the day centre. It will help them understand more about how they can play an active role in the community.” Age UK B&NES’ day centre, at Charlton House, Hawthorns Lane, Keynsham, runs on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am-3pm, offering a range of recreational and social activities, companionship, outings and talks. A day at the centre costs £15, which includes transport, lunch and activities. Contact 01225 466135 for further information. Sisters fundraise their way to Florida as they earn places on Team GB in triathle Two sisters from Keynsham have qualified to represent Great Britain at the World Triathle Championships in Florida this month. The event will see Ellie and Georgia Gussey go head to head with other young athletes in shooting, swimming and running contests after they both finished in the top five in their age groups at the British Championships in July. Both Ellie, 15, and Georgia, 12, train with Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club as well as Bath Pentathlon Club, which was set up by dad Andrew to help local youngsters get into the sport, with four from Keynsham now off to the US. Despite the sisters’ success in qualifying, however, it wasn’t certain the girls would be able to travel to the US because of the

costs involved – around £6,000, including entry fees and kit. But, said Andrew, family and friends convinced them it was an opportunity not to be missed and they began fundraising. He said: “Family and friends have been amazingly supportive, giving us raffle items, helping us spread the word and then suggesting we set up a Gofundme webpage, where even people we don’t know have donated. Then we were lucky enough to receive £1,000 from Gofundme themselves as they pick so many causes a month and make a donation. “We have been humbled by how generous people have been.” The family have been selling raffle tickets with prizes including a shirt signed by cyclist Mark Cavendish, items donated

by cricketer Joe Root and a Bath Rugby signed shirt – with local cycling club Salt and Sham and Keynsham Cricket Club both inviting the family along to offer tickets to members. “The girls do a lot of competitions so they are taking it all in their stride at the moment,” Andrew said. “They will be nervous on the day but at the moment they are really excited about going to Florida.” The event takes place from October 21-23 and to find out more about Ellie and Georgia’s fundraising drive, visit www. gofundme.com/Worldtriathle Pictured are Ellie, right, and Georgia Gussey in the Team GB race kit ahead of the World Triathle Championships in Florida

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans It’s been a busy month in our office, the variety of work that we get involved in is always challenging. We have had a lot of positive results and been dealing with a number of local issues; one of these involved completing another successful Misuse of Drugs Act warrant in Keynsham. I also attended the Careers Fair at Broadlands Academy. I found it really interesting and refreshing to see how many young people still have the ideals and ambitions to aim to join the police and the majority of them giving the

reason that they want to help the community. This month we have suffered two significant and ‘high-profile’ events in Keynsham. One was a high-value burglary at Lloyds Chemist and the other the ‘bank robbery’ at the Halifax on the High Street. A significant arrest was made following the robbery and a suspect has now been charged with this offence. Inquiries are still ongoing into the burglary at the chemist, any information can be reported through Crimestoppers. At this time of year both commercial and domestic burglaries increase, and with the darker nights and change in the weather that’s coming we will see further increases. It is also an expensive time of year with Christmas coming. Don’t forget your basic security measures at home. Check your security lighting

Sponsorship spurs on Rotarian Rob as he loses weight and gains pounds for charity A Keynsham slimmer gave himself the extra incentive of raising money as he shed the pounds for two good causes. Rob Thurston, a member of Keynsham Rotary Club, pictured right, has lost two stones and eight pounds to date, raising £1,054 from sponsorship in the process. He has split the money between two charities supported by the club, presenting £527 each to the Bujugali Trust and Diabetes UK on September 28. John Griffiths received the cheque on behalf of the Bujagali Trust, a charity set up

in Bristol in 2003 and which supports schools in Gulu and Jinja in Uganda providing some of the basic requirements needed to offer young people a decent education. Visit www. bujagalitrust.org for more information. The group was also given a talk by Stuart Walker from Diabetes UK at the meeting, explaining the work being undertaken to develop treatments and hopefully cures for a disease that is affecting more and more people. is functioning properly and your other measures are in place, be vigilant around both yours and your neighbours’ properties. If you see anything out of the ordinary then please call and report it. One of the community issues regularly raised with us is speeding in and around Keynsham. This problem must be looked at from a number of angles. Is there an issue of speed? Does the road layout support excessive speed? Is there a perceived speeding problem, and are singular offenders making the problem appear worse? To ascertain the level of the problem we have been conducting speed checks in Keynsham. We have plotted up various roads in both the 20mph and 30mph areas and are looking to record 100 vehicles’ speeds at these locations at different times of the day and night. Once we have gathered all of this information it will be

decided how best to combat any problem. One way is with Community Speed Watch. This is a scheme run by volunteers who assess the speed of vehicles, record this information and advise offenders by way of letters as to the offences that they are committing, where we look at education rather than enforcement. Watch this space, as we may be looking for volunteers in the coming months. The end of this month will bring Halloween, another challenge for our local policing teams. I really enjoy this time of year but please remember to be respectful when getting involved in the traditions of trick or treat. It is aimed at being fun for all involved so try to remember this. Your local policing team will be on duty during the evening and so if there are any problems, please contact us to report them.

Recruiting writers With the change of seasons, Keynsham Creative Writers are looking for new members to join their group. Whether you already write or are just thinking of starting to write, but not sure how to go about it, you will be welcome to meet members, who range from absolute beginners to published professionals, from teenagers to octogenarians. The group gets together at Keynsham Library at 2.30pm on the second and fourth Monday of every month to share work and ideas and support each other. Record to support foodbank’s work

A Los Angeles-based band will be helping to provide meals to those in need in the Keynsham area after teaming up with the town’s record shop Longwell Records. Owner Iain Aitchison was contacted by the activist rock band Bread Over Bombs, who offered him the chance to become the first in England to stock their eponymous fundraising album in his Temple Street store. The band were formed in 2013, putting 100 per cent of profits from music sales towards helping the LA Foodbank, providing an estimated 10,000 meals already. Money from sales of their new record, which Iain describes as having a Beatles or Bowie-esque sound, in Keynsham will go to Keynsham Foodbank. Fundraisers turn miles into money to support Mencap group’s activities As the sun shone, brakes were checked, chains oiled, tyres pumped and legs and arms stretched as we all geared ourselves up for the Keynsham and District Mencap Society’s annual sponsored cycle, walk and wheelchair push, writes fundraiser Amanda Leonard. Well done to those that achieved the 25-mile cycle, 10mile cycle and five-mile walk. This is one of our most popular fundraising activities of the year and we had over 65 people take part on September 18. This included members and their families, staff and volunteers; and we were also very pleased to welcome a few new families to the event. Everyone had a fantastic day and came away with a great sense of achievement. We were very lucky to enjoy the facilities of the Bird in Hand pub in Saltford, which once again after the event provided much-needed refreshments of sausages and chips. We were looked after extremely well by a team of awesome staff who were very helpful and accommodating - a massive thanks to Richard who remained attentive throughout the event. We welcomed photographer Edward Evans who took some amazing photos that really

captured the day, and these are all displayed on our Facebook page. A huge thanks goes to Jamie Ahearne from Sainsbury’s Local in Keynsham, who provided water and squash for the water stations; Pat Shelley for helping at the registration post; David Johnson from Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome who manned the water station and warned on-coming cyclists to look out for our purple-clad participants; and finally our own trustees Sue Jeffrey and Andrea Westlake for tending to the thirsty camels who pulled up at the station in Bitton. We are confident that we beat our total raised last year, the final count is not in yet but we expect to have raised in excess of

£4,000, which is superb. Although we are associated to National Mencap we are completely self-funded, and this money will go a long way to helping local people with learning disabilities to enjoy social and leisure activities, all in a safe and secure environment. This event was quite timely: funds raised will also need to go towards unforeseen costs, as earlier this month we had the misfortune of our mini bus breaking down while taking members of our 18+ club on their annual holiday. At very short notice we needed to arrange emergency alternative transport at an additional cost to ensure our members did not miss out on a holiday they were very

much looking forward to. Keynsham and District Mencap Society provides a wide range of activities for young people and adults with learning (and some physical) disabilities, including weekly clubs, outings and sports - namely football and boccia. There is a fitness programme as well as annual holidays and weekends away. For more information on how you could help, contact info@keynshamemncap.org. uk or visit our website www. keynshammencap.org.uk Keynsham Mencap Society is hosting its annual fundraising quiz night at Saltford Hall on Saturday, October 8, from 7pm. BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group On Sunday, September 4, members of the Keynsham branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust met up on a warm, dry day at the Bee and Pollination Festival at Bristol Botanic Gardens, writes our correspondent. Volunteer guide Tony West took us on a very informative tour of the Evolutionary Dell, from the first land plants (mosses), through Equisetums (horsetails) and tree ferns to the first true flowering plants (magnolias and waterlilies). We were also shown around the pollination garden, where plants are divided into beetle-, fly-, bee- and bird-pollinated species. There are willow sculptures of each pollinator, in case you are not sure of the difference between them! This was followed by a fascinating Live Hive Beekeeping demonstration, with the beekeeper and hive safely behind a protective mesh screen. He told us about the structure of the hive, and the different kinds of bees and their behaviour. He opened the hive and showed us the workers, the

queen and the honeycomb, and encouraged people to become beekeepers! Our new season of talks kicks off at 7.30pm on Friday, October 14, at the Baptist Church Hall, with the return of speaker Gill Brown, who will engage us with tales of the hazel dormouse. Thanks to Rita Andrews for the wonderful photos.

Joy for volunteers as historic brass mill’s waterwheel is restored to working order

Saltford Brass Mill’s waterwheel is back in action once more giving members of the group who care for the historic attraction cause for celebration. The 18ft 11in wheel has been restored to working order for the first time in two years after it became jammed with debris and the sluice gate damaged with age. Volunteers from the Saltford Brass Mill Project temporarily dammed the mill race – the channel where the water flows through – and constructed and installed a new sluice gate. The mill operated from the 1720s until 1925 and was used in the manufacture of brass hollow-ware, such as pans and kettles, and brass sheet. The restored wheel was one of four in the mill and survived

Members of Saltford Brass Mill Project celebrate, left; president Joan Day looks at the wheel, right because it was adapted to drive a dynamo to power the lighting in a squash court built in the mill in the late 1920s. The wheel is now powering the dynamo once again and members of the project, including industrial archaeologist and author Joan Day and

chairman Tony Coverdale, met up at the mill to celebrate the occasion. The mill reopened to the public in May 2015 after extensive safety work and is open on Saturday, October 8, and for the weekends of Bath and North East Somerset Museums Week,

which runs from October 22-30. The team is always keen to recruit new members to fill a wide range of roles, so anyone with an interest in local heritage is invited to drop in or get in touch. Find out more at http:// brassmill.com

LETTER FROM YOUR MP

Jacob Rees-Mogg

P

arliament reassembled in September and the first statement was perhaps inevitably on Brexit. At this stage there is little detail but some important principles are emerging. The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, told the House of Commons that “we will decide on our borders, our laws and taxpayers’ money”. These eleven words mean that the free movement of people will have to cease. Rules must be applied to economic migrants from the EU just as they are to the rest

of the world. This does not mean we will refuse to let people in on holiday or business trips but to take up residence they will need a permit. In deciding our own laws once again the will of the people will be the supreme law. No longer can laws fairly made in Parliament be set aside by a bureaucracy overseas. This will allow the voters to change government and see real policy differences rather than find that little alters because of Brussels. It will also rob politicians of an excuse for inaction. Through determining our own laws we will set our own tax rates. This will include VAT, which is an imperfect system in need of reform. Later the same day the House of Commons considered VAT on women’s sanitary products which is still levied by EU fiat. We will also keep our own money and not have to fund EU extravagance. Eleven words that show that Brexit truly will mean Brexit, the guiding light of a potentially great future.

LETTERS No to grammar schools in B&NES

Intelligence cannot be defined let alone measured. Even if one could, it would be like one’s blood pressure with different readings at different times. This is what makes the Conservative Government’s proposals for selective grammar schools so stupid as well as dangerous. Mrs May talks of tests that cannot be coached for. This is utter fantasy. Did you know that girls had to score higher in the 11-plus than boys to pass to compensate for their earlier maturity? Yes, a boy could get a grammar school place ahead of a girl who had better results! What parent would want to subject their children to a grammar school entrance lottery? I am struck by how many of those who failed the old 11-plus speak so strongly years afterwards about the feelings

of failure despite forging great careers. I did attend a grammar school. I remember how a classmate achieved only two passes at O-level. A grammar school is no guarantee of academic success. I did benefit from good teaching but not all of it was good. In my teaching career in comprehensive schools I encountered numerous outstanding teachers whose expertise was available to children of all backgrounds and ability. Imagine the destabilising effect on our local secondary schools if one or more opted to become a grammar school. Sorry, Mrs May, you have failed. No to grammar schools, no to secondary moderns or equivalents, and yes to more vocational education available to all. Duncan Hounsell Saltford

October, 2016 children’s centres. First, Councillor Evans says up to all children’s centres may close due to budget overspending. Then Councillor Warren says no decisions have yet been made and attempts to blame parents for not spending enough on “traded services”. Next the crossparty Children and Young People scrutiny panel will be asked to “review the saving options”. The truth of the matter is that any threat to children’s centres is down to Conservative decision-making. A Conservative government has decided to continue to hit council budgets with annual reductions and a Conservative council is choosing to prioritise the allocation of money elsewhere. They are cynically targeting service cuts at those least able to speak out or make a fuss – vulnerable children. These services are clearly considered more expendable than other council activities by this administration. This Tory-run Cabinet is showing it can’t be trusted with your money and that, when pressed for cash, it’s services for

families with vulnerable children in Keynsham that will be first to go. Councillor Lisa Brett Chair of the ‘Children and Young People’ Policy Development and Scrutiny Panel

No ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to waste

Thanks to the efforts of residents throughout Bath & North East Somerset, our area has a strong track-record when it comes to recycling. However, in recent times our recycling rates have begun to slip behind other parts of the country as councils implement new measures to increase the amount residents can recycle. At the same time, with the council facing an unprecedented financial challenge, we cannot ignore the rising costs of waste disposal – a lorry-load of general waste costs the council £1,000 to dispose of, while a truck-full of recycling actually earns the council £100. It would be a disservice to local taxpayers if these costs were not taken into account. The changes we are

making to waste and recycling collections from next year therefore seek to meet three key objectives: to increase our area’s already impressive recycling rates, reduce the amount of litter on our streets, and maintain a regular, high-quality service for local taxpayers. In deciding upon the best system to meet these objectives, we considered various options and looked extensively at waste collection methods throughout the country. We looked at both the “alternate fortnightly” system as well as the “three weekly” bin collections some councils are moving towards, but rejected both of these on the grounds they did not meet with our objectives and would not deliver the level of service our residents rightly expect. The system we therefore chose is the one used by the vast majority of councils across the country of all political colours – and has proven to be the most successful in terms of increasing both recycling rates and service satisfaction. It means that all recycling

and food waste will continue to be collected weekly, with the remaining non-recyclable waste collected every other week. With 72 per cent of household waste currently recyclable, the vast majority of waste will therefore continue to be collected every week. Alongside this, to help keep our streets clean and protect waste from being scavenged by gulls and other animals, all households will be provided with either a wheelie-bin or, where more appropriate, a gull-proof sack. Over the coming year, the council will work with residents to make the transition as smooth as possible, and we are clear that there will be no “one-size-fits-all” approach to the introduction of bins and bags. Of course any change will take time to get used to, but I am confident that once the new system has had time to bed-in, residents will deem these changes an improvement to what is an important local service. Cllr Martin Veal (Cons), B&NES Cabinet Member for Community Services

Doberman Lara leads the way as top dog at village’s sixth successful canine show by Ros Anstey On a drizzly and overcast day Compton Dando Community Association (CDCA) joined forces with Mutts With Friends dog rehoming and rescue, to host the village’s sixth fun dog show. There were nine classes which saw the mutts strut their stuff, with awards including best gun dog, most handsome dog, prettiest bitch, waggiest tail, best rescue, most “unalike” pair and, of course, Best in Show. Last year’s Best in Show, Badger, a year-old Border Collie from Keynsham, came runner-up in one class, but didn’t make the final. Best in show this year went to Suzie Haines with Lara the Doberman, also from Keynsham. The Peter Middleton Trophy for Best Rescue went to Mrs Bird. A range of trade stands adorned the field in Compton, selling food, dog toys, crafts and jewellery and representing a number of different charities. This event was probably the biggest to date, bringing together Compton Dando residents, lots of people who have rescued dogs from Mutts and a number of others from further afield. CDCA chairman Hannah Maggs said: “It was a woofingly great success and a total of

Class winners preparing to be judged for Best in Show £1,300 was raised, with the proceeds being split between the two charities – CDCA and Mutts with Friends. “Thanks to everyone for their hard work and support in making this such a success,” she added. Sponsors this year included main sponsor Welcome Home Cleaning Services, Skinners Dog Food, MGM Services, Debbie Fortune, Dawn Middleton, The Compton Inn and Nature’s Vet.

with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

The rather elegant original buildings, dating from 1840, at Keynsham Station were demolished in June 1970. At this time the station, then known as Keynsham & Somerdale, became a victim of British Railways’ drive to cut the costs of local lines. Facilities at stations that survived were reduced to a minimum and it seems from this picture that passenger safety may also have left a little to be desired. n NEWS Warm welcome for new launderette

Business has been brisk for a new laundrette in Keynsham’s Park Estate, which opened its doors on September 26 with a ribboncutting ceremony performed by ward councillor and B&NES Council chairman Alan Hale. Anthea Cummings says she has been surprised by the number of visitors her new venture The Wash Tub in Queens Road has attracted in its first few days – although it seems to have proved her belief that the community needed a new laundrette correct. Formerly a business travel consultant working full-time from home, Anthea says she had long wanted to open a launderette to enjoy interacting with the community and when the old Queens Road business closed she saw the ideal opportunity. She said: “We have had only positive feedback from people and everybody is very impressed with the launderette.” The Wash Tub is staffed seven

Success is sweet for talented sugarcrafters The skills of a group of local sugarcrafters have been recognised on an international level. A display produced by members of Keynsham and Saltford Sugarcraft Guild took silver at the British Sugarcraft Guild’s International Exhibition in Telford earlier this year. Titled “A journey through the growth and use of oak trees in Tudor times”, the table features everything from realistic acorns and intricate trees to a plaque featuring Henry VIII himself and a tiny yet detailed Tudor dining room – and all made from a mix created with icing sugar. The display, which featured work by 10 members of the group, was put on show to the public in Keynsham Library on September 23 and 24, with many visitors surprised to learn what they were admiring was made entirely from the sweet stuff! The group also had a window display at the library featuring

animals and very convincing flowers. The guild meets every second Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at Wick House Community Hall, Wick House Close, Saltford, enjoying cake decorating demonstrations and workshops. New members are welcome to come along and anyone who would like to find out more can contact Iris Seymour on 01275 834233.

n NEWS Keynsham meets the ‘Knockerettes’ A group of keen knitters who call themselves the “Knockerettes” spent a day in Keynsham Library showing visitors the pieces they were working on and the finished products. But the items on display weren’t jumpers or hats – the women were all members of Knitted Knockers, a charity that provides handmade knitted breast prostheses for women who have had surgery. Their table held a colourful display of the items, which are made by individual volunteers who receive orders from across the UK via their website. A far cry from the rather heavy silicone prostheses provided by the health service, the “knitted knockers” are lightweight, soft, come in an array of colours and are tailored to the needs of the woman who has ordered one, often arriving with pretty packaging and a personal touch from the volunteer who made it – and all free of charge.

Volunteers who create knitted breast protheses for women across the UK as parrt of the Knitted Knockers charity held a ‘knit and natter’ session at Keynsham Library The group even makes “aquas”, which can be worn for swimming and are filled with shower scrunchies. Local volunteer Jo Page organised the “knit and natter” session in Keynsham, which was joined by a number of other members and by UK founder Jo Dervisoglu, who set up the charity in 2014 after discovering the US version. Across the UK, the volunteers have made more than 2,000 of the prostheses this year so far, with some of the local group say-

ing they might each make around 70 in a year, and their website is filled with touching testimonials, including one from Rachel Ferry, a mum of two young children who discovered she had cancer in both breasts in 2014 and underwent a mastectomy. Rachel is now a member of a support group and always recommends the charity and the group had brought a copy of her letter to the library for visitors to read. In it she says: “They come so beautifully packaged and it’s obvious they are made with love.

Many of our ladies are moved to tears when they receive their parcels. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it’s a life-changing service that Knitted Knockers provide.” The group spent the day chatting to local people about the service and there was also the chance to donate or buy a “miniknocker” keyring. Anyone who wants to find out more about Knitted Knockers, make a donation or place an order can visit the charity’s website at www. knittedknockersuk.com

Organisers ‘thrilled’ with support shown for summer of themed afternoon teas by Ros Anstey Afternoon teas hosted by Compton Dando’s village church have once again proved a success, raising around £1,900 for church funds. For the past five years members of St Mary’s Church have been opening the building every Sunday afternoon from May until the end of August, and serving tea and cake. The latest events – themed Sunday afternoon teas – proved a big hit with visitors. A musical afternoon started the ball rolling this summer, with David Brunskill and some singers entertaining everyone, and a cream tea for the Queen’s birthday followed the week after, with a royal-themed display for everyone to enjoy. Other afternoons featured an exhibition of local artwork, photography, displays on the church’s history

Jenny and Richard Davis running the tea and cake stand; visitors Henry Morgan and Betty Culp enjoying refreshments at one of the themed Sunday teas at Compton Dando and the chance to find out about the villagers who fought in the First World War. One of the organisers, Joy Webb, said: “Through displayed photographs at the final weekend, visitors could look back through this year’s summer Sunday teas and their themes.

“We have enjoyed meeting many new visitors over the past 16 sessions as well as those returning from previous years and received many kind remarks, together with getting great support as usual from villagers.” Another organiser, Jenny Davis, added: “We were thrilled

with the popularity of our teas, which raised this fantastic amount of money. “A big thank you to all who have made cakes, served teas, washed up and welcomed visitors, and a special thank you to everyone who helped with the different weekly themes.”

Sheriffs’ visit a real high point for project Two sheriffs were in town to mark an important milestone in the conversion of Keynsham’s former chocolate factory into a £60 million retirement community. The High Sheriff of Bristol Helen Wilde and High Sheriff of Somerset Edward BayntunCoward joined St Monica Trust chief executive David Williams and president Charles Griffiths for a topping-out ceremony at the site, as the redevelopment reached its highest point. Rather than placing a tree on the roof, as the Scandinavian tradition used to dictate, the guests fitted an engraved “top hat” to a gas flue on top of the Brookmead building, formerly the factory’s Block B. The Chocolate Quarter, as the buildings are now known, is due to open in next summer, accommodating 136 apartments and a 93-bed care home as well as offices, shops and public facilities including a 50-seat

Charles Griffiths, the High Sheriffs of Bristol and Somerset and David Williams fitting the ‘top hat’ cinema, swimming pool, dance studio and pizza restaurant. Mr Williams said: “While the trust has been a part of life in Bristol since 1925, The Chocolate Quarter represents our first foray into Bath and North East Somerset, so we’re delighted to welcome the respective sheriffs for both counties.”

Mr Bayntun-Coward said: “It’s fascinating to see the progress of the build and the speed at which the retirement community is taking shape. “I’m sure that the wide range of facilities that will be available at The Chocolate Quarter will be of great benefit to the communities of both Bath

and North East Somerset and Bristol.” The marketing suite is opening this month and apartments will start from £240,000. For further information, call 0117 949 4004, email info@thechocolatequarter. org.uk, or visit www. thechocolatequarter.org.uk

Keynsham Methodist Church held its Harvest services at Victoria in the High Street last Sunday, writes our correspondent, where the display at the front of the church had been designed and built by one of the church members, Mike Lambern, using many of the plants that he had produced in his own garden. The windowsills also had displays produced by various groups from the church and

the theme for the weekend was the well-known harvest hymn We Plough The Fields and Scatter. Morning worship was led by a local preacher from Luckington, Robert Simpkins, who happens to be a dairy farmer, and in the evening members took part in a “Songs of Praise” led by the church minister Rev. Philip Simpkins, who happens to be Robert’s brother. A real family affair!

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Bloom volunteers have fingers crossed for gold – and purple! Keynsham in Bloom volunteers will head to Taunton this month to find out whether the town has retained its gold award – while a project with the Rotary Club of Keynsham promises to make a splash this spring. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James tells us more. Keynsham in Bloom volunteers are keeping fingers crossed that we will be bringing back a gold award for the second year running. The South West in Bloom regional awards are being held on October 6 at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton. The awards see more than 400 community volunteers and fellow Bloomers gathering to collect their awards. It’s always an anxious wait following on from the town being judged back in July. It will be wonderful if we can retain our gold award, and will mean so much for the community volunteers who have contributed to Keynsham in Bloom this year. Our own local Keynsham in Bloom awards are being held at the Scout Headquarters on Thursday, October 13, where we will be presenting certificates and

awards to residents and groups who entered into our garden competition. We will also be presenting certificates to those community groups that entered the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme. It’s a wonderful time to reflect on the work that volunteers carry out across Keynsham. Our sponsors have also been invited along to present some of the awards to our winners. We are also now starting to look at new Bloom projects over the forthcoming months. One exciting initiative involves working with Keynsham Rotary – read more below. Purple4Polio For over 30 years, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world. The amount of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just two, with over 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations, thanks to the help of Rotary. With eradication now closer than ever, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s latest campaign, Purple4Polio, is designed to unite communities to engage in activities as part of the final push to eradicate polio for good. It’s time to get your green fingers at the ready because one strand of the Purple4Polio campaign is an exciting partnership between Rotary

International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised. The partnership will allow Rotary clubs to join forces with the RHS’s community-based Bloom groups and work in tandem to bring people together, transform public spaces to brighten up the local area and promote health and wellbeing by planting six million crocus corms. This community ethos is a value shared by both Rotary and the RHS, and, with the planting, also helps the RHS’s

Greening Grey Britain campaign, adding a splash of vibrant purple to areas up and down the country. Keynsham Rotary will be joining forces with Keynsham in Bloom to plant 5,000 purple crocus in the autumn, which will provide a bright display during February next year. Winter display We are still collecting white pom-poms for a winter display in Keynsham – just hand them in at Keynsham Town Council office at 15-17 Temple Street.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Annual General Meeting

The society’s AGM on September 19 was attended by over 70 members. Chairman Richard Dyson reported on a successful year, with the move to St Dunstan’s Church Hall for the Monday evening talks proving popular, with numbers increasing. Visits to places of historic interest during the summer were also well-supported. The first two of the society’s History Walks leaflets were published, with the next two due to be issued soon. Looking to next year, the society continues work on research for a book on the recent history of Keynsham and Saltford and on the project to re-site the County Bridge Stone or “Abbot’s Chair” in the Memorial Park.

The Road to Bitton

After the formal meeting, Brian Vowles gave a presentation on Station Road and beyond, towards Bitton. Using the society’s extensive collection of historic images he used this as a thread to describe many aspects of Keynsham’s history. As well as

coach trip to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. An unseasonably warm day made exploring the many reconstructed Victorian-era houses, shops and workshops very enjoyable, while those wanting to cool down sampled the local ale in the sawdust-strewn pub or took a boat ride into the limestone caverns next to the site. It was certainly a visit that brought back memories for many people.

This photograph of Harvey’s paper shop in Station Road dates from 1904. The building survives, as does the small house next door, which may well be the oldest property in the town. the buildings that lined the road, the Roman sites at Somerdale, the abbey and the Monmouth Rebellion are all linked to just a few hundred yards of this road. In more recent times, descriptions of the coming of the Great Western

The meetings are held at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road and the first one is on the subject of “Victorian Model Farms”. Speaker Bill Evans will be describing examples of these and showing how they have shaped today’s landscape. For details of the society’s full talks programme, visit www. keysalthist.org.uk

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome Annual general meeting As this was the group’s first official AGM, chairman David Johnson reflected on the group’s beginnings – from the inaugural meeting on October 22, 2013, to achieve National Walkers are Welcome status. The first walk took place on June 2, 2014, and there have been 26 walks since, with more than 120 different walkers taking part. The festival held at the beginning of April was deemed a success, with an average of almost 20 people participating in each walk, with more than 200 taking part in the family treasure hunt finale in the Memorial Park on the Sunday afternoon He then thanked all the individuals and groups who had contributed, either financially, or with support, to help make Keynsham Walkers are Welcome the success that it is today He finished by confirming that the group had been delighted to have helped in the recent publication of one of the new River Avon Trails that were now available. This was followed by a meeting

Walkers’ photos from their route around Bradford-onAvon of the organising committee, during which a programme of walks and social events was agreed until May 2017. It was also agreed as an experiment, as a result of a walker’s suggestion, to occasionally hold an extra longer walk for the more serious-minded walkers among us. Programme November – A fun treasure hunt walk around Keynsham December – A walk around the Keynsham countryside, collecting greenery to incorporate in the making of a Christmas wreath, under the expert guidance of Liz Fox

January 2017 – An eight-mile walk back to Keynsham from Bath along the cycle path. Also, a social evening with a quiz. February – A walk around Wick March – A geo-caching walk April Walking Festival – Similar to this year’s event, but two additional walks May – A walk around Folly Farm Bradford walk, September After two days of rain, the skies had cleared as 27 of us converged on Keynsham Station on Sunday, September 4, to catch the 11.16am train to Bradford-on-Avon to join the Bradford-on-Avon Walkers are Welcome walking

festival. Once again we welcomed several new members to the group. After signing in, we then headed across Barton Farm Park to pick up the towpath for the 1.5-mile walk to Avoncliff. Here we had a 45-minute stop to enjoy the facilities this picturesque village has to offer, before heading down to the River Avon and following the riverside path back to Bradford. Here again there was time to explore the town with its many attractions and hostelries, before catching the 4pm train back to Keynsham. Another thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all.

Club’s £1,000 to help charity beat disease Members of the Rotary Club of Keynsham have handed over a cheque for £1,000 to a charity that aims to stop men dying of prostate cancer. The cash was raised at the club’s very successful plant fair at the Fear Hall in May and on September 21, junior vice president Roger Spooner presented the cheque to Pauline Blacker, a volunteer with Prostate Cancer UK. Pauline told members at the meeting that the charity is

dedicated to raising awareness of the disease, providing support to patients and funding research into new diagnosis techniques, treatment and medication. A spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Keynsham said: “Early diagnosis of this disease is essential to optimise the chances of a cure and we are pleased to support PCUK in pursuing these objectives. We also acknowledge with thanks the generosity and support of our public in helping to raise this money.”

Home-Start seeking two new trustees A charity that supports young families across the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area is looking for two new trustees to join its board. Home-Start Bristol (HSB) volunteers carry out weekly visits to families with at least one child under five and who are experiencing difficulties that affect family life. The charity has 78 volunteers and six part-time staff and supported 134 families during 2015/16. Trustees are unpaid, but

reasonable expenses can be claimed. The HSB board meets monthly, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday morning, at the Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, Southmead, Bristol. Our Wild And Romantic Garden It's never tickety-boo or smart And that's just the way we like it As we live in harmony with nature Watch the duck waddling across the lawn With her ducklings in tow It's a garden for wildlife created from a paddock With its well established tree A weeping willow, masses of flowering shrubs But pride of place, which we adore Carved out of the fertile farm soil Is a pair of ponds resplendent with waterlilies Home to a noisy band of resident frogs The garden is awash with geraniums and lavender Designed to bring in bees and butterflies

Which has become an endless inspiration As it reflects the love of flowers and countryside We love to sit down by the ponds Watch the dragonflies settle on the surface of the water The constant sound of birdsong, we absorb it all On warm mornings we take our breakfast To a table beside the ponds in the dappled shade Or a glass of wine on a bench early evening That special time when the setting sun's radiance Warms our inner soul as it delights and captivates

IN GOOD HEALTH with Mya Ahmed at The Medical

Back to school A few things to keep in mind now we’re back to reality, the summer’s over and the kids are back to school. Bad habits start from a young age, a few things we didn’t expect to affect us as kids are now issues we have to deal with as adults. In an age where technology has taken over the majority of our time, it is even more important to be aware of our posture with everyday activities, such as sitting at a desk in front of a computer, sitting on the sofa while watching TV or walking to work while carrying our overfilled bags on one shoulder and juggling a flask of coffee in one hand and our smart phone in the other. A lot of people think backpacks are only for children but many adults have taken to the trend this season. The weight distribution of a one-shouldered bag predisposes us to strains of the neck and shoulder as well as shifting the body’s entire posture to one side in order to

cope with the heavy load. Using a backpack ensures an even weight distribution over both shoulders, which in turn means there aren’t any imbalances in the posture. Although a backpack evenly distributes heavy loads across the shoulders and back, it can still have an effect on the posture. Carrying a heavy load on the back alters the biomechanics of the back, putting more pressure on the mid and low back, which in turn can cause muscle strain, irritation of the joints in the spine and lead to back pain. A heavy load across

the shoulders can lead to leaning the head forward, putting stress on the neck and spine as well as slumped shoulders. Don’t overfill your child’s back pack with books they don’t need – encourage them to use lockers or only take in the necessary books. Some tips to remember: l Consider using a backpack as opposed to a one-shouldered satchel. l If using a one-shouldered satchel be sure to swap the bag over to the opposite shoulder day to day. l Make sure the backpack is not overfilled and is worn at the correct height; wearing the backpack too low can increase the strain on the low back. l Consider a backpack with wheels, which can be pulled as opposed to carried on the back l If you or your family members suffer from back pain, get yourselves booked in to see one of our practitioners.

Antiques fair marks its first anniversary Saltford Hall’s Antiques and Collectors Fair will be celebrating its first anniversary on October 30. Mark said he is supporting the cause after talking to Tracie Miles, a cancer specialist nurse based at the RUH Bath. The EVE charity helps those affected by gynaecological cancers and supports research. As usual, entrance to the fair is £1 (accompanied under-16s free) and the event runs from 10am-3pm. The Saltford Hall cafe will be providing refreshments throughout. Mark said: “The charity does great work and is well worth supporting. There will be a wide range of traders and items for sale so it’s a good place to look for that unusual or quirky gift. Christmas is not so far away!”

Keeping busy?

We all like to be productive and able to contribute to our family life, work environment or community, so how can we do so without burning out. The answer is simple really. Just take your foot of the gas a little. If we reduce the “busy” in our lives we invariably achieve more. We are able to plan, organise and arrange tasks and time. This often results in tasks being completed in better time and to a better standard. It removes the desire to procrastinate and put off the plethora of outstanding tasks and demands. Most importantly it often results in us gaining some free time which we can use to the benefit of ourselves and our loved ones – which in our chaotic existence is an often overlooked necessity. Life becomes so much more enjoyable and productive when we slow down a bit and take stock of what we are doing and how we are spending our time. If we stop being busy, our mind as well as our heart benefits enormously. Stress falls away and life becomes enjoyable again. Are you keeping busy?

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non Fiction

How to be a better cook: 100 quick & easy recipes by Lorraine Pascale As the autumn draws nearer why not try some new recipe ideas with the ever popular Lorraine Pascale. In this book she outlines some simple recipes that can wow family and friends. Bored with the usual roast chicken? Why not try whole roast Thai green curry chicken or Moroccan-inspired roast lemon chicken which can be accompanied by minted new potatoes or sweet potatoes and mint mash. There are recipes with fish, vegetarian options and a great section on desserts and cakes. Beautifully illustrated with mouth-watering pictures, this is a great treat book and one that could inspire even the most inexperienced of cooks to create something a bit special.

Adult Fiction

The Silk Merchant’s Daughter by Dinah Jefferies Following on from Dinah Jefferies’ very successful The Tea Planter’s Wife comes a story set in 1952 French Indochina. Nicole is the mixed-race daughter of a successful silk merchant in French Indochina, an area which today comprises Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. On her 18th birthday she is given an abandoned silk shop in old Hanoi, Vietnam. She is immediately envious of her elder sister Sylvie, who is given the majority of the business by their French father. At her birthday party, Nicole

Children’s Society hosts coffee event

meets the charming American trader Mark but against the backdrop of Asian/Colonial politics and the inevitable coming of war, all that Nicole knows seems to be changing beyond recognition. She meets Tran, a Vietnamese insurgent, and as the story progresses Nicole must choose which side she is on: her family’s or her country’s. I thoroughly enjoyed The Tea Planter’s Wife and was not disappointed in this story. Dinah Jefferies is a great evocative writer and brings the sounds and smells of South Asia to light – you can feel the humidity and smell the sweet aroma of the frangipani trees. Also, I knew very little about the history of Vietnam before the Vietnam War in the 1960s so this was an additional treat. The author writes great characters who seem to mature as the book goes on and there are many twists and turns. The Temeraire, Throne of Jade and The Black Powder Wars by Noami Novik Noami Novik wrote the book Uprooted which I reviewed a while back. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I thought I would try her Temeraire series. It is the first time that I have read a series of books. I quite like the idea of a satisfying ending in a single read! I therefore stepped into the unknown territory of the ‘series’, which seemed quite daunting at first with nine books! I have now read the first three so I thought I would recommend them to you… Maybe you will get hooked, too! Temeraire: After a skirmish with a French ship, Captain William Lawrence finds himself in charge of a rare cargo: a dragon egg bound to get involved with helping the charity, which was launched more than a century ago. Among those supported by the charity are families trapped in debt, child runaways and young carers and its network of services and volunteers tackle child poverty, sexual exploitation and neglect. Describing the work of The Children’s Society, a spokesperson said: “It helps change chil-

for the Emperor Napoleon himself. Dragons are much prized: properly trained, they can mount a fearsome attack from the skies. Laurence must take the beast in hand and join the aviators’ cause, thus relinquishing hope of a normal life. Throne of Jade: The dragon, Temeraire, was meant to be the companion of the Emperor Napoleon and not captained by a mere officer in the British Air Corps. The Chinese have demanded his return and the British Government cannot afford to provoke the Asian superpower into allying with the French – even if it costs them the most powerful weapon in their arsenal, and forces Laurence and Temeraire apart forever. The Black Powder Wars: British flyer Will Laurence and his extraordinary dragon, Temeraire, gratefully anticipate their voyage home from China. But before they set sail, they are waylaid by urgent new orders: the British Government, having purchased three valuable dragon eggs from the Ottoman Empire, now requires Laurence and Temeraire to make a more perilous overland journey instead, stopping off in Istanbul to collect and escort the precious cargo back to England. They are all interesting stories revolving around the relationship between a captain and the dragon Temeraire. The author cleverly weaves fact with fantasy and creates a world that is almost like our own. Reviewed by Debbie Bellinger, Keynsham Library Assistant

Here a selection of funny ghosts hide out, borrow books from children as they don’t have any of their own but return them once they have read them. Can Bo help them out? Read her magical story and meet all her new friends. Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas & Korky Paul Follow the adventures of a special witch – Winnie. She lives in a black house, has black chairs and black stairs, black floors and black doors. However, her cat Wilbur is also black and after sitting on him and tripping over him, she decides to turn Wilbur green. Then he goes out into the long grass! Winnie is going to need a little magic to make sure she can see Wilbur all the time. Crazy magic follows. This is the first of the Winnie the Witch series – enjoy and look out for more in the series!

The Warm Home Discount is a government scheme whereby all but the smallest energy companies are required to give an annual rebate to customers on low incomes to help them heat their homes over the winter. This year the Warm Home Discount is worth £140 and is paid either as a credit on your electricity bill or, if you have a pre-payment electricity meter, you receive a voucher with which to top up your meter. You qualify if your energy supplier is part of the scheme and if you meet their eligibility criteria. The main eligibility criteria is to be in receipt of pension credit, but some energy suppliers offer this discount to others depending on age, benefits and family circumstances. Many residents miss out on this discount every year as it is not always given out automatically and the eligibility criteria can differ from one supplier to the next. Contact the Energy at Home Advice Service to find out if your energy supplier is part of the Warm Home Discount scheme, whether you are eligible for it, and how to claim it. GARDENING TIPS In the garden I have been looking through previous articles for October. Having read them I find that nothing has changed but everything is different. The weather, which is always unpredictable, nevertheless surprises us. Heavy rain at times, hot, even brilliant sunshine, the need to water new plants, but mind the soggy lawn after rain. So although we can find many things to compare, mostly it is a pleasant repetition. My “apprentice gardener” is showing promise, often beating me to it. What has surprised and delighted me was to see the fruit bats in the late September

On the plot The main vegetable growing season is over but there is still plenty to do on the plot. Courgettes and runner beans have all but finished and the pumpkins and squashes are picked for storage leaving the vegetables that stand the winter still in need of attention. These will continue to mature over the coming weeks so keep them clear of weeds to give them a chance. Late October is a good time to sow Japanese onion sets and garlic followed by broad beans as the ground will remain warm enough to start them into growth before winter takes a hold but

evenings. I sit outside, just at twilight, and wait. As the big ash trees are silhouetted against the clear sky, they suddenly will swoop by. I can never follow their flight, it is too quick, and I can never tell whether it is the same one returning or several at different times. I will sit for perhaps ten minutes and then I am satisfied. Some good results were had this year with begonias, particularly those in hanging baskets. They were left from last year and gave very good displays. Also the sedums, now showing lovely brownish/red seed heads. Roses are still in bloom and the scent fills the air as I walk by. We had some failures as well

with top fruit. Our pear crop was mostly non-existent, with just a couple of fruits being picked. Damsons were in short supply, but the Lord Lambourne had some good apples. Bramleys were cursed with brown rot. Why can we not find a preventative for the amateur? The commercial growers manage. I like looking into other gardens as I walk around. So many front gardens are parking spaces. But now and again one comes across a colourful, neat, cared-for garden and can see the results of much labour. I had a good year with the lawn. I fed and weeded in April, and tried to cut it twice a week. It came through the hot weather

without any bare patches, very few weeds and now looks rather smart. I shall spread some autumn slow-release feed and weed to catch the next rain and leave it until next year. No doubt I shall have to mow it in the next few weeks. What to do in October. Rake over the grass, remove any weeds by touch-weeder or small trowel. Begin to clear the fallen leaves before they become a mat. Remember to feed plants that will flower early next year, such as hellebores, camellias and such like. Clear hard standing areas of weeds, check water butts, gutters, drains etc and plant bare-rooted roses. Enough to go on with for the next month?

avoid a waterlogged area. Check over the sets and seeds carefully and discard any that look rotten or are already showing signs of shooting. First to sow are the onion sets which I buy loose so that I select healthy sets and the exact number needed. Plant them no less than four inches apart with 12 inches between the rows. Gently push the sets into prepared ground so that the tips are just visible. Follow this with garlic – I use bulbs supplied by a garden centre for planting but you can use shop-bought, although there is a risk of disease and you are never certain about the variety and its suitability to grow in this country. Split the garlic into

individual bulbs and use the same spacing as the onions but make a small hole first. Garlic need to be planted under the surface so that the tips are buried by about an inch. For broad beans choose a hardy variety such as Aquadulce and make a shallow trench two inches deep and about four inches wide and scatter the seed evenly along it so that the spacing is approximately four inches. Broad beans can grow quite tall so leave 24 inches between each trench. If needed, keep the area moist during the initial period until the shoots appear. After that, cover the young broad bean plants with a fleece tunnel

to protect them over the winter period. This time of year some people think that this is the end of the gardening season and confine their gardening tools to the shed but I prefer to think it is the most important part of the gardening year and work done now will give you a good start to the next season. Once this year’s crops have finished dig a bean trench and bury the vegetable waste leaving it to rot over winter, then dig as much as you can before the ground becomes too wet or cold. If your soil is heavy just leave the dug area in clumps and the winter will help break them down.

Aston Martin launches new dealership Aston Martin has opened its latest new dealership in the UK in Bristol, partnering for the first time with Dick Lovett. The purpose-built stateof-the-art facility at Cribbs Causeway features a 25-car luxurious showroom for new and pre-owned Aston Martin sports cars and a separate lounge where customers can tailor their new car to the exact specification. Speaking at a VIP customer reception held last month to launch the showroom, Aston Martin president and CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “I am delighted to open this outstanding new facility here in Bristol, which sets the benchmark for all dealership showrooms worldwide. “Dick Lovett are why we chose to open in Bristol, partly because it’s a family and we like the spirit of welcoming that you get when you come here. It is a fantastic location and they were prepared to make something that is really special to represent the brand.” Lynn Campbell, managing director, Dick Lovett, said: “It was great to see over 400 Aston Martin owners and enthusiasts this evening. The opening of our new state-of-the-art facility, in our 50th year, has made 2016 a fantastic year. The facility has been uniquely designed and reflects Aston Martin’s core design philosophy and craftsmanship.” On display at the opening event was the new DB11. The first product launched under the company’s ‘Second Century’ plan, the DB11 is the bold new

Also included in the display was the new Vanquish Zagato, a DB4 Convertible, the Aston Martin Racing #99 V8 Vantage GTE plus a host of other Aston Martin special project vehicles. In addition to this were examples from the company’s current lineup, and a selection of heritage models, including the Aston Martin A3, the oldest surviving Aston Martin in the world. The showroom was packed with admirers of the luxury cars on the evening, including the first

customer to purchase a car from the showroom, Patrick Cullen from south Bristol, who has ordered a metallic silver DB11 v12. “I’ve wanted it for quite a long time and have been saving for most of my life. It’s in production at the moment and is due in November,” he said. Aston Martin cars have been compared to owning a luxury handbag – the Hermes Birkin of the car world. Dr Andy Palmer added: “Our customers fall into two categories. There are the car nuts who have always dreamt of owning an Aston Martin, may not be hugely wealthy, or may have

come into the brand through the secondhand car market. The Aston is their passion. If you go to racing at Le Mans you will find a whole bunch of people who are supporting the brand and perhaps are James Bond fans, too. “Then there are the high net-worth individuals. There are about 16 million people around the world who have £1m of disposable cash and they are very discerning and look for the understated – that is where the Aston customer is drawn from.” The new South West and Wales showrooms are well placed for the production of the new DBX crossover SUV and the Lagonda, which will be handbuilt at a new £200m factory in St Athan in South Wales. SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field A hectic month saw Keynsham Town’s First Team hit the top of the Toolstation Western League Division One table on three separate occasions, writes our correspondent August ended with an accomplished 4-0 win at home to Chard Town. For once there was no fingernail-biting for the Ks’ loyal fans, as a first senior hat trick from Kyle Box and a typical poacher’s goal by Matt Brown made it 10 goals inside 72 hours for the team. Manager Chris King said: “It was a comfortable victory and the team played well as a unit. Everyone looked hungry and focused on winning the game. “We were all really pleased for Boxy on his performance and for scoring his first senior hat trick. He deserved it for his attitude so far this season. He’s trained hard from day one, played both reserves and first team and shown a real desire to push for a regular spot with us. He took his three goals extremely well and there’s no doubt he has got a lot of talent. If he can combine that with continued hard work it could be good season for him.” The following home game against Devizes Town saw another emphatic victory, this time 7-0, with seven different players (Jason Adams, Cam Shorney, Ben Harris, Matt Brown, Harry Ollis, Pat Davison and Sam Kipling) getting on the scoresheet. The strikes from Ollis and Kipling were their first senior goals for the club. Keynsham then added real grit and determination to their free-flowing football on a Wednesday evening, when they came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win at local rivals Oldland Abbotonians. The Ks defended really well and keeper Ash Wintle put in another top keeping performance, claiming pretty

much everything that came in the box. Matt Brown again popped up with the crucial winner after another tireless display. This result took Keynsham to the top of the league for the first time in over 15 years. Next up was a break from league action when Ivybridge Town visited Crown Fields in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round. A cracking game saw the Ks come out on top 4-2 after a slow start. The hosts didn’t start the game that well and looked a little leggy after a tough week, but once they got going they outplayed their visitors from the South West Peninsula League. The first goal from Kyle Box was a real team goal and sandwiched between two Matt Brown strikes, Ben Harris’s strike for the third was a top-drawer goal fit to win any game. Next up was a frustrating 2-1 home defeat against Portishead Town. While the Ks were on top for all the second half, two defensive lapses in the first half cost them dearly and it was certainly a case of not taking their chances. The goal was a screamer from Sam Duggan from 30 yards, but after that the ball just wouldn’t go in. They next travelled to Wincanton and responded really well to get a hard-working 1-0 win against a spirited home side. Chris King tinkered with the shape for the start of the match, but once they scored a goal through Jason Adams, they reverted back to their more familiar formation and looked fairly comfortable to record their sixth clean sheet in the league, just one shy of the whole of last season. Chris King said: “That is a real plus and the whole team are doing their best to keep the opposition out. Russ

Holt deserves a lot of credit as he works with the back four on positioning and decision making.” A Tuesday evening saw a fine second-half performance from the Ks dispose of Calne Town 4-0. After an open goalless first half, Sam Duggan finished neatly and a typical poacher’s brace from Matt Brown plus a great finish by Aaron Childs in injury time didn’t flatter the Ks. The next game saw another guest from the South West Peninsula League – Tavistock – visit Crown Fields for an FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round tie. A depleted Keynsham side quickly fell behind to a team which reportedly has a healthy playing budget for this level of football and despite the Ks having a great chance to equalise when only a goal down, the visitors went on to win 6-0. The following Tuesday night, however, saw them return to the top of the table with a convincing 3-0 win at home to Chippenham Park. After a fine strike from Ben Harris after five minutes, yet another typical poacher’s double from Matt Brown sealed the three points. Chris King said: “It was another test for us, especially as we were missing no less than six first team regulars. Thankfully we now have enough lads in the reserves that can step up and compete at Western League level and the likes of Aaron Osborne, Maz Martin, Harry Neil and Harry Ollis all did well for the parts they played. It’s sometimes hard to maintain consistency when the side has to be chopped and changed, but to keep a clean sheet against a free scoring Chippenham Park and to score three goals was really pleasing.” The month ended with a

hard-fought 2-0 win at home to a useful Cheddar outfit. After the visitors dominated the early possession, Matt Brown popped up with his 13th goal in 13 league games to give the Ks the lead in the 37th minute. Keynsham were much more on the front foot after the break and made the game safe with 20 minutes to go when sub Kyle Box, who had only just come on, controlled the ball with his first touch and coolly slotted it home with his second. The Ks are on the road for much of October, with their only home First Team game being on Saturday, October 29, when Welton Rovers visit Crown Fields. As if the team’s recent form isn’t enough to crow about, the club also won the Sportmanship Award for Division One in August, plus the August and September Respect Awards for the whole league. These awards are based on marks given by the match officials at every game and reflect the behaviour of everyone involved with Keynsham Town FC, both on and off the pitch. Secretary Julian French added: “It is no coincidence that the club has won these awards at the same time as our impressive form on the pitch and hitting the top of the table. All credit to Chris, Sean and Russ for the excellent discipline they have instilled in the lads.” On a sadder note, last month came the sad news that one of the club’s supporters has passed away. Readers may remember a gentleman called Colin Alexander-Jones, who took a shine to the Ks last year and started to come to a lot of home games. Colin would often be seen in the bar after the game getting players to sign his programmes and was never short of a tale or two; it is fair to say that he was a real character and condolences from everyone at the club go to Colin’s family. Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).

After a fine start to the season for the Ks with 35 goals notched and nine clean sheets from 13 league games, this left the league table looking like this on October 1: First Division P W D L F A GD PTS KEYNSHAM 13 10 0 3 35 9 26 30 Wellington 12 9 1 2 27 13 14 28 Hengrove 12 8 1 3 38 7 31 25 Malmesbury 13 7 3 3 31 20 11 24

SPORT Teams needed for six-a-side season

Members of Keynsham Hockey Club at the annual charity day

Town’s growing hockey club wins high praise on a national level Fresh from the success of an annual fundraising event, Keynsham Hockey Club had even more reason to celebrate with national recognition for the hard work put in by members. England Hockey named it Club of the Month, featuring them on their website as well as a report on the charity day held in August at Wellsway School. The event featured a tournament and was organised in memory of members James Clifford

and Kim Baptiste, raising £656 for the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK. Club chairperson Katherine Janes said: “The governing body has recognised the hard work our volunteers have put in to make the club such a success. “We might not be the biggest club in the Bristol and Bath area or have the highest league rankings but we do have bags of club spirit.” She added that following the

success of Team GB’s women’s hockey team, who won gold at the Olympics in Rio this summer, the club has seen membership grow and more than 50 women attended the first training session of the season. Keynsham Hockey Club runs two men’s sides, three ladies’ teams and a Junior Academy side. For more information, go to www.keynshamhockey.club or email chair@keynshamhockey. club

Emily Rose from Keynsham, front, in action against Australia

October, 2016

Emily and England A Keynsham netball player has helped England’s ladies’ squad make history when they claimed gold at the Indoor Netball NETS World Cup this summer. Emily Rose travelled to Wellington in New Zealand to take on the best teams from around the world in both the sixes and sevens competitions. The rheumatology specialist pharmacist who trains at the University of Bath overcame injury, including an Achilles tendon tear, to be given the all-clear to join the national squad, whose first challenge was to take on the dominant Aussies in a sixes match. They claimed an historic victory as the first England team to win against Australia in a sixes contest, but it was an achievement they couldn’t repeat when they faced the team again in the semi-finals some days later. Emily said: “The feeling was devastating! We had trained so

hard and almost reached the final but fallen at the final hurdle. The disappointment in the team was a feeling that we all agreed was not to be experienced again. We had a scheduled rest day the next day before dusting ourselves off and starting the sevens competition.” With her fiancé and parents now joining the other England supporters in the crowd, Emily said the sevens games got off to a mixed start but they made it through to finals day ready to give it their all. A hard-fought game against South Africa earned England a place in the semi-finals, where they faced New Zealand and managed a 35-35 draw at fulltime with a penalty shot in the last few seconds. England then secured their place in the grand final against Australia with a goal in extra time. The team had very little time to prepare for the game against

The England squad celebrate their victory against Australia in the Indoor Netball NETS World Cup sevens competition in New Zealand the world leaders but were level at half-time, with England just pushing ahead in the third quarter. A sudden surge in the final quarter put Emily and her team ahead by eight goals, claiming gold for England. She said: “I cannot even begin to describe the feeling when we

won gold. The crowd counted down the last 10 seconds and totally erupted after the final whistle. “We all put our bodies on the line giving every last bit of energy and more to secure the win. The whole sports centre went crazy as England ladies had made history as the first ever England

team to win gold and knock out the Aussies at ‘their’ sevens game. “We celebrated all the way to the closing ceremony where we were declared as World champs and the memories will stay with me for a lifetime.” The team, who relied on sponsorship to attend the

championships, with a number of local firms backing Emily – including Harvem and Polar Bear Windows – now hope their success will help promote the sport and encourage others to get involved. Visit www.englandnetball. co.uk/my-game/nets/ to find out more.

n SPORT Bowlers in healthy position for next season The season has drawn to a close at Keynsham Bowling Club and it has been a season well worth recalling, writes our correspondent. While the club has not won any of the inter-club competitions, the various teams have more than held their own in the leagues in which they play. The ladies compete in the North Somerset League and finished in a healthy sixth position. The men also play in the Saturday North Somerset League where the club fields three sides. In the highly competitive Premier 2 league the A team finished eighth, in the East 1 league the B team was seventh, while in the East 2 league the C team finished fourth. On Thursday evenings the club fields two teams in the Bristol and District League, with the A team finishing eighth in league one. Pride of place, however, must go to the B team who topped league four and

therefore win promotion next season. The club hosted its Finals Day when 14 different trophies were “up for grabs” by club members who had competed throughout the season in the knock-out stages. From a point of endurance, mention should be made of the Men’s Triples which lasted for over three hours and was won by John Mead, John Nix and Tony Bevan, who between them had a combined age of almost 250 years! The season finished with a members’ “roll-up” followed by a fish and chip supper. Just to quantify the exercise undertaken, the writer of this article kept a diary note of the number of ends that he played, plus the number of woods bowled during a season. This came to over 1,000 ends, which equates to about 18 miles and over 2,600 woods bowled, which goes to prove that bowls is far from being an old person’s game!

Attacking from the start she worked hard to split the group with early surges before she and Gwenno Hughes attacked again, moving away from the remainder of the peleton. The pair built a healthy lead with the chasers unable to match their speed, then with three laps

Bethany Taylor, centre, on the podium after her win to go Beth broke away from her companion to take an impressive solo win, more than 30 seconds ahead of the chasing bunch.

Keynsham Mencap Family Home “Positive support for those with disability”

Shifts are presently available for evenings and weekends. A full DBS check and references will be sought for successful applicants.

The last game of the Bristol and District Bowls League saw Frys Bowling Club welcome Long Ashton, with Frys eight points behind Ardagh in third place, writes our correspondent. The game got away from Frys in the early stages with Long Ashton taking the lead. Rinks one and three saw Frys in front, but a poor start on rink two left a tight game. After falling nine shots back, rink two then went on a remarkable run scoring 18 unanswered shots to turn the game in Frys’ favour. Rink one held onto a narrow lead to give Frys eight points, eventually winning 58-45, with rink three still to finish. With rink three two shots up in the final end, the darkness

spiced the end up. After some good bowling, Long Ashton held two shots with Frys with the last bowl. With Frys’ skip going tight on the line, it left the rink tied with one point going to both sides. Ardagh picked up two points, so Frys fell one short of third place, but a successful league and cup campaign saw Frys finish fourth with 101 points. The division two title went to Knowle A and Redland Green took the other promotion spot. Scores: Rink 1: 20-18; Rink 2: 24-13; Rink 3: 14-14; Frys 58-45 Long Ashton (9-1). Frys 2016 Season stats: Points: 101; Won: 11; Drew 1; Lost: 6; Shots for: 876; Shots against: 798; Shots diff: 78.
