Plea to slash speed limit on rat run route

A 60mph speed limit on a road between Keynsham and Saltford is putting schoolchildren at risk every day, says a concerned grandmother. Sallyanne Williams, from Saltford, says a stretch of Manor Road where motorists are allowed to drive at the national speed limit is a danger to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The section of narrow country lane is sandwiched between two 20mph zones as the road meets residential areas at Grange Road, in Saltford, and Hurn Lane, in Keynsham. Now Mrs Williams, who walks along the route to get to work at the police desk in Keynsham Civic Centre, wants the 60mph zone abolished and replaced with a 20mph limit and is taking her concerns to Bath and North East Somerset Council next month. She said: “The lane is a rat run for people avoiding the A4 and people going to work speed through that section. I have had to jump for my life dozens of times and am terrified for the children who use it to get school. The cars don’t slow down and sometimes pass just inches from you. “Schoolchildren should be able to use their bikes and to cycle safely along this route, it should be encouraged – but it’s so dangerous. It’s crying out to not have cars using it but at the very least should have a 20mph limit – it’s not a panacea but it’s a start if in future it could be enforced.” Ruth and Eddy Bawden have a smallholding on land just inside

the 60mph zone and said cars whose drivers have taken the bends too quickly have ended up in their fields on several occasions. Agreeing with Mrs Williams’ call for the speed limit to be lowered, Mr Bawden said the lane quickly becomes clogged if there is an incident on the A4 and added: “Drivers get frustrated when that happens and there are hold-ups. They jam their foot down even though they can’t see round the corners. It’s really lucky we haven’t had a fatality.” Mrs Williams is now planning to address a meeting of Bath and North East Somerset Council to call for action to be taken and is urging other residents who would like the speed limit lowered to contact their councillors. With one grandson already at Wellsway and one about to join, she said she hopes to see the route made a safe option for pupils. “We should be riding and walking for the sake of the environment and the council should be promoting that and making it safe to do so,” she said.

I have had to jump for my life dozens of times and am terrified for the children who use it to get school. Sallyanne Williams

Resignation may spark election for council A Conservative councillor has resigned from Keynsham Town Council, which could see another election held a matter of months after May’s polling day. John Fleming has stepped down as a representative for the Keynsham South ward leaving a vacancy on the 15-seat council. If at least ten residents call for a vote to fill the seat before Thursday, August 20, in writing to the returning officer then an

election will be held before the end of October. The vacancy will filled by co-option by the other members of the council if there are not enough requests for an election. Seven candidates stood for the five seats in Keynsham South ward in the May elections. Requests for an election can be addressed to Returning Officer, Bath & North East Somerset Council, Guildhall, High Street, Bath, BA1 5AW.

Businesses lined up for Market Walk

A bridal boutique and a fabric shop are among the businesses in talks about taking over units in Keynsham’s Market Walk. Councillor Charles Gerrish, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet member for finance and efficiency, told Keynsham Town Council the two companies were planning a move subject to contracts. A High Street business is also in discussion with the council’s property department about a unit at the site, Mr Gerrish said. “We are constantly working to find businesses to go into Market Walk to create more buzz in Keynsham town centre,” he added. The former Keynsham Snooker Centre premises have attracted interest from a potential tenant and a pop-up arts project could also bring an empty unit Temple Street back into use.

Clock tower to be revealed by Katie, 8

A Keynsham pupil has won the chance to play an important part in the town’s history. Katie Watkins, eight, will be unveiling the long-awaited new clock tower on September 19 at a ceremony planned by the Arts Advisory Group, which has overseen the project, and Keynsham Town Council. Katie’s name – along with runner-up Oliver Sheppard, four – was drawn in a competition that featured in Keynshamvoice last month, which invited youngsters who attended any of the town’s schools to put their name forward for the honour. The clock tower will be made from coloured glass panels designed by Sebastien Boyesen to depict the town’s story, after the artist invited residents to contribute ideas and memories. It will be unveiled by Katie and one of Keynsham’s longstanding residents at noon on Saturday, September 19, at the new civic centre, replacing the old clock tower more than two and a half years after it was demolished to make way for the Market Walk development.

School unveils friendship bench in honour of Ben by Rebecca Day Positivity, fun and friendship – these are the words carved into a new school bench, commemorating local student Ben Pocock, who tragically died in the Malaysian Airlines disaster over Ukraine last year. The “Friendship Bench” was unveiled at a dedication service at St John’s CEVC, the primary school Ben attended when he was a youngster. Family and friends at the ceremony said that the bench perfectly summed up Ben, who is remembered for his fun-loving nature and making friends wherever he went. Ben – a second year student at Loughborough University – was travelling to Australia to spend six months at the University of Western Australia as part of his international business management degree. Jeremy Pocock, Ben’s father, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the bench – a truly impressive piece of work.

Ben Pocock’s father Jeremy, mother Louise and sister Emily “We’re so pleased that the school thought of Ben as he spent seven very happy years here. “He would have been absolutely thrilled to know that it had been done.” Louise Pocock, Ben’s mother, said: “The wording sums up everything about Ben. The bench means a lot, because Ben was really happy here.”

Matthew Bromwich, who had been friends with Ben since they attended St John’s together, said: “It’s reflective of how people remember Ben – everywhere we’ve been people remember him.” The ceremony was also attended by B&NES chairman Councillor Ian Gilchrist and Reverend Stephen McCaw. Cllr Gilchrist said: “Although

Friends and family with the bench at St John’s CEVC, which bears a plaque that says Ben, right, ‘had the gift of friendship’ I did not know Ben personally, I know that he had lots of friends, a great sense of fun and a love of sport. “His parents always mention his fun-loving side – and that's what brings people together as friends.” Rev McCaw said: “Ben had an extraordinary gift of friendship – he would collect friends wherever

he went, so it's only appropriate to remember him with a friendship bench. “May it be a place where friendships are made and enjoyed.” The bench, which took a wood carver three days to create, was a request from children at the school, who wanted somewhere they could sit quietly, away

from the playground. The design is an amalgamation of ideas, contributed by St John’s pupils. Head teacher Dr Matthew Cottrell said: “We ran a design competition across the whole school, but the designs were so fabulous, we couldn’t pick one over the other, so we commissioned a wood carver, who took

the designs and used recurrent themes. “The idea to commemorate the bench to Ben came about after a meeting with a group from the St John’s congregation. One of the members said, as it was coming up to the anniversary of Ben Pocock’s death, wouldn’t it be a nice idea to dedicate the bench to him.”

Council awards groups £24,000

Help your pets keep their cool Summer is the season to have fun in the sun and enjoy the great outdoors with our pets. Ensure you have a relaxing and carefree summer by keeping your pets safe with our top tips. With the weather hotting up, watch out for signs of heatstroke such as excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, vomiting and collapse. To avoid heat exhaustion, make sure your pet has access to enough shade and water, exercise at cooler times of the day and don’t leave them unattended in a hot car. You may not think it, but pets are also at risk of getting sunburn. White, light-coloured or short-haired pets are particularly at risk so consider purchasing some pet-friendly sunscreen or at least a sun cream that is unscented and suitable for babies. Cats with white ears are particularly at risk of getting skin cancer due to sun damage. Pavements, patios and the beach can get so hot they can actually burn your pet’s paw pads. You can usually test the ground surface by placing your hand on the pavement. If it’s too hot to hold your hand there, it’s too hot for your pets to walk on. Summertime parties can be hazardous for pets. From eating kebab skewers and cooked bones, to getting burnt stealing

food off of the barbecue, there are many exciting temptations for the curious or greedy dog. It is easy to let your guard down when you’re having fun so inform your guests not to feed your dog and make sure your pet can escape to somewhere quiet if things get a bit overwhelming. Fleas and ticks are everywhere during the summer months, so make sure you keep up to date with your pet’s parasite control. Don’t forget your bunnies as well; the gruesome flystrike is rife during the summer months so keep checking your rabbit for any signs of an infestation. Speak to one of our highly trained receptionists if you would like some advice on what product to use. If you are at all worried about your pet during the summer months, give Keynsham Veterinary Centre a call and we will be more than happy to help you.

Generous Jess to donate her hair to a good cause A Keynsham schoolgirl is hoping to help a child battling cancer by having a haircut with a difference. Ten-year-old Jess Caines is having her long hair chopped to chin-length in front of family and friends at a fundraising event at Bonzo Lounge on August 14. The Castle School pupil will then be sending the chopped locks off to the Little Princess Trust to turn it into a wig for a child who has lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other serious illness. Jess, who has been collecting sponsorship over the past few weeks, said she was feeling nervous but added: “It will be doing something nice for someone else – my hair will grow back but not everybody’s will.” Jess’s hair will be cut by one of the team from Pure Hair and Beauty at the Keynsham café-bar where, weather permitting, a bouncy castle will be provided by Jess mum’s partner Jamie

Jess Caines will be having her hair cut off for Little Princess Trust at Bonzo Lounge in Keynsham Gunton of Bristol Fun for Hire from 3-5pm and people will be invited to donate to the cause. Mum Gemma Brown, who will be supporting Jess on the day along with her four-year-old brothers George and William, said they hoped to raise at least £350, which would cover the cost of making a wig. She added: “I was quite shocked when Jess said she

wanted to have her hair cut as a couple of months ago she wouldn’t even have it trimmed. We support her completely as she’ll be helping someone recovering from cancer.” Jess has set up a fundraising page to allow people to donate to the cause at www.justgiving. com/Gemma-Brown31/. Toxic plant ‘not on rise locally’ A plant that grows in spots around Keynsham and Saltford has been hitting the headlines lately as several youngsters in the Greater Manchester area were burned after coming into contact with it. Just brushing against giant hogweed can cause nasty blisters on the skin and even blindness in cases where the sap comes into contact with the eyes. But local foraging expert Chris Westgate has told Keynshamvoice that while the spate of injuries was unusual, she hadn’t seen an increase in the number of plants locally. Knowing what to look out for when out and about and what to do if you spot any giant hogweed is important, she said. Chris, who makes food and drink from foraged ingredients through her company Heavenly Hedgerows and gives foraging talks and tours, said: “It should always be reported to the council. “I have only met one person who has suffered burns as a

result of giant hogweed. He was walking his dog, which came into contact with the sap, and when he picked up the dog his hands were burnt and blistered. “Giant hogweed likes to have its feet wet, so you will often find it at the edge of ponds, by rivers or damp meadows. It has a blotchy red spots on the stem and its huge leaves are sharply pointed. With up to 20,000 seeds per flower, it is best removed before it flowers.” The invasive plant lives up to its “giant” description, growing from 5ft to 15ft, and towering over the native common hogweed, which grows from 3ft to 5ft and is a prolific roadside wild flower. The University of Bristol’s Nature Locator team, along with the Environment Agency and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, has developed an app to track giant hogweed, along with other non-native, invasive species. Writing in a blog on their website following the recent

A child pictured next to a giant hogweed plant, left; above, a close-up of the plant’s sharply pointed leaves – just brushing against one can cause the skin to blister stories about giant hogweed, the team said: “A series of accidents involving children has resulted in some well overdue press coverage about this highly toxic plant. It is a relatively common nonnative invasive species, often found growing along rivers and streams and on waste ground.” Sightings should be reported to land owners, they said, and

added: “It goes without saying that you shouldn't touch or attempt to remove any plants you think might be giant hogweed.” The PlantTracker app is free to download from the iTunes App Store and Android Market and allows users to submit photos and locations and contains images and help to identify plants.

Youngsters enjoy a round of golf during Chernobyl charity visit Golfers in Saltford hosted a fun day for 16 children visiting the Bristol area from Belarus, where their lives are still affected by the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster nearly 30 years ago. The youngsters, aged 10 and 11, spent a morning on the course at Saltford Golf Club having their first go at the sport with tuition from members, before tucking into a barbecue. The club’s senior section has chosen the Bristol Link of the Chernobyl Children’s Life Line (CCLL) as their charity of the year, holding fundraising raffles and competitions to help pay for the children’s trip as well as organising the fun day on July 30. Golf club member and CCLL volunteer Steve Tynan suggested the club get involved with the visit, during which families host the children for two weeks, take them to the New Forest for a long weekend, arrange activities and take them for health check-ups. He said: “During the day at

The young visitors from Belarus enjoy some refreshments and their first ever golf lesson at Saltford Golf Club the club they can have a bit of fun trying out different aspects of golf and have good food and fresh air. It’s something different that they wouldn’t experience at home – and there are a couple of good golfers among them!” Senior captain Jim Bernard said: “The seniors have been behind this 110 per cent and have been very responsive to the charity – 26 of them are here this morning to meet the children. It’s

good for the members to see the results of the fundraising and see the enjoyment on the children’s faces.” The club also contributed towards the children’s visit to Avon Valley Country Park and hope they will be able to fund some of next year’s young guests. Chairman of the Bristol Link Andy March said: ”This kind of contribution is invaluable as it costs around £10,000 to bring

9

16 children and two translators over here. The golf club’s offer of putting on an activity was also gratefully received. It’s something completely different for the children to do as they don’t do golf in Belarus and so many people have devoted their time to the day.” During the youngsters’ stay, the Lions Club of Keynsham also purchased each child a pair of trainers from Boots and Shoes in Staple Hill and hosted a barbecue. Station overflow to keep cars off roads

Parking problems in streets near Keynsham Station are being tackled with 70 extra car parking spaces. Developer Taylor Wimpey unveiled the extended overflow car park on July 20, increasing the site’s capacity to around 100 spaces. The project was the result of discussions with neighbouring residents, who said rail commuters were leaving their cars in residential streets. Adrian Slade, project director at Taylor Wimpey’s Somerdale development, said: “The decision to extend the Keynsham railway station overflow car park was made following a community engagement event a couple of years ago, prior to the planning application for Somerdale, when some members of the local community raised concerns about parking outside their homes. “They were beginning to get fed up when they came home and were unable to park outside their properties, which was due to railway station users having to park their cars on the surrounding roads. “In order to resolve these matters, we’ve extended and formalised existing facilities to create an overflow car park which users of the railway station can use free of charge, to reduce congestion on the surrounding roads and improve access for local residents.”

Dig unearths both clues As archaeologists dug further into Keynsham’s Roman roots during July, so the mystery of exactly what once stood here well over 1,500 years ago deepened. Excavation work at Keynsham Cemetery has been taking place to shed more light on the vast remains of what has been known since the 1920s as Durley Hill Roman Villa. Volunteers from Bath and Camerton Archaeological Association (Bacas) have been hard at work uncovering a section of wall in the cemetery’s extension to try to piece together what a neighbouring building, revealed during archaeological surveys in the 1990s, might have been. Funded by the Association of Roman Archaeology (ARA), the overall aim of the two-week dig and examination of the findings is to prove or disprove its director Bryn Walker’s theory that the vast Durley Hill complex is not in fact a spectacularly grand country house but a religious healing sanctuary, with links to the nearby lost city of Trajectus. The newly uncovered remains could, he believes, “prove to be a detached temple fronting the great villa building beneath the Victorian cemetery”. The site has so far kept its secrets well, however, with Bacas project leader Gary Pratt and chairman Bob Whitaker MBE puzzling over what they have found – and, significantly, not found – in their trench. Without any coins to help put a date to the remains, other mysteries include the lack of any roof tiles, none of the bones, pots and oyster shells that would be

Bob Whitaker MBE and Gary Pratt of Bacas at the site of the Keynsham found around a domestic building and no offerings that would be expected at an ancient temple. A set of very well-worn steps uncovered during the team’s geophysics work to map the underground remains also casts doubt on the long-held belief the site was a private country retreat, says Gary. “It’s somewhere lots of people came to do something, it’s more complex than being a villa,” he explains. “With Trajectus and this complex and signs of other buildings, it definitely tells us that it is

not a country villa and this site in Keynsham was a really important settlement, not just a little village. There was more going on here than people thought. “There is archaeology everywhere – you wouldn’t know it was here but the geophysics show Keynsham was quite important.” With the dig at an end and the Roman wall covered with several layers of earth once again, now the group will be examining their finds, and consulting experts whose knowledge might provide some answers. The trench has yielded some

clues, including tesserae – the small tiles used in creating mosaics – some pottery and glass, a piece of carved Bath stone indicating there was once an archway and signs that a doorway was later blocked up with stone, one featuring one of Keynsham’s even more ancient ammonites. Finding no clear answers so far is disappointing but also

intriguing, said Gary, who hopes Bacas will be able to return to carry out more digging in the future – “It’s complicated, as archaeology often is,” he said. As for guesses from the volunteers on site, one suggestion is that perhaps the huge villa building was in fact an administrative centre or tax office – a forerunner to the council offices in today’s Keynsham, perhaps?

Are some council officers trying to prove a point as to why they did not put a crossing in the correct location in Temple Street by positioning a crossing so close to the junction with Bath Hill that there will be so many collisions they will wring their hands and say “I told you so”? I read with interest your article concerning the trees belonging to Network Rail and the gesture of goodwill by B&NES to cut them back (“Trees blocking view of camera get the chop”, July, Keynshamvoice). I live in Old Vicarage Green and together with several other residents have complained about two trees near our properties that are totally out of proportion for their location. They have only been cut back once in the last ten years. My first email to B&NES on April 18 was “lost” between departments. My second of June 2 prompted a visit from the council. Youth and education

Volunteering with the Youth Service

News

Do you have a passion for making a difference? Skills and experience you possess which will benefit the future generation of Keynsham? The Youth Service is always looking for volunteers who can enhance the programme we offer. A good example of this is the Allotment Project which has three volunteers whose involvement brings with it a raft of new skills for young people to learn. This project has been positive in bringing different generational groups together. Below we hear from Clare Batterbee, 17, who is volunteering over the six weeks of summer. Why volunteer? I enjoy working with people and youth work or child care is something I would like to go in to. Volunteering gives me a chance to learn skills needed to go into these jobs. Do you enjoy volunteering? It is hard work. I am treated just like any member of the team and there are expectations and duties that I have to perform.

Summer Programme (August) 2015 Activities in August include: Bush Craft School l Friday, August 14: Wilderness Gathering The Youth Service will be attending the National Wilderness Gathering event in Wiltshire where there will be dozens of workshops, demonstrations and masterclasses to try. l Friday, August 21: Overnight Survival Camp Do you have what it takes to survive off the land for the 24-hour survival challenge? Individuals will have a chance to camp overnight using survival skills which they will be taught by qualified staff and cook using foraged ingredients. Are you up for the challenge? Visit to Weston-super-Mare l All day event, Thursday, August 6 The Youth Service will be

heading for the beach and the pier. Fish and chips, donkey rides and sandcastle building also available! Kayaking in Bath l Wednesday, August 26 – 5.30-9.30pm An opportunity for young people to experience kayaking, facilitated by qualified instructors. You will have to be able to swim 50 metres to be able to participate. Cost of the event will be return travel to Bath Spa. Tintagel Activities Project l August 11, 12 and 13 – 1.30pm to 4.30pm There will be a range of sports competitions such as the 2on2 Basketball Competition, activities including Clown School, art workshops and environmental projects Rock Climbing l Wednesday, August 19 The Youth Service will be

Although this makes it more challenging it also makes it more rewarding because I can see how I am growing and the different skills that I am using. This will help when applying for other jobs. What do you think of Keynsham? I like Keynsham but there is not much to do for young people. TimeOut and the Youth Service is much needed, especially for young people who do not have the money to do other things. Without it where will young people go and what will they do?

What has been happening in July? Young people were hard at work preparing the allotment for the In Bloom judges. Young people had an opportunity to meet and discuss with the judges how they feel about having the allotment and the benefits they get out of it. The results of the South West In Bloom and the local Keynsham In Bloom will be announced in September and all of us in the Youth Service have our fingers crossed. Timeout Youth Centre made a visit to the Riverside offering a group activity based in an indoor centre in Bristol. The Allotment Project l Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the holidays The Allotment Project has been a positive project for young people. We have currently planted leek, pumpkin, squash, marrow, onion, potato, tomato, courgette, chilli, peppers and broad beans. Do you want to help create our scarecrow or build our Bee Hotel? The allotment isn’t just about growing fruit and vegetables. Keynsham Neighbourhood Task Force The Hoodies will be out in force over the summer, which

This was very positive in regards to seeing their music studio and discussing how we could run a tuck shop. The Youth Service, with Project 28, continues to offer Outreach in the Park and also in Tintagel. On Wednesday, July 29, Timeout members visited Bristol to follow the Shaun the Sheep trail. We started from Bristol Temple Meads and heading through many streets of Bristol to find 17 sheep. Everyone had a lot of fun and we would recommend it to everyone. Scouts join giant Japan jamboree Five Scouts from Keynsham and Saltford have flown out to Japan to join thousands of others from across the globe at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree. Lee Curtis, Edward Hutchings and Imogen McDermott of Saltford’s Argus Explorer Unit and Georgina Watkins-Smith and Madison Walsh of Keynsham Explorer Unit are among 30,000 youngsters attending the 10-day event, which runs from July 28 until August 8. The theme is “Spirit of Unity” and as well as experiencing other cultures, trying food from around the world and taking part in a range of activities, there will also be a one-day visit to Hiroshima where the young people, aged 14 to 17, will attend a peace ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. There will also be the opportunity to look closely at environmental issues and at developments in science and technology during the jamboree

as the Scouts learn about future sources of energy, challenges facing the world’s ecology, and robotics and automotive innovations. The Keynsham and Saltford Scouts, along with three others from North East Somerset’s Wansdyke District, have raised a large proportion of the £3,000 needed to fund the trip themselves and have taken part in several team training camps in preparation. As well as camping out at Kirar-hama, the visiting Scouts will also stay at the homes of Japanese Scouts during the trip. District Commissioner Stuart Ballard said: “Although founded in the UK, Scouting rapidly became a truly international movement. More countries are represented at the World Jamboree than at the Olympic Games. “This will be a life-changing experience for all the young people attending.”

Youngsters brighten up forgotten corners Scouts of all ages have been rolling up their sleeves as part of Keynsham’s bid to impress the judges in the South West in Bloom competition. More than 40 Beaver Scouts have helped to create a wildflower patch at their Ashton Way HQ, sowing seeds, tracking the insects they find there and discovering new uses for common plants, such as making soup from nettles. Meanwhile, the Scouts and Cubs teamed up to give the raised flower beds in Ashton

Way car park some much-needed TLC, removing litter, trimming the shrubs, weeding and planting some colourful new bedding plants. The Scouts take part in a wide range of activities and adult leaders with diverse interests and skills are always needed to enable activities to go ahead and help young people to achieve new goals. For more information about getting involved, email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or call 07714 237525.

A sponsor is being sought to run a new primary school in Keynsham, which is due to open its doors to pupils in September 2017. Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced it is now accepting applications from organisations such as academies, charities and those with educational expertise to operate the 210-place school at the former Somerdale factory site. The school will be built by Taylor Wimpey to cater for the families moving to the 700-home development being created on the site. At the same time, the local authority is also looking for a sponsor to run a new primary at the Ensleigh site in Bath. Councillor Michael Evans, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “Investing in our area’s children and young people is one of the six main priorities of this administration. This includes creating new primary school places where they are

needed so that as many parents as possible can send their child to a local school of their choosing. We also want to ensure that the right infrastructure, including new school places, is in place alongside new housing developments such as Somerdale and Ensleigh so as not to put pressure on existing nearby services.” He added: “We’re very fortunate to have mostly ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ schools here in Bath and North East Somerset, and will continue to support them to improve and promote educational excellence. We are looking for partners who share our high aspirations for local children to support the running of these schools.” The new schools should be able to gain a “good” rating from Ofsted, says the council, and be working towards “outstanding”. Potential sponsors have been given a deadline of October 16, and a decision is expected to be approved by the Department for Education in February 2016.

News in brief

Primary is leading the way on equality A Keynsham primary school is winning praise for its approach to encouraging pupils to be themselves and value others. Pupils in St Keyna Primary’s E-Team have been leading activities to raise the profile of equality and diversity issues among their classmates and at schools across the area. The group recently organised a #beyourselfie day, during which pupils and staff were invited to come to school wearing whatever they felt best represented them and to examine gender stereotypes.

keynshamvoice

“Equality cupcakes” were handed out as mementoes of the day, with one E-team member saying: “We had such a brilliant day thinking about what it means to be yourself, to be proud of who you are, to value yourself because you are unique, and not to allow stereotypes to determine how you live your life.” The team also welcomed pupils from Longvernal, Freshford, Saltford, Castle, Whitchurch and St Stephen’s Primary in Kingswood to St Keyna for a workshop on some of the issues. In recognition of the school’s contribution, St Keyna head teacher Adrienne Hughes recently joined representatives from Bath and North East Somerset Council to pick up a Stonewall Education for All award for being the best local authority in Britain for tackling homophobic bullying. She said: “It’s been fantastic to be part of this inspirational group of people who have worked so hard to ensure that children can grow up in a world where they can be accepted for whoever they are.”

Community appeals for youth worker Community leaders in Saltford are appealing for help to make youth services a permanent fixture in the village. Saltford Community Association is hoping to offer a meeting place and activities for young people on Friday nights at Saltford Hall. With funding and a venue available, as well as a volunteer, the group is now seeking a qualified youth worker to run the service for an hourly rate. It follows the success of a youth bus scheme, which has been funded by Bath and North East Somerset Council and Saltford Parish Council for the past year. Steve Johnson, chair of the SCA, said: “There are a number of children that benefit from the youth bus; those that I have seen have learned some excellent life skills and have come to think of the bus as a second home.” Anyone who could run a new youth service can contact Steve at chair@saltfordhall.co.uk or on 01225 872025 or 07967 704706.

Club and community rally round to help cyclist on road to recovery

A keen cyclist from Keynsham recovering from a serious accident says he couldn’t ask to live in a better community. Richard Franklin, who owns Franks Window Cleaning Services, says he has been overwhelmed by messages of support and acts of kindness following a crash during a road cycling race in Gloucestershire in May. The accident, in which a driver knocked him from his bike after turning into his path, left him with two fractured bones in his neck, two fractured vertebrae and injuries to his face and hand, which meant he has been unable to work or take part in any of the sports he loves. Richard has previously featured in Keynshamvoice when he completed a gruelling Ironman challenge, including a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile marathon run, raising £2,000 for Keynsham and District Mencap Society, inspired by his stepson Ryan, who attends clubs run by the charity.

colleagues, cycled around 125 miles through the night, completing laps of Chew Valley Lake before joining the rest of the group’s regular Saturday morning ride to the lake at 7am. Richard said: “I couldn’t ask to live in a better place, it’s really hit home that it’s such a great community and I just can’t thank people enough.” The sponsored ride raised £1,700, with some going towards a family break for Richard, wife Julie and Ryan, while Richard says he plans to put the rest towards completing coaching accreditation with British Cycling to “give something back” to the club. Salt and Sham member Gary Roethenbaugh said: “As cyclists we know this accident could have happened to anyone of us. “Rich is a very popular guy in the club and is one of the founding members, by finishing off his coaching [accreditation] it gives something back and it comes full circle.”

Richard Franklin, front centre, with members of Salt and Sham Cycle Club, at Keynsham Cricket Club, the group’s base After news of the accident spread around his hometown, Richard has received more than 120 get well cards, gifts, countless visits from well-wishers and has even had people mowing his grass, cutting hedges and carrying out odd jobs.

Fellow window cleaners have rallied round to keep his business going while cyclists from Salt and Sham, the cycling club Richard helped to found two years ago, surprised him with a fundraising cycle ride in his honour. Around 20 members, sponsored by other

August, 2015

It is my pleasure to be writing to all readers of Keynshamvoice. May I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Beat Manager for the Keynsham area. Having spent most of the last eleven years of my police service on Response, I am looking forward to the new challenge of community policing and tackling the issues that may arise. There are, I’m sure, many of you who know me, as I grew up in Keynsham and I am looking forward to re-acquainting myself with the residents of the town and surrounding villages, so if you see me out and about, please stop me for a chat, it would be good to catch up! The town itself is especially

with PC Kerry Grace close to my heart and I still consider it to be “home”. For this reason, I am extremely honoured to be in a position where I can represent and hopefully make a difference for the residents here and I am excited about the challenges that lie ahead. I hope that you are all enjoying the fine weather we are experiencing this summer. From a policing point of view, this time of year always brings with it its own unique issues. As I am composing this piece, I am aware that it is the start of the summer holidays for our children. What begins as eager excitement can sometimes quickly turn into boredom

Murder Mystery on the Avon Valley Express Jump aboard for an evening of whodunit. which can invariably bring antisocial behaviour. This is something that all of our team at the Keynsham Civic Centre are eager to avoid happening and deal with if it does occur. Anti-social behaviour is any behaviour that is likely to cause harassment alarm or distress and can include things such as noisy, loud gatherings in our open spaces near houses, drunken or rowdy behaviour in the street, littering and vandalism among other things. I have been lucky enough already to meet up with one resident who has shown me some of these problems at the community woodland on Manor Road. This is an area that we as a team will continue to patrol

and monitor throughout the summer. I would urge you all to contact me or my team on the non-emergency number of 101 if you witness any incidents of anti-social behaviour. This time of year also brings its fair share of animal welfare issues, which include dogs being locked in cars with no water, shade or ventilation and animals being left at home in a similar condition. As police officers, we have the power to use necessary means to release animals from cars if we believe them to be in danger, which can include smashing windows. Please be responsible and enjoy the rest of the summer! Bye for now.

Walkers mark group’s 40 years – with a walk A fitting 40 people joined a celebratory outing to mark the 40th anniversary of a walking group. Starting with coffee at The Crown, Saltford Walkers enjoyed a 2.5-mile walk on July 18 along the river and across countryside to Corston, before returning to the pub for a well-earned lunch. The club began with an advert placed in Saltford Post Office and the Keynsham Chronicle inviting anyone interested to join Gwen Rixon at The Crown on a Wednesday evening in July 1975. Three people – Elizabeth Palmer, Jean Strachan and Len Coggins – turned up and the following week, joined by Joyce Wilshire, they set off on a five-mile walk around Kelston. Chairman Helen Gilroy said: “From then on word spread and within three years, with the closure of Keynsham Ramblers, numbers steadily grew to 52. The first AGM took place in early January 1978 and we've been going strong since. Numbers fluctuate as, like all activities, rambling comes in and out of fashion but for the past three or so years membership has stayed in the mid 90s.”

Speaking about the anniversary celebration, she said: “The walk was wonderful, a glorious day and 38 members joined vice chairman Martin and I to celebrate. The walk brought together all three groups – long walkers, amblers and strollers – and for many it was an opportunity to meet members we only ordinarily see at social events and others whom we’ve never met.” The group walk up to four times a month on Saturdays as well as organising other activities, membership is £12 and people can find out more on Twitter @SaltfordWalkers.

Plans under way for tree festival Christmas trees will once again be filling every corner of St John’s Church as Keynsham Christmas Tree Festival returns. The event, which is taking place for the third time, will run from Friday, December 4, to Sunday, December 6. Community groups, local charities and schools will be among those sponsoring the trees, which are decorated to reflect the activities of each sponsor.

The festival is held every other year and in 2013 welcomed more than 2,000 people to admire 60 trees inside the church. There were also performances from musicians, carols from the choir and a sale of refreshments and Christmas crafts. The event raised more than £2,000, which was split between Keynsham Foodbank and St John’s Church. Organisers say more information on how to take part and sponsor a tree will be available next month.

Bells will ring out over town as group marks two historic dates The bells at Keynsham’s St John’s Church will be ringing out across the town this month in honour of two very different dates in recent history. Bell ringers will be climbing the steep stone steps of the tower and taking up the ropes to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 on August 9 and to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Great Western Railway through the town on the bank holiday weekend. The first date will be marked with a half-muffled quarter peal of Stedman Triples while a quarter peal of Grandsire will ring out for the second, says Keynsham Tower Captain Martin Pearson. Church bells also rang out on July 19 in honour of the 50th anniversary of Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society. A band of eight bell ringers, led by Mr Pearson, came from miles around to complete the

commitments, but the great thing about bell ringers is that we're always happy to help out at each other's towers, even if it means a long drive or train journey to get there.” Keynsham has around 12 bell ringers who are always keen to show visitors the ropes – as they did when Keynshamvoice

Award flags up best parks in the area

Keynsham Memorial Park is flying the flag for Bath and North East Somerset’s green spaces again, winning an award for its high standards. The popular site has received a Green Flag Award for its facilities and good maintenance, along with four other parks and green spaces managed by the council. Councillor Martin Veal, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Although this area is renowned for its floral displays, we are absolutely delighted that five of our local parks and green spaces have received Green Flag Awards from Keep Britain Tidy. “This demonstrates that we have parks of the very highest quality in our area, available free for local people to use as well as visitors. “Congratulations to everyone involved in looking after these areas which bring huge benefit to local communities.” Alexandra Park, Royal Victoria Park and Haycombe Cemetery in Bath and Silver Street Local Nature Reserve in Midsomer Norton are the other local Green Flag Award winners.

Town shines for judges’ visit days before theft Volunteers across Keynsham who have been creating floral displays, trimming grass and hedges, collecting litter, and tending their gardens to get the town ready for its South West in Bloom inspection can now sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labours. Judges from the organisation visited the town on Friday, July 10, to take a tour and assess the standard of Keynsham’s entry in the regional contest. Terry Porter and Lesley Jelleyman were welcomed by members of the Keynsham in Bloom committee at St Dunstan’s Church Community Gardens before climbing aboard a Keynsham Dial-a-Ride bus to visit the Memorial Park, High Street, Manor Road Wildflower Patch, Wellsway School, Scout HQ, Keynsham Allotments and more. The tour ended at Keynsham Bowling Club for an exhibition on the projects across the town and lunch with the Keynsham in Bloom committee and supporters from across the community. The house. committee was also presented with a donation of £330 from Waitrose’s Community Matters initiative. The committee’s efforts to brighten up Keynsham as well as impress the judges were marred several days later, however, by the theft of knitted flowers created by volunteers to decorate the roadside railings on Bath Hill near the entrance to the Memorial Park. Around half of the display disappeared over the weekend of July 18-19 to the disappointment of the Keynsham in Bloom group and many residents, who took to Keynsham Town Council’s Facebook to share their views. A post by the council revealing the theft had 22,300 hits as well as more than 80 comments in support of the group’s efforts. KIB chairman Denise James said: “We are a resident-led community group trying to make Keynsham a nicer place to live and work not only for us but also for those selfish people that seem to think it's funny to destroy

Fry’s locomotive is reunited with a Volunteers restoring a former Fry’s factory steam locomotive to its former glory are celebrating after getting their hands on vital piece of the vehicle’s past. The little Sentinel Shunter engine has now been reunited with one of its original brass nameplates 51 years after it was removed from the side of its cab by scrap dealers. The team working on the project at Avon Valley Railway in Bitton had to act quickly after receiving an unexpected tip-off that the item was going under the hammer in Warwickshire in June. Eric Miles, a former Fry’s engineering apprentice who tracked down the rusting engine in 2009 after a five-year search, and fellow volunteer George Colbourne travelled to the railwayana auction with fingers crossed they would be returning with the plate at the end of the day. The pair weren’t the only ones interested in the lot but after a nail-biting few minutes they saw off rival bidders, securing the plate for £492.82 – a mere snip with some of the other plates

piece of its past pattern to cut replicas and now we would like to find the other one.” The Sentinel Shunter is on show at Avon Valley Railway’s Bitton Station as the restoration project progresses and, with shiny royal blue paintwork, its decades as a rusty, neglected wreck are a fading memory. Its boiler is currently in the workshop for welding, riveting and new tubes and the volunteers hope to see it running along the restored line next year at the attraction’s gala days, with “Fry’s” and “Somerdale” emblazoned on its sides once more. The engine was used at the chocolate factory to move trucks and wagons along the site’s two miles of railway tracks, before being retired in 1956 and sold on several times. Mr Miles said: “It took four to five years to locate the engine so it was a long haul. Everyone believed it had been scrapped but I said until someone says they cut it up I will keep looking for it.” The volunteers are also compiling a photo archive of the Sentinel’s history and are appeal-

Butterflies choir perform ‘moving’ festival concert Butterflies-Voice Choir gave a truly moving performance in The Space above the library in Keynsham’s new Civic Centre on July 1, reports Keynsham Action Network. The choir, led by Bristol musician and choirmaster Charlie Groves, started from scratch through Keynsham Action Network just seven months ago. It is based at Keynsham’s Butterflies-Haven, the support organisation for families affected by the autism spectrum. Choir members include several children and young people attending Butterflies-Haven along with parents and supporters. Inspired by the BBC2 Gareth Malone series, the development of the choir was followed by a film crew from Bath Spa University. The documentary about autism and the power of song was produced by three final year students led by Tilly Karabina.

After the film premiere, the choir sang a programme of familiar popular songs with some entirely original songs created by Charlie, Trish Williams, the founder of Butterflies-Haven, and choir members. The choir hopes to tour venues in and around Keynsham in the autumn. Meanwhile, Live Simply invited two international speakers to Keynsham’s Big Tent on the Friday of the Music Festival. Adam Lent is European Director for Research and Innovation for Ashoka, the premier global network for social

entrepreneurs. His message was that history shows we do not have to put up with domination by big business and big government and current trends show that small is not only beautiful but powerful. Katie Alcott gave us a great local example of small power. She told her story of founding her business, Frank Water, following her own experience of serious illness through drinking contaminated water in India. The goal of her charitable social enterprise based in Bristol is “safe water for all”. They work with community organisations across India funding their work through selling bottled water in the UK and channeling 100 per cent of the profits to their Indian partners. They were worthy successors to Satish Kumar in 2013 and Alastair McIntosh in 2014. The evening was compered by Chris Preist from Bristol University.

• boiler upgrades and new heating controls Council grants available now for • loft, cavity wall, under floor and solid wall insulation • energy efficient glazing and external doors energy-saving home improvements • renewable technologies e.g. solar PV panels Bath and North East Somerset Council currently has a grant of up to £6,000 available to help make energy-saving improvements to your home. The grant can be used to help cover the costs of improvements such as new boilers, heating controls, internal, external, or cavity wall insulation, new glazing, highperformance external doors, and renewable energy technologies. Installing measures like these can help improve your home’s energy performance, reduce the amount you spend on your energy bills, and will help prepare your home for winter. The grant is available through the Bath and North East Somerset Energy at Home Scheme. The scheme provides a free advice service which gives expert guidance on all aspects of home energy including: how to get the best deal on your energy bills; which energy-saving improvements and renewable energy technologies might be most appropriate for your home; and which grants and finance are available to help you. This grant is only available for a limited time and is offered on a first come first served basis so if you are interested, you should contact the advice service now. Diane and Michael Hammond recently had external wall insulation installed to their 1950s bungalow in Keynsham through the Energy at Home Scheme. Diane said: “We needed to re-render the bungalow because it was cracked and we had problems with damp coming through. We thought we might as well do the insulation at the same time to make our home warmer and lower our bills. We were thrilled to get a grant from the Council to help us cover the costs of the work and we are very pleased with the results.” There are several areas of system built housing in Keynsham that may be particularly suitable for external wall insulation. It can help reduce heat loss through the walls, help prevent condensation, damp and mould problems, reduce the level of street noise heard in the home and improve the external appearance of your home.

Surprise party marks 60 years for dedicated couple’s family-run firm

Family, friends and staff marked a milestone date for a Keynsham garden centre by throwing a surprise party for the couple who own the business. The event celebrated 60 years since David Morris, aged just 17 and still at school, first launched a market gardening business on overgrown fields at the top of Stockwood Hill. The venture is now better known to customers as Whitegate Nurseries, or the Secret Garden Centre, where David still works alongside wife Clare, members of two younger generations of their family and many long-serving staff. The greenhouses and buildings are all the result of David’s own hard work in transforming the land, including the house they live in today after the family spent years living in a caravan on site. When pressure from supermarkets on market gardeners selling vegetables began to grow, David and Clare changed direc-

David Morris, fifth from left, and wife Clare, fifth from right, with family at the surprise 60th anniversary party for Whitegate Nurseries tion and began selling flowers around 40 years ago. The garden centre now offers a wide range of plants and products for the garden and vegetable patch as well as an on-site café and gift shop.

Granddaughter Sarah Moseley-Williams said: “We are very proud of them both. They work so hard to keep it going and are still up at 6am doing the gardening and watering.

“During the recession the garden centre has struggled yet my grandparents sacrifice everything to keep the place afloat so we could all keep our jobs.” David, who was inspired to start the gardening business after seeing a big garden centre in the Lake District as a teenager, said he and Clare, now both in their late 70s, work seven days a week but that they both like to “keep on the go”. “This business requires dedication,” he said. “We think of our plants as our babies as they always need feeding and watering and we are always watching things. It also needs an awful lot of planning for the year ahead. “I never dreamed, when it was just me planting out beans, that anything like this would develop.” The couple have five children and seven grandchildren, with many of them joining friends and staff, both past and present, at the surprise celebration at the garden centre on July 31.

JITrona rE, hrnlth Vicky Bailey smashes into a money box for Send a Cow

Vicky ends year at charity with a smashing gift

A Keynsham woman found a smashing way to end her yearlong internship with a Bathbased charity. Vicky Bailey, 22, gave the team at Send a Cow a parting gift of £501 after smashing a money box she and her mother Deborah had been dropping coins into for several years Vicky said: ‘‘I couldn’t believe it when I finally smashed open the piggy bank and discovered that we’d managed to collect over £500 in £1 and £2 coins. It’s amazing how much loose change can add up to.’’ Send a Cow supports rural development in Africa, helping families work their way out of poverty, and Vicky’s donation could buy two cows. The animals

would help with ploughing as well as provide manure to improve the production of crops. During her year volunteering with the charity, Vicky worked in the educational development team, visiting primary schools across Bath, Bristol and Somerset to teach children about Africa, sustainability and Send a Cow’s work. Vicky said: ‘‘I really enjoyed seeing local children engage and learn about Africa and I loved being part of the Send a Cow team. I’m inspired by everything they’re trying to achieve in Africa and this donation is a great way to finish my internship.’’ To find out more about Send a Cow, visit www.sendacow.org.

Closer to nature with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group Ten members of the Keynsham local group of the Avon Wildlife Trust visited Easton-inGordano, expecting a close-up view of St George’s flower bank, a local nature reserve. Unfortunately, as warden and walk leader Bob Buck explained, it would be far too dangerous because of its proximity to the busy road. Instead, he guided us for three hours and three miles almost up to Failand Church and back, across pasture, cultivated land, hedgerows, woodland edge, stiles and gates and rural lanes rich in fern species. The view from the top was impressive, taking in Portbury Dock, Avonmouth and its bridge, the Severn estuary and its three largest bridges, Pill and Shirehampton. Highlights included an oak egg moth caterpillar (a “woolly

bear”); numerous buzzards; a barn owl roost, where we collected some pellets; numerous butterflies and moths (including marbled white and large yellow underwing); a tutorial on the commonest grasses (including Yorkshire fog, cocksfoot, timothy grass and crested dog’s tail); all three local Hirudines (swift, swallow and house martin); foxgloves in full flower; a scary hornet; cornflower and white and black bryony (unrelated – one is a gourd, the other a yam!). The visit ended with a well-earned lunch in the local pub! Overall, an extremely enjoyable and varied walk on a lovely summer’s day and a huge thanks to Bob Buck for guiding us round. At the end, a very slow drive down the bus lane and back up meant we did get to see St George’s flower

bank after all, festooned with pyramidal orchids, scabious, yellow rattle and numerous other plants in full bloom. Early in July, more than 25 Avon Wildlife Trust members and non-members visited Hill House Farm, perched high on the Dundry escarpment. Ranging in age from six weeks to over 80 years, we were shown round by farmer David Hurford, who knew plenty about the wildlife and history of the farm. Apart from the incredible views over Barrow

Tanks, Bristol Airport and the Severn estuary beyond, we were shown an old stone quarry (stone used to build St Mary Redcliffe Church, five centuries ago!), now reverted to nature; a fake wartime pill box, used on a filming set; a mixed herd of dairy cattle at close range; rich limestone grassland, with devil’s bit scabious, bird’s foot trefoil, lady’s bedstraw and thyme, all visited by six-spot burnet moths, marbled white butterflies and green fat-thighed beetles. Other highlights included a buzzard perched in a tree at close range, a blackcap in full song, a wall covered in biting stonecrop (sedum) and finally the farm pond, a particular favourite of the children, full of frog tadpoles, newly emerged froglets and baby newts. Not a bad tally for such a diverse group!

New president named as club donates £2,200

A new president has been handed the official collar for the year ahead at the Rotary Club of Keynsham. Jenny Eaton has succeeded Nigel Hutchings in the role following a handover ceremony. During his year as president, Nigel oversaw a number of fundraising activities, bringing in £2,200 for his chosen charity, the RUH Forever Friends Cancer Care Appeal. Among the fundraising events was a plant fair, held in May at Keynsham’s Fear Hall, where the club also invited local junior and infant schools to enter a sunflower growing contest. Chandag Infant and Junior Schools, St Keyna Primary and Castle Primary took up the challenge with members of the Rotary Club visiting each on July 9 for measuring day. In each school, the winners and runners-up received

certificates and a “voucher” for 10 minutes’ extra playtime as well as a set of crayon pencils for their classes. The overall winners of the challenge were the Year 1 pupils of Aquamarine Class at St Keyna Primary School, who grew a sunflower 190.5cm tall. They received a book on plants for the school’s library. Funds from the plant fair were added to the proceeds from a concert hosted by the club at St John’s Church, featuring ChoirJam and the City Sound Choir, to make the £2,200 total, which was handed to the appeal’s Lydia McGivern at a Rotary Club meeting on July 8. New president Jenny is planning events for the year ahead, and anyone who would like to get involved or find out more about the Rotary Club of Keynsham can get in touch by email at keynshamrotary@ hotmail.co.uk.

News in brief Residents urged to sign up to save on oil Local charity the West of England Rural Network is advising householders to top up their domestic oil tanks before expected price rises in autumn and winter. The charity runs a community oil-buying scheme which aims to save local people money on their oil bills by placing a collective order once a month. Scheme co-ordinator Jill Baker said: “Oil prices tend to rise in autumn and winter as demand increases. By placing a single large order we can negotiate with suppliers and everyone pays less.” The West of England Rural Network is able to offer free memberships to the community oil-buying scheme (normally £20 a year) to anyone over 70 living in the West of England who uses domestic heating oil. This is thanks to a second grant from Quartet Community Foundation from their Surviving Winter fund. The scheme is open to all residents of Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South

keynshamvoice

Gloucestershire and Bristol. Community buildings such as village halls, schools and churches can also benefit from the scheme, as well as businesses such as farms, shops and offices. The negotiated price is typically 4.5p less than the average price quoted and most members save around £120 per year. To find out more, call Jill Baker on 01275 333701 or visit www.wern. org.uk/oil.

“The locks and landing areas were very neglected and it has been a fantastic effort by the team culminating in the end result we can all be proud of.” Volunteers Trevor Clark, Peter Barlow and Rosemary Ainsworth are pictured at Kelston Lock during the project.

Team completes lock improvements Volunteers have spent around 150 hours giving Kelston Lock a much-needed refurbishment. The lock, opposite the Riverside Inn in Saltford, has been stripped of paint and then given a fresh coat by members of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust alongside the Canal and River Trust. The same work was carried out on Keynsham and Saltford locks last year. David Fearns, chairman of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust (Bath and Bristol Branch), said:

In Good Health with the team at Chandag Road Pharmacy

Summer foot health Summer means sandals so this month we have some advice on achieving perfect tootsies and good foot health. Your feet take the weight of your entire body so a small problem can quickly escalate into something much more serious. However taking some small steps can help most problems from happening. l Wash and dry your feet regularly and change socks every day. This will help prevent the build-up of dirt and sweat and reduce the risk of infection and smells. By drying your feet thoroughly you reduce the risk of contracting athlete’s foot. This is a fungal infection which causes itchy, flaky, red skin on the feet, especially between the toes. l Hard, cracked skin on the heels is very common in summer. Remove this using a

pumice stone or foot file and apply a rich moisturising cream designed especially for the feet – not body lotion. l Always cut toenails straight across and not down the sides

as this can lead to ingrown toenails. These can occur when the side of the nail grows into the surrounding skin leading to redness, pain and possible infection. Avoid wearing nail varnish for prolonged periods of time as this can cause the nail to become dry, flaky and discoloured. l Alternate the type of shoe you wear to help prevent cracked heels, hard skin and blisters. Don’t be tempted to wear flip flops all summer as they don’t provide support for your feet and can cause arch and heel pain if worn for too long. If possible, go barefoot or wear open-toe sandals to prevent feet becoming sweaty and smelly. Ensure you wear correct fitting footwear as this will help avoid problems such as corns and calluses and will help slow the progression of conditions such as bunions. l Watch out for foot infections

such as veruccas and athlete’s foot, which are often found in communal showers and changing rooms at swimming pools. Wearing flip flops in such environments may help. Veruccas are warts that occur on the bottom of the foot – usually on the ball or heel. They are caused by a virus (human papillomavirus) and range in size from approximately 1mm to 10mm. They can appear in pairs or groups and are flat, rough areas of skin – sometimes with a cluster of black dots at their centre. l Seek advice if you have a problem with your feet. Your local pharmacist will be able to advise on treatments for many common foot complaints such as athlete’s foot, fungal nail infections, dry skin, verrucas or smelly feet while a podiatrist or chiropodist can help with more specific problems, including ingrown toenails and bunions.

Our latest escapade saw 18 determined but very happy walkers spotting sheep on the Shaun the Sheep trail in Bristol. Although the weather was awful – it ranged from drizzle to torrential rain most of the walk – with our apps to hand we managed to locate 30 in the Temple Meads and Harbourside areas, and had great fun doing it. The total distance walked was about five miles and the majority stayed right to the end. Our next event is something completely new for us and has probably not been tried in the national Walkers Are Welcome network. We are having a family teddy bears’ picnic in Keynsham Memorial Park on Sunday, August 9, followed by a short walk around the

park, which people of all ages can join. Bring a packed lunch and a teddy to the grass near the Bandstand at noon before the walk starts at 1.30pm. Entry is 50p per walker and tots, escorted by their family, can collect teddy pawprints on their registration cards at stops around the park as they follow their map. Each child’s nursery or preschool will be entered in a draw to receive a share of the funds raised on the day split with the Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group. After all this hectic activity the Keynsham Brass Band will be on hand to entertain us at the Bandstand from 3pm. Relaxed summer celebration is ‘just like old days’ for villagers

by Ros Anstey After years of village fetes it was decided that Compton Dando would try a more relaxed, community-minded event in the summer, and so the Compton Dando Village Fun Day was born. The successful event on July 4 offered lots of activities and traditional games plus a hall full of crafts and local produce. As resident Gary Pearce, said: “Compton Dando Fun Day was born out of the hugely successful previous village fetes. “However, while the previous fete grew every year it was felt for a few fete seasons at least that the fundraising day would be scaled down somewhat to treat the volunteers to a more relaxed event that all villagers and stallholders alike could enjoy. “It was like the old days,” he said, adding: “Everyone could turn up and man their stalls with fewer crowds and enjoy the

Brian and Liz Stanbury on the bric-a-brac stall; right; Gary Pearce taking visitors for rides on his tractor during the fun day

fun day without trying to be a major festival, and it worked fine. “We may scale it up again in time, but at least for now, we were all very content with the net result,” he said, adding, “and more to the point we all had a relaxed, fun day.”

On the Plot

Last month I mentioned that this year I am growing both red and white flowering runner beans. I sowed and planted them at the same time nut have noticed that the red variety are much more vigorous and have started cropping earlier than the white. This is helping greatly with smoothing out the glut of beans. Don’t forget that you can save the seed of both types for next year. Allowing (accidentally or deliberately) some beans to swell will eventually provide pods with seeds inside but make sure they are thoroughly dried before storing. I have noticed this year an abundance of ladybirds which help in controlling the aphid

infestations so be extra careful if you use insecticides as this will harm the ladybirds as well. The potatoes are also cropping well so be careful when lifting them to avoid forking the tubers by mistake. Also I dig the potato patch again in early autumn to make sure all the potatoes are removed. Leaving even the smallest tuber the size of a marble in the ground will result in them growing again

STORAGE

and spoiling whatever you decide to grow next year. This year I have been troubled by onion white rot on some but not all my crop. This is a fungal disease that rots the base of the onion and makes them loose in the soil and the onion is unsuitable for storage. Sadly, there is no chemical control for this so the only solution is to avoid growing onions in or near the same area again. The fungus,

August, 2015

known as sclerotium cepivorum, can also attack leeks and garlic so next year I will choose a different area or maybe not grow any onions at all. On a positive note it’s nice to see everything else on the plot growing well. The recent wet spell has done some good but watch out for an explosion in weed growth and visit your plot regularly to stop them getting a hold. Hopefully we will get back to some sunnier weather soon as the crops need a bit of both. Most of this year’s sowing and planting has all but finished but you there is still time to sow salad vegetables, beetroot, radish and autumn carrots but make sure you use a variety that matures quickly. If you want spring greens (cabbage) next year so the seeds now and transplant in September or October. Start to plan and prepare an area for autumn sowing by digging and removing all the weeds. Broad beans, peas and onions can all be sown in the autumn. Read the seed packets carefully and choose a variety that is suitable to stay in the ground over winter.

In the Garden July has been a busy month, with the garden making strong demands on our time. The roses have grown to quite exceptional heights and I have developed a policy of cutting back and deadheading at the same time. If an old bloom is on a long stem I cut back quite hard to lessen the height. This seems acceptable to the rose, as it invariably produces another bud on the same stem. With the very blustery weather recently this has reduced rocking at the roots and given other plants some space. I shall still cut again in autumn and tidy next spring. I find it quite

intriguing how nature can direct the gardener. I have spent some time this last month on our adopted garden, particularly with lawn. This rather a grand title for a piece of grass 15ft by 20ft but I think this is fair. The grass has not flourished, and in the last couple of weeks I have raked it four times, each time in a different direction, and then hand cut it. Laborious, but it now has the look of a spring lawn with a light green haze appearing. Some feed and weed was applied and it looks promising. The extremes of daily

temperatures has meant a lot of watering. The barrels began to run low, and once I had to turn on the automatic watering system. But fortunately the rains came and the beds and borders revived. The agapanthus has formed the beginnings of flower heads, the crocosmias and white asters have given their usual patriotic display, and a newcomer to us, the tall scabious, has given a good backdrop but is now cut back. Our raised bed is giving us a very good supply of climbing beans and lettuce, but the radishes, despite successive sowing, only produced one crop of any

use, the remainder being very small. Neither can we produce beetroot. July and August are quite demanding months, requiring much attention and labour to keep everything tidy. The end of July brought several days of heavy rain. I noted 30 mm in one 24-hour period. The water butts are full and the ground soaked. Black spot is ever present on the roses and needs attention. Remove and collect all the diseased and fallen leaves and burn or bin, don’t compost, and spray thoroughly and feed. Hedges are slowing a little so a trim would be good. One thing I have never grasped is trimming lavenders. English lavenders are trimmed hard back to the base in August, reduce intermedia lavender by one third in September and French lavender by one third in July. Now you know. Once again, look ahead to what needs renewing and buy in good time. Keep the grass well trimmed, find time for relaxation and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Couple to be trust’s guests at gala awards

Thought for the Month with Nigel Somers, senior pastor at Keynsham Elim Church I have been fascinated by NASA’s New Horizons mission to photograph the dwarf planet Pluto at the outermost edge of our solar system. The pictures of the planet and its moon Charon are breathtaking. Being so far from the sun, it is a very dimly lit place, and special cameras were needed to capture the images. The distances involved are staggering. Pluto is 3 billion miles away. At 36,000mph, the probe was the fastest object to leave Earth, and even though it gained an additional 9,000mph thanks to the effect of Jupiter’s gravity, it still took 9.5 years to reach its destination. A radio signal takes more than four hours to reach Earth from the probe. The technology is interesting

too. The processor on board is a toughened version of the one found in a PlayStation, slowed down to make it more reliable. The power supply comes very aptly from plutonium and the data transmission rate is slow (1-2kbps), which means that it takes over 30 minutes to transmit a single picture. People have asked if the money spent on this mission could have been better used. Perhaps. Who knows? But there is an innate desire in mankind to investigate “what is out there”. The spirit of adventure and discovery is part of us and will always be with us. We won’t be satisfied until we have seen for ourselves. Of course, the same thing could be said about mankind’s quest to find God. We want

41

to know if he exists, and if there really is life after death. Fortunately, it doesn’t require university degrees or vast sums of money to answer that question. God himself has already taken the first step. John, one of Jesus’ followers, wrote these words: “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side (ie Jesus), he has made him known.” (John 1:18) God has revealed himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ. If you want to know what God is like, take a look at Jesus. Life’s greatest journey of discovery starts when you open the bible. That’s where you can get a really good look at Jesus. Why not start with John’s gospel? You won’t be disappointed!

A Keynsham couple will be special guests at an awards presentation where one church improvement project will win £5,000. Hazel and Morris Powe are founder members of the Somerset Churches Trust, which raises money towards the repair and development of church buildings for community use, and have won two tickets to the trust’s first ever Playfair prize presentation. Entries from 24 churches across the Somerset region - which have completed projects such as installing disabled access to creating a street cafe – are being whittled down to four finalists, one of which will receive £5,000, with £250 for the runners-up. Mrs Powe said: “We have been members of the Somerset Churches Trust since it began in 1996. We just thought it was a good idea to support our heritage. We feel that we ignore the fabric of our churches at our peril. They are part of our history.” The result will be announced at the gala evening in Wells Town Hall on October 30.

Adult Non-Fiction

l Time Out Camping – Our favourite sites in Britain As the summer holidays are in full swing this guide will offer everything needed for the planned or even unplanned camping holiday. Covering the whole of the British Isles, each section gives comprehensive guides such as: number of pitches, cost, facilities, dog friendly and then lengthy outlines of eating and drinking, activities for children and attractions. There are Yurtcamps in South Devon, low-key camping in Norfolk and stunning coastal sites in Cornwall. An excellent guide from the Time Out Team!

Adult Fiction

l Shopaholic To The Stars – Sophie Kinsella This is an excellent holiday read, following the antics of Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood) and continuing the Shopaholic series. Becky is in Hollywood, waiting to hang out with celebs if only her husband Luke will introduce her to his new A-list client Sage Seymour. Becky has set her heart on

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library a new career – she wants to be a stylist to the stars! And when a chance encounter pushes her into the limelight, she grabs her opportunity. But in between deciding on clutch bags and chasing celebrities, Becky loses touch with her family and her best friend. Has she gone too far this time? Has the Hollywood lifestyle turned her head? With the usual humour and flair of the Becky Brandon series this is a fun, fast-paced read – ideal for the sun lounger!

Children’s Fiction

To coincide with the Summer Reading Challenge, why not check out these books: l Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse – by Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell Meet Ada Goth. Ada is the only child of Lord Goth of GhastlyGorm Hall, the famous cycling poet, and her mother was a beautiful tightrope walker who met a tragic end while practising on the hall’s roof. Gastly-Gorm Hall is huge rambling place, with lots of servants and at least half a dozen ghosts. These ghosts include a white nun who

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

sometimes appears in the long gallery and a black monk who appears in the short gallery. However, one night Ada meets the ghost of a mouse and here the adventures begin, as together they set out to solve the mysteries of the strange happenings at Gastley-Gorm Hall. A great introduction to the Goth Girl series where you can meet, along with many other alarming characters, the Psychic Governess, who specialises in the education of inconvenient children, and the party poets Molebridge and O’Quincy. Follow the adventures of Ada Goth and enjoy! l Ratburger by David Walliams From the alltime favourite children’s writer comes a story of a special rat and burgers! This follows the life of Zoe, who begins the book with the sudden death of her beloved hamster and so starts an action-packed adventure. Will Zoe be able to avoid her lazy stepmother or the miserymaking school bully Tina Trotts? But worst of all is the evil Burt of Burt’s Burgers! What has

August, 2015

he got in store for Zoe’s pet rat Armitage? For all new and old fans, David Walliams has created a touching, enjoyable story with great illustrations by Tony Ross. A fantastic summer read.

Business of the month

43

For August, we meet Simon Porter, owner of Varii Marketing Tell us about your company. I set up Varii Marketing over a year ago to help businesses within the Keynsham and Saltford area by providing honest, jargon-free marketing services such as websites and graphic design. I originally began working out of my family’s garage but very quickly the number of clients I had increased and the office is now based in the Rockhill Estate, and I work closely with two other members of my team. What service do you provide to the community? Varii originally began as a website and design agency, providing local businesses with high quality logos, leaflets, business cards and websites to give them a professional image and get their name out. You can even see some of the advertising work we’ve produced for our clients Green Fingers within this issue of Keynshamvoice! We now work very closely with clients on an ongoing basis to provide them with additional support, such as improving Google ranking, generating sales leads, and advising on the best forms of advertising for their business. . What is the best part of running your business and working in this area? Having lived in the area all my life, it’s extremely rewarding to help local businesses grow, and create jobs in the local area. It’s a very satisfying feeling when you help improve a client’s business, and I’m proud to say

we only advise a particular service if it will make a positive impact. What makes you different from other companies? As a new business ourselves, we’re not afraid to challenge old ideas where other companies may be stuck in their ways. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that a client’s business is successful, which is why we always take the time to really understand how their business works – if you ever want to pick our brain then give us a call – we make a great cup of tea too! What are your plans for the future of the business? Within the coming months we plan to grow our team to allow us to provide our professional and quality services to more businesses within the Keynsham and Saltford community. Contact Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions, or if you’d like to know more about how we could help your business. l Varii Marketing – Call 0117 214 0251, visit www.varii.uk or email enquiries@varii.uk.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field Keynsham Town’s season started early with the annual Bristol City community match taking place at Brislington FC on Sunday, July 5, writes our correspondent. In a stadium packed full of families, it was local side and hosts Brislington who took on City in the first half in torrential rain. City made the breakthrough with ten minutes on the clock and went on to put four past the hosts in a one-sided half. City gaffer Steve Cotterill fielded a different City XI in the second half when Keynsham were the opponents. The Ks also had a young element to their line-up, with four teenagers starting the half and another four coming off the bench. Chances were few and far between before the award of City’s second penalty of the game. Wes Burns was hauled down in the area when rounding goalkeeper Ashley Wintle, but the Keynsham stopper made amends by keeping out the striker’s penalty kick with his legs. The Ks defended resolutely and a combination of excellent saves by Wintle and some wayward finishing kept the half goalless until the dying moments. Academy graduate Harper ran clear down the right-hand side, galloped on into the penalty area

Keynsham Town’s Tom Johnson in action against Bristol City and lashed a shot inside the near post with aplomb. Keynsham’s secretary Julian French said: “This was a great day for Keynsham Town and our lads’ display helped everyone leave the ground with an excellent impression of our club. Hopefully this will encourage a few City fans to visit the AJN Stadium when City are away to see what we have to offer.” Preparations are well under way for Keynsham Town’s opening league match of the new season in the First Division of the Toolstation Western League, when they visit local rivals Oldland Abbotonians on Saturday, August 8. Now that the First Team’s pre-season friendlies have been completed and the players are fighting fit, the Ks management team of Chris King, Sean Day and Russell Holt are hopeful of

pushing on from last season’s 17th-place finish. The club play their home games at the AJN Stadium, which is located at the Crown Field next to Keynsham Rugby Club. With the assistance of the club’s facility management company, Brae Avalon LLP, the stadium includes both standing and seating areas, a fine clubhouse and a state-of-the-art 3G artificial pitch, which was installed four years ago. This provides an excellent surface for football and also means that games can still be played in inclement weather conditions where the majority of grass pitches would be unplayable. The first three home league games for the Ks are as follows: Tuesday, August 11 Wincanton Town 7.45pm kick-off

Saturday, August 15 Cheddar 3pm kick-off Tuesday, September 1 Wells City 7.45pm kick-off Why not go down and cheer on your local team? Admission costs £6 for adults and £3 for concessions, including a free match programme. There is a fully licensed bar in the clubhouse, as well as a wide selection of food and refreshments available. You will be assured of a warm welcome and hopefully will see enough to make you want to return! Look out for an update on how the season has started in the September issue of Keynshamvoice.

Golfer Kieron aims for success and the US Talented teenager Kieron Babbage has picked up his third senior trophy at Saltford Golf Club while just failing to beat the course record, writes our correspondent. The Somerset county player, who is 18 years old, shot an 11 under par 60 to win the Anchor Trophy to add to his collection, which already contains the club’s Blake Trophy and Moseley Cup he has won in recent years. Kieron’s handicap has been slashed from five to 3.2 after

his round of 65 just failed by one shot to equal the course record 64 held by Matt Kippen of Enmore Park. The youngster, who has regularly featured in Somerset’s junior teams, has just finished a spell with the Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership at Filton College where he did an A level in B tech sport. Now the ambitious Kieron is concentrating on his golf for the rest of the year in a bid to secure a place at a college in the US.

The World Championships are being held in Kazan, Russia and Siobhan will be hoping to add world medals to her growing number of international honours, which include a gold, four silvers and a bronze at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Commonwealth gold came in perhaps her strongest event, the 200m individual medley, in which she is currently ranked second in the world and hopes are high for a podium place in Kazan. Talking of the trip to Russia and looking ahead to next year’s Olympics in Rio, Siobhan is quoted as saying that she doesn’t intend travelling as a “tourist” but wants “to win

medals”. That determined and dedicated approach has seen the 19-year-old progress from junior competitive club swimming at Keynsham to becoming a prominent member of the British team and a top medal contender at World and Olympic level. Keynsham’s swimming secretary and one of Siobhan’s former coaches, Thea Beament, will be among those cheering for the local girl this week. “Siobhan is a great inspiration to all of us at the club,” said Thea. “Despite her training and international competition commitments, she somehow finds time to come along and swim at our club events to support and inspire our younger swimmers. “So we’ll definitely be supporting her, with plenty of screaming at the TV, as she takes on the world’s best in Russia.” l The World Championships started on August 2 with coverage on BBC2 through to the close on August 9.

Clubs from across county battle it out During the month of July, Keynsham Bowling Club has played host to two more County fixtures, both of them in recognition of Keynsham’s chairman Barrie Davis also being Men’s President of the Somerset Bowling Association, writes our correspondent. Early in the month, the Somerset President’s side played against the Somerset Patrons, and later in the month the President’s team played against the local side of Keynsham. Keynsham recently hosted its

annual fixture against the Bristol Blind Team, and it is very humbling to witness the way that the players cope with their disability, and in doing so show a great skill

for the game. The blind players play along sighted players, who give them verbal guidance on distance to the jack etc. and they respond accordingly with amazing accuracy. At the end of June we reported that on two occasions club members had achieved the distinction of registering hotshots, when all of their eight woods were closer to the jack than those of their opponents. For this to happen twice in a season at a club is most unusual, but it has now happened for a third time. Playing against Stothert and Pitt in the North Somerset Saturday

League, four members of the club’s B team scored another hotshot and our picture shows Carmine Riccio, Alan Waters, Tony Bevan and John Nix with the club flag and the certificate issued by Bowls England. With another two months of the season left, both the ladies’ and gents’ teams are looking to consolidate their positions in their respective leagues, while club members continue to battle it out in various internal competitions as we head towards the annual Finals Day. Race against the clock at famous circuit puts Fred through paces Fred Abernethy from Saltford competed in the Dick Mayo Sprint run by Bristol Motor Club at Castle Combe Circuit last month, writes our correspondent. His Suffolk Jaguar SS100 was running in the unlimited class for roadgoing cars. The weather was fantastic for this event, which marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of Dick Mayo. The man in charge for this race against the clock was Dick’s

son, Simon. Competitors started at 20-second intervals from the pit lane, attempting to complete 0.75 laps of the famous Wiltshire venue in the shortest possible time. Fred was the fifth car in his class to attempt the course and put in a solid time in first practice to finish 11th. Fred improved massively in second practice, but dropped to 12th place as Robert James made a bigger improvement in his Nissan GTR.

In the afternoon, the competition began and despite a poor start, Fred stepped up the bar to reord a time three whole seconds quicker. Despite this, he remained in 12th place. The final run of the day provided the last opportunity for Fred to improve and improve he did. A further three seconds came off his previous best, but he was unable to improve his position as all those ahead also improved. Fred finished just ahead of

a Radical SR8, which was not expected. Most importantly, like the other 100+ competitors, he had a great day out. If you like fast cars (or driving slow cars quickly), then search for Bristol Motor Club which runs a number of cost-effective events, whether you want to compete, spectate, marshal or become an official. Nearly all the club’s events can be entered in the same car you drive to the supermarket.

Bowlers ‘stick with it’ to claim victory Frys Bowls Club travelled to Knowle for a quarter final matchup in the Somerset Bowls Association Wedmore Plate on July 28, writes our correspondent. Knowle went into the night the favourites and the game started that way with Knowle taking the early lead. They steadily edged ahead and held the lead at halfway. But Frys would not let the County League Premier 1 team

keynshamvoice

out of their sights and pulled it back. The lead swapped hands, but it was Knowle with their noses in front for the most part. The game remained tight with Frys winning rink one but losing rinks three and four. Rink three completed the extra end at the second attempt after a tied first end. With shot down, the Frys skip drew shot with first bowl and it stayed, meaning Frys only needed to draw the game to win. With rink two having mounted a comeback, Frys found themselves two shots down with two

ends remaining. With all eyes on the one rink, a composed penultimate saw Frys pick two shots, leaving the game level with one end left to play. The Knowle lead put his second bowl right on the jack, which was met with approval from home spectators. That didn’t last long with the Frys number two following straight up, taking the shot away from Knowle. Frys then added two more shots and, with Knowle unable to reply, Frys came away with a 78-75 win to advance to the semi final.

Frys captain Roger Loader said after the game he was “humbled” at the achievement and paid tribute to the lads “for sticking with it” to take Frys to the semi-final on Sunday, August 9, at Bloomfield Bowls Club with opposition to be confirmed. The past few weeks of play have seen Frys lose only to Olveston, with wins over Page Park, Bristol B, Imperial, Begbrook Green B and Bradley Stoke as well as Alexandra in the Somerset Bowls Wedmore Plate first round.
