Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of our readers

Family ‘so grateful’ for support for disabled son

Community rallies to help little star Luka, 3

While many families are looking forward to Christmas, for one Keynsham household the moment the Christmas lights are switched on this year will be more magical than most. Three-and-a-half-year-old Luka Cerabona is severely disabled, with cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs, epilepsy and the rare condition porenchephaly, a cyst on the brain. But that doesn’t stop him smiling and his love for anything with bright lights means seeing the family home decorated will be pure delight for him. Making Luka happy is the motivation for everything his parents Kim, 33, and Jules, 35, do, with the family facing their uncertain future by “living in the moment”. The couple have recently thrown themselves into tackling the biggest challenge yet to l Continued on Page 2

l From Page 1 help Luka – raising £17,000 to help fund a conversion at their Amberley Close home to create a downstairs bedroom and wet room for their son. The total cost has been estimated at £47,000, with a council grant covering £30,000. As Luka grows, it is getting more and more difficult to carry him up to his first-floor bedroom while a ground-floor room would also give him more independence as he gets older, enabling him to get around by himself in a walker or wheelchair. It would also provide a space for the many therapies Luka has at home, with a physiotherapist, nurses from the Jessie May Trust, a dietitian to check his feeding tube and speech therapists among the many health visitors who come every week. The sum to raise is not a small one, particularly as Kim had to give up work to become Luka’s full-time carer and Jules works part-time as a security guard to allow him to help Kim – but the couple say there is no question that they will reach their target. Jules said: “We are determined to raise the money and will do it simply because Luka needs it and that is what you do for your child.” What the couple didn’t count on, however, is the level of support they have received from friends, family and even complete strangers from the Keynsham community. Kim holds regular sales of unwanted items given to her by friends or received through appeals on Facebook – and the couple say they have returned home a number of times to find

Three-and-a-half-year-old Luka donated items on their doorstep. Jules said: “These items are often given anonymously and we are so grateful to whoever these people are. “We said we will do what it takes to raise the money ourselves, but if it wasn’t for other people we wouldn’t have raised the money we have raised already.” With a jumble sale on November 28 bringing in an “overwhelming” £1,000, the couple have around £6,000 in Luka’s fund, which has come from their sales, events like ladies’ pamper evenings, as well as £400 from the Keynsham Lions Club, £250 from Wessex Water and donations from a number of sponsored events organised by the community in honour of Luka. In 2016, Luka’s grandad is planning a charity football match with workmates at First, Kim and a friend are running a 10k race, while Jules is planning to do

a 100-mile cycle ride with friends. And behind all the activity is Luka, who despite the severity of his condition has surprised everyone with his progress, learning to speak and showing a cheeky sense of humour, as well as enjoying his visits to Bath Opportunity Pre-School, Woodside Family Centre in Kingswood, the Jessie May Trust and others. Kim said there had been no indication that anything was wrong during her pregnancy, but Luka’s constant crying and difficulty feeding pointed to a problem. After a series of checks and tests, including a terrifying MRI scan during which his parents couldn’t reach him as he cried, Luka’s disabilities were finally diagnosed at five months. It was also recently revealed he had a stroke during Kim’s pregnancy, which had destroyed one half of his brain. Kim said: “Your whole world’s turned upside down. We were only just married, then I was

pregnant and all our dreams had come true. You plan a future for your child, that they will grow up and get married and do all the things we’ve done, then suddenly we’ve had to go down a different path with Luka. “We were told he would never speak, then he said ‘Daddy’ and we couldn’t believe it – all the little things he achieves are like winning the lottery to us. “If you ever feel you’re having a bad day, Luka smiles and it all changes.” Kim and Jules are hoping that by next Christmas, Luka will be in his new room, but even when they do hit their target they plan to keep going to help other families in the same position. They have set up a Facebook page, called Luka’s Smile Page, where they keep people updated about their progress, any events and as somewhere people can get in touch. They also have a donation page online at GoFundMe.com/ nds508, where there is more about Luka’s story.

Trio run three miles in support of family Three Keynsham teenagers went more than the extra mile to help Luka Cerabona and his family. Siblings Harry and Molly Hale and their cousin Leah Gould have completed a threemile sponsored run inspired by Luka. The trio were supported by many residents in the Lays Drive and Charlton Road area, with the run raising £250 to go to the fund to convert Luka’s home. Leah said: “While it was a struggle in the wind and rain it was worthwhile and we are all pleased to help Luka. Thanks also to those people who supported us." Alan Hale, ward councillor and Lions Club president, said: “Every so often an extremely worthwhile cause comes along and this appeal is vital to achieving a better quality of

Leah Gould, Molly Hale and Harry Hale life for Luka and also for his parents, whose commitment to his welfare and future is without limit. “It is personally pleasing to me that three of my grandchildren acted in such a public-spirited way without any prompting and thankfully all I had to do was to cheer them on and give them money at the end! I would urge people to support this worthwhile appeal for Luka’s sake.”

Care trust steps in to help charity shop recover from arson attack A charity shop that has suffered a spate of arson attacks has received a welcome gift from a Bristol organisation to help repair the damage. Staff and volunteers at Keynsham’s Mind shop were presented with a cheque for £250 by the St Monica Trust, which is converting Somerdale’s former chocolate factory into a retirement community. The trust stepped in after the High Street shop was targeted for the fourth time since the summer last month, when a fire door was set alight, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. St Monica Trust chief executive David Williams visited the shop on November 18 to hand over the donation and said: “Looking out for each other is what good neighbours do and we’re delighted to be able to support Mind in this way. “They are providing a vital service in the local community and are also an organisation

Mind regional manager Janet Loud, St Monica Trust chief executive David Williams, assistant shop manager Sandra Parker, and volunteer Linden which is very close to my heart, having previously been one of the charity’s regional directors.” Staff and volunteers rallied round after the latest incident to reopen the shop after just one day. Regional manager Janet Loud said: “We’re delighted that

it is now business as usual. We don’t want residents to be put off shopping and donating as we need their continued support, to ensure people with mental health problems can access the help they need, when they need it the most.”

Assistant manager Sandra Parker said the trust’s donation could be put towards replacing items damaged in the fire, the insurance excess or help the charity’s work in the community, supporting people with mental health issues.

What should be future for iconic factory sign?

Residents are being asked to come up with a creative use for the iconic Cadbury’s sign that was removed from the former chocolate factory buildings at Somerdale in October. Talks are being held between developer St Monica Trust, which is turning the factory blocks into a care home and assisted living apartments, Cadbury’s and Somerdale developer Taylor Wimpey as to what could be done with the sign. The familiar lettering, which is six metres high and 22 metres long, is currently in storage on

site – minus the apostrophe, which was presented to former factory employee Hugh Evans in recognition of the work he has done to preserve and share the site’s history. A spokesperson for St Monica Trust said they would be interested to hear ideas on how the sign could be used as part of the on-going consultation on its £60 million development at Somerdale. It was initially thought the sign would be broken up at the chocolate company’s request following its removal on October 2.

Lack of parking scuppers bid for Riverside flats

How can I help my arthritic pet this winter? As winter approaches and the colder weather sets in, it can often make your pet’s existing aches and pains more uncomfortable, or even highlight that your pet is suffering from arthritis. If your pet has been diagnosed with arthritis, there are many easy treatments available that can make your pet’s life more comfortable such as pain relief medication, joint supplements e.g. glucosamine, acupuncture, physiotherapy and heat therapy (or even buying a heated bed). There are other things you can also do to help with your pet’s arthritis during the chilly winter months: l Ensure they have soft, comfortable bedding away from draughts. l Protect your pet from cold and wet weather. l Help them to avoid slippery surfaces such as tiles and wooden floors. l It is generally best to exercise dogs “little and often” rather than one long walk l Try to limit the amount of jumping or climbing (e.g. up and down stairs or onto furniture). Arthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joints and is very common in cats

and dogs. In dogs it can display as lameness, stiffness and pain after resting. In cats, the symptoms can be more subtle, such as the reluctance to jump up, less grooming or sleeping more than usual. At our practice we have a popular scheme called the Arthritis Club. Becoming a member can help to provide your arthritic pet with the extra care they need, including discounted rates on pain relief and supplements, free weight checks, annual blood and urine tests and discounts on diagnostics like X-rays or CT scans. We also have specialist orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation teams that are available if needed. If you suspect your pet may have arthritis or you would like to join our free Arthritis Club, call Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700 for more information.

A bid to convert several floors of Keynsham’s Riverside office blocks into 110 flats has been withdrawn. Under the plans submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council in October, the first, second, third and fourth floors of the former council offices could have been turned into apartments. The ground floor’s existing uses – currently Keynsham Town Council offices, shops and Keynsham Leisure Centre – would have remained largely the same. The proposals came unstuck, however, over the thorny issue of parking. The development would include 116 bicycle stands and future residents of the flats would, said the leaseholder’s agent, be able to use the 80 spaces on the bottom level of the Civic Centre car park that had been used by council staff working at Riverside.

This would still be 103 parking spaces less than the required number as set out in the area’s Local Plan, the council’s Highways officers pointed out. But the plan to use the car park for private parking was completely scuppered when it emerged the lease states the spaces must revert to public use after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. Writing to agents Montagu Evans, B&NES senior planning officer Christopher GriggsTrevarthen said it was likely he would recommend that prior planning approval for the scheme was refused on highways and transport grounds unless it was withdrawn. He said: “The lack of any onsite parking to serve the proposed 110 dwellings is not appropriate and would represent a significant shortfall in parking at a location

Council wants ‘conversation’ on parking A “conversation” about onstreet parking in the village has been started by Saltford Parish Council. Residents, businesses and commuters to Saltford are being asked for information, views and possible solutions to any problems. Following this, the council hopes to be able to put forward a set of proposals to Bath and North East Somerset Council in spring 2016 for possible action. A spokesperson said: “The parish council has no predetermined view on parking issues other than a desire to improve road safety and find workable solutions to parking issues.” The council would particularly

welcome suggestions on parking regulations to improve safety; the possible provision and control of long- and shortstay parking; any opportunities to increase parking provision in the village and make better use of existing space; changing parking behaviour; encouraging less car use and any other ideas. Anyone who wishes to contribute can contact parish clerk Tricia Golinski at Saltford Parish Council office, Saltford Library, 478a Bath Road, Saltford BS31 3DJ or by email at clerk@ saltfordparishcouncil.gov.uk before the end of February 2016. Correspondence should be headed “Parking issues in and around Saltford”.

Hamsters, rabbits and budgie saved in blaze Firefighters rescued a number of pets from a house fire in Keynsham on Saturday, November 14. Four firefighters used two high pressure hose reels and a covering jet to put out the fire in the kitchen, before clearing the

smoke with a positive pressure ventilation fan. Four hamsters, one rabbit and a budgie were taken to safety and appeared to be unharmed. It’s thought the fire started accidentally in the property’s kitchen.

Work to begin on Neighbourhood Plan

where on-street parking is at a premium. It is unreasonable to expect occupiers to utilise paidfor public car parking spaces and this would also reduce the number available for shoppers and visitors to Keynsham town centre.” The application was with-

drawn by the agent on behalf of the leaseholder, Luxembourgbased Episo 3 Tree Properties Tranche C, on November 26. The application had attracted a number of comments from residents, some raising concerns over parking while another said it could tackle anti-social

behaviour in the area. Keynsham Town Council also wrote to B&NES to comment on the plans, highlighting parking issues and calling the application “premature” as councillors felt there should be a “whole site” application to include the leisure centre.

Keynsham will be drawing up its own Neighbourhood Development Plan after town councillors voted to go ahead with the project. The document gives communities more say in shaping development in their areas and can cover a wide range of topics or focus on certain issues such as business and employment, or education provision, for example. Councillor Clive Fricker, who is chair of the council’s planning and development committee, told fellow councillors he felt that without a “holistic” plan for Keynsham, there was “a real danger parts of the town will drift away from the core, central community”. It is estimated the Neighbourhood Plan will cost between £20,000 and £30,000, but there would be income in the form of CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) payments from developers. Councillors voted to push forward with a Neighbourhood Plan and to arrange a special meeting to look at the project in more detail.

Local artists have brought a much-needed splash of colour to an empty shop in Keynsham’s Market Walk. Art Space, a pop-up shop, opened its doors on Wednesday, November 25, to offer shoppers the chance to buy local artwork and crafts. Around 15 artists are involved in the initiative, which will see the items displayed regularly changing in the run-up to Christmas as different people exhibit their work. Alongside paintings, cards, ceramics, jewellery and other pieces, there will also be live demonstrations by some of the artists and the chance to see the ongoing restoration of Keynsham’s mosaics in action. The initiative has been led by Keynsham Town Council, which along with Bath and North East Somerset Council has provided funding, with town councillors Judith Cron and Zoe Wilkins coordinating the project. a pop-up shop came from discussions at a meeting of the town council’s arts committee. She said: “I’ve always wanted a pop-up shop in Keynsham and with the focus of the Winter Festival at this end of the town nobody wanted empty space, so we were all thinking the same thing.

“The response from artists has been fantastic and people are still getting in touch now asking to exhibit and to say they would be interested in taking part if we did this again. “This is good for the town as it creates a bit of a buzz and brings a bit of colour to this area.” Chair of Keynsham Town

Council Lisa O’Brien said: “We are delighted we have the opportunity to showcase the considerable artistic talent in Keynsham and the surrounding area. We hope that, while this is only for a short period in the runup to Christmas, it will show the way forward to perhaps a more permanent creative arts gallery.

“I think this will also make people realise what a tremendous location this is and adds to the draw of Market Walk.” Two of the exhibitors present for the shop’s opening day were Diane Davies and John Chivers, who have both previously taken part in the Roundabout Arts Trail in Keynsham and Saltford. Diane said: “This is the perfect location and has such great windows so people can see what’s going on inside – it will draw people to this end of Keynsham.” Art Space is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm until December 23.

Consider tax hikes for the millionaires I read with interest Jacob ReesMogg’s “testy” letter in your November issue, about those those “unelected” Peers who have been “anti-democratic” enough to vote against the Chancellor’s ill thought out and unfair proposal to abolish working tax credits. It is hard to avoid the impression that as long as the current House of Lords are prepared to “rubber stamp” every Conservative policy (no matter how unpopular) they would be regarded with benign indulgence by Mr Cameron and his supporters, including Mr Mogg. How dare they display any independence of thought or regard matters of taxation as

keynshamvoice

having a moral dimension which may cause them in conscience to show such ingratitude! They ought to quietly collect their daily attendance allowance and let the wiser and more knowledgeable Mr Cameron and his cabinet run the country as they see fit! It is an irony that the House of Lords (usually condemned as senile and toothless by their opponents) should provoke such ire and “righteous indignation” among the present administration! If Mr Mogg is so troubled about having to find the missing shortfall of £4.5 billion he might reconsider his support for the millionaires’ tax cut of five per cent introduced at a time when low-paid public sector workers were having to endure repeated pay freezes with an occasional one per cent pay rise after several years of seeing their income falling in real terms! He might also support increasing inheritance tax on properties over £1.5 to £2 million in addition to raising the very low level of corporation tax paid by such companies as Amazon, Google, Starbucks etc – which despite the Chancellor’s plege to introduce a new 25 per cent tax

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk

on all multinational companies in his Autumn budget statement of last year, will no doubt continue to fight “tooth and nail” to resist doing so. Mr Mogg mentions “the millions of people in low-paid work and the unemployed on benefit” who the Government are anxious to move from a “dependency culture”. I don't imagine people (in some cases with degree level education) who are working on the checkouts in Tesco etc have chosen to be earning £7 per hour! In many cases even such jobs are in short supply despite the much-vaunted economic recovery talked about by the present Government. For people with disabilities, it is even harder to find work. In the north of England the steel industry, with the closure of the Thai-owned Redcar (which has many highly skilled workers), will be allowed to go to the wall by the present administration. The north-south divide is still a reality! Finally, it is condesending to suggest that the “spat” between the Government and the House of Lords amounts to a constitutional crisis which the ordinary voter would regard as “abstruse

December, 2015

and of no interest”. It is not a constitutional crisis and the situation can be defused by the chancellor being less pig-headed in his determination to drive through such unpopular measures as the abolition of working tax credits. Peter O’Brien Keynsham l Editor’s note: This letter was written before George Osborne made his Autumn Statement on November 25, in which the cuts to tax credits were dropped

Magnificent support for local Scouting

The 1st Keynsham Scout Group annual auction and book sale held on Saturday, November 14, at our HQ in the heart of Keynsham was packed to capacity and we raised the magnificent sum of £5,200. We would like to thank all who made donations, the buyers, local businesses, all of our friends, all in Scouting and our dedicated and hard-working team of volunteers. All involved in Scouting in Keynsham are unpaid volunteers and all funds raised go directly to support activities and events for the young people. Terry Dove Chairman 1st Keynsham Scout Group

This year the Bristol School of Performing Arts (BSPA) celebrates over 50 years of association with the Bristol Hippodrome and the region’s major venues in providing young performers for professional productions. Little surprise then that all BSPA tutors are industry professionals, many of whom regularly travel to Bristol from their London base each week during term time. The list of professional productions with which BSPA has been associated over the years reads like a veritable “who’s who” of musical theatre. Productions include Jesus Christ Superstar, Hello Dolly, Evita, Whistle Down the Wind, The Hobbit, South Pacific, Dr Dolittle, Never Forget (the Take That musical), Annie, Oliver (West End), The Sound of Music (and tour), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (and tour), Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (for over 40 years!) plus over

A Saltford girl in France by Nicola Dashfield

Teams at the Football Fest organised by Wellsway students and members of Fry Club Girls Under-18s

Students all pitch in to host charity football fest Young footballers and sixth form students from Keynsham scored a win when they teamed up to organise a football fest for charity. Fry Club Girls Under18s, Wellsway Sixth Form students and friends raised more than £500 for the Jessie May Trust with an event at the new Somerdale Pavilion on November 25. Four teams competed on the new flood-lit pitch in a tournament organised by students as part of the National Citizens Service voluntary development programme.

Ellie Brockton and Adele Windsor approached Fry Club Juniors about holding a charity game and, along with Cory Pritchard, got local businesses on board to donate raffle prizes. Aquaterra, which runs the Somerdale Pavilion, donated prizes and provided the use of the facilities for free. Students from Wellsway got baking and ran a cake stall on the night, played in the matches, acted as stewards and organised a post-game disco and bucket collections during the event. Fry Club Under-18s coach

Bernard Grimes said: “The games were played in good spirit and were good fun, with no losers. A medal was presented to all players after the games and, of course, the Jessie May Trust was the biggest winner. “With the Football Fest seeing the first football games played on the new pitch and under flood lights it was a historic moment in Fry Club football history.” The Jessie May Trust provides care for children with life-limiting illnesses in their own homes across Bristol, Bath, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

Youngsters show breath-taking talent for apple bobbing! by Ros Anstey Youngsters had a great time at the latest meeting of the 5 Villages Youth Group. More than a dozen village children enjoyed apple bobbing and trying to eat ring doughnuts from a string without using their hands, as well as making paper fireworks. “The first three apple bobbers were very determined to get their apple, and got extremely wet, and learnt to hold their breath for quite a time,” said organiser Alison ter Haar. “Luke, Axel and Jean were rewarded with catching their apple. Once the others saw their success, they all had a go.” The ring doughnuts were hung up on a string line and the youngsters had to try to eat the doughnut while keeping their hands behind their backs.

“Some were very fast at this, while others took their time, but eventually all the doughnuts were gone,” said Alison. The children were then able to make paper fireworks out of cellophane or coloured pipecleaners tucked into paper straws. “A thoroughly good time was had by all,” said Alison. The next youth group date is Friday, December 4, when they will be holding their tuck shop again and also enjoying an activity, yet to be decided. The 5 Villages Youth Group is open to all children from Compton Dando, Chewton Keynsham, Queen Charlton, Woollard and Burnett and the tuck shop operates on the first Friday of every month at Compton Dando Village Hall.

It is safe to say that the events of Friday, November 13, shocked the world. One hundred and thirty people lost their lives in Paris and hundreds more remain injured after IS extremists opened fire in the 10th and 11th Arrondissements. As someone who is living and working in a secondary school in rural Normandy, I have witnessed the reactions of adults and children living outside of Paris to this act of terrorism. On Monday, November 16, a minute’s silence was held across France. People were encouraged, but not required, to wear black to observe the “deuil” (mourning). As members of staff, we were invited to discuss the weekend’s events with our students to ensure that they were managing to cope with, if not understand, the atrocities that took place. One student told me: “I am more afraid now than I was this time last week because it could happen again.” Both of my classes fell silent when the topic was discussed and when I showed them a clip of Barack Obama’s response to the terror attacks. It is clear that these teenagers have been deeply affected by the attacks in Paris. A number of them told me that they have changed their Facebook profile pictures to display the French flag, as a mark of respect and solidarity. During the minute’s silence, I saw one student in tears. However, the students did agree that Friday’s awful events have brought them closer together. They do not feel targeted as French citizens, but united with other nations against terrorism.

Police let pupils take charge for ‘Takeover’ event Pupils from Wellsway School were among 140 youngsters who took over top policing jobs for the day as part of the national Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Challenge. Students from 21 schools across the Avon and Somerset area filled roles in intelligence, operations, custody, on local policing teams and in the Police and Crime Commissioner’s team, with some even stepping in as chief inspector. The aim of Takeover Day on November 20 was to give young people an insight into working life while the police force and other organisations involved across the country got some fresh ideas. Dealing with a “bomb on a bus” scenario and handling the media in a counter terrorism exercise with Temporary Chief Constable Gareth Morgan were

among the activities the students took part in during a busy day. Superintendent Simon Ellis, head of local policing at Avon and Somerset police, said he believed the day helped the police force see issues from a different, young person’s perspective. He added: “It is also an opportunity for young people to find out about the world of work, what goes on behind the scenes in the police and the difficult decisions we make every day. “We are really keen to hear young people’s views on policing and how we can work together.”

Dancers’ perfect timing for Tapathon Members of Keyford Dance School joined thousands of people across the country tapping away for Children in Need. The group were taking part in an annual fundraising Tapathon that sees dancers across Britain learning a routine and then performing it at the same time, aiming to beat their record for the number of people participating each time. On November 15, almost 40 students donned their tap shoes, Pudsey ears and matching T-shirts and gathered at Keynsham’s Riverside Suite to await the signal to start the routine to the song Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars at 1pm. The dancers’ families watched the performance and added to the total the group raised – almost £400 – with a cake sale during the event. With 7,363 dancers taking part across the country, the fundraisers were just a little short of the world record for a mass tap dance, which stands at 7,596. But there’s always next year...

A passion for improving and developing girls’ and young women’s lives is what unites a diverse group of volunteers who run Keynsham Girlguiding. The team, which ranges in age from 16 to 76, is urging more people to get involved for as little as an hour a week to help provide the sessions that offer a huge range of opportunities to girls from the local area. IKB students celebrate a milestone for new school Students at Keynsham’s new IKB Studio School are keeping a close eye on their new building as it takes shape – and last month they marked a milestone in the project. The school opened in September and its first pupils are currently based in temporary accommodation in the Wellsway School grounds. Work by developer Kier on their new £3.4 million building is well under way, however, with a topping-out ceremony held on November 10 to celebrate construction reaching the highest point of the build. Debbie Gibbs, IKB Studio School principal, said: “I am so pleased that Kier has reached this crucial milestone in the construction of IKB. It is so much more than just a building and on completion will support and inspire the dreams and aspirations we have for all our students and staff.” The IKB – or Isambard

Local team are the Teletubbies’ choice! Nineties children’s favourites the Teletubbies are back on TV and helping to bring them up to date for today’s youngsters is the team at Corston’s Complete Control. The interactive production company, which creates websites, apps and more for some of the most well-known children’s brands, has teamed up with DHX Media to produce a website for the series, which returned to screens last month. It’s been more than a decade since Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po were seen in a new show and the world has changed – even in Teletubbyland. The foursome’s screens are, of course, now touchscreen and they’ll definitely need an app or two, which is where Complete Control steps in. The team have already launched TeletubME, a microsite that allows you to make yourself into a Teletubby, and the new website will be launched in the new year. Founder Glynn Hayward said: “It’s fantastic that we are creating fun digital content for one of the most successful children’s shows ever seen.”

Well, it’s almost that time of year again, the season of good will to all men, roasting chestnuts and pulling crackers… Or if you are anything like me, eating Quality Street and Roses in huge quantities (just because they are there) and maxing out all available cards and funds to see the expressions on your family’s faces for one morning of the year! In all seriousness though, I do love Christmas and it will be nice to have Christmas Day off this year for the first time in eight years. Policing-wise things, of course, do not stop and Christmas usually brings about certain incidents which tend to peak at this time of year. Firstly, domestic incidents appear to increase dramatically over Christmas week. The theory we have in the police is that family members who have not seen each other all year are thrown together during this week for family gatherings, sometimes carrying the bitterness and resentment of family feuds over a long pe-

It always amazes me to come into work on Christmas morning to see the police cells full of people, who would surely rather be waking up in their own beds

riod. They then ply themselves with copious amounts of alcohol in the enclosed space of a family home, which has gone from housing four people over the year to suddenly housing ten people, and the drunken fights and arguments surface! Husbands and wives who are used to only seeing each other on evenings and weekends are suddenly together all day, every day for two weeks and this can

cause conflict as well, especially with the demon drink thrown into the mix. Secondly, the last Friday before Christmas is always a day we dread in the police as it is traditionally the day where workers break up for Christmas at lunch time and then hit the pubs straight after. Usually by 8pm, it’s normal for us to have attended at least three pub fights or assaults.

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are obviously our busiest nights of the year in terms of alcohol-based disorder and it always amazes me to come into work on Christmas morning to see the police cells full of people, who would surely be rather waking up in their own beds. You can see that alcohol, or the misuse of, is the running theme here! I don’t want to sound like a party pooper so my message will be: “Please enjoy yourselves but keep yourself safe and respect others.” Wishing all of the readers of the Keynshamvoice a merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year. Chris honoured by charity for his ‘tireless’ support and fundraising A former Wellsway student who has walked the equivalent of almost two marathons and leapt out of a plane all in the name of a good cause has been honoured for his support by a national charity. Chris Williams has been named Cleft Community Champion at this year’s Cleft Lip and Palate Association Awards (CLAPA) in recognition of his fundraising efforts. The 27-year-old has taken part in the Thames Walk Challenge twice, walking 28km last year and 50km this year, raising more than £1,000. Earlier this year, Chris also faced his fears when he leapt from a plane at 10,000ft on a tandem skydive – an experience he says words could not begin to describe – and raising another £1,000 in the process. Chris was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and faced numerous operations throughout his childhood, during

Chris, who works as CLAPA’s national volunteering officer in London and is chair of CLAPA’s Great Ormond Street Hospital branch, was honoured at the charity’s annual volunteer awards in November. He said: “I was honoured to receive the Cleft Community

Champion Award. This was given for an individual affected by cleft who has made an impact through their volunteering, supporting others, online or community support or generally been a great ambassador for all things cleft! It was a great honour and achievement to win this award.” A spokesperson for the CLAPA GOSH branch said:

“Chris has volunteered tirelessly for CLAPA GOSH branch, taken on the chair’s role, skydived, run marathons, supported others, and helped the Patient Forums become hugely successful. “He is also the most positive, lovely ambassador for CLAPA and all things cleft and such a bright example to all young people with cleft. “Chris is great fun, always positive and helpful and makes everyone so welcome.” Chris says he is currently deciding what his next fundraising challenge will be. ‘No decisions on sports facilities until site for new-build is chosen’ Bath and North East Somerset Council’s leisure chief has said no detailed plans for Keynsham’s new leisure centre will be drawn up until a site for the new-build has been chosen. Councillor Martin Veal, who has responsibility for community services on the Cabinet, addressed town councillors and dozens of residents who attended the town council meeting on November 17. He said despite the previous administration giving potential developers a “clear steer” there was to be no sports hall in the new centre, that was no longer the case. The initial bidding process, in which GLL was chosen to run the new site, had focused on Ashton Way, he said, but that was no longer the preferred location. No decision had been made as to the new sports centre’s facilities and no location had been chosen, he confirmed. A preferred site is expected to

be named soon, as a decision was scheduled to be made last month. He also said an application to redevelop the Riverside building – which has since been withdrawn – would have an impact on the leisure centre scheme and that talks were taking place

between the lease holder and the council. Town councillor Allan Sinclair said he was concerned that, with a growing local population and rising levels of obesity, there could be no sports hall within a 10-mile radius around Keynsham.

He added: “It’s a legacy and we have a duty to children when considering all the options to make sure Keynsham has a proper sports facility.” Councillor Veal said it was estimated a leisure centre at Keynsham could be used by 60-80,000 people from the town and surrounding area as the population expanded. Town council chair Lisa O’Brien added that with schools and the successful Keynsham Swimming Club using the pool it was “not sensible” to lose spectator seating and that a sports hall was “not a maybe but a must-have”. Town councillors agreed to invite GLL to a future meeting to present detailed plans when a site had been chosen. They voted unanimously backing a motion to be fully involved in the consultation process, expected to start in spring, and to support the views of residents.

Do some digging into family’s roots

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP Ninety-seven years after the end of the First World War Remembrance Sunday retains its power and poignancy. Each year throughout the constituency dignified events take place that are simply yet deeply evocative. This year I was in Keynsham where more people seemed to have turned out than ever before. The terraces around the new Town Hall were packed to watch the wreath laying. Although few soldiers now remain from the Second World War and none from the First honouring the fallen has become more important. This is partly because of the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that have reminded people of what can happen when

become necessary to embed in ‘ Itthehascollective memory what previous generations did to create peace and preserve freedom

democracy fails but it is more than that. As the old soldiers have died and taken their memories with them it has become necessary to embed in the collective memory what previous generations did to create peace and preserve freedom. After nearly one hundred years it needs an effort by society to remember the lessons of history. This is where the simplicity of the services is so helpful. When the names of those who fell in the war are read out, often including several from the

same family, the real sadness of those who they left behind is made apparent. It is not in the great numbers that are so hard to comprehend but in the roster of individuals all of whom had families and friends who would have been left bereft that we can understand the true nature of what happened. Similarly, the two-minute silence creates a time for reflection where those who died but we could not have known are recalled. In this way the fallen are most honoured if we learn from the past.

Anyone who has ever considered tracing their family’s roots can find out how – or get help in digging a bit deeper if they have already begun – with free courses being offered to residents. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Bath Record Office is offering family history sessions across the district, including two in Keynsham, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Two beginners’ courses will be held at Keynsham’s Community Space on Friday, December 4, and Saturday, March 5, from 10.30am until 3pm with free lunch and refreshments. Places can be booked on 01225 477421 or by email at archives@bathnes.gov.uk Councillor Patrick AnketellJones, Cabinet member for economic development, said: “This is a great opportunity for local residents to learn more about their family histories and I would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for making these possible.” Other courses will be held in Bath and Paulton in January, February and one in May.

National recognition with award for village’s rail campaign group Campaigners making the case for reopening Saltford Station have seen their efforts recognised by a national pro-rail organisation. Railfuture, which campaigns for improvements to rail services across the country, presented the Saltford Station Campaign with the Oliver Lovell Award for Best New Group. Explaining their decision, the judges said the “campaign shows a sound knowledge of the rail industry and grasp of technical detail, good engagement with stakeholders’ buy-in, cross-party support, a strong environmental message, and a good chance of success”. Chris Warren accepted the award on behalf of the Saltford group from Christian Wolmar, president of Railfuture, at the organisation’s “Rail Resurgence in the West of England” conference in Bristol on November 7. Mr Warren said: “I was absolutely delighted to receive

Christian Wolmar, president of Railfuture, Chris Warren, leader of the Saltford Station Campaign, and Councillor Duncan Hounsell, chair of Saltford Parish Council, with the award for Best New Group this award on behalf of the Saltford Station Campaign. This award gives the campaign a further boost. I ask the new B&NES Council to take the reopening of the station to the next

stage of project development without undue delay.” Last month, the group also called on councillors at B&NES to help the project continue to move forward by ensuring halfhourly peak services stopping at Saltford were included in the proposed timetable being drawn up for the Bristol region’s MetroWest scheme. Mr Warren and Saltford Parish Council chair Duncan Hounsell addressed members of the cross-party communities, transport and environment policy development and scrutiny panel on November 16, where they said a station at Saltford would help ease congestion in and around Bath. l Network Rail will be holding public briefing on the work due to take place next year between Keynsham and Bath as part of the Great Western electrification programme on Tuesday, December 15, from 5.30-7.30pm at St Mary’s Church Hall.

Throwing open

Close encounters with a range of creepy crawlies and little critters were among the highlights of an evening with Bristol Zoo’s Simon Garrett, hosted by the Keynsham branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust. The group reports on the event.

A tarantula exoskeleton, top; learning how a millipede moves, below

Despite a wet and windy evening many people turned out for a fun event organised by the Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust at Wellsway School in November. Simon Garrett, head of learning at Bristol Zoo Gardens, gave a wonderful informal presentation to the young, and not so young, audience involving much leaping around learning how coral polyps grow and multiply, and also demonstrating how millipedes move – each set of legs jumps forward from the rear. Simon was ably aided by members of the Green Team at Wellsway School, including their use of the iPad to show close-ups of exhibits on the big screen. After the refreshment break, Simon gave an illustrated talk about Bristol Zoo through the ages – the site hasn’t changed much from its opening in 1835 when it was founded by Henry Riley, a local physician who led

the formation of the Bristol, Clifton and West of England Zoological Society. But although the land is still the same, what we see and can do there now is far removed from the early days of big exhibits of elephants, lions and polar bears. And zoos now and going forward will play a much bigger role in conservation, not only through breeding programs at the zoos but also by their support for initiatives overseas in the countries where wildlife is in danger. We also enjoyed some “hands-on” critters courtesy of volunteers from the zoo, including Madagascan hissing cockroaches, giant snails and giant stick insects. Plus, did you know spiders all shed their outer skins as a process of growing? We were able to compare a live tarantula with its exoskeleton (the discarded skin). One is alive and one is inanimate but they looked so similar.

Not all creatures needed a viewer to be seen – a newt collected as part of the sampling

made an escape bid during the course of the evening when it wanted to find its own way back to the pond. Luckily it was rescued from the middle of the hall and made more secure until it could be returned to its home!

During the first 11 days of December the leaders of over 140 nations around the world are gathering together in Paris to thrash out an international deal to tackle climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and David Cameron will be among the presidents and prime ministers rubbing shoulders to talk about the greatest threat facing global peace and stability. The aim of the talks is to achieve – for the first time ever – a universal global deal on tackling climate change, which will be fair and equitable for all countries across the world. Ninety seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate change is happening, and that it’s due, in large part, to mankind’s activities. They also agree that the world urgently needs to prevent global warming exceeding 2°C above pre-industrial levels. This undoubtedly means that all countries will have to take action to limit and even reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Changing for the better with Transition Keynsham

While governments are looking at wholescale policies like decarbonising our energy supply (burning less fossil fuel), encouraging more energy efficient transport and investing in new technologies, we can do our bit to help reduce emissions. It’s not true that the problem is so big that individual actions won’t make a difference. Every

positive action helps to take a small amount of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) out of our atmosphere. And if everyone takes little steps, they will add up to big changes. What can we do? Firstly, we can reuse, repair and recycle more. There’s a lot of energy in “stuff”, and every time we buy something new we’re helping

create more GHGs. We can replace our lightbulbs, insulate our homes, turn down our thermostats and use less hot water. All of these things make sense for the planet and our pockets. There’s one other thing we can do. Producing meat accounts for 15 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. If we all commit to eating a little less, having a regular meat-free Monday for instance, it’ll make a really big contribution to tackling climate change. It will also be good for our health. In the UK, on average, we eat twice the amount of meat that is recommended for a healthy diet. Pledging to eat a little less – whether by going veggie once or twice a week, or just cutting down the amount of meat we put in our meals – is a win-win: good for the planet, and good for us too!

“I have been caring for my father for over five years, with help from several care agencies, and individual carers. I found all the arrangements lacking until two years ago when I discovered Goldcare Professionals. Julie and her growing team have been without doubt everything I'd hoped for in carers for my father. The carers are kind, friendly, efficient and professional and the organisation clearly works well. With other companies it was often the administration that let the carers down. It was important to me that the carers were well treated by the company and I get the impression Goldcare looks after its carers well. Julie and the team have been incredibly flexible - always helping me and my father with our changing needs. They are great with my dad who responds well to their visits. They have obviously helped him with his needs but I think they have been of even more assistance to me - as his main live-in carer. I could not have kept my father in his home except for their support - for which I am very grateful.” M.Tait, Keynsham

Norovirus outbreak prompts visit warning Health chiefs are urging people to spread good cheer, not germs this Christmas following an outbreak of norovirus in local hospitals and other healthcare centres. BaNES Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says it is vital people who may have norovirus do not visit hospitals, care homes or their GP surgery. Dawn Clarke, director of nursing and quality at BaNES CCG, said: “Norovirus is very unpleasant but usually resolves itself in 24 to 48 hours. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to

prevent infections occurring in the community.” She added: “There is no specific cure for the illness and, as it is viral and not caused by an infection, it cannot be treated with antibiotics. Therefore, people with the illness are advised not to visit their GP but to stay home, to get lots of rest and to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. “If you are worried about your symptoms then you should call 111 who will be able to advise on the most appropriate course of action and treatment.”

News in brief Vote backs new park electricity supply

Keynsham Town councillors have decided to look into installing the council’s own electricity supply in the Memorial Park to power lighting at the skate park. The authority has been investigating the lights proposal for several years following a petition from young residents, with the latest hurdle being a lack of electricity at the site as B&NES’ supply in the park is at capacity. Solar lighting was one option on the table, with a quote for the project coming in at £20,679, councillors heard at their meeting on November 17. Quotes for electric lighting ranged from £5,714 to £18,179 with a new electricity connection priced at £6,000. There would be extra costs to connect the supply at the park gates to the lights but, said a report by the town clerk, there would have been costs to connect to B&NES’ supply as originally planned. The report also said the advantage for the town council

in having its own supply would mean that any future developments could also be lit. Councillors voted to pursue installing their own electricity supply. Around £20,000 of funding for the project is available from Section 106 cash received from Taylor Wimpey linked to its K2 development.

Dozens join forum to debate issues

Around 70 residents took the opportunity to find out more about Bath and North East Somerset Council’s spending plans and how the West of England area could be shaped by developments over the next 20 years. The Keynsham Area Forum was held on November 24 at the town’s Community Space and chairman Councillor Alan Hale said he was delighted with the turnout. The two-hour event included the chance to ask B&NES Cabinet member for finance and efficiency Councillor Charles Ger-

rish about the proposed council budget, while the second half focused on the West of England Joint Spatial Plan, which will eventually set out where thousands of new homes will be built in coming decades as well as the related infrastructure and transport developments that will be needed. The next Keynsham Area Forum will be held on Wednesday, February 17, at the Community Space.

Dial-a-Ride invites community to show

Residents are invited to enjoy Christmas carols for a good cause as Keynsham and District Dial-a-Ride hosts a fundraising concert. The audience will be treated to an hour of seasonal music performed by music teacher Mary Sampson and her students. Funds raised will go to Dial-a-Ride, which offers a flexible minibus service around Keynsham and surrounding villages, as well as organised

trips to Bath, supermarkets and more. The concert, which is open to all, will be held at Keynsham Scout Hut, Ashton Way, on Saturday, December 19, from 7-8pm. Doors will open at 6.30pm and there will be free tea, coffee, mince pies and mulled wine. To find out more about Keynsham and District Dial-aRide and its services, call 01225 395321.

Resignation creates vacancy on council A town councillor has stepped down from his post, leaving a vacancy in the Keynsham East ward. David Nelson resigned from the role last month after being elected as a Conservative councillor in May. An election for the seat will take place if 10 residents of the ward request one by Thursday, December 10, by writing to the B&NES Returning Officer at the Guildhall in Bath. See www.keynsham-tc.gov.uk for more details.

Many people will be saddened to hear of the passing of Paddy, known well in Keynsham for her zest for life and quick wit, which she retained until her 99th year. Moving to Keynsham in the early Fifties with a young family, Paddy was very much part of the local community, not only in her support of Roger, former Fry’s director and council chairman, but also in involvement in the residents’ association, her work at The Hawthorns and collecting for Christian Aid. She was a regular sight on her bicycle in the town and had happy memories of friends in the area. Latterly Paddy lived at St

Philips & St James in Priory Road where she continued to enjoy the company of staff and other residents. Her funeral was held at St Dunstan’s, Keynsham on Friday, November 13, with her family requesting donations to Christian Aid instead of flowers.

Band’s EP launch sparks a sell-out show in Bristol

From left, Mitchel Lucas, Jodie Davies, James Killackey, Ryan Moore and Robbie Rowe of Spark The Sail

Two Keynsham musicians performed to a sell-out crowd at Bristol’s Louisiana where they launched their new EP. Former Wellsway School pupil Ryan Moore and Jodie Davies were performing with their five-piece band Spark The Sail, a pop-rock band that already has quite a following both in Bristol and beyond. Ryan is lead singer and guitarist, with Jodie on lead vocals, Robbie Rowe on lead guitar, James Killackey on bass and Mitchel Lucas on drums, with a number of the group having recently graduated from the Bristol Institute of Modern Music (BIMM). They launched their EP Sapphire Deep on November 19 at the city venue, playing tracks from the recording, and plan to tour next year. Spark the Sail have already

been played on several radio stations, including Amazing Radio and Newport Radio, as well as BBC Introducing, which features up-and-coming, unsigned artists. The band have also gained plenty of experience playing live with performances at a number of festivals and supporting The Hoosiers at The Fleece and The Fratellis in Cornwall. They were also named runners-up in Bristol’s The Underdog Battle of the Bands contest, winning a support slot at a London venue soon to be announced. Sapphire Deep is available for download on Amazon Music, Google Play and iTunes. Find out more about the band at www.facebook. com/sparkthesail and www. sparkthesail.com.

Mummers to draw a crowd with their Boxing Day tradition A Boxing Day tradition will return to the streets of Keynsham this year, when the Keynsham Mummers perform their centuries-old play. Spectators will find them outside St John’s Church at 11am, then in front of the library at 11.30am before a final performance at the New Inn, on

Bath Hill, at noon. The play was revived by members of Bristol Morris Men almost 40 years ago, using a script written down in 1758, making it one of the earliest examples of a traditional mummers performance. It involves a cast of seven or eight, including a musician, and features Father Christmas

and St George among its characters. And while the performance follows the old story, there is plenty of room for ad-libbing, say the group, and poking fun at topical issues. For more about the play and its roots, visit www.bristolmorris men.co.uk.

Keynsham Town Junior Football Club has received a grant of more than £2,400 from a fund aimed at helping communities tackle issues related to crime and safety. The club was awarded £2,415 from Police and Crime Commisioner Sue Mountstevens’ Community Action Fund, to support its activities for youngsters in the Kelston Road area with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour. It was one of nine awards totalling £40,000 handed out in the latest round of funding, with Avon and Somerset Dementia Forum, Square Food Foundation and Bath’s Genesis Trust among the other recipients. Sue Mountstevens said: “To know that this latest funding will be providing diversionary activities for young people reducing anti-social behaviour, helping victims of domestic abuse and supporting individuals living with dementia at risk of becoming a high risk missing person is incredibly heartening.” Visit www.avonandsomersetpcc.gov.uk/Partnerships/Projects -supported-by-the-Fund.aspx.

On December 5, Flowers by Debs Design celebrates its first birthday. It has been a very busy year, seeing old and new customers, who have shown us great support both locally and from abroad – as far afield as Hong Kong, New York and New Zealand to name a few. So I would like to take this oppurtunity to say a big thank you for all your kindness and support. I have made many friends through the year, who have purchased fresh cut flowers, plants, artificial arrangements, gifts and locally made greeting cards. We have held two very successful Wreath Workshops and I am very proud of all my ladies who produced some wonderful arrangements. We will be holding more workshops throughout the next year. We have one of the largest selections of artificial arrangements between Bristol and Bath. We sell these in our shop and hire them out to businesses, private functions and local parties, at very competitive rates. All are produced by myself and my fabulous team. I would also like to say a big thank you to Clarksons Independent Funeral Directors,

of course, beautifully arranged bouquets ready to buy or to order. So I would now like to wish all my customers past and present a very merry Christmas and a happy new year from me and all my team.

Checks reveal 15% of blankets unsafe

Thought for the Month with Mike Burke, Missioner and Team Vicar, Keynsham Team Ministry I am writing at a time of heightened public concern following the appalling terrorist shootings in Paris. Such tragic and shocking events can evoke powerful emotional responses – shock, horror, anger, despair and fear as well as national pride. Such emotions often produce robust reactions with political leaders choosing to fight fire with fire by ratcheting up military action. My own personal response appears somewhat puny in contrast, merely following the trend to change my Facebook avatar to the colours of the French tricolour. I guess many others made a similar gesture. Sometimes prayer can likewise appear to be a wholly inadequate response to the suffering of others and a sense of national helplessness.

St Paul reminded us to “pray on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (Ephesians 6 verse 18), but he also told us that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil” (verse 12). In other words, behind the presenting issues of war, terror, poverty, injustice and suffering often lie systems of oppression, hatred and divisiveness. We are called to stand firm against such systems. We cannot always overcome hatred and prejudice by organising a campaign, writing a letter of complaint or going on a march, but we can show that we stand against intolerance by being more tolerant towards others who are different to us; we can overcome hatred by

finding ways to forgive, listen, heal and build bridges and we can stand against evil. A father was playing with his son, cutting out pictures from magazines, when he came across a picture of the world. Hoping to gain a few moments of peace and quiet, he decided to challenge his son and so tore the picture up into small pieces saying, “OK, son, see if you can put the picture back together.” Soon afterwards his son returned to him having stuck the picture back together perfectly. “How did you that?” he asked in amazement. “Oh Daddy, when you tore up the picture, I noticed a photograph of a little boy on the back of it. I just knew if I pasted that little boy back together, the world would come together, too.”

Fifteen per cent of electric blankets assessed for free by Bath and North East Somerset’s Trading Standards team failed to meet safety standards. The free checks were carried out during September and October in Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Larkhall and residents brought along a total of 120 blankets. Of these, 18 blankets failed the tests, which are offered to help people prevent fires in their homes and protect themselves from injury. Councillor Vic Pritchard, Cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “Electric blankets over three years old should be tested every year. All blankets should be tested if the wiring within them has moved or if the electrical connections look worn or damaged.” For further safety advice on electric blankets, go to www. bathnes.gov.uk/services/tradingstandards/consumer-advice/ electric-blanket-testing or call the council’s Public Protection and Health Improvement team on 01225 396759.

In the Garden November went along quite well this year, and I have been able to clear a lot of the garden. Most of the ornamental grasses can be combed out to get rid of the rubbish in them. Crocosmia and similar types are quite happy to soldier on. Cut down herbaceous perennials when they are finished flowering. I was in a garden centre recently and noticed some

On the Plot Winter has arrived with a vengeance but the mild spell was welcome, allowing winter plantings a chance to get a good start. Working on the plot is becoming more difficult, especially when the ground is wet so it’s best to leave the spade and fork in the shed until there is a dry spell. Use your time in the dry looking through your garden books and seed catalogues and start planning for next year. Start by reflecting on what went well this year and consider why there were some failures. Vegetable gardening is all about learning from your mistakes and even the

insulating covers for the outside water tap. They are quite inexpensive and will prevent the tap splitting if we get a hard frost. I can completely dismantle our watering assembly and tuck it under the sun house. It is certainly time to clean, sharpen and oil all tools. There is no doubt in my mind that stainless steel tools, although slightly heavier and expensive, have a great advantage when cleaning. I have had a spade and fork in stainless steel for probably 30 years and they are as good as new. With the cold weather upon us I get to thinking about pruning fruit trees. The Bramley apple trees need some clearing out in the middle and shortening of the longest growth. The pears are big trees and need some ladder work. I try to keep them small but they still reach over 20 feet. When using a ladder it’s essential to use

an adequate length ladder, tied into a sound branch, and the feet either dug into the ground or, better still, with hooped pegs driven into the ground. If much saw work is needed, use a body harness clipped onto a stout branch, and do not overreach. It is a bit of a pain moving the ladder sometimes, but it is preferable to falling off! As I have said before, I do not spend a lot of time on catalogues and seed packets, as our garden is seldom altered greatly. Nevertheless it is interesting to see what is being offered through professional providers. I always feel that the huge areas of blooms shown are usually unobtainable in the average suburban garden due to the size. But it is always a treat to find an unknown plant sitting smugly between two planned

plants, and to wait until spring to find what it is. After years of evening primrose it is no longer a surprise! Now for December. Hellebores have been mentioned before, so do have a look to see if any new shoots are showing. If they are, cut away all the leaves and bin them. This helps to prevent black spot and also encourages the new growth. Hopefully there are some red berries in the garden for the birds. If not, treat them to a couple of fat balls and some sunflower seed. The birds will repay you. Wrap up those delicate plants you want to keep with adequate insulation. I felt very smug this week because there was a frost Sunday night and I had wrapped ours Saturday morning. And now look for the better things in December, spring is not far away!

most experienced gardeners will have problems. If you are not sure what went wrong then speak to your neighbours and you might be surprised how much they can help you. Check your stock of seeds and look at the use-by dates then prepare a list of what needs to be bought and try something new and see how you get on. Don’t forget that seeds need to be stored in a dry, frost-free place. If any of your plants have run to seed, try saving some and experiment by sowing them next year. Ensure the seeds are thoroughly dried and put them in paper envelopes noting the variety. When the weather permits,

get out in the fresh air and continue to dig as much of your plot as you can. The exercise will do you good and the plot will benefit next year from your efforts. If your soil is clay and heavy, simply turn over the clumps and let the winter months break them down. If you have a shed or greenhouse now is a good time to give them a tidy-up. Cleanliness in the greenhouse is important as this will prevent the spread of diseases. Firstly, empty the contents then wash the inside thoroughly. Use a mild disinfectant (e.g. Jeyes fluid) but make sure it is diluted in the correct way. Clean the outside as well as

this will remove any algae. Also clean any seed trays and pots in a similar fashion. Keep any plants being overwintered on the dry side and remove any dying leaves and plants to avoid botrytis (grey mould on the leaves). Left unchecked this powdery disease will affect all your plants and result in major losses. On the plot there is still time to sow garlic but this must be done soon before the ground gets too cold. The old adage is to plant garlic before the shortest day and crop after the longest. It’s not too late to sow broad beans and peas as well but ensure they are protected with cloches to give them a chance.

Art show boosts funds for hospice by Ros Anstey A preview and art exhibition held by the Compton Dando Art Group has raised £1,020 for Dorothy House. Although the day was dull and wet it did not deter people coming along to the village hall to support the fundraising event, with cream teas and cakes also being served during the day. Art group leader Sonia Priest said: “These were provided by group members, as well as local ladies keen to support this cause. “The raffle was a huge success, with many local businesses giving their support, for which we thank them. “An original painting donated by local artist Mary Shaw created a great deal of interest and this was won by a local person,” she said. Mayor campaign prepares for vote Campaigners calling for an elected mayor for Bath and North East Somerset are preparing to convince residents to vote “yes” in a referendum next year. The Mayor for Banes committee is holding a meeting on December 9 where supporters will be able to sign up to back the Yes campaign, which will have the banner Your Choice, Your Mayor. Bath and North East Somerset Council says a public referendum is likely to be held in early 2016. The referendum has been triggered by pro-mayor campaigners who collected 6,818 validated signatures from residents on a petition backing the concept of an elected mayor for the area. The Mayor for Banes group argues that as central Government starts to devolve money and powers to the West of England, an elected mayor could offer strong representation for the region to ensure that it does not become “Greater Bristol”. Philip Raby, chairman of the

committee, said: “We are expecting the announcement of the date [of the referendum] soon and then things will move quickly so we are asking our supporters to come and find out how they can help. Our world-class place needs and deserves the best leader available, of any political party or none.” The option for directly elected mayors has been available to local government since 2000, with 10 cities holding referenda in 2012. Of these, only Bristol voted “yes”, with independent candidate George Ferguson later elected as mayor, effectively replacing the role of leader of the council. The meeting for the Yes campaign under the banner Your Choice, Your Mayor, will be at the Co-working Hub, The Guidhall, Bath on December 9 from 6.30-7.30pm and is open to all. To register interest, email rachel@mayorforbanes.org or go to www.mayorforbanes.org

with the team at Chandag Road Pharmacy Heartburn and Indigestion Oh go on, just one more mince pie! Do these sound like famous last words? This month we have some tips on avoiding holiday heartburn. Indigestion presents as pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen while heartburn presents as a burning pain behind the breastbone. They can occur together or separately and usually occur soon after eating or drinking. Common symptoms include: l Pain, fullness or bloating l Feeling sick l Belching l Bringing up fluid or food into the gullet For most people, indigestion is mild and infrequent, and does not require treatment

from a healthcare professional. However, if you have indigestion regularly, or if it causes you severe pain or discomfort, see your GP. Immediate treatment of indigestion usually involves antacids and/or alginates. Antacids are effective on mild to moderate indigestion and work by neutralising the acid in your stomach so that it no longer irritates the lining of your digestive system. Antacids are available in tablet and liquid form and can be bought over the counter without a prescription. They contain common ingredients, including aluminium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate and magnesium trisilicate. The effect of an antacid only lasts for a few hours at a time so you may need to take more than one dose. It is best to take antacids when you are expecting symptoms of

indigestion, or when they start to occur, such as after meals and at bedtime. Some antacids also contain a medicine called an alginate. These form a foam barrier that floats on the surface of your stomach contents, keeping stomach acid in your stomach and away from your oesophagus. Alginates are best taken after eating because this helps the medicine stay in your stomach for longer. If you take alginates on an empty stomach, they will leave your stomach too quickly to be effective. Sometimes prevention is the best medicine and while this may be difficult during the holiday season, some small steps can often make a big difference in reducing symptoms. Make a note of any particular food or drink that seems to make your indigestion worse, and avoid these if

possible. This may mean: l eating less rich, spicy and fatty foods l cutting down on drinks that contain caffeine – such as tea, coffee and cola l avoiding or cutting down on alcohol You may also find it helpful to avoid eating within three to four hours of going to bed and avoiding eating too much or too quickly. May we remind all readers who take regular medication to ensure they have enough medicine to last throughout the holiday period and if they are due to collect their prescriptions around Christmas or new year that they order their prescriptions in advance – by December 18 at the latest. Have a happy and healthy Christmas and new year from the staff at Chandag Road Pharmacy!

Carols bring festive feel to talking newspaper’s Christmas recording Supporters of a news service for blind and partially sighted residents got into the Christmas spirit a few weeks early with carols, readings and mince pies. The Keynsham and District Talking Newspaper held its Christmas recording session at St Dunstan’s Church in Bristol Road on Sunday, November 21. All were invited to join the volunteers to sing festive songs such as The Holly and The Ivy and hear readings, including one from patron Jean Crowther, before enjoying mince pies and refreshments. The talking newspaper is produced weekly by the team, who record local news stories and features onto memory sticks, which are delivered to people across the area who subscribe to the service for free. Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society William Beckford of Bath

Last month, society members and visitors enjoyed a detailed account of aspects of the life of William Beckford, delivered in an entertaining style by Roger Angerson. When we think of the name, most of us connect it with Beckford’s Tower on Lansdown, but go no further; behind it was an extraordinary life, into which Roger gave some insight. Beckford’s wealthy father died when his son was only ten, leaving him to grow up very well educated but in peculiar and solitary surroundings. In adult life he showed many talents and became an avid collector of paintings and other works of art; he built the vast and imposing Fonthill Manor in Wiltshire to house his collection but had to sell it when bankruptcy loomed.

When we think of the name, most of us connect it with Beckford’s Tower on Lansdown, but go no further; behind it was an extraordinary life

Moving to Bath he bought two properties in Lansdown Crescent, which he joined with a bridge that remains today. Finally, he built the tower and several years after his death his last wish was fulfilled when his body was reburied to be close to it.

A mystery solved

Following the request for information in the November issue, four people made contact with the society to shed light on the origin of the pottery plate dated 1973 and containing the words Keynsham 392 –

Maubeuge 70 in a continental script. In fact, the numbers don’t refer to any sort of competition but to the reference numbers of the Keynsham Round Table and the Mauberge Round Table, in northern France. In 1969 the two groups set up a twinning arrangement and made annual visits to France and England alternately. The visiting group took a gift to their hosts that reflected local culture or life and the plate was especially made in France for the visit to Keynsham in 1973.

This month’s evening meeting is an illustrated talk on the brass industry of the Avon Valley from 1740. The speaker is Tony Coverdale, of the Saltford Brass Mill Project, and he will be completing the story that he started in his talk to us last January. A fascinating evening about our local industry is guaranteed; the meeting starts at 7.30pm on Monday, December 21, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road. Visitors are welcome. Tell us about your company. I have lived and worked in Keynsham for 15 years and I opened Short Cuts Barber Shop in November 2014 and we have just celebrated our one-year anniversary. I trained at Norton Radstock College and Bath College and have been a local barber for 16 years. I work on my own most days but it has now become busy enough to have another stylist, Nicola Turkmen, who joins me on Fridays and Saturdays. What service do you provide to the people of Keynsham? I offer professional gents’ hair cuts at affordable prices in a friendly relaxed environment without the gimmicks! Gent cuts £10 Boys £8.50 (under 16 years) OAP from £6 OAP discounts on Monday and Tuesdays What is the best part of running your business and working in Keynsham? The best part for me is providing a good quality and friendly service to local people. I went to Australia 19 months ago, as I was looking to move there. I did get a job offer in a barber shop in Adelaide, South Australia, but decided not to go, my customers needed me and so many of them wanted me to stay. I made the decision to stay and open up my own shop and, one year later, I have no regrets. The support I have received is overwhelming and I really appreciate each and every one of my customers that has supported me. What makes your service different from other companies? I take pride in my work and think everyone deserves a great hair cut and excellent customer care. I believe a good cut is worth waiting for and I think that is why my customers are prepared to wait at busy times. The best part of running the

Sarah Miller, owner of Short Cuts Barber Shop, with stylist Nicola Turkmen business is seeing my customers happy with the cut and knowing that some customers travel from outside of Keynsham to have their hair cut with us because they know we offer a high quality, professional service. I also open on Sundays, from 10am-2pm. With life being so busy during the week there isn’t always time to pop in after work, so I offer complete flexibility to suit busy lifestyles. What are your plans for the future of the business? I hope to maintain steady growth of business and customers, providing a professional and friendly service for years to come. My stylist Nicola will be with me until the end of February next year as then she will be having her second baby in March, so I will be looking for a new stylist to help me out. As the business grows I would like to have two stylists in the shop each day so people don’t have to wait long during busy periods, but as I say: “A good cut is worth waiting for.” Contact Short Cuts Barber Shop, 9 Station Road, Keynsham, BS31 2BH. Call 0117 239 4031. Open seven days a week 9.30am5.30pm. Open on Sundays, late-night opening on a Thursday evening until 7.30pm.

Keynsham Town FC News from The Crown Field At the time of going to print, Keynsham Town’s First XI had only played three matches in November due to two away games being lost to waterlogged pitches, although a league visit to Wells City was scheduled for November 28. However, they continued their fine form this season, recording three wins out of three in three different competitions. The month started with a feisty 2-0 victory over Radstock Town in the Somerset Premier Cup Second Round at the AJN Stadium. The hosts lost Sam Duggan to a red card after just 15 minutes in the first half when he reacted to a nasty tackle from a Radstock player, but the referee evened things up on 35 minutes by sending off a visiting defender for a professional foul. There was nothing to choose between the sides until the 55th minute, when Pat Davison broke clear and expertly drilled the ball into the bottom corner. Radstock threw the kitchen sink at the hosts, but Keynsham showed great character and sealed victory in injury time. Substitute Anton Dowe broke clear and slipped the ball under the keeper, putting Keynsham through to the quarter finals for the first time in several years (the draw is on December 3). Manager Chris King said: “The game was a real test for the lads, and even more so when we lost Sam Duggan so early. After the sending off, we withstood a lot of pressure from Radstock, but our 10 men worked tirelessly to keep them out. With a change in formation at half time, the second half saw us contain them fairly comfortably and an early goal settled us down.” Next up was a visit to a very soggy Wincanton Town for a Les Phillips Cup First Round tie. Despite atrocious conditions, the Ks adapted to the surface and still managed to play some of their trademark passing football. Tom Johnson finished neatly from the

Sam Duggan scores against Wells City, left; below, Nathan Curnock – both were October’s Players of the Month edge of the box on 20 minutes and second-half goals from Jamie Noble and debut-making substitute Harry Churchley sealed a comfortable 3-0 win. It is worth mentioning that all three goalscorers in this game were only 18 years old, which is ample proof that the club’s youth policy is working. Barnstaple Town will visit Crown Fields in the last 16 in the new year. The following Saturday saw a classic “game of two halves” at Crown Fields, as the Ks came from behind to beat Roman Glass St George 3-2 in their first league game for a month. Keynsham were sluggish in the first half and the visitors deservedly took the lead in only the third minute with an unmarked tap-in at the far post. Although the hosts came into the game as half-time approached, with Aaron Childs hitting the bar, the visitors extended

their lead right on half-time. However the Ks came out fighting after the break and a double substitution changed the course of the game. Pat Davison came on in the 55th minute and was soon involved, creating havoc in the visiting defence before Bertie Abang scrambled the ball home. Davison spurned two more golden chances before fellow sub Ben Harris’ corner was gleefully headed home by skipper Jason Adams with 20 minutes to go. By now, there was only one winner, and Pat Davison secured the points in the 83rd minute with a close-range finish. Club secretary Julian French said: “That was our fourth straight victory and people around the club are struggling to remember the last time that happened! It is great to see the depth of team spirit instilled in the lads by

Chris King, Sean Day and Russ Holt, which helped them turn a woeful first-half display into what was eventually a comfortable victory. The club are making efforts to improve things both on and off the pitch and the progress we are making bodes well for the future.” Please note that the club’s Boxing Day derby at home to local rivals Hengrove Athletic will kick off at 11.30am. With both Bristol City and Bath City kicking off at 3pm, it will be a good chance for fans to see two games in one day to blow away some of those Christmas Day cobwebs and walk off all that turkey! Keynsham’s First Team home fixtures for the next few weeks are as follows: l Saturday, December 5 Wellington (Toolstation Western League), 3pm kick-off l Saturday, December 26 Hengrove Athletic, (Toolstation Western League), 11.30am kickoff l Saturday, January 9 Devizes Town (Toolstation Western League), 3pm kick-off Player sponsorship packages for £25 are still available to show your support for your favourite Ks star. There are also several other sponsorship packages available throughout the season. If you are interested, please contact Julian French at jules1233@live.com or on 07814 609853.

Hockey club’s ambition honoured

After a successful season of inspiring girls and women of all ages to get out onto the hockey pitch, Keynsham Hockey Club has been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony. The club, which has men’s and women’s teams as well as an academy for younger players, was shortlisted for Club of the Year at the West of England Celebration of Sport Evening hosted by Olympic medallist and world record holder Colin Jackson. They were put forward for the honour by England Hockey after impressing the organisation with their ambition and achievements as they ran a successful Back to Hockey scheme for women who used to play the sport, inspiring 18 to join in and 11 to become club members, now playing league matches every Saturday. England Hockey also worked with the club on its thriving Keynsham Hockey Academy at Wellsway School, which has grown in popularity, with 33 junior players attending each week and more arriving each session. Such is the success of the club’s initiative that they have

been asked by Wesport (the West of England Sport Trust) to set up another academy at Chew Valley School, which is currently in its early stages.

Club chair Katherine Janes said England Hockey had supported the club with its initiatives, working with them on Back to Hockey and the set-up of the

academies. She said: “We have regular meetings with our rep, Andy Blackmore, who has said that he is impressed with the work we are doing to compete with the larger clubs in the area and has said we are a forwardthinking club with potential and ambitions for the future. “We were one of the chosen clubs in the country to be given a pair of complimentary tickets to the Hockey Euro Championships in London over the summer as a token of their appreciation of our hard work.” The Celebration of Sport Evening was a fitting way to mark the year’s achievements, with 19 members from the men’s and women’s sections and the academy attending. Katherine said: “As with all club events there was high club spirit shown by all. The evening celebrated lots of roles and the people promoting sport and activities in their clubs and communities, from Volunteer of the Year to Junior Coach of the Year.” The club was formerly Frys Hockey Club until two seasons

October NavScatter, on October 30, was the first of the winter motorsport events for 2015 organised by Bristol Motor Club, writes our correspondent. The school holidays and a date change affected the number of entrants as only four teams met on the A37 near Pensford. The area covered was a little wider than in previous years and spread from Bristol Airport in the west to Newton St Loe in the east. Across this area were several locations to visit with the number of points for each location determined by the difficulty in finding them. Mark Griffiths from Keynsham was competing. Since the departure of his navigator in 2014, he was offered the chance to form a team with Matt Nichols, the club chairman. Matt took the driving seat in his wife’s Mini while Mark took on navigation duties. The weather was favourable, road conditions were good and driving impeccable but this didn’t translate into success. The strategy used was found to be inappropriate and

to provide a fun and enjoyable environment for people to play hockey, to encourage all ages and abilities to be involved and promote a healthy lifestyle for its members. “Our next challenge is to promote the men’s section and already have a Back to Hockey for men campaign in the pipeline for next spring.” Find out more about Keynsham Hockey Club at www. keynshamhockey.club

several planning mistakes and navigational errors meant long periods of driving between checkpoints. As Mark says: “A wrong turn at the infamous Nempnett Thrubwell five-way junction led to us having to use aeroplane landing lights at Bristol Airport to determine our location and direction of travel. “Having missed several point scoring opportunities we came in a disappointed last place.” A change of strategy and much practice over Christmas will hopefully produce better results in the January 2016 event. Bristol Flyers’ Daniel Edozie, centre, leading a training session at Wellsway School

Players raising their game with basketball pros

Budding basketball players can learn from the pros as the Bristol Flyers set up a new “hub” at Wellsway School. Each week, a professional player from the team will be leading training sessions that are open to anyone aged from 14 to 25 who wants to learn and develop the skills needed for the sport. Jenny Lewis from Bristol Sport said: “The hub is open to all members of the community and is a fantastic opportunity for all basketball fans. “The concept behind the hubs is to get people involved and enjoying basketball. “Players can be of any ability and require no previous experience, but need to be between 14

and 25 years old. All sessions at Wellsway School will be run by one of the Bristol Flyers professional players so it is an awesome opportunity to come along and experience some top quality coaching from a professional player.” Sessions take place on Monday evenings from 6-7pm. The first is free and then cost £4 per session. For more details, contact jenny.lewis@bristol-sport.co.uk. Perfect 10 for Keynsham Rugby following away victory at Avon

by Rob Breckon Keynsham Rugby took their consecutive league victories to double figures on November 28 with a hard-fought win away at Avon. Final score 9-17. At a very wet and windy Bath Easton, Keynsham made the relatively short trip to Avon knowing their hosts had beaten them both home and away the previous season. After moving to Avon’s smaller pitch, it was the visitors who made the early inroads with a number of strong line breaks coupled with some well-judged offloads. Despite the strong start, Keynsham were unable to turn possession into points. However, Keynsham were the first on the scoreboard courtesy of the boot of fly half Joe Davies. A sniping break from pacy scrum half John Pearce caught Avon back-tracking and subsequently offside, allowing Davies to grab an early penalty. 0-3. As the wintry weather conditions worsened, both sides fell foul to spilt ball, resulting in numerous scrums slowing the flow of the game. Keynsham then lost flanker Hayden Johnson to the sin bin following an altercation off the ball, with Avon levelling the scores through a penalty of their own. 3-3. The lead then changed hands another two times following a brace of converted penalties from Keynsham’s and Avon’s kickers, making the half-time score nine apiece. Avon also lost their scrum half at the last penalty of the half for killing the ball. With the scores level but Keynsham with the man advantage, the amber and blacks upped the gears and raised the tempo at the start of the second half. A slick line break in the midfield through Keynsham’s towering second row Corey Talbot, supported by centres Dave Fairless and Jack Hawkins, put Keynsham on the front foot. Solid work by the forwards saw Keynsham grind their way towards Avon’s line and after four quick pick-and-go phases, prop Tim Coghlan crashed over for the first try of the game. 9-14. With their noses in front, Keynsham then started to take a hold at the set piece, with

particularly Talbot, Gareth Jones and replacement Brad Newton making a significant impact at the line out, forcing the home side to resort to a kicking-heavy approach to the remainder of the game. As the game entered the final quarter Davies edged his side ahead with another well struck penalty in windy conditions. 9-17. With ten minutes left to play, Avon threw everything at the Keynsham defensive line and the away side lost two players to the sin bin in quick succession, forcing them to play for 10 minutes with just 13 players. However, like many times before, Keynsham’s desire and commitment saw them stand firm and after a hard defensive shift were able to force a turn over and clear their lines. This ultimately ended Avon’s hopes of grabbing a losing bonus point as Keynsham secured their tenth successive league win. Captain Jack Weston said: “It was another well-fought win and in difficult conditions. We were forced to make some positional changes ahead of today but you need to show strength in depth in this league and simply get on with it. To have won ten from ten is outstanding and the buzz around the club is superb at the moment.” During November, Keynsham also had a 46-12 victory over

Gordano at home, a 15-20 away win at Whitehall, and a 33-8 win over Chew Valley.
