Bypass is ‘biggest threat to village’ The prospect of a bypass skirting Saltford to the south is “the biggest threat the village has ever faced”, say opponents to the scheme. The contentious issue raised its head again as part of the widereaching blueprint currently being drawn up to earmark sites for thousands of new homes, employment and future transport infrastructure across the four former Avon authorities. The Joint Spatial Plan and Joint Transport Study were published last month, revealing plans to earmark land in Keynsham for 1,100 new homes as well as proposals for the Bristol to Bath corridor along the A4, including a potential tram service, improved links between the A4 and A37 roads, a Callington Road link in nearby Brislington and – controversially Continued on Page 5

How ‘dour’ 1970s Riverside will get 21st-century look Residents can finally see in detail how the 1970s Riverside office block will be brought into the 21st century as part of an ambitious scheme to transform Keynsham Leisure Centre and create 98 new homes in the town centre. Bath and North East Somerset Council has officially submitted proposals for the £20million scheme, asking to be given the go-ahead to overhaul the leisure centre and former snooker centre, change the offices to residential use and clad the entire dark brown complex in light-coloured materials. And while residents have played a vital role in shaping the scheme – fighting to keep the leisure centre on its current site and to retain the sports hall and poolside seating – this is the first time official comments in support of or objecting to the scheme can be submitted to B&NES planning chiefs, who will make the final decision in weeks to come. Setting out the plans in detail on behalf of the council, planning consultants CSJ certainly don’t hold back in their assessment of the current Riverside complex, describing it as “dour”, “unpleasant”, and as an “unworthy and antiquated architectural intrusion”.

In contrast, the new scheme will “enhance the appearance and attractiveness of Keynsham’s centre” and “aspires to complete Keynsham’s town centre regeneration”. The expansion of the leisure centre will see existing facilities improved and the addition of a learner pool with gym above, and new studio spaces and soft play area in the former snooker centre. A sauna will also be included as well as a new café with outdoor seating. The 98 apartments will be a mix of one-, two- and threebedroom properties and one four-bedroom home with 85 parking spaces – an increase on the 72 announced at a town council meeting in October – 73 of which will be located in the bottom floor of the Civic Centre car park and 12 on the site of the current River Suite, five of which will be disabled spaces. The existing shops on the ground floor of the former office building will be refurbished. The public can look through the plans and comment online in the Planning section at www.bathnes.gov.uk – the reference numbers for the three applications are: 16/05586/ REG03, 16/05646/ODCOU; 16/05574/REG03.

n NEWS Council launches parking survey

An artist’s impression of the glass and timber-clad leisure centre extension and Riverside apartments

Parking is a hot topic in any community and now residents across Bath and North East Somerset are being asked to take part in a survey on the thorny issue. Cllr Anthony Clarke, B&NES cabinet member for transport, said: “This survey covers all aspects of parking policy, including on-street and off-street parking, as well as residential parking, and will help us in developing an approach that balances demand and availability of parking both now and in the future. The council is keen to hear the views of residents, as well as visitors to our area, as we look to establish a balance between the social, economic, cultural and environmental needs of the whole community.” The online survey runs until 5pm on Monday, December 19, at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ parkingstrategy2016 For queries, contact Parking Services at parking@bathnes. gov.uk or call 01225 477133/4.

n NEWS The decision to halt work on electrifying the rail line between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads will not delay the introduction of extra capacity on trains serving Keynsham, says Great Western Railway. As parts of the multi-billion scheme to upgrade the route between Cardiff and London hit the buffers last month, GWR told passengers it would still be delivering planned improvements to services by 2019. This includes extra capacity on the existing diesel trains calling at Keynsham by adding additional carriages from the London Thames Valley fleet, which is currently undergoing an upgrade. A new fleet of hybrid Intercity trains will also still be introduced to serve Bristol and Bath, which can operate on both diesel and electrified lines and will cut around 15 minutes off journey times to London. A GWR spokesman said: “Customers will be disappointed at these further delays to parts of the electrification programme

December, 2016

Trains will get extra capacity electrification plan hitting the Network Rail’s ‘orange army’ at work lowering the track at Keynsham earlier this year even following Sir Peter Hendy’s review earlier this year. “However, we are determined our customers should not wait a day longer than absolutely necessary to see the benefits they’re expecting from what will be the biggest fleet upgrade in a generation.” Rail minister Paul Maynard

announced last month that he would be deferring four electrification projects along the Great Western route, including between Oxford and Didcot Parkway, Filton Bank (Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads), Thames Valley Branches (Henley and Windsor) and west of Thingley junction, which

affects the Bath Spa to Temple Meads line and Keynsham. To prepare for electrification, Keynsham station was closed for nine days in April to allow Network Rail engineers to work around the clock to lower the track to create enough room for the overhead power lines and to carry out work on the platforms. Improvements to the shelters were also carried out this year. The project had already been hit by rising costs and delays and, following the Hendy review, the programme had been “placed on a more efficient footing”, said Mr Maynard. He said the decision to defer the four Great Western projects had been taken “because we can bring in the benefits expected by passengers – newer trains with more capacity – without

despite buffers requiring costly and disruptive electrification works”. The deferral would free up between £146 million to £165 million to be spent on improvements, he said. But local Liberal Democrats said they were dismayed by the decision to pull the plug on electrification to Bristol and Bath. Cllr Neil Butters, Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson in B&NES, said: “Bath, not to mention Bristol, is being treated as if it were on a minor branch line. The Government should think again, back Network Rail to finish the job, and let us have the all-electric trains, with their faster acceleration, lower carbon footprint and reduced air pollution we were originally promised.”

Bypass is ‘biggest threat village faces’ From Page 1 – a Saltford bypass travelling from the A4 around the south of the village. Public consultation is now under way on the Joint Spatial Plan and Join Transport Study and, with everyone invited to read through and submit comments on the councils’ proposals at www. jointplanningwofe.org.uk Opponents to the by-pass idea who have spoken out over the past few weeks include Saltford Parish Council, which says a bypass would be “detrimental to the green belt, the environment, local commerce, and the integrity of Saltford as a place”. Meanwhile, local Liberal Democrats have also spoken against the road, saying they believe it could lead to the spread of housing development and the merging of Keynsham and Saltford. 6 with Keynsham Veterinary Centre

Why do I need to clean my pet’s teeth? Just like us, cats and dogs can get gum and dental disease and, if you want to avoid this happening, regular teeth cleaning is essential. It will also help keep their breath smelling sweet(ish!). Brush your pet’s teeth every day and use a pet toothbrush and specially formulated pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste as it contains fluoride which is toxic to pets! It’s never too early to start cleaning your pet’s teeth; teach them when they are young so that it is something they become used to. When training, always reward them during and after so that it is a positive experience. If you’re not sure how to do it, feel free to call us for an appointment with our veterinary nurse who will happily talk you through it and give a demonstration if you like. If you find you really struggle with brushing your pet’s teeth, speak to us about alternative methods, such as specially formulated dental diets. Unhealthy teeth that are left untreated can cause your pet a lot of pain. When the tartar moves

under the gum line, it causes them to become inflamed, red and very sore. This is known as gingivitis. Without intervention, it is incredibly progressive and can develop into serious periodontal disease resulting in tooth loss, abscesses or infection that can affect other organs around the body. Incredibly, 80 per cent of dogs under the age of three years old and 85 per cent of cats aged three and over are likely to show signs of dental disease. If you’d like your pet to have a dental health check, book an appointment to see our nurse for a FREE dental clinic. Call Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 986 7700.

Search for Roman house unearths fascinating finds A new search for Roman ruins hidden beneath the Saltford countryside has brought the community a step closer to uncovering secrets from its ancient past. Volunteers from Saltford Environment Group (SEG) teamed up with members of Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society (BACAS) in November to carry out a geophysical survey of a field where a coffin from the era, complete with a young man’s skeleton inside, was discovered in 1948. Over two days, with the landowner’s permission, the group used specialist equipment to map out what lies underneath the farmland south of the village.

Having previously found signs of what could be a Roman structure in a section of the field, as well as evidence of prehistoric roundhouses, in a similar search last year, the team focused on this area – eventually mapping out what appears to be a large building about 60 metres by 70 metres in size. A SEG spokesperson said: “This is very close to where the Roman stone coffin complete with Roman skeleton was found in 1948 and in view of the Roman artefacts found at this location this could well be a Roman building. To the left (west) of the building are two large ditches running east-west. These might be for retaining

Previous searches with metal detectors at the site have revealed a number of Roman coins and bronze items, as well as a brooch which is earmarked to go on display in a future heritage centre. Archaeology experts are satisfied all metal artefacts have been discovered so now the focus is on what the stone remains can tell us. LA band’s special appearance at foodbank The volunteers who set up Keynsham Foodbank say they didn’t expect that a few years later they would be welcoming an American rock band to their headquarters. Last month, the team were paid a visit by Brad Mitchell, the founder of Los Angeles-based Bread Over Bombs, a band that combines music and charity to raise funds for the LA Foodbank. Earlier this year, Iain Aitchison’s Temple Street record store Longwell Records became the first in the UK to stock the group’s eponymous album, with profits from sales going to the town’s foodbank. During his visit, Brad handed a cheque for £1,500 to Keynsham Foodbank co-ordinator Alan Hale, who said: “We were delighted to welcome Brad and Iain to the foodbank warehouse to thank them for their interest and support. n NEWS Campaign secures paths for next year Around four and a half kilometres of well-used countryside paths around Saltford and Keynsham have been secured for public use for another year thanks to community support. Walkers, horse riders and other members of the community have been fundraising for the upkeep of the network of permissive paths across local farmland since 2013, when they faced closure because of the withdrawal of government funding to farmers to support public access. Estate agents Eveleighs stepped in to fund the paths for 2014 and since then, led by Saltford Community Association, people who use the paths have raised the £3,000 a year needed to keep them open. Now this year’s target has just been reached thanks to a £700 donation from transport firm IJ McGill. The money raised will secure

Bollards to prevent driving on walkways

Heather and Lucy McGill handing over the cheque to Chris Essex, Hon Treasurer of the SCA the paths until the end of October 2017 and SCA chairman John Davies has thanked everyone who supported the appeal this year. Mr Davies said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has generously donated and particularly to IJ McGill Transport for their generous donation. “If you use the paths be aware

we may not be so lucky next year so please don’t leave it to donate or it could be too late: we need to ensure we have the funds by the end of July. We will now start accepting donations for the following year.” Donations can be made either online at www.saltfordhall. co.uk/Permissive_paths.html or by collecting an envelope from Saltford Hall.

Bollards are being installed to prevent vehicles using pedestrian walkways in the Meadows estate in Keynsham. Concerns were raised by people living in the new development that vehicles – particularly delivery vans – were being driven on paths. Councillor Alan Hale contacted Taylor Wimpey to request bollards at certain locations and the developer agreed to take urgent action. The firm has also agreed following discussions with Mr Hale to reposition a bench at a play area on the estate to prevent nearby properties being overlooked and to introduce planting to disguise a bin near homes on the edge of the play area.

I

t’s been an interesting month in Keynsham with a lot going on. We have attended a number of successful events so far with both the Keynsham Rugby Club and Avon Valley firework displays going off without incident. This year the police events planner, neighbourhood policing teams and event organisers managed to avoid the traffic problems of last year around the A4 and Pixash Lane. We were made aware of problems in Saltford during a firework display. We were not involved but we will look to help put plans in place early next year so that this event can continue safely and without disruption.

I had the honour of being asked to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day Parade in Keynsham. This event appears to have grown over the last few years and I was pleased to see such enthusiasm in the local community

I also had the honour of being asked to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day Parade in Keynsham. This event appears to have grown over the last few years and I was pleased to see such enthusiasm in the local community. I did notice a couple of local youths misbehaving and being disrespectful but was pleased to see a member of the public dealing with this in a firm but fair manner, educating them about their actions. I really support this sort of behaviour and believe that it promotes the values of the town. At this time of year the offences that increase are shop thefts and burglaries. We are looking

to combat this with increased patrols in the High Street and we have already identified a known offender regarding a number of local offences who is being progressed towards the court. In relation to burglaries. Please be vigilant – we have had a few reported in the Keynsham area. If you see something out of place then please report this to us on either the 101 number or 999 if you think it is a emergency. Being a beat manager is a vast difference to being a response officer, and although if a 999 call is made and an emergency situation ongoing I will attend, my main role has so many different aspects. This

week I have attended meetings involving child protection plans with social services – I find this side of the job very interesting, seeing how we can help and support families as they struggle with dayto-day life for all sorts of different reasons. In our area this month we have also suffered two serious and fatal collisions on the A37. At this time of year with reduced lighting and slippery surfaces, please allow yourselves extra time to travel. It sounds obvious but accidents can often be avoided by allowing extra time for your journey. Some of you will be aware that since the Civic Centre opened we have run a police desk there for members of the public who need to walk in and either report incidents or get advice. This post has moved to the front office at the Police Centre in Ashmead Road in Keynsham. So in future if you need to report an incident or get advice face to face, then please attend this location where police staff will be happy to help.

Bargain hunters boost Scout funds as donations go under the hammer Thanks to supporters 2016 has been a great year for fundraising and adventure, say 1st Keynsham Scouts, who have just seen their annual auction and book sale raise thousands, which will help make 2017 even better. Going, going, gone

leader joined in, bringing back memories from yesteryear.

The Scout Auction and Book Sale has never ceased to amaze the community for nearly 40 years and Auction 2016 did not disappoint. During the previous week, volunteers put in many hours, collecting and sorting the hundreds of items donated by the public. Thank you so much to all who donated – you were fantastic. Despite a very wet and cold morning the crowds appeared, Scout HQ was packed with bargains and the auctioneers started dead on 9.30am.

Fancy promoting events?

The Scout group seeks a creative adult volunteer to help them promote events both internally and externally. This is an excellent opportunity to volunteer within the community with a chance to demonstrate ability or perhaps gain experience. Interested? Then email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts. org.uk with your expression of interest.

Merry Christmas and happy new year

When the hammer went down on the last lot at 6pm, there was a huge round of applause recognising how the community had come together to produce yet another great day. The amount raised from the event and the sale of refreshments was nearly £5,000, an amazing total. This money will be used to cover some of the normal operating costs of Scouting in Keynsham. Sixty Keynsham Cubs and leaders recently joined more than 800 other Cubs from across the area on a visit to the Helicopter Museum at Weston-super-Mare. They enjoyed an interactive day finding out about helicopters and how they work, with a chance to get in the cockpits. Simply lots of fun. We even heard a rumour that more than one

A huge thank you from Keynsham Scouts to all members of the community who have supported us in 2016. You can all look back on a year that has seen more of our young people than ever enjoy adventure activities with expeditions, small camps and large camps (even Bear Grylls poked his head in at a distance), weekly challenges, plus many learning and development activities such as working with Keynsham in Bloom, visits to fire and police stations, cooking – in fact, too many to mention. There has been so much happening and let’s not forget the Under the Feet of Giants appeal, which is 80 per cent of the way to its target. All of this would not be possible without you, the readers, your support and the volunteers who work with the young people directly. A special thanks as well for the team at Keynshamvoice for allowing us to tell our stories and share our events. We look forward to 2017 and what that might bring, hopefully not least a new floor for the HQ. So put your feet up, take a slight rest and then join us again for what promises to be a truly memorable year.

Footballers do primary proud with schools tournament win Young footballers from a Keynsham primary have seen off competition from 20 local schools to lift this year’s Bath and Keynsham Primary Football Cup. St Keyna’s under-11s team claimed victory in the tournament at Odd Down Sports Centre last month, an achievement made all the more impressive by the fact it was only the second time the school had taken part. The group of Year 5 and 6 girls and boys are coached by teacher Michael Pope and will now go on to represent the area in the Somerset schools tournament, held at Bridgwater in January, when they will run out on to the pitch in a new kit sponsored by Gregory’s estate agents. Mr Pope said a number of

the pupils had played in the under-11s team last year and had developed into a strong side with “great camaraderie and spirit”. He added: “It has been a real pleasure to see the

children develop and take great enjoyment from playing together. We're all looking forward to January's tournament where we hope to do St Keyna proud in our brand new kit.”

A textbook delivery for new classroom Building projects always have their challenges, but when a new classroom needs to be lifted over the roof of the main school building it’s time to call in the experts! A 70-metre crane was set up in front of St Keyna Primary School on November 26 to manoeuvre a new room for the expanding Early Years department into place. Watched by residents, members of staff and pupils, the room was dropped onto the foundations in four sections where contractors Mealing will get it ready for classes in January. Head teacher Adrienne Hughes said: “The children have really enjoyed watching the builders at work and have been playing construction themselves – they even have their own half-size cement mixer to use! Mealing, who have been leading the project, have been a pleasure to work with and our staff have been amazing at coping with disruption. We can’t wait to move into the building in the new year.”

Head appointed as a ‘National Leader’ A head teacher of a Keynsham primary has been appointed to help support schools in challenging circumstances across the country. Dr Matthew Cottrell, right, head teacher at St John’s Church of England Primary School, has been selected as a National Leader of Education by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. St John’s has been named a National Support School. Dr Cottrell, who is also deputy chief executive and director of primary at Wellsway Multi Academy Trust (WMAT), is among 80 head teachers to have been chosen in the latest round of appointments.

He said: “It is wonderful that the outstanding efforts of our staff to provide the very highest quality education for the children in our care have been recognised. We are extremely proud of our collective achievements and look forward to sharing our strengths with other schools.” Roger Pope, chairman of the NCTL, said the aim was to spread educational excellence everywhere, with head teachers improving youngsters’ life chances in more than just their own school. Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of WMAT, said: “This is a major achievement for Dr Cottrell and for the trust and is richly deserved. Our trust is committed to collaboration with other schools and multi-academy trusts as well as between our own academies.”

Students from Wellsway School performed at the Music for Youth Proms on November 14 Photo: Music for Youth/Alick Cotterill

Students take to world-famous stage for musical premiere at Youth Proms It’s a venue that has welcomed internationally renowned performers and hosts the famous BBC Proms each year, and last month a group of Wellsway students got to take to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall. They were among 150 young musicians from schools across Bath and North East Somerset taking part in a world premiere at the Music for Youth Prom. Organised by Music for Youth,

the students performed a piece called A Shakespearean Triptych, a commission by Philip Harper written for a choir of more than 400 voices and a wind band of 150 musicians. The youngsters, all members of the Bath and North East Somerset Music Hub, had been rehearsing since September but only met for their first mass run-through at the Pavilion in Bath on November 6, just days

before the performance on November 14. They were joined for the show, which was attended by B&NES Council chairman Councillor Alan Hale, by young musicians from Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire. Councillor Michael Evans, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “This is a first for young musicians from our area – they have never before

performed en masse at the Royal Albert Hall. We’re incredibly proud of this achievement.” The Bath & North East Somerset Music Hub is a partnership led by Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Music Service, which aims to create a high quality programme of music education for children and young people both in and out of school. n NEWS Catch Santa’s sleigh as he takes a tour

Volunteers from the Lions Club of Keynsham and District are accompanying Father Christmas as he makes a tour of Keynsham and Saltford once again this year. The special guest will be out and about in his illuminated sleigh visiting various neighbourhoods in the run-up to Christmas as well as stopping off at local supermarkets to meet residents. See a full list of the dates, times and locations you can meet Father Christmas on page 51. Last year, Santa’s visit helped the Lions raise more than £2,000 which was used to support many good causes in the area and beyond. Causes and projects supported by the club in 2016 included the Bath-based Young Carers Centre and the Bristol Children’s Help Society as well as providing gifts of clothing to youngsters visiting the UK from Belarus with the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity. This month, the fundraisers are hosting an afternoon tea party for local older people and providing a coach to transport young members of Keynsham Mencap Society to a pantomime. Donations were also made to Lions Club International to provide support in times of crisis around the world and to help tackle blindness across Africa. KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Our green-fingered volunteers are no fair-weather gardeners! Proving that Keynsham in Bloom isn’t just for warm summer days, volunteers have been braving the colder weather to brighten up winter and prepare for spring, reports chairman Denise James

espite the darker evenings and shorter days, November has been positively blooming, with planting being carried out throughout the town. More than 25 volunteers from Keynsham Rotary, Community@67, St Keyna Green Team and Keynsham in Bloom gave up a Saturday morning and gathered to plant up 5,000 crocus corms along Queens Road. The event was part of the Purple4Polio campaign which has been co-ordinated by Rotary clubs for over 30 years. It was great to see so many people working together and helping to raise the profile of this very important campaign. I’m sure many of our readers can still remember knowing someone who had been diagnosed with polio. Thankfully now there are only two countries where polio is still a problem. Everyone is now looking forward to February, when we will all be able to see a splash of purple colour outside the Queens Road shops. We were all treated to some lovely tea and cake, kindly provided by Community@67. Keynsham in Bloom would like to thank Keynsham Rotary and especially Nigel Hutchings for approaching us and encouraging us all to take part in this campaign. Nigel also gave a short talk on the Purple4Polio campaign and the difference the campaign has made in eradicating polio across the world. We look forward to working with Keynsham Rotary again next year as part of the campaign. The High Street planters have all now been replenished with

seasonal bedding, although it did seem a shame to remove some of the plants as they were still in full bloom from the summer. We would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors, Avon Dental Practice, Davies & Way, Morecraft Drury, HJ Paget Commercial Property, Timber Craft and Sportscene. Without their support we would struggle to maintain the planters. However, there are still six planters that are in need of a sponsor, so if anyone would like to know more, please get in touch via the Keynsham Town Council office at 15-17 Temple Street or on 0117 986 8683. Keynsham Railway Station also received a visit from Bloom

volunteers and all the troughs have now been replanted. Another big thank you to Wyevale Garden Centre, Hicks Gate for supporting us and supplying the plants. We are also hoping to organise a working party in the new year and will be carrying out a litter pick around the car parking area, as well as working on the community garden area. Pompoms have been coming in by the bag full, ahead of our yarn bombing event, during which we decorated the High Street with dozens of colourful pompoms, as part of the Winter Festival. Thank you to everyone who took the time to make and donate them

s a regular contributor to and reader of local newspapers I am strongly biased in their favour. They perform an important role in our community by keeping us informed of events that will not make the national news. This is sometimes uplifting stories about local activities or the success of pupils at school but it can be sad news about accidents or exciting tales about crimes. Unfortunately, these papers are under threat. The internet has changed the financial

Many famous people have been exposed as hypocrites or worse by national newspapers... using their considerable resources they have succeeded in setting up a few organisations to regulate the press

dynamic especially in relation to classified advertisements which used to be their main income generator but have been lost to the World Wide Web. This is a challenge but not an unreasonable one, whereas the threat from disgruntled celebrities who want to muzzle free speech is a selfinflicted wound. In recent news many famous people have been exposed as hypocrites or worse by national newspapers. Understandably they do not like these reports and have fought back against the medium that has embarrassed them. Using their considerable resources and a few sad stories about the victims of crime they have succeeded in setting up a few organisations to regulate the press. These are not

compulsory as yet but the threat of financial penalties for those who do not join may become severe. If this were to happen the nationals could pay the bills but local papers would face closure. The Government is currently carrying out a consultation with the public to see if it should destroy the free press and bankrupt local papers in favour of libidinous luminaries. I urge readers to save papers under threat by filling in the online survey via www.research. net/r/9WH5LV3 or writing to Press Policy, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, 4th Floor, 100 Parliament Street, London, SW1A 2BQ or email presspolicy@culture. gov.uk www.jacobreesmogg.com

LETTERS Shoppers will go where they can park

With all the new houses being built in Keynsham and the severe reduction in bus services, it’s becoming extermely difficult for people young and old to get to and from the High Street with shopping. Taking a car is not an alternative as when you get to the Ashton Way car park, which is the main one for High Street shoppers, there are no spaces available due to so many spaces being used by long-stay parking permits for B&NES employees from nearby offices. It would be interesting to find out how many spaces they have at their disposal. People will use their cars to go further afield where they can park to shop, eventually reducing Keynsham High Street to cafes, estate agents and charity shops. Keynsham resident

Town centre toilets should be a priority

This is a very personal question – have you ever been taken short in Keynsham? No? You are very lucky, I’m sure many people have! This all comes down to the lack of toilets: the block in Ashton Way was shut down, which we all know was a central point and used by many, and with all the money spent on the new centre they couldn’t build a toilet for the public. Disgusting. I, among many others, would like to see more toilets in Keynsham. If they want to encourage visitors, this is not much to ask, is it? Please make this a priority. Mr D Woodham Burnett

was where the purpose-built alleyway, leading from the top of Orwell Drive, leads directly to the Wellsway. I felt this was the obvious place to enable people to walk directly to about 60 yards from Steel Mills. I asked the Keynsham MP Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg to visit the site. He did so and fully supported me, writing to the council in March 2015. He received a reply to the effect that it was not in the budget for 2014/15. Since then I have had continual correspondence to the present council without success. I feel I must ask for your support by writing to the following: Councillor Dr Anthony Clarke,

Deal step towards joined-up care

Earlier this month, councillors took an important decision over the future of community health and social care services in Bath and North East Somerset. Much has been made in the press about the decision by the council and Clinical Commissioning Group to award Virgin Care the contract to oversee a number of health and care services in our area. However, among the noise surrounding this debate, I feel that a few crucial issues have been lost – namely, how this decision came about, the way in which the decision was reached, and why this outcome was judged to be in the best interests of local residents. Fundamentally, the decision the council was asked to take was whether or not to endorse the recommendations of an

23 independent panel, which evaluated the bids to run community health and care services in B&NES. This evaluation panel consisted of GPs, clinicians, subject experts, and – crucially – local people who use our health and social care services. The work this panel undertook in evaluating the proposals over many months was thorough, rigorous and fair. All aspects were looked into – including Virgin Care’s financial arrangements and their record elsewhere in the country. The conclusion of this panel was that Virgin’s bid scored significantly higher than the consortium led by Sirona. From the very outset of this process, the one and only concern of all those involved has been to ensure the best possible care for our residents. B&NES has for many years been a national leader when it comes to integrating our health and social care services, and these plans will take this even further. Turn to Page 24

LETTERS From Page 23 At the heart of our plans will be providing more joined-up services for our residents – treating each individual as a “whole person” and bringing together the different agencies to look at all aspects of their health and care needs. At a time when we have a growing older population, with increasing cost pressures on the NHS, providing these sorts of joined-up health and care services in the community is absolutely vital to relieving pressure on our hospitals and ensuring our health services are sustainable for the future. I believe that the decision B&NES and the CCG took represents an important, and in fact exciting, step towards delivering the high-quality, joined-up health and care services all our residents deserve.

On behalf of St John’s Church Keynsham I would like to thank Tesco in Keynsham for supplying us with a generous donation of 240 mince pies for the Winter Festival and other Christmas events. This is the fifth year that they have given us such a donation and it is much appreciated. Hazel Powe

Crocuses a reminder of our polio battle At the end of October, several members of our club planted purple crocuses at Queens Road, Keynsham, in support of the Rotary Purple4Polio Campaign. They were joined by the deputy town clerk, and representatives of Keynsham in Bloom, Community@67, and the Keynsham Green Team, celebrating End Polio Day 2016.

Polio is a crippling disease that was once endemic throughout most of the world, including the UK, and at one time killed 500,000 people every year and left thousands crippled for life. Vaccines were produced which, with mass vaccination campaigns in the US, started to curb the spread of polio. With its worldwide membership, Rotary International launched its polio eradication campaign in 1985 and subsequently has contributed over US $1.6 billion to help vaccinate 2.5 billion children in 122 countries, and has worked closely with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and latterly with support from the Bill & Melinda

Gates Foundation, to eliminate this terrible disease Some Rotary members have even assisted the campaign by travelling to hot spots to help administer the drop of vaccine orally. Once the children have been vaccinated, their little finger is dipped into a purple dye to register their immunisation. So simple but so effective that now the number of cases worldwide is down to a handful. Hence the reason for planting purple crocuses. The fight is not over yet as the disease can rear its ugly head again and we need to be vigilant and keep up the immunisation programme to ensure this does not happen. In time, our goal is to eradicate the disease completely. Our purple crocuses remind us of our campaign and in bringing some springtime cheer, we also acknowledge the public support from Keynsham and Saltford residents who, over the years, have contributed so generously to our cause. Many thanks to you all. Adrian Dodd on behalf of Keynsham Rotary Club

Marina plan is set for appeal hearing The arguments for and against a bid to build a marina on Keynsham’s Broadmead peninsula will be heard by a government planning inspector in January. The plan to create a 326-berth leisure marina on the River Avon was thrown out by Bath and North East Somerset councillors in January on a number of grounds, including a lack of safe pedestrian and cycle routes, the loss of agricultural land, the inappropriate development of the green belt and the impact on the surrounding environment. However, Christopher Whitehouse, agent for developer Enzygo Ltd argued there were special circumstances to allow the development in the green belt and that the marina would directly create eight full-time jobs

and generate £300,000 (GVA) in the local economy. The firm has appealed the decision and a hearing, where affected parties will be able to put their case, will now be held over two days from January 18 at the Guildhall in Bath. Chairman of the River Regeneration Trust Dave Laming, who objected to the plan originally ,said he would be attending the hearing as would a number of people living on boats at the site who fear they will be evicted if the scheme gets the go-ahead.

A unique new retirement community opens its doors On Monday, November 14, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham Society opened the doors of its newest retirement house on Westbourne Avenue, just minutes from Keynsham town centre. Situated in the peaceful cul-de-sac, the newly refurbished house offers 14 studio and onebedroom apartments to residents. The apartments are rented unfurnished and residents can decorate and style them to their own taste. Abbeyfield is unique because its fees are based on an ‘all-inclusive rent’ which includes council tax; all utility bills (with exception of phone line); home cooked meals and larder items. The new house will also offer trips out and around the area, as well as occasional entertainment inside the house, such as live music, or quiz evenings.

It’s an ideal option for older people who are just struggling to live on their own but don’t want a ‘care home’ or ‘residential care’; or for those wishing to downsize and move nearer their family. Chief executive Frances Stretton says: “We currently have Abbeyfield houses in the Bristol areas of Redland, Henleaze, Easter Compton and Hanham, and are delighted to be opening our fifth house now, in Keynsham. “Our current residents tell us how much they value being able to remain independent but without the stresses of running their own home. And because there’s always a team member available in the house, residents know they’ve got someone to help should they need it.” The Abbeyfield Society was

established in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gomm who lived on Abbeyfield Road in London. He recognized that older people were becoming more and more isolated, and was concerned about loneliness and wanted to provide a safe and enjoyable community for them – something that is still very topical today. This ethos still sits at the core of the society’s work today. “The new house in Keynsham will offer the perfect blend of independence, support, privacy and companionship to residents,” continues Frances. “You can be involved in any aspects of the house community and you know there’s always someone there to talk to, or to play an evening board game. But then you can enjoy the privacy of your own home when you want to.”

n NEWS Cyclists urged to be bright this winter

The return of darker mornings and evenings has prompted a reminder to cyclists to “be seen and be safe”. Bath and North East Somerset Council is warning riders to ensure they are as visible as possible when on the roads in the dark and in bad weather. Anthony Clarke, B&NES cabinet member for transport, said: “We suggest wearing bright colours during the day and reflective clothing after dark. If you are cycling in the dark it is important to wear a brightly coloured reflective waistcoat or reflective belt and you may wish to consider a helmet-mounted light or an additional rear light or reflector on the back of your coat or bag. Motorists and cyclists unsure if it is dark enough for lights should switch them on.” The UK legal requirement for cycling after dark is that the bicycle must have one front white light, one rear red light and one red rear reflector.

Vouchers serve up a saving on sport bookings at centre Families in Keynsham are being given an extra incentive to take up sports together with the launch of a new initiative. Keynsham Town Council has teamed up with Keynsham Leisure Centre to offer badminton court bookings at half price from 4pm to 6pm on weekdays and all day Sunday. People can drop in to the town council offices at 15-17 Temple Street to pick up a voucher and then book a court at the leisure centre. The courts can be used for a number of activities besides badminton, including table tennis or even basketball, which is usually played over two of the courts. The initiative was proposed by Labour town councillor Dave Biddleston and was given the full backing of the town council. Mr Biddleston said: “This offer is open to anyone but was particularly inspired by a wish to encourage families to enjoy an activity together in the hours after school or at the weekend. “Not only does it promote health and fitness among residents, it’s also a good example of two organisations working together for the benefit of the community. “By visiting the town council office, people will be able to get information on the many other activities in Keynsham, including events at The Space and Keynsham Music Festival, and the initiative also encourages

Welcome To The World Welcome to the world little baby, Come on in little man, A miracle now has unfolded, Another new life now began. I’m sorry that it’s all so chaotic, That it’s not such a perfect place, I’m afraid that we’ve been so neglectful, What we’ve done to it is a disgrace. Well at times we did make an effort, And maybe we had some success. Maybe there’s some little thing that we did, That did not add to the mess.

Keynsham Leisure Centre community sports manager Mark Harrison, left, and Councillor Dave Biddleston with the court vouchers people to use the leisure centre at its quieter times.” The leisure centre’s community sports manager Mark Harrison said he was delighted to support the scheme and that visitors would also be able to find out more about the many clubs and activities on offer at the centre during their visits. Vouchers for 50 per cent off a court booking between 4pm and

6pm Monday to Friday and all day Sunday are available from the town council offices, which are open from 9am to 4pm weekdays. Keynsham Leisure Centre is operated by Better and will be undergoing a major redevelopment as part of a scheme to transform the Riverside complex, with completion pencilled in for 2018.

I’ll watch you grow up and I’ll help you, But some day I’m afraid we must part, And hope that when that day comes between us, I’ll have helped you make a good start. I know that you’re weak and you’re helpless, My tiny, wee Little-Boy-Blue, But grow up in strength and in wisdom, For someday it will be up to you. George Liddell

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Photo: Michiel Jelijs

Ashton Court

Last month’s meeting of the society heard campaigner Peter Weeks describe how he became interested in Bristol’s neglected stately home, the story of the building and his work to try and secure its future. The first house was built on the site in the 1390s and in 1546, John Smyth, twice mayor of Bristol, became the owner; the land would stay in his family’s possession for exactly 400 years. Over this period the house was altered and extended many times. It is clear from the picture that it is no uniform style and this is because the different generations of Smyths added wings in the fashion of the period. Jacobean, Palladian, neo-Gothic and Victorian are all represented and in 1885 a cast iron and glass winter garden was added. Bristol City Council bought the entire estate, including the house, in 1959 for £130,000. Their main interest, however, was in the land – 850 acres of parkland, close to the city centre. The house lay neglected until a restoration project started in 1974. The roof was repaired and some rooms restored before the money ran out – these are now used for weddings, meetings and as a café. None of the upstairs rooms nor any of the north-west wing have been touched and they are now in very poor condition. Peter explained that work continues to try and find a future for the building – once restored to its former glory, it must be able to generate enough income to cover its running costs. So far, no answer has been found but it would be a great pity if this magnificent structure cannot be saved for future generations.

Until the extensive demolition and redevelopment that started in the late 1950s, Temple Street was an old thoroughfare lined with cottages, a few shops and three public houses.

Trim down your waste and recycle for a green Christmas It’s not just the leftover turkey we all have to deal with following Christmas – all those presents and decorations leave plenty behind too. Bath and North East Somerset Council is calling on residents to recycle the waste that accumulates over the festive period, from wrapping paper and packaging to food containers and even the tree. There will be no Boxing Day recycling collections, so residents whose collection day falls on a Monday won’t have a collection until Monday, January 2. All other collection days are unaffected. Recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. There will be no garden waste collections for a fortnight

between Boxing Day and Friday, January 6, and they will resume on Monday, January 9. Real Christmas trees will be collected for free from Monday, January 9, until Friday, January 27, with garden waste. Trees taller than 1.2 metres should be cut and pots and decorations must be removed. The trees can also be taken to the area’s recycling rentres. Councillor Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), Bath & North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “We throw away more rubbish at Christmas than at any other time of the year, but there are lots of things that can be recycled. “Wrapping paper (white backed, non-foil), greetings

cards, gift tags and cardboard packaging can all be placed in recycling containers. “You can also recycle other festive items like sweet and biscuit tins, aerosols, glass jars, plastic bottles and food containers like cream pots, foil from mince pies, quiches and takeaways. “Textiles and electrical items will also be collected so you can recycle worn-out Christmas jumpers and broken fairy lights and toys. Please put these in separate carrier bags next to your recycling box.” And for ideas on how to reduce food waste – including the estimated 74 million mince pies that are thrown away each year – visit the Love Food Hate Waste website at www. lovefoodhatewaste.com

Goldies take new anthem to Parliament! Members of an older people’s singing group from Keynsham have performed in the Houses of Parliament to launch a new charity song. The Golden-Oldies charity – or Goldies – unveiled its new anthem in London on November

30, where they were welcomed by local MPs, including Bath’s Ben Howlett. The song, We Are the Golden-Oldies, was written by Bristol-based support worker Paul Bryant, who discovered Goldies five years ago when he

Jessica Williams Your local legal Divorce and Family specialist in Keynsham 0117 986 3504 16 High Street

began taking adults with severe disabilities to singalong sessions hosted by the charity. Paul said: “I had been thinking for a long time that it would be great to try and come up with a new song that could be sung at all the Goldies sessions and perhaps become a regular Goldies singalong tune. “The words for the chorus started to buzz in my head and all of a sudden the melody and the rhythm came to me. “Goldies is a wonderful charity, one of the ladies that I care for has been attending the sessions for a number of years and I have noticed a transformation in her personality and her confidence through attending Goldies. It really is the Sing and Smile charity.” Goldies founder Grenville Jones said: “When Paul first played the song to me I knew it was a winner.

“It is easy to sing with a catchy chorus and we hope that all Goldies sessions in the future will start with it. “Our charity works with the University of Bath and their Department for Health and specifically with Dr Afroditi Stathi, a trustee of our charity. “A number of the popular songs that are sung at Goldies sessions have specifically designed movements and, working with Dr Stathi’s team, the new Goldies song will also have its own moves.” The Keynsham Goldies singers were joined by others from Bath, Swindon, South Gloucestershire, South Wales and the Midlands for the performance in London. A video of Paul performing the song at the charity’s Keynsham shop can be seen on Youtube – search “We are the Golden Oldies”.

NEWS FROM THE SPACE

Ideas pour in for 20th music festival

with Keynsham Arts Consortium Keynsham Music Festival gains charitable status!

Keynsham Music Festival Association Ltd is now a registered charitable company. After a process lasting just over a year the music festival has gained an important lifeline in respect of funding and the event’s sustainability. With constant talk of local authority funding cuts for the last two years, the festival directors have taken this step in order to help supplement possible grant cuts from other funding sources that are only available to registered charitable organisations.

Christmas at The Space

This year’s Christmas special sees three performances of the winter folk tale Hansel and Gretel on Saturday, December 17, at 10am, noon and 2pm. Living close by a forest, Hansel and Gretel are typical children. Often hungry, always wanting to play, colouring in their simple lives with vivid imaginations. The forest is their

two snowy comedies, Force Majeure (on December 1), the tale of a Swedish family on a winter holiday in the Alps, and Eddie the Eagle, the story of the would-be British Olympic ski jumper (on January 5). Find out more at http:// keynshamfilmworks.co.uk

Looking ahead playground and their friend. But when they wake up alone in the forest at midnight, things feel very different... The tale is reimagined using music and puppetry for family viewing by Brave Bold Drama and the BS13 Theatre Company and is sure to be as popular as last year’s Peter Pan. A date to look forward to is February 4, which sees a full concert at The Space in aid of the Chair of B&NES’ Annual Charity Appeal, which this year is raising funds for Butterflies-Haven, Wizzybugs and older people’s charity RICE. In association with Jelli Records, the acts include The Phoenix River Band, the all-girl The Honeyfire and Bristol singer-songwriter Rebecca Shelley. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets – priced at £10 plus booking fee, or £13 on the door if available – are already on sale at https:// keynshamtickets.cloudvenue. co.uk/

A dog show, a food festival and even a water slide in the Memorial Park were among suggestions made at a public meeting on next year’s Keynsham Music Festival, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017. Keynsham Music Festival Association held the event on November 14 to invite people to share their ideas for new features. The 40th anniversary of the town’s twinning link with Libourne in France in 2017 provided plenty of inspiration, with suggestions including French films and a themed dance night. Offering food for thought was the proposal that the event could host a food festival, or even a chocolate festival to celebrate the town’s heritage, while a water slide on Bristol’s Park Street was the inspiration behind a request for a slide on a slope in the park. Sixty members of Keyford Dancing School took part in Tapathon 2016 to raise money for Children in Need and to help break a record

Dancers hope to tap way into record books Dancers in Keynsham have taken part once again in an annual bid to break the world record for the biggest tap dance. Tapathon 2016 returned on November 20 to raise funds for Children in Need by getting thousands of people across the country to perform a choreographed routine simultaneously. Pudsey ears at the ready, members of Keyford Dancing

School were keen to play their part. With 60 dancers meeting at the River Suite to join in, the school improved on its own 2015 performance when 40 dancers took part. As the music – Sax by Fleur East – began at 1.30pm, they were among thousands of dancers at clubs and schools across the country hoping to beat the record, which currently stands at 7,596.

Last year’s total was close, with 7,363 dancers taking part, and now organisers at The Performers Project are tallying up the numbers from the groups taking part, hoping 2016 will be their year. Money is raised for Children in Need through the sale of Tapathon T-shirts, which are worn on the day, and through any fundraising events the clubs hold.

It was a busy day for Keyford Dancing School, as straight after the record attempt, many of the members then performed for medal assessments. Just days later, the group were in the spotlight again, filming for a documentary on keeping fit in the Bristol area. Find out more about Keyford Dancing School at www.keyforddancingschool. co.uk.

Donated shoebox gifts to change lives this Christmas, say grateful volunteers Volunteers at a Keynsham church have been astonished by the response to their annual “shoebox” appeal for gifts to deliver to children in Romania. While the group at Keynsham Elim Church had hoped to beat last year’s 388 shoeboxes, they were delighted to receive more than 750. Each wrapped box is filled with Christmas gifts for youngsters living in poverty in Oradea in north-west Romania. The boxes are currently being transported the 1,300 miles across Europe by lorry to the charity CASA Grace, before a team from Keynsham Elim arrives on December 8 to help hand-deliver the gifts. A spokesperson for the church said: “The delivery date of the shoeboxes roughly coincides with the traditional Christmas

“The church would like to personally thank every single individual that has taken the time, effort and money to produce a shoebox which will change a life this Christmas.” As well as the Christmas appeal, members of Keynsham Elim have been working with the community in Oradea for more than five years, helping CASA Grace to run a summer camp for children, install water supplies and give food aid to those in need. More than 750 shoeboxes have been donated to the Elim appeal gift-giving day in Romania on December 6 – St Nicolas Day. On this day in Romania, families would traditionally give and receive gifts, similar to December 25 Christmas celebrations held here in the UK.

“However, the families who CASA Grace support would never partake in the giving of gifts on this day as they can't afford it. But this is where your shoeboxes and your love and kindness makes the difference.

“I would just like to say a big heartfelt thank you for looking after our dad (pops) so well. Accepting the fact at a young age that carers were required is not easy. What we never could have guessed at that time was that we would have met such genuine, kind, professionals and fun people who would add so much to a quality of life which was otherwise slowly declining. You were all very much part of the family and Pops really enjoyed the time he spent with each and everyone of you. He seemed more comfortable with any of your carers than he did with a lot of other people and I think it was because he was able to relax and be himself. You were also an incredible support for the rest of the family, allowing life to go on as best as possible for the rest of us. As things got tougher towards the end you were a huge support for Mum too, assisting her with appointments and visiting Pops in hospital made a huge difference at a time when we really needed the help. You have all become friends to us, and thank you awfully for putting up with his awful jokes.“ The Harris Family.

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

A

von Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group’s November meeting “Our Seas, Our Future!” attracted a good audience at Wellsway School, hosted by the school’s Green Team, writes our correspondent. Avon Wildlife Trust’s chief executive, Ian Barrett who lives in Keynsham, kicked off the evening outlining the trust’s “Vision for Nature” in the coming years. The main event was guest speaker Alisdair Naulls, engagement officer for the Marine Conservation Society and a passionate spokesman for raising awareness of the state of the UK seas as well as the wider global status of our oceans and the wildlife they support. Alisdair gave us many facts and figures about our UK waters and marine wildlife, from seaweed to basking sharks, and how we can all help this fragile environment, by reducing our use of plastic and looking at how we dispose of it. He highlighted how larger companies need to support a green agenda and come on board with sustainable strategies if we are to make real advancements in conservation. However, successes through the input of the Marine Conservation Society are happening – note the charge for plastic bags! During the evening we were also supported by Keynsham Wombles, who play their part locally by promoting litter collection, and Mara Garcia, from Bristol organisation City to Sea, who collected signatures for an online petition against the sale of plastic cotton buds, the sticks from which inevitably end up in our seas.

Two and a half hours later, we re-assembled at the Old Bank pub to check and hear explanations of the answers. There were varying degrees of success and, with 33 points available, two teams managed to achieve the excellent score of 29 points. The teams – consisting of Vanessa and Derek Butler, helped by Janet and Phil Croft, and the other team of Lynne Hadley, Alan Lassman, Jeanette Schofield and Wendy Duckett – shared the prizes. Everyone agreed that, despite the cold it was great fun. It was good to see so many new people taking part, including a couple from the younger generation. Our

Street, where Andy is director, and he said the aim is to encourage readers to recognise their own strengths and focus on small changes they can make to create a huge difference in their mood, while avoiding the jargon of many other publications. Explaining the title, Andy, who spent more than 30 years with Avon and Somerset police and qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist in 2008 before leaving the force, said: “The caveman is our natural response to fear and the polar bear represents anything that induces that response, be it a scary situation, an argument or even that last task delegated to you.” Using facts, case studies, real life experiences and humour – as well as his own illustrations – Andy said: “My message is easy to read, easy to apply and makes life easier!”

n NEWS West heritage project goes on the road A project that has opened a new window on the past by publishing old maps of Bath and North East Somerset and beyond online is now going on the road. The Know Your Place team have launched KYPexplore, a digital exhibition that will tour the West of England to bring to life the people who used to live here from miners in Radstock to peat-cutters on the Somerset Levels using graphic panels, touchscreens and a WebApp to share material from museums, archives and heritage collections. The exhibition will visit a number of museums, libraries and community spaces between now and April, including Bath Central Library in December, Bradley Stoke Library in January and February and Radstock Museum in March and April. For those who can’t visit the exhibition, it can be accessed online at www.KYPexplore.com Felicia Davies, project officer for Know Your Place - West of England, said: “We hope the

rich and varied stories in the exhibition will help visitors make the connection with their own local heritage and inspire them to explore this further on the Know Your Place digital mapping resource.” To explore the maps online, visit www.kypwest.org.uk/ explore-the-map

Speaking out for dementia sufferers A group of volunteers hope to earn Dementia Friendly Town status for Keynsham and to give a voice to sufferers and their carers. The team of six, led by chairman Alan Hale, will be working with businesses, transport providers and schools in Keynsham and Saltford to raise awareness of the needs of those living with dementia. The group’s first goals include setting up a regular singing group and a memory café, which offer sufferers and carers the chance to socialise, activities and support. Mr Hale said: “All six of us have personal reasons through family and friends to want to achieve something to help those with dementia, which is such a cruel disease. “We would like to hear from

those who have been diagnosed with dementia to understand what might benefit them in having as much enjoyment out of life as possible and to hear from carers for the same reason.” The group is also welcoming people who would like to volunteer with the project to get in touch. Local employers and shops will be offered free short talks on the needs of dementia sufferers from a trained Dementia Champion. The Dementia Friendly Keynsham group, which is registered as a member of the Dementia Action Alliance with the Alzheimer’s Society, can be contacted on 0117 983 7923 or 07776 493221 or at dementiafriendlykeynsham@ gmail.com

GARDENING TIPS In the garden In October we were overwhelmed with apples. In November we were overwhelmed with rain. My rain gauge showed 183mm of rainfall, mostly in one week between November 16 and 23. There were puddles everywhere on the lawns, and water butts overflowing continuously. With the amount of water passing through the soil I think that most of the nutrients will have been washed out or at best depleted. I have been regularly feeding plants such as hellebores, daphnes, camellias, and other late winter flowering plants, but I shall add a little extra feed to them, and those that come in February and later will also get a splash to replace that which has been lost. I am pleased that the leaves fall on windy days and are now mostly down on the ground or in the compost bin. The trees do look bare, but on a clear winter's day as the sun sets, we have had some lovely displays of pink and pale blue skies, and the bare branches are quite striking silhouetted against that background. I am also continuing with the pruning of the espalier apple tree. It seems to be a long job, possibly

because I have to fiddle with short spurs, not long, whippy branches. However, they are looking tidy and with the benefit of some mild and dry weather they will be finished soon. It is time to inspect the hellebores to see if any new shoots are appearing. Our plants have no sign of any new growth, but if new shoots are there, now is the time to cut back all the leaves

We have growing up a plum tree a Clematis cirrhosis “Freckles” which seems never to catch anyone's eye, probably because it flowers in February, and is just now developing its buds. It is quite small and the flowers are a pale pink with a pattern, and hang so they are a bit modest. But it does look fragile, and I am continually surprised to see it once again providing some interest and colour in the garden.

It is the time of year to give some thought to the birds in the garden. I am a bit casual in the summer regarding feeding stations, but now I am in full flood to keep the feeders with plenty of food. I put out a fat ball and had an almost instant response from a group of coal tits, which swooped in and gave the fat ball a good going over. A damaged bramley apple attracted a blackbird but the apple has disappeared so I fear a magpie or jackdaw has visited. I keep several feeders around the garden and find that the birds do the rounds, choosing between the various foods. There is not a lot to do in the garden in the way of new plants or re-siting them, but maintenance of the plants, trees, bushes and hedges is vital. If you have climber roses, tie them in to their support and cut back the side shoots so that they do not get too heavy. Clean out at the base of hedges to give room for any new shoots, and possibly just tidy any loose bits. Clean any pots and put them into storage, and all those which will not be needed. Remember, the mower sat in the shed would like its blades and cutter plate greased. Turn it over and clean out any rubbish.

seed because it’s cheaper and it gives me greater satisfaction but if you only need a small number then buying established plants might be better. Most seeds will keep for

more than one season provided they are stored somewhere dry and frost-free. Now, turning to activity on the plot. Continue to dig when the soil conditions are right, i.e. not too wet or frozen, adding well rotted manure or compost as you go. There are two schools of thought on this. In the past the advice was to dig the manure into the soil but some say spreading it on the surface after digging is just as good. I am trying both approaches so I’ll see what happens. Whichever way you choose it is always beneficial to the soil to regularly add well rotted manure. I suggest covering rows of broad beans with a fleece tunnel or something similar to protect the young shoots from the worst of winter. Plant garlic before the middle of this month before it’s too late. Finally, cut back the asparagus to ground level as it turns yellow and dispose of it. Leaving it in place only encourages the larvae of the asparagus beetle to overwinter which will cause problems next season. Now being the dormant period, it is also a good time to plant raspberries.

On the plot People think that winter is not the time to be gardening but I believe it’s a year round activity. Admittedly there is less to do on the plot at this time of year but now is the time to start planning for next year. Firstly map out what you plan to grow taking into account the space available, what you eat or share with others and importantly the need to rotate your crops to minimise the risk of disease as well as to maintain the balance of soil nutrients. The general rule is to rotate on a three-year cycle and, if you have the luxury of space, to set aside an area to “rest” the soil by not growing anything for a season. Year 1 is root crops (e.g. parsnip, carrots, potatoes and beetroot). Follow this in year 2 with brassica crops (e.g. cabbage, sprouts and cauliflower). Then in year 3 with others (e.g. beans, peas, onions, lettuce and marrows). I suggest you note this somewhere as by next spring you will probably forget! The next thing to do is to look at your stock of seeds and reflect on what grew well and where you

had too much or too little to eat or store. Decide which grew best from your own sowings as opposed to plants bought at a garden centre. I always try to grow from

n NEWS Orchestra show will be out of this world!

Keynsham Orchestra’s concert this month promises to transport its audience to another world as the musicians tackle Holst’s The Planets. St John’s Church in the High Street will be the venue for the performance on Saturday, December 10, at 7.30pm, which will also include Berlioz’s Hungarian March Op24 and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat K364 for violin and viola. A spokesperson for the orchestra said: “This will be a very exciting concert. The Planets by Holst is a wonderful set of pieces – Mars and Jupiter are very well

known, but the other five pieces are also well worth hearing. And for the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, which is a beautiful piece of music, we will have two solo-

ists who are both still at school and are superb musicians.” Led by Andrew Rees, the conductor will be Mark Gateshill with soloists Seren Nickson on

violin and Erin Cacace on viola. Tickets are £10/£8 concessions and are available from the office at St John’s Church or on the door.

New football charity ready for kick-off A group of volunteers passionate about grassroots football have kicked off a new charity aimed at opening up the beautiful game to more youngsters in the Keynsham area. The initiative aims to remove any barriers children might face when getting involved in the sport – including gender, ethnicity, disability or cost – and fittingly it’s called #Football4Everyone. The charity is led by Ben Geracitano, Jack Cox and Frys Junior Football Club Under-10s coach Jon Connors and aims to offer the chance to play and train with qualified coaches to any child who wants to take up the opportunity, regardless of ability or skill level. Jon, who has coached at senior and junior level, said: “One thing is very common within

both levels of the game: if a coach feels you’re not good enough, you will be shown the door or passed on to another club to carry on playing. “Football4Everyone is a grassroots passion of mine, any child who wishes to play football should be given the opportunity to do so, no hesitation or worry about the ability level they currently sit at.” Children from 18 months up to seven can join training at Sensational Football Schools, which meets on Sunday mornings at Broadlands Academy, with the charity offering funding for families who can’t afford to pay fees, while at the same time a new junior football club for youngsters aged from seven to 16 – Red Falcons – will be launched at Somerdale Pavilion. Ben, who runs Sensational

Football Schools, said: “This will help bring them into football and create an energetic environment for them to learn fundamental football skills, along with life skills – most importantly social skills. They will learn team work, co-operation, communication and again, most importantly, friendship.” Funding will of course be essential to setting up a club and providing training, equipment, a pitch and matches and the founders are hoping to be awarded £5,000 from the Aviva Community Fund. They have reached the final alongside 16 other community sports initiatives from across the country after receiving nearly 2,600 public votes in the award scheme. Now it’s up to a judging panel to decide the winner, which will be announced on January 10. They are also seeking corpo-

rate sponsorship to support the activities. The charity will be recruiting youngsters from January ready for the start of the season in September 2017. Ben added that #Football4Everyone would play an active role in the local community, and that they had already launched their first project, asking Frys Junior teams to each give up two toys to donate to Children’s Hospice South West for Christmas. “We may be a new charity, but we really will be active within the local and surrounding area of Keynsham to help others in need, not only children,” he said. “This seemed like an ideal place to start, children helping children at Christmas.” To find out more about #Football4Everyone, email info. football4everyone@gmail.com

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

with Andrew Judge, team vicar at St Francis Church

Now we all live in the fast lane

I

was recently reading a review of a book called The Great Acceleration by Robert Covile, which asserts that everything we do, at work or play, is speeding up. This is a fact, the issue is whether this a good or a bad thing and what can we do about it. One unavoidable consequence of our increasingly busy lives is that they can become superficial, as we skim from one thing to another without time for pondering or reflection. The constant bombardment of noise and information in its various forms does not help either. This in turn

has further consequences on both a community and personal level. We thus find it difficult to think about the big issues – eg sustaining and nurturing community life amid budget cuts, care of the environment and the challenge of increasing immigration and cultural diversity. Politicians and the rest of us find ourselves increasingly forced into quick, ‘knee jerk’ responses or even denial about these issues, simply because we don’t have the time to think them through into the medium and longer term implications. It is all about the short term and looking for the quick fix. Sadly, on the personal level it is not much better, but the

My inner life is my private life, my hopes and secrets and aspirations – our inner landscapes. This requires regular attention because it actually motivates and drives us

consequences if anything are more serious. Each of us has both an outer and inner life. The outer life is our public life; my work, my accomplishments, my reputation – how I am seen by others. We spend most of our waking lives here. My inner life is my private life, my hopes and secrets and aspirations – our inner landscapes. This requires regular attention because it actually motivates and drives us. It needs to be reflected on and reviewed and corrected in the light of present circumstances but we generally don’t have the time or inclination to do this properly. It becomes like an untended and neglected garden. This affects people in

the churches and other faith communities just as much as anyone else because we are all subject to the same cultural pressures. Potentially, however, the faith communities have more resources that can be helpful here, but they are not always made use of, because for this discipline and sustained practice is required, both of which go against our prevailing culture. If the approaching holiday period after Christmas offers some increased space and leisure, I hope that many of us will find time for some “inner gardening” as well as perhaps some of the outdoor variety and the result will hopefully be a better Keynsham for everyone.

Movement group meets BalletBoyz

Mums tackling post-natal depression at a movement and wellbeing course were delighted to receive a visit from two professional dancers. Ed Pearce and Josh Wild from dance company the BalletBoyz took time out from performing at Bath’s Theatre Royal to visit a session run by Keynsham-based charity Make a Move, joining the group’s warm-up and yoga exercises. Michelle Rochester, dance practitioner and founder of Make a Move, said: “We exchanged stories of how we have seen dance and movement have a lifechanging effect on people. “The ‘Boyz’ said they had seen this when they visited Ethiopia. And closer to home we told them how one of our mums felt terribly low, considering suicide, when she remembered some of the things she had learnt on our course. “She did some breathing exercises and listened to some music, and then she was able

to unlock the door and face the world again. “The Boyz were great with the mums who attend our course and we want to thank them so much for joining us.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Non-Fiction

The Hairy Bikers’ 12 Days of Christmas by Dave Myers and Si King Join Si and Dave on a gastronomic guide to the 12 days of Christmas with excellent fool-proof versions of Christmas classics in this scrummy cookbook! With colourful illustrations and clear guidelines, Si and Dave also take on dishes with a new and inventive twist – such as goose risotto and chocolate and chestnut roulade. They cover what to cook on the big day itself but also include Christmas Eve, delicious cocktails, fancy nibbles as well as ideas for the leftovers. They even show you how to make your own Christmas crackers - and help keep the kids distracted. This is the perfect companion to your festive celebrations. Punks on Scooters: The Bristol Mod Revival 1979-1985 by Michael Salter This is a local book written by a local author that reminisces about a scene that is fairly familiar for those of us in our late 40s and early 50s. From the music of Madness and Secret Affair to the look with Parkas and Fred

Perry shirts, Michael Salter, born in Winterbourne, outlines his love of all things Mod and scooters. A well-written and very honest portrayal of his youth and early 20s set against the Mod Revival of early 1980s. There are some great pictures of local Mod groups inside and descriptions of the clubs of Bristol, including Steamers and the Locarno. This is a great read, describing a popular music and social scene against the backdrop of the local area. A must read for those looking at social/local history but also for all those “old Mods” out there!

Adult Fiction

The Jacobite Murders by G M Best Here is another book by a local author and recommended to me by one of our regular customers. This historical murder mystery is set in Bath and has many descriptions of the local landmarks, which give it an additional treat. Lady Overbury takes up residence in Queen Square to enjoy the season in Bath in 1745. She arrives in the opulent house of Sir Robert Benson which she can use for the duration of her stay. She then proceeds to throw herself into the city’s social scene. However, she unwittingly becomes involved in a series of brutal murders. With the help of some famous people she sets about helping to solve the crimes. Along the way she is caught up in a young couple’s love affair and a serious Jacobite plot

to overthrow the King in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie, which is linked to the murders. This is a pacey, fun book but also very interesting in highlighting Bath’s role in the Jacobite movement and what the city was like in its 18th-century heyday.

Young Adult Fiction

After the Snow by S D Crockett Willo lives in the “barren landscape of a new ice age”. One day he returns form a day’s hare-trapping to find that his family have inexplicably vanished. When he realises that they are not coming back, he has no choice but to load up his sledge and embark on a journey of survival and eventual self-discovery. This is a thrilling story for young adults, set in an unusual, harsh landscape.

Children’s Fiction It’s Christmas!

Dick & Dom’s Christmas Jokes: Nuts and Stuffing Who hides in the bakery at Christmas? A Mince spy. Why did Father Christmas get a parking ticket? He left his sleigh in a “snow parking” zone. And so the jokes keep going. Join Dick & Dom in their crazy book packed with over 300

totally silly Christmas jokes and activities, from word searches to drawing an evil Christmas pudding. A fun, slightly different look at Christmas! Sarah and Duck and the Christmas Lights by Sarah Gomes Harris A book for preschoolers – Sarah and her friend Duck are decorating their house, all ready for Christmas. However, they are missing the very important Christmas lights – oh no! Luckily Bug knows a special place where they can find some. Join them in their fun and quacky adventure.

believes and reacts to everything you think! If you repeatedly entertain thoughts of Christmas being a nightmare and that you dread it, then that is exactly what you will feel. If on the other hand you set your determination on enjoying the season and not letting anything get you down, you will sail through and things will go better as a result of your relaxed attitude. Spare a thought for those who may be alone, and take a few moments out of your day to ensure that they are OK, even if it's just a phone call. Small gestures mean a huge amount. Most importantly, get the whole thing into proportion. Loved ones will always prefer you to be in a good mood and joining in with the fun. The gifts and meals mean little if the atmosphere is brought down by everyone being stressed. Christmas comes every year. If it goes wrong – relax – you can have another go next year! Merry Christmas – see you in 2017.

INTERIORS

Have fun with festive ‘festoonery’

T

with interior designer Zoe Hewitt

December, 2016

aking the box of old Christmas decorations out of the loft was a staple Yule tradition in my household as a child. Charming little wooden people on toboggans and other winter loving characters adorned the tree and would be joined by one or two new danglies every year. There is something sweet about adding gradually to the family collection over time. But for those celebrating at home for the first time that might not be an option, while others may eschew a tree, and buying a bumper box of mass-produced baubles doesn’t appeal to everybody. One solution is to make your own festive festoonery from the simplest of materials, paper, or even scrap. Lower impact Christmas decorations can only be a good thing! These fan stars are not perfectly environmentally friendly having been spray painted gold, but they are at least made from waste pleated blinds. After

rescuing this ready-pleated fabric from the scrap-store with the bold intention of transforming it into an Issey Miyake-style dress, eventually I conceded defeat. No longer

languishing at the bottom of the craft stash, these ‘stars’ are now free to deck the halls and are very easy to recreate from paper in the colour, traditional or otherwise, of your choice at home. Simply fold the paper like a concertina, then staple or glue the edges together to make it fan out into a circle, then stitch through the centre to hold everything in place and string it up. As for the garlands, if you have a sewing machine it’s very quick to stitch two colours of crepe or tissue paper strips together, as long as you like, then simply snip along the edges to create the fringing. This is fairly child friendly so a great way to bring the family together and share the load. Twist the garland to see both sides of colour and swag it over the mantelpiece, wrap it around the banister or adorn the walls, anywhere you like, for some cheap and cheerful hall decking. Merry Christmas!

SPORT

Local triathletes shine in the Florida sun Keynsham Swimming Club members enjoyed more international success last month as sisters Ellie and Georgia Gussey flew to Sarasota, Florida for the World Triathle Championships from October 21 to 23, writes our correspondent. Derived from modern pentathlon, triathle is a competition similar to triathlon, in which athletes compete in three different events: shooting, swimming and running. More than 500 athletes representing 25 different countries took part in the event spread over a range of age groups. South Africa, Egypt and Argentina had sent very strong teams to the championships and standards were very high across the age group competitions. Conditions were very hot and the lake in which the swimming element took place was rumoured to be occupied by alligators! Georgia finished a brilliant

Georgia and Ellie Gussey brought home silver triathle medals seventh in the under-13s age group making up places with her strong swims and Ellie shot really well to help her finish 10th in the under-17s. The top three finishers from each country had their results combined to form a team. As a result, both Ellie and Georgia

won silver medals as part of the GB age group teams which was a great achievement and the icing on the cake of a fabulous experience for the girls. Georgia has been swimming at Keynsham Swimming Club since joining the Pre-Lim squad aged eight and Ellie started in the

Juniors aged 10. The sisters are also members of Bath Pentathlon Club which their father, Andy, helped to form in May 2015. The Pentathlon Club meets at Monkton Prep School on Friday evenings between 6pm and 9pm. Presentation night for the year’s victors Frys Bowling Club ended the 2016 season with their annual presentation night, writes our correspondent. The year’s competitions started with the Triples Day, which was won by the rink of Jonathan Day, Terry Vickery and Mary Buck while the runners-up trophies went to Nick Grenfell, with Eric Jones and Simon Wilkins both picking up their first trophies with the club. Eric and Nick then teamed up in the pairs competition, claiming victory in the final against Vernon Hopkins and Pete Rumble. Pete also made the final of the Novices to face Dean Thomas, who took his first title at Frys. The other singles contests saw Jonathan Day reaching all three finals. The two wood final was a rematch of last year’s, with

Geoff Kershaw looking to gain the title but it eventually went to Jonathan for the second year. The Handicap saw Brian Hill playing defending champion Jonathan, who held onto his title. With three titles to his name, Jonathan then beat reigning champion Geoff Kershaw in the Championship, an historic win that saw him become the first bowler in the club’s 99year history to take home four trophies in a single season. 2017 is a very special year for Frys Bowling Club as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. More details about the celebrations will be released next year. If you are interested in joining Frys Bowling Club or would like to give bowls a try, please contact secretary Christopher Day on 01225 872959 or email frysbowlsclub@gmail.com.

n SPORT KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field The Ks returned the top of the table in Toolstation Western League Division One in November

November saw Keynsham Town’s First Team return to the summit of the Toolstation Western League Division One with a 100% return from their four league games and a cup victory as well. A chilly Tuesday evening saw the Ks visit Westbury United and come away with a hardearned 1-0 victory. Keynsham had the better of the first half, with Kieran Adams impressing in midfield in his first appearance of the season. However it was centre-forward Pat Davison, recalled to the starting line-up after coming off the bench to score in the previous game, who sealed the points with a thunderous drive from the edge of the box in the 37th minute. They protected their lead comfortably in the second half, with keeper Ash Wintle having little to do. The following Saturday saw a visit to in-form Warminster Town, with manager Chris King giving new signing Jamie Price his debut in midfield. The first half hour was an even affair, but Pat Davison continued his hot streak with a neat finish from an excellent cross from Mike Winer. The game looked safe when Sam Duggan ran on to a through ball to lob the ball over the keeper in the 70th minute. However, the hosts hit back and reduced the deficit with a 20-yard freekick with 10 minutes to go. The Ks held on to their advantage though, with Ash Wintle again in fine form between the sticks. A break from league action saw Hengrove Athletic visit the AJN Stadium for a Somerset Premier Cup Second Round clash. Chris King took the opportunity to give some of the fringe players in the First Team squad some game time, and after a dull first half, excellent goals from Tauren Williams and Matthew Martin saw the Ks progress to the quarter-finals for

Ben Harris receives the Man of the Match award from the Ks Under-12 Colts the second year running. Chris said: “It was great to see two players getting their first ever goals for Keynsham’s First Team. Tauren and Maz were on the end of some stick before the game, so it was quite fitting that they got off the mark tonight. Tauren’s was a cracking left foot strike and Mazzie took his goal really well on his weaker foot too. I didn’t realise either of them had a left peg!” Next up on a typical wet and windy Saturday was a visit to Almondsbury UWE, and the Ks came away with their sixth 1-0 away win of the season. Again it was that man Davison who scored the all-important goal five minutes before half-time. The game was far from a classic, but it was a potential “top v bottom” banana skin avoided for Keynsham. They should have put the game out of reach in

the second half, but had to hold out for a narrow win, with Ash Wintle in imperious form in goal. The month ended with a thrilling 5-4 win against fellow promotion challengers Malmesbury Victoria at Crown Fields. Ash Wintle made his 100th appearance for the Ks, but some sloppy defending in the first half saw the visitors gifted two goals. However, this was the calm before the storm, as a crazy second half saw five goals in 18 minutes from the Ks! Before that incredible spell, Malmesbury extended their lead 10 minutes after the interval to 3-0. But then an amazing fightback was started with a calamitous error by the visiting keeper, who let a speculative 30-yard shot from Jordan Anstey straight through his legs. Before the crowd could pause for breath, Sam Duggan made it 2-3 from the penalty

At the end of the month, the league table was looking like this: First Division P W D L KEYNSHAM 22 16 1 5 Wellington 21 15 4 2 Hengrove 21 13 4 4 Cheddar 21 13 4 4

spot, Matt Brown equalised and super sub Pat Davison made it 4-3 to the Ks. Malmesbury then went down the other end almost immediately and made it 4-4, before Matt Brown sealed the comeback with his 18th goal of the season. The Ks have two home games this month. First up will be the visit of Roman Glass St George on Saturday, December 3 (3pm kick-off). Then local rivals Hengrove Athletic visit Crown Fields on Boxing Day for another crucial promotion battle (3pm kick-off). The club’s Reserves also had an excellent month, recording three successive victories to move up the Somerset County League Division One East table. And the good form was maintained by the A Team, who won their only two league games in November to move up to fourth place in the Bristol & Suburban League Division 3. Club Secretary Julian French said: “It is great to see all the hard work from our players, management and committee members throughout the Senior Section of our club starting to pay dividends.” Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).
