Plans are branded onto A4 to serve

From Page 1 junction from the site onto the A4, opposite the grounds of Ellsbridge House. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s development control committee voted in favour of the junction scheme, which replaces the original proposal for a traffic lightcontrolled junction onto the A4. Council officers reported that traffic modelling had showed traffic lights at the site could result in “significant queues” of up to 50 vehicles on the Bath Road at peak times. A priority junction, which wouldn’t have lights, would have much less of an impact – although they pointed out that the model showed people wanting to turn right from the new development a peak times would face “extreme delays”. A new light-controlled pedestrian crossing to the east of the junction would create gaps in the traffic, however, officers said, while motorists could also choose to turn left and go around Broadmead roundabout. Approval for the junction is a major step forward for Mactaggart and Mickel’s housing development scheme, which has attracted 398 objections and general comments and just two statements of support since it was submitted to the council for consideration in February. Speaking at the development

control meeting on December 14, Saltford councillor Emma Dixon said the proposed estate between the village and Keynsham was “a step towards the eventual merger of the two communities, something to which both are completely opposed”. Addressing the proposal for the crossing, Ms Dixon said: “To add yet more traffic onto this heavily congested route, with just one access for vehicles into the site and out of the site is frankly complete madness.” She also raised concerns that building on the land – called Breaches Gate locally and which

Keynsham councillor Bryan Organ, a member of the development control committee, said he was completely opposed to the proposals for the site because of concerns over drainage, future provision for secondary-age children, traffic and air quality on the A4, and said: “The A4 is becoming a nightmare – this is an opportunity to look at it properly.” In his 30 years of local government experience, he said, nothing had made the main routes in the area, including the A4, any better and added: “Somewhere along the line we

haven’t got it right and it’s time we did.” The proposal for the junction was passed, however, with eight votes in favour and two against. A detailed application for the housing development, which also includes a new primary school, will be drawn up for consideration at a future date.

Dial-a-Ride team thanked after Blight or raising the alarm for passenger

N

EW

Looking out for elderly or vulnerable members of the community is always something we’re reminded of over the festive season. But for volunteers and staff at Keynsham and District Dial-aRide, keeping an eye out for any signs that all is not well with any of the service’s 1,400 members is an everyday part of the role – as one incident earlier this year highlighted in particular, and which Keynshamvoice felt should be shared with readers. Worried by the absence of a female passenger who made a trip to local shops every Monday, one of the charity’s drivers visited her home a number of times while the office attempted to call the emergency contact she had provided. Unable to get any answer, the team called the police, who

discovered the elderly woman had suffered a fall over the weekend and she was taken to hospital. Sadly, she passed away soon after but her family thanked the service and its volunteers and staff for all they had done and, as a result, said manager Terry Hopkins, the Dial-a-Ride team had since decided to speed up the procedure for tackling any concerns about their members even more to ensure action was taken within 24 hours.

He said: “It was something we were all very upset by – she was a lovely lady. Our drivers do lots of things for our members that we don’t publicise, such as picking up some shopping for a sick resident or delivering samples to doctors’ surgeries if people are unable to go out themselves, or knocking on neighbours’ doors to find out if they’re OK if we can’t get an answer at home. “We are a family, our members are part of the community and that’s important – it could be my parents who need that extra help next time. We just get on and do it.” Anyone interested in finding out more about Dial-a-Ride, which covers Keynsham, Saltford and surrounding villages as well as providing regular trips to Bath, supermarkets and garden centres, can call 01225 395321.

If residents of Saltford don’t want a bypass, there will be no bypass – that was the message from leaders of Bath and North East Somerset Council who attended a packed public meeting last month. Around 200 people filled a room at Saltford Golf Club to discuss the issue after a blueprint showing how the West of England could be developed over the next 20 years included a bypass skirting the south of the village among a raft of suggestions for improving transport in the coming years. Such a scheme could turn Saltford “into an island surrounded by traffic”, said chairman of Keynsham and Saltford Liberal Democrats Duncan Hounsell, damaging businesses on the A4 and creating a “planning blight for a generation” even if it was never eventually built. The map from the transport study showing a road to the south of Saltford, far left – the route shown is for illustration purposes; the packed public meeting councillor Francine Haeberling cautioned residents not to “throw the baby out with the bath water” by removing the option from the Joint Transport Study, however, as a large number of houses were being proposed, bringing more traffic onto the roads. She said: “What we put into the draft plan may never happen. On the other hand, if it’s not in the plan it definitely will never happen – if you want it to happen, if you think in the next 20 years it should happen, then we need to support it and get it

into the draft strategy.” The meeting was attended by B&NES Council leader Tim Warren and transport chief Anthony Clarke, who said he didn’t believe a bypass was “viable” and was backing calls to ease traffic with a southern relief road around Bristol, taking vehicles from a new junction off the M4 around Bristol, to meet up with the M5. Many at the meeting called on councillors and planners to look at other transport options for the Saltford area, such as

a light railway. Meanwhile, former parish council chairman Reg Williams called for another village-wide poll on the issue 14 years after the first, which came out in favour of a bypass, he said. Other residents said they wanted to see the blue line denoting a potential bypass – which didn’t show an exact route but was for illustrative purposes only, the council leaders said – removed from the document immediately. A public consultation ran until December 19 on the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) and Joint

Transport Study, which have been drawn up by the four former Avon authorities – Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset – to plan for future housing and employment demand. Feedback from the consultation on the transport proposals will now be used to draw up recommendations, which will be published for further public consultation later this year. A final JSP is expected to go to the Government for approval in 2018.

How can I help my pet lose weight?

I

t doesn’t have to be difficult to help your pet lose weight. Here are some of our top tips for weight loss: Weigh out your pet’s food – rather than guestimate how many kibbles to put in your dog’s bowl, weigh it instead so you can monitor how much food they’re eating. No more ‘tit-bits’ – Your dinner is for you and your pet shouldn’t be sharing it. Many high fat foods will lead to painful pancreatitis and certain foods can’t even be digested by animals. Tactical treats – if you are going to give treats to your dog, why not use treats that are good for them? There are plenty designed to be low-fat or to help their health in other ways e.g. to clean their teeth. Speak to a member of the team to see which treats we recommend. Regular exercise – A quick walk around the block is better than nothing. Long leisurely walks at the weekend will also be fun for both you and your pet. Use a weight loss food – there are many pet food diets that are proven to help your pet lose weight without them going hungry. Speak to the vet or nurse to find out which foods are most suitable for your pet.

According to recent veterinary research, one in three dogs, one in four cats and one in four rabbits in the UK are overweight. Much like in humans, obesity in pets can lead to many debilitating health issues such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease, arthritis, high blood pressure and even forms of cancer. If you’re struggling to help your pet lose weight, sign them up to one of our FREE weight clinics with a veterinary nurse. The nurse will be able to tailor a diet and exercise plan to your pet and can schedule regular weigh-ins to monitor their progress. Contact Keynsham Veterinary Centre on 0117 9867700 to find out how we can help your pet lose weight.

Call for ‘new blood’ to run popular hall

Sharp-eyed users of Keynsham High Street will have noticed that the facade of the Fear Hall, near the bottom of Charlton Road, was spruced up before Christmas – and now the group that runs it is looking for ”new blood” to join the team. Built with a bequest from local businessman and councillor John Nelson Fear and opened in 1937, the hall is a popular venue for many local societies and activities. After receiving a grant from community funding made available as a result of the development of the neighbouring Tesco store, the hall has undergone a raft of improvements, upgrading the lounge and adding new changing and meeting rooms upstairs. The latest change has been to the building’s frontage with more improvements planned, and now the hall’s trustees are hoping to recruit some extra help. A spokesperson said: “In order to ensure the future of the hall, the trustees are looking for some new blood to help run it – there is not a great commitment of time involved. In particular, they would like to hear from anyone with a background in building surveying or maintenance, but some administrative help would also be valuable.” Over the years the Fear Hall has been home to many groups, including the Keynsham Gardeners, the Keynsham

The Fear Hall’s facade has been given a lift Photographic Society, the Fear Short Mat Bowls Club and the Old Time Dance Club. Many youngsters have taken their first dance steps in the hall at Keyford Dancing School, one of the main users of the rooms, while the monthly stamp fair attracts many enthusiasts. Current regular bookings at the venue also include ChoirJam and Cloud 9 Modern Jive sessions. The hall is a registered charity managed by a board of trustees and representatives of the regular users of the venue. It is independent, with profits from bookings put back into maintaining and improving the premises. Warning over fishy doorstep bargains There’s something fishy about a number of doorstep sellers offering expensive food to residents across Bath and north east Somerset, say Trading Standards officers. Householders are being warned not to fall for a scam, which has recently seen some people spending up to £200 on what they believed to be fresh, top quality fish after being visited by salespeople. When the residents opened the fish to cook it they discovered the packs were unlabelled and their contents didn’t match what they were sold. Councillor Martin Veal, Cabinet member for community services, said: “We would advise people that the best place to buy fish is from a reputable fishmonger at an established shop or stall. Rogue traders often call on unsuspecting households

to persuade people to buy their goods, but very often they are selling poor quality items with no opportunity for the consumer to ask for a refund or replacement. “It can often be difficult to spot a rogue trader and can sometimes be hard to say no, especially as rogue traders often use high pressure sales tactics and can be very persuasive. We all like the idea of a bargain, but if the deal sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Trust your instincts and never buy from doorstep callers.” Anyone who has been approached by fish sellers in this manner should contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06. Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Parks and Events team has welcomed the completion of a new circular path in Keynsham Memorial Park, which improves access to the outdoor gym equipment next to the Bath Hill East car park.

Temporary barrier along cemetery border Temporary fencing has been put up at Keynsham Cemetery’s boundary on Durley Hill to protect pedestrians following the collapse of a 17-metre section of wall earlier in 2016. Keynsham Town Council funded the emergency barrier

along the pavement, the other side of which is a 40ft drop into the graveyard below. Installing a new dry stone wall is being looked at while work to trees and shrubs is carried out along the border during winter.

Celebrating year’s achievements as new chair takes reins at community centre From Scrabble and crafts to an award-winning planting scheme, Community at 67’s first year as a charity has been hailed a success. The community centre, in the rank of shops in Queens Road, Keynsham, is run entirely by volunteers whose work to support residents and provide a range of activities has been highlighted in its annual report. Alongside regular activities such as Scrabble and maths clubs, an internet café, lunch club, employment project and more, there were also a number of other highlights in 2015/16, says the report, including street art sessions for younger residents, a family fun day attended by more than 100 people and the installation of a potentially life-saving defibrillator at the building. Chosen by the Royal

Volunteers planting up troughs in Queens Road last summer Horticultural Society to receive £500, volunteers teamed up with Keynsham in Bloom and budding gardeners from St Keyna Primary School’s Green Team to brighten up the Queens Road shopping area with flowers, winning an

“Outstanding” rating in the 2016 It’s Your Neighbourhood/Britain in Bloom awards. Looking back over the year, outgoing chair Martin Burton said: “Despite being a relatively small organisation run entirely

by volunteers we achieve a great deal due to the efforts of a large number of willing and enthusiastic volunteers. “Any visitor to Community at 67 would see volunteers caring for each other, sharing skills and wanting to make our community a better place in which to live. “There are very few organisations where people of all ages and backgrounds can meet in a safe and neutral venue such as this and I have been proud to be the chair for the year.” New chair Christina Smith added: “Our community is constantly changing and welcoming new people. It is important that Community at 67 is a continually evolving organisation able to react to the changes and challenges within our community.”

Voice founder named local journalism ‘hero’ One of the founders of the Local Voice Network, of which Keynshamvoice is a member, has been named a “hero” of regional journalism in 2016 after launching three more free monthly titles in the Bristol area during the year. ON THE BEAT

with PC James Evans

P

olicing a rural beat, the work we do can change on a day-by-day basis. The start of December brought with it our first flash flooding of this winter period. Due to a number of fatalities linked to flooding, we have certain areas of concern at this time. All of these need to be accessed and checked to make sure that both residents and members of the public are safe and adhering to the measures that are put in place. Normally these incidents pass without concern – it’s generally only when the tried-andtested preventative measures are ignored that incidents occur. We regularly patrol these areas making sure nothing untoward has or is happening.

Keynsham has a number of flood plains, one of which is the rugby club on Bristol Road. During the flooding, we were alerted to a 4x4 vehicle entering this site and driving around on the pitches through the flood waters. This caused significant damage to a number of the pitches and should you have any information on the vehicle and occupants involved in this I would be grateful if you would make contact. This can be done anonymously through our website. With the powers that we have from the Police Reform Act 2002, we can either officially warn offenders or seize vehicles that are being used in an antisocial manner. With the information available from the DVLA website, we get a number of notifications of untaxed vehicles parked on the public roads. Generally, if a vehicle turns up and parks outside your house you do a bit of snooping and report the findings. While dealing with untaxed vehicles has been taken away from the police, we often find that one offence leads to another and this month, having run checks

on a number of these vehicles, I located six without insurance. All of these were seized, with the owners having to insure them to have them returned. Every vehicle being driven or even parked on the public highway should be insured. It seems at the moment our road systems are working at a maximum capacity with massive delays occurring around Keynsham due to the burst water main on Bath Hill. This was compounded with a serious accident on the A4 Keynsham Bypass where one of the lanes had to be closed and traffic also diverted through Keynsham. These incidents are often unavoidable and the diversions necessary. I would ask you to keep an eye on social media, which is generally the first of the information services to react. We share information through our Avon and Somerset Police Twitter page. Speeding is one of the issues that gets raised regularly in Keynsham. With the introduction of the 20mph limit being a success, we have been working

with the council to monitor speed of vehicles. As always, you get the odd one or two that speed excessively but on the whole our average speeds in Keynsham are inside the limits. I will be knocking on a few doors in the coming weeks and offering words of advice to a couple of persistent offenders with education in mind, but if you persistently speed then we will look to target and prosecute you. The Neighbourhood Police Team have access to mobile speed cameras and can and will use them to locate offenders away from where the normal mobile police cameras operate. Lastly, by the time this goes to print Christmas will have come and gone for another year and the new year will be sparking resolutions with visions of bettering ourselves. From all of us in the Neighbourhood Police Team we hope you had a great festive period. Don’t forget, if you wish to contact us this can be done through the neighbourhood pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website.

Makeover gives garden a new lease of life Residents at a sheltered housing scheme in Keynsham say they are already planning a summer barbecue after their community garden was transformed in a makeover. A disused space at The Labbott has been brought back to life after residents approached housing association Curo to create a garden everyone could enjoy. Curo and contractor Snape Contracting Services Ltd redesigned the site together and have now installed raised planters for low-maintenance gardening and a wheelchairfriendly ramp. Resident Teri Florance said: “An overgrown wilderness has been transformed into this beautiful community garden which all the residents can enjoy. Having a space like this will bring all the community together and means we can really get to know each other – we’re already thinking about our first barbecue! We want to thank the team at Curo and Snape who’ve worked so hard in all weathers to create this wonderful garden for us.” Dave Osborne, regional director of Snape Contracting Services, which provided funding towards the project, added: “Over the last five years, Snape Group has been working closely with Curo across various contracts and, after meeting with the tenants at The Labbotts, decided that the garden was an opportunity to give something back to the community. “The design of the garden was a collaboration of Snape working

n Syria there are no good sides. Aleppo has now fallen to the combined forces of President Assad, Russia and Iran. Assad’s regime is one marked by brutality, murder and intolerance of any descent. Iran and Russia revel in embarrassing the Western powers and Putin seems to have played the politics of the situation more adroitly than Obama. This has led some important commentators to suggest that the United Kingdom ought to have done more to prevent Assad retaking Aleppo and to give succor to the rebels but would this really have been a better outcome? The rebels are not Liberal Democrats who want to establish an Anglo

Saxon constitutional settlement. They are a ragbag of groups, some supported by Saudi Arabia and involving Islamic extremists. One of them, Fateh al Sham, changed its name from the Nursa Front when it announced that it was cutting ties with Al-Qaeda. That it previously had links to one of the world’s most evil terrorist organisations shows that the rebels were not comfortable bedfellows for the West. In my view there are two questions for British policymakers. Most importantly, what course of action will lead to the least suffering in Syria and, secondly, what effect could there be in the UK. A victory by any side is likely to

reduce the killings of combatants and civilians alike, after four years of fighting there may be a greater stability with a clear winner than with continued war. This means accepting Assad with his allies may be the lesser of two evils. In terms of our own interests, there is no such thing as a good Islamic terrorist and as the rebels had such extreme backing from people who want to commit terror acts here then their defeat is welcome. Overall, we have been lucky that Syria did not become a second Iraq. Even if bad people seem to have won the West appeared to be on the side of those who were even worse. www.jacobreesmogg.com

financial challenge ever faced by local government, with a combination of lower government grants and an ageing population resulting in ever-increasing cost pressures on local services. Here in Bath & North East Somerset, this means we need to find £49 million worth of savings by 2019/20 – on top of those already made in the past five years. As a result of robust financial management, and thanks to the hard work of council staff, we are already on course to deliver £12 million of savings this year. However, with a further £37 million worth of savings still needed over the next three years, the scale of this challenge remains stark. To put this in context, a

January, 2017 one per cent rise in council tax generates less than £800,000 for the council – meaning we could never close this gap through council tax alone without having an unacceptable impact on the living standards of residents. Therefore, if we are to meet this challenge and put the council onto a sound financial footing for the long-term, there will be some tough decisions taken over spending as well as a fundamental re-shaping of the way local services are delivered. This will not be easy. Over the past year we have conducted a root-and-branch review of all council spending – straining every sinew to root out inefficiencies, find innovative new income streams, and ensure the council is as lean as it can be. But with the level of savings required, efficiency savings like these will only get us so far. In order to balance the budget while maintaining vital services, it will require us all to rethink the way in which local services are delivered and adjust our expectations of what the council can afford to do – inevitably this will mean that some services will have to be reduced or delivered

through different means. Yet where there are challenges there will also be opportunities. Many of the changes required are about bringing together different agencies to deliver more integrated and cost-effective services to the public. There will need to be greater partnership working with other public bodies, further integration of health and social care services, and more support for local communities and parishes to take on a greater role in the delivery of front-line services. At the same time, we need to take advantage of the way in which new technology can change the way people interact with public bodies like councils, and continue with plans to colocate important local amenities such as libraries with other public-facing services. On top of this, we must continue to invest in projects that will grow our economy, improve our transport infrastructure and generate an income for the council in the years to come. Here in B&NES we have so far managed to avoid many of the more draconian measures being taken by other councils. Our full

budget plans will be published in the new year, and there will clearly be difficult choices to be made. However, we will continue striving to deliver the best possible services to residents, while ensuring that B&NES is a council that can live within its means. Lives devastated for the sake of a story

Dear Mr Rees-Mogg – to correct a few points in your entertaining column of last month. The need for greater press regulation came about after a prolonged investigation into illegal, widespread phone and email hacking across Fleet Street, notably targeting the voicemail of 13-year-old murder victim Milly Dowler, as well as the bribing of serving police officers. In all, thirty officials, as well as journalists, private investigators, and a Fleet Street editor, have been convicted, many receiving jail terms. Despite editorial codes of

practice, appalling practices still continue: Recently the “Fake Sheikh”, Mazher Mahmood, was convicted of falsifying evidence against Tulisa Contostavlos. There have been numerous suicides of vulnerable people triggered by the publication of salacious stories; the families of crime victims continue to be pursued by reporters; photographs of children continue to be taken, and stories continue to be made up. So, no, Mr Rees-Mogg, it is not those “libidinous luminaries” or their families (for I assume you must also consider them to be fair game) who will benefit from holding newspapers to account; it is ordinary people who suffer most at the hands Continued on next page

From previous page of the press. They are the ones who lack the funds to take on a major newspaper; the ones who find themselves complaining to regulators in the vain hope that they will receive more than a mealy-mouthed apology tucked away in the classified ads. I do hope that anyone reading this letter will initially follow your suggestion to contact Karen Bradley, the Culture Secretary (just Google “Karen Bradley” and “Leveson” then look for the consultation paper). From that point on, I hope they will take the opposite view and ask the Culture Secretary to activate section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 without further delay. This section will enable ordinary people to seek redress in the courts without being financially ruined in the process. The Ship, The London and, on the other side, The Trout and The Three Horseshoes, the latter just a few doors away from The Trout. Interestingly, when I came to live in Keynsham in 1934, there were 14 pubs in Keynsham, three of them – The Railway, The Royal Oak and The Forester – in the short stretch from the parish church to the present day florist, with The Wingrove a few yards away where Vicarage Green now stands and The Pioneer just round the corner! In reply to the letter from Gilbert Ellis about a crossing on the Wellsway, one is sorely needed for people wanting to access the (sadly) rerouted 178. Golfers raise big sum for Big Ted and RUH When Saltford Golf Club captain Matt Baker announced to his fellow golfers that he would be raising funds for a cancer charity close to his heart, they swung into action and helped collect thousands for the cause. Appeal staff and mascot Big Ted were delighted to collect a cheque for £10,000 for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign to fund a pioneering cancer centre at the Bath hospital. Matt chose to support the appeal during his year as captain after his wife Mandy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and was treated at the RUH. She has since been given the all clear. The year was filled with fundraising events both on and off the course, including a Night Golf event in February and an Am-Am tournament in June, which was rained off half-way through and

rescheduled for a competition in September. The clubhouse also hosted a number of social events in aid of the cause, including parties for Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, as well as a Cheltenham Gold Cup Race Day, an Ascot Race Day and a Farewell Dinner Dance. Matt said: “I am so happy to finally be able to present a cheque to The Forever Friends Appeal for £10,000 after all the hard work and fundraising throughout the past 12 months. “I am now looking forward to spending more time on the golf course and wish the new captain John Dardis all the best for the future.” Saltford Golf Club has received a plaque in honour of its fundraising efforts for the appeal, which will also be recognised within the new centre when it is built.

n NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

In it for the long run! Having pledged to make 2017 the year we find a fitness routine that lasts past January, many of us will be pulling on our running shoes. Sam Bell, a member of Fry Club Joggers and run leader for This Mum Runs, looks at how local groups and events can help us to keep up the good work “I want to get fit in 2017” – it’s one of the most common new year’s resolutions and yet often the hardest to keep. Ten years ago it was mine, and I decided to start running. But how do you keep this resolution going and not give up? Kit You don’t need much specialist kit to start running. It’s essential to have some suitable trainers but start out with a basic pair of shoes and then upgrade your

shoes as a reward once you make some progress. Ladies also need a high impact sports bra. Then any loose, comfortable layers of clothing will be fine for a beginner. Courses It is much easier to run if you have the support of a group. This Mum Runs has a beginners ladies’ running group starting in Keynsham this January, which will take you from running for a minute at a time, to running non-stop for 30 minutes in just eight weeks. It builds up so gradually you hardly notice you’re doing it! This programme is perfect for those totally new to running, those who haven’t run for a while or are doing very little other regular exercise. You don’t have to be a mum to join (www. thismumruns.co.uk/#courses ). Try Active has a couch to 5k course in Keynsham open to all starting in February with the aim

For decades Slimming World’s Food Optimising programme has shown members that it’s possible to lose weight without being on a restrictive and faddy diet and to satisfy their appetite with healthy foods without counting, weighing or measuring everything you eat. Instead, slimmers are encouraged fill up on everyday foods – which Slimming World calls “Free Foods” – like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, which are filling yet naturally low in calories. No foods are banned and going hungry is definitely not on the menu. Kelly says: “Most people who embark on new year

diets start to struggle within days or weeks because they follow plans that are too restrictive and leave them feeling hungry or deprived. At Slimming World we’ve been helping people to lose weight for decades so we’ve learned a thing or two about supporting slimmers to achieve their dreams, including how important it is to their success to have a great first week weight loss as well as be able to enjoy normal, everyday food.” She adds: “Many people start off with great intentions in the early weeks of January but quickly lose heart – and focus – without support to help them stay on track. Everyone will be sure of a warm welcome at any of our groups and each week members will pick up new recipes, ideas and get advice to help them make healthy changes and get into a new lifestyle groove.” To find out more about Slimming World’s Extra Easy plan with recipes, tips and support to reach your weight-loss target this year, come along to one of our groups.

NEWS Hello to leader Nick and some other new faces

Time Out has been in a “holding mode” since the last youth leader left and the dedicated part-time youth work team has kept a programme going throughout this period. A new youth team leader, Nick Birt, along with new youth workers Carrie Ford and Clare Battersbee, have now been appointed and the full team is pictured right. We have sadly said goodbye to Amy and are thrilled that Kelly will be coming back in the new year after her maternity leave so we are now looking at a relaunch in January, in consultation with young people.

Tuesdays 7pm to 9.30pm Open Access (50p entrance) Wednesdays 7pm to 9pm Project Night (Free but limited to 15 young people) Thursdays 7pm to 9.30pm Open Access (50p entrance) Open Access nights are “drop-in” times when young people come in for a coffee, chat, play some indoor games and plan activities. These are also the times the youth workers use to build up their relationships with young people, offer support and help with any issues. We also focus on some dedicated activities within these sessions – cooking, filmmaking and music, for example. The Project Night is much more specific and the topics are explored in more depth and are suggested in the Open Access sessions. A particular project may last between four and 12 weeks depending on what the topic is – for example, drug and alcohol awareness, sexual health, healthy eating, the environment, making a film, animal welfare, rights and responsibilities. The first project, starting in January, is Young People’s Sexual Health, which was chosen by young

Youth Strategy

The Youth Strategy (2017 to 2020) is currently being written and will be put to the town council in December. The aim of Keynsham Town Council Youth Service is a co-ordinated provision of services and activities that meet the needs of young people across Keynsham. In collaboration with other Keynsham youth organisations, we aim to develop and deliver a variety of programmes that address the social, cultural and physical needs of Keynsham young people in order to enhance participation, improve outcomes, enable diversity of activity and improve community cohesion. This means working together towards a common goal of all young people having a strong sense of belonging, combined with providing the supportive relationships, strong ambitions, and good opportunities they need to realise their individual potential. The priority age group is focused on 13 to 19 years with a generic boundary of 11 years to 21 years and extending to 25 years for special needs.

issues connected to young people’s sexual health. We are also looking to develop a detached/outreach project on Friday evenings with youth workers out on the streets engaging with young people, and looking at alternative activities, projects and partnerships with other organisations within Keynsham. Within all of these

plans we will be looking to secure external funding to develop a diverse range of services and activities for the young people of Keynsham. For further information about Time Out, please contact Nick Birt on 0117 986 8683 / 07534 071466 or email youthleader@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk

Dawn Mills has run the group, which runs every weekday except Tuesday from 9.30am at Elim Church in Balmoral Road, for 16 years with her “loyal helpers” and support from the church, which has enabled them to keep the price at £1 per family with hot drinks, squash and toast available. She said: “Our aim is to support our families in any way we can. We are very grateful for the grant from Lisa and looking forward to our new home corner.” To purchase the equipment, Councillor O’Brien used

some of her Ward Councillor Initiative fund, a sum given to each Bath and North East Somerset councillor to support one-off projects that benefit the community. She said she was impressed with the relaxed, happy environment during a visit where she met some of the families who attend the sessions. She added: “They remarked that the group was so welcoming and friendly and was a real lifeline for some who had made new friends and felt cared for by the staff and volunteers. I’m really delighted that I have been able to help.”

Cubs carve a totem pole for centenary A Cub Scout from Saltford has helped unveil a towering tribute to the organisation’s centenary. Harley, from the village’s group, and fellow Cub Max from Paulton revealed a hand-carved totem pole at a ceremony at Avon Scouts’ Centenary Wood in Newton St Loe in December. The pair are among Cub Scouts whose winning designs have now been carved into the structure following a county-wide competition. Each of the winners helped transfer their designs onto the pole at a woodcarving workshop, supervised by woodcarver Dan Bendel, and at the County Jamboree in May. n YOUTH & EDUCATION

Youngsters make Secret Santa delivery Residents at a Keynsham care home each had an extra gift under the tree this Christmas thanks to members of a local youth club. Youngsters from Northside Youth Club in Lansdown, Bath, delivered more than 100 individual, personalised gifts to three care homes in the area, including Charlton House in Keynsham. The group were inspired by the Secret Santa initiative run by the Sirona Foundation after hearing about it from their youth leader Jacqui Moxon, who works for Sirona care and health. Each year, Sirona staff are invited to nominate members of the community who they feel would benefit from a gift. Jacqui said: “The young people have really enjoyed getting involved and it has shown them the true spirit of Christmas and helping others.” Foundation trustee Loraine Morgan-Brinkhurst said: “It

Sirona Foundation Trustee Loraine MorganBrinkhurst with staff and residents at Cleeve Court in Bath with young people from Northside Youth Club in Lansdown is wonderful to have this extra contribution from young people supporting the elderly and vulnerable in our community.

She said these gifts were put under the tree at each home and ensured that every resident had something to open on Christmas

morning. She added: “Each present is personal to them as it is an item that they have told staff they really want.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Happy new year and welcome to 2017!

Adult Non Fiction

Essential Oils by Neal’s Yard Remedies l As reviewed by one of our library customers from Midsomer Norton This just published, 250-page book has been added to the library stock and is well worthwhile reading/buying. It is written by experts and, as with most DK publications, beautifully laid out and lavishly illustrated; the layout and illustrations make it easy to read with dozens of facts and/or photographs on each page. It starts with the usual understanding, derivations and use of essential oils and goes through individual oils, base oils and recipes for blends and healing remedies. My only small criticism would be lack of details on whether oils possessed top, middle or base notes and their strength (easily obtainable from the internet if you are online). It doesn’t go deep into the chemistry. Even if I weren't interested in using essential oils I would enjoy owning this just to dip into from time to time. I liked it so much that a few days after borrowing this lovely book I bought it for less than half price from a book club. Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to British Birds l As reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Library Assistant, Keynsham Library The humourist, born in Keynsham,

shows once more that his talent stretches further than on stage or on TV. I was really curious to read this book because usually it’s the kind of book I avoid as it has a soporific effect on me. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it. I will even recommend everyone to have a copy of it, it’s probably going to be one of my reference books. It looks like a notebook, with pages stained with coffee, drawings and observation by Bill Bailey. It’s a real delight to read, I learn a lot and, of course, it’s hilarious. I could not stop laughing and finished it quickly because I could not set it aside. It’s the best way to learn about English birds, now I spend my time looking at the sky wondering which ones I can spot. Bill Bailey should be the next David Attenborough!

Adult Fiction

Belgravia by Julian Fellowes From the acclaimed writer and screenwriter of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes’ latest book transports the reader to 19th century London. However, it begins on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 where people gather for the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball. Many of the handsome young men attending will find themselves on the battlefield the next day. For James Trenchard, chief wine supplier to the Duke of Wellington and his

family, the night will mean changes that will affect them forever. The story then moves forward to 1841 and James Trenchard, his wife Anne and beautiful daughter Sophia move into the fashionable area of Belgravia. For James Trenchard is a self-made man and unabashed social climber. There are clashes with the other, more aristocratic neighbours and James is in possession of a secret from that 1815 ball which has repercussions down the years. This is a delightful read by Julian Fellowes and as you would expect he is excellent on period detail and a great storyteller. In fact, Belgravia was originally published this year as a series of eleven episodes made available by an app – a modern interpretation of the Victorian habit of serialising novels.

Picture Books for Older Readers

There is a section in the children’s area of Keynsham Library that is dedicated to readers who have progressed in their reading but want to read something different from a book. This includes Herge’s Adventures of Tintin but also my absolute favourite – the adventures of Asterix. Asterix the Gaul – R Goscinny & A Uderzo The year is 50 BC and all of Gaul is occupied under the mighty Roman Empire. Well, apart from one small village of indomitable Gauls. The village holds out against the

invaders and in this book you are introduced to the famous Asterix, his very good friend Obelix and the cunning druid Getafix. Join them in their village squabbles and their adventures running rings round the Roman Legions with only a small bottle of magic potion. This is the first book of the Asterix adventures but there are many more, including: Asterix and the Goths – R Goscinny & A Uderzo In this adventure Asterix, and Obelix escort Getafix to the annual druid conference in the Forest of Carnutes. However, the Goths are lying in wait, ready to ambush and kidnap Getafix – who has been named Druid of the Year. With Goths, Gauls and Romans all at odds it is difficult to tell friend from foe and you can bet that confusion will reign until our two Gaulish heroes can sort it all out and return to the village for a sumptuous feast!

n NEWS IN BRIEF ‘All comers’ invited to join orchestra

A Keynsham music teacher is setting up a new orchestra for musicians of all ages and abilities. Shelley Prior and Pat Dowling, both experienced teachers and facilitators, are launching the All-Comers Orchestra to allow all players of Grade 3 and above to take part. The group will welcome musicians who may not have played for a long time and want to rekindle their skills as well as those who play regularly and would like to join a new group. Shelley said: “We are hoping that this group will grow to give opportunity by performing with musicians of all ages. It will provide fun and social contact and the opportunity to raise funds for chosen charities with concerts. It will be possible to add solos or small ensembles to concerts with piano accompaniment provided and to develop a vocal ensemble alongside the orchestra. The

overall aim is to be as creative as possible!” The From The Top AllComers Orchestra will launch on Thursday, January 5, in St John’s Church Hall, Midsomer Norton. Rehearsals will run from 7.45pm to 9.15pm and the first session is free. The group will meet every Thursday during school term time. For details, email performfromthetop@ gmail.com

n NEWS Lifeline for families wins vital £373,000

Volunteers who work with struggling families across the area started the celebrations early last month, when they received a grant of almost £400,000. Home-Start Bristol provides a befriending service for disadvantaged families with

young children, with volunteers, who are also parents, making regular visits to their homes. Now, as the service approaches its 30th anniversary in 2017, a grant of £373,000 from the Big Lottery means it can continue its work over the next five years. Scheme manager Beverley Symonds said: “We are delighted to receive this generous funding

from the Big Lottery – the second grant in a row for our service in Bristol. “We have worked so hard to achieve our goals, working with families in real need of help. “This gives us the security to plan even more support for disadvantaged local families and children.” In the past year, Home-Start

has worked with more than 130 families with at least one child under five, providing practical help and emotional support. The charity needs around 85 to 90 volunteers at any one time. To find out more about the charity, make a donation or become a Home-Start Bristol volunteer, visit the website www. homestartbristol.org.uk or phone 0117 950 1170.

Rogue trader told to pay back £25,000 after prosecution over building jobs A rogue trader who conned two neighbours in Keynsham out of £40,000 for building work has been ordered to pay back almost £25,000. William Macguire from Coventry pleaded guilty at Bath Magistrates’ Court to three offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Act 2008 on September 9. Two of these offences were for not acting with professional diligence and one for aggressive practices. The case was brought to court by B&NES Council Trading Standards team in relation to two building jobs undertaken by Macguire in November and December 2014 when two Keynsham residents employed him to upgrade their static homes, paying out £25,500 and £14,000 for the work. Macguire

repeatedly made demands for money from one of the victims and the costs kept rising, the court heard. Maguire drove to Warrington to demand £14,000 from one of the victims while she was dealing with her late father’s affairs. The victim paid the money as she wanted the work done but never saw Maguire again. The window work for one of the victims was found to have large gaps around the edge filled with multiple layers of sealant and the windows were not watertight. Kitchen cupboards were also fitted in a bedroom instead of bedroom units and carpets were fitted on bare boards despite the homeowner providing underlay. Electrical work was considered to be unsafe and broken pipework caused a flood in one of the homes.

Wanted for cash, Vinyl Records, Collections & Music Memorabilia for a new independent Record store NOW OPEN in Keynsham

The case was referred to Bristol Crown Court for sentencing and on November 21 Maguire was given a community order of 300 hours’ unpaid work to be done in 12 months. He was also ordered to repay just under £25,000 to the victims within three months or be sent to prison for 12 months. Costs of £9,960 were awarded to Bath & North East Somerset Council and must be paid within six months. Councillor Martin Veal, B&NES Council’s Cabinet member for community services, said: “This is a good result as it is very unusual for victims to be repaid some of the money that they have lost. The Bath & North East Somerset Council Trading Standards Team runs an approved trader scheme called ‘Buy with Confidence’ where residents can search for local

businesses which have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards. We would always encourage anyone looking for a local business to carry out some work for them to visit www. buywithconfidence.gov.uk “Anyone who thinks they might have fallen victim to a rogue trader should report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for investigation on 0345 40 40 506.” The Buy with Confidence directory is available free of charge to callers to B&NES Council’s One Stop Shop in Lewis House, Manvers Street, Bath; The Hollies, Midsomer Norton and the Civic Centre in Keynsham. It is also available online at www.bathnes.gov.uk/ services/trading-standards/buyconfidence or by calling 01225 3966759.

A Year Ends To Begin With caution does the year draw to a close Most weary are its customs, severely drained Grateful of the evils it refrained Standing fast against its foes And as it reaches its final end

It drags its feet, fatigued, up to the line Away from random traumas, a sign As straddlers of society ascend Another year tainted by a foolish belief We worry for the future, what it

Sharing ideas on support for Parkinson’s Keynsham’s new Parkinson’s UK group held its second meeting on November 29 at the Talbot Inn, writes our correspondent, where a good attendance made for a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We looked at ways in which those of us with Parkinson’s had been helped, and a list was made as members had the chance to share ideas. We discovered a variety of factors, from having specialist nurses to give support, to having the right gadget to help us in and out of bed, the importance of

an understanding social group for friendship, to gratitude for having someone to pick us up if we have had a fall, among other examples. We may well continue along these lines at future meetings, to share with others, enjoy a coffee or tea and possibly stay on for lunch and generally find the outing of benefit. Our next meeting is at 10am on Tuesday, January 31. All are welcome as we need ideas, action and support in many ways. Contact Hazel Mitchell on 0117 336 0476.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The Story of H J Packer & Co – Chocolate Makers

At December’s meeting, society members heard Bristol historian John Penny describe the sometimes complex history of chocolate makers H J Packer & Co. From a family business started in 1881 by a former employee of Fry’s, the company grew steadily until by 1914 it was employing 3,000 people at its factories in Greenbank and Shortwood, near Mangotsfield, to where production of Carson’s chocolates had been transferred from Glasgow. A huge range of chocolates, caramels, candies and other sweets were produced at both sites over the years. Originally, Packer’s products were aimed at the cheaper end of the market but this changed with the development of the Bond subsidiary and the acquisition of Carson’s. By the 1950s the company was struggling to remain competitive and the Shortwood site was sold in 1961. Three years later, Packer’s was bought by James Goldsmith to become part of his Cavenham Foods group. Greenbank was updated and became the leading manufacturer of chocolate liqueurs. Elizabeth Shaw was acquired in 1968 and, along with with Famous Names, became the main brand produced. A series of management buyouts and takeovers through the 80s and 90s kept the business going. In 1988 it was renamed Elizabeth Shaw and survived until Greenbank closed in 2006, leaving only the name, now attached to imported products, as a reminder of what was once the country’s fourth largest chocolate maker. John’s presentation was

The Carson’s Factory at Shortwood enlivened by a range of pictures of both products and the factories and some entertaining clips of old television adverts for Chewits and other children’s favourites.

Keynsham Roman Villa

The original archaeological excavations at Keynsham Cemetery in 1922-24 led to the discovery of what was generally believed to have been one of the largest and grandest Roman villas in Britain, although recent work indicates that it may not have been a villa at all. The excavations were led by Arthur Bulleid and Dom Ethelbert Horne, who was a Benedictine monk at Downside Abbey. In one of those chance discoveries that make history and archaeology research a never-ending story, the current archivist at Downside

Photo: A Short History of the Greenbank Chocolate Factory by John Penny

recently discovered a wooden box in a long-forgotten roof-space there. Inside the box he found a collection of glass negatives taken by Dom Ethelbert, who was a keen photographer among his many interests, and these included some pictures of the work at Keynsham, showing the mosaics in situ after they had been newly exposed. Although the images have not been published, and of course the best mosaics are now on display at the library, they are available to researchers and help us to understand the work that was done.

Portishead Light Railway. This was one of those quirky local railways that never became part of any of the big railway companies and spent most of its life struggling to survive. It’s sure to be an interesting evening for transport enthusiasts. The talk will be on Monday, January 16, at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome. For details of the society’s full talks programme visit www.keysalthist. org.uk

‘Surgery is more effective for diabetes than lifestyle changes’

A

pproximately three million people in the UK have type 2 diabetes. More than one hundred thousand people are diagnosed with the condition each year and it is likely another million patients have yet to be discovered. Spire Bristol Hospital is now offering surgery as a treatment option for the condition. Its newly appointed Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Alan Osborne, is keen to emphasise that surgery is the most effective treatment for type 2 diabetes when combined with optimal diabetes care. Mr Osborne, who was appointed as the first Hunterian Professor in diabetic surgery in 2012 by the Royal College of Surgeons and now practices at the South West’s largest private facility says: “I have been treating patients with type 2 diabetes through the NHS for years, but the rise in demand for weight loss surgery as a treatment for those diagnosed has seen me open up a private clinic here at Spire Bristol Hospital.” Spire Healthcare has been helping more and more men and women throughout the UK through surgery, transforming the lives of over 2,000 patients every year. Diabetic surgery involves either a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, which are all carried

out within Bristol, with no need to travel any further. “Studies show that patients with type 2 diabetes who undergo weight loss surgery will have better blood glucose control than those treated with conventional diabetes management," continues Mr Osborne. This has led to weight loss surgery being commonly referred to as Metabolic Surgery (Diabetic Surgery). The criteria for this surgery is different to those seeking the common weight loss treatment and patients with type 2 diabetes, a BMI of at least 30kg/m2 and with risk factors for development of complications are suggested to go ahead with surgery. The operations were originally designed as restrictive or malabsorptive procedures but are now understood to alter the signalling mechanisms controlling appetite, satiety and glycaemic control. By tailoring their service specifically to the needs of the patient, the consultants working at Spire Bristol offer the best possible chance of success within a safe and clean private hospital. The hospital is now providing cost free weight loss patient information evenings. If you are seeking weight loss surgery advice or wanted to discuss treatment options for type 2 diabetes then

Kensington Arms L-R owner Guy Newell, manager Ali Yuill, owner Josh Eggleton, head chef Luke Hawkins

these monthly events are perfect for you. Heidi Stone, one of the hospital’s Patient Treatment Advisors, says: “Patients aren’t always aware of the treatment options available to them and our

weight loss consultants, like Mr Osborne, can provide essential insights to a patient and really give you quality advice moving forward with surgery.” Within the past month Spire Bristol Hospital held three separate patient information evenings, where individuals have booked a private one-to-one miniconsultation with a practicing weight loss consultant at the hospital. Mr Osborne concludes: “I have already hosted a weight loss event here at Spire Bristol and I strongly believe that if the patient is serious about surgery then they can gain some invaluable information with regards to the options available to them. I am happy to give them my time at these events and enjoy helping those who need it.” The hospital has extended its offer of free weight loss information evenings by announcing more dates. To book onto an event, call their patient treatment advisors on 0117 980 4080 or email us at info@ spirebristol.com

ho can have failed to be amazed by the BBC series Planet Earth II on our televisions recently, writes Kathy Farrell, treasurer of Avon Wildlife Trust’s Keynsham Group. The stunning images of the Earth’s wildlife captured by such talented film crews blew us away – remember the sequence in which the marine iguana escaped from the racer snakes and the amazing snow leopard footage? Which was your favourite clip? But Sir David Attenborough brought it all into perspective in the last episode when he said: “It is our responsibility to do everything in our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us but for all life on Earth.” The recent State of Nature report by a coalition of wildlife charities makes distressing reading for wildlife lovers, with one in ten UK species threatened with extinction and 56 per cent in decline. But the likes of Avon Wildlife Trust, along with other Wildlife Trusts and organisations,

He said: “There are many inspiring examples of conservation action that are helping to turn the tide. From pioneering science that has revealed for the first time the

reasons why nature is changing in the UK, to conservation work – such as the reintroduction of the large blue butterfly in Gloucestershire and Somerset, the re-introduction of the crane after a 400-year absence, and creation of wildlife-rich wetlands on former peat workings in the Somerset Levels, where bitterns are once again thriving – and the restoration of areas of our uplands, meadows and coastal habitats. But more is needed to put nature back where it belongs.” Avon Wildlife Trust is working to: Protect the best places – protected sites for wildlife now cover 10 per cent of the UK but fall short of the global target of 17 per cent of land and 10 per cent of marine areas under protection Improve habitats – management of habitats is now backed by scientific research

GARDENING TIPS In the garden

It is not a very exciting time in the garden but if you have a shed it is quite pleasant checking and servicing tools and equipment. With an oily rag, wipe all the shears, cutters, spades, forks, etc. and leave a film of oil on them. Get all the rubbish out of the mower crevices and make sure it is lubricated. Check handles of rakes, brushes, etc and be sure there are no splinters. I usually take a piece of fine sandpaper and just rub them down to be sure. Replace any that are cracked or splintered so they are ready for spring. Cast an eye over all the borders and clear up any old dead foliage, cutting back dead leaves from the taller plants like montbretia, and leave the soil clean. If you have a greenhouse give it a good clear-out and clean the windows. Check windows and doors – there is nothing worse than to find that the door has been flapping open in the latest gale! Now you have done all this it is time for a well-earned cup of tea and a read of the seed catalogues!

D

ecember brought a varied sample of weather. A cold spell followed by a wet one. Not the weather to encourage anyone into the garden but, taking myself for a walk around the garden, I discovered many signs of new life. I discovered some tips of daffodils showing in the right place, tiny spearheads of snowdrops clumped together and one yellow flower on the jasmine. The jasmine had been cut back very hard in the autumn and has not recovered to its full bloom. I also spotted very tiny shoots of the hellebore, just clear of the ground, so early in January I shall be cutting away all the leaves and giving them a feed. I will be checking all the plants in pots that are in sheltered places in the garden. The big pots have a layer of bubble wrap around them and smaller pots are tucked under the lower branches of the conifer.

On the plot

T

his is a quiet time for gardeners as there is little to do on the plot due to the weather and ground conditions are too wet. If you have the time and opportunity, continue to clear and dig any remaining areas of your plot. Time invested now will pay dividends next spring as the action of the winter weather will help break up your ground and when it comes to seed sowing later on the soil will be in better condition. On my plot this year the parsnips failed completely as the young shoots were devoured by slugs but I will continue to crop what is available and I have still got leeks and purple sprouting that can be left to see me through the latter part of winter. If the weather is really wet and cold it is best to keep off the plot and stay indoors to sort out your seeds for next year. There are some risks, in particular storage, so they must be kept dry and free from frost but the germination success rate may well reduce with time. For some

45

reason parsnip seeds are the worst and don’t keep longer than a year, but others will so don’t throw them away. I always keep the empty seed packets to remind me of the varieties I have grown so if you were happy with the results you can buy the same again. Success is not all about the seed variety and other factors play a big role so think back to the failures and consider if the weather or soil temperature played a part. Consistent germination has always proved a bit of a mystery, as some years there is success and others total failure for no obvious reason. The “when to sow” timings on the seed packets are a guide but trust to your judgement. For example, if the weather is cold and wet, then delay sowing and surprisingly the crops will catch up. Looking to the month of January, seed sowing of onions and leeks can begin in a heated greenhouse or propagator, especially if you want exhibition size results. Thin out the seedlings later and harden them off in March ready for planting out in April.

Reaching out to busy parents Today’s busy parents have a lot on their plate: nurse, kids’ taxi service, teacher, playmate, the list of child-related commitments and responsibilities is, quite rightly, a long one. Adding to the already congested timetable are the plethora of after-school clubs and activities: swimming, gym, music lessons, Brownies, football, the list is diverse and endless. To further squeeze an already tight schedule, the trend for modern schools to encourage parents to spend valuable family time helping their child through a mountain of homework eats into whatever free time there is left before bedtime. In this vortex of child-centred activity and obligations it’s easy for parents to lose sight of their own goals and aspirations, a need to “park” their own ambitions until the children are older. Of course, there are plenty of options out there but many take place in the evenings, or at weekends when free time is at a premium or non-existent even if

you do have the energy! During this past year at Zenshin Dojo we have been approached by several mums who, after watching their children in our junior classes, have requested a weekday morning karate class. Their argument is a good one, it's cheaper than a gym, more fun than running on your own, intellectually stimulating, and socially engaging. As a result we’ve decided to bite the bullet and start such a class aimed primarily at mums and dads who are only free after the morning school run, but also open to anyone who is available to give it a go. So if your new year resolution includes losing weight, getting fit, doing something for yourself, meeting new people, or learning a new skill, we could be just what you are looking for. Please don’t be put off by the word karate – there are plenty of misconceptions out there which stop good people enjoying this hugely satisfying and rewarding activity.

Shop stocks up for festive jumper sale

The team at a Keynsham charity shop is urging residents not to leave unwanted Christmas gifts or festive jumpers at the back of a cupboard – donate them instead. St Peter’s Hospice says the donated presents will help stock the shelves throughout the coming year while the jumpers will be saved for a “mega sale” in November. Area manager Victoria Canavan said: “The Christmas jumper craze has well and truly taken off in the last few years and there are now so many fantastic designs and options for people wanting to dress festively. “We have noticed that a lot of people only wear their jumper for one year and then buy a new one the following season so we’re looking to take advantage of that and ask for people to donate their unwanted jumpers to us.” All funds raised from the campaign will go towards the running of Bristol’s only adult hospice.

f you have any Christmas book vouchers burning a hole in your pocket you could do a lot worse than to treat yourself to a copy of Life Unstyled, written by interiors stylist Emily Henson. Focusing on real-life homes with piles of books at the bedside, it is the perfectly imperfect antidote to the aspirational, sterile showhome gloss found in so many magazines and social media feeds. Of course, all the photographs are of exceptionally beautiful properties, many converted commercial spaces of desirable proportions, and mostly inhabited by creative individuals with superior taste and an enviable knack for artfully displaying their interesting collections, and invigorating old cabinets and crates with quick and thrifty paint jobs. But don’t let that put you off. The book serves to inspire the reader to fall back in love with their home, despite any unfinished decorating jobs, exposed plaster and distressed paintwork with its images of charmingly casual interiors. Placing emphasis on making

the most of what you already have, Henson shows how to make a virtue of clutter, by making it characterful. It is true after all that real life involves a certain amount of messiness, whether stuck to the fridge, dangling from sockets or piling up by the front door. These refreshingly attainable interior shots are a great resource for the many homeowners that seek to put their house in order near the start of the new year; a reminder to create a home that you love, rather than what you think you should love.

Finnola powers to indoor rowing gold by Ros Anstey A young rower who attends Wellsway School is celebrating success after transferring her skills from the River Avon to the British Rowing Indoor Championships in London. Finnola Stratton from Burnett joined fellow Avon County Rowing Club teammate Jessie King, from Pensford, to tackle two events at the Olympic VeloPark on December 10. The pair, who normally compete as a double scull on water for the club based in Saltford, took part in the Year 9 Girls’ 500m sprint event and four-minute distance event. Finnola, who broke a previous Indoor World Record earlier this year, has been successfully paired on the water with Jessie, who only took up rowing early this year after transitioning from swimming following a shoulder injury. Their successful season on

the water transferred very well to the indoor championships with Finnola scooping gold in both

events and Jessie finishing sixth in the 500m and eighth in the four-minute event.

n SPORT the pitch but we have been trying to turn him into a beast on it. When he is on his game, he takes some stopping. I just think he takes a little winding up sometimes. Against Malmesbury he came on at half time and changed the game for us. With him and Browner, we arguably have the two best strikers in the league and this gives us fantastic firepower. I hope he continues to work hard and keeps banging in the goals as he’s a very important player for us.”

KEYNSHAM TOWN FC News from the Crown Field

The pre-Christmas period saw mixed results for Keynsham Town’s First Team in the Toolstation Western League Division One, with a win, a draw and a defeat.

December started with a scrappy 2-1 home win against Roman Glass St George. The Ks were on top for the first half, with Sam Duggan opening the scoring on 13 minutes and Pat Davison extending the lead just before half-time. However, after the break the visitors pushed Keynsham back and after pulling a goal back, it was the Ks who had to cling on for a narrow victory in the end, although it was one that was deserved over the 90 minutes. After plenty of excellent away performances and several clean sheets this season, it came as a shock to the system when Keynsham visited Chard Town the following Saturday and slipped to a 4-2 defeat. Matt Curnock made his second debut for the Ks following his return from a spell at Oldland Abbotonians and after they fell two goals behind, he finished superbly from the edge of the box in the 55th minute. However, more slack marking gifted two more goals to the hosts before a late Ben Harris consolation goal. All four Chard goals came from set pieces, which gave the Ks management plenty to work on in training. Manager Chris King said: “We bounced back really well after our defeat at Wellington to go on a seven-game unbeaten run and it showed that there is plenty of spirit in the camp. The loss at Chard was frustrating because we played the better stuff that day, it was a case of not dealing with things defensively.” Next up was another tough away day at Corsham Town, with Keynsham gaining a hard-earned point with only their second

Reserves and A Team

Matt Brown in action at a tough away game at Corsham Town draw of the season. The highlight of the first three quarters was a thunderous drive from Ben Harris on five minutes, which cannoned back off the cross bar. The game sparked into life in the last 20 minutes, with Ks sub Sam Duggan the focal point. After the hosts converted a harsh-looking penalty in the 78th minute, Duggan hit the bar from eight yards out and then scored the equaliser from a similar distance on 87 minutes. However, he went from hero to zero three minutes later when he was shown a straight red card for a flailing arm, but Keynsham managed to hold on for a valuable point in their quest for promotion.

Player of the month

The club has also announced its players of the month for October and November. October’s award went to Ben

Harris, of whom Chris King said: “It took us a little while to decide on October’s player of the month. We had a few defeats but also a few crucial away wins to keep us in the top three. It came down to Ben Harris and Nathan Curnock as both players had some good games throughout the month. “Ben just edged it, though, having scored the winning goal on two occasions just when we needed that bit of magic. Firstly, a goal from the half-way line against Radstock and then a last-minute strike against Bishop Sutton on the groundhop weekend. Ben is always one of our star performers and we expect a lot from him. He’s an exciting player to watch and while he can be our match winner we still want to improve him in other areas of his game. His attitude has been spot on this season and we need him to continue to shine as the season progresses.” November saw Pat Davison, who is closing in on 150 First Team starts for the club, win the award. Chris said: “Pat has found it hard to nail down a regular spot this season, but we know what a talent he can be. This month he has come back with a bang, scoring four goals in four league wins. “Pat is a laid-back lad off

The club’s Reserves have continued their excellent form, recording two more victories to move up the Somerset County League Division One East table to fifth place. The good form throughout the club was maintained by the A Team, who won their only game in December in the KitCo Goulding Memorial Cup 4-0 against Park Knowle to progress to the third round in the new year. Club secretary Julian French said: “I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all our club sponsors, both businesses and individuals, for their fantastic support of our club – you know who you are! Indeed we have just secured a deal with a new sponsor, I J McGill Transport, which adds to the ever-growing list of local companies who are pleased to be associated with our community club.” Off the field, the club’s “Forecast 3” prize pot is still rolling up and up, with the jackpot currently standing at £1,036! The next set of games will be on Saturday, January 7, 2017. Tickets only cost £2, with half the proceeds going towards the running costs of the club as a whole and half into the prize fund. If you want a chance to win, please contact Julian French on 07814 609853. Don’t forget that you can follow the club’s fortunes on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@KeynshamTownFC).

n SPORT Bowling captains hand hospice a gift

Each bowling season, the captains of Keynsham Bowling Club nominate a charity for the year, and in 2016 this was the Dorothy House Hospice at Winsley near Bradford-on-Avon, writes our correspondent. A presentation is always made at the club’s Christmas Coffee Morning, and a cheque for £1,200 was handed over by Mo Dickinson and Bob Edge to Yvonne Brunton, hospice community fundraiser. While the Government supports the hospice to the tune of 16 per cent of its costs, the balance of 84 per cent has to be raised locally and Yvonne said: “Without local support we would not be able to offer the care that we provide, and it is always heartwarming when people are so kind and generous.” This donation made by the club was in addition to the £400 recently given to the RICE Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
