Drivers 'lack awareness of 20mph speed limit'

We take our lives in our hands at estate's exit by Keri Beckingham A RESIDENT has told Keynsham Voice that he is concerned that people are taking their lives in their hands every time they leave the Park Homes Rockhill Estate on the Wellsway. Concerns over the safety of the Wellsway have been previously reported, following a spate of vehicles mounting pavements and near-misses. Resident Gemma Mitchell and her neighbours first spoke to Keynsham Voice in August 2017, and again in February this year, following a series of incidents outside their homes near the junction with Bath Hill. These included speeding cars, being clipped by wing mirrors, one driver crashing into a garden wall and another hitting a telegraph pole as they lost control on the corner. Now, Andy Cockle – a Turn to Page 2

retired police officer who lives on the Rockhill estate with his wife – has told the Voice that he is concerned that a lack of awareness of the speed limit on the Wellsway and poor visibility when leaving the estate is an accident waiting to happen. He said: “As soon as we moved here 18 months ago, I had concerns about coming out of the estate, and so I spoke to the owner of the property and mirrors were put up as a result. “However, these were then broken due to vandalism, and because of the design of the road you have to put your nose out just to see what’s coming. “Every time someone pulls out they literally have to take their life in their hands, and I’m not exaggerating. “The actual speed limit of the road is 20mph, and the fundamental issue is that no one abides by 20mph. “Nowadays a lot of people follow their sat navs and I have asked several people who all say that their sat navs show that the speed limit of the road is 30mph, which is incorrect. “I always have people flashing me and tailgating when I’m doing 20mph, because they are simply following what their sat nav says and not actually looking at the signs. “About three months ago I was asked to form a residents association for the Rockhill Estate, and following a meeting I was approached by four or five people who said they are physically scared to leave the

entrance of the site by car or foot, because of the speed that people come along. “When you come around the bend by the cricket club, you do not see the entrance to the Rockhill estate, and this is made worse by the fact that most people are speeding. “I’ve seen people accelerate round the bend where it opens up, and I’ve also seen people go by at 50 to 60mph, totally disregarding the signage. “My main concern is that we have some elderly people on site who are scared to walk out and cross the road, especially as there is no footpath. “I’ve contacted Bath and North East Somerset Council to ask about them installing more signage and flashing warnings to make more people aware of the speed limit, but I haven’t had a response. “I know all councils have issues with money, as I’ve worked in the system, but my major issue is that I don’t want to be sat here in a few months time saying I told you so.” Mr Cockle also told the Voice that he has spoken to Hal Macfie, Lib Dem councillor for Keynsham East, regarding a petition for more signage to be installed. Mr McFie commented: “The residents are absolutely right to raise this. As a pedestrian leaving the site, I found I had to cross over the road to get to a footpath, as there is none on the Rockhill side of the road, and it is a blind bend with many cars doing more than 20mph - no place for someone who finds it difficult to

accident waiting to happen' walk fast! I will write immediately to the Traffic Management team. I believe it will take more than signage or a mirror, more like speed bumps or a chicane.” After another incident on the Wellsway in June, a spokesman for B&NES Council told Keynsham Voice that the authority is looking into ways to improve the safety of pedestrians. Following the latest concerns being raised, Councillor Joanna Wright, cabinet member for transport services, said: “Wellsway has clear signage and road markings at regular intervals to remind drivers of the 20mph speed limit, and a mobile flashing ‘20’ sign is often placed near the entrance to the Rock Hill Estate. “Bath and North East Somerset Council does not permit mirrors because of the potential glare that can be caused from headlights and some

POLICE are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a man was killed when his car hit a brick wall in Longwell Green. The incident happened at 3.10am on Sunday August 11 in Craven Way, near the approach to Asda. A Vauxhall Corsa was travelling in a south-westerly direction down Craven Way towards the mini roundabout, where there is an option to turn left towards Marsham Way or right into the supermarket. The car, however, carried straight on, hitting the brick wall at the far side of the roundabout. The male driver received attention at the scene but died shortly afterwards. Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident who may have information. Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting reference 5219184177.

Charity blow as Santa Dash is scrapped THE popular Saltford Santa Dash will not be taking place this year, organisers have announced. The news about the five-mile run will come as a blow to runners and charity fundraisers. Last December’s community event attracted nearly 900 participants in Santa suits and raised money for the charities Jessie May Hospice and Home and Young Minds. But the organising committee say that too few volunteers have come forward to help stage the event in 2019. Richard Evans, from the committee, said they were very disappointed. “We have been blessed with fantastic support over the past six events, which have proven very successful both in community involvement and charity fundraising terms.” The hope is that people will step up and help revive the Santa Dash for 2020. Mr Evans said: “Can I ask that anyone interested in joining a committee to arrange the 2020 event comes forward to register their interest, in the hope that the run can come back even stronger next year. Our contact email is The annual Santa Dash has had to be called off this year because of a shortage of volunteers saltfordsantadash@gmail.com."

Spotting the signs of dental disease

n NEWS The Crown Inn decided to offer free meals like these after a food bank reported a rise in demand

L

ooking after your pet’s teeth is an important part of pet ownership. It is estimated that 80% dogs and 70% cats by the age of 3 years suffer from some form of periodontal disease. This is the most common disease seen within veterinary practice. It starts with early signs of gingivitis (red and sore gums) due to bacteria and plaque deposits and can progress to pain, bleeding and loss of teeth. This can be prevented by good oral care at home. Dental disease most commonly occurs below the gum line, which you can’t see. This is why it is very important to have regular check-ups with your veterinary surgeon.

Myths and facts you may have heard MYTH: My pet is eating its food fine, so there can’t be a problem with its teeth! FACT: Cats are very good at throwing their food to the back of their mouths and swallowing even when they have dental pain. Dogs just swallow their food without chewing to avoid pain from infected teeth. MYTH: My pet shows no sign of pain or drooling, so there’s nothing to worry about! FACT: Animals are very good at hiding pain. Waiting until you see evidence of that pain can lead to serious dental issues. MYTH: Tennis balls and bones are good for my dog’s teeth! FACT: Rubber dog balls are great for exercise, but tennis balls have a felt coating and continuous chewing results in wearing down of the enamel. Bones can cause intestinal obstructions and penetration of the intestines and can be fatal.

Some signs to look out for • • • • •

Bad breath Reddening of gums Tartar on teeth Soreness around the mouth area Drooling and dropping food

Improving you pet's hygiene Prevention is always better than cure. There are many good products on the market that can prevent disease. Tooth brushing with a pet toothpaste is gold standard, and most importantly keep up with regular health visits with your veterinary surgeon. If you have any doubt about your pet’s oral health, please book

Pub helps to feed families in need A PUB in Keynsham has been giving away free meals to families in need during the school holidays. The owners of The Crown Inn on Bristol Road decided to help parents feed their children after seeing a Facebook post from a food bank appealing for donations because of an increased demand over the summer. David Yeomans has co-owned the pub with his partner Luke Skinner for nearly five years. After making a donation to the Keynsham food bank, he decided to go one step further and give away free homemade meals such as sausage and mash, macaroni cheese, roast chicken or tomato pasta to children who would at other times receive free meals at schools. The children have been provided with sandwiches for lunch and then a dinner to take away with no purchase necessary for their parents and no questions asked. All meals have been funded by the pub, and in just over a week David estimated that the pub has given away over 500 meals. It has also hosted a weekly children’s party on a Friday with a buffet and free entertainment. Speaking about the initiative, David said: “We’ve had a great response, which shows that there is a real need in the local area. We’ve had people arrive in tears, but it’s been lovely to see so many smiling faces, and the word has really spread, which is fantastic. Volunteers have been helping us with the cooking and staff morale is really high. “Some people have donated food to us for the service, which is great, and we would really welcome donations of bags of pasta, rice and tinned tomatoes too. We have no immediate plans to stop the service and will continue to do it as long as it is needed.” David told the Voice that the parties will switch to a different day of the week when term starts, and also said that pub is looking to run an after-school club. To find out more, visit the pub’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thecrownkeynsham

10K helps give young a fighting chance

THIS year's Keynsham 10K is set to raise more than £5,000 for young people at a boxing charity. More than 350 runners have already entered the race on Sunday October 6.  Running group Bitton Road Runners and Easton-based boxing gym and charity Empire Fighting Chance re-formed the race in 2018 after a five-year absence because of rising costs. Costs are now covered, with all profits donated to the charity, which transforms young lives through boxing. Working at schools as well as their gym, Empire Fighting Chance supports young people aged 8-25 from deprived areas and disadvantaged backgrounds. Attendees are often experiencing mental health issues, involved in crime or excluded from school. The money raised will go towards funding their 20-week programme, which aims to turn their lives around. Former British international track and field athlete and marathon runner Nick Rose will open the race for the second year.  Speaking of the benefit of Empire Fighting Chance’s involvement, he said: “The Keynsham 10K is very well managed and set in a lovely environment. The scheme from Mactaggart and Mickel Homes Ltd to develop a site known as Land Parcel 9000 off the A4 Bath Road was turned down by Bath & North East Somerset Council. More than 300 objections were raised to the proposal. Councillors said the plot was not allocated for development and the road network could not cope. The developers had appealed and a public inquiry was scheduled for October but this has now been cancelled. Saltford Environment Group, Saltford Parish Council and Keynsham Town Council had all put in statements to the appeal inspector explaining why they opposed the scheme.

ON THE BEAT

T

his month has been a bit of a strange one, when you get tasked by your Sergeant to take out on patrol your local MP, who just happens to be the newly promoted Leader of the House of Commons. I can happily say that Jacob Rees-Mogg came across as a nice chap. He was with us for a few hours working late into the night and even chose to stay on longer than planned when we were called to deal with a local neighbourhood problem. He didn’t shy away from incidents and was happy to engage with the public. It is also interesting being around someone who is such a public figure and the reaction of people - from the skateboarding student making his way back to campus who did a double-take when we were dealing with an accident and came and spoke to him, to the taxi passenger who when passing hung out of the window yelling “Yoooo Jacob”. The last incident that we dealt

with PC James Evans with showed Mr Rees-Mogg how antisocial behaviour is a real problem and the impact it has on a daily basis on local residents and how some of our powers mean that we can’t take immediate action to resolve issues for victims. News from your MP: see Page 48 n We continue to run our beat surgeries around Keynsham and in the Chew Valley, so keep an eye on the Keynsham and Chew Valley Community Pages where we try to advertise these. Please remember that this is not a forum that we monitor daily, so if you wish to have some interaction with us then please do this through the community pages of the Avon and Somerset website.

These can be found at www. avonandsomerset.police.uk under the ‘contact us’ section. n We are still suffering from motorcycle and pedal cycle thefts, so please continue to be vigilant when leaving them unattended,

with sufficient crime prevention. We now have new powers to seize untaxed vehicles being driven on a road, so if your car tax is over two months out of date and we stop you, we will be seizing your car. Car tax often gets overlooked and as such it might be worth checking it along with your MOT and insurance. n Summer is nearly over – well, the school holidays for the kids anyway. With the exam results being out, a lot will move on to the next chapter of their lives. We try to have interactions with children and young adults right the way through their schooling. It’s a rewarding part of the job and we often speak about the police as career. The emergency services offer some of the most rewarding work that you can do, helping and reassuring people in their hour of need. With the government advertising they will be looking to put 20,000 extra police on the streets, maybe now is the time to consider this as a career path!

Day of fun and smiles for children FAMILIES with children suffering from life-limiting illnesses took over Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park for a fun-packed day organised by Kingswoodbased children’s charity Jessie May. A total of 35 families were given complimentary passes to have free roam of the park and its attractions. Chris Roys, chief executive at Jessie May, said: “The annual family fun day is a key event in the Jessie May calendar, where all of our families have the chance to come together and experience something out of the normal day-to-day. “To be able to hold it at Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park again this year meant that we could offer our families a day of fun-filled variety, distracting them from the stresses and worries that they have in their lives, and we are so thankful to everyone involved whose hard

Children enjoying the family fun day organised by the Jessie May charity work made it our best event yet.” Avon Valley CEO Doug Douglas said: “Jessie May is a charity that we are proud to have a long-standing relationship with, and who we love to continue to support and work with. We hope that the family fun day helped to put smiles on the faces of the children, and that all the families were able to take away some precious memories.” A number of specialist provisions were put in to place to make sure the day ran as smoothly as possible for families, including the appearance of a mobile accessible toilet. The charity’s nurses provide vital respite care and emotional support to local families caring for a terminally ill child, as well as end-of-life care and bereavement support for up to five years after a child has died.

Custom-built mountain bikes stolen POLICE are looking for four high-value bikes after they were stolen from a home in Willsbridge. The custom-built mountain bikes were taken from an outdoor building in the rear garden. The bikes are: • a Transition mountain bike (Sentinel model) with hunt wheels, ETR brakes, orange coloured Fox front suspension, black coloured Fox rear suspension and Deity upgrades including handlebars, stem and saddle. • a Santa Cruz mountain bike (V10 model) with full carbon fibre frame (with damage to frame on a rear swing arm which has been professionally repaired), Fox suspension with orange detail and Deity upgrades. • an Orange mountain bike (Alpine 6), with black Fox front and rear suspension, Renthal handlebars and grips plus red

DMR pedals. • A Trek ladies baby blue coloured mountain bike (Remedy 7) with Rockshox

front and rear suspension, Renthal handlebars and stems, Ergon saddle Police are appealing to cycle

dealers, secondhand shops and cycling clubs to be vigilant and contact them if approached and offered the specialist machines.

Teenagers arrested in thefts investigation THREE teenage boys have been arrested after a number of bicycle thefts and burglaries. A 15-year-old and a 17-yearold, both from St George, and a 16-year-old from Staple Hill, were arrested on suspicion of seven counts of burglary and one count of theft. The 15-year-old and 16-yearold boys were also arrested on suspicion of possession of Class B drugs. The arrests – made on Saturday August 10 – come

after an appeal was issued to help locate the owners of the suspected stolen bicycles, resulting in owners from Bath, Downend, Hanham, Nailsea, Portishead, Clifton and St George all identifying their bikes. The three boys have been released under investigation and enquiries are still ongoing, reference 5219176642. Officers are currently in the process of the reuniting the stolen bicycles with their original owners.

Follow these tips to keep your bicycles safe from thieves: • Where possible, store your bicycles in your home • If this isn’t possible, ensure they are kept in a secure outbuilding such as an alarmed and locked shed or garage • Lock your bicycles to something immovable like a wall or floor • Double-lock your bikes using two quality locks, at least one of which should be a D-lock • Get your bikes security marked and registered at BikeRegister and Immobilise • Record the details of your bicycles including noting the frame number (normally found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in), the BikeRegister number plus any other distinguishing features, and take a photo

'It really is a case

Volunteers at the refugee camp in Greece, where Anna Self worked

A GRADUATE from Saltford has told Keynsham Voice about her experience of volunteering at a refugee camp in Greece. Anna Self recently returned from Samos, where she has been volunteering at a refugee camp with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Refugee 4 Refugees, which was established by a refugee called Omar in 2014. She has lived in Saltford with her family her whole life, and she attended Wellsway School before going on to study for a BA in Geography at the University of Liverpool. She is also a long-standing member of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club. After finishing her degree in June 2018 and becoming aware of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, she decided to save up some money and apply for a position with the NGO. Having travelled out to Samos in April, she worked

in the camp’s shop, helping to distribute clothes, shoes and nappies to the new arrivals to the camp in order to provide assistance before they received financial aid.   During the time that Anna was working at the camp, 5,000 people were living there. The island of Samos is only a mile away from Turkey, which is where a large number of refugees from Syria travel from. Many refugees are also from Afghanistan and African countries such as Congo. Speaking about her experience, Anna said: “I live in such a lovely area, and after becoming more and more aware of the refugee crisis in Europe I decided that I wanted to do something to help. I’ve just turned 22 and I went out to Greece on my own. I did feel nervous, but it felt like something I needed to do. “I paid for my own flights, and when I became a co-

of life or death for these people' ordinator in the shop, Refugee 4 Refugees helped to cover my accommodation and food. It is hard for the organisation to be run by volunteers, especially as people can’t afford to be out there in the long term, but they really are helping to make a difference. “It was completely overwhelming being there, and it took a few weeks to adjust to the things I saw on a daily basis, such as people going through rubbish bins, and pregnant women being turfed out of hospital one day after giving birth and having to return to a one-man tent. I also heard stories of children sleeping with rats crawling over them. “Since I’ve returned home I’m told that the situation is getting even worse and that they’ve had so many new arrivals, especially from Syria, where there has been increased fighting and unrest in the north that has forced people over the border.

“It’s also not safe for them in Turkey either, and about 40 people at a time are smuggled over on little dinghies. The smugglers don’t go with them, and if the dinghy gets intercepted by European coastguards then they are taken to the refugee centre, but if it’s

Turkish coastguards then they get sent back. “It really is a case of life or death for these people, and some people have lived in tents for two or three years in really awful conditions, without access to toilets, showers and basic amenities. Many of them

hese photos from mum’s scrapbook were published in The New Observer in April 1969, when I was not quite five years old. The first picture shows Mum, ‘Guide Captain Pat Dawes’ (wearing gloves), leading the Guides towards St John’s Church on the occasion of the St George’s Day Parade, which was always held on the Sunday before St George’s Day. Mum was in her thirties back then. Today she is in her eighties, now living at Homeavon, and still remembers her Guiding days, first in Pensford then Whitchurch and latterly at Mayfield’s HQ Keynsham. You will see the old Westminster Bank in the background and the old Boots the Chemist shop recently taken over by Starzec's. Boots had moved up to Temple Street, where Andrews Estate Agents now are. The Westminster merged with the National Provincial Bank in 1970 - both banks have now gone from Keynsham. The second picture shows 1st Keynsham Scout troop and Cub pack pictured before the same parade. Both my elder brothers, Andrew and Duncan, are in this picture. I was too young and my scouting experience was yet to start. I remember seven of the ten leaders - Mrs Smith, David Oxenham, Tom Tookey, Ron ‘Dixie’ Duggan, Reg ‘Skip’ Fear, Roger ‘Basher’ Bates, and of course Peter ‘Beefy’ Woodcock. Can any of readers recognise themselves or fill in the names of the unknown Scouters? Alistair Dawes

n ADVERTISING FEATURE KEYNSHAM Farmers Market this month will celebrate 20 years of the Somerset Farmers Markets. The organisation, which co-ordinates the network of markets around Somerset and B&NES, was ‘created’ from Agenda 21 money as a direct result of the first Climate Change summit in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nation member states developed an action plan that each local government area should draw up its own plan to ‘act locally’ to prevent climate change by promoting local initiatives focusing on sustainable development and counteracting the damaging effects of globalisation. Since we were formed, the environmental issues have become ever more urgent, the effects of climate change and plastic pollution more apparent, and many species of wildlife extinct or in danger of extinction. So in our small way we began pioneering within the county of Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset a network of farmers

Happy birthday to farmers market! 1999-2019 markets supporting local food production, aiming to reverse the demise of small family farms and re-introducing the concept of buying local food directly from farmers and growers, brewers, cider makers, cheesemakers, bakers, chefs, foragers , and preserve makers. We enforced strict low mileage criteria and asked that non-farmers use local ingredients in their produce wherever possible or fairly traded otherwise. We have over the years also encouraged customers to bring their own bags or purchase one of the 4,000 re-usable jute bags which we have had available over the last 10 years.

However we all recognise that the spotlight is now ‘urgently’ on reducing single use, non-renewable plastics which end up in landfills or in the oceans suffocating the sea life. So we are urging our members to evaluate their packaging used to ensure it can be re-cycled, re-used, compostable or biodegradable depending on their produce. We also applaud our many customers who bring their own re-usable bags and are beginning to bring along their own containers and drinks containers! Come along on Saturday September 14 between 9am- 1pm to support our local farmers and food producers and wish us a Happy Birthday! A quarter of all A-level results were at grade B and above and an impressive 63 per cent of all Level 3 Engineering grades were at Distinction and Distinction*. The school saw a 100 per cent pass rate in computer science, biology, chemistry, design and engineering subjects. One notable student is Bridie Bates, pictured, who is off to Derby University to study motor sport engineering. Principal Danny Wilkinson said: “Bridie joined IKB when we opened in 2015. This was a brave step, but Bridie had the resolve and foresight to recognise IKB as the place she needed to be to follow her lifetime dream of a career in the motor sport industry. “Her success at GCSE and in the sixth form has led to a place at university. "She also benefited from IKB's unique work placement programme that saw her gain invaluable experience with Jaguar Land Rover.” Other students are also beginning degree apprenticeships, for example with Rolls Royce and Dyson.

IKB Academy students have for a third year running achieved positive GCSE results for the STEM area of specialism for the school. A total of 40% of all grades in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) were at a grade 6/B or above and students excelled in Engineering, where over 40% of the grades were a Distinction or Distinction*, equating to an A/A* grade. A successful cohort studied an additional GCSE in Further Maths and many gained at least a B grade in this subject. Students also achieved highly in other subject areas, with over 70% of the students gaining a grade 4 (C grade) in English, essential for access to A-level courses and university. A special mention goes to Jack, Ewan, Lizz, Harriet, Tom, Nathan and Triada, who each achieved 6 or more grade 7s (A grades) and

above. The details are as follows: Jack – grade 9 in Chemistry, grade 8s in Biology, Product Design, Physics, Engineering, Maths and LIBF Ewan – grade 8s in Biology, Construction and Engineering, grade 7s in Chemistry, Product Design and Physics Lizz – grade 8 in Biology, grade 7s in Art, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, Maths and LIBF Harriet – grade 8s in Physics, Maths and Engineering, grade 7s in Biology, Business and Chemistry Tom – grade 8s in Biology and Engineering, grade 7s in Chemistry, Computing, Product Design, Physics and Maths Nathan – grade 8s in Physics and Engineering, grade 7s in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Product Design and English Triada – grade 8s in Chemistry, French, Maths and Engineering, grade 7s in Biology, Product Design, Physics and English

Sixth-formers keep up the good work

WELLSWAY School has a fine tradition of sixth-form achievement and is delighted to report that students have achieved another set of excellent A-level results. The school has maintained last year’s significant improvement in students achieving the highest grades, with over a fifth of all grades at A* or A and 10% of students securing 3 A* or A grades. Wellsway School’s sixth form offers a wide range of opportunities, including the chance to complete the Extended Project Qualification, demonstrating students’ independence, and an impressive 100% of all students who completed the Extended Project Qualification achieved A*-B. Principal Matthew Woodville said: “We are extremely proud of the year group and of their achievements. "These results mean that this talented group of young people will go on to pursue their ambitions in the workplace, at universities and colleges, or in apprenticeships and other training courses. We wish them every success for the future. I would like to formally acknowledge the focus and determination shown by the Year 13 students to their studies and congratulate them on their success.” These excellent results are thanks to the hard work and commitment shown by staff

Broadlands celebrates science success Students at Broadlands Academy have achieved strong results in science and maths among its other GCSE successes

BROADLANDS Academy is celebrating another good year of GCSE results. The school saw strong results in science, with for the first time over a quarter of students studying the more challenging triple science qualification. Maths results were also excellent, up 10 percentage points from 2018. Principal James Hall said: “Despite our rapid growth in student numbers, Broadlands continues to be a small school. This enables

all staff to support and challenge every student to be remarkable. “Broadlands has strength in depth within the curriculum it offers and has an excellent reputation in supporting the transition from primary to secondary.” For the academic year ahead, Broadlands has enriched the curriculum offer to include Performing Arts, alongside the Art and Music GCSEs it already offers. This will complement

the academic and vocational subjects on offer, including Child Development and Health and Social Care, in which the students benefit from being able to learn within the academy’s own nursery (Broadlands Bears). The academy is also transforming four new computer rooms and significantly increasing the number of new computers available to students to far exceed the national average.

College cheers 'outstanding' results

MORE than 660 students picked up their A-level and Btec results at St Brendan's Sixth Form College. Forty-two students were awarded A*s or A grades in all of their subjects. Principal Michael Jaffrain said: “We have had an excellent set of results at A-level, which was particularly impressive in view of the new tougher linear curriculum and the personal barriers some of our students have had to overcome this academic year. "Our Applied General results have also been outstanding. I wish all of our students who will be leaving us the very best for the future.” St Brendan’s students have secured places on some of the country’s most competitive university courses, including four to Oxbridge. Other students are taking a gap year or moving on to apprenticeships with employers including Burges Salmon, Lyons Davidson, Deloitte, Rolls Royce, KPMG and Babcock.

Making memories at mill CHILDREN from The Meadows Primary School have buried a time capsule at Bitton Mill, with help from the parish history group. The whole school got involved in selecting objects for the capsule, which can be dug up in the future for people to see how Bitton has changed. The items included: coins, a grocery receipt for a weekly shop, the school’s timetable and menu, photographs and a map of the school, a school jumper, information on technology, toys, school work, the school motto and logo. Also buried was a brochure for the new homes being built by Linden Homes at Bitton Mill, including floor plans and price lists, and a high-visibility vest. Headteacher Joy Mounter

said: "The experience of burying a time capsule has been invaluable for the children, and the school council relished the opportunity to get hands-on with the digging – it was a very memorable visit.” Marlene from the Bitton Parish History Group said: “I was pleased to help the children bury their time capsule and was impressed with the items they selected. They’d clearly spent a lot of time carefully choosing

what should be included. I find Bitton fascinating and it’s so interesting to see how the site has changed – previously housing a former brass and paper mill, and then manufacturing car seats. "It was sad to see the site derelict for many years and we’re pleased to be helping the new residents learn more about the village. "We were delighted to be involved and it was great to

work with some budding new historians.” Emma Mackay from Linden Homes said: “The time capsule is buried in open space at Bitton Mill and has been marked with a plaque, so people can visit it. "The children will be able to dig it up in 50 years’ time, when they’re in their 50s and 60s, to see how Bitton and life in general has changed. It’s been a wonderful activity for us as well as the children.”

n NEWS from 1st Keynsham Scouts OUR Scouting reporter tells us 25 Scouts and leaders from 1st Keynsham Scouts did just what the founder Baden-Powell suggested and took to the hills for a summer camp. This year’s annual camp was on Exmoor, the perfect place to hike, learn navigation skills and explore. They were based at Horner Wood campsite, which was first used by Keynsham Scouts in the 1970s. For those readers who may remember those days, not much has changed; the stream is fun to explore and the bridge built by Keynsham still exists (well done Beefy & the scouts of the day). While cooking meals on wood fires, damming streams and sleeping in shelters and hammocks are all traditional camp activities, times have changed, and this year coasteering and sea paddle boarding were added to the mix. Sadly, your reporter was not able to capture any pictures of the coasteering but did catch up with the Scouts on their larger-than-normal paddle board. Did they all get on? Well, take a guess! As one young Scout said: "It’s been a brilliant week - just a shame we have to go home”. What will next year bring? n WE would love to hear from any adult who would like to join the team. The key to success is adults: our volunteer base has opportunities from leading young people to managing a campsite and maintenance. It makes no difference if you are eighteen or eighty - we all have skills to share. Contact scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk or ring 07714 237525.

Wife and husband leading the Rotary KEYNSHAM Rotary has conferred the club presidency on retired head teacher Lynne Pike, who takes over from immediate past president Roger Spooner. It was a family affair as Lynne’s husband, John, was inaugurated as senior vice-president at the same time, taking office next year.  Lynne has particular interests in youth matters and is working closely with schools on competitive projects such as, earlier this year, building ‘Bug Houses’ and in future setting up competitions for ‘Young Writer’ and ‘Young Photographer’. More will be announced on these later and we hope to celebrate and publicly display something of the young talent in our community.  Lynne has instigated a ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ award, running currently, to recognise young people who have made a difference by helping others. This event runs until October this year, and full details and entry form can be found on the Keynsham Rotary website www.keynshamrotary.org Lynne outlined a number of public events which will be run during her year, indicating that Mencap Keynsham will be a major beneficiary from fundraising, so the Rotary hopes for public support for these. Details of how to contact Keynsham Rotary for further information are on our website.

Folk music memories of the Lamb and Lark The photograph of the Lamb and Lark which appeared in the August issue of Keynsham Voice took me straight back to the 1960s. In 1967 I was working in the sales accounts office at the Somerdale chocolate factory and, as performing was one of my main interests, I involved myself in Fry's pantomime section of the famous Fry Club. One of the managers in the club was Brian Davies, who would from time to time organise inter-departmental talent shows where I and a colleague, Alan Carter, would play guitars and sing and also accompany singers as required. You must remember that there were no such things as backing tracks those days. In 1967, Brian decided to start a folk club in Keynsham as such clubs had become very popular at that time. He decided to hold these sessions in a local pub and, on enquiring at the Lamb and Lark, came to an agreement with the landlord that they would be held on a Monday night, as that tended to be a rather slow night. Alan and I were persuaded to be the warm-up act for the first night and we would be followed by various other acts that Brian talked into coming, and there would be a "star" turn to finish the night. I'm not sure what the financial arrangements were but I suspect there was a nominal hire charge with the expectation of good bar takings.

Alan and I were promised a free drink but never actually found Brian to get them. However the night was a great success and the Key Club was launched and kept going every week until early 1969, when Brian accepted an invitation to spend time in USA helping young people with gymnastics projects. It was a very happy time and I still remember it so well. Our Monday evenings felt rather empty after those two years came to an end. Ian Gambrell

Thank you Keynsham and Saltford and indeed others. It is the community, through human kindness and concern for others, that makes it possible for us to help those who are in food crisis and in need of support. Alan Hale Chairman and Co-ordinator Keynsham Foodbank

Your food donations make such a vital difference May I take advantage of your letters section to say a very big thank-you to the people of Keynsham and Saltford for the support they gave the Keynsham Food Bank during our twoday collection at Tesco Keynsham. Those shopping at Tesco gave over a tonne of food, which made a vital difference to our stock holding. I would also like to thank the manager, Andrew Bailey, and with his team at Tesco, for the support they afforded us. Queens Road Co-op have also offered us ÂŁ200 worth of food as we wait to become a food bank partner with them also. Facebook showed its positive side in enabling us to make the community aware of our plight and in turn they responded with donations through the two drop boxes at Tesco and Waitrose as well as at the Tesco collection.

wenty walkers met under threatening skies at the Memorial Park cafe for the August walk. This walk was to take us around Keynsham following the annual Keynsham in Bloom, this time the umbrella trail. We hadn't gone 400 yards when the heavens opened, and we were forced to take shelter under our own umbrellas. However the skies did clear and the rest of the walk was rain-free. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Nigel Somers

Pastor Elim Church

It's easy to get caught in the trap of working harder and harder to earn more and more, when we may well already have what can provide us with the greatest possible happiness

The fisherman knows best

O

ne day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish. About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to engage him in conversation. "You aren't going to catch many fish that way," said the businessman to the fisherman. "You should be working, not lying on the beach!" The fisherman looked up at the businessman,

smiled and replied, "And what will my reward be?" "Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was the businessman's answer. "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!" "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!" he said. "And then what will my reward be?" repeated

the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!" Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my reward be?" The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again? You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in the world!" The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "And what do you think I'm doing right now?" Contentment is a difficult attitude to learn, but so important. It's easy to get caught in the trap of working harder and harder to earn more and more, when we may well already have what can provide us with the greatest possible happiness. "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content."(I Timothy 6:6-8) Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 9082121 or 07715770448

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

Painted Lady's astonishing journey is

S

A Painted Lady butterfly on buddleia

eptember sees the start of the autumn migration season, a word normally considered to refer to the bi-annual movement of birds from north to south or vice versa. However birds are not the only creatures to migrate. Butterflies in particular make journeys to pastures new and even aphids (those nasty little bugs that eat our plants) can be carried in the wind to foreign climes. Some butterflies will only migrate a short distance - Small Whites for instance may travel just a few kilometres - but there is a great variation with Red Admirals and Painted Ladies at the other end of the migration scale. Neither they nor their eggs can survive the cold frosts in winter and so, out of necessity, they travel south to southern Europe or Africa. And this summer saw a greater number of Painted Lady butterflies arrive from the continent. Although we may not have seen them in their hundreds in our gardens as can sometimes happen, they were certainly more prevalent than usual.

n BACK TO NATURE

a miracle of nature with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

And their return journeys can be a whopping 9,000 miles (more than double the famous Monarch butterfly migration in North America), although not all as the same adult butterfly! Over one year up to six successive generations of Painted Ladies may migrate across Europe and Africa. For example a butterfly may travel south from northern Europe to Britain, where it will breed and die, and the next generation will carry on the migration back to Africa. The extent of the annual journey undertaken by the Painted Lady butterfly is astonishing. This tiny creature - weighing less than a gram, with a brain the size of a pinhead, and

no opportunity to learn from older, experienced individuals - undertakes an epic intercontinental migration in order to find plants for its caterpillars to eat. Astonishing! n This month sees the release of our program of talks for the autumn/ winter season. For more details, go to our Facebook page. Our first talk on Friday October 11 - Galapagos - Islands that Changed the World - features a return visit by speaker Michael Pitts, award-winning underwater cameraman, whose filming was featured on Galapagos 3D, a brilliant David Attenborough series. The event at Baptist Church Hall, Keynsham, starts at 7:30pm. n But before that we have our annual river dipping with our chair Dave Sage. It’s an opportunity to have some fun but also check out the health of the River Chew flowing through Keynsham. Join us on Sunday September 29, meeting at Dapps Hill Bridge, Keynsham, at 2pm. And don’t forget the wellies. It’s going to get wet, wet, wet!!

Appeal of the apple JAMES Rich is keeping up a family tradition by publishing a book called Apple - Recipes from the Orchard. James is a Somersetborn and bred, cidermaker’s son, and his family has been making a living from apples for centuries. James grew up helping his dad at work: planting the orchards, pressing the apples to gather the juice, and even helping to clean the giant 5,700-litre (10,000-pint) oak vats that are used during the fermenting process. The book is a celebration of the fruit in all its forms. James says that everything from the apple blossom to the fallen fruit can be used in cooking, making apples a hardy, versatile and delicious essential in the kitchen. From whole apples to apple compote, cider to cider brandy, Apple boasts almost one hundred recipes featuring all kinds of varieties. James, who as a child was encouraged to explore food and flavour in the kitchen by his grandmother, now divides his time between Somerset and living in London, working as a food writer. Apple is published by Hardie Grant and costs £20.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Through the arch to abbey's history

O

n Station Road, Keynsham, stands one of the town’s most intriguing and distinctive structures - the archway at the entrance to a private drive. What is the significance of the arch and who built it? The story is somewhat tortuous but leads us back to Keynsham Abbey, the main church of which was directly behind the arch and about 100 metres away. On the orders of Henry VIII, the Abbey was dissolved on 23rd January 1539: for many people in and around Keynsham, life changed forever that day. Soon afterwards, the bells were sold and the lead stripped from the roofs; the buildings would have deteriorated quickly, with some of the stone being sold, or pilfered, for building material. In 1552 the Abbey and its land was bought from King Edward VI by Sir Thomas Bridges from Oxfordshire. Ownership passed through several generations of Bridges but another Thomas, who inherited in 1587, was the first to live in Keynsham. A mansion, known confusingly as Keynsham Abbey, was then built on the site, no doubt using stone from the actual Abbey, and this survived until about 1776, when it was razed to the ground. However, the mansion had an associated building, usually described as an estate office, which stood until the mid-nineteenth century. This was situated close to St John’s Church, possibly near what is now the carriageway of Station Road. A painting survives in Taunton that shows this estate office, and the picture of this shows the elaborate stonework around the main door. When the building was demolished the purchaser decided to recreate this doorway, and the outcome is the feature we have today. It is not an exact replica although it does incorporate the Bridges coat-of-arms in the pediment. Close examination shows one or two stones with Anglo-Saxon motifs – these may have come from an earlier church on the site – but there is little doubt that most of the

Above: The archway on Station Road Below: Keynsham Abbey estate office

stones would once have been part of the Abbey buildings. l Last month we described the history of the Keynsham Picture House, sited where Coffee 1 is today, and its operator Mrs Williams. Our Archivist has now found court reports giving

details of the man who started it. His name was Arthur Augustus Harse and he was a cycle maker in Easton, Bristol. Presumably seeing a business opportunity, he borrowed money, spent £280 on building the cinema and another £175 on fitting it out. The opening was in December 1912 (later than we believed) but takings were far below his expectations and under pressure from his main creditor, bankruptcy proceedings against Mr Harse had commenced at the Guildhall, Bristol, by the following June. These must have been followed by the purchase of the business by Mrs Williams. l A reminder that on Sunday, September 8th , Richard Dyson from the Society will be leading a guided walk around Keynsham on the theme of “The General History of the Town Centre”. Meet by the Café in the Memorial Park for a start at 2.30 pm. All are welcome and there is no charge.

Here's how to find the right hymn ONE of Bath’s leading mixed-voiced choirs is going viral this month when it launches a website called Hymnsearch. The Bath Chorus was established eight years ago by music man Grenville Jones and has sang all around the country, supporting many local and national charities. Grenville said: “www.hymnsearch. co.uk includes many well-loved hymns that would be suitable for special family celebrations or memorial services. Hymnsearch directs viewers to some lovely hymns sung by the Chorus which can then be seen on YouTube. The words of each hymn also appear on screen to further help in choosing the appropriate hymn." The Bath Chorus starts back on Monday September 2. Rehearsals take place at St Bartholomew’s Church in Oldfield Park, and there is a simple voice test for new members.

his week, the story of my ancestor, John ReesMogg, was reported in The Times by Roland White. Mr White wrote that historian Catherine Bateson had recently uncovered an 1852 account from the Sherborne Mercury of rioting at a general election hustings whereby a savage attack was made on my great-greatgrandfather’s elder brother, John Rees-Mogg. “J Rees Mogg, Esq. was beaten by the rioters and escaped into a nearby house” by a mob which had assembled in Clutton who had taken “the hats off the Conservatives and flung them in their faces.” Afterwards, “barrels of beer were served by the Radical Party” which, apparently, failed to “tranquillise the mob.” My ancestor was, indeed, a colourful character.  A captain of the North Somerset Yeomanry and county solicitor,

John Rees-Mogg was married three times and frequented Wells to gamble, which at that time was known as a den of inequity but could not be further from the truth today.  John Rees-Mogg often found himself in scrapes but it was his brother, William, my direct ancestor, who intervened on several occasions to prevent any unpleasant consequences. It is always fascinating to hear stories of one’s forebears, especially when there is a local link.  It is hard to imagine any residents of Clutton, whose wonderful flower show recently took place, behaving in such an uncivilised fashion.  As I have mentioned in previous articles, my family has an historic connection to the show so I am always delighted to be invited and, more importantly, I am pleased that I get a better reception than John Rees-Mogg did.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Let's help young people protect the climate they inherit

G

retaThunberg, the student climate activist, is midAtlantic as I write this column. She’s at the start of her one-year sabbatical from school to bring the voice of young people to global gatherings of world leaders. Greta, pictured above, inspired thousands of children and teenagers to attend school strikes on Fridays to protest against the devil-may-care approach to climate change of their political leaders. Whether you approve or disapprove of kids walking out of school to voice their deep concerns, there’s no arguing with the fact that it’s future generations who will feel the full brunt of the effects of climate change. I read in the paper the other day that Goldsmiths, University of London, is banning the sale of beef products from its premises in its attempt to become carbon neutral by 2025. Students will also face a 10p levy on bottles of water and single-use plastic cups when the academic year starts to discourage their use. The head of the college says that he’s reacting to what the students – who care passionately

about the future of their environment – want. This led me to wonder what our schools and colleges locally are doing to prepare for carbon neutrality. Local secondary schools offer ‘meal deals’ where a bottle of water or sugary drink is included, which to my mind reinforces the throwaway society message. At a recent school litter pick we found hundreds of discarded water bottles, and not a single recycling point in sight. Could schools take a leaf out of Goldsmith’s book and impose a levy on single-use plastic bottles, or even provide a discount for refills? And whilst I’m not advocating that schools all go vegetarian, perhaps their caterers could introduce meat-free Mondays, and cut down on red and processed meat on their menus. These are just two small changes, but they’re a start. Schools need to do more than just educate their students in academic subjects. They need to encourage them to make sustainable choices and reflect the concerns that more and more young people have about the climate crisis that they’re set to inherit.

Taste of India and Palace trip on varied menu

T

here has been much activity taking place at the Keynsham WI. In July we held a very well-attended Indian cookery demonstration by Bini from Sweet Cumin.  Bini was a brilliant speaker with lots of stories to tell, and her food was delicious and well received by everyone. Our craft group commenced a project to make button-together bunting for use at various social events. The August meeting was great fun. Ladies from Stockwood WI brought along their indoor curling equipment and nearly 50 members had a go - some were better than others!  It was a really good way for members to mingle and get to know each other. Nicola Harvey came along to the craft group in August to run a workshop on wet felting - a new craft to us all. It was quite a wet and soapy affair but again was very much fun.  We also ran a trip to Wells to tour the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. Although it is quite close to home, many of us had never been there before.  The guide was very informative and after the tour we enjoyed tea and cake in the palace cafe. In September we are looking forward to a talk from Emma Britton, the BBC Radio Bristol presenter, who is going to tell us about her unusual journey into broadcasting.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Tombland CJ Sansom This is an epic book but well worth sticking with all 800 pages. It is the next instalment of the Shardlake series and begins in 1549. Henry VIII is dead and his young son, Edward VI, is on the throne but under a protectorate of his uncle, the Duke of Somerset. England is in chaos, with wars in Scotland and countryside in open revolt. Set against all this, Matthew Shardlake is still working as a lawyer but has been employed by the young Lady Elizabeth to investigate the gruesome murder of a distant relation, Edith Boleyn. So Shardlake, along with his assistant Nicholas Overton, sets out for the summer assizes at Norwich to investigate the murder and try to prevent the execution of Edith's husband, John, the prime suspect. But as the investigation continues, East Anglia explodes in a peasant uprising, and Shardlake finds his loyalties tested. As with all the Shardlake books, the historical detail is excellent, and there are colourful characters at every turn. This is a great crime novel and I can see why it is so popular.

The Power Naomi Alderman as reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant In a really close future, girls - due to a chemical that was released

during the Second World War - get a power, like an electric current than runs in their fingers. We follow different characters with the power who discover what it means to not be afraid anymore. At the beginning I thought the idea was exciting - if we reverse history and social position, what would happen if it was women who had the power? Even if the book starts well and develops some different ideas and directions - power in politics and religion - I found that the author was soon overcome by the possibilities and decided to stick to a restricted view. What could have been really well-developed turns into just hatred and revenge. I found myself shocked by the violence described and the choice to mute the voices of women who won’t have chosen those paths. It completely lacked love and empathy. The message is clear: Women with power are no different from men with power. Adult DVD

Nureyev’s style of dancing really well – this is a great movie, directed by the actor Ralph Fiennes, with excellent period detail. Young Adult Fiction

Silverfin Charlie Higson A good book for any reluctant teenager who wants to read a story that is not about magic and wizards! The author has created a series of stories about the young James Bond. Silverfin is the first of the series. It begins with James starting at Eton, where he meets his first enemy and starts breaking the rules. He soon finds himself on the shores of Loch Silverfin, where something deadly can be found in its waters. James makes a discovery that threatens to unleash a new breed of warfare. This book is definitely for young adults aged between 13-15 years because of some of the content but it is a great read - full of adventure and fast-paced action.

The Fellowship of the Ring JR Tolkein as reviewed by Erin Conlon, one of our younger reviewers The Fellowship of the Ring is the epic introduction to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. When Bilbo leaves for Rivendell, he gives Frodo his beloved ring, a souvenir of Bilbo’s earlier adventures. Seventeen years later there’s a rising in the East, and the existence of the ring means that Frodo, as the bearer of the ring, must try to stop Sauron from gaining power, and destroying Middle Earth. And so it

begins … the quest that will save or doom Middle Earth. A whole world of men, elves, dwarves and other creatures, and an adventure like no other. Each character meticulously planned and portrayed. The novel holds a wealth of plot twists and suspense. A must read for everyone.

PEN TO PAPER

n NEWS

with Keynsham Creative Writers

Procrastination I know I should write something, I’ve not written something for ages. I’ve plenty of pens and some pencils, And loads and loads of clean pages. But the sun is shining so brightly, And the sky is a beautiful blue, I should really be out in the garden, Where I know there is plenty to do. But I can’t make a start in the garden While the house is a mess and a stink. Suppose someone calls unexpected, Whatever will they think?

And I’m sadly out of practice, My music is gathering dust. And my instruments need some attention, Before they seize up with rust. And I’ve stuff to prepare for lessons next week, My teaching plans are all at sea. I should really be keeping one lesson ahead, But my pupils are one up on me. But it’s lunchtime, I’m hungry, it’s Sunday as well, I’m feeling a slight loss of heart. And I’ve not yet read yesterday’s paper... Tomorrow I’ll make a fresh start. George Liddell

The last 16 of the Somerset Bowls Association Turnbull Cup game saw Frys make the short trip to Keynsham. Keynsham made the better start but Frys were able to stick with them, with rink 4 giving Frys a rink lead. After halfway, the game changed, with Keynsham pulling away on rinks 1 and 2, and rink 4 pulling back, putting Keynsham into a good lead. But rink 3 weren't done yet, and pulled back their rink, keeping Frys in with a slim chance. With rink 3 a few ends behind, it meant they could go on the attack, knowing they needed to overturn a 20-plus shot difference. Despite a good effort, they fell short with 2 ends left to play with 20 shots too much to get, with Keynsham coming away 88-68 winners.

Fighting Frys' valiant efforts Tuesday July 23:

Scores: Rink 1: 13-28; Rink 2: 11-24; Rink 3: 24-23; Rink 4: 20-13; Frys 68-88 Keynsham.  Wednesday July 24: Wednesday night was Frys’ second game in the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey, with Redland Green hosting. A poor start on rink 4 set Frys on the back foot.

The other rinks were able to stay in touch but unable to pull back much ground. After halfway, rink 1 also started losing multiple shots, and with rink 1 not able to improve much, Redland Green won comfortably, putting up 98 shots to Frys 54, bringing Frys’ cup runs to an end. Scores: Rink 1: 9-29; Rink 2: 22-13; Rink 3: 16-21; Rink 4: 7-35; Frys 54-98 Redland Green.   Thursday July 25: The 14th game of the league season saw Frys travel to Long Ashton. Frys were able to take a lead, but with rink 2 falling behind, the game remained tight. The game got even tighter when Long Ashton pulled back on rink 3. Some crucial shots late from rink 2 helped keep Frys in front. Rink 3 were able to hold out to get Frys 2 points, and with Frys comfortably winning rink 1 and picking up 4 shots on their last end, Frys came out 49-41 winners with 8 points, moving them into 3rd in the table, 11 points off second with 4 games left. Scores: Rink 1: 22-9; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 15-13; Frys 49-41 Long Ashton (8-2).

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

fail to overcome local rivals in cup thriller

Thursday August 1: Bottom club BAC travelled to Frys, with the home side looking for the win to keep up the promotion push. A poor start on rinks 1 and 3 saw BAC pull out an early lead. Rink 2 were able to pull a lead for the home side, but Frys still found themselves trailing. Despite Frys keeping the game in touching distance, a lacklustre performance from Frys saw BAC come away 48-43 winners, with Frys only picking up 2 points from rink 2's win.

combined for 21 shots in 8 combined ends, turning the game in favour of the home side. Frys entered the final 2 ends of the game 10 shots up. The drama wasn't over as Frys debated a possible measure for the second shot on Rink 2. Frys decided to play the final shot, which the skip drew, jamming the jack between Keynsham’s shot bowl and Frys’ bowl, with the tied end securing the game for Frys. Rink 1 finished the game conceding a single, giving Frys a 75-66 win, retaining the Alsop Shield.

Scores: Rink 1: 14-18; Rink 2: 16-12; Rink 3: 13-18; Frys 43-48 BAC (2-8).

Score: Rink 1: 21-16; Rink 2: 17-16; Rink 3: 10-24; Rink 4: 27-10; Frys 75-66 Keynsham.

Friday August 2:

Thursday August 8:

The first Friday in August saw the 50th edition of the annual Alsop Shield between Frys and Keynsham. Last year’s winners Frys hosted the game, but a poor start from rink 3 gave the visitors the early lead. With the other rinks holding close, Frys were able to hold the deficit at the halfway point. Rink 3 were able to stop Keynsham pulling away and picking up a few useful shots. With the game entering the final 20 ends, Keynsham still held the lead. However rinks 1 and 4

The artificial surface of Imperial was the venue for the 16th game of Frys’ league season. Both teams got good starts on rinks 1 and 2, with rink 3 remaining tight. The game remained close, but rink 2 lost the final 4 ends and a poor night on rink 3 cost Frys the win, with Imperial coming away 54-50 winners, with 4 points dropping Frys to 5th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 4-30; Rink 2: 27-10; Rink 3: 19-14; Frys 50-54 Imperial (4-6).

Thursday August 15: Frys’ final home game of the league season saw them welcome Avonvale 'A'. A tight start saw neither team gain much of an advantage. Both clubs had rinks edge away with picking up singles and twos. Frys got an advantage on rink 2, giving Frys the halfway lead. Rink 1 continued to pull away, giving Frys the upper hand. With rink 1 only conceding a single shot in the game, Frys comfortably won the game with rink 2 holding out after a tight battle and rink 3 not quite completing a late comeback taking 8 points from the 54-33 win. With Yate 'A' picking up 4 points in their game, Frys’ chances of promotion came to an end. Scores: Rink 1: 24-1; Rink 2: 17-13; Rink 3: 13-17; Frys 54-31 Avonvale 'A' (8-2). l For more information about Fry's Bowling Club or if you wish to apply for membership, contact secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959, email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com. n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

Grant to help bowling green stay in shape

REPRESENTATIVES from Keynsham Bowling Club were delighted to attend the recent town council annual grants awards evening. Club secretary David Hockney said: “The club were delighted to learn they have been given ÂŁ500 from Keynsham Town Council towards the significant cost of installing a new irrigation system for the bowling green. The club is grateful for the continued support provided by the town council.â€? Back on the green, a rather unique occasion took place in the Saturday North Somerset League when all three men’s teams were playing at home. The C team beat Knowle C team whilst

the A and B teams, being in the same division, bowled against each other. Whilst the A team won on two of the rinks, the score on the third was 24-10 in favour of the B team, which resulted in an overall score of 56-53 for the B team. That posed a problem for the selectors! The men recently played local rivals Frys in the Turnbull Cup, with each side winning two rinks. However Keynsham scored 24-11 and 28-13 on its winning rinks, resulting in an overall victory of 88-68. The team then travelled to Frome Park to play in the quarter final, where they were narrowly beaten.

Due to heavy rain the annual fixture against the Bristol Blind Club had to be cancelled. The annual fixture between the ladies and gents has taken place, with seven rinks of four being played. The ladies triumphed on two of the rinks but were just pipped to the post on shots - only just!!! Our photo shows the two teams before roll-off. One of the big social events of the year occurred with the BBQ in aid of the Captain's Charity being attended by about 70 playing and social members. While the cooking took place under heavy rain, the sun eventually shone and a good afternoon was had by all.
