Skate park lights hit stumbling block From Page 1 lighting would be installed at the site or if young people would face “another winter without lights”? Skate park users launched a campaign five years ago to ask for lighting at the park, saying it would improve their safety in the evenings and handing over a petition of 300 names to Keynsham Town Council. The campaign has since been taken up by Keynsham Now. Town councillors recently proposed installing solar lights not only at the skate park but also at the Bandstand – but a pre-planning application to Bath and North East Somerset Council has hit a stumbling block. A “myriad of objections” from council departments including Parks, Conservation, Landscape and Ecology means the town council would need to commission a range of studies and reports to give the application the best chance of being approved. Town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott said: “Given the objections raised by the B&NES departments of Parks, Conservation, Landscape and Ecology about the possible negative impact this lighting may or may not be perceived to have in respect of wildlife, residents, antisocial behaviour and preservation of the conservation area, the town council is now being ‘put to strict proof’ to demonstrate and evidence that

the solar lighting proposal will not impact negatively on the areas specified. “This will entail the town council having to commission a variety of specialist studies and technical reports at town council expense to ensure that, when a planning application is finally submitted, it contains enough information and professional evidence to ensure that the issues and impacts that have already been raised are either minimised or negated by the proposal and that the planning application has the best chance of being approved amidst the myriad of objections. “The town council would like to reassure the young people of Keynsham generally and Keynsham Now Youth Council that it remains completely understanding and supportive of this initiative. “While it recognises that the best outcome for the young people would have been to have the lighting installed ready for this winter, given the nature and level of objections received, the town council has a duty of care to all the young people to ensure it gathers the appropriate evidence so that when it does submit a planning application it has the best chance of succeeding.” Residents living near the park have previously raised concerns about lighting over fears it could increase antisocial behaviour after dark. One resident told town councillors in 2015: “I’m

he news that matters most to us is often not what’s happening in our part of the country or even in our city. It’s the issues and events that are happening in our own community, involving the people we know and the places we spend most of our time. In this first edition of Keynsham Voice, you’ll find contributions from schools, sports clubs, community groups, local leaders, businesses and individuals. These people and organisations all have one thing in common – Keynsham. Our aim is to provide a means for the community to talk about the issues affecting their town, publicise events, celebrate successes and share views. We hope you will join the conversation. Proposals to improve parking in Keynsham and across Bath and North East Somerset have been drawn up by B&NES Council – and residents are being asked what they think. Anyone hoping to see charges axed in the town’s car parks will be disappointed, it seems, as the new strategy says fees will be “managed to discourage longstay/commuter use”. Meanwhile, free parking in areas where it’s already available will continue, including South Road in Midsomer Norton, Church Road in Radstock, Larkhall and Denmark Street in Bath, in order to “encourage patronage of local shops, restaurants and services”, according to the council. The document, drawn up after consultation with the public last year, also includes a proposal to improve Station Road car park to discourage parking in nearby streets and to review on-street

parking after residents raised safety concerns about vehicles blocking narrow streets. The Balancing Your Needs parking strategy document is now available to read online and at libraries and council one-stop shops and residents are being asked to share their views. Councillor Mark Shelford, Cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “The demand for parking, and how the council can best manage this demand in the interests of residents, businesses and our environment, is one of the biggest issues affecting

communities across Bath and North East Somerset. No single initiative can on its own reduce congestion, improve air quality and manage the increasing demand on our road networks as the area grows. Therefore, what we need are joined-up plans and incentives that encourage people to choose sustainable transport options wherever possible. At the same time, we also need to consider the important role that parking plays in supporting our local economy. “Our proposed parking strategy therefore seeks to balance the needs of all residents, road users and local businesses, and is just one aspect of our wider approach to managing congestion while supporting economic growth.” l Read the full consultation report and give feedback online at www.bathnes.gov.uk/ parkingstrategy. The consultation runs until October 23.

Businesses to bring different flavour to Employment is soon set to return to Keynsham’s former chocolate factory as the first tenants of the site’s commercial space have been revealed. And news that a herbal tea and supplements firm, an unnamed Bath company and St Augustine’s GP surgery will all be taking space in Block C – now called the Chocolate Factory – comes as the first residents of the converted site prepare to move into their apartments at the end of October. More than half of the 100,000 sq ft of office accommodation has now been let by Alder King, acting on behalf of St Monica Trust, which has redeveloped the former Frys factory into a mix of assisted living apartments, a care home, retail and leisure space called the Chocolate Quarter. David Williams, chief executive of the St Monica Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first tenants to the Chocolate Factory and look

and has plans to continue this long into the future. It was therefore critical that we found an office space that could match our ambitions of improving people’s lives through the power of herbs while retaining our links with the Bristol area. The newly refurbished Chocolate Factory provides Pukka with an excellent solution and we are extremely excited to be taking occupation in spring of 2018.” Meanwhile St Augustine’s Medical Practice will be taking up part of the ground floor when it relocates from its current premises in Station Road. Dr Nick Woodward, senior partner at St Augustine’s Medical Practice, said: “We are delighted to be moving the Keynsham branch of our practice to The Chocolate Factory. These modern premises will offer superb facilities to both our patients and staff. While retaining our Saltford surgery, the new premises will offer more parking to patients

and there will be a regular bus to service to the Cadbury site. This is great for our patients and enables our practice to support Keynsham’s ever enlarging population.” Simon Price, head of agency at Alder King, said: “The level of interest in the development has been very strong and this is reflected in the quality of occupiers that we have already secured at the scheme. The range of on-site amenities and proximity to Keynsham Station have proved very popular with office occupiers.” Construction is due to be completed on the commercial space by December – while in the residential blocks, work is drawing to a close and the first residents are just weeks away from moving in. A St Monica Trust spokesperson said the scheme had been their fastestselling development ever, with around 55 per cent of apartments sold off-plan.

n NEWS Council to launch business forum for town A new forum to represent every business in Keynsham is being launched by the town council. As part of the Neighbourhood Development Plan process, which needs input from people working in and running businesses in Keynsham as well as residents, councillors have agreed to form a new organisation to provide support to these businesses. Town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott said: “One of the important findings to come out of the Neighbourhood Development process to date is that Keynsham currently lacks a focused business network to support and represent all the different types of Keynsham business operating in the town, including those who are self-employed.” She added: “The town council felt the most effective way forwards would be to offer all the various initiatives the chance of support and representation via a Keynsham-wide business forum and in the process prevent duplication of effort.”

The town council previously ran Keynsham Music Festival in-house, continuing to offer financial and administrative support to enable it to grow into an independent organisation, and hopes to replicate this model with the business forum, Dr Scott said. As part of the initiative, town councillor Lisa O’Brien has proposed a free business directory for distribution to all residents and said: “After 28 years of living in Keynsham, and having recently interacted with local High Street traders about their current problems, which include the impact of the one-way system, I realised that it is really important that all residents are made aware of the wide variety of businesses in Keynsham. “We need to help the Keynsham community to help Keynsham business and empower residents to be able to source the local businesses available on their doorsteps.”

ASK THE VET with Keynsham Veterinary Centre

Why is my rabbit aggressive?

R

abbits are considered docile and passive creatures. However, it is not uncommon to see aggressive behaviour that can be surprising, or even alarming, to a new owner. Dominance is probably the most common cause of aggression. Rabbits can fight to establish dominance within a group or to keep newcomers out. Neutering can reduce this but may not be sufficient to completely eliminate the aggressive behaviour. Rabbits can also fight over resources like favourite snacks, food bowls and water bottles. A good rule of thumb is to provide extra – so provide for as many pets as you own, plus one more. Rabbits may also be aggressive towards people. Again the rabbit may be trying to establish dominance, but it could also be the result of pain or illness, or even learned behaviour. For example, children can sometimes be over-enthusiastic with pets and may inadvertently create a

certain behaviour. Another cause of aggression towards people could be improper socialisation, or even a previous trauma that may create an aversive behaviour. Every rabbit is different and management of aggression can vary widely depending on its cause. It is important to try to read a rabbit’s body language as rabbits may try to communicate some clues. It is also extremely important to rule out medical reasons. When a rabbit is showing an aggressive behaviour for no apparent reason, this should warrant a trip to the vet, who will perform a complete evaluation. If you have concerns about your pet rabbit, and would like further advice, do not hesitate to call Keynsham Veterinary Surgery on 0117 986 7700, or Highcroft Veterinary Hospital on 01275 832410 and ask to speak to one of our rabbit-savvy vets. Keynsham’s future... what’s your view? Keynsham’s Neighbourhood Development Plan – a blueprint that will give residents real power over future development – has reached a crucial stage. This month residents will receive a survey asking what is most important to them, from transport and housing to shops and employment. Keynsham Town Council explains why it is so important to have a say. Keynsham is getting bigger… and there are even more plans for growth over the next 20 years. According to the West of England Joint Spatial Strategy, at least 1,100 new homes will be built in Keynsham between now and 2036. However, that number could rise even further (by up to 50 per cent), depending upon the B&NES Local Plan currently in preparation, which seeks to identify and allocate sites to meet the housing and economic development requirements established by the West of England Joint Spatial Plan. But how will this impact on the people who already live and work in Keynsham? Will favourite green spaces or existing buildings be lost? Will there be enough parking or other facilities for the increased population? How can Keynsham retain its market town character and avoid becoming part of an urban conurbation stretching from Bristol to Bath? What improvements can be made to the town centre to support a local shopping experience and what type of new businesses, both retail and industrial, should be offered space in the town and where? Will town centre traffic and congestion increase/decrease and if so how will the air quality be affected? What provision is being made to generate employment opportunities in the town or provide affordable accommodation… especially for our young people who are the future of Keynsham? These are just some of the concerns already raised by residents participating in the following five topic groups that meet regularly as part of the Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan process: l Roads, Transport, Parking and Infrastructure

l Recreation, Leisure, Sport, Health and Community l Heritage, Culture, Tourism, Marketing and Development of the Built Environment l Sustainability, Environmental and Ecological l Business, Employment and Economic Growth Taking notice of the community’s views The Neighbourhood Development Plan process was launched in April 2016 by Keynsham Town Council as part of a new government initiative to enable local people to influence the planning and development of the area in which they live and work for the next 15 to 20 years. The end result is a document (Neighbourhood Development Plan) that contains a series of statements or policies setting out what development is acceptable in Keynsham and for what reasons. Once approved, the plan will have legal force, which developers and local authority planners will have to take notice of, but it will not be approved unless the plan also contains evidence to show that the issues and policies identified reflect the concerns of the majority of people who live and/or work in Keynsham. Dr Cheryl Scott, town clerk, explains further: “Since the launch last year, the five topic groups comprising volunteers who live and/or work in Keynsham have been identifying and defining the issues that they think are important to the community. The issues will be used to underwrite the planning policies and aspirations for Keynsham that will constitute the final Neighbourhood Development Plan document. “Although much work has been done by the topic groups

n NEWS to identify the issues from which the planning policies will be written, it is important to be sure that they are speaking for the majority of local people. So to ensure the NDP is ‘on track’, the town council will be distributing a survey in mid-October, to find out what things are most important to local people. “It’s important that EVERY person who lives or works in Keynsham (no matter their age) has their input into the plan so although one paper copy of the questionnaire will be sent to each house, there will be further paper copies available at various outlets/events in Keynsham, including the farmers’ market and the town council offices. The survey will also be available online via a PDF or electronic survey from the town council website and will run until the end of 2017.” To help people complete their surveys, there will also be a series of meetings about the NDP, the progress to date, and a question session. Everyone is most welcome to come and discover a bit more about the

People shared their ideas and concerns on Post-it notes at the launch of the Neighbourhood Development Plan NDP. The meetings are planned as follows: l Key Centre – November 1, 6pm l Fear Hall – November 8, 2pm l Community at 67 – TBC l The Space – November 23, 6pm l Wellsway – TBC l Somerdale – TBC l St Dunstan’s Church – November 28, 6pm l St Francis Church – December 6, 6pm What happens to the results of the survey? Deb Cooper, the NDP co-

ordinator who has been employed by the town council to project manage the Neighbourhood Development Plan, explains: “Once collated and examined, the issues will be further considered by the topic groups and used to discuss and construct the planning policies that should comprise the plan, which will then go back out to the community for its input. “Some issues may require further research or in-depth studies to provide evidence to support the community’s

concerns. The results will also be used to produce more focused surveys in 2018 for specific groups such as young people and business…. so this is very much a ‘work in progress’ and it will be some time yet before the plan is completed. “In the meantime we would like to encourage everyone to complete a survey as the more people who do, the more chance the plan will have of being approved by the inspector because it accurately reflects the views of the whole community.” To get involved... If you would like to get involved in the Neighbourhood Development Plan, please contact the ndp co-ordinator, Deb Cooper by email at ndp@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk For further information, please visit the town council’s website www.keynsham-tc.gov. uk or contact Dr Cheryl Scott, town clerk at Keynsham Town Council, 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham, Bristol BS31 1HF, call 0117 986 8683 or email townclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk

‘Divert HGVs away from town’s roads’

Keynsham councillors are pushing for tougher rules on the routes heavy goods vehicles can use to access new housing developments on the southern edge of the town. Concern has been raised about lorries using busy Charlton Road and St Ladoc Road to travel through the town to and from building sites at Parkhouse Lane. Barratt Homes is working on its new Bilbie Green estate, while Persimmon and Bloor Homes are each planning to build 100 new homes on neighbouring land – with Bloor getting the go-ahead in August. Now calls have been made to Bath and North East Somerset Council to insist that HGVs must only approach and leave the sites via the A37 Wells Road. Councillor Alan Hale, Keynsham South ward councillor and the council’s road safety advocate, said residents in the area had already suffered years of “significant problems” with

HGVs accessing the Meadows site and shouldn’t have to “endure” more. He said he wrote to B&NES’ divisional director for development to voice his concerns some months ago – and is now making a fresh appeal for restrictions. Mr Hale said: “Many parts of Keynsham have been severely impacted by a large number of HGVs and earth-moving vehicles for some eight years now and when the two developments at the top of Charlton Road emerged I wrote to the council’s senior planning officers stating that in my view all HGV traffic serving those developments must approach the site and indeed leave the site via the Wells Road. Charlton Road has now become a significantly busy road and the residents of St Ladoc Road and Charlton Road should not have to endure several more years of more HGVs affecting their quality of life. “The Meadows development,

which is now almost complete, demonstrated that allowing development to take place without good vehicle access causes significant problems, both for those neighbouring the development as well as new residents.” He added: “I recently wrote to the planning officer who dealt with the application about this issue, only to find that no condition has been imposed, as I had requested, requiring construction traffic to approach from the Wells Road. However, I will continue lobbying for traffic to approach these developments from Wells Road and not via the town’s roads, adding to wear and tear on the roads and traffic congestion in the town.” Fellow Keynsham councillor Charles Gerrish added: “I have also received complaints from residents in both Charlton Road and St Ladoc Road relating to the speed and volume of large vehicles that appear to

have originated from these development sites and I would totally support my colleague Alan in his approach to the council. In addition, I have also raised the matter with the council’s new cabinet member for transport.” Meanwhile, officers at B&NES recorded 434 HGVs using Keynsham as a through route during a one-day study from 4am to 10pm – 114 of which exceeded the 7.5-tonne limit. Improving signage, lobbying police to enforce weight restrictions and contacting haulage firms that repeatedly flout the restrictions are among measures to tackle the issue. The study was one of several recently undertaken into transport issues in Keynsham, including a relief road to the south of the town and safety on Charlton Road – the results can be seen at www.bathnes.gov.uk/ services/parking-and-travel/ transport-plans-and-policies/ future-growth-keynshamtransport-study

n NEWS More than £1 million has been earmarked to look into a range of ambitious transport projects, including an A4 Metrobus connecting Keynsham and Bristol and a new road linking Avon Mill Lane to the A4. The West of England Combined Authority (WECA), made up of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council and chaired by metro mayor Tim Bowles, met last month to decide whether to fund a series of business cases on a number of transport schemes around the region. The committee agreed to make £1.2 million available to investigate the potential projects to support the delivery of the West of England Joint Spatial Plan (JSP), which sets out the housing and employment land, transport and other infrastructure needed as the West of England region grows up to 2036. Adventurous Tricia celebrates golden anniversary with a trek for Richard A Keynsham grandmother is about to embark on her fourth fundraising trek, hiking along Peru’s Inca Trail in memory of her husband in what would have been their golden wedding anniversary year. Adventurous Tricia Hembrough is undertaking the challenge in honour of husband Richard, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, and all money raised will go towards much-needed research into the condition. Tricia has already climbed Kilimanjaro, reached the snow line on the Cotopaxi volcano in Ecuador and walked the Great Wall of China – but the altitude as her group makes its way to Machu Picchu could be a real challenge, she says, with heights of up to 4,200m. The highlight for her, though,

Tricia Hembrough will be seeing the sun rise through the Sun Gate over a magnificent panorama at Machu Picchu. Tricia, who worked as a dentist, met Richard when they were teenagers and he was working as a carpenter for her family’s firm. They had four children together and

Richard, who became a biology and woodwork teacher, lived with Parkinson’s for 30 years, undergoing GDNF treatment as part of research into the condition. Tricia said: “Richard coped with the problems with great fortitude, humour and optimism, and took part in a clinical trial which gave results being used for current research. He was passionate about research into the causes and, hopefully, the ultimate cure for the condition and I have contributed by fundraising in various ways – I make a lot of jam!” As well as her expeditions, Tricia has continued her support for Parkinson’s UK and its work by turning her homegrown produce into jams, pickles and chutneys for sale, and by selling plants and providing lunches,

with all proceeds going to the charity. Anyone who would like to support Tricia can donate online at www.justgiving.com/triciahembrough1 l A support group for people with Parkinson’s and their families is celebrating a year since it launched regular meetings in Keynsham. Parkinson’s UK Bath and District Branch holds meetings once a month on a Tuesday at the Talbot Inn, Bath Road, from 10.30am. A spokesperson said: “Our numbers have remained steady but we would like to grow in order to offer a chance to find familiar and friendly faces to enjoy the chat, which is our ‘talking therapy’.” The next meeting is on October 31 – contact Hazel on 0117 336 0476 for more details.

Nikki Howell during the wingwalk from RFC Rendcomb Airfield

Nikki rises to ‘awesome’ wingwalk challenge Dressed as Superwoman, a Keynsham mother-of-one has completed a charity wingwalk, smashing her fundraising target for the Alzheimer’s Society. Nikki Howell took to the skies over Gloucestershire, strapped to the wings of a bi-plane for an experience she described as “awesome”. At 500ft it was hard to catch her breath, she said, but the

views were also breathtaking. Before the challenge, Nikki had hoped to raise £1,000 for the cause in memory of her father – but support from family and friends has brought in £1,773 to her delight. Nikki, who publishes poetry online as The Keynsham Poet, has written a poem about the experience – see Letters on Page 14.

n NEWS As the 50th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1968 approaches, plans are being put together to remember its impact on local communities – and to prepare for similar events in future. The West of England Rural Network (WERN) is calling on residents in Keynsham and around the Chew Valley to get involved in commemorating the milestone on July 10 and 11, 2018, while also raising awareness of the River Chew and how it affects people’s lives today. On July 10, 1968, record rainfall caused a huge wall of water to sweep along the river overnight, destroying bridges, including Keynsham’s County Bridge, flooding around 250 homes and, in Bath Hill, claiming the lives of three people who were swept off the bridge in their car, while five others lost their lives elsewhere. Many householders across the area had to be rescued by boat and schools and village halls were opened to house the evacuees. Once the water receded, a massive clean-up

I work on Market Walk in Keynsham, part of the new precinct. This has become an unpleasant place to be when kids are not at school. It has become a very noisy and foulmouthed place with the number of children and kids who congregate the area. In my opinion is it is also now a dangerous place to walk, given that it seems to have been taken over as a bike and scooter race track. There is no control from anyone in authority and if you approach them to move on, there is abuse or contempt in their response or they completely ignore the request. Given the size of the park and its facilities, it is a sad reflection of the youth here in Keynsham.

October, 2017 It might be an idea to introduce a cycling ban in the area with a level of monitoring of the situation on a regular basis. The way they act at the moment, someone will get hurt. Then it will be too late to do anything. Details supplied

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans Recently I attended the Connecting Communities meeting, which is held in the meeting space of the Civic Centre above the library. For those who have never heard of this, it’s a public meeting to talk about Keynsham. There is often a presentation of upcoming events, matters of interest or services available, followed by other issues that affect the area. As I presented the crime figures and policing strategy for this quarter this is the first time that we have had a noticeable rise in crime in the area year on year. This can be explained quite easily with the expansion to Keynsham as a result of ongoing developments and the reduction in policing. As part of this increase we have seen a spike in thefts of pedal cycles and thefts from sheds.

We have been really lucky in Keynsham with the level of policing and we are now looking to adapt our policing style to suit this. In real terms this means incidents with low solvability are not investigated, freeing up officers’ time. These are the incidents that have no lines of inquiry – of course, if there are house-to-house, CCTV or other inquiries that can be made these will be completed prior to filing. I have been banging my drum about the theft of pedal cycles in Keynsham – as a location we are currently being targeted and cycles, whether locked or unlocked, are being stolen. If you see anyone acting suspiciously around cycles, please let us know. Basic information can be really important in identifying a suspect or offender. Pay attention to anything that stands out – think about the clothing their age, gender, ethnicity and direction of travel to and from the location. With this information we can review local CCTV and identify suspects. There is a small minority of people committing these incidents so

basic information can really help us in locating them and bringing them to justice. Other problems in the area are theft from and theft of motor vehicles. You’d be surprised how many times incidents of theft from motor vehicles are occurring after the occupant has failed to secure their car and offenders, just from checking a door handle, have gained access. As the nights get longer it affords criminals the cover that they need to operate. If we can all be a little more vigilant in our security practices we can help avoid being a victim of crime. The thefts of motor vehicles have no specific pattern, it’s not one sort of vehicle or contained to a particular location, and again the above will help. If your vehicle is older, some form of additional security may be a good idea, parking the vehicle in illuminated places, or fitting security lighting on driveways could also help. We have had a slight change to the policing team in Keynsham with the introduction of a dedicated Police Sergeant for the

Nickimay’s aesthetics Nicola Martin (Registered Nurse)

area, Jon Bagnowiec 2601. He will be working from Keynsham Civic Centre. He has a lot of experience and brings fresh eyes to the beat, already putting in place a number of changes to make the team more visible. With that change we also have a proactive beat team in the B&NES area. They joined our local team on a successful misuse of drugs warrant this month and we will be looking to gain their help in dealing with other problems. On a happier note, you should see the PCSOs around our schools more often, we are trying to get out into the community during the busier periods, and look out for our beat surgeries, where we invite you to come and discuss anything you need to with us. These will be advertised locally. If you need information on the local beat team and points of contact, please go to the Avon and Somerset force website’s neighbourhood pages, put in your postcode and you can see the team. Or to report incidents for non-emergencies, call 101 – for emergencies please call 999.

success... to a spot of bargain hunting

Scouts fresh from a caving expedition in the Mendips away with bargains, perhaps something for their own home or perhaps something to upcycle and sell on, the list is endless. On top of that there is fun and laughter – indeed, some people stay all day for the entertainment. Have you something to

donate? Take it directly to Scout HQ in Ashton Way any evening, 6.30-9pm, from Monday, November 6, or to arrange a collection simply email auction@1stkeynshamscouts. org.uk or call 0117 986 4242 (thank you to the Keynsham Hearing Centre for your support

in this). We will accept items of furniture, china, toys, bric a brac, CDs, household goods, garden equipment, musical instruments, books, tools, bikes. Unfortunately, we cannot accept TVs, computer screens, gas appliances, clothing or beds. If unsure, just ring and ask Would you like to buy? This is what happens on the day at Scout HQ. The main auction room opens for viewing at 9am and bidding starts at 9.30am. The whole process is fun and even children can bid. It will bring a smile to your face. In the Bargain Marquee – it wouldn’t be a Scout event without a tent! – you can make an offer on any items here and take it away, no bidding required. First come, first served. In the Book, Toy, CD & Record sales room there will be a huge range for you to make an offer on and take away when a price is agreed, again no bidding required.

Refreshments are available all day, including hot food and homemade cakes – everything that you would want to keep you going. So there is something for everyone and it really is a place to bargain hunt. Come and see..

Caving – more than just a dark hole

Crawling into a dark hole in the ground is just too much for some people – muddy, wet, dark, perhaps a little scary. Recently Scouts from Keynsham held a series of caving expeditions, exploring the world that exists beneath the Mendip hills. Did you know that some of the caves have multiple levels? The Scouts and their leaders have been learning how to navigate using cave maps and how working as a team is so important. Some of the Scouts have gained their Cavers badge and at least one leader has gained their permit to lead this exciting activity.

n YOUTH & EDUCATION A Keynsham schoolboy with a passion for eels – and who got his whole school to dance the “conger” – has been shortlisted for an award by a national nature charity. Nine-year-old Tyler Ingleheart is one of four youngsters in the finals in the Youth Category of the 2017 UK Awards for Biological Recording and Information Sharing, which aim to celebrate people helping to improve understanding of the UK’s wildlife. Former St Keyna Primary School pupil Tyler was nominated by teacher Larissa Roberts for his work to inspire his classmates about the natural world – and particularly eels. Tyler was involved in all aspects of the school’s participation in Spawn to be Wild, a project that saw pupils caring for elvers at school before releasing them at Blagdon Lake. At Tyler’s request, the eels’ arrival was celebrated by the whole school with an Eel Day, during which pupils danced the “conger”, built models of eels, wrote about and painted various

species and even designed eelpatterned wallpaper. Tyler has carried out regular bug hunts in the school grounds, in Keynsham’s parks and on holidays, researching and identifying his finds before sharing the results with his classmates. He was also a member of the St Keyna Green Team, which focuses on conservation, natural history and environmental issues, as well as part of the school aquarium care team. Ms Roberts said: “His sharing of his observations and enthusiasm has been infectious during the past two years and I feel he has encouraged a whole school to feel passionately about freshwater life and in particular eels – animals which would very likely be overlooked by most people and organisations without a champion for them.”

The winners of the awards, which have been developed by the National Biodiversity Network, the National Forum for Biological Recording and the

Biological Records Centre, will be announced at a ceremony during the NBN’s annual conference in Cardiff on November 16. Find out more at https://nbn.org.uk

Dramatic happenings in Brislington! The Bristol School of Performing Arts (BSPA) is currently enjoying one of the most successful periods in its 45-year history! Through its management and staff, the school has always enjoyed a very close association with the professional theatre, with its artistic director John Redgrave having directed productions in the West End and provinces for in excess of 40 years! The school’s teaching faculty carries a similar pedigree, with each and every member notching up many years of performing in both theatre and television. BSPA is also extremely proud of its student success rate, with many appearing in both the West End and provinces. In recent months Santiago Weston has appeared as Gavroche in Les Miserables and in the national tour of Mary Poppins. Ex-student Madeleine Smith has joined the London cast of Mamma Mia! to cover the part of Sophie, while

Many students and former students of BSPA are enjoying success on the stage, including in the West End her sister Emilie is playing Portia the Otter in Wind in the Willows at the London Palladium. This year’s Christmas pantomime season sees exstudent Lauren Hampton playing principal girl Alice Fitzwarren in

Dick Whittington opposite John Barrowman and The Krankies at Manchester’s Opera House Theatre. Congratulations also go to 32 lucky students chosen to represent BSPA when they

Ceremony celebrates new classrooms Pupils welcomed some special guests to school to celebrate the official opening of their new classroom block. Members of the school council at Saltford C of E Primary gathered to watch chair of Bath and North East Somerset Council Cherry Beath cut the ribbon outside the six-classroom building on September 15. They were joined by councillors and officers from B&NES, school governors, the architects, the contractors who worked on the project and North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, who were all given a tour of the site following the ceremony. The £1.8million teaching block has replaced some temporary buildings in poor condition and will help meet rising demand for school places in the area. Pupils have been using the new classrooms since the start

Councillor Cherry Beath and MP Jacob Rees-Mogg meet pupils in the new teaching block at Saltford C of E Primary of the school year. Dawn Elliott, headteacher of Saltford C of E Primary School, said: “We are delighted with the design and construction of the new sixclassroom block. The learning spaces are light and airy and we

like the contemporary feel of the building. Staff and pupils are inspired by these outstanding facilities. We would like to thank everyone associated with the project.“ The project was funded by

Bath and North East Somerset Council and designed by BBA Architects of Bath, while the main contractor was H Mealing and Sons of Bath. As part of the project and in negotiation with Saltford Parish Council, a new fenced sports pitch, which can be used by the community out of school hours, has been provided at the park next to the school Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, said: “It is wonderful to see the children and staff settling in to these lovely new classrooms, which are giving Saltford Primary the learning environment it deserves. “The headteacher, governors and parents have shown vision and determination in driving forward developments at the school, including a new ‘secret garden’ and early years play area as well as the sports pitch. Congratulations to them all.”

This month’s photograph shows the Regency Café at the start of Station Road – the Norton Tax Shop and Cocoa Hair Design now occupy these premises. The picture appears to have been taken in the mid-1960s, when the façade was being repaired. The café was renamed the Pickwick in about 1975 and closed a few years later.

Trail’s over but it’s not the end The town’s Great Floral Bike Trail has brought delight to so many for months – and now, with residents’ support, it can help families who use the services of Children’s Hospice South West, too, says Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James Our Great Floral Bike Trail has come to a glorious end and now a great opportunity has arisen that will allow people to have a permanent reminder of the trail. We are currently liaising with

The bikes from the Great Floral Bike Trail are being sold for charity the bike trail owners and asking them if they would like to donate their bikes for sale to be used to raise funds for our chosen charity Children’s Hospice South West. Please contact Dawn Drury, deputy town clerk at Keynsham Town Council, 15-17 Temple Street, to see a list of the bikes that are available for donations. Bikes may come with or without

the planters, depending on the bike owners. Anyone who is successful in purchasing a bike will need to make arrangements to collect their bike. The Bike Trail has proved to be a wonderful project and has certainly contributed to the floral “wow factor” throughout Keynsham. We have had visitors from surrounding areas coming

to Keynsham to take part in the trail. If you have a favourite bike that has taken your eye during the trail and would like to make a donation, you can either message us and let us know the bike number or pop into the town council office in Temple Street and give them your details and bike choice. On behalf of the Keynsham in Bloom committee, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone involved in the Bike Trail, including the many residents who supplied their own bikes and displayed them for the public to enjoy. Keynsham in Bloom has again been invited by Keynsham Rotary to take part in the Purple4Polio Campaign. The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child to indicate they have received their life-saving oral

polio vaccine. This year we have chosen the area around Manor Road Playing fields and will be planting crocus corms around the perimeters of the playing fields. In the past, a number of residents have approached us and asked if we would consider a spring bulb planting scheme to enhance their neighbourhood. It is hoped that the purple crocus will make a welcoming splash of colour during the early spring months at this spot. We are currently looking at planting the bulbs during the during the autumn half-term week commencing Monday, October 23. Once a date has been confirmed we will be putting up posters advertising the event. This is a great opportunity for residents, and particularly children, to take part in the activity and help to enhance their local area.

Clarice lives on £1-a-day budget to help Ethiopian villagers grow their own food Members of a Keynsham church have raised almost £1,000 to help a community in Ethiopia grow their own food – with one parishioner challenging herself to live on just £1 a day for a week. Inspired by the fundraising appeal at St Dunstan’s Church to support the residents of Sebeya in the African country, Clarice Corfield asked people to sponsor her as she spent seven days living on her tight budget. The money raised in Keynsham will help fund reservoirs and water pipes in Sebeya, a village of around 9,000 people where most earn a living through farming in the arid landscape of the Tigray region. Speaking about her challenge, Clarice said: “It was not so easy, lots of rice, lentils and bread for five days with the occasional

‘treat’ of a fried egg. With only £1 a day you cannot eat anything fresh or dairy products, let alone meat or fish. “For me it was only five days but for millions of people it is for life. There are many who have less than that to spend on food. “So far, the parish has raised almost £800 – with more still to be counted. I am extremely grateful for the generosity of the people who sponsored me.” The parishioners raised money through events and activities, including an Ethiopian evening with a talk from an Ethiopian speaker and food from the country, as well as a penny trail, where youngsters collected copper coins and laid them out into a long trail at the church. The link between St Dunstan’s and Sebeya began a year ago to

help fund training for people in the village to build reservoirs and install pipes to help them get access to water year-round. The two communities have now struck up a relationship, which they hope to continue into the future. Clarice said: “We have received thank you messages and updates from the community of Sebeya. We find this twoway communication very important and so children from our children’s liturgy group have been sending cards to the children in Sebeya. “Our parish will continue to raise funds to enable Sebeya to have this reliable access to water.” The link was created as part of the overseas development agency CAFOD’s Connect 2 Ethiopia scheme.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Annual general meeting

The society’s AGM on September 18 was well attended. Chairman Richard Dyson reported on a successful year, with good attendances at the evening meetings. Visits to places of historic interest during the summer were also well supported, with the trip to Badminton House oversubscribed. Achievements included publication of the second pair of the society’s History Walks leaflets; these are proving popular and can be obtained at the town council offices. Looking forwards, the society continues work on research for a book on the recent history of Keynsham and Saltford and on the project to re-site the County Bridge Stone or “Abbot’s Chair” in the Memorial Park next year. After the formal meeting, there was a showing of the DVD on the history of Keynsham and Saltford prepared for the Keynsham Music Festival anniversary event earlier in the year. This comprised a selection of images from the society’s archive together with short clips of cinefilm taken in the 1940s.

Visit to West Somerset

Last month, members of the society and guests enjoyed a coach trip to west Somerset. A varied day started with a call at Watchet for a coffee and a stroll round the harbour, before travelling the few miles to Cleeve Abbey, near Washford, where we had a guided tour of the remains of the Cistercian Abbey. This is something of an undiscovered gem among historic sites in the county, with surviving buildings

The tiled floor of the earliest refectory gives an idea of what the floor of parts of Keynsham Abbey might have looked like. In the afternoon, we moved on to Dunster, with its distinctive yarn market, where members

visited the castle or explored the old streets and interesting buildings such as the dovecote.

History of Broadmead

This prominent three-storey building was constructed in 1747 and takes its name from the bright shiny door-knocker on the front door; the knocker was made at the brass mill down the road. In 1861 the house was owned by Isaac Williams, a solicitor, and called Mount Cottage. Subsequently, it became the premises of a beer retailer, a grocer, and then an inn. The first post office in Saltford opened here at the Brass Knocker Inn and, except for a two-year spell in South View House, it remained on the site until 1947, when the post office moved to its current

Monday, October 16, sees the start of the society’s new programme of monthly evening talks on a range of subjects relating to local history. These meetings are open to all, with admission free to society members. They are held at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, starting at 7.30pm, and the first one is on the subject of “Broadmead Before the Shops”, which will be of interest to many Bristolians. If you haven’t been to our meetings before, it is a good time to give it a try. For details of the society’s full talks programme, visit www. keysalthist.org.uk

Volunteers back Get Online Week

Harvest sees return of popular stallholder Keynsham Farmers’ Market will have a fitting way to celebrate the harvest season, with the return of a popular stallholder. The monthly event has been without a veg stall for some time, but on Saturday, October 14, Sue Weaver of Portbridge Vegetables is returning with her homegrown produce. A spokesperson for Somerset Farmers’ Markets said: “Based just up the road at Chew Magna, Sue was a huge draw at the market and many customers expressed their disappointment when she took a break a couple of

However, she is keen to return and looking forward to meeting up with customers old and new.” Alongside Sue and the regular stallholders, Transition Keynsham will be giving away cooking apples and hopefully producing juice on the day, while a new vegetarian stall and a specialist hummus stall will also be joining existing traders in the run-up to Christmas. For more information, visit www.somersetfarmersmarkets. co.uk or follow Somerset Farmers’ Markets on Facebook.

A local community centre is inviting Keynsham residents to learn to do one new thing online in October with free help from its volunteers. Community at 67, in Queens Road, is hosting an event to coincide with national Get Online Week, which aims to help people get more from the internet, whether it’s contacting friends, shopping or making an appointment. Anyone can drop into the centre on Saturday, October 7, from 10am to 1pm, where there will be plenty of free, friendly support Adrian Inker, vice chair at Community at 67, said: “Almost everyone has heard about some of the ways the internet can help you save money, save time, and make life easier and more fun. But if you’re not confident using a computer, tablet or

smartphone, or you’ve heard about some of the dangers of being online, it can be difficult to take that next step. “At the event we will be showing people what the internet can be used for, including some basic tasks such as shopping or finding information, to the more exciting aspects such as how they can speak to people across the world using Skype or with Google Earth look at the house they grew up in, wherever that is in the world! “Getting the most out of the internet doesn’t have to be scary. We think that doing just one thing online is all you need to do to get started.” Anyone who would like more information can call 07737 742300. Community at 67 also runs a weekly internet café on Fridays from 9am to noon, offering one-to-one help.

ctober is a time of change: our summer visiting birds have departed and we are just about to see the influx of wintering birds in the countryside. Thrushes such as redwings and fieldfares will arrive to feed in the fields and hedgerows, with large quantities of wading birds, including Northern shovellers and common teals, migrating to spend their winter locally in our lakes at Chew Valley. But there are also birds in our garden that will not have been present during the summer months; many of the common birds we see will have come in from Europe to escape colder weather. If we are lucky we may see rarer birds, such as the small, delicate siskins, or even a brambling, a colourful relative of our common chaffinch. Large mixed feeding flocks of tits and finches now do the rounds of our bird feeders, often following a

And as a month known for all things Hallowe’en what better way to begin our season than with a talk on a mammal associated with this pagan festival – the bat. And more specifically the greater and lesser horseshoe bats. Not the subject of horror or fear but amazing creatures of the night. In their talk Bats in the Belfry, Ray Canham and Graeme McLaren will be telling us about the maternity roost for the bats at Woodchester Mansion near Stroud. The greater horseshoe bats are the subject of what is believed to be the longest study by a single person of any mammal, and the talk will feature the research that has been undertaken by Dr Roger Ransome since 1959. THE BIG PICTURE

Film review with Harrison Thorne

No clowning around – this is horror done right It (15) As a film that has gone through development hell since 2009, It is a character-driven, expertly directed and, of course, scary film. Envisioned as the second attempt at an adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel (the first was a 1990 TV series starring Tim Curry), It follows only the first half of the 1,138-page novel focused on the central characters “The Losers Club” as they fight the demon masquerading as a clown called Pennywise during their childhood. All round the performances are spectacular, once again proving (as did 2016’s Stranger Things) that child acting can still be done fantastically given the right script and direction, with Jaeden Lieberher giving an inspiring performance as the leader of the

October, 2017

kids who seeks revenge against Pennywise due to a personal tragedy. The standouts among the performers are Finn Wolfhard as Richie, whose rapid-fire delivery and excellent comedic timing elevate him above the other kids, and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, who gives a truly terrifying performance as a clown who is nearly as memorable as the likes of Heath Ledger as the Joker. However, the biggest success of It is the perfect balance between

storytelling and horror moments unlike the majority of horror films in the last decade, which provided a much-needed breath of fresh air for the genre. This also allows the audience to take the time to appreciate the more frightening scenes as well as understand each character’s motivations thus making Warner Bros them more fleshed out and relatable. The only flaw that stood out to me as a viewer was the slightly accelerated pace during the second and third acts but even that is more than justifiable as the film had no choice but to quicken the pace in order to not overly extend the running time. It stands out as one of the best Stephen King adaptions available and I am eagerly anticipating It: Chapter Two in 2019.  4.5/5

Perfect time to stub out smoking habit? Smokers in Keynsham and Saltford are being urged to stub out the habit this month as part of the sixth annual Stoptober Challenge. More than one million people have taken part across the country, achieving 28 smokefree days, which makes them five times more likely to quit for good, according to research. Councillor Vic Pritchard, B&NES Cabinet member for adult care and health, said: “There are lots of ways to stop smoking and Stoptober can help you choose the best way for you. There’s lots of free support available through various social media platforms, face-to-face help, or via a dedicated app.” Events will be taking place across the area, including at Somerdale Pavilion. Infinity From left, volunteers Jill Harman, Sylv Box and Betty Penny enjoying a welcome cup of tea at the end of the final Sunday tea event

Afternoon tea team can put their feet up! Once again the opening of Compton Dando’s village church for afternoon teas during the summer has proved successful, this year raising £1,214.30 for church funds, writes Ros Anstey. For the past six years members of St Mary’s Church have been opening the doors every Sunday afternoon from May until the end of August, serving tea and cake. One of the organisers, Fiona

Gregg Smith, said: “We are thrilled with the amount raised. I think we must have had over 600 visitors.” Fellow organiser Jenny Davis added: “We are very grateful to everyone who so kindly gave their time to make delicious cakes and serve teas every Sunday. “A big thank you to everyone involved, and look forward to seeing you all next year.”

Is the universe infinite? Wise men say that’s not true, But ask them to say where the end is, And you’ll find that they’ve not got a clue. How many universes are there? We only know of the one, There’s maybe an infinite number, When all is said and done. And if there’s an infinite number, Not just one, two or three, Are there infinite worlds just like this one? And infinite versions of me? And how did they come into being? Did they each have their own Big Bang Boom? And where are they? Trillions of light years away?

Or maybe right here in this room? There can’t be much room in Infinity, Overcrowding must be a menace, It’s full of monkeys with typewriters, Writing The Merchant of Venice. You can’t travel far in Infinity, You can’t even walk down the street, The roads and the pavements all come to end, It’s the place where all parallels meet. It’s doing my head all this thinking, So I’ll leave it to those who are clever, If I sit here and try to fathom it out, I’ll find I could go on forever. George Liddell

n SPOTLIGHT ON SALTFORD

Saltford Guides enjoyed their first camp for a number of years, with campfires, go-karting, fencing and much more

Guides enjoy most action-packed year yet News from Saltford District Guiding Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and their leaders have had more opportunity than ever in the past year to try new activities and learn new skills. In June girls from all units were invited to take part in the first Saltford District Camp for a number of years. With Guides sleeping under canvas and Brownies tucked up inside, girls enjoyed an action-packed weekend away at Briarlands in Upton Cheyney. On the menu of

www.iteam.co.uk 0117 944 4949

activities was fencing, archery, orienteering, slip and slide, a giant inflatable assault course, go-karting and grass sledging. Once the sun was setting girls enjoyed songs and treats around a large campfire. Rainbows, our youngest members, joined for

Unit 4 The Old Mill Mead Lane, Saltford, BS31 3ER

the day to get a taste of all the activities, too. All girls gained an exclusive badge and T-shirt, with Guides also earning their Camper badge. A special thank you goes to Saltford District Commissioner Catherine Banfield for arranging such funfilled weekend for all. Earlier in the year girls from Brownies and Guides were able to join forces to learn circus skills, thanks to Mindblowers Bristol. Girls had the opportunity to learn the unicycle, diablo, plate spinning, juggling and even had a go at making human pyramids! Girls who took part in this event earned their Circus Skills badge. In the winter we were met with the dreaded news that our faithful heating had failed us at the Saltford District Headquarters. Faced with the prospect of a long, cold winter of evening meetings, the girls and their leaders rallied around

to fundraise by taking part in a sponsored walk from Saltford to Bath, with the welcome reward of a play in Victoria Park at the end. Thanks to this fundraising event, a donation from Saltford Parish Council, and the excellent work of local company AC Martin, Saltford HQ was warm again within weeks and now boasts a new gas central heating system. The new school year sees the expansion of Guiding in Saltford, with the opening of a new Rainbow unit to meet the growing demand for girls aged five to seven. Girls from all units have another busy year ahead of them in 2017/18 with a Thanksgiving-themed weekend away booked for November, a science skills day thanks to E.ON energy in January and a World Thinking Day celebration event in February. In the summer, the Guides are looking forward to a great canal adventure, navigating their own canal boat along the Kennet and Avon, and Girlguiding’s annual festival-style camp, Wellies and Wristbands, in August. If you think you can keep up with the pace of Guiding in Saltford, or would like your daughter to get involved, please get in touch either via email at saltforddistrictguides@gmail. com or online at https://www. girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved

Patricia takes a step back at dance school It’s now 44 years since Patricia Veale took over the Keyford Dancing School back in 1973, in which time it has gone from strength to strength and the number of classes and dance styles has more than doubled. Over the years pupils have gone from tiny tots to confident young adults and then many have returned with their own children, or even come back to join the adult classes. As well as entering examinations and dance awards pupils have performed at the Bristol Hippodrome, Bath Theatre Royal, Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, and Disneyland Paris along with numerous local shows and displays. Next

year will again see performances at Broadlands Academy by the whole school. Patricia has now decided to hand over the teaching to the younger qualified staff, who are all DBS-checked with the appropriate first aid and child protection training. The administration will be run by her daughter Janine, who also owns the Avon Dance Academy and the Chew Valley Dancing School. Janine can be contacted on 01761 479026. Patricia will continue to be involved with events at the school and in Keynsham, such as the Winter Festival and Keynsham Music Festival, of which she is a director.

The Saltford Business Network was set up five years ago with the objectives of promoting and supporting Saltford businesses, encouraging local people and companies to use Saltford businesses and ensuring the views of Saltford businesses are represented when plans are made and decisions taken. We are a friendly and supportive group providing information to members through regular seminars, informal networking and via our website. The network includes a diverse range of companies from builders to retailers, consultants and businesses in healthcare to IT service providers, property services and antiques. Our programme of monthly events has included seminars on subjects as diverse as cyber security, business in Europe, selling to Bath and North East

Somerset Council, leadership, risk management and more. These presentations have been from outside speakers and also from our own membership. Social events intersperse these more formal occasions, visiting the hostelries of Saltford. We give members a valuable opportunity to meet informally and talk about their current business issues. We were pleased to support the Saltford Festival again in 2017 – we strongly believe that maintaining good relationships between local businesses and the community is healthy for both, and we were honoured to be given a Community Award earlier this year by Saltford Parish Council for our work supporting local businesses. New members will always be welcome, all you need to be is a business person residing, or actively engaged in business in Saltford. We’ll include your business in our online directory. Date is set for fundraising Santa Dash’s festive return Registration is now open for a popular festive fun run that is returning to Saltford for the fifth year to support a good cause. Saltford Santa Dash will be held on Sunday, December 3, and entry forms for the five-mile fun run and the mini Santa Dash for younger runners are now available online. The event attracts around 500 runners, who take to the streets between Saltford and Keynsham dressed in Santa costumes, while around 400 mini Santas take part in the shorter run at Saltford Sports Ground. Richard Evans, chair of the event’s organising group, said: “In addition to the fun associated with the Santa Dash I am pleased that we have been able raise funds for local charities. “Last year we raised over

Saltford Santa Dash attracts around 500 runners £10,000 for the ButterfliesHaven charity, which supports youngsters and families living with autism. “This year we have chosen another local and extremely worthy charity, Jessie May. This charity provides specialist nursing care for terminally ill

children in their own homes. So I do hope that people will come out and support us just as they have for the last four years.” For more information on the Santa Dash, and to register, visit www.saltfordsantadash.webs. com

Final push to save paths for next year A final push has been launched to raise enough funds by the end of October to keep a network of paths around Saltford open to the public for another year. Walkers, runners and horse riders are being urged to help raise the last few hundred pounds towards the £3,000 needed to protect the 4.5km of well used permissive paths. The routes cross farmland and, after the Government withdrew subsidies for public access in 2013, Saltford Community Association and farmer Adam Stratton reached an agreement that would allow the paths to remain in use. An SCA spokesperson said: “Without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs, the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops.” For more information and to donate, visit www.saltfordhall. co.uk/Permissive_paths.html

Morris and his team reveal sharp new look for barber shop weeks after fire A Saltford barber is celebrating being back in business in his own premises after a fire gutted the building at the start of August. Morris Mercato reopened the doors of Morris’ Barber Shop in Bath Road on September 26 after several weeks of refurbishment, during which he ran his business from a temporary building on the forecourt at neighbouring BOS Leisure. The shop has been given a new look by Saltford firm Mobius Works, with brighter colours, bigger mirrors and more space inside, and customers have praised the changes, says Morris. He said: “It has been a stressful time but I’m really happy with the way the shop looks and glad to be back inside. I want to say thank you to Martin

Morris Mercato, centre, with son Nico and Alex Gaulton from BOS Leisure for allowing us to use the car park for the Portakabin – without that we would have been in trouble – and

to Mobius Works for helping me out from the beginning. “My customers deserve a massive thank you for the

brilliant support they have given me – as do my staff for putting up with me over the past few weeks!” Morris opened the barber’s in the village 12 years ago and has now been joined by son Nico, who is doing his apprenticeship working at the shop alongside his dad and fellow staff member Alex Gaulton.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Kevin Durrant, minister of Keynsham Baptist Church

T

he orchestra in which I play violin gave its very first concert recently. We’ve only been going nine months and it would be fair to say that there’s more enthusiasm than quality. Our audience was the Mencap group which meets every Thursday evening in St Dunstan’s Church Hall, Keynsham. Their response to our playing couldn’t have been more encouraging. As soon as we played a waltz or a jig, they were on their feet dancing; and when we got to the Can Can there was no holding them back! All ages and all abilities were on the floor giving it all they had! The following week, I conducted a funeral service for a lady in her 80s who, even in her

later years, loved to dance. At her family’s request, her coffin left the church to the tune of her favourite TV programme – Strictly Come Dancing. What this lady had in common with the members of the Mencap group was a determination to get the most out of life, regardless of age or limitations. This is what we see in the life of Jesus. He spent so much time eating and partying that his critics called him a glutton and a drunkard. When a wedding he was attending ran out of wine, he conjured up an extra 150 gallons to make sure everyone had a good time. Maybe it was this passion for life which lay behind his teaching that we must to become like children to enter the Kingdom of God. Children

are so much better at appreciating the wonder and excitement of their surroundings. As adults, we are (rightly) more aware of the problems that exist in the world, but this knowledge can often overwhelm us, draining away our joy. While it’s true that Jesus wants us to care for the needy and to fight for justice; he also wants us to enjoy the life we were created for. The civil rights campaigner Howard Thurman put it well when he advised one of his students: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” In other words: dust off those dancing shoes – or whatever else brings you joy!

Care home’s fete a resounding success Residents at a Saltford care home opened the doors to friends, relatives and the rest of the community for a summer fete. Kingfisher Lodge Care Centre hosted activities throughout the day on September 9, including entertainment from Andy Tee, tombola and games. Staff also provided plenty of refreshments, including hot dogs, burgers and homemade cakes. Resident Pat Marsh said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surrounded by lots of great people, and the refreshments kept flowing. The weather kept us inside but the staff did a great job, not just on the day, but organising the event and getting everyone together. It was also fun to see the staff dressed up as farmers.” Lesley Cole, general manager at the home, said: “Staff at Kingfisher Lodge are dedicated to making sure that the home is a hub of the local community, and this event, along with all their hard work, has definitely paid off. It was a resounding success.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

August Heat (an Inspector Montalbano Mystery) by Andrea Camilleri I have returned to Andrea Camilleri’s stories following the recent adaptions of the Inspector Montalbano Mysteries on BBC Four. Set in the gorgeous surroundings of Sicily, these stories follow our main detective, Inspector Montalbano, and his team of Mimi, Fazio and the ever-excitable Catarella. In this book, it is the lazy month of August and Inspector Montalbano and his girlfriend, Livia, are preparing for their holiday. They have found a villa and the inspector assures Livia that it is far too hot for anything exciting to happen. But then a young boy goes missing and the apparent calm soon goes. Soon the inspector has to deal with a grisly find in an old trunk, the suspicious death of a labourer and the lure of a beautiful woman. This is the 11th book of the Inspector Montalbano stories and as usual it is an exciting mix of a snappy crime plot, interesting characters, stunning countryside and, of course, a great detective in Salvo Montalbano. Shtum by Jem Lester, reviewed by Emilie Bioud, library assistant at Keynsham Library Jem Lester wanted to write a book but he never expected to write one about his autistic son. Based on his own experience, this fiction

presents three generations of men in one family: the grandfather, the father and the son. Writing about such a subject presents a challenge, as it places at its heart a main character who can’t speak for himself. Everyone thinks they know the autism spectrum based on movies such as Rain Man but what about the autistic child who can’t speak, who can’t listen, who harms himself and is violent with his relatives? The parenting lesson here is strong and gives you a powerful message of what is love, caring and fighting for the rights of your child when he or she can’t fight for themselves. I found myself shocked and impressed by this book, and never left it until I finished it.

Adult Non-Fiction

Nadiya’s Kitchen by Nadiya Hussain As autumn begins, why not treat yourself to some of Nadiya’s fantastic recipes. Nadiya Hussain, winner of the Great British Bake Off and a successful presenter of her own cookery show, has written a gorgeous cookery book of over 100 family recipes.

This is Nadiya’s first book and it is essentially a book for families, with quick and tasty meals. These range from feta and dill muffins or breakfast croissants for those lazy mornings, to a lemon thyme Irish stew, cheeky salted pretzel fudge, a warming sage and squash soup and, my particular favourite, banana and cinnamon cake. This book is presented very well, with clear instructions and mouth-watering pictures. A real treat!

DVD

Get Out (Cert 15) Written by Jordan Peele, this film’s story centres on a weekend visiting a new girlfriend’s parents that turns into a horrific nightmare. Chris, a young African American, visits his white girlfriend’s family home. He is anxious but this soon turns into outright terror when he discovers that the family’s seemingly idyllic life is hiding a sinister conspiracy, one that involves the disappearance of several black people in the area. A comedic horror movie with a little hint of a more subtle message.

Children’s Fiction

Witch Watch by Sibeal Pounder Welcome to the world of Sinkville, the witchy Ritzy City and our heroine Tiga Whicabim. Tiga is over the moon about learning the name of her missing mother and now she

must search for her in Silver City. However, things soon start to become strange – weird colours come back into the black and white world of Sinkville, including a horrible orange dress her old guardian Miss Hecks starts to wear. Can Tiga found out what is going on or will evil Celia Crayfish stand in her way? A delightful series on the life of a community of witches who get up to some witchy adventures.

ADVERTORIAL

Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common is seeking a chair of governors. The popular local secondary school is part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust and has its own local governing body. The academy saw greatly improved exam results this summer and its new principal Dean Anderson, pictured, has a proven track record. This puts SBL in a strong position to move forward with the support of the trust, governors, staff and families. Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of Wellsway MAT, said the role of chair would be hugely rewarding. “It is a chance to have a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of young people in our area,” she said. “We are a local trust, committed to working together for the benefit of everyone in our care. “Each school has unique characteristics and it is the job of the chairs to uphold those,

while also collaborating with the trust and the schools within it to ensure that we provide the very best education for all the young people and families we serve.” Malcolm Broad, chair of another governing body in the trust, added: “The trust takes care of finance, buildings and HR, which leaves the governors free to focus on education. We look at attendance, achievement and attainment and provide support and robust challenge to the head teacher. “Being a governor brings opportunities for personal and professional development, especially as chair, which is an important leadership role. It is very satisfying to help a school grow, and being part of a growing academy trust is exciting. Of course, training and coaching is provided for all aspects of the job.” To find out more about the school, visit www.slblearning. org.uk

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field

The 2017/18 season has seen a topsy turvy start for Keynsham Town’s four senior sides, with most games being played away from Crown Fields due to refurbishment of the clubhouse and changing rooms.

The First XI, under the new stewardship of John Allen, Russell Holt and Mark Read, began with a tough FA Cup Extra Preliminary tie at Western Premier League side Bridgwater Town. After leading 1-0 at the break with a superb free kick from debutant Matt Long and Matt Brown regaining the lead on the hour after the home side equalised, the Ks fell apart to lose 5-2. A visit to Bishops Lydeard a week later saw the league campaign off to a fine start, as goals from Long and Brown again, plus Sam Duggan and Craig Wilson, saw the Ks run out easy 4-0 winners. This was followed with a hard-fought 4-2 win at Portishead on a Tuesday night, with Kyle Box, Wilson and a brace from Brown accounting for the Ks’ goals. After a Brown penalty was all Keynsham had to show for a dominant first half at Bishop Sutton, their defensive frailties returned in the second half as they slipped to a 3-1 reverse. However, another Tuesday on the road saw a comfortable 3-0 win at Almondsbury, with Brown notching twice in the opening 10 minutes and Long scoring his third of the season just before halftime. August Bank Holiday Saturday saw a Les Phillips League Cup tie at Premier League outfit Bridport. The Ks again got off to a fantastic start, with goals from Stefan Lee and Tauren Williams inside 10 minutes; but the hosts were level within three minutes, and went on to score three more after the break for a

Top goal-scorer Matt Brown, right, was August’s Player of the Month convincing 5-2 win. However, the month ended on a positive note on a gloomy Tuesday evening at Cheddar, where goals from Scott Saunders, Kyle Box and Cameron Shorney led the Ks to a great 3-0 victory. September began with another long trip, this time to Devon, where South West Peninsula League side Bovey Tracey were the hosts for an FA Vase Preliminary Round tie. Unfortunately the Ks’ poor cup form continued, and there was little to write home about as Bovey ran out comfortable 3-1 winners. Saunders scored the Ks’ only goal. A chilly Tuesday night at Chippenham Park then saw possibly the Ks’ most impressive performance of the season. Despite gifting the home side two goals with defensive errors, Matt Brown took his tally for the season to 10 with a fine hat trick and further goals from Box, Wilson and Shorney saw Keynsham run out handsome 6-2 winners. After what seemed an eternity (147 days to be precise), they

returned to Crown Fields for the first home game of the season on September 23. However, a below-par effort saw Wilson score a late consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat. The road trip hangover was still there three days later, when Roman Glass St George were the visitors, and took all three points with a convincing 4-1 win. A 20-yard strike by Saunders was all the Ks had to show for their efforts. On a positive note, a total of 222 spectators watched these two games, which bodes well for the season ahead. Not surprisingly, Matt Brown won the August Player of the Month award (sponsored by The Old Bank). Manager John Allen

said: “It is with great pleasure I announce Matt as our August Player of the Month. Playing all our games away from home was always going to be a hard start, not only for us as a team but as individual players as well, especially in Matt’s position as our reliable no 9. “With an already impressive reputation as a goal-scorer, his card is firmly marked by the opposition’s defenders, but in the six games we played in August, Matt managed to score seven goals. This firmly placed him as the division’s top scorer and, added to that, he never misses a training session, where he trains as he plays, showing a brilliant work ethic! “Working out his stats makes pretty impressive reading. Including last season’s achievements and the hat trick he scored away at Chippenham Park, it’s actually now 39 goals in 57 games for the club (including September). “As if his goals aren’t impressive enough for me, his willingness to work hard from the front, never giving the opposition a moment’s peace, and always putting the team first, sets him apart from the other strikers in the league.” The Ks’ Reserves have made a good start in the Somerset County League Division One, with four wins and two defeats. Liam Crispin has stood out in particular, with seven goals to his name. The A Team have also started well in the Bristol and Suburban League Division Two, with three wins and a solitary defeat. Meanwhile the Under 18s recovered from a 2-0 defeat against Tavistock in the FA Youth Cup to win their first Somerset Floodlit Youth League game 2-1 at Longwell Green Sports. Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

Finals day and a special 50th for bowlers September was a very eventful month for the members of Keynsham Bowling Club both on and off the green, writes our correspondent. The first Sunday was Finals Day with 15 trophies to be won, which were contested by 44 players, with a selection of singles, pairs and triples for ladies, men and mixed teams. The important cups of the season were for the ladies’ and gents’ championships and they were won by Marlene Tidy and Roger Price. The one disappointing feature of the day was the weather as players had to continually don their wet gear. This impacted on the number of members turning up to watch. The various leagues concluded during the month with all of our teams remaining where they are for next season – no promotion or relegation. The one success was in the Men’s Friday

Triples League with our team finishing in top spot. The weather was completely different on a Saturday at the end of the month when about 80 members gathered in the clubhouse for a buffet lunch to celebrate 50 years of membership for our beloved president John Mead. One of our longest-serving members, David Bendall, reminded us, among other things, of the debt of gratitude that we owe John in his role as greens manager, which has resulted in our green being one of the best in the county. Our vice president Margaret Church presented a bouquet to John’s wife Sheila, while our poet laureate Ian Tweedie presented John with a framed copy of a poem he had written for the occasion. Finally the club captain Beresford Parker presented John with the gift of a clock on behalf

Gents’ champion Roger Price and ladies’ champion Marlene Tidy of the members. A lovely day, enhanced by John’s generosity in funding the bar, in honour of

a lovely gentleman and a great servant of Keynsham Bowling Club.

Flawless start to the season comes at a Keynsham Town Ladies can boast a 100 per cent success record from their first five League fixtures in August and September, writes our correspondent. In this time Kerry Bartlett has continued her goal-scoring form from pre-season, notching up a remarkable 11, although not enough to lead the division’s goal chart, for a Plymouth Argyle player has already recorded an incredible 17. Their one reverse came in the League Cup away to Enfield Town. They lost 3-2 in a match they really ought to have won, for they led 2-1 before conceding from a defensive mix-up, and then lost in added time to a penalty, awarded for a very harsh handball. The recent results have come at a cost, however, as the squad have suffered a number of injuries, and at Maidenhead on the last Sunday in September

– their third fixture in eight days – they travelled with just 11 players, one of whom was turning out despite illness. Of

the injuries, one wasn’t footballrelated but actually down to a serious dog bite! An occupational hazard from her job as a dog
