As a result, bosses at the chain have pledged to speed up the clearing of tables outside its premises at Market Walk and put up notices asking customers to dispose of their waste responsibly. Chief Womble Erica Davies said: “We noticed the first Subway litter in Carpenters Lane within five hours of the store opening and so decided to record when and where we see their litter to give us information on the spread of litter from one takeaway store in our town. “We are not particularly picking on Subway, but because their packaging is distinctive it is easy to identify and gives us information which is useful. We have also been photographing and tweeting our ‘sightings’ linking this to our #noplaceforlitter campaign, and this was picked up by Subway, who are now liaising with us and B&NES on ways to reduce the litter generated by the customers using their outlet. “Interestingly, it has been
quite localised and has included the park, where unfortunately some has been spotted floating off down the river.” The Subway outlet at Market Walk is the chain’s 2,500th store to open in the UK. A Subway spokesperson told Keynshamvoice: “As responsible retailers, Subway franchisees work closely with their local communities and have policies in place to ensure waste is disposed of efficiently and recycled where possible. Although our stores work hard to minimise the impact of litter in the community, we rely on individual customers to dispose of their litter responsibly. “The Keynsham store has bins in place to encourage customers to dispose of waste, however litter is sometimes blown onto the street from the tables in its outside seating area. As a result, the store will be increasing litter patrols within the external seating area and increasing signage on refuse management for staff in order to resolve the matter as soon as possible.”
Barber hopes to reopen soon after blaze A Saltford barber whose shop was badly damaged following a fire on August 9 says he hopes to be back at work inside his premises within weeks. Morris Mercato says it’s currently “business as usual” for Morris’s Barber Shop as he works from a temporary building outside his shop in Bath
Road. But with repairs going well he hopes to reopen the barber shop within two to three weeks from the end of August. Anyone with information on the fire, which started at about 1.45am and is being treated as suspicious, can contact police on 101 quoting reference 5217181621.

Keynsham Wombles tweeted images of discarded Subway packaging Hoping to dramatically reduce the amount of rubbish dropped in Keynsham’s streets, the Wombles launched their Litter Free Town project – now called #noplaceforlitter – in March. As part of the campaign, the group has been contacting retailers in the town to enlist their help – but with limited success so far, says Erica. “The Coop was the only national retailer that responded and attended our workshop,
while a couple of the local retailers were very interested and are doing their best to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging.” As well as encouraging businesses to take steps to ensure their waste doesn’t become litter, the Wombles also say they hope to see firms looking at biodegradable packaging to reduce the impact of items that do end up on the streets or in parks. “These products are becoming available and the Little Red Coffee Van [at Keynsham Station] is already using them and I understand Costa is running some trials nationally. We would love to hear from other outlets in Keynsham using biodegradable packaging to share experiences of what does and doesn’t work with our networks.” The #noplaceforlitter campaign was recently awarded funding from the People’s Lottery
to help develop Keynsham as a pilot for other towns that would like to adopt the initiative. Projects in the pipeline include #noplaceforlitter ashtrays for Keynsham coffee shops, pubs and restaurants and working with B&NES to create a smoking area in the Market Walk to limit the spread of cigarette butts. The Wombles have also applied for funding to provide Gum Drop bins for the walkway between Ashton Way car park and the High Street. The Wombles’ next big litter blitz takes place on Sunday, September 17, from 11am to 1pm, meeting in the gravel car park by the Lock Keeper pub – litter-picking equipment will be available, as well as cake.
Resurfacing work to begin on bypass From Page 1 The first phase of the scheme will involve road closures, contraflow traffic, the suspension of parking and three-way traffic lights at Broadmead roundabout and is expected to last for three weeks from the end of September. It will be followed by a second, larger phase of work in spring 2018. Councillor Mark Shelford, B&NES Council’s Cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum while this essential work is carried out. Undertaking full resurfacing now will both help save us money in the long-term and reduce the need for future repair works.” The work follows the awarding of £2 million by the Government for bypass improvements in August in response to a joint bid by B&NES and Bristol City Council. Police leaders want to hear residents’ views Keynsham and Saltford residents can have their say on local policing matters when Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens and Chief Constable Andy Marsh host a forum in Bath. People living and working across Bath and North East Somerset are being invited to put their questions to the policing team and the two leaders at the Guildhall in the city centre on September 28. The PCC said: “The previous forum I held at the Guildhall was one of the most well attended to date and we’ve hosted forums all over the Avon and Somerset police force area. “Some really interesting topics were covered, with the majority of the discussion focusing on road safety, including cycling in the city, speeding and illegal parking. “I’m looking forward to returning to the Guildhall and keen to see what questions residents have for me.

PCC visits football A holiday football club for youngsters in Keynsham received a visit from Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens in August. Ms Mountstevens dropped in to meet coaches at Kelston Road Football Club to find out more about the initiative, which offers free coaching sessions to help improve children’s social skills as well as encouraging them to enjoy sport. The scheme is supported by the Commissioner’s Community Action Fund and was awarded £2,415 for its efforts in aiming to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. This is the second time Ms Mountstevens has been invited to the club after initially meeting with Nick Dewfall, who runs the club and won a PCC Pride Award in 2016 for his work, before being invited back to one of the summer school holiday sessions and to meet the coaches on August 23.
Speaking after the visit, Ms Mountstevens said: “I set up my Community Action Fund for initiatives like those provided by the club to help make a difference to young people’s lives. This project is not only great for community cohesion and bringing everyone together, but while the sessions are being run there is a reduction in antisocial behaviour in the area. “I’m always delighted to see these types of projects first-hand and to meet the people working behind the scenes to make them a success.” Head coach Michael said: “I’ve been coming here since I was nine, never missed a session! I was home-schooled because of anxiety, and this gave me the confidence I needed in myself. I am now a Level 1 qualified football coach and have just finished college. “This has been such a brilliant opportunity for me as I now have a job with Bath City. I just hope

We don’t know what some of the older kids would be doing if they didn’t have this through the holidays. Should I have pet insurance?
P
et insurance is a safety net to help pay for the unexpected. As humans we have the NHS, but there is no NHS for pets and, like us, they can fall ill or have an accident at any time. Fortunately, modern veterinary advances allow us to offer highly sophisticated treatments and procedures for pets – we routinely perform heart surgery, use MRI and CT scanning and treat cancer. We even perform hip replacements in dogs! However, while this is reassuring for pet owners, it’s no surprise that it can be very expensive. One way to decide whether you need pet insurance is to imagine that your pet is injured, or seriously ill, and consider how you might pay for the treatment. One of the most distressing situations is when a pet’s problem is treatable, but the cost of the treatment is more than the owner can afford, and the pet has to be put to sleep. Sadly, we see this often with cats that have been in road traffic accidents resulting in feline pelvic fractures, and veterinary fees in excess of £4,000.
Almost any pet can be insured – however, the cost of your pet insurance will depend upon factors such as age, medical history, breed (some breeds are predisposed to certain conditions), and even the area you live in. Choosing an insurance policy can be a confusing process, and your vet will be happy to advise you on what to look out for. For example, does the policy offer lifelong cover for illness? Some insurance companies will only offer cover for 12 months, which means that an illness is only covered during that policy year. This can be very frustrating with ongoing illnesses such as skin conditions, diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease. Also, check the policy limit (ie. how much the policy will pay out in one year). We would generally recommend yearly cover of at least £7,000 just in case your pet has a serious accident and/or illness. Leo, 5, helps hand key to community’s A Keynsham five-year-old has won a competition to name a new bus keeping residents on the move. Leo Watt was invited to see the unveiling of Keynsham and District Dial-a-Ride’s new 17-seater vehicle, which now proudly bears the name “Bumbo” on the front. Barratt Developments, which is building the new Bilbie Green site on the town’s southern edge, donated the bus – worth £31,000 – to the community and last month handed over the keys to the charity. Leo joined MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, Councillor Brian Simmons and Kirstie Brown from David Wilson Homes as the bus was presented to Diala-Ride. Kirstie said: “Being in the business of creating new
communities, we believe it’s important to support ‘local heroes’ in the areas we work. “Keynsham Dial-a-Ride is a fantastic example of such a community hero in Somerset, helping to get people from A to B who may struggle to do so otherwise. We wish them all the best with the new bus.” The Dial-a-Ride service is free to join and offers members a door-to-door service, enabling them to travel to appointments, to see friends and family, to attend social events, go to the shops and more. It covers Keynsham and Saltford as well as surrounding villages on certain days and sections of Stockwood and Whitchurch. Mr Simmons, member advocate for community transport at Bath and North East Somerset Council, and chairman

Rising demand for volunteers’ support A Keynsham-based team of volunteers who help people in times of crisis have seen a 23 per cent increase in call-outs in the first half of the year. The British Red Cross emergency response service, which is based at Hicks Gate fire station, had one of its busiest weekends yet last month, attending a “chemical incident” in central Bristol, a flood and a fire. On Friday, August 4, a volunteer crew had just completed a call-out and were returning the emergency response vehicle to Hicks Gate when they were deployed to the chemical incident in Gas Ferry Road, where residents had been evacuated from nearby flats. Bristol City Council had set up a community rest centre at Spike Island and 11 Red Cross volunteers were on the scene to help the residents. The team stayed at the rest
Red Cross emergency response service volunteer Lynne Davies centre until residents were allowed to return to their homes in the early hours of the morning. Among the volunteers was mum-of-two Lynne Davies, 44, from Severnside, who has been a Red Cross emergency response
volunteer since January. She said: “We are there to help in that moment of crisis. Often people are in a state of shock if they’ve experienced a house fire or flood so having someone there who can give a bit
of advice or just a cup of tea and a chat can be so helpful in trying to make sense of the chaos. “When we are supporting at a rest centre, like the one at Spike Island, people may have left their property in a hurry and forgotten to pick up important medication or they may be worried about their homes or friends or family. Our role is to provide practical help, such as arranging replacement medication, or giving emotional support to try to reassure them as much as possible.” This is the second time Lynne has supported at a rest centre since she started volunteering. In June, she travelled to London to help in the immediate aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire as part of a huge response by Red Cross volunteers from across the country. Lynne said: “I was deployed to the community assistance centre located close to the tower

in times of crisis the day after the incident. I worked a night shift and I was busy throughout the night registering people, offering emotional support to people who were desperately searching for family and loved ones, or just listening to people who wanted someone to talk to about what they’d seen to try to process what had happened. “While it was challenging at times, it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The Red Cross came together to help people facing a terrible crisis and I was proud to play my part.” During the chemical incident in Bristol, an emergency call came in from Avon Fire and Rescue asking the team to support their crews at a flood and volunteers Tim and Hazel Fletcher left the rest centre to help before returning to Spike Island. On the Sunday evening, volunteers Terence Jefferies and
Tim Cann went to the aid of the Fishponds community as the fire service tackled a major blaze in a flat. Jo Riches, emergency response officer at the Red Cross, said: “Responding to emergencies is at the heart of what the British Red Cross does here in the UK, but I’d still like to say an enormous thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly over the weekend. “Our call-out rate is certainly increasing, which is great because it shows that we are making a big difference to people in crisis. Cafe ‘to restore balance’, say shop owners The owners of a Temple Street shop say they want to “bring back the balance” to Keynsham and turn the property into a café. John and Philippa Paget, who own 20 to 44 Temple Street, have applied to Bath and North East Somerset Council for permission to change the use of the former Gamescene store at 20 Temple Street, and say a new tenant has already signed a lease agreement. They say they would like the premises to become a locally run café offering sandwiches, cakes and deli items after the closure of the Bath Bakery shop and café next door, which is now 73
Degrees Bicycle Shop. In their application, the Pagets say: “This would also bring back some of the history of the unit as historically it was The Three Horseshoes public house.” The café would open seven days a week and operate from 8am to 5pm, with permission also sought for late-night opening until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Consultation ended on August 28, with the plans winning the support of Keynsham Town Council. Bath and North East Somerset Council planners are due to make a decision later this month.
New councillor ‘honoured to serve ward’ A new councillor has taken his seat on Keynsham Town Council after winning 49 per cent of the vote in last month’s by-election. Liberal Democrat Dr Hal MacFie received 431 votes in Keynsham East against Melanie Hilton (Independent, 277 votes)
and Jonathan Wallcroft (Labour, 163 votes). Dr MacFie said: “I am delighted and honoured to serve the residents of Keynsham East. I wish to thank all those who voted for me and I will serve everyone in my ward to the best of my ability.”

SCAMP brings musical whodunnit to the

An amateur dramatics group in Saltford is following up last year’s award-winning production with the English amateur premiere of a hit West End show. SCAMP (Saltford Community Association Musical Productions) is the first amateur group to be granted the rights to perform the musical Murder Ballad following its professional run in London in December 2016. To meet the challenge of staging the show, SCAMP has moved the production from the group’s home at Saltford Hall to Bath’s Mission Theatre where it will open on Thursday, October 12, and run until Saturday, October 14. New bins arrive for fortnightly collections Households across the Keynsham and Saltford area will be receving their new wheelie bins at the end of this month ahead of the switch to fortnightly rubbish collections at the start of November. A leaflet from Bath and North East Somerset Council explaining the changes will be hitting doormats across the area from August 28 to help residents prepare for the new system. New wheelie bins or reusable bin bags will be delivered to homes from September 25 and
before November 6, when the fortnightly collections are due to begin. Recyclable waste, including food waste, will continue to be collected every week, while chargeable green waste collections will remain fortnightly. The council, which says the changes will help to keep streets cleaner, increase recycling and make the services more affordable, has included advice on how to sort recycling boxes to
make space in the new wheelie bins in its four-page leaflet and there is a new bin on display at the One Stop Shop at the Civic Centre in Keynsham. Residents can check which new rubbish container they have been allocated – either a 140-litre wheelie bin or a 140-litre resuable bag – by entering their address at www.bathnes.gov. uk/recycle or by calling Council Connect on 01225 39 40 00. People can apply for a larger bin via Council Connect if their
household includes two or more children in nappies, contains six or more people or when there is a medical need for one. A welcome pack will also be delivered with the new bins or bags, which will include more information about the new collections, a 2017-18 collection calendar and Christmas collection information. Echo Bridge has more than an echo of singer-songwriter Gavin’s hometown
A Keynsham singer-songwriter is releasing his latest album this month – and its name will be familiar to everyone in his hometown. Echo Bridge by Gavin Osborne will be available from September 1 and name-checking the bypass bridge isn’t the only reference to Keynsham. The album begins with a track called Starzecs, which tells the story of the Starzec family who set up a cobbler’s business in Keynsham after escaping from Germany to the UK in the late 1930s. The business can still be found in the High Street today, of course, and the song, with its references to “chocolate town”, the county bridge and more, delighted a crowded bar in the Ship Inn at its first public performance during Keynsham Music Festival. With Gavin’s mix
of wit and pathos with a little bite, the song is also a comment on the plight of immigrants at any period in history. The title track reminisces about a teenage love affair, including a rendezvous under Echo Bridge, while I Am A European is less personal and much more political. The album was recorded with Keynsham’s Johnny Hare over the early summer and during Gavin’s Australian tour, during which he performed a five-night stint at the Melbourne Festival of Comedy. It has a Bristol release preview at the Cube Cinema on Friday, September 8, with more to follow nationwide – details will be published on the Keynsham Music Festival Facebook page. Echo Bridge should be available from Longwell Records in September.

Show panto club your star quality Keynsham and Saltford residents are being urged to let their inner performer out at auditions for a classic pantomime. Saltford Panto Club is looking for people of all ages to join its production of Dick Whittington: Saviour of Old London Town, which will be staged from January 31 to February 4 next year. The group is looking for actors, singers and dancers aged from 10 and up as well as people to join the backstage crew, to support those on stage as a prompt and an assistant director. Auditions will be held at Saltford Hall on Sunday, September 10, from 2pm and Panto Club chair Louise Smee said no experience is necessary, just enthusiasm. She added: “Being on stage is great for developing confidence
and our experienced team will be there to coach you in dance, drama and singing skills until the performances. attended the Connecting Communities meeting in July to give a short presentation of the crime figures. In comparison to last year they looked very similar if you consider the population growth, new housing and the resulting additional residents. With the reduction in policing levels this is as good as we could have hoped for. We are still looking to get another member of staff in the office to help and I will update you on that as soon as I have some positive information. What a difference a year makes – the start of September brings the new Year 7s into our senior schools. This is a great time to remind you and them alike of their responsibilities as they progress though the education system.

During my patrol in the Memorial Park I have been approached by a few parents complaining about the behaviour

Broadlands celebrates ‘real breadth of success’ as students receive results Broadlands Academy is again celebrating a “fantastic” set of GCSE results. In a year that has seen new exam courses for many GCSEs and the introduction of the new grading system of 1 to 9, staff at the academy said they were delighted that a greater number of students than the national average achieved the new 9 grade (above an A* standard) in both English and maths. In addition, 10 per cent of students achieved more than eight GCSEs at a grade A or higher. Special congratulations were in order for Samuel Pollard, who achieved an incredible six A*s and three grade 9s – one of only 2,000 students in the country to do so. Meanwhile, Katherine Edgar earned six A*s and two grade 9s and sisters Kelsey and Kristina Lloyd achieved
an outstanding 18 As and A*s between them. Every student who studied Triple Science achieved above a C grade, with more than half achieving the highest grades of As and A*s. There was continued success in English, with more than three-quarters of students achieving or exceeding the new grade 4 benchmark. Success in the core subjects at Broadlands was matched with impressive achievements in subjects such as music. A challenging course nationally, more than 80 per cent achieved a C grade or above with 40 per cent of these at a grade A. James Hall, the principal at Broadlands Academy, said: “Congratulations to all the students and staff at Broadlands and I know everyone has worked extremely hard for these results.

Delight as pupils go on to ‘pursue their ambitions’ Every Year 13 student who applied for university had their places confirmed on A-level results day, Wellsway School announced. The 2017 students had all made significant progress from their Year 12 AS exams, in keeping with the sixthform’s tradition of excellent achievement, said the school. Sir Bernard Lovell Academy is celebrating hugely improved GCSE results this year. The proportion of students with a grade 4 or above in maths and English is up 15 percentage points on 2016 at 63 per cent – even though the new GCSEs are significantly more demanding. A level and GCSE results success STEMs from hard work by talented students Almost two-thirds of this year’s A-level students at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy achieved passes of A*-C with 30 per cent at A* or A. Based in Stoke Gifford, BTE Academy is a university technical college (UTC), which focuses on the so-called STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Over half (52 per cent) of all A-level grades at BTE Academy in maths or further maths were at A* or A while 76 per cent of grades in maths and science were A*-C, with a 100 per cent pass rate. Meanwhile 76 per cent of engineering grades were at Distinction* or Distinction, with 14 students achieving the maximum marks across all units. Individual successes included Harry Dyte from Kingswood, who earned an A* in biology,

A total of 32 Year 11 girls gained all A*/A grades, nearly half of whom (15) achieved straight A*s. Furthermore, 22 Year 10 girls took their maths IGCSE a year early with 86 per cent receiving the top A* grade and 100 per cent gaining A*/A. More STEM success came through biology, physics and chemistry where 58 per cent of all grades were at the top A* grade.

Hundreds triumph at sixth form centre Feelings of anticipation turned to triumph as more than 600 students at the area’s largest sixth form collected their A-level results last month. This year St Brendan’s Sixth Form College celebrated an A-level pass rate of 97 per cent, with 23 out of its 47 courses boasting a 100 per cent pass rate. The college moved many of its A levels to the new, more rigorous linear format this year and principal Michael Jaffrain said: “Our results are outstanding and highlight the brilliant quality in teaching at St Brendan’s. “Here at the college we have subject experts teaching our students and their hard work and dedication has transpired in our first set of linear results.” Among St Brendan’s star performers are Ana Marchant, above centre, and Mohammad Kordzanganeh, who are both
off to Oxford to study English language and literature and physics respectively. Among those taking up apprenticeships with top firms is Mason Bean, who is looking forward to starting on the Deloitte BrightStart programme for Financial Services. Meanwhile, straight-A student Tommy Matthews is taking two years out to train to be part of the England Olympic rock climbing team in 2020.

Academy closer to ‘outstanding’ goal
It is exciting times at Hanham Woods Academy as it continues to grow in both size and reputation, under the leadership of principal Steve Kneller, his strong leadership team and with the support of Cabot Learning Federation. A spokesperson said: “The renewed focus on academic excellence where students are both challenged and supported to achieve great things has resulted in students having new experiences and achieving in areas they did not think was possible. Professional guidance to help career choices has seen aspirations raised proving great preparation for our young people for their lives in the future. “The well established ‘House’ system encourages teamwork and leadership skills while providing greater resources to
support the most vulnerable young people especially around issues relating to mental health. “Cabot Learning Federation has provided leaders and aspiring leaders with professional development opportunities as well as investing financially to improve energy efficiency across the site and other significant projects. First results ‘place IKB on the map’ IKB Academy in Keynsham is celebrating a hugely successful first set of A-level results. The school is delighted that students have achieved highly in both the academic and vocational qualifications across the full range of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subject areas. IKB students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in all the A-level science subjects and a 100 per cent pass rate in the Level 3 Btec Engineering qualification, where almost 50 per cent of students gained a double Distinction * (equivalent to two A* grades at A level). A-level product design also saw a 100 per cent pass rate. A total of 79 per cent of students gained at least one top grade (A* or A or equivalent) and impressively 58 per cent gained at least two of these top grades. Principal Debbie Gibbs said: “These results firmly place IKB on the map as a learning institution where excellence in the areas of science, technology, engineering and maths can be achieved. “Most importantly these results give our students the opportunity to follow their dreams to study at university and on high quality apprenticeships. We have students leaving to study in the fields of aeronautical, motorsport, and design engineering as well as the more traditional subjects such

as mechanical engineering and economics. “Some of our most successful students have gained places on the most competitive higher and degree apprenticeships in areas of engineering, computing and finance. “This has been our first group of students and we will miss them, but know that the results they have gained at IKB along with their work placement experiences have secured them fantastic university places, apprenticeships and jobs and will equip them well for the next stage of their lives. We wish them all the very best of luck.” The following week there was more to celebrate as IKB received its first set of GCSE results, revealing a 100 per cent pass rate in all GCSEs and Btecs. All students gained at least one grade at a B or above in their GCSEs and Btecs and 67 per cent of students achieved at least one A grade or above. Initial figures also give IKB a positive Progress 8 result – the way the Government compares schools’ performances. Principal Debbie Gibbs said: “You only get results like this from excellent teaching, motivated students and supportive parents, something we are proud of here at IKB.” There are still places available in the sixth form at IKB, so students and families are invited to contact the school or drop in to discuss option choices.

n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS
A wild week – whatever the weather! “Never let the weather stop the adventure” – a very fitting motto for the Scouts of 1st Keynsham who spent a whole week in the Cotswolds under canvas. The first night saw the heavens open even before any tents were up, save a catering tent. Being Scouts, they simply found a dry spot and, despite a stream running through it due to a blocked rainwater gulley, made a raised bed using tables on which to spend the night. Let the adventure begin! Day Two Tents erected, fires burning, breakfast cooked and then the arrival of the older Cubs who are due to become Scouts soon – bring on the archery, air rifles and fencing, plus a little car mechanics. Day Three Bring on the sunshine, pioneering challenges, kiln building, bouldering, crafts and, of course, cooking on fires. On the menu today was paella. Day Four saw the Cubs up
before 6am, poking the fire and getting it going to provide some warmth – did they become Scouts overnight? Rabbits were prepared for the pot and cooked backwoods style. Talking of pots, the kiln magically appeared and before long the Scouts were making their own pots and then pizzas! Days Five and Six Take a map, a tent, some food, spare clothes,

pack it all in a rucksack and away we go to try to find a campsite miles away. No adults – just us! The older Scouts achieved their Chief Scouts Gold Challenge hike, camping overnight. Day Seven A mystery day out which found us high roping, paddle boarding, kayaking and really being challenged – the “Leap of Faith” was probably the scariest moment.
Day Eight Time to pack up, and catch the train home. At times it may have rained and the sun may have shone but one thing is for sure: adventure never stopped at this year’s summer camp whatever the weather. As one Scout posted: “I can’t believe how amazing the week was and a massive thank you to everyone!” Thanks – I wonder what next year will bring.

Keynsham Explorer Scouts trekked into the mountainous terrain in north Norway
Explorers chill out in the Arctic Keynsham Explorer Scout unit were once again off on their adventures and summer 2017 has seen them venturing to the north of Norway into the Arctic Circle. When you think of the Arctic Circle you might think of freezing temperatures and dark nights – well, our group of intrepid explorers found things a little different. Average daytime temperature was 22 degrees and it never seemed to get dark. They set off on a three-day trek into the wilderness late in the afternoon and didn’t stop walking until midnight, when it seemed like an early September evening. Some leaders even resorted to blindfolds to help block out the light! This expedition truly was Adventure with a capital “A”. Carrying tents and all personal items for two weeks, the Explorer Scouts flew to Bodo and then hiked off into the mountainous
terrain using DNT huts as a marker. They cooked their own food, which they purchased locally as they went. A visit to the Artic Centre meant that next stop could only be Svalbard to the north and the North Pole, Russia a few miles to the east and slightly south was Sweden. Not content with seeing the mountains and glaciers from a distance, the unit went white water rafting over the border in Sweden, glacier walking near Bodo, paddle boarding for 14km on a river into Trondheim and even swimming in a lake that had ice at the edges. They even found time for a little sightseeing and shopping, although things were expensive. KESU demonstrated with this expedition what it is to challenge yourself, be prepared to do things that you have never done and how with teamwork and friendship you can really

Much-loved Moomins join festival at Space Youngsters in Keynsham are invited on a magical journey into Moominvalley when the Bath Children’s Literature Festival comes to town next month. The popular characters from the Moomins will be visiting The Space for two special shows on Saturday, October 7, as part of the annual celebration of writing for young people. The interactive play is performed against an ingenious pop-up book backdrop, features original music and puppetry and is described as “unique participatory storytelling”. Fete a golden opportunity to get together A Keynsham homecare provider invited clients, families and members of the public to join them at their sunny summer fete last month. Goldcare Professionals hosted the event in the courtyard outside their Temple Court premises on August 22, providing music, refreshments, a raffle – and plenty of homemade cake, to go with a glass of prosecco. As well as a chance for Keynsham residents to socialise, the event was also organised in support of the Alzheimer’s Society. Goldcare owner Julie Michalak’s friend Sharon Lock had previously held a dressdown day and cake sale at work at iTec in Whitchurch, raising £300. Added to proceeds from the summer fete, Goldcare Professionals has now donated just under £700 to the Alzheimer’s Society. A donation of £50 towards the total came from the team at

LETTERS Record turnout for legion cream teas On behalf of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section, Keynsham Branch, I would like to thank all those who braved the terrible weather to support our cream tea afternoon on Wednesday, August 9. We were certainly kept on our toes all afternoon with a record turnout and managed to raise £442.48 for the Poppy Appeal. A big thank you also to Tesco Keynsham, which donated items for use during the event, Total Produce of Bristol for the beautiful fruit basket used as a raffle prize, the Baker’s Corner, Kingswood, which made the delicious scones, and last but not least Keynshamvoice for advertising the event. No direct links for growing population How thrilled I was to hear that Bath and North East Somerset Council jointly with Bristol City Council have been awarded £5 million for road improvements up to and through Keynsham Bypass. This will make it so much better for the X39 bus to get from Bristol to Bath – while leaving the ever-increasing population of Keynsham and its newly installed central bus stops with no direct link through the town from Bristol to Bath and Bath to Bristol, especially in the evenings. Not everyone works from nine till five. I would hope that Bath and North East Somerset Council is standing up for its council tax payers on this issue! Linda Shipp Keynsham resident

n NEWS Council warns over iTunes voucher scam People are being warned to beware of fraudsters demanding payments in the form of iTunes vouchers, after a woman in Bath was conned out of £500. Bath and North East Somerset Council is highlighting the latest scam in which the victim receives a phone call and is panicked into making a payment for a fake bill or other services by purchasing iTunes gift cards from the nearest retailer. The caller then asks for the 16-digit codes on the vouchers, which can then be easily redeemed by the scammers. Councillor Bob Goodman said: “iTunes Gift Cards can only be used to purchase goods and services on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store or for an Apple Music membership. Group has anniversaries down to fine art By Ros Anstey Compton Dando Art Group has celebrated its 12th birthday. The group meets regularly to learn new skills at demonstrations by guest artists and celebrated the anniversary with a birthday lunch at the Compton Inn. Speaking at the celebration, organiser Sonia Priest said the aim was inspire members with visiting artists who paint varied subjects in a range of mediums. Recent guest artist Tim Wilmot’s demonstration went down a treat with the group, said Mrs Priest. She added: “Tim specialises in vibrant watercolours, exploiting the medium with tone and light, and gave a very inspiring demonstration. He had thought it would be nice to paint outside the village hall, but English weather is not predictable and I suggested maybe inside would be more practical. “He photographed the Compton Inn and the road beyond, then proceeded with a pencil drawing, followed by a painting. “He is a loose painter, in the style of Edward Wesson. He was interesting and I am sure inspired the group with his work.” The next open demo is taking place on Wednesday, September 25, at Compton Dando village hall with guest artist Tony Hogan. Mrs Priest said: “Tony is based in Cornwall and he will be painting a coastal scene in acrylics. Tony is a well known
artist and he runs painting holidays. He has a very relaxed way of teaching and his paintings of Cornwall are inspiring, showing the beautiful Cornish coast and countryside.” Doors will open at 9.45am for a 10am start. The common cold and flu are easily confused as they share similar symptoms such as sore throat and a runny nose. general aches and pains. These can last up to two weeks and sadly sometimes, in more serious illnesses resulting in hospital admissions such as bronchitis and pneumonia. In the UK, up to 10,000 deaths yearly particularly amongst those with existing medical conditions are attributable to flu. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Recent society visits
Members of the society have enjoyed visits to several places of interest recently. On a hot day in early July the destination was Bristol docks, where society member and M Shed volunteer Alan Salter had arranged a range of experiences for those with a head for heights and liking for boat rides. The group were lifted to the cab of one of the dockside cranes, where Alan demonstrated his crane-driving skills, had a cruise down to the Cumberland Basin on the old fire-boat Pyronaut, which showed the range of its jets for us, and finally were given a fascinating tour of the storage areas of the M Shed museum. This holds a vast stock of artefacts large and small relating to domestic and industrial life in Bristol over the last 200 years. A fortnight later, by way of a complete contrast, the society was able to arrange a tour of Badminton House, home of the Dukes of Beaufort. With a most knowledgeable guide, we visited many of the grand rooms of the house, including the hall where the game of badminton was first devised and played. The group also saw the south gardens and a very good afternoon was rounded off with tea.

Today we are used to manufacturing and production being concentrated in large and efficient plants, but a century ago this was not the case. An example is the manufacture of gas. Keynsham had its own gas company with the works on Dapps Hill, below the then workhouse.

right entrepreneur; in Keynsham this happened in 1857 when the Keynsham Gas Company Ltd was incorporated.
The gas works were brought into use on January 16 the following year and “the streets and shops were beautifully illuminated".

The council paid the company to provide the street lighting and levied a “lighting rate” to raise the income. By 1891 the town had 51 street lamps, some of which still exist in the Dapps Hill area. Shortly afterwards, in 1892, all the street lighting was converted to electric power, but demand for gas for heating and lighting in private houses continued to grow. In 1921 the Keynsham Gas Company raised funds for the reconstruction of the plant, mains, services and meters, but its days were numbered. The coming of the new Fry’s factory in 1923 required
the supply of far more gas than could ever be supplied from the Keynsham site so a new main was laid from Bristol and the Bristol Gas Company bought out the local concern in 1928, closing it soon afterwards. There are few photographs that show the two Keynsham gasholders, perhaps the most distinctive structure of any Victorian gas works, but they can be seen on the left of the image above. In the centre is the manager’s house and to the right is the retort house. The chimney from the furnace that burned the coal can be seen behind.

n NEWS Pub quizzers present charity with £600 gift By Ros Anstey A charity that supports people living with Parkinson’s across Bath, Keynsham and beyond has received a welcome gift from local pub quiz teams. Money raised from the Compton Inn’s monthly quiz nights was added to quiz team member Rachael Daubney’s personal fundraising total to make a donation of £600 for Parkinson’s UK Bath and District Branch. John Saunders, the branch’s vice chairman, said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Rachael Daubney and the Compton Inn quiz team for their wonderful donation of £600. “This money will go to helping our members and their carers make their lives a little happier with coffee mornings, cream teas, pub lunches and day trips. “This gives them a good support group, full of information and guidance. “It is lovely hearing them
supporting each other and hearing laughter. “The Parkinson’s UK Bath and District branch runs seven coffee mornings at Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Keynsham, Shepton Mallet, Paulton, Frome and Gurney Slade. “We also run weekly indoor bowls at Paulton, weekly exercises at Frome Medical Centre plus fortnightly classes in Bath and monthly classes at Odd Down. “As you can see we could not run all this without people like the wonderful people of Compton Dando.” The pub’s quiz nights have benefited a number of good causes and Sharon Silver, from the Compton Inn, said: “Our quiz nights are very popular, and last year we raised £2,500.” If anyone would like to find out more about local Parkinson’s UK support groups, contact Mr Saunders on 01761 432452.

Let experts value hidden treasures
Keynsham residents are invited to bring any hidden treasures for expert valuation at the Roman Baths next month. Bonhams is donating all valuation fees raised on Monday, October 2, to the Archway Project, which aims to convert Victorian buildings in the city into a new Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre. People living across the area can bring smaller items such as antiques, jewellery, watches and pictures to be valued on the day. For larger items, visitors can bring an image to show the experts. Valuation charges will be £3 for the first item and £1 for each subsequent item up to a maximum of five. Patrick Toynbee, from Bonhams, said: “We are delighted to support the Roman Baths Foundation and the
Archway Project by raising funds through a valuation day. “We look forward to meeting new customers and there’s always the chance of exciting new discoveries, from ancient Chinese jades through to modern paintings; one can never tell what will appear on the day.” The valuation day will run from 10am to 2pm and no appointment is necessary. The Archway Project will provide two new learning spaces above the former spa laundry in Swallow Street and will be connected to the Roman Baths by an undercroft that passes through Roman remains beneath York Street. Bristol hospital is a site for sore eyes
It is estimated that over 3,000 people in Bristol are living with cataracts. Cataract is a condition that occurs when the lens of the eye changes and becomes less transparent, subsequently causing blurred vision for those experiencing it. The condition, which is 95 per cent age-related, is reported to affect 30 per cent of people 65 years or older. We often take for granted the clarity in which we experience life’s special moments; a grandchild’s first birthday, a daughter’s graduation or even just fully viewing the artistic wonders that nature provides. The speed at which the severity of blurred vision increases varies from individual to individual and unfortunately there are no medications, eye drops, or dietary supplements that have been proven to reverse cataracts.” Traditionally people with
cataracts are required to wait until they have significant sight loss before any treatment starts. This can significantly impact on their daily lives. The introduction of a private cataract service at Spire Bristol Hospital now gives patients with cataracts the option to seek eye care at any stage. “With some of the new and most advanced technology available at the Spire, we can advise on many treatment options. We will also be able to offer some of the most advanced lenses available today, including Premium corrective lenses to correct distance, astigmatic and reading vision. If immediate treatment isn’t deemed necessary
or a patient would like to wait before having surgery, there are some additional measures that may also be helpful. OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome
I
t's been a busy month for the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome group, with two walks of varying difficulty level available. The first, on Sunday, August 6, for the serious walker was the 10-mile circular walk around Kelston Roundhill, starting and finishing in Keynsham. With ideal conditions, 13 hardy souls set off from the Memorial Park cafe, heading along the River Avon, picking up a couple more walkers at Swineford. We took the easiest of the three options, via North Stoke, with just a steady climb to the top. We were blessed with superb views of all the surrounding countryside, before heading down through Kelston itself, and on to the Bird in Hand. Because of the lovely weather, we stayed longer than intended, in what turned out to be a very social refreshment stop, helped by the good service from the staff. We walked the last three miles at an easy pace, arriving

The second walk of the month, on August 20, was a much more leisurely affair. Because of the clay pigeon shoot in the valley, this walk around the Stockwood Vale had to be re-routed, which resulted, unfortunately, in more road walking than intended. Almost 20 walkers took part in this
gentle stroll, most stopping for welcoming refreshments at the Memorial Park cafe at the finish.

n NEWS A group of teenagers have been hailed a “true inspiration” after organising a summer fete for the members of a local charity and raising hundreds of pounds in the process. Keynsham and District Mencap Society 18+ Club and Juniors Club volunteer Molly Hale, 16, and fellow student volunteers made the most of their summer break, rallying local businesses to support the event and arranging entertainment and activities. The fete, held at Scout HQ in Ashton Way on August 5, included a raffle and tombola with prizes donated by a range of local firms, music from society ambassador and resident DJ Barry Hollyman, a range of stalls and an array of homemade cakes, raising £500 for the society’s activities and clubs. Mencap fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “Molly and her friends demonstrated hard work and dedication with the organising of this fete. We are completely self-funded, therefore we do rely heavily on the backing of our supporters whether it’s local businesses, volunteers, staff and members and their families. The enthusiasm of everyone involved bolsters the fact that what we are doing for the community is supported.” Keynsham Mencap chair Lisa O’Brien added: “A massive thank

At a time when young people are so frequently demonised for their behaviour, it was fantastic to see so many give their time and energy to raise over £500 for the society.” Molly, who sat her GCSEs before the summer break, is a keen fundraiser, having taken part in sponsored runs for Cancer Research UK, for a local child with additional needs and table top sales for the children’s ward at the RUH. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction
The Dry by Jane Harper This book has been Waterstones’ Book of the Month, recommended by Simon Mayo of Radio 2’s Book Club and shortlisted for CWA Gold Dagger Award 2017 and I can see why. Set in Australia it begins with a question – who really killed the Hadler family? Tensions in a small town in Australia, outside of Melbourne, are high following the murder of three members of the Hadler family. Everyone thinks it was the father, Luke Hadler, who committed suicide after murdering his wife and young son. At the funeral, a Melbourne policeman, Aaron Falk, has reluctantly attended. He is a local boy, best friends with Luke but left 20 years ago under a dark cloud. Araon is slowly drawn into investigating the murder, which draws him back to the secret of why he had to leave town. As questions mount and suspicion spreads, Falk is forced to confront his past, one which Luke’s death threatens to reveal. Against this tension there is the unbearable drought that has hit the region. You can feel the heat and discomfort caused by the weather as you read the story. The drought has affected this farming community severely and you can feel the tension throughout. This is Jane Harper’s first novel and it makes an interesting change for it to be set in Australia instead of a dark Scandi crime story. A highly recommended read.

Gilgamesh: A new English version by Stephen Mitchell, as reviewed by Emilie Bioud,
Keynsham Library Assistant At the British Museum there is a fascinating room (number 6) where you will find the collection from ancient Assyria (today’s Northern Iraq). The entrance of the room is flanked by two colossal winged human-headed lions, quite an impressive sight. As you continue your visit, you will come across some stone sculptures and reliefs that depict gods, ceremonies and hunting scenes from a long-lost civilisation. When archaeologists found the city in the 19th century and the palace of Ashurbanipal, they also found his library and brought back a lot of clay tablets written in cuneiform. Those tablets are kept hidden in the museum, not displayed for the visitor to enjoy. Translated many years after their discovery, they revealed the legend of Gilgamesh in an Akkadian poem, considered the first great work of literature. Gilgamesh is a king and demigod the size of a giant, who despitically rules over the city of Uruk. The gods will send him a man, Enkidu, who is his opposite in every way to complete him and challenge him before becoming his friend. To become a hero and a wise king Gilgamesh goes on an adventure to kill monsters and bring honour and pride to his city. He will go to the end of the world to find about eternal life, and will meet Utnapishtim, who will tell him the story of the Great Flood. The legend is very refreshing and full of good spirit. We learn about gods long ago forgotten, we imagine the city of Uruk and its gardens and we discover a great civilisation.
The version by Stephen Mitchell is a light one, easy and accessible for a modern reader. I strongly recommend people to not read the book’s introduction before reading the text, as it spoiled it. It’s better reading it after as a good analysis of the tale.
Adult Audio Book
Keynsham Library has taken delivery of some new adult audio books. One of these is: The 12.30 From Croydon by Freeman Wills Croft Read by Gordan Griffin, this is an enjoyable crime caper which begins with a body. Andrew Crowther, a retired businessman, is found dead on the 12.30 flight from Croydon to Paris. Then the story moves to the murderer’s point of view. We follow the killer at every stage, from the planning to the execution and having to deal with the elusive Inspector French. Taking the plot forward from the murderer’s point of view makes for a gripping story of betrayal, obsession and selfdelusion. Will the killer get away with murder? Keynsham Library’s Summer Reading Challenge The Summer Reading challenge continues until September 11. This year’s challenge is about Animal Agents – read the books, catch the crooks! To help the Animal Agents, you will need to read at least six library books. You will be given a folder and every time you visit, you will get a set of stickers. Once all stickers are collected you will be able to crack
the case and catch the crook. Remember, you can read all sorts of books for the challenge.

Hansel and Gretel by Michael Morpurgo From the great children’s author comes his brilliant adaptation of the classic fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. Be entranced by the story of two children who are forced into the woods, encounter a “warty old witch”, a wolf and a strange gingerbread house and see if they all live happily ever after. The book is beautifully illustrated and is a perfect read to enjoy by yourself or for reading with someone, curled up eating gingerbread!

Researchers call on ‘Children of 90s’ Researchers at the University of Bristol are calling on 24to 26-year-olds living in the Keynsham area to take part in one of the most detailed health studies of its kind in the world. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (also known as Children of the 90s) is an internationally renowned study, following the health and development of more than 14,000 families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992. Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity and dementia. Amy from Hanham is one of almost 4,000 young people who have already attended the most recent data collection
clinic, Focus@24+, and taken part in a series of cutting-edge tests, including blood pressure, liver and lung function checks. She said is proud to be a Child of the 90s, adding: “It’s incredible to be a part of something that’s achieved so much in my lifetime alone. The research discoveries have been phenomenal.” Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone living in the Keynsham area who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation. Apes’ character-driven third outing a heartbreaker War For The Planet of The Apes (12A) irector Matt Reeves does it again, once again breaking audiences’ hearts with a film about giant talking apes. Andy Serkis returns for his third outing as the highly intelligent ape Caesar, who has grown old and withered since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). The motion capture on display here is nothing short of revolutionary with even the most minuscule of facial expressions clearly visible on Serkis’ face causing every emotion to come across as naturally as they would on a human’s face. Many, including myself, believe that this example is sure to win Serkis the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. However, what elevates this is Serkis’ performance, which is brilliant in every scene fantastically conveying how far the character has come since his debut.

Do not let the title mislead you, as this film is not an action film; it is a character study. Most of the film focuses solely on the character of Caesar, which helps draw the audience into the tense and desperate situation that the apes find themselves in as well as the especially emotional ending. The cinematography by Michael Seresin also deserves major praise as it is one gorgeous shot after another from beautiful, wide landscape shots to focused and fluid action sequences. Michael Giacchino once again provides a mesmerising score for the film with each note tugging on

the audience’s heart strings as well as exciting them during an action sequence. However, Weta Digital – the company behind the animation – must not be understated as without their talent this film’s breathtaking visuals would never have been able to be realised to their full extent. A grey and slightly drizzly evening in August saw a good few members of Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust, along with families and other visitors, at the home of our vice chair Philippa Paget – Elm Farm in Burnet – for a fascinating bat-orientated evening, writes secretary Kathy Farrell. Elm Farm has recorded 10 different bat species. Natterer’s bats move around the farm buildings during the year and have a maternity roost in an old stone barn. In June they have their babies (pups) there, after returning from hibernation in April. In August the bats, either mothers after having their pups or the young ones born this summer, are building up their strength. During September and October they are not so conspicuous as they prepare for hibernation.

its barns have become a B&B for bats! space depending on the species. A building that has bats in will probably have some spiders in it too as bats eat spiders. That is good news for some people! Philippa showed us signs of bats’ presence to look for – you may see what appear to be mouse droppings, but are in fact bat droppings. Other tell-tale signs are moth wings, particularly the orange and black wings of a nice big, juicy large yellow underwing moth, as brown long-eared bats eat them and drop the wings on the ground. We then headed out across the fields to see where the bats would be feeding during the night. The farm is managed to provide somewhere for the bats to live – in the barns, on and in the walls and roof of the house and buildings, in bat boxes on trees and in old trees with cracks and hollows left for them. They also need an insect-rich habitat to feed. The hedges, other than those on the roadside that have to be cut for safety, are cut no more than every three years to allow the insect life to develop, and likewise the grass fields are grazed by cattle through the year, but not in winter when overwintering insects are living underground. The bat food chain starts with plants, and management of parts of the farm where crops are grown just for insects is very important. Field margins are also left so insects can complete their life cycle, providing plenty of food for bats and birds. And this rich environment also benefits
Philippa Paget gives a bat briefing outside a stone building where bats roost other animals – during our evening walk we were lucky to see two hares lolloping through the margins and a roe deer in the grass. On the way back to the farmyard, bat detectors were handed out – these lower the bats’ high-pitched ultra-sound to a level that can be heard and the frequency and rhythm can help identify them. As they catch their prey of night-flying moths, gnats and other insects the sound changes. We all soon got the hang of using them – the first creature’s sound we picked up was not a bat but a grasshopper! Then soon after the bats began to fly. At dusk the first bats began to
fly in and around a big open barn in the farmyard. As it wasn’t yet dark, we could see them as they swooped and dived very close to us. They seem to know that we can’t see them very well and are happy to come within a few feet. We heard five different species (not a bad total considering the weather and possible shortage of insect food for the bats) – common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, natterer’s, brown long-eared and the short burst of a serotine bat as it flew high over us. A successful evening, thanks to our host Philippa. The delight and enthusiasm of the children when they could actually see the bats flying around will live with us.
We continue with a “batty” theme with our first evening meeting of the the autumn season in October – “Bats in the Belfry”. More of that next month. We do have two outings to look forward to before then. The first is a trip to Bristol Downs with expert Richard Bland for “Summer into Autumn Trees” on Saturday, September 9. n NEWS Fundraiser hosts coffee for a cause by Ros Anstey A Keynsham resident recently opened the doors of her home to fellow fundraisers to enjoy a coffee for a good cause. Marilyn Martin, a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Chelwood Bridge, offered to hold a coffee morning at her home, raising £150 for the RUH’s Forever Friends Appeal. Club president Heather Curtis said: “Thank you so much to Marilyn for hosting today’s coffee morning. It was enjoyable. “Thanks also go to everyone who provided such lovely cakes and those who brought items for the bring-and-buy stall. It was a lovely morning.” The Forever Friends Appeal has been chosen by Heather as the club’s charity during her year as president, and she said: “I have chosen Forever Friends because of the wonderful treatment I received in the RUH when I was ill.”

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Ken Plant, reader at St Mary’s Church, Saltford
Y
esterday (as I write this) I was talking with a friend whose 30-year-old daughter has just published a self-help book. In it she suggests that if we pay attention to the things we so often take for granted, we will appreciate them more and that gratitude changes how we feel, making us happier people. Coincidentally, the same day another friend gave me a small article to read which was highlighting the dangers of trying to please other people – in other words, allowing other people’s expectations of us to control us and so change the way we live our lives. We all know that we play different roles in different parts of our lives: obedient child, dutiful child,

By all means let us be willing to look at self-help books, but realise that we can’t make ourselves ‘better people’
caring partner, parent, manager, employee etc etc – but we know that that’s not all that we are. We must indeed beware of becoming (as well as behaving like) the people others think we should be, or want us to be. This maybe explains why there are so many self-help books on the market today and maybe also suggests that people are dissatisfied with life as they are living it. Some such books aim at self-improvement, in the sense of becoming more successful or influential. However, we all know they can’t make us better people. We can’t “pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps”, as the saying goes. We need help from outside. Other books aim to discover who we really are by peeling back the various layers of the ways we
think of ourselves, which we have adopted to please other people. Now, I must say that as a Christian, I find this very interesting. The Christian understanding is that we are all made in the image of God. Each one of us is able to reflect some tiny facet of the Divine, if we allow it to happen. Most of us will admit that we can all too often damage, distort, or even cover up that image! So, by all means let us be willing to look at self-help books, but realise that we can’t make ourselves “better people”. To do that, we need the help of the One who gives us life and holds us in existence. Also, when we discover our true selves, we shall find that each of us is unique, special and precious to God. Surely that is the true grounds of our dignity as human beings.
Church to host an ‘audience with Alan’ A Keynsham church is hosting an “Audience With”-style evening featuring a resident who has served the town as a councillor for a decade, as well as heading up a number of local charities. Keynsham Baptist Church, in the High Street, has invited Alan Hale to share stories from his many roles in public life to mark the end of his year as Bath and North East Somerset Council chairman. As well as reminiscing about his ten years as a councillor, Mr Hale will also delve into his 31 years as a police officer, during which he was commended for bravery twice. He will also discuss his 36 years as a member of Keynsham Lions and his more recent leadership roles with Keynsham Foodbank and Keynsham Dementia Action Alliance. The free event, which is open to all, will take place on September 5, with tea and coffee from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Bowlers battle it out for memorial cup
While club members have been busy competing against other clubs and also in the internal competitions, the green in Keynsham Park has been also used for non-club matches, writes our correspondent. One of the Sundays in the month drew bigger than usual crowds, when in the morning Norwest beat Yatton in one of the semi-finals for the Wedmore Plate and in the afternoon Bath beat Willmott Green in a Turnbull Cup semi-final. Somerset hosted Berkshire in a county match with the visitors returning home as the victors. Another Sunday the green was occupied by 56 club members competing in 14 teams for the Tom Pells Cup, a trophy presented in memory of Tom by his widow Lyn, who still plays regularly at Keynsham. The winning team of Mike Barrow, Ann Mollard, Lily Springer and Pete Gibson was presented with the trophy by Lyn and Tom’s granddaughter, Jessica. An annual match occurs each year for the Alsop Shield between Keynsham and Frys. This year it was hosted by Frys and Keynsham emerged as narrow winners by 77-73 shots. Keynsham played against Willmott Park at home in the semi-finals of the Bristol Triples League. With only three ends to play Keynsham had a comfortable nine-shot lead but somehow managed to lose 55-53. A highlight of the season is always the annual fixture between the ladies and the men. This was played on seven rinks – the fact that Keynsham was able to field

The gents won narrowly – the ladies captain asked me to say that – and then everyone was served with a tea of the highest standard prepared entirely by the men. One of the Monday night roll-ups concluded with a “bangers and burgers” barbecue prepared by the club’s Social Committee.

Four friendly wins

Following their pre-season buildup in which Keynsham Town Ladies won four and drew one out of their five friendlies against Poole Town, Abergavenny, Solihull Moors, Denham United and Cardiff City, the club is looking forward with confidence to the upcoming 2017-18 season, writes our correspondent. The club was formed in 1993 under the name of Super Striker Girls, as an under-11 six-a-side team by the pupils of Chandag Junior School. Five years later, they became established and linked up with Keynsham Town FC. The club entered a senior ladies’ team in the South West Women’s Football League Division Two for the first time. The team progressed through the league, winning three promotions and attracting players from Bristol and Bath Universities. More recently, they have reached the Women’s FA Cup
Third Round proper, and did so again last season when they lost at home to Women’s Super League club Durham in front of a sizeable attendance. They currently compete in the FA Women’s Premier League South West Division but strive to return to the Southern Division, from which they were relegated three seasons ago. The Southern (and Northern) Division is one tier below the Women’s Super League. Their main rivals for the one promotion place are Southampton and Plymouth Argyle. Keynsham Town Ladies can boast two former internationals in their squad – Justine Lorton (England) and Andreea Alexandru (Romania) – plus a number of ex-Yeovil Town Super League players. Star signing of the close season is striker Kerry Bartlett from Cardiff City, who is responsible for 15 of their 28 pre-season goals.

Frys bowlers chase league second place
Petanque trio cruise to victory at Ship
Frys Bowling Club travelled to Long Ashton on August 18 hoping to continue on from their win against Henleaze B the week before. The game didn’t start in a great way, however, with Frys falling behind. But this didn’t deter Frys and they soon pushed on and took the lead. As the end game drew nearer, Long Ashton put in strong showing, pulling all rinks back. Long Ashton went on to win the game 51-42, leaving Frys with two points from the game, and 10 points off second place in the Bristol and District Bowls League with one game remaining. Previous weeks saw Frys win 47-44 against Avonmouth and losing to Ardagh 78-27 in league matches, while in the Wedmore Plate Frys were knocked out by Norwest 90-58. On August 4, there was also a tight game with Keynsham in the annual Alsop Shield match, with Keynsham eventually taking the win at Somerdale 77-73.
The eagerly awaited Ship Inn Pétanque Masters competition was held on Sunday, August 13, writes our correspondent. Fine weather, exciting competition and a perfect location to the rear of the Ship Inn in Temple Street, overlooking Keynsham Park, made for a very enjoyable day for the 16 teams from around our area. After a day of intense, but very good humoured competition the eventual winner of the Bristol Blue Glass trophy was the team from the Old Inn, Congresbury – Kevin Mildon, Robin Mildon and Scott Flower. Runner-up was the Codrington Arms team of Clive de Silva, Mike Mathias and Alan Mcinnes. The Plate Competition winner was Boules at the Bull from Malmesbury. Badgers bring home trophy for first time The Bristol Badgers are the 2017 South West Baseball League (SWBL) Champions, writes our correspondent. They overcame Southern Conference Champions the Exeter Spitfires 9-3 at Somerdale Pavilion on August 13 to claim the title for the first time in the club’s history. Manager and MVP Tom Hollies pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits while striking out 10 Spitfires. He also drove in outfielder Vilmantas Katinas in the third inning to get the first Badger run on the board and registered three RBIs. The Badgers broke open a tight game in the fourth inning with five runs. Rhodri Theaker got things started by reaching first base on a Spitfires error before he and his brother Rhian scored. Hollies then drove in two runs
before Nils Eliasson drove him in with a single. Defensively the Badgers were perfect, catching all outfield fly balls and making crucial infield outs to strangle the Spitfires’ offense at source. “This was by far and away the best team performance of the season with every player making crucial contributions when it mattered,” said Hollies. “Every single player on the Badgers roster deserves credit for the way they played during the season and we are delighted that we brought the trophy home to Bristol for the first time ever.” Bristol Baseball Club is now preparing for its annual awards evening on September 16 at Somerdale Pavilion, and with the Bristol Bats finishing second to the Badgers in the Northern Conference, it promises to be a celebratory evening.
