Friends and family From Page 1 use a walking stick as the illness has taken its toll on her mobility and balance and suffers severe fatigue. A different, aggressive form of treatment, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), has shown promise in NHS patients who meet strict criteria – but Rebecca was devastated to be told she was not eligible. She said: “Because of the MS it feels like the last two years have been wasted. With treatment it should relieve the symptoms so you can build yourself back up to a base point after six months or so, but I have had relapse on relapse so I am never back to my base point. “The fatigue is really bad when you’ve got two little boys. You still have to do the school runs and daily tasks at home and I’ve always tried to be someone who just gets on with it. “My youngest would be outdoors all the time if he could and they both like rugby and

playing on their bikes and I try to do as much as I can with them. I have always been a hands-on mum so it’s very frustrating I can’t do as much as I want.” Now, after researching the procedure online and talking to other MS patients who have travelled abroad for HSCT, her loved ones have swung into action to raise the £48,000 needed to get her to Mexico for the month-long procedure. Rebecca, who is married to Rich, 41, said: “The boys call it ‘Mummy’s magic medicine’ as at first they thought it was just a story I was telling them – then they realised what I was talking about was real. “The whole point of HSCT is to halt the MS and it can get rid of some of the symptoms, depending on your specific circumstances. The earlier you have the procedure the better, and the more chance you have of reclaiming your life. I have everything going for me – my age and type of MS – and now I just need to get the funds in place.”

Works to hit rail journeys for three months Train users are being advised to check journeys before they travel in the next three months as Network Rail carries out major engineering work on lines around Bristol, leading to “significant” changes to timetables in the area. Great Western Railway said in a statement the two projects – completing electrification work and the Filton Four Track project – would affect all services that travel through the Bristol area and would not be “pain-free” for customers. The statement said: “Lines in and around Bristol will be closed to allow for electrification work to be completed through Bristol Parkway. “This will then be followed by work to double the number of tracks between Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads with the Filton Four Track project. “The work will involve both weekend and weekday closures and will impact on all long distance and local services that normally operate through Bristol

Parkway or Bristol Temple Meads.” No trains will call at Bristol Parkway from September 15 until October 6 as electrification work is carried out, with diversions and bus replacement services in place. On October 13 and 14 there will be no trains via Parkway or between Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads. Track laying will take place between the two stations from October 27 until November 18, while on November 11 buses are due to replace trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa as signalling on the line is upgraded. For full details, visit GWR. com/Bristol2018 and to check services before you travel visit GWR.com/Check.

rally to help mum meet £48,000 target HSCT is an intense chemotherapy treatment that Rebecca will undergo over 28 days. It effectively wipes out your immune system and then reboots it using stem cells previously removed from your body, treated and stored. She will be kept in isolation for several weeks as her immune system regrows and best friend Kate Davison will be travelling with her for support. Rebecca says she has been amazed at how family and friends – from fellow Chandag school run mums to people she has known since she was at school herself – have rallied around, launching online fundraising appeals, signing up to run the Keynsham 10k and helping her organise a major fundraising fancy dress night in September. She said: “It’s just crazy, I didn’t expect it to be as big as this – I would normally just keep quiet about things. They all just want to get me there and I’m

really lucky to have had their support.” The fundraising celebrity fancy dress party is taking place on Friday, September 28, at Stothert & Pitt RFC in Corston from 7pm. Tickets cost £15 and include entertainment from Stuart’s disco and street food from JC Kitchen while friends Tracey, Jade and Marie are organising a grand raffle with prizes from local businesses. Veteran carries Keynsham poppy on poignant journey to Falkland Islands

Terry O’Neill with the knitted poppy from Fiona Bell

As thousands of handmade poppies pour in to help create a spectacular Remembrance Day tribute in Keynsham, one of their number has travelled nearly 8,000 miles to a site where many British soldiers lost their lives 36 years ago. A poppy made by Fiona Bell has been placed on a cross on a hill in the Falkland Islands where members of Plymouthbased 42 Commando fought and died in 1982 during the Falklands War. The knitted flower was carried there by veteran Terry O’Neill, who returned to the site of the conflict this summer to drop his medal over the spot where the British landing ship Sir Galahad was sunk. The vessel was bombed in June 1982, and 56 men lost their lives in the air attack.

This summer, Fiona was staying at the Dorset hotel where Terry worked and heard about his journey to pay his respects to fallen colleagues and offered him one of the poppies she was making as part of the Keynsham in Bloom project. The poppy was placed on Hill 24 where the West Country unit lost friends during the conflict and Terry’s 42 Commando comrades all passed on their thanks to Fiona. Terry also reported that a woman working in the post office had pledged to make another poppy each year to replace it. Volunteers have now handed in more than 10,000 knitted flowers to help create a cascade of poppies that will spill down the tower of St John’s Church as part of Keynsham’s Remem-

Long-stay parking rises, short-stay frozen

A display of 120 poppies made by Fiona and fellow knitters in Saltford brance Day tribute this November. It’s now all hands on deck to attach the poppies to the netting to create the display – for information on how to get involved see news from Keynsham in Bloom on Page 29. Knitted poppies are being accepted until mid-October and residents are being invited to

guess the final number that will make up the cascade. Anyone wishing to enter should submit their guess along with their name and contact number to Keynsham In Bloom via Keynsham Town Council at 15-17 Temple Street or by emailing deputytownclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk.

The cost of long-stay parking in Keynsham has risen as new charges introduced by Bath and North East Somerset Council took effect in August. However, motorists parking for up to three hours in the town will see no change as short-stay fees have remained the same “to support the High Street and local traders”, the council said. From August 13, a four-hour stay costs 90p, eight hours is £1.60 and all day is £2.10. Parking fees across Bath have also been given an overhaul as the council tries to reduce air pollution and encourage people to use the city’s park and ride services. A new flat hourly rate of £1.60 has been introduced across all of the council-run off-street car parks in Bath, capped at a maximum charge of £15 a day. B&NES residents are eligible for a 10 per cent discount on the charges if they register their details with MiPermit at www. wanttopark.com/bathnes

Sunday on-street parking in the city is still free of charge and park and ride prices have not increased. Councillor Mark Shelford, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “We carried out an extensive consultation last year which showed broad support for the aims of our parking strategy, in particular using long-stay parking charges to encourage the use of park and rides or public transport. “We want to see more people using the park and ride or public transport rather than driving into Bath centre to park and we are encouraging everyone to walk or cycle for shorter journeys whenever they can.” Revenue raised from parking charges goes towards local transport initiatives, such as Safer Routes to School schemes, as well as action to reduce traffic and tackle air pollution and to cover the cost of enforcement.

My pet has a tick – what should I do?

W

ith the tick season in full swing in this warm humid weather, it’s important that you check your pets daily for these nasty little critters. Ticks are wingless bloodsucking insect-like creatures that feed on warm-blooded animals. They can be found anywhere on your pet's body (usually in areas where there is less fur – most commonly on the face and front part of the body or under the belly) and they appear like a big wart or beauty mark. Your pet is most likely to come into contact with ticks when they venture into woods and fields. The ticks climb up to the tips of grass and wait for a host (like your pet) to pass by so that they can attach themselves and burrow close into the skin. If you find that your pet has a tick don’t panic! You can remove the tick using a tick remover, which you can get from your vet practice. Do not use tweezers as this can result in the tick’s legs being left behind. Slide the tick remover around the tick and remove by turning the tick remover anticlockwise until the tick is no longer attached. The first time you do this it would be wise to contact your veterinary practice for a demonstration. Most

practices offer appointments with a veterinary nurse who can show you how it’s done. Should I be worried? The main concern when your pet has a tick is that it could be carrying bacteria or viruses that transfer to your pet. In the UK the most common disease spread by ticks is Lyme’s disease and it is important to note that people can also become infected. For a tick to be able to infect your pet it needs to be attached for 36 to 48 hours (CDC.gov 2018). The risk to your pet is therefore minimal as long as you remove the tick as soon as you spot it. How can I prevent my pet from getting ticks? Ticks can be prevented using various products that you can get from your local veterinary practice. Tablets, spot-on preparations or medicated collars can be used to prevent your pet from getting ticks. Contact your local veterinary practice for advice on which is most suitable for your pet. If you would like more advice on removing ticks and preventative treatments, speak to your vet practice, or call us at Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 and one of our practice nurses will be happy to help.

Fire station hosts first ‘rescue day’ Firefighters are inviting the public to take a closer look at the equipment they use in rescues at an open day this month. Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) is welcoming teams from all over the country to Hicks Gate fire station on September 1 for a public rescue day, the first of its kind in the UK. The event will feature demonstrations of heavy rescue equipment used in road collisions and trauma care and a joint exercise involving urban search and rescue. Lee Rogers, watch manager for AF&RS, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting this prestigious event and showing exactly what we do on a day-to-day basis. “Road traffic collisions are a big part of what we respond to and being able to deal with these effectively and efficiently is crucial. “Events like this can be a real eye-opener to people who don’t fully consider dangers on the road and how quickly a distraction can turn fatal. It only

takes a second for something to go wrong.” The day, which is being held in partnership with United Kingdom Rescue Organisation (UKRO) will be divided into two time slots, with members of the public able to choose either 10 am to noon or 1pm to 3pm. Dan Quin, UKRO director for education and development, added: “This event is very unique, with a particular focus on heavy rescue, and is the first and only of its kind in the UK which provides a dedicated opportunity to learn and develop those skills. “Heavy rescue is a very particular skill set and these scenarios will not only allow those involved to develop their skills, but also to showcase the amazing and technical work rescue teams do in often tricky and demanding situations.” To book free tickets, visit, https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/hicks-gate-firestation-rescue-open-daytickets-48809472446?utm_ term=eventurl_text

BBC radio presenter loses job over plan to stand in next general election A radio presenter has announced that he will stand against Jacob Rees-Mogg in the next general election – losing his job at the BBC just hours later. Dr Phil Hammond, who has presented BBC Radio Bristol’s Saturday Surgery programme for 12 years, announced on Twitter on August 21 that he was “honoured” to have been selected as the National Health Action (NHA) Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for North East Somerset. Dr Hammond said he was “sad and puzzled”, however, to be told the same day he was being immediately dismissed from his BBC role over concerns there would be a “conflict of interest”. He said he had been previously advised by bosses that he would have to stand down during purdah – the period leading

Dr Phil Hammond announced he will stand in North East Somerset, his home constituency up to an election once a date has been announced – and had decided to declare his intention to stand as early as possible “to be completely open and transparent” as uncertainty surrounds the date of the next vote. Dr Hammond, who qualified as a GP in 1991, said: “I strongly suspect whoever made this

decision has never listened to any of my broadcasts. Such a sudden decision smells strongly of fear. There is no political bias on the Saturday Surgery, just three hours of health and happiness with some live music. I shall really miss the fantastic team at BBC Radio Bristol and all the loyal listeners. It’s been a

hugely enjoyable 12 years.” A BBC spokesperson said: “Impartiality is at the heart of our journalism. Active political involvement is an area covered by our editorial guidelines. Standing as a candidate in an election is a conflict of interest and someone seeking election is unable to continue in this type of editorial role.” The NHA Party campaigns for better funding for the health service and against privatisation. Dr Hammond said he had been inspired to stand in his home constituency after touring the UK with a comedy show and asking audiences their aspirations for the UK’s health service. Conservative Jacob ReesMogg has been MP for North East Somerset since 2010, winning for the third time in 2017 with a 10,235-vote majority.

Drug dealer told to pay back £28,000 or get extra jail time A Keynsham man convicted of drug dealing has been ordered to hand over more than £28,000 by the courts. Police who raided Tyrone Royal’s home in Charlton Road in October 2016 seized £6,426 in cash as well as “high-value” designer items including baseball caps, sunglasses, bags, clothing and jewellery. Inside the 24-year-old’s vehicle, police found two blocks of cocaine weighing 41.09 grams and 7.01 grams and 268.18 grams of benzocaine – a substance used as an ingredient in some medications but which is commonly mixed with illicit drugs to reduce their purity. Royal was arrested and formally charged in September last year at Bristol Magistrates’ Court before being convicted of possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply on February 8 this year. He was subsequently jailed for five and a half years. Now Royal has been told he must pay a £28,236 confiscation order made by His Honour Judge Ambrose at Bristol Crown Court on August 17, including the cash and items seized from him. Royal’s benefit from crime was calculated to be £58,271.03, although he claimed credits paid to him came from legitimate business enterprises. If he fails to pay the £28,236 confiscation order in full, he will face a further six months in jail and will still have to pay what is owed.

Dr Kirstie Cogram, manager of Avon and Somerset Police’s Complex Crime Unit, said: “We are committed to seizing any assets that criminals have gained as a result of crime. It is not acceptable that criminals benefit from illegal activities and we will

relentlessly pursue them through the courts to ensure their money is taken. “By doing this we show criminals that they will not benefit from crime and hopefully deter others from entering a life of crime.”

Date is set for village post office’s return Saltford’s post office will reopen on Monday, September 24, Post Office Ltd has announced. The village’s branch has been closed since December following the resignation of the postmaster and a community campaign to reopen it inside Saltford Library was quickly launched. The branch will now be run as a community venture along with Saltford Library, which was officially handed over to Saltford Community Library Hub Ltd on July 21. Opening hours will be Monday 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm; Tuesday to Friday 10.30am to 2.30pm; and Saturday 9am to 12pm. A spokesperson said Post Office Ltd was keen to reopen the branch as soon as possible and that a consultation with residents is being held in the meantime. “The Post Office is inviting customers and interested parties to give their views on the plan. Post Office Ltd welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like considered. The consultation will close on September 20. Customers can share their views during the consultation online at postofficeviews.co.uk with the branch code 292511.” Submissions can also be emailed to comments@postoffice. co.uk, by post to Freepost YOUR COMMENTS, or by telephone 03452 66 01 15 or Textphone 03457 22 33 55. Saltford Community Association says the library is expected to be closed from September 10 to 21 to allow work on setting up the post office to be completed. The library will then open at the same times as the post office.

Outcry as busy footpaths are closed off Residents say they were given no warning that a developer was going to close off two well-used footpaths in Keynsham – and without establishing an alternative route. Walkers were surprised last month to find a public right of way leading from Broadmead Lane roundabout across fields to Teviot Road and an adjoining path leading to Saltford had been blocked by metal fencing. Crest Nicholson has begun work on creating a new housing estate of 250 homes after it was given the final go-ahead by B&NES Council last month. The paths cross the site and the developer says they need to be closed for safety reasons. However, Teviot Road resident and town councillor Bob Elcome says there has been a lack of communication from the developer and Bath and North East Somerset Council to warn people who use the paths and no

Bob Elcome at the junction of the two footpaths, where a fence has been installed just inside the gate alternative route had been publicised or displayed at the site. An order published by B&NES Council’s traffic management team and sent to Keynsham Town Council states the closure will come into effect on September 8 – weeks after the fences actually appeared. The order says the closure is necessary as work will be carried out on or near the paths and

is expected to be in effect for a maximum of five months, while a council spokesperson said the works could be completed as soon as December 12. The paths will be reopened once work is finished, the spokesperson added. But Mr Elcome said the sudden closure meant Crest Nicholson had fallen short of being a “good neighbour” to existing residents in Keynsham.

He said: “Both paths are closed off for a section and as there’s no warning you can walk most of the way and then are confronted by a cul de sac where you have no choice but to turn around and go back. People have been using the school playing fields, which is a workaround but there should be a publicised alternative route. “There was a notification from Crest on a post at the Broadmead roundabout entrance but this has now been dug up and removed. “There was no consultation with residents, which is not a requirement but would be nice. Crest have said they want to be good neighbours as they will be working here for three years. Those are nice words but that is all they are. With no notification and no alternative route, they are not trying to accommodate neighbours’ needs in any shape or form. “People are really upset –

near development the footpaths are used to get to Waitrose; there is no direct bus route into Bath or Bristol from this side of town so they’re used to access the main bus routes on Bath Road. People who work on the industrial estates use them to get to work and schoolchildren use them – this is not being a good neighbour.” A spokesperson for Crest Nicholson said: “The footpath at Bath Road, North Keynsham, is temporarily closed to safely facilitate site works. The safety of the local community is of paramount importance to us and the footpath will be closed until a safe route through the site has been established. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and are working with local stakeholders to investigate other options. Updates will be shared monthly on the site information board.” Commenting on how such closures are publicised, the B&NES spokesperson said:

“Notices of Intent for Keynsham are published in the Chew Valley Gazette, sent to the emergency services, the Public Rights of Way Team, the Bath Chamber of Commerce, local ward members and Keynsham Town Council. Information boards are erected on-site by the applicant/developer providing contact information. This is well above the statutory requirements.” They added: “An alternative diversion route is suggested running along the A4 Bath Road. The responsibility of this remains with the applicant to inform members of the public through information boards. The developer has considered an alternative route through their site but ruled this out for safety reasons and to avoid danger to members of the public.” The closure order is due to be on the agenda for Keynsham Town Council’s planning committee in September.

Petition urges Charlton Road traffic study Bath and North East Somerset Council is being urged to look into traffic-calming measures on Charlton Road “to save lives”. A petition has been launched calling on the local authority to commission a traffic study on the route, where road safety has reached a “particularly dangerous point”, according to those behind the campaign. The petition goes on to say that the road is seen as a shortcut from south Bristol to the east and north side of the city and to Bath and motorists often fail to stick to the speed limits. “The speed limit drops rap-

idly from national speed limit to 30mph but vehicle speeds often do not,” the petitioners add. “Closer to the town centre itself the speed limit drops again to a reasonable 20mph but it is incredibly rare to find vehicles travelling at or below this speed. In fact drivers who do travel at this speed often feel pressurised, or bullied, into going faster by impatient commuters who do not recognise the road for its residential use.” Anyone who wants to find out more about the petition can visit change.org – search for “Charlton Road Traffic Calming”.

Deadline approaching for footpath appeal Saltford Community Association is once again calling on anyone who enjoys walking in the countryside around the village to contribute to the fund that keeps the footpaths open. Government funding for 4.5km of permissive footpaths across local farmland was

withdrawn in 2013 and since then the community has raised £3,000 by October every year to preserve them, either through sponsorship or donations. Anyone who wishes to donate can visit www.saltfordhall.co.uk/ Permissive_paths.html or go to Saltford Hall.

Race is on to get 1,000 Santas running Organisers of this year’s Saltford Santa Dash are aiming to get more than 1,000 red-suited runners pounding the streets for charity in December. Registration for the annual event is opening on September 1, when people will be able to sign up via a relaunched website. Last year’s dash raised more than £12,000 for the Jessie May Trust, a sum organisers hope to reach again this year. This will be the sixth time the event has been held, with a five-mile course around Saltford for adults and over-12s and a mini dash for younger runners, which consists of two laps around the Saltford Sports Club field. All runners are given a Santa suit and a Santa Dash medal. Appeal to help Josh on way to recovery raises thousands Well-wishers have donated thousands of pounds in a matter of days to a Keynsham man who was seriously injured in a bike accident this summer. Out with friends to celebrate a birthday, Josh Wetmore, 23, fell from his bicycle into the path of an oncoming car in Charlton Road on July 28. He was rushed to Southmead Hospital’s intensive care unit where he has spent the past few weeks, and has now begun working towards his recovery at the hospital. Now Jack Neil, who went to Wellsway School with Josh and was out with him on the evening of the accident, has set up an online fundraising page to both

help his friend and say thank you to the hospital. Just three days after launching the page on Thursday, August 23, supporters had donated more than £3,000, with the final total to be split equally between Josh and the ITCU. Jack said: “Obviously Josh, who is a construction site manager, hasn’t been able to earn any money since this accident and will need support with his rehabilitation. We wanted to help him and give something back to the hospital. Southmead Hospital have been working wonders with Josh since he has been in hospital, with Josh making progress each day with their amazing care.”

Josh Wetmore was in a bike accident in July As well as the fundraising page – which can be found at https://www.gofundme. com/6062t7k – friends and

family are also organising a sponsored walk up Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons on September 30.

Commission confirms Saltford ward to New council ward boundaries have been drawn up across Bath and North East Somerset, with Saltford among those to see the biggest changes. The Electoral Commission has published its final recommendations for the area as part of a shake-up to tackle “electoral inequality”, balancing out the number of residents represented by each councillor sitting on B&NES Council. The Saltford ward will continue to be represented by two councillors but will expand to include Compton Dando, Corston and Newton St Loe under the plan. The commission’s report says it received a number of objections to the proposal from residents and Saltford Parish Council, with some objectors saying Compton Dando has stronger links with Keynsham or Whitchurch than Saltford. However, adding the village

combines distinct communities whilst minimising electoral variances. We therefore confirm, as final, our recommendation for Saltford,” the report concluded. Saltford Parish councillor and chair of the Keynsham and

Saltford Liberal Democrats Duncan Hounsell said: “These new Saltford ward boundaries represent a significant change. However, there are already links in place between villages such as the Church Benefice of Saltford,

grow in shake-up Corston and Newton St Loe. Saltford ward will continue to elect two B&NES councillors. The ideal representation would be to have one councillor from Saltford and one from the surrounding villages but that will be decided by who comes forward as candidates and the wishes of the electorate." Keynsham, meanwhile, will continue to be split into three wards – Keynsham East, North and South – with each represented by two councillors. One resident said the town would be over-represented on the council but the commission said the number of electors in the wards justifies the number of councillors. There were no objections to proposed adjustments to the boundary between Keynsham North and South so these should go ahead, the commission recommends. Across B&NES, the

commission recommends reducing the number of councillors by six to 59 and has proposed changes to 28 of the area’s 37 wards. Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the commission, said: “We are extremely grateful to people across Bath and North East Somerset who took part in the review. “The commission has looked at all the evidence that was put forward during the consultations. “We believe these recommendations deliver electoral fairness for voters as well as reflecting community ties throughout Bath and North East Somerset.” A draft order to implement the recommendations is expected in Parliament in the coming months, with the new electoral arrangements due to be in force for 2019’s council elections.

How can Kelston Road Park be improved? Residents are being asked for their views on how to improve Kelston Road Park in Keynsham. Bath and North East Somerset Council has £74,000 from S106 contributions from developers to use to kick start a programme of enhancements for the site, which currently has a play area, an area for ball games, a football pitch, a BMX track and teen shelters. Residents can complete consultation surveys online or download them to fill out by hand at www.bathnes.gov.uk/

services/sport-leisure-andparks/parks-green-spacesinformation/kelston-roadpark The closing date for responses is 5pm on Sunday, September 30. An initial design will then be created using the community’s views and presented at a local forum by the end of November. A more detailed design is then expected to be drawn up by the end of January, with work expected to be completed between February and May next year.

ON THE BEAT

‘ with PC James Evans

W

e have had some sad news in the team this month as PCSO Bob Hambridge has been taken ill. Due to this, and the fact that he was due to retire next month, we will not see him pounding the streets of Keynsham again. We wish him all the best with his recovery, after working in Keynsham as a PCSO for 11 years it’s about time he got to put his feet up. We have just lost our rural beat manager Gemma Lindow, who has taken a career break with an idea to change her line of work. We are currently awaiting a replacement. We also wish Gemma luck in the future. n This month some residents in Saltford have had to deal with an amount of antisocial behaviour as an elderly resident has been causing issues for his neighbours – something we might normally associate with the younger generation. We have been working closely with the antisocial behaviour team and have issued the man with a community protection warning (CPW). This is a significant step forward for us as this could lead to a community protection notice (CPN). This would carry a power of arrest and would see any breaches being heard in front of a court. n As the school holidays come and

go, like the blistering hot weather, I am pleased to report that we have not had a significant rise in reported antisocial behaviour. That being said, there have still been some reports of mindless vandalism. If you witness anything that you believe could be related please can I ask that you take note. Pay attention to group sizes, what people are wearing and anything else that makes an individual identifiable. I’m not asking anyone to put themselves in harm’s way but the information that you could gain either by jotting it down or recording it on a mobile phone could help us to identify offenders and bring them to justice. n I don’t suppose that I can avoid making reference to the fire that destroyed the bin room in Tintagel Close this summer. The fire was caused by embers that were believed to have been extinguished and then took hold, needing the fire brigade to attend and deal with it. Avon Fire and Rescue and our local schools deal with fire safety, but this incident could have easily been fatal. More than £40,000 worth of damage was caused.

Fire safety should be on our minds and for the parents among you, please talk to your children and make sure they are not carrying matches or lighters. One of the swings in the Memorial Park has been irreparably damaged by fire, which seems to be one of a few recent arson attempts at the site. n We have recently received complaints of youths riding motocross-style bikes around the Meadows estate, on and off the road, with no regard for the safety of others. If you know who these people are then please get in contact with us so that we can deal with them for this sort of behaviour. Or if you know the persons involved then please advise them that if they are caught committing these offences they are likely to be prosecuted and their bikes could be seized and destroyed. n You’ll have read about Tyrone Royal who was found guilty of drug dealing in Keynsham and is currently serving a prison sentence for this offence and has now been ordered to pay over £28,000 to the courts as part of a confiscation order. Failure to comply will result in an extended prison sentence and the funds still being sought. This is food for thought as this month we have again conducted a successful warrant where one male has been arrested and another dealt with voluntarily for the offences of being concerned in the supply of drugs. If you have any information about any incident then please get in contact either through the Avon and Somerset Constabulary website, which will lead you to the community pages, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Police arrest 133 in driving campaign Police have arrested 133 people in a summer crackdown on drinkand drug-driving. Following the arrests, 74 people have been charged while another 30 have been released under investigation. Operation Tonic ran from June 14 until July 15, during both the World Cup and the summer heatwave. Police used covert and high visibility patrols around the force area while neighbourhood police teams and cadets handed out leaflets to raise awareness of the road safety campaign. Around 370 tip-offs about drivers under the influence were received from the public, resulting in an arrest in 50 per cent of cases. Police say more than 374 people were breathalysed, with this figure expected to rise once all the data has been gathered. Supt Andy Williams, head of road safety in Avon and Somerset, said: “Our approach to Operation Tonic promotes education over prosecution where possible, with the ultimate aim to reduce deaths, serious injuries and crime related to drink and drug driving. “I’d like to thank the public for their support with this campaign and for sharing vital information with us. The reports received from local communities is an important part of identifying and tackling drink driving and our dedicated reporting line is always open.” People can call 999 if someone is currently driving under the influence. When the driver isn’t behind the wheel, people can text 07400 279101 with the word “drunk” and details of the car, location and driver.

EXAM RESULTS NEWS

Broadlands hails ‘high standards’ as pupils score strong set of GCSE results Staff at Broadlands Academy say they are “incredibly proud” of their students’ performance in this year’s GCSE exams. More than 60 per cent of the Year 11 pupils achieved a grade 4 or above in English Literature, while results in maths and science were also strong, said the school. One student even achieved straight grade 9s in biology, chemistry and physics. Star performer at the secondary was Olivia Burton, who discovered she had gained six grade 9s, two grade 8s and an A* when she opened her envelope on August 23, putting her among the country’s top achievers. Rather than restricting the subjects students can take up, Broadlands says it is growing its curriculum to offer young people more choices. Of the small group of pupils who took up an offer to study textiles as an additional

subject after school, 100 per cent of them achieved A* to B grades in their exam. Meanwhile, more than 70 per cent of students achieved a grade 4 or above in their computer science GCSE. A spokesperson said: “We are incredibly proud of these high standards. Well done to all Broadlands students and we look forward to pursuing academic and pastoral successes with our current students and new intake.”

EXAM RESULTS NEWS

Second set of results ‘puts IKB on the map’ IKB Academy says its second year of A-level results have placed the school firmly on the map as a learning institution. Sixth-formers at the academy achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in all A-level science and maths subjects as well as in the Level 3 BTEC qualifications. More than 60 per cent of students gained at least one A*, A or equivalent grade, while 48 per cent earned at least two of the top grades. A school spokesperson said: “In only our second year, these results place IKB firmly on the map as a learning institution where excellence is achieved not only in our specialist areas of science, technology, engineering and maths but also across the full range of subjects available through our collaborative provision across the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust.” Among the students heading off to university are Roland Whiteley, who achieved A*A*AA and will be studying engineering

Robbie Lovell with principal Debbie Gibbs at Oxford University, and Robbie Lovell, who achieved A*AB and will be studying maths at Cardiff. The spokesperson added: “We will miss our fantastic group of students, but know that the results they have gained at IKB along with their work placements have secured fantastic university places and apprenticeships and equipped them well for the next stage of their lives. We wish them all the very best of luck.”

Pupils rise to new GCSE challenge Students at Wellsway School took changes to the way GCSEs are assessed in their stride, with more than 80 per cent passing English and maths at grade 4 or above. Among the Year 11 pupils who collected their results this summer, 77 per cent gained five or more good passes, including English and maths. The Wellsway team were particularly pleased with improvements in attainment in science subjects. Thirteen per cent of chemistry students achieved a top grade 9 in their exams. Outstanding individual

successes among the year group included: Megan Sullivan (eight x 9s, two x 8s, one x 7); Samuel Their (seven x 9s, two x 8s, one x 6); Alyssa Hunt (six x 9s, two x 8s, two x 7s, one x 6); James Spincer (three x 9s, five x 8s, two x 7s, one x 6); Andrew Dubois (four x 9s, two x 8s, one x 7, two x 6s) and Nathan Coltart (four x 9s, four x 8s, one x 7, two x 6s). ‘Focus’ sees raft of top grades for Wellsway Wellsway School has praised the focus and determination of its Year 13 students who achieved a “significant” rise in A-level results. Eighty-one per cent of the grades awarded to students this summer were between A* and C. Principal Matthew Woodville said the school was extremely proud of the year group and their achievements. He added: “These results mean that this talented group of young people will go on to pursue their ambitions in the work place, at universities and colleges, or in apprenticeships and other training courses. We wish them every success for the future. “I would like to take this opportunity to formally acknowledge the focus and determination shown by the Year 13 students

to their studies and congratulate them on their success. “These excellent results are thanks to the hard work and commitment shown by staff at Wellsway School and across the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust’s Collaborative Post-16 Provision. Thank you to the families of our students and the wider Keynsham community for the support provided.” Among those celebrating some outstanding individual results at A level or their Level 3 equivalent were: Nathan Tozer 3 A*s; Tom Davies 2 A*s and 2 As; Beth Gledhill 1 A* and 3 As; Alex Pusey 1 A* and 3 As; James Gulliford 1 A* and 2 As; Freya Money 3 As; and Rebecca Masters, Jade Brown, Rose Ford and Rebecca Rogers triple Distinction*s.

n NEWS FROM 1ST KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Our Scouts need adults to share those vital #SkillsForLife

H

ow often do people say it’s so important to learn skills for life? The demand for Scouting in Keynsham continues to grow, not driven by the number of houses but by the activities that it offers to our young people and the opportunities it opens up to bring the Scouting movement’s #SkillsForLife strategy alive. Over the past 12 months we have reported on adventurous events such caving, camping, rafting and kayaking or creative events such as crafts, cooking and photography and readers have thanked 1st Keynsham Scouts for bringing the stories into their homes. So this month, rather than reporting on the young people, we want to share what it means for an adult to take part. This is the story of one of our leaders: It all started when a friend asked, “What are you doing next Saturday?” Without thinking I replied, “Nothing, why?” He asked if I knew how to strike a match. Of course I do! Four days later I found myself at 8.30am pulling on my welly boots sitting in the boot of my car thinking what a lovely, peaceful sunny morning it was as I looked over a field in the local countryside. Suddenly the peace was shattered – my friend, a few other adults and around 20 Cub Scouts appeared over the horizon. Split into small groups, I was responsible – yes, you guessed it – for building and lighting a small fire. I thought every child knew how to strike a match but clearly not. I thought every child knew that damp wood did not burn easily – clearly not! I thought I would be bored – clearly not! Where did the hours go? They flew by with lots of laughs, lots of “show me agains”, “what ifs” and “I’ve done its!” Sitting in a warm, cosy pub at the end of the day, I knew I had earned that drink. It was time to reflect: if I had not said I was free what would I have done today? If I had not shared my skills, how

It’s curtain up for Keyford Dancing School! THE KEYFORD DANCING SCHOOL

would those young Scouts have learned? There was a genuine warm glow that I had achieved something, stepped out of my comfort zone, done something different and had fun. I bet you can guess the ending. A few drinks later, followed by a Chinese, my friend and those other adults had persuaded me to help again next week, only for an hour and a half, this time bike maintenance. “What do I know about bikes,” I said. “But it could be fun.” Keynsham Scouts continue to build on their success and are seeking any person over 18 who would like to volunteer and share skills and experiences. There are roles not directly with young people such as admin or IT, or it could be right in there working with the young people, leading the way. The list is endless. If you have the ability to step outside of your comfort zone, do something different and share you will feel that same warm glow – I promise. #Skillsforlife – it’s important that we share them, so why not start today? n NEWS GPs among best in country, say patients

Families supported by the Jessie May Trust enjoyed a fun day at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park in Keynsham on Friday, August 24, where Jessie May nurses helped them take part in a wide variety of activities. Feedback from almost 3,000 patients has put GPs across Bath and North East Somerset among the best in the country. Out of the 2,828 residents who were questioned as part of the latest GP Patient Survey, 91 per cent said the overall experience at their GP surgery was “good” – the fourth highest score in the country. It was also higher than the national average of 84 per cent. Dr Ian Orpen, clinical chair of Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “GPs are under more pressure than ever before, but remain fully committed to providing patients with the service they deserve. “It is very positive to hear that patients feel they are receiving a good service, not just from GPs but also from our nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals that form part of the practice team.”

with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

This scene shows a familiar Keynsham location that now looks very different. The photograph is undated but was probably taken in the early part of the last century. Dapps Hill Bridge, then often known as Crox Bottom Bridge, is easy to recognise. Beyond it are the three cottages backing onto the River Chew, which survive, and on top of the hill the Keynsham Workhouse, now the site of the health centre. The trees along the riverbank were at the bottom of the garden of The Pynes (demolished in 1967) and beyond them can be seen the chimney of the gas works.

Duncan goes an extra few miles for Operation Smile A Keynsham man is helping to bring smiles to three children’s faces – by funding life-changing surgery for them. Duncan Tyler completed the tough Jurassic Coast marathon earlier this year, racing along coastal paths and climbing more than 1,000 metres. In the process, he raised £500 for Operation Smile, enabling the charity to fund cleft lip and cleft palate surgery for three children in some of the world’s poorest countries. Duncan, who is a branch strategy manager at a major bank and a member of the Keynsham Wombles, said he runs regularly but had never attempted such an extreme – or hilly – challenge before. Thanking everyone who had sponsored him, he said: “I chose to support Operation Smile after seeing a charity poster of a child with a cleft. “It made me think how lucky we are in the UK to have access to medical treatment and I felt I wanted to make a difference to those less fortunate in other countries. “I found Operation Smile online and was really impressed with what they do and felt through supporting them I could help directly.” Operation Smile UK community partnerships and

events manager Chris Williams, a former Wellsway School pupil, said: “Our fundraisers are instrumental to our work – without them, we would not be able to provide free surgeries for so many children in need around the world. “Those born with a cleft condition in developing countries face not only physical complications, but are often subjected to severe social stigma and isolation. “Duncan is helping us reach these children and through surgery, helping them to live the life they deserve. We are in awe of his challenge and incredibly grateful for his efforts, both in fundraising and running along that iconic coast! “We are thrilled to show him the lasting impact his challenge had to three children living with an untreated cleft condition overseas!” Find out more about Operation Smile at www. operationsmile.org.uk

Little litter pickers give park clean-up Children have been leading the battle against litter during the summer holidays, joining Keynsham Wombles on a number of clean-ups in the Memorial Park. First up were Keynsham Cubs, who tackled rubbish under the park’s bushes, having fun and making a big difference to the area. Next was a children’s litter pick for smaller Wombles on August 23, which was followed by a picnic in the Memorial Park playground. Also out and about over the summer were staff from Santander, who held a litterpick one day after work, and members of St Francis Church who braved wind and rain to tidy up the town. The next date in the Wombles’ diary is September 15

when the group will be holding a litter pick from 9am to 11am starting from the car park near the Lock Keeper pub to coincide with World Clean Up Day. The next clean-up will target the approach roads into Keynsham, including the A4 from Pixash Lane, the Wellsway, Charlton Road, Bristol Road and Willsbridge Road on October 20. Pinch-point junction to get extra lane

Work to tackle congestion at a traffic hotspot south of Keynsham is getting under way at the start of September. An £890,000 scheme to add a new lane at the Bences Garage junction at Marksbury, where the A39 connects with the A368, aims to reduce journey times around the area. Thousands of vehicles pass through the three-armed junction every day, creating what Bath and North East Somerset Council describes as a “major traffic pinch-point”. The plan, which was announced earlier this year, includes widening the A39 southbound carriageway to two lanes, with separate lanes for ahead and left-turn traffic, enabling the traffic lights to stay green for longer, which is expected to reduce queue lengths. The scheme will have benefits for the wider area, said Professor Steve West, chair

West of England Mayor Tim Bowles and Bath & North East Somerset Council leader Tim Warren of the West of England LEP, who added: “To realise our ambitious plans for growth in the region, we have to invest in

our transport infrastructure. The improvements at this junction will help to support economic growth in Keynsham, Bath, the

Somer Valley and further afield.” The roadworks follow the completion of improvements to the Two-Headed Man junction further north on the A39 at the end of last year. To help fund the Bences Garage junction works B&NES Council secured £700,000 towards the cost of the £890,000 scheme from the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) through the Local Growth Fund (LGF), administered by the West of England Combined Authority. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles added: “I am committed to getting people moving in our region, improving existing transport routes to support new homes and access to employment. WECA and the LEP have already allocated millions to kick-start improving our busiest routes – including rail, road, cycling and walking.” The project is scheduled for completion later in the autumn.

LETTERS Trip down Memory Lane – by coach! Thanks for your help in organising our school reunion of the 50th anniversary of our “speech day” in 1968. In 1963 when I started at Keynsham Grammar School I was “bussed in” from Whitchurch in one of Len Munden’s Crown Coaches, often with Len himself driving. Len Munden was the locally (and nationally) famous one-armed coach driver. Often his son Simon would come along for the ride. Our reunion on October 26 starts at Keynsham Rugby Club and we then will travel by coach the short distance to the school. I phoned Crown Coaches to inquire about hiring a coach and the phone was answered by... Simon! After chatting about the “good old days” and the school run for 20 minutes or so I explained why I wanted to hire a coach and Simon then kindly offered to do it for nothing. Bill Payter

THE BIG PICTURE Film review with Harrison Thorne

After the show-stopping Infinity War, does Ant-Man and the Wasp make an impact? Ant-Man and the Wasp (12A) arvel fans were given a real treat with Infinity War earlier this year, a huge ensemble cast, a high-stakes story and the feeling of a climactic point within the series satisfied fans across the globe. All of this anticipation undermined the marketing for Ant-Man and the Wasp and so audiences went into the movie with little anticipation or expectation. What we got was a well-directed, amazingly acted and surprisingly funny superhero

M

flick that was a blast to watch, albeit a little forgettable after what happened only a few months ago. The film picks up a narrative smartly following the events of 2016’s Avengers: Civil War which finds Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) under home arrest following his capture, leaving Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) on the run from the law. Rudd is just as charismatic and amusing as in previous instalments,

proving that Marvel can make any character, big or small, as interesting and likeable as the top-tier Avengers. Evangeline Lilly gets more room to shine here than in the previous instalment with her character Hope taking on the mantle of the Wasp. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer deliver truly excellent performances despite their limited scenes. The real standout for me was Hannah John-Kamen as Ava/Ghost, who after side roles in Tomb Raider

and Ready Player One gets to show off her talents as the primary antagonist of this movie. I am genuinely excited to see what she does next. The movie does suffer slightly from an underwhelming third act, in which the resolution of the conflict feels inconclusive and a little too convenient. The post-credit scenes, however, are some of Marvel’s best, they are most definitely not to be missed.  4/5

O

ur “Knit to Remember” project is now beginning to take shape. Over the last few weeks our small team of ladies have been busy working on our Poppy Cascade. Hundreds of knitted poppies have been stitched onto netting, which will eventually be draped down the outside of St John’s Church tower to form the main structure of the Poppy Cascade and will be a key focal point leading up to this year’s Remembrance Day service.. The poppy workshops have been most enjoyable and a great way of making new friends and renewing old acquaintances. We have even had two ladies who were

Thousands of poppies knitted by volunteers are now being attached to netting to form the cascade at school together and hadn’t seen each other for several years. Two of our volunteers also travel over from Kingswood and Oldland Common especially to help us. We still have a long way to go to complete the project and estimate there are well over 9,000 poppies still to be attached to the netting. Further workshops have been arranged for Tuesday, September 11, and Monday, September 17, both taking place at Keynsham Royal British Legion in the lounge area from 10am to 1pm. If anyone would like to come along and join us or to drop off their knitted poppies, they will be made very welcome and tea and coffee provided.

Children remembered at annual service Families who have lost a child are invited to join the annual Candles of Remembrance Service in Keynsham. The service takes place at Victoria Methodist Church in the High Street on Sunday, September 16, and includes poems, music, prayers and songs. Families can include their child’s name on a roll call that will be read out during the service, which aims to offer the chance to remember youngsters

who have died whether it was a recent loss or many years ago. All are welcome, including children, parents, grandparents and friends, and those attending can light a candle, write a message or say a prayer. After, refreshments are served in the hall. The service starts at 3pm and for more information and to include your child’s name on the roll call, contact Jeff Sawyer on 0117 975 4071 or email jeffsawyer@blueyonder.co.uk

Rotarians lend trust helping hand Members of Keynsham’s Rotary Club stepped in to give “Big Ted” a big hand, helping to collect donations at this summer’s South Gloucestershire Show. The Jessie May Trust was named as the event’s nominated charity and the team contacted the Rotarians to see if they could help out on the day. A number of members volunteered and spent the day at the showground in Westerleigh on August 4 selling raffle tickets to raise vital cash for the charity, which supports children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Overall, the event raised just over £1,000 for the charity – find out more about its work at jessiemay.org.uk Pictured are Helen Mackie, Jessie May community and events officer, and Keynsham Rotary Club president Roger Spooner with Helen Spooner and Lucy Hazel sitting with Big Ted.

Another chance to catch flood musical There will be another chance to see a musical tribute to the events of 1968 when the Chew Valley experienced devastating flooding. Performers from Keynsham will once again be taking to the stage to perform Bridge Across the Flood, a show created in 1996 to commemorate the way communities in Keynsham came together following the flood. It was revived by local singers and musicians this summer and performed at Keynsham Music Festival. As the 50th anniversary commemorations continue, the performers are taking Bridge Across the Flood to Chew Magna on Saturday, October 6, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The event, at St Andrew’s Church Hall, will also include the debut screening of a new film produced to capture this year’s Great Flood commemorations in communities around the Chew Valley. The film also features unseen footage from 1968 and will premier before the interval. Tickets, priced £8, are available from keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk Chew Magna is also hosting its anual resilience day on the same day from 10am, featuring practices and a conference about flood risk today and what happens in emergency situations. Contact Councillor Lynne Easton at lynne@eastonpreecepreece. net or call 07810 810847. ith a lot of the participants never having heard of the Eastwood Farm Nature Reserve run by Bristol City Council, it was with trepidation that 24 walkers met at Beeses' Tea Garden car park. But Jane Humphreys, walk leader, had done her homework, and we were treated to a very slow amble in glorious sunshine alongside the River Avon. Although the walk was only about 1.5 miles long there was plenty to see. The hot summer had taken its toll and the two small ponds were almost devoid of water. It was possibly the most social walk of the year, which was appreciated by the new members who had joined us.

Dates for the diary

Sunday, September 2 Meeting at Keynsham Station at 9.15am to catch the 9.30am train to Bradford on Avon to join the town’s popular walking festival. They have arranged a walk specially for us, and this will be a four-mile jaunt through the lovely countryside

that surrounds this picturesque town. There will be ample time to explore all the pubs, cafes and alleyways after the walk, before we head back to Keynsham on the 4pm train. The cost is £10 per person and includes discounted rail travel and entry to the festival. All welcome. Please let Dave know on

Friday, September 7 A fun social skittles evening at the Conservative Club, 22 High Street, starting at 7.30pm – skittle skills not required! Participants will also get the opportunity to select the 12 photographs that will be used in the 2019 Keynsham Walkers are Welcome calendar. Everybody is welcome again. Wednesday, October 10 AGM at the Manor House Hotel starting at 6pm. All members of Keynsham Walkers are Welcome invited to attend.

Church’s new loo at centre of celebration Villagers in Burnett have celebrated the result of years of fundraising – with the opening of a new toilet at the local church. St Michael’s Church is the village’s only communal building and the new loo and kitchenette means there are now more facilities available to bring the community together. The official opening was on August 19, when Bishop Ruth Worsley held a short service before cutting the ribbon. Continuing the celebrations, an afternoon tea was held at Whitson Lodge where visitors also enjoyed a raffle and bric-abrac and book stalls. Proceeds from the afternoon went to the SMILE project (St Michael’s

Inaugural Loo Experience), which was set up in 2016 by Nick Milton, Tom Peryer, David and Rosemary Turner and Dusty Walker to raise funds for the new facilities. Fundraising over the years has included cream teas, a talk on the secrets of wartime Bath, a “Christmas Cracker” evening and a concert by the Bath Gospel choir, as well as donations and grants totalling £78,000. Church warden Rosemary Turner said: “We are immensely grateful for all the support and thrilled to have the facilities of a WC and kitchenette in our church, which being the only communal building in the village is very central to the community.”

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Keynsham export that travelled the world Keynsham Lime

At the bottom of Chandag Road, Keynsham, cut into the stone gateposts of No 2 is the name Limefield. One hundred and fifty yards behind are the houses of Limekilns Close, built in about 2001. These names, along with an advertising board on the Wellsway, are now the only obvious reminders of what was a substantial Keynsham business for several hundred years: the production of lime.

The Keeling’s Lime Kiln building in 1965, above; the kiln was fed by cable-hauled tipper wagons on a 2ft gauge tramway, below Many older buildings in the area are constructed of blue lias, a type of limestone that was quarried locally. Where the beds of lias were either too thin or poor quality for building stone, they provided a raw material that could be burnt to produce lime. Parts of Keynsham, particularly on the eastern side of the Chew Valley, had large quantities of this stone close to the surface. Lime had two principal uses: in agriculture and for making mortar for building. Demand for agricultural lime increased from the 18th century when interest in new farming methods and increasing crop yields became fashionable. For building, lime has been used as an ingredient of mortar since Roman times, and lime kilns were built wherever suitable raw materials existed. In Keynsham,

the local lime was found to have unusually good hydraulic properties, which meant it would set in wet conditions or under water. For this reason lime-making became well established here and the shallow quarries, with their kilns, were known as lime fields. In 1771 a plot of land between the River Chew and the Burnett Road (now the Wellsway) including an area described as the Lime Kiln Ground, which was in the vicinity of Rookhill, changed hands. So by this date, lime burning was obviously well-established. A century later lime was being crushed at South Mill (later Albert Mill) and an account exists of 21 lime kilns in the Dapps Hill area. Over the years other areas were exploited, including fields as far out as Manor Road. In more modern times the

and the kilns were the last of their type in the West Country, working until the 1970s. The site then lay derelict for some years until it was sold for residential development and the last remains of an industry that is said to have exported its products around the world disappeared. We are not aware of the structure of any lime kiln remaining in Keynsham.

This month’s history walk – Mills and Industry

firm of Oliver Keeling became established, with its main quarry and site between the Wellsway and Chandag Road. Lime-burning was now a more mechanized process

A reminder that on Sunday, September 9, Richard Dyson from the society will be leading a guided walk around Keynsham on the theme of “The General History of the Town Centre”. Meet by the café in the Memorial Park for a start at 2.30pm. All are welcome and there is no charge.

Villagers launch book exchange in a box Villagers have come up with a novel use for their old phone box – converting it to a book exchange. Residents in Corston purchased the red phone box from BT for £1 and are celebrating a fresh chapter for the landmark. The box dates from 1957 and has been completely renovated and reglazed with a grant from the parish council, funded partly by Bristol Airport. Volunteers have been hard at work stripping off the paint, giving it a new coat of bright red and replacing all 72 of its acrylic panels with toughened glass. Shelves inside the kiosk have now been filled with books

for adults and children, which people are invited to swap for books they have finished. The Corston Book Exchange was officially opened by resident and author Julie Miller, whose novel Rainbows Have Echoes was published in June. Many people attended the launch, where Julie also signed copies of her book for visitors. A video of the event can be seen at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=jx6pRDqT-jI&t=27s Thousands of disused phone boxes have found new lives in community hands across the country – from potentially lifesaving defibrillator points to mini coffee shops and even a tiny nightclub.

Insight into a century of WI in Keynsham

A

t our meeting on Monday, July 30, Keynsham WI were pleased to welcome Brian Vowles from the Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society. Brian gave an interesting talk about the introduction of the WI to Keynsham. The first group was formed in 1918 and had 42 members and in 1921 a new hall was built for them near the bottom of Bath Hill. The hall was a used army hut from a camp at Sutton Veney. Many events were held there, including baby shows, plays and Christmas parties. There was also an annual party held there by Keynsham Town Band. During the war in 1942 the hall was used as a British Restaurant where people could go to buy a two-course meal without using their war rations. The restaurant closed in 1946 and in 1950 the council wanted to pull down the hut to make way for a war memorial. In the end they let it

stay and built the war memorial at the park gates. Coronation dances were held in the hut in 1953 before it was eventually pulled down and relocated when the Memorial Park was laid out. Brian then gave us a presentation about the Great Flood in 1968, showing us many pictures from the event, which was of particular interest to several of our members who were living in Keynsham at the time. One can even remember being rescued from a bedroom window on a ladder. Keynsham WI continues to thrive and some of our members have taken up walking netball as part of a WI initiative to “Get Moving”. At our next meeting we are holding a skittles evening at The British Legion skittles alley. Some of our craft group members have also been busy knitting and crocheting poppies for the poppy cascade at St John’s Church.

Sing in harmony with choir’s free course Women who want to learn to sing can do so with the help of an award-winning choir, which is hosting a free course this autumn. Black Sheep Harmony Ladies Chorus, which performs barbershop-style songs, is offering to teach women of all singing abilities good technique in a fun atmosphere over three free sessions. Music director David Proud said by the end of the Learn to Sing in Harmony course, participants will be able to perform a special arrangement of a Christmas song and added: “We have a record of being able

to teach people to sing well. Many who have been on similar courses have enjoyed themselves so much that they wish to apply for membership at the end of it. “However, the only reward we seek is the satisfaction of seeing people enjoying learning new skills which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.” The course will start on Thursday, October 4, and will be held over three successive Thursday evenings from 7.15pm to 9pm at Cadbury Heath Village Hall. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult fiction

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell This is an epic tale made famous by the 1939 film starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable – written in 1936 it actually won a Pulitzer Prize. The film sticks very closely to the book and is set against the dramatic American Civil War. Margaret Mitchell describes the “old South” in great detail – a lost world of large plantation houses, balls, chivalrous gentleman. We meet the beautiful but slightly spoilt Scarlett O’Hara and follow her journey through the terrible wartime period and the dashing, charismatic Rhett Butler. This is, of course, an unforgettable love story, but it’s also a story about change and the effects it has on families. A book written nearly 70 years ago still has a resonance today as Scarlett must be one of the most famous feminists in literature – well written and an excellent, evocative read. A Patient Fury by Sarah Ward This is the third book in the series that features DI Francis Sadler and DC Connie Childs. It’s a crime mystery set in the wilds of Derbyshire, where a fire at a house turns to arson and murder when three bodies are discovered. DCI Sadler and DC Childs are woken from their beds and sent to the

scene at Cross Farm Lane. What is initially thought to be a murdersuicide turns into a more complex plot that also uncovers the mystery of a long-lost family member and long-forgotten secrets. DC Childs is determined to find the killer but this begins to impact her health and her career. This is a solid crime mystery and well written, as usual, by Sarah Ward. Both DCI Sadler and DC Childs are great characters and the story has a few twists and turns to keep you gripped.

aquatic creature that appears to be held prisoner and is being tortured. From there they start a very beautiful relationship based on signing. Elisa and the creature fall in love but, of course, as with all fairy tales, there are villains who want to destroy the creature. There are also heroes who try to help the couple – Elisa’s kind neighbour Giles and her co-worker Zelda. The story is very elegantly told and well- deserving of the Oscars that it won. It is a slightly old-fashioned story but that makes it all the more charming and Sally Hawkins as Elisa is excellent.

Church celebrates coffee room’s 20th A Keynsham church held a birthday celebration with a difference – marking its coffee room’s 20th birthday. Victoria Methodist Church opened its new glass doors on July 6, 1998, to welcome in passing shoppers for a hot drink. The first morning saw just five people join the volunteers but slowly the numbers grew and the church had to provide ten tables instead of the initial four. A spokesperson said: “After a few months the Shoppers Service started on a Thursday and initially five folk huddled together round the organ for the

September, 2018 worship – we did not want to disturb those drinking coffee! How times have changed, as we can now prepare anything up to a hundred drinks on some days and Shoppers’ Service has become a feature of worship in the High Street.” The milestone was celebrated at a service led by minister Jane Wilson, where members also lit a candle for those who worked in the coffee room over the years but have since passed away.

n NEWS

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Mike Burke, missioner and team vicar with Keynsham Team Ministry It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change. Charles Darwin

I

t is easy to feel unsettled concerning change. We live in a world and in a community that is undergoing a process of accelerated change. Whether it is global warming, technological advances or Brexit, there appears to be huge uncertainty about the future direction of change that we are all facing. As a result, it is easy to wish that it would all go away and everything return to the days when we recognised the world around us, knew the rules and how things worked. We may not say:

“Stop the world; I want to get off”, yet many of us might feel that way at times. Change can feel threatening at a local level as well. We see new housing springing up in familiar open fields, the High Street looking very different and constant concerns about traffic congestions and parking. Change has to be managed carefully in order for communities to flourish; however, it can be viewed through a positive lens, bringing about new possibilities, new energy and new ideas. Change is an aspect of growth. Cardinal John Newman famously said: “To live is to grow. To grow is to change and to grow fully is to have changed often.” As human beings we rely upon change in order to grow and to live – the very cells in our bodies are constantly dying and being replaced just to keep us alive. The same can be true for human communities. They are always being renewed and changed in order to live and to develop. One of my regular irritations is meaningless “management speak” – the kind of pointless

STORAGE

phrases that provide a commentary on the changes facing us in life. For instance, the way in which, the phrase “moving forward” is slotted into descriptions about change, as if we have the choice to go backward instead. The last time I looked, the hands on my clock tended to travel forward, not backwards. Time passes, things move on, change happens. The question is: how do we manage that change to ensure that it benefits the most people and safeguards our environment? Jesus spoke a lot about change and growth. He used the image of a vine to talk about community and how it was important to remain connected with each other and with Him. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If someone remains in me and I in them, they will bear much fruit.” (John 15:5). Being fruitful is about flourishing during times of change – discovering that we are part of something bigger than ourselves in which we all matter and through which we can all contribute positively. Sometimes, change can be for the better.

Display focuses on international issue Members of a Keynsham church are helping to raise awareness of an issue that affects millions of people around the globe but which often goes unrecognised. A display will be on show in Keynsham Library from September 4 to 15 focusing on the estimated 40 million people worldwide who are “internally displaced” – people who have been forced from their homes but, unlike refugees, have not crossed a border into another country. The exhibition, produced by Christian Aid, focuses on the issue and its causes, including conflict and natural disasters such as flooding. A spokesperson for the Keynsham group said agreements being drawn up by the UN would help refugees but not those displaced within their own country’s borders. He said: “Why not pop into the library and acquaint yourself with the issues surrounding this mainly unrecognised but large international problem.”

Coaching sessions for all ages are on offer at Saltford Tennis Club book onto any coaching session, including private sessions, call Dillon Slade on 01225 384247 or email tennis@teambath.com. We are very excited that we have been awarded a National Lottery grant to support a new coaching programme for Saltford Primary School and Wellsway School. The programme will begin in the week commencing September 10 and aims to intro-

duce children and adults to tennis and provide them with a term of coaching to enable them to learn the game. Atrocious weather ended a late fightback from Bristol Badgers who went down 12-8 to the East London Latin Boys in the British Baseball Federation AA final on August 26, writes our correspondent. Trailing 11-0 to the London team early in the game, centre fielder Jamie Prout led the comeback getting on base in the bottom of the third innings. His hit proved the spark as the Bristol team scored four runs as the conditions worsened at the national baseball complex at Farnham Park near Slough. A Par Eliasson fly ball drove in two runs on a fielding error before Jamie Prout scored on a passed ball to make it 12-7. The Badgers scored one more run before the rain made conditions impossible and the game was called. Badgers manager Tom Hollies said: “We have had a fabulous year and although we didn’t quite pull off the final victory, every single member of the team has produced when needed.”

Memorial game in busy round of fixtures As the end of the bowling season approaches the activity on the green at Keynsham Bowling Club becomes even more intense, writes our correspondent. In addition to the league and friendly matches being played, plus the club competitions, there have been a number of one-off fixtures. At the start of the month was the annual fixture against our local rivals from Frys playing for the Alsop Trophy, which Keynsham lost by 77 shots to 66. We look forward to gaining our revenge in a year’s time! This was followed by a club competition the Tom Pells Cup, played between mixed teams of four for a trophy given in memory of Tom by his widow Lyn. The picture shows the winning team, Tony Bevan, Graham Cavill, Jan Iles and Lyn Dorey, receiving the cup from Lyn’s granddaughters Jessica, Stella and Hattie. Another Sunday was taken up

Tony Bevan, Graham Cavill, Jan Iles and Lyn Dorey receive the Tom Pells Cup from his granddaughters Jessica, Hattie and Stella with the club hosting two semifinals: firstly the Wedmore Plate when Weston Bath comfortably beat Yatton, followed in the afternoon when Bristol closely defeated Bath in the Turnbull Cup. A fixture that club members look forward to is the match between the ladies and gents of the club and the fact that six

rinks are played necessitating 24 ladies shows the depth of club membership. While the men won it would be inappropriate for me to quote the final score, but the ladies look forward to an improved performance next year. As is traditional the gents carried out the catering duties for the day and treated everyone to a fine tea.

Towards the end of the month the club hosted the ladies’ county fixture between Somerset and Berkshire when the home side won five of the six rinks with the shots totalling 133 to 106. The recent change in weather has resulted in the green receiving a good watering and it promises to bowl well for the last month of the season.

HockeyFest offers fun on and off pitch Keynsham Hockey Club will host their annual memorial tournament, on Sunday, September 2, in aid of the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research, writes our correspondent. The event is held in memory of former club members James Clifford and Kim Baptist, with the day’s proceeds being split between the charities, chosen by their families. This year also sees the club run its very first HockeyFest event, alongside the tournament. England Hockey explains: “HockeyFest is where clubs across the country open their doors to thousands of new and current players, to showcase the fun and social side of their hockey club." Keynsham is also one of 13 clubs to have been selected by England Hockey as a Super HockeyFest event. Louisa Pillinger, Keynsham Hockey events coordinator, said: “We are honoured to have been chosen, and would like to

thank England Hockey for their support. “As a club, we continually strive to bring hockey to a wider community, and encourage more people to play.” Everyone who attends can expect to join in – or watch – some mixed seven-a-side games for juniors and seniors. There will also be plenty going on off the pitch too, with skill competitions, a bouncy castle, barbecue, sweet and refreshment stalls and a big raffle. Participants will also receive a free HockeyFest goodie bag. “We would very much like to welcome current or potential new players to join us for this event,” said club chair Richard May. “New players should come dressed for sport, ideally with shinpads if you have them. We have plenty of sticks you can borrow for the day.” For further information, or to join our club, please contact events@keynshamhockey.club

Frys’ promotion hopes dashed by Ardagh On August 16 Frys Bowling Club travelled to Bristol and District League second-placed Ardagh needing a points advantage to keep promotion hopes alive. Ardagh got the early advantage, but rink one were soon able to pull the away team back into the game. Rink three was the opposite with the home side pulling away. Rink two was a much tighter game, with Frys

holding the advantage into the closing ends. With the game finely poised with both teams winning a rink, it came down to the final end. Frys were unable to get the shots they required in the last end, dropping eight points and bringing an end to Frys’ promotion hopes. Scores: Rink 1: 20-10; Rink 2: 14-16; Rink 3: 8-20; Frys 42-46 Ardagh (2-8).

Strong Keynsham Keynsham Town Ladies have approached the new football season with optimism, writes our correspondent. Having achieved third place last season, they aim to show further improvement in the renamed FA Women’s National League. The preseason run-in saw the team unbeaten with wins away at Cardiff City (7-2), home to Birmingham & West Midlands (2-1), away at Exeter City (5-2) and finally away at Abergavenny (2-0). Following those friendly games and six weeks of hard fitness training under new fitness coach, Corinne Yorston, the team played their first league match last Sunday with an emphatic 9-0 win over newly promoted Devon-based Buckland Athletic, who had not lost a League game in three seasons. Last season’s top scorer Kerry Bartlett-opened her account with a five-goal haul with fellow strike partner Justine Lorton netting a hat trick.

Corinne Yorston added another in a good all-round performance, especially in the second half. Keynsham’s next home fixture is on Sunday, September 16, when they entertain another newly promoted side, Chesham United. Sandwiched in between are two away trips to local rivals Larkhall, first in the League Cup and secondly in the League, plus another local derby away at Brislington for an evening kick-off on Thursday, September 13. The month ends with probably the toughest home match of the season against last year’s runners-up, Southampton. Both manager Barrie Newton, now in his 25th year at the club, and new chairman Mark Ranahan believe it is the strongest squad that Keynsham has had for several years. The club managed to retain all but two of last season’s players and recruited six quality additions. Joining from Bristol City was

Ladies squad optimistic for new season centre back Katie Jones, Kirsten Rendall, another defender arrived from St Nicholas, the experienced Corinne Yorston, a player with several England caps who moved from Oxford Utd, as did pacy winger Ellis Hillman with Laura Williams rejoining after several seasons at Cardiff City. Last, but not least, talented goal keeper Charlotte Haynes came from Trowbridge Town after playing experience with Yeovil Town. These additions give great strength and depth and also give a better balance to the side, as three of the signings, Rendall, Williams and Yorston, are all left-footed players, a luxury that Newton says he has not had for many years. On top of this, KTLFC has a new smart playing kit sponsored by Slater Investments, still in their traditional green colour but in a new dynamic style from Cassell Sports.

Growing crowds see mixed start to year Photo: Bob Mewse

KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field It has been an inconsistent start to Keynsham Town’s quest for promotion from the Toolstation Western League Division One after missing out so narrowly last season. The season began with the return of Friday Night Football to Crown Fields, and what a great night it was! After a scrappy first 40 minutes, Craig Wilson headed home a corner to score at a crucial time. After the break, Bishop Sutton were put to the sword, with fine efforts by Matt Brown, Adey Harvey and Nathan Curnock as well as a repeat header by Wilson sealing an emphatic 5-0 victory. Club secretary Julian French said: “All this happened in front of our biggest home league attendance for years of 265, and hopefully the lads’ performance will have encouraged some new fans to become regulars.” However, Keynsham came back down to earth with a bump four days later, as another excellent crowd of 178 at Crown Fields saw Cheddar win 3-0. The Ks’ defensive frailties of last season returned, and the visitors were clinical when their chances presented themselves. Next up was the Ks’ first game on the road to Wembley, with a tough-looking FA Cup visit to South West Peninsula League side Bodmin Town. The game was a thrilling spectacle for the excellent Ks travelling support, as their heroes showed tremendous character in fighting back from 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 down to snatch a well-earned 4-4 draw. Cam Shorney, Matt Brown, Lee Pitman and Adey Harvey popped up with four good team goals, and but for a very harsh handball decision by the referee in the dying minutes, substitute Kyle Box could have nicked a famous

Kyle Box scored the Ks’ only goal as they took on Bodmin Town at the Crown Fields

Home games The Ks’ forthcoming home games at Crown Fields are as follows:

Saturday, September 1 Sidmouth Town (FA Vase) 3pm kick-off

Saturday, September 29 Longwell Green Sports (League) 3pm kick-off

victory! Unfortunately the Ks could not match their Cornish rivals in the replay at Crown Fields, having to play for over an hour with only 10 men after Craig Wilson was shown a red card. The hosts eased into a 3-0 lead, and although Keynsham created plenty of chances in the second half, they only had a late deflected effort by Kyle Box to show for their efforts. The following Saturday saw a return to league action and a game of two halves from a performance point of view at home to Welton Rovers. The first 45 minutes were pretty awful from the Ks, although Welton only had a stunning free-kick to

show for it at the break. Things got worse when Scott Saunders was shown a harsh red card less than 10 minutes into the second half. However, the players rallied and showed true spirit, with Lee Pitman scoring a deserved equaliser. Despite two Welton players also heading for an early shower, this was in all honesty probably a point gained for the Ks. However, poor defending again cost Keynsham dear when Wells City visited on August 21 and ran out 3-1 victors. Eighteenyear-old James Ollis, who is wellknown to Ks regulars, marked his second debut for his home town club with a superb goal only two

minutes into his loan spell from National League side Bath City. One high spot for the club from this game, though, was that in addition to Ollis, fellow 18-year-old George Rooke was making his second First Team start and another teenager, Gianni Porcaro, came off the bench. Attendances at Crown Fields have increased again this season, with over 800 spectators through the turnstiles in five home games so far. Julian French said: “Having nearly doubled our average league attendance from 65 (2015-16) to 126 last season, it is great to see more of the Keynsham community getting behind the club.” Keep an eye out for an update on how the season is progressing in the October issue of Keynshamvoice!
