First boss faces ‘isolating parts

The boss of First West of England has been told his firm should have more “social conscience” when deciding whether to axe bus services relied upon by local people. James Freeman, managing director of the bus operator, attended a public meeting in Keynsham on August 16 to discuss a host of changes affecting bus services in the town, which are due to be introduced on September 4. Dozens of residents joined local councillors to tell Mr Freeman how the reduction of services to the Park Estate and Chandag Estate would affect their day-to-day lives. While some bus users said they were concerned about longer walks home in the dark from the High Street or would have to return to using their cars, others said they were facing isolation with the loss of their only link to work, hospitals and their social network. Under the changes, the 178, which runs from Bath to Bristol, will no longer travel through the Chandag Estate while the 38, which serves the Park Estate to the south of the town, will be cut from half-hourly to one an hour in the daytime from Monday to Saturday, while evening, Sunday and bank holiday buses will be withdrawn entirely. Online petitions calling for a halt to the plans for both services have gathered more than 1,100 signatures collectively, while other petitions have also been placed in spots around the town. Mr Freeman explained that changes were necessary to both services to improve reliability

over what are very long routes Mr Freeman told the meeting that commercial services were paid for by fares and, like all operators, First had to balance the cost of running them with revenues. Councils could step in to fund services, he added, as could any other registered operators in the area. He said: “The local authority has the overall view of the transport network and is empowered to provide additional services above what commercial operators can do.” Bath and North East Somerset Council has stepped in to fund two evening journeys from St John’s Church to the Park Estate at 8.05pm and 9.05pm, run by Bath Bus Company, but Richard Smith, senior transport officer at the council, told the meeting extra pressure on budgets meant the authority was “limited” in what it could do to provide supported bus services. Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale told Mr Freeman: “I appreciate decisions are based on commercial matters but I still believe First ought to have a social conscience – you are isolating significant parts of the community.” In response, Mr Freeman said it seemed the local authority was not prepared to use powers available to support the local network, adding: “We can’t just run buses because we like doing it – where is the council’s social conscience on this?” Following the discussion, town councillors voted to set up a working party to gather input from the community to

Council consults on extending bus service Residents are being asked for their views on the future of Keynsham and Saltford’s 665 bus service – which could step in to provide a new service for the Chandag Estate, council officers suggest in a report. B&NES Council is considering introducing changes to several supported bus services from May 2017 as it is facing a funding shortfall. The 665 service could, a report by public transport officers suggests, be extended to meet growing demand as Keynsham expands. The 665 currently operates Monday to Saturday during off-peak periods in areas away from main bus routes, offering a hail-and-ride service in Keynsham and Saltford, and is used by more than 18,000 passengers a year. In 2016/2017 it will cost £39,755 to run, with passenger fares providing £16,859. The cost per passenger journey to the council is calculated to be £2.13. Council officers say a

revised service, however, could: have extended hours, operating in morning and afternoon peaks; improve services through the Chandag Estate by providing more regular links into Keynsham, replacing links lost in the rerouting of the 178; remove duplication of services 38 and 349 in the Park Estate; link new development areas to the town centre, railway station, and schools; and retain links to Saltford and Gaston Avenue in line with demand. The extended service would cost more, the report says, but s106 contributions from developers could be sought to support it. Residents are being asked for their feedback on the service’s future, before the consultation ends on Friday, September 16. People can respond online at www. bathnes.gov.uk/consultations/ changes-supported-busservices-may-20117 or by emailing public_transport@ bathnes.gov.uk or visiting a council One Stop Shop.

Police patrols target ‘nuisance’ behaviour

Police are carrying out targeted patrols to tackle anti-social behaviour, including underage drinking and graffiti, in parts of Keynsham. The action follows a number reports last month of young people causing a nuisance in areas including the High Street, St Clement’s Road, the Memorial Park and the area around Kelston Field. Neighbourhood officers have also offered guidance on reporting anti-social behaviour. Issues dealt with by the police include damage to property and graffiti; rowdy drunken behaviour; setting fires; inconsiderate use of vehicles. These can be reported by filling in a “Report a crime or incident” form, calling 101 or in person at a police station. Issues that should be reported to B&NES Council include: noise such as loud music or barking dogs; littering including drug-related litter; and vehicles abandoned on the road. Breaches Gate group set Residents opposed to a new housing development on the edge of Keynsham will tell a planning inspector the proposal represents “too much traffic, too many houses and too many assumptions”. Representatives of the Friends of Breaches Gate group will be speaking at a hearing being held this month to examine Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Placemaking Plan, which sets out plans for future development across the district. The group says it will argue that the development – which could eventually contain up to 500 homes – will add to local pollution and congestion, going against council commitments to improve air quality. The Breaches Gate group was set up in 2014 when residents first learned of propsals by B&NES to remove land to the east of Keynsham – bordered by Teviot Road, Manor Road Community Woodland and the A4 – from the green belt. The move – part of the area’s Core Strategy – was approved,

however, after the strategy was given the go-ahead by a government inspector. Developer Mactaggart and Mickel revealed its plans for 500 homes on the site in January 2016, submitting an outline planning application for the first phase of 250 homes and a primary school soon after. This month planning inspector Claire Sherratt is hearing views from a number

of residents and groups from across B&NES on a wide range of topics and sites before deciding whether the Placemaking Plan is legally compliant and meets national policy and will make recommendations to the council. Bob Elcome-Thorpe, one of the founders of the Friends of Breaches Gate, said the aim of speaking at the hearing was to ensure the inspector had a clear view of how residents living near

to raise pollution fears

the earmarked site on the edge of Keynsham felt. “As such our main message will be that this is an inappropriate development, from both a location and size point of view it is too much,” he said. “The modified plan from Mactaggart and Mickel, while admirable in attempts to offer something that is acceptable, still does not address key questions. What will happen to the extra traffic? This is a major concern now, so when we have another 500 vehicle movements during each period of peak traffic, basing figures on another planning application in Keynsham, how will the local infrastructure cope? “The whole plan seems to be in contradiction to both the B&NES’ Core Strategy and the South West Spatial Plan. These two documents both hold a commitment to reduce pollution and promote developments that do not add to either pollution or congestion. This plan will do both.” The residents’ group is also

pointing to the fact that the development, which will be accessed via junctions onto the well-used A4 Bath Road, is close to Saltford’s Air Quality Management Area, a stretch of the A4 where excessive nitrogen dioxide levels have been recorded, leading B&NES to draw up an Air Quality Action Plan this year to reduce air pollutants. Mr Elcome-Thorpe added: “The effect on Saltford of 900plus extra vehicle movements a day, controlled by two traffic light junctions, will be significant. All this with the encouragement of B&NES not to use a car to travel but to get out in the pollution and walk and cycle! Buses are not a reliable option as the main bus transport provider is cancelling bus routes in Keynsham, thus making sure that people use their cars.” Following a public exhibition by Mactaggart and Mickel which invited views on its masterplan for the site in January, a spokesperson for the firm told Keynshamvoice: “The land at

East Keynsham was formally identified as part of a mixed use allocation in B&NES Core Strategy… One of the main concerns at the consultation was the possibility of additional traffic on the A4 Bath Road. B&NES has completed an extensive modelling on the site before confirming its formal allocation.” A decision by B&NES planning chiefs on whether to give the go-ahead to Mactaggart and Mickel’s proposals – which have attracted 300 letters of objection – is yet to be made. The Breaches Gate group says, while residents still hoped the proposals could be withdrawn, any development on the site should be smaller with a school, health centre and facilities for older people. The council has previously said that it had ensured the opportunity for communities to be involved in the detailed planning of the site by requiring the developer to draw up a masterplan with public consultation.

Quick action thwarts thieves at allotments Thieves who targeted sheds at Keynsham Allotments last month were thwarted after police were quickly alerted to a break-in. Officers and plot-holders arrived at the site at the end of Park Road soon after receiving reports of intruders at 1.15am on Saturday, August 6. The would-be thieves escaped across nearby fields but they were forced to dump all of the tools and equipment they had removed from buildings at the site. All of the items were recovered and returned to owners or taken away for forensic examination by the police. The allotment association is making improvements to security at the site and has urged residents in the Park Road area to make sure their sheds and gardens are secured at night.

Do cats get ticks as well as dogs? The answer is yes. They are more commonly seen in dogs, as dogs tend to walk in grassy areas, but cats get them too, particularly if they live near woodland or fields. September/October is peak tick season and this year has seen an increase in these nasty little critters. Ticks can carry infectious diseases, including Lyme disease, which is thought to be on the increase. Ticks wait in the grass for warm-blooded mammals to brush past, then attach themselves and feed off the blood. The longer the tick is attached, the greater the risk of infection, so check your pet's skin every day. If you find one, don’t pull it off, they should be twisted off with a tick remover tool so that the mouth part is also removed. If the mouth part is left, it can pass on

disease or fester and become infected. Ideally, call us for an appointment to see a nurse, who will remove it for you free of charge. The recent humid weather is a perfect breeding ground for ticks and we recommend using tick protection. Your vet will be able to prescribe an effective treatment for both dogs and cats. In fact there is now a brand new “spot-on” treatment for cats, which protects against fleas and ticks for up to three months. For more information, or to book an appointment, don’t hesitate to call us. l Don’t forget to come to our Fun Dog Show at Keynsham Park on Saturday, September 24, 2pm. Drivers urged to stick to 20mph as thousands recorded breaking limit Thousands of drivers have been recorded breaking the speed limit on a residential road in Keynsham in just one month – with some travelling at three times the limit. Motorists using Park Road are being urged to stick to 20mph after the results of a month of monitoring in July sparked serious safety concerns. The checks recorded an astonishing 39,485 vehicle movements along the road, 25,607 of which were going faster than 20mph. Among them, four vehicles were recorded going at speeds of between 56mph and 61mph while one was going even faster than that in a section where parked cars reduce it to a single lane as it approaches a blind bend, said Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale. Mr Hale organised the checks following concerns raised by residents about the volume of traffic using the road and the

When the outcome of the check was revealed I was astonished. “I would urge those who use the road to consider the safety of themselves and others and keep to the speed limit of 20mph, which I know is a challenging speed to keep down to but if two cars meet at the 85th percentile

to ease traffic on Park Road would be considered as part of the development of Keynsham’s transport strategy. Meanwhile, Mr Hale is urging traffic calming measures to be urgently considered and has asked police to step up speed enforcement in the area. He said: “We now have to make this work both for the original community and the newcomers, who also need a safe environment when travelling about along Park Road. “It is appalling for everyone that with a third of The Meadows still to be completed there is already in excess of 39,000 vehicle movements per month on this residential road and indeed up into The Meadows. “Both Lisa and I will continue to fight hard to resolve this problem but need the help of those who use the road – we would implore them to drive within the 20mph limit for everyone’s safety.”

Peace restored after overnight piling work Puzzled Keynsham residents took to the internet to find the source of a mystery noise waking people across Keynsham in the middle of the night. Likened to a sledgehammer on paving stones, a number of residents reported being woken in the early hours over two nights in August on the Streetlife website. Speculation that it was coming from the railway station was proved right, however, when Keynsham councillor Charles Gerrish posted a letter from Network Rail on the site following complaints to the company. People living within 250 metres of the line had been

warned that piling work would be taking place around August 24 and 25, the firm explained, but the noise had travelled much further when workers moved into an open space. “Unfortunately due to open space and topography, the noise from this has affected more residents outside of this area,” the letter said. It added that only a couple more shifts would require the piling hammer and work would be moving back into a more sheltered location. The work is part of a major upgrade to the railway line, which will be electrified between London Paddington and the West Country.

Ashley Jenkins, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, is swimming a mile for charity

Swimming opens up a ‘whole new world’ for Ashley A Keynsham man who less than two years ago couldn’t swim more than a few metres is now undertaking a mile-long challenge for two charities close to his heart. Ashley Jenkins, 26, has quadriplegic cerebral palsy which affects all four of his limbs, meaning he is wheelchair-bound. He first took the plunge at Freeways Hydrotherapy Pool and says he barely managed to swim a length of the eight-metre pool independently. Just 22 months on, however, Ashley is now just days away from a fundraising challenge that will see him swim the equivalent of a mile at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre. Beside the physical difficulties he had to overcome, Ashley said there was one mental barrier he had to tackle too: “Getting over the fear of drowning! The key was getting used to being underwater and controlling your breath. “Once I did that it opened a whole new world! Swimming has really helped my movement, confidence and is a great form of cardiovascular exercise.” Ashley will be carrying out his sponsored swim on September 5 and hopes to complete it in under

five hours. He said: “Hengrove have been outstanding in ensuring that disabled people can access their public pool and have given me use of a lane for the day.” Two charities will benefit from the money Ashley raises, which already stands at £1,155 on his online fundraising page. The final total will be split between Freeways Hydrotherapy Pool, where Ashley started his journey and which offers physiotherapy to people with complex disabilities and conditions, and Cerebral Palsy Plus, which Ashley says works hard to raise awareness, put on events and campaign. Ashley adds that both charities have made a real difference to his life, reminding him “disability is only a state of mind”. He added: “Have a strong mindset and determination no matter what’s in the way. Twentytwo months ago I couldn't swim eight metres, now it’s only a week until I swim 1,600 and I can't wait.” To sponsor Ashley, visit his fundraising page at http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ ashleyjenkins

Meetings mark the next step for neighbourhood development plan It’s full steam ahead for the next stage of drawing up a neighbourhood development plan for Keynsham, and residents and businesses are urged to get on board. A series of meetings will be held in September to look in detail at the town’s strengths, weaknesses and issues it may face in the future. The events are part of a major project by the community to draw up a vision for how Keynsham should develop over the next 20 years. The final document, once approved by a planning inspector and a public referendum, will then inform planning decisions. A draft vision drawn up since the project’s launch in February, sets out aims that include retaining the town’s independence as it grows, encouraging business and the creative sector, protecting its conservation area and enhancing its heritage. The next step is a series of

introductory topic group meetings, which will look in detail at a number of key areas for the plan: Road, Transport, Parking and Infrastructure; Heritage, Culture, Tourism, Marketing and Development for the Built Environment; Recreation, Leisure, Sport, Health and Community Education; Sustainability, Environmental and Ecological. During autumn, the groups will focus on Keynsham’s strengths, weaknesses, aims and possible threats to draw up surveys to get feedback from the community. Meanwhile, business owners, employers and retailers are all welcome to join the Business, Employment and Economic Growth topic group at a business breakfast. The dates and venues for each of the meetings are in the panel on the right. To get involved in any of the meetings, email ndp@ keysham-tc.gov.uk or phone 0117 986 8683.

B&NES backs £1bn deal, but will ‘metro mayor’ go ahead?

People living in Bath and North East Somerset have backed the idea of a £1 billion devolution deal for the West of England, which could see a new mayor elected for the region. A report has now gone to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who will decide if the deal goes ahead. Even as the report was being delivered, however, doubts were being raised over new Prime Minister Theresa May’s enthusiasm for the “metro mayor” plan, which has proved a sticking point with many in the West. A public consultation was held across B&NES, Bristol and South Gloucestershire, ending on August 15, and the results showed 55 per cent of those who responded across the three areas thought that “on balance” a West of England mayoral authority would benefit the region. Figures reveal that just

over 2,000 people across the three council areas took part, including 471 B&NES residents – representing less than one per cent of the population. Cllr Tim Warren, leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “We’re grateful to everyone who took part in the public consultation and attended the public events. I am pleased that overall the public supported the deal. The next step will be for the Secretary of State to consider the results and based on the comments received to determine if the deal goes ahead. Finally each council will be asked to endorse his decision in October. It is at that time all three authorities independently will come to a balanced view about what will be best for their areas.” Under current plans, the deal would see central government hand over certain powers to a new West of England mayoral combined authority, which would include the leaders of the

three councils and a new West of England mayor, with elections to take place next year. The “metro mayor” post has proved contentious, with North Somerset Council pulling out of the deal over the issue and concerns raised in B&NES that it went against public feeling after residents voted in a referendum not to replace the role of council leader with an elected mayor. Following reports of Mrs May’s stance on metro mayors, which went as far as suggesting she could even axe them, local party leaders have made their positions on the issue clear in two open letters, which are printed below. More about the devolution deal is available at www. westofenglanddevolution.co.uk. Councillor Robin Moss on behalf of the B&NES Labour Group to Councillor Tim Warren, leader of B&NES Council (Conservative)

As I’m sure you are aware, it has been reported that the Prime Minister is reconsidering the idea of forcing metro mayors on combined authorities as part of future devolution deals. The details on this are still hazy, however we understand that this change of heart has occurred because Theresa May is wary of the political opportunity mayoral elections would present to the Labour party. And she should quite rightly be worried about that, given that Labour would look extremely likely to win seats such as the West of England, should an election arise. But regardless of the political opportunity this would present to my own party, it is crucial that the public’s view on this is at the forefront of our decision making. We know from the recent district mayoral elections in B&NES that the public

overwhelmingly rejected a mayoral system locally. Following this, you will recall that Labour urged the council to hold an indicative referendum (at no extra cost to the taxpayer) to ask the public if they supported the idea for a metro mayor for the West of England. However, your Conservative administration voted this down, disallowing our proposal to be debated. As we have stated from the start, Labour supports the idea of devolved money and powers from the Government to local decision makers. We believe that we should have more control over what happens and where money is spent in the local area. But we still have concerns about the metro mayor element, and the costly elections that this would involve. You are presented with a new window of opportunity to support our call to scrap the idea

of the metro mayor now that your own Conservative Prime Minister has expressed concerns about this element of the deal. We hope you will take this golden opportunity to put pressure on your Government to re-think the deal, so that the West of England can secure a decent devolution package, minus the contentious metro mayor idea. Councillor Robin Moss on behalf of the B&NES Labour Group Councillor Tim Warren’s reply Thank you for your letter regarding the devolution proposals for the West of England. I am pleased to see that we remain largely in agreement over this issue. Like you, I have always been supportive of the concept of devolving additional powers, functions and funding from Westminster to our local area. I am sure you therefore

welcome the fact that, following many months of negotiations between the council and Government, we in the West of England have managed to secure by some way the biggest deal in the country in terms of funding per head of population. However, as I have always stated, it would not be my preference to have an elected mayor as part of the deal. I would much prefer to see a continuation of the existing arrangements whereby a chair is chosen from the representatives of the constituent councils. To date, despite the media speculation to which you refer, the Government has been clear that having an elected regional mayor working alongside the constituent councils to oversee the devolved powers is a prerequisite of any meaningful devolution agreement. Nonetheless, I continue to make

11

representations to the new Government in this regard, and if the Government were to agree to remove the requirement to have a mayor as part of the deal I am sure that would be widely welcomed here in B&NES. However, it is also important that the debate over the mayoral aspect of the proposal does not overshadow the wider advantages the devolution deal would bring in terms of infrastructure investment, transport improvements and job creation. The results of the consultation which has been undertaken over recent weeks will now be sent to the Secretary of State for his consideration, with the conclusion due to be announced in the autumn. However, it is of course free for any councillor, or indeed resident, to continue to make representations to the Secretary of State over any aspect of the deal. I am pleased that we continue to enjoy cross-party support on this matter. Tim Warren Cllr for Mendip Ward Leader of B&NES Council

Year 11s hit the target once again Students at Broadlands Academy have produced another set of GCSE results to celebrate, with more Year 11s than ever achieving their target grades. For the fourth consecutive year more than 60 per cent of pupils achieved the benchmark of five A*-C grades, including English and maths. Achievement was particularly strong in biology, chemistry and physics with 100 per cent of students gaining A*-C grades, while more than 75 per cent of those studying English, film, graphics, history, PE, music, core science and additional science got A*-Cs. Among the school’s top performers were: Jordan Lear (12 A*-As); Jasmine Rhymes (11 A*-As); Livvie Atkins (nine A*As); Mia Conybeare, Josh House, Maisie Sparks and Ahmed Tumia (seven A*-As); Ellie Homer (six A*-As); Charlotte Cherry, Dan Goodwin, Emily Ricketts, Charlie Saunders and Ethan Thatcher (five A*-As). The subjects that saw the most A*-A grades were biology, chemistry, physics, history and film, with 25 per cent of students earning a top grade. Principal Dean Anderson, who has led Broadlands Academy for the last four years, said: “I am absolutely delighted for the students and staff at Broadlands who have worked so hard to ensure that these fantastic results could be achieved. It has been a privilege to be a part of the success at Broadlands since we became an academy and I am confident in the position the school now sits at following its

Students from Broadlands Academy had plenty to celebrate on GCSE results day in August ‘Good’ Ofsted inspection earlier this year.” Mr Anderson is moving to a new post as director for education for the REAch4 Academy Trust, and James Hall will become Broadlands’ new principal in January 2017, moving from Hayesfield Girls’ School. Mr Hall said: “Congratulations to all at Broadlands on another fantastic set of results. I am really looking forward to taking up my new post and working with all at Broadlands Academy in January to build upon the rapid progress and significant success achieved over the last four years.”

Year 11 students congratulated for their record-breaking results It was a record-breaking results day at Wellsway School as 90 per cent of Year 11s achieved a grade C or above in both their English and maths GCSEs. It means the school can celebrate a fifth consecutive year in which students’ GCSE results have shown an improvement. Principal Matthew Woodville said: “It is always an absolute pleasure to share the enjoyment and celebrations of students and their families opening their results. These amazing results are thanks to the tireless work of our staff, the commitment of the students and the support they receive from their families. “This strong partnership allows for our students to move on to their chosen path; they have shown what they can achieve with hard work and the rewards it brings. We are delighted to be seeing so many

Tom Davies, Rebecca Rogers and Luke Hardwick are all celebrating good results at Wellsway School return to us for study in our Sixth Form Centre.” Wellsway’s highest performing Year 11 students include: Jack Thomas (9A*, 2A); Nathan Tozer (9A*, 1A, 1B); Beth Gledhill (7A*, 4A); Thomas Davis (7A*, 3A, 1B); Georgina Jenkins (7A*, 3A, 1B); and Alice

Woodbridge (7A*, 3A, 1B). Tom Davies was also celebrating his achievements, gaining six A*s, three As, and a B as well as a double A* in the new further maths exam despite the fact he had to miss some of his final year to undergo surgery at Southmead Hospital to correct

curvature of the spine. “It wasn’t good. I was pretty stressed out around then, but I got back to school and am pleased with my results – they were better than I expected.” said Tom, who is planning to study maths, further maths, physics and chemistry at Wellsway Sixth Form before applying to university to study physics. Mr Woodville added: “With results advancing each year for the past five years, continuous improvement is at the heart of our school’s effort to provide the best education for the young people in our care; and so this will continue to be our focus in 2016-17 and beyond.” Enrolment at Wellsway School Sixth Form continues at the start of the academic year for both current Wellsway students and students from other schools. Youth and education Second GCSE year does academy proud

Some 65 per cent of students at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy secured five A*-C grades, including English and maths, in their GCSEs this year. Among those celebrating outstanding grades were: Kurt Cameron (7As and 3Bs); Bradley Chapman (3A*s, 8As); Samana Hassan (2A*s, 6As, 1B); Rupa Mondi (2A*s, 5As); Njabulo Nyakaza (8As); and Matthew Smith (3A*s, 5As, 2Bs). Rhian Priest, principal at the academy in Stoke Gifford, said: “Our GCSE results this year are well above the national average in what is only our second set of results. We are working hard to establish Bristol’s University Technical College as a centre of excellence and are particularly proud that more than 80 per cent of our students scored a C or above in engineering.” BTEA is a Centre of Excellence for teaching STEM

subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths – and works with employers and UWE to offer students from across the Bristol region a wide range of experiences, including visits and workshops.

Sixth-formers give star performance Students at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College had plenty to celebrate, achieving a 97.4 per cent pass rate in their A levels. A total of 19 of them are toasting the fact that they have been awarded A*s or A grades for three or more of their A-level subjects, with Jay Staker (1A*, 3As) Daniel Harris (4A*s) and Ellie Mae-Barr (3A*s, 1B) among St Brendan’s star performers. Jay is heading off to study philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University, Daniel is going to Cambridge University to study natural sciences and Ellie-Mae will be studying textile design at University College Falmouth.

Dates for the diary as Scouts continue appeal

Sign up as a sponsor or enjoy a night of live music to help the Scouts get a new floor for their HQ. In last month’s edition of Keynshamvoice we featured an extract taken from a newspaper published in the 1940s that showed a list of names of Cubs and Scouts willing to do things to raise funds for their new HQ. Thanks to the power of the press we are delighted that several people (some no longer living in this area) whose names appeared on the list have come forward and will in the coming months be sharing their Scouting memories with the young people of today. We do believe that there are still more who could make contact and we would love to hear from them – simply ring 07714 237525.

Is your family name on our sponsor board yet?

Since we last reported, old Scout members and families have started to grow the sponsor a board list and we continue to move towards our target. In the 1940s the group wanted people to donate £100 in order to achieve their dreams. Today after thousands of young people

from Keynsham have used those same Scouting facilities we are asking families simply to give a minimum £10 donation. Thanks to Somerset Farmers’ Markets the Scouts will be having a stall at the next market in Keynsham on Saturday, September 10. As well as the chance to sponsor a board you will also be able to view some of the group’s records from its 107-year history. We are challenging every family who has a Scouting connection past or present to try and find us three sponsors at £10 per board. If you want a sponsor form, email giants@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or why not pop down and take a look. Put the date in your diary. Three really will be a magic number for us.

‘Best year in teaching’ as Wellsway welcomed first pupils 60 years ago Joan Ellison was one of the original teachers at Wellsway School when it opened its doors for the first time on September 10, 1956. Sixty years on, she is playing a key role in the diamond anniversary celebrations. Wellsway was originally a secondary modern school and it launched on the same site as its partner Keynsham Grammar School. “It was unusual, even then.” Joan recalled. “We shared the same building in the early days. We were in the three-storey grammar school building until the Wellsway building was finished when we moved across. We each taught in both schools and we shared everything. The children had separate lessons and came together at break and lunchtimes and for PE and games.”

Joan Ellison – then Joan Laramy – was one of five teachers at Wellsway School when it opened in September 1956

Joan Laramy, as she was then, barely 20 and fresh out of teacher training college, was one of five teachers in the first year, three for Wellsway and two for the grammar school under the same head teacher, Mr Melbourne. She taught PE and games, as well as English and religious education. “People said to me that the first year of teaching would be the hardest, but for me it was the best,” said Joan. “We were all new together and because we only had the first-years and no older pupils we could really get to

Staff at Wellsway School and Keynsham Grammar School in 1957 know them. We had great fun. “There were a few challenges though; when we started we didn”t have any exercise books and we had to queue up to be issued with paper. “The sports pitches weren't ready so we had to go up to Manor Road playing fields for games.” The first netball and football matches played by Wellsway School, which now has a reputation for sporting excellence, were against primary schools because the secondary pupils were only 11 years old. Wellsway opened with 90 pupils, who wore a grey and green uniform. The grammar school, which had a navy and blue uniform, had 71 pupils. Because Keynsham was in Somerset at the time, many children came in by bus from

Bathamption, Batheaston and Frome. Once they grew, the schools had separate head teachers, buildings and staff until they merged and became a comprehensive in 1971. The school became an academy in 2011. Joan taught at Wellsway until 1964, when she left to have her family. She returned on supply in 1973 and then rejoined the staff, becoming head of special needs until she retired, but even after that she returned for supply teaching. An early aspiration of the new schools was to have a swimming pool. Money was raised and a hole was dug, but it had to be filled in again as the area was needed for a new wing for the growing school. built, but later demolished as needs changed. Joan, who still lives in Keynsham with her husband and has a son and daughter, has many memories of the school over the decades – as will thousands of people in the town and beyond. The school is planning a series of events over the academic year to mark the anniversary and is keen to hear from anyone with stories of interest, photographs or other links to Wellsway. Guests invited to the first celebration, on September 12, include Joan and two other original teachers, Ann Burridge and Ron Gadsby, and some of the first pupils. There will be a number of opportunities for former pupils and staff to get involved in events, culminating in a big reunion next summer.

Residents and visitors will be going behind closed doors across Bath and North East Somerset to find out more about the area’s history and culture this month. Heritage Open Days will be held at venues across the country on September 8 to 11, giving people access to hidden places for free. Locally, the four-day celebration will give people the chance to see Bath Record Office’s oldest document, which dates back to Richard the Liongeart, explore the restored Georgian garden at No.4 The Circus and find out about restoration plans at Cleveland Pools, the oldest open-air pool in the country. Fairfield House, which was home to the last emporer of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, between 1936 and 1941, will also be inviting people in. Keynsham and Saltford will be getting involved too, with the Kier Recycling Depot, Pixash Lane Archaeology Store and Saltford Brass Mill also welcoming visitors. Cllr Patrick Anketell-Jones, Cabinet member for economic development at B&NES Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to explore interesting buildings and places across Bath and North East Somerset for free, and see behind the scenes at venues that are normally closed to the public.” Opening dates and times vary. Walkers celebrate milestone on their way back to better health A walking group helping people take steps to better health has just celebrated its third anniversary. The Age UK Keynsham Walking Group was set up three years ago to help those recovering from illness, falls and accidents, as well as people suffering from mental health problems, get on the road to improved fitness. Launched by volunteers in Bath at the start of 2013, walking groups were soon set up in Midsomer Norton, Paulton, Chew and then Keynsham in August 2013, walking every Monday at 10.30am. A spokesperson said: “Some had experience of walk leading, lots of us did not but what we did have was enthusiasm in truck loads. We started the Keynsham walks with just three leaders and a few people who wanted to walk. Three years on and we have gone from strength to strength and just celebrated our third anniversary. Our oldest member

Leaders and members of the Age UK Keynsham Walking Group as they mark the group’s third aniversary is 90 and we have approximately 22 walkers and five leaders. Everyone agrees that it is a friendly group and they look forward to getting out in the fresh air and improving their health.”

As the school holidays seem a distant memory, we look forward to our next policing challenges. We have a lot of involvement with the local schools, attending fairs and career days, offering information on the many varied and skilled roles the police service has to offer. We attend and advise people of all ages on how they can get involved or shape their career paths to join our service. We also get called into schools to offer advice and support when they are dealing with certain investigations. By the time this goes to print both Wellsway and Broadlands will have welcomed their latest influx of new pupils, sporting slightly oversized uniforms and looking less and less frightened as the weeks go on. We will have our PCSOs patrolling around these schools to offer reassurance and advice in these exciting times. Crime across Keynsham has been relatively low throughout the summer period, although anti-social behaviour (ASB) continues to be the highest

demand for the neighbourhood policing team. We continue to have problems in the Farleigh Road, Warwick Road and Tintagel Close areas. We look to combat this with high visibility mobile and foot patrols. We have also had reports of youths hanging around and climbing on St Francis Church in Warwick Road. We are looking at solutions to stop this but encourage parents to advise their children that this behaviour is not acceptable. The other area that has been coming to light is Keynsham Memorial Park, as large groups of youths have been gathering. This in itself is not a problem and is what the park is designed for. The issue is that some have been riding their mopeds in the

park. We have a firm stance on this behaviour and we will look to seize vehicles being ridden in the park. Minor drug usage has been reported, and again we take a robust stance on this behaviour and will look to prosecute offenders when suitable. Taking a firm stance on these problems now is important for us as Keynsham grows. Our resources are going to be stretched like never before, so we aim to be firm but fair in our application of the law. This month I have also been working with the licensing department from the council, attending a number of local pubs and checking their licensing conditions, with no major problem to report.

We have also been running “test purchasing” operations. This is where off-licences and shops with a liquor licence are visited by underage youths who, under our supervision, attempt to purchase alcohol. As you can imagine, the organisation of these operations is very involved but again I am happy to report that no one was served, which from my point of view is a great success. If anyone wishes to speak to the police about anything or report an incident then don’t forget we have a police desk in the One Stop Shop in Keynsham Civic Centre, which is staffed during office hours from Monday to Friday. For any other non-emergency problems, please call 101 to report them.

News from The Space with Keynsham Arts Consortium It has been a busy summer for The Space – Keynsham’s studio theatre – which aims under the auspices of the Keynsham Arts Consortium to provide a platform for performing arts in the heart of Keynsham. Since work began, more than 4,000 people have attended events at The Space, ranging from concerts to professional touring theatre groups and light opera. This summer saw a sell-out audience for the film Love Thy Nature, together with an introduction from Brazilian film maker and director Sylvie Rokab (more on Page 35). This was preceded by the nationally acclaimed Mikron Theatre Company with their production of Pure – a story of chocolate making from the 19th century until the corporate take-overs of the 21st century. Then there

HMS Pinaffore, far left, and Pure were part of the busy summer line-up at The Space was a three-night run of HMS Pinafore from the Stasima Theatre Company – new, young and entirely energetic! Keynsham’s new online ticket facility, available for whole-community use has taken well over £4,000 in ticket sales this summer, giving Keynsham a central place where tickets can be bought in a professional way. Also, in the near future there will be improved signage on

the The Space’s evening door opposite Iceland in Temple Street, and better displays advertising what’s on. The whole thing is run by volunteers aiming to offer the town a pertinent and exciting range of cultural events. Over the autumn look out for a return visit from vocalist and musician Chris Hutch, and concert by our local light opera group KLOGs in September

(more on Page 27) and a recital from nationally acclaimed classical pianist An-Ting Chang (October). Keynsham Film Works also resumes monthly screenings on the first Thursday of the month in September. Details of all performances can be found in the Keynsham Town Council office and on posters in the library and along the High Street. l What’s On, Page 56

Michael Berkin with dancers from Keyford Dancing School

School hosts ballet masterclass for dancers

Young dancers in Keynsham were put through their paces in a ballet workshop with Michael Berkin from the Professional Dance Experience at the end of term. Pupils from Keyford Dancing School took part in a class based on Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, led by Michael, who trained at the Royal Ballet School and has performed with the Royal Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ballet Ireland and The Northern Ballet. In the coming months, pupils will be entertaining at Charlton House and at the Winter Festival

as well as taking part in the national Tapathon to raise funds for Children in Need on November 20. This has become an annual event for the school, and it is hoped that this year the number of tappers across the country all dancing the same routine at the same time will break the record set by Roy Castle and will be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. All ages take part in this event from four to 84, so if you are interested contact Patricia on 01761 452073 for more information.

Memory Walk medals earn free gym pass People who join a fundraising walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society will be rewarded with a free three-day pass at Keynsham Leisure Centre. The Memory Walk is taking place for the first time in Bath on Sunday, September 18, at Bath Recreation Ground and is expected to involve around 2,500 people. The events take place around the country in September and October and Bristol’s Memory Walk will be held on October 9 starting at Lloyd’s Amphitheatre. People who complete one of

the walks will be able to show their medal at GLL’s leisure centres at Bath and Keynsham and get a three-day pass. The offer is available until Monday, October 31. From the money raised, £650 would pay for a brain scan to help diagnosis, £100 would allow someone with dementia to attend ten Singing for the Brain activity sessions, £20 would cover a month’s attendance at an Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Café. A spectacular summer and a white Christmas!

Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James reports on contests that have challenged the town’s green-fingered residents and how the group plans to create a white Christmas! On Saturday, August 13, some of the children who were winners in the In Bloom 2016 cress man growing competition attended Keynsham Farmers’ Market to collect their certificates and prizes. Youngsters were challenged to grow a “cress head” with free seeds from the town council office, before sending the In Bloom team a photo of the results by July 1. The overall winners’ prizes were presented to Laila and Casper Reynolds and runnersup prizes were awarded to Sam Clough and Elin Carys Dickinson. Certificates and a prize for entering were awarded to Ray Young, Braeden Wells, Matthew Wells, Nancy Burgoyne, Grace Barrow, Emily Trott, Mya Lily Dickinson, Max O’Sullivan, Louis Clay, Oscar Fitzgerald, Hugo Abrahams, Bertie Gilmore, Maria Wills, Sid Kennedy, Maxwell Gammon and Emily Clough. Those children that were unable to attend due to holidays and other commitments have been contacted and their prizes and certificates are available to collect from Keynsham Town Council’s office in Temple Street. The children should be congratulated for their efforts, it was difficult to choose the overall winners, as all the entries were of such high standard. It is wonderful to see the young children taking part in our Bloom campaign and they clearly loved coming along to be presented with their certificates. Keynsham in Bloom organises a number of competitions throughout the Bloom year. This year we have seen a significant increase in entries to all our competitions. In July we were

out and about judging our Keynsham in Bloom garden competition. We welcomed Grenville Johnson, chair of St George in Bloom, to judge the private gardens, allotments community groups and places of worship categories. Rosemary Potter judged our school entries.

In all, we had 54 entries, an increase of 18 this year. Again it was extremely difficult to pick overall winners for each of the categories. The rear garden entries are always an eye-opener, you never know quite what you are going to see when you step into someone’s back garden. We

will be presenting the awards and certificates to all our garden entries at our presentation event on Thursday, October 13, which this year is again being held at the Keynsham Scout Headquarters in Ashton Way. We are also working on a winter project to coincide with Keynsham’s Winter Festival. We are asking for volunteers to make lots of white “pom-poms” for us, which we will be hanging from trees around the town. This idea was taken from Yeovil in Bloom, who last year carried out a similar scheme. We don’t get snow that often now, so this is a fun way of brightening up our town! If anyone would like to make and donate some pom-poms, they can take them into the town council offices at Temple Way. We would also love to hear from any local knitting groups who would like to take part. Finally, we are also organising a seed swap event alongside 1st Keynsham Scouts. You can collect seeds from your garden by just shaking the seedheads onto some paper, then pop the seeds into an envelope and you’re ready for swapping February. Remember, you need to collect your seeds on a dry, sunny day.

Bonzos bring their own brand of ‘musical mayhem’ to city venue A Bristol music venue is bracing itself for two hours of “musical mayhem” led by original members of the Bonzo Dog DooDah Band. St George’s in Clifton will welcome Rodney Slater, Sam Spoons, “Legs” Larry Smith, Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell and Bob Kerr, who all formed the band in the early Sixties, for a gala concert on Saturday, November 26. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band “mini-festival” will also feature special guests, including The Desperate Men surrealist troupe and the 15-piece Keen Sham Town Band, inspired by the Bonzos’ 1969 album Keynsham. The town came to the band’s attention thanks to Harold Batchelor’s well-known adverts on Radio Luxembourg for his football pools “Infra Draw” method. Gareth’s Golden Girls steal win as hockey club hosts memorial day The sun shone as Keynsham Hockey Club came together for their annual charity day on Sunday, August 21, writes our correspondent. The day takes place every year in memory of two members, James Clifford and Kim Baptiste, raising money for British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK. There were seven teams taking part in a seven-a-side round robin tournament plus two junior sides, made up of players from the Keynsham Hockey Club Academy. After an afternoon of hockey worthy of GB’s gold medal-winning side, it came down to an Olympic-style penalty shoot between the Purple Warriors and Gareth’s Golden Girls. Ladies’ keeper Amanda Haskins went in goal for both sides and unleashed her inner Maddie Hinch, pulling off a string of excellent saves as both teams ran at her goal. It then came down to a sudden death

shoot out. Club stalwart Will Harris stepped up only to see his shot saved by Haskins, then new Men’s 1st XI captain Danny Voisey coolly slotted his penalty in the bottom corner to give the win to the Golden Girls. He later said: “It was an incredibly competitive and fun tournament but the standard of team I had around me led by Gareth Brown really shone through and to win

in such an epic way. I’m really honored to have been part of such a great team.” A massive £656 was raised from participation in the event, raffle, barbecue and snack sales. A huge thank you must go to Wellsway School for hosting us during the day. Also, social secretaries Kelly, Lissa and Amanda, who spent a lot of time and effort putting together

the day and making it such a success. If you have been inspired by our GB Olympians and fancy giving hockey a go, or want to get back into playing, Keynsham Hockey Club runs two men’s sides, three ladies’ teams and a Junior Academy side. like France and Spain. Perhaps most importantly it is a tribute to the local workforce and its flexibility. In the last few decades all the major employers have gone. The mines finally went in the early 1970s, Purnell’s closed and finally Cadbury’s was shut down. Each time this happened a large number of jobs went and have been replaced by smaller firms employing a handful of people, some commuting into nearby towns to larger organisations but mainly small-scale entrepreneurial activities. Fifty years ago it would have been difficult to predict such success yet it is today’s reality. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Every month the House of Commons library prepares figures by constituency for the level of unemployment. In North East Somerset the number claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for July is 203 with a further 169 receiving Universal Credit who are required to look for work. This total of 372 represents 0.9 per cent of the working population aged between 16 and 65 years old, which makes our area the 582nd by constituency ranking. That means 581 have higher unemployment and only 68 are lower. This level of unemployment is partly attributable to the success of government policies since the 2008 crisis and the decisions taken by

told that both Keynsham Town Council and B&NES would do these lights. So, where are they? A year is a long time and soon the dark nights will be back. For some of us Keynsham Park is a dangerous place at night. Is this another case of the voices of young people being ignored? We hope not. Councils, please do as you promised. The ladies of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section, Keynsham, would like to thank all those who attended and supported their cream tea afternoon on Wednesday, August 10. We managed to raise £314.18 for the Poppy Appeal. A special thank you to Brizzle, Born & Bread of St George who supplied the most delicious scones. Also to Total Produce and Tesco of Keynsham for their generous donation of produce, which all helped to make the afternoon a resounding success. Thank you all once again for your generosity. First step to cutting Diamond Cards?

I recently discovered that B&NES Council, without any publicity or even consultation of the non-Cabinet councillors, had withdrawn the concession for use of Diamond Cards (for pensioners and the disabled) for journeys on the A4 to Bristol Airport. It now appears that this decision was made on the basis that the fare was a Premium Fare, “significantly higher than the general level of fares for comparable journeys”. To provide the evidence they quote

Keep your promises on lighting for park

A world of quality A world quality A world of of choice A world choice A world ofofvalue

Last year KeynshamNow campaigned for floodlights for the skateboard park in the Keynsham Memorial Park. We attended meetings and were

£14 as the single fare for the 18 miles from Bath to the airport. This does not apply to Diamond Card holders where the fare is £7. Not significantly higher than the £5.60 for Bath to Bedminster Down. It would appear in the rush to quietly bring in this decision, they have not looked in detail at the figures. The projected saving of this change to the total of B&NES’ concessionary fares is less than 0.5 per cent. Even that figure is suspect, as the Diamond Card can be used to go to the Airport Tavern stop and then there is a 0.6-mile walk to the airport. If most do that, the saving will be much lower. It is starting to look like a saving at the expense of the disabled and those who could not walk that far. Or is it a try on to start cutting the use of Diamond Cards? Please let your councillor know your views on this matter. Reg Williams

Sometimes a little extra help is all we need to remain living independently at home and in the local community, it’s where we want to be after all. That’s why Goldcare Professionals provides short term and long term home care and support services for adults from the age of 18 up to the age of 65 and above. We help people recovering from an operation, people with disabilities, sensory impairment, dementia or learning difficulties and the elderly who just need an occasional helping hand. Working closely with our clients, their family and friends, we create person-centred care plans delivering services that take into account habits and health, routine and personal preferences. For care and support that’s compassionate, flexible and that respects an individual’s needs and wishes, contact Julie at Goldcare Professionals.

“I would just like to say a big heartfelt thank you for looking after our dad (pops) so well. Accepting the fact at a young age that carers were required is not easy. What we never could have guessed at that time was that we would have met such genuine, kind, professionals and fun people who would add so much to a quality of life which was otherwise slowly declining. You were all very much part of the family and Pops really enjoyed the time he spent with each and everyone of you. He seemed more comfortable with any of your carers than he did with a lot of other people and I think it was because he was able to relax and be himself. You were also an incredible support for the rest of the family, allowing life to go on as best as possible for the rest of us. As things got tougher towards the end you were a huge support for Mum too, assisting her with appointments and visiting Pops in hospital made a huge difference at a time when we really needed the help. You have all become friends to us, and thank you awfully for putting up with his awful jokes.“ The Harris Family.

Director welcomed by a full house as venue hosts first film premiere

Keynsham hosted its first film premiere last month, welcoming director Sylvie Rokab for the first English screening of Love Thy Nature at The Space, Market Walk – here, organisers report on a successful event. On August 6 at The Space an allage audience of 120 were treated to the first English screening of Love Thy Nature - an awardwinning documentary film. Narrated by Liam Neeson, this beautiful and thought-provoking film focuses on our human connection with the natural world. The film’s writer and director Sylvie Rokab attended from her home in LA along with her mother Sonia, aged 80, who had travelled from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, to join Sylvie for her first visit to England. Following the film, Sylvie led a Q&A session. She was asked what inspired her to work in

Sylvie Rokab, director of Love Thy Nature, at The Space nature cinematography and to create this film, which has been her passion for the last ten years. Sylvie credited her parents for instilling a love of nature at an early age: “My parents used to take us to beaches, mountains, and forests. I’d spend time catching waves, bathing under waterfalls, or chasing critters.

At the end of the evening, Sylvie presented Larissa with a blue glass marble in thanks for arranging the event. She explained that this marble was symbolic of planet Earth as seen from space. Many people worked to make the evening a great success and particular thanks must be expressed to Co-Op South supermarket, Keynsham, for generously donating Fairtrade refreshments for the evening, to Wyevale Garden Centre for loaning pollinator-friendly plants for display and to Sarah Fox for her excellent photographic record of the event.

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

The early morning rains on Sunday, August 21, had ceased when 18 walkers met at the Memorial Park cafe for a three-mile walk around the town visiting some of the gardens that had entered in the recent Keynsham in Bloom competition. Dawn, our leader for the day, had certainly done her homework. As well as admiring the back gardens of several of the entrants, we also walked around some of the community entries. The standard was exceptionally high, even though a couple of the residents said it was coming to the end of the season. How the judges decide who the winners will be, I shall never know. The number of walkers was just right as any more would have been unwieldy. At our final port of call, Liz Fox arranged seating for everyone

and very kindly treated us to light refreshment, as we all admired her magnificent floral display. Liz acted as instructor last December on our festive walk around the hedgerows of Keynsham, collecting shrubbery to make a Christmas wreath, and the consensus of opinion was that we should hold another this year. Many thanks to all concerned.

Coming up...

Sunday, September 4 Meeting at Keynsham railway station at 11am to catch the 11.16 train to Bradford-onAvon to join in their Walkers are Welcome group’s annual Walking Festival. After booking in we shall follow the canal towpath to Avoncliffe, where we shall have a refreshment break and admire this lovely village with its magnificent aqueduct. Heading back to the

town via Barton Farm Park, we shall have time to explore, before catching the 15.56 train back to Keynsham, arriving just before 4.30pm. The day is open to everyone, including children, and because of group discount the train will only cost £7. It would help the organisers to know in advance if you are intending to participate, to enable us to book advanced tickets – although this is only optional. Sunday, September 27 AGM at the Manor House Hotel at 6pm. After the chairman’s report and presentation of accounts, it is intended to elect officers of the group and agree organisers. This is open to anyone who has attended any of the walks during the last year. After the meeting, a programme for the winter will be discussed.

Solicitors back hospital appeal in Will Month

Law firms based in Keynsham have teamed up with the Forever Friends Appeal to encourage people to look after their loved ones by writing a will while raising money for their local hospital. FDC Law and Wards Solicitors are both supporting RUH Will Month in September, helping residents draw up their wills and then donating the willwriting fees to the charity appeal, which supports the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The solicitors will be offering to draw up single standard wills at a reduced price of £100 or two standard mirror wills for £150. Last year, the initiative raised £33,000 towards the care and treatment of patients at the hospital. Jan Witt, In Memory and legacy officer at The Forever Friends Appeal, said: “Some of the best and worst days of our

lives will be spent in the Royal United Hospital. By taking part in the will-writing scheme and putting your own affairs in order, you will not only help your loved ones in the future, but also the patients, family and their friends cared for by the RUH. “We are enormously grateful and absolutely thrilled with the number of solicitors who are generously giving their time for free again and providing the public with affordable wills in support of the RUH to help continue the valuable work it does, it is truly appreciated.” John, a supporter of The Forever Friend Appeal, took advantage of the initiative last year and had a will drawn up along with his wife. He said: “Thanks to this wonderful scheme, we not only have peace of mind that our will has been written professionally and our affairs are in order; but

Jo’s on hand to give local carers help they need People caring for loved ones in Keynsham will find support is closer at hand. The Carers’ Centre is now offering community outreach to families in the town via care support worker Jo Grobler, right. The charity works with people who are looking after someone – perhaps because they have a disability, long-term illness or are frail. Jo said she is looking forward to working with local people to make their lives a little bit easier. “My role in Keynsham is to make sure that anyone looking after someone has the support they need to manage their caring role,” she said. “I can give information and advice; help you find opportunities to take a break; connect people living locally to each other and ensure no carer feels like they have to care on

their own.” The Carers’ Centre works with more than 4,000 people across Bath and North East Somerset who offer day-today care to someone else, a role which can be isolating and tiring. The charity offers free services, including support planning, respite and counselling. If you look after someone and would like to find out how the Carers’ Centre can help, you can call the Freephone number 0800 0388 885 or email info@ banescarerscentre.org.uk To find out more about the Carers’ Centre, and its work across the district, visit www. banescarerscentre.org.uk

Team issues tips to beat the fraudsters

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham Watching the news, I’m reminded how businesses can be a force for positive change. And that sometimes, in order to make those changes, they have to struggle against a Government that thinks people want everything to stay the same. The first story was the reaction to the Government’s childhood obesity strategy. The papers were full of outrage from children’s health campaigners (Jamie Oliver called it an “unforgivable missed opportunity” to curb childhood obesity). But what really struck me was that supermarkets echoed campaigners’ concerns. They strongly criticised the strategy, saying that it would be better if ministers imposed mandatory cuts to sugar levels in food rather than leaving it up to voluntary action by manufacturers. Supermarkets, it turns out, would like to act

Whether the Government helps or hinders, there are a number of farsighted companies getting on with the business of making themselves – and the planet – sustainable for the long term

responsibly, but they need Government to ensure that they all do it. The second story was about renewable energy. In the United States, despite all the horror stories of fracking and burning coal, energy companies are quietly getting on with developing renewable energy streams. The US is reaching a tipping point, where renewable

39

electricity will very soon be as cheap as carbon intensive coal, oil and gas. At that point, all those fossil fuel companies will become pretty much unviable. This tipping point is coming in the UK too. A report by Barclays found that the UK is on the brink of a renewable energy revolution, and the big six energy companies that aren’t investing in it will have real problems a few years down the line. It’s only Scottish and Southern – investing heavily in renewables – that looks like it’ll be sustainable long term. So, whether the Government helps or hinders, there are a number of far-sighted companies getting on with the business of making themselves – and the planet – sustainable for the long term. As customers and citizens, we can support them, and send the Government a message that we too want a sustainable future.

The local Trading Standards team is offering advice to help residents across Bath and North East Somerset avoid falling victim to fraudsters – whether on the doorstep, over the phone or online. Scams that have come to the team’s attention include fake lottery or prize draws, clairvoyant scams, catalogue and brochure scams and calls offering to fix a “fault” with residents’ computer equipment – and many involve asking for money in advance. The council’s Trading Standards team advises anyone who suspects a scam to talk to family or friends, speak with Citizens Advice on 03454 040506 or report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. If you think you’ve already responded to a scam, end further communication and call your bank and cancel any recurring payments. Party by the lake is celebration of the land and a beautiful location When you get to September it might feel like the festival season is over but there is one more big party to come for the Bristol and Bath area. In the rolling hills of the Mendips, on the North Shore of Chew Valley Lake, sits the Community Farm, an organic farm that plays host to a weekend-long festival that has all the elements you’d want from a great party. Great bands, great food, great films and even a spa area. On Friday, September 2, the farm will burst into life and the music and dancing will keep going all the way until Sunday night.

The brainchild of BBC farmer of the year and organic champion Luke Hasell, Valley Fest is set beside Chew Valley Lake. While there is plenty for children – including a Run Wild area with games, wildlife safaris and even street art – there is lots for grown-ups to enjoy. The headline acts are BBC 6Music’s Craig Charles, 1990s indie dance stars Stereo MCs and British music legends The Blockheads. Also on the bill are Bristol live legends Doreen Doreen, DJ Ruben Robinson, Worm Disco Club, The 45’s, Sheelanagig, My Baby, London Afrobeat Collective and many more.

Dogs get their day in spotlight at fun show

The Stereo MCs, left, are among performers at this year’s Valley Fest Food will play a huge part in the festival. As the clock strikes twelve on Saturday night there will be an indulgent midnight feast, including amaretto hot chocolate and plenty of other naughty treats. On Sunday there will be a communal Sunday lunch with blankets spread out across the Village Green, part of the Valley Fest site, with top chefs such as Josh Eggleton (Pony and Trap) and Toby Gritten (The Pump House) using their expertise to create perhaps the ultimate picnic, including pulled pork baps, scotch eggs and salads. Luke Hasell returned to the Chew Valley area to farm the same land that had been in his family for generations after the death of his father. When his mother also died, he decided to take up her passion

I think the ethos of Valley Fest is what makes it different to other festivals – I just want to share the land that Mum and Dad left behind and it’s this communal spirit that is at the heart of Valley Fest Luke Hasell, right

for fundraising and the idea of a festival was born. So as well as 50 bands across three stages, food and drink from the likes of Yeo Valley, Riverford Organic, Pukka Herbs and Orchard Pig, Valley Fest is an event with a strong message. “I think the ethos of Valley Fest is what makes it different to other festivals,” said Luke. “I just want to share the land that Mum and Dad left behind and it’s this communal spirit that is at the heart of Valley Fest. “What also makes Valley Fest unique is the location. We’re in an absolutely stunning part of the county on Chew Valley Lake. Then there’s obviously the food and the farm. Being on an organic farm really allows us to spread the word about organic farming and what that means. “Pumping the land and

livestock with chemicals and hormones never made much sense to me. I just want to make the future a little bit brighter for the next generation and for my kids to eat healthier as well to farm in a more sustainable way.” l Valley Fest tickets can be bought as day tickets or for the whole weekend. Weekend adult tickets cost £80 with children under 16 paying £40 and nippers under 6 going free. A family weekend ticket with two adults and children is £200. Adult Saturday only tickets are £47, Sunday adult tickets are £36. Tickets include camping but you can go for the luxury option of a Tinkerbell tent which will be put up before you arrive. The fifth fun dog show at Compton Dando takes place on Saturday, September 10, this time in conjunction with local charity Mutts With Friends Rescue, writes Ros Anstey. Gates open at noon with classes starting at 1pm. The grand finale is the “Best in Show” award presented by local firm and main sponsor Welcome Home Cleaning. This year the show, presented by Compton Dando’s Community Association, will be staged at Compton Common, situated a short distance from the village up Rankers Hill. There will be free on-site parking at the event and notices will be put up to direct people. There will be classes for nonpedigree entries as well as gun dogs and other pedigree dogs. In addition, there are plenty of “fun rounds”, including agility, best rescue dog and waggiest tail! In the Garden Within a couple of days of writing these notes we shall be in September. Opening the door to autumn is an expression I have heard. But before it arrives there are a few jobs to be done. August brought high temperatures and heavy falls of rain. This has caused the grass to grow and so much mowing. The grass goes into the compost heap or bin with the promise of

On the Plot The main vegetable gardening season is beginning to end and the efforts on the plot should now be directed to autumn sowing and, importantly, preparation for next year. Some gardeners leave the plot unattended during the autumn and winter months but I believe this is not the best alternative. I suggest you dig all the areas once you have removed your crops. The ground will be far easier to work on now as opposed to late winter when it will probably be wet and full of weeds. If you can incorporate some well rotted manure or compost all the better so if

some good material at the end of the process. However, with the high rainfall the grass holds a lot of moisture, so the contents might become too wet or even slimy. Some air is needed to help decomposition, so I turn over my heap. The bin has a removable front so I just drop it down and heave the contents out. After an hour or so it goes back in, now much looser and with plenty of air. If the bin is a plastic type then an airer of the three bentprong type is useful, but only in shallow heaps. It is too heavy to pull out of my heap! Speaking of grass, we are coming to the ritual time of autumn feed, weed and moss application. If you have the energy and not too big a patch, get a wire-tined rake and scratch out all the rubbish from among the roots. That will give water and the granular feed a chance

to get down among the roots. If you have even more energy, take a fork and, before applying the feed, spike the lawn to help moisture and feed to reach the roots. I have a handmade besom, made by a specialist in Buckinghamshire and it is about ten years old, and still going strong. It is most useful for jobs such as flicking anthills away, clearing the edges along grass paths, and getting the grass to stand up before cutting. It is quite heavy with a handle very thick and a bushy broom head. It is very effective in chasing out bits of dead grass, small leaves and other rubbish. Gardens which are well tended still have plenty to offer. We still have a good display of roses, two quite elegant ferns, some very healthy anemone Japonica and the sedums just

turning colour to a reddishbrown. I am quite pleased to see the bees working the flowers, a number of cabbage-white butterflies and sweet peas still producing flowers. One disappointment this year has been the clematis. Out of our total of five only one remains, but that did have some fine blooms. Maybe we should take the hint and plant something different. Despite the rainfall we are still watering the plants in pots, troughs and urns. They do dry out very quickly. The summer flowers have mostly finished and should be cut down. Our lillies and big asters gave a good display but are now gone. Now is the time to give the lawn edges a close cut, clean out any empty pots and put into store, frost-free if possible. Have a general tidy round and check any stakes and supports, and perhaps any ties.

supplies are not to hand then get some on order. As for autumn sowing/ planting then the area needs to be prepared this month in time for sowing in October or early November. This will include spring cabbage plants, winter spinach seeds, hardy broad beans, Japanese onion sets and finally garlic. Again check your supplies and order the seeds/ sets if needed. You could also try sowing some peas that will stand through the winter months and crop in May next year. Choose a round seed variety (not wrinkled) like Feltham First or Meteor and provide the seedlings with cover from cloches. September being the harvest festival time is when the last

of your crops should be picked and stored for winter use. Squashes and pumpkins can be picked and ripened off by storing them in some sunlight for a few days. This ensures the skin is hardened, which improves the likelihood of longer storage. Potatoes, once dried off, should be stored in bags that can “breathe not in polythene bags. Onions and shallots can be stored in net bags or old tights to allow some air circulation. In all cases storage should be in a dry, dark and frost-free environment. Some vegetables like carrots, swede and leeks should be left in the soil until needed. Autumn is a good time to plant most soft fruit e.g. raspberries and blackcurrants,

so pick a spot that is in full sun and again prepare the area well before planting by thoroughly digging and removing perennial weeds. This is very important as removal of perennial weed later is impossible. Bear in mind the eventual size of the fruit bushes and leave plenty of space between each plant. Raspberries will spread by underground root runners so make sure these can be controlled in future years. Once the runner beans have finished cropping check for any unpicked fruit that will swell and provide seeds for next year. Once cleared, lift the bean sticks and don’t leave them in the ground or they will rot. Tie them into bundles and store them upright through the winter.

Lives of local WWI soldiers celebrated

Enjoy a cuppa and cake with villagers

by Ros Anstey Villagers are inviting people from the surrounding areas to come and enjoy a coffee, cakes and the chance to chat to new people at a monthly meet-up. Coffee mornings have been held at Compton Dando Community Hall each month for more than seven years, giving local people and visitors from other areas the chance to get together. Cakes are baked by organiser Alice Prescott, with brownies from daughter Mabel, and the events are hosted by the Compton Dando Community Association. Mrs Prescott said: “I suggested regular coffee mornings to the Community Association, who agreed and set it up. We have been holding coffee mornings each month for at least seven years. I make all the cakes, apart from the brownies which are made by my daughter, Mabel.

“It gives you the chance to meet up and spend some time getting to know each other, so come along and bring your family and friends for a coffee and chat at the parish hall.” Noreen Busby, who was a

reader at the parish church, said: “We get people from Pensford, Woollard, Keynsham and Whitchurch. It’s quite nice to draw in people from elsewhere.” For further information, call Alice on 01761 490600.

An exhibition celebrating men from Compton Dando who served in World War I was shown at the parish church as part of this summer’s weekly Sunday tea afternoons, writes Ros Anstey. Each afternoon tea has featured a different exhibition featuring a variety of themes. The World War I exhibition featured details of the 26 local men who served in the war along with photographs. Two of these men – Harold and Henry, who were born in Summerleas – were the uncles of the late Edwin Penny, a local artist, whose widow, Betty, was at the exhibition. This year being the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the exhibition was a timely reminder of the sacrifices made by so many during the 1914-1918 conflict. One of the organisers, Joy Webb, said: “It proved to be our busiest afternoon yet. We received many complimentary comments.”

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society The Story of the Keynsham Mules

A short walk upstream along the River Chew from the Memorial Park leads to green fields beyond Albert Mill and Steel Mills. Today this valley, with Conygre Farm up on the right, is a lovely scene, sometimes with a few cattle grazing. One hundred years ago, during World War I, it looked very different. There were animals grazing, but they were not cattle. They were mules – hundreds of them. Anyone who has seen the film War Horse will know that both horses and mules played a huge part in Army operations, where mechanized transport was only just beginning. Mules had advantages over horses for transporting materials and hauling guns across rough terrain. They needed less food and water, were more tolerant of extreme conditions and proved more resistant to disease and injury. And they possessed enormous strength and stamina. Many British animals were requisitioned but this did not meet demand; mules were not widely owned in Britain. So the Army’s Remount Service bought hundreds of thousands of them from abroad, mainly from North America but some from South America and Spain. Those from America were shipped to Avonmouth; the large Remount Depot at Shirehampton could not cope with the numbers, and Keynsham was one of 12 additional mule depots set up to

provide rest, recuperation and training for the animals. The mules were brought by train to Keynsham station – the late Mary Fairclough recalled as a child seeing them being driven from the goods yard; it was probably 1915. They went up Bath Hill, down by the New Inn through what is now the park, crossed the river at Dapps Hill Bridge and then up past the

then Workhouse to Conygre Farm. The animals then spent several weeks grazing the fields on the sides of the Chew Valley to restore them to good condition before being taken back to the station to travel on to France and the horrors of the Western front. Training the animals to work together and the soldiers how to

handle them was probably a challenge – mules have become synonymous with stubbornness and they could not be treated in the same way as horses. In the town, the mules left a lasting impression and one man described the fields as being so thick with animals that you couldn’t see a blade of grass. Like all military establishments, it also brought work to the area. Someone who grew up in the blacksmith’s family in Marksbury remembers as a teenager hearing his aunt describe how they had to work night and day to provide horseshoes for the mules. Of course, all the memories of this activity are now secondhand but it is important to keep the knowledge of this small contribution that Keynsham made to the Great War. (The local aspects of this account were recorded by Brian Vowles in the society’s Journal for 2014.)

Back to nature

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group On Saturday, August 13, we explored the local Manor Road Woodland with butterfly expert John Aldridge. It was a warm and sunny day, much to our relief, as butterflies tend to shy away from cool, wet conditions. We saw 16 speckled wood butterflies, which like dappled sunlight between the trees, and 12 meadow browns, which as their name suggests prefer open grassland. There were also several commas, green-veined and large white butterflies, three gatekeepers and – much to everyone’s delight – a peacock butterfly. We also identified some dayflying moths (including the oak eggar moth, which has not been seen in Keynsham before, and Nemophora metallica, which has antennae longer than its body), azure damselflies, and common darter and migrant hawker dragonflies. There was even a late tadpole in the pond, ignored by the chiffchaff standing on a water-lily leaf and the buzzard flying and calling overhead. A small ladybird on a blue scabious flower was a surprise, as it was yellow instead of red, and had 14 spots! Thanks to Rita Andrews, Andrew Harrison and John Aldridge for their excellent photos.

On a glorious summer evening, members of the group turned their attention to the woodland’s nocturnal creatures, enjoying a moth extravaganza! Led by Mr Aldridge and Alan Bone, two light traps were set up, the lights powered by a small generator, and we waited for night to fall, entertained by late roosting birds and a curious fox. Once the beautiful red sunset had subsided, more than 40 moth species were attracted to the lights (tricked into thinking they were following the light of the moon!), then caught and identified before being released to continue their life cycles. Many have evocative common names, such as flame shoulder, dingy footman, ruby tiger and buff arches, while others answer only to scientific names, such as Carcina quercana and Eudonia lacustrata. The diversity of moth size, shape, form and colour is astonishing, from tiny dull greybrown “micro-moths” to striking reds and yellows to superbly mottled and camouflaged carpet moths among the larger “macromoths”. Experts and novices alike were equally enthused by these unassuming lepidopterans. We all got to bed late that night – but it was well worth staying up for!

Switch shopping for swapping at clothing event

People of all ages took part in last year’s Colour Fun Run

Fun run brings a burst of colour to autumn A charity run in which participants end up covered in every colour of the rainbow is returning to Bristol in October. People can walk, jog, run or even skip the Colour Fun Run’s 5km course at Oldbury Court Estate on October 2 to raise money for Julian House

and its work to help people overcome homelessness. At every kilometre, participants are covered in coloured powder and last year saw 600 people of all ages take part. Tickets – including family tickets - are now on sale. To sign up visit www. thecolourfunrun.co.uk

Residents will have the chance to swap till they drop when Bath hosts its second Big Clothes Swap this month. The initiative gives people the chance to declutter their wardrobes without sending the unwanted items to landfill. Items to be swapped need to be in a good clean condition and ready to be worn again. Local upcyclers wil also be on hand to share tips on how to give clothes a new lease of life, including Helen from Kecks Clothing, Jennifer from The Sewing Skills Project and Aimee from Bristol Textile Recyclers. Councillor Martin Veal, Cabinet member for community services, said: “Almost four per cent of our black bag waste is made up from textiles that could have been passed on or recycled. The Bath Big Clothes Swap is a

great opportunity to declutter your wardrobe and make sure the clothing you no longer wear or want doesn’t end up in our rubbish collections.” The Bath Big Clothes Swap will be held at The Guildhall on Wednesday, September 14, from 6.30pm. Entry to the clothes swap is £5 and includes a welcome drink. Places are limited and must be booked and paid for in advance by calling Council Connect on 01225 394041 or at one of the council’s One Stop Shops. Anyone unable to attend the event can do their bit to recycle clothes, shoes and accessories by putting unwanted items out in a plastic bag for their weekly green box recycling collection or donating them to charity. l Roger Bannister: Twin Tracks – The Autobiography As a teenager in the 1940s Roger Bannister went to Beechen Cliff School in Bath and most mornings he would run from his home in Lansdown to school – the start of his enjoyment of running. This enjoyment of running would culminate in a windy late spring day in 1954 and a then young, Oxford medical student would fling himself over the finishing line of a mile race and wait very patiently for the time – three minutes, fifty-nine point four seconds. A world recordbreaking achievement. In this delightful autobiography Roger Bannister tells the full story of the hard work and dedication that made him such a famous athlete but also a doctor and eminent neurologist. With characteristically strong views on drugs in sport and the modern athletics, this book

l The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood The book follows the fate of a down and out couple, Charmaine and Stan, who find themselves living in their car after the economic crash. However, hope is presented to them when Charmaine sees an advertisement for Consilience, a social experiment in which they are provided with a suburban paradise on the condition that they swap this for a prison cell every second month. As quickly as their problems seem to have been solved, Stan and Charmain find their relationship and their world unravelling. Each develops an obsession for their “alternates”, the people who occupy their house when they are in prison. As the sinister side of the experiment begins to be revealed Atwood ensures that the hopelessness and absurdity of the situation is dealt with in a dry and comical way. For fans of Dystopian/Orwellian fiction. l In Bitter Chill by Sarah Ward A debut crime novel from Sarah Ward, set in the rural Derbyshire town of Bampton, where in January 1978 two girls go missing: Rachel Jones returns, Sophie Jenkins is never found. later, Sophie Jenkins’s mother commits suicide. Rachel Jones has tried to put the past behind her and move on with her life. But news of the suicide reopens old wounds and Rachel realises that the only way she can have a future is to finally discover what really happened all those years ago. Alongside Rachel’s story is that of a group of detectives, headed by DI Francis Sadler, who reluctantly open up the old case file. Family loss and secrets are reopened. This is a fast-paced, engrossing story and one book that I could not put down. Many other reviewers have said that the book follows a Nordic Noir sensibility and the lead detective is an interesting character. As a debut novel it is well written and I cannot wait for the next in the series.

Young Adult Fiction

l The Fugitive by John Grisham This is book five from the popular author John Grisham and the 13-year-old Theodore Boone series – a boy who thinks he is a lawyer and courtroom hero. Theodore was supposed to be having fun with his friends, not playing detective and stalking a serial killer. He is on a class trip seeing the sights of the capital city. But he hadn't counted on seeing the most wanted man in the history of his home town, Strattenberg. Suddenly Theo is caught up in the hunt for an accused murderer, alongside the FBI.

Theo knows he’s getting too involved – and things could become even more dangerous, because if this case goes back to court, it will be down to him. Will justice finally be done? A good old-fashioned mystery for under-15s from the great thriller writer John Grisham.

Thought for the Month with Rev Philip Simpkins, Keynsham Methodist Church

Golden Moments Following a highly successful Olympic Games in Rio set against the backdrop of beautiful scenery both the media, the press and many sports fans have been reflecting on what was for us our “Golden Moment” of the Games. Maybe it was Mo Farah leaping for joy after winning the gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Perhaps it was Justin Rose “putting” that last hole and taking gold in the golf. What a sight it was watching the Brownlee brothers (when I should have been doing something else!) racing both with and against each other in the triathlon! My old dad was so excited to see Nick Skelton at 58 years old win the equestrian individual

show jumping event and then again what thrilling races we have seen both in the cycling and the rowing! No doubt the Paralympic Games during September will also produce some wonderful moments. Much to my surprise, I have to say that my “Golden Moment” came in the final of the women’s hockey. I wasn’t really watching it to begin with, it was just on in the background, but as the match progressed with our backs against the wall, defending for

dear life, yet somehow able to level the game at 3-3 I was hooked. As the match went to penalties I fully expected we would lose (I usually watch football!) but following an incredible performance by our goalkeeper and seeing the winning shot fly into the net I leaped and shouted for joy, much to the consternation of my wife who was asleep in bed at the time! The sheer delight on the faces of that GB team and their ecstatic celebrations were for

me my “Golden Moment” of the Games. The next morning I was struck by the interview given on TV by the captain of Britain’s gold medal-winning hockey team, Kate Richardson-Walsh, who said the vision was to “be the difference, create history and inspire the future”. What a fantastic slogan for life! What a motto to live by whether it is in sport, at work, in the community, in politics or for some of us through the way we live out our faith. As a Christian it made me think of the radical and often challenging life of Jesus who certainly made a difference to many people’s lives, definitely created history and whose teaching to live at peace with one another and God can certainly inspire the future.

A ‘jolly good innings’ for Bill, 97

Keynsham resident Bill Chalklen could not have squeezed much more into his active life – his family pay tribute to a man who they say believed firmly in giving something back to repay the benefits you have enjoyed.

Bill Chalklen was born at home in Portsmouth on February 10, 1919 and died on July 20, 2016 aged 97, at St Philip and St James Residential Home in Keynsham where he had lived since November last year. He was active until recently but was increasingly hampered by deafness and failing eyesight. As his eyesight deteriorated he enjoyed attending the local Macular Support Group, above Boots Opticians in the High Street. Bill was proud of gaining a

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

place at Portsmouth Northern Secondary School for Boys and initially worked in a bank. He was posted in 1936 to the Admiralty (now Ministry of Defence) at Portsmouth Dockyard. During the Second World War he was posted to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. He spoke frequently of the beauty of the countryside, made many friends and developed his love of curries – the hotter the better! On his return to UK in 1945 he was posted to the Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland, then back to Portsmouth, on to Malta, Plymouth, Rosyth again, Warrington and Singapore before returning to the UK in Bath. He moved to Saltford, then to Keynsham where he had enjoyed living for the last 31 years. He made the most of his retirement. He learned computer skills at Radstock College in his late 70s and followed world events (in particular the rate of the euro against the pound) with interest.

He always enjoyed watching and playing sport. He was a lifelong supporter of “Pompey” football but his real love was tennis. He loved going to Wimbledon each year and played into his 80s, at Bath Tennis Club and latterly at Saltford Tennis Club. In his retirement he learned Italian and attended French and German classes. He travelled extensively in Europe including to Friedberg near Munich with the Chippenham Twinning Association, even living there for a couple of years. He also travelled to Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan, subsequently hosting Japanese visitors at his home in Keynsham. He was a devoted church member and on moving to Keynsham he initially worshipped at St John’s, where he held many roles and was involved in the Council of Churches’ activities, and more recently St Dunstan’s. He had also been a keen campanologist, ringing the bells for

many years at St John’s and going on outings to ring at other towers. He loved hearing the sound of the church bells from his house in Old Vicarage Green. Bill was president of the Keynsham and Saltford Probus Club 1978 to 1979; Secretary of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers for 11 years up to 1986; and a past Chairman of Saltford Tennis Club. He also held positions of office as a Freemason. Even when he moved to St Philip and St James last year he joined the Residents’ Committee. Bill enjoyed a full, interesting and active life and could not have squeezed much more into it. Overall he had “a jolly good innings”! Bill leaves two daughters, five grandchildren and one grandson. A Requiem Mass was held for him at St Dunstan’s on August 20 and afterwards committal at Bath Crematorium.

Bid to bring rural internet up to speed

In Good Health with Sam Wright, at How far is 10,000 steps?

Most of us have heard the advice that in order to stay fit and healthy we should aim to walk 10,000 steps each day, but just how far is 10,000 steps and how easy is it to achieve. For the “average” person 10,000 steps works out to approximately five miles, however, this will depend on the individual’s stride length. This will vary significantly according to a few factors, most obviously the length of their legs. Now that our smartphones and watches are able to count how many steps we are taking each day many of us are aiming to reach this target. For some this is a significant change in activity levels, which can be a real shock to the body. If you are thinking about

making this change I would suggest following some simple dos and do nots; Do not l Do not plan on reaching this target from day one – try to build gradually. Even the best walkers take rest days and build up gradually. l Do not walk five miles a day in your office shoes. If you are going to do one long walk a day make sure you are wearing sensible footwear – office shoes are not designed for this

purpose, especially if you plan to go off-road. Do l Do stretching and strengthening exercises as a way to stay injury free. These exercises do not need to be complex or need to involve heavy weights. l Do stay hydrated – especially in the heat. l Do seek professional healthcare if you have any pain or problems.

People living in Compton Dando and the surrounding area are looking forward to high speed broadband in the near future, writes Ros Anstey. Clive Howarth, who is the champion for Newton St Loe-based TrueSpeed in the Compton Dando area, said: “People living in rural areas like us often suffer from slow broadband speeds.” Now TrueSpeed is planning to bring high speed broadband to local communities. Mr Howarth said: “At the moment our broadband speed is 2Mb/s but when TrueSpeed takes over it will be 100 Mb/s, which is among the highest in the country.” The optical cables have already been laid and Compton Dando will be going live in approximately six weeks. Other areas, building out from Bath into the Chew Valley, will follow. Mr Howarth said: “Priston is already online. Compton Dando is next, followed by the Stantons and Bishop Sutton.”

Living Well with Andy Workman, practice director at The Beehive Natural Health Practice The prize is not always in winning

We cannot fail to be impressed or even inspired by the performance of Team GB at the Olympics. What a haul of medals. Every medal, regardless of its colour or the event in which it was awarded, was a celebration; not only of the victory on the day, but of the amount of time, effort, money and support that had gone into its achievement. There were too many notable events to list them all, but one that struck me immensely was the gold medal won by Mo Farah in his 10,000-metre race. We all expected a great deal of Mo; he is, after all, a fantastic athlete, with a performance history that suggested he would do well. He went into the race confident of his own potential and enjoying the support of a nation’s confidence in the same,

but then disaster struck. He fell. Mo Farah, the current Olympic champion, was down, trampled and every other runner was passing him as he struggled to get up in the melee. Did he stop? Did he sit there, cursing his luck and licking his wounds? Did he blame anyone else or demand a restart? Did he cry foul play or seek revenge on another? No. He got up, got running and went on to win the race and the glory. A truly inspirational moment if ever we needed one. We could learn so much from that performance alone. Throughout our lives we all get moments like that. No, of course I’m not implying that it happens on the running track for all of us, but we are all a part of the human “race”. We are all running our own “event”. We often train hard for our own

specific discipline, whether it’s sport, work, relationships, diets or anything else in which we are trying to succeed. We often start off apprehensive, but soon grow in confidence and ability through practice, sometimes out-performing others in doing so, but then comes the fall All too often we allow that hiccup to bring our dreams to an end. We instantly believe that we’ve failed and that it’s not worth trying anymore. We don’t always need medals to identify outstanding performances either. Even those who cross the line last, even having been lapped in some cases, are winners in their own right. They have done their best, and no one can ask any more of them than that (especially themselves). None of us need the promises of awards to keep us going, to give life our best efforts and

to be proud of what we achieve. There will be times when we are doing well, just as there will be times that we take a tumble, but our success will be measured by the way we get back up and keep going. If we sit and mither about how much time and effort we have expended, only for someone else or even fate to bring us crashing down, then we can only lose. If on the other hand we follow Mo Farah’s example, we take the tumble when it comes, we get up, ignore our hurts and keep going, even picking up the pace in doing so, we can be sure to finish the race. We may not win a medal, but like every one of the competitors in Rio, we will have done our best, often requiring “Olympian” effort, and we can complete the race with our heads held high. Surely that prize in itself is absolutely priceless.

Pen to Paper In Retirement

Clarence sat in the dark and mused. He liked Samantha. He hadn’t expected to. Aged 31, he feared she’d be too young to handle him. Many of his mates hadn’t survived. They’d been written off, consigned to the scrapheap, or were in depressing demise. Take Colin, whom they passed weekly; sad eyes, unkempt appearance, uncared for. Deflated ego - four flat tires. Scrapheap fodder, a sad end for a racy Cortina. Robin the Reliant’s front tyre had come off leaving him with his nose in the dirt and his paling rear end in the air. Duck-ass death, Clarence called it. These days, roads were mayhem. Modern cars were death on wheels; arrogantly spitting out pops, vrooms and skids. Edging forwards nosing the rear of the car in front like sniffing dogs. When Samantha first got him, he’d constantly sputtered “Choke! Choke!” She used too much, then had the gall to slam the wheel and yell “Clarence!” when he stalled. He’d stay stalled, sulking until she took responsibility for

her behaviour and apologised. She was an improvement on the previous owner who swapped him for a Harley Davidson. He hadn’t seen that coming. Samantha called him an “investment”. He’d been a status symbol (a Triumph Vitesse, not a humdrum Herald), a reliable runner, a whim and an investment. Not bad for 51 years on this planet. In his heyday with the Countess, his first owner, he’d skidded around country lanes. She was responsible for his only speeding ticket. She was barking mad really. It’s a wonder he survived. The garage door cranked and a sunlit Samantha came into view and held up a sponge, “Bath time!” Samantha carefully washed him and painstakingly polished chrome, Clarence glinted proudly. He was loved, which is all anyone wants.

Bowlers kept busy as summer rolls on

Bowling in Keynsham Memorial Park continues unabated with the final league matches being played, and club members being knocked out of various club competitions as we head towards finals day, writes our correspondent. While this has been

happening two special fixtures have taken place. At the start of August, Somerset played host to Middlesex in the annually contested Jack See Trophy. Bowling of the highest standard was on view as Middlesex came out on top by six shots. On a very hot day in the middle of the month the annual fixture between the club’s ladies and gents took place. As ever the

ladies were not prepared to “give an inch” and a highly competitive game took place. To be fair to all concerned, the result can be best described as close. At the end of the match the gents entertained the ladies – and themselves – to a high tea. As one of our gents put it: “It is our turn to pamper the ladies.” The club has recently taken

delivery of three arbours as a result of a generous legacy from one of its recently deceased lady members Lillian Williams. These are positioned in the corners of the club, and our picture shows the ladies’ and gents’ captains, Mo Dickinson and Bob Edge, sitting in one of the arbours surrounded by the two teams.

Masterful victory for pub petanque team The highlight of Keynsham’s petanque calendar, the Ship Masters competition, took place at The Ship on Sunday, August 14, writes our correspondent. Teams from across the region gathered to battle it out for the Bristol Blue Glass trophy. The weather was kind and the setting was at its most beautiful. After a long day of tense

matches the eventual winners were Ship team Jane Cox, Mike Cox and Ship Inn general manager Richard Weymouth. Our picture shows the team being presented with trophies by club president Alan Hulme. The plate competition was won by another Ship team – Alan Chappell, Mike Mills and John Day.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field The 2016/17 season started for Keynsham Town with their first FA Cup appearance for six seasons at Bemerton Heath Harlequins in front of a paltry attendance of 46 (of which more than half were the Ks’ loyal followers!). It was a very promising performance against a team from a higher level and the Ks created some good openings; however, they failed to capitalise on them, especially in the second half, and slipped to a 1-0 defeat. The first evening game of the season saw their first league game when they hosted Almondsbury UWE, and what a thrilling encounter it proved to be! Keynsham only had Sam Duggan’s far post header to show for their first-half domination before they were pegged back 10 minutes into the second half. Centre-forward Matty Brown then capped a superb display with his first goal for the club, before Almondsbury looked to have stolen a point with an injury-time equaliser. However, young defender Jordan Anstey thundered home a swerving drive from 20 yards for his first senior goal for the club in the fourth minute of stoppage time to seal all three points. Manager Chris King said: “We knew Almondsbury would improve in the second half but it was still very comfortable until they scored out the blue to equalise. It was good to see a positive reaction, though, to retake the lead through Browner. “Hopefully it was a lesson learnt when we conceded the late goal and it was only because of the great strike from Jords that we picked up the three points in the end. Having said that, to react like we did after such a late goal was of credit to the lads. We’ve stressed about never giving up in games and this reconfirmed why we need that strong mentality.” Next up were Western League newcomers Bishops Lydeard, who made their first visit to

The Ks in action at Corsham Town Crown Fields. Matty Brown scored an early goal to give Keynsham the lead, but in similar fashion to the Almondsbury game, they couldn’t get that crucial second goal while they were on top. The visitors caused a few problems in the second half until 18-year-old Cameron Shorney sealed the points with a great free kick in the 89th minute. The following Tuesday saw the Ks make their first ever trip to The Flying Monk Ground to play the other Western League new boys, Malmesbury Victoria. The hosts looked a very strong outfit and Keynsham were very much second best and didn’t impose themselves on the game well enough. After Malmesbury scored early on, the Ks struggled to find their normal quality in the last third. Pat Davison hit the post with a header on 70 minutes when they were only 2-0 down, which could have changed the game. Apart from that, though, Malmesbury were good value for their 3-0 win. The next game was at home to Corsham Town, and Keynsham failed to overturn a 2-0 half-time deficit and fell to a 2-1 defeat despite a well-taken late goal by Pat Davison. Chris King said:

“This result was more of a shock than anything, we’ve built up this strong home record over the last year and perhaps got to a stage where we possibly just expect to gets wins. Saturday proved that we can’t have that mentality and we need to remember that it took hard work and focus to produce those previous results. “It was a disjointed performance, but arguably we still should have got something from the game. We lacked our killer instinct in front of goal and conceded two poor goals from our point of view. This made it an unnecessary uphill task. Our goal came too late on, we ran out of time in the end.” Four days later, however, Keynsham visited their happy

71

hunting ground of the GFA headquarters and thumped Roman Glass St George 6-0! After a fairly even first 30 minutes, Matty Brown’s tap-in opened the floodgates and they scored six goals in half an hour either side of the break. Their football was breathtaking at times, as Brown secured his first hat-trick for the Ks and Kyle Box, Sam Duggan and Ben Harris also chipped in with excellent finishes. The victory moved the Ks up to fourth place in the table, with nine points from five games. The Reserves have only played twice so far, falling to a 4-1 defeat at Peasedown Miners Welfare before securing an excellent 2-0 away win at Cutters Friday. Goals so far have come from Liam Crispin (two) and Lee-Roy Cochrane. The A Team and Under-18s begin their campaigns in the Bristol & Suburban League and Somerset Floodlit Youth League in September. Club Secretary Julian French said: “As well as the player sponsorship deals available, where fans have the opportunity to pick their favourite Keynsham Town player and get some great benefits through a seasonlong sponsorship for a one-off payment of only £25, the club are also offering season tickets to our fans for home league games in the 2016-17 season. These are priced at £90 for age 16-65 and £45 for over-65s, and offer a good reduction in the matchday price for those of you who attend most home games here at Crown Fields.” Anyone interested should contact Julian at jules1233@live. com or on 07814 609853. Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

Tie ends bowlers’ promotion hopes

A draw in their penultimate game of the season brought Frys Bowling Club’s hopes of promotion to an end, writes our correspondent. On August 18, Frys welcomed Ardagh to Somerdale. With both sides still in with a chance of promotion, all was to play for. The game was tight all the way through with no rinks getting a big advantage. The tight nature of the game went all the way to the end, with Ardagh winning the third rink and Frys picking up one on their last end to tie. Frys held a one shot lead into the final end. With one bowl left, Frys’ skip connected with the Ardagh shot but Ardagh’s bowl didn't move far enough. The game ended in a 41-41 draw with both sides picking up five points, bringing both teams’ promotion hopes to an end. Scores: Rink 1: 15-12; Rink 2: 15-15; Rink 3: 11-14; Frys 41-41 Ardagh (5-5). The previous weeks had seen

Frys lose two away games, first at Avonmouth and then at Canford. The club did, however, score a huge 62-35 win when they welcomed Knowle ‘B’ to Somerdale on August 4. Also during August, the quarter final of the Somerset County Wedmore Plate saw Frys travel to Bloomfield. A rainy night made for heavy conditions and Bloomfield took the early lead, but Frys held steady closing the gap. Bloomfield responded after the halfway point and pulled away reach the semi-finals, ending Frys’ involvement in cup matches for 2016. There was success for Frys, however, against local rivals Keynsham when they claimed the annual Alsop Shield on August 5, winning 88-64. If you are interested in joining Frys Bowling Club or would like to give bowls a try, contact the secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959 or email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com

Clubs battle it out in 46th year of tournament A long-standing annual football tournament got an extra boost this year with £150 sponsorship from developer Taylor Wimpey. The Fry Club Cup and Brunel Subsidiary Shield competition, now in its 46th year, takes place over three weeks, during which 32 11-a-side teams from local clubs took part. The finals were held at Somerdale Pavilion on Sunday, August 7, with St Aldhems AFC winning the Fry Club Cup after defeating Totterdown United AFC 6-2. Wick FC’s match against Odd Down AFC went to penalties after a 1-1 draw with Wick eventually claiming the Brunel Subsidiary Shield with a 4-2 win. The annual match for the Steve Tucker Memorial Trophy, played in memory of a respected

local referee and friend of the Fry Club, was between Lebeq FC and Mendip Broadwalk FC, with the latter winning 3-1. The £150 sponsorship covered the cost of match balls for the tournament, during which organisers raised £500 through pitch-side collections, which will go towards health projects run by the British Heart Foundation and Aquaterra Leisure, which operates the Somerdale Pavilion. Patrick Shanahan, general manager of the Somerdale Pavilion, said: “Aquaterra Leisure are delighted to have been able to host the Fry Club Cup at our new venue this year and, in doing so, continue the legacy of a sporting event that goes back over four decades.”
