Crossing campaign renewed after two more accidents From Page 1 two people being knocked down as they crossed the road in two separate incidents last month. Seven years after she first asked for pedestrian-controlled lights, Ms Neal says she is still “terrified” that there will be a fatality if nothing is done to alter the crossing and is hoping to arrange talks with local councillors and the town’s chamber of commerce. She said: “Surely traffic lights have got to be the answer but while the council is trying to work it out more people are getting hurt.” Ms Neal’s campaign began when her own mother was hit by a lorry after she had already walked several steps into the road on the zebra crossing in 2010. Beverley is now her mother’s full-time carer after the incident left Mrs Neal with a permanently detached muscle in her shoulder. After she raised the issue in Keynshamvoice in 2014, the council installed anti-skid surfacing but said: “There is good forward visibility to the beacons at the side of the zebra crossing – we don’t think that a puffin crossing would improve forward visibility further or improve road safety at this location.” But as a member of staff at Parsons Bakery, Beverley’s

sister Lorna Hewlett said she still witnesses accidents and near-misses regularly, with paramedics and police called to both of the most recent incidents. She said: “I don’t know if drivers don’t see people on the crossing but something’s got to be done. I can’t deal with seeing the accidents anymore and hearing the ‘thud’ or the shouts – it’s an awful thing to happen to anyone but I’m so afraid it will be a child one day. “They put in pedestrian crossings with lights near Iceland at the end of the street – it’s time to have one here. This is where the congestion is and I would have thought they would put one right in the middle of the street. But they haven’t, and this is where the accidents are happening.” Both sisters say they are hoping that the proposed oneway trial on the High Street, scheduled to begin this spring, will improve safety along the street and that any work as part of the scheme might include a new crossing. Beverley said: “My fear is there will be a fatality. With two more accidents it couldn’t be plainer to me that something needs to be done.” An announcement on the trial of a one-way system for

Former councillor Gill will be dearly missed A former Keynsham councillor, who chaired the town council for a number of years until 2013, has passed away. Gill Hellier was actively involved in many aspects of community life, not only as part of the council but also as a volunteer with many local organisations, including the Friends of Manor Road Woodland and autism charity Butterflies-Haven, and assisted Keynsham’s Winter Festival

and Keynsham Music Festival. Gill was one of four sisters, and had lived in Keynsham since 1963 with husband Len, staying in the same house for all of their married life. Gill, who was 81, is survived by her husband, son Bob, daughter Sarah, three grandchildren, her three sisters, five nephews and a niece. Her family said they were heartbroken by her loss and will miss her dearly.

Trio of acts to support a trio of charities Lorna Hewlett, colleague Emma, Beverley Neal and her daughter Jasmine at the zebra crossing in 2014 traffic, which could last for 18 months, is expected soon, with public consultation to be held throughout the scheme. The council’s proposed budget for 2017/18 says the authority will seek grant funding towards a £2.5 million scheme to improve public space on the High Street

and make the one-way system permanent if it is successful. A report on the budget proposal, which is due to go to full council on February 14, says “there will be comprehensive public engagement on the merits of the trial and the design options for a permanent scheme”.

A concert that will benefit three local charities is being hosted in Keynsham by the chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Councillor Alan Hale. Three acts will be joining the line-up on Saturday, February 4, from 7.30pm at The Space in Market Walk, including The Phoenix River Band with their country-flavoured rock, supported by Bristol-based sisters Sally and Natalie Joiner who form The Honeyfire, and singer-songwriter Rebecca Shelley.

Proceeds from the show will be split between The Rice Institute at the RUH for its work on dementia, Wizzy Bugs, which provides powered wheelchairs to children, and autism charity Butterflies-Haven. Tickets for the Chairman’s Charity Appeal Concert cost £10 in advance on 0117 986 8683 or from https://keynshamtickets. cloudvenue.co.uk/thechairmans charityappealconcert Tickets on the door, which opens at 7pm, will be £13.

Council tax rises on way as authorities

N

EW

Households in Keynsham will see a rise in their council tax bills from April, the town council has confirmed, while Bath and North East Somerset councillors are due to vote on a 3.5 per cent increase in a few days’ time. Keynsham Town Council set its budget at its January meeting, deciding on a 5.95 per cent increase, which will add 9p per week to the bill for Band D equivalent homes, taking it to £1.64 a week. The payments from every household over the year will add up to £501,000, which will go towards the forecasted £661,090 it will cost to provide the services funded by the town council over the 12 months from April, such as the town’s youth service and upkeep of the cemetery. The rest of the expenditure will be covered by £63,348 of income and £93,552 from general reserves – the money it sets aside for unforeseen costs.

l Keynsham Town Council precept to rise, adding 9p a week to the council tax bill for Band D households l Bath and North East Somerset Council proposes a 1.5 per cent rise on top of a 2 per cent social care precept – a rise of £3.62 a month for Band D homes Dr Cheryl Scott, town clerk, said: “There are three main factors that the town council has had to consider for this coming year. Firstly, last year the town council enjoyed a council tax support grant from B&NES of £36,000 and, while the council is grateful that B&NES has decided on a phased reduction – rather than ceasing the full grant immediately as some other councils have done

CW Fitness

– it nevertheless represents a significant reduction of £18,100 in income for the coming year and will be phased out completely in 2020/2021. “Secondly, the town council has sometimes previously opted to fund a proportion of expenditure from general reserves in order to keep any council tax rise to a minimum. However, this now has to be balanced against the auditor’s

requirement for the town council to maintain a certain level of general reserves. “Thirdly, the town council has included an element of forward planning in this new budget to ensure that sufficient funds will be available over the coming years in order to support and maintain all the services that the growing numbers of Keynsham residents want and expect. “There have been significant

aim to balance the cuts and costs ahead costs associated with the cemetery and chapel this year which have had to be undertaken as a matter of urgency so the council has made provision to ensure sufficient funds are committed each year for a rolling programme of work without jeopardizing the general reserves in any one year.” Town council chairman Councillor Lisa O Brien added: “Residents involved with the Neighbourhood Development Plan process have proposed challenging but exciting aspirations for the future development of our town. As there is a general government thrust to drive more decisionmaking down to local level, we have the opportunity to ‘grasp the nettle’. “However, we must ensure that we have financial stability and manage our resources responsibly. We feel that this small increase will support the

goals we have for Keynsham.” Meanwhile, council tax bills are likely to get another increase when Bath and North East Somerset Council sets its budget on February 14, which is likely to include a 1.5 per cent increase for households. Added to the ringfenced two per cent social care precept, this equates to an increase of £3.62 a month for Band D properties. It comes as the council faces what it calls “the biggest financial squeeze in its history” as it attempts to make £49 million of savings by 2020. Councillor Charles Gerrish (Conservative, Keynsham North), the council’s Cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “We believe that the council tax rise we are proposing is likely to be among the lowest in the region – something which has only been achieved by undertaking a thorough root-and-branch review of the council’s finances.

“We remain committed to keeping the level of council tax as low as we can while still protecting front-line services as far as possible. The vast majority of the savings we need to make are being achieved through increased efficiency, service innovation and generating new income through investments.” The authority has also set out its proposed investments for 2017/18, including the £3.6 million upgrade of Keynsham Leisure Centre and securing grant funding of £2.5 million to cover improvements to Keynsham High Street and making the proposed oneway system permanent if the forthcoming trial is successful. There is also a proposal to put £70,000 towards a scheme to create a new cycle and pedestrian path over the River Avon as part of the Somerdale development, the first part of which will be a feasibility study. The budget

would also provide £500,000 to improve traffic flow at the A39 Two-Headed Man junction as well as funding for the expansion of Castle Primary School from 210 places to 420. B&NES Council Cabinet members were due to debate the budget on Wednesday, February 1, before the proposals go to full council for debate on Tuesday, February 14. Army confirms unit’s move to Keynsham An Army unit currently based in north Wales will be relocated to Keynsham, it has been confirmed. News that the 101 Battalion Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) would no longer be headquartered in Wrexham was first revealed by leader of the town’s council Mark Pritchard on January 25. An Army spokesperson later confirmed the news, saying the battalion would “effectively merge” with 105 Battalion. The Army is currently undergoing a reorganisation across the country called Army Refine 2020. A spokesperson said: “As announced last year, the Army

The REME provides repair and recovery for Army equipment is modernising its structures to increase its readiness to fight. “The changes will have minimal impact on Wales, but the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) are being reorganised nationally

to make better use of the unique technical skills the unit brings, and so 101 Battalion REME will now be headquartered out of Bristol.” 105 Battalion’s 158 Field Company is based at the Keynsham Army Reserve Centre in Ashmead Road, where there are training facilities for reserves who train as mechanics, metalsmiths, armourers, combat medical technicians and other trades alongside their civilian day jobs. Like other REME units its role is to carry out repairs, maintenance and modifications to all kinds of Army equipment or to “keep the punch in the

Army’s fist”, as it says on the 105 Battalion’s webpage. The 101 Battalion is made up of nearly 300 reservists and has been based at Hightown Barracks in Wrexham since 1999, where they were granted the Freedom of the Borough in a ceremony in 2013. It currently has soldiers serving on operations in Afghanistan and has previously provided specialist soldiers for Iraq, Cyprus, Canada and the Balkans. Mr Pritchard said he was “hugely saddened” following a briefing from 101 Battalion personnel and would be setting up an online petition to oppose the move from Wrexham.

VET’S ADVICE with Keynsham Veterinary Centre

Is my pet overweight? Although weighing your pet is a good place to start when determining if they are overweight, the guideline weights for certain breeds cannot always be relied upon – all individuals are different. The best thing to do is to look at your pet’s body shape and amount of body fat. To do this we generally perform a Body Condition Score, which is based on a points system of 1 to 9. A score of 1 to 3 is too thin; 4 to 5 is deemed an ideal weight; 6 to 7 is overweight; 8 to 9 is obese. Visit our website www.highcroftvet.co.uk to watch a video explaining the technique. The ideal body shape of a cat or dog should be well proportioned, where the ribs are not visible but can be easily felt. They have an obvious waist when looked down on from above, and an evident abdominal tuck when viewed from the side. Much like in humans, obesity in pets can lead to many debilitating health issues such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease, arthritis, high blood pressure and even forms of cancer. Apparently one sausage is the equivalent of two and a half hamburgers to a dog, whereas one cup of milk for a cat is the same as eating three hamburgers! So as tempting as it may be to

give your pet the occasional human treat, think about how unhealthy it could actually be to an animal. If you’re struggling to help your pet lose weight, sign them up to one of our FREE weight clinics with a veterinary nurse. The nurse will be able to tailor a diet and exercise plan to your pet and can schedule

No warm water pools in area’s revamped leisure centres, council tells campaigners Campaigners’ calls for warm water pools to be included in the refurbishment of Keynsham and Bath’s leisure centres have been turned down. Bath and North East Somerset Council said the request by the Warm Water Inclusive Swimming and Exercise (WWISE) group was not financially viable – and would result in Sport England withdrawing £1.5 million of funding as it would scupper club and competition swimming in Bath. WWISE says people with disabilities, injury and long-term illnesses need a new public access warm water pool in the B&NES area to help them improve their conditions and maintain fitness. The council said it had investigated the request for dedicated 1.2 to 1.3-metre

Keynsham Leisure Centre will be revamped as part of plans for the Riverside complex deep pools heated to at least 32 degrees and consulted with a number of organisations, including Sport England, none of whom supported the proposal. Councillor Martin Veal, Cabinet member for community services, said: “As part of the refurbishments at both sites we have carefully considered the requests of the WWISE group. However, they are not financially viable based on costs and anticipated usage numbers.

“We have consulted with a range of specialists, including the Amateur Swimming Association, Sport England, our leisure partners Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) along with independent advisors. “None of these organisations were supportive of the inclusion of warm water pools within the leisure refurbishments. It would have also resulted in the withdrawal of £1.5 million in funding from Sport England, as

club and competition swimming in Bath would no longer be possible.” Both leisure centres will provide new 90cm to one-metredeep teaching pools with water that is heated to 30-32C, it was also confirmed. Mr Veal said: “Bath & North East Council is committed to providing excellent leisure facilities in both the Bath and Keynsham leisure centres. “During these extremely challenging financial times we must deliver leisure facilities that support all people to live healthy lifestyles and are financially viable. The new teaching pools will provide facilities for young people to learn to swim in a safe and controlled environment. Currently, neither the Bath or Keynsham sites offer dedicated teaching pools.”

Call for community As any family historian would say, cemeteries are a rich link to a community’s past – and that is particularly true of Keynsham Cemetery. With its listed Victorian chapels above ground, Roman remains hidden beneath, and as a place of remembrance for many of today’s residents, it is a valued site. Its structures, however, have been showing signs of their age recently with a 17-metre stretch of wall crumbling into neighbouring school playing fields, subsidence on its driveway and erosion on some of the banks that surround it. As a result Keynsham Town Council, which owns and maintains the site, has announced it will be investing in a programme of works in the cemetery in coming months and years to secure it for future generations. The most pressing work will

be to the boundaries, to rebuild the lost dry stone wall – once permission has been secured from the diocese and Broadlands Academy – and permanently restore the barrier along Durley Hill, which will be put out to tender in the coming financial year. Town clerk Dr Cheryl Scott said: “First of all, what a wonderful place the cemetery is, how beautiful and full of wildlife it is with Grade II-listed buildings and some of the walls listed, too. The town council has maintained the cemetery over the years but there comes a time with old structures that perhaps you need to do more.” Restoration of the chapel is one aim, with around £50,000 already set aside for future work at the cemetery by the council, which will also be looking at other grants and funding available – but there is also the chance for the community to

to help conserve its historic cemetery

Keynsham Cemetery, on Durley Hill, has Grade II-listed buildings as well as ancient Roman remains below ground play a part in conservation at the site, too. Dr Scott added: “The town council wants to issue an

invitation to schools, colleges, wildlife organisations and community groups to work with the town council in putting

together a proposal to conserve the cemetery and chapel, to make it more accessible to the people of Keynsham with a focus on

educating them about its history and significance.” Archaeologists who carried out excavations at the cemetery in 2015, led by Bryn Walters, are keen to return to carry out work on the intriguing ruins that were first examined in the 1920s. Speaking at a Keynsham Town Council meeting in April last year, Mr Walters said he believed the remains could be “one of the most important buildings ever found in Britain” and envisaged archaeologists creating a visible outline of the building in the grass and new information panels for visitors. Whether it will happen isn’t clear, but the site already holds great significance for many local people – anyone who is interested in finding out more about getting involved with conservation at the cemetery can contact the town council on 0117 986 8683 or email townclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk

Could Keynsham become the UK’s first A tyre, a gas canister, plastic barrels and countless empty bottles, crisp packets and food wrappers formed a pile of rubbish that was hard to miss at the side of Broadmead Lane on a Sunday afternoon in January. Two hours earlier, more than 30 volunteers of all ages – families, individuals, members of the Lions Club, and church representatives – had met at the spot next to the town’s Waitrose store and set off in every direction armed with litter pickers and plastic sacks. Their hi-visibility jackets could be seen along Unity Road behind the supermarket, in Ashmead Road, under the railway bridge along Stidham Lane and on sections of the A4 Bath Road, as the group tackled everything from the remnants of meals on the go to fly-tipped TVs and fridges. The area, with little in the way of residential properties and

Chief Womble Erica Davies, right, with fellow Wombles and some of the bags of litter collected by volunteers on January 28 a large amount of traffic, was chosen by volunteer litter pickers the Keynsham Wombles for their first “Big Womble” of 2017 – and there was plenty for them to do. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s waste team to collect, chief Womble Erica Davies explained why the group had chosen the area. “It’s not a beauty spot that people appreciate,” she said.

“There’s no sense of ownership, but all litter eventually makes its way into rivers and seas and harms wildlife wherever it is.” Fellow Womble Jo Page added: “Wherever it is thrown down it harms the whole area

litter-free town? as it blows around and it gives a negative impression to people who drive down here – we want it to look as if it’s being cared for.” With individual Wombles keeping an eye on their own patches and regular mass cleanups scheduled throughout the year, the volunteers are making a difference – but now Erica is thinking bigger than even the biggest of Big Wombles and tackling the scourge of littering before it even happens. She wants to make Keynsham the UK’s first Litter Free Town, enlisting retailers, manufacturers, schools and more to change the whole community’s attitude to litter. With Keynsham as the pioneer, she hopes to create a model that could be replicated in towns and cities across the country and is bringing together people who could help put the plan into action. She said: “It’s about

getting the whole community to work together to change people’s attitudes so that people don’t just throw litter down, so it wouldn’t even enter our heads to do it. In places in other parts of the world, like Singapore, you just don’t drop litter. “We want to look at how we can change that behaviour – it’s a really big task but if we can crack it in Keynsham as a pilot, we could replicate it across other towns, with an awards scheme.” Representatives from Keep Britain Tidy and Cleanup UK will be visiting Keynsham to offer their support to developing the scheme and Erica is inviting schools, councillors, B&NES waste and recycling staff and many more to give their input. Key to the scheme – and also one of the biggest challenges – is getting representatives from retailers and manufacturers involved. “We want to talk to them

Litter pickers of all ages joined the first Big Womble of 2017, collecting more than 40 bags of litter about the possibility of educating people in stores or changing packaging so it’s biodegradable – this is an enormous challenge and will involve working with all sectors of our community to change ingrained behaviours.” To find out more and get involved with Keynsham Wombles or the Litter Free Town initiative, contact Erica on 07713 417974 or email womble@ transitionkeynsham.org.

On Saturday, March 4,the Wombles will also be taking part in The Great British Spring Clean from 2pm to 4pm at various points across Keynsham.

ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

H

ow time flies – Christmas seems like a distant memory as we are already bounding through 2017. We have already suffered with a few problems this year. It appears that we have had some travelling criminals who have been targeting sheds and outbuildings in the Keynsham, Saltford, Pensford and Marksbury areas. We often forget the value of the tools, bikes and other items that we have in these normally poorly secured outbuildings. I would ask you to look at your own security measures and make sure that they are suitable for the value of the property you are trying to secure. If you need help or advice then please make contact and I can supply information through

keynshamvoice the crime reduction team as they promote ‘sheducation’. And as always, if you see something suspicious then please call, we would rather come out and investigate a situation and find it to be nothing than miss an opportunity to apprehend offenders. This month I met with the Keynsham Rotary Club at one of their meetings held at Saltford Golf Club. I spoke to them about the changes in the modern police service and how this is affecting ground-level policing. I would like to thank Lynne Pike for the invitation and the Keynsham Rotary president Richard Eaton for his hospitality. If you are interested in the Rotary Club then look them up on the internet to see what they get involved in and how you could be part of it. I am a strong believer in community policing and it is only with the community’s support that this system works. With the financial constraints put on all of the emergency services of late, it gets more and more important. We

can’t be everywhere and so one of the areas in which we suffer is the information and intelligence gathering from around the local community. This is just the normal interaction between police officers, PCSOs and the public. Sometimes, if you don’t tell us about it then we don’t know. It’s really easy to pass information to us by visiting the neighbourhood pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website. So please, if you have something that you think is relevant then make contact with us. You never know – information that you think is small and insignificant could be the final piece of the puzzle that we need to deal with an incident, offender or gain a warrant. It seems like there are ever more complaints about drivers’ speed, behaviour or lack of consideration for other road users. This month problems have been highlighted on the B3116, known locally as the Wellsway. We have received complaints about the manner of driving at this location, which includes speeding, mobile

February, 2017

phone usage and vehicles ignoring the 7.5-ton weight limit. The complaints concern the Keynsham end that joins Bath Hill and Bath Road at the roundabout. Vehicles are travelling at speed at this location, ignoring the 20mph limit while travelling in both directions. It also appears that a number of drivers are using their mobile phones while struck in traffic. We will be looking to target this location and deal robustly with those caught. I am always baffled by drivers using their mobile phones – it’s cheaper to buy a hands-free device than pay a fine and have points on your licence, so I would urge people to do this. This location at its busiest is where hundreds of schoolchildren cross the road and drivers need to have their wits about them without these sorts of distractions. As always, if you need to speak to me or any of the team then please make contact through the Avon and Somerset website. PC James Evans

New path opens up all-weather route along river in town’s much-loved park A new Tarmac path has officially opened in Keynsham Memorial Park, completing a circular walk around the River Chew. The new route, which takes visitors from the Bath Hill East car park and along the river towards Dapps Hill, also provides better access to the outdoor gym equipment that was installed in 2015. Councillor Martin Veal, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet member for community services, visited the park to cut a ribbon last month to officially open the route. Mr Veal said: “The new path we have opened is a real asset to the community providing many benefits to local residents and park visitors, especially those with mobility scooters, parents with pushchairs and walkers in wet weather, for many years to come. “I hope that as well as walking, people will use the path and outdoor gym equipment for a range of activities including walking, running and working out. “We want people to get the most out of our parks and green spaces and having access to this path and equipment will ensure they can use their local park to have fun and stay healthy.” He was joined by Keynsham Town Council chairman Lisa O’Brien and Keynsham North councillors Brian Simmons and Charles Gerrish, who is also the

LETTERS Coud you welcome a Chernobyl child?

Can you help? Could you make a difference to the life of a Chernobyl child? Two weeks from you could give two years of added life to these children. We urgently need two host families to help us this summer. Do you remember the Chernobyl disaster back in April 1986? The population of Belarus can never forget. Their people will be forever affected by the legacy of the world’s worst nuclear disaster – the radioactive fallout was nearly 400 times greater than the bombs dropped in 1945 on Hiroshima & Nagasaki combined. The World Health Organisation has classified 500,000 of the children in Belarus as being “at risk” – or, put another way, only six per cent of the children are considered healthy. The Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity was established

by Victor Mizzi MBE in 1992. Building on his example, we are bringing a group of 16 children from the Osipovichi district of Belarus this summer for a month’s respite break. It is estimated that a month staying with families here, eating nourishing food, away from the relentless radiation and breathing clean air can add up to two years to their life expectancy. Could you share your home with two 11-year-old girls for two weeks? There is a comprehensive network of support for host families – you would not be on your own. The children will take part in lots of planned activities that we have organised on their behalf. These activities range from sports to the arts, from local visits to coach trips to the sea or countryside. There will be two interpreters with the group and they are on hand around the clock should there be any language difficulties or for general advice and assistance. If you think that you can help us to help these most unfortunate children please call Andy March on 07812 159942, visit our website at www.ccll. org.uk/bristol to find out more,

or visit the Gallery so that you can see all the fun and activities from previous summers. You can also find us on Facebook – go to ccllbristol. Alan Elkan Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline

Many reasons to support a bypass

I read with dismay that Saltford Parish Council does not support the plan to bypass the village of Saltford. I will point out my reasons for saying this: n There has been a significant increase in the amount of traffic consisting of cars in general, but in particular an increase of heavy goods vehicles on the A4. This problem can only increase in years to come. n It has been shown time after time that any traffic incidents on the A4 always cause chaos from the Broadmead roundabout and well beyond the Globe roundabout. n Another equally important problem concerns the health of the population who live in Saltford. The air quality in Saltford, especially along the A4, is very poor.

February, 2017 n After a pollution meter was installed near the Crown public house several years ago, the concentration of traffic pollution by nitrogen dioxide was shown to be above the Government’s maximum limit. Since then, the reading has increased every year and for obvious reasons this is bound to be detrimental for all people (especially young children and the elderly) who live in the area. It stands to sense that action needs to be taken ASAP to alleviate this problem. n There is no definite plan to build more housing in Saltford, but there are plans to build thousands of homes in Bath, Keynsham and East Bristol, which will substantially increase traffic on the A4 through Saltford, meaning of course that the pollution problem can only get worse due to extra traffic. n The parish council give the impression that they seem to be interested only in reopening the former Saltford railway station, with all the problems that the extra road traffic will bring. n The people of Saltford have waited for many years for a Saltford bypass. The parish council should now allow all

Traffic levels on the decrease in village

Traffic counts by B&NES Council for the A4 Bath Road Saltford show a “five-day” average of 27,747 vehicles a day (both directions combined) in 2015. This is a twelve per cent fall from the peak of 31,075 in 2002. The latest figures for 2016 await the inclusion of the December counts but they are expected to be as encouraging. There remains congestion at peak times but overall figures are DOWN. There is no room for complacency and these traffic statistics can be driven down further. However, there are simpler, more effective, greener, and cheaper ways to reduce congestion on the A4 at peak times than a new orbital road at Saltford. Duncan Hounsell Saltford

Feeding our wild birds the safe way

In our December 2016 issue, alongside our Gardening Tips column, we featured an image of a robin eating a fat ball inside a nylon mesh bag. A reader has been in touch asking us to highlight that the RSPB says food should never be put out for birds in these mesh bags as they can trap birds’ feet or even cause broken or torn feet and legs. Birds with barbed tongues, such as woodpeckers, can also become trapped by their beaks. Seeds can be put out in transparent tubular containers with holes in, while nuts should go in feeders with steel mesh

that is large enough to prevent beak damage but too small for large pieces of nut to be removed. The society suggests around 6mm.

See www.rspb.org.uk/birdsand-wildlife/read-and-learn/ helping-birds/feeding/how.aspx for more tips on how to feed the birds in your garden.

Wellsway School is GCSE star performer Wellsway School is the South West’s top performer for English and maths at GCSE, government figures have confirmed. Principal Matthew Woodville paid tribute to the effort put in by staff, students and families to achieve the results in 2016, which saw 91 per cent achieve at least a grade C in both of the core subjects – way above the national average of 59.3 per cent. The school also exceeded the national average in the English Baccalaureate tables and in the new Attainment 8 and Progress 8 measures, which assess students’ progress across eight subjects between the ages of 11 and 16. The figures, with national average in brackets, are E Bacc 47 per cent (23.1), Attainment 8 57.9 pts (48.5) and Progress 8 0.3 (0). A P8 score above zero means pupils made more progress than

those across England who got similar test results at the end of primary school. Principal Matthew Woodville said: “These amazing results – even higher than the provisional figures – are thanks to the tireless work of our staff, the commitment of the students and the support they receive from their families. Our results have gone up every year for five years and we continue to provide the best education we can for the young people in our care. “The performance measures have changed and are continuing to change but our unremitting focus on high quality teaching and learning, coupled with providing a range of opportunities and experiences to enable our students to develop as well-rounded individuals, remains.”

Cyclists help pupils be safe and be seen Safety on the roads is of paramount importance to cyclists, and now a group of local riders is helping youngsters get out and about safely too. Members of Saltford and Keynsham Cycle Club (SAS CC), who cycle around the Chew Valley every weekend, have presented pupils at Bishop Sutton and Stanton Drew Primary Schools with hi-visibility vests to use when leaving the school grounds for walks to the lake or to the local tennis club, for example. Keen to work with communities along their regular route, the club contacted local schools and councils to invite them to approach the group for support with events or projects that might be cycling, safety or sportrelated. Head teacher Dieter Cook

got in touch and last month SAS members Rob Stephen and Annamarie Miles presented the pupils with a set of hi-vis vests that feature both the club’s and schools’ logos. A club spokesperson said: “Mr Cook explained to the children that their safety was a priority. Many of the children realised they would benefit immediately as they were soon off for ‘off site’ activities. “The SAS club members unanimously agreed this was an important and worthwhile use of club funds and were delighted that the club was able to be involved in this opportunity.” Salt and Sham Cycling Club meets every Saturday morning, at 7am in Ashton Way car park for their Lap of the Lake ride. Sowing the seeds for new wildlife havens

Members of St Keyna Primary School’s Green Team have been given a great start to the new year, receiving a selection of gifts from Wyevale Garden Centre in Keynsham for their school wildlife garden. Among the gifts were a selection of vegetable and wild flower mix seeds, two insect houses and gift vouchers. The children from the gardening club quickly got to work and have since installed the insect houses. Over the next couple of months they will start sowing the seeds in the school garden and are looking forward to watching the wild flowers grow, creating some much-needed wildlife areas. It is hoped that the wildflowers will provide colour throughout the summer and attract pollinating insects such as honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies and moths.

Members of the St Keyna Green Team receive gifts from Wyevale Garden Centre representative Denise James that will help them create wildlifefriendly areas in the school grounds Eoin Keane, Wyevale Garden Centre manager, said: “The team at Keynsham Wyevale are absolutely delighted to support any local school initiative that teaches the importance of local and global biodiversity. “We cannot commend

Scouts are right on target – in more ways than one!

As 1st Keynsham Scouts close in on the £25,000 needed to replace the flooring at their Ashton Way HQ, there’s a chance for the community to stamp their feet on the old boards at a fundraising ceilidh next month. The group share their latest news... Under the Feet of Giants Appeal

Last April, when the Scouts launched their appeal for a new HQ floor, we thought it would take around two years to raise the money. Thanks to the support of so many people both outside and within our community we are delighted to announce that we have now hit £22,000 – which leaves just a further £3,000 to find. This is a truly fantastic effort – the work has been pencilled in for April in the hope that the target will be achieved in the not too distant future. So this is how you can support the appeal - it’s not too late! l Come to the ceilidh The Scouts are hosting an evening of dance, laughter, fun and enjoyment for all the family on Saturday, March 4. The Molecatchers have a great following in the north of Bristol and we are delighted that they have chosen to support this appeal with their first appearance to the south of the city. Bar facilities will be available to quench the thirst of the attendees. Come along and expect a surprise. To purchase tickets, at £7 each, speak to any Scout leader,

Getting to the point

When asked “Can we drive some stakes into your field for a plastic fencing course?” everybody wondered why we had a course to learn how to put up plastic fencing! All became clear and those leaders who attended not only gained a qualification but

also brought back plastic fencing to the Scout group. Yes, as you can see in the picture, it was fencing for young people, who learned all the skills of the sport but without the dangerous bits. Who knows, one may end up at a future Olympics! As always Keynsham Scouts seek adults who would like to get involved with Scouting in our community – I wonder what skill you would bring? Ladies will be entertained by a battle of the bands, a comedian and will be waited on by waiters and butlers. There will also be a drink on arrival, food and a raffle. Tickets for the evening, which starts at 7.30pm and runs until 11.30pm, are £10 from Somerdale Pavilion’s reception on 0117 986 5787. KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society

This late 1950s view of the west end of Keynsham High Street shows buildings that have changed little since then. On the left is No 4, Exon’s Dairy, run by the Exon Family until 1967 when it was sold to Bristol Dairies. Next to it is the Post Office, which occupied these premises from 1923 until the present building was opened in 1960. Further to the right is Milward House. n NEWS Certificates were handed out to those who completed the a cappella workshop with Black Sheep Harmony Chorus, pictured with chairman Noey McElwee on the right

Black Sheep singers share vocal secrets

Starting early on a frosty and beautiful Saturday morning in January, local a cappella singing group Black Sheep Harmony Chorus welcomed 15 guests to an intensive but fun singing workshop at Keynsham’s The Space. Under the tutelage of music director David Proud, the women

spent the day learning two songs in four parts before performing to family members at the end of the day to show how far they had come. A member of the Black Sheep group said: “A cappella singing or part singing with no piano or other instrumental accompaniment is a difficult game so our guests had a lot to learn. “During the course of the day

our music director, David Proud, gave us all nuggets of knowledge from his long years of directing choruses, from tips to achieve resonance, forward placement, and forward movement, breathing techniques and how to give musicality and performance to a song. “The event was sprinkled liberally with tea breaks and cake, with a chance to get to know our newcomers – a key

element to Black Sheep gettogethers! “We are always on the lookout for new members to our chorus – if you would like to come along and sing with us, or just venture in to find out what we do, visitors are welcome to our Thursday night rehearsals at Cadbury Heath Hall, 7.30pm.” For further information, visit www.blacksheepharmony.com or call 07954 170532.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Light Railway

when the Bristol Road was widened in 1822. The road level was also raised, probably more than once, but this did nothing to prevent the cottages from flooding, which they did frequently. Low walls along the road and the high doorsteps show the efforts made to prevent this. By 1948 the houses were in poor condition, with the Sanitary Inspector reporting that they had rising damp, leaking gutters, no scullery sinks and poor toilets, which led the council to put a compulsory purchase order on them. This led to the discovery that no one knew who owned the properties and no deeds existed! While they had been administered by the Keynsham Feoffees (a charitable body set up about the time they were built), ownership had never changed and could not be verified. The outcome was that in 1958 new bungalows were built to house the residents and the almshouses were threatened with demolition. Fortunately, they were purchased from the council by two brothers who converted the former six dwellings into the two houses that remain today, with the façade protected by Listed Building status.

More than one hundred people attended the society’s first meeting of the year to hear Paul Gregory give a comprehensive account of the history of this North Somerset railway and what remains of it today. He described the origins and operation of a somewhat quaint enterprise, which operated on a shoestring budget and hardly made any profit during its 43-year existence – indeed it spent the last 30 years in receivership. Under the energetic leadership of Colonel Stephens, who devoted his life to running such railways, it struggled on until the Second World War when it was closed and dismantled. Only some lengths of the trackbed, a few relics and many entertaining stories survive to remind us of its existence.

The Bridges Almshouses

Everyone in Keynsham has passed the row of almshouses on the Bristol Road many times but we don’t often pause to think about their origins. The original three pairs of two-storey houses were built by Sir Thomas Bridges, whose family had bought much of the land of Keynsham Abbey after its dissolution, and date from about 1685. Tradition has it that they were built to accommodate widows of men killed in the Monmouth Rebellion of that year, but there is no documentary proof of this. It is known that the six cottages were always occupied by widows, who used to wear quilted sunbonnets with long ribbons. Clearly visible on the facade, despite some weathering, are

substantially built, and provided a very good standard of accommodation for their time. Originally they had small gardens at the front, but these were lost

Our next evening talk takes us into the world of social history. Shirley Hodgson promises an insight into life in Victorian cities with her subject of “Wandering & Begging: Vagrant Children of Bristol”. The talk will be on Monday, February 20, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome. KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Help get our bike trail rolling! Keynsham in Bloom volunteers are already springing into action, with plenty of ideas for people of all ages to get involved in the initiative this year, including the start of work on a new floral bike trail for summer. Keynsham in Bloom chair Denise James tells us more.

T

here’s another productive year ahead for volunteers from Keynsham in Bloom, who are busy planning Keynsham’s entry into into the 2017 South West in Bloom competition. The group has decided that this year’s theme will be “Sunshine, blue skies and holidays” and will encourage bright and vibrantly coloured planting schemes. The theme will also encompass this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife theme, with pollinator friendly planting schemes. We can all make a difference by working together and enhancing our gardens and communal green spaces. Just filling a planter, hanging basket or border with some pollinator-friendly plants, or adding some wildflowers to our lawn will make a difference and encourage pollinator-friendly

A painted bike ready to be planted with flowers for the trail insects into our gardens. As in previous years we will be organising a number of competitions for children to enter. New for this year, we will be organising a growing competition, where children will be invited to display a garden in a seed tray and send in a photo of their garden to the town council offices in Temple Street. We would also like to encourage as many youngsters as possible to take part in the South West in Bloom 2017 Schools Painting Competition, which this year has the theme “My Favourite Season”. The age groups are: up to six years; seven to 11 years; and 12 to 16 years. Details of all the children’s competitions will be sent out to all schools. Entry forms will also be available soon for residents and community groups to enter our own Keynsham in Bloom gardening competition.

Bike Trail

Our Keynsham Bike Trail, which will see painted bikes planted with flowers and displayed around the town, is attracting a great deal of interest from both potential sponsors and local residents who would like to take part. We need community groups to volunteer to paint and plant up a bike or two or to sponsor the cost of this, which will be in the region of £40. We need members of our community to adopt a bike and look after it by watering it daily and feeding the plants on a regular basis. Bicycles are to be located at the volunteers’ premises provided that they are visible from the pavement or road and will form part of the bike trail around Keynsham. We have received five bicycles from Bath and North East Somerset from last year’s promotion of Bath

Tour of Britain stage. These are all painted up and awaiting sponsors to fit them out with planters etc, which is a marvellous start to our project. This will promote our town further as a tourist attraction and is a challenge to our town’s citizens to respond to our project whether by taking part in the bike trail or by taking responsibility for a bicycle. Of course, we are also asking residents if they can donate an old bicycle. Anyone who wants to find out more can contact Keynsham Town Council deputy clerk Dawn Drury on 0117 986 8683 or email deputytownclerk@keynsham-tc. gov.uk. All bicycles will need to be painted and planted out by late May/early June 2017 so that the plants will be reasonably well established for the South West in Bloom judges’ visit in mid-July and in time for the launch of the trail to coincide with the start of the school holidays.

How to get involved

Although it is not until July when judges from South West in Bloom visit Keynsham again, there is still lots of work and tasks to be done behind the scenes to ensure that Keynsham is looking its best. If anyone would like to know more about becoming a member of Keynsham in Bloom or they have a couple of free hours to help with planting up some of our community floral displays, then please contact us via Keynsham Town Council office at 15-17 Temple Street or on 0117 986 8683.

LETTER FROM YOUR MP

Jacob Rees-Mogg

T

he speech by the Prime Minister, Theresa May, on leaving the European Union is a model of clarity and propriety. Its clarity lies in the objectives that it has set out for the negotiations to leave under Article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union. Perhaps the key phrase is that “no deal is better than a bad deal”. Mrs May is going to enter the discussions with steely determination and objectives that the British people will be able to measure. Primary of all of them is that there shall be no further jurisdiction for the European Court of Justice. On the international field it is one thing for the United Kingdom to agree as a matter of

goodwill to cooperate with foreign nations, it is quite another for their laws to be imposed upon us. Outside the ECJ’s control we have clearly left the EU. This inevitably meant we had to depart from the internal market, sometimes called the single market, which would have handed control straight back to Luxembourg. It is also wise that we will only keep elements of the Custom Union if it is compatible with making our own arrangements with other nations. One of the main prizes of Brexit is free trade which the Customs Union would stop. Once more the clarity that Brexit means Brexit shines through. It is right that Mrs May wants to protect individuals by allowing those who are legally here to stay and offering to agree that early if the other side cooperates. The propriety is crucial as well. Mrs May has accepted the sovereign judgement of the British people and is not trying to evade the decision of the Referendum. There are no weasel words or obfuscation, how different from the approach of a Eurocrat. www.jacobreesmogg.com

In the party spirit If the first incarnation of Keynsham Music Festival was held in 1996, there seems to be no record of it – but a year later the town enjoyed a week-long programme of events. The Keynsham Cavaliers Youth Marching Band were kept busy throughout with several appearances at the clocktower and in the Memorial Park – although this would have been adjourned to Broadlands School if it had rained. If the weather was bad, there were plenty of indoor venues involved in which to shelter and enjoy some local music – and there was no fear of rain spoiling play on the Sunday, either, as the big day in the park hadn’t yet been introduced. Instead, there was a Festival Jamboree on the first Saturday in the Scout Hut with music workshops, while elsewhere throughout the festival people could see the Free Spirit Band, St John’s Choir, Somerset Morris Maids and Keynsham Orchestra, as well as Keynsham Brass Band bringing the week to a close with an open-air concert in the park. Fast-forward seven years to 2004 and a cutting from the Bristol Observer was previewing an event with a “Notting Hill Carnival” flavour. The week-long festival had been distilled into a one-day music extravaganza attracting some of the region’s top performers in previous years but was now incorporating the Saturday, too, with a Caribbeanthemed street party and procession, before the main show in the Memorial Park on the Sunday. Since then, it has been named one of the UK’s top three free summer events in a national

In 2004 the festival took place over two days magazine and in 2017, the festival is once again back as a week-long celebration of music and local talent from Monday, June 26 until Sunday, July 2. Organisers have been working hard to plan a special event for its anniversary year, with plenty of ideas put forward by supporters, too. As well as celebrating the festival’s own anniversary, the event will be helping Keynsham and District Twinning Association mark 40 years of twinning with Libourne in France. In one event already put into the festival diary, the Top Stage will play host to Strictly Come Keynsham on Friday, June 30, offering big band, swing and ballroom with a French flavour. There is still time for anyone in the town to share any ideas that come to mind. Get in touch via Keynsham Town Council on 0117 986 8683, email info@ keynshamfest.co.uk or find Keynsham Music Festival on Facebook.

BACK TO NATURE with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

D

espite a cold January evening, a record audience turned out for Mya-Rose Craig’s talk “Born a Birder” at Keynsham Baptist Church Hall, writes Kathy Farrell, treasurer of Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham Group. “Birdgirl” regaled us with amusing tales of her upbringing in a birding family, when she was first taken birding at the tender age of seven days old. In 2009 she featured with her family in the BBC program Birdwatchers – A Very British Obsession. I remember watching this at the time not realising that in the future I would be inspired by her commitment to the natural world. We can all share Mya-Rose’s youthful enthusiasm for wildlife as the days start to grow longer during February. Head out into your garden to listen to the bird song – absent at the end of the year apart from the odd robin or blackbird. Our garden birds are now very much in evidence with

their song playing out from the tops of hedges and trees. In the mating game, species like sparrow, wood pigeons and collared doves reaffirm their lifetime bond. Other species taking part in the Valentine’s event are birds that

have spent the winter apart and come together for the breeding season, including blackbirds, chaffinches, tits and robins. But of course many species enter the breeding season with no mate and this period is spent advertising their presence and assessing or competing for mates. This is such an important time for birds – choosing with which partner to raise a new family. Although not too much is known about how many birds each contemplate before they make their choice of mate, what is sure is that song forms an important part of the ritual, particularly by the male. It helps to space out males into territories and define them as individuals, enabling females to form opinions about them. Song is the equivalent of a lonely hearts column in the local newspaper: “I’m unpaired and seeking…” So this February listen out for the birds in your garden or in the park and remember what the

bird song is all about – it is their equivalent of Valentine’s Day. A chance to look for a new partner or reaffirm the bonds of the established couple! Keynsham Avon Wildlife Trust Group’s February meeting, “Botanical Treasures of the Mendips”, features distinguished botanist Helena Crouch, who will enlighten us on the unique and characteristic flora of the Mendips. Helena has had a life-long interest in plants with a degree in botany and a PhD in the field of plant succession. She carries out survey work for Natural England, Plantlife and Somerset Wildlife Trust. The talk will take place on Friday, February 10, at Keynsham Baptist Church at 7.30pm. February also features our first walk of the year on Sunday, February 26, at 11am – “Lichens of the Bristol Downs” with Sheila Quinn. Meet at the Water Tower (BS9 1PH) at 10am. Help for small firms getting to grips with pension rules Small employers in the greater Bristol area are to get a helping hand from Keynshamvoice, a city MP and the Pensions Regulator as they prepare for major pension reforms that will see most workers enrolled into a workplace pension scheme. Charlotte Leslie, MP for Bristol North West, pictured, will be hosting an event – sponsored by Keynshamvoice parent company Local Voice Network – for small employers in the area on April 10, 2017 to get the message out that automatic enrolment into workplace pensions applies to them and to help them get to grips with what they need to do. An expert from The Pensions Regulator will be attending to provide specialist guidance for local employers. Employers are invited to come along to Orchard School Bristol in Horfield, BS7 0XZ at 1pm on Monday, April 10, to learn more about preparing for automatic enrolment and to pose questions to pensions experts. The event is free and there will be refreshments provided It will help small employers understand what’s required of them and get automatic enrolment right for their workers. There will also be information on what to consider

when choosing a pension scheme, making the most of payroll software and how to tell your staff about workplace pensions. Ms Leslie said: “It doesn’t matter if you’re a shopkeeper, a plumber or if you employ somebody in your home – if you employ at least one person then you’re an employer and will have new duties. Failing to get it right could lead to a fine, so it’s important that every small business understands that automatic enrolment applies to them, what they need to do and by when. “I’m keen to help small businesses get automatic enrolment right, so I will be holding this event for local employers on April 10 where you’ll have the chance to find out what you need to do, and by when. I’ll be joined by experts from the Pensions Regulator, so this is a great opportunity to get specialist guidance and support on how to enrol your workers into workplace pensions with ease and ask questions about how this important reform applies to you.” Register for the event at www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/workplacepensions-what-bosses-in-bristolneed-to-know-free-eventtickets-30884560552

GARDENING TIPS In the garden

autumn I had covered them with dead leaves and forgotten them. To my delight, when I cleared some leaves there were the new flowers forming, some three to four inches long. Some feed was applied and soon there will be some beautiful flowers. This reminded me of the other early flowers, and I looked for the camellia, which I have been feeding regularly, and there it was with many buds waiting to develop. So something to look forward to next month. It is still too early to do much, but some preparatory work can be done. Fences, posts, gates and pergolas can all be repaired, replaced or treated on a mild day, so have the necessary bits and

pieces ready to hand. Check the taps on water butts and outdoor mains water taps. They have a nasty habit of not turning on, or if they do of not turning off! Wandering around the garden in the last few days gave me a very encouraging outlook. I have already mentioned the camellia but I noticed the little dumpy winter aconites with their small, round yellow flowers. The euphorbias with their yellow flowers have spread again. But the prize find was the Clematis cirrhosis "Freckles", which climbs up the plum tree. Such a wispy, fragile frame and the beautiful flowers hang down so delicately. Looking up into the flower one can see the freckles

of its name. How can such an insignificant looking plant produce such elegance in the middle of winter? The winter flowering jasmine has some yellow flowers despite being trimmed at the wrong time, the Cornus alba shows its coral stems in the sunshine and the forsythia is coming on nicely. So we are not short of colour. Probably the main job now is pruning roses. I always reduce ours in the autumn, but now is the time to cut back stems, and take out dead and diseased branches. Check when cutting that the wood is a creamy colour. If not, cut back further. Tall grasses can be trimmed and edges squared off.

Herbs such as thyme, rosemary and oregano are good January has been reasonably for pollinators and useful in the dry and frosty so hopefully this kitchen. Favourites for honey bees has helped in killing off some are plants with many small flowers overwintering pests. Now is the such as lavender and heathers, time to start planning for the those with open single or bellcoming season so this year give shaped flowers (asters or cosmos some thought and help to the and campanula) and scented pollinating insects that are so flowers such as sweet peas or important to the food chain. There is no harm in buying now as

long as you can store them in a cool place but delay planting until there is a dry spell when the ground can be prepared beforehand. Seed potatoes need to be allowed to grow shoots (chitted) first so place them in a tray (old egg boxes are ideal) with the “eyes” facing upwards in a light, frost-free place but not in direct sunlight. Shoots will appear and when they are a half to one-inch tall they are ready for planting. Early varieties can be planted in late March followed by main crop varieties in April. Remember, potatoes take up a lot of space and like most vegetables should not be planted in the same area every year so if your plot is small, stick to buying

yours from the shops and grow other vegetables instead. February is the time to prune late summer/autumn fruiting raspberries. This needs to be done every year but only for this variety as the crop grows on this year’s new growth. Prune all of last year’s growth to ground level, remove any weeds and gently fork the surface before adding fertilizer high in potash, covered by a layer of well rotted manure or compost. Raspberries have a habit of spreading so contain this by digging up any that you don’t need and offer them to a neighbour who would like to grow them but note the crop from these transplants may not be great in the first year.

We had some cold, dreary and wet weather in January, and the garden looked very bedraggled and forlorn. I decided that some work was needed and started by clearing the dead, damp leaves from all the hardstanding. This had an immediate effect on the garden, with paths and patio all clearly defined. The leaves went into the big green bin and I felt encouraged. I had a walk around the perimeter of the plot and noticed the tiny spearheads of a multitude of snowdrops, and the bigger blades of the daffodils. This reminded me that I had neglected to check the hellebores. Last

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng This was recommended to me by a former library assistant and I am very glad she did. This is a mesmerising book and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2012. The story is mainly centred on Yun Ling, a retired Malaysian judge who returns to the highlands of Malaya and to a garden she helped build after the war with Aritomo, a mysterious former gardener to the Emperor of Japan. The garden was to be built in memory of Yun Ling’s sister who was killed during the occupation of their country. Yun Ling becomes an apprentice to Aritomo and so begins her journey to making peace with her wartime experiences and learning the ancient art of Japanese gardens. Also linked with the story are Magnus and Emily – owners of the neighbouring tea plantation – and their son, Frederik. This book is beautifully written, in particular the descriptions of the lush landscapes of Malaya with the intricate design of a formal Japanese garden. Finally it is a story of redemption, duty and history.

Adult Audio Book

Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala Read by the actress Julie Christie, who actually starred in the 1983 film Heat & Dust by James Ivory, this rich and romantic tale is initially about Olivia, a beautiful and yet bored wife of an English Civil servant in the British Raj

of India in 1923. She shocked the English community by eloping with an Indian prince, Nawab of Khatm. Fifty years later Olivia’s stepgranddaughter goes back to India to discover more about Olivia’s story. Armed with Olivia’s letters, she goes back to the ‘heat and dust’ of the places Olivia visited and she too is enchanted by India and its people. At its heart this is a love story for both women but also coincides with the huge changes India faced both culturally and politically in the 20th century.

Adult Non-Fiction

Start Knitting by Betty Barnden Fancy embarking on a new hobby in 2017? Then why not try your hand at knitting? This simple book gives very clear guidelines to hand knitting, what equipment is needed, what balls of wool to use and how to hold the needles, plus simple stitches. Once the basics are learnt, the book turns to more complex skills such as shaping and using two colours. Packed with great colour pictures and handy snippets of information this is a must-have book for beginners as well as a valuable reference tool for more experienced knitters. Also look out for more specific knitting books upstairs in Keynsham Library in the Arts & Crafts section.

Children’s DVD

The Jungle Book (2016) as reviewed by Debbie Bellinger, Keynsham Library Assistant This is a really great family movie with just the right mix of special effects, and famous voices. The CGI characters are excellent and there is an entertaining atmosphere of humour, adventure and suspense. Bill Murray as Baloo was a piece of casting genius. Raised by a family of wolves since birth, Mowgli (Neel Seth) must leave the only home he’s ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) unleashes his might roar. Guided by a nononsense panther (Ben Kingsley) and a free-spirited bear (Bill Murray), the young boy meets an array of jungle animals, including a slithery python and a smoothtalking ape. Along the way, Mowgli learns valuable life lessons as his epic journey of self-discovery leads to fun and adventure. My favourite scenes are when Mowgli meets King Louie in the temple! Look out for some of the smaller animals too, they are also very well animated and come to life with characters of their own.

Picture Books for Younger Children

Walter & the No-Need-To Worry suit by Rachel Bright Walter is the biggest worrier in Woollybottom. Normally, Walter worries about everyday things, but on the occasion of the ‘The Woollybottom Summer Super

SeriouslyCompetitive Sports and Fun day’, his worries escalate out of all control. In an attempt to calm him down, Walter’s friends make him a special ‘No-Need-To-Worry Suit’. Find out whether it works or not! This is a brilliant book for any little ones who tend to fret (and it’s also good fun for those adults among us who would benefit from a ‘No-Need-To-WorrySuit’!).

OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

Walkers get creative after a winter stroll It has been a very busy five weeks for the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome, with three walks over this brief period. At the first, 20 walkers in festive mood, and with secateurs in hand, set off from the Memorial Park cafe on Sunday, December 18, for a short stroll to Keynsham Cemetery, stopping along the way to collect greenery from the hedgerows. Upon reaching the destination, serious plant clipping started in earnest, as we all tried to add some colour and differing varieties to our collection With bags full, we headed back to the Scout Hall, where well-known florist and flower arranger Liz Fox was waiting for us. She then proceeded, very eloquently, to instruct us in the art of wreathmaking. Mulled wine and mince pies, kindly supplied by Tesco, were available to help the event go with a festive buzz. Liz commented on the high standard that had been achieved, and all the walkers took their wreaths home after the event. A good social time was had by all Our thanks go to Liz Fox and Terry Dove of the 1st Keynsham Scout Group for giving up their Sunday morning to help us with this successful event. The second walk on January 8 was a much more serious affair with 24 walkers keen to wipe away any festive hangovers walking to Bath from Keynsham. This ninemile trek took us along the River Avon, then linked up with the Bath and Bristol cycle path, and headed towards Saltford. Here we stopped for refreshments and were regally

looked after by the welcoming staff at the Bird in Hand. Suitably fortified, we then continued, at a steady pace, on the remaining section into Bath, arriving about four hours after we started from

Keynsham. We did find time to see a variety of flora and fauna on the way. Two intrepid lady walkers, not content with that, decided to walk back to Saltford! It was a relieved, weary but happy bunch that assembled at the bus station for the trip back to Keynsham. At the recent meeting it was agreed that where we had a lengthy walk on the programme, we would add a shorter walk in that month for beginners or those who just like an amble. With that in mind, on January 22, 20 people, including four new walkers, set off for a 1.5-mile walk around the Memorial Park for an informative stroll, stopping at the Bonzo Lounge for a refreshing drink.

n NEWS

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH with Kevin Durrant, minister of Keynsham Baptist Church

I

arrived in Keynsham four months ago to become the minister of its Baptist Church. It’s been great to get to know a town with so many friendly people and such a range of organisations working for the good of the community. Being new, I’ve tried to make a favourable impression, but am painfully aware that this carries with it the risk I will end up offering an air-brushed image of who I really am. To help me to resist this temptation, I remind myself of an incident recounted by one of my colleagues at teacher training college many years ago. He’d been asked to teach a primary class about Scott of the Antarctic. He began by setting the scene, describing an icy wasteland

The subject of truth seems to be dominating our news at present... The fish-eating reindeer strikes again!

without vegetation, and then proceeded to assert the absence of all animals except for the occasional reindeer. One bright lad put his hand up and asked, “If there’s no vegetation, what do the reindeer eat?” Instead of admitting his mistake, my colleague replied, “They eat fish.” The hand went up again: “How do they catch them?” Getting desperate, my colleague said, “Well, they dig a hole in the ice, lower their heads and spear them with their antlers.” The image this conjured up – of reindeer walking around with fish kebabs for headgear – was so ridiculous he quickly changed the subject! I’m not sure how much the children learnt about the Antarctic, but we students learnt the importance of not massaging the facts, as the truth has a habit of coming out in the end. The subject of truth seems to

STORAGE

be dominating our news at present, with the unravelling of claims made during the Brexit campaign, the questionable pronouncements issued by Donald Trump prior to his election, and the concerns over “fake news.” As I write this, a controversy has just erupted over the Government’s failure to come clean about a routine Trident missile test that misfired. The fish-eating reindeer strikes again! For Christians, truth-telling is crucial, given that we follow someone whose execution resulted from misinformation and a manipulated mob, but whose own truthfulness has stood the test of time. Thankfully, Jesus is described as “full of grace and truth” which means that when we’ve indulged in some air-brushing and flannel, he will graciously forgive and re-direct us.

Coffee morning to help care for carers Members of Saltford Golf Club’s Ladies’ Section are inviting local people to enjoy a cup of coffee and help them raise funds for a good cause. Captain Debbie Dardis has chosen to support Friends of Young Carers (Bath and North East Somerset) during 2017, which will receive the proceeds from a number of fundraising events organised by the golfers. A coffee morning will be held at the golf club, in Golf Club Lane, on Thursday, February 23, from 10am and admission will cost £1.50 to include coffee and biscuits. A spokesperson for the ladies’ section said: “Friends of Young Carers (Bath and North East Somerset) was formed in 2007 and supports young people up to the age of 18 from any ethnic or social background who have caring responsibilities in their home.” Currently there are more than 400 youngsters registered with the charity across B&NES.

INTERIORS

Scandi sheepskin and schnapps...

with interior designer Zoe Hewitt

If you are a fan of interiors, you have probably seen the unpronounceable word ‘hygge' or ‘hyggelig' mentioned everywhere over the last year, from Instagram to magazines and coffee table tomes. A Danish term for a concept we don’t quite have an equivalent of, it means approximately ‘cosy’. Normally, it is used to describe the warm fuzzy feeling you get when intimately spending quality time with friends, for example. Like any industry fickle enough to succumb to and be influenced by trends, the interiors world has wholeheartedly embraced this delightful image of stylish Scandinavians cosying up under beautiful blankets. The more cynical among us might say this is just another marketing bandwagon aimed at separating consumers from their disposable income, with hygge branded throws, sheepskins, vases and so on. A candle with the word

hyggelig printed on it makes a room no more snug than a simple unbranded night-lite, tallow or taper, after all!

The best way to inject an authentic hygge atmosphere to your home is to invite close friends around to pass the time together on the last long dark evenings before spring comes. By all means light the fire if you have one, add plenty of candlelight, textured throws, and a schnapps, bitters or hot chocolate. Or if you find solace in solitude, there is no better way to savour a few quiet moments than curling up with a good read. Transform a quiet corner of your home into an inviting book nook, with a comfortable chair, good reading light, nice warming drink, and a cosy cushion or throw. Use items you already own and cherish with each use, and simply imagine our pre-television Scandinavian counterparts enjoying the sagas or some other opus at the cosiest of firesides during seemingly endless winters. You surely can’t get more hygge than that.

n MOTORING REVIEW

Super mini C3 packs in plenty of extras What is luxury for one generation is considered standard by the next. Take the average British house. In the Fifties, families kept warm with one coal fire and a lot of clothes; bathroom arrangements were often to be found at the bottom of the garden. Now it’s all central heating, log burners and two ensuites in your semi. As with houses, so it is with cars. Those of us with the odd grey hair will remember owning cars that you were just grateful to get started. It was the sole domain of those with big pockets to enjoy the luxuries of the added extras. Now it seems most cars can provide the wow factor. Take the new Citroen C3. Having driven the Flair edition for a few days it’s hard to believe this is a ‘super mini’. Keyless entry and ignition is just the start of it. It has a well thought-out touch screen system with a clear sat nav, DAB radio and hands-free

The new Citroen C3’s kit includes keyless entry and ignition, sat nav, DAB radio and hands-free controls phone controls – three things that were certainly deemed a luxury until a few years ago. There’s a lot packed into a small body to help the driver. In reverse there’s not only parking sensors, but a camera as well. At the other end of the car there’s Citroen’s ‘Connected Cam’, a dash cam that’s tucked away behind the mirror and records what is happening on the road; very useful should you be victim to a “crash for cash” cowboy (a modern trend that’s not so welcome). The better equipped models

can offer lane departure warning systems, blind spot monitors, hill assist and, of course, the connectivity to your smart phone that modern-day life demands. Putting the tech to one side, the car is a pretty good drive as well. A smooth ride is also a quiet one, unless you put your foot down, whereupon the 1,200cc PureTech petrol engine sounds pleasantly throaty. It looks good for a small car too. Citroen offers 36 colour combinations, not always a good thing for a procrastinator like me. Outside it looks beefy and

full of intent, helped by the intricate wheels. The interior styling is, well, stylish, from the flashes of colour on the dash that mirror the exterior to the luggage style door handles. It’s spacious enough, with drivers over 6ft tall still able to stretch out. The passenger behind them won’t, though. There are a few small niggles; the stop-start engine system didn’t seem to want to engage for me, and the keyless ignition took a couple of attempts to master. But these are small matters. If you are busy doing school runs, trips to the vets and generally keeping the world spinning, this is an excellent contender. It may not offer much that isn’t offered elsewhere, but it packages it together well and at a good price. Citroen are very proud of their motoring heritage, but the new C3 is a reminder that they are focused very much on the future. Richard Drew

Home team face ‘Goliath’ in FA Cup round Keynsham Town Ladies’ Football team will have to punch well above their weight on Sunday, February 5, when they take on Super League Durham in the third round proper of the SSE Women’s FA Cup at the AJN Stadium. Manager Barrie Newton said the match will be the biggest game for the team since they were drawn away to Arsenal some six years ago, with his parttime players taking on professionals who train every day. The team have triumphed away at Buckland, in Devon, Chichester in Sussex and Regents Park in London before beating

Basildon from the division above them at Canvey Island in Essex. And while it was a relief to get a home tie, Keynsham will be “more than the underdogs”, said Barrie. “If you look at our Super League opponents, not only are we divisions and leagues below them, but Durham are full-time professionals that train every day with a budget of circa £90,000 to £110,000, of which the FA gifts them nearly a half. We get £600 of travel expenses, which hardly covers two away games, and my players are hairdressers, students, personal trainers,

VAN GRAPHICS

shop assistants and physios, so we hope for some support from the town for a game that kicks off at 1pm on the main pitch at the AJN Stadium.” Another away game would have tested the club’s finances, he said, but the players will be giving 110 per cent when they meet Durham – and their unknown status could play to the home team’s advantage. “We are the lowest ranked club left in the FA Cup by a long chalk, but we have a good record at our level, being undefeated in 13 out of the past 15 matches. “Certainly, we know Durham are quality and have just signed a

Scottish international this week, but they will know little about us and we could be a banana skin for them – we have absolutely nothing to lose. “If I had to pick players that could stand out it would be Katie Cook, our centre forward who has hit hat tricks in her last two matches, midfielder Jade Radburn, who has come back so quickly from a serious ACL injury, and Geovana Alves, who has electric pace and an eye for the unpredictable. “Yes, it really is a David v Goliath encounter – but we all know how that turned out. And we can but dream!”

Netballers do school and county proud A group of netball players from Keynsham performed to their “absolute maximum” as they represented Avon in a tournament that brought together teams from seven counties across the South West to battle for just two places in the finals. Wellsway School’s Under-19 squad travelled to Marlborough College in Wiltshire on January 28, having won a place in the regional round of the National Schools Championships, which saw 42 teams competing across three age groups for the chance to represent the South West in March. The girls played six matches during the day, winning an impressive four but finishing third in their group and just missing out on a place in the semi-finals. Louise Riddoch, director of specialism at Wellsway, said: “Congratulations go to the entire squad for their performance on

Our thanks also go to all the families who travelled to Marlborough to support the girls on the day. It was much appreciated and there is no doubt that the girls did the school and their families proud.” The squad took to the netball courts in brand new kit sponsored by Keynsham

construction firm Dribuild. The company stepped in to fund netball dresses and hoodies, emblazoned with Wellsway and Dribuild logos, after hearing through an employee that the girls had been appealing for support in the run-up to the tournament. Dribuild director Dave Kipling: “At Dribuild, we have always had a very strong

belief that we should make a conscientious effort to support local communities and, as such, Dribuild has a passionate, unrivalled CSR (corporate social responsibility) programme. Not only do we pledge to raise thousands of pounds for local charities, we actively support local sporting teams and events. “When the netball team from Wellsway asked us for help, as a company with our head office in Keynsham, we were only too happy to step in and sponsor their new kit. Dribuild is so proud to make a difference and to be part of the team’s achievement while being able to share our own, is fantastic.” Mrs Riddoch added: “It’s amazing to have a local company as a sponsor. It’s brilliant for the players to have that quality of kit – mainly private schools go through to the regional finals and they have access to the best kit so we are very appreciative to have this sponsorship.”

n SPORT It’s some months until the end of the 2016-17 season, but Fry Club FC’s First Team can already celebrate a victory. The team were announced winners of the mid-season Somerset FA Respect Award and last month team captain Kris Allen was presented with the £250 prize by Roy Penney, Somerset County League chairman, and general secretary David Braithwaite at the Somerdale Pavilion. The award, which is part of a national drive by the FA to promote fair play and good behaviour in football, is based on scores given by referees after each match in the league. Marks are given for factors such as the captain’s, players’ and management’s attitude towards match officials and players’ and spectators’ behaviour, and can be deducted if players are sent off or for other unsporting behaviour. The team have also previously been end-of-season Respect winners and are hoping to repeat that performance this year as they continue to promote

Kris said: “This award is not only an honour for the First Team, but is recognition for the

The First Team thanks both the management of Fry Club and the Somerset County League for making this possible.” The First Team are currently sitting mid-table in the Somerset County Premier Division, finding their feet after starting the season with a new management team and several new players. Since the middle of October, they have won nine out of their last 11 games, drawing one game and only losing to top-of-thetable Nailsea and Tickenham. Their most recent performance saw them score a 2-0 win over fifth-placed Middlezoy Rovers on January 28.

n SPORT 7.45pm kick-off

KEYNSHAM TOWN FC

Tuesday, February 21 Paulton Rovers (Somerset Premier Cup Quarter Final) 7.45pm kick-off Saturday, February 25 Wellington (League) 3pm kick-off

News from the Crown Field January saw mixed fortunes for Keynsham Town’s First Team in the Toolstation Western League Division One, with two wins and two defeats.

After the excellent 2-1 Boxing Day victory at home to Hengrove Athletic, the first Saturday of January saw local rivals Oldland Abbotonians visit Crown Fields and leave with all three points in front of a crowd of 127. It was an off day for the Ks, as they were caught cold in the opening minutes and after hitting the woodwork twice in the first half found themselves 2-0 down at the break. The third goal early in the second half made it a real uphill task. To their credit, Keynsham kept going and after pulling a goal back with a glancing header from Jordan Anstey, they should have scored again with Nathan Curnock, who spurned two great opportunities. However, they bounced back the following Saturday with a hard-fought away win at Portishead Town, hanging on through seemingly endless stoppage time to record a 2-1 victory. The first half wasn't anything to write home about, but Keynsham stepped up a gear in the second half with goals from Ben Harris and Jordan Anstey. The defence was resolute as Portishead pushed for a late equaliser and the ninth away win of the season was just about deserved. Next up in front of another bumper Crown Fields crowd of 178, their third successive home gate in excess of 100, was a typically topsy-turvy afternoon for the Ks, as they came back from two goals down with 10 minutes of normal time left to nick a crucial 3-2 win at home to Wincanton Town. Leading scorer Matt Brown notched twice to take his tally for the season to 21, with a deflected Ben Harris cross-shot sealing the win.

Player of the month

Nathan Curnock at Portishead; an aerial view of the Crown Field

Manager Chris King said: “I have had the luxury of seeing videos of the games over the last couple of weeks now Adam Rees has volunteered to do the filming. It really helps to look back over key moments and our general play. Having watched the Wincanton game back, I thought we played reasonably well. We moved the ball faster like we had asked the lads, we worked harder out of possession, we just missed our goal-scoring chances when they came in the first half. Boxy, Matt Curnock and Browner all had opportunities, but we didn’t take them and then right on half time we conceded a soft goal from Wincanton’s first real chance. “We came out and dominated the second half, but then conceded a second goal from a corner, which is always annoying and it looked like it wasn’t going to be our day. But we didn’t stop playing, Ben Harris got on the ball and kept creating and Browner found his shooting

boots just when we needed him. Kyle Box played a great through ball for the second goal and you could just sense a winner coming once we got that one. Ben’s deflected cross in the last minute was that bit of luck we needed right at the end of the game.” Club secretary Julian French said: “It just showed what a great “never say die” attitude the lads have, but many more games like this and the defibrillator will be needed on the terraces!” The final game of the month saw the Ks fall to a shock 2-0 home reverse against Westbury United. The home side looked flat all afternoon and had no end product despite a lot of possession. Two second-half goals in the space of five minutes decided the game in what was undoubtedly a setback for Keynsham in their quest for their first promotion since 2001.

Forthcoming home games

Friday, February 17 Bishop Sutton (League)

The club’s December Player of the Month Award went to Nathan Curnock. Chris King said: “Nathan is one of our most consistent players and since making his return from injury in September he’s been terrific. He joined us at the start of last season from a lower level, but has developed into a great attacking full back. His versatility means he can play several positions and this is a great option for us. “What I really like about Nath is his composure with the ball and then his tenacity to get the ball back when he doesn’t have it. If he keeps working on his game from a defensive and attacking point of view, he can turn into a top player. Several of our defenders did run Nath close this time round, with Tauren Williams, Jordan Anstey and Mike Preedy having good games throughout the month. But the award for December went to Nath. Well done, keep it going!” Off the field, the club’s “Forecast 3” prize pot has still not been won since late August, with the jackpot currently standing at £1,232! The next set of games will be on Saturday, February 4. Tickets only cost £2, with half the proceeds going towards the running costs of the club as a whole and half into the prize fund. If you want a chance to win, please contact Julian French on 07814 609853. Meanwhile, December’s 500 Club winners were Gary Lyons (£40), Natalie Spacey (£20) and Tony Smith (£10). Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).

n SPORT Bowlers take game indoors for winter

While it’s the closed season on the bowling green in Keynsham Memorial Park, many members of Keynsham Bowling Club “keep their eye in” by playing indoors, writes our correspondent. On a Monday morning, 16 players travel to the Purnells Club at Paulton to play, while on a Thursday up to 30 members drive to the North Wiltshire Bowling Club at Chippenham. The two-hour bowling session there is followed by anything from a bacon sandwich to a full cooked breakfast. About 15 other members have joined the Bristol Indoor Bowls Club at Ashton and play there at different times of the week. While playing indoors is very different to the outside game it does keep activity levels up during the winter months. Our picture shows the Purnells group gathered on the rink.

facilities are fantastic and we look forward to a long and happy stay.” Patrick Shanahan, Somerdale’s general manager, said: “We are delighted we have been able to accommodate a growing sport here and look forward to seeing its development.” The club hopes to add a third team and a youth programme in the near future and is holding a taster session on Sunday, March 26, in Bath.
