The weekend is on its way, the weather is looking good (there, we’ve said it!) and performers from across the West and beyond are heading to Keynsham. This year, the Memorial Park will be hosting a weekend of music and activities, with folk acts, vintage cars, dancing and the traditional Gala Concert by Keynsham Orchestra on Saturday, July 4, before all four stages come to life on the Sunday. Catch Gian Piero Millanetti performing his Keynsham an-

them on the Bandstand, see the best of local talent on the Community Performance Stage, enjoy sets from the likes of Bigtopp, Foreign Affairs and Bohemian Embassy on the Top Stage and rap to rock on the TimeOut Stage. Among the stalls will be the Keynsham Wombles, who will be getting creative, recycling litter into sea creatures, as well as encouraging us all to take responsibility for our rubbish. For the full line-up, see www. keynshammusicfestival.co.uk.

Strategy to keep town on the move is to be unveiled A one-way sytem in the High Street, an overhaul of the busy Hick’s Gate roundabout and a raft of changes at Keynsham’s busiest junctions are all proposals set to be unveiled as part of a plan to tackle congestion in the town over the coming years. Bath and North East Somerset Council leaders are set to reveal a new transport strategy for the town, called Getting Around Keynsham, at the new administration’s first Cabinet meeting on July 8 at 4pm. The document has been drawn up after residents, councillors and community groups had their say on a draft strategy published earlier this year. It looks at all aspects of travel around the town, from walking and cycling to cars, buses and trains, parking and travel plans for those who commute to work in Keynsham. Among the schemes the strategy recommends as a priority for the town are improving the Bath Hill, Wellsway and Bath Road junction with signals; carrying out a trial one-way system in the High Street this year; commissioning a study at Hick’s Gate; carrying out an audit of pedestrian routes in the town centre; improving cycle routes to schools; and working with bus operators to simplify fares. A key target is to reduce the proportion of Keynsham residents driving to work to below 60 per cent by 2021, says the strategy. The document also recommends maintaining the current supply of off-street parking. Councillor Anthony Clarke

(Conservative, Lansdown), Bath and North East Somerset’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Getting around Keynsham easily is fundamental to the successful economy and wellbeing of the town, its residents and employees. We’re keen to improve access to the town centre and its retail and leisure facilities. “Our new administration is committed to reducing traffic congestion in and around Keynsham. We want to ensure the town retains its independence and its separate identity within such an attractive rural setting by becoming a more sustainable, desirable and well-connected place in which to live and work.â€? Overall, the Getting Around Keynsham transport strategy aims to: ď Ź Minimise any future increase in traffic congestion; improving air quality and reducing vehicle carbon emissions ď Ź Support and enable the local economy; widening access to opportunities: jobs, learning, training, leisure and other local facilities; ď Ź Ensure that all traffic management and pedestrian schemes are designed to take mobility needs into account. ď Ź Widen travel choice; working with operators on improving connections, particularly to improved rail services and the town centre. For more details of the Getting Around Keynsham transport plan, visit the council’s website at www.bathnes.gov.uk. The Cabinet meeting on July 8 will also be broadcast live on the website.

Care home trust to take former chocolate factory site into future Work is due to begin in just days on transforming the red-brick buildings of Keynsham’s former chocolate factory into a retirement village and employment space. The Bristol-based St Monica Trust is now at the helm of the £60 million development, which will create a 105-bed care home in the central block and 120 assisted living apartments in Block A, the closest to the Somerdale entrance. Block C, with the iconic Cadbury's sign on its front, will become employment space, while the proposals also include retail outlets and potentially a restaurant, hairdressing salon, leisure suite, pharmacy and GP surgery. It is expected that along with the care home the employment space will offer around 1,000 jobs. Asbestos removal will begin on July 6 and take 10 weeks while demolition inside Block C gets under way in August, soon after which the changes will become noticeable from the outside

From left, Luke Freeman of MF Freeman, David Williams of the St Monica Trust and Andrew Wilson of Andrew Wilson Partnership at the handover of the former chocolate factory at Somerdale when the Cadbury’s sign is taken down. The development work is being undertaken by Andrew Wilson Partnership. An official handover by MF Freeman, which oversaw the planning process, to the St Monica Trust was held on June 12 and joint managing director Luke Freeman said he was pleased to have secured the landmark buildings’ future. He added: "Our

relationship with the St Monica Trust is based upon sharing our vision of delivering a high quality mixed-use scheme, which preserves more of the original buildings and maintains the integrity of the heritage of this iconic site.” The Somerdale project will be the fifth retirement village developed by the St Monica Trust, a charity set up by Henry and

Monica Wills in 1925 to provide care and service for older people. There are links between the histories of the Somerdale site and the trust, as there was contact between the philanthropic Fry and Wills families and, said chief executive of the St Monica Trust, David Williams, a number of former employees now live at the trust’s retirement villages. He said: “Maintaining the heritage and rich history of such iconic buildings is very important to the trust. Our founding Cote Lane site is a Grade II-listed building and our most recent development at Sandford Station retained all of the site’s original railway buildings, which means we have a strong track record in that respect.” People will be able to take their first look inside the transformed buildings early next year when a show flat and offices open at Easter and all work is due for completion by the following Easter, in 2017.

Trees blocking view of camera get the chop Trees at the side of the A4 in Saltford have been cut back after complaints that they were blocking the view of a speed camera. But not before 2,929 motorists were snapped travelling at more than 30mph on the stretch since the unit was switched back on nearly five months ago. Among them was 92-year-old Maurice Cross, from Keynsham, who drove to Bath for a day out on June 6 and later received a penalty notice after he was caught travelling at 38mph past the camera. Mr Cross said: “I don’t often use that route and having not seen the camera I assumed they had taken it down. I fell into the trap of keeping up with the car in front and assume we were both caught. “I have spoken to the police but they said there were no grounds for appeal so I suppose I shall have to pay the fine as I

can’t attend the speed awareness course because I am my wife’s carer.” Guidelines issued by the Department for Transport to camera operators recommends a “high-visibility approach” but adds that non-compliance with the advice “does not provide any mitigation of, or defence for, an alleged offence committed under current UK law”. The camera was switched back on on February 11 and is operated by Avon and Somerset Police, who issue penalty notices to those caught speeding. The trees are on Network Rail property and were cut back by Bath & North East Somerset Council in June. A council spokesman said: “There is a speed camera warning sign and the camera is within a clearly-marked 30mph area; there are also clear markings on the road next to it. Maintenance

Maurice Cross with his speeding fine and, below, the A4 before the trees overhanging the camera were cut back of the trees is the responsibility of the landowner Network Rail. As a gesture of goodwill, the council offered to cut back the trees on this occasion, ahead of Network Rail’s planned maintenance programme.” When concerns were first raised about the view of the camera, Supt Richard Corrigan, road safety lead, said the police had been made aware of the growth of the trees and had contacted the local authority. He said: “This is not a reason to stop enforcing the law by people who are exceeding the

speed limit and this stance is supported by current guidance. It must be remembered that this is a residential area governed by a 30mph speed limit and is next to a central reservation for pedestrians crossing.”

Calls to tackle trouble in park Proposals to install lights at Keynsham’s skate park have prompted residents and park users to raise concerns about the levels of antisocial behaviour in the area after dark. One resident said the town’s Memorial Park has something of a “Jekyll and Hyde character, with families playing happily in the day while at night it becomes “more sinister. Littering, arson, drug-taking and noise all occur in the evening hours, residents have said, and fears have been raised that installing lighting could make the site even more of a hotspot for antisocial behaviour. “I’m concerned it would be adding more honey to the honeypot, said one resident. Keynsham Town Council agreed in February to begin drawing up a planning application for lighting and to get formal quotes. A petition calling for the lights to improve safety at the skate park after dark was presented to the council in 2012

by young members of TimeOut youth drop-in service. Funding is likely to come from ÂŁ36,000 of Section 106 funding handed over by developer Taylor Wimpey for youth services as part of the planning agreement for its K2 site. Residents said they are hoping that the town council will work constructively with them on the issues, suggesting CCTV is installed around the site and that there is more supervision of the park in the evening hours. One resident said: “I would have no objection to lighting at the skate park on a trial basis but only if these existing issues are tackled to a reasonable level first.â€? Recent complaints about littering at the site raised with the town council by several park users and residents prompted members of the youth council Keynsham Now to team up with volunteers from Keynsham Wombles and the NeighbourHoodies for a litter pick.

Historic bridge gets vital repair work The start of work to protect a 17th-century bridge in Keynsham from falling into disrepair has been welcomed. Repairs to Steel Mills bridge, which runs over the River Chew from Dapp’s Hill, got under way in the last couple of weeks, with work to be carried out on arch rings, spandrel walls and cut waters. The stone bridge is not used by a large number of motorists but is a busy pedestrian route, particularly with Wellsway School pupils. Councillor Alan Hale said

efforts to get repairs carried out began more than a year ago when the bridge appeared on an English Heritage list of structures “under threat. After council officers agreed work should be done, there were further delays with a bat survey and the onset of winter, said Mr Hale. “I am delighted that persistence has paid off, and that part of the town’s heritage and history will be given a new lease of life, while at the same time a safe journey to school for local children is maintained, he said.

Village a good fit for Little Coffee Shop

Do I really need pet insurance? Pet insurance is there to give you the reassurance that if your pet becomes ill or injured, they will be able to have all the treatment they require without you having to worry about the cost. There is no NHS for pets and, depending on the illness, veterinary treatment and care can become very expensive, especially if your pet develops an on-going condition. In fact, according to a recent report by the Telegraph. co.uk, the average single pet insurance claim now costs more than £600, with pet insurers paying out £1.3m in claims every day. The cost of your pet insurance premium is determined by several factors such as age, medical history and even the area in which you live. Yet one of the key things to consider is simply the breed of your pet. Different breeds often come with different health risks, which can impact your cover. For example, rottweilers are one of the most expensive dogs to insure based on their breed's history of medical complaints, and labradors often need surgical treatment for torn cranial cruciate ligaments, which can

cost thousands to repair. When taking out a policy, find out how long illnesses are covered for. We always recommend lifelong cover just in case your pet is diagnosed with a condition that will affect them for many years (e.g. diabetes or skin conditions). Also, don’t underestimate the importance of the policy limit. We would generally recommend a policy of at least £4,000 for cats and £7,000 for dogs so that you will have plenty of cover if the worst were to happen. Pet insurance is as much about peace of mind as it is about money. You may pay insurance premiums for years and never make a claim. However, could you afford a huge vet’s bill if your pet became ill or had an accident without it?

A new cafe has opened its doors to the public in Saltford, bringing an empty building back to life. The Little Coffee Shop, in Manor Road, is a stone’s throw from Bath Road and welcomed its first customers on Saturday, June 13. Owner Sally Turner and manager Jack Richards, who was formerly a manager at Keynsham’s Bonzo Lounge, plan to open the cafe between 8am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday, offering

sandwiches, cakes, Clifton Coffee, Exquisite Canton Teas and more. The former public toilet block next to the village’s memorial garden has been transformed into a bright space with a large floor-to-ceiling window opening onto a patio area and Jack said the team were delighted with the premises. The cafe’s launch coincided with the start of Saltford Festival – turn to Page 29 for photos from some of the events.

Competition

Would you like to unveil clock? One lucky child from Keynsham will get the chance to play an imporant part in the town’s history when the new clock tower is unveiled this September. Here, the arts advisory group explains more about the competition and how you can enter. Would you like to help unveil our new clock tower? The construction of the stunning new clock tower for Keynsham has now begun. Dozens of images which refer to memories of our town past and present have been woven into the design, very much driven by the involvement of local residents of all ages. It is to be unveiled in Market Walk at noon on Saturday, September 19.

Since so many have contributed to Sebastien Boyesen’s work, the Keynsham Arts Advisory Group committee has decided to invite a senior citizen and a primary school child to perform the official unveiling. As a consequence, a “lucky draw” competition will be held, open to all young people who attend Keynsham primary schools and live in the town. They must expect to stand in front of a crowd and help “pull the string”, although they won’t be asked to make a speech! Please complete the application form, right, and hand it into Keynsham Town Council’s office by 4pm on July 17, 2015. The lucky winner (and runner-up reserve) will be announced in August’s edition of Keynshamvoice and in the window of the town council office.

PCC visits police centre to see new service for crime victims in action Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens has paid a visit to Keynsham to see a newly launched victim support service in action. The Avon and Somerset PCC was welcomed to Keynsham Police Centre by a team from Lighthouse Victim and Witness Care, which was set up as part of a drive launched by Ms Mountstevens to improve support for those affected by crime, from their first contact with police and on to the end of the criminal justice process. The visit on June 23 was the first by the PCC since the service and others across the Avon and Somerset force area launched on April 1. She also met members of the Victim Support team and the North East Restorative Justice coordinator, who are based at the Ashmead Road centre alongside the Lighthouse hub, and was given a tour to show how being under the same roof works for each of the services.

PCC Sue Mountstevens, third from right, meets Lighthouse team members at Keynsham Police Centre Many of those receiving help from Victim Support, which has received £296,973 to deliver an emotional support service, have been referred by Lighthouse. Part of the reform of victim care in Avon and Somerset includes the development of restorative justice, which gives the victim the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the person responsible to help them move

on by talking about the experience. Avon and Somerset Restorative Justice development manager Helen Rosenthal said: “Through the development of restorative justice services in Avon and Somerset we strive to put the victim at the heart of what we do. A multi-agency restorative justice service will give victims a voice and access to support.”

PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “We’ve started from scratch to review what’s right for our communities in 2015 and come up with a fresh approach, rather than simply continuing with what already existed. I am excited about the services and am confident they will help those people who unfortunately experience crime and anti-social behaviour.”

Home care for independent living Sometimes a little extra help is all we need to remain living independently at home and in the local community, it’s where we want to be after all.

‘Yarn bombing’ to welcome judges Floral displays will be taking centre stage this month as judges from South West in Bloom visit to assess Keynsham’s entry. The town has once again en-

tered the Portman Cup category alongside other communities across the region, including Truro, Calne, Devizes and Tiverton. A rainbow of knitted flowers will greet judges when they arrive on July 10, thanks to a “yarn bombing” project organised by Keynsham In Bloom in which

Follow us on Twitter @keynshamvoice woolly blooms created by volunteers will be attached to the railings on Bath Hill near the Memorial Park gates. The visitors will be taken on a tour of the town, stopping at public areas such as the park and Keynsham Station and parts of the community where residents

9

have been busy planting to get their area looking its best. Last year, Keynsham was awarded Silver Gilt. Judging for the Keynsham in Bloom competition, which includes schools, businesses, homes and community groups, takes place from July 16 to 24.

Councillors reject call to replace chair with mayor for Keynsham A call to create a mayor for Keynsham has been rejected by town councillors. The issue split opinion on the town council, with some members calling for a working party to look into the issue, others saying it should first be put to the public to decide and others opposing the idea completely. The discussion on June 23 at a town council meeting followed a proposal from Labour councillor David Biddleston, who said he felt having a mayor rather than a council chair could raise the profile of the growing town among residents and with other

local authorities. Following the debate, he said: “I had hoped that a mayor for Keynsham might have raised the profile of the town significantly and had written to other local town council mayors to ask if they felt that the role had benefited their community. Without exception, their responses were very positive. “I asked the town council, therefore, if they might agree to the idea in principle before we put together a group to discuss how it might best operate and consult with the community on whether they were interested in having a mayor. In the end, quite

narrowly, the council were not in favour and a motion was made not to continue with the project." The cost of purchasing a mayoral chain, in the region of £2,500, was among concerns, although Mr Biddleston pointed out it was not necessary for a mayor to have one. Other bones of contention were the increased expense and time pressure of appearing at more functions. Conservative councillor Brian Simmons said he felt the proposal was a “waste of time” and added: “The has never been a mayor in Keynsham – it has always been chair, not mayor. Would we end up with a horse

and cart, a mace-bearer, frock coats and pantaloons? It looks nice, but does it do anything to benefit Keynsham?” A motion to take no further action on looking into the issue was passed. Mr Biddleston said: “Naturally, although I respect the views of my fellow councillors, I was disappointed. I had felt that a mayor for Keynsham might have encouraged the community to engage greater with local democracy and for residents to have an immediately identifiable representative which could serve the town well at business and other functions.”

No urgency to rid us of bottleneck B&NES officers and councillors should hang their heads in shame at the disruption and chaos they are causing to residents, commuters and traders in Keynsham with the ongoing pavement alterations at the corner with Rock Road. With previous experience as to the consequence of three-way traffic lights in Temple Street causing gridlock and radio traffic reports warning drivers not to travel to Keynsham they embark on a programme that does not appear to have an end. Surely knowing the chaos this would bring they should have had a time-specific contract of, say, two weeks. Instead there appears

to be no urgency to rid our town of this bottleneck. Ian M Keynsham

Where has our wyvern gone?

I am trying to find the whereabouts of the statue of the wyvern that used to sit on the roof of the library in Keynsham. My understanding is that it was removed and stored in the basement of the old Town Hall and should have come to light when the building was demolished. The wyvern, a legendary winged creature with a dragon’s head and wings, is very similar to a dragon but only has two legs. I am also curious as to where the large ammonites that were in the wall in Bath Hill now reside. Can anyone with any knowledge please contact me? Gill Hellier

Firms in talks on filling new shops The majority of Keynsham's vacant Market Walk units could soon be filled as talks are being held with a number of businesses. In an update at Keynsham Town Council’s June meeting, B&NES councillor Charles Gerrish (Cons, Keynsham North) said he had been informed that negotiations were taking place on three retail units. New traders would join existing tenants Bonzo Lounge, Sainsbury’s, Gregorys Estate Agents and Pomegranate Cafe Restaurant, which will be moving from Temple Street.

Mr Gerrish said the lowerfloor unit opposite Bonzo Lounge had been taken, while talks were taking place with two local businesses not currently based on the High Street about the two smaller units on the top level. This would leave just one larger unit to fill, around eight months on from the opening of the development. He said the new Bath and North East Somerset Council Conservative administration was “not overly happy with the performance” of property agents DTZ, who are tasked with marketing the new development.

Legion club throws party to mark Joe’s milestone When Joe Wright turned 100 last month, fellow members of Keynsham’s Royal British Legion Club made sure the day didn’t pass without celebration. Family and friends joined Joe at the club, where he has been a member for more than 50 years, to mark his birthday on June 12 with a party. Joe was born in Oldbury, Birmingham, at the heart of the steel industry, in the same year his father was called up to fight in Greece in the First World War. Sadly, he was killed in the conflict when Joe was just two. Just a year later, Joe and his elder sister Doris were orphaned when their mother died from poisoning as she worked as a shell filler at an ammunition factory. He lived with his grandmother in Wales, then with an aunt in Birmingham before his sister died at the age of just 12. At 15, Joe began working with the horses that pulled the barges on the canal in Oldbury and then with steeplejacks, learning to

A keen footballer in his spare time, a prospective career with West Bromwich Albion was cut short by serious injury. As war returned, Joe became a fireman. His work took him all over the country and then to Keynsham in 1947, where he joined the maintenance team at Fry’s chocolate factory, before moving to Vitamelo in the town, where he worked for 25 years until retirement – only to begin work as a part-time gardener until he was 85.

Joe married twice, first to Annie Coll in 1937, and they had four children – Maureen, Patrick, Kathleen and William – before Annie died at the age of 28. In Keynsham, he met Pansy Fisher and they married in 1950 and had two children, David and Andrea, and lived in Selworthy Close and then Sherwood Road. Joe’s party was attended by a number of family members, including son David, daughters Andrea and Kathleen and granddaughters Kelly and Caitlin.

School to unveil a bench for Ben A carved bench dedicated to the memory of Keynsham man Ben Pocock is to be unveiled at his former primary school. A ceremony will be held at St John’s CofE Primary School with members of Ben’s family and Bath & North East Somerset Chairman Councillor Ian Gilchrist this month. Ben, 20, was among the 298 people who died when flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine almost a year ago.

Plans revealed for school crossing Families and residents are due to be consulted on plans to introduce safety measures on Charlton Road outside St Keyna Primary School. One option being looked at by B&NES Council, Keynsham Town Council heard, could be to install a puffin crossing to the east of Cleeve Grove, while another could be to introduce traffic calming measures on Charlton Road leading up to the crossing point.

What a song and dance – summer school for budding performers Why not kick start your summer with an amazing week at the Bristol School of Performing Arts Summer School, the school that does perform. Over the past year, BSPA has produced no fewer than five major productions staged in its in-house Hart Theatre, with at least two more to follow before the July recess. In addition, more than 20 young dancers from the Dance Department appeared in the 2014/15 Hippodrome pantomime Dick Whittington, and a further 65 formed the choir for the recent touring production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Bath Theatre Royal. In addition to this, with the forthcoming appearance of 24 students in Bill Kenwright’s Jesus Christ Superstar at the Bristol Hippodrome in the week commencing July 20, you will understand BSPA’s claim to be

the school that does perform! A performance opportunity of a different kind occurs with the school’s bi-annual involvement with the prestigious Fashion Live at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway. On the exam front, yet another 40-plus children achieved

a level of passes at either high merit or distinction in the recent LAMDA Drama and Musical Theatre exams, representing a 100 per cent pass rate. The school is currently gearing up for its third summer school in which youngsters are

given an opportunity to work for a full week with tutoring from West End performers and choreographers, culminating in a performance on the final day in the school’s Hart Theatre. BSPA also boasts a veritable who’s who among its many patrons – veteran comedian Ken Dodd, actress and family member Vanessa Redgrave, West End producer Bill Kenwright and major pantomime promoter Kevin Wood, responsible for over ten major productions each Christmas, including the one at the Bristol Hippodrome. BSPA, in conjunction with its sister school The Bristol School of Dancing, together form Bristol and the West Country’s oldest and most successful young people’s performing arts academy. Cadets gain new skills that will ‘benefit them throughout life’

From semaphore to navigation, members of Keynsham Detachment Army Cadet Force have been gaining a wealth of new skills from a range of activities in recent weeks. Corporal Jay Thomas, Lance Corporal Alex Grinter and Cadet Joshua Maynard attended Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze and Silver expeditions in the New Forest and the Quantocks. The weather held out on both weekends, which the cadets were grateful for as they navigated themselves around a route, cooked and slept outdoors in self-sufficient teams. Under Officer Kelly Thomas said: “The skills cadets learn

from these events are invaluable and alongside this they achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s award recognised by many employers.” Meanwhile, Under Officer Thomas joined fellow instructor Sergeant Darren Hawkes at a Basic Signals course at the Defence School of Communications and Information Systems, in Blandford Forum. With the knowledge they gained, the instructors can teach cadets how to communicate using semaphore and morse code and to use radio procedures with communication systems used today. Finally, Cadet Company Sergeant Major Phillpotts and Cadet Colour Sergeant Crew

have attended a sports leader course at HMS Raleigh. For this qualification, the two cadets were assessed on their ability to plan and lead sporting sessions, both performing well over the two weekends. AUO Thomas said: “The Army Cadet Force provides young people with a range of skills which they can benefit from throughout life. “If you are aged between 13 (or in Year 8 at school) and 18 and are interested in becoming an Army Cadet, you can pop along and see what we do any Thursday evening at Keynsham TA Centre between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.”

Celebrating a great first year and a bright future for youth theatre by Ros Anstey A youth theatre company launched after the closure of another group for young actors is celebrating its first anniversary. Members of Phoenix KYT, which opened last year after the demise of Keynsham Youth Theatre, have already entertained audiences at a number of appearances in their first year. Highlights have included a “showcase” performance in February in front of an audience of more than 100 people and entertaining members of the Keynsham and District Twinning Assocation and others alongside a visiting choir from twin town Libourne in April. The aim of launching the group was to give local young people experience in all aspects of putting on shows, for which there is strong demand, said company chairman Rachael Abbott. “A year on, it is very clear that there is a real need for youth theatre in Keynsham as

our current cast list of almost 20 reflects,” she said. “Youngsters aged 10-17 are all encouraged to join us, whatever level of talent they have, and at affordable rates, which is so important these days. One member says it has changed her life, as

KYT has received a lot of support from Keynsham Town Council for which they will be forever grateful.” Phoenix offers young people tuition and experience in acting, singing, dancing, backstage work and front of house, led by Jo Meredith, Lee Tesdale, Steve Drew and Tracey English from the Keynsham Light Opera Group. Rehearsals and summer workshops are already under way for the group’s first big show at Easter next year with appearances also planned at Keynsham Music Festival and the town’s Winter Festival. Mrs Abbott said: “If you want to have a go, you can – who knows where it might take you? “If there is a budding Billy Elliott or an Annie out there, pop in and see us on a Tuesday evening between 7pm and 9pm at Broadlands Academy. “Here’s to the future of youth theatre in Keynsham. What a wonderful family to belong to,” she said.

she is so much happier and confident for being part of the whole experience. “Friendships, fun, experience and support for one another, regardless of ability, is evident and is actively encouraged,” she said, adding: “Fortunately, Phoenix

Hello again! I’m writing at the moment on an unseasonably warm evening in Keynsham. The beat team at Keynsham have received a new member of staff on attachment to us – PC Kerry Grace. Kerry comes to us from South Gloucestershire Local Policing Area and brings a wealth of experience to the town. Kerry will be helping the beat team to work with specific vulnerable people in the town and will contribute to the work we are doing on problems you’ve highlighted – particularly around subjects like antisocial behaviour. As the summer warms up, now is a good time for me to mention the need to keep your homes and properties secure. It is very tempting to leave doors and windows open to make the

most of the weather. However, please bear in mind that criminals may see the possibility of gaining access to homes. Make sure you secure your properties if you’re going out, even for a short time. We’re beginning to recommence patrols in Keynsham Community Woodland after receiving reports of damage having been caused there again. Last year we experienced a spate of instances of young people damaging the trees and purpose-built habitats in the

woodland. We also found some small fires. If you have children and you live near the woodland, can I ask you to impress upon them that the woodland is fragile and activities like causing damage, setting fires or burning things and dropping rubbish can have a serious impact on the local flora and fauna. Keynsham Music Festival is fast approaching and I hope the weather holds for it. Having spent some time at the festival last year, I am looking forward to it again this year and hope

that people will be able to enjoy the range of music and other activities which will be on offer. Since my last contribution to the Voice, I have received a query regarding how you can get in touch with the beat team. There are many ways to get hold of us: You can ring 101 and ask to speak to one of us, you can attend the One Stop Shop within the Civic Centre on Market Walk in Keynsham and speak to one of our inquiry officers, you can chat to us when we’re out and about or you can access the constabulary’s website and find us using the “Your Area” section. I’ll look forward to meeting some of you out and about. Please feel free to stop me for a chat should you wish.

New seat at stop for bus passengers A Keynsham resident in her 90s has had her call for a new seat on a town centre bus stop answered. The woman contacted a local councillor after waiting on her feet for an hour for a bus outside St John’s Church on the High Street – because the seat was too high for her to sit down. The new, lower seat has now been installed at the busy stop following discussions between the council and Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale. Mr Hale said: “This seat was set so that people could perch on it but not sit on it, particularly if you are not too tall as my elderly lady constituent is.” He added: “I’m pleased to report that, following continued correspondence between myself and the council, we have now achieved success. “A new, lower seat has now been installed, meaning that at long last people can now sit properly to wait for their bus.”

‘Plan B’ for adventurous pair still on way to Malawi

Street food in Benin and camping in Botswana

Two Keynsham men are still on the road heading for Malawi in east Africa, despite a big change to plans on their epic trip. Mike White and James Ellis left their hometown in March to begin an 18,000-mile road trip across Africa to Cape Town, stopping off to join work at the Malawi-based Joshua Orphan and Community Care charity on the way. The pair, both former 1st Keynsham Scouts, knew their “Key2Africa” challenge would be an adventure with the route likely change as they monitored events in the countries they were due to cross. Once leaving Europe, Mike and James drove through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and into Benin. But news from nations that lay ahead on their journey literally turned the trip on its head, with Mike and James deciding to ship their fullequipped Land Rover from Benin

down to South Africa at the end of May, before heading north to make the trip to Malawi. In a blog on their website, they said: “We had decided to go with our plan B, which was to ship the vehicle from Benin to South Africa instead of driving the whole way. Then we would drive north up to Joshua in Malawi. This was partly to do with safety reasons, as well as some of the borders still being shut – we didn’t want to drive for a couple of weeks only to find we couldn’t cross so would have to re-trace our steps. The next country from Benin would be Nigeria, and only in the last couple of days we have heard of shootings.” Once in South Africa, the two former Wellsway pupils spent time helping with activities at a school in Pretoria before heading out on the road again into Botswana, where they have spotted plenty of wildlife – including elephants which woke them as they camped in their roof tent

Village invites all to join the fun day Organisers of a village fun day are inviting Keynsham residents to come and join them for an afternoon of entertainment. Pensford Memorial Hall grounds will be the venue for activities on Saturday, July 18, from noon. Visitors will be able to spread out their picnic blankets, sit back with a snack, cream tea or a cider and enjoy the show as Frankie Sinatra, Brass Wind and Fire concert band and Bristol Ukulele Jam take to the stage. There will also be dancing from Avon Dance Academy and Shine Dance School. It wouldn’t be a village fete without some traditional games and a bouncy castle and there will also be vintage cars, an animal zone with pony grooming and rides, plant and craft stalls, candy floss and more. All proceeds from the event will go to Pensford Primary School and entry and parking are free. Find all the action at Pensford Memorial Hall in Publow Lane.

Community teams up at event to remember Jack by Rosa Sherwood An event held to celebrate the life of Saltford teenager Jack Boulton has raised £2,400 for charity. Jack’s Day brought family, friends and the wider community together at Saltford Sports Club on Friday, May 29, in memory of the keen young sportsman. The annual event, with football matches and entertainment, is held to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a cause supported by Jack’s loved ones since his death at the age of 17 from an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite morning thunderstorms and heavy showers, the sun was shining and the skies were blue just in time for the activities to begin. Jack’s female friends kicked off the event at 6pm with their own football match. An entertaining game for everyone, the match finished with a 3-1 win to Boulton Wanderers. Their match was followed by a more skilful version of the game

with a local derby taking place between Keynsham Cricket Club and Saltford Football Club. After a competitive battle, Keynsham Cricket Club claimed victory with a 4-2 win. Live music was supplied by the band Robert Paterson & Guests and later in the evening from Axel Boy DJ. During the evening, money

for CRY was raised with a cake sale, T-shirt sale and the muchanticipated raffle and auction. Local businesses showed their support for the event with many donations of prizes to be won on the evening. Auction prizes included signed Arsenal and Man United shirts. Since its formation in 1995, CRY has been working to reduce

Village invites all to its celebration

Jack’s female friends took part in a football match before Keynsham Cricket Club and Saltford Football Club took to the pitch at Jack’s Day Photos: Jekyll Photography the frequency of young sudden cardiac arrest. Unfortunately it’s still a saddening statistic that every week in the UK, at least 12 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions. Over the years, money raised by Jack’s Day has gone towards heart screenings in Keynsham for young people to have their hearts tested for any deficiencies. The Jack Boulton memorial fund has recently funded another free heart screening, which is taking place in July at Wellsway School. More information can be found at www.testmyheart.org.

The whole family is urged to join the fun in Compton Dando on Saturday, July 4, when the community hosts its special village day. Activities will be taking place at the church, parish hall and the Milliennium Green from 2-5pm, including children’s games and a barbecue. There will also be stalls with homemade cakes, teas and coffee, bric-a-brac, arts and crafts made by residents and more. The church tower will also be open to visitors, with its fine views, while in the church hall there will be a selection of locally made crafts and produce, including glass jewellery, crochet and knitted items, hair products, spinning, weaving, braids, patchwork, handmade decorations, plus homemade cakes and strawberries and cream. A ploughman’s lunch is also being served. For information about lastminute availability for displaying and selling your crafts, including edible items, contact Harriette Dottridge on 01761 490445.

Guests at the launch of an exhibition of work by artist Mary Fairclough; below, some of the pieces on show

July, 2015

Glimpse past as An exhibition looking back at the work of Keynsham artist Mary Fairclough has been unveiled at the town's library. Keynsham Civic Society welcomed guests, including members of Keynsham and Saltford History Society, library staff, Councillor Alan Hale, town council representatives and members of the public to the launch on June 16. Paintings and illustrations by Mary, who was born in 1913 and became an active campaigner in her hometown, are now hung on the wall of the library’s first floor, with examples of her books and the smooth painted pebbles she called “Cloughstones” on show in a case on the ground floor. Speaking at the opening, Keynsham Civic Society’s Iris Lerpiniere said the pieces on show were “just the tip of the iceberg” from a prolific artist, who produced sketches, watercolours, linocut, book illustrations and more and who would hold several exhibitions a year at Keynsham's

of Keynsham long exhibition opens A Cloughstone and a small portrait by Mary Fairclough brought to the library by Peter and April Woodward Fear Hall. Miss Lerpiniere recalled how it was a poster by Mary advertising a public meeting on developments in the town that inspired her to get involved in campaigning. “I am proud to say she was a friend, she was a truly remarkable person, she said, adding: “I hope you enjoy the exibition, it brings back memories of Keynsham long past. Among those attending the launch were Keynsham residents April and Peter Woodward, who brought along two of their own much-loved pieces of Mary’s work to add to the exhibition – a

Cloughstone and a pendant featuring a portrait of a man sporting an exotic hat, the feather on which at closer inspection curls into an ammonite. Libraries development manager Julia Burton thanked everyone who had contributed items to the exhibition. She added: “This is the first exhibition at Keynsham Lbrary – we hope it will become a space for community exhibitions going into the future. The Mary Fairclough exhibition is at Keynsham Library until July 11 and is open to the public during library opening hours.

In the Garden The first week of June, according to my diary, gave some fine sunny weather, but with a chilly wind from the north west. So the plants enjoyed some sunshine, but I found it quite cold at times. Nevertheless, the new shoots appeared on all the summer plants, pots began to show new shoots from the early summer planting,

and our French climbing beans survived apart from one seedling. They are now well up the canes and looking healthy. We have had plentiful rain and the grass has grown well with no bare patches, as yet! We had a beautiful display from our wisteria, and a red rhododendron carried some impressive blooms, quite hand-sized. We had some success with tumbling tomatoes last year and we have therefore planted three hanging baskets with the same strain. They look somewhat tender at the moment but no doubt by the time our holiday arrives they will be ready for picking! We have had a spell of quite strong winds and I was pleased that I had staked the taller flowers. The foxgloves gave a splendid display, two new delphiniums have flowers forming

www.keynshamvoice.co.uk and the crocosmia stand in two tidy, well supported groups. I realised I had missed the clump of autumn red asters for staking, so I drove in some bamboo canes and wound some dark green twine around, so they will not slump. What is new in the garden? Two brunneras are growing very well in a shady spot, and now quite large, and we have some tall scabious in one bed. Hopefully the existing Verbena bonariensis will come up alongside them to provide an eye-catching display. We have a standard bay tree in a pot, which we want to form into a ball on the top of the trunk. I

July, 2015

am not too sure how to go about it, so some research is needed. July has its own demands in the garden. Watering, feeding and dead-heading are essential jobs to make sure that flowering continues towards its glorious finale. The earlier perennials are now largely spent so time must be found to dead-head or cut back as necessary to remove brown seed heads and dead foliage. The first flush of roses is over so now give them a feed of fertiliser rich in potash to prompt more blooms. If you have a Wisteria sinensis, now is the time to cut back any trailing leaders not wanted. If we have a hot spell, keep an eye on the lawn, and water it well to stop browning and causing bare patches if you can. If you collect seeds for propagation, now is the time. Dahlias need deadheading as they will stop flowering otherwise. Water them in the morning because evening watering encourages slugs. Did you know never to cut back lupins because it affects next year’s flowering? Neither did I! A lot of work to be done but the results will bring your reward.

On the Plot I suspect that most, if not all, gardeners complain about the weather at some point during the year. This year it’s lack of rain so keep using the watering can. With the surface of the soil being so dry, even a few showers will do little good, so under the current conditions I would water your plot even if there is rain forecast as then the rain will be of more benefit to your plants. Don’t bother watering root crops like carrot or parsnip as their roots will find moisture deep in the soil. I have finished cropping broad beans so have cut them back. There was some blackfly on them so their removal helps to stop these pests

invading other crops like runner beans. I have also dug up the garlic and left it to dry and started cropping courgettes and mangetout. Keep doing this to encourage more crops to follow and even if you are going on holiday, pick the small fruits before you go. The main purpose of the plant is to reproduce, so once fruit has formed it has achieved its objective and may well stop

producing more. Pinch out the lead shoot on your runner or climbing beans once they reach the top of your sticks as this will encourage side shoots and bushier plants, and keep an eye out for black-fly infestation. Healthy plants will cope with a modest infestation so spraying is not always required but don’t let it get out of hand or your crop will suffer. This year I am growing an equal mixture of

27

red and white flowered beans so hopefully this will look attractive as well as giving me a good crop. Stop cropping asparagus now and allow the plants to grow and bush up as this is vital if you want a good crop next year. Early and second early potatoes can be cropped so carefully remove some soil to check on the size of the tubers before digging them up. Left in the soil they will continue to swell so it’s a question of what you prefer – baby salad size or bigger potatoes. Main crop potatoes can be left a fair bit longer until the haulms (the shoots above ground) start to die back. Early July is the best time to transplant leeks into ground already prepared. To achieve long, white-stemmed leeks they have to be planted under the soil surface so use a dibber to make a hole about six inches deep. Drop the leek plant into the hole and fill it with water. Leave this hole unfilled as nature will fill it over time and allow space for the leeks to swell in size.

Vintage year for village Residents of Saltford once again proved community spirit is in plentiful supply as the biennial Saltford Festival returned in June. Over nine days, villagers enjoyed more than 80 events, including fairs, fetes, walks, talks, music and much more, inviting visitors to join the fun. The village’s history inspired many aspects of the festival, from wartime-themed fancy dress at the Old Village Day and Saltford CofE’s school fete, performances from the Farandole Dancers, and a chance to see Saltford’s own ancient Carthaginian coin and find out more about its origins. Organisers are also looking to the future and are urging anyone who would like to help plan Saltford Festival 2017 to get in touch at events@ saltfordhall.co.uk. Spotlight on Saltford

Saltford shows its best side in contest Keen local photographers didn’t have to look far for inspiration in Saltford Festival’s photographic competition. Scenic shots taken around the village and surrounding countryside were submitted by many entrants for judges to assess. Adrian Betts, head judge, said: “This year’s photographs captured the beauty of Saltford brilliantly. The judging panel were impressed by the high number of very accomplished entries. As usual, judging was difficult but after several hours and numerous cups of tea we reached a decision on this year’s worthy winners.” Seventeen-year-old Nikita Johnson was named winner in the under-18 category, with her photo, top left, and Dr Sarah Fox was winner in the 18+ category with her photo looking across countryside towards Kelston Roundhill, below left. The winners’ photographs, plus those by other entrants will feature in Saltford Community Association’s 2016 calendar. Priced at £5.99, it is on sale at various locations in the village or can be obtained by emailing events@saltfordhall. co.uk.

Week of celebrations for centre’s fifth anniversary A community centre in Keynsham is starting the summer holidays with a week-long celebration. Community@67 in Queens Road is hosting events from Monday, July 20, until Saturday, July 25, to mark five years since its launch. The activities have been designed to showcase the activities on offer at the hub, which is run by members of the community inside the former post office. The week will begin with an open evening on Monday, July 20, from 7-9pm hosted by Keynsham Town Community Radio, when visitors will get the chance to see the team in action. On Tuesday, careers will be the focus of events as the centre welcomes representatives from City of Bath College, Curo, the Careers Advisory Service and Job Centre Plus, who will join a team from Clean Slate who specialise in helping people get back into work or start out as self-

employed. From 10am to 4pm, Wednesday, July 21, is Games Day when people of all ages can visit and play games including Jenga, Scrabble, whist, chess, cribbage, Outburst and more. The following day, the centre will be serving up some treats, starting the day at 10am with a Brunch Club for teenagers before offering afternoon tea with cakes, sandwiches and scones and an optional quiz. The internet cafe will be open as usual from 9am-noon on Friday, when visitors can use their own laptops or tablets

or borrow a laptop and talk to volunteers to get advice. The food co-operative will be running from 10am-2pm offering baked potatoes with a range of fillings, with representatives from Somerset Foods Direct, the Foodbank and Transition Keynsham. Saturday will bring the week of celebrations to a close with a day devoted to arts and crafts for all ages, including painting demonstrations, opportunities to try out card-making, enamelling, pottery, life-drawing, facepainting, and many more skills. A spokesperson said: “We are excited to be able to host this community event and we are relying on you, our community, to come along and take part. “Dip into as many of the activities as you like. It’s all free, thanks to our loyal team of volunteers and the support of the various agencies mentioned above. We sincerely hope this will be a week to remember and enjoy.”

Voice for charity in Westminster A charity in Keynsham has been chosen to receive free support from a Westminster-based company to help it raise issues among members of Parliament. Action for ME, which has its head office in Temple Street, has been selected to receive public affairs and communications support from Whitehouse Consultancy. The firm will now work with the charity to raise awareness of the needs of those with ME among parliamentarians. Sonya Chowdhury, chief executive of Action for ME, said: “We are confident that together we can make a real difference in the way that people suffering from ME are treated and really push awareness of the illness up the health and social care agenda.” ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) causes symptoms affecting many body systems, including the nervous and immune systems. Action for ME aims to help sufferers secure the help they need while raising awareness of the condition and supporting work towards finding a cure.

Curo staff get stuck in to help community projects An action day at Keynsham's Tintagel Close was among projects that got a helping hand from Curo staff as part of a volunteering initiative. More than 130 people from the housing provider rolled up their sleeves as part of National Volunteering Week and Bath and North East Community Challenge at the start of June. A Dragon's Den-style competition was held to select the 17 projects across Bath, Bristol, Keynsham and the Somer Valley, which ranged from painting play equipment to litter picking. At Tintagel Close, volunteers joined work to transform the courtyard into a child-friendly space, including painting a race track. At Community@67, in Queens Road, the team also got stuck in to some painting, including a DJ booth at the community centre. Lorraine Woolston, head of neighbourhoods at Curo, said: “Curo colleagues have a great

Simon Gibbs, Curo executive director for finance, right, with Councillor Rob Appleyard, a Curo board member, working in Tintagel Close track record of getting involved with the annual Community Challenge and we’ve had another fantastic response this year. Volunteering is a great way to try something new and learn new skills, while making an immediately visible difference

to our communities and neighbourhoods.” Any Curo residents who have ideas for improving their communal spaces can contact Curo’s resident involvement team on 01225 366000 or visit www. curo-group.co.uk/getinvolved.

Pop-up display is proving popular A pop-up museum in St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando is proving a big hit with visitors to the Sunday afternoon teas, which are being held at the church throughout the summer. One of the organisers, Alison ter Haar, said: “We are exhibiting interesting artefacts belonging to villagers, from times past and present, and from all ages. There is an explanation of what the item is, and a little about its history, together with its significance to the owner. We rotate things week to week and then return to the owner. “You may even like to make a return visit with an item of your own to put on display one afternoon,” she said. Teas are being served in the church every Sunday between 2pm and 5pm, which will continue up to and including Sunday, August 30. Another of the organisers, Jenny Davis, said: “Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy teas, with homemade cakes, in our lovely country church.” All profits go to church funds. RA

Out and about with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group The early morning drizzle had cleared by the time our group – slightly down on our usual 2535 participants – set off from the Memorial Park Café on the afternoon of Saturday, June 13, and headed up Stockwood Vale Road. The five-mile walk then took us up the byway, past the golf course, and on to Queen Charlton in time to visit this famous country fair. Our arrival was announced over the public address system and we had plenty of time to explore what this fete had to offer, including being entertained by our own Keynsham Brass Band and the local Morris Men. There were many side stalls and a display of vintage cars. Having had their fill of the hospitality being offered by the residents, the group headed back across the fields, this

time down Stockwood Vale to Keynsham stopping at the Crown Inn for some welcome refreshment, and where we were made to feel at home. Our next walk is again something different. We are reverting back to our Sunday morning start, meeting at Keynsham Station on Sunday, July 12, at 10.30am to board the 10.52am train to Bristol. Here we will follow the Shaun the Sheep trail around the harbourside, spotting as many Shauns along the way as possible. There will be time at the end for lunch – optional packed lunches are available for £5 (please order in advance) – before we head back to Keynsham on the 14.59 train and to the Memorial Park. This is obviously a family event and children and dogs

(train trained!) are especially welcome. Please, if possible, buy your train tickets in advance. The total walking distance is four or five miles. This is open to anyone. On Sunday, August 9, starting at noon, we are having a fun family teddy bear picnic/ walk in the Memorial Park. There is a short walk after the picnic around the park for all the family and friends aimed especially at the toddlers, who can collect teddy paw-print stamps. Details of these and all our walks and activities are on the Keynsham Walkers are Welcome website e-voice.org.uk/ keynshamwalkersarewelcome. In Good Health with the team at Chandag Road Pharmacy Healthy holidays

Summer is finally here and many of us may be planning some time away, either abroad or closer to home. In either case, it is important to plan well to ensure a happy and healthy trip for the entire family. Before you travel, ensure you have the correct travel insurance to cover the duration and destination of your trip and any activities you may be taking part in. If you are travelling within Europe, make sure you also have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which will entitle you to reduced cost health care. If you are travelling to a more distant destination, check with your local pharmacist or surgery to see if you will require any vaccinations before travelling or anti-malarial medication while you are abroad. You may also require specific insect

repellents or mosquito nets. If you take regular medication, ensure you have enough to cover your entire trip away and a little bit more. You should pack it in your hand luggage in case your bags go missing and ensure it remains in its original container with the labels clearly showing. It is also important to bring along a copy of your prescription to help avoid any problems while travelling or when away. This is particularly important if you are travelling with certain strong painkillers or diabetic equipment. If you

need a new prescription, ensure you request it well in advance of your leaving date. It is also a good idea to prepare a travel kit that includes items that are essential but sometimes forgotten. This can include items such as: ď Ź Suncream and aftersun lotion ď Ź Sunhat and sunglasses ď Ź Anti-diarrhoea pills and rehydration sachets ď Ź Travel sickness medication ď Ź Plasters and blister plasters ď Ź Antiseptic ď Ź Painkillers ď Ź Insect repellent and bite cream ď Ź Antihistamines ď Ź Heartburn medication ď Ź First aid kit if planning on going off the beaten track If travelling by plane, particularly on a long-haul flight, to reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) ensure you get up from your seat

to walk around and stretch your legs whenever you can. Avoid drinking alcohol but drink plenty of fluid to ensure you stay hydrated and wear loose, comfy clothes. If you think you may be at particular risk of developing DVT, please speak to your GP. If you are travelling across several time zones, jet lag may be an issue. This causes tiredness and confusion as your body struggles to get used to a new time zone. In order to minimise the effects of jet lag it is important to establish a new routine as quickly as possible. This means eating and sleeping at the correct times in your destination and avoiding napping. Spending time outdoors in natural light may also minimise the effects of jet lag. Seek advice from your GP or pharmacist before travelling if you take medication at specific times of day.

Thought for the Month with Andrew Judge, Team Vicar at St Francis Church Some of you will be old enough to remember EF Schumacher’s ground-breaking book Small is Beautiful – A study of economics as if people mattered published in the 1970s. An economist by profession, he was a pioneer in a number of related fields including the use of “intermediate technology” and arguing for a sustainable and holistic (human) approach to economic growth compared to a purely materialistic one. He died soon after in 1977. His legacy and ongoing influence has been maintained locally by institutions such as the Schumacher Institute in Bristol. He was a prophetic figure and hopefully one of his most famous quotations may well be coming closer to fulfilment: “I certainly never feel discouraged. I can’t myself raise the winds that might blow us or this ship

into a better world. But I can at least put up the sail so that when the wind comes, I can catch it.” Well “the winds of change” have certainly arrived, maybe “gales” would be a better word – but are the sails up and are they the right kind of sail? These are the challenges we face and like all big challenges they have to be faced on both the local and the national/global level. Here in Keynsham we have a history of community engagement seeking to promote the wellbeing and the future of our community but, swimming against a tide of indifference and denial, this is a tough task and we need all the encouragement we can get. As part of the Keynsham Music Festival this month, Keynsham Action Network (KAN) is bringing

encouragement in the form of the writer and speaker Adam Lent (up till very recently director of research at the RSA), who will be speaking on the topic of his soon-tobe-published book Small is Powerful: Why the era of big business, big government and big culture is over. With the title acknowledging the importance of Schumacher’s influence, Adam will hopefully be offering practical strategies which can be adopted locally for our own purposes. He will be speaking in the Big Tent in the Park on Friday, July 3. Perhaps the most surprising part of the Schumacher quote mentioned above is the first sentence: “I certainly never feel discouraged!” One is tempted to say that he clearly did not anticipate the scale of the problems we face – but it is

worth noting that Schumacher was a man of spiritual faith, which has the capacity to sustain hope even in the most difficult of circumstances. I believe that spiritual faith in the ultimate triumph of good and justice is a great ally in our search for sustainable solutions and the widespread support and delight which greeted the recent publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment and the poor – which has reached far beyond the faith communities themselves – is evidence of a growing willingness to form partnerships across the secular-spiritual divide for the common good of all. This too is happening here in Keynsham Have a good summer and may you be refreshed – there is plenty of work ahead for all of us!

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Celebratory peal

The Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society is 50 years old this summer. To celebrate the anniversary, the tower bell ringers at St John’s Parish Church have kindly offered to ring a quarter peal; this will be on Sunday, July 19, starting shortly after 2pm, so when you hear the bells that day, it will be a reminder of all the society’s achievements over the intervening years.

direction. The walks will feature the Avon Valley, Stockwood Vale, the lower Chew Valley and the Dramway to Willsbridge; preparation and research is under way and it is intended that the guides will be printed early next year, with an online version available.

Stepping back in time

Several 50th anniversary projects are being undertaken by the society. One of these is the production of a series of walking guides to allow local residents to take a family walk, starting in Keynsham, around a route that highlights features of historical interest. Several leaflets are planned, each covering a circular route four to five miles long in a different

Waddesdon Manor

The society’s first coach-trip of the summer was a successful visit to Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire on June 3. Waddesdon was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874 to entertain the

fashionable world and to house his collection of fine art. The Baron wanted a house in the style of the great Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley and the result was a unique and elaborate building. The visit included a guided tour, which gave some insight into the pieces of porcelain, furniture and fine art that the family gradually built up. The Rothschilds were the greatest collectors of the 19th century and Waddesdon is a rare survivor of their magnificent collections. Some of the group also took the opportunity to visit the enormous wine cellars, which are an attraction in themselves. For a contrasting experience, the party called at the attractive Cotswold village of Burford on the way back to enjoy refreshments and a walk around the town. As well as a magnificent parish

church, Burford is remarkable for the way in which the medieval buildings and street plan have survived almost unaltered by Victorian and later redevelopment.

A chance to visit the Imperial War Museum

On Saturday, August 8, the society is running a coach to the Imperial War Museum in London. A major attraction is the gallery on the First World War, which was widely acclaimed when it opened last year. Other current exhibitions include the Holocaust and aspects of the Second World War. The trip is for both members and non-members and the cost for an adult is £24; admission to the museum is free. If you are interested in joining the trip, contact Roger Sirett by email at roger.sirett@ tiscali.co.uk or by phone on 01761 471188.

ď Ź The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club by Helen McGinn You don’t have to be “knackeredâ€? or a parent to enjoy this funny and informative book that both teaches and entertains. I li off identified with the feeling “panic in the wine aisleâ€? and was intrigued by the title. After the first few chapters, I was so impressed that I took the book with me into the wine section of our local supermarket to choose some wine for a “home tastingâ€? (yes, this is a sample of the “homeworkâ€? Helen suggests). Each chapter tackles a subject like “Firesides Redsâ€?, “Store Cupboard SOSâ€? and, my favourite, “Book Club Winesâ€?, a six-week course to run in your book club meetings. Helen explains the basics of different wine production processes and what to look for in each variety. She always includes really useful lists of wine to suit any occasion. This is a down-to-earth book that anchors the enjoyment of a glass of wine firmly in your everyday life. Try it! Reviewed by Amanda Judge, Library Assistant, Keynsham

ď Ź Orfeo by Richard Powers Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014, Richard Powers has created a beautiful story interwoven with a passion for classic music. It begins with seventyyear old composer Peter Els opening his front door to find the police on his doorstep. His

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library amateur science lab and latest experiment has attracted the attention of Homeland Security. His experiment – to extract music from the most surprising of places. Panicked by the raid, Peter flees and awaits evidence to help clear his name. However, an internet-fuelled hysteria breaks out and Peter is labelled “Bioterrorist Bach. This results in Peter embarking on a cross-country visit, one last time before he is caught, to see those people he loves and those who shaped his musical journey. Through their help, Peter finally comes up with a plan that will turn his problem with Homeland Security into a work that will reawaken a whole new audience to the wonderful sounds and symphonies. ď Ź Little Old Mrs Pepperpot and Other Stories by Alf Proysen I once had an old aunty called Hetty and when I was growing up and getting taller she

seemed to shrink with age! So much so that my nickname for her was Mrs Pepperpot. So this book review is dedicated to her. Mrs Pepperpot stories are always full of adventure. She is a gutsy little lady who through magic has developed a habit of shrinking to the size of a pepper pot (hence her name) and growing to her correct size again at inappropriate times! The stories are all funny, with amazing Mrs Pepperpot always the star of the show. The chatter between her and her hapless husband charms both children and adults alike. Mrs Pepperpot is always true to her character, sometimes bossy, always clever and keen for adventure. Oh – I almost forgot she can talk to animals as well when she is small. A trait worthy of any superhero! But Mrs Pepperpot is a gentle heroine and true to form doesn’t let on about her superpowers because “old women don’t usually talk about such things! These classic stories are little gems to be treasured by the tall and short, young and old! Reviewed by Debbie Bellinger, Library Assistant, Keynsham

Picture Books At the library there are a number of board books for our much younger visitors. These board books are a delightful introduction to the world of books. They include Building Site – With Fun Flaps (from Campbell Books) where you can say hello to Tipper Trucks, a very busy forklift and yellow digger. That’s Not My Penguin – Its Tummy Is Too Fuzzy (Usborne

Eveleighs Estate Agents, based in Saltford and Keynsham, are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Shane Smith who will join the Eveleighs team. Since launching Eveleighs just over four years ago, the company has now established itself as one of the leading estate agents in the area, not least due its passionate senior partner, Robin Eveleigh. He said: “Having previously worked for a large estate agency in the area, I just felt it was the right time to introduce a competitively priced, service-focused estate agency, dedicated to residents in Saltford, Keynsham and the surrounding areas, which I’m proud to say is the best thing I ever did because we have successfully sold a high volume of property in a little over four years and the recommendations we continue to receive from satisfied customers are unbelievable. “The demand for our services has seen us expand our team and, true to our values, we only look to recruit local people and I am delighted that Shane has

Fete welcomes familiar faces among the crowds by Ros Anstey A traditional village fete has raised just under £3,500 for St Margaret's Church and the village hall in Queen Charlton. Although the weather was temperamental, the sun came out in time to welcome the crowds. Fete representative John Barnard said: “We are very, very pleased with the result and the tremendous support we received from the local community. We hope the fete was worth their journey.”

We’re all ready for the holidays It’s that time of year when motorists are gearing up to get away for the summer holidays. Here at Motaman in Bedminster we have everything you need to get you on your way safely – and probably a few things you didn’t know you needed. You probably know that different countries in Europe have different requirements for safety precautions. Some require you to carry a fluorescent jacket, for example – but did you know that In France you have to keep it inside the car so that if you break down, or there’s an accident, you can put it on before getting out of the car? Some countries demand that you have a safety jacket for each passenger, so do check. But don’t worry– here at Motaman we know all the rules for different countries and all the gear too to equip you for foreign travel such as:  Single-use breathalysers

 Warning triangles  Headlamp beam adjusters  Sets of spare bulbs  First aid kit Not enough room in your car for all your luggage? Not a problem – we have a huge range of roof bars and roof boxes which add safely to your carrying capacity. If you think you’ll only use your roof box once a year, don’t buy – you can hire from us instead. And if afterwards you decide you’d like to keep it, we’ll knock the hire fee off the purchase price. Of course, driving isn’t the only way to get around. Very popular this summer is our Cambridge ladies’ cycle, currently reduced from £249 to £199. With six speeds, it’s available in yellow, blue, pink, black and red. Motaman 94-96 Bedminster Parade, Bedminster 0117 966 6142

Changing for the better with ith Transition T iti Keynsham K h Every autumn hundreds of fruit trees on private and public land across the UK go unpicked. Sometimes it’s because people just don’t notice they’re there, or they are not physically able to harvest them. Other trees are just so abundant that the owner can’t get through all the fruit. People have been picking and sharing surplus fruit for centuries. It’s a tradition that continues to this day, both in the form of boxes on front walls with “take me” signs, and in official “abundance” projects. Abundance is a growing movement that harvests neglected local fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums and cherries. Volunteers pick the surplus fruit and redistribute it to the community (for free) to community cafes, nurseries, children’s centres and local people. Transition Keynsham’s food group has just started our own abundance project. We’ll be giv-

ing our fruit to a local day care centre, the children’s centre and Community @67. We also hope to host jam and chutney workshops. We’ve been really lucky to win a grant from Keynsham Town Council for apple pressing and picking equipment so the fruit we pick that’s not suitable for eating can be juiced and distributed, too. We will be holding an apple day in October to celebrate the harvest, where everyone can have a go at pressing their own fruit. Longer term, we have plans to make our own community cider, offer pruning workshops and plant native fruit and nut trees around Keynsham. We are currently looking for fruit trees to harvest, and volunteers to help pick them during September and October. Please get in touch with lizbarling@ gmx.com to tell us about trees in your area, or to get involved with harvesting.

Under-10s aim to repeat success of last season in brand new kit Keynsham’s Fry Club Juniors Football Club U10s squad will be kicking off the 2015/16 season in a new kit sponsored by Freeman Homes. The new kit was unveiled at the club’s annual presentation day on Saturday, June 27, where the team’s first game was a friendly match against their mums. Ryan Auchterlonie, the under-12s manager, said: “Kit sponsorship is very important for grass roots football. We don’t really want to ask the parents to pay for kit as that would be difficult to manage and an expense that might put off some families that want their children to get involved. So it is very important that local businesses come forward. “Freeman Homes has generously stepped up to the plate and the club is very grateful and excited to unveil the new kit. “The under-10s team has done really well in recent years, winning their league in the 2012/13 season. The lads will feel so much more positive in their new kits and we are confident it will spur them on to repeating that success in the coming season.” Freeman Homes is part of the MF Freeman Group, which has secured planning permission for

Fry Club Juniors FC U10s celebrate their new kit the mixed-use development of the former Cadbury factory site. Luke Freeman, joint chief executive of MF Freeman, said: “Fry Club Juniors FC plays on the grounds of the Somerdale site, which also features the former Cadbury factory, so when we heard they were looking for kit sponsorship we were only too happy to help out.

“The football club is very important to the local community and offers youngsters a fantastic opportunity to get into the sport. We have been particularly impressed by the work the club has done to build successful girls’ teams. “It will be great to see the under-10s team take the field in their new kits next season and we

will be watching their progress with enthusiasm. “The sponsorship is also another way for Freeman Homes to give something back to the wider Keynsham community.” For more information on Fry Club Juniors FC, visit the website www.pitchero.com/clubs/ fryclubcolts.

Beginners get the ball rolling at croquet club sessions A total of 18 people attended a recent croquet beginners’ course held at Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club, writes our correspondent. Over the five afternoon sessions beginners were introduced to the game of croquet. On the first day they were a bit hesitant about hitting the ball – but by the end they were clearing the opposition and scoring hoops as if it was second nature. “They will certainly give our better players a shock,” noted one of the coaches. Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club has five accredited coaches and a number of experienced assistants – so beginners could try out their new skills

in smaller groups with lots of support. Croquet is a game where, using a long handled mallet, you hit a ball through a series of hoops. Strength is not important – it’s

skill and tactics that win the day. Men and women play on equal terms in singles or doubles. The club, which now has over 60 members, provides the neces-

sary equipment and arranges four club afternoons a week (Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday), where members can meet friends and mix with other players. If you were not able to make the last beginners’ course, no problem. The club coaches are offering an Introduction to Croquet on any club day, or other days/times by arrangement. “We look forward to introducing you to this popular game – no equipment is needed, just wear flat-soled shoes,” said chair Mo Boys. Call 01225 708540 or contact Ros Key Pugh on 01225 427525 to arrange your personal croquet experience.

Club celebrates hotshots as teams achieve a bowling rarity – twice Keynsham Bowling Club is a hive of activity as we reach midpoint in the bowling season, writes our correspondent. League fixtures as well as friendly games are coming thick and fast for both the ladies and gents, internal competitions are in full flow and the social life of the club continues unabated, with 70 members and friends spending a Saturday evening enjoying a barbecue while listening to the music of the Pipley Bottom Boys. The ladies compete in the North Somerset League on Tuesdays, as do three men’s teams on Saturdays. In addition two men’s teams play in the Bristol and District League on a Thursday and also compete in the Bristol Friday Triples League. The first of the internal trophies was won when mixed teams contested the Ray Percival Cup. Our picture shows the winning side Dick Ollis, Pam Rose and Steve Chivers having received the

ACCOUNTANT

Dick Ollis, Pam Rose and Steve Chivers win the first of Keynsham Bowling Club’s internal contests, presented by competitions secretary Martin Moore, left trophy from Martin Moore (left), the club’s competitions secretary. During a competitive game of bowls a side fields four players, each of whom bowl two woods. To get all of your eight woods closer to the jack than any of your opposition’s woods is a rarity – it is a likened to a hole in one at

golf or a 147 in snooker. If you do achieve this it is referred to as a Hot Shot and clubs can go for a number of seasons without this happening. Recently Keynsham played a Sunday friendly at Wotton-under-Edge and the rink of Cliff Springer, Maureen Cavill, Derek Packer and Margaret

AGRICULTURAL

Church achieved this. Amazingly the ladies playing against Long Ashton in the North Somerset League, with the rink of Jan Isles, Betty Perrin, Pam Rose and Lyn Pells achieved another Hot Shot four weeks later. Two in half a season is some record. Will there be any more?
